- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:03Speaker 1: He war the cable Guy and you're listening to tech
- 0:06Speaker 1: CRD Radio. Welcome to another episode of tech Talk Radio.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm a D.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Taylor, I'm sir, I'm Matt Jones.
- 0:14Speaker 1: And I'm justin lem me. Holy cow, we got the
- 0:17Speaker 1: whole crew. Yeah, well you you've been out sick. You
- 0:19Speaker 1: you feeling better? Yeah, I'm feeling better. But my voice
- 0:22Speaker 1: isn't you sound okay? You were saying that earlier and
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'm thinking you sound right, you don't sound yeah, No,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I still got I still got. I still don't feel
- 0:29Speaker 1: like I'm like the voice is fully back right now.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And you went to a comedy show and got everybody
- 0:34Speaker 1: in the audience sick. You did that, of course, got
- 0:37Speaker 1: them all infected with the RONA. It was great. Well no, no,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I went to uh yeah, it was just a it
- 0:41Speaker 1: was a comedy show. This it's just a I mean
- 0:44Speaker 1: he's somewhat famous, I guess. I mean he's on Facebook.
- 0:48Speaker 1: He does a lot of dry bar comedy, which they
- 0:51Speaker 1: have a pretty big YouTube channel. The guy's name is
- 0:53Speaker 1: Rodney Norman. All Right. He's very very unique in his
- 0:57Speaker 1: appearance because he looks like a hobo. Yeah, literally, like
- 1:01Speaker 1: a homeless hobo. But he's a really really nice guy.
- 1:05Speaker 1: He's really funny. But uh yeah. The show was at
- 1:09Speaker 1: Bruce Bears, you know the brewery that's in our neighborhood,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but it was actually at their other location downtown. I
- 1:13Speaker 1: went down there with a friend and we got there
- 1:15Speaker 1: before the show and I just I got to meet
- 1:17Speaker 1: the guy, you know, Rodney, and I was like, wow,
- 1:19Speaker 1: you know, I've been following you for a while. I
- 1:21Speaker 1: love your I love your comedy. And it was a
- 1:23Speaker 1: very small show, maybe twenty twenty five people maybe the most,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but I did mention to him. I said, hey, I'm
- 1:28Speaker 1: just gonna throw this out there. I was, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm a former radio DJ and I you know, do
- 1:33Speaker 1: a lot of voiceover work and things like that. I
- 1:35Speaker 1: was wondering, maybe could I introduce you? Oh wow? And
- 1:38Speaker 1: he's like, actually, yeah, that'd be great because you know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: all comedians get introduced and I didn't have anybody introduced me.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And I was like, oh my god, that oh this
- 1:46Speaker 1: is gonna be cool. Oh wow. You know, I kind
- 1:48Speaker 1: of came up with a little script and it was
- 1:50Speaker 1: funny because I ran it by him, and he's like,
- 1:51Speaker 1: oh my god, he goes, and you don't. I'll tell
- 1:54Speaker 1: you what. I'll tell you what I said. But he
- 1:56Speaker 1: told me. He goes, you don't do stand up comedy.
- 1:59Speaker 1: He goes, you you really should do stand up comedy
- 2:01Speaker 1: because you're actually kind of funny. But basically what I
- 2:03Speaker 1: said was, thanks for coming out tonight for the comedy show.
- 2:06Speaker 1: We're here to see a very funny gentleman. He's been
- 2:08Speaker 1: doing comedy for twenty seven years, and if you don't
- 2:11Speaker 1: know who he is, it's kind of weird that you're
- 2:13Speaker 1: actually here right now, but you've seen him on Drybar
- 2:17Speaker 1: Comedy and it finally it took COVID for people to
- 2:21Speaker 1: finally find him funny. Give it up for Rodney Norman, right,
- 2:24Speaker 1: And everybody just kind of laughed and applauded at that.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And then I messaged Rodney the next day on Facebook
- 2:30Speaker 1: and he goes, I really truly believe that you should
- 2:33Speaker 1: be in stand up comedy. Well, and I said, I
- 2:36Speaker 1: was like, I don't understand because I don't have material,
- 2:39Speaker 1: And he told me. He told me something that would
- 2:41Speaker 1: really actually hit home to me because I sat back
- 2:43Speaker 1: and I thought about it. He said It was so
- 2:46Speaker 1: simple too, as most good advice is. He said, right,
- 2:50Speaker 1: the truth and the jokes will find themselves. It's true. Yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 1: that's true. That's kind of cool because you also had Brad.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember Brad. You got a photo with
- 3:00Speaker 1: him and yeah, Brad, Brad Williams william I went to
- 3:03Speaker 1: that show.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah that was that was an amazing show. And you know,
- 3:07Speaker 3: shout out to shout out to Brad. We all still
- 3:10Speaker 3: hate Karen. I actually Carol Carol, Yes, we hate well,
- 3:16Speaker 3: we hate Karen's too, but Carol, we hate Carol. I
- 3:19Speaker 3: actually still have the sticker that he the autographed for
- 3:23Speaker 3: me and the guy who opened for him. He had
- 3:26Speaker 3: an opener, but I have I have his shirt that
- 3:29Speaker 3: I bought it for Lee and I and I still
- 3:31Speaker 3: wear and it says I like your dogs more than you.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Oh So if you ever follow, just look up Rodney
- 3:36Speaker 1: Norman on Facebook because he'll do these things where he'll
- 3:39Speaker 1: just go live on Facebook for like thirty seconds and
- 3:41Speaker 1: he'll be like, Okay, so you survived until today, So
- 3:45Speaker 1: you got that going for you. So yeah, have a
- 3:48Speaker 1: super fn awesome day. Bye. And that's that's that's it.
