- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: What's up everybody, and welcome to another episode of Scouting Defense, I am your host, who's song Patel.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: We are part of the three-yard security podcast.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're also part of the five reason sports network.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm joined by my co-host today, Coach, and Eric, gentlemen, how are we doing?
- 0:49[SPEAKER_02]: Doing well, doing well, excited to talk about a week to a camp that was actually, you know, there was actually
- 0:56[SPEAKER_02]: I know it's going to be a lot of talk about the second there, but I think there was pretty decent mix of good in there as well.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_02]: Some excited to talk about it with you guys.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, looking forward to talk to the dolphins with you guys again last week.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: I was away at Virginia Beach.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: My daughters feel like a tournament didn't get to talk to you guys last week.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: And this week I am sitting here in Miami plan on going to training camp both tomorrow and Saturday before I
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: fly back to Pennsylvania in our high school season, starts up here on Monday.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, Saturday is exclusively only members day.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: So coach, we're a glad that you weren't there.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: You'll be meeting off and maybe eat it potentially tomorrow and Saturday.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: All right guys, like the island is empty.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: Caterco looks to be out for the season.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: Javan Hall and went to the New York Giants.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: Jalen Ramsey was shipped out.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: Kendall Fuller is not a Miami dolphin.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't just a new starting group.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's an entirely different defensive identity.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: Three of Miami's top four defensive backs from last year are now gone.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_02]: I thought you were going to lead into it by asking me.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't realize.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: This was a pretty good exercise.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, oh, yeah, you know.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: We want to jump into it.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yes.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_02]: I was no one wanted to jump into it.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: I was waiting for something.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you know, it's funny because this is probably the same.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: See, there he goes.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: He says, well, you know, defensive backfield has at this point.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_02]: No, but it is a lot of, it is a lot of new faces back there.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I don't think it's necessarily the worst thing in the world.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: particularly now granted, you never want to lose a player like Kader, I think we all expect the Kader to be a really big part of what the secondary could be for for this dolphins team this year, but I look specifically at the safety room and
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's kind of where I try to find some silver lining in this situation, because I do like the group that they have there, between Minko, between if you're out to Malafonru, Ashden Davis, Elijah Campbell, you know, Patrick Morris guys like that in that group that
- 3:45[SPEAKER_02]: I just know how important it is in an Anthony Weaver defense.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_02]: If I had to pick one portion of the secondary to be weaker, it would be the corners, especially with the past rush that the dolphins could potentially put together this season.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_02]: And it looks imposing in the camp.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_02]: Not sure if that's necessarily a great thing with the dolphins offensive line.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_02]: But I think all that to say,
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: The second day isn't a bad spot.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not full blown five alarm fire panic about it just yet because I do actually like the safety room a little bit better than I did last year.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_02]: But the corners there's legitimate concern.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_02]: You brought in a couple of new guys in my Hilton and Jack Jones.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_02]: And you don't know what you have in guys like Jason Marshall and Cam Smith, you're really gonna have to hope that my kill and can be a facsimile of cater.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that they're very similar players, but it's just something that you have to see born out on the field at this point.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the the ACL loss of Canerco who like not just do lose a high energy guy, but you lose a pretty good tappler.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: One of your strongest communicators as well coach if Mike Hiltson steps in.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: Is he exclusively going to be a full-time nickel because last year.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: We saw Caterco play the nipple and then sometimes maybe three to four times a game on specific series or drives.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: We saw him rotate back to become the deep third safety.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: Can Mike Hilton do that?
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think so.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the big reason that Mike Hilton was still in the market is that Mike Hilton has a very specific role that he plays, and he plays it pretty well, right?
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: But that role that nipples corner back role, and more of a zone coverage, nickel corner that a man covers nickel corner, really limits what you can do around him, right?
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about adding all these pieces that are versatile that allow you to move around, right?
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: You bring in Minka that you
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: want to be able to put into the slot.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: You have if you melt on who who you want to be able to put into the slot sometime.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, cater who you want to put into the slot sometime, right?
