- 0:15Ryan: Four.
- 0:17Jon: He, no, I think Teen Wolf was like 84, 85 ish.
- 0:21Ryan: Four.
- 0:22Kearns: I mean, I hate that I have to ask this question.
- 0:24It just shows how my mental degradation is getting bad.
- 0:27But that was Michael J. Fox, wasn't it?
- 0:30Jon: It was,
- 0:30Ryan: was
- 0:31Kearns: God.
- 0:32Ryan: Patrick
- 0:32Jon: yeah.
- 0:33He was smart enough to get out of sequels.
- 0:35Ryan: in the
- 0:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 0:37Ryan: Was it pa?
- 0:38Jon: Bateman,
- 0:39Ryan: Jason
- 0:40Jon: Psycho.
- 0:40Ryan: Bateman,
- 0:41Kearns: Geez,
- 0:42Jon: That would be an interesting movie.
- 0:44American Psycho Meets Teen Wolf Two.
- 0:47Kearns: he's a
- 0:47Jon: if I re,
- 0:48Kearns: court.
- 0:49Jon: if I remember right, teen Wolf Two isn't the number two either.
- 0:52I think it's TOO.
- 0:54Ryan: Teen Wolf
- 0:57in
- 0:58Jon: Teen Wolf.
- 0:58Wolf as well
- 1:00Kearns: a Teen Wolf adjacent movie.
- 1:02But tonight we are talking about Howling.
- 1:07Jon: ing.
- 1:08Kearns: Was it the first major werewolf movie of the 1980s?
- 1:12It's got a year and a half or so before it.
- 1:14Ryan: 1981 is when the Howling came out.
- 1:17And then we have American Werewolf coming out the same
- 1:21Kearns: About a year,
- 1:22Ryan: August 21st.
- 1:23So I think The Howling was the first that year.
- 1:25'cause I think Wolfen comes out in between those two
- 1:28Jon: Yeah, I think The Howling came, I think it's kind of like one of those,
- 1:32Armageddon Deep Impact situations where they're making the same movie at the
- 1:37same time, but one of them's done first.
- 1:40Ryan: and
- 1:41Kearns: And that was a wild one too, Did Armageddon blow the pants out or the, the
- 1:47Jon: Yeah.
- 1:47Kearns: of
- 1:47Jon: Yeah.
- 1:48Kearns: too?
- 1:48Jon: know what, if you watch him today, I think Deep Impact's the better movie.
- 1:53Kearns: Oh, it definitely is.
- 1:55Armageddons got the comic relief though.
- 1:57Jon: Yeah.
- 1:57And Armageddon has the preposterousness of.
- 2:01These astronauts can learn how to do space stuff, but we can't teach
- 2:05them how to drill, but we can teach these drillers how to be astronauts.
- 2:11Kearns: You know what?
- 2:12I might change my opinion actually because it's got the obligatory 1990s
- 2:16loose Cannon Steve Buscemi character
- 2:18Jon: Uhhuh.
- 2:19Kearns: and uh, like con air and stuff.
- 2:21And I need that in my life.
- 2:22So I might actually say that gives an Armageddon the Edge.
- 2:25Jon: I think Armageddon is probably the more fun movie.
- 2:28you get Ben Affleck on l Tyler's belly with the animal cracker and
- 2:33Kearns: entire theater was laughing at that scene.
- 2:35Jon: yeah, it's ridiculous.
- 2:37And then they're all singing, leaving on a jet plane
- 2:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:43Jon: and you get, Michael Clark Duncan's super deep voice coming in.
- 2:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:50One of the best scenes with him is in that movie, the Island, when he
- 2:53realizes they're like harvesting their livers and stuff and he runs
- 2:56outta the hospital and he just starts hit sticking people outta the way.
- 3:01It's a great scene, but yeah, we're doing the howling tonight.
- 3:04Everybody Back to it.
- 3:06John, do you have a blind rank or, or something for us?
- 3:10Jon: or fake for you guys tonight,
- 3:12Ryan: fake.
- 3:12Okay.
- 3:13Kearns: fake?
- 3:14Ryan: What
- 3:14Jon: or fake.
- 3:15Ryan: did good last time?
- 3:17Jon: And it is.
- 3:18Kearns: They
- 3:18Jon: It is
- 3:19Kearns: dumb.
- 3:19Ryan: We did good.
- 3:20Jon: real or fake.
- 3:22Werewolf movies
- 3:24Ryan: Let's
- 3:25Kearns: Okay, I'm
- 3:25Jon: and I made sure that the real ones are obscure enough
- 3:29that you're not gonna know.
- 3:31Ryan: Oh man.
- 3:31Okay.
- 3:32Jon: Alright,
- 3:33Kearns: are they though?
- 3:33I'm actually pretty good with werewolf stuff.
- 3:35Jon: movie number one.
- 3:37Now we'll see Helen Keller versus Night Wolves.
- 3:44The true story of how Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing
- 3:51Kearns: The truth that, she was whole before the night wolves,
- 3:54Jon: before the night wolves.
- 3:56Yep.
- 3:57Kearns: I have to say real, because I, in my heart, I need it to be real,
- 4:01but if it's not real, that means you made that up and I'm so proud.
- 4:04Ryan: I am gonna go real too.
- 4:05Kearns: I
- 4:05Ryan: on the wagon with currents on this one 'cause that's sounds too
- 4:09Jon: that is 100% a real werewolf movie.
- 4:13Kearns: If you made that up, we would need a urine sample from you to see
- 4:16what drugs it took to make that up.
- 4:17Ryan: that's gotta go on the list either at the end of this year or next year.
- 4:22Jon: God, it's so, so bad.
- 4:24It almost has to be, when we're up and running with Patreon, we
- 4:28can't get, we can't put that out.
- 4:32Kearns: That's
- 4:32Jon: can't do it.
- 4:34movie number two.
- 4:35Moonlit veins.
- 4:38A lovelorn poet must choose between his love for a woman and the
- 4:43curse that has made him immortal.
- 4:48Kearns: How do they spell vain?
- 4:51Jon: V-E-I-N-S.
- 4:53Kearns: Um, okay.
- 4:55Ryan: Fake
- 4:55Kearns: Okay.
- 4:58Yeah.
- 4:58I don't trust his face either.
- 5:00I'm going fake as well.
- 5:01Jon: That is fake
- 5:03Ryan: all.
- 5:03Kearns: I thought you were gonna do it like a weather vein.
- 5:05I knew you know how to spell, obviously, but I was like, I'm gonna
- 5:08see if this throws him a little bit.
- 5:09Ryan: We
- 5:10Jon: movie.
- 5:10Kearns: him Riot.
- 5:11Jon: Movie three.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:13You think you got me?
- 5:16Grandma Werewolf.
- 5:19A family's Thanksgiving tradition is rocked by a
- 5:22stunning revelation by grandma.
- 5:25She's a werewolf.
- 5:29Kearns: Nice little twist in the little Red Riding Hood.
- 5:30Uh,
- 5:31Ryan: I like
- 5:31Kearns: Lord.
- 5:32Yeah.
- 5:32Ryan: She was always the wolf
- 5:34Kearns: Be you some pompous film major was like sniffing his own farts.
- 5:37Like, you know what we'll do, man.
- 5:38was the grand the whole time, man.
- 5:41Ryan: and.
- 5:42Kearns: What do you think, Ryan?
- 5:43Ryan: I'm gonna go fake with this one.
- 5:45I want it to be real,
- 5:46Kearns: I'm gonna go real, I'm gonna go real.
- 5:50Jon: It is real.
- 5:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 5:52telling you.
- 5:53I felt that film, major vibe.
- 5:54I know that this is, that that's actually triggering maybe for you.
- 5:57I didn't even think of that.
- 5:58I'm sorry.
- 5:59Because Ryan was a film major.
- 6:02Ryan: yes,
- 6:02Kearns: Where were you not?
- 6:05So not all film majors are papa as assholes.
- 6:07We have a good one, but,
- 6:08Ryan: of that one guy
- 6:09Kearns: but no.
- 6:10Ryan: apartment.
- 6:11The train rolling by
- 6:13Kearns: Yeah.
- 6:14Ryan: the rain falling.
- 6:15He has a cigarette.
- 6:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:16Ryan: into a scene right now.
- 6:17Jon: All right, Phil, major President Werewolf.
- 6:27the president has been bitten and is running the streets of DC
- 6:32Ryan: No,
- 6:33Kearns: not too far off.
- 6:35Ryan: uh.
- 6:38Kearns: Just keep the podcast apolitical.
- 6:40Hmm.
- 6:41Ryan: this sounds so real though.
- 6:42'cause it sounds so be movie ish, something you can pick up on.
- 6:47I'm going real on this one.
- 6:50Kearns: Is it starring Gerard Butler?
- 6:53The era when it was like White House, down White House Werewolf.
- 6:58Jon: It
- 6:58Kearns: it's real.
- 6:59Ryan: It
- 6:59Jon: actually,
- 7:00Kearns: You almost gave something away.
- 7:01Dammit.
- 7:01Jon: no, I didn't.
- 7:03Kearns: Oh,
- 7:06I gotta go.
