- 0:00Meet me in First Kings chapter one, where we left off, verse
- 0:0511, First Kings one, verse 11. And as returning there, allow me
- 0:10to give you a brief recap from the 1st 11 verses of this
- 0:13chapter. David, we are told, is very old
- 0:17in age, so old and he is ready to depart from this world.
- 0:22One of David's sons by the name of Adenija sees this as a great
- 0:26opportunity to seize the throne for himself.
- 0:29Though he was not the king chosen to succeed his father,
- 0:34his pride was so inflated, his ego was so great that he thought
- 0:38that he can actually thwart the purpose of God, and so he
- 0:41attempts to overthrow the purpose of God for the people of
- 0:46Israel, which is a very sad thing for Adenija to do.
- 0:51Does anybody know what the name Adenija means?
- 0:55You can probably guess based on his name if you understand basic
- 0:57Hebrew words. Adonai ya.
- 1:01Adonai ya. Any guess?
- 1:06No more specific Daniel, you're not allowed to answer.
- 1:14Did you hear it? The Lord is Jehovah or my Lord
- 1:19is Jehovah. That is what David named his son
- 1:25telling me and you that he had great hopes for Adonaija.
- 1:28Did he not that he would live to serve God, honor God, reflect
- 1:33the character of God, and instead Adonaija resists God,
- 1:40challenges the will of God, exalts himself as king.
- 1:46Which tells me that it doesn't matter what kind of hopes and
- 1:48dreams, as godly as they are, you have for your children.
- 1:53David named him Adonaija. But David didn't do his part as
- 1:55a father to discipline Adonaija. He did not fulfill his role as a
- 2:01father to chastise him, admonish him, rebuke him, correct him,
- 2:06and direct him. And so now we see the maturity
- 2:09of a of a unhinged boy who now is a man who can make adult
- 2:14decisions. And all his life he has never
- 2:16been told no. And so what's going to stop him
- 2:19from saying and from pursuing something that doesn't belong to
- 2:22him? And things seem to be promising
- 2:26for Adenija because he was able to recruit people and two
- 2:30prominent figures. Who are the two prominent
- 2:32figures that Adenija was able to recruit?
- 2:35Job is 1. And the other.
- 2:39Yeah, sorry, the priest. So you have the commander of
- 2:42David's army, and you have one of the chief priests in David's
- 2:45camp now switching their allegiance over to Adenija.
- 2:48There are other key figures who are with him and they are
- 2:51celebrating his self promoting coronation at a legend, verse 9.
- 2:57Sacrifice sheep oxen and fat and cattle by the serpent stone
- 3:00which is beside and Rogle. And he invited all his brothers,
- 3:03the king, sons, and all the royal officials of Judah.
- 3:07But he did not invite Nathan the Prophet or Benaiya or the mighty
- 3:10man or Solomon his brother. This looks pretty promising, and
- 3:15it often does when you and I choose to resist the will of
- 3:19God, oppose God, and to live according to our selfish
- 3:24desires. It would be alive for me to
- 3:28stand here tonight and tell you that there is no pleasure in
- 3:30sin. There is pleasure in sin.
- 3:33But Hebrews 11 is very careful to tell us that that pleasure is
- 3:36fleeting. It's a season of reward, It's a
- 3:39season of promise, but it's very short lived and the reward is
- 3:44not really reward to begin with. Adam and I just plans are going
- 3:48to crash and burn very quickly. And for the rest of this chapter
- 3:54we're going to see how his plans are actually going to be
- 3:57overturned by God's sovereign power and the primary ways
- 4:02through one of David's most faithful friends, Nathan.
- 4:07So let's read what happens now In verse 11 the Nathan said to
- 4:11Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, Have you not heard that Adonija
- 4:16the son of Haggeth has become king, and David our Lord does
- 4:20not know it. Now therefore, come, let me give
- 4:25you advice that you may save your own life and the life of
- 4:28your son Solomon, going out once to King David, and say to him,
- 4:32did you not, my Lord the king, swear to your servant saying,
- 4:35Solomon, your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my
- 4:38throne. Why then is Adam I Jack words?
- 4:50Let's pray. Lord, your word is before us.
- 4:53We are eager to understand your mind and your heart.
- 4:57Give us the grace. Give us the spirit of wisdom and
- 5:02revelation that we may know you and be conformed to your image
- 5:07and walk in greater obedience to your purposes.
- 5:11For our lives. We sincerely pray this together
- 5:13as a church family. In Jesus name we pray.
- 5:17Amen. Nathan.
- 5:20Nathan realizes that Anaija is doing something quite dangerous,
- 5:23something that David and the Kingdom of Israel has seen
- 5:26before. And so Nathan reports about this
- 5:29with emergency protocol. And right from verse 11, we have
- 5:34something to learn. Nathan, as a faithful servant of
- 5:37God, teaches us that as also servants of God, it is our duty
- 5:42to expose sin. It's our duty to expose sin.
- 5:47It's our duty to expose the darkness in the world.
- 5:49It's our duty to expose sin in a brother or sister's life.
- 5:54It's our duty to continually come to the presence of God and
- 5:56allow His Word and His people to expose our sin.
- 5:59But in the case of a community, in the case of let's say in our
- 6:04context the local church, Nathan provides an example that there
- 6:08are times where it is our responsibility to make known
- 6:11things that are probably not known to others who are in
- 6:15danger of not knowing it. Nathan here sees and understands
- 6:21that if Adenide continues in the pattern that he is walking in,
- 6:25there will be a massive disruption in the Kingdom.
- 6:30And understanding the potential consequences of this, Nathan,
- 6:34make sure, and he makes it a priority to bring this news to
- 6:38those who would be at risk if this continues on.
- 6:42And in like manner. As I just said, there are
- 6:46moments and there are circumstances and there's the
- 6:48nature of certain sins that demands us to be vigilant and
- 6:52willing to be uncomfortable to deal with matters before they
- 6:57get really ugly. In my brief time in ministry,
- 7:01I've learned something very quickly that there are problems
- 7:05in the local church. Usually, if not most of the
- 7:09time, if not all the time, it's relational problems, right?
- 7:13And most of those relational problems are very complicated to
- 7:18untangle. They become very knotted.
- 7:20And one of the reason why they become so knotted is because
- 7:23parties involved who are aware of the issue were unwilling to
- 7:30take the stance and expose certain sins, whether that sin
- 7:35be slander, whether that sin be the spread of doctrinal error,
- 7:39whether that sin be strife among parties within the Church.
- 7:44Often times the reason why things get to a place where
- 7:46there is damage, sometimes severe damage, that can cause
- 7:50even trauma and and distress and broken relationships on the long
- 7:54run, is because again, there are some who are unwilling to get
- 7:58uncomfortable and to put themselves out there to say this
- 8:01is wrong. We have to deal with this.
- 8:04Nathan didn't care because Nathan understood that, one, it
- 8:07was his duty and two, that there would be, there would be blood
- 8:10on his hands and other people's hands based on what he
- 8:12understood. And so the way that you and I
- 8:16are going to see peace and protection in our family, in our
- 8:20church family, it's not to be nosy individuals, it's not to
- 8:24sniff out sin in people's lives. But when there is legitimate
- 8:27concern within the church that we take the appropriate steps to
- 8:33cut Satan schemes short. And one of the best ways to do
- 8:37that is that when he attempts to sow discord among the brethren.
- 8:40That you and I surfaced that while it is still in seed form,
- 8:46I was meditating on Nathan's actions here.
- 8:47And there were so many examples that came to mind.
- 8:50And one example that came to mind.
