- 0:00What's up guys? Welcome back to three up three
- 0:02down. As always, I am your host
- 0:04Jackson McNeil live from the Charlie Marlow channel here on
- 0:08YouTube. You can also find me on TikTok.
- 0:10JB MDM2 just finishing up another football Sunday and
- 0:15football Saturday. My football teams both won well
- 0:19officiated fair games. That's all I have to say about
- 0:24football. Let's talk baseball.
- 0:27Not a great weekend for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 0:29I would say I was holding out hope, but the season is actually
- 0:34over. I know I've kind of been doing
- 0:35this bit with you guys since like mid-May, but I really
- 0:38actually think it's time to call it quits.
- 0:42Not on watching lots of things to change going forward.
- 0:46We got lots we can get into. We're going to talk, you know,
- 0:49going forward this next month. We can talk young guys, prospect
- 0:52rings, fall league. We might even talk football TBD.
- 0:58But right now we got to visit the series in Toronto.
- 1:01But we're going to finish with a nice sentimental look back at a
- 1:04great former Cardinal. Our first down is hitting with
- 1:09runners in scoring position. I, I, so I'll admit I was
- 1:13traveling Friday. I missed the game.
- 1:15I, I, I looked at the box score, watched the condensed game, 2
- 1:19for 19 with runners in scoring position.
- 1:21I actually didn't think it was possible to go 2 for 19 with
- 1:25runners in scoring position. And then yesterday over three,
- 1:28today over 5, It does not make sense how this team is that bad
- 1:32hitting with runners in scoring position.
- 1:34I just do not get it. I, it just doesn't compute it.
- 1:40It doesn't make any sense. They are so much worse with
- 1:42runners in scoring position than they are without.
- 1:45That said, we are going to come back to that.
- 1:48But that was our first down runners in scoring position.
- 1:50Our second down, Kyle Gibson, like I've been telling you guys
- 1:52for weeks now, it's like every time you're kind of like, man,
- 1:55that option, I think we got to pick it up.
- 1:57He kind of goes out and lays an egg.
- 1:59I, you know, the game in Toronto.
- 2:01It's hard to totally blame him because our next down, Pedro
- 2:05Pajes dropped a ball that absolutely should have been
- 2:08caught. I think Wynn rushed the throw a
- 2:10little bit. He rushed the throw a little bit
- 2:12and he skipped it, but it was very playable and Pajes just
- 2:16couldn't find the ball. He had like 6 steps.
- 2:20I I just don't understand the point of him playing.
- 2:23I'm sorry, I don't get it. I know that the guys say that
- 2:26he's a good receiver and all that, but he can't hit and he
- 2:31can't catch and he can't throw guys out on the bases, which all
- 2:35three of those things are things that this team has a problem
- 2:38with. I talked about it last week, I'm
- 2:41talking about it this week. It's got to be Contreras and
- 2:43Herrera next year. I they cannot and they better
- 2:46not carry 3 catchers. They have got to find a way to
- 2:49get, you know, more value somewhere else on the roster by
- 2:52third or fourth down. I guess we kind of dare doing 4
- 2:55downs and three downs today. Riley O'Brien.
- 2:58I, I just, I don't, I don't know what they see in this guy.
- 3:01They DFA Armstrong, who they traded a first round pick for
- 3:06Dylan Carlson. Now I, I think Carlson
- 3:08absolutely needed a change of scenery at that point.
- 3:11It wasn't working. He wasn't playing, he wasn't
- 3:14hitting better than any other outfielder on the roster.
- 3:16So I don't, I don't really fault the Carlson for doing it.
- 3:18But then they they get to September 1st and they just let
- 3:21Armstrong go for nothing so they can get a look at O'Brien.
- 3:24And he hadn't pitched in a week. He goes out two innings, 2
- 3:29earned, 4 hits. I like, where is his ER as 11?
- 3:32And I know he hasn't pitched a ton, but I don't think he's had
- 3:35a scoreless outing yet. And yeah, he's got good stuff.
- 3:37But dude, you got to get guys out, man.
- 3:40It's not, it's not like it's not rocket science.
- 3:45But yeah, anyway, let let's get into the UPS.
- 3:48We're going to finish with a sentimental note, but let's
- 3:51start with Matthew Libertar. This is a guy who Friday night
- 3:55goes 3 innings, 3 scoreless innings and gets them into
- 3:59extras and they can't get him a run, which is brutal.
- 4:01He needs to be a starter. I, I don't know what the deal is
- 4:05with, you know, and to be fair, to be fair to the Cardinals,
- 4:08Matthew Libertar has not performed very well as a
- 4:10starter. I think he had that one great
- 4:12start against Tampa last year where he, he, I think he gave
- 4:15him 8 scoreless, you know, but, but besides that, Matthew
- 4:19Libertar is not, has not given them a reason to be like this
- 4:22guy needs to be a starter. But the stuff plays and the
- 4:25stuff plays deep in the games. He's got 4 pitches.
- 4:28I, I just think they need to find a way.
- 4:29They need to, they need to, whatever they need to do this
- 4:32offseason with him. He needs to do with his guys.
- 4:35You know, he needs to be a starter.
- 4:37The stuff plays too well. I, I used to feel the same way
- 4:40about Ryan Helsley like 3 or 4 years ago.
- 4:42But clearly he, he needs to just be on the mound in any capacity.
- 4:46He is. So that's fine, but Libertar
- 4:50needs to be a starter. They gave up real stuff for him
- 4:52and he has been a very valuable reliever this year, even though
- 4:55they have yanked him all over the place.
