Transcript
- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Taba K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas and we're back.
- 0:24We're back with AK Drama. For this episode, I am joined by
- 0:27Liliana from TN Soju Asian Drama podcast.
- 0:31How are you, Liliana? I'm doing well, thank you.
- 0:34I'm very excited for this drama because this has been on my list
- 0:38for a long time, so I'm really, really excited for us to talk
- 0:41about it. Yes, we're missing Caitlin, our
- 0:46third drama trio, but we'll be back together soon.
- 0:50It feels a little weird to be here without her, but we we miss
- 0:53her and we're going to soldier on without her.
- 0:55On this review of It's OK, That's Love.
- 1:00And like Lillian said, we are really excited, like super
- 1:03excited to cover this one. I have been wanting to talk
- 1:08about It's OK That's Love on the podcast for like ever.
- 1:11Like I it's been like a season or two that I've really wanted
- 1:14to cover it. I was going to do it last
- 1:16season. It kind of fell through and I
- 1:19asked you if you wanted to do it to cover it.
- 1:22I know that you haven't really watched some older K dramas.
- 1:26This one I haven't is celebrating A10 year
- 1:29anniversary. It is 10 years old.
- 1:33And I was like, Lily on our you game.
- 1:35And you were like, yeah, like, it's been on my watch.
- 1:37List for a really long time, so. So I was like, Oh my God,
- 1:42perfect. So we watched it and we are
- 1:45going to deep dive on It's OK that's love on this episode.
- 1:50Liliana, what is what do you like you watching this week?
- 1:52Like what's in your besides it's OK that's love.
- 1:54Like what did you watch this week?
- 1:56So I've been catching up on love next door, the Jung he and Jung
- 2:02swimming drama. I'm really enjoying it.
- 2:06Like I I'm a little bit behind just because TN soldier is on a
- 2:11break and I think, I think I I took a break even from watching
- 2:16anything. So like last week I've not
- 2:18watched a lot, but I'm going to catch up with it this weekend.
- 2:23I'm going to have like all the episodes and I'm going to be
- 2:25caught up with it, but I'm really enjoying Love Next Door.
- 2:28What about for Chinese dramas? I think I have to break.
- 2:31Oh, I'm watching the Are You the 1A Chinese drama and that is
- 2:37basically about an assassin that falls in love, not falls in
- 2:42love. She basically gets injured and
- 2:47forgets all of her, like her memories.
- 2:50And then when she wakes up. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:52I'm still watching that one. But I'm going to wrap it up this
- 2:55weekend because that's finished now and it's been done for about
- 2:59a week. So I'm going to finish up that
- 3:01one this weekend as well. I'm watching the story of
- 3:05Minglon, which is just like. That'll take you.
- 3:09That'll take me a minute. I'm re watching ashes of love
- 3:13which my God I'm already like for reasons for reasons but my
- 3:20goodness I as of now I've watched like 8 episodes already
- 3:26and I'm just just binging through these and I'm just like.
- 3:29God, it's so easy. Like when you hit those, those
- 3:32are the best dramas. When you're, you're just like, I
- 3:36can't get myself to stop. Those are the best dramas.
- 3:41Yeah, yeah, I was. I'm not going to lie.
- 3:43I was petrified to go back to Ashes of Love.
- 3:47I mean, it was my first Asian drama ever.
- 3:50It is really, really special. And I was like, I am petrified
- 3:54if I go back in and this is not as good as I remember.
- 3:58But so far I'm just like, I'm loving it.
- 4:02And I'm like seeing it with such different eyes this time around.
- 4:07And it's been a really fun experience so far.
- 4:09And then I'm just watching a Japanese drama, which is called
- 4:13Where the Sea Begins. And my God, this drama has my
- 4:18whole heart. I'm like, I love it so much to
- 4:23the point where I think it may make it into like my best dramas
- 4:27of 2024 just because I adore it that much.
- 4:32It's about it's, I don't think there's not a lot of people
- 4:36talking about it, which is also interesting.
- 4:38I hear nobody talking about it. It's a beautiful story of people
- 4:42like connecting and whatnot. It's like it's brilliant.
- 4:46So that's that's what I'm watching right now.
- 4:49So yeah, I think that one's probably one of my favorites
- 4:51that I'm watching. All right.
- 4:53Well, thank you so much for sharing what you're currently
- 4:56watching. I am basically not watching
- 4:59anything. I I basically was binging this
- 5:03show that we, well, we watching it and binging it this week in
- 5:08preparation for this podcast. I binge it in the span of three
- 5:11days. So yeah, my pace was 4 1/2
- 5:18episodes a day. A day.
- 5:21A day, 4 1/2 episodes I had to get through every day and I was
- 5:26watching it at 1.25 speed, which isn't really that much of A like
- 5:31speed up. No, no, no, no.
- 5:33Yeah. No, it's not.
- 5:34It's. Not just a little, it's just a
- 5:36little touch of a of a. Especially with like old Korean
- 5:39dramas, and I find this with both old Korean dramas, at old
- 5:43Chinese dramas, they speak really slowly and there's like
- 5:47really long pauses between people talking, at least like
- 5:51this is very common in Chinese dramas, I think older Chinese
- 5:55dramas. So if you speed it up a little
- 5:57bit, it just feels like it. It makes no difference.
- 6:01It just feels better. Natural rhythm.
- 6:04Exactly. But I did it out of necessity
- 6:07because I was like, let me cut like a couple of minutes off of
- 6:10these episodes, yeah. Yeah, yeah, we just.
- 6:12Need to get through it faster. Anyway, thank you so much,
- 6:16Liliana for being here. And we are going to deep dive on
- 6:18this. But before we do, if this is

- 7:08Thank you guys. Love you guys.
- 7:10All right, it's OK, that's love. I am going to start with the My
- 7:16drama synopsis work through the director, writer, cast and we'll
- 7:21get into the non spoiler section.
- 7:23Didn't give us our general thoughts.
- 7:25Then we'll get into our soilery thoughts.
- 7:27Maybe some surprises along the way because I have a couple of
- 7:32notes that I wanted to bring. U OK?
- 7:34My drama was synopsis. Despite being a bit of a prickly
- 7:38pear, Deng Jayol has become famous for authoring mystery
- 7:41novels and for hosting a popular radio show.
- 7:44While sitting on a talk show panel with psychiatrist Jesus,
- 7:47it became clear to all that the two just rubbed each other the
- 7:51wrong way. The unthinkable happens when
- 7:55Tayol's girlfriend plagiarizes his work, forcing him to lie low
- 7:59until the media storm blows over.
- 8:01Only then he can prove his innocence.
- 8:03Jayol moves into a house he owns but rents out.
- 8:07One of the current tenants. Is none other than Jesus,
- 8:09unwittingly making them housemates.
- 8:12So we get 2 tropes here. Enemies to lovers.
- 8:15We got cohabitation. Yeah.
- 8:18Add to the mix to Dong Min Jesus, senior colleague and
- 8:22fellow psychiatrist, and Park Sue Kwang, a young man with
- 8:25Tourette's syndrome. As personalities clash, Tail and
- 8:29Hesu help the other heal from deeply rooted emotional scars.
- 8:34All right, so this show aired from July to September 2014.
- 8:39As I said, we are celebrating its 10th anniversary.
- 8:41Happy birthday to It's OK, that's love.
- 8:44It is September when we are recording this and it is
- 8:46September when this will be aired as well.
- 8:50So 16 episodes long, the standard 16 from back then.
- 8:55Kim Kyutai is the director. I just actually covered another
- 8:59Kim Kyutai drama, Our Blues from 2022.
- 9:04This director, I really, really like this director.
- 9:08He's got some wins under his belt.
- 9:11Like I said in the R Blues episode, he's done live from
- 9:152018, Moon Lover, Scarlet Heart Rio, which is another episode.
- 9:18You can scroll back in your podcast feed and listen to that
- 9:20one. That was a swerve Secret love
- 9:23That winter the wind blows. Also with Joy and sung and
- 9:27Songhekio. This director won best director
- 9:29at the 49th Beck Song Awards with that drama That Winter the
- 9:32wind blows. Padam Padam Iris worlds within a
- 9:36love to kill. He's been in the game for a very
- 9:39long time, basically 20 years. This drama is written by Nohi
- 9:43Kyung, the writer from Our Blues Again.
- 9:46So this this is a a writing and directing partnership.
- 9:50They've done a few dramas together, including, you know,
- 9:54Our Blues and It's OK That's love.
- 9:56They've done live together, Padam padam worlds within that
- 10:00winter the wind blows. They tend to work well together.
- 10:04As you can see this screenwriter.
- 10:06No Hi Kyung. She won best screenplay for Dear
- 10:11My Friends at the 53rd Beck Song Awards.
- 10:14So they are both, you know, highly regarded showrunners, you
- 10:18know, So the cast. Cho and Sung plays Zhang Jiyol.
- 10:23He's the male lead. He's obviously been in a lot of
- 10:28things that people recognize. He's a household name.
- 10:32He might not have as many things like the number, the quantity of
- 10:37things is not that many, 11 movies, 11 TV shows, but they
- 10:42are, they're in the zeitgeist. How?
- 10:46I don't know how else to put it like they.
- 10:48Yes. Really recognizable movies and
- 10:52TV shows that are formative for people in Korea, formative for
- 10:58people in the international audience of K dramas as well.
- 11:02I think he's a star. Like to me, he's like a major
- 11:06star at I love him and I think you recently saw him Liliana in
- 11:11moving because you. Were.
- 11:13Watching Moving Finally, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:16So it's kind of funny story, but I was actually just coming up to
- 11:22finishing moving while I was watching this as well.
- 11:25And it was a lot of fun to see the roles because it's night and
- 11:32day. They are two very different
- 11:34roles. And I was like, this actor has
- 11:38demonstrated that he has range and he's really good at doing
- 11:42different things. So I, I'm kind of glad that
- 11:45that's how it worked out actually, because I hadn't seen
- 11:48him and anything else before. I don't think so it worked out
- 11:52really well that I just happened to be watching two dramas where
- 11:55he, you know, was in both of them.
- 11:58And I, you know, I kind of got to see what he was all about in
- 12:02that sense. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:05The significance of him cannot be understated.
- 12:08I'll also, I have to say this, I have still been scarred by
- 12:13something happened in Bali, which from 22,000 and four I, I
- 12:17say this every time it's, it's hard to imagine unless you were
- 12:25there or it's not that I was there in 2004 when this
- 12:28happened. But yeah, I came into the show
- 12:32blind, not knowing the vibe, the, the, the way it was going
- 12:37to shake out or anything. And it's it's a it was a totally
- 12:41different experience to how people watch K dramas now, which
- 12:46is this group watch element this, you know, you theorize
- 12:51with people, you talk about it. If you don't catch an episode,
- 12:54you get spoiled online. And that was not how I watched
- 12:59something happened in Bali. I watched it based off of a
- 13:03friend recommendation. Obviously, Miguel, if people
- 13:06have heard previous episodes where I've talked about this,
- 13:08Miguel, I was like, you got to watch this show.
- 13:11It's so good. You're going to your life is
- 13:13going to be changed. All this stuff recommended.
- 13:15Something happened in Bali from O 4 and I was like, Oh my God,
- 13:19really? OK, Bet I watch it.
- 13:21I was flabbergasted. I was like shocked.
- 13:26It was like going, it was like, I don't know how else, but it
- 13:29was like walking in to maybe go see Disney on Ice.
- 13:33You think you're going to see Disney on Ice and it's like a
- 13:35cabaret show. Like you're like, well, I
- 13:38thought like, you know, it was that feeling.
- 13:41Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're just shocked I always
- 13:48have to mention it. Anyway, there is an episode on
- 13:51moving if you want to scroll back in your podcast.
- 13:53If you didn't listen to it. I think it's one of the best
- 13:56shows of 2023. OK his Co star and it's OK
- 14:00that's love Kong Hyojin. I fucking love Kong Hyojin.
- 14:05I think she is one of the best actresses in K drama land and
- 14:11people that started watching K dramas like during the pandemic
- 14:16don't know. Who she is, they don't know who
- 14:18she is. They don't know her.
- 14:19And I'm like, put some respect on her name.
- 14:21That's how I feel, truly. She plays, you know, our female
- 14:26lead in this show, Jesus. And she's been in about 23
- 14:30movies. She's been in shows like When
- 14:34the Camellia Blooms from 2019, The Masters Son from 2313 with
- 14:38Soji, sub pasta biscuit teacher and Star candy.
- 14:41And I have to, I have to say, I am so excited for whenever this
- 14:46show drops. When the Stars Gossip is the
- 14:49current title of it, it's with Lee Min Ho or Immano.
- 14:54She plays an astronaut and he plays a gynecologist and the
- 14:59whole. Thing is talking about this.
- 15:01Oh my, it's like a sci-fi romance or something.
- 15:04I'm like fucking there like I am so there.
- 15:08It's insane so. You know, I'm not even a Imman
- 15:13Ho fan, but I was like this. I I just need to check this out
- 15:17because it just sounds, you know, it sounds so different.
- 15:24It sounds wild. I'm like, I just need to and
- 15:27I'll, I'll gladly like even if I'm not his biggest fan, I'll
- 15:31gladly go in for this actress because she tends to deliver.
- 15:35So I I'll more than happily go in like to watch.
- 15:39What she? Puts right and so.
- 15:42You like? I did, I did.
- 15:44And funnily enough, I had watched The Master's Son before
- 15:48and I was like, it's OK. But I don't think her role does
- 15:54a lot of justice to her in like the Master Son.
- 15:58She's very like almost drab in that, no, I don't know if drab's
- 16:02the right word, but she's very, I don't know, she's sleep.
- 16:05Deprived. Yeah, exactly.
- 16:08I mean, it's a different character.
- 16:11Yeah, see, But I understand what you're saying.
- 16:14She's muted. So in this one, in this one I
- 16:20got she's so. Fun.
- 16:21Like I remember her being very fun in that show.
- 16:25Anyway, talk to me about her in this show.
- 16:27So I liked her way more in this one because it's like you get to
- 16:32see a different side to her. Not only is she she's quite
- 16:36smart in this. She plays, I mean she plays a
- 16:39psychologist. So you know, she obviously is
- 16:43going to be a smart character in terms of that.
- 16:45At least she can be a little bit.
- 16:49She's sassy and she's fun and she's I don't know, I liked her
- 16:54character in this one. Probably I probably liked her
- 16:57weigh more in this than I did in the master son.
- 17:00But like the master son, I liked it, but it wasn't like a show
- 17:04that I loved, if that makes sense, Whereas this one, I
- 17:09really, really liked this one. So I was like this one if
- 17:13people, I was kind of thinking people always hype up this show
- 17:18like it's OK, that's love. And I'm like, do you know what
- 17:22hype it? I I think it deserves the hype
- 17:24that it gets. So, you know, whereas with the
- 17:28master son, whereas with the master son, I'm like, I don't
- 17:33quite get the hype, if that makes sense.
- 17:36So I think that's why I liked her weigh more in this role.
- 17:40Oh nice. Oh my God I love that.
- 17:43OK, so we do have some supporting cast members that are
- 17:48recognizable people names of their own.
- 17:51Sung Dong Yiel plays Dong Min. I called him Sung Be Dock some
- 17:55of the doc in my notes. He said in like 40 movies
- 17:59including Miss granny, midnight runners, great battle, the
- 18:02pirates, last royal treasure, 48 TV shows.
- 18:07What hasn't he been in the entire reply series including
- 18:12Moon Lovers, Scarlet Heart, Rio, Legend of the Blue Sea, Wadong
- 18:16Prison Playbook, Miss Hammer, Robbie, Liv, GD, San Sisyphus,
- 18:21most recently If you wish upon me in my sweet mobster.
- 18:27I mean he's been in the game for like 20 years.
- 18:29He was in Lovers in Paris in 04. Iconic.
- 18:32So you've definitely seen this guy.
- 18:35He's been everywhere. He's been everywhere.
- 18:37Ekwang SU plays SU Kwang, the guy with Tourette's syndrome.
- 18:42I just call him running man. Running man, Yeah, he just has
- 18:45been. In Running, he was in Running
- 18:46Man for 11 years. So he's Running Man in my notes.
- 18:52He's been in 14 movies, including the same movie as
- 18:56before, Pirates, The Last Royal Treasure.
- 18:58I feel like everybody was in that one.
- 19:01I feel like it employed half of Korea anyway, 22 TV shows,
- 19:05including most recently The Killer's shopping lists, and he
- 19:08was in live as well. Sound of Your Heart, Entourage,
- 19:12Innocent Man from 2012, which is a really good show.
- 19:15City Hunter from 2011. Yes, and Dong Yi.
- 19:18Films 2010 he's been. Yeah, he has done a lot of cameo
- 19:24work as well. I just didn't include that in
- 19:27his filmography that I've wanted to mention because if you see
- 19:32him pop up as like a big character in an episode or two,
- 19:35that's also why his filmography is so long.
- 19:37When you when you see him. I think we have two more people.
- 19:40No, three more people. Jin Yong.
- 19:41Jin Kyong plays Yongjin. She is the female psychiatrist
- 19:46in the friends group. She used to be married to Sonbe.
- 19:50Doc for My Notes, 32 movies, 34 TV shows.
- 19:56Most recently the story of Park's marriage contract, My
- 19:59Lovely Liar, all the doctor romantics, a ton of things.
- 20:03She's been in so many things. E Song Kyung plays Sonia.
- 20:07This was her first role ever. This is the E Song Kyung from
- 20:12Weightlifting Fairy. Kimbok Chu.
- 20:14This is Kimbok Chu herself. It is.
- 20:17In her very first acting role ever.
- 20:19You know she's been in She's in the Trap While You Were Sleeping
- 20:22as a cameo. What did you this?
- 20:24This was her first acting role ever.
- 20:25What did you think about Issan Kyung?
- 20:28This character reminded me a little bit of her character from
- 20:33Weightlifting Book 2. Really.
