- 0:00Welcome to Reformed thinking. Today we are initiating a deep
- 0:04dive into the theological mechanics of your salvation, and
- 0:07we have an absolutely massive topic ahead of us.
- 0:10We're going to examine the inner workings of redemption, looking
- 0:13at the very logic of heaven. Our guide for this deep dive is
- 0:16Jonathan Edwards. He lived from seventeen O 3 to
- 0:191758, an American congregational preacher from East Windsor, CT.
- 0:23If you study American history or theology, you know you already
- 0:26know that he is widely regarded as America's greatest
- 0:29evangelical theologian, famous for his preaching during the
- 0:32Great Awakening. But today we are looking at a
- 0:34specific piece of his writing titled God's Wisdom in Christ's
- 0:38Substitution. We are going to unpack his
- 0:40analysis of Ephesians chapter 3, verse 10.
- 0:43The goal of our deep dive is to walk through the sequential
- 0:46logic. Edwards lays out a six step
- 0:48progression, demonstrating how divine wisdom accomplished what
- 0:51no created mind could have ever conceived.
- 0:53We're going to look closely at the covenantal framework, the
- 0:55necessity of substitutionary atonement, the reality of Christ
- 0:59acting as mediator, and the hypostatic union.
- 1:01This is not about passive listening.
- 1:03I mean, this is about understanding the immense weight
- 1:06of what occurred to secure your standing before a holy God.
- 1:10That is a phenomenal starting point, and I want to set the
- 1:12premise right away by looking at the staggering concept presented
- 1:15in Ephesians chapter 3, verse 10.
- 1:18The apostle Paul writes about the manifold wisdom of God being
- 1:21made known to the principalities and authorities in heavenly
- 1:24places. Now what is so mind bending here
- 1:27is the specific mechanism God uses for this education.
- 1:31The angels are not learning this wisdom by looking directly at
- 1:34the face of God, nor are they learning it by observing the
- 1:37stars or the mechanics of the universe.
- 1:39They are learning it by observing the church.
- 1:41They are looking at you. They are looking at redeemed
- 1:43humanity. So let us put this into its
- 1:46proper historical and cosmic context.
- 1:48According to Edward's timeline, for 4000 years, from the dawn of
- 1:52creation up until the historical moment of Christ's incarnation,
- 1:56these angelic beings, these massive, brilliant intellects
- 1:59have been studying God's works. They stood in the very presence
- 2:02of God. They witnessed the parting of
- 2:04the Red Sea, they saw the delivery of the moral law in
- 2:06Mount Sinai, and they observed the intricate designs of the
- 2:09cosmos. Yet in all of those 4 millennia,
- 2:12they'd never seen anything quite like the wisdom displayed in the
- 2:15salvation of fallen humanity. It was a completely
- 2:17unprecedented revelation of divine capability and intellect.
- 2:21Our deep dive today will thoroughly unpack the six
- 2:23specific steps Edwards lays out that left the angels absolutely
- 2:26astounded. That context changes everything
- 2:29about how you should view your own salvation.
- 2:32You are essentially the curriculum for the angels.
- 2:35When you realize that beings with intellects of vastly
- 2:37superior to ours are still taking notes on how God saved
- 2:40you, well, it frames your Monday morning a little differently.
- 2:44So let us move directly into the first major argument Edwards
- 2:47makes which deals with the choice of the person.
- 2:50We are talking about the specific requirements of a
- 2:52Redeemer. Edwards says that God pitched
- 2:55upon or determined his own only begotten Son.
- 2:58God's wisdom is put on display first and foremost, and choosing
- 3:01a fit person for the task. This was not a random selection.
- 3:05The plan required someone who met a highly specific set of
- 3:08criteria. The sheer difficulty of
- 3:10redeeming fallen humanity meant that virtually no one in the
- 3:13universe qualified. Edwards lists 8 distinct
- 3:16qualifications that prove why, according to Reformed theology,
- 3:19only a divine person was fit for this massive undertaking.
- 3:22I want to spend a lot of time here because understanding these
- 3:25qualifications helps you grasp the scale of your redemption.
- 3:28Let us start with the very first one.
- 3:29The Redeemer must be divine. Now, to play devil's advocate
- 3:33for a second, why could God not just use an Archangel?
- 3:36If Gabriel is sinless, why could Gabriel not be the substitute?
- 3:40That is the logical question human reasoning naturally asks.
- 3:43If we view this through the lens of the Westminster Confession,
- 3:46we understand the infinite gap between the Creator and the
- 3:49creature. The offense of sin is an
- 3:51infinite offense because it is committed against a God of
- 3:54infinite holiness and majesty. Think of it like a legal fine.
- 3:58The severity of a crime is often weighed against the authority of
- 4:00the one offended. Treason against a king carries a
- 4:03much heavier penalty than an insult directed at a peer.
