- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi team, welcome to the show. I hope you're having an awesome
- 0:24week this week. Today in this episode, I want to
- 0:28talk about relationships. We talk about relationships a
- 0:31lot when it comes to having personal impact, but I want to
- 0:35filter it through this idea of the analogy of the tree.
- 0:39You know, I love talking about the analogy of the tree.
- 0:41I'm always looking to nature to learn and be able to synthesize
- 0:46information. In Chinese medicine, there are
- 0:49so many foundations and principles that are rooted in
- 0:51the lessons of nature. And so I try to infuse that into
- 0:54my coaching a lot. And I think it's helpful to
- 0:56simplify concepts and and think about things in a different way.
- 1:01The reason we talk about relationships so often is
- 1:03because as a human, as part of this complex system of society,
- 1:09we are always in relationship with people.
- 1:11And the quality of our connections with others often
- 1:15greatly dictates our sense of fulfillment and joy in our life.
- 1:20And so of course, we have to talk about it a lot.
- 1:22It's every single day that we're interacting with other people.
- 1:25It's a large majority of our energy going out into the world
- 1:29is through our interactions and our communication.
- 1:30So why wouldn't we spend a lot of time talking about this and
- 1:34understanding the dynamics of different types of
- 1:37relationships? I would say easily, this is
- 1:40probably one of the top things that coaching clients come to
- 1:44the table with in terms of wanting assistance, wanting
- 1:47support, and learning how to navigate the different
- 1:50relationships with different types of people in their life.
- 1:53And so it's a worthy conversation.
- 1:57What I witness in the different types of work that I do is that
- 2:01there can often be quite a bit of what I call resistance in
- 2:05relationships, and there's a lot of different reasons for that.
- 2:09Resistance is something I would define as suffering or
- 2:13struggling as a result of resisting what is here now.
- 2:16So whether it's acknowledging that somebody is the way they
- 2:21are, acknowledging that there is a circumstance here that we
- 2:24can't do anything about, our resistance to reality is often
- 2:28what leads to our suffering and our struggling.
- 2:30And when we can release that, when we can remove it, when we
- 2:35can let the resistance go, often what follows is more peace, more
- 2:39ease, just a greater sense of fulfillment and a more enjoyable
- 2:44life. The people who I find are most
- 2:47unhappy are most steeped in resistance to their own reality.
- 2:54And it's hard. It's really hard to see, It's
- 2:57hard to witness. It's hard to sometimes help
- 3:00people understand that they have a choice and that they can
- 3:03release resistance if they choose to.
- 3:05It's just about how you frame things and how you look at
- 3:08circumstances. And the same is true of
- 3:10relationships. We can acknowledge that we're
- 3:12all humans. We are capable and resilient.
- 3:15Expansion and growth is something that we all have
- 3:18access to if we choose it. And so I'm not saying that you
- 3:21have to blatantly accept everyone for who they are all
- 3:23the time. But what I am saying is
- 3:27oftentimes our expectations of other people is what creates
- 3:31resistance. We expect that people show up in
- 3:34a certain way in our life. We'd expect that they behave or
- 3:37communicate or act in a certain way that is fitting for us.
- 3:42And this is very much true for how people show up for us in our
- 3:46lives. You know, whether somebody is
- 3:48present through the good times and the hard times, whether they
- 3:52are supporting you enough, cheering you on enough.
- 3:55We have so many different expectations around how people
- 3:59should behave in our lives and in our in our circles and our
- 4:02dynamics in our communities. It is easily one of the things
- 4:06that I coach on most is to help people release expectations,
- 4:10deal with what is here now in reality, and not be stuck in
- 4:16resistance around a reality that they would like to see.
- 4:20Preferably because even though we can be the creators of our
- 4:24own life, it is only us that we can control.
- 4:26We cannot control how other people show up or act or behave
- 4:29or communicate. And to think that we do have
- 4:32control over that is a huge source of resistance in our
- 4:36lives. So in the spirit of thinking
- 4:38about how we can release some of that and create more ease,
- 4:41because, you know, I'm all about ease right now, I wanted to
- 4:44introduce this analogy of three different types of people.
- 4:47And I've seen this idea floating around over the last few years,
- 4:50but recently I saw it again on social media from a guy, Sahil
- 4:54Bloom, and he was talking about the three different types of
- 4:56people as they correlate to a tree.
- 4:59And so you have the leaves, the branches and the roots.
- 5:04And the leaves are people that are around from time to time.
- 5:08I would consider them more acquaintances, maybe more
- 5:11lighter, superficial relationship surfacing maybe.
- 5:15And they're around when the weather's good, during the warm
- 5:17seasons, and it's awesome. And they might blow around as
- 5:20winds change, but they also could fall away and disappear
- 5:24when seasons get cold. So during those winter seasons,
- 5:27those leaves fall to the ground and they disappear.
- 5:30And that's OK. They are the leaves.
- 5:33You also have the branches and these types of relationships,
- 5:36these people, they're more present.
- 5:38They're more stable than leaves, but they're not permanent.