- 4:57He spot starts, he throws 3 innings, he gets left.
- 5:00He's only, you know, it's, it's a weird role for him.
- 5:02I want he needs an established role.
- 5:04And I think next year I'll I'll be really curious to see how
- 5:08they treat him in the spring because they always bring like
- 5:09two or three guys to camp that they're like, like, you know,
- 5:12are going to be relievers. Zach Thompson's been in that
- 5:14role. Libertar has been in that role,
- 5:16but they, they, they're like you're a starter dude and then
- 5:18you they get like one start and then they immediately just go
- 5:22into the reliever program. So I really hope he can, he's
- 5:25able to add strength, do what he needs to do physically to become
- 5:29a starter because the stuff plays And I, I just think having
- 5:32him in the pen is, I don't want to say the waste because it's
- 5:34not there's value there, but the stuff is starter stuff.
- 5:39My second up Tommy Edmond Dodger, Tommy Edmond.
- 5:42I'm really happy for Tommy. Last three seasons 212223 Tommy
- 5:46averaged 150 games. 2022 Tommy Edmond and all my Immaculate
- 5:50grid players will know this was a six WAR player.
- 5:54He was awesome. He's had 30 steals twice this
- 5:57year for the Dodgers. He's hitting over 300.
- 5:59He's got 5 homers in just 25 games.
- 6:02He's OPS ING over 800. You know this is a guy that can
- 6:04play all over the field. He's a Gold Glover at second
- 6:06base. He should have won a Gold Glove
- 6:07in 20/22. He was hurt by the fact that
- 6:10they were yanking him all over the diamond.
- 6:12But I'm really happy to see him playing well.
- 6:14That is a guy that is just like, he's a really good dude.
- 6:16I thought he got dealt a little bit of a raw hand.
- 6:18I still don't totally understand what happened with his wrist
- 6:22this year. Clearly, there was, you know,
- 6:25the team didn't say that he had surgery and they said it was
- 6:28super minor. And then you've got reporters
- 6:30saying the scar is the length of his forearm.
- 6:33So I'm not a doctor. My orthopedic friends weigh in
- 6:36below. What do you guys think happened?
- 6:37Do you need that long of a cut anyway?
- 6:41I'm happy for him. I'm glad he's playing for a
- 6:43winner. He's a winning player.
- 6:44I do. I think his injury and the
- 6:47setbacks are really, I think the ankle is actually the only
- 6:49reason he didn't stay in Saint Louis.
- 6:51I I really think he would still be a Cardinal if he hadn't
- 6:54sprained his ankle when he's rehabbing The rest My third up
- 6:58Matt Adams Big City, Slippery Rock University, one of the gems
- 7:04in the 2009 draft, which you guys will remember Shelby Kelly
- 7:07Rosenthal, Adams Carpenter, the one of the greatest drafts of
- 7:11all time. Jeff Luno retired.
- 7:15He's retiring a Cardinal. I think that's really cool.
- 7:18This is a guy that moved to Saint Louis, lives in Saint
- 7:22Louis to this day, got himself a bring in 2019 with the
- 7:25Nationals, had two really solid years with the Cardinals before
- 7:29his body kind of started to give out on him and they kind of
- 7:33wanted him to play the outfield sort of but that you know, that
- 7:36his playing time was super weird.
- 7:37But this is a guy that was a huge piece.
- 7:40He had two massive home runs in the playoffs.
- 7:42I would argue that. So he had the one off Melanson
- 7:45in the 2013 NLDS game five that clinched the game.
- 7:48It was over. Melanson hadn't given an Homer
- 7:50to a lefty in like 3 months at that point.
- 7:52I mean, left, he owned lefties and and City hit that ball to
- 7:56the moon in the bottom of the eighth.
- 7:57And then obviously, which I think this is probably the last
- 8:01truly great moment for Cardinals fans that the 2019 run
- 8:05notwithstanding, this is probably the last truly great
- 8:08playoff moment was that Homer he hit off Kershaw to basically
- 8:12clinch the NLDS in 2014. I mean, Kershaw had I think in
- 8:16his life has now given up three homers on his curveball to
- 8:18lefties and City has one of them.
- 8:20And obviously it's the biggest of the three.
- 8:22So I'm really happy for him. But let's dive into Matt Adams
- 8:25stats and compare them to the 2024 for Cardinals 2013.
- 8:29You guys will remember that team was dynamic offensively, ton of
- 8:32good players, peek Matt Carpenter, peek Yachty or
- 8:35Molini. You had Carlos Beltran still
- 8:37hitting really well. That team with runners in
- 8:41scoring position slashed. This is not a joke. 334 O2 463
- 8:46that is an 865 OPS with runners in scoring position.
- 8:50That's like, that's like 2022 Nolan Arenado every time there's
- 8:56a runner in scoring position. Let's talk about 2024 runners in
- 9:01scoring position overall as a team, 220-630-2335.
- 9:05That's a 637 OPS. They are 200 point.
- 9:08They were 200 points better in 2013, 2013 Matt Adams, which was
- 9:12the best year of his career by the numbers, 329-370-4553.
- 9:20That's insane. He's 300 points better than the
- 9:25Cardinals this year. They miss him.
- 9:28They miss guys like that. Winners.
- 9:31I hope they can figure out a way to get back to it.
- 9:33Thanks for watching, guys. We'll be back soon.
- 9:35We're going to start talking young guys and the future.
