- 0:00Kathie (2): I have a very interesting job.
- 0:02Kathie (2): I'm usually brought in to companies at a very specific moments.
- 0:08Kathie (2): Not when everything is clear, but when something isn't lining up.
- 0:13Kathie (2): We're gonna talk about that today because actually no one can explain why everything is not lining up.
- 0:22Kathie (2): It might be a company that's growing quickly, revenue is up, opportunities are coming in, but internally, things feel harder than they should.
- 0:33Kathie (2): Decisions are slower.
- 0:35Kathie (2): Teams are not fully aligned.
- 0:37Kathie (2): There's tension in conversations that no one is naming.
- 0:41Kathie (2): Or perhaps it's a company preparing to sell.
- 0:44Kathie (2): On paper everything looks solid, but underneath that, they know something isn't as clean as it needs to be, and they don't want that showing up in diligence.
- 0:55Kathie (2): Because trust me, it will show up in diligence.
- 1:00Kathie (2): Or perhaps they've even gone through an acquisition and the integration, it's not working the way they expected.
- 1:07Kathie (2): Roles are unclear.
- 1:08Kathie (2): Processes don't match.
- 1:10Kathie (2): People are operating differently, and there's a quiet level of frustration building across the organization.
- 1:18Kathie (2): And here's the important part, leadership doesn't always see it first.
- 1:24Kathie (2): Employees do.
- 1:26Kathie (2): They feel it in how work gets done.
- 1:29Kathie (2): What doesn't make sense, what no one is addressing, what they don't feel safe saying out loud.
- 1:37Kathie (2): I've worked inside all kinds of environments, construction and skilled trades, plumbing and field operations, oil industry, auto dealerships, and repair shops.
- 1:51Kathie (2): Shipyards, accounting firms, pharmaceutical companies.
- 1:56Kathie (2): Different industries, but the same patterns.
- 2:01Kathie (2): Because this isn't a culture problem.
- 2:04Kathie (2): It's not something you fix with a slogan or a one day initiative.
- 2:10Kathie (2): It's the way people are operating inside the system.
- 2:14Kathie (2): The dynamics, the pressure, the behaviors that develop when no one is really looking.
- 2:21Kathie (2): And one of the biggest things I see, people don't feel psychologically safe.
- 2:28Kathie (2): Not unsafe in an obvious way, but in subtle ways.
- 2:32Kathie (2): They don't speak up.
- 2:33Kathie (2): They work around issues instead of addressing them.
- 2:36Kathie (2): They adapt instead of aligning.
- 2:38Kathie (2): And over time, that impacts everything.
- 2:43Kathie (2): Performance, communication, profitability.
- 2:49Kathie (2): So let me show you what that actually looks like in real time.
- 2:53Kathie (2): Picture this I'm standing on a showroom floor sales team all around me.
- 2:57Kathie (2): Energy is high, people are moving, deals are happening, and on the surface, everything looks fine.
- 3:04Kathie (2): But I start talking to a few of the team members, just casual conversation, and within a few minutes, something starts to stand out.
- 3:13Kathie (2): They figured out a way to work around the sales process, not in a malicious way.
- 3:19Kathie (2): No one woke up and said, let me break the system today.
- 3:23Kathie (2): They just adapted.
- 3:24Kathie (2): They found little gaps.
- 3:25Kathie (2): Little loopholes, ways to close faster to protect their deals and sometimes even edge out a teammate.
- 3:33Kathie (2): And over time, that became the way things were done.
- 3:37Kathie (2): Leadership had no idea because on paper sales were happening, but underneath the system wasn't working the way it was designed.
- 3:45Kathie (2): And more importantly, the people inside the system were operating in ways no one was actually seeing.
- 3:53Kathie (2): That's human behavior.
- 3:55Kathie (2): And that's where I come in.
- 3:59Kathie (2): Welcome to the Kathie Owen Perspective podcast.
- 4:02Kathie (2): My name is Kathie Owen.
- 4:04Kathie (2): This is where we talk about human patterns under pressure, what's really happening inside companies, and the invisible dynamics that impact performance, culture, and results.
- 4:16Kathie (2): I've spent over 25 years in organizations from corporate wellness to leadership environments.
- 4:24Kathie (2): And today, I help companies see what they cannot see on their own, especially in moments that matter most.
- 4:30Kathie (2): Rapid growth, mergers or acquisitions or when performance looks fine, but something isn't adding up.
- 4:40Kathie (2): What I do is called human diligence.
- 4:43Kathie (2): It's the layer inside a company that doesn't show up in reports.
- 4:47Kathie (2): But it drives everything.
- 4:51Kathie (2): Because businesses don't run on the processes alone.
- 4:55Kathie (2): They run on the people inside those processes, and people adapt always.
- 5:02Kathie (2): Here's what most leaders don't fully account for.