- 4:07Because humanity rebelled against the infinite Creator,
- 4:10and infinite payment is required to satisfy divine justice.
- 4:13A finite creature, even a sinless Angel like Gabriel, is
- 4:17still finite. An Angel could only ever offer a
- 4:20finite payment. If an Angel tried to pay off an
- 4:23infinite debt, well, that Angel would be suffering in hell
- 4:25forever. Because a finite being can never
- 4:27finish paying an infinite sum, The math simply does not work.
- 4:31So the Redeemer absolutely must be a divine person capable of
- 4:34offering a payment of infinite value in a finite amount of
- 4:37time. And that leads directly into the
- 4:39second qualification Edwards list.
- 4:41The Redeemer must be infinitely holy.
- 4:43It's not enough to just be divine.
- 4:45The person stepping into the role of mediator must be
- 4:48entirely contrary to sin. If there were even a shadow of
- 4:51moral failure or deficiency in the Redeemer, he would need a
- 4:55Savior for himself. He could not stand as your
- 4:57federal head. I want to stop and unpack that
- 4:59term for a second. You use the phrase federal head,
- 5:02and that is a massive concept in reformed theology.
- 5:05For the person listening who might not be familiar with that
- 5:07terminology, what does covenantal headship actually
- 5:10mean in a practical sense? How does that relate to this
- 5:13requirement of infinite holiness?
- 5:15Federal headship is the idea of representation.
- 5:19Think of a political representative like an
- 5:21ambassador or a president. When the president signs a
- 5:23treaty, the entire nation is bound by that treaty.
- 5:26Even though you personally did not sign the paper, the leader
- 5:29acts on behalf of the group. In the biblical framework, all
- 5:32of humanity had a federal head in the Garden of Eden, which was
- 5:36Adam. Adam represented you under the
- 5:38covenant of works. God promised life for perfect
- 5:41obedience and death for disobedience.
- 5:43When Adam sinned, he broke the covenant, and because he was
- 5:46your representative, his failure was legally credited or imputed
- 5:50to you. You were born into a state of
- 5:52guilt and corruption because your representative failed.
- 5:56So to fix this catastrophic problem, God Institute's a new
- 5:59covenant, the Covenant of Grace, and assigns a new federal head,
- 6:02the last Adam, Jesus Christ. But for Christ to represent you
- 6:05successfully, he must possess A flawless, infinite holiness.
- 6:09He must succeed precisely where the first Adam failed.
- 6:12His perfect holiness provides the positive righteousness that
- 6:14will eventually be credited to your account.
- 6:16That makes perfect sense. So we have established the
- 6:20Redeemer has to be divine and he has to be infinitely holy to be
- 6:24a valid representative. But Edwards takes it a step
- 6:27further. It is not just about having a
- 6:29clean slate. The third qualification is
- 6:31infinite dignity and worthiness. The Redeemer needs to possess
- 6:35this infinite dignity so that he is capable of meriting infinite
- 6:39blessings for you. It is one thing to pay off a
- 6:42massive debt so that your bank account is back to zero.
- 6:44It is an entirely different thing to earn a massive fortune
- 6:47and deposit it into that account.
- 6:49The Redeemer must actually earn a positive inheritance, eternal
- 6:52life, and fellowship with the Father.
- 6:54Only a person of infinite worthiness can merit such an
- 6:57incomprehensible reward. And that naturally rolls into
- 7:00the 4th qualification, infinite Might and Wisdom.
- 7:03The sheer difficulty of the task demands someone possessing
- 7:06divine strength think about what the Redeemer is up against.
- 7:09He has to conquer death, defeat the authorities of hell, satisfy
- 7:13the unyielding demands of divine justice, and change the hardened
- 7:16hearts of rebellious creatures. If you tasked the greatest human
- 7:19military general with conquering death, they would fail.
- 7:21No human intellect or physical capability could achieve any of
- 7:25those things, let alone all of them simultaneously.
- 7:28It requires a person with a limitless capability to
- 7:31orchestrate and execute a flawless victory over cosmic
- 7:34forces. The scope of the enemies the
- 7:35Redeemer must face is staggering.
- 7:38He's not just fighting human armies.
- 7:39He's fighting spiritual authorities and the very curse
- 7:42of the law itself. But the 5th qualification,
- 7:46Edwards notes, shifts the focus from capability to relationship.
- 7:50And it is incredibly beautiful when you consider your own
- 7:52standing before God, The Redeemer must be infinitely dear
- 7:56to the Father. Christ is, as Ephesians chapter
- 7:59one, verse 6 calls Him, the Beloved.
- 8:01Why is this a strict requirement?
- 8:03Because the infinite value of the Son in the Father's eyes is
- 8:05required to balance out the massive offense of provocation
- 8:08caused by our sins. When you sin, it is a cosmic
- 8:12rebellion. The provocation against God's
- 8:14holiness is vast. It brings a righteous,
- 8:16terrifying anger. To satisfy that righteous anger
- 8:19against the rebellion, the Mediator standing in the gap
- 8:21must be someone the Father cherishes infinitely.