- 8:51Just a brief observation that I would like to bring to your
- 8:53attention, but it it shows how significant that step can make,
- 8:57what kind of what kind of reward and blessing and security it can
- 9:01provide if we are people who honor the culture that Jesus
- 9:04called us to have as a church. And what did he say, Matthew 18?
- 9:07That if a brother sins, you rebuke him, you approach him,
- 9:10and it becomes a community effort to ensure that sin does
- 9:14not have breath to breathe in our midst.
- 9:17That's the culture Jesus wants us to have.
- 9:19One of humble, sincere, broken, loving, confrontation when
- 9:26necessary, exposure of sin when necessary.
- 9:29Did you know the Apostle Paul had his sister?
- 9:34Anybody know that? Anybody know the impossible?
- 9:36Had a sister? Can I show it to you in the
- 9:39scriptures? Go to Acts 23.
- 9:43I love quoting Acts 2311 whenever teaching about the
- 9:48Providence and sovereign will of God for our lives in Acts 2311.
- 9:52This is where Jesus appears to Paul when he was in prison in
- 9:55Jerusalem and was promised. You must also testify about me.
- 9:59Where? Where was Paul supposed to
- 10:02testify at that point? Rome.
- 10:04You're going to Rome, Paul, I assure.
- 10:06You're going to Rome. And immediately after we're told
- 10:08that, we're told that this band of Jews who conspired and came
- 10:13up with a plot to kill Paul. And there was more than 40 who
- 10:17even faceted until it was accomplished.
- 10:20And so they had this whole plot to try to get Paul to, to enter
- 10:24into a certain region, for them to create an ambush and to take
- 10:26his life. And then we're told of an
- 10:29interesting character, somebody who flashes into the scriptures
- 10:32and then disappears just as quickly.
- 10:34It's in verse 16 now. The son of Paul's sister, Paul
- 10:39had his sister, and Paul had a nephew.
- 10:41Now the son of Paul's sister heard of their ambush.
- 10:46So he went and entered the barracks and told Paul, let's
- 10:52look at this from a heavenly perspective.
- 10:54This is an encouragement to you and I, Paul's nephew, unnamed,
- 10:58never to be seen again. Oh, there's so much to say about
- 11:01Paul's nephew, even in this one verse.
- 11:04But from a heavenly perspective, we see that Paul's nephew chose
- 11:08us. God's eyes and ears are
- 11:11everywhere, and if you, like Paul, are serving the Lord, you
- 11:17have nothing to worry about. Even when the enemy is brewing
- 11:20up a scheme against you, God's already ahead of it.
- 11:25He already knows about it, he already sees it, he already
- 11:27considers it, and he already knows what he's going to do
- 11:29about it. You have nothing to fear every
- 11:34waking and sleeping moment of your life.
- 11:36Because what I see here is that in Providence, nobody knows how
- 11:40Paul's nephew heard about this. Nobody knows how he was.
- 11:43It's just Providence. He was at the right place at the
- 11:45right time. He received the news and he
- 11:47brought it to Paul. Paul was able to pass that to
- 11:49the Roman soldiers and they were able to evade a disaster.
- 11:52God's eyes and ears are everywhere for his glory.
- 11:58For your good. But let's look at this from a
- 12:00human standpoint. Paul's nephew here, and
- 12:03understanding what he has seen in this moment felt the urgency
- 12:09to make this problem known and it saved Paul's life.
- 12:15It saved Paul's life. When we are willing to get
- 12:20uncomfortable, to expose and to correct, to bring things to even
- 12:24spiritual authority for the sake of the preservation of the
- 12:27unity, the love and the holiness of God's people, we could be
- 12:31saving so much. I'm telling you you, you don't
- 12:35know how many people I've talked to that are aware of certain
- 12:39things. People committing spiritual
- 12:41suicide. People committing spiritual
- 12:43collateral damage and for fear of I don't know what they're
- 12:46unwilling to step forward and say in the name of Christ, in
- 12:50the name of His Holiness and the name of unity.
- 12:52I have to say something, whether it be stripe, slander, doctrinal
- 12:56error, anything and everything in between.
- 12:59But Nathan here makes that decision, and and it's really
- 13:01the hinge to what we're about to discover.
- 13:03And his wisdom is proven further by this.
- 13:05He comes to Bathsheba, not amazing Nathan, a prophet of
- 13:12God. Knowing what this woman's past
- 13:13was. He's the one who exposed the sin
- 13:16between Bathsheba and David. And here's a man who's still
- 13:20willing to relate to her, to work with her, to care for her.
- 13:24Nathan was more than just a courageous, fearless man of God
- 13:27who exposed sin. He was a man who was also
- 13:30willing to relate to those who have repented of their sin, no
- 13:34matter how grotesque their sin was.
- 13:37What a man of God he he brings in Bathsheet and he says listen,
- 13:41your life is in danger, Your son Solomon's life is in danger.
- 13:43You need to listen to me. You need to go into your
- 13:46husband's chamber. You need to ask him what
- 13:49happened to the plan that you told me about that God had given
- 13:52you. Where is this going?
- 13:55And while you're explaining that I'm going to walk in at the
- 13:58right time and I'm going to confirm, I'm going to confirm
- 14:01your words. Now.
- 14:02Why? Why this scheme?
- 14:05Why this whole plan? Any ideas why?
- 14:08Why didn't Nathan just barge into the chamber and
- 14:11thunderously announced to David? Hey, listen, you're in trouble.
- 14:17You're negligent here. We got to get things into order.
- 14:20Why didn't he just do that? Any idea why?
- 14:25Why work with Bathsheba? This is very good.
- 14:30We're going to get to that in a moment.
- 14:31There's something about David. There's a weakness in David that
- 14:35required this kind of approach. So let's talk about the two
- 14:38things. I think the first thing is
- 14:40David's ignorance. So what are we told here in
- 14:42verse 12, verse 11? Rather David at the end of it.
- 14:46Our Lord does not know it. He's unaware, he's ignorant and
- 14:51so this requires a specific kind of approach, right?
- 14:55We have to come and make this known to him.
- 14:57But more than just his ignorance, there is a weakness.
- 15:01What's David's weakness when it comes to his children?
- 15:03We learned about it last week, verse six of chapter one.
- 15:07What is it? His father had never at any time
- 15:09displeased him being out of Niger by asking why have you
- 15:12done thus? And so David had already proven
- 15:15that he has a history of not willing to confront and
- 15:20discipline his children. More than that, he always seemed
- 15:23to believe the best about his children.
- 15:26He always had that kind of hope and desire, and even if they did
- 15:30wrong, even in in the face of obvious evil and disobedience,
- 15:33he was reluctant to deal with them.
- 15:36Nathan is David Trent. Nathan has seen this throughout
- 15:39the decades, and so he understands that in order for
- 15:43this to be something that David considers, we have to present it
- 15:46with urgency. And so, Bathsheba, you go in and
- 15:49then I'm going to come in and confirm it, and together we're
- 15:52going to bring this to David's attention for him to not be so
- 15:56quick to deny it or downplay it, right.
- 15:59Vividly speaking also in Duran, we were told that through two
- 16:02witnesses, I think is established right?
- 16:05So Nathan comes with this plan. Bathsheba is willing to listen.
- 16:10So Bathsheba does, and let's read it.
- 16:12Here Bathsheba went and verse 15 to the king and his chamber.
- 16:17Now the king was very old, and Abhishek the Shunamite was
- 16:20attending to the king. Bathsheba bowed and paid homage
- 16:23to the king. And the king said, Why do you?
- 16:25What do you desire? She said to my Lord, You swore
- 16:27to your servant by the Lord your God, saying, Solomon, your son
- 16:30shall rain after me, and he shall sit on my throne, And I'll
- 16:33behold that. And I just came, although you,
- 16:35my Lord king, did not do not know it.
