- 0:08is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:28Our current series is Divine Disappointments, Facing Pain
- 0:33and Sorrow at Work.
- 0:35And to catch you up, we're kind of
- 0:36wrapping up the series with a four part
- 0:39series within a series about the life of
- 0:41Joseph, but also sharing about Katie's journey and
- 0:44my journey individually and together, kind of our
- 0:46vocational lives and particularly Katie's health life, but
- 0:49also my mental health life and our life
- 0:51with God in the church and how all
- 0:53those things kind of intersect and some points
- 0:55of connection with Joseph's story.
- 0:57So we're going to start with Joseph and
- 0:59then we'll give Katie a chance to share
- 1:01a little bit about what happened next in
- 1:03our story and I'll share too.
- 1:05So, um, Joseph, uh, when we last left
- 1:08Joseph, he had been sold into slavery by
- 1:10his own brothers and taken to Egypt.
- 1:12He ends up in the house of a
- 1:15relatively high ranking official named Potiphar.
- 1:17Uh, he kind of becomes the manager of
- 1:19that household.
- 1:20Uh, but then he is falsely accused and,
- 1:24um, put in prison.
- 1:26Um, so he's falsely accused of sexual assault.
- 1:28He ends up in prison.
- 1:30So, uh, let me start in chapter 39,
- 1:33verse 20.
- 1:34And Joseph's master took him and put him
- 1:36into the prison, the place where the King's
- 1:38prisoners were confined, and he was there in
- 1:40prison, but the Lord was with Joseph and
- 1:42showed him steadfast love and gave him favor
- 1:45in the sight of the keeper of the
- 1:46prison.
- 1:47And the keeper of the prison put Joseph
- 1:48in charge of all the prisoners who were
- 1:50in the prison.
- 1:51Whatever was done there, he was the one
- 1:52who did it.
- 1:53The keeper of the prison paid no attention
- 1:55to anything that was in Joseph's charge because
- 1:57the Lord was with him and whatever he
- 1:59did, the Lord made it succeed.
- 2:02Okay.
- 2:03So ending there on an encouraging note of
- 2:05how the Lord was still with Joseph, but
- 2:07he's with Joseph in prison.
- 2:09I mean, imagine that you're in Joseph's situation,
- 2:12alienated from your family, in a different culture,
- 2:15uh, having a measure of success, and then
- 2:17ending up on the wrong side of the
- 2:19criminal justice system through no fault of your
- 2:21own, um, being literally imprisoned.
- 2:23What a dark place for Joseph to be.
- 2:26Uh, if Joseph, when he was sold into
- 2:28slavery, if that was kind of like the
- 2:29death of his dream that he had, in
- 2:32some ways being put in prison is like
- 2:34the second death or the double death of
- 2:36his dream.
- 2:37Um, and this is a pattern that we
- 2:38see in other places in scripture too, that
- 2:40sometimes when God gives a dream, the dream
- 2:42doesn't just die.
- 2:43It really dies.
- 2:45It dies a terrible, agonizing death.
- 2:47Um, and that, that's very much something that's
- 2:49resonated with me in my journey.
- 2:51Yeah.
- 2:51Talk about that.
- 2:52With what's unfolded in our lives since, um,
- 2:55since that, that kind of crisis that started
- 2:57in 2016.
- 2:58So to, to kind of fast forward a
- 3:00little bit, uh, 2017, 2018 were like better
- 3:04years, but still really challenging.
- 3:06Um, Katie and I, I was more stabilized
- 3:08mentally.
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:10Yeah.
- 3:10Um, and you were, um, you and I
- 3:13both were going through a kind of, uh,
- 3:16contemplative spirituality program at our church called Transformation
- 3:19Intensive, which was really helping me with, with
- 3:22setting those boundaries around kind of performance and
- 3:25ministry, uh, learning how to attend to my
- 3:27own soul, learning how to attend to our
- 3:29marriage and to you personally, and then thinking
- 3:32about ministry and just doing things in a
- 3:35lot healthier way.
- 3:36So it was a real year of growth
- 3:37for me, which, which was a grace.
- 3:39At the same time, that was a really
- 3:41hard year for you in terms of your
- 3:42relationship with the church still.
- 3:44Yeah.
- 3:45Um, I think the way I would describe
- 3:47it is if you're going through a period
- 3:50of mental unwellness, just fundamentally the way you
- 3:53relate to the world and yourself and other
- 3:57people and God included is just, it's on
- 4:00the fritz.
