- 1:00Thank you so much for all your support. Today's episode is the Adventure
- 1:04of the Count Trafauno's Chest The Adventures of Frank Race, starring Paul Dubove with
- 1:11Tony Barrett as Mark Dunovan. The War changed many things, the face of
- 1:25the Earth and the people on it. Before the war, Frank Race worked
- 1:29as an attorney, but he traded his law books for the Cloak and Dagger
- 1:33of the Oss. When it was over, his former life was over too.
- 1:37Adventure had become his business, The Adventures of Frank Race. Now we
- 1:57joined Frank Race for the Adventure of the Count. Found oh Cress, Los
- 2:07Angeles after sundown, a sleepy city like a giant cat, warm and content,
- 2:14denying its spectacular reputation. Mark was out on the town and I was
- 2:19sitting in our hotel room reading a newspaper account of a case we had just
- 2:22cleaned up. As my eyes came to the bottom of the column, I
- 2:25glanced down at the floor and suddenly noticed that I either had four feet or
- 2:30company. Here's the other pair of shoes on the floor, where several sizes
- 2:34smaller than my modest tens. I dropped the paper and looked up about five
- 2:38feet up. He was dressed in a color scheme that might have come from
- 2:42a painting by Sasan, And had I been a drinking man, I might
- 2:46have taken the pledge. He's Detective Race. The name is Race, but
- 2:51I'm not a detective. What can I do for you? My boss is
- 2:54disappeared. I am sure for you mean he left time without paying you?
- 2:59No? Do you also disappeared? You're fine? Why come to me?
- 3:04This is a case for the police. No, no, no police,
- 3:07VIVENTI said, no police. Who is VIVENTI is mean? Oh? Well,
- 3:13that explains everything except why no police. VIVENTI is on paroled from prison
- 3:19one moment, Oh, I see it, which means that you'd be yanked
- 3:23as a parole violator if the police thought you were hooked up with a disappearance.
- 3:27You find the boss, i'd pay. I don't want your money.
- 3:31What kind of a rapper your jail don the one you've been paroled for white
- 3:38in crupty with a fellow who thought you through too many seven? Oh no,
- 3:43what's reverence that night? What was his own dice? Ever? Have
- 3:49any trouble with your boss? Yes, VIVENTI want to go home, back
- 3:53to Island's Lusanne went. Parole is over. It's why mister Templeton is mad.
- 4:00When I tell him is soon goodbye, he blew his top. Oh
- 4:04you'll say, miss the Templeton, say he called Paris and tell him I
- 4:09squeeze oil and Gazarine builds for to steal money. When did you see Templeton?
- 4:15Last two nights ago? I drive him home and put car away.
- 4:18I go to apartment Yesterday is no answer. No I called on Terrapont Today
- 4:24is no no, no answer. I go to apartment again Tonight is no
- 4:29answer. He's disappear. It's maybe dead. We better get into that apartment
- 4:33and have a look. You'll see, Detective Racer, he's gone. We
- 4:46might get a line on where he's going. Low you're familiar with his dress.
- 4:49Check the bedroom closets and see if he took any clothing with him.
- 4:53I looked through this desk. Oh, he's cool. I the contents of
- 4:59Templeton's dea gave no clue to his whereabouts, but the search wasn't boring.
- 5:02There were a dozen bank books held together by a rubber band, all showing
- 5:05sizeable balances. In another drawer, also bound by a rubber band, was
- 5:10a stack of pawn tickets, again for a sizeable sums. In the same
- 5:14drawer was a ledger and a list of money transactions with pawn shops in major
- 5:17cities all over the country. But it was in a little metal filing box
- 5:21that I hit the jackpot. A batch of precious stones in various settings.
- 5:26They looked like the Bavarian crown jewels. I spilled them out on the desks.
- 5:30Vevetti came back into the room. Exchange mind, Detective Race, Yeah,
- 5:33what about you forget case, mister Temperton Joe's go away vacation. You've
- 5:40got the jeers, vevettic what did you find? An? Oh? I
- 5:43think I'll take a look now. The bedroom was just as it had them
- 5:48at first. Plans a portrait of Jonathan Templeton on the wall dominating the room.