- 16:40He has sacrificed oxen, fat and cattle and sheep in abundance,
- 16:42and has invited all the sons of the king.
- 16:44Have you asked the priests? And Job the commander of the
- 16:46army? But Solomon, you're serving.
- 16:48He is not invited. And now, my Lord the king, the
- 16:51eyes of all Israel are on you to tell them who shall sit on the
- 16:54throne of my Lord the king after him.
- 16:56Otherwise it will come to pass. When my Lord the king sleeps
- 16:59with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted
- 17:02offenders. Bathsheba listens.
- 17:04And again, Nathan here, by what he's saying to Bathsheba, is
- 17:08providing us yet more principles of what we should do, what we
- 17:12should do with somebody who is ignorant and through their
- 17:14ignorance or causing problems. And if they are weak, if they
- 17:18are frail, if they do lack courage, if they do lack
- 17:21boldness and stepping out in obedience and dealing with
- 17:23things, what are the I'm reading something okay.
- 17:26What are the three things you that stand out to me?
- 17:29Maybe more or less, but I see that when Nathan instructs
- 17:31Bathsheba, he first tells her to go respectfully.
- 17:35And she does. These are wonderful lessons
- 17:38about how to confront respectfully Bathsheba, verse
- 17:4216, bowed and paying homage to the king.
- 17:45So she comes with the sense of honor.
- 17:48She comes with the sense of respect.
- 17:51But more than respect, she comes carefully and at least with his
- 17:54advice, he he brings the Bathsheba a format.
- 17:58And the format was bring it in the forms of questions.
- 18:02Remember we had her Q&A. Somebody asked how do I?
- 18:04How do I confront with somebody in regarding to their sense?
- 18:07Ask questions, even even with evidence.
- 18:11Give them a chance to come clean.
- 18:13Give them a chance to be honest. Give them a chance to prove
- 18:15their integrity and their repentance.
- 18:17Ask questions. And sometimes when people are in
- 18:20error, we assume that they do things intentionally.
- 18:23And when you come with questions, you might learn that
- 18:25they were doing it really just out of ignorance and foolishness
- 18:29and a lack of understanding, so respectfully, carefully, but
- 18:34also urgently, urgently. The most unloving thing that you
- 18:39and I can do when somebody is clearly in error is to prolong
- 18:43and to delay. Our willingness to confront them
- 18:47because of whatever selfish reason that puts that delay can
- 18:52even cause more harm. Has anybody here ever eaten at a
- 18:54restaurant and you were devouring your lunch?
- 18:57So much so that there was something in your teeth and you
- 18:59went through that whole day fellowship, been going out for
- 19:02ice cream after the fact, All that's come into your car, put
- 19:04down the mirror and realize that there's something in there?
- 19:07Why didn't anybody tell me? Right.
- 19:12Why didn't anybody tell me about the smudge on my face?
- 19:15Isn't it a nice thing when somebody says, hey brother, you
- 19:17got something here. Hey, brother, sister, you got
- 19:20something here. You've done it, haven't you?
- 19:23You've seen it and you've just like, I'm not going to deal with
- 19:25that. Just let them figure it out
- 19:26themselves. There's something about us that
- 19:30we we really, most people are not confrontational and
- 19:33unfortunately that transfers over spiritually.
- 19:36If if I see correction in that way, as as much as that's a
- 19:38simple example, that's a gift. If you come up to me, say
- 19:41something, brother to see your brother.
- 19:43This is this like this. Can you fix it?
- 19:44I say thank you for that. I didn't want to continue in
- 19:47that way. I appreciate it.
- 19:48I look silly. I look wrong.
- 19:49I look like I didn't take care of myself.
- 19:51I look like I don't care about my hygiene.
- 19:52I appreciate that. Thank you.
- 19:54Well, take correction the same way.
- 19:57It's a gift. It's a gift.
- 20:00Thank you for that. I didn't see.
- 20:01I didn't know. My attitude was.
- 20:02I didn't know. I didn't know I was.
- 20:04That's how I came off when I say certain things.
- 20:05Thank you for that. Don't get all uptight.
- 20:08And if they love you, if they're in Christ, and bless them for
- 20:11that, respectfully, carefully, urgently.
- 20:15Bathsheba tries to obey. She tries to do it the way that
- 20:19she was instructed to do it. And so she comes to her husband,
- 20:23and she tells him with warning in verse 20.
- 20:27Now, my Lord the king, the eyes of all Israel on you to tell
- 20:30them who shall sit on the throne of my Lord the king after him.
- 20:33Otherwise it will come to pass. When my Lord the king sleeps
- 20:35with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted
- 20:39offenders. Like, listen, if you don't take
- 20:41this seriously, people will die. I will die.
- 20:46Your son Solomon will die. Do you understand the
- 20:49repercussions? Do you see how serious your
- 20:51delay is? When God wants to spring us into
- 20:56action, when we are in that place of whether that be
- 20:58weakness or hesitation or ignorance, He will often often
- 21:03use how we use Nathan, a messenger of the word.
- 21:07That's his primary means through sessions like this, where God's
- 21:10worth is being brought forth. And pray that the preachers of
- 21:14this place and preachers across this land are men who are filled
- 21:17with the Holy Spirit. So they don't just give nice
- 21:20lessons, but they speak with power and insight and
- 21:24sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, so they can actually speak into
- 21:27people's lives through the word of God.
- 21:28That's how the Lord speaks to us, to stir us, right?
- 21:32But that's not the only way the Lord can uproot us from a a
- 21:34place of concern to a place of His desired will and purpose.
- 21:38God has many means, and He is so acquainted with you and I that
- 21:42He knows how to bring us where He needs to bring us.
- 21:45One of my favorite examples of that truth, which I praise God
- 21:48for, is the early church in the book of Acts.
- 21:52God gave clear directions of their evangelistic outreach of
- 21:56the regions they were to cover, and that's found in Acts 18.
- 22:00You're very familiar with that, right?
- 22:01What are we told in Acts 18? Where were they supposed to
- 22:03start with the gospel? Jerusalem.
- 22:08And then where? Judea.
- 22:10Very good. And then where very good.
- 22:12And then the ends of the earth. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria.
- 22:19The ends of the earth? That's what the Lord said for
- 22:24the first seven chapters. Where were they?
- 22:30Jerusalem. They made no progress to the
- 22:33outside regions. They stayed in Jerusalem, for
- 22:36whatever reason, there was some form of stagnation.
- 22:40What did the Lord do to get them to Judea and Samaria?
- 22:44So we love Acts 18. Go to Acts 81 and you'll see how
- 22:48God brought them from where they were staying to where they
- 22:51needed to be. And just look at the ways of
- 22:54God. Look at the means of God.
- 22:56Look at the Providence of God, and that it caused your heart to
- 22:59rejoice. He didn't send another Angel.
- 23:02He didn't make his voice from Acts 18 be heard again in the
- 23:04churches. He does this in Acts 81.
- 23:08In Acts 81, we're told, and Saul approved of his execution.
- 23:11And there arose on that day a great not just persecution, a
- 23:15great persecution against the church in Jerusalem.
- 23:19And they were all scattered throughout the regions of where
- 23:23Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
- 23:29How many? How am I going to get this
- 23:31church, my church, to get to Judea and Samaria?
- 23:33Ah, persecution. Not a prophet, not a messenger.
- 23:41Persecution. You want God to lead your life
- 23:45in mine, huh? Very strange, the way he leads
- 23:49us. Very strange the way he brings
- 23:51us from one place to the next. So God wants you to get
- 23:55somewhere. And what does he do?