- 20:36Really. But like more on the female
- 20:41side, if that makes sense, because like what Drew is very
- 20:44because of the sport she plays and whatnot, she tends to be not
- 20:49as feminine, if that makes sense.
- 20:52And I think in this one, but I liked her.
- 20:54I think like for a first role she did fairly good.
- 20:58For a first role she didn't have a lot to do, but I think her
- 21:02character overall wasn't that bad for a first role.
- 21:05So I think, I think she did OK. Yeah, I think she did pretty
- 21:09good. I don't think I would ever
- 21:10necessarily guess that it's her first role or I would.
- 21:16I guess that she would go on to be such a big star also, like
- 21:21from the same show. I thought that her character in
- 21:26It's OK That's Love was giving a lot of what she gave, and she's
- 21:29in the trap, which was like this neurotic, yeah, energy and
- 21:34selfish, bratty person. Yeah, that's what she was giving
- 21:40in this show. But anyway, yeah, do Kyung Soo.
- 21:44Also in this show, AKA Dio from EXO, he plays Kong Wu.
- 21:54This is the most awesome. He's a baby.
- 21:57He's just a little baby. Yeah.
- 21:59This is his first role ever. Also, he's since been in nine
- 22:05movies. He's been in four TV shows of
- 22:07relatively small filmography for, I think, such an excellent
- 22:13Idol actor. He's so good.
- 22:15He needs to be. I feel like he could do, he
- 22:19could become a really good like household name in the acting
- 22:24industry because he has the chops to do it.
- 22:27Like he has the talent to do it, He really does.
- 22:32And so I wish, I wish he would lean into the acting career a
- 22:38bit more. And I can't believe this was his
- 22:41first role and he's only got 4 TV shows under his belt.
- 22:44That's wild. To me, I mean, not counting the
- 22:47first that I think it was to the beautiful you in which Exo
- 22:50appears in it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:53Yeah. And that I didn't count that.
- 22:55I'm like that's. Not no, no.
- 22:59Anyway. Well, I was just going to say
- 23:01when he came on screen, I was like, Oh my God, he looks like a
- 23:05baby because I know him from like 100 days my Prince and like
- 23:10old like from what he looks like now, like I really, I don't
- 23:14think I've watched him in anything else but 100 days my
- 23:17Prince. And I was like, he came on.
- 23:20He was like, oh, he looks like a dad.
- 23:24So precious. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:28So that's our cast, pretty big, but it's an ensemble cast.
- 23:33This is a bit of a found family show as well, but I think I know
- 23:41the answer to this. But what do you how did you feel
- 23:43about this show? How did you think it went?
- 23:47I really, really, really liked it and I think it reminded me of
- 23:52why I like K dramas. I like and I always say, I think
- 23:56K dramas can do this type of show really well.
- 24:00Like this is the type of K drama that I fall in love with time
- 24:05and time again. And unfortunately, I don't think
- 24:08we've seen much of it lately, But I this, like I said, this
- 24:15had been on my to watch list for ages.
- 24:19Everybody takes it as like a really, really good drama.
- 24:23And I've been burned so many times with people saying, you
- 24:27know, this, this is a great classic drama, you know?
- 24:31And I'm like, OK, yeah, OK. But I went in and I was like,
- 24:34I'm going to keep a very open mind.
- 24:36I was worried about a couple of things.
- 24:39I was worried that because it's an older drama and because of
- 24:43what it centers around, it centers a lot around mental
- 24:46health. And I was like, in the dear
- 24:50Lord, year of 2024, they still get mental health problems
- 24:56really wrong in Korean dramas. And I'm like, how is a 10 year
- 25:00old show gonna do OK with like this type of topic?
- 25:06So I was worried about it. And I don't think actually, for
- 25:12a show that is 10 years old, I actually think they did an OK
- 25:15job with it. I think they handled, you know,
- 25:18a lot of those aspects of the show well.
- 25:21I think it still stands the test of time.
- 25:25Like there's nothing there that I would be like, Oh my God, this
- 25:29feels so old and so outdated. It's a 2014 show, but it still
- 25:34translates well in terms of it, you know, being watched in 2024,
- 25:39ten years later. So that is, I think a real
- 25:43advantage and a real, it really shows what it's about.
- 25:47The fact that 10 years later it can still be watched and enjoyed
- 25:51so much. So overall, I really liked it.
- 25:55I think there's like literally a couple of things that I wasn't
- 25:59such a fan of, but we can get into that in the the spoiler
- 26:04section. But I liked the acting.
- 26:06I think the acting was so well done here.
- 26:09Yeah, I was mind blown. I the last three episodes I was
- 26:15crying non-stop. I was like bowling for the last
- 26:19three episodes, I'm like, Oh my God, this is so good.
- 26:23The emotion that the these actors deliver is just so well
- 26:28done. Overall.
- 26:30I just really, really liked it, I think.
- 26:32I am so glad to hear you say that you enjoyed the show, that
- 26:36it didn't feel dated for you, that because I think that's a
- 26:40concern right for anybody. This is a huge reason why I want
- 26:44to cover older dramas is because they don't get the love and
- 26:49appreciation that they deserve. And people, newer K drama fans,
- 26:54younger K drama fans, are averse to dipping back into this vast
- 26:59well, this library of K dramas and instead just choose to watch
- 27:05currently airing dramas. And that's fine, except I feel
- 27:09like you're just missing all of this great content.
- 27:13You're missing all of these great writing.
- 27:14You're missing references. Like there's dramas and people
- 27:18that you're watching now that you don't get the significance
- 27:21of. You don't know their
- 27:21filmography. And it's almost to me, like
- 27:26watching a movie with like, I don't know, Ben Affleck now.
- 27:32And you're like, this movie sucks.
- 27:34Why is Ben Affleck a thing? Yeah.
- 27:37OK, slow down. You haven't watched Ben Affleck.
- 27:42You don't understand. Like Ben Affleck, you have to go
- 27:44back and watch Goodwill Hunting and like all these, you have to
- 27:49get the thing before you can really understand the yeah, this
- 27:56isn't top tier Ben Affleck, this is sucky Ben Affleck.
- 28:00But. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:01The whole thing of of Ben Affleck and why he's important
- 28:04and why he's famous is because of all this other stuff, this
- 28:08foundational things. That's what made him famous, why
- 28:11he's worth watching sometimes. And I think I think as well with
- 28:16like the older K dramas, realistically speaking, they are
- 28:20the blueprints for what you watch now.
- 28:23So it's like you can still see the same track, like you can
- 28:28still see traces of those old K dramas on, you know, the new K
- 28:34dramas that you watch now. Say I, I think it's good to go
- 28:39back and I will hold my hands because I was very much a person
- 28:43that was a first. I was like, I did not want to go
- 28:48and watch older dramas. I was like, I don't want to
- 28:50touch them. I just don't feel like I need
- 28:53to. But to be fair, I, I think I'd
- 28:55started, I think the oldest ones I'd kind of watched were like
- 28:5820-15, maybe 2014. Well, now 2014, but I think I've
- 29:03watched all the stuff now and the beginnings.
- 29:07Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:08But in in the beginning, because there was none of this, you
- 29:12know, blown up when I started watching, there was none of
- 29:15these blown up dramas that there is now that are on air and
- 29:19that's so easily accessible. I went back and I watched a
- 29:22whole load of dramas from like especially like 20/16/2016 was a
- 29:28great Korean drama. Yeah.
- 29:30And like, so I think going back and watching some of those, it
- 29:34is also really, really good, especially when K dramas aren't
- 29:38having the best of times lately, at least for me.
- 29:41At least for me. Yeah, when there's a dry spell,
- 29:45a drought, it's always nice to be like, oh, right, I have a 20
- 29:51years of K dramas that I haven't really.
- 29:54Yeah. Looked at.
- 29:56Anyway, I'm gonna get off my soapbox now.
- 29:58So the way that I felt about this drama, it was so great.
- 30:02Like I love this drama. Re watching it, I was a little
- 30:07bit afraid that I was going to like it as much and it was going
- 30:10to lose its Sheen a little bit. But no, no, no, no, no.
- 30:14It was really, really good. And I just think these
- 30:19characters are so well written. They're so strong.
- 30:24They're so, they're so flawed, right?
- 30:28They're making weird, funky decisions.
- 30:31And they're working through these little, you know, they're
- 30:35having conversations with each other and they're dissecting it
- 30:39in real time. And you're like, oh, that's what
- 30:44I do. Like, you know, that's how.
- 30:45You. Go about your life.
- 30:48They feel human, they feel real to you.
- 30:52I. Think they have their little
- 30:54idiosyncrasies right? They tease each other I I don't
- 30:58have words exactly for how real they felt and organic their
- 31:04relationships felt. I think that probably the
- 31:07difficulty in the show comes in the fact that it's been 10 years
- 31:12and we as an audience have a better understanding of mental
- 31:17health and mental illness than we did 10 years ago.
- 31:20And of the protocols, the medical protocols around such
- 31:25things, right? There's certain hospital
- 31:29protocols that I think we're not followed.
- 31:32Oh yeah. Or just ignored in the show.
- 31:36And, you know, there's a lot of like conflict of interest things
- 31:40in the show that wouldn't fly just like don't lie.
- 31:44And I understand that it's AK drama and they can take creative
- 31:48liberties with certain things. But I think on the whole, it
- 31:51nailed like the spirit of mental health and mental illness.
- 31:55And in portraying these things with a lot of intent, they had
- 32:01definitions for things popping up on the screen for the
- 32:04audience and they were taking their time to explain certain
- 32:08things. And I think we forget that ten
- 32:13years ago nobody was talking about mental health and mental
- 32:15illness. No, no, they barely talk about
- 32:18it now in Asia, so. Nobody was talking about it.
- 32:22No, back then this was groundbreaking.
- 32:26This was a whole new thing. To do back then was to have
- 32:32these characters be psychiatrists, right, doctors of
- 32:36the mind, and then to have the plot unfold the way it does, to
- 32:41have this sort of twist that happens.
- 32:45I don't know about you, but like, I was the first time I
- 32:48watched it, that twist. I got got.
- 32:50I got got. I did not see it coming.
- 32:53I didn't not see it coming. That was what I was gonna ask
- 32:55you. Like, I don't wanna spoil it,
- 32:57but we're just gonna talk about the twist generally right now.
- 32:59But like when the twist happened the first time I watched it, I
- 33:03was completely taken aback. I shocked this.
- 33:08I have a friend of mine who lives with me.
- 33:12I've known her for a really long time.
- 33:14We went to college together and whatnot.
- 33:17She loves this drama and she watched it all like she watched
- 33:21it when it was airing I think or just after it was airing.
- 33:24So she watched it really long time ago.
- 33:26She loves that. And I had gone for coffee with
- 33:30her and I said, I'm finally watching this.
- 33:32And she got so excited that I was like, watching it and what
- 33:36not. And then she goes, you'll have
- 33:37to keep me updated. Like just message me how you're
- 33:41feeling about it. And when I got to that twist, I
- 33:45messaged her and I was like, get out of here.
- 33:47Like this is even happening every time.
- 33:51Like, how did I not see that coming?
- 33:55And The thing is, it's so well written.
- 33:57It is. The clues are all they're there.
- 34:01On 2nd watch I was like I'm a fucking idiot like you were the
- 34:05whole time. So I think that just shows how
- 34:10good it's written and how well it's written.
- 34:13The fact that they layer these little clues for you, You don't
- 34:19see it you. Literally don't see it like I
- 34:23again and I was way more familiar than the native Korean
- 34:27audience on mental health and mental and the and the specific
- 34:31ones that come into play with A twist back then back when I
- 34:35watched it 10 years ago. But Even so, I did not freaking
- 34:40see it coming. I got hit by a freight train and
- 34:44honestly it made the show better.
- 34:47It did it did it. Truly, the show was great and
- 34:51then it like took it to another stratosphere.
- 34:55It was almost like it could happen to anybody.
- 34:57Like it was it was a very if they kept talking about it
- 35:01throughout the show that like all of us can have issues like
- 35:07mental health issues and nobody is immune.
- 35:11They were, I mean, early on in the show they were talking about
- 35:14if you're a surgeon, does that mean you don't get cancer?
- 35:17Things like that were very powerful statements to make.
- 35:21You know, if you're a doctor, do you not get a cold suddenly
- 35:23because you're treating people that have have colds And that is
- 35:28not the case at all. And the same goes for mental
- 35:31health and mental illness, like anyone can suffer from these
- 35:36things and it's OK to get treatment, to seek.
- 35:41Help. Do you know what I, I think I
- 35:44first of all, I think I gave this grace because it is 10
- 35:48years old. But even saying that it was, you
- 35:53know, the fact that they had again, people playing
- 35:56psychiatrists, but not just that, but they had people
- 35:59seeking the help of these psychiatrists was a really big
- 36:03step. I I feel like I want to rewatch
- 36:06it because I feel like it would be the perfect follow up show to
- 36:10what after watching this one. It would be daily dose of
- 36:13sunshine. I knew you were going to bring
- 36:15this. Up very similar, but it's that
- 36:18it is, though. It's so similar.
- 36:20You take away the romance because there's not really a lot
- 36:22of romance in Daily Dose of Sunshine.
- 36:24There is some, but it's so like comparable to like these two
- 36:30shows are so comparable in terms of like what they deal with, but
- 36:34it's like Daily Dose of Sunshine is a 20/24/23 updated version of
- 36:40it, if that makes sense. Right, right.
- 36:42Even even saying that the you know, it's OK that's love still
- 36:48stands on its own and still like 10 years later it.
- 36:52Feels current. It feels relevant.
- 36:54Exactly, exactly, exactly so and I would say.
- 36:57You wouldn't have shows like. Daily dose of sunshine.
- 37:00Daily Dose of Sunshine. Yeah.
- 37:01If it wasn't for shows like It's OK, That's Love.
- 37:05Exactly. Breaking ground.
- 37:07And I saw this article from the Korea Herald, from the director.
- 37:11It was a little interview with the director talking about why
- 37:14it's this is such a necessary drama regarding its message to
- 37:18society. And I'll read a little bit of
- 37:20it. It was at the premiere in Seoul,
- 37:23he admitted that some of the socially awakening ideas
- 37:26embedded in It's Okay that's love could appear heavy quote UN
- 37:30quote and unfamiliar UN quote UN quote to the audience, but
- 37:35dramas with social messages should not be shunned, he
- 37:38alleges. This is his quote.
- 37:40I think it the show is a necessary drama.
- 37:43I am sorry that some dramas with social messages have been
- 37:46shunned. Both the writer and I tried to
- 37:48pay much attention to have the message delivered more
- 37:51effectively. Fun and comfortable the drama
- 37:54contained. This is not his quote.
- 37:56The drama contains both ROM com plots and character development,
- 37:59and addresses the discrimination of minorities such as mentally
- 38:02ill people, criminals and emotionally ailing people.
- 38:05Some scenes include Konko Jin, the psychiatrist, bathing her
- 38:09physically and mentally impaired father or being attacked by
- 38:12psychologically disoriented patients.
- 38:15A confined murderer with mental disorder also appears in the
- 38:18drama. In such context, the director
- 38:21has underscored the fact that the drama breaks away from the
- 38:24traditional genre of a medical ROM com.
- 38:27He called It's OK That's Love, a hybrid that puts more weight on
- 38:31breaking the social prejudices toward the minority groups, he
- 38:35quotes Miss No. The writer has the seriousness
- 38:38and the wait, and I have the lightness and mass friendliness.
- 38:42Together we make a great synergy, he said.
- 38:46The director said he was pressured about the difficulty
- 38:48of bringing the story to the screen without deviating too
- 38:51much from the ROM com frame. Which makes me think that the
- 38:54studio or the the network was like hey I don't want this to.
- 38:59Be like not. Fun like, I don't want this to
- 39:01not be a ROM com because we want people to watch, he says.
- 39:06I personally found it hard to keep the balance between a ROM
- 39:09com and a conventional melodrama.
- 39:11Everyone seen would contain both features.
- 39:15So long as this balance stays unbroken, the drama will be
- 39:18close to a perfection, the director confided.
- 39:20Yeah, so I really agree with what he's saying.
- 39:24You can see that he's trying to break new ground here with the
- 39:29drama and how it portrays mental illness, mental health.
- 39:33Because it's very obvious that the native Korean audience is so
- 39:38unfamiliar with these topics, with why they're important to
- 39:41talk about. And to have big stars like Toen
- 39:46Song and Kong Hyojin being front and center and talking about
- 39:50these things openly as psychiatrists and as like the
- 39:54male lead, going through these struggles very openly and
- 39:58honestly. But also with this like ROM com
- 40:02fun light hearted atmosphere with this found family with
- 40:06these really lively characters that is in so enticing.
- 40:11And it totally works. Yeah, I think they did a great
- 40:15job of managing that line between what obviously the
- 40:22studios and, you know, the networks would accept, and still
- 40:27being able to push beyond anything that had been done up
- 40:32to that point. So I think they did a really,
- 40:35really good job. Both the screenwriter and the
- 40:37director just worked so well together in tandem to bring this
- 40:41story to life. And again, yes, you can still
- 40:45see the tropes that the drama hits, like the cohabitation, the
- 40:50quasi. They say enemies to lovers, but
- 40:53to me it's not really enemies to lovers.
- 40:56It's kind of like mildly dislike of each other to.
- 41:01Yeah, yeah. I don't think he ever
- 41:03necessarily disliked her either. She really disliked him.
- 41:06Yeah, she did. She really did.
- 41:08But you know, you have those beats that Korean dramas tend to
- 41:13hit, but then he go, they both go beyond and they push into
- 41:19almost unchanted territory. And that's like what made the
- 41:24drama so special, I think, to me at least.
- 41:27I'm also going to point out the fact that this is an older
- 41:29couple, right? These protagonists, the female
- 41:33lead and the male lead, are in their 30s.
- 41:36Yep, which is lovely. It's lovely, I love it.
