- 0:46Speaker 4: Welcome, ladies and gentlemen to Let's Talk with Carl Lee
- 0:49Speaker 4: and my co host today and every every time that
- 0:53Speaker 4: we're on the show is Hollis Lewis.
- 0:57Speaker 2: What's up? What's up? And want to make sure that
- 1:00Speaker 2: I give you. I want to give you a little
- 1:02Speaker 2: bit of.
- 1:04Speaker 4: An introduction too, because I think you've got a different,
- 1:09Speaker 4: somewhat of a different job.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Right you are the.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Project director of the crisis intervention team of community programs.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Give me a little bit of insight. I know that
- 1:22Speaker 4: I read that when you send it to me, but
- 1:25Speaker 4: it includes fire department, police department, all of those kinds.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Give me a little bit of information about what that
- 1:32Speaker 4: entails and what your actual role is.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Well, we work with first responders.
- 1:38Speaker 5: First responders include law enforcement, firefighters, EMS. In addition, nine
- 1:42Speaker 5: to one dispatchers, SUD professionals that substance you disorder of
- 1:48Speaker 5: professional behavior health, mental health professionals, in order to build
- 1:51Speaker 5: a better response to persons in crisis. Oftentimes, when we
- 1:55Speaker 5: interact with individuals who are suffering from some sort of
- 1:59Speaker 5: mental health condition or maybe some substance use disorder induced
- 2:04Speaker 5: mental health condition, you know, most people aren't trained in
- 2:09Speaker 5: knowing what to do. So what we do we help
- 2:11Speaker 5: facilitate those trainings, help build community partnerships. And with that,
- 2:16Speaker 5: even if you are trained to know what to do
- 2:18Speaker 5: and how to effectively get these individuals help, you may
- 2:23Speaker 5: not know your community resources that's right up the street.
- 2:27Speaker 5: So we helped, you know, connect those community resources and really,
- 2:32Speaker 5: you know, just trying to stare people from the criminal
- 2:35Speaker 5: justice system that don't necessarily need to go to the
- 2:37Speaker 5: prison or jail in order to get them the help
- 2:39Speaker 5: that they need.
- 2:41Speaker 4: And so I guess the last couple of days, you
- 2:44Speaker 4: guys have been in a state summit. Yeah, what it
- 2:49Speaker 4: give us a little bit of insight of what took
- 2:51Speaker 4: place there or what that is.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Well, this was the second annual West Virginia ci T Summit.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Basically what we did we had subject matter experts in
- 3:02Speaker 5: c I T U, c I T professionals and those
- 3:05Speaker 5: who have the practical experience you know, been running ci
- 3:08Speaker 5: T programs in their local community, just to give insight,
- 3:12Speaker 5: to give you know, because c I T there's multiple
- 3:15Speaker 5: like levels, and it's multiple aspects to it. So you know,
- 3:19Speaker 5: just giving us those there's experts, not I want to
- 3:22Speaker 5: say opinion, but expert knowledge of different aspects of the
- 3:28Speaker 5: c I T program to individuals and community members. We had,
- 3:33Speaker 5: like I said, we had firefighters, ems, law enforcement now
- 3:37Speaker 5: on one, we had local state and government officially, we
- 3:41Speaker 5: had federal government there just to you know, learn more
- 3:44Speaker 5: about it, see how they can set it up, and
- 3:46Speaker 5: for those who already have c I T programs, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 5: to expand their knowledge.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I feel like my co host is that seems very important.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Let's talk is probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker.

- 4:36Speaker 4: and any anything that you're looking for pertaining to the show.
- 4:41Speaker 4: So today's show, as everybody's fully aware that it is,
- 4:47Speaker 4: it is training camp. It is just about everybody probably
- 4:53Speaker 4: has started by the by this week, whether it's high
- 4:57Speaker 4: school or anybody, I think most every body has gotten
- 5:01Speaker 4: into that. And one of the conversations that we want
- 5:04Speaker 4: to get into today is kind of the perspective of
- 5:09Speaker 4: what is it like? What is camp like as a
- 5:12Speaker 4: as a player, as what it's like as as a coach,
- 5:17Speaker 4: And I think we'll even maybe dive into some of
- 5:20Speaker 4: the especially on some of the professional levels.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I think what the what all that entails.
- 5:26Speaker 4: So I'm going to say this hollist like, I'm going
- 5:30Speaker 4: to start just with an instant reaction to training camp
- 5:36Speaker 4: in the NFL. It is and I'm sure it's not
- 5:41Speaker 4: today because there's been a lot of changes in it.
- 5:44Speaker 4: But it was a four week dive into a playbook.
- 5:52Speaker 4: That's huge. There's there's it was. It was physical, not
- 6:00Speaker 4: just physically you had to be physically fit to get
- 6:04Speaker 4: through a camp, but also the physicality of those camps
- 6:11Speaker 4: were obviously way different than they are now. Like you
- 6:15Speaker 4: you would have scrimmagers, you would do goal line, you
- 6:17Speaker 4: would do just outright scrimmages. That's like full go. And
- 6:26Speaker 4: you know, you're talking about some of the best players
- 6:30Speaker 4: going against each other in practice in whether it be
- 6:35Speaker 4: individual drills, group drills, team drills, and you know, and
- 6:42Speaker 4: again that speaks for while there was probably more injuries
- 6:46Speaker 4: back then than there is now.
- 6:48Speaker 5: So let me ask you as far as like the
- 6:52Speaker 5: mental side of it. When you're getting that playbook, when
- 6:55Speaker 5: you guys are having your you know, individual meetings, your
- 6:59Speaker 5: team meetings, what does that consist of? Are you just learning, like,
- 7:03Speaker 5: are you just kind of learning how to playbook? Are
- 7:05Speaker 5: you watching film?
- 7:07Speaker 2: How is that? How are you digesting that playbook?
- 7:12Speaker 4: Well, the film work comes after, you know, in between
- 7:17Speaker 4: the practices, and it's of practice and it is about
- 7:22Speaker 4: you know, like if you do goal line, if you
- 7:25Speaker 4: do a scrimmage, they're looking to see whether it be footwork,
- 7:32Speaker 4: whether you're doing what you're supposed to do, all of those.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Kinds of things.
- 7:41Speaker 4: I think the biggest problem for most people coming into
- 7:46Speaker 4: the NFL to play is not necessarily skill set, because
- 7:52Speaker 4: they probably got drafted, they probably had a great career
- 7:55Speaker 4: in college, no matter what level of college that they played,
- 7:58Speaker 4: they had some success.
- 8:00Speaker 2: That's there.
- 8:01Speaker 4: The hardest part of it is the reality of the playbook.
- 8:05Speaker 5: So look and to that point because I know, you know,
- 8:08Speaker 5: when you're talking about defenses of coverages, those are going
- 8:11Speaker 5: to vary depending on the offensive alignment. You know, maybe
- 8:15Speaker 5: a play right if they have a special wide receiver, special.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Tight end quarterback.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Obviously, So when you are going into those film sessions,
- 8:23Speaker 5: particularly in training camp, and you're learning, like I mean,
- 8:28Speaker 5: is it like you got to learn the verbiage, You
- 8:30Speaker 5: got to learn.
- 8:31Speaker 2: When the role coverage, when to do this, when to
- 8:33Speaker 2: do that?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Yeah, you gotta you gotta know what you're checking out
- 8:37Speaker 4: of because there's going to be formations that that coverage
- 8:39Speaker 4: doesn't work with. So you've you've got to learn. So
- 8:43Speaker 4: you guys are checking, like yah, yeah, yeah, we're checking.
- 8:45Speaker 4: We're checking, just like the quarterback is is making changes
- 8:49Speaker 4: in in in the plays we see something that we
- 8:53Speaker 4: can't play, you know, and you may remember this even
- 8:56Speaker 4: going back to West Virginia State, when you get a
- 8:59Speaker 4: trip formation, which is three wide receivers, whether it be
- 9:02Speaker 4: a tight end or back or whoever, however you make
- 9:05Speaker 4: those three receivers on one side, usually you can't play
- 9:08Speaker 4: a cover four, which is a four deep coverage on
- 9:12Speaker 4: this flood. Yeah, that's because they're flooding your zone. So
- 9:15Speaker 4: you have to make that check. So that would be
- 9:18Speaker 4: more than likely it's going to be the strong safety.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Who's making that check. And again those I mean that
- 9:26Speaker 2: kind of information.
- 9:27Speaker 4: You you don't have a lot of time to learn those,
- 9:31Speaker 4: those checks, what formations, but it's it's something that you
- 9:36Speaker 4: do have to you do have to spend a lot
- 9:39Speaker 4: of time in.