- 23:56It's not a promotion. You get fired.
- 23:59What's this all about? And how many scenarios can we
- 24:04give where it seems to be a negative?
- 24:06It seems to be a resistance. It seems to be a challenge.
- 24:09When in fact it's the doorway. It's the doorway.
- 24:15And so God knows how to get your attention, especially if you
- 24:19didn't hear Him after the 1st 10 sermons after the 15 Bible
- 24:24studies to move you. Isn't it a wonderful thing to be
- 24:28in the will of God? Isn't it a wonderful thing to be
- 24:30a child of God? He patiently knows how to lead
- 24:33us sometimes, even if it's there's some bruises that need
- 24:36to come with it ultimately so that we can be conformed to His
- 24:40will. All things work together for the
- 24:42good of those who are called according to His purpose.
- 24:44All things. And so here's David.
- 24:47He has his world shook, so to speak, and he has to deal with
- 24:51this. And So what happens, Verse 22,
- 24:55while she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the
- 24:57prophet came in right according to plan.
- 25:00And they told the king here is Nathan the prophet.
- 25:03And when he came in before the king, he bowed before the king
- 25:06with his face to the ground. Let me pause and just say this.
- 25:09Earlier we praised Nathan for being a person, a prophet,
- 25:12willing to care for and love someone like Bathsheba of all
- 25:17people. David, right?
- 25:19But I also see something praiseworthy of David here is
- 25:23David still near the end of his life, clinging to Nathan as a
- 25:27friend, having his life open to a friend like Nathan still.
- 25:31Do you know why that's significant?
- 25:32If you remember when we were introduced to Nathan, we studied
- 25:35how every mention of Nathan in connection to David, every
- 25:41mention of David and Nathan together, Nathan is giving David
- 25:44some kind of direction. Second Samuel Chapter 7, when
- 25:49when David wanted to build a temple.
- 25:52Second Samuel chapter 12 when David was in sin and Nathan
- 25:56rebukes him. And now we see him here in First
- 25:59Kings near the end of his life. He's telling him what to do.
- 26:03That's a real friend. That's someone that you should
- 26:06have in your life. I hope you have a person in your
- 26:08life that is loving enough to speak into your life, even if it
- 26:13cuts you at 1st. That draws you closer to the
- 26:17will of God, not away from the will of God.
- 26:20I hope you have someone like that, that whenever you hang out
- 26:22with them, you want to be godlier.
- 26:25Whenever you hang out with them, Do you have anybody like that?
- 26:27Whenever you talk to me, like, man, I want to read my Bible
- 26:29now. I have friends like that.
- 26:31It's like I don't know my Bible. I didn't see it that I got to go
- 26:33back and read or or somebody's just that person makes me want
- 26:38to pray. A person wants me to be, makes
- 26:40me want to be more holy, more committed, more zealous.
- 26:44Ask God for that kind of a friend.
- 26:45And when you have that kind of, and if you do have that kind of
- 26:48a friend, if you do have that kind of a church, don't take it
- 26:51for granted. Thank God for that.
- 26:54Praise God for that. David made a willful choice.
- 26:59He had the authority to kill him if he wanted to.
- 27:01He was the king. Prophets have been slain before
- 27:04for standing up against disobedient kings.
- 27:07But this king says you're my friend.
- 27:09In fact, one of David's children was named Nathan.
- 27:11I wonder if he named them after his friend.
- 27:16And there's evidence here that perhaps David did praise God for
- 27:19Nathan in some way. Because look here.
- 27:21So Nathan says. Now let's read it.
- 27:23There's a lot of verses, by the way, he says here, verse 24.
- 27:29Nathan said, My Lord the king, have you said I don't?
- 27:31I just shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne free
- 27:34has gone down this day. And I sacrifice oxen fattened
- 27:37cattle and sheep and abundance, and has invited all the King's
- 27:39sons the commanders of the army, and have you after the priest.
- 27:41And behold they're eating and drinking before him.
- 27:43And saying, Long live king out of Nyjah.
- 27:47But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Bennaya the son
- 27:50of Jehodia and your servant, solemn he is not invited.
- 27:53Has this thing being brought about my Lord by my Lord the
- 27:57king and you have not told your servants who should sit on the
- 27:59throne of my Lord the king after him?
- 28:01You see the attitude. Hey, David, King did you did
- 28:06something change And we're not not.
- 28:07He didn't point his finger. The way is confronting so much
- 28:11wisdom. Look what David does.
- 28:14Then King David answered call Bathsheba to me.
- 28:16So she came into the King's presence and stood before the
- 28:19King. And the king swore saying, As
- 28:23the Lord lives, who has redeemed my soul out of every adversity,
- 28:29as I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel, saying,
- 28:31Solomon, your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my
- 28:33throne in my place. Even so will I do this day.
- 28:39Notice the explosive praise before the promise that Solomon
- 28:43will succeed him. Look at this beautiful
- 28:46declaration as the Lord lives who has redeemed my soul out of
- 28:51every adversity. David has gone through a lot of
- 28:56adversity, has he? Not a lot, whether that be
- 28:59foreign armies or internal betrayals and strife, his
- 29:04fatherinlaw, his son, other people from different tribes.
- 29:09This man went through a series of adversities, and yet at this
- 29:13time he pauses. He lifts his heart to heaven,
- 29:17and he said the Lord. The Lord redeemed my soul out of
- 29:21all of them. Why is he saying this?
- 29:25Why is he saying this here? It seems out of place.
- 29:27It just seems kind of random. It's noble.
- 29:28It's it's, it's beautiful. But why is he saying this?
- 29:30Here's why I believe he's saying this.
- 29:32I believe he is saying this because he's not just reflecting
- 29:34on what the Lord has done. He's realizing in this moment
- 29:37that the Lord is doing what he has always done by delivering me
- 29:40yet from another adversity. Do you see what I'm saying?
- 29:44David is praising God for the deliverances that he has known
- 29:48because in this very moment he is being delivered.
- 29:51Because through Nathan the Prophet, something is made aware
- 29:54to him out of Nyjah's wicked plan to try to overthrow his
- 29:57throne. And he goes, oh God, you have
- 30:01delivered me from all these adversities even now to this
- 30:04last moment of my life. What?
- 30:06What's the lesson? God is faithful.
- 30:08God is faithful. I hope you and I will live for
- 30:16the glory of God long enough for the rest of your life, for you
- 30:20and I to be able to say the same thing David says here.
- 30:24He has redeemed my soul out of every adverse.
- 30:26Just because God is God in your life, just because he's your
- 30:29shepherd, doesn't mean you're not going to go through
- 30:30adversities. You're going to go through them,
- 30:32but he will bring you out of them.
- 30:34That's the difference. But a lot of people's theology
- 30:37is I'm never going to be touched.
- 30:39I'm never going to be visited. I'm never going to know harm.
- 30:41I'm never going to go to the heat of the fire.
- 30:42I'm never going to know the rising waters.
- 30:43I'm just going to just just float through this life.
- 30:46That's not what the Lord says out of How are you going to know
- 30:51God's faith in this until you have a problem?
- 30:53How are you going to know God's miracle power unless you stand
- 30:55before Red Sea? How?
- 30:58Be careful what you're asking for, Lord, show me your wisdom.
- 31:01Lord, show me your power. Lord, show me your mic.
- 31:03All right, well, here's the situation that requires it.
- 31:08But David could say confidently, he could say to something you
- 31:11and I could say at the end of it, he's saying something that
- 31:14you can believe now and you can, you can lock it in your heart.
- 31:17He will deliver me out of every adversity.
- 31:20He will. Do you want to know the New
- 31:21Testament equivalent to David's declaration here?