- 8:24The Father's love for the sun eclipses the wrath directed the
- 8:27rebellion of humanity. If God the Father did not
- 8:29infinitely love the Redeemer, the sacrifice would not hold the
- 8:32necessary way to appease the provocation of sin.
- 8:35Then we reached the 6th qualification.
- 8:37And this is where Edwards displays his brilliant
- 8:39theological logic. The Redeemer must act of his own
- 8:43absolute right. I read that phrase in the source
- 8:45material absolute right, and it felt a bit dense.
- 8:47Can we walk through an analogy to explain what Edwards means
- 8:50here? Because it seems like he is
- 8:52making a highly specific legal argument about who is allowed to
- 8:55pay a debt. Absolutely, it is a legal
- 8:57argument. Let's use an analogy regarding
- 9:00employment. If you work for a company, your
- 9:03hours on the clock belong to your employer.
- 9:05You owe them your labor by contract.
- 9:08If a Co worker falls behind on their tasks, you cannot use your
- 9:11standard working hours to do their work and claim you did
- 9:14something extra to cover for them because your boss already
- 9:16owned that time. You are bound by a contract.
- 9:19You are a subject. Now apply that to the angelic
- 9:22realm. An Angel is a subject to God.
- 9:25They owe God complete, unbroken obedience by the very nature of
- 9:28their created existence. If an Angel obeys God perfectly,
- 9:32they're only doing what is required of them.
- 9:34They generate no surplus merit. They have nothing extra in their
- 9:37account to give to you. A servant who only does what
- 9:39they are bound to do cannot merit anything for anyone else
- 9:42but the eternal Son of God. The second person of the Trinity
- 9:45is not a subject. He is coequal and Co eternal
- 9:48with the Father. He's the Creator, not the
- 9:50creature. Therefore, when he voluntarily
- 9:52decides to subject himself to the law, he is doing something
- 9:55he was not previously obligated to do.
- 9:57He owns himself because he acts of his own absolute right.
- 10:00The obedience he renders and the price he pays actually
- 10:04accumulate merit. It creates a surplus of
- 10:06righteousness that can legally be applied to you, the listener.
- 10:09That analogy of the Co worker is incredibly helpful.
- 10:12It completely shuts the door on any notion that salvation could
- 10:15be achieved by a created being, no matter how glorious they are.
- 10:19They simply do not have the legal standing to generate
- 10:22surplus merit. Let us look at the final two
- 10:24qualifications Edwards lists. The 7th is infinite mercy and
- 10:29love. We have talked about the legal
- 10:31requirements, but we have to acknowledge the horrific nature
- 10:34of the task itself. The task of redemption is
- 10:36gruesome. It involves suffering the
- 10:38undiluted wrath of God. No one else in the universe
- 10:41would ever undertake such an excruciating, agonizing task for
- 10:44a creature as unworthy and rebellious as fallen man.
- 10:47God is not saving innocent victims.
- 10:49He is saving active rebels. It requires a reservoir of mercy
- 10:53that simply does not exist in the created order.
- 10:55Finally, the 8th qualification is unchangeable, perfect truth
- 10:59and faithfulness. Why does this matter for you?
- 11:01Because your eternal destiny hangs entirely on this one
- 11:04transaction. You need to know that you can
- 11:06safely depend on the Redeemer in such a weighty matter.
- 11:08If there were any possibility of the Redeemer changing his mind,
- 11:12abandoning the mission when the suffering became too intense, or
- 11:15failing to keep his promises, your assurance of salvation
- 11:18would evaporate. You can rest confidently
- 11:20precisely because his faithfulness is perfect, steady,
- 11:23and unchangeable. When you synthesize all eight of
- 11:26those qualifications, divine nature, infinite holiness,
- 11:29infinite dignity, immense capability, being infinitely
- 11:32dear to the Father, acting of absolute right, possessing
- 11:36infinite mercy, and demonstrating unchangeable
- 11:38truth, you arrive at the inescapable conclusion that the
- 11:41only fit person in the entire universe is the eternal Son of
- 11:45God. And this leads to a massive
- 11:47theological irony, a display of divine brilliance that no
- 11:51created intellect could have ever anticipated.
- 11:54Think about the nature of the rebellion In the Garden of Eden.
- 11:57Humanity declared war on God. We aligned ourselves with the
- 12:00enemy of God. Human wisdom and even angelic
- 12:04wisdom would assume that the offended party would demand the
- 12:06absolute destruction of the rebels.
- 12:08In any human conflict. The offended king crushes the
- 12:11rebellion and executes the traitors instead.
