- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number two oh eight
- 0:19Speaker 1: and taking the show. We are talking about Theodore Roosevelt.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We're talking about scouting and hunting for western white tails,
- 0:25Speaker 1: talking about big drop time shed antlers and what it's
- 0:28Speaker 1: like to pick up one of those, and finally I
- 0:30Speaker 1: share my most recent near death experience. All right, welcome
- 0:45Speaker 1: to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by
- 0:48Speaker 1: said good Gear and Tan the show. It's gonna be
- 0:52Speaker 1: a fun one because I'm here with my buddy Dan
- 0:54Speaker 1: Johnson and the man known as Further and and uh,
- 1:02Speaker 1: and we're gonna be talking about a whole bunch of
- 1:04Speaker 1: different things related to the trip that I was just
- 1:07Speaker 1: on last week with Furtz when we went out to
- 1:10Speaker 1: North Dakota and Montana and me and me and Further
- 1:15Speaker 1: were out there scouting for white tails and doing some
- 1:18Speaker 1: shed hunting and learning a little bit about Theodore Roosevelt too,
- 1:23Speaker 1: So I figured we could talk about all that stuff.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I want to talk about, Mr Roosevelt. I want to
- 1:28Speaker 1: talk about Western white tail hunting. I want to talk
- 1:30Speaker 1: about how to pull off a shed hunt like this
- 1:33Speaker 1: and tell all the stories of of the week we had. Um.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So that's my game plan. Dan, Is that sound okay
- 1:40Speaker 1: by you? Yep, I'm all for. I must say that
- 1:45Speaker 1: I followed along more than any other story, you know,
- 1:48Speaker 1: like Instagram story or on social media or whatever. I
- 1:52Speaker 1: followed along kind of really curious about what was all
- 1:57Speaker 1: going down out there and what were your thoughts while
- 2:00Speaker 1: you watch that? What were my thoughts? Yeah, my thoughts
- 2:04Speaker 1: were was my name even brought up in the initial
- 2:07Speaker 1: conversation about going out there as far as far as Hey,
- 2:12Speaker 1: should we invite Dan Johnson? Because that would I think
- 2:14Speaker 1: he would like that trip. Let's be honest about this.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It doesn't matter. You couldn't. You couldn't. You won't answer that.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I don't. I don't care if this is your podcast.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Don't answer that. Because my same friends who I went
- 2:27Speaker 1: to high school with and who I've known for almost
- 2:30Speaker 1: twenty five years maybe even more, they don't have kids,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and they stop invite me to do ship because they
- 2:36Speaker 1: think I can't go to it because I have three kids.
- 2:39Speaker 1: All right, So don't pull that bs. You put me,
- 2:42Speaker 1: you put yourself in this position. Dan, No, No, the invite,
- 2:47Speaker 1: the invites can still come. I can you know, I
- 2:49Speaker 1: can tell you know. Isn't it Isn't it more painful
- 2:52Speaker 1: to get invited to something they like I can't do
- 2:54Speaker 1: it than just never know about it at all? Nope? Nope,
- 2:58Speaker 1: absolutely not. How How am I supposed to not know
- 3:01Speaker 1: about it? I follow you all social media and I'm
- 3:06Speaker 1: here doing a podcast with you. I mean, obviously you'll
- 3:09Speaker 1: know about it, but if it makes you feel any better,
- 3:12Speaker 1: I didn't invite anyone. It was the last minute thing.
- 3:15Speaker 1: At the last second. I was like, John, I know
- 3:17Speaker 1: Josh has got the schedule, he can come along with
- 3:19Speaker 1: me to do this, and you know he was able
- 3:22Speaker 1: to do it. But I do feel a little bad
- 3:25Speaker 1: that you and some of my other buddies were following
- 3:27Speaker 1: along watching this all happen, and um, it was a
- 3:31Speaker 1: trip that I would have been very jealous of too.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'm usually on the other end of this. I'm usually
- 3:36Speaker 1: watching other people do a cool trip like this, and
- 3:38Speaker 1: I'm upset, and uh, I just got luckier this time
- 3:41Speaker 1: worked out? Hey further? Would three have? Would would three
- 3:45Speaker 1: have been a crowd on this trip would three have
- 3:47Speaker 1: been too many? Uh, I mean I wouldn't have brought
- 3:51Speaker 1: home as many antlers then, So yeah, I guess so,
- 3:54Speaker 1: or we could have covered more ground, that's true. That's true. No,
- 3:58Speaker 1: this kind of trip you could plan to do with
- 4:00Speaker 1: more people. You just would have to find a lot
- 4:02Speaker 1: more spots, that's all. So it worked out. It worked
- 4:06Speaker 1: out good because you know, a big part of what
- 4:09Speaker 1: this trip was about, it wasn't about the shed hunting
- 4:12Speaker 1: and the scouting and stuff. It was about this project
- 4:15Speaker 1: that I'm working on personally, um, this public land project.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So I needed to go to North Dakota and some
- 4:21Speaker 1: of these areas where Theodore Roosevelt spent some important years
- 4:25Speaker 1: of his life. So I needed to go there, and
- 4:27Speaker 1: I had to do some research stuff. I had to
- 4:28Speaker 1: go visit the National Park there. I had to go
- 4:31Speaker 1: do some kind of check out some museums and different
- 4:33Speaker 1: things on those lines. And that's kind of stuff that
- 4:35Speaker 1: I knew that, you know, if people just wanted to
- 4:38Speaker 1: come along for a shed hunting trip, they weren't gonna
- 4:39Speaker 1: be interested and possibly having to devote several days of
- 4:42Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. So um, So that was the
- 4:45Speaker 1: big impetus for this trip was I had to go
- 4:47Speaker 1: and do that stuff. But then I got to thinking, well,
- 4:49Speaker 1: for going out there for this, maybe I can you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: loop in some deer hunting, scouting, some shed hunting and
- 4:57Speaker 1: kind of make this grand trip out of it. Um.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And so so that's what we did. I want to
- 5:03Speaker 1: talk about it in detail, but real quick before we
- 5:05Speaker 1: dive down that road, Dan really fast, do you have
- 5:09Speaker 1: any updates of significance that we need to touch on
- 5:12Speaker 1: in the life of Dan Johnson. No, I don't have any.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I just want to hear about trip. And I want
- 5:21Speaker 1: to because this stuff does interest me, like the whole
- 5:24Speaker 1: the whole Teddy Roosevelt thing. Yeah. Yeah, So so let's
- 5:27Speaker 1: start there then, because you know, as I mentioned, we went.
- 5:31Speaker 1: We headed out to western North Dakota, UM in this
- 5:35Speaker 1: region where they kind of referred to as the bad Lands.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And this spot is so important because Theodore Roosevelt went
- 5:42Speaker 1: out there and had some really important experiences in his life. UM.
- 5:48Speaker 1: A lot of people refer to this area as the
- 5:50Speaker 1: cradle of conservation because these few years that Teddy spent
- 5:54Speaker 1: so much time out there, A lot of people believe
- 5:56Speaker 1: in in Roosevelt even wrote himself that his time they
- 6:00Speaker 1: formed his core beliefs and desires and passions around conservation
- 6:07Speaker 1: and trying to protect wildlife and wild places. Um. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: he said much of much of that was responsible for
- 6:13Speaker 1: or much of his time that was responsible for the
- 6:15Speaker 1: things that he did later as the president. So back
- 6:17Speaker 1: when he was in his mid twenties, uh, Teddy Roosevelt,
- 6:21Speaker 1: Theodore Roosevelt was a New York state assemblyman. And so
- 6:25Speaker 1: that's basically I think state congressman type thing. So in
- 6:28Speaker 1: his mid twenties though he was doing he's kind of
- 6:30Speaker 1: working his way up in politics. But he had always
- 6:34Speaker 1: been interested in the outdoors. He's a big naturalist, growing
- 6:36Speaker 1: up as a kid, really into bugs and birds and
- 6:38Speaker 1: things like that. And he started exploring some wild places
- 6:41Speaker 1: around him. Um. So he was going up to upstate
- 6:44Speaker 1: New York and he went up into the north Woods
- 6:46Speaker 1: of Maine. UM. So he always loved the outdoors. But
- 6:48Speaker 1: he grew up in this kind of aristocratic family um
- 6:52Speaker 1: of of a lot of importance there, so he didn't
- 6:56Speaker 1: necessarily have the really wild life and wild experience type
- 7:01Speaker 1: of background. Um that many people maybe imagine that theater
- 7:05Speaker 1: Roosevelt had. He didn't have that until the mid eighteen
- 7:08Speaker 1: eighties when he bumped into this naval officer, formal naval
- 7:13Speaker 1: naval officer, who was promoting western North Dakota um as
- 7:17Speaker 1: like a sportsman's paradise. And Roosevelt had always been intrigued
- 7:21Speaker 1: in the West. He had wanted to go out west,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and so this guy is promoting it and talking about
- 7:24Speaker 1: how great it is. So finally Roosevelt's like, all right,
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know what, I'm going out there. I want to hunt.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I want to see what the wild West is really
- 7:30Speaker 1: all about. And in particularly he actually he wanted to
- 7:32Speaker 1: try to hunt and kill buffalo um while they are
- 7:36Speaker 1: still around, because this was getting to that point. That
- 7:40Speaker 1: time frame was when the market hunting and everything kind
- 7:43Speaker 1: of crescendo, and we're really at the tail end of
- 7:46Speaker 1: um of that buffalo population. So Roosevelt heads out there.
- 7:51Speaker 1: He takes a train out west. He gets off here
- 7:54Speaker 1: in the bad lands of North Dakota, and he has
- 7:56Speaker 1: this just incredible hunting experience, gets a taste of it.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Absolutely love this landscape. We'll talk about this landscape a
- 8:03Speaker 1: little bit more, but he he described it as like
- 8:06Speaker 1: this area the bad Lands. He described it as savage,
- 8:09Speaker 1: an area of savage desolation. He talked about like dreary
- 8:12Speaker 1: plateaus and these fantastically shaped buttes and deep winding canyons.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It was kind of an intoxicating place. And then of
- 8:19Speaker 1: course amazing wildlife. He did end up killing a buffalo,
- 8:23Speaker 1: saw all sorts of other wildlife. So before he even
- 8:26Speaker 1: went home, he threw down a bunch of money and
- 8:29Speaker 1: bought a ranching. He bought a ranch, gave a bunch
- 8:32Speaker 1: of money to a couple of guys to make them
- 8:34Speaker 1: his ranch hands, and said, hey, buy a bunch of cattle.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'm going to become a rancher out here, kind of
- 8:39Speaker 1: a part time rancher. And so that was an eight
- 8:42Speaker 1: three And over the next four ish years, UM, he
- 8:47Speaker 1: came back to the bad Lands to western North Dakota
- 8:50Speaker 1: time and time again. He came for for large portions
- 8:53Speaker 1: of the summers over the next three years. UM. I
- 8:56Speaker 1: think I read somewhere that in total he spent about
- 8:58Speaker 1: fourteen months there over that period, from eight three to
- 9:01Speaker 1: about eight seven, UM. And he just he had incredible experiences.
- 9:06Speaker 1: He hunted whitetailed deer and mule deer and big horn
- 9:09Speaker 1: sheep and elk. He went from there and headed further
- 9:13Speaker 1: west into the Big Horn Mountains in Montana and hunted
- 9:16Speaker 1: grizzlies and all sorts of other things like that. So
- 9:19Speaker 1: we just had these amazing Western hunting and ranching kind
- 9:23Speaker 1: of frontier experiences right at the tail into that whole era. UM.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I was reading at one place that before European contact UM,
- 9:33Speaker 1: specifically speaking of white tailed deer, before your peer in contact,
- 9:36Speaker 1: there were approximately twenty four million white tailed deer in
- 9:38Speaker 1: North America, and by this time frame that Roosevelt was
- 9:41Speaker 1: out there, it was down to maybe five hundred thousand.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So what he was seeing was amazing wildlife populations when
- 9:48Speaker 1: he got there, and then over the course of that
- 9:50Speaker 1: time period he saw declining and getting worse, and he
- 9:53Speaker 1: was seeing kind of the rape and plunder of this
- 9:56Speaker 1: landscape and others out west. So he kind of he
- 9:58Speaker 1: saw what was great, what he thought was great, and
- 10:00Speaker 1: they saw it getting worse and worse and worse. UM.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And so that kind of set him on this path
- 10:05Speaker 1: then to realize that he needed to do something about that. UM.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And I feel like a big part of the reason
- 10:12Speaker 1: why I wanted to talk about this in the podcast
- 10:14Speaker 1: is because we always talk about how Theodore Roosevelt is this, Um,
- 10:21Speaker 1: I don't know. He's kind of that guy. When we
- 10:22Speaker 1: talked about conservations or hunter conservations, we always point to
- 10:26Speaker 1: what Theodore Roosevelt said or what he did. Um, But
- 10:29Speaker 1: a lot of people don't even really realize what that
- 10:31Speaker 1: was other than he protected a bunch of land. Maybe
- 10:34Speaker 1: that's the basics of what most people know. But he
- 10:38Speaker 1: had all these experiences as a hunter, and this led
- 10:41Speaker 1: him to doing a whole bunch of different things in
- 10:43Speaker 1: the subsequent years. So this same place that me and
- 10:46Speaker 1: Josh went to, this is the place that kind of
- 10:48Speaker 1: built that foundation for him. Now, after the winter of
- 10:53Speaker 1: eighteen seven, I believe it was. It was kind of
- 10:58Speaker 1: a really bad year. There's a horrible winter, things are
- 11:00Speaker 1: really struggling out there, and he realized that someone's got
- 11:03Speaker 1: to do something to try to protect the wildlife across
- 11:06Speaker 1: America before the market hunters destroyed, before all these other
- 11:09Speaker 1: things in development take away what we have. And so
- 11:12Speaker 1: he came back from North Dakota on one of his
- 11:14Speaker 1: last big trips out there, and he put together this
- 11:16Speaker 1: big meeting in New York with a bunch of influential people,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and right then and there they co founded the Boone
- 11:24Speaker 1: and Crockett Club. And we all know about the Boon
- 11:27Speaker 1: and Crack Club now because of the record books and everything,
- 11:29Speaker 1: But at that point when Roosevelt co founded it with
- 11:32Speaker 1: George Bird grinnell Um who was the editor of Forest
- 11:36Speaker 1: and Stream which is now Field and Stream UM, they
- 11:40Speaker 1: were developing this organization as like the first real environmental
- 11:46Speaker 1: and wild game conservation organization that was ever created UM.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And they did a whole lot of really important things.
