- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Carlin and Nate Reyes it all.
- 0:11Starts. Right now.
- 0:15Welcome back to the Three O Take presented by SeatGeek.
- 0:18This is episode four 112. I'll be your host, Kyle Corden.
- 0:22I'm here with my Co host, Nate Reyes.
- 0:26Nate. Might be episode 412, but it is
- 0:30officially baseball season in 2024.
- 0:34Baseball's next. Next up, we got.
- 0:38Next baseball season is now our turn.
- 0:45Now we go. Let's play ball.
- 0:48Let's. Play ball.
- 0:51Spike's on. See you later.
- 0:54Football every year. Every year, right after the
- 1:00Super Bowl. And I I'll admit, I've
- 1:02contributed to those posts throughout the years.
- 1:04But no longer. No longer.
- 1:05I I don't I'm not doing any of it.
- 1:08It's so it the trendy stop. We get it.
- 1:12We're we're in this weird, like, depressive state of like, you
- 1:17know, what do I do with my hands Kind of thing.
- 1:21Just sit. Here, not the Dodgers.
- 1:25Dodgers been spring training clips.
- 1:30Dodgers been getting after it for a few days now getting ready
- 1:34for the Korea series. But yes, baseball is officially
- 1:37back. I I mean, it is what it is.
- 1:44We we get to this point every year.
- 1:46It's great seeing the guys back in all that and more.
- 1:50More to come as the week progresses with report dates,
- 1:55getting here, the 13th, the 14th, 15th even.
- 1:58I think. But you know it.
- 2:02It is what it is. Things really aren't going to
- 2:04start picking up. I mean, there's there's a
- 2:05handful of guys out there that don't even have a home yet and
- 2:08we got pitchers and catchers reporting.
- 2:10So you I think if we're being honest, there's a a cap on how
- 2:16excited we can genuinely be at this at this point of the year.
- 2:19But here we are. Spring training is meaning less
- 2:26and less to fans, and it's meaning more to players.
- 2:31You know what I mean? Like, you were just talking
- 2:33about how guys are showing up early, and I know the Dodgers
- 2:36like having that, the early series, but that's just a thing
- 2:41now. Like players like show up a
- 2:43month before they're supposed to report.
- 2:46And I feel like us fans are like, I just get me an opening
- 2:50day. I don't care.
- 2:53Do whatever you need to do to get ready and stay healthy.
- 2:56I don't care outside of that and I'm in a state where you can go
- 3:02watch games, which I will. Don't get me wrong.
- 3:07I just feel like we care less and less about Spring Training.
- 3:10It doesn't have the hype that it used to be used to have, and
- 3:13especially with guys that like sign, go do something.
- 3:19What are we doing? What are you waiting for?
- 3:26There's like, top There's one name in the middle of the
- 3:30lineup, and then there's two frontline starters.
- 3:35What are we doing? Why do they not have a home?
- 3:39What are we waiting for? Spend money?
- 3:43Go get these guys. What team outside of?
- 3:48Maybe the Dodgers are saying our rotation's set, We're good.
- 3:53We don't need a center fielder who can also play first base,
- 3:56who also won an MVP who can also hit in the middle, middle of the
- 4:00order. We're good.
- 4:01What do you like? Go do something.
- 4:06How about that Super Bowl, though?
- 4:12I mean, what are we doing? We already knew we could see
- 4:18that coming from a mile away. America was rooting for the
- 4:21Niners. America outside.
- 4:25Here's the thing. Overweight people in the Middle
- 4:27East or in the Middle East? The the middle?
- 4:30Yep. Middle Oh.
- 4:33Known football Midwest out there in the Middle East.
- 4:36Yeah, outside of the overweight BBQ drooling people in the
- 4:42Midwest. That was an unnecessary stray if
- 4:46I do this on myself. Do we have some if we have
- 4:48Chiefs fans listening to us? Look, I started.
- 4:54I just wanted. I didn't want the Chiefs to win
- 4:58because I'm a I'm certainly a Brady supporter and and the
- 5:04legacy that that entails. But because of that, I I didn't
- 5:08want Mahomes to get that much closer to not even remotely
- 5:15touching that legacy. But I did want to see the Chiefs
- 5:18win just because I wanted to see if the Internet would break with
- 5:23a proposal after the after the game.
- 5:25It happened the the Chiefs did win, but the proposal did not
- 5:29happen. So kind of kind of a lose, lose
- 5:34there, you know? It's awful.
- 5:38It's awful, dude. I'm just.
- 5:40I'm so done. I'm so done, I'm all done.
- 5:47All the off field garbage. I don't want it anymore.
- 5:54I don't want it like just play football.
- 5:58Let's just talk and watch football.
- 6:01Leave everything else out, all the other stuff, and it's just
- 6:07like we're just it's shoved down your throat.
- 6:14All done. No mas.
- 6:16Did you like any commercials? Let's get to some positive
- 6:19stuff. Did you like commercials?
- 6:21Anything stick out? I've I've said before, I'll say
- 6:24it again. I don't even care that we're not
- 6:27sponsored by them. I'll I'll throw free ads left
- 6:30and right for the For these folks Dunkin' Donuts.
- 6:32Shout out Dunkin for their superb collection of
- 6:37advertisements this Super Bowl season.
- 6:40I I feel like superb is a very generous word.
- 6:43What was that Ben Affleck one? What was that I?
- 6:46Mean. Anytime you put Ben Affleck and
- 6:48Matt Damon in the same room, it's it's bound to.
- 6:52It's bound to happen. And then you throw Tom Brady in
- 6:55there. I I will say I I can do without
- 6:58the what? What is that girl's name?
- 7:02Jlo. Aren't.
- 7:03No. I know Jlo.
- 7:04No. Aren't they like twins?
- 7:05Or they're like Tiktok dancers. Charlie Diamelo or whatever her
- 7:11name is, Charlie Dixie Diamelo. Charlie Dixie.
- 7:16Couldn't. Couldn't even give you a guess.
- 7:19The Heart of Dixie, I don't know.
- 7:20Wanna something like that? They they were in the series
- 7:24Jack Harlow main appearance and not to mention they they threw
- 7:30out free iced coffee for folks this morning.
- 7:34Just nag one, yeah? Yeah, I did.
- 7:38Started my week off with a nice iced Duncan shout out from a
- 7:42Code Dunk Kings that was that was that was a big one for me.
- 7:48It's tough. It's tough.
- 7:51I like the couch potato one. Did you see that one for like
- 7:54Pluto, TV or whatever? I did, yeah.
- 7:57That. One was pretty good.
- 7:58I see that one. That was pretty funny.
- 7:59I like that one. A little creative there.
- 8:03Was that the one with Captain Kirk?
- 8:05And who else was in that one? I don't remember.
- 8:12It was one where they were like, it was like a farmer and there's
- 8:15like showing him like working his land or whatever.
- 8:18And instead of potatoes, there was just like people sitting in
- 8:21dirt and they're like have like a whole potato costume and they.
- 8:24Just have TV. In front of him and they're just
- 8:27like watching garbage, like eating popcorn and stuff.
- 8:30And he's just like like as a farmers, like laying the land
- 8:34and working the land and stuff. He's just putting TV's in front.
- 8:36He's like, we've been growing, we've been growing couch
- 8:40potatoes for the last 60 years or whatever.
- 8:42It's funny. It's good.
- 8:44Yeah, on the whole commercials thing.
- 8:48It really started to fade. Well, I'll tell you what
- 8:51happened is it used to be a thing.
- 8:54Where shock value really drew people to certain commercials.
- 8:59But everything is shock value now our our dope as human
- 9:03beings. Our dopamine receptors are fried
- 9:05like we you can't show us anything.