- 7:06Real
- 7:07Jon: It is real.
- 7:08Ryan: word.
- 7:09Kearns: dang.
- 7:10Jon: President Werewolf is a real werewolf movie.
- 7:14All right.
- 7:14Ryan: vibe.
- 7:16Jon: All right.
- 7:18All right, smart guys.
- 7:20Kearns: Oh, well I don't know about all that.
- 7:23Jon: Thanks for the memories on the verge of a breakup.
- 7:27A werewolf Remini is about the highs and lows of his relationship.
- 7:33This gothic love story.
- 7:36Kearns: hmm.
- 7:38Ryan: this is like, very interview with a vampire feeling.
- 7:41Kearns: This one's meant to throw us.
- 7:43We're supposed to think this one's fake, but it's actually real.
- 7:45Ryan: real, it's a, I can see them just like in a site
- 7:50writing as memoirs, flashbacks.
- 7:54Kearns: Writing.
- 7:55Memo, memo.
- 7:57Ryan, what are we doing here?
- 8:04Ryan: I will
- 8:05Kearns: move the clock.
- 8:07Jon: It is fake.
- 8:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:10Jon: You guys are on it tonight.
- 8:12Ryan: I missed the grandma one.
- 8:13Jon: Yep.
- 8:13Ryan: New York City filmmakers.
- 8:15Jon: All right,
- 8:15Ryan: not you.
- 8:16Spike
- 8:16Jon: let's throw you off a little bit.
- 8:18Next movie Bloods with a Z versus Wolves with a Z. It's a turf war between
- 8:28rival gangs, vampires, and werewolves.
- 8:32Kearns: I would bet one of my testicles that you made that up.
- 8:35That feels so much like John right there.
- 8:38I. Double fifth.
- 8:40Now,
- 8:42Jon: So what are we saying?
- 8:43Ryan: in this film?
- 8:45Kearns: this real or fake, brought to you by Polar Seltzer,
- 8:47Jon: I can't tell you if they're singing or not.
- 8:49Ryan: story.
- 8:51Uh, I'll go fake.
- 8:54Kearns: Is it in an urban setting with the Bloods with a Z?
- 8:56Jon: course it is.
- 8:57Kearns: Of
- 8:58Jon: Of course it is.
- 9:00Ryan: Oh,
- 9:01Kearns: You
- 9:01Jon: So.
- 9:03Ryan: Hmm.
- 9:04Yeah.
- 9:05I'm gonna stick with No, well real go.
- 9:09Real,
- 9:11Kearns: You allowed to do that, Regis.
- 9:15Jon: Final answer, Ryan.
- 9:17Kearns: He said Real.
- 9:18I'm gonna go with real as well.
- 9:21Jon: Bloods versus wolves is real.
- 9:23Ryan: It just, you kinda like think about it, the Z like
- 9:28Kearns: It really felt like a you one though, dude.
- 9:31Ryan: I was curious about the singing.
- 9:32It's like if he says yes or no to this,
- 9:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:37I should have said yes.
- 9:38Kearns: Maria.
- 9:40Jon: I should have made, I should have made it a werewolf.
- 9:43West Side story.
- 9:46Ryan: that was the vibe I was getting.
- 9:49Jon: Speaking of parodies
- 9:51Kearns: Oh boy.
- 9:53Jon: werewolves of Wall Street.
- 9:57In this spoof, investors go all in on a mysterious new miracle
- 10:01drug that gives people super human traits with a monthly side effect.
- 10:10It's,
- 10:10Kearns: If this
- 10:11Jon: it's snort
- 10:12Kearns: believe
- 10:12Jon: and injectable.
- 10:14Ryan: If it was,
- 10:15Kearns: And injectable
- 10:16Jon: Yes,
- 10:16Ryan: it
- 10:16Kearns: Bs.
- 10:17It's injectable.
- 10:19Look at John's poker face.
- 10:21This one's fake.
- 10:22Ryan: fake rat on this.
- 10:25Jon: it's fake.
- 10:26Kearns: I want this one to be real so badly though.
- 10:30Those are rookie numbers.
- 10:32Jon: Michael Douglas.
- 10:33Michael Douglas or Michael Keaton?
- 10:35Michael Douglas.
- 10:37Ryan: Michael Douglas?
- 10:39Jon: Because that's Michael Keaton's real name.
- 10:41Ryan: Michael.
- 10:41Kearns: Yeah,
- 10:42Ryan: Not, not Batman.
- 10:43Kearns: because there was already a Mike
- 10:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:46Not the best Batman you mean?
- 10:48Ryan: Batman.
- 10:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 10:50We will take the heat in the comments defending that.
- 10:53By the way, Christian Bill does a good job and don't get me started
- 10:56on Emo Batman from Harry Potter.
- 10:57Right.
- 10:58The Penguin was a great series, but Jesus Christ, I can't get through that movie.
- 11:03It's the most Gen Z nonsense I've ever tried to sit through in my life.
- 11:07Ryan: the Riddler
- 11:08Jon: I feel so freed by not watching any of the Marvel or DC movies anymore.
- 11:13Kearns: I watched Lightning Bolts, um, like kind of in chunks to go to
- 11:17sleep, and it should have been good.
- 11:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:20Ryan: the sequel
- 11:20Kearns: Is that Shazam Sequel?
- 11:23Ryan: the, yeah, with the, the fury of the gods.
- 11:26The lightning bolt.
- 11:28Kearns: No lightning bolts is like the, um, the Avengers
- 11:30spinoff, like their expendable
- 11:32Ryan: Alright.
- 11:33Kearns: thunderbolts.
- 11:34That's the one not lightning bolts.
- 11:35Thunderbolts.
- 11:37Ryan: it wasn't
- 11:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 11:38Ryan: that disappoints me.
- 11:40Kearns: Mid at best.
- 11:43Ryan: That's,
- 11:43Kearns: outta 10.
- 11:44Ryan: you kill one of the best, hold on.
- 11:46When you kill one of the best like Marvel villains, right in the
- 11:48beginning, task Master, and you just make 'em look like a chump.
- 11:52The character has all the powers of every Marvel superhero.
- 11:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 11:56what they did with Century, they just made him Superman,
- 11:58but with like emotional damage.
- 12:01was just, it was just not, was, you'll see, it could have been good.
- 12:07the power there.
- 12:08Ryan: be Adam
- 12:09Kearns: they miffed it.
- 12:09Ryan: to the Galaxy three.
- 12:11Kearns: Let's get to the last ones, John.
- 12:13Jon: We have three left.
- 12:14Kerns has a to be.
- 12:18Kearns: That chance went away a long time ago.
- 12:20Jon: The next movie is
- 12:22Kearns: Like
- 12:22Jon: How In An Unwitting Family on a Fall Foliage Trip seeks
- 12:30a motel to stay for the night.
- 12:32On the night of a full moon.
- 12:35Kearns: I feel like they'd get sued if this was real.
- 12:38And then the sequels, how Aday in express
- 12:43Jon: No.
- 12:43Tell Motel Howl a Day Inn.
- 12:45Kearns: how Holiday Inn.
- 12:47Not until and at the Holaday Inn.
- 12:49Whatcha doing?
- 12:51this is the hardest one so far.
- 12:54Ryan: calling it.
- 12:57Kearns: Do I attempt to keep my perfect streak going, or do I
- 13:00make sure I stay ahead of Ryan?
- 13:04I think it's real, but I'm gonna say fake too.
- 13:07Jon: It is fake.
- 13:08You made the right choice.
- 13:11Kearns: That was all you buddy.
- 13:12I had to go with you 'cause I was like Exactly 50 50 on it.
- 13:16Ryan: in a werewolf costume, singing Christmas songs
- 13:21that.
- 13:22Jon: Right.
- 13:23Kearns: Two more
- 13:28Jon: So next is the Harlem Globe Trotters versus the Wolfman
- 13:34Kearns: real.
- 13:35Please be real.
- 13:36Jon: Fresh.
- 13:37Fresh off their adventure with the Scooby Gang.
- 13:39The world famous Hoopsters come face to face with the Wolfman
- 13:44Ryan: I'm gonna say fake.
- 13:46Fake.
- 13:49Kearns: What was the description again?
- 13:50The what?
- 13:51Hoopsters.
- 13:52Jon: world famous Hoopsters.
- 13:57Kearns: Some real, I'm real.
- 13:59Jon: It is fake.
- 14:00Kearns: Oh.
- 14:01Ryan: You know why there was a tell and you know what the tell was.
- 14:04This is what happens when you stay home from school and
- 14:07you watch Scooby-Doo movies.
- 14:09the only time the Harlem Globe Chowers were, we're with Scooby Doo
- 14:12and there's no connection episode with them being the wolf man.
- 14:16Yes.
- 14:19Jon: Oh, you made some logic jumps because this was intended to be
- 14:23a non Scooby do related venture.
- 14:26Ryan: I love
- 14:27Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:27Ryan: like OG Scooby Doo.
- 14:30Jon: Oh, I love it.
- 14:30I love the original Scooby dos, man.
- 14:34The box set behind me,
- 14:36Ryan: Doo?