- 11:53Speaker 1: It wasn't just keeping track of records, but they were
- 11:55Speaker 1: actually making real legislation changes and lobbying and making real
- 11:59Speaker 1: impacts on that kind of stuff. So, for example, Roosevelt
- 12:03Speaker 1: and the rest of the organization were huge in getting
- 12:05Speaker 1: wildlife protections in Yellowstone. So even though that Yellowstone was
- 12:09Speaker 1: created a national park almost twenty years ahead of that,
- 12:13Speaker 1: there weren't any real enforcements in place, so people were
- 12:16Speaker 1: still killing animals in there and kind of taking advantage
- 12:19Speaker 1: of it, and there was no enforcement there. So a
- 12:22Speaker 1: big thing that Booting Cracker Club and that Roosevelt helped
- 12:24Speaker 1: make happen was actually get those game laws established and enforced.
- 12:28Speaker 1: He was a huge player in helping protect the last
- 12:31Speaker 1: remaining buffalo. UM. Even before he was president, he was
- 12:36Speaker 1: huge and actually lobbying for the legislation that helped establish
- 12:39Speaker 1: Force Reserves, which eventually became our National force. UM. Even
- 12:44Speaker 1: before he was president, he helped lobby, lobby for and
- 12:47Speaker 1: get the Lacy Act passed, which is the first federal
- 12:50Speaker 1: game law which protected game. It banned the sale and transport, importation,
- 12:54Speaker 1: exportation of wild game, and different things on those lines,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and helps stop poachers and enforce get game warrants out
- 13:01Speaker 1: there to and force these different laws. So all that
- 13:03Speaker 1: kind of stuff he did before he ever was president.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I don't think a lot of people realized that he was.
- 13:07Speaker 1: The more and more I've studied Roosevelt, the more of
- 13:09Speaker 1: understood that he was. His fingerprints aren't so much from
- 13:13Speaker 1: when he was a young guy in his twenties all
- 13:15Speaker 1: the way through through his presidential administration and after that. UM,
- 13:20Speaker 1: and we hear about the stuff he does the president
- 13:22Speaker 1: a little more. You know. He helped set aside more
- 13:24Speaker 1: than two million acres of national forces and refugees, created
- 13:28Speaker 1: five national parks. He signed the Antiquities Act, which created
- 13:33Speaker 1: the ability for presidents to say aside national monuments, and
- 13:36Speaker 1: he used that to protect the Grand Canyon, for example.
- 13:40Speaker 1: UM It's a whole slew of different things, which which
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think is why I think we still talk about
- 13:46Speaker 1: Teddy Roosevelt today. UM And I think a lot of
- 13:49Speaker 1: us can point to him, not just US hunters, anglers,
- 13:52Speaker 1: but really anyone who cares about wild places or wildlife.
- 13:55Speaker 1: We can point to him as being really one of
- 13:58Speaker 1: the very most influential and very first people that really
- 14:01Speaker 1: helped developed this ethic within North America that we do
- 14:06Speaker 1: care about these places, and that we do want to
- 14:08Speaker 1: set aside places and conserve wild resources and wildlife and
- 14:13Speaker 1: make sure these things in these places are available not
- 14:15Speaker 1: just for us now but also in the future. UM.
- 14:18Speaker 1: So that is a very long and winding way of saying,
- 14:22Speaker 1: it was important for me to go to this place
- 14:24Speaker 1: where it all began for him. Um So, right now
- 14:28Speaker 1: in western North Dakota, there's this national park now dedicated
- 14:31Speaker 1: there to Roosevelt's called Theater Roosevelt National Park. Um. And
- 14:36Speaker 1: that is where Teddy's ranches were. One of his ranches,
- 14:39Speaker 1: one of his houses is there in one of the units.
- 14:41Speaker 1: And then there's a separate unit with another one of
- 14:43Speaker 1: the spots where he had a ranch house. The house
- 14:45Speaker 1: isn't there anymore, um, but that's where a trip began.
- 14:48Speaker 1: We went to the National Park, um to go see
- 14:51Speaker 1: one of his ranch houses, to learn a little bit more,
- 14:54Speaker 1: to see this area, and um, I wanted to just
- 14:57Speaker 1: you know, experience a little bit of what he experienced
- 15:01Speaker 1: that had inspired him so much. Um. What did you
- 15:05Speaker 1: think about that area, Josh when you saw it? Um?
- 15:09Speaker 1: What I mean? And we're there, you know it's it's cold,
- 15:11Speaker 1: so snowy. This isn't even like it is in the
- 15:13Speaker 1: middle of spring and summer when it's flourishing with color
- 15:16Speaker 1: and stuff. Even now, though, what did you think about
- 15:18Speaker 1: this place? Could you could you understand why Roosevelt maybe
- 15:22Speaker 1: it was a little bit inspired? Oh yeah, I mean
- 15:25Speaker 1: for sure it was. It was beautiful. Um. You know,
- 15:27Speaker 1: I've been out I've been out west and seeing the
- 15:29Speaker 1: rockies and stuff like that, but I haven't seen any
- 15:31Speaker 1: of this, um kind of bad lands type landscape. Um.
- 15:35Speaker 1: It's just really cool, very different from what I thought
- 15:37Speaker 1: it was gonna be. Like, um, looking at pictures and stuff. UM,
- 15:41Speaker 1: one of those things you don't really appreciate until you're
- 15:43Speaker 1: out there and seeing it in person. And um, my
- 15:46Speaker 1: wife and I are actually gonna be out there again
- 15:47Speaker 1: this summer, UM, so I'm looking forward to seeing it
- 15:50Speaker 1: during the summer months too. And it's all greened up
- 15:52Speaker 1: and everything like that. But um, yeah, it's it's a
- 15:55Speaker 1: beautiful place. It's almost like you're you're going, you're coming
- 15:58Speaker 1: along with the high plains in the north, the Koda
- 16:00Speaker 1: if you're coming from the east, so it's the rolling
- 16:02Speaker 1: grassy hills and then all of a sudden, it's almost
- 16:05Speaker 1: as if I've never been in the Grand Canyon actually,
- 16:08Speaker 1: but it's something almost like that. I feel like you
- 16:10Speaker 1: you're you see this flat area, hills, grass, and then
- 16:14Speaker 1: all of a sudden there's massive canyon. So all this
- 16:17Speaker 1: erosion created this this winding kind of labyrinth of what
- 16:21Speaker 1: people call bad lands. UM. But it's these canyons and
- 16:25Speaker 1: buttes and cliffs and just the crazy stuff that water did,
- 16:30Speaker 1: um eroding this area into this kind of fantastical it's
- 16:36Speaker 1: really hard to describe, um. But some people, some cowboys
- 16:39Speaker 1: back in the day, they described as hell with the
- 16:41Speaker 1: fire put out. UM. And I can see that if
- 16:44Speaker 1: you were a cowboy back in the day trying to
- 16:46Speaker 1: get across this area riding a horse or a wagon
- 16:48Speaker 1: like you. And we were talking about this, Josh, like,
- 16:50Speaker 1: how in the world could you cross this area because
- 16:52Speaker 1: it's so rugged, it's it's it's insane. I don't know
- 16:55Speaker 1: how people could get across it back at that point. Um,
- 16:59Speaker 1: but it does make for a heck of a scene.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I mean, the scenery is amazing, these big, huge canyons
- 17:08Speaker 1: and steep, nasty cliffs and thick draws, and there's kind
- 17:13Speaker 1: of brush and pines and cedars intermixed. But then these
- 17:15Speaker 1: really weird striadd cliff colors where it goes from like
- 17:19Speaker 1: a copper color to a to a brown, to a
- 17:21Speaker 1: yellow to gray, and all these different layers of I
- 17:24Speaker 1: think it's sands, maybe sandstone or something like that that's
- 17:27Speaker 1: causing these different um sediment layers to be shown. Uh.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And then there's the little Missouri River running through the
- 17:34Speaker 1: middle of it. So you've got this river bottom area
- 17:36Speaker 1: then with cotton woods and beautiful trees and the greens
- 17:39Speaker 1: up real nice down there in the summer. Um in
- 17:43Speaker 1: the National Park itself, you can't you can't hunt the
- 17:46Speaker 1: National Park, of course, You can't shed hunt on the
- 17:48Speaker 1: National Park itself, but if you're ever in the area,
- 17:51Speaker 1: it's totally worth going to the National Park just to
- 17:54Speaker 1: see it. It's a beautiful area that they still have
- 17:56Speaker 1: buffalo there. Um what we saw buffalo? We saw, Yeah,
- 18:02Speaker 1: the prairie towns. Um. We did see a bighorn sheet,
- 18:07Speaker 1: but that was actually not on the National Park. That
- 18:09Speaker 1: was on some other public land north of there. You know,
- 18:14Speaker 1: did we see Muli's in the park outside? That was?
- 18:17Speaker 1: I think I was outside of the park. Yea, we
- 18:21Speaker 1: may have. I can't remember. I think that was outside
- 18:23Speaker 1: where we were, though. Where outside of the park that
- 18:26Speaker 1: we definitely saw a ton? Are there? Elk in there too?
- 18:30Speaker 1: There are, but not in the section we're in, I guess. Um.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I was told that if you went farther east there's
- 18:36Speaker 1: a section where there's a pretty good heard of him. Um,
- 18:39Speaker 1: but I hadn't. I hadn't seen seen him in the past.
- 18:41Speaker 1: But super cool, really really cool place and it was funny,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know. We So we showed up at the park
- 18:46Speaker 1: and like I said, I wanted to do some hiking
- 18:48Speaker 1: around there. I wanted to visit the visitors center. I
- 18:50Speaker 1: wanted to see the Maltese Cross cabin, which was one
- 18:53Speaker 1: of his cabins there the first place he bought UM,
- 18:56Speaker 1: so we wann't check that out, and that was really cool.