- 41:41They're in their 30s, they're older, they're at a totally
- 41:43different stage in life. They're not in their 20s,
- 41:45they're not teenagers. And I feel like back then it was
- 41:48way more prevalent to have drama centered on younger
- 41:51protagonists. Young people in their 20s are in
- 41:53high school school dramas. And today I just read a, a
- 41:58headline that was saying that Korean dramas, it's like the
- 42:02first time that they really don't have high school dramas
- 42:06people or dramas with young people in them centred on people
- 42:11in their 20s beginning their lives because of the aging
- 42:16Korean populace. As we all know, the birth rate
- 42:19in Korea is extremely low. They are not having children in
- 42:23Korea. And because of that, there is an
- 42:26aging population. And so a lot of the K dramas
- 42:29that are coming out of Korea are about older people, people in
- 42:33their 30s, forties, fifties, right?
- 42:35If you look at the dramas that are currently airing, they are
- 42:41not about, you know, kids in school uniforms.
- 42:44I mean, but also, there's only so much you can push.
- 42:49You're putting all the actors in school uniforms, isn't there?
- 42:54You know, it's it's true, but it's a different world and it's
- 43:01OK. That's Love was doing this 10
- 43:02years ago. Yeah, exactly.
- 43:05So one of the last things that I wanted to discuss was I found
- 43:10out that there is a bit of a fan war situation between It's OK,
- 43:16that's love and it's so. It's OK to not be OK.
- 43:22It's OK to not be OK. I I had no idea that this was
- 43:28the thing. I love both shows.
- 43:30I wanna. Put on the record I.
- 43:32Love both shows I. Remember watching?
- 43:36Hands up, I love both shows. I had no idea that they were
- 43:40being compared. I think it's because they're
- 43:43similarly named and they cover similar topics of mental health
- 43:49and mental illness. They are fucking different
- 43:51shows, OK? They are wildly different shows.
- 43:54They have totally different vibes, different casts,
- 43:57different writers, different, different directors.
- 44:00They are like a good ten years apart.
- 44:03I think what it's It's OK to not Be OK was aired in 20 and 20, I
- 44:08think. I think it's a pandemic show,
- 44:10yeah. Yeah, yeah, I think 2020.
- 44:12Almost a 10 year age difference between them.
- 44:16I think people, I put it, I put a poll up on Instagram to see
- 44:22what people were saying, like, how did you, how do you feel
- 44:26about this? And a lot of people, it was a
- 44:31mixed bag. Some people were like, I love
- 44:33it's OK to not be OK more because of the cinematography
- 44:37and the cast and the story and yadda, yadda, yadda.
- 44:40It's better. Some people thought that it's OK
- 44:43that's love was dated, which I don't know about that
- 44:48subjective, but OK. Yeah, even the vibes are so
- 44:52different, like It's OK to not be OK has almost like this
- 44:57gothic vibe over it. It's such a different.
- 45:01Like I love both shows. And also, The thing is, for me,
- 45:06I watched It's OK to Not Be OK live like as it was airing.
- 45:12So I had a very different experience with that show than I
- 45:16had with it. It's OK That's love.
- 45:17I watched it, you know, in my own little bubble of sorts.
- 45:22But even saying that, like, I still loved both shows.
- 45:26And the fact of the matter is, if you put it out there that
- 45:30you're watching, it's OK, That's love.
- 45:33There will be people for you to talk to about this show because
- 45:37it's a very well loved drama. Like there's people that love it
- 45:42and will still want to talk about it.
- 45:44So I don't, I never understand the point of fan wars.
- 45:48You are allowed to enjoy both things.
- 45:52Like you don't, it doesn't have to be either or.
- 45:54I don't understand this, you know, mentality of something has
- 46:00to be better Like than what you like.
- 46:03It's like it's a useless mentality.
- 46:05It's like again, yes, they have similar they cover similar
- 46:10topics. They both cover mental health,
- 46:13but one is way, way more into the romance than the other, I
- 46:17would say. And they're very different
- 46:19vibes, very different stories at the end of the day.
- 46:22And I. Wait, which one is more into the
- 46:25romance do you think? I think it's OK.
- 46:27That's love. No, I think it's it's OK to not
- 46:29be OK. They lean a very heavily into
- 46:32like the romance story of it. It's centered around those two.
- 46:39It's centered around like their story, whereas I think you get
- 46:43more of a bigger found family and it's okay.
- 46:47That's love, even though in the other one, God, it gets so when
- 46:52you're talking about these two and it's OK to not be OK, you
- 46:55have like a smaller found family because you have the main couple
- 46:59plus the brother. So you have like a smaller found
- 47:02family. But I think in it's OK, that's
- 47:06love. It's just a bigger one.
- 47:07And you have like, you know, the psychiatrists and you do get to
- 47:11go more into the hospital side of it and you get to see a lot
- 47:16more of that. But I, I don't know, I just
- 47:18think they're different shows. And I think why pick when you
- 47:23can enjoy both? I could, yeah.
- 47:25I couldn't understand. Yeah, I was like, why choose
- 47:28between vanilla cake and chocolate cake?
- 47:31Just have both cakes. Yeah, I had people saying, oh,
- 47:38it's OK, that's love. The costumes were dated.
- 47:41It was really zany lighting and sets.
- 47:44I was like, I don't understand. That's not dated.
- 47:48Someone said it's OK, That's love was very easy and simple to
- 47:52understand. Like they were talking about it
- 47:54positively that way. And even though they had watched
- 47:57It's OK to Not Be OK more recently because it's a more
- 48:00recent show, they couldn't fucking remember any details
- 48:03about that show at all. They were just like, yeah, the
- 48:05female lead was rude and like, they was what she was like, not
- 48:11gonna lie. They're right about that.
- 48:13Another person was talking about the tonal shifts and it's OK,
- 48:16that's love being weird. And I was like, I don't, I
- 48:20didn't get a tonal shift at all. Like I I guess maybe they're
- 48:23talking about the twist. Yeah, but that was it was there.
- 48:27We were just dumb to not see it. We're just stupid like.
- 48:30We just did a. It's almost like watching the
- 48:326th Sense and being like Oh my God.
- 48:36Exactly. He's dead all the time.
- 48:40Do you know when it comes to these type of comparisons?
- 48:45I also always think it's so unfair to compare to compare
- 48:50especially to dramas like this. Like it's OK to not be OK.
- 48:55It had Netflix money behind it. I was.
- 48:58Going to say the same cost. Of course the costumes are going
- 49:02to be better. Of course the sets are going to
- 49:03be better. It's almost 10 years apart.
- 49:06Things have developed. The male lead in that is the
- 49:08most expensive male like he gets paid the more.
- 49:11Yeah, of course. It's going to have more budget.
- 49:16It's good. It's such a big budget drama.
- 49:19I mean, they ended up selling the books that she wrote in
- 49:25this. They ended up making merchandise
- 49:27out of it and selling it. They I just feel like it's an
- 49:33unfair comparison because you can't.
- 49:37It's like comparing apples to oranges almost.
- 49:40It's like, you know, there it's an older drama that had maybe
- 49:46half the budget of that one. It's a maybe win, maybe even
- 49:51less. Like you can't go in and say,
- 49:54oh, their costuming sucks. And I was like, their costuming
- 49:57is adequate for the time that it was being recorded and
- 50:01distributed in like, I don't know.
- 50:04I don't know what to say but. Yeah, also the Sunboat Song
- 50:08talking about the OST, we gotta talk about the OSD on It's Okay,
- 50:12That's Love. Jesus.
- 50:14Did you like it or? I'm not gonna lie, I did get a
- 50:19little because they kept using the same song.
- 50:23They they kept using the the same songs and I I think I knew
- 50:29the songs off by heart by the end of it.
- 50:31There is actually. There is something, but I can't
- 50:34talk about it until we're in the spoiler section.
- 50:36OK, All right, all right, so I have a few fun facts that I
- 50:41wanted to talk through. This is kind of funny because
- 50:45there's a couple of episodes where Komi Ojin has like an arm
- 50:49cast. Yeah, Oh my God.
- 50:51Is there something to do with that?
- 50:53Because I was like, this is a very over exaggerated cast.
- 50:57She actually broke this is she actually broke her arm.
- 51:00At 1:00 AM on June 19th, 2014, Konghya Jin was riding in a van
- 51:06that became involved in a three vehicle rear end collision with
- 51:10two trucks. She was on her way back to Seoul
- 51:12after filming in Kungi Province. This resulted in a left arm
- 51:16fracture and knee injury and scratches to her face.
- 51:18After recuperating, she and Co star Chun Sung later left for a
- 51:21shoot in Okinawa, Japan. They actually filmed in Okinawa,
- 51:23Japan For those that episode where their characters go on a
- 51:27romantic trip. Her fractured arm was
- 51:29incorporated into the story. And I was like.
- 51:31Oh. My God, how funny.
- 51:33That makes so much sense. That makes so much sense.
- 51:39It was like, she just fired. It's like one.
- 51:44It's like a sitcom when, like, a female cast member gets pregnant
- 51:48and they, like, just incorporate it into the story.
- 51:52Yeah. I was like, this cast is so big
- 51:56but it's supposedly very minor. Interesting.
- 51:59Yeah, in the drama, yeah, it looked too real, you know what
- 52:03I'm saying? Like they didn't like fudge it.
- 52:04It looked like a real cast. Anyway, so the show ended up
- 52:08with modest ratings, which is about 10 to 12% on average and
- 52:13it ranked 3rd on the year end. Content power index, CPI for
- 52:18short, developed by CJE and M and AGB Nielsen Media Research,
- 52:23which monitors non traditional variables such as number of
- 52:26mobile and Internet streaming viewers and online buzz in
- 52:29social media. And I have to be honest, 10
- 52:32years ago that probably didn't matter as much.
- 52:35Now that matters. That's the only thing that
- 52:38matters, I would say. So it did well by today's
- 52:43standards, you know. Yeah.
- 52:45It also received praise for addressing the discrimination
- 52:48and social stigma attached to people with mental health issues
- 52:51and other minorities. It was nominated for three picks
- 52:54on awards and I will close out the section of the non spoilers
- 52:58section with a portion of a of a review that I saw from my My
- 53:03Drama List MDL. This reviewer posted a very long
- 53:08review. Sometimes I don't like reading
- 53:10the My Drama List reviews, but this one caught my attention
- 53:12because they started off by saying that they have bipolar
- 53:15disorder and it was a very involved several paragraphs of
- 53:21them talking about their disorder and how it feels to be
- 53:25in a manic state and and all of this stuff and how it was very
- 53:30poetically written. I was very well written, but
- 53:33then they go into their basically five star 10 however
- 53:36many points, top points you can give.
- 53:38An MDL? Yeah, it's 10 out of 10 on MDL.
- 53:40So this is from Surprise Lobotomy from October 2014, so
- 53:44very close to when this finished airing.
- 53:47This is a 10 year old review from MDL.
- 53:50They say if there is a single safe harbour in all of this,
- 53:54it's love. When 2 souls dredge through the
- 53:56fire and connect, the bond can become unbreakable.
- 53:59Empathy is the great uniter. Shared pain is like cement.
- 54:03Love will harden through pain. This is what separates this
- 54:06drama from the rest. This is why it's OK.
- 54:08That's Love is a masterpiece. Mental health is not a topic
- 54:11that is addressed very often in Korean dramas, and when it is,
- 54:15it's often come comes across as comical.
- 54:17It's usually presented as one of the two extremes, something too
- 54:20light, often existing as Comic Relief or a silly quirk meant to
- 54:24add flavor without substance, or as something too heavy existing
- 54:28as some ethereal force that twists the mind into something
- 54:31less than human. It's Okay That's Love is able to
- 54:34present something serious and keep a light hearted tone
- 54:37without being insulting. If you're looking at the
- 54:40melodrama tag and expecting something that borders on
- 54:43mahjong, this drama is not that. The feeling of melancholy
- 54:47threads this drama together, but it does not weigh it down.
- 54:51You won't find endless sobbing, misunderstandings, or
- 54:53two-dimensional characters. Instead, this drama showcases
- 54:57the marriage of two souls through unconditional love and
- 55:00growth. Love is strongest when flaws can
- 55:02fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, and the characters in
- 55:05this drama complement each other perfectly.
- 55:08It's important to emphasize that these characters are flawed.
- 55:11Too often drama shy away from characters with real problems
- 55:15and instead settle on external conflict to move the story in
- 55:18its entirety. The characters in these dramas
- 55:21are perfect outside of the experiences they undergo and the
- 55:24forces that act on them, and it makes them two-dimensional.
- 55:27This is not the case in this drama.
- 55:30Most of the conflict is internal, but it's relatable and
- 55:34organic. Every single character is
- 55:36presented in a manner that allows you to love and empathize
- 55:40with them. It's a multi layered story.
- 55:42The supporting cast is also very well developed.
- 55:45In addition to a perfect atmosphere, this drama does
- 55:47something almost unheard of in a Korean drama.
- 55:50It presents a love story that is not about the chase but rather
- 55:53endurance. Adult topics such as sex,
- 55:56intimacy, and trust are at the forefront and allow the drama to
- 56:00paint a picture of actual couplehood instead of
- 56:02traditional guy chase girl or girl chase guy fair.
- 56:06You'll watch the couple grow not only as individuals but as
- 56:09loving creatures. It doesn't stop at love either.
- 56:12The concept of friendship as a refuge is just as strong.
- 56:16The entire cast grows over the course of the show.
- 56:19So I thought they summed it up perfectly.
- 56:22And I love that they had such a read on the show.
- 56:27The same same as my read and I don't have such a close
- 56:31connection or experience with mental illness, you know?
- 56:36That's so beautifully written. It was beautifully.
- 56:38Written I just. Had to.
- 56:40I had to share it so. So well written.
- 56:43Yeah, whoever you, wherever you are, surprise lobotomy, I hope
- 56:47you're doing well. I know it's been 10 years, but
- 56:49it was a beautiful review. And it really was.
- 56:52Really hit everything on the head.
- 56:54So, Liliana, before we get into the spoiler section, what would
- 56:58you rate this show out of five's Hold you bottles?
- 57:01I've been thinking because I don't know, would I put it out
- 57:06that do you do halves? I do half.
- 57:10Yeah, I. Probably say, then I probably
- 57:12say a 4.5. Like I, I don't think I would go
- 57:16like 5. There's a couple of *** things
- 57:19that I don't think I can ignore. So I don't think I will go 5,
- 57:23but I would go 4.5. That would be my rating 4.5.
- 57:29Same 4.5 both 4 point fives across the board.
- 57:34We really, really love this show.
- 57:36Yeah, as you can see, and it's very nuanced and layered and the
- 57:41characters are just so fun to be around and very interesting and
- 57:47a lot of positives about this show.
- 57:49And we really did not spoil anything about the show.
- 57:54No, we did not give away anything, nothing, all.
- 57:59So we are going to get into spoilers right after this.
- 58:05Excuse me. I can't.
- 58:08I have. No, I'm sorry.
- 58:14What? All right, we're on the other
- 58:19side of spoilers. Anything goes, we are going to
- 58:22spoil. It's okay.
- 58:23That's love. It is a 10 year old drama, but
- 58:26we highly encourage you to go watch it for yourself.
- 58:29Please, please go watch it for yourself and come back and
- 58:34finish listening to this episode.
- 58:36So I guess we'll start in the beginning.
- 58:39In episode 1, they show him being stabbed by his brother
- 58:44immediately after the older brother is released from
- 58:48president. We jump right in, don't we?
- 58:51We just. Go right into it.
- 58:53It is so shocking. We get the shared house, so we
- 58:58get introduced to these three people that live together, this
- 59:01found family so to speak. And then we get a time trip of
- 59:0426 months later, 2 years later, she's a psychiatrist and they
- 59:11are treating Lee L like the actress.
- 59:14Lee L is playing a battered trans woman who is being
- 59:19admitted because her family abused her for chopping off her
- 59:22balls. And I don't say that like to be
- 59:25flippant. That is what her brother said
- 59:28like that. That's literally the line that
- 59:31her, the trans woman's brother said and the aunties or calling
- 59:37a shaman to beat the demon out of her and all this stuff like
- 59:41trying to cure the trans out of her.
- 59:45Yeah. And our female lead, Jesus, who
- 59:49like wants to transfer Lee L to a psychiatric ward.
- 59:54Otherwise the family can do whatever they want to her within
- 59:57the hospital, which I don't quite understand that either.
- 1:00:00Like you can just beat up on a family member while they're in
- 1:00:02the hospital. I was confused about that, but
- 1:00:06OK. She quizzes the interns that she
- 1:00:10has with her because it seems like she is of a higher ranking.
- 1:00:14Like, she's not necessarily a resident, but she's not a
- 1:00:17professor yet. No, no, I think she's like in
- 1:00:20the between. She's training to become one,
- 1:00:23but she's not quite, you know, quite yet.
- 1:00:25She's an inbetweener, but she has some underlings that are
- 1:00:28interning with her that are residents or something with with
- 1:00:32her and so she quizzes them. What are we going to do about
- 1:00:35this trans woman patient Lee L What is our plan of care for
- 1:00:39her? One guy says let's take her
- 1:00:42history down about their childhood, adolescence, gender
- 1:00:46roles, that she's like bye, no next, what do you think?
- 1:00:50And goes to the next intern. The next one's like she didn't
- 1:00:54do anything wrong so we should just discharge.
- 1:00:56Her. I was just going to say next,
- 1:00:58Next, Barry. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:00She was. The intern was like, yeah, she,
- 1:01:04she when she was getting sex reassignment surgery, she didn't
- 1:01:06have any psychological problem except for gender identity
- 1:01:09disorder. And another intern chimes in.
- 1:01:12Being gay isn't a psychological problem, but a problem that has
- 1:01:16to do with preference. And she's just like, bro, like,
- 1:01:20shut up. Like she can't like deal with
- 1:01:22these interns who have competing and wrong ideas about the plan
- 1:01:28of care for this poor trans woman who is just getting beat
- 1:01:32on by her family. Like it's a basically attempted
- 1:01:35murder at this point. It really is.