- 9:40Speaker 5: So let me ask you this, and this kind of
- 9:42Speaker 5: maybe a nuanced question, but I know, like offensively right,
- 9:45Speaker 5: So when we're making check, we have to we have
- 9:48Speaker 5: to speak our own coded language, if you will, because
- 9:51Speaker 5: obviously if we say you know, run a sixth route,
- 9:54Speaker 5: you're gonna know what that is most likely, or we're
- 9:56Speaker 5: gonna say go here and go there, you'll be able
- 9:58Speaker 5: to pick it up. So in your verbage part of it,
- 10:01Speaker 5: when you are making the checks adjustments of the line,
- 10:04Speaker 5: what what is it? Can you do you remember kind
- 10:07Speaker 5: of what that verbose would even sound like.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Like the the the strong safety would would say trips right,
- 10:12Speaker 4: trips left or whatever, whatever side it's on, and then
- 10:16Speaker 4: he would give us probably like a red call.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Red call would be three.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Okay, So so yeah, so you'd have some color and
- 10:23Speaker 4: then sometimes you would actually get a name for it.
- 10:28Speaker 2: You know, we started you start out basically.
- 10:31Speaker 4: With with color and and and the very first coverage
- 10:34Speaker 4: that you want to learn is cover three.
- 10:36Speaker 2: That's your base coverage, that's your three deep coverage. So
- 10:39Speaker 2: you're so.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Any your any check is usually gonna get you back
- 10:44Speaker 4: to cover three, which is gonna be red. And then
- 10:50Speaker 4: then there's the the the reality of dual calls, like
- 10:55Speaker 4: you might you might come out with a they may
- 10:59Speaker 4: give you a you know, a thirty two, so it's
- 11:03Speaker 4: three for this or twenty three two for.
- 11:06Speaker 2: A base coverage that you're gonna play in.
- 11:08Speaker 4: But if they give you this formation, you want to
- 11:11Speaker 4: get to three or you want to get to four.
- 11:13Speaker 4: So those kind of checks are also available to you
- 11:18Speaker 4: as well once you're in that dual coverage.
- 11:20Speaker 5: And what's funny about this conversation is that, because I know, like,
- 11:24Speaker 5: for example, defensive, y'all spend a lot of time trying
- 11:28Speaker 5: to I ain't gonna say maybe not a lot of time,
- 11:29Speaker 5: but y'all do spend time trying to interpret our call.
- 11:32Speaker 5: So if I'm calling something at the line, you'll try
- 11:35Speaker 5: to pick up on one of my checks. So if
- 11:37Speaker 5: I say, like if gold is the hot color, you'll
- 11:38Speaker 5: try to pick up on that. If I, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 5: thirty two forty three, you'll try to pick up on
- 11:42Speaker 5: what I'm saying. I don't know we as offensive players
- 11:45Speaker 5: have ever tried to pick up on what you guys
- 11:46Speaker 5: are saying back then.
- 11:47Speaker 4: I think part of the problem is when you I
- 11:51Speaker 4: think I have an answer and it's not. It's not
- 11:53Speaker 4: a professional, professional answer, or a coach might be able
- 11:57Speaker 4: to override this, but to me, I think, for the
- 12:01Speaker 4: because the quarterback is making the check, no one else
- 12:03Speaker 4: is making the check, the line will maybe the offensive
- 12:06Speaker 4: line may be making some checks there, they'll make their check,
- 12:09Speaker 4: but they're gonna make their checks based on what they see.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's only really kind of affects yam. It's not. Yes,
- 12:14Speaker 2: it doesn't affect anybody else.
- 12:15Speaker 4: For you, as the quarterback, you're looking around to try
- 12:20Speaker 4: to see if you're lined up right, if your backs
- 12:24Speaker 4: are right. You got to check the D line to
- 12:27Speaker 4: see if it's a run if it's right there.
- 12:31Speaker 2: So you don't have the time necessarily to.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Always try to say, well, what what's the coverage that
- 12:38Speaker 4: they're in right now, unless it's a pre road cover
- 12:42Speaker 4: three or or what they're justin to or what they're Yeah, yeah,
- 12:46Speaker 4: you can't.
- 12:46Speaker 2: You can't. I think it's more difficult for you. But somebody,
- 12:49Speaker 2: like the tight end wide receiver running back to somebody
- 12:52Speaker 2: ought to.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Be I think the receivers could do that, and I
- 12:55Speaker 4: think they do do that, And they may do that
- 12:58Speaker 4: because they'll.
- 12:58Speaker 2: See like somebody bliss and then they'll say hot, hot
- 13:00Speaker 2: and different things.
- 13:01Speaker 1: See.
- 13:02Speaker 4: But the tricky thing about Let's say the receiver is
- 13:05Speaker 4: out there and he sees two high safeties right, which
- 13:07Speaker 4: mean the safeties are the deepest.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Two guys, and they got one half of the field.
- 13:10Speaker 2: They got both of them got both half of the field.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Well, when the ball snapped, that strong side safety can
- 13:17Speaker 4: come up and play cover three. So now somebody's got
- 13:22Speaker 4: to see that guy coming up. That receiver now no
- 13:25Speaker 4: longer is going to be that person because he can't
- 13:27Speaker 4: make the technique. Why exactly, So, now that that's where
- 13:32Speaker 4: the quarterback now has to be the one to see
- 13:38Speaker 4: what that coverage actually becomes. Even if he doesn't hear
- 13:43Speaker 4: the check, he's got to figure out. He's got to
- 13:46Speaker 4: know where that strong safety he's going to be. He's
- 13:49Speaker 4: got to know where where we're rolling strong side or
- 13:52Speaker 4: weak side. He's got to figure that out. Yeah, and
- 13:55Speaker 4: for all your quarterbacks out there, that is your first read.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Normally you're looking at the safeties to see what they're doing.
- 14:00Speaker 4: They're gonna dictate coverage, all right. So let's get back
- 14:03Speaker 4: to the training camp. So walk us through what a
- 14:05Speaker 4: day looks like. So you arrive at training camp. What
- 14:09Speaker 4: does a day look like? When does it start? What
- 14:11Speaker 4: are you kind of going to.
- 14:12Speaker 2: You're probably you're waking up.
- 14:16Speaker 4: You're probably waking up at the at least back in
- 14:18Speaker 4: the day, we would wake up probably about six o'clock
- 14:21Speaker 4: where you're staying at First, so we're staying we used
- 14:24Speaker 4: to stay at Mankato State, which is it's about three
- 14:28Speaker 4: hours or so from from Minneapolis. So we go way
- 14:33Speaker 4: out at the Vikings. Now they have their facility in
- 14:37Speaker 4: right in.
- 14:38Speaker 5: And I was going to just say that, like I
- 14:40Speaker 5: just visited the Vikings the facility. Yes, so I was there.
- 14:44Speaker 5: They stay at the Omni Hotel right there, and their
- 14:47Speaker 5: facility is just it's gorgeous.
- 14:49Speaker 2: It really is. I can't even.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Imagine, of course I've seen it. I can't even imagine
- 14:54Speaker 4: having that. You know, again, you're staying in the hotel versus.
- 14:59Speaker 5: And the hotel's like when it's it's literally walking distance
- 15:02Speaker 5: from the facility. You have you have about six outdoor fields,
- 15:06Speaker 5: you have an indoor field. You got a cafeteria where
- 15:10Speaker 5: you can get three meals a day, so your locker room,
- 15:13Speaker 5: you got your masseuses and all that other stuff.
- 15:15Speaker 2: All that stuff.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Yes, wow, So we would we would we would get
- 15:20Speaker 4: up around six o'clock, go to breakfast.
- 15:27Speaker 2: After you after you do breakfast, you go to it.
- 15:29Speaker 2: You go to your morning meeting that morning in that
- 15:32Speaker 2: office or individual. That's that's it. Starts.
- 15:36Speaker 4: It may start off individual, then it may go it
- 15:40Speaker 4: may go DB's and and and linebackers and then or
- 15:45Speaker 4: and then we all come together, as you know, as
- 15:48Speaker 4: a defensive team and watch yesterday's film or whatever film
- 15:55Speaker 4: we have.
- 15:55Speaker 5: So you might have three meetings before the first practice.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, yeah you could, yeah, trust me, it's
- 16:03Speaker 4: it's it's an all day thing.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Okay, go ahead, go ahead.
- 16:06Speaker 4: So so then when you when you when you get
- 16:09Speaker 4: your morning meeting done, now you head to practice, get dressed,
- 16:16Speaker 4: come out for practice. Practice is over, you go back
- 16:22Speaker 4: to the locker room, change up, go have lunch, you
- 16:26Speaker 4: get it.
- 16:27Speaker 2: You get a little bit.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Of a nap time and then let's let's go. Let's
- 16:30Speaker 4: walk back to that practice.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Now.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Is that like a defensive practice of offensive practice with
- 16:34Speaker 5: how how does that work?
- 16:35Speaker 4: It's it's offense offenses on one side, one field defenses
- 16:39Speaker 4: on the other side. They're doing your individual work, so
- 16:42Speaker 4: it's individual work by position.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Then it could be group work.
- 16:47Speaker 4: By secondary and you know, coverage with the with the linebackers.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Then you come together, then you'll break up and what
- 16:56Speaker 4: what everybody I think everybody knows the term you're you're
- 16:59Speaker 4: pretty much doing a set on seven with yes it's
- 17:03Speaker 4: called and and then the D line and O line
- 17:07Speaker 4: and linebackers. Some of the linebackers will go there and
- 17:10Speaker 4: they'll they'll switch out and you and and you're basically
- 17:16Speaker 4: working on your coverages while the while the offense is
- 17:19Speaker 4: working on their their routes. And and again quarterback is
- 17:24Speaker 4: getting opportunities now to.