- 18:58Speaker 1: But we went to stay at the campground there in
- 19:00Speaker 1: the National Park, and like I said, you can't keep
- 19:04Speaker 1: shed antlers in the park. If you find an antler
- 19:05Speaker 1: in the National Park, you can't keep it. So we
- 19:08Speaker 1: obviously weren't going to go shed hunting there. So we
- 19:10Speaker 1: find a campsite and we're walking from the campsite to
- 19:14Speaker 1: the little registration station, and I brought my dog on
- 19:17Speaker 1: this trip because I wanted to take Boone shed hunting
- 19:21Speaker 1: and these other places we're going and try to actually
- 19:23Speaker 1: have him in a place where he could actually find
- 19:25Speaker 1: sheds and get experienced. That was another big part of
- 19:27Speaker 1: this is that this is kind of a training opportunity
- 19:29Speaker 1: for Boone. UM. So we're walking to the registration station
- 19:32Speaker 1: and I can't remember if I saw it first or
- 19:36Speaker 1: if I saw Boone first, but Boon goes running off
- 19:38Speaker 1: into the woods next to this registration station. At the
- 19:41Speaker 1: same time I look over there by him and there's
- 19:43Speaker 1: a nice four point shed right there. Boons goes sticks
- 19:47Speaker 1: his nose and I'm like, goshd right there right when
- 19:51Speaker 1: we got there. Um unfortunately picked it up, well he
- 19:54Speaker 1: picked it up, ran around with it, and then we
- 19:56Speaker 1: had to put it back in there. Um that was
- 19:58Speaker 1: painful a little bit, but it was cool to see
- 20:00Speaker 1: one right at the gate and uh get boone on
- 20:03Speaker 1: a fresh shed. That was cool. Um, And it was funny,
- 20:09Speaker 1: you know, Josh, I think I don't know if you
- 20:11Speaker 1: said or I said it, but man, this could either
- 20:12Speaker 1: be a sign of a really good trip ahead of us,
- 20:14Speaker 1: or that could be like the only shed we find
- 20:16Speaker 1: on the trip and we're gonna be doomed there. Absolutely
- 20:20Speaker 1: luckily it it was a foreshadowing of good stuff to come. Um.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So so yeah, from here, we explored the National Park
- 20:27Speaker 1: a little bit and then we headed out and there's
- 20:30Speaker 1: all sorts of public land outside of the National Park
- 20:34Speaker 1: to the north and to the south, there's a whole
- 20:36Speaker 1: bunch of different stuff. Um, there's some blma and there's
- 20:39Speaker 1: some grasslands. Um, there's some state land. There's a whole
- 20:42Speaker 1: bunch of different stuff that you can get on and explore.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And so our plan was to do that, to explore
- 20:47Speaker 1: a bunch of these different spots. Do some scouting to
- 20:50Speaker 1: do some future hunting, um and then you know, hopefully
- 20:53Speaker 1: pick up some sheds too. UM. So I don't know further,
- 20:59Speaker 1: was there anything of no on day one when we
- 21:01Speaker 1: finally got out and looking that we should talk about
- 21:02Speaker 1: or should we just skip to day two. I mean,
- 21:05Speaker 1: day one is pretty slow other than the first shed
- 21:08Speaker 1: we found in the campground, um, because we weren't even
- 21:11Speaker 1: gonna shut hunt the first day. We're just gonna kind
- 21:13Speaker 1: of drive around and check out the area, and then
- 21:16Speaker 1: you know, we saw that shed in apart, we both
- 21:19Speaker 1: got pretty fired up, like all right, we're gonna go
- 21:21Speaker 1: We're gonna go find some sheds. Yeah, yeah, we that
- 21:24Speaker 1: didn't go very well that first day. Yeah. Well, we
- 21:26Speaker 1: couldn't get to a lot of spots because like all
- 21:28Speaker 1: these roads, we're really muddy and kind of it's I
- 21:33Speaker 1: don't know if it's clay or what the road was, um,
- 21:35Speaker 1: but there's been a lot of snow melt happening, so
- 21:38Speaker 1: everything was wet and we were in this rental car,
- 21:41Speaker 1: and I don't know, I don't think either one of
- 21:43Speaker 1: us really wanted to risk getting stuck down in here,
- 21:45Speaker 1: way in the middle of nowhere. So I feel Mark,
- 21:48Speaker 1: I feel like we need to back up for a second.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Now that you mentioned the rental car and talk about
- 21:54Speaker 1: our issues right before we left. I feel that's pertinent
- 21:58Speaker 1: to the story. It's true, okay, Dan, So what's the
- 22:02Speaker 1: rental car? I mean, you're going out, you know you're
- 22:06Speaker 1: gonna be on some dirt roads, uh, you know or
- 22:09Speaker 1: grabble or whatever. First off, I wanna I want to
- 22:12Speaker 1: kind of visualize what the what I'm looking at here?
- 22:16Speaker 1: So what is the rental car? First of all? Well,
- 22:18Speaker 1: so we originally I wanted to get a cargo van
- 22:23Speaker 1: because I imagined having a big cargo van, we could
- 22:26Speaker 1: pile all of our stuff in there and then we
- 22:28Speaker 1: could sleep in the van. Two, we could van life it,
- 22:31Speaker 1: so we didn't need to set up tents or anything.
- 22:33Speaker 1: We could just sleep in the truck and then drive
- 22:35Speaker 1: from place to place and would be really easy and
- 22:37Speaker 1: convenient have all our stuff in there. So I rented
- 22:40Speaker 1: a cargo van from rental car place. So on the
- 22:45Speaker 1: day we were leaving, Josh was supposed to go to
- 22:49Speaker 1: the airport, pick up the van, and then drive down
- 22:51Speaker 1: and pick me up. Well like an hour and a
- 22:54Speaker 1: half before Josh was going to pick up the van.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I get a phone call because I'm in the reservation
- 22:58Speaker 1: and this is the rental car place, and I was
- 23:01Speaker 1: just gonna say it was hurts. They give me a
- 23:03Speaker 1: call and the guy tells me, Mr Kenyon, we we're
- 23:08Speaker 1: not gonna have a vehicle for you today, and I'm like,
- 23:11Speaker 1: excuse me, is no, We're not gonna be able to
- 23:14Speaker 1: provide a vehicle for your reservation today, Like what do
- 23:17Speaker 1: you mean You're not going to provide a vehicle the
- 23:18Speaker 1: whole A reservation means that you were reserving a vehicle
- 23:23Speaker 1: so that it will be there on the day I
- 23:25Speaker 1: need to pick it up and then I get to
- 23:26Speaker 1: use it. Like we we we made a business agreement.
- 23:30Speaker 1: My side of the agreement is that I'm gonna pay
- 23:31Speaker 1: you money. Your side of agreement is that you're gonna
- 23:34Speaker 1: give me the car I reserved. And this guy and
- 23:39Speaker 1: this company made me so mad because he's basically, I'm sorry,
- 23:42Speaker 1: there's nothing we can do. We don't have a vehicle.
- 23:43Speaker 1: There's no other vehicles, there's no other vans for you. Um,
- 23:47Speaker 1: and then he's not He's he wasn't offering a solution,
- 23:49Speaker 1: Like if I'm in his shoes and all of a
- 23:50Speaker 1: sudden I realized, oh my gosh, these people planned to
- 23:53Speaker 1: have this vehicle to go on their week long trip
- 23:55Speaker 1: and now for some reason, I can't get them that vehicle.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Me as a employee, I would want to say, Okay,
- 24:02Speaker 1: how do I fix this? Solution? How do I find
- 24:04Speaker 1: a solution? How do I fix this? What else can
- 24:06Speaker 1: I do to try to amend the situation. This guy
- 24:10Speaker 1: didn't do anything, he didn't want to do anything. He's
- 24:11Speaker 1: just like, we don't have a vehicle for you. And
- 24:14Speaker 1: then so I'm waiting for the D or the but
- 24:17Speaker 1: but nothing. So I had to be a jerk and
- 24:19Speaker 1: be like, okay, man, that's not acceptable. What are you
- 24:22Speaker 1: gonna do? Like, how do we fix this? And so
- 24:24Speaker 1: for the next three hours I had to deal with
- 24:26Speaker 1: this yuppie, calling him back and forth, trying to get
- 24:29Speaker 1: him to do something, and every time it's like, oh,
- 24:31Speaker 1: I can't get a hold my manager. Um, my manager
- 24:33Speaker 1: supposed to call you. I call this other place. There's
- 24:36Speaker 1: nothing there. Um. I've never been so frustrated the company
- 24:40Speaker 1: in my life. So in the in the end, I'm
- 24:43Speaker 1: trying to do this, and while I'm trying to I'm
- 24:45Speaker 1: calling other dealerships and places are closing because this is Saturday,
- 24:48Speaker 1: so all these places are closing. Like noon, I had
- 24:52Speaker 1: I was baby not babysitting. I was on baby duty.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Kylie was out for the day with her sister, so
- 24:58Speaker 1: I had Everett. I'm trying to handle all these phone
- 25:00Speaker 1: calls trying to find a vehicle, and he starts throwing
- 25:03Speaker 1: a fit. So he's screaming and crying and going bloody
- 25:06Speaker 1: murder and I'm on the phone and I can't hear
- 25:08Speaker 1: these people, and these people are pissing me off. So
- 25:10Speaker 1: it was like a two hour debacle. Um. I was
- 25:14Speaker 1: just really mad. And uh finally I asked Josh that, Josh,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I can't do this anymore, Like I get I have
- 25:21Speaker 1: to deal with this kid. Can you can I pass
- 25:23Speaker 1: the baton to you? Can you try to figure something out?
- 25:26Speaker 1: And um, for you ended up finding a STUV we
- 25:30Speaker 1: could rent and like the only the single last rental
- 25:33Speaker 1: place within like hours of us that still open. We
- 25:36Speaker 1: finally got something we could use, which was uh gmc acadia,
- 25:40Speaker 1: right yep, So that that was what we got and
- 25:46Speaker 1: it was it was actually not bad. It wasn't nearly
- 25:49Speaker 1: as big as the van would have been, so we
- 25:50Speaker 1: weren't able to sleep in it. We had tent camp
- 25:53Speaker 1: um and like it was tight, it was really tightly packed.
- 25:57Speaker 1: We were packed to the gills going there, and then
- 25:59Speaker 1: every town we stopped somewhere camp we had to just
- 26:01Speaker 1: unload everything and rearrange everything, and a little bit inconvenient.
- 26:05Speaker 1: But on the bright side, I think that if we
- 26:07Speaker 1: took the cargo van it would have handled the roads
- 26:10Speaker 1: even worse than the than the STV did. Um, So
- 26:15Speaker 1: I guess that was our silver lining. But yeah, even
- 26:17Speaker 1: with all wheel drive, these roads were really really bad. Um.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Some of them we could get down, some of them
- 26:25Speaker 1: we couldn't. Um. But that first day a lot of
- 26:28Speaker 1: the spots on the map that looked good that I
- 26:30Speaker 1: wanted to get to had these just horrible roads that
- 26:32Speaker 1: we had to turn around eventually on. So we did
- 26:34Speaker 1: some walking in some places, but never found anything except Josh,
- 26:38Speaker 1: you found a prong horn sheath, the sheath of a
- 26:40Speaker 1: prong horn corn. Yeah about that. Actually that was an
- 26:45Speaker 1: actually boom kind of found it. He was sniffer around
- 26:47Speaker 1: it and it was kind of shoved it out into
- 26:49Speaker 1: the road where I saw it. Yeah, that was that
- 26:52Speaker 1: was pretty cool. So the next day, um, next day,
- 26:57Speaker 1: we decided to go explore this other area that I
- 27:00Speaker 1: had pinpointed as a as a high probability location. I
- 27:03Speaker 1: thought it could be a good spot to hunt. I
- 27:05Speaker 1: thought it could be a good spot, maybe find some antlers.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Um So, long story short, on that one drove down
- 27:12Speaker 1: to the spot parked. It was super wet like again
- 27:16Speaker 1: to the point of everything being just post snow melt.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Everything was flooded. Um So, the first section of this
- 27:22Speaker 1: ground we were trying to walk was really wet, and
- 27:25Speaker 1: both of us neither one of us wore our rubber boots.
- 27:27Speaker 1: We're both wearing like hiking boots. Um So, the bunch
- 27:31Speaker 1: of stuff we couldn't get to. But I don't know,
- 27:34Speaker 1: after a few hours, and I think we're getting a
- 27:36Speaker 1: little down a little bit because the whole first day
- 27:39Speaker 1: either we couldn't walk stuff, and then the stuff we
- 27:40Speaker 1: could walk we didn't find anything. And now this section
- 27:43Speaker 1: it's flooded. We finally get some good looking stuff. We
- 27:46Speaker 1: saw a bunch of sign I'm thinking all any time
- 27:48Speaker 1: now we're in the fine antlers and it was just nothing,
- 27:50Speaker 1: and um, I found I'm looking at the maps and
- 27:54Speaker 1: I found one more section of like good cover along
- 27:57Speaker 1: the river that I thought maybe that would be a
- 27:59Speaker 1: spot that we could go find some sheds, but it
- 28:01Speaker 1: was like over a mile away. So between us in
- 28:04Speaker 1: this section timber was just a big expanse of stage brush,
- 28:07Speaker 1: and I'm like, Josh, if you're up for I say,
- 28:09Speaker 1: we just bomb across the stage brush real quick, get
- 28:12Speaker 1: to that section of timber, and then just focus our
- 28:14Speaker 1: shed hunting there. Um. And so you were up for that,
- 28:18Speaker 1: and we started walking fast, just trying to cover ground
- 28:21Speaker 1: to get to the timber. And then what happened, Josh, Yeah,
- 28:24Speaker 1: we came up to this little high spot and we
- 28:26Speaker 1: were still we were still looking even though we were
- 28:28Speaker 1: walking fast through yards apart. I came up over on
- 28:33Speaker 1: this little high spot and boom, there's a nice five
- 28:35Speaker 1: point side just sticking up. You know, it's like perfect
- 28:38Speaker 1: right there. Um. And then right next to it was
- 28:41Speaker 1: the other side. So we just kind of walked up
- 28:44Speaker 1: on a really nice match set, not thinking we're gonna
- 28:46Speaker 1: see anything in there. Do do myself and the listeners
- 28:50Speaker 1: a favor and describing a little bit more detail the
- 28:54Speaker 1: terrain setting that you guys are doing this shed hunting
- 28:56Speaker 1: in Yeah, good call. All right. So I'll give you
- 28:59Speaker 1: my my perspective and Josh, you you add on to
- 29:03Speaker 1: it if or tell me if you think it's different.