- 1:01:37It really is so off the bat, like from jump we get a very
- 1:01:44interesting and controversial patient.
- 1:01:49We do. We do, right?
- 1:01:52It's not something that you would have like 10 years ago,
- 1:01:55like just going to 10. Years ago 10.
- 1:01:58Years ago, seeing that in a show in a light that isn't mocking or
- 1:02:05anything, it's again, we'll, I think we'll say this a lot
- 1:02:09throughout this episode, but it's groundbreaking.
- 1:02:12It is. It's groundbreaking and you can
- 1:02:15see that these interns have varying levels of experience,
- 1:02:21but also they are audience proxies.
- 1:02:25Yeah, I was going to say that's yeah.
- 1:02:27They are meant to represent the audience and their limited
- 1:02:29knowledge or how they might feel toward this patient like the
- 1:02:33trans woman. So her reaction and how she
- 1:02:37eventually handles this patient, which is with compassion and to
- 1:02:42obviously just get her out of the situation like her, she was
- 1:02:45basically saying why don't you just go non contact with your
- 1:02:49family there? They do not understand you.
- 1:02:52They will never understand you. You.
- 1:02:54Need to leave. That's basically.
- 1:02:56You just need to leave. You need to leave the situation.
- 1:02:59They're going to kill you was her point.
- 1:03:03She was basically saying you need to prioritize yourself.
- 1:03:07Like you need to stop trying to understand your abusers, these
- 1:03:11aggressors, which they're your blood relations and you know,
- 1:03:16prioritize yourself. But just you're on the line.
- 1:03:20Yeah, just that alone as well. In a society where your elders
- 1:03:25are to be respected. Exactly.
- 1:03:27Flies in the face of Confucianism.
- 1:03:29It's so I was just like, I can't.
- 1:03:33It's right off the bat. It's right there.
- 1:03:35It's right there. They are just showing you such
- 1:03:40to us right now in 2024, even in a like even in Asia right now
- 1:03:46now that's such a rare thing to say.
- 1:03:49It's changing, but it's so slow. But like to us Westerners,
- 1:03:54that's even like that's a more obvious thing.
- 1:03:57If something is not working for you, you need to prioritize
- 1:04:02yourself, your mental health, your mental well-being.
- 1:04:04And I think like millennials onwards are really taking that
- 1:04:09into account and pushing that forward into other generations.
- 1:04:13But I think to have that in a show, in a Korean show 10 years
- 1:04:19ago, I as soon as I pressed play, I was like, this is mind
- 1:04:23boggling to me that that is what's happening straight off
- 1:04:29the bat. Like I it's flying against
- 1:04:32everything that Korean culture kind of stands for, in a sense.
- 1:04:38Yeah, So then we move on. We find out because nobody's
- 1:04:43perfect in this show. Literally nobody is perfect.
- 1:04:46Just like life. She has a sex phobia.
- 1:04:50Our female lead has a sex phobia.
- 1:04:52Really. She says it's an insecurity and
- 1:04:56relationship avoidance. And even though she has a
- 1:05:01boyfriend who's cheating on her, which comes out later, which is
- 1:05:03really funny of a, of a situation, but that's her thing.
- 1:05:08Like, that's her issue that she has to work through throughout
- 1:05:12the show. She meets the male lead in the
- 1:05:15first episode. They're going on like, a
- 1:05:18television program together. Yeah.
- 1:05:22And she is the expert, like psychiatrist that they bring on
- 1:05:26this show. And he is this famous writer who
- 1:05:30is also on this panel. She comes in and she jokes that
- 1:05:35he she hopes he's not disappointed that she's a woman
- 1:05:38psychiatrist instead of the scheduled male psychologist
- 1:05:41because it was going to be Sombe who was going to go on the show.
- 1:05:44And he was like, why don't you go on and said he was like off
- 1:05:47like having sex with his wife before she like boarded a plane
- 1:05:50to the states. That like he was like, I don't
- 1:05:52want to go on the show. You go on for me.
- 1:05:54You guys, you. Go.
- 1:05:57So she's filling in, the male lead says.
- 1:06:01Dead ass. Yes, he was hoping for a fiery
- 1:06:05debate, but because she's too pretty, it'll be a distraction
- 1:06:11and you get the instantly that he is a male chauvinist.
- 1:06:18Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's like looking down the
- 1:06:22makeup artist, like Blouse to like, look at her cleavage in
- 1:06:26the mirror and like the female lead is clocking all of this
- 1:06:30shit. And.
- 1:06:31She's like, I got you, I know who you are.
- 1:06:33He's just made to be unlikeable. Like right from the get go it's
- 1:06:38like. Yeah, he's a likable asshole.
- 1:06:43Exactly. Yeah.
- 1:06:45And they do this show. It's a very interesting but
- 1:06:48seemingly flawed audience participation experiments that
- 1:06:51they do. They're talking about inherent
- 1:06:54human goodness versus human evil.
- 1:06:57And they're asking if the audience if they've had bad
- 1:07:00thoughts versus if they've acted on them or if the men felt
- 1:07:04sexually aroused by a stranger versus if they've actually
- 1:07:08sexually assaulted them. And I was like, whoa, whoa,
- 1:07:10whoa. Like, this is a lot for episode
- 1:07:121. Yeah.
- 1:07:14This is all to promote some book that was just released.
- 1:07:17And she argues that the male leads books because it.
- 1:07:22I don't think. I don't think that he wrote this
- 1:07:24book that they were talking about, but that his fictional
- 1:07:28books promote unhealthy cycles of violence and sexual deviancy.
- 1:07:35Nowadays she'd probably say that his books are sexploitation or
- 1:07:39the exploitation of sexual assault for sensationalist
- 1:07:42literature. That is what she was getting at.
- 1:07:45Yeah, yeah, yeah. He says she shouldn't be looking
- 1:07:49at the rapist in his presumably there's maybe a book or two
- 1:07:54about a rapist that he's written.
- 1:07:57He says she shouldn't be looking at the rapist as a patient in
- 1:08:00need of treatment, but have compassion for the sexual
- 1:08:03assault victim who gets revenge on their aggressors in the same
- 1:08:08manner that they were assaulted. Like they get their look back in
- 1:08:12my book. Why aren't you looking at, like,
- 1:08:14that aspect of my books? And you're looking at me
- 1:08:18promoting something based on the fact that I have this rapist in
- 1:08:23my book. It's a very controversial take
- 1:08:30of them talking about this. Yeah.
- 1:08:32In Episode 1, she ends the broadcast by saying there is
- 1:08:35hope no matter how difficult the situation is, and that is the
- 1:08:40thesis for the whole show. Yeah.
- 1:08:45The entire. Basis, yeah.
- 1:08:47And I will say like right off the bat from that section there,
- 1:08:53I loved it like the back and forth between them.
- 1:08:57The. Banter.
- 1:08:59It's so good and I'm like, I exactly.
- 1:09:03And it's like it's toe to toe. There's no her being, you know,
- 1:09:09she is. And This is why it's beautiful
- 1:09:11when you write a female character in her 30s, because
- 1:09:15the kind of woman that you are in your 30s is not necessarily
- 1:09:20the same that you are in your 20s.
- 1:09:22You are more self assured, you are more confident.
- 1:09:26And I'm not saying 20 year olds can't be that, but in a
- 1:09:30situation like this where she is a very popular author and you
- 1:09:36know, in a situation where she is almost made to feel less than
- 1:09:42because she is a woman, he does that.
- 1:09:45He says that right off the bat, but she does not back down.
- 1:09:48She's like, no, no, no, no, this is my career.
- 1:09:51And the banter that they have. She doesn't stand down.
- 1:09:54There's no like hesitation on her part.
- 1:09:57There's no like she gives it as good as she gets it.
- 1:10:00And I'm like, I love this. This is what I mean when I want
- 1:10:06strong female lead characters, I don't mean I want them to be
- 1:10:09physically strong. I want her to be womanly strong
- 1:10:14in the sense that she can see the situation, but she doesn't
- 1:10:18back down. And in that type of situation,
- 1:10:21she is calling things as she sees them.
- 1:10:25She's sharp. She's determined, she's dogged,
- 1:10:27she's intelligent and like. And that catches his attention
- 1:10:32as well, yes. Yes, he like is instantly
- 1:10:35attracted to her. Exactly.
- 1:10:37And it's not like necessarily because I mean, she's a
- 1:10:40beautiful, she's a beautiful actress, but he kind of like
- 1:10:45sees this woman that is standing toe to toe with him and that
- 1:10:51attracts him. And I find those relationships
- 1:10:53to be way, way better than that instant love of, you know,
- 1:10:59you're gorgeous. I'm in love with these sort of
- 1:11:02type of situation, if you know what I mean, rather than we
- 1:11:06intellectually match and that and that makes me attracted to
- 1:11:12you. Like I just feel like that
- 1:11:14speaks to me so much better. I agree.
- 1:11:17I agree. So I love their meet cute.
- 1:11:19It is, you know, they're seeing the good and the bad in each
- 1:11:23other because she's she's already doesn't like him.
- 1:11:27She got a bad first impression of him.
- 1:11:30Rightfully so. I I mean.
- 1:11:35Yeah, so we head into episode 2. There is this chase scene with
- 1:11:41the schizophrenic patient off his meds that was at the club.
- 1:11:44It was crazy. She hits our male lead over the
- 1:11:49head and causes like a head injury.
- 1:11:52His head is like split open, he's bleeding and she's she's
- 1:11:57defending her patient. And this is rare to see that
- 1:12:02like the male lead comes to her rescue when she's being
- 1:12:05assaulted by her patient and she's like, no, don't hurt the
- 1:12:08patient. That is like that go flies
- 1:12:13against like K drama tropes. It's subverting the trope of
- 1:12:19like, oh, it's a damsel in distress.
- 1:12:20She needs his assistance. He comes to her rescue and she's
- 1:12:24fighting this guy in the club who's obviously distressed and
- 1:12:27she's like, fuck off, get off of him.
- 1:12:30And like, yeah, it's great. It's great.
- 1:12:35And you see how dedicated she is as a physician.
- 1:12:38I was just going to say again, she's very dedicated to her job
- 1:12:42and she doesn't allow this man to just sort of bulldoze his way
- 1:12:49in. In fact, she's kind of like, I
- 1:12:52don't need your assistance right now.
- 1:12:55In fact, you're, you're making this much more difficult than it
- 1:12:58needs to be. Yeah, yeah, I, I, I enjoyed that
- 1:13:02scene as well. It's crazy.
- 1:13:05There's a car chase scene. I mean, it's wild.
- 1:13:08It's wild. Then we get a new housemate in
- 1:13:13the house. A new bombshell joins the villa
- 1:13:16because there he goes to live in his Hongbei house.
- 1:13:24He rents it out to these three people running Man Tourette's,
- 1:13:28Guy Sombe and our female lead Jesus.
- 1:13:33He goes to live there because of the plagiarism scandal with his
- 1:13:37like Bessie and his girlfriend who were cheating together.
- 1:13:42That was like a little like not so great because it was the the
- 1:13:48impetus for him leaving his office, Tel Penthouse apartment
- 1:13:53or whatever to go live in the hung their house.
- 1:13:57But I don't know, like they'd never really circle back on it.
- 1:14:00And he stayed friends with his bestie like it was like nothing.
- 1:14:05I for some reason thought that that was like one of his
- 1:14:10brothers as well. I don't know why, I don't know
- 1:14:14why. Because he was, so he was.
- 1:14:17He would hang out with his mother all the time.
- 1:14:21Exactly. So I honestly thought, Oh my
- 1:14:24God, So his brother did this to him.
- 1:14:26And also I don't understand, that is one of the
- 1:14:29inconsistencies that I kind of wish because that aspect of it
- 1:14:35was used to sort of plow the story through to put him into
- 1:14:39that house to force that cohabitation, right.
- 1:14:43But later on that, again, like you said, that's never circled
- 1:14:49back on. And in fact, that fringe is key
- 1:14:54to deciphering everything that comes later on.
- 1:14:58And he's so and he's like, he obviously cares so much for him.
- 1:15:03And I'm like but but but didn't. You it's a 20 year friendship
- 1:15:07that he threw away from like this bitch who was very
- 1:15:11obviously that's shady and obviously didn't care for him.
- 1:15:18Like he couldn't tell that she was just using him to get ahead
- 1:15:23and plagiarize his work. And it was bizarre.
- 1:15:27So like I that was like, in the grand scheme of the show,
- 1:15:31whatever. But yeah, we find out that she
- 1:15:35has a sexual trauma because of her mother, her mother.
- 1:15:40She thinks that mothers should be motherly.
- 1:15:44Her mother is the legendary Kimikyon, by the way, legendary
- 1:15:49actress. I love her.
- 1:15:52I love her and she plays a, you know, someone who a mother who
- 1:15:59is flawed. Like every character is so
- 1:16:03flawed and so the mother, we don't find out until later, but
- 1:16:08the mother was basically having an affair for like all her life.
- 1:16:13All of the female leads, adult life and childhood life with
- 1:16:17this President Kim. We never see President Kim,
- 1:16:20which great. I don't want to see President
- 1:16:21Kim. Yeah, yeah, 9.
- 1:16:23Doesn't matter because her dad is in a wheelchair, severely
- 1:16:29disabled, non verbal. I think they said later that he
- 1:16:34was. He's paralyzed with the mind of
- 1:16:36a three-year old. But do you know what that's I'm
- 1:16:41just going to slide this in because it's much, much later
- 1:16:45on. Like there is actually a
- 1:16:47conversation between the mother and our female lead and she kind
- 1:16:51of says your father doesn't even understand anything.
- 1:16:55And then she comes into the room and, like the father, cries.
- 1:17:00That's not right and. Yeah.
- 1:17:01So, yeah. So it's like, no, you know,
- 1:17:03there is something that like, I think he does understand.
- 1:17:07I think he does understand. But I think the point is that he
- 1:17:11needs 24/7. Yeah.
- 1:17:14She's a caregiver before she really is a wife.
- 1:17:18And that is a really like speaking from personal
- 1:17:22experience a little bit here, that is a really hard role.
- 1:17:26That is an extremely hard role. My my dad was in.
- 1:17:33He had a brain aneurysm and that left him in a very critical
- 1:17:37situation for a fairly long time and my mom became his carer.
- 1:17:42And it's hard, like it is hard work.
- 1:17:46And I think that that is emphasized like that's you get a
- 1:17:50little look of that in this show a bitch that it takes a village
- 1:17:57to the point where, you know, female lead her sister.
- 1:18:00They're all coming in to kind of help.
- 1:18:02But at the end of the day, it is the mother's like, you know,
- 1:18:06doing, but she still has to work and keep a roof over their heads
- 1:18:11and raise the at that point, I can't quite remember.
- 1:18:14Do were they already adults when the father had the accident?
- 1:18:19I don't think they were, I think.
- 1:18:21They were, they were. Children.
- 1:18:23Yeah, yeah. So not only does she have to be
- 1:18:26a caregiver to her husband, but she also has this whole thing
- 1:18:34where she has two kids to look after and a restaurant to keep
- 1:18:39going, and it's all she. She did.
- 1:18:41It's a lot, she. Was having this affair out of an
- 1:18:45emotional need? Yeah, fulfillment out of that
- 1:18:51need, but also out of, like, a financial need.
- 1:18:55Yeah. Right.
- 1:18:57Because President Kim was also apparently giving her money.
- 1:18:59I don't know if she was like prostituting herself, Like it
- 1:19:02kind of made it seem like why was President Kim like paying
- 1:19:05for college? Like I didn't understand that
- 1:19:08necessarily why there was large sums of money being sent to the
- 1:19:14family. But and the whole thing of her
- 1:19:19not being loyal to the father and having this long standing
- 1:19:24affair with this President Kim that hurt the female lead to the
- 1:19:31point where she was distrustful of relationships and had this
- 1:19:36sexual phobia. Like she did not want to have
- 1:19:39sex was basically a version of 30s in her 30s.
- 1:19:43And the whole thing for her to unpack that I thought was really
- 1:19:48well done. And for her to finally
- 1:19:53understand where her mom was coming from and why she needed
- 1:19:58that. She needed that relationship to
- 1:20:02help her sustain her so that she could do this caregiving 24/7.
- 1:20:09You know she's not getting that emotional.
- 1:20:12Support. Support.
- 1:20:14No, she is the emotional support.
- 1:20:17From her husband at all. It's like she's she's let alone
- 1:20:24physical needs. Like her, her, you know, she
- 1:20:26wants to have sex like that's not that's.
- 1:20:29She's not getting any of that. Next, not getting any of that,
- 1:20:31she has no partner. But yeah, she still has to give
- 1:20:36a lot of herself to everything. And it's like at the end of the
- 1:20:40day, there's only so much you can give of yourself without
- 1:20:44looking after yourself, if that makes sense, Like.
- 1:20:47Exactly. There has to be a point where
- 1:20:50you have to put your own needs 1st.
- 1:20:53And that is interesting because I feel like that's a message
- 1:20:56that holds true throughout the show for various parts of the
- 1:21:00show. And it comes around for I think
- 1:21:02every single character character that at some point the character
- 1:21:07to resolve their own trauma or their own problems, they have to
- 1:21:12put themselves 1st. And I think that was very
- 1:21:15interesting and also very cleverly done, like just
- 1:21:18throughout the whole drama. I felt that it was the term
- 1:21:23nowadays would be self-care. It was a form of self-care and
- 1:21:28self love to you know, have this affair no matter how cuz it was
- 1:21:34selfish. And sometimes you need to be a
- 1:21:37little selfish you. Need to be selfish, and I think
- 1:21:39that's what she came to terms with, is that like mom needed to
- 1:21:42be selfish in order to be selfless toward her father.
