- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It is indeed Unscripted episode number three coming at you again.
- 0:21Speaker 1: This is a partnership of the National Hockey League and
- 0:24Speaker 1: I heard podcast Subscribe, rate and review and Dello wherever
- 0:27Speaker 1: you may get your podcast.
- 0:29Speaker 2: This is just the beginning of a new journey. But
- 0:31Speaker 2: we had a special moment last week.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Last week there was a moment where I knew, I said,
- 0:33Speaker 1: you know, I made a friend here in Jason Devers.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It was when he said him and his brother used
- 0:37Speaker 1: to watch Dog Day Afternoon, which is one of my
- 0:39Speaker 1: all time favorite movies. And I teased did last week.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So let me just pay off the teas because I
- 0:43Speaker 1: know there's people in the hundreds who've been waiting for
- 0:45Speaker 1: this moment. So when divers are yelling Attika, Attica, you like,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I go.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I know. So Pacinto told the story. He said he
- 0:52Speaker 2: was on set.
- 0:53Speaker 1: All it says is Sonny words, it yells, and the
- 0:55Speaker 1: assistant director, Bert Harris Turner goes ol say Attica, and
- 0:59Speaker 1: Patino goes what and he goes say Attica and he
- 1:02Speaker 1: goes Okay.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So he goes out there and he's just.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Attica, and a couple of guys kind of look over
- 1:07Speaker 1: like what he says is Attika, and they're like, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Akaino had no idea what it was a famous prison
- 1:16Speaker 1: ride at the time where the where the inmates took
- 1:19Speaker 1: umbrage against the guards at a big shoot up, big explosion,
- 1:22Speaker 1: et cetera.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And it was like it was like a rallying quiet
- 1:24Speaker 2: for the little guys. I was like, aca Anka. One
- 1:27Speaker 2: of the great moments of every movie history, dimmersed awesome.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Hey, one of the great movies. One of the great actors,
- 1:32Speaker 3: al Pacino. I like him and Duncacinos too.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Jack and Jill, which in his incredible book he released
- 1:40Speaker 1: this year called Sonny Boy. He admitted in the book
- 1:42Speaker 1: he said, here's what happened. He goes, I got ripped off.
- 1:44Speaker 1: It directly led to Jack and Jill. He goes, let's
- 1:46Speaker 1: be clear. He goes, Adam Sandler is a great guy,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and he goes, I ended up becoming friends with them,
- 1:50Speaker 1: But I would not do that film. I'm doing Donnie Brasco,
- 1:52Speaker 1: I'm doing Scarfies. I'm not gonna do Jack and Jill,
- 1:54Speaker 1: which that was the reference he did Dunccino as the
- 1:56Speaker 1: other way Pacino is.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's a great scene and awesome. It's a ridiculous movie.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I mean, he did Jack and Jill. Oh God, that
- 2:05Speaker 1: was okay, God awful. Let's get to what we really
- 2:07Speaker 1: want to talk. We're gonna discuss God awful, which is
- 2:09Speaker 1: the Buffalo Sabers. We're gonna discuss the rangers that make
- 2:11Speaker 1: it moves. We're gonna give love to a Nepo baby
- 2:13Speaker 1: who's an all time great broadcaster. But what everyone's really
- 2:16Speaker 1: talking about, JD is drones here in New Jersey. What's
- 2:19Speaker 1: going on with these drones?
- 2:21Speaker 3: Well, if this podcast sees the light of day, we
- 2:24Speaker 3: don't know what's gonna happen. Now that and our producers
- 2:28Speaker 3: camera's certain to go fuzzy. Now they're talking about drones, tal,
- 2:32Speaker 3: it's certain to go fuzzy. So they're trying to cancel
- 2:34Speaker 3: the stream here. But I mean, yeah, there's been drones
- 2:36Speaker 3: all over New York and New Jersey, apparently from my
- 2:39Speaker 3: findings in my readings on the dark Web, which I
- 2:44Speaker 3: don't tell I won't tell you how I got on there, but.
- 2:46Speaker 2: But somebody's warned me. They said, listen to Demur is
- 2:48Speaker 2: a bit of a conspiracy theorist.
- 2:49Speaker 3: But go ahead, Yes, well, I'm a truth teller, truth seeker.
- 2:53Speaker 3: You know, when all your conspiracies turned true, then are
- 2:56Speaker 3: you con there is good point now? Well, December second,
- 2:58Speaker 3: there was some radioactive material that went missing. They came
- 3:01Speaker 3: into the Port of Newark. Since then, they've been finding
- 3:04Speaker 3: those drones has been more and more. They're flying in
- 3:06Speaker 3: a grid like pattern, so they're searching for something. They're
- 3:09Speaker 3: sniffing for something. I hope it's gone, and I hope
- 3:13Speaker 3: it's in, you know, not around here. I won't I
- 3:16Speaker 3: won't say where, but I hope they got rid of
- 3:19Speaker 3: it and it's gone. But yeah, there's been some's it's
- 3:22Speaker 3: been wild to see the lights going at night and
- 3:24Speaker 3: you see I was I've seen one and I was
- 3:27Speaker 3: with Catherine Tappan and she said they're like she saw
- 3:30Speaker 3: like ten of them over her house.
- 3:32Speaker 1: This is like I seen it in a close Encounters
- 3:33Speaker 1: the third kind. Do you think do you think they're aliens?
- 3:36Speaker 2: Is it China? Is a Russia? What's going on?
- 3:38Speaker 3: US government's flying that that stuff? Because the fact that
- 3:42Speaker 3: they haven't said anything is like, yeah, it's probably the
- 3:44Speaker 3: US government, but I don't know what they're doing it for.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's pretty wild because people are seeing some crazy, crazy,
- 3:51Speaker 3: crazy stuff in the air with these drones flying at night,
- 3:53Speaker 3: and I don't know why they'd fly in the day.
- 3:54Speaker 3: It's be easier to see for the drone pilots. But hey, all.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Right, Nate Thomps is gonna be our special guest. It's
- 3:59Speaker 1: coming a couple of later on. Nate's got a wonderful backstory.
- 4:01Speaker 1: He's really overcome a lot. So I real look forward
- 4:03Speaker 1: to talking to Nate and there may be some more
- 4:05Speaker 1: developments he's making with NHL, and iHeart as well.
- 4:07Speaker 2: But let's get to the hockey.
- 4:09Speaker 4: JD.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You're well traveled. You know the terrain of North America.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I'd never been as a kid who was born in Toronto,
- 4:14Speaker 1: grew up in Kingston, never been to Northern Albert, never
- 4:16Speaker 1: been to Deadmonton until this past week Prime Monday night
- 4:20Speaker 1: hockey oil.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Oh you were how was that?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Oh? Fifty one degrees in Jersey. Granted we have drones
- 4:26Speaker 2: Edmonton one degree plenty on the ground. When someone said, Jay,
- 4:30Speaker 2: when someone says to you, hey, the best thing is
- 4:32Speaker 2: you don't have to leave the hotel. You can go
- 4:33Speaker 2: right to the arena. Through the hotel. That's the endorsement.
- 4:36Speaker 3: It's the tunnels. It's the mole people Edmonton and Winnipeg.
- 4:39Speaker 3: It's just tunnel people. Do you live inside a tunnel
- 4:42Speaker 3: for the winter time? You should have told me they have. Honestly, Yeah,
- 4:45Speaker 3: some of the best restaurants and in the NHL is
- 4:50Speaker 3: in Edmonton Uclinos. I think they rebranded it. But also
- 4:54Speaker 3: they have some amazing Italian great steakhouses. Really a restaurant,
- 4:58Speaker 3: a restaurant called meat which which listen, don't judge the name.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Some of the best barbecue I've had, fantastic barbecue.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Edmonton underrated, culinary city.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Cherry cherry glazed, baby back ribs.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Oh whoo, I.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Want my baby back, baby back, baby back ribs.