- 9:09You can show people streaking across the TV and we'll be like
- 9:12sweet where are the snacks? You know like you can't There's
- 9:16nothing that you can put up on the TV now where people are
- 9:19gonna be like wow that is incredible.
- 9:23Especially when when the the recipe now for a Super Bowl ad
- 9:28is like in a a celebrity appearance.
- 9:30I saw a tweet where it was like celebrity appearance, A witty
- 9:35joke and a promo code or something.
- 9:39It's like, that's right. That's that's every year, every
- 9:43commercial man. Not even do you have a, do you
- 9:48have a? Halftime show rating for Usher.
- 9:52It was. I mean it was good.
- 9:54I didn't have anything negative to say about it.
- 9:56I'd. I will say I think there was a
- 9:58lot going on with the back background dancers at first.
- 10:01Like usually they're all wearing the same thing.
- 10:03But when he first started they were there was like 30-40
- 10:06different costumes going on behind him.
- 10:08It was it was a lot to process. Yeah.
- 10:11But shout out to my man for the roller, The roller skating,
- 10:15yeah, that's big time. That's big time.
- 10:19That's tough. I get that like, he is a dancer
- 10:24and he was dancing a lot. And like, I get that.
- 10:27Like, it proves that he wasn't lip syncing because he was like
- 10:32only singing like every 10th word of his songs.
- 10:37Did you notice that? Yeah, that was man, who's
- 10:39working drenched, sweating dude, man was putting in the.
- 10:45Work. He's got to be like pushing 60
- 10:47at this point, so. He we looked up last night.
- 10:49He is 45. Jeez, I would have guessed way
- 10:53older. Good for him.
- 10:55Good for him. I thought it was an OK show.
- 10:57I I more singing would have done more for me.
- 11:00But I think like they hit, he hit every song.
- 11:03Have like he ran through his collection.
- 11:05Lil Jon come out, Ludacris come out.
- 11:09I think Fat was Fat Joe out there at one point.
- 11:12Alicia Keys like Solid. Solid.
- 11:20Yeah, millennials were were, were, vibing, that's for sure.
- 11:24Can't say anything or I can't speak for any other generation,
- 11:26but millennials were vibing. Yeah, it's a middle of the road
- 11:29performance. I think it it was good for
- 11:31halftime show. We're not going to remember it
- 11:3415 years from now. Let's talk some baseball.
- 11:40Jose Al Tuve Last week. Yep, Yep.
- 11:43Baseball season. Remember, baseball is back.
- 11:46Baseball now. Now we go.
- 11:50We got next baseball on Jose Al. Baseball on deck.
- 11:58String Training starts now. Jose Al Tuve signed A5 year
- 12:04extension last week. 5 minutes after our episode happens every
- 12:08time. Yeah, love that every time.
- 12:12Well, it was like the next day I think because we record.
- 12:15Oh, we recorded on Mondays. He signed it on Tuesday.
- 12:17So playing a little bit of catch up here, five years, 125 mil,
- 12:22effectively making him an Astro for life.
- 12:27Do we like this move? Was it expected?
- 12:33I didn't expect it. I don't.
- 12:36Did you? Yeah, I you did.
- 12:41I I don't. I didn't see them letting Altuve
- 12:44go anywhere. How old is he?
- 12:4833 so. This takes him to 38.
- 12:55I think just because of his stature, he's got to play like a
- 12:58style of play that doesn't, I don't see, like really fading in
- 13:03his 30s. There may be some pop that
- 13:05starts to go, but like, I just like his tools.
- 13:10I don't maybe a little bit of speed, but like even then he's
- 13:14still an above average speed guy.
- 13:17So like it. I think he's fine. 25 mil a year
- 13:23may hurt at age 3738, but overall, like, it's kind of like
- 13:27a legacy contract. Like, hey, this is what you've
- 13:29provided the organization. You sell out jerseys.
- 13:33You sell out tickets like it's we'll we'll pay ya.
- 13:44Yeah, I don't. It didn't like, surprise me.
- 13:50I don't feel that fired up about it.
- 13:55Can we just can we acknowledge the elephant in the room right
- 13:58now? I.
- 13:59Hate him. That's the elephant.
- 14:01No, the elephant in the room is I don't you say you're it
- 14:03doesn't fire you up. I don't think anything's really
- 14:05getting you fired up right now. You're wiped from the weekend,
- 14:08so let's just let's get that out of the way.
- 14:11Yeah, I was at the Waste Management open yesterday.
- 14:13I'm pretty well, pretty wiped. And the Super Bowl.
- 14:17Right after I I can't even follow you.
- 14:21I laid around and did nothing but eat food yesterday and I'm
- 14:24wiped. Too old for this stuff.
- 14:27Had too much pizza. Yeah.
- 14:31I I I don't know. I I guess it it makes sense.
- 14:36Like it makes sense. I want to continue to hate you.
- 14:39I'm going to continue to hate you.
- 14:41It's easier if you're in the same uniform for me.
- 14:45Sure there's a lot of fans that share that that sentiment.
- 14:48So do you continue to just somehow can keep producing and
- 14:56just doing random stuff that steals awards from people and
- 15:03somehow they sneak into the World Series every year?
- 15:04They're like the chiefs of the MLB.
- 15:06And I'm just, I can't, I can't do it anymore.
- 15:11I can't do it. So.
- 15:14Well, one thing we can say is that this deal guarantees 'cause
- 15:23this is this starts 2025 S This guarantees minimum six years of
- 15:34continued trash can and buzzer jokes, the same recycled content
- 15:40that we've seen for the last three or four years.
- 15:48So that's what we're working with.
- 15:51I I'm over it. I I really AM.
- 15:58I I'm not like I'm not tapping into that I know you're no.
- 16:02No. No, no, no, Yeah, I get, I I
- 16:05feel, yeah, I totally get where you're coming from.
- 16:07But I'm talking about the people that quite literally, verbatim
- 16:11are recycling the same jokes, the same jabs on social media as
- 16:15if we haven't heard them 6000 times to date.
- 16:19Right. I totally get where you're
- 16:22coming from. You're kind of just staying in
- 16:24your. And I think if we're being
- 16:26honest I think a lot of people are like that they've they've
- 16:29since rescinded their public outcry about the whole situation
- 16:34and they're just kind of in their in their quiet corner not
- 16:38liking him from afar And I that's totally OK.
- 16:41But we gotta, we gotta cool it with the with the trash can
- 16:46references. It's it's a little little tired,
- 16:49little tired at this point. I'm excited to see where he gets
- 16:56that like weird two or three weeks of having the yips at
- 17:02second base, You know, I'm talking about every year happens
- 17:06every year and there's something like I like it.
- 17:08It's like a it's like a Chuck knob lock thing where he just
- 17:12forgets how to do stuff. I'm just bitter, I guess.
- 17:19Let's. But who am I if I'm not me?
- 17:21We're gonna, yeah, let's let's try to find something in this
- 17:24list of topics that we've got today that are maybe 11 down.
- 17:30No, no dice on on Jose Altuve or the Super Bowl.
- 17:34So really, two down, No dice. My last thing on that is that
- 17:36they still came out and said that they're wanting to extend
- 17:39Bregman like he is 100%, like they're only seeing him as an
- 17:44Astro. So even with this, yeah, and the
- 17:50hater signing, I would have guessed that they had to choose.
- 17:56You were either gonna get Bregman or Altuve.
- 17:58I didn't realize that they're doubling down, They're saying,
- 18:01and you know, like, you know, Tucker's got to get paid too.
- 18:04I don't know. But it's it's interesting.
- 18:07'Cause you were, Don's taken care of?
- 18:09You were, Don? 'S Altuve is now good.
- 18:14And Verlander has how much left? You got to assume that's they're
- 18:21probably. 2. I feel like it's two.