- 17:27Speaker 2: To to read cover just because.
- 17:30Speaker 4: And I know, at least back in the day, we
- 17:33Speaker 4: started off with checks because most of the people should
- 17:38Speaker 4: know the checks if you've been there a few years.
- 17:41Speaker 4: The only people who don't know the checks and doesn't
- 17:43Speaker 4: know really quote the defense or the offense are the
- 17:46Speaker 4: new guys coming in so starting so so we so yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 4: we're yeah, yeah, we may. We may. We may run
- 17:52Speaker 4: cover three and just stay in it, but or cover
- 17:56Speaker 4: two and we we may, we we're not. We're not
- 17:59Speaker 4: gonna stay cover three if they give us trips. Usually
- 18:02Speaker 4: the way they'll do that, the way they'll manage that,
- 18:07Speaker 4: they won't give us the trips. They'll give us everything else,
- 18:10Speaker 4: but they won't give us a trip to have to
- 18:12Speaker 4: necessarily make that cut, that that check. But if they did,
- 18:16Speaker 4: we would already have to know that anyway, So the burden.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Really is on you as the as the new guy, to.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Learn the offense, to learn the defense, because and that's
- 18:28Speaker 4: through the playbook.
- 18:29Speaker 2: That's through that's.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Through the playbook and playbook meetings and on the field.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Okay, you got you at some point. And I'm gonna say,
- 18:38Speaker 2: for me, what the easiest way for me to learn
- 18:44Speaker 2: it was really on the field.
- 18:47Speaker 4: And again, corners not very difficult to have to learn,
- 18:51Speaker 4: you know, it's it's safety line bockers.
- 18:55Speaker 2: That's a different deal. That's a whole different deal man
- 18:57Speaker 2: partic more running based off Yes, linebackers.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Probably, yes, because and they've got they've got coverage and
- 19:05Speaker 4: they also have run responsibility. And then when you're blitzing,
- 19:09Speaker 4: they're in that and they gotta they gotta get you
- 19:12Speaker 4: in and out of those blitzers. So the linebackers are
- 19:18Speaker 4: they have a lot.
- 19:19Speaker 2: To do, all right.
- 19:20Speaker 5: So okay, so you you you have your practice, then
- 19:24Speaker 5: you're done with practice.
- 19:25Speaker 2: What happens and he said, no, so we get a nap.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Then after after the nap, we come back for two
- 19:30Speaker 4: days because that was we had too a days back then.
- 19:32Speaker 4: So now you come back practice again pretty much same
- 19:37Speaker 4: same style.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Of practice.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Typically, now you're gonna have in that evening practice, you're
- 19:41Speaker 4: gonna have a place where you're gonna do a special teams.
- 19:47Speaker 2: An introduction to the special teams.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Might be punt team, punk return, field goal, field goal block, kickoff,
- 19:53Speaker 4: kickoff return.
- 19:54Speaker 2: It'll be one of one of those.
- 19:56Speaker 4: They already have some people designed to put in that,
- 19:59Speaker 4: but they're have other folks that will also run down
- 20:02Speaker 4: on kickoff, rundown on punts. You know, as you're on
- 20:05Speaker 4: the outside, guys, you're considered the gunners. Most of those
- 20:08Speaker 4: are going to be your DB's. So then once you
- 20:14Speaker 4: once you finished that evening, that second practice, now back
- 20:18Speaker 4: in shower.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Now you're going to dinner. You come from dinner.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Now you got to follow up meeting and by the
- 20:28Speaker 4: time you get.
- 20:29Speaker 5: And then as far as you guys, like far as
- 20:31Speaker 5: you're eating now, because I believe you said you staying
- 20:34Speaker 5: at a college campus.
- 20:35Speaker 2: So did y'all just see that at the calf? How
- 20:36Speaker 2: did that work? Yes, we had we we we we
- 20:39Speaker 2: ate at the calf.
- 20:40Speaker 4: But they had certain they brought in the food also
- 20:44Speaker 4: it's ca yeah, it's well, they may have cooked it,
- 20:48Speaker 4: but it wasn't like it wasn't. It wasn't like school food. Okay,
- 20:52Speaker 4: if that makes sense, you know what I'm saying. I
- 20:53Speaker 4: was it was it back in the day.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Was a situation in which they're trying like because I know,
- 20:58Speaker 5: for example, they may the lineman to get a little
- 21:01Speaker 5: bit more beefier. They may want a linebacker or running
- 21:03Speaker 5: back to slim down. Was it a situation when you
- 21:06Speaker 5: guys are working with dietitians to try to you know, feed.
- 21:10Speaker 4: That wasn't that really wasn't. That wasn't a thing then
- 21:14Speaker 4: with a dietitian. But yes, there were tons of guys
- 21:19Speaker 4: because you have to weigh in the morning and then
- 21:24Speaker 4: you weigh again at the end of practice. So in
- 21:27Speaker 4: the first practice in the morning, in the second practice
- 21:29Speaker 4: in the evening, you weigh. Okay, So I should have
- 21:33Speaker 4: put that in there now the guys who are overweight,
- 21:36Speaker 4: and there would be there's gonna be four or five
- 21:38Speaker 4: of those guys, you know, always always of lineman running
- 21:44Speaker 4: back or to running back maybe co so you they
- 21:51Speaker 4: would not give you, I mean like you had to
- 21:54Speaker 4: be watching your food and and Bud would literally because
- 21:59Speaker 4: you're getting fine if you're overweight, okay, you know, so
- 22:02Speaker 4: there there.
- 22:03Speaker 2: So back in the day, there was fines if you
- 22:05Speaker 2: were overweight.
- 22:05Speaker 5: Now now is that weight based on your position or
- 22:08Speaker 5: just based on you personally where they want you to.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Where they want you to be, So you don't get
- 22:13Speaker 4: you you don't necessarily get to pick that.
- 22:16Speaker 2: My roommate was six five sixty six and he.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Was probably one of the first three hundred pounders.
- 22:26Speaker 2: That he did.
- 22:27Speaker 4: He play, he played he plaid offensive tackle, and they
- 22:34Speaker 4: would constantly get him to that he'd always have to
- 22:38Speaker 4: lose weight. He'd always be ten fifteen above. And because no,
- 22:43Speaker 4: because three hundred was like a was not was a
- 22:45Speaker 4: bad number back then, Like nobody wanted that guy. They
- 22:49Speaker 4: thought you couldn't you couldn't move, and he was, I
- 22:51Speaker 4: mean he was the most athletic and the fastest lineman
- 22:54Speaker 4: we had.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's probably wrong. Yeah, it was totally wrong. It
- 22:58Speaker 2: was totally wrong.
- 22:59Speaker 3: And so.
- 23:01Speaker 4: After after, you know, we get about a forty five
- 23:04Speaker 4: minute break at the end of the day, so we'd
- 23:06Speaker 4: go to this, you know, we go to a little
- 23:08Speaker 4: club and hang out and you know, do whatever you do,
- 23:11Speaker 4: and then we'd stop by, you know, hearties, which is
- 23:18Speaker 4: one of the reasons why I don't like hardiest because
- 23:21Speaker 4: that's all you had.
- 23:23Speaker 2: And so.
- 23:25Speaker 4: I would get something to eat. And if I didn't
- 23:30Speaker 4: bring him something something to eat, he would take mine
- 23:33Speaker 4: like or he would.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Take of it. And I mean, you know, like what
- 23:36Speaker 2: am I doing?
- 23:37Speaker 4: Like what I ain't got There's no way I could
- 23:39Speaker 4: defend myself against him and he and he's thinking it's funny.
- 23:44Speaker 4: We were joking with it because like sometimes I would
- 23:47Speaker 4: purposely not get it and and he'd be like, so
- 23:51Speaker 4: I come in and he'd be laying, he'd be laying
- 23:54Speaker 4: in his bed. I go over, sit my bag down,
- 23:59Speaker 4: square up, start start eating, and he'll get up and
- 24:03Speaker 4: he'll like have his hand like he's pinching, like like
- 24:05Speaker 4: he gonna take half of that burden. And I'm like,
- 24:09Speaker 4: and I called him big boy. I said, big boy, No,
- 24:11Speaker 4: you you ain't getting none of this because you got
- 24:12Speaker 4: to you gotta get your weight down. And he would
- 24:15Speaker 4: call me big boy. He said, big boy, I'm gonna
- 24:20Speaker 4: get some of that one wait for him, and so
- 24:24Speaker 4: he would he would physically take it.
- 24:27Speaker 2: He would physically just.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Grab it so every daw and then I would bring
- 24:32Speaker 4: it to him, but I you know, and even bringing
- 24:34Speaker 4: it by him one and I never bought him fries,
- 24:38Speaker 4: So he would steal some of my fries, but I
- 24:41Speaker 4: would never buy him fries because I knew that was
- 24:44Speaker 4: that was really.