- 1:21:47I think, like it's beautifully done in this show, that at first
- 1:21:55glance you really dislike the mother, like at first glance,
- 1:22:00because you don't understand her, you don't understand where
- 1:22:02she's coming from. Like you don't get her, but as
- 1:22:06the show goes on, you become to you come to empathize with her.
- 1:22:11And it's like that review was saying you kind of come to
- 1:22:15empathize with every single character in one way or another.
- 1:22:18And the mother's journey, I like that she's not even in essence,
- 1:22:25not even that big of a character, but she has depth and
- 1:22:30she's well developed and you come to understand her.
- 1:22:34So I I think that's a plus all around for this show that most
- 1:22:38of the characters even like secondary, you know, characters
- 1:22:42that a lot of people would dub, you know, not necessary for the
- 1:22:45show or, you know, reasons or they would be used to further
- 1:22:50the plot. That's not the case here.
- 1:22:51Like these characters are well developed and I really really
- 1:22:54enjoyed that. So moving on, at the end of this
- 1:22:58episode we get a really funny, funny scene because our male
- 1:23:03lead sticks his foot in it. He spills the beans at the
- 1:23:06soccer game night that her boyfriend is cheating on her
- 1:23:10with the PA and she goes when she goes.
- 1:23:15What did you say? Like, she like, clarifies and he
- 1:23:18says, yeah, I saw them when we were at that TV recording, yadda
- 1:23:23yadda, yadda. And he, like, spills the beans
- 1:23:25because he thought they were in an open relationship.
- 1:23:28Yeah, yeah, yeah. He like got it in his head.
- 1:23:32Relationship, hey. He was like, oh, I didn't know
- 1:23:34she was like that. He smells of beans and she goes
- 1:23:39ape shit. She go.
- 1:23:40When she turns off the TV in the middle of the game, I was like
- 1:23:43Oh my God, like I braced myself even though I had already seen
- 1:23:47this episode. And she confronts the boyfriend
- 1:23:51like right there. See, that is something that I
- 1:23:53really, really liked. I really liked the fact that she
- 1:24:01doesn't let him like the boyfriend ex-boyfriend talk her
- 1:24:07out of it. She's like no we're done we are
- 1:24:09done. Like I but it makes sense.
- 1:24:13It makes sense with her character to do that.
- 1:24:16If they have gone the route of her character kind of like being
- 1:24:21on the fence about taking him back or anything.
- 1:24:23It wouldn't make sense because her character.
- 1:24:25One of her issues is that relationship phobia and it is
- 1:24:29stemmed from her mother having an an affair and everything.
- 1:24:32It would be ridiculous for her to even for one second to be
- 1:24:36like. Wishy washy and like.
- 1:24:38I don't exactly I. Think I'll take him back?
- 1:24:40And she's like he was. Sorry, she's like fuck you
- 1:24:43leave. Go.
- 1:24:45We're done. Bye.
- 1:24:46No explanation needed. Done.
- 1:24:48And. We were together for almost a
- 1:24:50year, 300 days. They were celebrating the 300
- 1:24:54day anniversary and he was like, yes, we're finally going to have
- 1:24:57sex. Do you remember?
- 1:24:58He was like so excited because he thought that they're going to
- 1:25:00have sex. 100 you thought I laughed so hard at the ensuing
- 1:25:05fight with the food because they had all this food game night,
- 1:25:08game day food out and they started throwing food, throwing
- 1:25:12crunches, crotch shots. Our male lead gets like hit in
- 1:25:16the crotch and he's like, I don't understand, like how?
- 1:25:18This is why. Am I getting my?
- 1:25:20Games and why am I catching strays?
- 1:25:22It was so funny. It is classic K drama humor and
- 1:25:29ROM com shenanigans and you know what it what a recent show
- 1:25:33reminded me of like this type of humor was Love next door.
- 1:25:37Love next door. Yes, in the 1st 2:00.
- 1:25:39Episodes there was. Like spring onions?
- 1:25:42Yes, with the spring onions, she was like hitting.
- 1:25:44That whole scene from Love Next Door is reminiscent of like 10
- 1:25:49years ago. This was the style.
- 1:25:52But this is what we mean when we're saying these are the
- 1:25:56blueprints that you still see in today's dramas.
- 1:26:00Like you, I don't think you can quite grasp these new dramas
- 1:26:06without at least knowing. I'm not saying go back and watch
- 1:26:09the full catalogue, but like, without at least knowing a
- 1:26:13couple of the older dramas. All that was needed was the
- 1:26:17bloody kimchi slap at that point.
- 1:26:19Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it was great.
- 1:26:22But because the housemates rally like so like because they're
- 1:26:27like you fucking cheated and like running man, just like
- 1:26:30flies at the boyfriend. It's so.
- 1:26:32Great. I love it.
- 1:26:34So this episode ends with because our male lead is so
- 1:26:40suave and charming and like he's always like putting on the
- 1:26:45moves. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:26:47Like it always seems like he has.
- 1:26:49So he comes up to her room with a bottle of wine and two wine
- 1:26:55glasses, and he's like, I think you need a drink.
- 1:26:59And like, is offering her some wine.
- 1:27:01And she's like, yeah, I'll take some wine.
- 1:27:04I love when she fills up her glass and she's like, no more
- 1:27:07all the way to the top, keep it going, keep it coming.
- 1:27:11He fills up the wine glass all the way and she goes to take a
- 1:27:14sip and goes and like throws it. Right in his.
- 1:27:19Face just this full wine glass right in his face.
- 1:27:22And I vividly remember that scene from when I first watched
- 1:27:26it 10 years ago. I love that scene.
- 1:27:28It's so. Iconic to me, yeah.
- 1:27:31And also because you can see like on the male lead's face
- 1:27:35that he was not expecting that at all.
- 1:27:38Like you could just see it in his face.
- 1:27:40And he's like, he has that face of what the hell did, What did
- 1:27:44just happen? Yeah, she closes, but then she
- 1:27:48goes back in her room, closes the door and she's like, I can't
- 1:27:51believe this guy, yadda yadda, like bitching about him.
- 1:27:53And he knocks on her door again and she's like, what the hell
- 1:27:56does he want now? She opens the door and he throws
- 1:27:59wine in her face because his whole shtick is like, I give as
- 1:28:03much as I get. I, you know, I'm you give me,
- 1:28:06I'm going to give it back as much as I get.
- 1:28:09He's always like tit for tat and so he throws the wine back in
- 1:28:13her face. It's so funny.
- 1:28:15It really is. It really is.
- 1:28:17And that that's like back and forth the.
- 1:28:19Light this is a ROM com enemies. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:28:23yeah, yeah. And it's.
- 1:28:24So fun to see them. So we get into episode 3.
- 1:28:29She wants to kick him out of the house because he's annoying her
- 1:28:33and she's calling it sexual harassment.
- 1:28:35I don't know if I would go so far as to call it sexual
- 1:28:38harassment, but he's basically pursuing her when she wants
- 1:28:43nothing to do with him. But he's not he's not going like
- 1:28:46too far necessarily. I would say I.
- 1:28:49Don't think he is, but I think like for her she just doesn't
- 1:28:52like him so she. Has her her complexes right,
- 1:28:56Like she's she's a verse to relationships.
- 1:28:58She doesn't like this guy already.
- 1:29:00She thinks he's a male chauvinist.
- 1:29:01She wants him to fuck out the house.
- 1:29:02So like she's using all of these tricks and and buzzwords to get
- 1:29:07him out. So she's calling sexual
- 1:29:09harassment on him. What she does, though, is she
- 1:29:12clocks his narcissistic personality disorder, and she
- 1:29:16says he's like a hunter pursuing his quarry, that he's obsessed
- 1:29:19with conquering her and getting her into bed.
- 1:29:21And I would say at this point in the show, she's not necessarily
- 1:29:25wrong. She's not.
- 1:29:27No, she's not. And she's also thinking that he
- 1:29:29broke up her relationship on purpose, like unleashing this
- 1:29:33bombshell revelation at the opportune time.
- 1:29:37And he says, like, no, it's a true mistake.
- 1:29:40It all this bravado that I have that I displayed at the talk
- 1:29:44show. I'm really like, kind of dumb.
- 1:29:48I'm not that tactful. In.
- 1:29:50Real life. So he's trying to convince her
- 1:29:53like, look, I'm not this isn't a strategy to try and get you
- 1:29:58like, I really thought you were in an open relationship.
- 1:30:01I like I read the whole thing wrong, she says.
- 1:30:04Is someone else's pain funny to you that you would even write
- 1:30:07about it? Because by now she's bitching at
- 1:30:09him in his room and he's got all these sticky notes.
- 1:30:13He's planning his next book. And he says I even sell off my
- 1:30:18pain to live. Why would I care about another's
- 1:30:21pain? Yeah.
- 1:30:23And I'm like, yeah. The ex-boyfriend comes back in
- 1:30:29the rain. Oh my God, that scene.
- 1:30:31Bro begging for a second chance. She's just like which part of
- 1:30:36no. He says that she's abnormal
- 1:30:39because he waited 300 plus days to have sex with her.
- 1:30:42She's not putting out. He says do you know how hard it
- 1:30:46was? And I have my notes in all caps
- 1:30:48bro fuck off. Right off.
- 1:30:51Like right off dude, he's a douchebag.
- 1:30:55And I think that the show is also like with the boyfriend
- 1:30:59demanding sex, that is also like audience proxy.
- 1:31:05Because I feel like even today in Korea, there's such a
- 1:31:10prevalence for this right in this highly patriarchal society
- 1:31:15that men get what they want. Men have needs.
- 1:31:19Men don't need to use a condom because like, yada yada yada,
- 1:31:23all these things in this show, it makes him look stupid.
- 1:31:26It makes him look like an asshole.
- 1:31:28Yeah, because he is. Because he is.
- 1:31:31And so I like that they are challenging these things that
- 1:31:36like, you should have sex with them because you've been dating
- 1:31:39for so long. And it's like, why?
- 1:31:42I have issues. I have things I need to work
- 1:31:44out. Like you couldn't just wait.
- 1:31:46And I love the fact also that she doesn't let his opinions
- 1:31:52define who she is. And I adored that because
- 1:31:56normally you would kind of see he's trying to shift all the
- 1:32:01blame onto her. What he's doing is I went to
- 1:32:04that, I went out and cheated because you're not putting out.
- 1:32:08That's basically what he's saying.
- 1:32:10She's like, no, no, it's your fault.
- 1:32:12If you are, it's your fault. You cheated because you wanted
- 1:32:15to cheat. If you wanted to be a respectful
- 1:32:19person, you would have waited. It's that simple.
- 1:32:23It's that simple. If you were truly in this
- 1:32:25relationship for the right reasons, you would have waited.
- 1:32:29And I like I said, I love the fact that she doesn't let his
- 1:32:33actions define who she is as a person.
- 1:32:39I think by this point I was like, Dio, he's not real.
- 1:32:44Really. Not my original watch.
- 1:32:47Oh, OK, OK. On the re watch, I was like,
- 1:32:49it's very obvious that he's not real because he shows up to drop
- 1:32:55off his manuscript for review and like, how would he know
- 1:33:01where he lives? How would he know where the male
- 1:33:03lead lives? How would he know this whole
- 1:33:06drama with the plagiarism and all this stuff with the
- 1:33:09childhood friend? That's not public knowledge.
- 1:33:13In my mind I was just like, oh, he must have told him off
- 1:33:17screen, my good mind of mine. Right.
- 1:33:19Like, you start making up, like, little things.
- 1:33:23Exactly. Fill in the blanks and make it
- 1:33:26work so that Dio isn't like this outlier and you have no red
- 1:33:30flags for him. But really, he's just showing up
- 1:33:34out of nowhere, like random places.
- 1:33:38Yeah, Yeah. And The thing is when they go
- 1:33:41back and explain it, it makes no sense because she's like, she's
- 1:33:47like, he says, oh, I had the script in my hand and she
- 1:33:52remembers and he's like, he's, he's making, but he has nothing
- 1:33:57in his hand. And I'm like, remembers to look
- 1:34:01at his hand like it's I, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:06And then even early on, Dio's manuscript seems to imply that
- 1:34:10the male lead is the culprit in a murder.
- 1:34:14And the title of the story that Dio is writing is Two brothers,
- 1:34:20and the imprisoned older brother insists that he's innocent of
- 1:34:26the murder of their father. This whole thing is very close
- 1:34:30to. Hey, story.
- 1:34:33The Male Leads story, exactly. Yeah.
- 1:34:35There's a reference to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in the
- 1:34:39Male Leads radio broadcast. He says psychiatrists will say
- 1:34:42that we are all patients. Just as we catch a cold, we
- 1:34:45continually bear an illness of the mind we need.
- 1:34:49We need to acknowledge that and understand that we are all
- 1:34:51hurting. Then the world will be a bit
- 1:34:53more beautiful than it is now. And I'm like, oh, that's so
- 1:34:56nice. That is.
- 1:34:58We don't understand that like later in the show, he is going
- 1:35:02to be severely I'll. Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 1:35:07We're still in episode 3. They are.
- 1:35:09The housemates are out drinking and Homeboy brings up consent
- 1:35:15when the two psychiatrists are talking about who needs therapy.
- 1:35:21Slash, who's a perv in this couple because she what happens
- 1:35:26with the female lead, which I don't know if this is
- 1:35:28necessarily kosher, but she workshops her patients and their
- 1:35:33care when she's like with her friends and especially when
- 1:35:36she's with her somebody. She's like, I watched a movie
- 1:35:39The other day where this couple was going through this and this
- 1:35:44and this and like, what do you think they should do?
- 1:35:48How do you think they should handle it?
- 1:35:49And like she workshops their care, like how she should handle
- 1:35:54their their situation. That's probably where you think
- 1:35:58this is probably not ethically right.
- 1:36:01Not probably ethically, right, But also she keeps getting good
- 1:36:05answers. So I'm sure that's why she keeps
- 1:36:07doing it is because doing it. Yeah, good answers.
- 1:36:10So. But in this case, she says she
- 1:36:13watched a movie. They're actually her patients.
- 1:36:17And he says the point is when the man was sleeping with the
- 1:36:21woman, did he have her consent? Can I use the handcuffs?
- 1:36:25Can I use the belt? You need to ask if the girl
- 1:36:28doesn't want to, you shouldn't. And I was like Nope, got to
- 1:36:33pause the show 10 years ago. Years.
- 1:36:35This is years before the Me Too movement here in the West, years
- 1:36:42before Burning Sun. This show was talking about
- 1:36:45consent, clear as day. And doing it very well.
- 1:36:50And doing it very well. Yeah.
- 1:36:53Yeah, so he brought that up. We're in episode 4.
- 1:36:56He kisses her. This is after like they get into
- 1:37:00this scuffle. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:03At the bar that same night, they get into a scuffle and they
- 1:37:06start running. They book it and they're evading
- 1:37:09the police and these awful like gangster like young people who
- 1:37:12like came over and laid hands on running man, triggering a
- 1:37:16Tourette's episode. A Tourette's?
- 1:37:18Yeah. Yeah, so they land back at his
- 1:37:21office till apartment and he kisses her.
- 1:37:24And I remember this scene like it was yesterday, like I was
- 1:37:27watching it. I was like Oh my God, yes, he
- 1:37:30kisses her. I don't know if I like the
- 1:37:32placement of this kiss though, because she just finished saying
- 1:37:37how much how she's much better than she was 10 years ago in
- 1:37:41terms of like the severity of her phobia of her complex that
- 1:37:47she can kiss and stand to be touched.
- 1:37:49Now she's worked on how she perceives love, but while she's
- 1:37:54off medication and not breaking out in cold sweats over kissing
- 1:37:58a guy, she's still working on it.
- 1:38:00Yeah, exactly. It's.
- 1:38:01Still a work in progress. And he kisses her right after
- 1:38:04this. And I was like, what?
- 1:38:07And right after he had just talked about consent and like,
- 1:38:11if she doesn't want to and all this stuff and she's so averse
- 1:38:15to him right so far in the show. And he's just like, plants one
- 1:38:20on her. And I'm like, I don't know if
- 1:38:23that's the best lad. Like, it doesn't land.
- 1:38:26Yeah, like 10 years later. That's probably a dated kiss, if
- 1:38:31I if I would say. So what he was saying before the
- 1:38:35kiss was you keep imagining like the way that she's prepping
- 1:38:40herself for a scenario where she's going to kiss a guy or
- 1:38:43she's going to have sex or something is she keeps imagining
- 1:38:46like kissing somebody over and over again and it's sort of like
- 1:38:50desensitizing her to the concept of it.
- 1:38:54And he's just like, you just got to do it.
- 1:38:56Yeah, and he's like, you just got to do it.
- 1:38:59And that's when he kisses her so I understand what he was on
- 1:39:03about but also like not. It's not timed very well I would
- 1:39:08say. Not good timing.
- 1:39:09She slaps him, but then this, the follow up, I was like, this
- 1:39:13is strangely super sexy because she gets up to leave.
- 1:39:18He has a like up against a wall and he keeps turning on and off
- 1:39:22the lights using and then he's like using a lighter to like
- 1:39:28light up the room and light them up as well.
- 1:39:31And his face is right there in front of her, basically
- 1:39:34caressing. Hers is very intimate.
- 1:39:37And he's making this gigantic point that when she finally
- 1:39:41falls in love, it'll only be a moment that will lift this love
- 1:39:47darkness that she's been experiencing.
- 1:39:50And it's OK that she hasn't loved for 30 years and that her
- 1:39:54300 day relationship ended like it's fine.
- 1:39:58Just kind of, yeah. Almost comforting her, but in
- 1:40:00this very cheeky way. It's in his very own way.
- 1:40:04I would say it's very him the way he does it.
- 1:40:07Yeah, exactly. But I like that part more than
- 1:40:12the kiss that preceded that. I would agree.
- 1:40:16I would agree. There's little zingers here and
- 1:40:20there that are like a little bit problematic and dated and it's
- 1:40:23running man is worried because she didn't come home last night.