- 14:37After, like when they finished the original and then they did
- 14:40the new Scooby Doo show, which was like, sorry for my singing,
- 14:43but like Scooby Dooby Doo for you.
- 14:46Scooby Dooby Doo.
- 14:49Jon: I like them, but not as much as the original ones.
- 14:52Ryan: monster.
- 14:52That's, that's why in
- 14:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:55Mm-hmm.
- 14:58Ryan: sorry.
- 14:59Jon: Okay.
- 15:00Last one, Bubba.
- 15:04The Redneck Werewolf, Bubba Blanche has become a beer swilling cigar
- 15:11smoking werewolf just in time.
- 15:14To save his hometown
- 15:17Kearns: The implications are so great just in time to save his hometown.
- 15:21From what, who knows?
- 15:23Who cares?
- 15:23It could be a prospector, it could be a, a landslide.
- 15:26Doesn't matter.
- 15:27Ryan: who does, who did the diabetes.
- 15:30just see him.
- 15:32Yes,
- 15:32Kearns: Well, Brimley is
- 15:33Jon: ley is
- 15:34Kearns: werewolf.
- 15:35Jon: Bubba
- 15:37Ryan: Fake.
- 15:38Jon: Bubba.
- 15:40Kearns: I am gonna go real just for the chance for the win.
- 15:43Jon: It is real and it is actually fairly magnificent.
- 15:48Ryan: say,
- 15:48Kearns: I bet it's
- 15:49Ryan: his face was the lead actor.
- 15:50I was like, all right.
- 15:51We were two for two.
- 15:53Kearns: could it not be fairly magnificent?
- 15:55All right, well I didn't get a perfect game, but I did.
- 15:58Jon: Nine.
- 15:58Nine outta 10 is Allison.
- 16:00Level
- 16:02Kearns: Allison level is godly, so I'll take that.
- 16:04Ryan, you got eight outta 10.
- 16:06Jon: eight outta 10 is damn good too.
- 16:08Ryan: real, I
- 16:09Kearns: He always does well though.
- 16:10Ryan: Doo uh, the Harlem Globe Trotters one.
- 16:12But once you mentioned Scooby, I was like, oh, I know this,
- 16:16Jon: I wanted that to be a real one so badly.
- 16:19Ryan: the Har Listen, the
- 16:20Kearns: Alright,
- 16:21Ryan: cartoon is a very underrated cartoon.
- 16:24All right.
- 16:25Very underrated.
- 16:27Kearns: get outta here.
- 16:28You critter.
- 16:29What are you playing with under me?
- 16:31Ryan: Don't, don't
- 16:32Kearns: this one's a big,
- 16:33Ryan: Oh,
- 16:34Kearns: cat.
- 16:35She's messing with plastic or something.
- 16:37Anyway, the Howling, 1981,
- 16:40Jon: I.
- 16:40Kearns: the Howling, 1981.
- 16:41Everybody an hour and a half of greatness.
- 16:45Ryan: it's like one of Joe Dante's first outings, and it's not bad.
- 16:49I mean, you know, he debuted with Piranha, of course, which is previously
- 16:54on another episode of Xenomania.
- 16:57it out Previously
- 16:59Jon: Xenomania,
- 17:00Kearns: But we're gonna point it out in the cards.
- 17:02I don't know where it'll be, but I'm putting it up in the video.
- 17:04Ryan: but
- 17:04Kearns: All right.
- 17:05Ryan: so much.
- 17:07Jon: it's also the reunion between Joe Dante and John Sales who Co-wrote Piranha.
- 17:12So it's, we have a Piranha reunion
- 17:15Kearns: And much like Piana, this movie takes itself seriously.
- 17:18But unlike Piana, this one actually feels like it.
- 17:21It lands, it sticks the landing a bit better on that.
- 17:25do you guys think about that?
- 17:26I.
- 17:26Ryan: agree.
- 17:27Jon: mostly.
- 17:28Kearns: there's a bit of weight to this,
- 17:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:30Kearns: I didn't remember on the rewatch.
- 17:32Jon: Yeah.
- 17:33Kearns: it took me a while to get into that groove of, this era of movie making.
- 17:38And it, yeah, it's hard for me to describe it.
- 17:41It really did take me a second to like remold my brain and
- 17:44start to enjoy it again.
- 17:45Ryan: like a crime thriller.
- 17:47And again, I haven't seen it in
- 17:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:49Ryan: either and I'm watching it.
- 17:51Kearns: It's very noir.
- 17:52Ryan: like in the opening.
- 17:53Eddie Quist, who's this serial killer, is stalking Karen White, who is a
- 17:57reporter and it's like they're on this whole stakeout, the cops are everywhere.
- 18:02You're in, I'm presuming Times Square at the time because I
- 18:05see all the Triple X signs.
- 18:07Jon: It's West Coast, I think, so it's probably like, Sunset Strip or something.
- 18:12Kearns: Yeah,
- 18:12Ryan: a second, and I was like,
- 18:14Jon: I mean
- 18:15Kearns: because
- 18:15Jon: though.
- 18:16Kearns: because
- 18:16Jon: Yeah.
- 18:17Kearns: that seventies gritty.
- 18:18'cause it's
- 18:18Jon: Yeah.
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:20I mean, I think those sections of New York City and LA were aside
- 18:25from, you know, maybe weather and attitudes, very similar looking.
- 18:29Kearns: You're probably right about that.
- 18:31Well, the thing too is that Times Square at that time was
- 18:34not a very good place to be.
- 18:37Jon: I mean, it depends what you were in Times Square for.
- 18:41Kearns: yeah.
- 18:41True porn and drugs and or to assault somebody in a various way,
- 18:47yeah, you were in the right place.
- 18:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:49Kearns: otherwise,
- 18:50Jon: Yep.
- 18:51Kearns: No.
- 18:51There was no m and m store back then.
- 18:53Kids
- 18:54Ryan: Oh,
- 18:55Jon: this was way before the disneyfication of Times Square.
- 18:58Ryan: yes.
- 19:00Kearns: New York had an edge to it back then.
- 19:02Still does, but like
- 19:04Jon: Not like that.
- 19:05Ryan: I mean, it's still crazy, but it's not how we recognize
- 19:09New York City as it once was.
- 19:11Kearns: Well, this is post, like Son of Sam had happened within a reasonably short
- 19:15period of time prior and things like that.
- 19:17New York was still considered a highly dangerous place to be.
- 19:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:21Kearns: so
- 19:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:22Kearns: yeah.
- 19:23But anyway, the gritty setting
- 19:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:26Kearns: noir aspect of it's there and it does, it doesn't serve things up to you.
- 19:30It makes you think there's, it almost felt like Hitchcock for a bit.
- 19:33Jon: Yeah.
- 19:34Ryan: it's,
- 19:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 19:35Okay.
- 19:35I'm glad it wasn't on base.
- 19:37Ryan: I mean, even when, like, you're in the scene where, like Eddie, like she
- 19:42meets Eddie in the porn shop and they're in the little sleazy porn outlet there,
- 19:46and she's watching that horrible video.
- 19:49He's like, he gave, he put in and he's talking to her.
- 19:52It's not like
- 19:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:55Ryan: uncomfortable.
- 19:56It's like that, usual
- 19:57Jon: Yeah.
- 19:58Ryan: the eighties.
- 19:58Like you got like that goosebump
- 20:00Jon: Yeah.
- 20:01Ryan: and then
- 20:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:03Mm-hmm.
- 20:03Ryan: you hear the transformation, which I thought was pretty cool
- 20:06Jon: Yeah.
- 20:08Ryan: like,
- 20:08Jon: Yeah.
- 20:09And like those newsroom scenes at the beginning and the end are
- 20:14feel so like dawn of the dead too.
- 20:16So it's immediately comfortable that way for me
- 20:18Kearns: Yeah, that's a good call.
- 20:21Jon: so before we go further, do you guys want a couple reviews?
- 20:24Ryan: I'm
- 20:25Kearns: please.
- 20:25Jon: All right.
- 20:26Well,
- 20:26Kearns: other people thought
- 20:27Jon: as always we'll start with a five star.
- 20:29Ryan: five star,
- 20:30Jon: Absolutely.
- 20:30There's a lot of five stars so that it's harder to find,
- 20:34the one stars than the fives.
- 20:36At least, the one stars in a reasonable length.
- 20:39So here's five stars.
- 20:41Awesome.
- 20:42The eighties era kills it.
- 20:44Again, I didn't grow up during the eighties, nor were my parents even
- 20:49together till 87, but I wish that I had, this is way better than most
- 20:55other werewolf movies made today.
- 20:57The makeup is phenomenal.
- 20:59Great story.
- 21:00I recommend watching at least once.
- 21:04That's a, I mean, that's a pretty rave review, I mean,
- 21:08Ryan: was, I didn't think it was gonna be as good as I remembered,
- 21:12and they did a really good job, especially with the transformations.
- 21:16I mean on a 1.7 million budget at that time, and seeing what they would do
- 21:20with American werewolf months later.
- 21:23It wasn't howling, wasn't
- 21:24Jon: mm-hmm.