- 5:16Speaker 1: It definitely was a Game of the Year candidate. I'm
- 5:18Speaker 1: not sure how much time you had to be able
- 5:20Speaker 1: to watching tier game. It's entiretyme six to five game, dude,
- 5:23Speaker 1: firewagon hockey eighties style. I'm there with Mark Massey. I
- 5:26Speaker 1: feel like I'm at North Lean's Coliseum. And for the
- 5:28Speaker 1: Panthers to show that kind of resolved without Barkoff, as
- 5:31Speaker 1: you know, they'd been shut out in back to back games,
- 5:32Speaker 1: oily been shut out in three straight games once in
- 5:34Speaker 1: club history, putting up six going down against Stuart Skinner.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Hell of a game.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a great game. I again, it felt
- 5:41Speaker 3: like the playoffs last year in the finals, because you
- 5:44Speaker 3: felt like Edmonton carried the play for the majority of
- 5:47Speaker 3: the game, but yet somehow came out on the wrong
- 5:49Speaker 3: end and same kind of things plagued them. A couple
- 5:51Speaker 3: of turnovers, Bouchard makes a big one and he's been
- 5:55Speaker 3: good all year, and then obviously they score that weird
- 5:57Speaker 3: goal from behind the net, and they just seem to
- 5:59Speaker 3: find a way to win. And then the worst of
- 6:01Speaker 3: it for Edmonton Oilers fans is Sergei Bobrovski, who didn't
- 6:05Speaker 3: have a great game mhm with ten seconds left, just
- 6:09Speaker 3: ten bells saved, no stick, probably gave everybody a little
- 6:12Speaker 3: bit of PTSD because it was that dirty blocker save
- 6:15Speaker 3: that he did on him, and he does it on
- 6:17Speaker 3: dry Cidle in the dying embers of the game, And honestly, yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 3: you feel for the Edmundton Others fans. It's a little
- 6:25Speaker 3: concerning for me. We talked about it tonight on the
- 6:27Speaker 3: NHL Network micro it's a little concerning that. That's the
- 6:30Speaker 3: way they lost. They got pushed around again a little
- 6:33Speaker 3: bit in the third period. I didn't like what I
- 6:34Speaker 3: saw from Skinner on that that goal from behind the
- 6:36Speaker 3: net where he yeah, he gets run over, but he's
- 6:38Speaker 3: sitting up like you know, his visor's askew and he's
- 6:41Speaker 3: staring at the ref looking for a call, and I'm like,
- 6:43Speaker 3: you're not going to get a call like that come
- 6:44Speaker 3: playoff times. So we get up and kind of get
- 6:46Speaker 3: on the back check and it's it's it's a tough
- 6:49Speaker 3: one because they did it all playoffs. They were the
- 6:52Speaker 3: I thought they were the better team for majority that
- 6:55Speaker 3: that that final Stanley Cup Finals, and they were the
- 6:58Speaker 3: majority better team during this game, and they somehow find
- 7:01Speaker 3: a way to lose it. And on the flip side,
- 7:04Speaker 3: Florida and no Barkoff comes out, hangs in there six '
- 7:07Speaker 3: five against a very dynamic and it's a team who's
- 7:09Speaker 3: been really hot of late and just finds a way
- 7:12Speaker 3: to go in there and win.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I had a great conversation pal Marie, he w's gonna
- 7:17Speaker 1: sit down that morning and you did. Yeah, it was
- 7:19Speaker 1: great eight and a half minutes, Like mo is as
- 7:20Speaker 1: good as it gets he's candid.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Yeah, he's so candid, and say.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Candid, funny, insightful.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And we talked about that when he finally won, and
- 7:27Speaker 1: I said, you know, next year, if things keep going
- 7:30Speaker 1: the way they're going, you're gonna have coach over two
- 7:32Speaker 1: thousand games, only you and Scotti Boehmer in that territory.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And he's like, man, I'm feeling pretty close to flying
- 7:36Speaker 1: to the sun here, and this guy's got nine Stanley Cups.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But I said that moment Moen, you won, and he said,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you you're surrounded about all the people you love, all
- 7:42Speaker 1: the hard work, all the sacrifice.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I said, but you were up three to zero.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You guys almost gag this thing. I said, like, how
- 7:47Speaker 1: did you able to keep your resolve? And he goes,
- 7:49Speaker 1: the key is you have to find some positivity. And
- 7:52Speaker 1: the game five of that Cup final, we actually played great.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And I had to tell the guys, I know we've
- 7:55Speaker 1: lost re shut but game five we actually played really well,
- 7:58Speaker 1: might have been our best game of the series.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And I don't know if you can, but let's try
- 8:02Speaker 2: to have fun with it.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I tried to explain, like, hey, if I just WLD
- 8:04Speaker 1: you one game, you win the Stanley Cup.
- 8:06Speaker 2: That's hip to focus.
- 8:07Speaker 1: You can't look at we could be the first team
- 8:08Speaker 1: ever in history to lose four straight.
- 8:10Speaker 2: We can't lose a three elite et cetera. And he goes, listen,
- 8:12Speaker 2: it was a two to one game.
- 8:13Speaker 1: We had like nineteen icings in the third periods, but
- 8:16Speaker 1: we've somehow found a way. But that was that was
- 8:18Speaker 1: that positive. And I'm not sure if you believe in
- 8:19Speaker 1: that necessarily.
- 8:20Speaker 2: But that's how he said. They stayed the ship. Quite
- 8:22Speaker 2: frankly for the Panthers.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Kudos to them for getting it done. They don't, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 3: everybody just cares about the last game you win. That's
- 8:27Speaker 3: the most important one. And it was game seven for him.
- 8:29Speaker 3: So whether they won in seven or four, I think
- 8:32Speaker 3: it's a Cup's a cup in my book, So.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I'm with it.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And it was a hell of a game to watch
- 8:36Speaker 1: those two teams again, it makes you think about the
- 8:38Speaker 1: likelihood a potential Cup Finals rematch, first since Pittsburgh and
- 8:41Speaker 1: Detroit and Oh nine, just the third time in the
- 8:43Speaker 1: last forty one years.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Rarely, if ever, happens. I don't think it'll.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Happen personally, but the way those teams played it was
- 8:49Speaker 1: I can't see it right to many other teams in
- 8:50Speaker 1: the mix.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Well, you want to think so much has to go
- 8:54Speaker 3: right for you. And I feel like that was such
- 8:56Speaker 3: an anomaly that Pittsburgh Detroit year, and I can't see
- 9:00Speaker 3: it happening this year because they do think there's some
- 9:02Speaker 3: teams that are really poised. You know, the Dallas Star
- 9:04Speaker 3: seem really as you watch them playing the utinger of
- 9:08Speaker 3: it all, and they just seem to get these young
- 9:10Speaker 3: guys that come up and immediately produce. And I don't
- 9:13Speaker 3: know if Stuart Skinner can carry him through.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Again, not the answer, Go get Cam Talbot.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I'm not listening. I'm not saying I like that, I
- 9:21Speaker 1: like fear. I'm just saying Stuart Skinners.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, that's like the Flex Seal commercial.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Bang, Stuart Skinner's not the answer. He's not gonna I like.
- 9:33Speaker 3: I love stew he battles hard. I just think over,
- 9:36Speaker 3: you know, can he have the same success he did
- 9:39Speaker 3: in the playoffs, And again he didn't have great success.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Calvin Pickard had to come in and have possibly the
- 9:44Speaker 3: biggest game of that playoff series against Vancouver because they
- 9:47Speaker 3: were kind of all but but done and and and
- 9:50Speaker 3: we're just not playing the right way, and Picks came
- 9:53Speaker 3: in and kind of stole that game against Van. I
- 9:55Speaker 3: think it was game it might have been game four
- 9:57Speaker 3: or five. Uh, and then that was just kind of
- 10:00Speaker 3: all she wrote for Vancouver. So I know, Skinner, Yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 3: I just don't think you do again. I think I
- 10:05Speaker 3: think the West has some big teams coming out. You know,
- 10:07Speaker 3: Vegas looks unbelievable. Winnipeg it's murderers row more so than
- 10:12Speaker 3: you know. Last year, I thought there was an easy
- 10:14Speaker 3: I kind of tweeted and said before the playoffs said,
- 10:17Speaker 3: I said, Edmonton's got the best path to the finals.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I don't think you're going to see an easy path
- 10:22Speaker 3: this year. I think it's going to be just eight dogs.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Right right, right, right right, speaking of dog day afternoon,
- 10:30Speaker 1: before we get to the Sabers and the absolute disarrayed
- 10:33Speaker 1: that that team is currently enduring.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I don't want to say one more thing. I want
- 10:36Speaker 2: to say one more Marie.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Story ye because I said, and this was before the
- 10:39Speaker 1: term was coined, but you were mister irrelevant. Nineteen eighty
- 10:43Speaker 1: five NHL draft, Wendell Clark was number one, Palm Race
- 10:45Speaker 1: was number two, fifty two, the last.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Guy and he starts laughing.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Is again, definitely some Flyer scouts were fired over that decision,
- 10:51Speaker 1: I said, but seriously, tell me, I said, back then, right,
- 10:53Speaker 1: there's not NHL Draft conference kind of He goes, listen,
- 10:56Speaker 1: my mom is listening to the radio in the Sioux
- 10:58Speaker 1: and I used to play like house league.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Like I was fine.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I was, okay, my dad's got you're a good player
- 11:03Speaker 1: because my mom is listening everything. Thirty minutes and then
- 11:05Speaker 1: you called me eleven fifteen and I'm at the bar
- 11:07Speaker 1: with my buddy. He's the guy you got drafted. I
- 11:09Speaker 1: go what you got drafted? With the Flyers, And very
- 11:12Speaker 1: quickly I was like the Flyers, they're really good and
- 11:14Speaker 1: it's really late, Like, am I like the last guy?