- 18:24I feel like they're going to structure things a little more
- 18:29back loaded for Bregman while they're carrying Verlander money
- 18:37until it's over. Then you'll see a pickup in
- 18:40salary for Bregman, I think. Vested option 2025, Free agent
- 18:482026. So two more years.
- 18:52Vested's probably like an innings thing.
- 18:55It's gotta be a. 140 pitch this year.
- 19:02Which, barring a knee injury, is pretty much a slam dunk, Yeah.
- 19:11If you're the Astros, I'm all I'm all about legacy moves and
- 19:14all that. But if you're the Astros, the
- 19:18much, much more wise investment would be Kyle Tucker, no?
- 19:24Yeah, yes. And if they if that's how their
- 19:29the decision goes, where they keep Bregman and Altuve and
- 19:32Tucker moves on. I don't know Tucker's agent but
- 19:38boys are going to get paid. Lefty pop plus defense.
- 19:44He's going to get paid. Maybe he maybe he's already came
- 19:48out and said he's not willing to extend.
- 19:49Maybe he's going to you know maybe that discussion is just
- 19:53the Astros. Know that.
- 19:57Not even thinking about fit positionally or like team needs
- 20:03or anything. Just give me off the top of the
- 20:05Dome. What's a jersey you could see
- 20:08Kyle Tucker playing in? If he chooses not to come back
- 20:10to Houston. With like, no fit, Just like how
- 20:16he looks in a jersey, you're saying?
- 20:17Just just, well, I mean, like a team's gonna need an outfielder.
- 20:22Let's just assume they're gonna need an outfielder.
- 20:24But don't. Don't.
- 20:26Like, think breakdown, Just think vibes here.
- 20:29Just think, vibes. Phillies.
- 20:30Kyle. Tucker.
- 20:32Really. I don't know why.
- 20:34It just makes sense for me. Fitz sandwich someone in between
- 20:42him and Harper as Bryce finishes out the middle of his 30 year
- 20:50contract. Yeah, I like that.
- 20:55Weird, right? Weird how you know, because at
- 20:57that point, I'm assuming Schwarber's moving on.
- 21:00I think Castellanos, probably. It's probably all done at that
- 21:04point, yeah. Yeah, I hate to say it.
- 21:07Philly's. Probably need to shake things
- 21:10up, get a little more athletic. Yeah, they're already looking
- 21:13for ways to, yeah, ship him out. Yeah, yeah, that's AI like that.
- 21:18That's a good pick. Kind of off the cuff there,
- 21:20yeah. Right off the top of the Dome, I
- 21:21like it. Clayton Kershaw moving right
- 21:24along here, signed a one year contract that includes a player
- 21:28option for 2025. He will player option back.
- 21:36Yeah. Wild, right?
- 21:37Yeah, especially with the way the last, what, four to five
- 21:42years worth of contracts for him has gone.
- 21:46Yeah, we'll not be back, at least for the first half.
- 21:51But they're good. They're straight, they're
- 21:52chilling in that rotation. No need to rush this man any
- 21:58more than you have to. Picture perfect scenario for
- 22:01him. And they're talking about Ohtani
- 22:05potentially trying to get back in time for the postseason.
- 22:10Here's what I'm going to say. That would be Dodgers fans out
- 22:13there. I'm tired.
- 22:15I'm tired of you throwing nonsense at my boy Clayton.
- 22:19Shut it down. The man's a Hall of Famer.
- 22:23The man's an absolute legend. The man's getting a statue
- 22:26outside your stadium. Show some respect.
- 22:29Show some respect. I don't want to hear about post
- 22:35season struggles. This man earned his contracts.
- 22:39He's earned his his ability to end his career as a Dodger.
- 22:45So do what you need to do Dodgers to make it work for
- 22:50Clayton. If it means no more giving him
- 22:54post season starts, if it means he comes in the back back end of
- 22:58a bullpen and closes down a game, throws 3 innings, 4.
- 23:01I don't know. I don't know.
- 23:06My man's a Dodger. It's cute.
- 23:10He's from Dallas. We could talk Rangers all we
- 23:12want. Fine, You can.
- 23:15You can be upset. Ranger fans, but Dodger fans,
- 23:20No. This man belongs.
- 23:23He stays. Never.
- 23:25He's never going to Texas. Let's be real.
- 23:27He was never going to Texas. I thought it was a possibility.
- 23:30I hear you about Dodgers fans complaining and calling him Wash
- 23:36and everything. Look, I he'd had.
- 23:39He's coming off of back-to-back years of sub three ER as in fact
- 23:42I want to say sub 25. ER as in in consecutive years
- 23:48close if not sub 25. But look man we saw it last
- 23:55year. The the postseason bug is real
- 23:58with this guy. So.
- 23:59So that at least I I think is warranted, but yeah, I I see
- 24:10both sides of it. I had your legend about the the
- 24:14player option. That's surprising.
- 24:16It is surprising. Would have guessed A1 year
- 24:21vesting option, but I guess with him coming coming back halfway
- 24:27through the year it's like you can't really do that.
- 24:29Sub 2/5 He had 246 in 2023 and A228 in 2022, back-to-back All
- 24:36Star years. Just a little, just.
- 24:39I mean, what are we doing, Dodger fans?
- 24:42Manage this guy. Just let him.
- 24:45Let him get his rest. OK?
- 24:46Let's go full NBA mode. Let him do what he needs to do.
- 24:54How old is he again? And he's like your 35, he's like
- 24:56your 7 starter. So calm down.
- 25:00Yeah. Rough life.
- 25:01Clayton Kershaw coming in as like your spot starter in the
- 25:05second-half of the year. Tough.
- 25:07He's gonna be 36 this year he's he turns 36 and give or take a
- 25:12month, I'm. Gonna defend my guy.
- 25:20That's insane, dude. He's going to be 36 and we've
- 25:22been what? Not?
- 25:23We people have been throwing the Washed label out there for what
- 25:30seems like the better half of a decade.
- 25:34Just doesn't get enough respect. Wild don't get no respect.
- 25:40Former teammate of Clayton Kershaw, Trevor Bauer, making
- 25:45news as of late, specifically on Twitter, seems to be where he
- 25:50makes most of his news. He he's been campaigning come
- 25:55sort of, dare I say come out of a shell The last week or two
- 26:02'cause there for a while he was. He was a little little quiet
- 26:05understandably so but as of late has really made a strong push, a
- 26:09strong public push to get his his name back out there again
- 26:14and get it back on the minds of these front offices about a
- 26:19possible option in in their rotation and has been making his
- 26:24pitch. He put, he put out a tweet the
- 26:26other day it said Blake Snell is going to get hundreds of
- 26:29millions of dollars on a multi year deal and he should.
- 26:31He deserves it for a team that doesn't want to commit multi
- 26:34years, hundreds of millions of dollars or many elite prospects.
- 26:38For Cy Young Award winner, they could sign me for a league
- 26:41minimum and pay 0 incremental dollars over what they have to
- 26:45pay to that roster spot anyway. Just another option for teams
- 26:50that want to win and don't want to break the bank.
- 26:54You mentioned it last episode. He's been making his rounds on
- 26:57the podcasts as I mentioned just campaigning hard on on social
- 27:02media and he's made it very clear.
- 27:05I don't remember what platform I saw it, but he was all but
- 27:08begging, saying just just give me a chance.
- 27:12He's saying I I know that I'm capable of of doing this.
- 27:15He says I'm I'm still, even after miss time I'm still one of
- 27:19the best pitchers on the planet. I I just want an opportunity to
- 27:22prove that with a Major League team and as we mentioned
- 27:27pitchers and catchers are reporting this week and does not
- 27:30have a home. Do we think he finds a home?