- 31:24It was through the lips of the Apostle Paul and Second Timothy
- 31:26418 Look what Second Timothy 418 is.
- 31:29This is a powerful prompt. This is a powerful thing for you
- 31:32and I to be able to say over and over again, especially as you're
- 31:36living for the glory of God. And Second Timothy 418 Look what
- 31:38he says. The Lord will rescue me from
- 31:43every evil deed and bring me safely into His heavenly
- 31:47Kingdom. To him be the glory forever and
- 31:49ever. Amen.
- 31:50Amen. Indeed, he will.
- 31:53From every evil deed, no matter how creative, no matter how
- 31:56overwhelming, no matter how surrounding every evil deed, I
- 32:00will be delivered from nothing, will be able to sabotage the
- 32:04will of God for my life. No affliction, no assault, no
- 32:09ailment, nothing. Every evil deed will be recycled
- 32:15for the glory of God. And David is praising God for
- 32:19that. And he he responds with urgency.
- 32:21Nathan approaches him with urgency, and he responds with
- 32:23urgency, and he says, this day, I'm not waiting.
- 32:26God has made this known to me. I'm going to act on this right
- 32:28now. And so they do.
- 32:30And as they are now planning, David gives this list of
- 32:33specific instructions to Bathsheba and to Nathan.
- 32:38And we see here in verse 34 what happened.
- 32:41Specifically, let's read verse 32.
- 32:46King David said call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the Prophet,
- 32:49and Bennaya the son of Jehodia. So they came before the king.
- 32:52And the king said to them, take with you the servants of your
- 32:55Lord, and have Solomon, my son, ride on my own mule and bring
- 33:01him down to Guyon or Guillon. And let Zadok the priest and
- 33:06Nathan the prophet there anoint him king over Israel.
- 33:09Then blow the trumpet and say, Long live King Solomon, you
- 33:14shall then come up after me, and he shall come and sit on my
- 33:16throne, for he shall be the ruler over Israel and over
- 33:19Judah. So here are these instructions.
- 33:23But something stands out to me in verse 34.
- 33:25Look at verse 34. I wonder.
- 33:27I'm asking you this now I'm. I'm wondering if something
- 33:30stands out to you. Look at it and if you can notice
- 33:33it has to do with these three individuals that are named verse
- 33:4034. What positions do each
- 33:47represent? What do you have there?
- 33:50Prophet, Priest. And who?
- 33:54King. Those are the three major
- 33:57leadership offices in the old covenant that God instituted to
- 34:01serve the nation of Israel. The prophet spoke on behalf of
- 34:07God. The priest was the mediator
- 34:09between God and man and the king govern God's people, and here we
- 34:16see them working together to accomplish the will of God.
- 34:19And this is a good place to be reminded that Jesus made an
- 34:22astounding claim about himself that he was the greatest.
- 34:28He's the greatest prophet, the greatest priest, the greatest
- 34:32king. If you're at the conference, you
- 34:34remembered where Jesus said that.
- 34:35Who remembers where Jesus said that?
- 34:43That's what the Thursday night session does.
- 34:45You're still getting acquainted and settled in.
- 34:48Where did Jesus say I'm the greatest priest, I'm the
- 34:52greatest prophet, I'm the greatest king.
- 34:55Somebody said Matthew. Where in Matthew?
- 34:59See. Review is good, isn't it?
- 35:02It's good. Very good.
- 35:03Grace Matthew, chapter 12. I want to show you where Jesus
- 35:06said he's the greatest priest, He's the greatest prophet.
- 35:08He's the greatest king. Matthew, chapter 12.
- 35:09Let's look at verse 6. All in the same chapter.
- 35:13Matthew, chapter 12, verse six. What does he say?
- 35:21I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.
- 35:26He's declaring his superior priesthood, and with that, him
- 35:30being the superior and all sufficient sacrifice.
- 35:33He's not just a priest, he's a sacrifice as well.
- 35:35Hebrews declares that over and over something greater than the
- 35:39Temple is here. Whatever the temple represents
- 35:41the priesthood and the sacrifices there.
- 35:43And I'm greater than that. Matthew 1241 What is he saying?
- 35:47Matthew 1241 The men in Nineveh will rise up at the judgment
- 35:53with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the
- 35:55preaching of Jonah and behold, something greater than Jonah is
- 35:59here. Not only in the sense that the
- 36:05miracle of Jonah being in the belly of the fish pointed to the
- 36:08resurrection, but the office of Prophet as well.
- 36:11I am the greatest prophet. Matthew 1242 Can you guess what
- 36:17the next one is? You should know you got a tshirt
- 36:19with a verse on it. The Queen of the South will rise
- 36:23up of the judgment with this generation and condemn it.
- 36:25For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of
- 36:27Solomon. And behold, something greater
- 36:29than Solomon is here. Something greater than the
- 36:33temple, Something greater than Jonah, Something greater than
- 36:36Solomon, Priest, prophet, King. The concept of those things
- 36:47being mixed together in one person was totally foreign.
- 36:52It was actually illegal in the old covenant.
- 36:55There was one king who thought that he can presume to be the
- 36:58king or the priest at the same time.
- 36:59Who was that king Salt attempted to sacrifice?
- 37:04And there was another one. He became a leopard because of
- 37:07it. King Guziya, when he attempted
- 37:10to give incense in the temple and God struck him with leprosy.
- 37:17You could not overlap those offices.
- 37:18And yet Jesus, by claiming he's the greatest prophet, greatest
- 37:22priest, greatest king, you know what he's saying?
- 37:25I'm all of those things in one person.
- 37:31I'm not just one of those things.
- 37:32I'm all of those things, he declared it.
- 37:35Did the New Testament authors believe that about Jesus?
- 37:38Did the apostles believe that? Can I show you one place?
- 37:42Just this is just really, really exciting.
- 37:45I want to show you one place, just one example of how the New
- 37:48Testament authors, the authors of the Epistles, believe that
- 37:52about Jesus. Hebrews chapter one.
- 37:54Let's look at the 1st 3 verses. I love the book of Hebrews.
- 38:04You know why? It is saturated with Old
- 38:06Testament references, Old Testament imagery, Old Testament
- 38:10shadows pointing to the substance in Jesus Christ.
- 38:12But look at Hebrews one. We're very familiar with this.
- 38:14I wonder if you've seen this before.
- 38:16Verse one long ago at many times, and I want to see if you
- 38:19noticed this. And in many ways God spoke to
- 38:22our fathers by the prophets. But in these last days He's
- 38:26spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the air of all things.
- 38:29Through him also he created the world.
- 38:30He is the radiance of the glory of God in the exact imprint of
- 38:34his nature. And He upholds the universe by
- 38:36the word of His power. After making purification for
- 38:39sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
- 38:44Did you see it? Where's the reference to
- 38:48Prophet? Look at verse one.
- 38:54God spoke to our fathers by the prophets.
- 38:56Verse 2. But in these last days he has
- 38:59spoken to us. By his Son.
- 39:03By his Son. Now he speaks.
- 39:05This is the true messenger. This is the one who would bring
- 39:08forth not just the word. He is the word.
- 39:12Where do we see priests? Did you catch it?
- 39:15Good. Look at verse three.
- 39:17He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of
- 39:20his nature. And he upholds the universe by
- 39:22the word of his power after making purification for sins.
- 39:27Priest, where's king? Right after he sat down at the
- 39:34right hand of the majesty on high.
- 39:37So verse one, you have Jesus speaking forth the word of God.