- 1:40:27She ended up she was so like tired and drunk that she just
- 1:40:31slept over at his house in in the office till running man is
- 1:40:36worried. He's like, what if the male lead
- 1:40:39like raped her? He's got valid concern, right?
- 1:40:43Valid concern. Completely valid concern, but
- 1:40:47the Sombe dock says. Do you think she'd fall victim
- 1:40:52to that? And is the male lead lacking
- 1:40:56that he'd resort to raping her basically?
- 1:40:59And I was like, that is totally flawed, outmoded thinking.
- 1:41:06Could happen to anyone. Yes.
- 1:41:09So I was like, Oh no. You're showing your age now.
- 1:41:13Yes, that was that little thing was showing its age.
- 1:41:19They go and visit this like schizophrenic, old schizophrenic
- 1:41:22patient of hers who's pregnant but married, married and
- 1:41:27pregnant now. Foreshadowing Foreshadowing.
- 1:41:30Foreshadowing. Yeah, but he saves her from
- 1:41:36drowning because she has like a suicidal attempt.
- 1:41:41Episode. Yeah.
- 1:41:42This whole thing was really strange.
- 1:41:43I thought this was really strange because the scene.
- 1:41:45Of was. Mostly because of the staging of
- 1:41:48it was weird. She's standing with her husband
- 1:41:53at the shore and all of a sudden she's like 20 feet out in the
- 1:41:58water. He made it nowhere.
- 1:41:59And her husband's still on the shore.
- 1:42:01And I'm like, yeah, what was he doing?
- 1:42:03He, she was standing right next to him.
- 1:42:05It's not like he went anywhere. And then he came back and she
- 1:42:07was trying to commit suicide by, like, drowning herself.
- 1:42:10No, he was still standing there, like yelling at her to come
- 1:42:14back. And I'm like, what the fuck?
- 1:42:16I I was confused about the logistics on that.
- 1:42:18I was like, does he not know how to swim?
- 1:42:20But even if. Not then he got in the water and
- 1:42:22that's like right then he got in the water and he couldn't swim.
- 1:42:29So then two people were drowning a drowning.
- 1:42:32But then then the male lead goes out and someone else goes to get
- 1:42:37the husband and the male lead goes to get the pregnant
- 1:42:41schizophrenic wife. So it's just the scene at the
- 1:42:45the shot of him grabbing her and then just standing up in like 4
- 1:42:50feet of water with her on his shoulder, pounding on him,
- 1:42:54beating on him, struggling against him.
- 1:42:56But then she like just all of a sudden goes limp and the female
- 1:43:00lead has to do see like terrible CPR on her.
- 1:43:04That's just. So bad.
- 1:43:05It's so bad. I was like, that is not CPR.
- 1:43:08That's something else. Yeah, so bad.
- 1:43:11So that whole scene, I was like, can we just like, delete it?
- 1:43:14Like, I don't know. What is this?
- 1:43:16It's not. Necessary.
- 1:43:19So I didn't like that they end up spending the night, I think,
- 1:43:23out in this town. And she asked him, are you
- 1:43:27someone who thinks love conquers all too?
- 1:43:29That love will always give you only happiness, joy, flutters
- 1:43:33and courage. And he says it will also give
- 1:43:36pain, blame, hurt, sadness, despair and misery.
- 1:43:39It will also give the strength to overcome those.
- 1:43:43It has to be at least that to be love.
- 1:43:46And I was like, Oh my God. That's a beautiful description,
- 1:43:49yeah. She catches him asleep in the
- 1:43:51park bathroom. The cleanest park bathroom that
- 1:43:55I've ever seen in my life. So clean I was like where?
- 1:44:00Share your tips. Sparkling and he shares with her
- 1:44:05that his stepfather would beat him and his older brother would
- 1:44:08beat him. His older brother would beat him
- 1:44:11for getting beat by the stepdad. So one day the stepdad
- 1:44:16physically abused him so bad because he wanted the gambling
- 1:44:21money. So homeboy just took off on
- 1:44:23foot, no? Shoes.
- 1:44:25Just like Dio earlier in the show.
- 1:44:30And that is key. That is such a key.
- 1:44:33So key, Because it was a rural town, there weren't many places
- 1:44:38to hide, so we just hid in the public latrine and dove into the
- 1:44:42filthy pile of shit at the bottom just to evade his
- 1:44:46stepdad. And he's laughing as he tells
- 1:44:49the story. And since then he's slept in the
- 1:44:53bathroom because he's felt it's the safest place.
- 1:44:56So this is like another piece of the puzzle right for our mill
- 1:45:01lead is that he has OCD, which we'd never even covered before,
- 1:45:04but he has OCDI think it's pretty mild, but he has OCD.
- 1:45:08He sleeps in the bathroom because it's safe.
- 1:45:10Based on childhood trauma. Yep.
- 1:45:13And she's OK with these things. She understands him.
- 1:45:17She understands what it is. And she knows that her, his
- 1:45:21brother is in prison for murder and she's OK.
- 1:45:25It's just like he has found his person.
- 1:45:28He has because he's truly shown her all of his aspects and she
- 1:45:34still there. She's not running for the hills.
- 1:45:38So. They go on this hike in this
- 1:45:41most beautiful valley with the most beautiful water feature,
- 1:45:44and he dunks her in this like Clearwater.
- 1:45:48They're playing around, splashing together.
- 1:45:50All this I remember from my original watch.
- 1:45:53I was like, Oh my God, it's, it's so vivid.
- 1:45:56It's beautiful. He kisses her again.
- 1:46:00And. She's speechless, she's
- 1:46:04flustered, her heart's beating wildly, she's having a physical
- 1:46:07reaction to him, she doesn't know what to do with herself and
- 1:46:11they like have a full on make out session.
- 1:46:13Yep. She is rocked like to her core
- 1:46:17after this whole interaction, they had to go get new clothes.
- 1:46:21Like he low key like buys her clothes.
- 1:46:24That's another like little trope as well.
- 1:46:26And he confronts her outside the car.
- 1:46:29He wants to know if this reaction that she's having
- 1:46:32because she's trying to push him away is because of her anxiety
- 1:46:36disorder or not. Like what's going on.
- 1:46:39He says the second kiss because they kissed again and they made
- 1:46:42out. He's like that second kiss.
- 1:46:45You like that one like? He's like, yeah, yeah, he's.
- 1:46:47Literally like in her face about it.
- 1:46:49He's like, no, we got to talk about it because you like that
- 1:46:51kiss. She was into that one.
- 1:46:54She's like denial, denial, denial.
- 1:46:57Yeah, she. Thinks and she keeps saying like
- 1:46:59throughout the show he's such a Playboy he'll just hate on
- 1:47:03anyone. And it's basically like she's
- 1:47:07she's trying to like distance herself from him because she
- 1:47:09doesn't want to get hurt and he does give off Playboy vibes.
- 1:47:13So anyway. He really does.
- 1:47:15He does. He's such a player, so.
- 1:47:19That's like as you as again, as the show goes on, that's just
- 1:47:24the facade that starts to peel away from him, and it's so
- 1:47:28nicely done. So he says not just anyone.
- 1:47:33He doesn't just flirt and hit on anyone but people I have
- 1:47:37feelings for. I wasn't just hitting on you, I
- 1:47:40kissed you because I like you. And he full on confesses.
- 1:47:45He does and it's like it's so and The thing is, I will say
- 1:47:49when I while I was watching it, I was like, Oh my God, he's
- 1:47:54already confessing. It's only episode 5 and he's
- 1:47:57already confessing. It's like, you know what I mean?
- 1:48:00Everything happens quite early, but has this show proved that's
- 1:48:06fine, It works out, that's fine? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:48:10This is the episode, I think it's episode 6.
- 1:48:12He fights with Dio's dad in this rural area.
- 1:48:15This is my OST background music. OK.
- 1:48:21Problem that I had with this scene, right?
- 1:48:23Talk to me. So first of all, I wrote down
- 1:48:27that because these are my notes before knowing that Dio was
- 1:48:35imaginary, right? So I write even if the male lead
- 1:48:40is damaged, he still tried to help like Dio's character like
- 1:48:45because he see and like I wrote this because he sees himself in
- 1:48:51Dio's character and I'm like. How true that was.
- 1:48:58How true that was. And I was like, this is wild.
- 1:49:02But the little thing that I said is so while this scene is
- 1:49:06happening, they sort of have almost like this cheery
- 1:49:11background music happening. It's kind of like this.
- 1:49:15I don't know, but it's kind of like it sounds it.
- 1:49:20Remember what the needle drop was on that?
- 1:49:24Is it the So let me go. No.
- 1:49:26No no, no, no, no. Like it wasn't even AI.
- 1:49:30Don't think it was a song itself, I think it was just like
- 1:49:35a background music. I.
- 1:49:37Can't. I can't.
- 1:49:39Quite remember, but what I wrote is I didn't like how there was
- 1:49:42almost a cheery song playing while this scene was happening
- 1:49:46because it almost like when I, I, I spoke to my friend about
- 1:49:50this and I said to her, this has been so far the only thing that
- 1:49:54I haven't liked because it's such a heavy scene.
- 1:49:57Obviously at that point, I don't know that he's imaginary and
- 1:50:01that realistically nothing is happening around him.
- 1:50:05He's just on the floor in fetal position, but nobody is around
- 1:50:10him. Like I don't know that when I'm
- 1:50:12watching this episode. So to me, there's a real
- 1:50:17domestic violence scene happening, right?
- 1:50:21And they have this cherry almost like Cherry song or background
- 1:50:27music behind it and it downplays the whole scene.
- 1:50:31It almost like contradicts the scene.
- 1:50:35I don't remember what it was, but I don't remember feeling
- 1:50:38that way about that particular scene.
- 1:50:41But yeah, like that never happened.
- 1:50:44Like he doesn't find nobody. And I was like, I was like, oh,
- 1:50:53maybe they're trying to downplay the scene because there is no
- 1:50:57scene. The scene is irrelevant.
- 1:50:59Oh, very true. Like maybe they picked the music
- 1:51:01so that it's almost to throw us off the scent.
- 1:51:04Exactly. So I was like by the end, but
- 1:51:07while I was in that moment, you. Were like, what's up with him?
- 1:51:12Exactly. Watching this man getting beaten
- 1:51:16up and this kid all beaten up and this mother all beat, I was
- 1:51:20like, I don't like it So because it always felt like it was this
- 1:51:26disrespectful to like the hard moment that we were watching on
- 1:51:31screen. But then again, you come back 6
- 1:51:35episodes later or however many, 5, four episodes like, well,
- 1:51:39however many and it's like it's irrelevant because that scene
- 1:51:43never happened. And it's kind of like, OK.
- 1:51:47Yeah, I think around here they said like, he goes to the police
- 1:51:50station and they're like, why were you?
- 1:51:52Why were you over there like that?
- 1:51:55The house is abandoned and all this stuff.
- 1:51:57He's like, that's not abandoned. I think it was around this time,
- 1:52:00episode 6-7, that I realized on original watch that Dio was not
- 1:52:08real. He's a hallucination.
- 1:52:11See. I had no clue, No clue until
- 1:52:14they hit you right with it and they reveal it.
- 1:52:18Yeah, I was like, no clue. Maybe, maybe I'm giving myself
- 1:52:22too much credit and it was around here that I was getting
- 1:52:24antsy and getting a little bit like, is DIO not like, but it's
- 1:52:30questioning. Yeah.
- 1:52:31But not fully accepting the fact that idea is not real.
- 1:52:37Unoriginal Watch. Let's shout this character and
- 1:52:41you it's. So it's so tangible.
- 1:52:45It's it's, it's hard to explain unless you watch it, but it is
- 1:52:48such a Tangier. It's like, again, I've made the
- 1:52:51comparison of 6th sense before. It's like sixth sense.
- 1:52:56Like, you're like, this is a real tangible person with real
- 1:53:01issues. They have a domestic violence
- 1:53:04situation at home, and he feels particularly called to save him
- 1:53:11because of his own past. It made total sense.
- 1:53:16It made sense. Yeah.
- 1:53:18And I was today, today when I finally like realized that DO
- 1:53:24was not, you know, it was part of his imagination.
- 1:53:28It was part of his psychosis and whatnot.
- 1:53:31I came, I had this thought. How is it that an imaginary
- 1:53:36character is more fleshed out in this show than in 50% of other
- 1:53:42shows out there where the characters are real like.
- 1:53:46Stop. It's like, how is it possible
- 1:53:50that they wrote an imaginary character so well that I would
- 1:53:56be hard pressed to believe you have to pay like super attention
- 1:54:01to every single detail to hit it on the nose before, you know, or
- 1:54:07to get first couple of episodes and, you know, or you, you have
- 1:54:11an inkling. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:54:13Like, you have to to be so. Yeah.
- 1:54:16So I goodness, yeah. I just have one note for episode
- 1:54:216. Yeah.
- 1:54:22And I said, it's like the whole she goes into his bathroom and
- 1:54:28it's like the camel picture on the wall.
- 1:54:32And I wrote down like, because he says, do you know what the
- 1:54:36picture of the camel is? The nomads of four desert tie up
- 1:54:39their camels at night like this to a tree in the morning.
- 1:54:42They untie the rope, but the camel doesn't run away.
- 1:54:45It doesn't. It's because it remembers the
- 1:54:47night when it was tied to a tree, just like we remember our
- 1:54:51wounds from the past. It means that the wounds from
- 1:54:54the past, the trauma is holding onto our ankles right now.
- 1:54:58And I'm like, stop. Like, this is, it's so well
- 1:55:02written. It's imagery.
- 1:55:05It's imagery done so well. And it's such great dialogue
- 1:55:11because he's explaining exactly what he's feeling through this
- 1:55:17image and like, through art. The trauma.
- 1:55:19Yeah, this trauma is holding on to him.
- 1:55:22And I, I love that little like scene.
- 1:55:25I really did. Yeah, that was beautiful.
- 1:55:28So skipping to episode 8, they go on vacation to Okinawa and
- 1:55:35she tells him that she, I think earlier he had discovered that
- 1:55:39she had her passport in her purse at all times and it's
- 1:55:45because she always wants to be free and travel the world and
- 1:55:49that's why she always keeps it on her.
- 1:55:50So they go to Okinawa. She breaks her arm running
- 1:55:53through the parking lot on the way to the terminal.
- 1:55:57And that's why she has the cast. That's what we were talking
- 1:55:59about in the non spoiler section.
- 1:56:02How about the? Cast on her arm.
- 1:56:04Yeah. He says to her that if he could
- 1:56:09not write, he wouldn't know what to do.
- 1:56:12He jokes that maybe he'd kill himself, like Hemingway.
- 1:56:15And she says that if she was like, what if you couldn't
- 1:56:19write? Of course you could do other
- 1:56:21things, like trying to come at it from a different angle.
- 1:56:24Like, you don't have to kill yourself just because you can't
- 1:56:27write. That doesn't make no sense.
- 1:56:30Like you can do other things. She says she became a doctor
- 1:56:35because when the school kids started calling her dad a
- 1:56:38retard, she decided I'm going to become a doctor.
- 1:56:42And she did, out of pride. She wanted to learn more about
- 1:56:45the human mind, to understand her own mother better, as well
- 1:56:49as understand herself better. She said it was also an
- 1:56:52ascension of class and ambition because she grew up poor.
- 1:56:56She did. I really liked how she kind of
- 1:56:58broke down why she chose her profession.
- 1:57:01And it really had. It wasn't like a noble pursuit,
- 1:57:05right? Which I think is very key is
- 1:57:09that she was like, this is going to elevate me.
- 1:57:12You know, my father was completely incapacitated.
- 1:57:16Like, he became bedridden, essentially.
- 1:57:19My mom became a full time caregiver.
- 1:57:21And this affected me because I was bullied.
- 1:57:24Yeah, my father was bullied. And she's such a strong willed
- 1:57:28character. She was like, fuck all that
- 1:57:31noise. I'm going to become a doctor.
- 1:57:32Yeah, I'm getting one better. Yeah.
- 1:57:35OK. I'll level up, that's all.
- 1:57:37Yeah, and I love that. I think that's different, right?
- 1:57:42She. Wasn't like this.
- 1:57:42Compassionate. She's not this compassionate
- 1:57:45person and that's something that she works on throughout the show
- 1:57:49is she is compassionate, but she's not as compassionate as
- 1:57:54some of like the Doctors and other shows and other case
- 1:57:57dramas that you might come across.
- 1:57:59She is not inherently compassionate.
- 1:58:01It's something that she is working on and something that he
- 1:58:04helps her, the male lead helps her is to gain a new perspective
- 1:58:08on her patients and their unique plans of care.
- 1:58:12He causes her to ask different questions and empathize and
- 1:58:16breakdown even further her prejudices.
- 1:58:20So I really like that about this couple and about her as a
- 1:58:23doctor. In this scene, his phone rings,
- 1:58:28quote UN quote, but it doesn't. Dio is on the line and she goes,
- 1:58:33oh, does your phone ring? He's like, yeah, you didn't do
- 1:58:35it. And he gets up to talk to Dio.
- 1:58:37It is so fucking subtle. It's there, It's there.
- 1:58:40It's all there though. It's literally all there.
- 1:58:43I was so mad at myself for not catching me to that one.
- 1:58:46Yes, so mad. I know at the end of this
- 1:58:51episode they have sex on the beach.
- 1:58:53Big day. What a beautiful scene.
- 1:58:56Beautiful scene. Beautiful scene.
- 1:58:57Beautiful. Scene.
- 1:59:00She she cries post coitus. He's just like strokes her hair.
- 1:59:06He's crying with her. Definitely empathizing with her
- 1:59:11deeply. Where she's at, Yeah.
- 1:59:13Where she's at and he calls himself passive but really he's
- 1:59:18I think he's just empathizing with her.
- 1:59:19He's like feeling with her. And she asks him if he loves her
- 1:59:24and he says yes. And she goes but I don't love
- 1:59:30you yet. And I was like, she's so fucking
- 1:59:33real for that. Like she's so real.