- 12:14The very person offended by the rebellion, God himself, is the
- 12:18one who devises the plan to bear the cost for the enemies who
- 12:20wronged him. He provides the Mediator.
- 12:23No Angel observing the cosmic treason of humanity would ever
- 12:26deduce that the sovereign Creator would step down to pay
- 12:28the ransom for his own enemy. It defies all conventional logic
- 12:31of justice and retribution, establishing a new paradigm of
- 12:35grace that leaves the heavenly hosts astounded.
- 12:38It truly is a paradigm shift of cosmic proportions.
- 12:41The king pays the debt of the traitor, and that observation
- 12:45smoothly transitions our conversation from who was chosen
- 12:48to how this person was positioned in relation to
- 12:50humanity. This brings us to the second
- 12:53major progression of Edwards argument, the shock of
- 12:56substitution, or as Edwards phrases it, standing in our
- 12:59room, meaning in our place or in our stead.
- 13:02The first step was choosing the right person.
- 13:04The second step of divine wisdom is substituting this infinitely
- 13:07holy divine person into the position of guilty rebels.
- 13:11Try to visualize the reaction in the heavenly realms.
- 13:14If God had simply announced to the angels My Son will redeem
- 13:17humanity, the created intelligences would have been
- 13:20completely baffled about how he would accomplish it.
- 13:22The mechanics of it would be a total mystery.
- 13:24Then the revelation comes. The infinitely beloved Son of
- 13:27God is going to take the place of sinful humanity.
- 13:30He is going to stand as their substitute.
- 13:32The shock echoing through the heavenly authorities must have
- 13:35been palpable. They are watching the highest,
- 13:37most glorious being in existence willingly stepping into the
- 13:40lowest, most degraded position imaginable.
- 13:42To understand the mechanics of this shock, we have to look
- 13:45closely at the reformed concepts of the surety and the
- 13:48representative. We touched on federal headship
- 13:51earlier, but let us look at the legal language of a surety.
- 13:54When we say Christ acted as your surety, we are talking about
- 13:57someone who takes on the legal obligations and debts of another
- 14:01out of the covenant of works. Humanity owed God perfect
- 14:05perpetual obedience, and because we failed, we incurred an
- 14:08infinite debt of punishment due to our transgression.
- 14:11You, on your own, possess absolutely no capability to pay
- 14:14that debt. So Christ steps in as the
- 14:16surety. He becomes the legal guarantor
- 14:19of His people, representing them before the divine tribunal.
- 14:22But what does this substitution practically entail?
- 14:24It means the guilt of the Sinner is legally charged or imputed to
- 14:27him. This is the doctrine of
- 14:29imputation. He does not become inherently
- 14:31sinful. His nature remains perfectly
- 14:33holy, but the legal liability for your sin is transferred to
- 14:36his account. Imagine a Ledger book.
- 14:38Your massive infinite debt is crossed out under your name and
- 14:41written under his name. Furthermore, he is subjected to
- 14:44the exact same moral law that man was under.
- 14:47He must fulfill all of its positive commands to earn
- 14:49righteousness, and he must face all of its terrifying
- 14:53threatenings and penalties to satisfy justice.
- 14:56He stands in the direct path of the curse of the law.
- 14:58I think we often glaze over the phrase the wrath of God because
- 15:02we hear it so much in church contexts.
- 15:04But for the Eternal Son to willingly position himself to
- 15:07receive the concentrated, undiluted fury of design justice
- 15:11against sin, it is unthinkable. We are talking about the holy
- 15:14anger of the Creator poured out without restraint.
- 15:17And that unthinkable reality leads us straight into the third
- 15:20step. Edwards outlines the mystery of
- 15:22the Incarnation. We have established that the
- 15:24divine Son is the substitute, and he must face the penalties
- 15:28of the Law. But a massive logical problem
- 15:31remains. How can the eternal Jehovah, the
- 15:33creator of the universe, become a subject under the law?
- 15:36The Law was given to creatures. God is the law giver.
- 15:38How does the law giver become the law keeper?
- 15:41This is. Where we encounter the
- 15:42hypostatic Union. That sounds like a heavy
- 15:44academic phrase, but it is a central pillar of Orthodox
- 15:47Christology, heavily affirmed in the Westminster Confession, and
- 15:51essential for your salvation. The fun of God had to take on
- 15:55human nature. The Word became flesh.
- 15:58The hypostatic union means that in the one person of Jesus
- 16:01Christ there are two distinct natures, perfect deity and
- 16:04perfect humanity. The Council of Chalcedon gave us
- 16:08the framework for this, stating that these two natures are
- 16:10united without mixing together into a third thing, without
- 16:13changing into something else, without dividing into two
- 16:16separate persons, and without separating from each other.