- 21:25Ryan: at that time.
- 21:27Jon: No, I prefer the American Werewolf ones, but The Howling did a
- 21:31good job with theirs and a one star.
- 21:35That movie was horrible on almost every level.
- 21:39The only, the only good part is the nudity, the special effects.
- 21:46Kearns: it's got some good nudity.
- 21:47Jon: The special effects were atrocious.
- 21:50The story was boring.
- 21:52Hardly see any werewolves until almost an hour in the film.
- 21:57That ending was so lame and campy.
- 21:59It should be banned.
- 22:01Ryan: it
- 22:02Jon: The end where the news lady changes on live TV and turns into a
- 22:07straight up overgrown lapdog was dumb.
- 22:12Cocaine fueled some of the lamest films back then.
- 22:16Almost zero redeeming qualities, complete garbage
- 22:21Kearns: for the boobs.
- 22:23Ryan: except
- 22:23Kearns: person,
- 22:24Jon: boobs.
- 22:24Kearns: gave one star for one boob.
- 22:27Jon: I would, say the opposite.
- 22:29I think cocaine fueled some of the craziest, most awesome
- 22:33movies of the eighties.
- 22:35Kearns: I think you're probably right about that.
- 22:36And nineties.
- 22:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:38Ryan: He was,
- 22:39Kearns: yeah.
- 22:40Ryan: gone and that's a Masterpiece Chef's kiss right there.
- 22:46Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 22:48It goes to show the drugs, don't make the gem.
- 22:51you've gotta be an absolute genius plus drugs
- 22:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:54Kearns: to get away with it.
- 22:55But like
- 22:56Jon: And I mean, even then it didn't necessarily work out.
- 23:00Look at maximum overdrive.
- 23:01I love maximum overdrive, but that is not a good movie.
- 23:05And there was a lot of cocaine involved.
- 23:08Kearns: Yeah, that's a tough one.
- 23:10Andrew Wk of movies.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:15Yeah, man.
- 23:16with this movie in particular, what I liked about The Howling
- 23:19was the journey to that twist ending wasn't even a twist ending.
- 23:24It was
- 23:24Jon: Oh
- 23:25Kearns: ending.
- 23:26Jon: yeah,
- 23:27Kearns: they didn't give you a neat tidy ending, and it was pretty good.
- 23:30That review is kind of lame.
- 23:32I don't know if I'd give it, I wouldn't give it five, but I'd definitely
- 23:35give it a three, three and above.
- 23:37Jon: yeah,
- 23:38Kearns: it came out, and we were talking earlier, it comes out in the
- 23:41same year as, Wolfen and then American Werewolf in London, and three or four
- 23:48more where Major Werewolf movies came out afterward in the eighties, didn't
- 23:52Jon: yeah,
- 23:53Kearns: Probably a
- 23:53Jon: There were a lot of eighties werewolf movies.
- 23:57Kearns: and they all hinge on the special effects.
- 23:59That's like the major criticisms begin on the transformations.
- 24:02Transformations in this weren't bad.
- 24:04Jon: Yeah.
- 24:04I mean, obviously.
- 24:06They're kind of dated compared to what you can do now.
- 24:09But for 1981, the Howling and American Werewolf in London really
- 24:15nailed good transformation scenes.
- 24:19Ryan: two different types though, right?
- 24:20Like you have in the howling, you see the face like a long gate and transform an
- 24:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:27Ryan: werewolf.
- 24:27It's more of like the flesh.
- 24:29The flesh is coming off
- 24:31Jon: Yeah.
- 24:31Ryan: the werewolf is protruding out of, you can say it's
- 24:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:37Ryan: 'cause I feel like an American werewolf in London.
- 24:39The wolf is the, the true identity similar to the howling, but like,
- 24:45I feel like an American werewolf.
- 24:46They're trying to embrace more of the human identity in a way.
- 24:49'cause he, in his own way, he's trying to be human.
- 24:52He is trying to resist this.
- 24:54While in the howling, it's more about the acceptance, the accepting
- 24:58Jon: Hmm.
- 24:58Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:59Ryan: You wanna live forever and.
- 25:01Yeah, was interesting too, the lore how like they can't die.
- 25:07I mean, it's true, but to go into deep into the idea of like silver bullets
- 25:12and even burning them, which was something new to the lore at the, I
- 25:16feel like to be revealed at that time.
- 25:19Kearns: That gets into the like medieval, ways to do it.
- 25:22Burning was always a way to do it.
- 25:24So you didn't always hinge on like just the garlic or just the,
- 25:27this like decapitating burning.
- 25:30Those were all within their means, so they were always part of the stories back then.
- 25:34Jon: Yep.
- 25:34Kearns: So I guess they carried it over into this movie.
- 25:36But most modern movies you can't do that.
- 25:39You have to use the magic thing, silver Bullet or whatever.
- 25:43So I'm kind of glad they had that
- 25:45Jon: Yeah.
- 25:46Kearns: Burning the
- 25:46Ryan: Yeah, it
- 25:47Kearns: witch.
- 25:48Jon: Yeah.
- 25:48Ryan: it was a different add-on.
- 25:50It changes it up a bit.
- 25:51Jon: Yeah.
- 25:52Kearns: It's good.
- 25:53It was good.
- 25:54I.
- 25:54Jon: It sort of plays on some of those early eighties cult fears too,
- 25:59because after the trauma of the Peep Show booth, a psychiatrist sends,
- 26:06Karen to the Colony, which is almost instantly identifiable as a cult.
- 26:13Kearns: Yeah, the cult steria was a big deal.
- 26:16and they, I felt the Rosemary's babies, that's what I always call it, the
- 26:20rosemary baby vibe this, especially in that climactic scene when we've got the
- 26:27rifle and we're just popping werewolves.
- 26:30it was such a good scene.
- 26:31But yeah, I felt that vibe for sure.
- 26:34And I think John's nailing it right now, that Jonestown came later, didn't it?
- 26:39Jon: Jonestown had already happened by 81.
- 26:41Kearns: happened, so there you go.
- 26:42And
- 26:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:42Kearns: If people don't know this, a congressman was killed.
- 26:46Ryan: Drank the Kool-Aid.
- 26:47Jon: Yeah,
- 26:48Kearns: cult run down on his way to the airport and murdered,
- 26:53Jon: yeah,
- 26:53Kearns: he was going back to the states to do something
- 26:55Jon: yeah.
- 26:56Kearns: and then they knew that they were going down.
- 26:58That's when they gave everybody the Kool-Aid in Jonestown.
- 27:01That's a messed up one.
- 27:03Ryan: Jonestown
- 27:04Kearns: I like it.
- 27:05Ryan: was bad.
- 27:06Jon: I mean like, so I'm the only one old enough to like have been seen it happen.
- 27:14Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:15Jon: I remember like Time Magazine and Newsweek with the photos of bodies like
- 27:20just all over the place at Jonestown and like, you don't realize at that
- 27:27time, at least at my age, that a lot of those people didn't drink the flavored,
- 27:32Kearns: yeah.
- 27:33They were killed.
- 27:33Jon: they were shot.
- 27:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:36Jon: Yeah.
- 27:38Kearns: If they didn't drink the Kool-Aid, they were shot.
- 27:40Children, men, all of it.
- 27:41It was wild.
- 27:44Ryan: Well,
- 27:45Jon: Yep.
- 27:46Kearns: Get following
- 27:47Jon: Yeah, I mean
- 27:49Ryan: Don't
- 27:49Jon: he
- 27:50Ryan: kids
- 27:50Jon: like,
- 27:51Kearns: Koresh was later.
- 27:52Jon: like as you see with Dr. Wagner in the Howling, it's the ability
- 27:58to prey on fragile, broken people,
- 28:01Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 28:03Jon: and that's what Dr. Wagner does with Karen.
- 28:05Like he sends her right into this because it's his baby.
- 28:11He's trying to raise ethical werewolves.
- 28:14Ryan: you know, I'm happy that they got Patrick McNee in the role.
- 28:19I always pop for this because if you guys don't know, he was in a
- 28:22show called The Avengers John Steed.
- 28:26So it's
- 28:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:27Ryan: good to see him in like a different role, especially like
- 28:31protagonist to Antagonist you would say.
- 28:33'cause even in the beginning when you meet him, he's got that Dr.
- 28:37Monroe vibe, the Cane, the jacket, very island of Dr. Monroe.
- 28:42I'm forgetting the original, title for the Universal Film.
- 28:47Kearns: Oh, I don't remember
- 28:48Ryan: Troy,
- 28:49Kearns: Island, probably it's universal.
- 28:51But yeah, you're gushing over Dr. Wagner's character and how he had range, or the
- 28:57actor rather, and how he had range.
- 28:58Ryan: and it shows, but it's like very calming and that's kind of like
- 29:03what invites not even only Caden, but the audience in deeper into the
- 29:08film and deeper into the colony.
- 29:10And especially meaning like the different
- 29:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:12Ryan: Like, you can see
- 29:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:14Yeah.
- 29:15I mean, well, the first time you see, Marsha.
- 29:19Staring at Karen's man Bill, like he's food.