- 24:44Speaker 2: No good to get him.
- 24:45Speaker 5: I don't know if they had salads back in the day,
- 24:48Speaker 5: have no found So some of me ask you just
- 24:50Speaker 5: kind of to that point, uh, I know, And we'll
- 24:53Speaker 5: talk about this in the second. When you were a
- 24:55Speaker 5: coach of state West Virginia State University, like we had
- 24:58Speaker 5: to run and tests. So was that something that you
- 25:01Speaker 5: guys had in the pros that you have, like any
- 25:03Speaker 5: sort of physical tests that you had to achieve in
- 25:07Speaker 5: order to even participate in brands?
- 25:09Speaker 4: But but Grant he he would his idea of being
- 25:14Speaker 4: in shape was was gassers, you know, which is again
- 25:18Speaker 4: that's an old school run, that's what we were in. Yeah,
- 25:22Speaker 4: so he would make you run the gassers and you'd
- 25:25Speaker 4: have to be able to run so many in a
- 25:27Speaker 4: certain amount of time, and if you couldn't, then you know,
- 25:32Speaker 4: you know.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Again his idea was fining and all those kinds of things.
- 25:37Speaker 4: As as we went on, Let's Stecho created an actual
- 25:42Speaker 4: running test and it was it was extremely difficult and
- 25:51Speaker 4: a lot of players, like you know, like what did
- 25:55Speaker 4: they call it, Like was it the Iron Man Contest
- 25:57Speaker 4: or something like that. It was something something like that
- 25:59Speaker 4: to insinuate like whoever the best person was actually Darren Nelson.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Darren Nelson won it out of Stanford. He was our
- 26:08Speaker 4: running back. But the conditioning, the conditioning piece of it.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Was really really.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Impactful because you had to do a whole bunch to
- 26:25Speaker 4: get there because Bud's idea was you you should be
- 26:28Speaker 4: in shape when you get here, and so if you
- 26:31Speaker 4: weren't in shape when you got there, it was gonna
- 26:33Speaker 4: show up, you know.
- 26:35Speaker 2: And then when burnsy d gosh I called him, call
- 26:40Speaker 2: him Burnsley so much, Jerry.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Burns He kind of took a little bit of less
- 26:46Speaker 4: DECLs and a little bit of Buds to to to
- 26:50Speaker 4: create a running test, so you could you'd have to
- 26:53Speaker 4: do so many of this and so many of that
- 26:56Speaker 4: to be able to do it. And then we would
- 26:57Speaker 4: run sometimes we would run some forties and some stuff
- 27:00Speaker 4: like that, just as for speed stuff. But it was
- 27:04Speaker 4: really old school, you know, like walking walking anywhere on
- 27:10Speaker 4: the field, like you coming out of it.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Let's say you come in for me. Let's say you.
- 27:18Speaker 4: You not even thinking about the possibility of walking on
- 27:21Speaker 4: and saying, hey, Carl, I got you. I'm not even
- 27:23Speaker 4: thinking about not running off the field. And again, Bud
- 27:29Speaker 4: was not a bench guy, you know, so like you
- 27:31Speaker 4: didn't you could won. You could never leave your helmet.
- 27:34Speaker 4: You could never sit your helmet down. You could never
- 27:36Speaker 4: leave it. You can never sit on it. You you
- 27:39Speaker 4: remember a whole lot of that because that made sense
- 27:42Speaker 4: to me, Like the helmet's the most important thing, so
- 27:45Speaker 4: no one could ever put their helmet down and walk
- 27:49Speaker 4: away from it.
- 27:50Speaker 2: You always had to have it in your hand.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Yeah, and I and again I created that for State
- 27:54Speaker 4: because I thought I thought it was I thought it
- 27:56Speaker 4: was a great idea.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Okay, so kind of not necessarily to that point. But
- 28:02Speaker 5: like again, when you're entering camp at the professional level, again,
- 28:07Speaker 5: I think even back in the day, the roster was
- 28:09Speaker 5: comprised of fifty two to fifty three guys, right, So
- 28:12Speaker 5: in addition to those guys who are veterans, those guys
- 28:15Speaker 5: who are drafted, you also have a litany of free
- 28:18Speaker 5: agents that are part of this training camp. So generally,
- 28:23Speaker 5: again and we're talking about guys fighting for the professional
- 28:26Speaker 5: lives in a sport where there is and particularly at
- 28:29Speaker 5: that time, there is no necessarily no second you know,
- 28:33Speaker 5: there's no to fail. There's no other opportunities, and if
- 28:36Speaker 5: there are, they're not opportunities to really make a livable
- 28:39Speaker 5: wage even to even today. I mean, you have the
- 28:41Speaker 5: US the USF or UFL, and that's pretty good. But
- 28:45Speaker 5: again it's just that one. You have Canada and that's
- 28:48Speaker 5: kind of and you're starting to have to sprout some
- 28:49Speaker 5: league leagues overseas. So how was the competition level at practice,
- 28:55Speaker 5: considering like this is the shot.
- 28:58Speaker 4: It was it's me and you being friends, but me
- 29:01Speaker 4: and you both playing either cornerback or or quarterback. Okay,
- 29:07Speaker 4: we know that because if they if they drafted a quarterback,
- 29:12Speaker 4: he's staying. Yeah, you already know that he's staying because
- 29:16Speaker 4: he's probably high one, two, three, four, Maybe he's staying.
- 29:21Speaker 4: So he's going to be the backup. So one of
- 29:25Speaker 4: us has got to go. And I was in that
- 29:27Speaker 4: situation with the gentleman by the name of John Swain,
- 29:29Speaker 4: who was a corner and they brought in a guy
- 29:31Speaker 4: by the name of Mike Holt who had already covered
- 29:34Speaker 4: Jerry Rice in college and shut him down. So there
- 29:37Speaker 4: was no question he was going to be there. So
- 29:41Speaker 4: the competition was really between me and him because one
- 29:44Speaker 4: of us was going to have to start, and you
- 29:48Speaker 4: know it, you know who your competition is.
- 29:53Speaker 2: It just depends. But you try to stay friendly with it.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Now, me and Swain didn't stay necessarily didn't stay all
- 30:00Speaker 4: the time friendly with it, because he wasn't really like.
- 30:04Speaker 2: We weren't the best of friends.
- 30:05Speaker 4: You know, we were okay, but we didn't necessarily get
- 30:09Speaker 4: we weren't hanging out together. And so it was so
- 30:12Speaker 4: to me that made it even better for me because
- 30:15Speaker 4: I had no problem in trying to get it, trying
- 30:19Speaker 4: to get that position. You know, and I think most
- 30:22Speaker 4: players and if you think about it in your own mindset, you.
- 30:28Speaker 2: You may, you may, you may like me, but only
- 30:32Speaker 2: one of us is gonna make it. Yeah, you may
- 30:36Speaker 2: stay cool with me.
- 30:37Speaker 4: But on the other side of it, every time I
- 30:39Speaker 4: make a play, you're thinking about it.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I need to make two.
- 30:42Speaker 5: I mean, in this situation, not only is it about
- 30:45Speaker 5: just making the team or even starting, but you're talking
- 30:47Speaker 5: about like a living You're talking about God.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Yes, yes, because again, like you said, back in those days,
- 30:52Speaker 4: you didn't have you didn't have.
- 30:54Speaker 2: The only place you had to go back then was Canada. Canada.
- 30:57Speaker 5: Yeah, and and you only get a limited number of marriages,
- 30:59Speaker 5: exactly exactly so, and that's not where if you played
- 31:03Speaker 5: in the league, that's the last place you want to
- 31:04Speaker 5: go now is Canada.
- 31:05Speaker 2: If you started there and came back, that's another story.
- 31:09Speaker 2: But you ain't. You don't want to leave the league,
- 31:12Speaker 2: and and and and.
- 31:13Speaker 4: I think it's even worse if if you got a
- 31:15Speaker 4: little bit of playtime and you think that you could play,
- 31:20Speaker 4: and you get cut, you're hoping, if anything, you're hoping
- 31:23Speaker 4: to get picked up by somebody else, you know, compared
- 31:28Speaker 4: to getting stuck and being forced maybe like not to
- 31:31Speaker 4: play at all.
- 31:32Speaker 5: So let me ask you that like far As, like
- 31:35Speaker 5: you know, because you're you played in Minnesota, Minnesota is
- 31:38Speaker 5: right there far as next to Canada. Was there ever,
- 31:42Speaker 5: like any sort of relationship with those players up there.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Did they ever come down try to like watch the
- 31:47Speaker 5: games or just.
- 31:48Speaker 4: I think I think that we I think we had
- 31:50Speaker 4: a couple of guys I don't remember their names. I
- 31:52Speaker 4: think we had a couple of guys that had come down.
- 31:57Speaker 4: I want to say, Neil Google most might have been
- 32:01Speaker 4: one of those one of those players. But I'm not
- 32:03Speaker 4: one hundred percent short because I know he I'm I'm not.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Sure, but it was.