- 3:51Speaker 1: That's it, that's all he says. I think you look
- 3:53Speaker 1: at some of the comics that are out there now
- 3:55Speaker 1: and there there are more comics that we're seeing and
- 3:58Speaker 1: getting a chance to Hear's the I think they're getting
- 4:00Speaker 1: their day because of you too, and Instagram reels and
- 4:04Speaker 1: TikTok and TikTok, because a lot of them you may
- 4:07Speaker 1: not ever hear from you're suddenly getting access to. There's
- 4:10Speaker 1: one guy that I saw and I think he's on
- 4:12Speaker 1: dry bar as well. He's got to be I swear
- 4:15Speaker 1: he's got to be in his mid eighties and he
- 4:18Speaker 1: does his jokes all based around I know, yes, I
- 4:21Speaker 1: think I know you're talking about. He does his jokes
- 4:23Speaker 1: all based around being, you know, an older gentleman, and
- 4:27Speaker 1: boy is he funny. He is, and he just that's
- 4:29Speaker 1: all he does, is, like you said, talks about real
- 4:31Speaker 1: life and the jokes follow and it just it just
- 4:34Speaker 1: comes along. But yeah, I can't remember that guy's name,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but I know exactly what you're talking about. Very he's
- 4:38Speaker 1: very old. He's an older gentleman, very rail looking. Yep. Yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 1: but he is hilarious. Yeah, there's one comic that I
- 4:45Speaker 1: wish was still with us that is no longer with us.
- 4:48Speaker 1: That I think was a master at what he did,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and if he would have lived a little longer, I
- 4:53Speaker 1: think he would just be been huge. Mitch Hedberg, Oh
- 4:57Speaker 1: oh yeah. I actually compare Rodney to a little bit
- 5:02Speaker 1: of like a Mitch Hedburg style of comedy because he
- 5:05Speaker 1: doesn't quite do just one liners, but his jokes are
- 5:07Speaker 1: very short. Yeah yeah, I Matt remembers Mitch Hedburg as well. Yeah,
- 5:12Speaker 1: oh yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And I agree like entirely that it's it's definitely social
- 5:16Speaker 3: media and you know, easy access to short form entertainment
- 5:19Speaker 3: that's giving all these people a leg up. Like just
- 5:22Speaker 3: look at a Jeff Rcooney, Like he started out just
- 5:25Speaker 3: posting stuff.
- 5:26Speaker 1: On r slash.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Stand up, He's got his own subreddit. He's a big
- 5:29Speaker 3: name now like that that launched him to it. I
- 5:33Speaker 3: remember being in like high school and the way you've
- 5:35Speaker 3: discovered a new comics. Somebody brought in a CD on
- 5:38Speaker 3: some trip where you're on the bus for.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Saint Cook's Yeah Cook, Yeah, what happened to Dame Cook Curry?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Jeff Arcurry actually just came to Denver about five months ago,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and I was looking at going to his show until
- 5:50Speaker 1: I saw the ticket prices. Yeah, has a gun up
- 5:52Speaker 1: three and fifty dollars a ticket for a stand up show? Really,
- 5:56Speaker 1: that's how bad guy he's gotten.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Good lord, Yeah, Now, I mean one of the one
- 6:01Speaker 3: of like the foundational stand up voices from like me
- 6:04Speaker 3: growing up, you had the the blue collar guys. And
- 6:08Speaker 3: I remember listening to Billing Vall when I was Billing
- 6:11Speaker 3: Vale when I was younger, with the here's your sign,
- 6:13Speaker 3: And I just recently read that he decided to retire
- 6:18Speaker 3: because he was like, I'm I am a name synonymous
- 6:22Speaker 3: with stand up comedy, Like I don't have to do
- 6:25Speaker 3: this anymore.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And then I was like, dude, you got more years
- 6:28Speaker 2: left in you.