- 39:41In the old all these prophets came, and now the prophet of
- 39:44prophets has come. In the old all these purified
- 39:47sins have come, but he has for one time at all time, for all
- 39:50time made purification for sins. And not only that, he has been
- 39:54exalted and he has sended into majestic glory, sitting today as
- 39:59a ruler and the sovereign overall the universe.
- 40:03Isn't that exciting? I hope so.
- 40:07Priest, Prophet, King, Prophet, Priest, king, king.
- 40:11Now do you believe that even though each?
- 40:15One of these offices occupied their own lane.
- 40:19Do you believe that? There was an anticipation for
- 40:21the Messiah to occupy all three. Let me ask you this way was.
- 40:25There any anticipation where? Is there any prophetic
- 40:28indication that when this Messiah comes, he will in fact
- 40:33be these things all in one because we kind of limit the
- 40:38Messiah? Son of David as the king, sure.
- 40:41But is there any other clear indication, prophetic utterance
- 40:44that he would be more than that? That he would be the unification
- 40:48of these offices to prove something?
- 40:50That he is the greatest leader? He is the only deliver.
- 40:53He's the one that eclipses every other attempt of delivering the
- 40:59people of God, yes. Very good.
- 41:02One of the most favorite psalms. Utilize in the New Testament by
- 41:06the Holy Spirit. What's that Psalm Psalm 110.
- 41:12Psalm 110 What are we told? Well, let's look at verse one.
- 41:15You have your Bible as a Bible study, right?
- 41:18Good. I love the screen, but
- 41:20sometimes. It makes me nervous, the Lord
- 41:25says to my Lord. Sit at my right hand until I
- 41:28make your enemies. Your foot still sit at my right
- 41:30hand. That's royalty sit where I sit
- 41:35so to. Sit in this place of authority.
- 41:39But then you read on. What is it saying?
- 41:41Verse 2. The Lord sends forth from Zion
- 41:43your mighty scepter rule in the midst of your enemies.
- 41:45That's still kingly language. Verse three, your people will
- 41:47offer themselves freely on the day of your power and holy
- 41:50garments from the womb of the morning.
- 41:52The dew of your youth will be yours.
- 41:53Now look what? Here it says.
- 41:54The Lord has sworn he's still speaking about the Lord.
- 41:57The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind.
- 41:59You are priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
- 42:06I wonder what David's reaction? Was to that when the Holy Spirit
- 42:09inspired that in him. Here is one of my.
- 42:13Sons is not just going to be my descendant, he's also going to
- 42:16be my Lord, and the Lord is going to exalt him to the place
- 42:21of heavenly glory and authority. Wow, one of my sons is going to
- 42:26be exalted to such a status. And then, as the Holy Spirit is
- 42:30revealing, this time he's also learning.
- 42:32But he's also going to be a priest.
- 42:36Uziah was stricken for attempting to be both king and
- 42:40priest, but my son is going to be exalted as king and also
- 42:43occupied the office of priest, not after the order of Levi but.
- 42:48After the order of Melchizedek, wow, can I show you one of my
- 42:52favorite prophecies concerning Jesus, the Messiah being King
- 42:55and priest at the same time? Zachariah Chapter 6 Go to
- 43:02Zachariah chapter 6 quickly I. Want you to see this because I
- 43:04want you to be absolutely amazed of how these ancient scriptures
- 43:10point to the Jesus you love and adore today.
- 43:15Jesus didn't just. Surprise, Israel.
- 43:17Jesus was anticipated, predicted, prophesied about, and
- 43:23it was the ignorance of the Jewish leadership that caused
- 43:26them to reject them in such a way, with all their sin and envy
- 43:28and all that stuff. But look at Zechariah 6.
- 43:31Let's look at verse 11 and Zechariah 6.
- 43:35Let's go to verse 12. Actually, here's a prophecy.
- 43:38Look at this. And say to him Thus says the
- 43:41Lord of hosts, behold the man whose name is the branch capital
- 43:46B. Do you know what would make a
- 43:48fascinating study? Studying all the places in the
- 43:51Old Testament where Jesus is referred to as the branch.
- 43:56Amazing references. Amazing promises and
- 43:59prerogatives that are tied into that title.
- 44:01The branch. Have you heard Jesus?
- 44:03The Branch. The branch.
- 44:07For he shall branch out from his place, and he shall he shall
- 44:11build the temple of the Lord. Some would say that's the
- 44:16spiritual. That's the Church of Jesus
- 44:19Christ. Yes, he is building a temple,
- 44:21but there's also physical temple to come.
- 44:25Look at the next verse Now this is where he.
- 44:26Gets exciting. It is he who shall build the
- 44:28temple of the Lord, and shall bear royal honor and shall sit
- 44:33and rule on his throne. Now look at this and there most
- 44:36translation says he King James, New King James.
- 44:39And a SVESV says there, but it says, And there shall be a
- 44:42priest on his throne, and he shall be a.
- 44:47Priest on his throne, Huh. Priest on the throne?
- 44:52Unheard of, unheard of, but. This branch, this Messiah, he
- 44:58will build a temple, and from that temple will be his
- 45:00headquarters. And that headquarters will not
- 45:03only be the temple, it will be where he exercises his sovereign
- 45:07rule as king priests on his throne and the council.
- 45:13Of peace shall be between them both.
- 45:17So yeah, the prophets. Understood that there is a
- 45:19Messiah to come. That will occupy something that
- 45:22has never been known and was not permitted to be known.
- 45:25Prophet, priest, king, one person, Jesus Christ of
- 45:29Nazareth. That's who it is and what's
- 45:34gonna happen is. To this, most of the chapter,
- 45:37Jonathan is going to spell out in detail what just occurred in
- 45:41the city concerning Solomon becoming king and taking over
- 45:47his father's place. I would read the rest of this,
- 45:51but I'm going to. Pause and ask this question.
- 45:53Have we seen this character, Jonathan, the son of Abby
- 45:55Athler, before? If so, where?
- 46:06OK, good. So we've.
- 46:08Seen him back in Second Samuel. We've seen him back in Second
- 46:11Samuel, Chapter 15, and if you want to turn there, you can.
- 46:14I want you to see who this Jonathan is because it's going
- 46:16to be very important understanding what he's doing
- 46:18here. And second Samuel 15.
- 46:28We're told here in verse 27, the king also said to Xanax the
- 46:32priest, Are you not a seer? Go back to the city in peace
- 46:35with your two sons, Ahimaz, your son, and Jonathan, the son of
- 46:38Abiath. I remember this is this is David
- 46:41now in exile. Absalom kicked him out and here
- 46:44he is trying to figure out what to do.
- 46:45And one of the plans is that. The son of Zadok and the son of
- 46:50Abiatra remain near the premises of Absalom and his throne so
- 46:55that they can have Intel about what Absalom is going to do
- 46:58next. Jonathan, the son of Abiatra.
- 47:01Was a spy for David during Absalom's revolt.
- 47:07He put his life on the line. He risked his life.
- 47:11He was loyal to David. And now we see him again, right?
- 47:15We see him next in Second Samuel 17, when he almost gets caught
- 47:18after the news about abstinence plan to attack came to him.
- 47:22And then there's silence. And then we see him again in
- 47:24First Kings chapter one. So is Jonathan a good guy or a
- 47:28bad guy with that knowledge, with that background?
- 47:34He's a good guy, we can honestly say.
- 47:35He's a faithful servant to the cause of Yahweh.
- 47:41Now we see him here. And he does something that he
- 47:44did back in Second Samuel 17, where he gives report.
- 47:49But there's something strange going on because he's giving
- 47:52report to who out of Naija? What happened to Jonathan?
- 48:04Do we have any right to question his loyalty now?
- 48:08Any clues? Based on what I read there that
- 48:11would give you the right to question Jonathan's fidelity?