- 32:09Speaker 4: It didn't make it any easier or it wasn't any
- 32:12Speaker 4: more acceptable to to to go or to come. It's
- 32:16Speaker 4: better for to come down if you're in, if you're
- 32:19Speaker 4: there and you're getting a chance to play in the league.
- 32:21Speaker 4: I think that's that's better. But let's take a quick
- 32:24Speaker 4: break and we'll be right back.

- 33:59Speaker 2: All right, so us.
- 34:02Speaker 4: You know, in the lining of those in the in
- 34:05Speaker 4: line of those questions. One of the interesting things that
- 34:08Speaker 4: I think about when I when I when I answer
- 34:12Speaker 4: questions like that, is the the seriousness of practice. Yeah,
- 34:22Speaker 4: and the the relevance of how important every play that
- 34:29Speaker 4: you try to make or make or don't make, how
- 34:34Speaker 4: that plays against you or for you, how relevant that.
- 34:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 34:41Speaker 4: I think kids think like when they you know, oh
- 34:43Speaker 4: my bad, Like that's not you know that, that's not
- 34:49Speaker 4: a term you know in camp? Yeah, because you you
- 34:53Speaker 4: you mess you mess up, You do something that's kind
- 34:57Speaker 4: of unexpected, something that you shouldn't do. You you blow coverages,
- 35:03Speaker 4: you blow blitzes. You know, you go to the wrong gap.
- 35:07Speaker 4: You drop balls that are that hit you right in
- 35:10Speaker 4: the hand. Those are way bigger than my bad.
- 35:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, because like I said, not only are
- 35:17Speaker 5: you maybe affecting other players, you're affecting yourself as well.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Absolutely, your ability to be on this team.
- 35:23Speaker 4: We can, we can, we trust you because if you
- 35:26Speaker 4: drop a if you drop a ball that's wide open
- 35:28Speaker 4: and everybody, and you've heard this before, anybody can do that.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Don't worry about it.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Yeah, you need to worry about it. When you start
- 35:38Speaker 4: talking about you want to get to the next level.
- 35:41Speaker 4: You drop two balls that are thrown right to you.
- 35:44Speaker 4: They're already looking to see if there's somebody else. You know,
- 35:47Speaker 4: how many did you catch? And if you caught all yours,
- 35:51Speaker 4: I got in isiit. Yeah, because now they're looking where
- 35:54Speaker 4: at you and thinking, you know, and again, unless you're
- 35:58Speaker 4: way in the top of the draft and you're in
- 36:03Speaker 4: you don't have a lot of you don't have a
- 36:04Speaker 4: lot of.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Room for era, room for air.
- 36:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's and that's and that creates you know, that
- 36:08Speaker 5: can create a lot of just pressure.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Yes, So let me ask you and I know that.
- 36:13Speaker 5: Like, for example, this week, there've been a lot of
- 36:15Speaker 5: discussions about Aaron Rodgers playing preseason games, and there's been
- 36:20Speaker 5: a lot of discussion in general about the preseason games,
- 36:24Speaker 5: whether they're going to allard to two, move it up
- 36:26Speaker 5: the regular season.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Eighteen blah blah blah.
- 36:29Speaker 5: So when you were in the league and everything like that,
- 36:33Speaker 5: how important were those preseason games?
- 36:37Speaker 4: They were critical for me early on trying to make
- 36:41Speaker 4: the team. When you when you get that opportunity to
- 36:45Speaker 4: get on the field and imagine running on the field
- 36:49Speaker 4: as a rookie, I don't care what draft pick you are,
- 36:54Speaker 4: but I was again.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I was right in the middle.
- 36:57Speaker 4: I'm running on the field for the first time with
- 37:00Speaker 4: the Viking uniform on against whatever team, and I'm getting
- 37:04Speaker 4: ready to play.
- 37:07Speaker 2: It's the it's it's the it's the it's the it's
- 37:10Speaker 2: the ultimate dream come true.
- 37:14Speaker 4: But what you don't realize is the skill set and
- 37:18Speaker 4: the speed of the game.
- 37:20Speaker 5: Did did practice in training camp adequately prepare you for that?
- 37:25Speaker 2: Yes?
- 37:26Speaker 4: And no, you know, I got the luxury to go
- 37:28Speaker 4: against Anthony carter Ac from Michigan, you know constantly. So
- 37:36Speaker 4: at least I saw somebody who was who was great.
- 37:39Speaker 4: I went against somebody.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Who was great.
- 37:44Speaker 4: But when you're in the game, even a preseason game,
- 37:48Speaker 4: and you're you're against somebody you don't know, or what
- 37:51Speaker 4: happens when you go out with the starter and you're
- 37:53Speaker 4: looking at Sterling Shark and you you well, he was
- 37:59Speaker 4: behind me, but and you don't know you know his history,
- 38:03Speaker 4: you know, or Jerry Rice, You're you're standing out there
- 38:06Speaker 4: against him and you're and you're and you making the team.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Maybe all about how you handle that.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Yeah, there is no starstruck because if you get if
- 38:20Speaker 4: you if you're a starstruck and you're and you're paying
- 38:22Speaker 4: attention to who you got, you got a.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Problem, that's a good that's important nuance, you know.
- 38:29Speaker 4: I mean, you can't you know, you have to go
- 38:32Speaker 4: out and play as hard as you can and just
- 38:37Speaker 4: play and and and you you need to make it
- 38:39Speaker 4: like it was youth football. You know, you can't you
- 38:42Speaker 4: can't say, Man, I'm in the NFL. I'm running on
- 38:45Speaker 4: the field and I'm thinking, man, this is my first time.
- 38:48Speaker 4: Imagine the first time you're running on a game field
- 38:51Speaker 4: in a game situation, and you're in the NFL, and
- 38:57Speaker 4: you were running out there, and and lo and behold,
- 39:00Speaker 4: you got a Hall of Fame receiver that that's across
- 39:03Speaker 4: from you, that you you might have grown up with.
- 39:08Speaker 4: You know, you may have seen him when he you know,
- 39:11Speaker 4: Sammy White was there and and and Sammy White was
- 39:15Speaker 4: a great Viking receiver, a great NFL receiver. And I
- 39:22Speaker 4: knew who he was from as a kid. I knew
- 39:25Speaker 4: who he was. He ran and his best route was
- 39:28Speaker 4: a post corner, and he run he ran a post
- 39:31Speaker 4: corner on me year three, maybe because I think it
- 39:38Speaker 4: was like right at his last season and Hollis, I'm
- 39:42Speaker 4: still running to the post. I'm still running to the
- 39:45Speaker 4: he killed me. I mean for me to have made
- 39:49Speaker 4: a turn back to the get to the corner. I'm
- 39:52Speaker 4: tearing my knee, ankle, everything out. That's how bad it was.
- 39:57Speaker 4: Luckily it wasn't year one, but you know it was.
- 40:03Speaker 4: It's crazy because when you think about playing that's your goal,
- 40:12Speaker 4: and when you get there, you just don't understand.
- 40:15Speaker 2: You know, Tommy Kramer is the quarterback, you know, and
- 40:21Speaker 2: you're thinking, man, I remember, I remember him, you.
- 40:24Speaker 4: Know, and you're trying, You're trying not to You're like, Okay,
- 40:28Speaker 4: that's Tommy Kramer. Okay, So you know I'm caraling. You know,
- 40:32Speaker 4: you have to find a way to get there because
- 40:35Speaker 4: if you don't, you're gonna struggle.
- 40:38Speaker 2: So let me ask you this. Okay.
- 40:39Speaker 5: So I think kind of what we are, what you've
- 40:42Speaker 5: articulated is maybe from a younger player standpoint.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Going through camping, different things like that nature.
- 40:48Speaker 5: So when you're in let's say years ten, year eleven,
- 40:52Speaker 5: you're maybe New Orleans, how is that training camp experience,
- 40:57Speaker 5: It's just like, oh God, let's get this other with absolutely.
- 41:00Speaker 2: When I when I got to when I got.
- 41:02Speaker 4: To New Orleans, I was released from the Vikings and
- 41:06Speaker 4: I got to New Orleans, I couldn't even like camp
- 41:13Speaker 4: was like I already know camp. I already know what
- 41:16Speaker 4: this is gonna be. Now I don't know how much
- 41:18Speaker 4: we're gonna run. It's a different coach and blah blah
- 41:20Speaker 4: blah blah. I got a new position. Coach, I got
- 41:22Speaker 4: a new coordinator, got a new head coach. I got
- 41:26Speaker 4: all these guys that I don't know. I may have
- 41:29Speaker 4: heard their name.
- 41:30Speaker 5: But and you can argue that you've probably experienced that
- 41:32Speaker 5: before when you were at the Vikings.
- 41:33Speaker 2: You have multiple coaches and this, yes, I had, I
- 41:36Speaker 2: had changed coaches. I had I had, so.
- 41:39Speaker 5: Even that wasn't necessarily new. That wasn't necessarily new. You're
- 41:42Speaker 5: just in the New Orleans heating now.