- 4:02Um, you know, depression is isolating, isolates you
- 4:06from yourself, isolates you from others in your
- 4:10life.
- 4:10You, you're lacking that vital spark to connect
- 4:13and that applies to your relationship with God
- 4:16as well.
- 4:16It, it, it felt like just talking and
- 4:19hearing my own voice echo.
- 4:22Yeah.
- 4:22So a real sense of isolation, even alienation
- 4:26to a certain extent and, and just not
- 4:31knowing how to like find a place to
- 4:33belong in the church is what I remember.
- 4:36And we still both had this assumption that
- 4:39life was going to get back on track
- 4:41and you were going to go and be
- 4:43a pastor.
- 4:44And so I guess, you know, unspoken that
- 4:48implied I was going to be a pastor's
- 4:49wife.
- 4:50And well, what did that really mean?
- 4:51I don't think we, either of us had
- 4:53a good concept of that, but I was
- 4:55just picking up on things in the water,
- 4:59in the air, cultural assumptions, um, and realizing
- 5:03that the me I was becoming just did
- 5:06not fit that mold whatsoever.
- 5:08So that made me feel really displaced.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:12And, and I think for me, I had
- 5:15viewed the, the crisis so far, like starting
- 5:18in 2016 as maybe like a speed bump
- 5:20or a short detour, and then I still,
- 5:23and this is kind of me being headstrong
- 5:25and pursuing my dream, like I talked about
- 5:26in the first episode, um, I was like,
- 5:29okay, let's get this plan back on the
- 5:30road now, you know, like I'm all healed
- 5:32up, did my contemplative, uh, prayer ministry year,
- 5:35learned how to be healthy in ministry.
- 5:37Now let's go do this thing.
- 5:38You were so ready.
- 5:39I was so ready to go.
- 5:40And I, I still very much thought about
- 5:41Katie as eventually Katie will figure out how
- 5:44to be a mom and a pastor's wife.
- 5:46And that'll be great.
- 5:47And I really thought about the rest of
- 5:48Katie's life, including her, her work as a
- 5:51nurse, almost just like icing on the cake.
- 5:53Like I didn't really think about it that
- 5:54much.
- 5:54Whereas I, in the meantime was realizing this
- 5:57is really where my vocation is, uh, professionally
- 6:01in the nursing world.
- 6:03I'm just getting ready to take off with
- 6:05that.
- 6:07And it would be a while before I
- 6:09really started paying attention to that.
- 6:10Um, I was still really focused on my
- 6:12plan, how I was going to get things
- 6:14done.
- 6:14And, uh, where that kind of led us
- 6:17in the immediate future was I took a
- 6:19job at a wonderful ministry in Chicago called
- 6:21the Chicago campus initiative, uh, where I was
- 6:24doing student ministry on campus at the university
- 6:26of Illinois at Chicago.
- 6:27And, uh, part of my thinking with that,
- 6:30and, and, and you reflected on this too
- 6:32is, Hey, maybe a change of scenery will
- 6:33do Katie good.
- 6:34Maybe we're going to a different church.
- 6:36It's still in our tradition, still connected.
- 6:38It's a little smaller.
- 6:39Maybe, maybe that'll be easier for Katie to
- 6:41connect with.
- 6:42So I thought.
- 6:43Yeah.
- 6:43And I, I thought, you know, I'm not
- 6:45sure what does work.
- 6:47I feel like what we're doing now doesn't
- 6:48work.
- 6:48So we might as well throw some spaghetti
- 6:50at the wall and see what sticks.
- 6:52Yeah.
- 6:52And so, uh, we started throwing spaghetti and,
- 6:56uh, I started doing student ministry.
- 6:57So this would have been like January of
- 6:592019, like the second semester of that school
- 7:01year.
- 7:02And within a few weeks, it became really
- 7:04clear that this spaghetti wall was no stickier
- 7:06than the last.
- 7:08We made quite a mess.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:10Um, and so I, I was, I was,
- 7:12uh, doing ministry still, but Katie really still
- 7:15felt distant from the church.
- 7:16Yeah.
- 7:17And it was impacting your work to the
- 7:21extent, like even proximity to the church in
- 7:25any way felt unbearable to me.
- 7:28Cause I just had so much baggage to
- 7:30sort through.
- 7:31Um, and so I really was not able
- 7:35to cope with the idea of you, your
- 7:38ministry taking off, I would get left behind.
- 7:42Yeah.