- 5:53But now the closets were open. Staring at me from one of them,
- 5:56but not seeing me, was the face that had posed for the portrait.
- 6:00Jonathan Templeton had been strangled by a brightly colored necktie. I turned back
- 6:04to eventy just in time to see an iron paperway do things to my conscious
- 6:08mind. When I came to dawn, like my head was breaking, I
- 6:21made an anonymous call the police, tipping them off about the body, and
- 6:25then I stuffed the jewelry and the porn tickets into my pocket for future reference.
- 6:29I was about to leave the apartment when the phone rang. I answered
- 6:31it, Hello, this is long bye. Get that ring back here and
- 6:36get it back fast unless you want trouble. Which ring? And where shall
- 6:40I bring it? Don't stall? You know which? Who is it?
- 6:45A friend? Just a friend? Who is it? Hello? Hello?
- 6:51A man named Lombard and he wanted a ring. It was something to remember.
- 6:56I stepped through the door out into the hall, just in time to
- 6:58bump into a female who i'd have stepped out of a drawing by Varga.
- 7:02Oh excuse me, I didn't see you, not hurt. I was coming
- 7:08in to see you, so I noticed with a skeleton key in your hand.
- 7:12You give me a little choice. I must have that ring you promised.
- 7:16I have paid you all I can. Oh, I know the ring
- 7:18is yours sight you torture me. You know the crest it belongs to Count
- 7:23Rafano. I must have the ring. When he returned, my must Blumbard
- 7:27wants the ring too. What am I bid? My final and monogram?
- 7:34What will they think of next one? I've got bad news for you,
- 7:38ducky. I'm not Jonathan Templeton. Then where is he? Well that depends
- 7:42on the kind of life he lived, because he's dead. And those sirens
- 7:46me and the police are coming to find out why I'm getting lost, and
- 7:47humbly suggests you do the same. Wow. Well, well, the wondering
- 8:01boy comes home, and where have you been out out? He says,
- 8:05I've been looking for you all night. You was a guy which was going
- 8:09up oily, and now you tell me you went off and had a ball
- 8:13out by you and I set out. I met out cold. Somebody caressed
- 8:16me with a paperweight, although I can't understand why he ran off and let
- 8:20these behind. Oh hey, look you didn't go over here trolley and knock
- 8:28go over the jewelry's doing no, But somewhere in this stuff is the clue
- 8:33to a man's murder. Come on, that's go Come on, where down
- 8:35to the police robbery detailor check on these things they've probably stolen. We can
- 8:39locate the owners through insurance pictures and seculars. The police check turned out to
- 8:50be a blind alley, not one of the pieces showed up on the list
- 8:52of missing jewelry. I took out a batch of pawn tickets I'd lifted from
- 8:56Templand's desk mark and I made the rounds of the three goal ball establishments.
- 9:01The answers were all the same. In each case, a man answering Templeton's
- 9:05description had pawned a valuable piece of jewelry. The handwriting on the pledges match
- 9:09too, but he used a different name each time. We continued our march
- 9:13down Spring Street. Is it not a point shop Millers? What did he
- 9:20drop in here? That's funny. Why there aren't any tickets for Millers yet.
- 9:26He hasn't missed any of the other shops on Spring Street up to this
- 9:28point, and there are tickets for places further up the street. So,
- 9:31so I've got a hunch. Give me a wrist watch, mark my writing
- 9:37upon it. I left my watch back at the hotel. Well, how
- 9:41convenient for you. Someone, come on mark us give I'll put it on
- 9:46and go in there. Here. You take the tickets and check the rest
- 9:50of the pawn shops. I'll make you back at the hotel. Yeah,
- 9:52everything happens. To see you later. Oh, I do you I'd like
- 10:00to get ten dollars on this risk watch. I'll take it off. Yeah,
- 10:07nice watch, it's not yours. What did you do taking a crystal
- 10:11ball on a pledge? No? No, you had it fastened through the
- 10:13second hole in the watch band. But there are signs of wear and a
- 10:16band near the fourth hole. Person who wears this watch as a smaller risk,
- 10:20Maybe we ought to trade places and this business. One must be an
- 10:24observative human beings in a student of human nature. In your studies of human
- 10:28nature? Have you ever come across a specimen named Jonathan Templeton? Yes?