- 41:44Speaker 4: But I'm in the New Orleans heat and and you know,
- 41:49Speaker 4: and I'm thinking to myself, like, okay, I'm not coming
- 41:52Speaker 4: here and not playing. So now I'm I'm I'm picking, like, Okay,
- 41:57Speaker 4: I gotta get his I gotta get I gotta get
- 41:59Speaker 4: that corners job.
- 42:00Speaker 2: And I'm hoping that they didn't.
- 42:02Speaker 4: They didn't pick me, get me off with waivers and
- 42:06Speaker 4: and think that I'm want to be a backup, you know,
- 42:10Speaker 4: because I had I was guaranteed to have that season.
- 42:13Speaker 4: So that was the that was one of the deals
- 42:15Speaker 4: that I got cut that I wanted to be. You know,
- 42:18Speaker 4: I didn't want to come to a place that you
- 42:20Speaker 4: were going to turn around, try to play, see if
- 42:24Speaker 4: I fit, see if I can still play, and then
- 42:26Speaker 4: you're gonna cut me. So you either had to bring
- 42:28Speaker 4: me in and keep me for the year, or I'm
- 42:33Speaker 4: not coming. And I even turned Pete Pete Carroll down
- 42:37Speaker 4: in San Francisco because he because he couldn't give it
- 42:40Speaker 4: to me. He couldn't give it to me. And and
- 42:42Speaker 4: he already had that's ninety four, That's that's super Bowl.
- 42:46Speaker 2: That's ninety four.
- 42:48Speaker 4: And I was like, I'm not you know, I'm not
- 42:51Speaker 4: going there to get cut. You know, they had some
- 42:52Speaker 4: young guys that were that were that were pretty good.
- 42:55Speaker 4: And I'm thinking to myself, Okay, you know, I'm not
- 42:59Speaker 4: questioning whether or not I can beat him out. I
- 43:01Speaker 4: don't think Pete wants me for that. I think he
- 43:03Speaker 4: wants me for nickel and dime. You know, which is
- 43:05Speaker 4: the extra you know, when you go to five dbs
- 43:07Speaker 4: or six dbs, it's dime and five.
- 43:10Speaker 2: You know, his nickels.
- 43:11Speaker 4: So I'm like thinking, he's trying to put me because
- 43:15Speaker 4: I could play in the middle.
- 43:16Speaker 2: That's where I played with him. I played inside, So
- 43:19Speaker 2: he kind of wanted you as a specialist.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Yeah, every day, and and I'm gonna be sitting there
- 43:23Speaker 4: for the rest of the game.
- 43:25Speaker 2: And I'm like, no, I don't think you know. I
- 43:28Speaker 2: don't want to.
- 43:28Speaker 5: Look at that, like, well maybe if he if he
- 43:31Speaker 5: has me here and I'm specialists, I'm not playing every dawn.
- 43:34Speaker 5: Maybe the career lasts for maybe two, three, four, maybe
- 43:37Speaker 5: five more years.
- 43:39Speaker 4: No, I didn't think no, no, because I knew.
- 43:43Speaker 2: I knew. Well, I won't say that I knew, but
- 43:48Speaker 2: I knew.
- 43:48Speaker 4: I knew I was at the end because I had
- 43:50Speaker 4: had I had had a lot of years in and
- 43:52Speaker 4: I played and literally my entire career with the Vikers,
- 43:57Speaker 4: I was on the field, and yeah, you didn't have
- 44:02Speaker 4: I didn't have a year where I played like part time,
- 44:04Speaker 4: you know. I played full time my entire career there.
- 44:08Speaker 4: And I just I just I wasn't willing to and
- 44:13Speaker 4: I didn't want to sit, and I didn't want to
- 44:16Speaker 4: and and again I got when I and I think
- 44:18Speaker 4: I've told you this, and I don't know if I've
- 44:19Speaker 4: said it on air, but when I was playing for
- 44:23Speaker 4: the Saints and we were we were in the game,
- 44:25Speaker 4: and again I think it might have been Denver, but
- 44:30Speaker 4: a guy ran a crow route. I knew Hollis. I
- 44:32Speaker 4: knew it like the receiver knew it. I knew it,
- 44:36Speaker 4: like the quarterback knew it. And I'm thinking, oh, this
- 44:39Speaker 4: is gonna be my first pick. And if I get
- 44:41Speaker 4: if I get in on the curl, that's that's the
- 44:43Speaker 4: chance that's a pick sick. So this is this, this
- 44:47Speaker 4: is getting ready to be this big play. And man,
- 44:52Speaker 4: I next thing I realized, I'm lying. I'm laying down
- 44:54Speaker 4: on the ground where I had tackled him and didn't
- 44:57Speaker 4: even touch the ball.
- 44:59Speaker 2: And I said to my myself, Oh, something's wrong.
- 45:03Speaker 4: I knew because and I knew, and you know that's
- 45:06Speaker 4: something that you you know, nobody else knows. That's like, Okay,
- 45:09Speaker 4: they threw a curl, he made a tackle. No big
- 45:11Speaker 4: deal for me. I knew it from the snap and
- 45:15Speaker 4: I couldn't get there. And it's not like I swipt,
- 45:19Speaker 4: It's not like anything any any anything that I could
- 45:23Speaker 4: have come up with to make it an excuse would
- 45:26Speaker 4: not fit.
- 45:28Speaker 2: And I was like, I'm done.
- 45:30Speaker 5: So so let me ask you. You's going back to the
- 45:32Speaker 5: training camp. Just how that led last year, maybe the
- 45:35Speaker 5: last two years. How was the training camp experienced different?
- 45:38Speaker 5: Was it just like how was it?
- 45:40Speaker 2: It was?
- 45:41Speaker 4: It was being with the Saints and and they had
- 45:44Speaker 4: a bunch of young guys and even their coach.
- 45:49Speaker 2: Jim Jim Jim Moore junior.
- 45:53Speaker 4: He was it was his first year coaching DB's for
- 45:55Speaker 4: his dad, so he was just getting started.
- 45:59Speaker 2: And so I'm older than him, you know what I'm saying.
- 46:03Speaker 2: And I don't believe he wasn't an NFL guy. No, no,
- 46:06Speaker 2: not at all.
- 46:07Speaker 4: And so so Dad was bringing him on and trying
- 46:11Speaker 4: to get him adjusted, and like he would, you know,
- 46:13Speaker 4: and and I don't mind this, but he'd be like.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Did I say that right?
- 46:17Speaker 4: You know?
- 46:18Speaker 2: Is that? You know?
- 46:19Speaker 4: Because he's thinking, like I'm this veteran, he's kind of
- 46:23Speaker 4: leaning on me, and I'm like, no, I'm not used
- 46:27Speaker 4: to that. You the coach tell me what to do?
- 46:30Speaker 4: You know, I don't want, you know. And it wasn't
- 46:32Speaker 4: like I didn't want to help him. It was like
- 46:34Speaker 4: I was confused with it because I had never I
- 46:37Speaker 4: had never experienced this situation. I wasn't happy about it anyway.
- 46:42Speaker 4: Like I said, I wondered I was gonna that was
- 46:44Speaker 4: gonna be my last year with the Vikings. That's the
- 46:46Speaker 4: year I went to the Saints. That was going to
- 46:48Speaker 4: be my last year. I was going to retire after that.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Because I remember telling me you want to retire.
- 46:51Speaker 4: I wanted to retire as a viking, and so you know,
- 46:55Speaker 4: everything about everything about that situation was was really like no,
- 47:02Speaker 4: no good for me. I wasn't I wasn't happy. I
- 47:06Speaker 4: was It's like doing something that you really don't want
- 47:10Speaker 4: to do and you got to do it at a
- 47:12Speaker 4: high level. I'm trying to I'm trying to convince myself
- 47:16Speaker 4: to you know, every game, to play hard. And you know,
- 47:20Speaker 4: I had a little, I had a little had a
- 47:23Speaker 4: strained a hip flexer.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Those are the most annoying.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Yes, yes, and and you know when and I'm thinking
- 47:32Speaker 4: to myself, man, maybe I need to milk this.
- 47:36Speaker 5: And that's and that's funny because I think that oftentimes
- 47:40Speaker 5: we don't think if professional athletes having that sort of mindset.
- 47:44Speaker 5: We don't think of them like like needing to draw motivation.
- 47:48Speaker 5: But I think that's maybe pervasive just in all in everything,
- 47:52Speaker 5: you know, whether it's we marriage, whether it's your professional crib,
- 47:55Speaker 5: no matter how it is.
- 47:57Speaker 4: We were three and thirteen in Minnesota, my second year
- 48:00Speaker 4: with less Steckel. I'm telling you now, there were a
- 48:03Speaker 4: ton of guys who came out missed numbers of games
- 48:09Speaker 4: solely because they were injured. And I'm making the case
- 48:13Speaker 4: that they were milking those injuries because it was just
- 48:16Speaker 4: we were we were you know, we just weren't good
- 48:19Speaker 4: and we're not going nowhere, you know.
- 48:21Speaker 2: And and and between the three games they was like.
- 48:25Speaker 4: Early middle, it was like it wasn't like we got
- 48:29Speaker 4: we ain't have no stretch of wins.