- 11:16Speaker 1: I hope that wasn't the second last guy? So as
- 11:19Speaker 1: bad as that night, everything he had to do last.
- 11:21Speaker 1: He was the last guy to order a beer, he
- 11:23Speaker 1: was the last guy to hit a cabin.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Oh, because he just he wanted to do that. Yeah,
- 11:26Speaker 3: that's hilarious.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Paul.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Oh my god, Paul, I have a bet I'm gonna
- 11:29Speaker 3: want up Paul Maurice. So I got drafted in the
- 11:32Speaker 3: seventh round, one of the sixth when I was twenty,
- 11:35Speaker 3: so that was probably you tabulate the rounds. And you know,
- 11:39Speaker 3: we were watching the draft for a friend of mine
- 11:42Speaker 3: and it came to the seventh round and my dad was,
- 11:45Speaker 3: you know, on the computer or Dell whatever, Mac, whatever, HP.
- 11:49Speaker 3: It was before Maxim and he's refreshing the computer to
- 11:53Speaker 3: see who's coming, and it like you'd see each name
- 11:55Speaker 3: kind of come down. It would just get loaded in.
- 11:57Speaker 3: It looked like an Excel spreadsheet. And all of a sudden,
- 12:00Speaker 3: where he's going on and he sees Jaye demurz he
- 12:03Speaker 3: sees Jada Murry and he falls out of his chair
- 12:05Speaker 3: and it's just it was the San Jose Sharks and
- 12:08Speaker 3: he falls out of his chair and he goes, oh
- 12:09Speaker 3: my god, he got drafted. And we're like what what what?
- 12:12Speaker 3: We come to fight out? It's they drafted Julian Demurs
- 12:18Speaker 3: from the Ottawa sixty from from the Ottawa sixty sevens
- 12:22Speaker 3: Julian demurz uh And you know, the complete opposite of
- 12:28Speaker 3: me in terms of I mean, they'll they'll edit the
- 12:30Speaker 3: z but he was an African American kid as well.
- 12:33Speaker 3: So Julian, I'm.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Knocking at this South that's staying it because that is no,
- 12:37Speaker 1: there's something racist about that.
- 12:38Speaker 3: He's no, yeah, he's an Africa. I'm with you. I
- 12:42Speaker 3: got my garden with you. Uh no, so I and
- 12:46Speaker 3: he played for the Autawa sixty sevens at the time,
- 12:48Speaker 3: if I remember, great guy, good good defenseman too. And
- 12:51Speaker 3: then we get a phone call from San Jose and
- 12:54Speaker 3: they're like, hey, we're going to draft you and like
- 12:55Speaker 3: two more picks and I was Santjose's last pick of
- 12:57Speaker 3: the draft, like at one eighty six, and I was like, oh,
- 13:01Speaker 3: this is like you didn't draft me. So I'm like
- 13:03Speaker 3: I'm gonna get drafted. And now we found out after
- 13:05Speaker 3: it's Julian Demurs. So we went to camp and it
- 13:07Speaker 3: was like Julian Demurs. Jason mrs is like the Spider
- 13:10Speaker 3: Man meme of like, hey you're Jada Murse, I'm Jada
- 13:12Speaker 3: Murris and yeah, and he was I think he was
- 13:16Speaker 3: number sixty one in camp and I was sixty when
- 13:19Speaker 3: he was a left handed defenseman. I was a right
- 13:22Speaker 3: handed defenseman.
- 13:22Speaker 1: So it was literally it is like a spot to
- 13:24Speaker 1: man meme. I just shocked de Marris was coaching. Of course,
- 13:27Speaker 1: then it really made things.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Oh wonderful. That was low hanging fruit there. We'd better
- 13:33Speaker 3: than that. You start with the Maurice junk and then
- 13:35Speaker 3: you kind of bring that. Paul Marie, you're a Paul
- 13:37Speaker 3: Maurice bandwagon guy speaking. I love I love Paul. I
- 13:40Speaker 3: think that most a great guy. Yeah, I've heard only
- 13:43Speaker 3: great things.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Buffalo Sabers are not hearing great things right now. Complete disarray,
- 13:48Speaker 1: eleven straight losses. They enter Thursday's Action after losing to
- 13:52Speaker 1: the Maple Leafs. Sabers heads coach Lindy rob said, I'm
- 13:54Speaker 1: almost at a loss for words.
- 13:55Speaker 2: This is the toughest solve I've been around.
- 13:58Speaker 6: I'm almost lost for words. Obviously, it's all me to
- 14:03Speaker 6: solve this. This is the toughest solve I've been around.
- 14:06Speaker 3: But it is.
- 14:06Speaker 6: It's on me to get these guys in the right
- 14:09Speaker 6: place and win a hockey game, and nobody else just
- 14:11Speaker 6: made thanks.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Sabers owner Terry Pagoula love the fact daughter, by the way,
- 14:15Speaker 1: great tennis player, but cool and GM Kevin Adams reportedly
- 14:18Speaker 1: then met with the team to tell players that.
- 14:19Speaker 2: They believed in them.
- 14:21Speaker 1: The Sabers respond to that show of conference begetting blown
- 14:24Speaker 1: out in Montreal Tuesday night, Jay, we know the great
- 14:26Speaker 1: people of Western New York. We know how much they
- 14:28Speaker 1: love the Buffalo Sabers. They are waiting for their moment.
- 14:30Speaker 1: There's been bad personnel decisions. Jack eye call trade.
- 14:33Speaker 2: They had Lina Slimark on the team at one point.
- 14:34Speaker 2: We can go through the whole thing.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Ol Mark O'Reilly, Ryan Hirt right Ryer, Jack Eicel, Jack
- 14:40Speaker 3: eye call trade horrific.
- 14:42Speaker 2: How do you solve this tire fire in Buffalo?
- 14:44Speaker 3: I there's so many thoughts of anger towards that, not
- 14:52Speaker 3: at first the players, because you know, and I'm a
- 14:55Speaker 3: team I'm a player forward guy. Like as an analyst,
- 14:58Speaker 3: I always like to see the silver lining. But when
- 15:01Speaker 3: you get a goddamn vote of confidence, and when you
- 15:03Speaker 3: should not get a vote of confidence because you have
- 15:06Speaker 3: not pissed a drop all year. You know, there's not
- 15:08Speaker 3: even a drop of sweat out there from these guys,
- 15:11Speaker 3: you know, from a lot of them. I'm not gonna
- 15:13Speaker 3: say everybody, because I do think it's not one guy, like, yeah,
- 15:18Speaker 3: I mean Tage's Tage. He's gonna do good things. They
- 15:20Speaker 3: still think Tage can do more, you know, And I
- 15:22Speaker 3: skate with him in the summer, and I would kind
- 15:24Speaker 3: of tell him. I think there's more for him to give.
- 15:26Speaker 3: But I just think the showing that they gave in
- 15:29Speaker 3: that Montreal game, down two nothing in the first nine
- 15:32Speaker 3: shots to two did not even they weren't even skating.
- 15:37Speaker 3: It's crazy to me that you would go in there
- 15:40Speaker 3: basically get guaranteed job security, you know, you know, and
- 15:44Speaker 3: sometimes you know I say that, but you know, I've
- 15:47Speaker 3: been there where a coach or gms like clean Slate
- 15:50Speaker 3: and then I get traded the next day. That happened
- 15:53Speaker 3: with me Dale Talon, So you know, for me, I'm like, Okay, yeah,
- 15:57Speaker 3: you know, they're they're being really positive with us, but
- 15:59Speaker 3: to go out and give that showing is just a
- 16:01Speaker 3: spit in the face of of the g M and
- 16:05Speaker 3: you know, Pagoula. But on the flip side, Kevin Adams
- 16:09Speaker 3: needs to do way more. Uh.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I think he's though they made some bad moves and
- 16:13Speaker 2: I think he's scared that.
- 16:14Speaker 3: That's where they're at right now is they're like, well,
- 16:16Speaker 3: do we trade Taje Thompson or Owen Power and then
- 16:18Speaker 3: they go out and be a superstar, which you know
- 16:21Speaker 3: can happen because there's a lot of talent on that team. Uh.
- 16:24Speaker 3: But I just don't love I didn't love the Lindy
- 16:26Speaker 3: Rough hiring. I like Lindy Ruff. I had him as
- 16:28Speaker 3: a coach. We had our differences, but he got a
- 16:31Speaker 3: lot out of me that the games passed them by.