- 10:33Is I know Jonathan Templeton by other names? He plagues many point group takes
- 10:37them how by borrowing large sums of money. I'm worthless clatter maybe I'll have
- 10:41some samples of his merchandise. Take a look at these, did you get
- 10:43that's not important? Are they worth anything? Well? No, settings are
- 10:50golden platinum, but the stones, they are mostly white zircons. Zirkon is
- 10:54only a semi precious stone. Well, how about this ring the royal crest
- 10:58of the Trafano family with large diamond, also a zircon worth perhaps one hundred
- 11:03dollars, and many pawnbrokers might give a thousand on it. Are you kidding?
- 11:09No, they are only businessmen, not jewelers. Most of them are
- 11:11not students of real values. Only one who knows jewelry well can tell a
- 11:16flawless white zircon from the diamond. Ray would certainly fool me, but that's
- 11:20why it could also fool a pawnbroker. And if the pledge is not redeemed,
- 11:22the pawnbroker is stuck with it when it's a paced for sae, that's
- 11:26right. The more ethical pawnbrokers take their loss and try to be more careful.
- 11:31But there are others who try to get even by passing the carrial row
- 11:33off on another broken And that's where a man like temple And gets into the
- 11:37act. The broker gets stuck, hires him to stick some other broker.
- 11:39Yes, for a very large commission. Did Templeton ever work for you?
- 11:45He's never passed anything here. According to the tickets, I know fine things.
- 11:48He could not fool me. Well, can you think of any broker
- 11:52in town he might have worked for. Perhaps there are others for whom you
- 11:56have no tickets, like Charles Lombard. Lombard a pawnbroker in Lombard on South
- 12:01Hill Street. Can I help you? Are you Lombardy? I'm a private
- 12:18investigator. I'm trying to locate some merchandise stolen from a client of mine about
- 12:22a year ago. I don't take in stolen stuff. I didn't say you
- 12:26did. I just want to look through your back files. Something wrong?
- 12:31You're a boye. I've heard it before. I was on a radio quiz
- 12:35program a few days ago. Yeah, maybe that's it. What do you
- 12:39want to see your files from seven or eight months ago? Unclaimed stuff is
- 12:43so if it isn't redeemed in six months, I know, I guess it's
- 12:48all right. The files are in the cage here. I'll show you if
- 12:54the crest ring had come from Lombards and had been passed the Templeton. I
- 12:58wanted to know who had it off originally and why Lombard wanted it back.
- 13:03I rifled through the file and there it was. It had been pledged by
- 13:07a woman, Marie and Nieman, and there were initials matched the m N
- 13:11monogram of the twenty two that had been jabbed in my ribs outside of the
- 13:13Templeton's apartment. I prepped a few questions to shoot at Lombard, but just
- 13:16then another man came in. Lombard Templetons that take an easy craft. Oh,
- 13:24and he news I knew something was wrong. Call again about the ring,
- 13:28that we'd be there by Then Marie went up herself. It was too
- 13:31late. Did you get a chance to look around? No, somebody was
- 13:33coming out of the apartment. Must have been the same man who entered the
- 13:37phone when I called. She said. He was big, about six feet.
- 13:39He was wearing so I was hidden from him by the grill of the
- 13:43cage, but he started to describe me like a police bulletin. It was
- 13:46time to let the sun set on the little island of precious palm trinkets.