- 6:28Speaker 3: And I looked up his age and I was like,
- 6:30Speaker 3: oh god, time passes really quickly.
- 6:33Speaker 1: You know what, he's like sixty five now or something. Yeah,
- 6:36Speaker 1: I just thought of I would pay big money to
- 6:38Speaker 1: see this. A Hallmark movie would Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the
- 6:44Speaker 1: cable guy, bill ing Vall, and then the other guy
- 6:48Speaker 1: who drank a lot what was his name? Roy?
- 6:52Speaker 2: I'm sorry, tight Sally.
- 6:55Speaker 1: You imagine a Hallmark movie with a four of those guys,
- 6:58Speaker 1: that would be awesome. Well, you know it's funny is
- 7:01Speaker 1: I When my dad was still alive, we actually went
- 7:04Speaker 1: to the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, and I believe it
- 7:07Speaker 1: was our radio station KPX that got us got me
- 7:11Speaker 1: backstage passes so we were able to go. And it
- 7:13Speaker 1: was like a conference room, and I remember seeing Jeff
- 7:17Speaker 1: Foxworthy and Layer of the Cable Guy and and Bill
- 7:20Speaker 1: Engvall and Ron White and they were all just standing
- 7:22Speaker 1: around and my dad was like a kid in a
- 7:25Speaker 1: candy store, so cool. And he asked to get a
- 7:28Speaker 1: picture with Layer of the Cable Guy and we got
- 7:30Speaker 1: a picture and Larry goosed my dad during the picture
- 7:34Speaker 1: to make my dad be like, oh my god, you
- 7:36Speaker 1: know in the picture? Who did we just live? Did
- 7:40Speaker 1: we just lose Justine? After lost just his dad? Dad?
- 7:46Speaker 1: He goosed my dad and just just froze. God, Oh
- 7:51Speaker 1: he's gone, Like what happened? Well, we know that it's
- 7:54Speaker 1: not the entire town to Denver, because Matt, you're you
- 7:56Speaker 1: don't live too far away?
- 7:57Speaker 2: Right, I can throw a rock and his house.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I wonder what the heck happened the internet?
- 8:06Speaker 2: Eric did something?
- 8:06Speaker 1: No.
- 8:07Speaker 3: The only thing I would add to that Hallmark movie
- 8:09Speaker 3: Andy is if if we're doing like our dream line
- 8:13Speaker 3: up on that. I would want someone's angry grandfather to
- 8:16Speaker 3: be George Carlin.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Oh, yes, you'd have to have just so like older comics, right.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Yeah, the absolute god of stand up comedy. Just bring
- 8:25Speaker 3: George Carlin back to film.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That movie, right, yeah, but AI, I would want to
- 8:30Speaker 1: see it.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I would don't don't be AI at that. You can't
- 8:34Speaker 3: capture George Carlin through AI.
- 8:35Speaker 1: No, that would not be good. I'm trying to think
- 8:38Speaker 1: who's still with us that we'd be able to you'd
- 8:40Speaker 1: be able to have in that as an older cast,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and then the female cast members. Because it's Hallmarks, they
- 8:45Speaker 1: got to be a romance, so they've got to be
- 8:47Speaker 1: a romance.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I would put Eliza s Schlessinger up there, right, She's
- 8:54Speaker 3: lee went to one of her shows, and I've watched
- 8:56Speaker 3: most of her specials.
- 8:57Speaker 2: She is hilarious.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I absolutely enjoy watching She's phenomenal.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I feel like I know I know a woman who'd
- 9:04Speaker 4: be really great Hallmark movie. Gilda Radner.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Oh, she would have been good too, right, that would
- 9:09Speaker 1: have been good too. But again, you'd have to have
- 9:12Speaker 1: to be an AI thing to bring her back.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Some lawyer at Hallmark is just like Oh my god,
- 9:16Speaker 3: we would get so sued we would have to we
- 9:19Speaker 3: would record that movie and then promptly burn it.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I don't know, we might be onto something. Can you
- 9:25Speaker 1: imagine it would be great the blue collar comedy love.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Hopefully Justin will make his way back in here. But
- 9:31Speaker 1: you know we're reminiscenting. We're talking about, you know, great
- 9:34Speaker 1: moment to talking about. Well, we lost Justin when he
- 9:36Speaker 1: was talking about the photo with his dad and Larry
- 9:38Speaker 1: the cable guy goose to him, let's talk about photos.