- 16:34Speaker 3: But it's just well, yeah, you're just trying to rinse
- 16:37Speaker 3: and repeat. I don't know if it's so tough when
- 16:39Speaker 3: you're like the games, you know, because it's like, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 3: we have to be unscripted. So I'm like, yeah, I
- 16:43Speaker 3: just think he I just think he wasn't the right
- 16:45Speaker 3: higher for that team. Like I just think it was
- 16:47Speaker 3: not they needed a whip cracker. They needed somebody to
- 16:50Speaker 3: come in and beat the crag. They need like Craig
- 16:55Speaker 3: one of those types of guy. Yes, they needed a
- 16:57Speaker 3: Tortorella or not a Hitchcock. Hitchcock stinks, but but may think.
- 17:01Speaker 2: It's just a difficult guy, disciplaria.
- 17:03Speaker 3: No hit, which is hit no, no, not hit. I'm
- 17:06Speaker 3: just saying he was not going to be a very
- 17:08Speaker 3: had a great career, but no, I think I think
- 17:11Speaker 3: torts or a Berube would have been perfect for them.
- 17:15Speaker 3: But I don't know if he would have taken that job,
- 17:17Speaker 3: you know, I don't know if this is I wrote.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Jim Montgomery is another one would have been a great
- 17:21Speaker 3: pickup for them, and there's a lot of talent on
- 17:23Speaker 3: that team. I'll finish it by saying that there's a
- 17:25Speaker 3: lot of talent. There's a lot of players on the
- 17:26Speaker 3: team that are superstars, cusp superstars that they someone needs
- 17:31Speaker 3: to grab it by the reins in that locker room
- 17:33Speaker 3: and change the culture fast.
- 17:35Speaker 2: One more topic, then we're gonna get to Nate Thompson.
- 17:38Speaker 1: This week saw the arrival the NHL Mobile refrigeration truck
- 17:40Speaker 1: at Wrigley. They're getting ready for the discovered NHL Winter Classic.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Blues and Blackhawks. I'm not gonna get the Winter Classic, though.
- 17:47Speaker 1: What I want to ask is this, We've seen these
- 17:50Speaker 1: types of ideas. Some would call them gimmicks, just things
- 17:52Speaker 1: to kind of freshen up the regular season. The NBA
- 17:54Speaker 1: just closed out the NBA Cup, which I think is
- 17:56Speaker 1: absolutely dreadful. I have I have no interest because to
- 18:00Speaker 1: be a cup, I go, why would I care? But
- 18:02Speaker 1: do you think hockey could use something like this? Are
- 18:04Speaker 1: you a fan of the NBA Cup?
- 18:06Speaker 3: It's the dumbest thing I've ever seen a sports team
- 18:10Speaker 3: to almost as dumb as this Golden Bat role that's
- 18:13Speaker 3: coming out.
- 18:13Speaker 2: That's the when happened. Baseball's discussed it talking out.
- 18:16Speaker 3: But you're right, yeah, but when you're even that that
- 18:18Speaker 3: was considered. You know, here's the thing, Like we talked
- 18:22Speaker 3: about it a little bit today to kind of just
- 18:24Speaker 3: texting back and forth about you know, our thoughts and
- 18:27Speaker 3: since I've been on the other side of this, seeing
- 18:29Speaker 3: the fandom for what it is and being an analyst
- 18:31Speaker 3: and seeing how much goes into the production for the
- 18:34Speaker 3: players to produce the play, produce you know, the product
- 18:38Speaker 3: that's on the ice. I mean, it's just like NBA
- 18:41Speaker 3: guys like for them to be giving what a million
- 18:43Speaker 3: dollar bonus, yeah, to win this thing, to not do
- 18:47Speaker 3: load management because they're tired of get you know, getting
- 18:50Speaker 3: sore legs and you're getting paid one hundred and twenty
- 18:52Speaker 3: million dollars and you're telling me you you need more
- 18:55Speaker 3: incentive to play a professional sport.
- 18:58Speaker 2: And that's what I say it.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Down to, not to say basketballs Listen. I get it,
- 19:02Speaker 3: you're trying to preserve longevity in your career to maximize
- 19:05Speaker 3: your earnings. Hey, listen, do what you got to do.
- 19:08Speaker 3: But to sit there and be like, oh, now you're
- 19:12Speaker 3: gonna try. Now you're gonna you know, I've used piss
- 19:14Speaker 3: a drop. Now you're gonna piss the drop that there's
- 19:17Speaker 3: a million dollar bonus prize. So you need more money,
- 19:21Speaker 3: you need to incentivized that. Well, you can't play for
- 19:23Speaker 3: Philadelphia the fan showing. And why I say that is,
- 19:26Speaker 3: you know, I use the term it's you know, it's
- 19:28Speaker 3: a fickle relationship between fans and players because again, fans
- 19:34Speaker 3: are the reason that you're making the money you're making.
- 19:37Speaker 3: You can say it's ownership, you can say the one.
- 19:39Speaker 3: They're the ones that pay your bills. The only reason
- 19:41Speaker 3: ownership is able to pay your bills is because revenue,
- 19:45Speaker 3: TV deals, concessions, ticket sales, which all is generated from
- 19:50Speaker 3: the fans. Eyeballs on the screens equals dollars in the puckets.
- 19:54Speaker 3: They're spending their harder and money where they can go
- 19:56Speaker 3: spend anywhere else if they wanted to, but they're doing
- 19:59Speaker 3: it on you, you know, and this kind of just
- 20:02Speaker 3: goes full circle to just play every game, or try
- 20:05Speaker 3: to play every game, you know, just don't be a
- 20:08Speaker 3: little say it s. Don't be a little bitch. We'll
- 20:14Speaker 3: find out talented editists or not, we're gonna find out
- 20:16Speaker 3: run we're unscripted.
- 20:17Speaker 2: I know that.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Hey, we're unscripted. So you want a couple hundred followers,
- 20:21Speaker 3: you're gonna get it. We support our fans.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Jason Deversus made it clear the NHL does not need
- 20:26Speaker 1: a mid season tournament period.
- 20:28Speaker 2: If you want an NBA Cup, the NHL beat it well.
- 20:31Speaker 3: For listen, four nations. That's great, great thing they put
- 20:34Speaker 3: on the NHL. Fantastic, good job. I love it well.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Four nations, that's listen, that's that's that's playing for the
- 20:40Speaker 3: country of the country. No, if they put like a
- 20:44Speaker 3: mini tournament in hockey, I'd be like, kick rocks down
- 20:47Speaker 3: the street, don't come back, because why it's you see
- 20:52Speaker 3: how hard NHL hockey players play.
- 20:54Speaker 5: You see it.
- 20:55Speaker 3: You see how hard guys block shot. You saw Zach
- 20:57Speaker 3: him and take one off the schnaz and and come
- 21:02Speaker 3: back literally fourve shifts later, playing with the visor.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Hymen look broken but unbound as he was able to
- 21:09Speaker 1: come back still to come here on NHLU scripted, get
- 21:12Speaker 1: closer to your Nate Thomson, who looks legit?
- 21:16Speaker 2: Who are the contenders? Who are the pretenders?
- 21:18Speaker 1: In this sport of hockey, plus very candidate about mental health,
- 21:22Speaker 1: his journey, and also conversion of Judaism. All the Jews
- 21:25Speaker 1: in the NHL stand up the highm that's coming up next.
- 21:39Speaker 1: A pleasure to bring in our special guest. You're an
- 21:41Speaker 1: episode number three of Unscripted. He was drafted in the
- 21:44Speaker 1: sixth round of the two thousand and three NHL Draft,
- 21:46Speaker 1: played eight hundred and forty four NHL games with nine
- 21:49Speaker 1: teams before retiring in twenty twenty three. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 21:53Speaker 1: it is Nate Thompson. Tom It is great to see you.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us here for a
- 21:57Speaker 1: few minutes. This is going to be a fascinating conversation.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Talk about your mental health journey, talk about your conversion
- 22:02Speaker 1: of Judaism.
- 22:03Speaker 2: We'll do some quick questions around the horn, but.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I want to start with just what's happened this season
- 22:07Speaker 1: so far on the NHL and Jane I didn't have
- 22:09Speaker 1: a chance to really get into too much of the
- 22:10Speaker 1: New York Rangers. We did in our previous episode, But
- 22:12Speaker 1: what the name of Coppo Coco is happening on Broadway?
- 22:15Speaker 1: How has this team gone from a President Shrophy winner
- 22:18Speaker 1: to a real mess right now.
- 22:20Speaker 7: Your thoughts, Well, first off, it's good to be here
- 22:22Speaker 7: with both of you guys. It's really nice being here.
- 22:26Speaker 7: And what is it, I don't know what night it is,
- 22:27Speaker 7: but it's nice to see you when tonight drone to
- 22:29Speaker 7: night and then to the Rangers state of emergency in
- 22:35Speaker 7: New York. I mean, it's you can't really blame one guy,
- 22:40Speaker 7: it's everybody. And I think it starts from the top down.
- 22:43Speaker 7: I mean, I don't think it's the play, just the players.