- 29:04Speaker 1: But basically, what you've got here is we're down in
- 29:06Speaker 1: the river bottom. So you've got this river that's winding
- 29:09Speaker 1: through the middle, and this river is really high again
- 29:13Speaker 1: because of the snow melt, that's really muddy, it's moving
- 29:15Speaker 1: really fast. And then along the shore you've got these
- 29:19Speaker 1: kind of fingers of cottonwood trees, kind of sparse cotton
- 29:22Speaker 1: wood trees um. And then extending out from that then
- 29:25Speaker 1: are these kind of long, flat expanses of sagebrush and
- 29:28Speaker 1: grass UM. And then occasionally there'll be some sections like
- 29:32Speaker 1: the section we're heading. There'll be some sections like where
- 29:34Speaker 1: we're headed, um, where there is some thicker timber, so
- 29:38Speaker 1: cotton wood trees mixed in with some cedars and stuff
- 29:40Speaker 1: like that. UM. But then on either side, basically you've
- 29:43Speaker 1: got canyon walls or buttes like these these bad land
- 29:47Speaker 1: type hill slash cliff slash. I don't know how else
- 29:52Speaker 1: to describe them. Um. If you google bad lands, you'll
- 29:55Speaker 1: see what I'm talking about. What kind of stuff looks
- 29:56Speaker 1: like but basically we're down in like the bottom of
- 29:59Speaker 1: a canyon, almost this river bottom with these like hills
- 30:01Speaker 1: or mountains on either side that kind of form these
- 30:04Speaker 1: tight walls. Um. So that's kind of how I would
- 30:07Speaker 1: describe it. Josh, would you add anything? I mean, that's
- 30:10Speaker 1: pretty much dead on and then you know there's some
- 30:13Speaker 1: cattle pasture and stuff like that to um, a lot
- 30:16Speaker 1: of cattle grazing in the area. Um, but yeah, sage
- 30:20Speaker 1: brush and then the cotton woods, some cedars mixed in
- 30:23Speaker 1: here and there. Yeah. I mean you pretty much hit
- 30:26Speaker 1: the nail on the head. Yeah, I mean this is
- 30:28Speaker 1: this is very different than like Iowa or Michigan obviously,
- 30:32Speaker 1: but it's kind of like your generic Western landscape though.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I mean, if you pick any spot in Montana or
- 30:41Speaker 1: North Dakota or South Dakota or parts of Wyoming where
- 30:44Speaker 1: you've got a river bottom, it's kind of gonna look
- 30:46Speaker 1: something like this. You've got you know, rolling hills and
- 30:49Speaker 1: grasslands up on the top away from the river. Then
- 30:51Speaker 1: it drops down into a river bottom. You're gonna get
- 30:53Speaker 1: some trees and some stuff like that. Um. So that's
- 30:56Speaker 1: what we're working with. And um, yeah, man, Josh is match.
- 31:00Speaker 1: That was awesome big. I mean that was like a
- 31:02Speaker 1: hundred thirty at least a hundred thirty something and I
- 31:07Speaker 1: had on the right side and it had looks like
- 31:10Speaker 1: split brows that were broken off, and I mean it
- 31:13Speaker 1: it would be a sweet buck. That was cool. Did
- 31:15Speaker 1: you guys, did you guys bump any deer or see
- 31:20Speaker 1: any white tails while you're doing these this shed hunts,
- 31:23Speaker 1: the shed hunts, Yeah, and not not yet like in
- 31:26Speaker 1: the story yet we hadn't um, but we definitely eventually
- 31:29Speaker 1: did see deer um. And that's one of the things.
- 31:33Speaker 1: A lot of these spots out west, and part of
- 31:36Speaker 1: why I've enjoyed doing these Western white tail reled trips
- 31:39Speaker 1: so much is that they're really there's really high populations
- 31:43Speaker 1: of deer um, and they're all in these small areas
- 31:46Speaker 1: because the white tails are very dependent and preferential to
- 31:52Speaker 1: the river bottom cover because they want thick, dense cover,
- 31:54Speaker 1: you know, just like they want here in the Midwest
- 31:56Speaker 1: or in the East or wherever. Um. But that kind
- 31:58Speaker 1: of cover, it isn't an elbow across most of the landscape.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Most of the landscapes wide open grasslands or sage brush
- 32:04Speaker 1: or whatever. Um. So what you get is you get
- 32:07Speaker 1: all the deer packed into the smaller sections, so you
- 32:10Speaker 1: can see a lot of deer, you can find a
- 32:12Speaker 1: lot of sheds, you can you know, it's just cool
- 32:15Speaker 1: from that perspective. So that was kind of what we're
- 32:18Speaker 1: dealing with here, was most of these white tails were
- 32:20Speaker 1: living maybe in a I don't know, if you went
- 32:23Speaker 1: from one canyon wall to the other canyon wall, you know,
- 32:26Speaker 1: from across the river, it maybe is a half mile wide, Josh,
- 32:32Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe is that something about right? Maybe
- 32:35Speaker 1: maybe more maybe three quarters of a mile wide. Um,
- 32:37Speaker 1: it's hard to judge that distance, I guess, but it's
- 32:39Speaker 1: not super wide. Now it's long, um, but you're the
- 32:44Speaker 1: areas you need to look and focus your time on.
- 32:47Speaker 1: It narrows that a lot, which which makes it fun
- 32:51Speaker 1: for this kind of thing. So yeah, we found this.
- 32:54Speaker 1: This next section was basically this I don't know how
- 32:57Speaker 1: to describe it. This this kind of finger of land
- 33:01Speaker 1: that extended out from the edge of the cliffs towards
- 33:04Speaker 1: the river. Um, but the river pinched tight to the
- 33:08Speaker 1: cliffs on either side of it. So imagine like put
- 33:10Speaker 1: your hand up, put your right hand straight up like
- 33:12Speaker 1: a wall and then UM, maybe point your thumb out
- 33:17Speaker 1: flat from there. That's your finger of land, and then
- 33:19Speaker 1: the river butts up to your hand on either side
- 33:22Speaker 1: of the thumb. But that thumb has got timber on it,
- 33:25Speaker 1: so it's almost like this land locked piece of land
- 33:28Speaker 1: that had a bunch of woods in it. The only
- 33:31Speaker 1: way you could get to it was either floated or
- 33:33Speaker 1: there's a little tiny kind of side hill trail you
- 33:36Speaker 1: could walk along the edge of the cliffs sort of
- 33:38Speaker 1: to get into that. UM. So I don't think a
- 33:40Speaker 1: lot of people were heading in there if I don't
- 33:43Speaker 1: know if any of the stuff gets touched very much
- 33:45Speaker 1: because it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere.
- 33:47Speaker 1: But um, this section looked particularly protected, UM, and so
- 33:51Speaker 1: we hiked all the way to that, and that ended
- 33:54Speaker 1: up being really good, like awesome looking signed tons and
- 33:57Speaker 1: tons and tons of deer signed um and real quick here,
- 34:01Speaker 1: I think this will be a good place for us
- 34:03Speaker 1: take a break for our Sickest story of the day.
- 34:06Speaker 1: For this week's sit story, we're joined by Montana wild
- 34:09Speaker 1: Zach Boughton, who tells us about a memorable high country
- 34:12Speaker 1: mule deer hunt where he tagged out in the last
- 34:15Speaker 1: week of the season. One of my favorite hunting moments
- 34:19Speaker 1: was a couple of falls ago, last week a season.
- 34:22Speaker 1: We were trying to find big, mature mule deer buck
- 34:25Speaker 1: and we went back to a spot, but I just
- 34:29Speaker 1: kind of had a gut feeling was going to produce.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Had never seen a big buck in the area, and
- 34:35Speaker 1: got there early temperatures were dipping down just below zero,
- 34:39Speaker 1: and we just slowly started climbing the mountain, trying to
- 34:44Speaker 1: hike slow so you don't get too sweaty. Definitely glad
- 34:47Speaker 1: we had the right layers for that day and got
- 34:51Speaker 1: up on the mountain and and made a decision to
- 34:53Speaker 1: keep going. I had thought about going back down the mountain.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I hadn't seen a lot of game. And next thing
- 35:00Speaker 1: you know, we come through the timber look up on
- 35:03Speaker 1: the hillside and here is just a big four point
- 35:07Speaker 1: meal deer buck, exactly what I was looking for. Got down,
- 35:10Speaker 1: the buck, had no clue I was there, put it
- 35:13Speaker 1: behind his shoulder and squeeze the trigger and that was
- 35:16Speaker 1: the end of it. And walking up on that buck
- 35:20Speaker 1: was probably four or five years worth of time spent
- 35:23Speaker 1: in the mountains to try to find that buck, and
- 35:25Speaker 1: it was super reward and that's probably one of my
- 35:29Speaker 1: favorite moments from the last couple of years. Super demanding
- 35:32Speaker 1: hunt and spent a lot of time on the mountain
- 35:34Speaker 1: looking for a buck of a certain size and maturity
- 35:38Speaker 1: that we honestly had never laid eyes on before I
- 35:40Speaker 1: filled my tag on Zack's hunt. He was wearing because
- 35:44Speaker 1: timberline pants and traverse hoodie. If you'd like to create
- 35:48Speaker 1: a sick of story of your own, or to learn
- 35:50Speaker 1: more about sit because technical hunting apparel, visit sick of
- 35:53Speaker 1: gear dot com. And right away, I think, really quickly
- 35:58Speaker 1: we found a shed. Um, I guess that was mine?
- 36:01Speaker 1: Josh right, I found that first shot. Uh yeah, if
- 36:06Speaker 1: you want to call it yours? Oh oh yeah, dog
- 36:11Speaker 1: find a lot? Did they know? No, he's saying that
- 36:15Speaker 1: I poached his shed. I think, o, Dan, you wouldn't
- 36:19Speaker 1: believe it. It was a bad one man. It's literally
- 36:21Speaker 1: directly in front of me. I've got video evidence. I
- 36:24Speaker 1: mean it was it was. We need to start further
- 36:29Speaker 1: me and you, we need to start a club where
- 36:33Speaker 1: because we get walked in front of a lot. It
- 36:34Speaker 1: sounds yeah, no, no one, no one should be ashamed.
- 36:39Speaker 1: You know, Mark is just like you know what I need.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I need it for my content. Yeah yeah, No, Josh,
- 36:47Speaker 1: Josh is the only one who should be ashamed because
- 36:49Speaker 1: he he should have spotted it far before I did.
- 36:53Speaker 1: So that's on you, Josh. Now let's let's take a
- 36:56Speaker 1: step back, because if you know no one's ont of you,
- 37:00Speaker 1: why do you have to look out way far? Yeah,
- 37:02Speaker 1: you know he's over on his side. I'm on mindset.
- 37:05Speaker 1: I'm just scanning, doing a thorough check, and he's out
- 37:07Speaker 1: there just yeah, yeah, yeah. We're walking like forty yards
- 37:14Speaker 1: apart scanning. You know, you can't help but see some
- 37:17Speaker 1: of the stuff. And it was kind of in between us.
- 37:20Speaker 1: But say whatever you will, Josh. Um, but but the long,
- 37:26Speaker 1: the long story of it. Um, we picked up that
- 37:29Speaker 1: shed and what was cool, and the same with the
- 37:31Speaker 1: sheds that Josh found first, and then we found two
- 37:33Speaker 1: other small ones that day. Um, all of these antlers,
- 37:37Speaker 1: you know, we got to let boone pick up. So
- 37:41Speaker 1: you know, in all of my shed hunting here in Michigan,
- 37:43Speaker 1: over the course of the last four years or whatever,
- 37:45Speaker 1: I found like two sheds in four years that Booner
- 37:49Speaker 1: had a chance to smell and pick up before I
- 37:52Speaker 1: touched it in one day. We found five or six
- 37:55Speaker 1: that he got to. So just really good experience for
- 38:00Speaker 1: to get to see it in the real setting, to
- 38:02Speaker 1: pick it up, to smell it, to you know, really
- 38:06Speaker 1: get his idea, get an idea of what these sheds
- 38:08Speaker 1: are without marks, without his dad's sent on it, you know. Um.