- 9:41Speaker 1: We have not been able to really focus on the
- 9:45Speaker 1: scanning project that that Sean has been involved in, involving
- 9:49Speaker 1: the EPSOM Fast Photo six eighty Sean, how's that been going.
- 9:53Speaker 4: So andie ever since you told me you had gotten
- 9:56Speaker 4: it and demoed it? Right, Yes, I was pretty bent
- 9:59Speaker 4: on anyone right. I was like, this is gonna speed
- 10:02Speaker 4: up my process so much because I was using I
- 10:06Speaker 4: had at the time. I have just the the V
- 10:09Speaker 4: six hundred, the EPSOM V six hundred flatbed, which is
- 10:12Speaker 4: which is a really good flatbat Scanner's one of the
- 10:14Speaker 4: probably one of the top flatbat scanners you can get.
- 10:16Speaker 4: But it's impossible because it you can only scan like
- 10:19Speaker 4: four four x six is at a time. Oh yeah,
- 10:23Speaker 4: and if you scan at three hundred dpi, it still
- 10:26Speaker 4: takes five to six minutes to scan those four and
- 10:30Speaker 4: then that's all you get and then you have to
- 10:31Speaker 4: manually save them and it's a pain. So you had said, Hey,
- 10:35Speaker 4: check out this scanner that I got. I demoed at
- 10:37Speaker 4: your show on TV, and I waited, I waited, I waited,
- 10:40Speaker 4: and finally I pulled the trigger to bought one.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 4: And they're not cheap, right, I mean yeah, I think
- 10:46Speaker 4: total from BNH photo it was like five twenty five
- 10:49Speaker 4: or something.
- 10:49Speaker 1: This thing is awesome.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Yeah it I'll send a video and you can put
- 10:53Speaker 4: on the blog. It scans at six hundred dpi. A
- 10:59Speaker 4: photo was second.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Yeah wow, and even more if you're doing a three
- 11:03Speaker 1: hundred deep if you're doing three hundred depey.
- 11:05Speaker 4: It's like it's like half a second. Scan scan, scan, scan,
- 11:08Speaker 4: Its just spits them out. So I have my grandfather,
- 11:13Speaker 4: my grandparents photo collection, you know, I this We've talked
- 11:17Speaker 4: about this extensively throughout the history of the show, right
- 11:19Speaker 4: the last since twenty nineteen, since I started this project,
- 11:23Speaker 4: and I had a ton of decades worth of loose
- 11:27Speaker 4: four by six is with no negatives to scan. I
- 11:30Speaker 4: just they lost the negatives. The negatives were bundled up
- 11:33Speaker 4: with other pictures, et cetera, et cetera. So I had
- 11:36Speaker 4: gone through and had sorted it by by decade by year,
- 11:39Speaker 4: So the eighties, the nineties, the two thousands, of the
- 11:41Speaker 4: twenty tens, et cetera.
- 11:42Speaker 1: This was a lot of prep that you had already
- 11:44Speaker 1: done or you had to do that.
- 11:46Speaker 4: No, this was already done because I didn't want it.
- 11:48Speaker 4: I wasn't gonna sit there and scan these three four
- 11:51Speaker 4: at a time like I was. I'd done it for
- 11:53Speaker 4: a couple of days back in the like when I
- 11:56Speaker 4: first started.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I was like, this sucks. Yeah, it really sucked.
- 12:01Speaker 4: You lay them in, you flip it down a scan okay, wait,
- 12:04Speaker 4: flip it up, take them out. Then you're goobing up
- 12:06Speaker 4: the glass and you gotta wipe it out here your time.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I blew through thirty eight hundred photos in the last week.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Wow, lord, Wow, that is a.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Lot just sitting there and you know, on my on
- 12:21Speaker 4: my nights, or you know, just during the days I
- 12:23Speaker 4: had off from work or whatever. You know, you bundle
- 12:25Speaker 4: up sixty or seventy photos in a stack. It's a
- 12:28Speaker 4: about two inch stack of photos. You line them up
- 12:30Speaker 4: in the thing you line you know, you put the
- 12:32Speaker 4: guides together and you hit scan and he just goes scan, scan, scan.