- 13:50I came out of the cage and headed for the door fast, so long
- 13:52and thanks fine, what you wanted? Hey, he's and I managed to
- 14:00du bombard him. A man named Kraton made the door. As I stepped
- 14:03into the street to pacon. Marie and Eva staid into mine from a car
- 14:05parked at the curb. Then all of a sudden she had three eyes,
- 14:07and one of them was the muscle of that twenty two. I yelled,
- 14:11stopped beet and started actor and Anna was running for a trolley. It served
- 14:13its purpose. A crowd fell in behind me, blocking her aim, and
- 14:16I beat the man. I was chastened to the tulley by a good five
- 14:18yards. We'll return to the adventures of Frank Race. It just about one
- 14:28minute. Now back to the Adventures of Frank Race. It was one of
- 14:43those rough days. Getting hit on the head and shot at had turned the
- 14:48case of Jonathan Templeton from a matter of idle curiosity to a matter of personal
- 14:52interest. I wanted to have another little chat with Venti, who left me
- 14:56speechless in his boss's apartment. So at ten o'clock that night, I satched
- 15:01into the Rendezvous Ballroom, a dime a dance joint where many of the Venti's
- 15:03compatriots spend their evenings and their money worshiping the biggest blond Amazon since the gold
- 15:09Rush. The orchestra was in a break and only the pianist was left beating
- 15:13out a dreamy improvisation. I spotted my quarry in a dim corner of the
- 15:18hall near a fire escape. Friend Vivetti was cradled in the arms of one
- 15:22of said Amazons, who was gently rocking his dream ball. Oh honey,
- 15:28want to dance? Talk? No thanks and all counts a big shot.
- 15:35Hello Avetti, Come on, junior, show your face please, so you
- 15:39going, bob, don't bother my customer. Here's a fistful of tickets,
- 15:45baby, your partner and I want to sit this one out on the fire
- 15:48escape. Whoa, thanks? Oh are you fine? Vivent Field, It's
- 15:52a gift. Come on, Romeo out on the balcony there anything about a
- 16:00poem worker named Lambard and Parrell Street of Eddy Oh PSA. Sometimes go there
- 16:04to pick up prittle package just for mister Templeton. Ever, Tamplin mentioned a
- 16:08man named Contrafano. I'bout a man named Crapped. It's compulsa, mister Tampata.
- 16:17Sometimes I drive him in car once with his girl name of Maria.
- 16:22I read them out on corn on you rombad bones up? When was there
- 16:26about seven or eight months ago? Oh yeah, it was a spring.
- 16:30He's good. Maybe it helps I look for me. You better call your
- 16:34parole officer and turn yourself in until I clear this up. Oh no,
- 16:37no, no wait, A man that is bad fine who killed Templeton?
- 16:44A goodbye for he is this box? Don't shoot? Caught me in the
- 16:48shin and I jack knife while he went down the ladder into the street.
- 16:52Try following a man down the ladder when you have only one working leg,
- 16:55if you can do what you're as sinised to make the fire department. I
- 17:00tried to figure my next move, and it was hours before a germ of
- 17:03intelligence bought its way into my brain. I was trying to do the chasing.
- 17:07When I had possession of the ring. I went back to my hotel,
- 17:11turned on all the lights and waited for them to come to meat.
- 17:15I didn't wait long. Come in, mister Boyce. Don't reach for the
- 17:23artillery in your press, Maria. I happen to have a gun this time
- 17:26myself. When I shot that, I didn't know that you were a private
- 17:30investigation no, you thought I was a clay pigeon. I can't help what
- 17:34you think. I will pay you well if you will return the ring you
- 17:38have, the one with the Trofano Chris, how much five hundred dollars?
- 17:44It isn't worth any more than one hundred bucks. I know. I don't
- 17:47care about the actual value. I must have the ring by tomorrow morn.
- 17:49What's so important about it? The count may be here tomorrow wo to be
- 17:53married. Nails and I grabbed it. Then she tried to get it at
- 18:00twenty two. Again. I don't want to argue with ladies when they're onto
- 18:03the teeth, so I put it to sleepy by just as Mark came into
- 18:07the room. What what what what? What? I will be your horse's
- 18:11neck. Brought it at Caveman stuff went out with high button shoes. Grace,
- 18:15you cannot go around slug and Thames. And it would be more observant
- 18:19Mark. You'd note that the lady is toting a gun gold plated. It's
- 18:22true, but deadly m that I think would almost make dying leasure. Give
- 18:33me, give her some water, then show her out. I'm going to
- 18:36call on another lady. What it's almost three, I am just about the
- 18:40time this particular lady will be having a nightcap in the small private room of
- 18:44Chico's nightclub out on the Strip. What is the the name of Sissy Waterfield?
