I know how to say 'today is Monday' from before, so can we do 'today is January'? Lucas: Absolutely. And we'll start with the first three months of the Ethiopian calendar. Ready? Luna: Ready! Lucas: Okay, first month: January. In Amharic, it's ጥር. Luna: ጥር? Lucas: Yes! Say it with me: ጥር. Luna: ጥር. That sounds like 'tir'. Lucas: Exactly. ጥር. Now, second month: February is የካቲት. Luna: የካቲት. That's a long one. yekatit? Lucas: Perfect. የካቲት. And third month: March is መጋቢት. Luna: መጋቢት. Megabit? That sounds like a computer unit! Lucas: Exactly the same spelling, but here it's a month. መጋቢት. Now, let's put them into sentences. 'Today is January.' In Amharic: ዛሬ ጥር ነው. Luna: ዛሬ ጥር ነው. Zare Tir new? Lucas: Yes! ዛሬ means 'today', ጥር is 'January', ነው is 'is'. So 'today is January'. Luna: Okay, so if I want to say 'today is February', it's ዛሬ የካቲት ነው? Lucas: You got it! ዛሬ የካቲት ነው. Luna: And 'today is March' is ዛሬ መጋቢት ነው. Lucas: Nailed it. Now let's try a sentence about order. 'After February comes March.' In Amharic: የካቲት በኋላ መጋቢት ነው. Luna: Woah, that's longer. የካቲት በኋላ መጋቢት ነው. So በኋላ means 'after'? Lucas: Exactly. So literally: ' February after March is.' But it means 'after February comes March'.