- 48:31Speaker 2: They were all stretches of losses. And so you you
- 48:34Speaker 2: ain't trying to get back in there. You don't want
- 48:36Speaker 2: to be part of that.
- 48:37Speaker 5: And see that's crazy because like we don't think of
- 48:39Speaker 5: it like that. I mean, I think if you play
- 48:41Speaker 5: sports at any level, we all know that guy, right,
- 48:43Speaker 5: we all know them guys or girls who just they're
- 48:45Speaker 5: gonna milk it. They're gonna kind of lay back with
- 48:47Speaker 5: things are going good, or front runners. But we don't
- 48:50Speaker 5: necessarily think of professional athletes in that sort.
- 48:52Speaker 4: Of There are guys that there are, There are there
- 48:54Speaker 4: are players, legit players who will milk training camp for
- 49:00Speaker 4: whatever reason. You know, I got a little little tweak
- 49:03Speaker 4: in my in my hip, I got a little tweak
- 49:05Speaker 4: in my calf.
- 49:07Speaker 2: A little issue with my shoulder.
- 49:09Speaker 5: And brother they gonna sit out and that's and what's
- 49:12Speaker 5: crazy to me, Like because I've I've known those type
- 49:16Speaker 5: of guys.
- 49:17Speaker 2: They'll milk it.
- 49:18Speaker 5: They'll mike the two a days, maybe practice one week,
- 49:21Speaker 5: they're off for two weeks, you know, whatever it is.
- 49:24Speaker 5: But it's some guys that can do that, to sit
- 49:26Speaker 5: around kind of piddle around, and then they'll just come
- 49:29Speaker 5: out and ball.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Like I've always kind.
- 49:31Speaker 5: Of been envious of that guy who can do that
- 49:33Speaker 5: because I'm not that guy like I have. I need
- 49:35Speaker 5: all the practices, all the mental work I can get.
- 49:38Speaker 4: And Okay, so now as a coach, Okay, now, as
- 49:41Speaker 4: a coach to you, I don't think that's true about you.
- 49:48Speaker 4: I don't as being able to have coached you, I
- 49:50Speaker 4: don't think that that's true about you. I think your
- 49:53Speaker 4: issue was you were not dedicated to football as much
- 49:59Speaker 4: as you were.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Success you you were looking to be.
- 50:03Speaker 4: You wanted to be somebody you you were academically you were,
- 50:06Speaker 4: you knew you were solid, you knew you wanted something.
- 50:09Speaker 4: So what was competing against you on the football field?
- 50:13Speaker 4: Was you being the person that you became. Maybe there's
- 50:18Speaker 4: no there's no question because if you the dude who
- 50:25Speaker 4: wants to wants to get somewhere on it, wants it
- 50:27Speaker 4: to take him somewhere. Right, you playing hurt, you know,
- 50:31Speaker 4: I mean I played hurt a ton of times.
- 50:33Speaker 5: But but I'll say this though, I think what I what,
- 50:37Speaker 5: what I didn't understand is that And it's funny and
- 50:41Speaker 5: I would even say this the same way I took
- 50:43Speaker 5: the classrooms the same way I needed to take the
- 50:45Speaker 5: field as far as I needed to have like the
- 50:48Speaker 5: study portion of it, like I needed to like almost
- 50:51Speaker 5: be in a football library and to study it at
- 50:55Speaker 5: nauseum because I think that's where like my understanding comes from.
- 50:58Speaker 5: Like like you said, you understand it's gonna come from
- 51:00Speaker 5: but on the field. If I can get it like
- 51:03Speaker 5: mentally first and then I could practice it, then it comes.
- 51:07Speaker 5: Just like Chris Branda, he taught me kind of the
- 51:09Speaker 5: nuances of throwing. He gave me a book. I read
- 51:11Speaker 5: the book. He literally gave me a book by Phil Simms,
- 51:16Speaker 5: who's like just throwing you the basic mechanics of throwing.
- 51:19Speaker 5: I read the whole book multiple times, and then I
- 51:22Speaker 5: was able to practice it. So that's kind of where
- 51:25Speaker 5: and and and and you know, and and I'll and
- 51:28Speaker 5: I'll say this, I don't then, I don't think I
- 51:30Speaker 5: understood how to study football.
- 51:34Speaker 4: And again I'm staying at the coach and you're the
- 51:36Speaker 4: and you're my player now, and I'm gonna take Chris.
- 51:40Speaker 4: Chris did have he he did do some studying. He
- 51:44Speaker 4: kind of didn't know kind of a little bit more
- 51:47Speaker 4: than but he didn't have He didn't have the size
- 51:50Speaker 4: and all of the things that you had. And that's
- 51:53Speaker 4: and you you were set up to.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Be able to really be a really good quarter, That's
- 52:01Speaker 2: what and that's what hurts me.
- 52:03Speaker 4: Yeah, because because part of all of the all of
- 52:06Speaker 4: the knowledge stuff that you've learned from from through the
- 52:10Speaker 4: political realm, through through your life that you went in
- 52:14Speaker 4: and studied and learned it. You know, the rules, the law,
- 52:17Speaker 4: all this kind of stuff, if you have put just
- 52:21Speaker 4: a quarter of that in the football.
- 52:24Speaker 2: And and and.
- 52:26Speaker 4: I mean because think about think about what you know
- 52:28Speaker 4: about cover two, cover three, cover four. Now it's like
- 52:32Speaker 4: you know that kind of stuff. It's like what I
- 52:36Speaker 4: should be able to throw in the hole on any
- 52:38Speaker 4: one of those any one of those coverages.
- 52:40Speaker 2: I actually know what to do when you whatever coverage
- 52:42Speaker 2: you get me.
- 52:43Speaker 5: And it was crazy is this weekend. It's funny, like
- 52:46Speaker 5: I thought popped them. I remember Mike Mayer was our
- 52:50Speaker 5: Mike Mayor. He was a safety of West Virginia State.
- 52:52Speaker 5: He was an All American. He was a really high
- 52:55Speaker 5: level player, and I remember he was staying here for
- 52:58Speaker 5: the summer where as state practicing, and we're just kind
- 53:01Speaker 5: of I mean, not him, but us, We're kind of
- 53:04Speaker 5: just kind of we're there, but we just want to
- 53:06Speaker 5: feel throwing. It's kind of lillygagging around, but we're like, yeah,
- 53:12Speaker 5: we're there, you know what I'm saying. But it wasn't
- 53:14Speaker 5: necessarily very intense, right man. He rips into me, He
- 53:18Speaker 5: rips into me.
- 53:19Speaker 2: I mean, just rips. Don't you want to be great?
- 53:21Speaker 2: Da da da da? Just rips into me.
- 53:23Speaker 5: And at the time I was just like, man, Mike, yeah, chilloud,
- 53:27Speaker 5: you're always intense. You know what I'm saying. I'm just
- 53:29Speaker 5: kind of playing them off. But I don't think what
- 53:32Speaker 5: I understood. I don't think I understood what he was
- 53:35Speaker 5: actually trying to say. And you know, we're young, so
- 53:37Speaker 5: he didn't necessarily articulate it. But what he was trying
- 53:39Speaker 5: to say was to your point, And I just say like,
- 53:42Speaker 5: you know, if you have that opportunity, Like I always
- 53:45Speaker 5: tell kids, if you have the opportunity to play, just
- 53:47Speaker 5: go ahead and max it out. Like I said, I
- 53:49Speaker 5: was a six three, two thirty quarterback. I'm I'm I'm
- 53:53Speaker 5: entering camping two thirty losing twenty pounds, you know what
- 53:57Speaker 5: I'm saying. After camp, So and I was, you know,
- 53:59Speaker 5: I was to take hits, and it was just you know,
- 54:01Speaker 5: I was never a guy that was hurt often, so
- 54:04Speaker 5: it's just you know, and then.
- 54:05Speaker 4: I'm I'm going into I'm going into college. I graduated
- 54:09Speaker 4: high school fifty five at sixty four, and and and
- 54:17Speaker 4: everything under the sun, everything everything, because I knew what
- 54:21Speaker 4: I wanted, and I knew that I had to get bigger.
- 54:24Speaker 2: I knew I had to get stronger. I knew I
- 54:25Speaker 2: had to get faster.
- 54:26Speaker 4: And and I didn't have the see I put football
- 54:31Speaker 4: on on on the only burner right, Academics were not
- 54:36Speaker 4: on the burner for me. I had to get readjusted
- 54:39Speaker 4: into into making sure taking care of the academic piece
- 54:42Speaker 4: because I was so locked into football.
- 54:45Speaker 2: And I'm one step away.
- 54:46Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's and I always tell kids, that's not
- 54:48Speaker 5: I don't ever tell kids, have a plan, a play
- 54:50Speaker 5: and b whatever like that. Get locked into you what
- 54:53Speaker 5: you want to do. I mean, have other interests, but
- 54:55Speaker 5: be focused because to your point, you know, if you
- 54:58Speaker 5: look at your football career, you you were able to
- 55:00Speaker 5: max it out to go to the highest level. You
- 55:02Speaker 5: were able to coach, you were able to have a
- 55:04Speaker 5: career at state, and you have a career based off
- 55:06Speaker 5: of ATHLETs what you're doing now, and speaking of that nothing,
- 55:10Speaker 5: I don't know how much. I don't know how much
- 55:12Speaker 5: time we got left, but I want to talk about
- 55:15Speaker 5: because we both are fans of the Olympics, yes, and
- 55:18Speaker 5: we both are fans of rugby.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Seven's to me.