- 27:35Before Spring training or before Opening Day.
- 27:38Let's just say before opening day, I mean he's, I I highly
- 27:42doubt he's going to find anything in the next two to
- 27:46five, two to four days. I'm going to say no.
- 27:48I'm going to say no before before Opening Day.
- 27:52Do you? He countersued.
- 27:56Like as like a defamation lawsuit, right?
- 28:00I I believe so. I think we.
- 28:04Talked about. That on here, that's a good
- 28:09question. Cause follow me here, I've
- 28:12watched Suits, I know what I'm talking about.
- 28:14Exactly he by the way, Mike and Harvey made an appearance on the
- 28:20Super Bowl commercial. I did see that.
- 28:21That was big. Fan.
- 28:22Big fan. That was cool.
- 28:24That was cool. That was cool.
- 28:26Anyway, continue. If that case is not closed, if
- 28:32the defamation lawsuit has not been settled, this media tour
- 28:41that he's on, 'cause think about how he's been.
- 28:47He's never really gone around and done stuff.
- 28:52He's got his channel and he wants his fans to watch but
- 28:57rarely as he's like making rounds, dude like going on
- 29:00you're talking like media on like the media rounds and stuff
- 29:02has nothing to do, you know what I'm saying?
- 29:04So like he's going around, it's not just baseball podcasts, he's
- 29:09going on that like Pat, Bev, David or whatever that the
- 29:14financial guy he does podcasts, he's going all over the place.
- 29:18So it's not just baseball related.
- 29:20I think in my mind, if this settlement is not closed, if he
- 29:25if that's still going, this is just more evidence because he's
- 29:30coming out and saying I will, I will literally play for League
- 29:36minimum anywhere you want. You name it, I'll do it.
- 29:42If he still can't get that, that is literally all the evidence
- 29:47you need for proof of defamation.
- 29:50You've destroyed my character. That's what he's saying to this
- 29:55girl. You've destroyed my character to
- 29:57the point where I can't even do my job.
- 30:01Whether you like Trevor Bauer or not is a different story.
- 30:03I'm not particularly a huge fan of him.
- 30:05I know you're not either. It's just it's not my he's not
- 30:08my cup of tea of of personality. But I can respect the fact that
- 30:16from what? From what Law is saying, he was
- 30:20innocent and now he can't do his job anymore.
- 30:27This is the ultimate definition of defamation, and maybe it's a
- 30:35little bit of that as well. Yeah, I'm sure he wants back.
- 30:38I'm sure he wants to play. Duh.
- 30:40But this could also be a part of it too.
- 30:43Proving that say I'm going everywhere.
- 30:45I'm telling everyone I'm willing to play for a bag of chips and I
- 30:49still can't get a job because of what occurred.
- 30:54So back in October I'm I'm reading cuz it I little foggy on
- 31:02the details here so I had to had to pull it up back in October
- 31:06which I I I feel like I remember talking about this on here.
- 31:10I just don't remember to what extent we covered it because I
- 31:13think some details are still coming out.
- 31:15But it says here that Bauer sued a San Diego woman by the name of
- 31:21Lindsay Hill for defamation. She countersued for assault and
- 31:25sexual battery. It says neither side or no.
- 31:30It says their settlements calls for no exchange of money between
- 31:35the parties, but the woman will receive a separate $300,000
- 31:40payout from insurance her attorney.
- 31:44So they have settled the legal dispute I think is was your
- 31:50original question. Again, and I said it at the
- 31:56beginning of the episode, I mean say what you will about Bauer,
- 31:59be he at the very minimum even with being out last year and not
- 32:03being in the bigs like or even you know, half a year before
- 32:07that as well. I I'm fully confident, as much
- 32:11as I'm not a huge fan of them, I'm fully confident he can step
- 32:15in and give you 140 a 150 innings and be at the back end
- 32:19of a rotation that he could wake up and do that he could wake up
- 32:25and do that. So that the risk outside of like
- 32:28a a public relations standpoint is very low.
- 32:33It's whether you want to deal with the PR stuff, which is the
- 32:36obvious wall, or block for pretty much all these teams.
- 32:41And I think a lot of these teams realize that to like oh league a
- 32:46minimum for this guy, sign me up.
- 32:49But you can't, because although that risk is essentially non
- 32:58existent, the risk that does come into play is what you're
- 33:02talking about, is the the circus that comes with it in terms of
- 33:06public relations and with as negative of a light that he was
- 33:13under regardless, regardless the outcome.
- 33:17There were a lot of takes thrown around by fans, by team or by
- 33:21teammates, by maybe even league officials.
- 33:26If I recall, just everybody was throwing out their take on the
- 33:30situation and it brought a lot of negative PR to this guy.
- 33:37And I even despite making the media rounds like you were
- 33:40talking about, I don't think he's been able to shake that.
- 33:43And I just don't think these teams want to put up with it as
- 33:46as much as I think the majority of them recognize how much of
- 33:51value he could potentially provide their team.
- 33:55Which is tough. Which is tough cause again,
- 33:59whether you're like we're not according to our judicial
- 34:03system, he is innocent and that's that's tough.
- 34:08And this isn't the first time that we've seen guys with these
- 34:12types of allegations come back and pitch.
- 34:14There's precedent. Again, I've watched suits.
- 34:18I know these words, there's precedent.
- 34:20You know what I mean? Like, you've seen guys come
- 34:21back, seen guys come back on this team, seen guys come back
- 34:25on a lot of different teams that have had this dark cloud of off
- 34:31the field difficulties and be able to overcome it.
- 34:35Winning solves a lot, right? So there's just, I I don't know,
- 34:40man. Like it's not like they need
- 34:42them, but like if you were to throw them on the Astros, this
- 34:45team is already hated around the league and you're already
- 34:50getting booed. Like, why not?
- 34:53You know what I mean? Add them into the rotation, keep
- 34:55winning and just turn into the skid.
- 34:58Be hated, make it motivate you. I don't know.
- 35:04It's just it's it's it's tough. I I get it.
- 35:08I don't like him. But it is tough to see that,
- 35:11like other players have been able to overcome this and step
- 35:13right back into playing. But because of the name and the
- 35:18magnitude of stardom that he had when it happened, that's hurting
- 35:22him. It's pretty weird.
- 35:25This whole thing's weird. I assuming we have not seen the
- 35:31last of Trevor Bauer in Major League Baseball.
- 35:35I think it's almost inevitable that you're going to see a team
- 35:38who maybe at this current point in time is taking the moral High
- 35:44Road again, regardless, regardless of what the the legal
- 35:50outcome was there. I think the reason these teams
- 35:53are posturing the way that they are is to to make, to give off
- 35:56the appearance that they're taking the moral high roads.
- 35:58And even though he was innocent at a legal level, we don't want
- 36:04to associate with somebody with this character, yadda yadda
- 36:07yadda. But I think it's inevitable that
- 36:11a team is going to get desperate and they're going to, they're
- 36:15going to push that to the side and say, yeah, morals, ethics,
- 36:20we didn't really care about those anyway.
- 36:22Who are we really kidding? And they're going to go pick
- 36:23this guy up and then he's going to go out and do his thing.
- 36:26And the the the organization is going to forget all about
- 36:31everything that that he brought with him.
- 36:34Which again, it's it's really foggy, it's really, there's a
- 36:39lot of Gray area. It's really, it's a very
- 36:41confusing situation. But I just think that that's
- 36:45gonna be the end result that we're gonna be faced with.
- 36:48I I I understand both sides. I really genuinely do.
- 36:52And if if you're a dad bringing your eight-year old son to a
- 36:56ballpark and he steps onto the mound and the entire stadium is
- 37:00booing him and that eight-year old turns and looks at you and
- 37:03says why are they booing him? Dad, you have to have that
- 37:06conversation. And I'm sure there's plenty of
- 37:08organizations that are saying we don't want that.