- 29:26Like it's not even, a lustful stare.
- 29:29It's a hungry stare.
- 29:32Kearns: Few hungry eyes.
- 29:34Nobody.
- 29:34All right,
- 29:36Jon: Hungry Eyes
- 29:38Kearns: That's actually pretty good.
- 29:39Jon: can't disguise.
- 29:40I've got hungry as, sorry.
- 29:45Kearns: All good.
- 29:47Brought you
- 29:47Jon: that.
- 29:47I know.
- 29:48Dirty Dancing soundtrack songs so well.
- 29:50Ryan: Dancing is a phenomenal film though, but his best is
- 29:53Kearns: Lived it.
- 29:59We got a Roger Corman cameo in this, don't we?
- 30:01Ryan: No, you don't think point break.
- 30:06Kearns: Oh, I tried to distract them, but it didn't work.
- 30:08Ryan: Roadhouse is excellent.
- 30:10Jon: That's, that's where I might go.
- 30:12And I came to Roadhouse late 'cause I skipped Roadhouse for a long
- 30:16time, and then I watched Roadhouse and now Roadhouse is the shit.
- 30:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:22Roadhouse is it?
- 30:24It holds up
- 30:25Ryan: You know the
- 30:25Kearns: well.
- 30:26Ryan: Bill,
- 30:27Kearns: Timeless.
- 30:28Ryan: Bill Murray?
- 30:28Yeah.
- 30:29Kearns: Murray?
- 30:30Yeah.
- 30:31Ryan: I
- 30:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:31Ryan: wife.
- 30:32She's with Patrick.
- 30:33Kearns: Smashing her up against the wall.
- 30:36I'm not sure if you're aware of this,
- 30:39Ryan: TNTI.
- 30:48Kearns: man.
- 30:48Ryan: is a
- 30:49Jon: It, I a little Bill Murray tangent also, I, I don't know if you
- 30:53guys watched it yet, but the trailer for the John Candy documentary.
- 30:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:58Very good.
- 30:59Jon: Oh, good.
- 31:00Kearns: to cry.
- 31:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:03Jon: good.
- 31:04Kearns: I didn't realize that John Candy died at my age.
- 31:07Jon: Yeah, I thought he was a little older than that.
- 31:10Kearns: Me too.
- 31:10Jon: thought he was a lot closer to 50.
- 31:12Ryan: it just all the, I, I didn't know he was a smoker, and when I
- 31:16found that out I was like that.
- 31:18Jon: Yeah.
- 31:18Ryan: it.
- 31:19'cause like the smoking, the drinking, the eating, it's like
- 31:22what happened with Chris Farley?
- 31:23Sadly.
- 31:24I mean, but Farley had a little more drugs involved.
- 31:27Kearns: think that heavier drugs had to have been involved a little bit
- 31:30Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 31:30No.
- 31:31Yeah, he was,
- 31:32Kearns: a day and
- 31:32Jon: he was,
- 31:33Kearns: steak
- 31:33Jon: he was a drinker.
- 31:35Kearns: kill
- 31:35Jon: He was a big drinker.
- 31:37I'm pretty sure he was in the, the cocaine fueled,
- 31:40Kearns: everybody was doing coke.
- 31:42Yeah.
- 31:43Jon: but like that scene in, what was it?
- 31:45Splash, where he is playing handball with Tom Hanks and he's struggling like that.
- 31:50Like he's really hung over in that scene.
- 31:52Like he's not pretending he's fully hung over.
- 31:55Ryan: drinking
- 31:56Kearns: Wow.
- 31:56Mm-hmm.
- 31:57Ryan: story.
- 31:57And he just
- 31:58Jon: Yeah.
- 31:59Ryan: over like that ball cracking him in the
- 32:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:02Ryan: real.
- 32:03Jon: Yeah.
- 32:04Like that.
- 32:04Yeah.
- 32:04That was a hundred percent real.
- 32:07He was just too hungover to get out of the way.
- 32:12Kearns: That's great.
- 32:12Can you imagine the howling with John Candy in it?
- 32:15Ryan: uh,
- 32:15Jon: Oh man,
- 32:16Ryan: salesman.
- 32:17Kearns: It'd be great.
- 32:18Yeah.
- 32:22Jon: that would be amazing.
- 32:24Kearns: we've talked about the movies.
- 32:25It's up against, most people prefer American Werewolf in London.
- 32:29What gives howling the edge if it has an edge?
- 32:34Jon: Dick Miller,
- 32:35Kearns: Miller because I, there was a Dick
- 32:37Jon: slim Pickens.
- 32:38Ryan: so, I forgot they were in there.
- 32:40Jon: Love seeing Slim Pickens show up in things.
- 32:43Ryan: I saw that name and I was like, God, I forgot about this.
- 32:47And I was like, wait a minute, my eyes deceiving me?
- 32:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:51Yeah.
- 32:52Kearns: Sam Newfield.
- 32:53Jon: I think consistently the howling goes for this scare where American werewolf
- 33:00in London will, you know, mix the scare and the joke and the scare and the joke.
- 33:05The howling is more straight horror.
- 33:09Kearns: Right.
- 33:10And I think that that's the thing we should point out about it,
- 33:13is that howling isn't afraid to take a while to get to the scare,
- 33:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:19Kearns: and do it in a way, and it isn't afraid to, you know, do these things.
- 33:24But American Werewolf in London relies heavily on the humor, the Comic Relief.
- 33:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:29Kearns: a summer blockbuster movie.
- 33:31It came out in August for a
- 33:32Jon: Yeah.
- 33:32Yeah.
- 33:34Ryan: I knew
- 33:34Jon: Yeah.
- 33:34Ryan: doing.
- 33:35Kearns: yeah, I thought the Ling was very good.
- 33:37know what I noticed by the way, when he shoots the doctor at the
- 33:40end, I think it's Wagner, right
- 33:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:42Kearns: and he goes, oh thank God.
- 33:45And he falls on the ground.
- 33:46Why does he do that?
- 33:48'cause he wants to die.
- 33:49Ryan: like, it shows,
- 33:51Jon: I think, yeah, that comes up in vampire movies sometimes too, where
- 33:56the immortal creature is happy to die.
- 33:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:00It's, like, oh, interesting.
- 34:01Ryan: band.
- 34:03Kearns: Gimme a mortality.
- 34:03I want to test that.
- 34:05Ryan: You want to vandal savage it.
- 34:06I don't know.
- 34:08Just
- 34:08Kearns: Yep.
- 34:09Jon: I mean, at some point everyone you've ever known is gone.
- 34:13Kearns: You know
- 34:14Jon: And it's just you.
- 34:15Ryan: new
- 34:15Kearns: There's more people.
- 34:16They're coming down the pipe.
- 34:17Yeah.
- 34:19It's okay.
- 34:20It's gonna be okay.
- 34:20Jon: I don't make friends that easy guys, so, yeah.
- 34:24Kearns: I liked you immediately
- 34:27Jon: I, I'm likable.
- 34:29I, but I don't make friends real easy.
- 34:31Ryan: it's like you gotta let 'em in the circle, the circle of trust,
- 34:35Jon: Yeah.
- 34:36Yeah.
- 34:36Ryan: through an interview process
- 34:39Kearns: broke into two circles of trust.
- 34:41Jon: Speaking of circles of trust, I have another review for
- 34:44you that goes way in circles.
- 34:47Just pay attention to these ratings.
- 34:49So this is a two stars.
- 34:52Out of five, a TV news reporter is sent out to act as a decoy
- 34:58to flush out a serial killer.
- 35:00But after she does her job, she goes to recuperate from the experience
- 35:04by joining a strange encounter group that is all, and nothing but
- 35:09werewolves, superb and grand special effects in a very well acted movie.
- 35:15But to be honest, story and characters are very downright boring and cardboard.
- 35:21Ryan: Hmm.
- 35:22Jon: A six out of 10, sir, we started at two out of five, which is a 40,
- 35:26Ryan: Yeah.
- 35:27Kearns: Yeah,
- 35:28Jon: we moved to, we moved to six out of 10 after saying.
- 35:32It's a superb movie with grand, special effects and very well acted.
- 35:38Kearns: It's very schizophrenic review.
- 35:40Jon: Yes.
- 35:42Kearns: or maybe I should say bipolar review.
- 35:43yeah, I don't really agree with that one either.
- 35:45I agree with some of the narrative.
- 35:47I don't agree with the numbers.
- 35:48I, well, we did, I did say a three or higher, and a three
- 35:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:53Kearns: outta 10.
- 35:54I really think this is a solid seven, 7.5.
- 35:57Jon: Yeah.
- 35:57Kearns: to 10 scale, three
- 35:58Jon: Yeah.
- 35:59Kearns: giving it a
- 36:00Jon: And a half.
- 36:00Kearns: tricky because there are movies out there that are great.
- 36:03I think a great movie is a four and this one just, just
- 36:07maybe just falls short of that
- 36:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:09Ryan: because if they.
- 36:11more to the story, maybe more time in the colony.
- 36:14Give us a few debts because you, you're squeezing a lot of the debts.
- 36:17In the end everything gets squeezed.