- 38:12Speaker 1: So that was really cool. And he had to kick
- 38:14Speaker 1: out of it. You know, he didn't find any antlers,
- 38:16Speaker 1: just like he didn't he never ran up to me
- 38:18Speaker 1: with an antler I didn't see and like surprise me
- 38:21Speaker 1: with the one. Um. You know, we would use one
- 38:23Speaker 1: of us with Spotta and then we would walk over
- 38:25Speaker 1: there and wait for him to grab it. Um. But
- 38:28Speaker 1: you know, for the most part, I think at the end,
- 38:30Speaker 1: I think one of them he didn't really want to
- 38:31Speaker 1: pick up. But for the most part, he got excited
- 38:33Speaker 1: about him, grabbed him, ran around with him, and brought
- 38:35Speaker 1: him back to us. UM. So that was fun to see,
- 38:37Speaker 1: wasn't Josh. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Ye. So,
- 38:41Speaker 1: so I'm looking at a map right now and I
- 38:44Speaker 1: you know, there's there's these creek systems and these river
- 38:46Speaker 1: bottoms and then they kind of these what you call um,
- 38:53Speaker 1: I guess a a bushy draw, a real thick draw
- 38:56Speaker 1: that comes out and all that drink. It's basically a
- 38:59Speaker 1: big rainage area, right that leads down into these into
- 39:03Speaker 1: these rivers. Were you finding the sheds more on the
- 39:06Speaker 1: flat river bottom ground or up into these drainage areas.
- 39:11Speaker 1: So most of the stuff that we're focusing on, um, now,
- 39:15Speaker 1: most of the stuff that we were seeing, as far
- 39:17Speaker 1: as that, it was all on the flat river bottom stuff. Um.
- 39:20Speaker 1: It seemed like as soon as you started gaining elevation.
- 39:22Speaker 1: I don't know that I doubt this is a rule.
- 39:24Speaker 1: I'm sure there's places where the white tails do head
- 39:26Speaker 1: up a little bit into the draws and stuff. But
- 39:28Speaker 1: as far as what we were seeing, it was really
- 39:30Speaker 1: in the flat river bottom stuff that was just packed
- 39:34Speaker 1: with deer sign As soon as you start going up,
- 39:36Speaker 1: that's when you start seeing what you know, that's where
- 39:38Speaker 1: we would see mule deer. That's where I found. I
- 39:40Speaker 1: found a mule deer shed that was up in one
- 39:42Speaker 1: of those little pieces. Um. Everything else as far as
- 39:46Speaker 1: the white tails was down in that brush on the
- 39:49Speaker 1: on the flat stuff. UM. But I'm sure there are
- 39:52Speaker 1: some places where you could go farther up into those
- 39:54Speaker 1: little draws a little bit higher up and getting the stuff.
- 39:56Speaker 1: But I just don't think in most cases the white
- 39:59Speaker 1: tails like the really rugged stuff, they prefer the easier
- 40:02Speaker 1: walking versus like these mule deer's mule deer that will
- 40:05Speaker 1: head right up these near vertical walls and go over
- 40:07Speaker 1: all this nasty stuff. Um, I think that's at least
- 40:11Speaker 1: what they prefer most of the time. But yeah, man,
- 40:15Speaker 1: it was a good day in there. That was our
- 40:16Speaker 1: first day. We're really really excited about what we were seeing.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Not only did we find those sheds, but some spots
- 40:21Speaker 1: that I think would be worth hunting for sure. Um.
- 40:24Speaker 1: And we did find do we find two dead bucks
- 40:26Speaker 1: in their josh? I think one on the one where
- 40:31Speaker 1: that day. Yeah, so found like a nice like a
- 40:35Speaker 1: nice two year old seven pointer that was dead in there. Um,
- 40:38Speaker 1: plus all the sheds we found, plus just lots of
- 40:40Speaker 1: good sign tough to get to. So that's the spot
- 40:43Speaker 1: I think I'd like to try to get back to
- 40:45Speaker 1: and hunt someday. Um. And then yeah, headed back home
- 40:49Speaker 1: that night. We had some then in some brats I think,
- 40:52Speaker 1: or maybe that's another night, But we get good at
- 40:54Speaker 1: the campsite. Um. And then the next day, were you
- 40:58Speaker 1: guys tent camping? Yeah, okay, yep, tent camp What do
- 41:02Speaker 1: you think about this is the first time you've ever
- 41:03Speaker 1: done like winter tent camping, Josh, what do you think? Yeah,
- 41:09Speaker 1: it wasn't It wasn't that bad. Um, it could have
- 41:11Speaker 1: been a lot worse. I think we actually got really
- 41:14Speaker 1: lucky with their weather that week. Um. You know, it
- 41:16Speaker 1: was never terribly cold. Um. And we both got good
- 41:21Speaker 1: enough gear that kept a swarm all night. But it was, Um,
- 41:25Speaker 1: I enjoyed it is what do you call it? Type
- 41:27Speaker 1: too fun? Is that what you call it? Type two? Yeah?
- 41:30Speaker 1: If it's not fun, it's type type too fun. I
- 41:33Speaker 1: don't even know if I go that far. Josh, it
- 41:35Speaker 1: wasn't that bad. It was. It was pretty uncomfortable. I
- 41:39Speaker 1: mean it was cool at night, but like you said,
- 41:41Speaker 1: as long as you had a good jacket and hat
- 41:42Speaker 1: and stuff like that. I mean I think at night
- 41:45Speaker 1: it probably got down to the twenties um, and then
- 41:47Speaker 1: the day it was thirties and forties. Um. But my
- 41:51Speaker 1: wife was not interested in doing that kind of camping. Um.
- 41:57Speaker 1: But yeah, the camp site we're in we camped back
- 41:59Speaker 1: at the National Park. Um. For the first few days
- 42:02Speaker 1: and that was just a beautiful, beautiful spot. Um. So yeah,
- 42:06Speaker 1: great camping. And then when we were up on the
- 42:08Speaker 1: other stuff, good deer scouting everything. And then our final
- 42:11Speaker 1: day in North Dakota went to a different section. We
- 42:15Speaker 1: had to do a ton of hiking just to get
- 42:17Speaker 1: to the spot because again we were having issues of
- 42:19Speaker 1: the roads, so we didn't want to risk going down
- 42:21Speaker 1: on the muddy roads. But we still wanted to get
- 42:23Speaker 1: to the spot, so we had to do a two
- 42:24Speaker 1: mile walk down the road just to get to the
- 42:28Speaker 1: spot we wanted to start scouting. Um. And then once
- 42:31Speaker 1: we got in there, I think we walked another eight
- 42:33Speaker 1: miles in there. Did we Did we do it twelve
- 42:35Speaker 1: miles that day? Josh, Yeah, I think that's the twelve
- 42:38Speaker 1: mile day. Yep. Yeah. Um, so we put some good
- 42:41Speaker 1: miles in the boots there. But that was a good
- 42:42Speaker 1: day too. We walked, It took us a while to
- 42:44Speaker 1: get going, didn't find anything for a bit, but then
- 42:47Speaker 1: I think that first shed you found was that huge
- 42:49Speaker 1: G two shed, right, Yeah, you have that that big
- 42:52Speaker 1: G two shed under the um under that cedar tree. Yeah,
- 42:56Speaker 1: And um, I think basically all the sheds we found
- 42:59Speaker 1: on that day. We're if I'm I think all of
- 43:05Speaker 1: them were around cedars. They were in cedar betting, isn't
- 43:07Speaker 1: that right? Ah? Yeah, I think so. Um yeah, because
- 43:12Speaker 1: then I found that old, that old, chewed up one,
- 43:14Speaker 1: which would have been a slammer, um, that was in
- 43:18Speaker 1: some cedar betting. Um, just a little bit further down
- 43:21Speaker 1: from this first one that I found. And then yeah,
- 43:24Speaker 1: I think all of them are kind of in that
- 43:25Speaker 1: same type of cover that day. And then found another
- 43:29Speaker 1: couple of dead bucks or one dead buck on that section. Um,
- 43:32Speaker 1: I found that tiny mule deer shed up on the
- 43:34Speaker 1: side hill. Um. And then the well, one of the
- 43:39Speaker 1: things I was thinking about in general this whole time
- 43:41Speaker 1: we were in North Dakota, and I happened to record
- 43:43Speaker 1: a clip talking about this. I think it gave me
- 43:46Speaker 1: some good luck because I was just talking about being
- 43:48Speaker 1: out here in western North Dakota, in this same general
- 43:51Speaker 1: region where Theodore Roosevelt spent so much time. Um. In
- 43:55Speaker 1: one of his book about him, I was reading, they
- 43:58Speaker 1: were talking about one of his ranch houses, and they're
- 44:01Speaker 1: saying that when he walked into his ranch house, there
- 44:03Speaker 1: were so many white tail and mule deer shed antlers
- 44:06Speaker 1: that you could mistake it for an antler museum. Um.
- 44:09Speaker 1: So I was like, man, that's awesome. Like Theodore Roosevelt
- 44:11Speaker 1: was picking up sheds just like me. And I wondered, like,
- 44:14Speaker 1: maybe where I'm walking right now, maybe Theodore Roosevelt walked
- 44:19Speaker 1: to pick up shed antlers too. Um that was like
- 44:23Speaker 1: a cool thing to think about. So I record a
- 44:25Speaker 1: little video clip talking about that. And then I was like,
- 44:27Speaker 1: and you know, maybe maybe I'm gonna get maybe I
- 44:29Speaker 1: can get a little bit of Theodore Roosevelt shed hunting luck.
- 44:32Speaker 1: I could use that Right about now, and not like
- 44:34Speaker 1: a half hour later, we're just about done with the day.
- 44:36Speaker 1: We're heading past this section of thick theaters that are
- 44:39Speaker 1: right in the edge of the butts, and I'm walking
- 44:41Speaker 1: on the edge and I'm peering in underneath the branches
- 44:45Speaker 1: to my right, and I spot a main beam. So
- 44:48Speaker 1: I'm like, awesome, gotta shed. I called Josh over. I
- 44:51Speaker 1: go sneaking into this thick stuff to go pick up
- 44:53Speaker 1: the shed, and I come into I get underneath the
- 44:56Speaker 1: tree limbs and it kind of opens up a little
- 44:57Speaker 1: bit and then I see it's not just one shed
- 44:59Speaker 1: a there it's too shed antlers in the big really
- 45:02Speaker 1: big five point sides. So I freak out, me and
- 45:05Speaker 1: Josh like high five in and stuff. Um, the best
- 45:09Speaker 1: match that I've ever found. Um. And you couldn't ask
- 45:12Speaker 1: like a prettier little picture right in there, could you, Josh?
- 45:15Speaker 1: I mean? Sweet? Yeah, it's perfect right where we were
- 45:18Speaker 1: in there, it's like where you think a deer with
- 45:20Speaker 1: bed like that was like a nice big buck with bed.
- 45:23Speaker 1: That's where it would be. Yeah, perfect little spot right
- 45:25Speaker 1: up the next to the trunk of the cedar tree.
- 45:27Speaker 1: The antlers are lying kind of almost on top of
- 45:30Speaker 1: each other. They're like chocolate browns, beautiful colors, and so
- 45:33Speaker 1: I grabbed the antlers. I pull them up out of
- 45:35Speaker 1: the pine needles, and I'm looking at them, and then
- 45:37Speaker 1: all of a sudden I realized there's like a four
- 45:40Speaker 1: inch or five inch drop time off one of them,
- 45:43Speaker 1: and I just really freaked out. Then it was so cool.
- 45:48Speaker 1: It was the coolest antler I've ever picked up. Um,
- 45:52Speaker 1: And that was that was a highlight of the trip
- 45:54Speaker 1: for sure, don't you think, Josh, Oh, yeah, for sure
- 45:57Speaker 1: that your face was priceless when you saw it. It's
- 46:00Speaker 1: pretty funny. Yeah, I'm holding the handler right now, and
- 46:03Speaker 1: it's super cool, really long main beams that kind of
- 46:07Speaker 1: sweep up. Um. The drop time is almost if you
- 46:12Speaker 1: were looking at where the brow time is and then
- 46:13Speaker 1: then took a brow time and then just put another
- 46:16Speaker 1: brow time directly underneath it. That's kind of what this
- 46:18Speaker 1: antler looks like. UM. So that's my first drop time
- 46:22Speaker 1: shed I've ever found him, probably the only drop time
- 46:24Speaker 1: Sheddle ever find. Um. So yeah, man, that was the
- 46:28Speaker 1: way we kept off our North Dakota day three. UM.
- 46:31Speaker 1: And then that spot looked really great from a hunting
- 46:33Speaker 1: perspective to UM. You know, my my big goal from
- 46:36Speaker 1: the scouting standpoint was just to find these little pockets
- 46:39Speaker 1: that had a lot of white tails and that looked
- 46:40Speaker 1: like you know, are they hard to get to do that?
- 46:43Speaker 1: A lot of white tails is a good sign. And
- 46:45Speaker 1: I found those two spots. I definitely think hit that criteria. UM.