- 37:11And I understand, I genuinely do.
- 37:15But I do understand his side of it as well.
- 37:18And I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer to this,
- 37:20but maybe there is a team where the the fandom support or the
- 37:27immediate success that they may achieve could somewhat wash out
- 37:36the stink that he comes with. Because remember, look, aside
- 37:46from from this case that we're talking about or the suit or
- 37:50whatever that you have to remember, he came that before
- 37:53this even happened, there was a lot of other crap that he was
- 37:56that he was involved with. Not maybe legally, but just.
- 38:02Give me something with this with his hand getting cut.
- 38:05Yeah, the drama that just constantly followed him that was
- 38:09mostly self created. I'm not gonna sit here and
- 38:12pretend like it was anybody else's fault, but I think you
- 38:17you take all these things you factor in all of these other
- 38:21situations that he's been caught up in.
- 38:23And I don't know. I just think I I think it makes
- 38:27sense why he still is without a home right now.
- 38:30But like I said I think I think somebody will get desperate and
- 38:32come calling. That's that's my gut Speaking of
- 38:39coming. Hang on.
- 38:42Oh sorry. I thought I got AI.
- 38:44Thought I got a update. Say what?
- 38:46Nothing. No, I said.
- 38:47Speaking of coming and calling. Vegas Mayor said no thanks.
- 38:54You can keep your you can keep your A's in Oakland.
- 38:57We're good. We'll pass.
- 39:02Yeah. Which just adds a whole nother
- 39:05layer to this what seemed inevitable, A's moved to Vegas.
- 39:15She what's her name? Carolyn Goodman, She said.
- 39:23I've lived in this town six years and so I know the town
- 39:25like the back of my hand. I personally think they've got
- 39:28to figure out a way to stay in Oakland and make their dream
- 39:31come true. I love the little Disney twist
- 39:34there at the end, but she is all but saying we're good.
- 39:39We'll pass. Thanks, Beno.
- 39:44Thanks. I'm so over this.
- 39:48Just go somewhere. I don't care.
- 39:50Go somewhere else then to make this happen.
- 39:53Oakland isn't working. All 1200 fans that are fighting
- 39:59for it can relax. I don't know.
- 40:03We were just, we just FaceTime. One of our listeners the other
- 40:07day and he's from Utah and he's like truly in his core, believes
- 40:13that the A's are going to Salt Lake City.
- 40:19I can't see it. I don't.
- 40:21I don't see it. But I at this point I could see
- 40:24it over Vegas. I mean, it seems like this is
- 40:28really trying to be shoved along and it's not panning out.
- 40:33I I. Mean.
- 40:35There's so many things to read in between the lines here.
- 40:38Is it maybe because it's still attached to an owner that
- 40:41refuses to spend? You can't go to Vegas and not
- 40:45spend, you know what I mean? There's no other like there was
- 40:49a stink around the Davis family for the Raiders.
- 40:52Duh. For generations.
- 40:54Those guys are nuts. But they spend money and they're
- 40:57entertaining. Days are boring and this owner
- 41:01does nothing. So don't come to my city and
- 41:04provide zero. He's got to sell.
- 41:10There's no other way around this.
- 41:12You got to sell. Get out your own city doesn't.
- 41:16I mean, your own city. Your fans are fighting you.
- 41:19Your own city doesn't want you. A new city doesn't want you.
- 41:22You're the common denominator. Sell the team.
- 41:26Get out. Major League Baseball needs to
- 41:28take over this team and move it wherever you need to move it.
- 41:31But take over 'cause this is embarrassing.
- 41:35It's honestly embarrassing. I don't know why this is coming
- 41:44out now. Like, I don't know if this mayor
- 41:47has been outspoken prior to this point, prior to this quote that
- 41:51dropped. When did it drop?
- 41:56Like late, late last week I. Mean just for the weekend?
- 42:00Super Bowl in Vegas? It's all eyes on Vegas, you
- 42:02know? No, no.
- 42:03No, I mean, I I get it. But I'm saying why?
- 42:07Why are we now hearing these types of things, especially from
- 42:12people that you would just assume are in a position of
- 42:15support for a move like this if the mayor is going, Yeah, I
- 42:22know, I know the whole perceived scenario here is that you're
- 42:29closing up shop in Oakland and coming here, but I I never
- 42:34agreed to this. Then why were we so quick to
- 42:42wrap up the Oakland A's story? Like, why?
- 42:47Why are we just shutting that down now?
- 42:48Because as of right now, I mean, not that the Vegas mayor has
- 42:53much pull in this regard, but like if Vegas doesn't want you,
- 42:58you don't have a home beyond the the lease of the Coliseum,
- 43:02you're you're in a tight spot. You're in a real tight spot.
- 43:06Sell. You're going to lose money, but
- 43:10sell. I don't know when he bought it
- 43:12or how much for, but it's going to get to the point where the
- 43:16league needs to step in and take over, dude.
- 43:19Like this is you look at the race, you know what I mean?
- 43:24Like everyone around the league, every other fan base, has just
- 43:26absolutely trashed the trop for, right?
- 43:29Or rightfully so. But they're doing different
- 43:34things. And you see an effort and you
- 43:36see competitiveness and you see a way to build an organization,
- 43:42a way to build a franchise. To be fair, it's apples and
- 43:44oranges because of how old the A's are.
- 43:46But at the same time, you're seeing effort.
- 43:52And now look, right now there's plenty of conversations about
- 43:56moving stadiums and doing a new location, making it easier for
- 43:59it. Like, this is it you?
- 44:01You do this for a few years and you prove that you can do what
- 44:05you need to do. The A's are doing nothing.
- 44:07The A's are doing nothing. You're not trying to reinvent
- 44:11the wheel in any way. The the the A's need to take the
- 44:15Ray's approach and like invest in yourself, try to do it in a
- 44:20budgetary way. And you did it for a flash in
- 44:24the pan with Billy Beane, and there's a movie made about it,
- 44:27but outside of that, there's nothing else going on.
- 44:33We're looking at 2 decades later.
- 44:35From that, by the way. And you get freaking All Stars
- 44:41that you don't pay. You trade for bags of chips and
- 44:47rinse, repeat. It's tough, dude.
- 44:54It's tough. You see other teams making
- 44:57efforts. I just don't.
- 45:00I'm. I'm all done.
- 45:02Dissolve it. I'm done with the A's.
- 45:04Change your name, Move cities. I don't care, but this owner's
- 45:08got to go. I saw Portland is making a push.
- 45:18They've been in the conversation for a while, but.
- 45:22Portland. Nashville.
- 45:23Charlotte I'm assuming or all I actually I just conversation.
- 45:28Yeah, I just put out a post today.
- 45:29Actually, it's a map. It's on Facebook showing all of
- 45:35the just the the vast nothingness that is the United
- 45:45States when it comes to not having a Major League team.
- 45:49Yeah, I mean it. You've got your hot spots at all
- 45:50your various cities, but 90% of the United States does not have
- 45:56a team, obviously. But it's just crazy when you see
- 46:00a a visualization of where Major League Baseball exists, where it
- 46:04doesn't exist and you're you just look around the map and
- 46:07you're like I I could see a fit there.
- 46:09I could see a fit there. I mean North Carolina could use
- 46:13a team. Nashville or you know, Tennessee
- 46:15could use a team. Portland was another one.
- 46:19I just feel like any of these fits are better than Oakland.
- 46:22At the end of the day, any of these fits, even Vegas with as
- 46:26tumultuous of a relationship as that could end up being,
- 46:29probably is still still a better fit than Oakland.
- 46:32It's just it's it's reached its end.