- 48:22Very good observation. Abby Yathar, remember, was at
- 48:25this party. He, with Jo AB joined and
- 48:29changed their allegiance over to AD and Naija.
- 48:31Yes, but was it just his father? Any clue on what we read here?
- 48:36Any insight that might cause us to question Jonathan, Yes,
- 48:43that's a very. Good point.
- 48:44Did you hear that? Notice what AD and I just said.
- 48:49Jonathan as and I just said, come in for you are a worthy man
- 48:53and bring good news. Now generally that would be a
- 48:55good commendation. That would be something
- 48:58honorable, but not from a guy like this ad.
- 49:03And Nigel was very strategic on who to invite and who not to
- 49:06bring in and who to bring in right to his little get
- 49:08together. He didn't invite Nathan, he
- 49:10didn't invite Benai. He didn't invite Zadok because
- 49:13he understood their strong. Stance that he understood that
- 49:16they would not compromise. So what does it say about
- 49:20Jonathan, the son of Abbie Athar?
- 49:22For Adam and I just say, oh, he's a good guy.
- 49:24Come on in. Question mark.
- 49:27Right Flag. So is he a traitor?
- 49:32Could be. But then you read what he says
- 49:35and then you're even more confused.
- 49:37So now he explains, right. So he brings good news.
- 49:41And Jonathan's like, not really. Verse 43.
- 49:44Jonathan, answered. Adam and I just no for our Lord
- 49:46King. David has made Solomon a king,
- 49:50and the king he has sent with him Zach the priest, Nathan the
- 49:52prophet, Benign, the son of Johadada Joyada and the
- 49:55Carothites and the Pelothites. And they had him ride on the
- 49:58King's mule. And Zach the priest and Nathan
- 50:00the prophet have anointed him king, a guy on.
- 50:02And they have gone up from there rejoicing so that the city is in
- 50:05an uproar. This is a noise that you have
- 50:07heard. And he goes out to explain in
- 50:08great detail what happened. Any clue in what Jonathan said?
- 50:14That might actually indicate the opposite of what we might think,
- 50:18that he is in fact still loyal to David, King David, and not
- 50:24just King. David, what does he say?
- 50:27Jonathan verse 43 answered Anaija.
- 50:29No, for our Lord King David so at Anaija.
- 50:36At least from what we see here, still believe that David was the
- 50:40rightful king, that David still had authority that it wasn't.
- 50:44King Adan Ija, It's still King. So there's some sense of honor
- 50:48of the process here, honor of who's still truly in the
- 50:51position of authority. So is he with David?
- 50:55Is he against David? Is he with Adan Ija?
- 50:57Is he against Adan Ija? Do you know what I believe about
- 50:59it? He's a confused fellow.
- 51:02He's conflicted. He's torn.
- 51:06As our brother brought up, his father is with Adan Ija.
- 51:13You don't see. Benai you don't see.
- 51:14Zadok, you don't see Nathan coming to this camp and giving
- 51:17them a heads up of what's taking place, do you?
- 51:20Why is Jonathan here at the same time?
- 51:25There's something in him that still recognizes David for who
- 51:28he is, for our Lord, King David. So there's some kind of internal
- 51:34struggle. Here's the lesson from this Your
- 51:38testimony shouldn't be confusing.
- 51:43Shouldn't be confusing to people.
- 51:45People shouldn't wonder that you are a follower of Christ and
- 51:48also how are you that and also a lover of the world.
- 51:54It should be clear. Cut it.
- 51:55We should be like Nathan and these other fellows where even
- 51:59the world even at the Nyjah and those guys who are rebels could
- 52:02say those guys are for real. Those guys are truly pledged to
- 52:08the anointed one. People shouldn't wonder where.
- 52:13We stand on these things and let's talk about your heart.
- 52:17There shouldn't be in your heart and in mine, this division,
- 52:24this, this one foot in one. Foot out.
- 52:26He is king. But I also see this and I want
- 52:30to be part of that as well. You can't do that.
- 52:33He's not going to let you do that.
- 52:35He won't. He wants.
- 52:37Everything, every single part of you to belong to him.
- 52:43And so Jonathan here is a very sad.
- 52:45Picture of somebody who can't figure out where he stands.
- 52:50It may not be so of us, but you know what stands out to me here?
- 52:58If you look back here in verse 39, Zanuk anoints him and all
- 53:02these. Things take place, but look at
- 53:03the description of the celebration when Solomon is made
- 53:06king. And all the people went up after
- 53:08him, playing on pipes and rejoicing with great joy, so
- 53:13that the earth was split by their noise.
- 53:16Think about it was so loud. It was so resounding with shouts
- 53:22and cries and laughter, perhaps, that the earth shook.
- 53:25I mean, they heard it. They weren't too far, but they
- 53:27heard it. Compare that kind of atmosphere
- 53:30with how Nathan describes the celebration for King Adenija.
- 53:34Go to verse 25. Look at this.
- 53:37It's very similar but. You'll see a difference.
- 53:39For he has gone down this day, and has sacrificed ox, and
- 53:42fattened cattle and sheep, and abundance, and has invited all
- 53:46the King's sons, the commanders of the army, and Abiath of the
- 53:48priest. And behold, they are eating and
- 53:50drinking before. I'm saying, Long live King
- 53:52Adanaija. What's the difference?
- 53:57Both had people, both had. Specific protocols and.
- 54:02But there's something that stands out.
- 54:06Not the eating and drinking, not the.
- 54:07Music even. No, not even that necessarily.
- 54:12Look at verse 40 again. Rejoicing with great joy.
- 54:19Rejoicing with great joy. There is tangible, observable,
- 54:24genuine true joy when Nathan describes this.
- 54:29We see here that they're eating and drinking before.
- 54:30I'm saying Long live King Atanaija, but here we see that
- 54:36there's something. Deeper going on, I wonder if
- 54:38this is a lesson about how true joy is found in being an
- 54:41obedience to the will of God. You want to live according to
- 54:45your selfish. Pleasures you want to build your
- 54:47own little Kingdom. You can do that.
- 54:51You can try to think that you can conjure.
- 54:52Up a better plan for your life than if you just submit to the
- 54:55will of God. But you will never know true
- 54:58joy. Never.
- 55:01That's why you should never envy the wicked.
- 55:03Ever. Ever envy the wicked?
- 55:05And Psalms tells us repeatedly, do not envy the wicked.
- 55:08Why would we told that? Because there's something,
- 55:09especially in this day of age where everything is plastered
- 55:12before you, you can't ignore it. And we wonder why there's a rate
- 55:15of anxiety, hiking and depression and self esteem
- 55:17issues. Because all you're seeing is
- 55:19fake images of people in their lives and what do you think is
- 55:24being posted godly? Things appraise God.
- 55:27There are people who are doing that, but most of it is all look
- 55:29what my life is without God. And there's a temptation, right?
- 55:35Their life looks so easy. Their life looks so fun.
- 55:37Their life looks so easy and wonderful and joyful and
- 55:39memories and experiences. Oh, and here you are on a Friday
- 55:44night. Week after week at a Bible
- 55:47study. Amen.
- 55:49Indeed. And so here's the thing that I
- 55:53want to make. I want to make known to you even
- 55:56in a world where people want to present themselves in a certain
- 56:00way. All the little events, all the
- 56:03little gatherings, even manmade ministries, if they are not
- 56:06submitted to the will of God, you have one thing guaranteed
- 56:09they will not know true joy. It's only when you align
- 56:14yourself to. God's will, His purposes.
- 56:16And like Zadok and these other men, give yourself over to every
- 56:20detailed instruction that God has revealed to you, and conform
- 56:22your life to that will, you know, rejoicing.