- 16:20This brilliantly solves the logical problem that created
- 16:23wisdom could never puzzle out. By taking on a true human body
- 16:27and a reasonable soul, the Son of God could legitimately be
- 16:30born under the Law. He could stand as a true
- 16:33representative of humanity because he was truly, fully
- 16:35human. But He remained truly, fully
- 16:37divine, giving infinite value to His obedience and His suffering.
- 16:42Let us think about the implications of this for a
- 16:43moment. How does an eternally,
- 16:45unchangeably happy being, dwelling in the perpetual joy of
- 16:48the Trinity, suffer pain, thirst, betrayal, and eventually
- 16:52the Father's wrath? That is the exact question.
- 16:55If God cannot feel physical pain, how does a divine Redeemer
- 16:58suffer on a physical cross? I've heard theologians use the
- 17:01word impassable to describe God. Can we break down that term?
- 17:05What does it mean that God is impassable and how does the
- 17:08hypostatic union solve that issue?
- 17:11Impassibility means that God in His divine essence does not
- 17:15experience emotional fluctuations, suffering, or
- 17:17physical pain. He cannot be acted upon or
- 17:20harmed by outside forces. So the divine nature cannot
- 17:23suffer or die. It is impossible.
- 17:25But because the Divine Son assumed a human nature, he could
- 17:28experience the full spectrum of human suffering and the
- 17:30agonizing reality of physical death in his human nature.
- 17:34The person suffering on the cross is the infinite Son of
- 17:36God, but He is suffering according to His human nature.
- 17:40This is why the bloodshed on the cross has infinite value.
- 17:42It is not just the blood of a good man, it is the blood of the
- 17:45God man. The human nature provides the
- 17:47capacity to bleed, to feel the nails, and to die, while the
- 17:50divine nature provides the infinite worth required to
- 17:53satisfy the infinite debt we discussed earlier.
- 17:55Without the incarnation, substitution is functionally
- 17:58impossible. The sheer scale of that mystery
- 18:01is staggering, and Edwards captures it brilliantly.
- 18:04He provides this incredible list of astonishing contrast that
- 18:07display the mystery of the Incarnation.
- 18:09And I want to run through these because they highlight just how
- 18:11subversive this divine plan is. First, you have the infinite and
- 18:15unchangeable God becoming a finite, feeble man subject to
- 18:19sinless infirmities. The Creator who spoke galaxies
- 18:22into existence is now susceptible to exhaustion,
- 18:25hunger, and physical pain. He has to sleep.
- 18:28He gets thirsty. Second, the sovereign of heaven
- 18:31and earth becomes a worm of the dust.
- 18:33Edwards is referencing Psalm 22, verse six there.
- 18:36Now using the phrase worm of the dust sounds incredibly jarring
- 18:39to modern ears, but it highlights the sheer
- 18:41condescension of the sun. The one who sustains the
- 18:44universe by the word of his capability willingly occupies a
- 18:47position of utter lowliness and contempt.
- 18:49Third, the self existent original spirit is clothed in
- 18:52flesh and bore of a woman. The eternal God enters time and
- 18:55space through the womb of a creature he himself designed.
- 18:58And 4th, the independent, all sufficient God who needs
- 19:01absolutely nothing, suddenly needs food, has nowhere to lay
- 19:04his head, and relies on human charity for his daily
- 19:07maintenance. The God who owns the cattle on
- 19:101000 Hills depends on the hospitality of his followers to
- 19:12eat a meal. When you lay out those
- 19:14contrasts, you clearly see why angels will be studying this
- 19:17intensely. It contradicts every human and
- 19:20angelic assumption about how supreme authority should
- 19:22operate. If an Angel were to design A
- 19:25rescue mission, they would likely send a legion of blazing
- 19:28seraphim to eradicate the enemies of God.
- 19:31They would not send the commander of the armies of
- 19:33heaven as a helpless infant. And his incarnation naturally
- 19:37leads into the 4th step Edwards outlines which examines how this
- 19:40God man actually lived out his days on earth.
- 19:43Edwards calls this the circumstances and the business
- 19:46of Christ's life. Let us investigate the
- 19:48circumstances first. Human wisdom, particularly the
- 19:52wisdom of the scribes, the Pharisees, and the rulers whom
- 19:55the apostle Paul calls the Princess of this world in First
- 19:57Corinthians chapter 2, had a highly specific expectation for
- 20:00the Messiah. They anticipated A conquering
- 20:03king arriving with massive, visible pomp, overwhelming
- 20:06wealth, and earthly grandeur. Israel was under Roman
- 20:08occupation. They expected a political
- 20:11revolutionary who would overthrow the Romans by force
- 20:13and establish an earthly empire of unparalleled luxury and
- 20:17military dominance. But divine wisdom orchestrated
- 20:19the exact opposite. God's wisdom chose a feeding
- 20:23through in a stable for a birthplace.
- 20:26He chose an obscure working class family in a backwater
- 20:28town. He chose lifelong poverty.