- 36:20Kearns: They had to make movies differently back then
- 36:23Jon: Yeah.
- 36:24Kearns: had to actually rely on the story
- 36:26Jon: Yeah.
- 36:27Kearns: and stuff to carry it, not CGI nonsense, so you don't
- 36:29get nonstop action and stuff.
- 36:31So it's kind of difficult to gauge this against a modern horror.
- 36:34Ryan: fair on
- 36:35Jon: Yeah, you have the different beats, you know, now you need
- 36:38the action sequence much quicker.
- 36:42Whereas, you know, in 1981, you could let that breathe a little bit.
- 36:46Kearns: because the tiktoks can't keep their attention on
- 36:48the screen for long enough.
- 36:50Ryan: like rewatching the older stuff and then us watching the newer stuff,
- 36:53you see the big difference And about it, like we've kind of fallen into that whole
- 36:58lane of everything's gotta be quick and
- 37:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:02Ryan: and me, for me, reset it to the point where it's
- 37:05okay to have a longer story.
- 37:07And a lot of
- 37:08Jon: Yeah.
- 37:09Ryan: about
- 37:09Jon: Yeah.
- 37:09I mean, just look at, we did the conjuring not long ago.
- 37:12It's, you can see the difference in the pacing.
- 37:16Kearns: Yeah, right.
- 37:17Good example.
- 37:18Ryan: it's very fast paced for a story.
- 37:20That should be a little slower if that's where you're
- 37:24Kearns: Yeah,
- 37:25Ryan: Okay.
- 37:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:26Kearns: I concur.
- 37:28I thought they took a great risk.
- 37:29Let's get to the Do we wanna talk about anything else before we go through the
- 37:35Jon: Now let's jump to the end.
- 37:37Kearns: I mean, it's good.
- 37:38But the ending with the reveal.
- 37:39Well, Karen takes a nip.
- 37:41She gets a little nippy.
- 37:42Nipped.
- 37:42she's a wolfen and she's gonna out them all.
- 37:45And this is
- 37:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:46Kearns: with what John's talking about, about like the cult.
- 37:49And I really think the cult craze of the time is a carryover of the
- 37:53red scare that came prior from
- 37:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:57Kearns: generation.
- 37:58They needed the boogeyman, the satanic panic, all that stuff is
- 38:01Jon: Yep.
- 38:01Kearns: the fear of the other blah, blah, blah.
- 38:03So Karen's gonna out them the Illuminati, the, no, the wolves.
- 38:08The wolves.
- 38:08Jon: The wove.
- 38:09Kearns: goes the Wol.
- 38:11she goes out to do it and they plug her ass on live TV
- 38:15Jon: Uh, I mean, yeah.
- 38:17I mean, to be fair, she does transform on live TV also.
- 38:21Kearns: And this is cool too, 'cause you get media gaslighting, which is
- 38:24something we're very familiar with today.
- 38:27So back then when I was growing up in the nineties, I would've never guessed
- 38:33outright lies through the media.
- 38:35Could be so like bold they are today.
- 38:38But in this movie, they do a good job of like, is it real?
- 38:42Was it special effects?
- 38:43Are
- 38:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:44Kearns: wolf cults out there?
- 38:45Jon: Yeah.
- 38:46Ryan: it's that questioning of like.
- 38:47Yeah.
- 38:48in the eighties, like you would expect it to feel like, oh shit, this is real.
- 38:53And they're questioning that, like, oh, it's just special effects.
- 38:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:00Kearns: Can't be real.
- 39:01Ryan: was real.
- 39:02She looked like a
- 39:03Kearns: It was real
- 39:04Jon: Yeah, she.
- 39:06Kearns: pood.
- 39:07Ryan: like it was just the
- 39:08Jon: Yeah.
- 39:09Yeah.
- 39:10Ryan: Even Enid from
- 39:12Jon: Yeah.
- 39:12She,
- 39:13Ryan: have that.
- 39:13All right.
- 39:17Jon: she did, she does end up looking kind of tame.
- 39:20Ryan: she seemed safe and you kind of feel bad when she gets shot,
- 39:24but that's also great when that's when they cut the feed, gunshots.
- 39:28Cut it.
- 39:29it.
- 39:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:32Kearns: Too far off that timeline.
- 39:33Probably beforehand, there was a newscaster who shot himself on live tv.
- 39:37Jon: It was a politician, bud Dwyer.
- 39:39Right?
- 39:40Kearns: It was a Bud Wire who did
- 39:41Jon: Larry?
- 39:42Larry, I think his first name was Larry.
- 39:45He was a, there might've been another one, but the one I'm thinking of is Bud Dwyer.
- 39:49He was a, I believe, a Pennsylvania politician who had been accused
- 39:54of some kind of corruption.
- 39:55Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 39:56Jon: turned out he didn't do it either.
- 39:59Kearns: Whoa.
- 40:00Jon: He's also the inspiration for the Filter song.
- 40:03Hey man, nice shot.
- 40:04Kearns: Oh, crazy.
- 40:07Jon: Yeah.
- 40:08Kearns: Crazy.
- 40:09There's layers to this onion kids.
- 40:11Wow.
- 40:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:14Kearns: Wow.
- 40:14There's a lot to chew on there.
- 40:16Jon: Which can take us to Nine Inch Nails because the guy that founded Filter was
- 40:21in the Nine Inch Nails touring band,
- 40:24Kearns: Hmm.
- 40:24Ryan: like nine inch nails.
- 40:27Kearns: And then from there we've got
- 40:31Jon: countless soundtracks now with Trent Resner.
- 40:34Kearns: Okay.
- 40:35So we, to Trent Resner,
- 40:36Jon: Yeah.
- 40:37Kearns: I was trying to make a joke, but it, I couldn't find any
- 40:39in the dark recesses of my mind.
- 40:41alright.
- 40:42But that, yeah, that's basically, that's the howling, it turned into a franchise.
- 40:46Shocker.
- 40:48didn't need to,
- 40:49Jon: Nope, nope.
- 40:50Kearns: not necessarily horrible franchise either, but it's a franchise.
- 40:53All right.
- 40:54Jon: it gets pretty rough after a couple.
- 40:57Kearns: And Ryan mentioned that this is based on a three book series.
- 41:01Ryan: Yeah,
- 41:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:03Ryan: and
- 41:04Kearns: the thing.
- 41:05Ryan: don't have anything to do with the movies.
- 41:06the first book is similar to the first movie, but they change a lot.
- 41:10And same thing with the second and third book.
- 41:12It's a whole different story.
- 41:14So
- 41:14Kearns: When you get those authors who just want their name
- 41:17on there based on the story, buy
- 41:19Jon: Yeah.
- 41:19Yeah.
- 41:20Kearns: well, I don't know man.
- 41:21If somebody was like, Hey, we're gonna heavily adapt
- 41:23your work, but here's a check.
- 41:25I'd be like, lemme see that check real quick.
- 41:27Hmm.
- 41:28And do some
- 41:29Jon: Yeah.
- 41:29Yeah.
- 41:30So I'll close this out with another one.
- 41:32Star
- 41:33Kearns: Let's do it.
- 41:34Jon: White, possibly the single worst Werewolf movie.
- 41:38Kearns: Single one.
- 41:40Jon: single worst after some of the ones I listed in the game
- 41:44at the start of this episode.
- 41:45We know that's not true.
- 41:47Ryan: you.
- 41:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:49Jon: Plot is nonsensical.
- 41:52The effects are only halfway decent.
- 41:55It's a comedy with Scooby Doo level writing, and the sound design
- 41:59makes it feel like the movie is supposed to be horribly wacky.
- 42:04Kearns: Hmm.
- 42:05Jon: And I'm not sure what movie this person watched.
- 42:09Kearns: First of all, what they do with latex or whatever that
- 42:11material is to elongate the faces and stuff to make that wolf snout
- 42:16and things like that is wildly good.
- 42:18I think they did a great job with the special effects.
- 42:21It was, what's his face?
- 42:23Rob Boon?
- 42:24Botten.
- 42:26Beton.
- 42:26No, that's not him, is it?
- 42:28Ryan: Yep.
- 42:29Kearns: It is, yeah.
- 42:30He's like 21 or 22 years old in this.
- 42:32He ended up doing the special effects for a few movies that
- 42:34are really, really great.
- 42:35John probably knows him right off the top of his head.
- 42:37Jon: I don't remember special effects guys' names.
- 42:39Kearns: wow.
- 42:40Jon: know a couple of the hugest ones.
- 42:42Kearns: They basically told him, they gave him full direction.
- 42:45'cause the script was like, and then she transforms and he had nothing to go on.
- 42:50So he really had free reign.
- 42:51And he was a young guy and he was very surprised and he got, recognized for it
- 42:56and he ended up doing gremlins and stuff
- 42:59Jon: The Joe Dante connection.
- 43:01Kearns: there.
- 43:02Jon: I forgot I have another fantastic one star for you guys if you want it.
- 43:06Kearns: yeah, let's hear it before we do the top fives.
- 43:08Jon: One star should have called this the hurling.
- 43:15Kearns: This guy was so proud of that.