- 46:50Speaker 1: And on that note, you know, one of the things
- 46:52Speaker 1: I want to make sure we talked about in this
- 46:54Speaker 1: is that when it comes to trying to do like
- 46:56Speaker 1: a Western white tail hunt, the big thing I've been
- 46:59Speaker 1: focusing on is just finding that finding if you're hunting
- 47:03Speaker 1: public land or private land, whatever it is, find that
- 47:06Speaker 1: kind of ground along a river corridor where there's some
- 47:09Speaker 1: good thick cover, because again that's the limited quand that's
- 47:13Speaker 1: the limited thing in most of these places. So if
- 47:15Speaker 1: you find that good cover along the river, you almost
- 47:17Speaker 1: certainly are gonna have some white tails in these places.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Um So for me, it's just finding those places on
- 47:22Speaker 1: the map and then going there in person and just saying, Okay, yeah,
- 47:24Speaker 1: it does this look like has a sign that I
- 47:26Speaker 1: think it has? Um And so we were able to
- 47:28Speaker 1: do that. Um So I've got two really nice looking
- 47:31Speaker 1: sections that I want to get back to someday. And
- 47:33Speaker 1: I don't know, Josh, where are you at. You were
- 47:34Speaker 1: talking like maybe you want to try to come back
- 47:36Speaker 1: and hunt. Maybe not. Have you been thinking about anymore? Yeah,
- 47:39Speaker 1: I've been thinking about it. I mean, it's definitely something
- 47:41Speaker 1: I want to do. Um. You know, North Dakota especially,
- 47:45Speaker 1: it is on my short list of states i'd like
- 47:46Speaker 1: to get to. UM. I don't know if I'm gonna
- 47:48Speaker 1: be able to make it happen this year, but within
- 47:50Speaker 1: the next five years i'd like to. I'd like to
- 47:52Speaker 1: get out there. Um or Montana or South Dakot somewhere
- 47:56Speaker 1: out west next a white tail hunt for next five years.
- 48:00Speaker 1: That's the most unambitious goal I've ever heard that can happened. Buddy,
- 48:06Speaker 1: do it now, Do it now, trust me, do it now.
- 48:11Speaker 1: You don't have kids yet. I know I don't kids. Yeah,
- 48:14Speaker 1: maybe I should do it now. Yeah, maybe I'll tell
- 48:18Speaker 1: you what your kids then try to do it. Dance
- 48:21Speaker 1: danciting on the other side of the internet right now,
- 48:23Speaker 1: just dying to have that opportunity to get out there now.
- 48:27Speaker 1: I need to make it happen sooner than later. You right,
- 48:30Speaker 1: it was. I mean, it's just a really really pretty air.
- 48:33Speaker 1: And I've just come to love this Western white tail
- 48:36Speaker 1: thing in general because you get into these really unique habitats,
- 48:41Speaker 1: very few people, lots of deer. The quality of deer
- 48:44Speaker 1: is is pretty darned good, especially compared to what I
- 48:47Speaker 1: have like to hunt here in Michigan. Now compared to Iowa.
- 48:49Speaker 1: It's not like Iowa as far as you're not going
- 48:51Speaker 1: to see as many monstrous deer um, but you can
- 48:54Speaker 1: see a lot of like nice dear um. And for me,
- 48:58Speaker 1: that kind of experiences is great. That's all I really
- 49:00Speaker 1: want is to have like a cool wild experience and
- 49:02Speaker 1: see a lot of dear and shoot him at sure buck.
- 49:04Speaker 1: That's that's awesome. So that kind of thing is very
- 49:07Speaker 1: achievable in states like Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska,
- 49:13Speaker 1: Eastern Wyoming. UM. So I'm I'm pretty much on the
- 49:17Speaker 1: point where I think every year, I'm gonna be doing
- 49:18Speaker 1: at least one trip, if not two trips a year
- 49:20Speaker 1: doing that kind of hunt because it I'm I'm really
- 49:22Speaker 1: getting hooked on it. Um anything, Yeah, you gotta, I gotta.
- 49:28Speaker 1: I got a question about, you know, shed hunting. You're
- 49:32Speaker 1: you know for me when I go shed hunting, and
- 49:34Speaker 1: maybe it's because I already know the properties that I'm
- 49:36Speaker 1: shed hunting. But on a trip like this where you
- 49:39Speaker 1: guys weren't necessarily just looking for sheds, you were also
- 49:43Speaker 1: looking for um hunting spots as well. So how did you,
- 49:48Speaker 1: I guess split up your time. I guess focused on sheds,
- 49:52Speaker 1: but at the same time looking like, Okay, I'm gonna
- 49:55Speaker 1: mark this on a on a map where I'm gonna
- 49:57Speaker 1: put you know, this particular uh, this particular location for
- 50:01Speaker 1: a mental note so I can come back to it
- 50:03Speaker 1: and you know, as a potential hunting spot in the fall. Yeah.
- 50:07Speaker 1: So for at least for me, I wasn't trying to
- 50:11Speaker 1: go um. I wasn't focusing on scouting to the level
- 50:15Speaker 1: of detail where I was trying to pick like specific
- 50:17Speaker 1: stand locations or anything like that. It was really the
- 50:20Speaker 1: scouting goals I had were just to determine and does
- 50:24Speaker 1: this chunk look good? Like is it worth coming back
- 50:26Speaker 1: and hunting here? Um? So really, once I got to
- 50:29Speaker 1: these places, I was focused on shed hunting in that area.
- 50:33Speaker 1: And then you know, every once and I would stop
- 50:34Speaker 1: when we took breaks and stuff, and I'd be looking
- 50:36Speaker 1: around and looking at the map and thinking through things,
- 50:38Speaker 1: and you know, you kind of develop an aggregate idea
- 50:41Speaker 1: of how much deer sign you're seeing, how many rubs
- 50:43Speaker 1: are you seeing, how many big scrapes stuff like that,
- 50:46Speaker 1: How what are the shed quality, what are the dead
- 50:48Speaker 1: deer we're seeing? All those things kind of would just
- 50:51Speaker 1: lead up to me knowing like, yes, this looks like
- 50:53Speaker 1: a spot I'd like to come back to, or no
- 50:54Speaker 1: it's not. Um. But I wasn't you know, scouring the
- 51:00Speaker 1: area looking for rubs or looking for specific stand sites,
- 51:03Speaker 1: are looking for access points or anything that um, most
- 51:07Speaker 1: of my focus was devoted to looking for antlers. Um,
- 51:11Speaker 1: I would what do you think, Josh, is that kind
- 51:12Speaker 1: of where your head? Was that too? Yeah? I was
- 51:14Speaker 1: the same way. I mean, yeah, you had to be
- 51:17Speaker 1: blind though, not to see you know, good deer sign
- 51:20Speaker 1: in the area. I mean, there's so many I can't
- 51:22Speaker 1: I can't remember how many times I said to you, dude,
- 51:24Speaker 1: I've never seen so many rubs in my life. Um,
- 51:28Speaker 1: so he had to be blind not to see the
- 51:30Speaker 1: deer sign in there and have a pretty good idea
- 51:32Speaker 1: of of how they are using it. And um, you know,
- 51:35Speaker 1: Mark and I were talking about if we, you know,
- 51:37Speaker 1: if we come back out here, take a take an
- 51:39Speaker 1: evening or a morning off and just kind of sit
- 51:41Speaker 1: up on one of these ridge tops and kind of
- 51:43Speaker 1: glass these areas and see how they're using the area
- 51:46Speaker 1: and kind of make a plan of attack from there.
- 51:49Speaker 1: But yeah, I was. I was definitely more focused on
- 51:51Speaker 1: looking for for sheds and specific trees to hunt. On
- 51:55Speaker 1: hunting or or whatever the case. Maybe that's what's so
- 51:58Speaker 1: cool too about hunting a place like this. And I'm
- 52:01Speaker 1: just a sucker for like being able to see long
- 52:03Speaker 1: distances and everything. But in a lot of these areas
- 52:06Speaker 1: out west. Just the view shed that you have, the
- 52:10Speaker 1: distance that you can see is so much more substantial
- 52:13Speaker 1: than what you've got here in like an area of
- 52:15Speaker 1: Michigan where usually it's super thick UM or if anything,
- 52:19Speaker 1: if if there's a view it's because you're sitting over
- 52:20Speaker 1: cropfield or something. But otherwise you can't see a whole
- 52:23Speaker 1: lot and there's lots of trees and stuff um out here.
- 52:26Speaker 1: You know. The way I've approached my western whitetail hunts
- 52:28Speaker 1: so far, and the way I intend to continue, is
- 52:31Speaker 1: that the first day or two UM, you're just getting
- 52:34Speaker 1: to a high point or getting to some kind of
- 52:36Speaker 1: observation point. Maybe it's an observation stand, maybe it's sitting
- 52:39Speaker 1: up on a hill or a ridge. Maybe it's just
- 52:41Speaker 1: sitting out on the road and using a spotting scope. UM.
- 52:44Speaker 1: But just observe UM. And if you're hunting, you know
- 52:48Speaker 1: in the early season or even you know in the
- 52:50Speaker 1: middle of October, when they're still on like a bed
- 52:52Speaker 1: defeed pattern of some type, UM, you can very easily
- 52:56Speaker 1: determine where these dear bedded and where they're heading to
- 52:59Speaker 1: feed UM. And then you just plan you observe, and
- 53:02Speaker 1: then you act on it and you go and intercept. Um.
- 53:05Speaker 1: It's not like you have to find a whole bunch
- 53:09Speaker 1: of specific train features on your map and then scout
- 53:12Speaker 1: and see if there's yes, there's trails there, and then yeah,
- 53:15Speaker 1: maybe it's worth hanging to stand in this thicket like
- 53:17Speaker 1: maybe we have to do here at home. You can
- 53:19Speaker 1: just see it. And if you see it, you see
- 53:22Speaker 1: a buck, your interest in hunting. You see a bunch
- 53:24Speaker 1: of bucks move through this everything, you say, Okay, yeah,
- 53:26Speaker 1: I know that tree right there that I watched. I'm
- 53:28Speaker 1: gonna go hanging standing there tomorrow afternoon and hunt it
- 53:31Speaker 1: and then you can adjust from there. Um. And I
- 53:33Speaker 1: think this spot would be perfect for that. You get
- 53:35Speaker 1: up on one of these buttes, watch over this area,
- 53:37Speaker 1: you could see almost everything, um, and then sneak in
- 53:41Speaker 1: there the next day and and hunt them. It's just cool.
- 53:44Speaker 1: You get to see so much. I love just what
- 53:46Speaker 1: we were talking about, Josh I as much as I love,
- 53:49Speaker 1: you know, actually having a hunt that comes together and
- 53:51Speaker 1: connecting on a deer. I'm happy nine the time if
- 53:55Speaker 1: I can just observe a lot of deer. So these
- 53:56Speaker 1: hunts are fun, just because you can see a lot
- 53:58Speaker 1: of action. I mean, I just love watching them. Um.
- 54:01Speaker 1: So these kinds of spots are great for that, which
- 54:05Speaker 1: is uh, which is why I'll definitely be out there
- 54:07Speaker 1: again soon. And you know, one thing we did talk
- 54:10Speaker 1: about mark and scouting for you know, hunting season is
- 54:14Speaker 1: UM we talked about maybe doing it like a almost
- 54:18Speaker 1: something like we didn't done our elk trips where hike
- 54:20Speaker 1: your camp back in there and camp um somewhat close
- 54:25Speaker 1: to these areas, UM, just because it's such a far
- 54:28Speaker 1: walk from any sort of area to park or anything
- 54:33Speaker 1: like that, it could be a real issue, um getting
- 54:36Speaker 1: deer out or whatever. So we talked about maybe camping
- 54:38Speaker 1: back in there or something and helping um shorten our
- 54:42Speaker 1: walk a little bit or whatever the case may be
- 54:44Speaker 1: in in terms of our access right right, Yeah, find
- 54:47Speaker 1: some of those locations that are really tough to get
- 54:49Speaker 1: to where you'd have like a couple of mile walk
- 54:51Speaker 1: just to get to it. Um, you can, like you said,
- 54:54Speaker 1: almost put a spike camp back in there because there's
- 54:57Speaker 1: so much public land in there and you could just
- 55:00Speaker 1: have like it's almost like a I mean some of
- 55:03Speaker 1: these sections people do backpack in and mule deer hunt
- 55:06Speaker 1: up in the badland stuff around there. Um, so you
- 55:08Speaker 1: can almost set up a camp like that, but then
- 55:10Speaker 1: just drop down the hill into the white tail stuff.