- 20:32When he finally made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem,
- 20:35he did not ride a War Horse. Surrounded by a gleaming royal
- 20:38guard, he made a lowly entrance riding on a donkey.
- 20:41Isaiah 53 perfectly prophesied this, calling him a route out of
- 20:45a dry ground, someone who had no majestic beauty to attract us to
- 20:48him, a man of sorrows acquainted with grief.
- 20:51Edwards makes a striking observation here.
- 20:54By choosing these specific circumstances, Christ poured
- 20:56contempt on worldly glory. He completely discredited the
- 20:59things that human beings spend their entire lives chasing
- 21:02wealth, status, political influence, and outward prestige.
- 21:05It really makes you stop and look at your own life, does it
- 21:07not? When you find yourself obsessing
- 21:09over a promotion, the neighborhood you live in, or the
- 21:11car you drive, and then you realize the Creator of the
- 21:13universe voluntarily chase a feeding through in a borrowed
- 21:16tomb. It shifts your perspective.
- 21:18By living in such humble conditions, He teaches you to
- 21:20despise the superficial allure of worldly grandeur and
- 21:24instructs you to be lonely in heart.
- 21:26That is a sharp, necessary conviction for all of us.
- 21:29The circumstances of his life were an active repudiation of
- 21:32human pride. Now, moving from the
- 21:35circumstances of his life to the actual work and business of his
- 21:38life, we bring in the Westminster perspective on
- 21:41Christ's active obedience. This is crucial for your
- 21:44standing before God. Christ did not just come to
- 21:47earth to wait around for 33 years before going to the cross.
- 21:50He was actively working every single day.
- 21:53Theologians often distinguish between his passive obedience,
- 21:56willingly receiving the penalty of the cross, and his active
- 21:59obedience. His active obedience means he
- 22:01perfectly obeyed the moral law. He kept every commandment in
- 22:05thought, word, and deed without a single falter.
- 22:08Furthermore, he subjected himself to the ceremonial law,
- 22:11which Edwards rightly describes as a heavy yoke of bondage.
- 22:15Think about all the intricate requirements of the Old
- 22:17Testament law, the festivals, the dietary restrictions, the
- 22:20sacrificial types. Christ fulfilled every single
- 22:22requirement representing the true Israel.
- 22:25And He did all of this under immense, relentless temptation
- 22:27for the devil, overcoming the combined forces of earth and
- 22:30hell. His obedience was tested in the
- 22:32Crucible of extreme suffering. Why is that distinction between
- 22:36active and passive obedience so critical for the listener?
- 22:40If his death on the cross pays the penalty for my sin, why does
- 22:43his 33 years of perfect law keeping matter to me personally?
- 22:48It matters because of the requirements of the courtroom.
- 22:51If a judge pardons a criminal, that criminal is no longer going
- 22:54to prison. Their debt to society is
- 22:56canceled. But that pardon does not
- 22:58automatically make them a celebrated citizen who deserves
- 23:01a massive financial reward from the state.
- 23:03It just means they are not guilty.
- 23:05If Christ only offered passive obedience by dying on the cross,
- 23:08your sins would be wiped away. You would have a blank slate.
- 23:11You would be innocent. But innocence is not the same
- 23:13thing as positive righteousness. The Covenant of Works demanded
- 23:16perfect obedience to earn eternal life.
- 23:19By living a life of perfect act of obedience, Christ earned the
- 23:22reward and through imputation that perfect record of law
- 23:25keeping is credited to you. You do not just get a cleared
- 23:28criminal record, you get the resume of the Son of God.
- 23:31Without His perfect life, you would not have the robe of
- 23:33perfect righteousness required to enter heaven and receive the
- 23:36inheritance. That act of obedience is the
- 23:39bedrock of our justification. It is an amazing reality to
- 23:42grasp. I also want to look at Christ's
- 23:44role as prophet and teacher during his earthly ministry
- 23:48because Edwards highlights this as part of his earthly business.
- 23:51Edwards points out that because Christ is a divine person, He's
- 23:54the very word of God from all eternity.
- 23:57His teachings carry supreme, unrivaled weight.
- 24:00When the prophets of the Old Testament spoke, they said, thus
- 24:03says the Lord, they were messengers delivering mail.
- 24:06But when Jesus taught, he said, truly, truly.
- 24:08I say to you, he spoke on his own inherent authority.
- 24:12But there is a deeply pastoral application here that Edwards
- 24:14draws out. Why did God ordain that the very
- 24:17person who would suffer and die for you would also be your
- 24:20primary prophet and teacher? Edwards argues that his
- 24:23instructions are endeared and sweetened to you specifically
- 24:25because of how much he suffered for you.
- 24:28Human nature dictates that we eagerly listen to and obey those
- 24:30who have proven their immense love for us.
- 24:33When you read the commands of Christ in the Gospels, you are
- 24:35not reading the cold dictates of a distant tyrant.