- 22:46Speaker 7: I think there's something else up top that is festering
- 22:49Speaker 7: all the way down to their team and you're kind
- 22:53Speaker 7: of seeing it. I mean, it's just been one disaster
- 22:55Speaker 7: after another. And I mean I watch them and it
- 22:58Speaker 7: looks like they almost look disinterested some games, Like it's
- 23:00Speaker 7: like they don't want to play defense, they don't want
- 23:02Speaker 7: to back check, they don't want to play they don't
- 23:04Speaker 7: want to play hockey, which is hard. Hockey is a
- 23:06Speaker 7: hard game to play. And that's what I see. I mean,
- 23:08Speaker 7: I know, I'm sure you guys see the same thing
- 23:11Speaker 7: and just different, yeah, different verbiage, but it's it's tough
- 23:14Speaker 7: to watch.
- 23:15Speaker 3: What's what you know, A veteran of your stature and
- 23:18Speaker 3: how many years he had in the league. What do
- 23:19Speaker 3: you sees as kind of the quick fix? I know,
- 23:22Speaker 3: the trade of Cocko for Will Borgan, which kind of
- 23:25Speaker 3: fills a little bit of holes on the D side,
- 23:27Speaker 3: But like, what do you think it is? Is it
- 23:29Speaker 3: coaching that needs to change? Does Drury need to kind
- 23:31Speaker 3: of maybe potentially go or is it something culture based
- 23:34Speaker 3: that's like crept in. But I agree with you initial
- 23:37Speaker 3: sentiment that it's top down. But I don't know what's
- 23:40Speaker 3: the quick fix.
- 23:41Speaker 7: I mean, the quick fix obviously would be the coach, right,
- 23:43Speaker 7: I mean, that would be the quickest thing. That seems
- 23:45Speaker 7: to be the quickest fix every team does. I guess
- 23:50Speaker 7: that would be the solution. But at the same time, Jady,
- 23:53Speaker 7: you know well you and you and I both know
- 23:56Speaker 7: well it's it comes within the room first. And I
- 24:00Speaker 7: don't know what they need to do. I mean, this
- 24:02Speaker 7: team was a year removed from winning the presence and
- 24:04Speaker 7: now they're you know, they can't win a game right now,
- 24:07Speaker 7: and if they do, they're barely winning that game. So
- 24:11Speaker 7: I guess it's the coach and it's in that room.
- 24:13Speaker 7: I mean, do they need to make another big trade
- 24:15Speaker 7: is that going to fix everything? I don't know, but
- 24:17Speaker 7: I mean they just did make a big trade with
- 24:19Speaker 7: their captain, so who knows. I mean, I think it's
- 24:22Speaker 7: in that room and we'll see how they get it done.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I'll think of a long road ahead, it feels like
- 24:27Speaker 1: right now for the Rangers. But we want to talk
- 24:29Speaker 1: specifically to you, Nate about your own journey. And you've
- 24:31Speaker 1: been very candid speaking about mental health in relation to
- 24:34Speaker 1: pressure of the NHL. I think it's brave of you
- 24:37Speaker 1: and it's courageous. I'm sure it's helped innumerable people. How
- 24:39Speaker 1: much apprehension did you have prior to first discussing it publicly?
- 24:44Speaker 4: A ton?
- 24:44Speaker 7: I mean, I remember when I was playing and talking
- 24:46Speaker 7: about it and some of my struggles.
- 24:49Speaker 4: It was at first, it was very hard for me.
- 24:51Speaker 7: I wasn't sure if I wanted to talk about it,
- 24:52Speaker 7: and then you know, talking about it with other people beforehand,
- 24:56Speaker 7: I realized that it's kind of bigger than me. It's
- 24:59Speaker 7: bigger than us, you know, And it was one of
- 25:01Speaker 7: those things where if I talked about it, then maybe
- 25:03Speaker 7: I could help one person that was feeling the same
- 25:06Speaker 7: way or thinking the same way.
- 25:08Speaker 4: And that's kind of how it started.
- 25:10Speaker 7: And then you know, even now post career, I've been
- 25:12Speaker 7: speaking a little bit more about it, and you know,
- 25:15Speaker 7: I've been getting messages from people sometimes where it's like, hey,
- 25:20Speaker 7: I'm feeling the same way, you know, or you know,
- 25:22Speaker 7: just because you said that, I wasn't sure how to
- 25:24Speaker 7: how to feel and now I know exactly how you feel,
- 25:26Speaker 7: you know. And it was just kind of that familiarity
- 25:29Speaker 7: with people and knowing that it's okay to feel bad
- 25:33Speaker 7: one day. You know, it's okay for someone to ask you, hey,
- 25:35Speaker 7: how you doing You're like not so good, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 7: instead of saying I'm fine, I'm okay, you.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Know, when really you're not.
- 25:41Speaker 7: And I think it's maybe just getting that narrative out
- 25:44Speaker 7: there where people can be like.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm having a bad week.
- 25:48Speaker 7: I'm having a really bad week, and I'm like, oh, okay,
- 25:51Speaker 7: well that's good. Thanks for being honest, you know. And
- 25:53Speaker 7: it's as simple as that, I think, and getting that
- 25:57Speaker 7: out there talking about.
- 25:58Speaker 4: It more just it just helps.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Is there a moment or like a person that you
- 26:04Speaker 3: had in your life that kind of pushed you to
- 26:07Speaker 3: finally kind of really talk about it, because because listen,
- 26:10Speaker 3: I dealt with it like crazy. Performance anxiety led me
- 26:13Speaker 3: to a lot of drugs and alcohol and painkills, pain
- 26:16Speaker 3: coats because I didn't want to lose being in the NHL.
- 26:19Speaker 3: And I kind of, like you said, you said something
- 26:21Speaker 3: that resonated with me is it's just like saying hey,
- 26:23Speaker 3: every day I was like, oh, I'm good, I'm good.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Everything's great, I feel great, I'm good when I wasn't,
- 26:28Speaker 3: and it just compounds, and it compounds, and I needed
- 26:30Speaker 3: somebody to be like, hey, you're not good, like talk
- 26:33Speaker 3: about it, and that would have probably sparked me quicker.
- 26:36Speaker 3: You know, Now everything's is great and good, But was
- 26:40Speaker 3: there somebody that or like a moment in time where
- 26:43Speaker 3: it just kind of where like I really need to
- 26:45Speaker 3: kind of seek out my own health benefits and not
- 26:49Speaker 3: health benefits but my own mental clarity and really fix this.
- 26:54Speaker 7: Yeah, when I was playing in Anaheim almost ten years ago,
- 27:00Speaker 7: I had a problem. I was, you know, like you said,
- 27:03Speaker 7: drinking everything. And there was a moment where Ryan Getz
- 27:09Speaker 7: laugh looked at me and said to me, Nate, are
- 27:13Speaker 7: you okay? And it was like, you know, it was
- 27:16Speaker 7: a question where you know, he wasn't asking me, you know,
- 27:19Speaker 7: what's going on that day. It was like you could
- 27:21Speaker 7: tell he was like, are you okay? And I was not,
- 27:25Speaker 7: And I said to him I was, but it like
- 27:28Speaker 7: stuck with me and it hit me in my in
- 27:30Speaker 7: my gut, like I am not okay and I need
- 27:34Speaker 7: to get some help. And I remember that till the
- 27:36Speaker 7: day I die. And that was kind of a moment
- 27:41Speaker 7: that really kind of changed the course of my life
- 27:43Speaker 7: and direction. And I knew that, like, all right, I
- 27:47Speaker 7: got a problem. I need to get some help and
- 27:49Speaker 7: I need to figure this out. And that was a
- 27:51Speaker 7: big moment for me.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Talk right now with Nate Thompson about his journey in
- 27:54Speaker 1: the NHL and the battles off the ice as well.
- 27:57Speaker 1: You know, it's amazing your conversion to Judaism. Right now,
- 28:00Speaker 1: it's the golden age of Jews in the NHL. My
- 28:02Speaker 1: dear friend Scott Rogowski used to call the NHL the
- 28:05Speaker 1: no Hebrew League, but right now it is no longer
- 28:07Speaker 1: that we got the Hughes brothers, Jeremy swam and Adam Fox,
- 28:10Speaker 1: Zach him and even Sharkswitch. Ryan Warsovsky is light in
- 28:14Speaker 1: the handles right now. This Hanukah, which will be on
- 28:16Speaker 1: Boxing Day, how did that come about? How did you
- 28:18Speaker 1: decide to become a Jew?
- 28:20Speaker 7: Well, it was a marriage. I got married and that's
- 28:22Speaker 7: that's that's how that happened. You know, when you you know,
- 28:25Speaker 7: you just say yes and you you do what you're.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Told, right JD.
- 28:30Speaker 3: You know, oh it goes That's that's certainly how it goes. Yeah,
- 28:34Speaker 3: if my wife had a religion she created, I would
- 28:36Speaker 3: I would be in there. I would certainly be how
- 28:39Speaker 3: it went.