- 18:48She writes the best Society colum in Los Angeles. I've got to find
- 18:52out a few things about a man named Contrafano. Sissy Waterfield wasn't hard to
- 19:03find it, che goes. There was the usual crowd of mails surrounding her.
- 19:06I took a seat at the corner table and waited until she saw me.
- 19:10She pushed her way through the team and came over, the beauty of
- 19:12her blending with the soft beat of the piano. Why the pot, honey,
- 19:18I've read in the papers you were in town, but you didn't call.
- 19:22Papers also told where I was staying. You didn't call me. I
- 19:26thought of it, good girl, But you're a difficult man sometimes. I
- 19:30learned that on my last trip to New York. You were getting serious,
- 19:33Sissy. I didn't become you, not with that plague girl of the side.
- 19:37Leave Sissy, Oh, Jerry Darling, I've just found an old friend.
- 19:41Why didn't you run along? How will you get home? BIS will
- 19:45take me? Yes, call me tomorrow, Jerry Bird. Oh, he
- 19:51didn't like that. I'm a beast. I wouldn't have done it for anyone,
- 19:55but you. You know I believe you, don't you. I need
- 19:59some help, Sissy, anything you want, Just ask what do you know
- 20:03about Contrafano? I wrote a column about him just a couple of weeks ago.
- 20:07Is a dear, a scoundal, but charming. We were engaged once,
- 20:12well, I didn't know. That didn't last long. It went back
- 20:15to Europe a year ago, some sort of court trial. His family estates
- 20:18had been seized just before the war. And the poor darling was broke a
- 20:22year ago. But you said you did a column on him. Just recently.
- 20:26I did his case. We dragged through the courts, was just settled.
- 20:30He got his estate back, a castle on the Riviera, the works.
- 20:33So he's coming back to America. He said some ridiculous thing in an
- 20:36interview over there, something about coming back to the woman he loves. Know
- 20:40who the woman is with him? It's hard to tell. The competition was
- 20:44heavy that he yes, plenty good because I don't want to talk anymore.
- 20:49Take me home, dying. I took Sissy home. I helped to wind
- 21:00the cat and put the clock out. We made some confetti in case we
- 21:03should ever go to the Marti Gras. Then I kissed a goodbye and headed
- 21:07for downtown Los Angeles. I got there just in time to see Lombard open
- 21:11his pawn shop for the day. I waited in the street for a minute
- 21:14or two, then I followed him. I'd got Lambart to get one of
- 21:21his arms behind his back, end them to the mat, and sat on
- 21:23him. After we'd had a little check. I'm warning you, I'll call
- 21:27a plea. You're an opposition to call anybody legally or physically. Now,
- 21:32what goes with that ring? Or do I have to break your arms?
- 21:36The girl ponder? She didn't come back for it in the six month period,
- 21:40so I tried to sell it, and then you found out it was
- 21:41a piece of junks. So you gave it to Templeton to unload. Yeah,
- 21:45But then all of a sudden she came back with the ring. I
- 21:48called Templeton, but he wouldn't give it back. He wanted to keep it.
- 21:51Did she know that? I told her? Her boyfriend Harry Kraft knew
- 21:56Templeton, and he went to him, but he wouldn't give it up.