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: But now with cater being out, I think the combination of Mike Hilton and Jack Jones gets us pretty close to where we were before they were here.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like those two kind of as a pair, I think to a solid job of replacing what we had in cater before they arrived.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just kind of a reset to where we were
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: when we started camp in my opinion, but the Mike Hilton part of it really limits the other stuff that you can do, right?
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: Because when you go to those five defensive back sets and Mike Hilton's on the field, you know, now you really are not going to see Jack Jones be able to flex into that slot position.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to be able to see, you know, the safety is rolling down into that nipple roll with Mike Hilton rolling back.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: cut down what you can do in terms of disguise and coverages.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: But he does a good really good job of being able to time up the snap of the ball, being able to come up both in the screen game the way that Cater did as well as run support things like that.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: But I think the biggest change in the secondary today without Cater versus what it was.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: before then is that you just lose some of that flexibility and what you had that might not be a bad thing so much because you know that Mike Hilton is going to man the slot and that's one of the toughest things to do in a defense of backfield aspect of things.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: So our young guys that are coming into play, you know, we're not hopefully going to be asking them to play on the outside, bump to the inside, probably not going to flip sides and follow receivers a ton
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that from a secondary perspective, you're going to see a more basic back end than what you might have seen before.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I've kind of encouraged, like Eric was talking about with that safety room.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know, last year, I felt like Poirbring being brought in was more about his communication and his ability to get guys in the right place and he didn't do a very good job of that or playing safety.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: but that you have a much better version of that in mecafence Patrick who is not only a far better player than any safety that we had last year, but also is that, you know, that key communicator in the secondary that's going to help to keep things in line in front of him.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, where, uh, where Mika is going to be the best guy is he's going to be someone that can play different roles and plug in different gaps where he can read the intermittent part of the field.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: He can dive and shoot right down to the crossers.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: He can play the two flat hooks.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: He can play in the short middle of the hook zones.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: Eric, it seems as if Miami will try to carry a lot of defensive backs this season and they technically have three, maybe four guys that can play safety outside of Mink of its Patrick.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Can you talk a little bit about, you know, if you're a Malafon who you also have action Davis who was also injured but it looks like he might have been saved from
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: AC is an engine injury and also, Dr. Trader Jr., we haven't seen a lot of him and can't either.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Dante Trader, I've heard some whispers that it really just seems like Mike McDaniel is kind of pacing him, I guess, because they anticipate him getting quite a bit of a workload throughout the preseason.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm not super worried about that.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_02]: If he Melafon was a guy that, I mean, if I had to pick one guy in the secondary that I'm most excited about, it's him because he's a guy that
- 10:01[SPEAKER_02]: despite the injury history, and I know we've had to say this about a million Chris Greer signings before him, but despite the injury history, there's legitimate real good NFL talent there with Melafon Wu.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: He can do quite a few things between being able to play in the box, being able to play in the slot, he's physical, and he does have a nose for the football as well.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_02]: So he's a guy that that can kind of be used as another chess piece.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think Ashton Davis is a little bit more pigeonhole into that deep third.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_02]: As a safety kind of being that center fielder at the back of your defense, and he does a pretty good job of it, mind you.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that that's an ideal fit with what you have in the safety room elsewhere.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_02]: Between Minka and Mela Fangu.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_02]: My thing overall is when it comes to this defense, I kind of like the idea of having dies like Minkan, like if you that can come up and play a little bit more in that first, you know, in that short to intermediate area, because I think that's where teams are going to have to beat the dolphins.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_02]: in an at least in an ideal world and an ideal world where the dolphins are healthy up front in their front seven.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: I think in most cases long developing, you know, deep shots down field probably aren't going to be what hurts Miami just off of the narrative.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_02]: I think the past, which is going to be able to get home pretty consistently before anything really long developing occurs.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: So it's going to be really important that you have guys like Minka, like if you know the phone move that in that five to ten yard range can separate guys from football at the catch point.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: And really finish those plays physically.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_01]: Coach.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: Eric mentioned that, you know, you have very physical and imposing players at the safety position.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: As we move back to the corner back position, you have guys like Stormdug, Jason Marshall Jr., Jack Jones.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: These guys aren't as physically imposing.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: They're not that fast.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: But you don't necessarily need these types of guys in the system.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_01]: You need these guys along with Mike Hilton.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: to press these players, we talked a whole lot about the dolphins trying to play a little bit more press-man coverage.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: This doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be playing cover one all the time, that they're going to be pressing all the time like back to the Bryan Flores days.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: They're just going to be pressing them so the past rush has a little bit more time with chop Robinson, J.M.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: Phillips, Riley Chub, Kenneth Grant, Zach Seeler,
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: and even Jordan Brooks to get home because it delays these routes.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: They can take a look at these routes.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: They can pattern match what the receivers might potentially be running if they press up and play some coverage.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: Do you foresee that this rag tag has a lot of dolphins fans kind of call it now, especially with this new secondary, can actually hold up their end of the bargain at least early on in this season?