- 28:40Speaker 4: So yeah, and I was was around it all the time.
- 28:43Speaker 7: And at the time, we were thinking about raising our
- 28:47Speaker 7: kids and if if they if we did, we were
- 28:49Speaker 7: going to raise them Jewish because her family was Jewish
- 28:51Speaker 7: and I mean just the overall the family. How it's
- 28:55Speaker 7: very family oriented. And I just kind of grew to
- 28:59Speaker 7: liking to it. And when we got married, I converted.
- 29:01Speaker 4: And the rest is history.
- 29:03Speaker 7: And and fun fact, my and Hebrew name is Naton.
- 29:09Speaker 7: So when I was playing in l A, that's when
- 29:13Speaker 7: I was you know, I went through the conversion and
- 29:17Speaker 7: so the boys were all calling me Naton after that
- 29:20Speaker 7: for a while, like.
- 29:21Speaker 4: That was that was a nickname. Naton.
- 29:23Speaker 1: So okay, how about the Golden Age of Jews right
- 29:26Speaker 1: now in the NHL, like that's pretty it is.
- 29:28Speaker 7: And even you even added a guy named Jeremy Swayman.
- 29:31Speaker 7: He's from He's from my hometown too, He's from Alaska.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Adam Fox you said, did you say Adam.
- 29:35Speaker 4: Foxox is another one? Hymen?
- 29:37Speaker 3: What? Uh? Yeah, I'm in Yeah, i'man. I mean, I
- 29:41Speaker 3: mean I was. I'm on my Wikipedia page.
- 29:44Speaker 2: People think that is Jewish.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, there was like he's not Jewish. When I
- 29:48Speaker 3: was in San Jose, uh, we thought for a minute.
- 29:52Speaker 3: My my dad never knew his father, and his mother
- 29:55Speaker 3: passed away and I can tell the story now, but
- 29:58Speaker 3: on his death, on her deathbed, he asked her what nationality,
- 30:03Speaker 3: who's my dad? This and that? And she said he's
- 30:06Speaker 3: a Jewish businessman. So we thought we were Jewish for
- 30:08Speaker 3: three four years until my dad was like, I got
- 30:11Speaker 3: to figure this out and got a twenty three and
- 30:12Speaker 3: me not an ounce of heritage in US. We're Greek
- 30:16Speaker 3: and Italian, all right.
- 30:17Speaker 2: A little rapid fire with Nate.
- 30:19Speaker 1: We closed nine different teams and some of the great
- 30:21Speaker 1: cities in Anchel, including Los Angeles, Montreal, Philadelphia, and Tampa's.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Here we go, Nate, don't forget, don't forget. In the Bakersfield,
- 30:28Speaker 3: Ontario connection.
- 30:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Who could we ever forget? Best food?
- 30:34Speaker 4: Best food?
- 30:37Speaker 3: What city?
- 30:38Speaker 4: Montreal?
- 30:39Speaker 3: Ah, well done? Which restaurant? What's your restaurant? You remember
- 30:44Speaker 3: Joe Beef? You hit it.
- 30:45Speaker 7: Joe Beef is good, but I was a big Rubens. No, uh,
- 30:51Speaker 7: why can't it? Italian place?
- 30:53Speaker 4: Oh, Emma, Emma was good, but there was another one.
- 30:56Speaker 4: I can't remember it. Oh my gosh, it's gonna bother me.
- 30:58Speaker 4: The Emma is really good though.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you know it was a women's prison.
- 31:04Speaker 4: I didn't know that before that. Yeah, she did not
- 31:06Speaker 4: know that. This guy just fun facts all over the place.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Craziest fans got to be Philadelphia, tough, Winnipeg, Winnipeg or Philly.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Yeah, wow, Winnipeg, that's a that's a hot take. That's
- 31:22Speaker 3: no no, but like that's I would not have guessed
- 31:25Speaker 3: that over Philly because Philly is nuts. But Winnipeg, hey.
- 31:28Speaker 4: When I yeah, but I'll put Philly first. You're right,
- 31:31Speaker 4: Winnipeg is up there though, all right.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Worst traffic Los Angeles, I.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Mean yeah, la oh, that's got awful.
- 31:39Speaker 4: I was in it today, Yeah, I mean it's every day.
- 31:42Speaker 3: What was your commute to the rink how long?
- 31:45Speaker 7: Well, today was where I'm living now, it's like an
- 31:49Speaker 7: hour this morning it was an hour. But when I
- 31:52Speaker 7: was living over there by the rink, I was it
- 31:53Speaker 7: was like fifteen minutes. And I was living by the beach.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Her most sat heard of it, that community and her
- 32:00Speaker 3: mosa with these kings, guys, you would not believe this
- 32:03Speaker 3: ad And then yeah, you wake up in the morning
- 32:05Speaker 3: and it's like and they're just all outside with beers
- 32:10Speaker 3: on the street corner.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Did you hear another guy?
- 32:14Speaker 3: It's hilarious. They like all live like a block for
- 32:17Speaker 3: each other. It's like twenty of them. Yeah, So have
- 32:19Speaker 3: you ever need to hang out with some of you
- 32:20Speaker 3: just like poke your head out the window and you're like, oh,
- 32:22Speaker 3: there's Greener, Matt Green cracking a beer at eight in
- 32:25Speaker 3: the morning.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Walk everywhere, golf carts.
- 32:27Speaker 3: It's yeah, it's yeah, it's a.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Vibe or most of to go meet some kings. How
- 32:32Speaker 2: about the most polite people.
- 32:36Speaker 7: Let's go with uh, let's go with Winnipeg, Canada again.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Yeah, good people, best home locker room.
- 32:49Speaker 4: Now, I have to think there's a lot of teams
- 32:53Speaker 4: to think about, you know.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Journeyman it's a lot of teams.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Nine teams are going through the role. It's a lot
- 33:00Speaker 2: of locker.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Rooms, you know, Montreal.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I have one because we've kind of both you know,
- 33:06Speaker 3: we did quite a few teams. Uh, what is like
- 33:09Speaker 3: one packing technique you picked up over the years as
- 33:15Speaker 3: as somebody that's kind of you know, been around. We've
- 33:17Speaker 3: been journeymen.
- 33:18Speaker 7: Oh for sure, like rolling T shirts and like like
- 33:22Speaker 7: maximizing space the biggest thing.
- 33:25Speaker 4: And I'm I was a guy too. Whenever I got
- 33:27Speaker 4: to the hotel.
- 33:28Speaker 7: I don't know how you guys are, but I unpack everything,
- 33:31Speaker 7: mainly immediately unpack everything, put my bag away, like hang
- 33:35Speaker 7: up everything.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Let's get comfortable, guys, like this is going to be
- 33:38Speaker 2: home for a little bit.
- 33:39Speaker 4: You know.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Well, yeah, you got to use that like old sixteen
- 33:42Speaker 3: from the sixteen hundreds victorian drawer, just open it up.
- 33:46Speaker 4: And I never and I never.
- 33:48Speaker 7: I don't know if you guys, I'm a little bit
- 33:49Speaker 7: of a so playing with Teddy Purcell.
- 33:52Speaker 4: He was my roommate. JD knows this guy.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Oh god, the you two are roommates. Yeah, we were roommates.
- 33:57Speaker 3: I wonder you sought out mental health.
- 34:03Speaker 4: We were roommates.
- 34:04Speaker 7: For like, yeah, I don't know, however, long in Tampa
- 34:07Speaker 7: and he's kind of a germophobe, and so we he
- 34:10Speaker 7: looked up and found that like if you leave your
- 34:12Speaker 7: bag or your clothes on the floor, who knows, bugs whatever,
- 34:18Speaker 7: So we would always put I always put my bag
- 34:20Speaker 7: above on something like never on the ground ever, just
- 34:23Speaker 7: so you guys know.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Wow, that's an interesting one. Yeah.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Two more for you. City where you were the most
- 34:29Speaker 2: anonymous as an NHL player anonymous? Yeah, you could walk
- 34:33Speaker 2: the streets. Doone has any idea? You play in the
- 34:35Speaker 2: NHL l.
- 34:36Speaker 3: A and they won and they won Cups. That's what's wild.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Okay, City where you were the least anonymous an NHL player,
- 34:43Speaker 1: I'm going to answer for you, Winnipeg.
- 34:47Speaker 3: No trail, trail, give some respect to my city. Joe Beef,
- 34:54Speaker 3: Joe Beef, Winnipeg. You're you're all bundled up going through
- 34:56Speaker 3: the mold the tunnels.
- 34:59Speaker 2: There all people ex nate.