- 43:16Jon: Because that is what I felt like doing after watching this drl.
- 43:23This rot rot was like all other Wolfman movies.
- 43:29Redundant boundlessly boring.
- 43:32Hackneyed poorly performed even more poorly scripted.
- 43:37And finally just plain silly, why this garbage gets such high
- 43:43ratings is beyond my range of understanding, but to each his own.
- 43:48Kearns: Oh
- 43:49Jon: This ju
- 43:49Kearns: a nice caveat.
- 43:51Jon: this junk was no better than the old lawn Cheney werewolf
- 43:55films from the forties, and they were pathetic beyond belief.
- 44:00Kearns: Damn.
- 44:01Jon: This,
- 44:02Kearns: Damn,
- 44:04Jon: this vomitous build should be avoided at all costs.
- 44:10Thumbs way, way
- 44:13Ryan: are
- 44:13Jon: down.
- 44:14Ryan: buddy,
- 44:15Kearns: person.
- 44:15Ryan: knocked one of the greatest horror films ever.
- 44:18Jon: I mean, listen,
- 44:19Kearns: A hundred, maybe.
- 44:20Top one 50,
- 44:21Jon: he, if you call Wolfman movies rot, I think you should probably
- 44:27stop watching them like it.
- 44:28This seems to be an issue he has with werewolves to begin with.
- 44:32So just stop, you know, you don't like them.
- 44:36Kearns: Let's just
- 44:36Jon: It is racist.
- 44:37Kearns: It is racist
- 44:39Jon: specious at the very least.
- 44:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:41Very good call.
- 44:42Ryan: New,
- 44:43Kearns: Good call.
- 44:44Ryan: in the
- 44:44Kearns: hear him talking about the mommy.
- 44:46crispy
- 44:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:48Ryan: The Invisible
- 44:48Jon: Yeah.
- 44:51Mm-hmm.
- 44:52Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:52Good call.
- 44:53Ryan: still?
- 44:53Kearns: Good call.
- 44:54We don't even know what that guy looks like.
- 44:57Ryan: I hate them.
- 44:59Kearns: Speech.
- 45:00Yeah.
- 45:00Guys, that's the Howling.
- 45:02Great movie.
- 45:03Uh, good.
- 45:03Good.
- 45:05movie.
- 45:06It's a good movie.
- 45:07Jon: A good movie.
- 45:07Kearns: give it a shot.
- 45:08Give that, definitely give it a shot.
- 45:10And we'll be doing more werewolf stuff at some point in the future, I'm sure.
- 45:14Jon: Yeah,
- 45:14Kearns: we're gonna jump in the top vibes.
- 45:16Ryan, you got something good for us?
- 45:19started.
- 45:20Ryan: I'm going with top five Werewolf films.
- 45:22number five is Universal Pictures Werewolf of London.
- 45:27it's the first werewolf film, or at least talky werewolf film for that time.
- 45:31And the first from Universal.
- 45:34I was gonna say, John, I was gonna say, am I wrong?
- 45:37I, I think right.
- 45:38It's, was gonna say, and, it's very simple.
- 45:41rich, philanthropists, Wilfred Glendon, goes to Tibet in search of the extremely
- 45:47rare plant, Lumina Lupina, which is rumored to be nourished by the moon.
- 45:53And while there, he gets attacked by a werewolf and breaks loose
- 45:57when he comes back to England.
- 45:58And it really sets the standard for a lot of the werewolf floor and the stories.
- 46:04a different take, I would say, but my number there we go.
- 46:11And it's a short, segment or segments, I should say, from trick or treat.
- 46:16I don't wanna spoil it.
- 46:17It's one of my favorite segments with Ana Packin.
- 46:19But you've never seen it and you're trying to figure it out, it's a
- 46:23great twist if you've seen it.
- 46:27Give us a, like, put a comment, your favorite scene from Trick or Treat.
- 46:31But that leads me to number three.
- 46:34And yes, the Wolfman does have nars the Monster Squad.
- 46:39I,
- 46:39Jon: Yes.
- 46:39Ryan: like, I was like, how can I fit this movie on here?
- 46:42And I was like, I'm going to, I love that film.
- 46:46Watch that film too many times.
- 46:48God, anytime it's, it's like if it's on demand or something, I put it on,
- 46:53I always get through like the first five minutes and then get called away.
- 46:56Then I get to the German's house, get called away.
- 46:59That's how it goes.
- 47:00But once you get to the ending, so good.
- 47:04Jon: Yep.
- 47:05Monster Squad is like the perfect gateway horror for your kids.
- 47:08Ryan: Okay.
- 47:09Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 47:11That and what's the one with, Fred Savage.
- 47:14get burned by light.
- 47:16Jon: Little monsters.
- 47:17Kearns: Little monsters.
- 47:17Another really good one for kids to get into it 'cause it's just scary enough.
- 47:21Ryan: introduce via the Universal Horror Films, though?
- 47:24Like the black and white ones?
- 47:28Kearns: I watched Young Frankenstein, well, not young Frankenstein.
- 47:31It doesn't really count,
- 47:32Ryan: counts.
- 47:33Kearns: young Frankenstein at a young age and I did
- 47:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:35Kearns: I did see like the original Frankenstein and stuff like that.
- 47:37Well, before I saw any real, well, actually, that's not true.
- 47:41I saw Chucky and stuff at six, so it's wrong.
- 47:45But I was already formed.
- 47:46I was able to watch the movies as opposed to
- 47:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:49Kearns: be like,
- 47:51Jon: I feel like you could with the old black and white ones, although
- 47:54like this generation seems to not like the black and white thing.
- 47:58Ryan: wouldn't be able to,
- 48:00Kearns: can't hang.
- 48:01Ryan: like
- 48:02Jon: Yeah.
- 48:03Ryan: how I was introduced was through the Universal Horror films
- 48:06and like the creepiness, the music.
- 48:08So it's like once you see something.
- 48:11From like the eighties or the seventies or nineties, which is gory.
- 48:15It's like a shift.
- 48:16It's a big change.
- 48:17But that
- 48:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:19Ryan: another big change in the eighties.
- 48:21And we've been talking again about this movie all night.
- 48:24It's American Werewolf in London, man, John Landis ridden, directed.
- 48:29it's so good.
- 48:30But there's a reason why it's number two, not because it's a bad movie,
- 48:35but because the Wolfman with Launch Chaney Jr. Has to be number one.
- 48:40Just, I
- 48:41Kearns: Okay.
- 48:42Ryan: it.
- 48:42Kearns: That's fair.
- 48:43Ryan: It's just, one of the first
- 48:46Kearns: I was very excited for the remake that they did when they did the reboot.
- 48:50Was that 15 years ago now or something?
- 48:52Anthony Hopkins.
- 48:54Jon: Oh, that was that.
- 48:55That's not the Benicio del Toro one,
- 48:58Ryan: Anthony
- 48:58Jon: it?
- 48:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:59Yeah, it
- 49:00Jon: Are those the same ones?
- 49:01Ryan: They change it.
- 49:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:02It was decent enough for it to be like, okay, I am glad I came to see that movie.
- 49:07And they did the homage scenes with the camera shots and things like that.
- 49:10Ryan: I'm fine with it.
- 49:12I just don't like how they change it to where the father
- 49:18Anthony Hopkins is a werewolf.
- 49:20Because I felt like in the original, when Claude Rains kills
- 49:26launch his son, he kills Lawrence and like he scratched by him.
- 49:30The curse continues through him.
- 49:32After the realization of shit, I killed my son and now I have to
- 49:35live through this while with the Anthony Hopkins once I feel like,
- 49:39Kearns: a long time.
- 49:40Ryan: he kills Benicio if I remember.
- 49:42And then
- 49:42Kearns: Nah,
- 49:43Ryan: of does his own thing after.
- 49:45Right.
- 49:45He doesn't die.
- 49:45Right.
- 49:47Kearns: you're valid in that though, because that's one of your favorites.
- 49:50When somebody messes with something that you cherish like that, of
- 49:53course you're gonna be critical of it
- 49:56Jon: Um,
- 49:56Kearns: gonna get it right.
- 49:58Jon: no love for Jack Nicholson in Wolf.
- 50:00Ryan: Nielsen a wolf.
- 50:01Kearns: I really didn't like that movie.
- 50:03Jon: it's not I don't even know that it's really a horror movie.
- 50:07Kearns: Now
- 50:07Jon: It's more like,
- 50:08Kearns: really more about his sex life.
- 50:09Jon: yeah, it's more like a romance sex movie than a horror movie.
- 50:15Kearns: We're gonna take Jack's shirt off.
- 50:17Uh, let's make it about werewolves.
- 50:18We'll save money on shavers.
- 50:20Ryan: at that time?
- 50:21Kearns: Just do that.
- 50:22Ryan: Yeah, the
- 50:23Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:25All right, John, you're up top fizzy.
- 50:27Five.
- 50:29Jon: I went top five d wallace slash d Wallace Stone movies.
- 50:35Kearns: Cool.
- 50:37Jon: So my number five, we had the first one a couple weeks
- 50:40ago in one of my top fives.