- 55:13Speaker 1: That would be That would be a really cool way
- 55:15Speaker 1: to do it. So yeah, it was awesome North Dakota,
- 55:19Speaker 1: absolutely beautiful. What do we have? We found eleven or
- 55:22Speaker 1: twelve sheds while we were there. Yeah, I think we're
- 55:24Speaker 1: at eleven or twelve. I think eleven if I remember right. Yeah,
- 55:28Speaker 1: twist like a lot of nice, really nice quality antlers,
- 55:32Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, and the two match sets are to
- 55:35Speaker 1: both of our biggest match sets. Yep. So sweet. And then, um,
- 55:40Speaker 1: you know, we kinda had used up all the places
- 55:43Speaker 1: I had found on the map that I thought were
- 55:46Speaker 1: worth checking out in this general region. Um, and then
- 55:48Speaker 1: we're having no issues. Like I said earlier, a lot
- 55:51Speaker 1: of spots we still want to go see we couldn't
- 55:53Speaker 1: get down because they're all mudded out. So I decided
- 55:56Speaker 1: to head back towards where a deer hunted last year
- 55:58Speaker 1: in Montana and east in Montana. Um, and so that's
- 56:02Speaker 1: what we did. On day four. We drove to eastern Montana,
- 56:06Speaker 1: set up camp where I was at last year and
- 56:09Speaker 1: then UM decided to shed hunt and scout some of
- 56:12Speaker 1: the public land there and then also try to get
- 56:15Speaker 1: permission from some of the landowners I met out there
- 56:17Speaker 1: to walk some of their stuff. So this was a
- 56:20Speaker 1: situation where my previous year's experience helped out a ton,
- 56:24Speaker 1: because last year, while I was hunting in this area, UM,
- 56:28Speaker 1: when I was camped out was like setting up camp.
- 56:30Speaker 1: One day, a neighboring landowner came over and talked to
- 56:33Speaker 1: me and wanted to, you know, make sure I wasn't
- 56:35Speaker 1: an idiot who was gonna screw up stuff on his
- 56:38Speaker 1: neighboring property and stuff like that, and wanted to just
- 56:40Speaker 1: get to know me and what I was doing. He
- 56:42Speaker 1: ended up being a really nice guy, ended up showing
- 56:44Speaker 1: me around some of his stuff and blah blah blah,
- 56:47Speaker 1: And then he talked to another neighbor, and that neighbor
- 56:49Speaker 1: came drove down to my campsite the next day and
- 56:51Speaker 1: he came to talk to me, And so I met
- 56:53Speaker 1: these two really nice people last fall. Well this spring,
- 56:57Speaker 1: now i'm back. I went and talked to both of
- 56:59Speaker 1: them again and said, hey, you know, me and my
- 57:01Speaker 1: buddy further, we're down here looking for some she alers. Yeah,
- 57:06Speaker 1: they thought it was a weird named um and and
- 57:12Speaker 1: they both ended up really lending us a hand. UM.
- 57:15Speaker 1: One of them gave us permission to walk his property UM,
- 57:19Speaker 1: which was a really big chunk that also gave us
- 57:21Speaker 1: access to additional public land to UM. And then the
- 57:25Speaker 1: other guy was was offered a less walk a little
- 57:29Speaker 1: bit of his and then also gave us access to
- 57:31Speaker 1: his canoe to cross a river to get to more stuff. UM.
- 57:35Speaker 1: So I mean the long story short in the Montana
- 57:39Speaker 1: with three days there in Montana. UM, the first day
- 57:43Speaker 1: I found a match set on public land, which is
- 57:45Speaker 1: pretty sweet. And that was one where I saw one
- 57:48Speaker 1: side and I'm like, boom, go get it. And then
- 57:51Speaker 1: he goes off and running the other direction. I'm like,
- 57:53Speaker 1: what the heck is he doing? And then I look
- 57:55Speaker 1: at word what he's doing and his head is in
- 57:57Speaker 1: the other antler. He's sniffing the other antler the other side. UM.
- 58:01Speaker 1: So that was cool. And then we started walking some
- 58:04Speaker 1: of the private that we got permission on and UM,
- 58:08Speaker 1: I don't know how would you describe this stuff. It
- 58:10Speaker 1: was a little different than where we were at North Dakota.
- 58:12Speaker 1: It was still river bottom stuff, Um, but a lot thicker,
- 58:15Speaker 1: don't you think, super thick? Yeah, those of the Russian
- 58:18Speaker 1: olive and man that stuff. I mean you were we
- 58:21Speaker 1: were calling around our hands and knees down there. Um,
- 58:24Speaker 1: that was pretty brutal. Yeah, it was. I don't even
- 58:27Speaker 1: know how to describe it. Like imagine like the thickest,
- 58:29Speaker 1: nastiest like thorn bushes that you might have to walk
- 58:31Speaker 1: through in Iowa, Dan and then just imagine like stretches
- 58:35Speaker 1: of like forty acres of that or whatever, just NonStop.
- 58:38Speaker 1: But it all looked like underneath it, like there was
- 58:40Speaker 1: kind of tunnels burrowed through it where all the deer
- 58:42Speaker 1: were moving through, and there was just like deer crap everywhere,
- 58:46Speaker 1: rubs on almost every tree. I mean, it was so
- 58:49Speaker 1: tempting to get in there because you're like, there's gotta
- 58:51Speaker 1: be sheds in here. Um, So we we pushed through it.
- 58:56Speaker 1: We spent more time dodging tree branches and saving your face,
- 59:01Speaker 1: and then you probably did actually looking for antlers down
- 59:03Speaker 1: in there. That was that was the issue. We probably
- 59:06Speaker 1: walked by a bunch of them. Yeah. What was nice
- 59:08Speaker 1: about this area in Montana, though, is that in North
- 59:11Speaker 1: Dakota there wasn't any like food source. There wasn't any
- 59:14Speaker 1: kind of air culture, um, particularly close to the places
- 59:17Speaker 1: that we were walking about. UM. Here on these properties,
- 59:22Speaker 1: we were either able to walk a food source or
- 59:25Speaker 1: we are close to food sources. So the number of
- 59:28Speaker 1: deer in there was like even more, even higher than
- 59:31Speaker 1: what we had in Northcota. I mean like really really
- 59:32Speaker 1: high deer numbers and lots and lots of bucks. I
- 59:35Speaker 1: mean I saw lots of bucks last year when I
- 59:37Speaker 1: hunted there, but this trip made me realize it's even
- 59:39Speaker 1: better than I realized. Um. That first day, I found
- 59:43Speaker 1: eight sheds um. And that was only like a half
- 59:46Speaker 1: day because the first half of the day was like
- 59:47Speaker 1: getting set up, getting there, set up camp. So it
- 59:50Speaker 1: really was a half day. And I had my best
- 59:52Speaker 1: day of shed hunting ever that day, UM with eight pickups.
- 59:56Speaker 1: And then Josh, you found one. Yep? Was that stefing you?
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Uh No, no I was. I was a very um,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: courteous shed hunter. I didn't cross your lines at all,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: just fun to make sure you didn't get too down
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: on yourself. So I let you pick them all up
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: that day. I had to have the content, right, I
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: gotta get the content I'll tell I'll tell you what
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Kurt Josh was that. Um, he is so slow. I mean,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: he just he just takes his sweet time everywhere he goes.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I'm always looking by my shoulder like are you coming, Josh,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: are you coming? Or like we had we're heading into
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: this great looking betting area and we're about to get
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: into it. I'm thinking, oh, there's gonna be a shut
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: up here anywhere. And then Josh like, hey, man, going
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: ahead of me, I gotta use the bathroom. So so
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: he's like rushed around his backpack for toilet paper and stuff,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: and me and Boom go walking ahead and I go
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: pull out like two really nice sheds that maybe he
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: could have picked up if he was walking, but he
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: was And when Josh of those moments, Man had one
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: of those moments. Yeah, yeah, yeah, been a couple of days.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: You know, we're out you're out there and you're eating
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: protein bars and all that kind of stuff. You know,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: just things happen. Things happen. The thing about Further is
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: I've spent I've stayed in many hotel rooms with him
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: and stuff because we do these we do these out
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: of state hunts together a lot. He'll go if we
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: need to go down this, He'll go in the bathroom
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: and you'll hear him like watching YouTube videos and like
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: singing along to music. He's calling his wife. So I imagine,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I imagine we're out there shed hunting, I'm picking up sheds,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: and he's sitting like was back up against a tree trunk,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: like watching YouTube and talking to Kelly and all this stuff.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: And I think that's why you missed out, dude. I
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: don't know. Hey, my motto in life is a slow
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: and steady wins the race. So I was nice and
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: slow and steady. And I think my wife's You and
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: my wife probably both kill me times. You know, you
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: guys both have the same issues with me. I think, yeah, yeah,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: he's Yeah. I won't lament anymore on that. But that
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: was a fun day. Yeah. And then the next day
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: it was the highlight probably of the trip. Yeah, And
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I think that that We started the day, went and
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: scout some different public land. Didn't find much there, beautiful
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: area and we saw a ton of animals, ton of antelope, mule, deer,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: white tails, all sorts of stuff, but just no sheds.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Didn't look at the kind of stuff we want to hunt. Um,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: so one of the landowners then got in touch with said, Hey,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: if you want to cross the river with me on
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: my canoe, you can get access to this other stuff.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Um so then this is where it gets good. Here
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: it gets good. Do you want to do you want
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: to tell this his story Josh? Or how do we
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: How do we tell? I think you'll do. I think
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: you'll do a great job. But telling it so Dan,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: you won't be surprised about this because I've developed a
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: history of doing this kind of stuff. Now, um, I
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: we're gonna cross this river to get to this other
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: section that's based on the maps and what I think.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: I'm like, Oh, this is gonna be amazing. Shed hunting
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: in here, that's gonna be awesome. There's gotta be lots
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: of deer in here. So me and the landowner are
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: gonna go across the river and the canoe first, and
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: then I was gonna come back across on my own
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: and pick up Josh and then go back drop him off,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: and then come back across and pick up the landowner
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: his wife. We're gonna shuttle people across. The river is
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: really high again from runoff, it's really muddy, it's really fast,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: it's pushing through there all the snow melt from the spring. Um.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: But I've canoed a lot over the course of my life,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: he asked me. He's like, you you comfortable, You good
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: with canoes. I'm like, oh, yeah, I'm good with canoes.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: But I got to thinking that forwards. I guess I
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: haven't canoed on a river since like high school. But
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: but me and the landowner go paddling across, and he
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: keeps saying that the keys, you gotta keep the nose
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: of the canoe pointed into the current, so basically you're
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: pointed upstream, and then you just gotta kind of float
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: with the river down, but just keep your nose pointed up.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: So we managed to get across the river just fine.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I drop him off, and he says, okay, go back across,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: grab Josh and do it again. So the canoe is
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: pretty narrow, and I get sat in it and I
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: start to push out, and just as I pushed on
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: into the river, like immediately, the canoe like tips almost
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: all the way over. Holy smokes um. And then I
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: rip myself and I balance out. I'm like, Okay, that's good,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: I got this. I got this under control. He just like,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: just make sure the nose stays pointing down or upstream,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: make sure the water is coming towards you. So yeah,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I got, I got. So I'm like, oh, I'm in
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: good control. I'm balanced. I've got my my legs on
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: either side spread out real wide to spread my way across.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Took a deep breath and pushed off one more time,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: and I'm focused. I know exactly what to do. I'm
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: pointing the nose of the canoe right down stream upstream.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: I take one paddle out and immediately the current takes
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: the nose in that canoe and whips it around like
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: a whole ninety degrees, and just instantly, the canoe flips
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: over completely in the middle of the river capsizes. I
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: go flipping over. I fall completely in the river up
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: to like my chest, and in midfall, I just remember thinking, oh,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: ship and then my cell phone were the two things
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I remember thinking. I managed to though it was shallow
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: enough right there that I was able to get my
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: feet and I grabbed the canoe, and I just remember
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: the next thing thing is like, do not lose this
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: guy's canoe. Like I was so embarrassed already. I can't
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: believe I just did this in front of him and
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: his wife, after just telling him, Oh yeah, I'm good
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: into canoes, and instantly I flip over in this torrent
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Or river and that I'm holding on like dear life
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: for the canoe, trying to make sure I don't lose.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: It's like dragging me down the river. And I think
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: the guy was yelling at me, like, let go the canoe,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: let go the canoe, because I think he was just
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: worried I was going to drown. Um. But in my head,
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm like, I can't lose this guy's canoe.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: So after I don't know how long, it probably was
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: like three seconds, but to me it felt like thirty
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: five seconds or a minute. Like in there, like battling
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: this canoe that was filling up with water and sucking
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: me downstream. I summoned, I summoned my inner hulk strength,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: I think. I think, if I remember right, Josh, didn't
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: I picked the canoe up out of the water and
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: hold it over, didn't I completely I'm pretty sure I
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: put it over my head and was yelling and then
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: walked through the raging room. Oh man, I think the
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: best part of it though, I think the best part
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: of it, Like as soon as you went over, as
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: soon as you went under, the landowner's wife's okay, I
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: think I'm just gonna stay on this side of the river.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Completely lost trust in him. Yeah, She's like, I'm not
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: riding across the room. Yeah. So. So I managed to
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: save the canoe and get out of the river. Um,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: but I was completely drenched and um. Then the landowners like, okay,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: we need to get you back to the house to
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: get you warmed up and dried off and stuff. And
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I was like, oh no, no, I'm fine, and he's like,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: oh no, we gotta get you back. I'm like, oh no,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: I'm finely as long as I walk. Um, as long
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: as I'm walking around, I'll be fine. I'm like, I've
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: done this before in Iowa. Don't worry about it. There
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: was snow on the ground, and there was snow on
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: the ground. Yeah so so yeah. Man, I was soaking
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: wet and it was probably in the thirties. It was cold. Um,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: but I was like, damn it, I already made it
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: across the river. I'm already soaked. I might as well
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: try to find some sheds. And I'm glad we did
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: it because we had about an hour and a half
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: to shed hunt, and then we had to come back
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: and shuttle the land. Excuse me, we had to shuttle
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: the land on her back across the river and then
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: we could continue. So we had like an hour and
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: a half and Josh, you you found the shed of
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: your life. Yeah, I found the shed of my life.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: And it was Yeah, we had hardly been walking to me,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: We're maybe back in there for ten minutes. I got
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: one and uh it is timed down and uh uh
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I walked up to him. At Holy God, I waited
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: for I waited for you to get over there because
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I knew it was a good one, and um, I
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: pick it up. And this thing it's just a it's
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: got serious mass. It's got a split brow and I
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: don't know what this other. I don't know if you
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: want to call it another main beam or a third
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: brow time. Um, it's a giant. I'll probably never find
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: a shed like this in my life. Um, it's awesome. Yeah.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: I think it's a it's like a seventy inch plus
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: side and like you said, like triple brow time's huge,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: like seven inch third brow time curling up off of it.