- 24:37You are reading the instruction of the Mediator who allowed his
- 24:40body to be broken to save your life.
- 24:42That reality changes how you receive His teaching.
- 24:45It changes your entire posture toward his commands.
- 24:49You move from begrudging compliance to joyful submission.
- 24:53You recognize that the one giving the orders loves you
- 24:55enough to die for you. And that submission brings us to
- 24:58the climax of Edwards progression in the 5th step, the
- 25:01Great Reversal which is the death of Christ.
- 25:04Edwards asserts with absolute certainty that no human or
- 25:07angelic wisdom would have ever devised this method of
- 25:10salvation. The cross is the ultimate
- 25:13stumbling block to human reasoning.
- 25:15The Apostle Paul talks about this in his letters.
- 25:18The cross is foolishness to the Greeks and a stumbling block to
- 25:21the Jews. The idea that the salvation of
- 25:23the cosmos would be achieved through the brutal, humiliating
- 25:26execution of the Incarnate God is staggering.
- 25:29Let us walk through the astonishing paradoxes of the
- 25:31crucifixion as Edwards lays them out, marveling at the sheer
- 25:34scale of the contrasts. First, consider the courtroom
- 25:37scene. You have the Supreme Lord and
- 25:39Judge of the universe, the one who will eventually judge the
- 25:42living and the dead willingly being arraigned and condemned to
- 25:44the judgement seat of mortal men.
- 25:46Pilot, a corrupt, cowardly Roman governor, sits in judgement over
- 25:50the Author of truth. The paradox is only intensify
- 25:52from there. You have the fountain of life,
- 25:55the one who breathed the breath of life into Adam in the garden,
- 25:58actively being put to death by his own creatures.
- 26:01The sheer audacity of the creation executing the Creator
- 26:03is terrifying. Then you see the object of
- 26:06angelic adoration, the person whom Seraphim cover their faces
- 26:09to worship, crying, holy, holy, holy, being mocked, beaten and
- 26:12spit upon by the vilest, mostly depraved men.
- 26:15You have infinite good and pure love, suffering the absolute
- 26:17greatest cruelty human minds could invent.
- 26:20The Romans perfected the art of agonizing death, maximizing
- 26:23physical and psychological torment, and they unleashed it
- 26:26on the Prince of Peace. And beyond the physical agony,
- 26:28we reached the deepest theological paradox, the core of
- 26:31substitutionary atonement. The infinitely Beloved of the
- 26:35Father, the Son who had enjoyed unbroken perfect fellowship with
- 26:38the Father from all eternity, is suddenly placed under the
- 26:41inexpressible anguish of the Father's wrath.
- 26:44As Christ hung on the cross, the sky went dark.
- 26:48He became the lightning rod for the divine fury against the sins
- 26:50of all His elect. The Father turned his face away,
- 26:54breaking that sense of fellowship, leading to that
- 26:56horrific cry. My God, my God, why have you
- 26:58forsaken me? He experienced the equivalent of
- 27:01hell in those hours on the cross.
- 27:03Finally, the sequence concludes with the King, whose throne is
- 27:05heaven and whose foot school of the earth being wrapped in
- 27:08burial linens and locked in the prison of the grave.
- 27:11The Author of Life lies dead in a tomb.
- 27:13When you survey that entire sequence of events, human logic
- 27:16recoils. How can defeat be a victory?
- 27:19But Edwards, looking through the lens of Reformed theology,
- 27:21reflects on how this sequence of events is neither unsuitable nor
- 27:25dishonorable to Christ. Rather, it is the absolute apex
- 27:28of divine wisdom. The cross is where the
- 27:31inflexible demands of God's justice and the immeasurable
- 27:34depths of God's mercy perfectly intersect.
- 27:37Sin is punished entirely, and the Sinner is saved entirely.
- 27:41The cross is the masterpiece of God's wisdom.
- 27:43It is the only place in the universe where justice and mercy
- 27:46meet without compromising either attribute.
- 27:49God remains just, and he becomes the justifier of the one who has
- 27:52faith in Jesus. And yet the story does not end
- 27:55in the tomb. Which brings us to the 6th and
- 27:57final step of Edward's progression, the logic of
- 28:00exaltation. The final step to procure and
- 28:03apply salvation is Christ's exaltation.
- 28:06He is raised from the dead, He ascends into heaven, and he
- 28:09takes a seat at the right hand of the Father.
- 28:11Edwards explains the brilliant logic behind this necessity.
- 28:15The same person who purchased salvation must be the one to
- 28:17bestow it. God the Father will only
- 28:19transact with fallen humanity through a mediator.
- 28:22Because humanity broke the covenant of works, we forfeited
- 28:25any right to direct unmediated fellowship with God.