- 55:22Speaker 5: Like that is my that's my probably hand besides track
- 55:25Speaker 5: and field, which we'll talk about later as it comes up,
- 55:28Speaker 5: but that's probably my favorite Olympics sport. And I don't know,
- 55:31Speaker 5: if you watched the women's it was it's phenomenal.
- 55:35Speaker 2: Listen, I don't know. I'm not one hundred percent sure that.
- 55:41Speaker 4: That that There are some there are some dudes who
- 55:43Speaker 4: I know I played ball with. Better not get out
- 55:47Speaker 4: there with them. It was because they're not playing. Yeah,
- 55:50Speaker 4: I mean, I mean that thing is physical, physical. I
- 55:56Speaker 4: mean you know, and you say, oh, well it's just
- 55:57Speaker 4: a girl. Okay. They get out there and get hit
- 56:02Speaker 4: and you ain't got no pads on nothing, You ain't
- 56:04Speaker 4: got nothing on it.
- 56:05Speaker 2: So you basically playing sandlots handlfe for that. And it
- 56:08Speaker 2: seemed to me.
- 56:09Speaker 5: And even if you watch the guys, because the guys
- 56:11Speaker 5: had the rugby seven, I think the US was in
- 56:13Speaker 5: the I want to say they were in the Bronze.
- 56:15Speaker 5: They were kind of in the hub, but we didn't
- 56:17Speaker 5: make it. And it's just such a great sport. And
- 56:21Speaker 5: why I love it so much is because it's it's
- 56:24Speaker 5: what we did as kids, essentially really structured in rules. Yes,
- 56:28Speaker 5: and I think I think somebody I would love to
- 56:32Speaker 5: see a rugby seven league in the United States because
- 56:35Speaker 5: I think for a lot of our D two players,
- 56:38Speaker 5: a lot of our players who don't make the NFL
- 56:40Speaker 5: or don't make you know, Canada, that would be a
- 56:43Speaker 5: great alternative for them to start playing.
- 56:45Speaker 4: But think about it, Okay, those guys know that they're
- 56:51Speaker 4: gonna have gear on. Yeah, everybody who plays football with
- 56:56Speaker 4: gear on can't necessarily play it with no gear on.
- 57:00Speaker 2: I mean that's true, that's true. You know that's true.
- 57:02Speaker 2: I'm not saying everybody.
- 57:03Speaker 5: I'm just saying it's all because if we grew up
- 57:05Speaker 5: playing rugby slipping the sense, yes we did, you know
- 57:08Speaker 5: what I mean. I mean we grew up playing tackle football, which,
- 57:11Speaker 5: now that I think about it, I mean, if I
- 57:12Speaker 5: have a son, I was like, you're a grandson for you.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Hey dad, Hey grand dad, I'm going to play tackle
- 57:17Speaker 2: with the guy. No, you know what I'm saying, And
- 57:20Speaker 2: that's crazy. You would even say no? Yeah, I would.
- 57:22Speaker 4: I would definitely say no because now I understand the
- 57:26Speaker 4: reality of it. But back then when I was doing it.
- 57:28Speaker 4: But again, but even with that, it's no head to head.
- 57:31Speaker 4: It's it's it's safer in some aspect because you're not
- 57:34Speaker 4: necessarily leaving leading with your head.
- 57:36Speaker 2: But but but but that head's vulnerable still. I mean,
- 57:39Speaker 2: it's all vulnerable. Yeah, Like I said, they ain't playing out.
- 57:42Speaker 4: I watched it and I was like, and they're and
- 57:44Speaker 4: they're grabbing each other and they're like taking him down
- 57:47Speaker 4: and pulling at the ball, and I'm like, man, did
- 57:50Speaker 4: you see like the last run of game winning like
- 57:53Speaker 4: they call it a tuddy she broke she breaks the tackle.
- 57:56Speaker 5: The wolfan I don't know her name, woman from the US.
- 57:59Speaker 5: She breaks tackle, she basically runs the length of the field,
- 58:02Speaker 5: scores with.
- 58:03Speaker 2: No time on the flock. Yes, just like man, that's like,
- 58:06Speaker 2: that's one of the greatest that you never and you
- 58:10Speaker 2: never forget that.
- 58:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's gonna be one of those things when
- 58:13Speaker 4: you talk about rugby.
- 58:14Speaker 2: That's that's the video you gonna see.
- 58:16Speaker 5: And that's and again, we gotta make this rugby the
- 58:19Speaker 5: fifteens and you got the elevens and need the rugby seven.
- 58:21Speaker 5: Is what I'm talking about is rugby. What we're discussing
- 58:24Speaker 5: is rugby seventh. I think that's the sport that I
- 58:27Speaker 5: can see that could translate to an American audience. In addition,
- 58:31Speaker 5: I watched them swimming. I watched the women's the gymnastics.
- 58:37Speaker 4: Oh my god, the athleticism, the strength bro is I mean,
- 58:45Speaker 4: it's it's crazy. If I could even do the twist
- 58:49Speaker 4: and spin.
- 58:50Speaker 2: But I'm not.
- 58:51Speaker 4: I'm not landing. I'm not landing. I'm gonna it's gonna
- 58:55Speaker 4: be terrible. And what I'm looking at the US, I'm
- 58:58Speaker 4: just looking.
- 58:58Speaker 2: At the whole squad is bad. Man.
- 59:01Speaker 5: The man I was looking at like the balance beam.
- 59:04Speaker 5: I'm looking at the little horse thing. I'm looking at
- 59:07Speaker 5: the vault.
- 59:08Speaker 2: I'm just like.
- 59:08Speaker 5: These women, all of them, and even the even the men,
- 59:12Speaker 5: the men one bronze, the brother, the brother, the young
- 59:16Speaker 5: brother who's, like I said, the first brother, I think
- 59:19Speaker 5: that I can remember, and he's and he does this
- 59:21Speaker 5: thing on social media. And again he's just breaking so
- 59:24Speaker 5: many barriers. And I would just like to see, you know,
- 59:28Speaker 5: us have more diversity in the sports that we choose.
- 59:31Speaker 5: Like again, I understand us barriers and everything like that,
- 59:33Speaker 5: but I mean to see those ladies, to see those men,
- 59:37Speaker 5: just to man, that's just it was a great feeling.
- 59:39Speaker 2: I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna I'm gonna say this
- 59:44Speaker 2: and and and.
- 59:45Speaker 4: I'm gonna make the case that it's wrong. But men's gymnastics. See,
- 59:52Speaker 4: I don't see the kid that's sitting at home maybe
- 59:55Speaker 4: watching that and thinking that they wanted that that's the
- 59:58Speaker 4: sport they want to play.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: I think they should. I think they should, but I
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: don't know if they think.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: That because you know, because I'm not sure how I
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: would have responded to my son saying he wanted to
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: play he wanted to do gymnastics, you know, I'm like,
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: what do you mean is there even a guy gymnastics program?
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: Like where are you gonna do that at? But I
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: mean when you see those dudes, I mean, you can't.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: You can't take away the athleticism. You can't take the strength,
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: the just the artistic piece of it is absolutely amazing.
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: And I say, like the body control. I was talking
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: to a friend of mine and he has little kids.
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: He's started mind on sports. I was like, man, if
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: I had if I had kids, or if not, if
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: I had boys, or if I just said, if my
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: daughters were serious about sports and really want to do it,
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: I'm like, we're gonna do gymnastics a soccer first. We're
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: gonna learn your body control so that way you can
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: because every like the most athletic guys that I just
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: know on the street, they can do all types of
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: flips in all sort and we look at and like, man,
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: that's crazy, how'd you do that?
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Such body control? Right?
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: So okay, if you if okay, if you said you
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: had a son and you would you would you would
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: put him in gymnastics?
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: What would you be trying to get for him?
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: I want to I want to build because when I
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: think about building. I wouldn't necessarily think about building a football, basketball,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: soccer player.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: I want to build an athlete.
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: So and I think there's no better place to start
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: them than gymnastics, because if you can have control of
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: your body at mid air, you can get front flips, backflips,
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: you can hoist yourself up without necessarily you know what
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: I'm saying, without some like the rings, without names, necessarily
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: thinking about what you're doing. Right, it's guys in the
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: gym we've been lifting waist their whole life. I mean,
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: we've been working.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Out a whole life. I can't do that, you know
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: So I'm thinking about just trying to build like that,
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: just elite athleticism. Then once you have that elite athletis,
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: if you want to continue to find if we want
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: to go somewhere else, fine, because it can.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: It can translate to anything.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: All right, Well, ladies and gentlemen, we are running a
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: little bit over today, but great show, Hollis.