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think the three of us, all C. Ashton Davis playing, is that deep center feel overall, you know, if we go back to those Brian Flores type defenses, they always had that guy that was playing back there, fifteen to twenty yards, and he was just responsible for making sure that, you know, the top didn't get blown off the defense.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: And the benefit of that is it allows those guys
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: to be more physical if you like you said us all right.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: We're not expecting them to go out there and play man coverage the way that Brian Flores had his defenses playing, but you can get up on the line.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: You can jam a receiver and you can still be playing in a zone coverage behind that and you can
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: You can be a little more aggressive with that.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you have confidence that, you know, if you do get beaten off the line of scrimmage, that it's not going to be a sixty-year touchdown pass, right?
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: If you, if you have that confidence that, you know, let's say that you try to jam that receiver to the last scrimmage and your punch misses and he runs by you.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, a player like Ash and Davis that has that long speed, you know, is taking a good angle and is living that to, you know, a twenty thirty yard cat, right, not an ideal scenario, but when you kind of weigh the risk reward of that, you know, if you can land that punch, land that gym.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: The majority of time, you're going to throw off the timing of the patterns.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: In the NFL today, I mean, look at the dolphins offense and how much that timing matters.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: If you can throw it off by a quarter or half a second off the line of the screen, you're suddenly changing the entire vision of that passing and the windows that are open the timing of those windows.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: opening.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I do think that you can take this group that we have.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: And as long as you can, you know, put a shell behind them that allows them to play with confidence.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: Then I think you can get away with it.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: If you can throw that time and off a little bit, you know, you alluded to it a little bit there at the top of the song about
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: how well the past rush has been doing in training camp.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: So if you can, you know, we know how big of a difference, a quarter of a second in a quarterbacks time to throw matters.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: If you can throw that off by a quarter of a second with that jam with the line of scrimmage, then you're giving those guys more time to get home.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: And even if they aren't getting home, you're creating more opportunities for tip passes, interceptions, those game changing type of plays, you know, just by
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: allowing the young guys to be physical to learn a strange because they have the confidence that they're being covered up behind Eric this was a defense last year who under first year at the defense corner and the new weaver towards the second half of the season was top then in most metrics except for sex and takeaways even though they did not have a lot of sex they didn't get a lot of interceptions
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: They were doing pretty decently, even though they weren't playing top teams, they weren't playing top quarterbacks besides maybe Josh Allen, pretty much that's then Aaron Rogers.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: They were playing mostly against backup quarterbacks or starting quarterbacks who were fringe on the depth chart.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna play a lot of good offenses this season outside
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: of the defensive backs in the past rush.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: I have seen a lot of this linebacker crew do really well in campus, especially the second teamers in Quentin Bell, Channing Tindall, has been plugging up runs as well, but I want to say how he doesn't pads.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: What's your thoughts on, you know, now you have a decent linebacker core in title, dot says in Jordan Brooks, and Willie Gajunier, who seems to be coming along pretty well,
- 17:33[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's the thing that I really like about what they've done in terms of the linebacker core.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_02]: where it feels like you have guys in Jordan Brooks and Tyrell Dodds and that you feel really good about starting in just and having in your your base defense and just about any situations.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_02]: But then behind them, you have guys that are really solid situational players like a Willie Gay.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, the name is escaping me.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: The guy from the neighborhood.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, great.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: Great.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's just that that situational versatility that, you know, in obvious passing downs, when you need a linebacker that's got a little bit more range and coverage, you can, you can call on a woolly gay.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: When you need a linebacker in those, when you need a run stuff, you know, maybe Tyrell Dodson comes off the field and you bring in KJ Britain, it's him and Brooks.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's just having that versatility is