- 28:29Any interaction with the Holy God outside of a Mediator would
- 28:31result built in our instant destruction, like a moth flying
- 28:34into a blast furnace. Therefore, the Mediator who
- 28:37secured the covenant promises through his blood must be the
- 28:40administrator of those promises. This logic provides immense,
- 28:44unshakable comfort to the Saints.
- 28:46Consider what this means for you personally.
- 28:48The absolute Disposer of all things, the Supreme Governor of
- 28:52the world, who currently sits the right Hand of the Father
- 28:54orchestrating human history, is the exact same person who
- 28:57willingly shed his blood for you.
- 29:00The final judge of all intelligent beings, the one who
- 29:03will evaluate your life, is your defense attorney who has already
- 29:06paid your penalty. You do not need to fear the
- 29:09judgement seat, because the judge is the very one who
- 29:12justified you. He's not going to condemn the
- 29:14person he died to save. Edwards reiterates the final
- 29:17wonder of this logic. The servant who died as a
- 29:20criminal, a malefactor strung up on a Roman cross outside the
- 29:23city gates, is now the sovereign Lord of heaven and earth.
- 29:26Every knee will bow to him. And crucially, as Edwards notes,
- 29:30this governing authority is given to him not just as God,
- 29:33but as the God man. This is a vital point and
- 29:35Reformed Christology that we cannot miss.
- 29:37Let us unpack that specifically. When we say He governs as the
- 29:41God man, we are saying he did not leave his human body behind
- 29:44in the clouds, right? Profusely, Christ did not shed
- 29:46his human nature when He ascended.
- 29:48He did not revert to simply being a localized spirit.
- 29:51Right now, there is a glorified physical human body sitting on
- 29:54the throne of the universe. The authority he wields is
- 29:57wielded by the God man. The book of Hebrews makes much
- 29:59of this, explaining that because he retains his human nature, he
- 30:02professionally sympathizes with our weaknesses.
- 30:05He knows what it is like to be tempted to be exhausted and to
- 30:08suffer. He governs the cosmos with
- 30:10infinite divine authority, but he administers that authority
- 30:13with true human sympathy. The incarnation is permanent.
- 30:16That is an incredible reality to grasp.
- 30:19There is a man on the throne of the universe and he knows your
- 30:21name. As we move toward the end of our
- 30:24discussion and synthesize these 6 steps, we can clearly see the
- 30:27awe inspiring logic of the atonement Edwards has laid out.
- 30:31It is an airtight progression of divine wisdom.
- 30:34We started with the choice of a divine, infinitely wordy person
- 30:37who met 8 impossible qualifications.
- 30:41We moved to the shock of him becoming our substitute, taking
- 30:44on the legal debts of active rebels.
- 30:46We marvelled at the mystery of the Incarnation, the hypostatic
- 30:49union that allowed the Lawgiver to become the law keeper.
- 30:51We examine the subversive nature of his humble life and his act
- 30:54of obedience to the moral law. We stared at the agonizing
- 30:57paradoxes of his substitutionary death on the cross, where the
- 31:00beloved face the wrath of the Father.
- 31:03And finally, we rejoiced in his exaltation where the God Man now
- 31:06rules as mediator and judge. When you trace that entire
- 31:09progression, you are brought right back to our original
- 31:11premise. Angels learning from the Church.
- 31:13The heavenly hosts watch this six step masterpiece unfold and
- 31:17they see a display of divine intellect, justice and mercy
- 31:21that outshines everything they had witnessed in the previous
- 31:244000 years of creation. Synthesizing all of this leaves
- 31:27us with a necessary reflection. I want to leave you with a final
- 31:31thought to Mull over something to consider long after this deep
- 31:34dive concludes. We have established that the
- 31:37angelic beings, with their vast intellects, their unclouded
- 31:40vision of reality, and their millennia of observing the
- 31:43cosmos, are still continually stunned and educated by the
- 31:47mechanics of your salvation. They look at your redemption and
- 31:50are staggered by the wisdom of God.
- 31:53If that is true for them, how might that shift the way you
- 31:55view your own daily standing as a participant in this divine
- 31:58courtroom drama? If the angels were captivated by
- 32:01the grace applied to your life, how can you ever allow yourself
- 32:04to become numb to the reality of the gospel you're standing
- 32:07before? God is not a mundane theological
- 32:09fact. It is the focal point of cosmic
- 32:11wonder. That is a phenomenal question to
- 32:14carry with you. If angels are still marveling at
- 32:16it, we have no excuse to be bored by it.
- 32:18Thank you for joining us on this deep dive into the massive logic
- 32:21of redemption guided by the sharp mind of Jonathan Edwards.
- 32:25We hope this has expanded your view of the Mediator and
- 32:27deepened your gratitude for the lengths to which divine wisdom
- 32:30to secure your salvation. Until next time, keep your eyes
- 32:33on the text and your mind engaged.
- 32:35Thank you for listening to Reformed Thinking.