- 21:57He'd blackmailed the girl. I don't know why were you so hot on getting
- 22:02the ring back. I wanted to give the ring back to the proper owner
- 22:04since she won. Well, that sounds honest to ethical. Now one more
- 22:07thing. Where does the girl live? Why? So you can buy the
- 22:14Region Arms. It's better. Thanks, I'll be seeing you. My visit
- 22:26to the Region Arms was brief. Nobody was home, so I whiled away
- 22:30the time by opening and closing drawers. There were several blackmail notes from Templeton
- 22:34to Maria and Neeman, and a bunch of torrid love letters from Harry Kraft
- 22:37to Maria. Another item of interest was an unused marriage license just two weeks
- 22:41old, made out to Maria and Neeman and Harry Kraft. That was what
- 22:45I was looking for. I called Mark at the hotel and told him to
- 22:48meet me at Craft's house. I got there first, back your cabinet.
- 22:56Oh, it's you going someplace? Craft? Better then? I think so
- 23:00too, mister Race. I know it's a little late, but I want
- 23:07to apologize for all the trouble with cost. Just give it. You'll mean
- 23:11that. Sure. Your girlfriend offered me five hundred dollars for this ring.
- 23:15I've decided to sell. Well, what's the matter? No take us?
- 23:19Well, you see Maria wanted to ring back for sentimental reasons, But but
- 23:25no, I don't. Harry and I have become very close in the past
- 23:30week or so, and you've decided that he is your own true love,
- 23:33right. I guess you could call it that. Old friends for a long
- 23:37time and then all of a sudden in a week love, I guess that's
- 23:40the weird is race polish? Though it may seem foolish, it so undelievable.
- 23:45What do you mean? Well, your intuition must be strong because you
- 23:48took out this marriage license two weeks ago before you even fell in love.
- 23:51Where'd you get that Maria's apartment? Along with a bunch of love letters you
- 23:53wrote? Also before you fell in love, you thought the good Contrafano had
- 23:57passed out of your life. But then he turned up rich when the European
- 24:00courts verified his rights to his family estate. That's why you and Maria never
- 24:04used this marriage license. Yes again, why is guy? Because we are
- 24:07going to use a license we're getting married today. Why because of your great
- 24:11love or so? You can't testify against each other for the murder of Jonathan
- 24:18Templeton. Templeton figured out how you planned to take the accountant. He wanted
- 24:21the cuts. We had nothing to do with the murder of Templeton. Is
- 24:23that right, Harry? Turning state's evidence isn't a bad idea when the going
- 24:26gets rubbed. I'm sorry, Marie, He's right. You'd better tell him.
- 24:32Baby had nothing to tell him. You tell it, Harry. I
- 24:36drove her there, waited downstairs. Maria went up alone. You give her
- 24:40the ring. So she strangled him. Why I know he's because you'd never
- 24:48seen Templeton and you didn't know he was dead. You thought I was Templeton
- 24:52when you met me in the hall. What are you trying to do?
- 24:53Frame me? I'm getting out of here, not until you get a police.
- 25:02I killed him. He isn't that that was a nice shot, But
- 25:11what I'm sorry, And so I endure that little scene until Mark came in,
- 25:22followed shortly by the police, who took over. Then Marcus and I
- 25:26flagged a straight cab and headed back to the hotel. It did a panic

- 27:47Countrafano was quite a rascal and lent to quite a few problems, but cases
- 27:53satisfactorily resolved. So we turned out a listener comments and feedback, and we
- 27:59begin this from Kelly, who writes in, I just listened to the latest
- 28:03Frank Race episode, the Adventure of the Pharaoh's Staff. What perfect casting to
- 28:08have the great Jane Novello in the episode of About Egypt, shades of Rocky
- 28:15Jordan all over again. Maybe Sam Sabai had an alternate personality. Maybe he
- 28:21did. Then we have a couple of comments from iTunes Wiston Rights in love
- 28:29the show. True detective stories are on short supply. In my opinion,
- 28:32only the Golden Oldies have the zeal and intellect that made them stand out.
- 28:36It's also interesting to hear the old Time commercial. It helps give a bit
- 28:40of a peek into the emotions and backdrop of the times, especially during after
- 28:44the war. Great work, Adam, Thank you so much. And we
- 28:48have another review here Prairie Cricket Quilts rights. When I first found your podcast.

- 29:08shows themselves. Keep up the great work. I tell everyone I know about