- 50:42We'll go with alligator two, the mutation.
- 50:45Kearns: Yes.
- 50:47Any of the alligator
- 50:48Jon: Yep, yep,
- 50:50Kearns: and second ones are very good.
- 50:51Jon: yep.
- 50:52A giant alligator has taken up residence in a city lake and
- 50:56munches on the urban denizens.
- 50:58She plays Christine Hodges.
- 51:02Kearns: Okay.
- 51:02Jon: my number four is popcorn,
- 51:07Ryan: popcorn.
- 51:07Jon: and popcorn is a killer with a talent for disguise.
- 51:11Carves up a group of college students hosting a horror movie
- 51:14marathon at an abandoned theater,
- 51:17Ryan: a clown
- 51:17Kearns: Wow.
- 51:19It's like a stripper name.
- 51:21Could be a clown, could be a stripper.
- 51:22I don't ever thought of popcorn that way before, but there it is.
- 51:25Jon: and she plays Suzanne in that one
- 51:30Kearns: That name
- 51:31Jon: Popcorn's pretty good.
- 51:32Kearns: Go by popcorn.
- 51:33Jon: I'll probably have to pop popcorn onto the calendar for next year.
- 51:38Kearns: There you go.
- 51:40Pop it up on, if you guys
- 51:42Jon: Pop it up.
- 51:42Kearns: and appreciate it, you're not good people.
- 51:45I, I caught that on.
- 51:47Jon: Thank you.
- 51:48Thank you.
- 51:49So number three, I mean, there's one big obvious one and it's this one Cujo.
- 51:55Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 51:57Yeah, she's in it.
- 51:58All right.
- 51:58Jon: Yep.
- 52:01it's a rabid St. Bernard wreaking havoc on a small town.
- 52:05Stephen King adaptation.
- 52:06She's Donna Trenton,
- 52:08Ryan: He took the hardcover book from the library.
- 52:11I saw it.
- 52:12The copy of Cujo.
- 52:15Kearns: Lost cover.
- 52:16No, no.
- 52:17would be way bigger.
- 52:18Jon: right.
- 52:19Number two sort of came up earlier.
- 52:22My number 2D Wallace movie is Critters.
- 52:27Ryan: Don't pick.
- 52:28Kearns: Nice.
- 52:29We even talked about critters nearly enough.
- 52:31Jon: no.
- 52:32I think we might have, to put the whole quadri on the calendar at some point.
- 52:37Ryan: over
- 52:37Kearns: Yeah,
- 52:38Jon: I mean, we can make fun of Baby Leo,
- 52:42Ryan: one, right?
- 52:43Third.
- 52:44Third one.
- 52:44Yep.
- 52:45Jon: third one.
- 52:45Yep.
- 52:46Ryan: Ah,
- 52:46Jon: Yep,
- 52:46Ryan: Leo.
- 52:47Jon: yep.
- 52:49So in Critters, she plays Helen Brown.
- 52:53a small vicious aliens pursued by alien bounty hunters landing a small farm
- 52:58town and begin to eat the residents.
- 53:01Ryan: good.
- 53:02Was it the second one?
- 53:04The second one's the, they're like the huge ball, right.
- 53:07Kearns: Paul.
- 53:08Ryan: they run over.
- 53:09Okay.
- 53:10Jon: Yeah,
- 53:11Kearns: and there's just the skeletons
- 53:12Jon: yeah,
- 53:13Kearns: that a
- 53:13Jon: yeah, yeah,
- 53:15Kearns: And then there was giant critter
- 53:17Ryan: right?
- 53:17That was the third one, or was that four?
- 53:20Jon: I
- 53:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 53:21They
- 53:21Jon: think so.
- 53:22Kearns: the stake.
- 53:22Who knows, man.
- 53:23Jon: Yeah, I,
- 53:26Kearns: Yeah.
- 53:27Critters ev everything made it to spa Anyway.
- 53:30Jon: Yeah.
- 53:30Kearns: one, John?
- 53:31Jon: So before I go to number one, I'll shout out probably her
- 53:35most famous role as the mom in et but et is not a horror movie.
- 53:39So it can't go on this list,
- 53:41Kearns: and
- 53:41Jon: even the
- 53:42Kearns: the kids use bad words to their mother in that
- 53:44Jon: mm-hmm.
- 53:45Kearns: I didn't appreciate that.
- 53:46On my rewatch of et by the way,
- 53:48Ryan: a, as a
- 53:49Kearns: little dickheads.
- 53:50All right.
- 53:51Ryan: an adult you're like, yeah, little shit.
- 53:54Jon: It's a little creepy.
- 53:55I mean, it's a little kid hiding an adult being with a LightUp finger.
- 54:03Kearns: Tell me more.
- 54:04Spielberg.
- 54:05Jon: Yeah.
- 54:06Steve, what are we up to here?
- 54:08But no, my number one is House of the Devil.
- 54:13She's the landlady.
- 54:14a struggling college student.
- 54:16Takes on a strange babysitting job on the same night as a lunar
- 54:20eclipse and really weird things.
- 54:23Follow.
- 54:25Kearns: That's
- 54:27Ryan: That was
- 54:28Kearns: That was a cool one.
- 54:29Both of those were really good guys.
- 54:31And then, yeah, she's one of those actors for people like me
- 54:34generally would be like, I know you
- 54:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:37Kearns: like, that's big time.
- 54:38Like close encounters to the third cut or
- 54:40Jon: There's,
- 54:40Kearns: She's,
- 54:41Jon: there's nearly 300 acting credits on her IMDB page,
- 54:46Kearns: she's been a lot of stuff.
- 54:48Jon: lot of tv, a lot like, and still going.
- 54:51She was in a movie called Red Christmas a few years ago, which
- 54:54I wanted to like a lot more,
- 54:57Kearns: Hmm.
- 54:58Jon: but,
- 54:59Kearns: Just to do right.
- 55:00Jon: mm-hmm.
- 55:01Kearns: but Ryan, saw me sneaking my book down.
- 55:03I was gonna do a sneaky top five and then I was trying to figure out my top.
- 55:07And I just don't love werewolf stuff as much as I need to do the sneaky top five.
- 55:12But when I do them, I do books, video games, and movies.
- 55:18So for this one, I just have one book I think people should tune
- 55:20into if they do like to read.
- 55:22And that's mongrels by Steven Graham Jones.
- 55:25And this is an interesting take on, the cross between poor, white trash
- 55:30and a. Werewolves and it's really good.
- 55:34It's just really good.
- 55:35gritty.
- 55:36with Steven Graham Jones, you either love him or you hate him.
- 55:39there's really not too much in between on his writing.
- 55:42It's kind of like, Brian Keane and stuff like that.
- 55:45they have their style and if it doesn't jive with you, Graham Jones, there's
- 55:48a few books he has that didn't hit with me, but this book is fantastic.
- 55:52It's kind of a must read if you like to read stuff about
- 55:55werewolves, so I highly recommend it.
- 55:58your list is like three long.
- 56:00You got like three in the queue.
- 56:01that I'm aware of.
- 56:02Ryan: Okay.
- 56:03I'm reading the ing
- 56:04Kearns: c crowing is by the greatest living horror writer.
- 56:08Ryan: The
- 56:08Kearns: I will say it.
- 56:09Ryan: still.
- 56:10Jon: And
- 56:10Kearns: say
- 56:10Ryan: looking for that dwarf.
- 56:12Kearns: barren,
- 56:13Jon: while we're,
- 56:14Ryan: the
- 56:14Kearns: spy.
- 56:15Jon: while we're shouting out stuff, I will,
- 56:18Kearns: Yes.
- 56:20Jon: fancy howling box set that, studio Canal put out.
- 56:25It may outta print.
- 56:26You might have to search eBay for it, but comes with a four KA Blu-ray.
- 56:31There's a book in here, a poster.
- 56:34If you can find it, it's worth it.
- 56:36Ryan: share,
- 56:37Kearns: a good one.
- 56:38Ryan: uh, I'm gonna, sorry John, I'm gonna steal it from you.
- 56:40John told me some information.
- 56:42If you get something that's from Europe and it's 4K, it
- 56:46will work in an American player.
- 56:48Jon: 4K.
- 56:494K is region free.
- 56:51Blu-rays are not always, sometimes they are some, most of them are not.
- 56:56Kearns: Good
- 56:56Jon: But you can also get a region free Blu-ray player for about a hundred bucks
- 57:02Kearns: Okay.
- 57:03Jon: and you can,
- 57:04Kearns: these days.
- 57:06Jon: it will play, you know, US movies, you just have to mess with the setting.
- 57:10Ryan: Like, okay.
- 57:12Kearns: All right, sweet.
- 57:12Ryan: the audio.
- 57:14Kearns: All right.
- 57:16Jon: it's a, you have to switch between region codes.
- 57:20US is region A, most of the rest of everybody else's region B.
- 57:26Kearns: Hmm.
- 57:29All right, you filthy animals.
- 57:30We're getting outta here.
- 57:31We we're starting to record again at the end of a work week on a
- 57:34Friday night, and it is hard.
- 57:36So love you guys.
- 57:39See you next time.