- 7:43Yeah.
- 7:43There was definitely a sense of even getting
- 7:46close to church created, not just like difficulty
- 7:49for Katie, but like emotional distress, like trying
- 7:52to go to a church service, you would.
- 7:54Panic attacks.
- 7:55Yeah, literally.
- 7:56And, and we didn't know why at the
- 7:57time.
- 7:58And so this was very disorienting for me.
- 8:01Part of what I began to realize was.
- 8:04I've assumed that this kind of crisis that
- 8:06Katie has gone through is a little detour,
- 8:09but I think it's something bigger than that.
- 8:11It was actually like the main through affair.
- 8:14Yeah.
- 8:15Yeah.
- 8:15It was, it was like a different road
- 8:17entirely in some ways.
- 8:18Um, and so for me, that was that
- 8:21moment of feeling like, okay, if, if 2016
- 8:23was a speed bump, 2019 was like hitting
- 8:24a wall, um, where I felt like what's
- 8:28happened to my dream?
- 8:29Like, I thought we were getting back on
- 8:30track with this.
- 8:31I thought I was getting back into ministry.
- 8:33And, and lo and behold, like my wife
- 8:35still doesn't know how to be present in
- 8:37church and church feels like strangely toxic to
- 8:40her somehow, even though it's like, we don't
- 8:41know why.
- 8:42And like, what am I going to do?
- 8:43And, and eventually we kind of got to
- 8:45a point of just like desolation of me
- 8:48realizing I'm not a dad.
- 8:50It doesn't look like I'm going to be
- 8:50a dad anytime soon.
- 8:52And I really don't think I can be
- 8:53a pastor anytime soon.
- 8:54Uh, and be a healthy husband at the
- 8:57same time.
- 8:57They felt like mutually exclusive options.
- 9:00Um, and I just remember I, uh, we,
- 9:02we, we actually changed churches again.
- 9:05So I kept in the ministry job, but
- 9:06then we started attending a church in Aurora.
- 9:08Also same tradition, same diocese called city of
- 9:11light.
- 9:11And I remember it on an Ash Wednesday
- 9:12service.
- 9:13I was just like praying with father Trevor
- 9:16there and like snot dripping down from my
- 9:18nose to my hand.
- 9:19And I was just like, I was at
- 9:19rock bottom.
- 9:20Like I, I had no idea where my
- 9:21life was going because it felt like everything
- 9:23that I had assumed up to that point
- 9:25was not coming true.
- 9:27I wasn't even able to come to that
- 9:28Ash Wednesday service because baggage, but I remember
- 9:31it being really significant for you.
- 9:33I came home and stuff was going on,
- 9:35but like, yeah.
- 9:36So, um, so to kind of leap forward
- 9:39again, um, I still had really great support
- 9:42from the church and from my team in
- 9:43the city.
- 9:44Um, my supervisor there, Nate was also very
- 9:46sensitive wanting to do whatever was best for
- 9:47Katie.
- 9:48So we eventually discerned, Hey, maybe what Katie
- 9:51needs right now is just some room and
- 9:52some space and some time.
- 9:54And like, not the pressure of like a
- 9:56ministry career for Chris moving forward at a
- 9:59hundred miles per hour.
- 10:00So we discerned with the church, with friends
- 10:02and family for me to take a marketplace
- 10:04job.
- 10:04And I ended up working at a mortgage
- 10:05company, uh, which was not on my bingo
- 10:07card.
- 10:08I had no background in finance.
- 10:09The last time I had taken a math
- 10:10class was in high school.
- 10:11I was an English major, uh, in college.
- 10:14And so, um, this was in the pandemic
- 10:16now in 2020, and I found myself doing
- 10:19mortgage stuff 40 hours a week.
- 10:21Uh, and so that was, that was totally
- 10:23different than anything I'd ever expected.
- 10:25Um, but that actually ended up being a
- 10:27grace for me and for Katie too.
- 10:29Um, part of what happened for me is
- 10:32I realized I could meet Jesus in an
- 10:34everyday job that wasn't quote unquote, a ministry
- 10:36job.
- 10:37Um, and, and that's where a lot of
- 10:39the energy for the ministry of mission central
- 10:40actually came from.
- 10:41It's vision of forming Christians for mission and
- 10:44everyday life that your normal workplace, even if
- 10:47it's quote unquote secular can be a place
- 10:49for deep formation and meaningful mission.
- 10:51And I began to experience that.