- 35:02Speaker 1: This was awesome, man, Seriously, thank you for the insight,
- 35:04Speaker 1: the humor, and obviously kudos for what you've done off
- 35:07Speaker 1: the ice as well. And like I said, the way
- 35:09Speaker 1: you've shined a light with with mental health that somebody
- 35:11Speaker 1: is certainly to be appreciated. And we hear maybe some
- 35:13Speaker 1: work coming down the tunnel here with NHL and iHeart,
- 35:15Speaker 1: so hopefully we'll have in the family.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Yeah, there's something coming hopefully.
- 35:18Speaker 7: It's uh, you know how things have to just iron
- 35:20Speaker 7: themselves out, as you guys know, and it'll be coming soon.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:23Speaker 8: As for ask for extra cash, all.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Right, great stuff there from Nate Thompson again, hopefully something
- 35:37Speaker 1: coming down the pike or NHL and iHeart, but obviously
- 35:39Speaker 1: a great dude, Jay and somebody you obviously go back
- 35:41Speaker 1: with from the days of Bakersfield.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Yeah, down the pike. Did you say down the pike
- 35:45Speaker 3: or down the pipe?
- 35:46Speaker 2: I think I meant to say pipe, but I said Pike.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Pike unscripted, unscripted. Know's his story, his story is great.
- 35:53Speaker 3: And I got to play some golf with them this summer,
- 35:55Speaker 3: and uh, you know, big advocate for mental health, and
- 35:58Speaker 3: I think, you know, I've been getting more comfortable talking
- 36:01Speaker 3: about my story and it's fun to see guys like
- 36:04Speaker 3: that that are very candid with their story. And also
- 36:08Speaker 3: you know, walking the walk and talk and yeah, sorry
- 36:10Speaker 3: talking the talk, walking the walk, but you know, it's
- 36:13Speaker 3: it's just important more guys say it. You see more
- 36:15Speaker 3: and more guys going into the program, and you know,
- 36:18Speaker 3: I don't know the numbers exactly, but you know, recently
- 36:21Speaker 3: see a lot of guys even for stress and mental health,
- 36:23Speaker 3: and I just think it's so important to have an outlet.
- 36:24Speaker 3: And Nate talking about Ryan getzof just looking at him
- 36:27Speaker 3: saying are you okay? And that could spark some change
- 36:30Speaker 3: and at least get somebody out of a funk, because yeah,
- 36:33Speaker 3: you're making good money and you know you're but it's
- 36:35Speaker 3: a tough business mentally on you and and stress and
- 36:40Speaker 3: with injuries and things like that and playing not playing,
- 36:42Speaker 3: so it's it's a tough sport. And and all sports
- 36:45Speaker 3: are tough. And listen, you we make fun and tell
- 36:48Speaker 3: guys to you know, pick it up, and especially the
- 36:51Speaker 3: basketball guys and things like that play play for the fans.
- 36:53Speaker 3: But yeah, we listen. There is a level of the
- 36:55Speaker 3: mental health side of it that's very important. And but
- 36:58Speaker 3: learning to kind of find your outlet and and talking
- 37:00Speaker 3: to people when you need to and making sure that
- 37:03Speaker 3: you check in with your teammates, but also checking with
- 37:05Speaker 3: yourself and make sure that you're doing good and you're
- 37:07Speaker 3: all copasetic.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it takes a lot of guts.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Like you said, you may think that it's a sign
- 37:13Speaker 1: of weakness, but it's actually a sign of strength to
- 37:15Speaker 1: reveal what you're going through and to have that support
- 37:16Speaker 1: in the locker room and support throughout the NHL, which
- 37:18Speaker 1: has really been nice to see, and as I said,
- 37:20Speaker 1: it's been spreading throughout society as well. All Right, some
- 37:22Speaker 1: fun topics here before we close things up for an
- 37:25Speaker 1: episode three of un Scripted. Academy Awards shortlist unveiled on Tuesday,
- 37:29Speaker 1: which was great news for Wicked and Amelia Perez, huge showing. However,
- 37:32Speaker 1: the documentary category, Christopher Reeves documentary is Superman, which is outstanding.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Continues to trend here of the Academy.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Awards, which is that they don't like these celebrity documentaries,
- 37:41Speaker 1: meaning previously last year still on Michael J. Foxter which
- 37:44Speaker 1: is an incredible documentary, is available on appleplast. A lot
- 37:47Speaker 1: of people saw it. Who doesn't love Michael J.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Fox.
- 37:49Speaker 1: But people just right away were like, now, the Oscars
- 37:52Speaker 1: doesn't want to reward the documentaries they get the most
- 37:54Speaker 1: pub Their thought is, let's give that documentary that nobody's seen,
- 37:58Speaker 1: rather than the documentary that you might have seen, So
- 38:00Speaker 1: I don't necessarily.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Agree with that thought process.
- 38:02Speaker 1: I think Superman is a wonderful documentary and Christopher Ree
- 38:05Speaker 1: was a really inspirational figure.
- 38:06Speaker 3: I knew.
- 38:07Speaker 1: We'll read a little bit his son from ESPN. He's
- 38:08Speaker 1: a great guy. Big Rangers fan by the way.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Yeah, wow, that's wild.
- 38:13Speaker 1: But anyway, so hopefully people will still check out Superman
- 38:16Speaker 1: even though it's not nominated for the Oscars. Having said that,
- 38:18Speaker 1: Conclave is gonna do very wealthy Oscars but nominated for
- 38:21Speaker 1: a bunch of Golden globes. Ray find Stanley Tucci, you
- 38:24Speaker 1: saw it. I want the JD review of Conclave one
- 38:27Speaker 1: of the year's best films.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't. I don't understand, and I will never
- 38:32Speaker 3: know how they could make poping so, you know, so exciting.
- 38:38Speaker 2: What's the movie We're gonna search for a new Pope?
- 38:40Speaker 3: Yeah, but just they made it so exciting and the
- 38:43Speaker 3: twists and turns of it, and obviously you know Ray
- 38:46Speaker 3: fines Is are He's in my top ten best of
- 38:50Speaker 3: all time.
- 38:50Speaker 2: I just never won an Oscar. One of the great
- 38:52Speaker 2: actress I never won an Oscar might.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Be so incredible. Yeah, and everything he does, and he's
- 38:55Speaker 3: got such a wide range too. And you know, Stanley
- 38:58Speaker 3: Tucci didn't have as big as a role as I thought,
- 39:00Speaker 3: but you know.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I'm a huge Tucci guy. Wish he was little more
- 39:02Speaker 1: on the way, but he's great as always.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Yeah, he fantastic. You know, they just did such a
- 39:07Speaker 3: good job of kind of portraying the how big and
- 39:10Speaker 3: grandiose it is in this world within you know, it's
- 39:14Speaker 3: a secondary world. It's like its own country, and you know,
- 39:17Speaker 3: they have all the you know, they have more wealth
- 39:19Speaker 3: than anybody in the world or any country in the world.
- 39:22Speaker 3: And the way they kind of portrayed that and also
- 39:24Speaker 3: portrayed the human side of all of these popes and
- 39:28Speaker 3: archbishops and cardinals and showed them as humans that make
- 39:31Speaker 3: a lot of mistakes. I just thought it was really cool.
- 39:33Speaker 3: And I loved the music. The it was quiry. It
- 39:37Speaker 3: almost felt like horror music, a little bit like suspense
- 39:41Speaker 3: thriller music for you know, again poping where they're just
- 39:44Speaker 3: walking around, walking from door to door and talking about
- 39:47Speaker 3: like are you voting for this guy? Are you voting
- 39:49Speaker 3: for this guy?
- 39:49Speaker 6: Oh?
- 39:50Speaker 3: I just thought it was it was really really cool
- 39:52Speaker 3: how they kind of put it all together.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Yeah, it's directed by Edward Berger, who did a great
- 39:56Speaker 1: job with All Quiet in the Western Front, which was
- 39:58Speaker 1: nominally for Best International Film and Best Pictures. A really
- 40:00Speaker 1: talented young director and was able to really make as
- 40:02Speaker 1: you said, I stroyed, that's unconven rather riveting. We haven't
- 40:05Speaker 1: brought in producer Tally yet because we weren't sure what's Mike,
- 40:08Speaker 1: but tell I want to bring in right now?
- 40:10Speaker 2: Have you seen conclaim? Very interested in this poping? Where
- 40:12Speaker 2: are you at with this movie?
- 40:14Speaker 4: I haven't seen any of these they were getting.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Nora is the favorite to win Best Picture?
- 40:21Speaker 4: Have you heard of it?
- 40:21Speaker 2: Do you know what this is about? A stripper?
- 40:23Speaker 3: I've been hearing about Honora.
- 40:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been hearing about Anora a lot and I
- 40:29Speaker 4: haven't seen it, but that's on the list to see it.
- 40:35Speaker 4: I'm going to see to see it.
- 40:36Speaker 7: I will and I'm going to see a complete unknown
- 40:39Speaker 7: when that comes out.