- 1:59:37She's like, it's only been two months since we've known each
- 1:59:40other. And she's just like, I don't
- 1:59:43love you yet. Like I'm not there yet.
- 1:59:45I'm not going to say it back yet.
- 1:59:47And he just like takes it. Yeah, he's just like, OK, it's
- 1:59:50fine. That's cool.
- 1:59:51Yeah. She won't say why she's crying.
- 1:59:54She says she'll share it later and if he hears how bad she's
- 1:59:59really is, what she was thinking about and still loves her, then
- 2:00:02she'll believe that he loves her for real.
- 2:00:06Episode 10 and 11, it's them working through their
- 2:00:11relationship, you know, setting boundaries instead of him
- 2:00:15snapping at her that he's working and writing and not
- 2:00:19using a coherent sentence of like, hey, I'm working.
- 2:00:23Like can you come back in an hour or whatever?
- 2:00:25Or disappearing for days and not calling her while he works and
- 2:00:29neglecting food and sleep. Maybe they can agree to meet on
- 2:00:33certain days so then they come up with like, oh we'll meet on
- 2:00:35Fridays, we'll do date night, yadda yadda.
- 2:00:38The only note that I have for episode 10 is Dio being
- 2:00:45imaginary of our male Eat Get out of here.
- 2:00:49So that's that's when you realize.
- 2:00:52That is when I realized that that is the only note that I
- 2:00:56have for episode 10 because I was like, I get it.
- 2:01:02They're having this whole discourse of like they're trying
- 2:01:06to figure each other out. They're trying to, what they're
- 2:01:09really trying to do is they're trying to figure out how they as
- 2:01:14individuals slot into a relationship.
- 2:01:17That's what they're trying to do, right?
- 2:01:19And I was like, yes, this is very important.
- 2:01:22What about DIO just happened? What just happened?
- 2:01:26What the fuck just happened? Exactly because that's when you
- 2:01:30start to see like his brother gets called in because they find
- 2:01:35his purse out by the house. Like he gets to look at the
- 2:01:41camera footage and he's just like in his fetal position.
- 2:01:44And the Caddy is the TV footage of him in the field on the
- 2:01:50street fighting with nobody. Yeah, is jarring.
- 2:01:55It's so jarring. I was like, what?
- 2:01:57Just so that for that episode and then like even to episode
- 2:02:0211, that was all my brain was focused on and they were having
- 2:02:08all the like these conversations and yes, I I clocked to those
- 2:02:11and yes, I was watching, but all like my, I was like, it felt
- 2:02:15like I was being told. And exactly, you're reeling from
- 2:02:20that and you almost, almost miss everything that's happening with
- 2:02:25our main couple because you're like, but, but I just got hit
- 2:02:28with this and This is why I am not a big rewatcher, but I
- 2:02:34think. You might need to rewatch it.
- 2:02:36Yeah, but I was like, at some point, not in the immediate
- 2:02:40future, you know, not right now. I would say, you know, in a
- 2:02:44couple of years time or whatever, it would be something
- 2:02:47that I would probably not mind going back because now knowing
- 2:02:51what it is and what's happening, I would probably pick up on
- 2:02:54other things that I was just like, for these two episodes,
- 2:02:57like I said, I was just like, what?
- 2:02:59What, what, what, what, what, What do you know that meme, that
- 2:03:03Jennifer Lawrence meme of meme, You know, what do you mean?
- 2:03:08That was me. I was like, what do you mean?
- 2:03:11He said that. What do you mean?
- 2:03:14I thought I was I was waiting for Adm from you or a voice note
- 2:03:19from you for when when you got to these episodes, because I
- 2:03:24recommend their show to people every so often and I expect them
- 2:03:30to circle back and be like, what the fuck?
- 2:03:32Like, because these couple of episodes is when it's truly
- 2:03:37like, this is a reveal. This is when shit hits the fan.
- 2:03:41I feel like these are the episodes when they walk away
- 2:03:45from the ROM com. Like they start, there's still
- 2:03:49bits there, but this is the breakaway from the ROM com and I
- 2:03:53could kind of understand. A tonal shift.
- 2:03:56The tonal shift, this is when it happens.
- 2:04:00But like to me, whereas some people might find that, I don't
- 2:04:04know, they don't like it or they might find that it's, you know,
- 2:04:08they don't see it coming. I always thought there was going
- 2:04:12to be a tonal shift. I just didn't think it was going
- 2:04:15to be done in this manner. I didn't expect it to be with
- 2:04:19him getting severely, you know, him being ill and him having.
- 2:04:24Yeah, like I didn't see that necessarily being the tonal
- 2:04:29shift, but I saw that there was going to be 1 coming because
- 2:04:33like you can't stain, you know, 16 episodes.
- 2:04:37And plus by that point our female lead is fairly, we've got
- 2:04:43quotation marks exactly. So like.
- 2:04:46What else is going to happen? So it's going to have to be his
- 2:04:51story in the second-half. And I always thought it was
- 2:04:54going to be his brother and like that whole situation, which it
- 2:04:58is, right, It is, but I always thought but it's not at the same
- 2:05:03time because it's like it's the male lead.
- 2:05:07That's where the focus is on it's truly.
- 2:05:09Smart. I mean, it's their story and how
- 2:05:11they, how they endure, how they work through it, how she
- 2:05:15processes this news and how he processes the news that he's
- 2:05:21actually schizophrenic. Yeah.
- 2:05:24It's wild. I'm like, it's wild.
- 2:05:27I yeah, for those two episodes, like I said, I was just reeling.
- 2:05:32I was like, what do you mean? And.
- 2:05:35It's not like they didn't. It's not like they did it like
- 2:05:38without laying any Easter eggs for us.
- 2:05:42It's there. It's there.
- 2:05:44This was. Always the plan.
- 2:05:47Yeah, and as soon as they say it, it clicks in your mind.
- 2:05:50You're like, Oh my God. This makes sense this.
- 2:05:52Scene makes sense. This makes how did I not see
- 2:05:55that how dumb I am? And it's like it's brilliant
- 2:06:01that a script or a show makes you feel dumb in the best way,
- 2:06:06in the best way. Because it's like, because I
- 2:06:11watching this now, I've watched a lot of dramas, a lot of
- 2:06:16things, and I feel like I can see a lot of things coming.
- 2:06:20Like it just sort of happens. Yeah, you get comfortable with
- 2:06:25the plot piece, with the writing, the style.
- 2:06:28You just, and I'm sure other people that have watched lots of
- 2:06:31dramas feel the same way. You're it takes a lot for to
- 2:06:34surprise you. Exactly.
- 2:06:36Exactly. So when it's a lot rarer
- 2:06:40nowadays that I'm like so shocked and so caught off God,
- 2:06:44Oh my God, I promise. And this happened and I was
- 2:06:48like, what? What?
- 2:06:50Oh my. God, I'm like turning red.
- 2:06:54I'm so like jazzed. I'm like so pumped.
- 2:06:57Yeah, so I I was just like, I can't believe that a 10 year old
- 2:07:03drama is that is like it's that good.
- 2:07:06I can predict the plots of pretty much touch everything
- 2:07:09that I'm watching right now, but a 10 year old drama is just like
- 2:07:13taking it out. Yeah.
- 2:07:15I like I said, those two episodes, I was absolutely
- 2:07:18reeling. Absolutely reeling.
- 2:07:21Yeah. And I have to say, going back to
- 2:07:24the fan wars for a minute for it's it's OK to not be OK.
- 2:07:28There is a twist in it's OK to not be OK.
- 2:07:32There is for the identity of a character that you had seen
- 2:07:35throughout the show. I always felt that that was the
- 2:07:39most contrived, shitty reveal of the show.
- 2:07:45Because they've done. So much better.
- 2:07:47They could have written it better.
- 2:07:49Like it was just not it. There were no Easter eggs.
- 2:07:53It comes out of nowhere. It comes out of nowhere.
- 2:07:55That is, you know, a tonal shift really big that nobody sees
- 2:08:01coming. Like, but you don't see it
- 2:08:02coming because there's nothing there.
- 2:08:05This I will absolutely agree. This one, for example, it makes
- 2:08:11you feel dumb because it's all there, like all there, all
- 2:08:15appeal, all the info. Yeah.
- 2:08:16You just don't know how to put it together until they you.
- 2:08:19Just got bamboozled. Yeah, exactly.
- 2:08:22Whereas with it's OK to not be OK, they don't give you
- 2:08:29anything. So when it happens it's like I'm
- 2:08:31not dumb, they just didn't do it properly.
- 2:08:34Right, right. So I'm being facetious, but
- 2:08:38like, if you want to talk about writing.
- 2:08:41Anyway, going back to our show, I am so glad that it caught you
- 2:08:47off guard. Oh my God, so off God.
- 2:08:50I was not prepared for what hit me and by that point I love that
- 2:08:54character. I.
- 2:08:56You're so invested in his journey, in his, in his
- 2:09:01problems, in his complexes and in his childhood trauma.
- 2:09:06Everything about him is so clear.
- 2:09:10Yeah, I wanted him to finish his book and succeed and get out of
- 2:09:16that shitty situation with his mother.
- 2:09:19And then it's like, oh, OK, then it does come back.
- 2:09:23And he says, if you want to see me, just look in the mirror and
- 2:09:27look at what you've built. And that's the scene that we
- 2:09:30have to get to because bowling, I was bowling.
- 2:09:34And The thing is, I was watching this every day before I went to
- 2:09:38work, like, because I have time in the morning.
- 2:09:41And I was, like, crying my eyes out.
- 2:09:44And I'm like, what do I do with myself?
- 2:09:47Like, what do I do with myself going into work now?
- 2:09:51But yeah, it's like, you care about this character.
- 2:09:54You want to see him succeed. You want to see him?
- 2:09:57Well, exactly. And it's like, oh, he's not
- 2:10:00real. He's not.
- 2:10:03OK, So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go really fast through the
- 2:10:07next couple of episodes and then we're gonna get into the finale
- 2:10:10episodes and we can talk about his treatment because that's
- 2:10:13what the final few episodes is, is because he has to get
- 2:10:16admitted. Like there's no other way around
- 2:10:18it. Yeah.
- 2:10:19So yeah, in episode 11 they go on a on a talk show cuz he's got
- 2:10:25he's like a radio DJ part time. They talk about the Before
- 2:10:30trilogy from Richard Linklater. Do you know those 3 movies?
- 2:10:34No, I don't. Oh my God you have to watch
- 2:10:38those 3 movies they're so good. It stars I.
- 2:10:41Swear to God, every time I record with you, you discover
- 2:10:45that I haven't watched something you.
- 2:10:47Gotta watch these movies. They're so good.
- 2:10:50You have to watch them. It's called the before trilogy
- 2:10:52because there's 3 movies in the trilogy and they all have before
- 2:10:55in the title. So it stars Julie Delpy and
- 2:10:59Ethan Hawke when they, I've totally forgot that they did
- 2:11:02this, but he they particularly talk about Before Midnight,
- 2:11:05which is the last movie in the trilogy and it shows.
- 2:11:09It's the same couple at different phases in their life,
- 2:11:13at different stages in their relationship.
- 2:11:16And at this stage and before midnight, they're married and
- 2:11:20they're in their 40's. The female lead chose to cover
- 2:11:24this movie on his radio show for the ending scene, which is a big
- 2:11:31fight. And in this point in the show,
- 2:11:33they're fighting like they're they're on the House.
- 2:11:37Yeah, she says. For me, unlike the two main
- 2:11:40characters in Notting Hill or Pretty Woman, not because
- 2:11:43they're characters whom anyone would fall in love with, not
- 2:11:47because they're pretty, sexy, cool, nor because they're young,
- 2:11:51but just because it's you, just because it is that person, even
- 2:11:55if they are a little lacking, I'll tempered and old, they're
- 2:11:59loving relationship despite all that was very moving to me, just
- 2:12:04like the couple. And before midnight, they
- 2:12:06reconcile at the end of the movie and they reconcile at the
- 2:12:10end of the broadcast. And I thought that was a very
- 2:12:14like they the pull of the Before trilogy is so cool and
- 2:12:23significant to me because they've have characteristics of
- 2:12:28those two characters from the Before trilogy, Ethan Hawke's
- 2:12:32character and Julie Delby. They are like very witty and
- 2:12:37clever and well read intelligent people that are constantly
- 2:12:43butting heads intellectually and like having these teta tets and
- 2:12:48and verbal teta tets. It's this like bickering banter
- 2:12:52between them? Yeah.
- 2:12:54Quick dialogue, but they have this intense sexual chemistry
- 2:12:59and they love each other and they would do anything for each
- 2:13:02other and they'd just grow together.
- 2:13:04Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that is what this couple is.
- 2:13:08It it definitely is. So they go grocery shopping
- 2:13:12together in this episode as well, which is very significant.
- 2:13:14It's a very domestic chore. Only committed couples of
- 2:13:18married couples do this in Korea.
- 2:13:20So it's a very big deal. And she's so contrary.
- 2:13:24I just love that she's almost purposely difficult, like in
- 2:13:29this moment especially. She asks if he prefers seasoned
- 2:13:32soybeans or horseradish. Soybeans, he says seasoned.
- 2:13:35She puts the opposite in the cart.
- 2:13:37She asks apple juice or orange juice.
- 2:13:40He says apple juice she gets. She puts orange juice in the
- 2:13:42cart and says they can juice the apples they have at home and
- 2:13:45drink that. His face is so priceless.
- 2:13:48He's just like, like, Oh, my God, like, he's like, so annoyed
- 2:13:56but mildly entertained. And she kisses him in the aisle
- 2:14:00and there's couples all in the background.
- 2:14:02And it's just such a cool scene. Like, you're just like, Oh my
- 2:14:05God. Like they're going all the way.
- 2:14:07They've been talking all this time about, like, marriage.
- 2:14:10And they talk about babies in the next scene.
- 2:14:13He wants 3, she wants one. This was, I think, the moment
- 2:14:17where I, like, deviated from really liking him to, like,
- 2:14:20maybe not so much. And it's just my personal
- 2:14:22preference. She asked what his ideal wife
- 2:14:25would be, and he says his ideal wife would give birth every
- 2:14:29three years to a total of three children, spacing out the kids
- 2:14:33as one does every exactly every three years.
- 2:14:36And Yep, have dinner ready when he gets home.
- 2:14:39Just basically be a stay at home mom.
- 2:14:41And she laughs in his face. She's like, like.
- 2:14:45That's not me. Yeah, that's not me.
- 2:14:48Yeah, that's exactly what's happening.
- 2:14:50Not happening. And it's just like such a common
- 2:14:55thing that you hear Korean men want the stay at home mom or
- 2:15:00just that concept of women will quit their jobs when they get
- 2:15:05married, quit their jobs when they have children in Korea,
- 2:15:08which contributes to them just not getting paid as much in
- 2:15:12Korea and and the gender wage gap and all sorts of shit right
- 2:15:19in Korea. And she's over here.
- 2:15:22She is a highly educated professional.
- 2:15:25She's like, I've worked hard for my degree.
- 2:15:27She's like. I have speed debt and I'm not
- 2:15:30gonna give up my profession. I like worked hard.
- 2:15:36She's like, maybe I want one, if that.
- 2:15:41If that. She's just so real, like it's a
- 2:15:44tangible character. Anyway, moving forward, his
- 2:15:47hallucination gets stronger and stronger with Dio.
- 2:15:51It's revealed that neither brother, the male lead or the
- 2:15:54imprisoned brother killed the stepdad.
- 2:15:57He died of asphyxiation. So the mother who lit the fire
- 2:16:01that burned their house down is to blame.
- 2:16:04She's the one who actually killed the stepfather.
- 2:16:06The mother is under like disassociation.
- 2:16:09She's completely forgotten that she did this arson back in the
- 2:16:15day which ended up killing the dad.
- 2:16:17The fact, the way that the doctor put that together,
- 2:16:20though? Oh yeah, that the mirror thing.
- 2:16:24Yeah, I was just like, really? Really I was like, that's a
- 2:16:28threat I will let. You have it.
- 2:16:29Yeah, Yeah. I'll let you have it.
- 2:16:31There's been a lot of like non K dramatisms in this.
- 2:16:34We'll give you this K Dramatism. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:16:36We'll let you have it. We'll, we'll look the other way.
- 2:16:41So he proposes to her at the end of this episode.
- 2:16:45She's shocked, she's shocked. And I think at the beginning of
- 2:16:49episode 12, he basically tells her, like, put me into your life
- 2:16:53schedule. I've already put you into mine,
- 2:16:56which is a very nice concept because she's like, I have all
- 2:16:59these plans. I want to travel and go in
- 2:17:01sabbatical for a year and like, it's going to be very difficult
- 2:17:04to keep a hold of this relationship, yadda, yadda,
- 2:17:06yadda. And he's like, plan for me
- 2:17:08because I'm playing for you. Yeah.
- 2:17:10Yeah, yeah. Let's talk about the last three
- 2:17:12episodes. My God, where do you want to
- 2:17:14start, God? Where do you want to start?
- 2:17:17Well, but the fact that they, obviously the doctor and the
- 2:17:22friend find out and diagnose him and then, you know, the Sunbey
- 2:17:28and the friend find out and they have to bring it up to her and
- 2:17:33she's just in denial. Like for the first little bit
- 2:17:37she's in denial, but her mind starts clicking things together
- 2:17:43and they're like, he is becoming a danger to himself.
- 2:17:47Has he shown you know? And she starts.
- 2:17:50Regressive self harm behaviors. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:17:53He's she starts putting these together and being like, Oh my
- 2:17:56God, this is happening. And then that's when they sort
- 2:18:00of bring his mother in and they kind of tell her that they're
- 2:18:05going to have to have him committed.