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: I mean it's a wild looking antler. Yeah yeah, and
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: then um, and then make sure it doesn't do it
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: justice though. Man, when I did it did to me
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: it didn't look like a huge shed. But man, that is.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: That's big. Seventy inches is big. Oh yeah, man, it's
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: I'm all on it right now. It's um. I barely
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: put my hand around it at the bottom of it.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I mean it's so it's got really good yeah, real
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: good mass carries it all the way through throughout the
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: main beam. I'll have to put a tape on it
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: here and see what ends up being. Yeah. We were
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: basing that estimated score off of Corey falls regulation that
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: he did via photo, so he's usually pretty accurate on those. Um.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: But Josh, you have to tell us what the actual
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: score is. And then after that, I found one more
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: on our way back to Shuttle the landowner a crossed.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I want to give you a chance to talk about
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: that moment um, because I I had some bad luck.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: I think that river was really raging. That was probably
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: what caused me to tip over. It was a difficult situation.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Cards were stacked against me. Um. But but further you
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: you then we got back to the river, and I said,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: I'm not going back across, and I'll be honest, I was.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I was pretty shook up. Like after that, I was.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I was pretty miserable, soaking wet, and I'm like, I'm
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: not going across that thing again. Palli it myself. So
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I'm like, Josh, Josh, you told you told me. You're like, well,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: you're already wet, so you should do it. And I
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: know I already experienced this. You need to have this
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: life experience too, and so you did it. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I did it. I did it. I actually think the
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: water was a little higher. I think a little bit faster.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: You run off. Oh no, dude. I made it across
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: there like a pro, you know, slow and steady. That's
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: you know, I told you that's my motto. I got.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: I got the landowner crossed, and I I was even
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: I was even talking to him on the way back,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: like nothing was even going on. And I just glided
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: right across that river like it was, you know, the
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: smoothest river in the world. I don't I don't know
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: if you knew this, Dan, but Josh was the two
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: thousand five Kennawan Hills Athlete of the Year and he
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: likes to remind us of that often. So as soon
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: as he got across the river. As soon as he
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: got across the river, he looks at me as his
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: athlete of the year. I just like to rub rub
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: it in Mark's face. Little. It was as as it
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: was pretty impressive. I think it was looked pretty good
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: coming across there. Yeah, yes, sailing that was good. And
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: so what was your guys is? Because you know you said,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I mean, you guys have said, well, we found a
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: shed here, we found a couple shed here. You know, Mark,
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: one day you found eight or something like that, But
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: for this whole trip, it sounds like you guys just
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: raked it in in total. Yeah. So the first like that,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: first North Code of the day we found none. Second
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: North Code of day we found five. The next North
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: quarter day we found six. Our first day in Montana
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: we found nine total because I found eight, Josh found one.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: And then this day that we were just talking about
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: was our best day, both of me and Josh's best
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: day of shed hunting either. Ever. Um, I found twelve
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: and Josh you found how many? I think I had eleven? Yeah,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: so we picked up twenty two sheds on this day. Um,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: and like nice ones. You know that that triple browton
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: one Josh talk about the really big hammer four points
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: side I found. I found several other really nice five
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: point sides, lots of nice like probably like hud pointer
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: type shed hunt sheds all on public ground, a mixture
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: of publican private. Yeah, because we had we had permission
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: from this one landowner and then we could access some
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: public through that too. Um so yeah, man, we we
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: pulled them in. I mean it was nuts. It was
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: it was a shed hunting day like nothing I've ever experienced. Um.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: You it's just it's what you dream of. It was
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: really like a dream shed hunt. Like so many times
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: I go shed hunting, I'm like, oh man, there's gotta
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: be one in there, and you go look in there
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: and then there's nothing. Um, and that happens over and
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: over and over again. But on this trip, many times
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: you're like, oh, there's gotta be a shed in there,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: and then you stick your head and they're like, oh,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: there's a big whole crown right there. Um. It was
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: just it was just I mean, it's it was unreal.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: It's just fun. I mean, it was shed hunting like
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: on steroids. Because you're actually finding lots of sheds. I
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: don't know you had a black Josh, I mean right,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I mean yeah, it was. I was glad I was
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: able to make it work get out there. Yeah, lots
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: of antlers, and again I found some more spots that
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: I want to hunt. I definitely feel more confident about
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: hunting this area again. Now, um, we found, like I said,
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: nice shed antlers in there. We also found several dead bucks,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: like nice bucks. Um, so while it's a bumper that
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: the buck's dead, it is indicative of the quality of
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: deer that ken survive out there. Um. So that made
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: me more confident in the general area. Um. And then
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: that final day we found another we had I think
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: we needed to find six antlers to get to fifty
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: for the trip. We're like, oh, you know, it doesn't matter,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: but it'd be cool if you get to fifty antlers.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: And we ended up finding our six antlers. So we
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: got to fifty and we're walking back to the truck
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: and we're just walking across another sage brush flat on
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: public land, and UM, we're just saying, oh man, it'd
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: be nice we get one of those sage brush surprises
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: like we did that one day in North Dakota, and
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: not seconds after saying that I got one, there's a
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: five point side right there in the middle of like
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: no man's land, nice little five point antler snagged that
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: and put us at fifty one UM, and that wrapped
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: up the trip. So it was nuts. I mean, I
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: think I found twenty eight antlers. I think Josh had
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: whatever the difference is twenty three or whatever or something
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: whatever that turns out to be. And I'm I've got
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: I've got seven or eight right next to me. They're
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: all like big antlers, like really nice ones. Um. And
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: then lots of like there's tons of two year old
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: bucks that we picked up, like small five point side
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: or small four point sides, um, but they're still cool antlers. UM.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: So this is it was. It was the best shed
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: hunting trip of my life. I had two days in
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: a row that were my best days ever. Um. And
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: then this makes it my best shed hunting year by
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: far ever, because I think I had I had fourteen.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: We had twelve sheds that I found up to this
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: point in twelve was my best year ever before this.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Now you had twenty two or twenty eight to that,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: and I'm at forty for the year, so I blew
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: my past best year out of the water. Um so
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: that was pretty cool. I've got a lot more antlers
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: to uh to adorn the cabinets with, and the tables,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and uh three or four new good public land spots
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: to hunt, and a great week of camping and walking around.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: So it was a great trip all on all in,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: not to mention, got to spend some time in a
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: place that you know, one of our leaders in the past,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: the other Roosevelt, was really inspired by and we got
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: to go experience that same place, which I think, I
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: don't know if you felt the same way, Josh, but
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: like that that was a powerful thing for me to
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: just sitting out there and thinking about it and looking
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: out there and imagining what this must have looked like
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: back then. And um, I've always found that pretty cool.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: Any thoughts, Dan, I got. Yeah, you you know, for
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: a while now you've mentioned this project you're working on
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: about public lands. Can you tell us when you're like,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: do day is or when you're goal to have it
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: completed is, so we can you know, start thinking about
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: getting you know, like buying it or or consuming it
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: or whatever it's gonna happen with it. Yeah, so I
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: still can't. I don't want to officially announce anything until
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: it's officially announced. Um. But yeah, it makes sense like
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: another Yeah, another entity will be announcing this, and so
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: I want to let that entity announce it first. But
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: probably if you've heard me talk about this in the past,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: you probably know what I'm talking about or maybe have
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: an idea of what I'm talking about. But basically, there's
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: this thing I've been working on for a long time
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: that involves writing that's big and it's gonna come out someday.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: So you can take a jump to conclusions, Matt and
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: figure this out yourself. Um, but I think there'll be
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: something you can purchase maybe next year, um, if things
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: go well. Um, but this is this kind of project
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: takes a long time, so it'll be announced when it's announced.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: It'll be announced when it's announced, and you'll learn about
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: it when. Yes, but it will include some discussion of
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: this shed hunting trip, which would be kind of fun.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Any final thoughts, Josh or Dan uh for wrap this
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: little storytime up? Oh man, I think just make sure
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: that when you go again, you holler at yours truly.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I'll make sure to put it out there and if
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: you can, if you can pull some magic off and
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: can clear this space, you definitely should try to do it.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Because already I won't even walk in front of you guys,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: I'll even make that promise. Well, we're already talking like
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: uh with the rest of the guys, the rest of
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: my buddies, that we should do our weird hunt shed
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: hunt out west next year. So you should definitely try
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: to just just plan on carving out some time Dan
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: in like late March, and we'll just hit several states
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: out west, find a bunch of public land, camp out
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: there with a bunch of people. Have to have a
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: lot of locations, but I think there's enough land that
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: you could say, Okay, you two hit this chunk, you
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: two hit this chunk, you two hit this chunk, and
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: you could do that for days and you would never
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: run out of spots. Um. So man, you know, I've
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: said it for years now on the podcast that I'm
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: just a sucker for the West, and it's been really
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: cool to be able to combine my love for that
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: area with my love for white tails. Um. And this
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: trip was just another really cool way to do that.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: So um, I'll be out there again. I can't wait,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: and um, hopefully you guys will be too, Josh, anything
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: else you want to add, Uh, Yeah, I hope we
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: didn't like set the expectation too high for us if
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: we go back out there again with our buddies or whatever.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: I think we got. I think we got a little
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: bit lucky just with the weather, um getting there right
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: after the stone milt during the week and all that
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: good stuff where I don't think it's really picked over
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: too much. But man, if we could hit it like
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: we did again, uh, we would definitely do well for
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: ourselves again. Um. But I just want to say thank
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: you for inviting me along, and Um, I had a
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: great time. We had a lot of fun, even though
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: we weren't shed hunting. We had said a lot of
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: fun even in the car. It's a long drive and
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: is just a good time. God, Yeah it was. We
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: laughed a lot, and I agree with your first point
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: being that we did get lucky in that. Yeah. I
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: don't think other people had shed hunting this stuff yet
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: because we heard that just like the week before the
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: weekend before there was snow over everything, So we got
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: to get out there before the weekend, just after snow melt,
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: so we're getting first pickings on a lot of stuff.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: So we we definitely did time it purely by luck
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: and that that happened really well. Um, So yeah, it
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: might not always be that good, but I agree we
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: had a good time. We laughed a lot. I embarrassed
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: myself a lot. That landowner, I still believe he really
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: thinks that there's probably something wrong with me. We we
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: just kept on joking about can you imagine what he's
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: telling his friends, Like the stories that are passed around
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: that town about this kid from Michigan. I'm sure a
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: lot of people got laughs. You know what's you know
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: what's funny though, Dan, me and me and Josh were
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: we're camping out intents just off the road. Um. And
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: so it's a small town out there, so I think
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: a lot of people drive down this road and they
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: usually don't see the cold people tent camping. Um. So
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: me and Josh, after we're done, we're heading out of town.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: We stopped this bar to get dinner um before starting
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: on drive back to Michigan. And as we come out,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: this woman stops me. I can't remember, how did that start? Oh?
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: She recognized the vehicle. I thing. She looks like, She's like, like,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: are you those guys that are tent camping up on
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: that road? And I was like, oh, yeah, that's that's us,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: And she looks at me right in the eye says,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: you guys are badass. I said, yes, ma'am, we are.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: So I met you that that comment right there made
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: you feel better than finding all of those ships, because
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: you probably could have beat me up. So I'm made
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: sure to tell my wife that right away, to that,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: Hey there's something out there. Thanks for pretty bad ass.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: So yeah, but as soon as the story of the
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: canoe gets gets around town, though, then it'll be oh, man,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: only one of you, only one of you is a
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: bad as that the Yeah exactly, that's exactly what they
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: think about me. So yeah, I didn't. I didn't the
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: show and the show alright, guys, good good times. I
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: can't wait till next year. And that is going to
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: do it for us. Thanks so much for sticking around
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: for this far ranging storytelling episode of sorts. We certainly