- 46:36But they have to, they have to figure this out and they have to
- 46:38do it in a way in which the city that's receiving them is
- 46:44actually like on board with it. And I think it goes back to your
- 46:46point of selling the team, because I I'm sure if I'm a
- 46:50city, I'm not wanting A-Team like you said, that's just going
- 46:52to we continued garbage. It's weird that you have cities
- 46:57that are like, hey, we'll take you and you're just, you're not,
- 47:00you're not. It's not getting approved.
- 47:03They're passed along. It's like Vegas.
- 47:06Yeah, I mean Fish. I don't know.
- 47:09I don't know the guy from Adam, but it seems like Fisher is
- 47:12looking for the ultimate cash grab here.
- 47:14He's going all Vegas. Sign me up and.
- 47:19That's just he think he sells the second the the city says yes
- 47:23and just has that as like a a bargaining chip, basically.
- 47:33Yeah, 'cause I mean, as it stands right now, you're getting
- 47:37Jack for this team. So like, yeah, spruce it up a
- 47:42little bit, do some, do some housekeeping, yeah, get the
- 47:47stock up a little bit and then jump ship.
- 47:50Just no, don't even jump. Don't even bother going anywhere
- 47:53else. Don't bother acquiring another
- 47:54team or going even to another sport.
- 47:57Just go, just retire, be done. Because you are clearly not fit
- 48:03to do this type of work. So go, go wherever you're going
- 48:08to go. Hit the slots in Vegas, but stay
- 48:12away from the baseball field. That's all I got to say.
- 48:15Close the book here. Just a few items Billy Eppler
- 48:21placed on the ineligible lists for violation of IL rules, which
- 48:25I think is hilarious because. I think every team does this.
- 48:28What team isn't doing this? The Phantom IL has been a thing.
- 48:34It's going to continue to be a thing.
- 48:35But I guess we're just using oh Billy as the scapegoat here,
- 48:39because. Because they're not in it for
- 48:412024. That's true.
- 48:44Everyone knows, Self admitted. Ray's extend Kevin Cash, a move
- 48:52that Nate has seen coming down the pipe for years.
- 48:59Big Kevin Cash guy he is. Was it coming into this year
- 49:06that you predicted that Cash would be gone after this year, I
- 49:10think, or this past 2023? I should say, yeah.
- 49:13I'll take this episode last year, yeah.
- 49:18So. There's gonna be 1 hot take
- 49:20that's just it's always nails. And then there's one hot take
- 49:22where you can probably put your money on the opposite happening.
- 49:27That's how I roll, baby. That's how I do it.
- 49:29That's fair. You play in the odds.
- 49:30I like it. Yeah.
- 49:31Yeah, Flip of the coin when it comes.
- 49:33To name that was a + 3500 move. I put some money on it.
- 49:37It didn't pay. Now that's OK.
- 49:43Whatever. It was admirable.
- 49:45It was admirable. I can do that.
- 49:49Red Sox will have a Netflix series made after their 2024
- 49:54campaign, or surrounding their 2024 campaign to be released in
- 50:012025. It It's either going to go one
- 50:05or two ways. This is going to be the the
- 50:08magical of magical runs, or it's going to be an entire series of
- 50:15the most depressing, heated, argumentative, toxic baseball
- 50:22you've ever seen. That's, yeah, that's really
- 50:26where we're at. It's there's not going to be
- 50:28much of A middle ground. It's going to be one of those
- 50:30two things, just a wild selection for your first team to
- 50:38do that as. Yeah, as far as.
- 50:40Netflix goes support the decision.
- 50:43My question, the selection of team I will still watch.
- 50:51I think this is great. I think it's fantastic for the
- 50:55game of baseball. I think this is exactly what
- 50:58we've been asking for for a long time.
- 51:00You're seeing these behind the scenes.
- 51:02We've seen it, you know, Hard Knocks and stuff for football
- 51:04for years, decades now you're starting to just see other
- 51:07sports get into it. So with full swing and getting
- 51:11you know the behind the scenes in in golf, the F1 series and
- 51:14behind the scenes in that, NASCAR I think has a similar one
- 51:19that's you're getting these behind the scenes, raw
- 51:23documentary style things. I'm a huge fan of them.
- 51:26I love them. I'm excited for it.
- 51:31I think it is interesting to choose A-Team.
- 51:33That's not in a great position right now, but but either way I
- 51:40I I think it's good for baseball.
- 51:42I mean it's it's very possible that that's they knew that going
- 51:45into it they they knew like this is gonna be a dumps this is
- 51:49gonna be a dumpster fire let's let's get it on camera.
- 51:52Because the other thing too, is the Red Sox aren't gonna have
- 51:54final say over the the the content that goes into this.
- 52:00Like, they're not gonna if if there's a if there are Gatorade
- 52:05coolers thrown in the clubhouse after a random June game where
- 52:10the Yankees blow em out 63 to 2. The Red Sox can't be like, yeah,
- 52:15we need to, we need to take that out.
- 52:17Netflix. Like, go kick rocks.
- 52:21Also, find a smaller clubhouse for a Netflix crew to come in
- 52:24with cameras. How?
- 52:28Where Where you gonna? You'd have three people that are
- 52:30allowed to work this the entire documentary, 'cause there's no
- 52:33room for anyone else. A lot of questionable decisions
- 52:35went into this. And Speaking of the Red Sox
- 52:39closing or closing the book segment here, Corey Kluber,
- 52:43Opening Day starter for the 2023 Red Sox, is calling it a career
- 52:48that's got like, I can't imagine that scenario happening too many
- 52:52times, right? The guy is your Opening Day
- 52:55starter and then at the end of the season retires.
- 52:58That's the state of the Red Sox. That's what that's that's the
- 53:02kind of news that that we're making.
- 53:04That's where we're at. Come on in.
- 53:08The water's fine. Yeah, Nice career, though.
- 53:11Nice career. Corey Kluber, I The the very
- 53:14good, very good stretch of being a top five pitcher in baseball
- 53:19for two or three years. I just he didn't age very well
- 53:25and he didn't recreate his craft in any way, but just a tough
- 53:33last three or four years of a career.
- 53:36But during his peak during his prime, it'd be his fun baseball
- 53:39to watch those the Cy Young Cleveland days.
- 53:45Good, very good baseball. I think he probably would have
- 53:49gotten more love if if the Indians at that time were
- 53:51better, if they just got over the hump a little bit more.
- 53:58There's a lot of people on social media outing themselves
- 54:02in regards to how or the amount of baseball that they watch or
- 54:07that they're aware of if they if it was before their time.
- 54:10Because I think it was Heyman put out a tweet and he he made
- 54:15reference to him as clue bot and all the people in the replies
- 54:18are going. You're not just going for a typo
- 54:22again. Yeah, there's you going.
- 54:24We're not just going to pretend like you didn't just say Clue
- 54:27bot. And then they put like, the
- 54:28clown emojis and like the crying, laughing emojis and I'm
- 54:32like, oh boy, and credit credit to the people that came to the
- 54:36defensive Heyman. They're like.
- 54:39The baseball fans. You.
- 54:40You. Do know that's like his
- 54:43nickname. They were.
- 54:43Screenshot in the Baseball Reference bio section and all
- 54:49these people just really outing themselves as to how little they
- 54:52know about some of these guys. But you mentioned a great
- 54:56career. It must must have been nice.
- 54:58I didn't really get to witness much of it.
- 54:59I I mean, we got the, we got the crumbs of it in regards to you
- 55:06got. A no hitter with the Yankees,
- 55:07so. Swansong.
- 55:09Take that. Well, no, I'm as, as you know,
- 55:13I'm not a Yankees guy. So I'm I'm talking like first
- 55:15hand. Yeah, you you got real the real
- 55:19tough end there. We got the true crumbs.