- 18:37[SPEAKER_02]: something that I feel like the dolphins didn't really have.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like linebackers always been one of their thinner positions because he would you would lose a guy and then all of a sudden it's Duke Riley and Duke Riley for as good as he was his special teamer just wasn't getting the job done defensively and you would have to call upon you know chanting tindul and and
- 19:03[SPEAKER_02]: to his to your point, chanting tendrils have been performing a lot better in camp, and hopefully that carries over.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: It'd be nice to have him actually able to make an impact on the defense side of the football beyond just the special teams this season.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: But it's just, it feels like the depth this year is a lot different.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_02]: You know, last year you had Jordan Brooks, you had Tyrell Dodson towards the end of the year.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_02]: But you didn't have the players behind them that, you know, when one guy went down, you didn't really trust the position group.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_02]: And I feel like with gay with KJ Brit, you just, there's a, there's a heightened level of trust.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then like I mentioned, I just, I like the versatility that you have with your back-ups there.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's speaking of back-ups, you know, a potential injury again in the defensive back rooms.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: There might be a race for alarm and camp I saw BJ Adams get a concussion and then he fell flat right right on to the field and I was like oh Eric's boy is done for for the next week or so
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: Let's say for example, you know, God forbid, if you melafonu, he's still, you know, a potential injury risk.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's out for a couple games, campsmith, somehow again, tweaks his ankle, or his foot, Ashton Davis, it takes him longer to progress.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of concerning that they will have to rely a little bit more on UDFA's
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: like, or even rookies like Dante Trader Jr.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: and Cam Smith, BJ Adams and Isaiah Johnson.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_01]: Those guys might legitimately get some snaps early on.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: Is there a cause for concern, especially with the early part of the season coach?
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, you always have the concern of injury.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_00]: The thing is that I think that
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: The dolphins defense this year outside of the corner back room, really, because I feel like there is some depth in the safety room, you know, you still have a guy like Elijah Campbell that has come in and you play some solid snaps for you that is back there with the safety as well.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_00]: But when you look at the depth that they've built up at linebacker the way that Eric was talking about, you now have, you know, when you're getting shove and fill us back on the edge, you've got more depth there.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: same with the the interior defensive lineman you know that we drafted two guys there well three guys in there so I think that you know when you look at injuries it's usually not one position group I feel that's going to doom your team like it usually when injuries become that big thing that derails in entire season it's when you have the corner back room that we have and then
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: you lose Bradley Chub and Jalen Phillips and then you lose your second linebacker and all of that just kind of piles up.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: So absolutely, there is concern with not only the starters at the corner back position, but also the depth there, but I think at the way the rest of the defense is made up.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you have put yourself into a position where when you're only trying to cover up one position group instead of
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, three, four or five guys that should be playing special teams, then I think that you're putting yourself in a better position to have success while covering up that position group.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: All right, we'll go ahead and end it out with our prediction round.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: Eric will start it off with you.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: One surprise starter in week one.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_02]: One surprise starter week one.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_02]: In the secondary specifically, I will go with Isaiah Johnson at corner.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_02]: I think he is going to be one of the starting boundary corners, come week one.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_02]: He was a guy that impressed that camp that last year.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like he's been one of the better corners so far this season.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_02]: He's got interesting size on the outside.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_02]: So I think he's a guy that
- 23:17[SPEAKER_02]: probably descends up standing out.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_02]: I think corner's gonna be kind of a revolving door this year.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_02]: I get a lot of, twenty-nineteen nostalgia when looking at the corner back room because it's just, you don't know what it's gonna be week two week.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing yet, but I think Isaiah Johnson is gonna be one of the corners that's starting out next week one.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: Coach, one breakout defensive back that a lot of people don't foresee happening.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: a breakout defensive back that they don't see happening.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: Not a whole lot of, not a whole lot of options there, huh?