- 56:26A deep seated happiness that can never be taken from you where
- 56:30you can say Amen. I want to be here on a Friday
- 56:32night because I know my God. I want to know him.
- 56:36I want to live for him and it is my delight to be in his
- 56:40presence. With God's people, That's
- 56:42Supernatural. Why are you here?
- 56:44Like this is Supernatural. You're here on a Friday night
- 56:49talking about First Kings Chapter One, and you're actually
- 56:51happy about it. That's the Holy Spirit.
- 56:56That's the miracle of regeneration.
- 56:58That's God in you. And isn't it a genuine joy?
- 57:03Isn't it true rejoicing? Absolutely.
- 57:06Let's end it here. Adenija's little party came
- 57:09crashing down, and soul will the purposes and plots of the.
- 57:14Wicked verse 49 Then all the guests of Adenija trembled and
- 57:18rose, and each went his own way. And Aden?
- 57:22I just feared Solomon. So he arose and went and took
- 57:24hold of the horns of the altar. Then it was told Solomon,
- 57:27Behold, Aden, I just fears King Solomon, for behold he has laid
- 57:31hold of the horns of the altar, saying, Let King Solomon swear
- 57:34to me first that he will not put his servant to death with the
- 57:36sword. Why is he holding on to the
- 57:39horns of the brazen altar? It's very good.
- 57:44Not many people know that reference because in Exodus 21
- 57:47we are told there by inference that there was permission to
- 57:53come. To the altar of sacrifice and
- 57:55hold onto the horns. On the corner right, there's
- 57:57these little pieces that stuck out like horns, and people would
- 58:01run there as a place of safety. If they have done any wrong, and
- 58:07that was permitted to some extent, unless they've committed
- 58:10a a capital crime that required them to be punished by death.
- 58:14And so it was a practice for people who knew they were in the
- 58:16wrong to flee to the altar and to cling.
- 58:18Why the altar? Because it represents God's
- 58:20mercy. This is where God accepts
- 58:23sacrifice to cover your sin, to overlook your your error and
- 58:26your faults. And so in in the same way they
- 58:28would run not with a sacrifice, but with their guilty hands and
- 58:31say, I'm clinging to the mercy of God, surely you will not slay
- 58:35me Where God receives sinners. In some sense, the altar
- 58:40symbolizes the mercy of Jesus Christ.
- 58:44I wonder if that's where the term.
- 58:46Altar call comes from come to the altar.
- 58:48Maybe that is it. I don't know.
- 58:50And so they they clung to this. And this is exactly what Adenija
- 58:54is doing. He's fearful of King Solomon and
- 58:57look what Solomon does. And Solomon said, if he will
- 58:59show himself a worthy man, not one of his hair shall fall to
- 59:02the earth. But if wickedness is found in
- 59:04him, he shall die. So King Solomon sent and they.
- 59:09Brought him down from the altar, and he came and paid homage to
- 59:11King Solomon. And Solomon said to him, go to
- 59:14your house. He paid homage to King Solomon.
- 59:17What goes up? And pride will come down.
- 59:20Here's a man who was willing to stand up against the will of
- 59:22God, against Solomon. And now at the end of the
- 59:24chapter, he's bowing down before Solomon.
- 59:28And what is Solomon doing here? Does he show mercy or not?
- 59:31Incredible mercy. Incredible mercy.
- 59:35Not only does it say I'm going to let you live, he lets him
- 59:38keep his house, his estate. Go to your house, just don't
- 59:42cause trouble and I'll let you live.
- 59:45And here at the end of chapter one.
- 59:47We see Solomon now finally coordinated as king, but we also
- 59:50see where He establishes his Kingdom, how we establish it.
- 59:54He builds it upon mercy. He builds it upon.
- 1:00:01He builds it upon forgiveness. This says something about
- 1:00:05Solomon. This is how he starts.
- 1:00:10And I was reading this today. You know what came to mind?
- 1:00:13How Solomon ended? Does anybody know?
- 1:00:18I wonder, does anybody know the last recorded thing that Solomon
- 1:00:22does before we told that he sleeps with his father's?
- 1:00:27The last recorded thing he begins his reign.
- 1:00:38By choosing not to kill Atanija, Let me show you how he chooses
- 1:00:42to end his reign. Go to Chapter 11.
- 1:00:45Please meet me there and verse 40.
- 1:00:53This is where Solomon was going to be disciplined for his
- 1:00:56apostasy. And the prophet Ahad Jau now
- 1:01:00comes to a man named Jerabom and was told that he would receive
- 1:01:03the Kingdom at least in part. Somehow Solomon hears about this
- 1:01:08and verse 40. This is the last thing Solomon
- 1:01:10chooses to do before we're told that he sleeps with his
- 1:01:12father's. Solomon sought therefore, to
- 1:01:14kill. Jeraboam But Jeraboam arose and
- 1:01:18fled into Egypt to Shishak, king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until
- 1:01:23the death of Solomon. That's how he ends.
- 1:01:30He begins by choosing not to kill a man.
- 1:01:33He ends by trying to kill a man justly or unjustly.
- 1:01:36Unjustly, it's not how you start.
- 1:01:42It's how you and I finish. This is a different person, and
- 1:01:48it's very possible for us to start so well, so zealous, so
- 1:01:54pure, so humble. And if we're not on guard, if
- 1:01:59we're not careful, we can end up looking completely different
- 1:02:03than how we did begun. May it not be so of us.
- 1:02:07Stay close to the Lord. Listen, finish this race well.
- 1:02:13Finish well. Keep going.
- 1:02:17Don't give up. Don't give in.
- 1:02:20Don't surrender to the flesh. It will be worth it in the end,
- 1:02:25for the sake of God's glory. Would we finish well?
- 1:02:29And may people not see a different horrendous,
- 1:02:33questionable testimony at the last of it.
- 1:02:36But may they see someone who is brighter, holier, lovelier than
- 1:02:41when they started? By God's grace, he can do it in
- 1:02:43us. Let's pray
- 1:02:58how rich is the? Banquet of your word, O Lord,
- 1:03:03how full of truth it is. And, Lord, with a lengthy
- 1:03:07chapter like this, we have indeed felt that we have sat
- 1:03:13before an. Abundance of revelation.
- 1:03:16Thank you that. In the same chapter, you can
- 1:03:19teach us theology and you can teach us practical godliness.
- 1:03:23Lord, there is nothing like this word.
- 1:03:25There's nothing like your word now.
- 1:03:28Lord more than becoming acquires of insights and connections in
- 1:03:32your word made this producing us worship worship more than a A.
- 1:03:37Song because our emotions are stirred, but worship?
- 1:03:40That translates into a life of sacrifice laid on the altar, a
- 1:03:47living sacrifice. We pray, Lord, that in this.
- 1:03:51Place we would indeed hear your voice, and hear it in a way that
- 1:03:58causes us to. Bow before you to live, for you
- 1:04:02to deny the flesh, carry our cross, renounce the world, and
- 1:04:08shine brighter for your glory. Lord, as we close this time
- 1:04:11together as a family, would you receive these last few moments
- 1:04:16of singing sacrifice, of praise, and may be pleasing to your
- 1:04:19ears? Lord, we bless you again for
- 1:04:22first kings chapter one. We thank you for speaking to our
- 1:04:26hearts. Comfort us, convict us,
- 1:04:29challenge us, encourage us. Whatever we need to be brought
- 1:04:33into greater conformity. So be it.
- 1:04:36We ask this of your Holy Spirit tonight in Jesus name.
- 1:04:39Amen. Amen.
- 1:04:41Amen. Saints.