- 5:05Kathie (2): People will always find a way to make their environment work for them.
- 5:10Kathie (2): Not because they're bad employees, because they are human.
- 5:14Kathie (2): If a process is unclear, they will fill the gaps.
- 5:19Kathie (2): If something feels unfair they'll adjust to protect themselves.
- 5:23Kathie (2): If there's no psychological safety, they'll stop speaking up altogether.
- 5:28Kathie (2): And over time, those small adaptations become patterns.
- 5:34Kathie (2): And those patterns become culture.
- 5:37Kathie (2): So what do I do?
- 5:39Kathie (2): I go into organizations and look at those patterns directly.
- 5:44Kathie (2): I usually start with an assessment because that gives me a signal.
- 5:49Kathie (2): Where are the tensions?
- 5:51Kathie (2): Where are people holding back?
- 5:52Kathie (2): Where are things not lining up?
- 5:54Kathie (2): And then I go into the business.
- 5:57Kathie (2): Not just meetings.
- 5:58Kathie (2): The work.
- 5:59Kathie (2): I sit with people, I stand beside them.
- 6:01Kathie (2): I actually will work with them.
- 6:04Kathie (2): I ask them to show me what they're doing.
- 6:07Kathie (2): Walk me through this.
- 6:08Kathie (2): And within minutes you start to see the workarounds, the inefficiencies, the unspoken frustration, the disconnect between leadership intent, and daily execution.
- 6:21Kathie (2): Most companies don't have a performance problem.
- 6:24Kathie (2): They have a visibility problem because here's what's happening at scale.
- 6:30Kathie (2): Each department is solving for itself.
- 6:33Kathie (2): Sales is optimizing for sales.
- 6:36Kathie (2): Operations is optimizing for efficiency.
- 6:40Kathie (2): Leadership is optimizing for growth, but no one is standing in the middle and asking, is this actually working together?
- 6:49Kathie (2): So what you get is competing priorities, misaligned behaviors, systems that look good but don't function clearly.
- 6:59Kathie (2): And over time, that creates friction.
- 7:02Kathie (2): Friction costs time and time costs money.
- 7:08Kathie (2): Now, here's where my work expands in a way most people don't expect.
- 7:12Kathie (2): My background is in corporate wellness and I didn't just run programs, I built environments.
- 7:20Kathie (2): I designed corporate gyms, I ran boot camps, strength training programs, yoga.
- 7:26Kathie (2): I led wellness days and health fairs.
- 7:29Kathie (2): I brought in mental health resources and medical health resources.
- 7:35Kathie (2): I created rewards and recognition systems.
- 7:39Kathie (2): And what I learned from that is that wellness creates access.
- 7:44Kathie (2): When people are outside of formal roles.
- 7:46Kathie (2): They talk, trust me.
- 7:49Kathie (2): They talk, they share what's really going on in their world, in their lives, in their jobs.
- 7:56Kathie (2): They share what's working and what's not, what doesn't make sense.
- 8:00Kathie (2): So corporate wellness becomes a strategic layer of human diligence.
- 8:07Kathie (2): It opens doors that would otherwise stay closed.
- 8:10Kathie (2): And when you layer in rewards and recognition, now you're shaping behavior intentionally.
- 8:17Kathie (2): Because what you recognize people repeat.
- 8:21Kathie (2): You start to see higher engagement, better communication, stronger accountability, increased psychological safety, and that changes how the entire system operates.
- 8:34Kathie (2): This becomes very critical in two situations.
- 8:38Kathie (2): Mergers and acquisition because integration issues are rarely technical.
- 8:44Kathie (2): They are human.
- 8:46Kathie (2): There's misalignment, there's confusion, there's unspoken tension.
- 8:50Kathie (2): Human diligence surfaces that early.
- 8:54Kathie (2): And when a company is preparing to sell, this is one of the most valuable things you can do because buyers don't just evaluate numbers.
- 9:03Kathie (2): They feel operations.
- 9:05Kathie (2): And when things are clean, efficiency improves, overhead decreases, risk is lower, which directly increases enterprise value.
- 9:17Kathie (2): And here's the part I think that matters the most.
- 9:21Kathie (2): It doesn't take long to see this.
- 9:24Kathie (2): Because once you're in it, the patterns are there.
- 9:27Kathie (2): You just have to be willing to look.
- 9:30Kathie (2): So most companies are not broken.
- 9:32Kathie (2): They're operating on patterns no one has slowed down to examine.
- 9:37Kathie (2): And when you do, you don't just fix problems, you change how the business functions.
- 9:44Kathie (2): If you're listening to this and thinking, oh my gosh, I've seen this.
- 9:48Kathie (2): I felt this.
- 9:50Kathie (2): This is happening inside our company.
- 9:52Kathie (2): I've written a full blog post that goes deeper into this.
- 9:56Kathie (2): You can find that in the description and show notes below.