- 5:42The size of the branch can vary. The strength of the branch can
- 5:45vary. In fact, some of those branches
- 5:47look really, really strong. But if you stand on them, you
- 5:50hang on them, you try to hold yourself up, they might break
- 5:53under your weight. And that's just the nature of a
- 5:56branch, right? And then finally, you have
- 5:59roots. And roots are these people who
- 6:03are around for the long term. They are present.
- 6:06The relationships are deep and wide.
- 6:09They're strong. They are there for every season.
- 6:13They are in fact undisturbed by changing seasons because most of
- 6:17the time they're underground, they're rooted, right?
- 6:20They're also life giving to the tree.
- 6:24So these root relationships are very different and they're
- 6:26crucial. The leaves of the branches, they
- 6:30may come and go, but the roots are there forever for the life
- 6:33of the tree. And I think this is so helpful
- 6:36to understand and think about. And this would have helped me a
- 6:38lot in my 20s and even in my 30s to understand that there are
- 6:43different types of people in your life.
- 6:46There is nothing wrong with having leaves and branches in
- 6:48your life. In fact, some of the greatest,
- 6:51most fun times I've ever had are with the people who are more
- 6:54like the leaves. You know, my wife always teases
- 6:57me because I'm a very social person.
- 7:00So I will talk to anybody. I'll have a conversation with
- 7:02someone at the airport, at the hotel pool, in the lobby, out at
- 7:06the restaurants, wherever we are.
- 7:08I'm going to talk to somebody and form a connection with them.
- 7:10And she always teases me. She's like, you're never going
- 7:12to see them again, or even if you do, like what?
- 7:15What are you going to have a deep relationship?
- 7:18And my argument is, you know what?
- 7:20I love those interactions. I love those connections with
- 7:22the people who are leaves in my life.
- 7:24And they might not be permanent, but it brings me joy.
- 7:27So I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
- 7:30Having the leaves and the branches in their life is part
- 7:33of the connection. It's part of being in a complex
- 7:37system of humanity. But it's also really helpful to
- 7:41acknowledge that they might not be there during the harder
- 7:44seasons. They might not be there during
- 7:47the colder winter months of life.
- 7:50And that feels really helpful to me because when I reflect back,
- 7:55there have been so many circumstances in my life where I
- 7:57felt struggling and suffering and resistance around my
- 8:03expectations of how people should show up.
- 8:06You know, we've all had friend falling outs that were really
- 8:09painful. I've had really hard times in my
- 8:12life where I was sort of surprised and saddened by the
- 8:16fact that some people that I thought were going to be there
- 8:19for me weren't there. And what I didn't know and
- 8:23realize and really integrate was those people served a really
- 8:28important purpose in my life, but they weren't necessarily the
- 8:31roots. And that's OK.
- 8:33It can be a little sad sometimes to understand and find out that
- 8:36maybe somebody you thought was a root wasn't a root in the end,
- 8:41but just to know that every relationship serves a purpose.
- 8:45Every tree needs the branches and the leaves, otherwise it
- 8:48wouldn't be as beautiful as it truly is.
- 8:50And so we have to honor all of these different types of people
- 8:53in relationships. We have to be OK with the fact
- 8:56that through seasons of our life, the look of the tree is
- 8:59going to change, but you will have that inner circle of people
- 9:04who are your roots, and then you will have those branches and
- 9:07those leaves during the warmer seasons of life.
- 9:09That's OK. It's part of the beauty.
- 9:12And to be able to release some of the feelings around
- 9:15relationships in your life, that's a really powerful thing.
- 9:18To be able to let go of resentment about what you
- 9:22expected people to do or how you were hoping people were going to
- 9:25show up. It's freedom and it's grace and
- 9:28it's gratitude to be able to just say, you know what?
- 9:31They were there for a season and it was awesome.
- 9:33And I'm, I'm appreciative of that.
- 9:36So my challenge to you this week is to think about your
- 9:39relationships. Who are the leaves?
- 9:41Who are the branches? Who are the roots?
- 9:43And in the past, can you reflect and say, yeah, there's some
- 9:47stuff that I can release and let go of because I can acknowledge
- 9:50that those people were there for a specific reason.
- 9:53They made the tree beautiful and then the season changed and
- 9:56that's just a natural part of the cycle.
- 9:59To me, that feels like freedom. It feels like a total reframe on
- 10:03human dynamics and relationships where it makes it OK for there
- 10:07to be all kinds of people in your life for all different
- 10:09purposes. I think we can honor that and it
- 10:12makes our impact that much more powerful because we get to
- 10:15decide, who do I want to be to people?
- 10:17Is this relationship more of a leafy relationship or is this a
- 10:21branch? Is this relationship really a
- 10:23deep root in my life? If so, I should pour into it
- 10:26more. I should really be intentional
- 10:29about how I'm showing up for these people.
- 10:31So lots to think about, lots of different ideas wrapped up into
- 10:34this analogy, but I hope this feels helpful to you.
- 10:38Anytime we can release resistance and find a little bit
- 10:41more freedom, we are able to have a more powerful impact in
- 10:44the long run. So thank you for listening.
- 10:47Thank you for being out in the world and influencing with your
- 10:51powerful relationships. And as always, team, thank you
- 10:53for being ready to Impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