- 55:24That about does it for closing the book.
- 55:26Wanted to wrap up here with our with continuing our Unbreakables
- 55:31record mini series here today. We've got Hack Wilson, mentioned
- 55:40him on the last episode, alluded to it a little bit the most RBI
- 55:45in a season all the time. I think I I may have said it on
- 55:54here, but do you remember? Do you do you do you know how
- 55:56many it was? I don't, I want to say like 183,
- 56:01but I feel like that's low. 191 And so I've got some career
- 56:08numbers here for you, but I got a little bit of a story, Tom, I
- 56:11I I was reading in my research, I read this article from the
- 56:15Guardian that I just had to share because what year was
- 56:20this? This would have been 1930.
- 56:24OK. 1930, so career Hall of Famer.
- 56:28He was voted in by the Veterans Committee in 1979.
- 56:32I believe he passed away in like the 40s.
- 56:34So it was it was a while before he he got the honor.
- 56:40It was an MVP. Played twelve seasons,
- 56:42accumulated a career WAR of 38.7.
- 56:45Had 1461 hits, 244 home runs. He hit three O 7, had 1063 RB is
- 56:53had an OPS of 940 and an OPS plus of 144.
- 56:59So little bit of a understand in in acquiring these numbers, but
- 57:07rather impactful. But let me just read this bit
- 57:11from the Guardian. Bear with me it I I couldn't
- 57:16stop reading as I was reading this this article.
- 57:20Born in Pennsylvania steel country, his parents were
- 57:23Alcoholics and Hack followed suit.
- 57:24He always insisted he never took to the field while drunk while
- 57:28hungover. That was a different matter.
- 57:31I never took a drink in my life on the day of a game after 11:00
- 57:35in the morning, he once said for Clifton Blue, Parker, author of
- 57:39a fine biography of Wilson, fouled the way he was, quote the
- 57:43roaring 20s epitome of a baseball player primed for an
- 57:47age of American excess. Hack's mother died from a burst
- 57:50of Pennix when he was 7. He left school at age 16 and
- 57:55worked 12 hour days at a print works, then signed for the minor
- 57:59league Martinsburg Blue Sox in West Virginia, suffered a broken
- 58:03leg on the opening day of his first professional season, which
- 58:06prompted a move from catcher to the outfield.
- 58:08After his recovery, Wilson worked as a label stitcher in a
- 58:11stock factory in the offseason and married at 23 to Virginia
- 58:17Riddleberger, A divorcee or divorcee for of 12 years, his
- 58:22senior. So after the old, after the
- 58:25older woman hack, hack, Hack likes I'm old, Wilson made his
- 58:32Major League debut with the New York Giants in 1923, acquired
- 58:36his moniker. His real name was Lewis, and
- 58:38drew comparisons with a slugger across town named Babe Ruth in
- 58:42appearance, batting prowess and relish for extracurricular
- 58:45activities. His unusual physique fascinated
- 58:48contemporary sports writers, while more recent analysts have
- 58:52speculated that it was caused by fetal alcohol syndrome.
- 58:56Hack was only 5 feet 6 inches tall, but heavy, with a large
- 59:00head, tiny feet, and small arms and legs.
- 59:03The baseball writer Lee Allen wrote in 1961 that Wilson was a
- 59:07comic figure, a pudgy Goliath, a gorilla of a man with a red face
- 59:12who looked like a sawed off Babe Ruth.
- 59:15Acquired by the Cubs in the late in late 1925, he flourished in
- 59:19the bedlam of Prohibition era Chicago, where Parker wrote he
- 59:23was, quote on friendly terms with Al Capone.
- 59:27He was once arrested when police raided A Speakeasy.
- 59:30The story goes that he tried to escape via a window but got
- 59:33stuck halfway through. Standing in a line a few days
- 59:37later, Parker recounted, he got into a shoving match with two
- 59:40policemen charged with disorderly conduct.
- 59:42He was taken to the police station where the captain, a
- 59:45baseball fan, dropped the charges and actually ordered the
- 59:48officers to apologize. Almost done here.
- 59:52An early scouting report is said to have described Hack as
- 59:55possessing, quote homicidal tendencies.
- 59:57Parker wrote that Wilson once drunkenly trashed a hotel room
- 1:00:00in Boston and shoved an umpire. He punched 1 Cincinnati Reds
- 1:00:04pitcher during a game and knocked out another at a train
- 1:00:07station later that night. The Chicago Tribune reported
- 1:00:10that during a game at Wrigley Field in 1928, Wilson lunged
- 1:00:14into the stands and choked the hell quote.
- 1:00:16Choked the hell out of a Heckler.
- 1:00:18Wilson was fined $100 by the National League and the Fan, a
- 1:00:22milkman, sued Hack and the Cubs for $50,000.
- 1:00:28I'm just gonna let that let that sink in for a little bit.
- 1:00:31Just that was a lot to process. The amount of Nuggets in there.
- 1:00:39I mean, what a story time Hack Wilson I I'm glad I found.
- 1:00:45I came across this article because I had no idea.
- 1:00:48I was like, wow, 191 RB is in the season.
- 1:00:50That's impressive good for Hack. Well, let's do a little bit of a
- 1:00:55deep dive into Hack's life and we find out that Hack.
- 1:00:59And this man made his way into the Hall of Fame.
- 1:01:02I I think the the voters came across this article and we're
- 1:01:06like vote em in, vote em in, forget the numbers.
- 1:01:12Bro, what did I what did I just hear?
- 1:01:17It's it's a heck of a it's a heck of a piece.
- 1:01:20Hold on Hack Wilson. If you guys wanna read it, just
- 1:01:25type in. Hack Will.
- 1:01:26Yeah, just type in Hack Wilson, The Guardian.
- 1:01:28And it should be the top article that comes up.
- 1:01:30Just a an insane read. So we have guys that that may be
- 1:01:38a little too demonstrative with their political views, that
- 1:01:43can't get into the hall, but this guy gets in.
- 1:01:48This man wreaked havoc. Goodness.
- 1:01:55I mean he was on friendly terms with Al Capone and we're going
- 1:01:58to talk about a character clause.
- 1:02:02I mean come on man. Always with a murderer and a
- 1:02:06just and a thief. Just a continued just continued
- 1:02:11proof that the the committee the Hall of Fame as a whole is
- 1:02:17becoming more and more of a joke as we come across information
- 1:02:20like this. Oh, Hack 191 RB is.
- 1:02:27As with a lot of these records that we've we've researched,
- 1:02:33there was a little bit of Gray area in terms of the correct
- 1:02:36number that was attributed to him.
- 1:02:39It said he was originally credited with 190, but a it says
- 1:02:44a quote rather tardy review determined that an RBI should
- 1:02:48have gone to Hack. It was actually wrongly given at
- 1:02:51the time to a teammate and his tally was boosted to 191 in
- 1:02:541999. Yeah, I mean, I I want to know
- 1:02:59what the scorekeepers were doing back then.
- 1:03:02I want to know how many errors were listed as hits.
- 1:03:06That's what I'm saying, man. The record books are not.
- 1:03:09When the, you know, like when did the rule come of like a
- 1:03:13double play doesn't count as an RBI, You know what I'm saying?
- 1:03:16Like I I just, I feel like there's a lot of things that
- 1:03:19maybe adjusted either way. I mean, even if we're off a
- 1:03:23little bit, he's probably still in the in like the 170 range,
- 1:03:28which is absurd. But yeah, dude, there's there's
- 1:03:32a lot of Gray area with some of these stats that's like it's not
- 1:03:35just a home run these this, the RBI has been adjusted multiple
- 1:03:39times. So interesting.