- 40:40Speaker 3: That's a that's a date night and we're going to
- 40:44Speaker 3: check that out. We're going to check that out.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Last not on Conclave. What a right hook of an ending.
- 40:49Speaker 2: We're not going to give it.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Away, but that was Yeah, Now, this is what I'm
- 40:53Speaker 1: gonna say, did you like it in your knock? I
- 40:55Speaker 1: don't know if you liked it. It was it was surprising.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I don't know if I liked it.
- 40:58Speaker 3: Well, you know, this is where you know, with the
- 41:00Speaker 3: times we're in.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Uh.
- 41:03Speaker 3: I just didn't love that force feeding of it. You know,
- 41:06Speaker 3: I don't like anything force fed to me. Nothing, you know,
- 41:10Speaker 3: crazy about it other than a nice bull soup, nice
- 41:13Speaker 3: monts of ball soup. I don't want anything force fed
- 41:15Speaker 3: to me. So yeah, I wasn't crazy about it, But
- 41:18Speaker 3: than it is what it is. I thought that actor
- 41:21Speaker 3: was incredible. Yeah, and I thought his speech about you know, I.
- 41:27Speaker 3: I don't want to give any spoilers, but yeah, his
- 41:30Speaker 3: speech kind of that one. Oh god, I can't say anything.
- 41:34Speaker 1: This is a little tough. Let's just get out of it.
- 41:36Speaker 1: We have two more topics left.
- 41:39Speaker 2: I want to tell everybody now, no one's going to
- 41:41Speaker 2: see it.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Zach Deats was spotted running with his gear to the
- 41:45Speaker 1: game after he was alerted just over an hour before
- 41:47Speaker 1: the game he'd be dressing for the Ottawa Centers. This
- 41:49Speaker 1: is the topic of the ebug I guess from I
- 41:52Speaker 1: don't explain this, but emergency backup goalie.
- 41:54Speaker 2: OK the e bug system. I love it, JD. Because
- 41:57Speaker 2: this this this gives.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Thought to the guy, your buddy who was a house
- 42:01Speaker 1: league goalie might have his chance to play the NHL.
- 42:03Speaker 2: I love the who does are you in on the plug? Yeah?
- 42:07Speaker 3: I mean anytime, anytime this happens in the rarity when
- 42:10Speaker 3: it does happen, I mean, I think all the fans
- 42:12Speaker 3: love it too, because you're it's you essentially, it's you
- 42:16Speaker 3: on the ice and you're getting that you know, fantasy
- 42:19Speaker 3: camp chance against you know, some of the greats and
- 42:23Speaker 3: people you watch, and I think everybody wishes they could
- 42:25Speaker 3: get one game, and everybody talks about it. Do you
- 42:28Speaker 3: think you you know, even NHL guys, do you think
- 42:29Speaker 3: you could throw a completion in the NFL? Or if
- 42:33Speaker 3: you know some sure people are like, hey, do you
- 42:34Speaker 3: think you could score a goal or make a save
- 42:36Speaker 3: in the NHL? So I think it's really gives It's
- 42:39Speaker 3: a cool thing, you know, obviously it it would be
- 42:43Speaker 3: too hard to have somebody that's in the city that's
- 42:45Speaker 3: like an actual, you know, guy playing for a club
- 42:47Speaker 3: team or university team. I'd like to maybe give it
- 42:49Speaker 3: to like a junior team that's in the city. Give
- 42:51Speaker 3: it to that goalie if he's there, you know, or
- 42:55Speaker 3: somebody that kind of is playing it. If there's a
- 42:58Speaker 3: university as well, like trying to make it a little
- 43:00Speaker 3: bit more streamlined.
- 43:01Speaker 2: You'd rather go young guy rather than Samboni driver.
- 43:03Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean the Zamboni drivers cool because like
- 43:07Speaker 3: I've you know, my Beerley goal that I played with
- 43:09Speaker 3: in Phoenix, Arizona. I'd love for him to get a
- 43:11Speaker 3: game because I chirp him all the time and I
- 43:14Speaker 3: would shacker. I wish he was shacker. I wish you
- 43:19Speaker 3: would get a game because he could kick when he's going,
- 43:22Speaker 3: but it takes him about sixty shots to warm up
- 43:25Speaker 3: and you get it in Beer League. So like he's
- 43:28Speaker 3: I just wish he could, you know, he could see
- 43:30Speaker 3: the see one NHL game. Yeah, it's cool. I like it. Obviously,
- 43:34Speaker 3: I think the system might be a touch out dated,
- 43:37Speaker 3: but I think it's a cool little thing that the
- 43:38Speaker 3: NHL has. You know, it's no it's no NBA Cup
- 43:42Speaker 3: or you know, or Golden bat role, but you know
- 43:44Speaker 3: it's it's the ebug last thing.
- 43:46Speaker 1: All kiding aside. Jad does a phenomenal job on HL
- 43:48Speaker 1: Network with your breakdowns. Talas is very skeptical of this
- 43:52Speaker 1: is an audio medium.
- 43:53Speaker 2: With iHeart that you were insistent that you did this
- 43:55Speaker 2: video breakdown to him one time.
- 43:57Speaker 3: I know, and we were just here, but go ahead, hey, listen,
- 44:01Speaker 3: it happened tonight with it happened the last two nights,
- 44:04Speaker 3: Gap last night and then Sandheim tonight. When you're giving
- 44:07Speaker 3: up a two on one, there's two ways of playing it.
- 44:10Speaker 3: You can either stand up or you can slide. And
- 44:13Speaker 3: by sliding you're laying down. You're trying to make yourself
- 44:15Speaker 3: big negate the pass that's coming across. The issue with that,
- 44:19Speaker 3: with the Gaverkov one is when the ford is staring
- 44:21Speaker 3: directly at you. Because in the NHL nowadays, players are good,
- 44:26Speaker 3: players are skilled, players, have their head up. Gone are
- 44:28Speaker 3: the times of guys chopping onions coming down the ice
- 44:31Speaker 3: like me. They can barely stick handle. Everybody can stick handle.
- 44:34Speaker 3: So you're just taking yourself out of the plane. You're
- 44:36Speaker 3: leaving more holes than you're taking away. So what I
- 44:39Speaker 3: want guys to do is stand up. You have to
- 44:42Speaker 3: use one hand on your stick, fake it a little bit,
- 44:44Speaker 3: try to make the guy think, and then take away
- 44:47Speaker 3: the pass as much as possible, but guys are just
- 44:49Speaker 3: diving right away. They slide immediately. They either get you
- 44:54Speaker 3: saw it with Gaverkov sliding. Michael Bunting just pulls it
- 44:57Speaker 3: to his backhand, slides it across the crease, and Darcy
- 45:00Speaker 3: Kemper it goes right through his legs because he's thinking
- 45:04Speaker 3: that the past is getting across. But there's a little
- 45:06Speaker 3: bounce of funny bounces and that, and then tonight to
- 45:07Speaker 3: Brincat scores because Patrick Kane, you're sliding against Patrick Kane.
- 45:11Speaker 3: He's just literally gonna sauce it over you and it's
- 45:14Speaker 3: gonna be a tap into the back of your net.
- 45:16Speaker 3: So I just think more issues come from it than
- 45:19Speaker 3: actual good things. And every coach seems to be teaching
- 45:23Speaker 3: guys slide now, and I can't stand it. Stop sliding.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Kenny Albert's five hundredth national.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Kenny Albert, he's a neo.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Baby, but he's a very hard workers.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Like those guys, he goes the other way. Most guys Goby,
- 45:37Speaker 2: they go, I'm gonna mail it in and not do much.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Kenny goes the other way. No, you think I just
- 45:40Speaker 1: got this job because of Marv. I'll do every goddamn
- 45:42Speaker 1: sport possible.
- 45:43Speaker 2: I'll do it well. Props to Kenny Albert.
- 45:45Speaker 3: What do you think of nepotism? Props to Kenny al
- 45:48Speaker 3: Props to Kenny Albert. By the way, I've you know,
- 45:50Speaker 3: I've seen how the sausage is made on the color
- 45:52Speaker 3: commentary side on TV and radio recently, and I mean
- 45:56Speaker 3: it's not the it's not the spectacle it is without
- 46:01Speaker 3: those guys, uh and girls that do it. You know.
- 46:04Speaker 3: They they do such a fantastic job, and it is
- 46:08Speaker 3: such a difficult job and so much prep, and they
- 46:11Speaker 3: are as important integral intent, integral, integral you easy pike.
- 46:18Speaker 3: They're as integral to like a team winning as anybody
- 46:20Speaker 3: and they feel as much a part of the team
- 46:22Speaker 3: as any of the players. So kudos to Kenny Albert.
- 46:26Speaker 3: Round of clicks.
- 46:28Speaker 2: I like that.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Clicks, round and clicks.