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe this is finally the year that Ethan Bonner becomes a real contributor on the field.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: CK has alluded in the three years precarious discord that he had several injuries last year that really prevented him from being able to get on to the field.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: and that that was the reason.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, maybe this is the year that he's able to avoid those injuries.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_00]: Seems like he similar to, you know, the way the cater was really liked across several coaching staffs as he was moving into the starting role.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying that Ethan Bonner's gonna develop into that number one type corner that we saw a cater being this year before the injury.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_00]: But it does seem that Ethan Bonner has gone through
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: multiple defensive coaching staffs that really seemed to like him.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_00]: And last year, probably we've had an opportunity to play significant snaps at the corner back position, you know, in two thousand twenty four, but didn't because of the injuries.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe this is the year that he's able to stay on the field and is able to show what everybody has been seeing during training camp and the coaches have seemed to like about him.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Eric, Jack Jones does he actually have a good contribution to the team, or will he become like his old self?
- 25:25[SPEAKER_02]: Man, that's, you know, I do have questions with him specifically.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, more locker room stuff.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think than anything with the guy like Jack Jones.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's on field if you were to take that stuff aside, I think it's a good gamble because he's a guy that has had production in the past.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's hard to overlook being consistency, but I think when you have a room that's as unproven as the dolphins room is right now, you take any production that you can get even if it is in the form of a guy like Jack Jones who
- 26:07[SPEAKER_02]: is going to get burned quite a bit.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_02]: But you mentioned a little bit earlier that this is a team that was lacking in takeaways.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_02]: And if there is one thing he can do, it is he will come down with the occasional interception.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_02]: I'll say that he's better than anticipated this year.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, last one coach, one name that won't be on the roster by week one.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: One name that won't be on the roster week one, let's see.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm assuming that you want a surprise here so we can't go with the obvious ones.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go with, even though I have been a long time fan, I'm going to toss Julian Hill out there.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: just because it feels like there's been a lot of reports of him struggling catching the ball at camp and really haven't heard a lot of reports of him.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, fixing some of the issues blocking that he had last year feels like Pharaoh Brown has been a little more consistent and then you have hate and root you that has been getting some, you know, pretty good camper courts as well.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_00]: So so if Julian Hill is not able to
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: hold that starting job over Pharaoh Brown and Hayden Roochies able to close that gap, then that could be a player that's on the edge of the roster there.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, look at you, Julie and Hal, everyone would be would love to hear that.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: But this question was more so geared towards the secondary.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: So one defensive.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_01]: That you won't be on the roster by week one.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: All right, defensive back.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, are any of them really going to be surprises outside of the three safeties and the two new corners?
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go, this Kendall Sheffield work, just because Kendall Sheffield seemed to be a player that you have through many camps.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: Went through that trial, earned a, earned a roster spot through the trials.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: Was somebody that was talked about a lot through many camps and was, you know, maybe viewed as a starter opposite of cater at one point, but he's gone very quiet through training camp.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: So as we get down to the fifty three, that's a player that wouldn't be surprised to see on the outs.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, then go with some of these younger guys and see what they got.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: I will say I did.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: notice Kendall Sheffield a lot he wasn't making any splash plays but he did have a couple of nice past breakups he was moving very fluidly was matching up with the routes and pattern routing really well if if it was my choice from what name that will be on the roster I could potentially see a guy like
- 29:19[SPEAKER_01]: Patrick Morris, but going to the practice squad, but one obvious thing that I have in that I just think that this player has been given enough chances and opportunity and still hasn't made anything out of it.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be campsmith.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: Chris Greer picked him up because his son had good things to say about him.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't athlete.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: South Carolina doesn't have any, you know, background issues or anything of that sort.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: He just can't take care of his body.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_01]: He does not necessarily take care of his body.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like, at South Carolina, there were reports of him not managing his foot and his ankle wool or conditioning wool.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: rookie here.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: He was struggling a little bit to learn the playbook and then he got hurt.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: Last year got hurt early on couldn't play as well.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: This year you haven't really seen anything out of it.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe things will change in the preseason.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we'll see a little bit different side of him.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we'll see him get better throughout the practices and the joint practices with the chat worse.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: I just personally haven't seen anything yet with campsmith.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: Alright folks, that is all for today.