- 1:03:44Not to mention, wasn't it? Wasn't it the what was that rule
- 1:03:49the the ground rule? Double S counted as home runs or
- 1:03:52something? Or like if the ball bounced over
- 1:03:54the fence, it was a home run or back on Babe the Babe's Day.
- 1:03:58Something weird like that. So that, I mean that's kind of
- 1:04:01what we're working with here. To put it into perspective, Hank
- 1:04:04Aaron, the all time leader in RB is averaged just under 100 for
- 1:04:08his career. His highest single season total
- 1:04:10was 130. Two.
- 1:04:14I remember when we were kids we watched a lot of one 30s and one
- 1:04:1840s like a good amount of time and the MVP was always in the
- 1:04:23above. Like 1/21/90 is different.
- 1:04:28Only nine times in the entire history of baseball has someone
- 1:04:31finished a season with 170 or more, and that hasn't happened
- 1:04:34since 193821 times we've seen 160 RB is.
- 1:04:39That hasn't happened. Or no, that's only happened
- 1:04:42twice since the 1930s. A 150 RB is.
- 1:04:48I've only happened an additional 7 times since the 1940s.
- 1:04:54But here's the thing though, if you look at his 1930s season,
- 1:04:59you probably assume like, oh, a guy had like 112 home runs or
- 1:05:02something. He had 56.
- 1:05:06It's pretty good for a stubby little guy.
- 1:05:09Wow, that random number that I threw out I think is exactly
- 1:05:11twice the number he actually had, right?
- 1:05:1356 * 212. Crazy.
- 1:05:16Look at that. Good for you.
- 1:05:18Insane. He, he hit 35656 home runs, 208
- 1:05:25hits and 100 and five walks. So it's not like he's just
- 1:05:30putting up these numbers aside from the RBI, of course.
- 1:05:32It's not like he's putting up these numbers that are just
- 1:05:36gaudy and unattainable, like that's that's very doable.
- 1:05:43I mean, that's AMVP season for sure.
- 1:05:45But I mean those numbers individually are very
- 1:05:48attainable. But it's it's a matter, as we've
- 1:05:53acknowledged, it's a matter of who he has in front of him.
- 1:05:57And he from all accounts had guys that, yeah, right here it
- 1:06:03says the guy setting the table for for Hack Kiki Coiler, Woody
- 1:06:12English and Riggs Stevenson for sure.
- 1:06:16Yeah, of course. They all had OB PS of over 430.
- 1:06:25OK. So that right there is your
- 1:06:29explanation this as to how he reached 100 and what was it 191?
- 1:06:36Bro, the description of this man was entirely just over the top.
- 1:06:41I looked up. I'm looking at pictures right
- 1:06:43now. It's like it's not even that
- 1:06:49bad. Like he he doesn't even look
- 1:06:56that bad. Of I mean, he's a yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:59He's got a big head for sure. I mean he it's a very unique
- 1:07:03build. I'll I'll give him that.
- 1:07:04He was only 5-6 and to read through the quote again he was
- 1:07:09described as quote a pudgy Goliath, a gorilla of a man with
- 1:07:13a red face who looked like a sawed off Babe Ruth.
- 1:07:19That's insane. You're not saying that to his
- 1:07:21face when he's alive. That's what I'm.
- 1:07:22Saying to call him this man will.
- 1:07:26Break you a sawed off babe? Yeah, look up, pictures a sawed
- 1:07:31off Babe Ruth. You're not saying that right
- 1:07:33There is the 1930s edition of a keyboard Warrior.
- 1:07:38Like you're not saying that to his face.
- 1:07:41No. That writer back in 1930 had a
- 1:07:44little bit a little bit of Twitter fingers going on like
- 1:07:47chill. Yeah, being stuck in a window
- 1:07:50running from the cops is just a sprinkle of a detail on that.
- 1:07:56That that biography. That's absurd.
- 1:08:00This whole thing, this man is just different.
- 1:08:03I've never, I've never heard of anything like this.
- 1:08:07Then why? Why have we not seen a movie?
- 1:08:10That's what I want to know. And why is Danny DeVito playing
- 1:08:13him? I.
- 1:08:14Need to find a book on this guy, Dude.
- 1:08:17I read this article and I was like, I just want to.
- 1:08:20I don't even want to record the episode.
- 1:08:22I just want to go read about Hack Wilson's life.
- 1:08:25I mean that that those pair, those few paragraphs already,
- 1:08:28that's like a full on. You're right.
- 1:08:30That's a full on movie script. Yeah, well, that needs to
- 1:08:34happen. A whole lot to work with.
- 1:08:37Let's get Danny DeVito. Wife.
- 1:08:40Let's get Yeah, Mary's a cougar. Let's get Danny DeVito on the
- 1:08:43horn. Let's get this.
- 1:08:45Let's get this in the works. That's all I got.
- 1:08:49That was that was fun. That's all I got.
- 1:08:51Unless you got anything else for the people.
- 1:08:53I don't got nothing. Heck of a day for the three O
- 1:08:57change up. On Friday we released the change
- 1:09:00up I think like Thursday and then Friday night, for those who
- 1:09:05aren't familiar, we dropped the change up and it was on fast
- 1:09:09casual dining. And in the episode we'd
- 1:09:12referenced, how Five Guys was just a A never misses and how
- 1:09:18Panera is like overpriced hospital food.
- 1:09:21And where do we end up collectively on Friday night
- 1:09:25with our respective significant others?
- 1:09:28Knight ends up at Panera. I end up at Five Guys.
- 1:09:32I was forced into mine. Yeah, I recommended mine.
- 1:09:36Just a a real, real tough night. I got the I we talked about.
- 1:09:42I told her. I was like, you know, we just
- 1:09:44talked about this. Kyle and Meredith went to five
- 1:09:47guys and I got the pity. Oh, I guess we can go there.
- 1:09:51I'm like, no, no. And now did you say?
- 1:09:55Did you tell her that when you were already at Panera?
- 1:09:58We were on the way. Yeah.
- 1:10:00No, you gotta drive through one. That's like right down the
- 1:10:02street. She.
- 1:10:03Was gotta say that before you leave.
- 1:10:05I know, but I just. I didn't feel.
- 1:10:06I didn't have the energy. And she wanted bread, that's
- 1:10:09all. She's just like, I just need
- 1:10:11bread and I'm like, where you get it.
- 1:10:13We're going to the right place. I had this.
- 1:10:16I, and I will be honest, it was expensive.
- 1:10:19Of course I didn't hate it. I didn't hate it.
- 1:10:24The broccoli cheddar soup was decent.
- 1:10:26The sandwich that I got decent, Yeah.
- 1:10:30But for two of us to eat there for $36 or whatever is insane.
- 1:10:35Insane. Another.
- 1:10:39Note on Price is dude, I went to Tropical Smoothie, another place
- 1:10:43we briefly mentioned on the fast food.
- 1:10:46Working your way down the. List hit me up with a birthday
- 1:10:48smoothie and I'm like my birthday's in October.
- 1:10:52Don't question you. I didn't question it.
- 1:10:54I showed up and dude, the smoothies there are insane.
- 1:10:59It was 75750 for a smoothie. Yeah, yeah, I I couldn't do it.
- 1:11:13I couldn't do it. I mean, it's free.
- 1:11:16So I did it. But you did.
- 1:11:17If I'm. If I'm paying, I'm not.
- 1:11:19I'm. I'm not doing that.
- 1:11:20I'm sorry. Can't do it.
- 1:11:22Yeah. All right.
- 1:11:23Let's get out of here. That's all I got.
- 1:11:25We'll see you guys next week. Adios, don't go chasing
- 1:11:32curveballs. We'll be honest, always looking
- 1:11:35forward to talking more baseball with you guys soon.
- 1:11:37Until next time, stay filthy.