- 10:53And that was, that was thrilling because before
- 10:54up to that point in my life, I'd
- 10:56been terrified of the idea of having a
- 10:57secular job.
- 10:57I was like, Oh no, what do I
- 10:59do if I have to do a terrible
- 11:00secular job?
- 11:01And instead I found out you can experience
- 11:04the joy of Jesus at a secular job
- 11:05by, by living a life of contemplative mission,
- 11:08just like you do if you're doing quote
- 11:09unquote ministry.
- 11:10Um, but it was also helpful for you.
- 11:13Yeah.
- 11:13And for me, something came to life, which
- 11:15I had never experienced before.
- 11:17It just felt like it made so much
- 11:19more sense to me to be the wife
- 11:20of a mortgage dude, um, instead of a
- 11:25pastor's wife.
- 11:26Um, I think because of the way that,
- 11:28that women were professionally built up and celebrated
- 11:32in your work culture, I just, I felt
- 11:34like I fit into that world so much
- 11:36more easily, not saying that the churches we've
- 11:39attended, um, have discouraged that for women or,
- 11:43or tried to, I don't know.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:46But there was just something that I think
- 11:48God ministered that clicked into place where you
- 11:50were like, we were at this company retreat,
- 11:52I remember.
- 11:53And talking with some of my coworkers who
- 11:55were women and just like them seeing you
- 11:57as a fellow professional, like you're a nurse
- 11:58and I'm just like celebrating you for that.
- 12:00Whereas I feel like my fear was if
- 12:04we had been having that kind of conversation
- 12:05within the church, I would be feeling like
- 12:09I needed to justify why I didn't have
- 12:11kids yet and why I was holding back
- 12:15my husband from being a pastor, um, and
- 12:18the depth of that may or may not
- 12:20be warranted.
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:23You were still working through inter interior things
- 12:26as well as thinking about church culture things
- 12:28and how do we navigate what it means
- 12:29to quote unquote be a pastor's wife.
- 12:31Um, but for me, it also was a
- 12:33season of really affirming Katie and her vocation
- 12:35outside of the house.
- 12:37Um, and the way she ministers and healthcare
- 12:38to other people, she was working in hospice
- 12:40at this point, she'd finished her bachelor's.
- 12:42She was starting her master's.
- 12:43Uh, she would eventually become a nurse practitioner.
- 12:46Um, later in the story.
- 12:47Um, but I really began to see just
- 12:49how meaningful Katie's ministry was in its, in
- 12:51its own right.
- 12:53So yeah, so that, that's kind of, um,
- 12:55I think where we'll leave the narrative at
- 12:57this point in the story, I'm working at
- 12:59a mortgage company.
- 13:00My dream has really died at this point.
- 13:02There hasn't just been a death of the
- 13:03vision.
- 13:04There's been a double death of the vision.
- 13:05There's been a death of the dream.
- 13:06So dead, so dead, beat it with a
- 13:07stick.
- 13:07I won't respond.
- 13:09Um, and yet just like Joseph in that
- 13:11prison, God was with me and I was
- 13:13discovering the joy of the gospel afresh in
- 13:15some ways for myself.
- 13:17Um, and I was seeing Katie with new
- 13:19eyes.
- 13:19Our marriage was in a healthier place.
- 13:21Um, and I was doing a ministry, active,
- 13:24more traditional ministry through mission central, um, at
- 13:26the same time, kind of evenings and weekends
- 13:28sort of thing, um, beginning to, to do
- 13:30coursework and, and help other people discover how
- 13:32to, how to meet God in everyday life.
- 13:35So there, there was a lot of grace,
- 13:38even though still that original dream of being
- 13:41a dad and being a pastor.
- 13:43It was a million miles away.
- 13:45Um, anything else you want to share in
- 13:47this episode?
- 13:49Those dreams were a million miles away and
- 13:52the dream of being us was really coming
- 13:55to life.
- 13:55Yeah.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:58Well, let's pray on that note.
- 14:01Lord Jesus, thank you for your faithfulness.
- 14:03Um, even through the double death of a
- 14:06dream, bringing us close to you and close
- 14:08to each other.
- 14:09Um, we pray for any listeners who are
- 14:10in that place that you would sanctify them,
- 14:13even in the suffering they face and the
- 14:15sacrifices they face, perhaps the places they've ended
- 14:17up that they didn't expect that you would
- 14:20be with them, Jesus, do your work in
- 14:23us as we do our work with you.
- 14:29Thanks for listening.