- 2:18:08And it's like, that must have been tough on a female lead to
- 2:18:13have to say that to the mother and to be like, this needs to
- 2:18:17happen now. Maybe would have been better if
- 2:18:20an unrelated Dr. put that across to the mother as opposed to the
- 2:18:25girlfriend. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:18:26This whole thing of like conflict of interest, friends of
- 2:18:30his psychiatrist, friends of his are handling his care,
- 2:18:35diagnosing him, treating him, and his girlfriend is working in
- 2:18:39the same hospital in the same ward as him being treated.
- 2:18:44Not supposed to see him. Not supposed to see him.
- 2:18:47She's like breaking hospital rules.
- 2:18:49She does get disciplined, but it's like a slap on the wrist.
- 2:18:53Basically, yeah. It's like very unethical.
- 2:18:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. I will say that is one thing
- 2:19:03about this drama, but it is quite unethical in certain
- 2:19:07places. But maybe, you know, 10 week,
- 2:19:09this is where you have to give it a bit of grace and be like,
- 2:19:13this was 10 years ago. It's AK drama.
- 2:19:17It's AK drama, yeah. You got to give it a bit of
- 2:19:21grace. Yeah, exactly.
- 2:19:23So, So for me then episode 14 is like one of the episodes that I
- 2:19:28have quite a lot of notes because a lot happens in episode
- 2:19:3214 because like, it's, it's the scene basically where he gets
- 2:19:38into a car accident and he's seeing oh God, dying.
- 2:19:46So that's, and I'm like sobbing, absolutely sobbing because
- 2:19:51nobody sees it. But to him, that is his reality.
- 2:19:55Yeah, that is what's happening. And he's begging everybody
- 2:20:00around him to save DO he's like, I'm trying to just save him.
- 2:20:04Just sit. And he's begging our female
- 2:20:06lead, and our female lead is just like holding on to him for
- 2:20:10dear life at this point. And it's just like, Oh my God,
- 2:20:16Oh my God. And I'm like sobbing, absolutely
- 2:20:20sobbing throughout that. The acting in this scene, Oh my
- 2:20:24God, phenomenal. Oh my God, phenomenal.
- 2:20:27Not only from our main couple, but everybody around him and
- 2:20:31from DO like this is his first role.
- 2:20:35And I'm like. DoD throughout the show is just
- 2:20:40devastating. He is, he is, He's so.
- 2:20:43Good, he's. So good.
- 2:20:46This is his first acting role. I would have never guessed.
- 2:20:51No, I wouldn't either. I wouldn't either.
- 2:20:53I would have thought he came from the Juilliard School of
- 2:20:56yadda yadda yadda because he is that good.
- 2:21:00It's crazy. It's crazy.
- 2:21:02And then obviously. Unassailable.
- 2:21:05It's, it's, it's wild. And then our male lead gets put
- 2:21:09into care, he gets admitted. And like one of the lines that I
- 2:21:13have is him, you just see the shift because obviously he's on
- 2:21:19all of these medications and he's just like vacant.
- 2:21:22He's not there. Like he's not there.
- 2:21:25And the acting for this is insane.
- 2:21:30Insane because up to this point, we've seen this almost larger
- 2:21:35than life character. We've seen this very funny
- 2:21:39character, this. And this is the point.
- 2:21:43Yeah. This is the point.
- 2:21:44You realize, Oh, my God, A lot of it was an act, a persona that
- 2:21:50he put out to the world so that he would, you know, keep people
- 2:21:55away. And I, and even then he says it,
- 2:22:00he says it to a female lead. She isn't supposed to visit him,
- 2:22:04but she does. And he says to her, I'm not like
- 2:22:09myself in here of seeing Gong Wu is a disease.
- 2:22:12I'll cure it myself. And it's just like, Oh, no.
- 2:22:18Oh my God, Gong. Wu is like his safety blanket.
- 2:22:23That is his safety blanket and he it's like taking that away
- 2:22:27from somebody. It is.
- 2:22:29It must be. Because he needs him.
- 2:22:32He needs him. He needs him.
- 2:22:33And it's just like you get to the point where he's just like,
- 2:22:36I don't know what's real. I don't know.
- 2:22:38Like I can't. I can't imagine.
- 2:22:43I can't. That's something that I can't
- 2:22:45imagine. You know myself, I've never been
- 2:22:50through that. And I think it's one of those
- 2:22:52things where unless you've been through a situation like that,
- 2:22:55yes, we can try to empathize with the character, but we're
- 2:22:59not going to know what it's truly like.
- 2:23:03To the point where he is a broken man.
- 2:23:06He is vacant, he's almost not there.
- 2:23:08And he is even saying to this girlfriend that he wanted to
- 2:23:12marry. I don't know if you're real.
- 2:23:14I don't know what's real. I'm not me.
- 2:23:16I don't know like. What's?
- 2:23:18Happening anymore, I don't feel like myself.
- 2:23:21And it takes courage on her part to step away and be like, but
- 2:23:27this is what's best for you. Like I can't this me not doing
- 2:23:32anything is me helping you. I can't get you out of here.
- 2:23:36And it's just like, it is such beautifully well written.
- 2:23:42It is angsty. It is this, you know, gut
- 2:23:44wrenching, like you're saying. It's just so well acted because
- 2:23:48you have these two broken people.
- 2:23:52And it's she becomes almost his reason in a sense to kind of,
- 2:23:58you know, hold on. And I don't know, I it's just so
- 2:24:02well written. It's just so well written, so
- 2:24:05well acted. Her family demands that she
- 2:24:08break up with him. Oh.
- 2:24:10My God yes I wrote down because I was like I can see on this
- 2:24:15watch coming from. I completely understood the
- 2:24:18family. I understood it like I didn't.
- 2:24:22I didn't agree with them, but I understood them.
- 2:24:25That's my point. Because like to especially to
- 2:24:29her mother, her mother is a constant caregiver.
- 2:24:34She doesn't want her daughter to be in that situation.
- 2:24:38And although it's very different situations, like there is no
- 2:24:42cure for her father, for him with the right medication and
- 2:24:46the right observations. He can have a good quality of
- 2:24:50life. Exactly.
- 2:24:51So it's very different for her mother.
- 2:24:56All she can see is this tag of disability of this tag of her
- 2:25:01daughter, this stigma that her daughter is going to have to
- 2:25:04care for her partner, that her daughter is going to have to
- 2:25:08give more of herself then she's going to get back.
- 2:25:12And that's probably all the mother can see.
- 2:25:15So actually when I first watched it, I was so angry at the at it.
- 2:25:19I was so angry at the mother, but a little bit like as I was
- 2:25:23sitting on it and I was, you know, thinking through it, I was
- 2:25:28like, actually, I don't agree with the actions, but I
- 2:25:31understand the actions. I understand where they're
- 2:25:34coming from. So.
- 2:25:36So yeah. I don't think I, I don't agree
- 2:25:38and I don't, I don't think it was right for her to slap her
- 2:25:42and like get lay hands on her and stuff like that.
- 2:25:45But I understand where it was coming from and what she said.
- 2:25:48And at one point she even says, do you know what it's like to
- 2:25:51live with a patient? And like that says it all.
- 2:25:53Like that is the crux of the issue is that she would be not
- 2:25:58living with a partner, living with a patient.
- 2:26:01Something else that was added, which I did not like this
- 2:26:04character. I thought this was the worst
- 2:26:06written character of the show, especially when everybody else
- 2:26:08is so well written. The sister.
- 2:26:11Oh. I didn't like.
- 2:26:12Her she added nothing, added nothing they could have.
- 2:26:15Written out. Yeah, she was not necessary.
- 2:26:17Yeah, she was not necessary. She says this juicy ass bit in
- 2:26:21this episode. She says because she quits her
- 2:26:23job at the cafe, which I guess she felt obligated to do because
- 2:26:27that's homeboys building and technically his his cafe.
- 2:26:31She comes in and like glares at the female lead and says that
- 2:26:35she went to Community College because of her because the
- 2:26:39sister, like the female lead, went to medical school.
- 2:26:42Yeah, but she worked her ass off to get there.
- 2:26:46But the family could only afford to send one of the daughters to
- 2:26:51a very expensive or prestigious school.
- 2:26:55So there's a lot of resentment and bitterness there.
- 2:26:57And we never unpacked that at all in the show or even hinted
- 2:27:02that that was there until this one moment.
- 2:27:06And I was like, oh, that didn't like that.
- 2:27:09But that was juicy. Earlier in this episode, the
- 2:27:13brother, the imprisoned brother that I think by now is out,
- 2:27:17tells the Sunday doc to unleash the truth of the whole situation
- 2:27:22on his disassociated mom, on the mother.
- 2:27:27But the doc someday says no, you should do it yourself.
- 2:27:32I. Didn't understand that the.
- 2:27:34This is what he said. Like basically he was saying
- 2:27:37you're so abrasive and basically you could just torture her with
- 2:27:41the truth until she remembers the quote is there's no medical
- 2:27:45basis. But who knows, Like maybe it'll
- 2:27:47work. And I was like, what?
- 2:27:51What do you mean what? Do you mean torture the poor
- 2:27:55woman with the truth until she like, has a breakthrough?
- 2:27:59Are you? Joking.
- 2:28:01Oh, you break her and she has a breakdown.
- 2:28:04Yeah, like I was like, that's just wrong.
- 2:28:06So I feel like they gave the Sombe doc like the most
- 2:28:09questionable like medical practice things in the whole
- 2:28:15show. I have the quote from when she
- 2:28:18goes to see the female lead goes to see him.
- 2:28:21This is against ethical standards, against his plan of
- 2:28:24care, against hospital regulation.
- 2:28:26She's not supposed to see him. And she goes in and they're
- 2:28:30having this conversation. It's just like you said, he's
- 2:28:32like really vacant. He's low energy and he looks
- 2:28:37bad. And he says words won't come to
- 2:28:41me that well. It's hard to walk to.
- 2:28:43I want to see you but suddenly get sleepy even now seeing you
- 2:28:48in a while. I want to make you laugh, but I
- 2:28:50don't know how to make you laugh.
- 2:28:52I can't think of any words. I want to hug you but I don't
- 2:28:56think I can. I'm not sexy, huh?
- 2:28:59And I started crying. Broken I was.
- 2:29:02So I started crying, sobbing. I was, I lost it because he
- 2:29:07said. Being here, I feel so small.
- 2:29:09Jess, when I tell you I started crying in episode 13 and I did
- 2:29:15not stop crying until episode 16, I was just like sobbing the
- 2:29:21whole way through those last episodes, completely sobbing.
- 2:29:26It was so much. It was so so much very high
- 2:29:31intensity emotions the last few episodes and thankfully like we
- 2:29:36do get a happy ending. We do we.
- 2:29:39Do we do like there's like several time jumps, I think in
- 2:29:43the last episode. She does go on sabbatical and
- 2:29:47travel while he gets treatment. He's in and out of treatment.
- 2:29:51He does make a comeback. Oh my God, that scene episode
- 2:29:5515, I I have to talk about it. I have to talk about it in where
- 2:30:01he no. The goodbye to Dio.
- 2:30:04Yeah, but just before that he finally clicked that Dio's
- 2:30:10character is not real. Right, because she tells him.
- 2:30:13She tells him to find the contradiction in the illusion in
- 2:30:16order to break it. She's like, there's always
- 2:30:19something wrong. Yeah.
- 2:30:21About it, about the hallucination.
- 2:30:24And it's not the doctors that can find it, it's only you.
- 2:30:28It's him, yeah. Yeah.
- 2:30:30And it's the fact that he's been the same age and the same, yeah,
- 2:30:34school kid for three years. Or it was so awful.
- 2:30:39He's like, what year? He asked EO, what year are you
- 2:30:43in? In high school?
- 2:30:44He's like, oh, I'm in second year and he's like, how long
- 2:30:47have we known each other? He's like three years.
- 2:30:50Don't don't like. It's just.
- 2:30:51Such a moment and everything starts coming back, yeah.
- 2:30:56And then he starts noticing all the wrong things that he didn't
- 2:31:00see or didn't realize before. And he gets admitted again.
- 2:31:04And then he washes his feet and he brings out some trainers.
- 2:31:10And I think I just have this. And I wrote it down because in
- 2:31:14episode 16, he says, so Dio's character says, shouldn't I come
- 2:31:18anymore? And he says, my girlfriend said
- 2:31:21to say thank you, that if I hadn't met you, I probably
- 2:31:24wouldn't have survived the guilt.
- 2:31:26I was actually comforting me as I was comforting you.
- 2:31:30Thank you for everything, Guanggu.
- 2:31:31I realized after I met you, even though I act tough, the assaults
- 2:31:36from my stepfather and brother were really scary.
- 2:31:39I really hated how weak I was for not being able to do
- 2:31:42anything while my mom was being beaten.
- 2:31:45When I was running away barefoot, even though I wasn't
- 2:31:49crying, I was really scared. It's all in the past now, right?
- 2:31:53I think I've become quite a decent adult now.
- 2:31:56And then he goes, I'm leaving and I'm like.
- 2:31:59Zombing And he's like, even Dio says like even if you see me
- 2:32:03again, like don't acknowledge me.
- 2:32:06Yeah, just ignore me. Just ignore me.
- 2:32:10I can't. I can't.
- 2:32:11I can't. And I'm like, I'm tearing up.
- 2:32:13Just it's always about it. I know it's always been a
- 2:32:17facsimile of himself, right? A mirror image of his younger
- 2:32:22self. And so it's like it's, it's a
- 2:32:23part of him. It's just so layered and deep.
- 2:32:30It's I, yeah. You know, healing your inner
- 2:32:33child kind of thing. And yeah.
- 2:32:37And. Not that all schizophrenic
- 2:32:38patients have such a, like, inner child hallucination that
- 2:32:44they need to say goodbye to and make peace with, but like, in
- 2:32:47this specific K drama case, that's what was happening, Yeah.
- 2:32:53And actually, I think watching it, so I'm just going to mention
- 2:32:57this because I, I thought it was quite interesting.
- 2:33:00Daily Dose of Sunshine has a schizophrenic story in it.
- 2:33:05And they say it's really stigmatized in South Korea to
- 2:33:10the point where they won't like rent to people houses and stuff
- 2:33:15if they know that this is schizophrenic and whatnot.
- 2:33:19And like having watched that in Daily Dose of Sunshine and then
- 2:33:23seeing it, you know, in this drama 10 years ago, it was
- 2:33:27really like impactful. And I think that's what kind of
- 2:33:31made me click even more with the mother situation as well.
- 2:33:35And I was like, the way that they did it here, it really
- 2:33:39worked. It really really worked.
- 2:33:42I think that we have to say one last thing about the twist is
- 2:33:46the significance is also in the fact that Choin Song, this
- 2:33:49household name, this Hot K drama actor has a mental illness like
- 2:33:56he, he is suffering from a very serious schizophrenia, a very
- 2:34:02stigmatized illness in Korea that a lot of people don't even
- 2:34:06a 10 years ago, let alone today, don't even know the symptoms,
- 2:34:09don't even know like what that is, how to treat it, yadda yadda
- 2:34:13yadda. To see him of all people be the
- 2:34:17vehicle for this story, I think is brilliant.
- 2:34:22Like, that's part of the brilliance of the show.
- 2:34:24Yeah. Is that he's the one that told
- 2:34:27the story like through him is is how people are learning about
- 2:34:30this? Yeah, and it's heart wrenching.
- 2:34:33And it's heartbreaking. It's good shit.
- 2:34:35It's good drama as well. Yeah, so.
- 2:34:37Good. It's so good, it's so good.
- 2:34:39We got through the end of the show.
- 2:34:41I'll as we said, it's a happy ending.
- 2:34:43I don't know if we want to go like going to do that.
- 2:34:44She they get married, she gets pregnant, and they're still
- 2:34:47living in the house with the housemates.
- 2:34:49I will say, I will say I really enjoyed.
- 2:34:52That's just like my last little thing.
- 2:34:54I really, really enjoyed the fact that coming out on the
- 2:34:58other side, she still went and did what she was supposed to do.
- 2:35:01She didn't stop herself because she was meant to go abroad to do
- 2:35:06some medical thing. You know she's going to work
- 2:35:09abroad or something. She's going to answer that.
- 2:35:11Yeah, yeah. And he's like, that's fine.
- 2:35:13You go do you? We can still be, you know, we'll
- 2:35:17work on each other. And it's like it's beautiful
- 2:35:19that they went away. They worked on each other and
- 2:35:22they came back even stronger than before.
- 2:35:24And I'm like, I this is brilliant writing because like.
- 2:35:28It's a time jump done correctly. Exactly.
- 2:35:32That's exactly what I thought. It's not a time jump for time
- 2:35:35jump's. Sake.
- 2:35:36Exactly. It's not a breakup.
- 2:35:38They don't break up for breakup's sake.
- 2:35:41It's not, it's not even that. It's just that they go away.
- 2:35:44They work on each other, you know, they work on themselves.
- 2:35:47They have the goals that they like.
- 2:35:49He needs to get better and like she can't even be that.
- 2:35:52She's she's not allowed to be there like ethically and like
- 2:35:57for a plethora of reasons, she really can't help him in this
- 2:36:00journey. And she is his goal and her
- 2:36:04goals were already there from the get go.
- 2:36:06Like she wanted to travel, she wanted to be free, she wanted to
- 2:36:09go on sabbatical and she always wanted that.
- 2:36:12So like they do that. Yeah, this is her showing, for
- 2:36:15example, her mother that she can still have her life and she can
- 2:36:19still be herself and she can still be in the relationship as
- 2:36:23well. It's like it's it's just so well
- 2:36:26done. This is a strong female lead.
- 2:36:30Well written. Like this is what I mean when I
- 2:36:33say I like strong female leads. It's the fact that the woman can
- 2:36:39have it all. She can have the relationship
- 2:36:41and she can have the career and she can do what men do.
- 2:36:46It's just like, I don't even know what else to say.
- 2:36:50I just, I loved it. I really did.
- 2:36:52This warms my heart if you have gotten this far in the episode
- 2:36:56Which. Is a really?