- 12:38Speaker 4: It's scanning a photo a second.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Now are you scanning it to? Now? Some people will
- 12:42Speaker 1: scan and use their phone app to gather the photos.
- 12:45Speaker 1: You're scanning to a computer, right is it?
- 12:48Speaker 4: I'm just scanning directly to I have a Mac Pro
- 12:51Speaker 4: that I've got. I've got a little work station set
- 12:53Speaker 4: up with this scanner pugged in and it's going great.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I mean, it's cool because you can can prompt you
- 13:00Speaker 4: every time you start a batch photos, so you can
- 13:02Speaker 4: give it give it a name, a date, a month,
- 13:05Speaker 4: the time of the year, or just a name for
- 13:07Speaker 4: the file, et cetera. And going through it. There are
- 13:11Speaker 4: some some frustrations that I had some good things about it,
- 13:15Speaker 4: and like the good thing is you can have it
- 13:18Speaker 4: auto edit your images auto Yeah, just do a quick
- 13:21Speaker 4: processing like red eye reduction. If it comes in crooked,
- 13:26Speaker 4: it'll fix the crookedness. It'll do a little bit of
- 13:28Speaker 4: like contrast.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Wait, so what if what if you have photos from
- 13:33Speaker 1: the old days of you have the photo Matt and
- 13:36Speaker 1: maybe they're you know, take them with a one ten
- 13:39Speaker 1: and the color is just not as Chris, but all
- 13:41Speaker 1: of the pictures have that same kind of look to it.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Can it adjust all of those then in that batch.
- 13:48Speaker 4: It can, Yeah, it'll it scans them and then when
- 13:50Speaker 4: you're done scanning, you can either load more photos and
- 13:53Speaker 4: scan to the same batch or tell it to finish
- 13:55Speaker 4: and it'll process. It takes about two or three minutes
- 13:57Speaker 4: to process about sixty photos. I don't like the auto
- 14:03Speaker 4: the fixes. They were not good. They were some were poor,
- 14:07Speaker 4: some were good. So then sorting through, okay, it gives
- 14:11Speaker 4: you two files. It gives you the original, gives you
- 14:13Speaker 4: the edited ones. So it gives you file one a
- 14:16Speaker 4: file one B file two a file two B file,
- 14:18Speaker 4: So you have to go through and I don't filtering
- 14:21Speaker 4: through those is kind of a pain. So I did
- 14:25Speaker 4: scan a lot of them like that were their doubles.
- 14:27Speaker 4: But then I was just like, I'm not liking the results.
- 14:29Speaker 4: So I just ended up just eventually, after probably eleven
- 14:33Speaker 4: hundred photos, I just stopped doing the the edits. I'll
- 14:36Speaker 4: go through, I'll go through the light room and edit
- 14:38Speaker 4: them if I want to, Like, I'll take care of
- 14:39Speaker 4: that anymote. Some of the other cool features that are
- 14:43Speaker 4: on this is my grandma was very good about writing
- 14:46Speaker 4: details on the backs of the photos.
- 14:49Speaker 1: So what do you do in that point?
- 14:52Speaker 4: This will scan the front and the back at the
- 14:55Speaker 4: same time.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't I didn't know that. And you can.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Go in and you can tweak the to be more aggressive,
- 15:02Speaker 4: meaning if it detects a little bit of handwriting, it
- 15:05Speaker 4: might not scan it, or you can make it less
- 15:08Speaker 4: aggressive to where it will scan the entire back even
- 15:10Speaker 4: if there's no handwriting on it, so it scans the
- 15:13Speaker 4: front and the backs at the same time if you
- 15:15Speaker 4: tell it to. You can automatically tell it to, which
- 15:18Speaker 4: is great because then it scans and then you get
- 15:20Speaker 4: two pictures. It basically gives you, you know, file one A,
- 15:24Speaker 4: File one B.
- 15:26Speaker 1: In that person in that person's writing, which I don't
- 15:29Speaker 1: know about you, but that's something special as well, to
- 15:31Speaker 1: have a grandparent or parents handwriting. You're seeing them.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yeah, actually we're leeh and I are dealing with that
- 15:39Speaker 3: right now. One of actually she found her grandfather's handwriting
- 15:47Speaker 3: and got it inverted as a tattoo.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Because one of.
- 15:52Speaker 1: His big phrases was always you be good to you.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And she got that.
- 15:56Speaker 3: So anytime she looks at it in the mirror, it
- 15:58Speaker 3: always says that to her. Now, were going through all
- 16:01Speaker 3: of her paternal grandmothers photos, documents, everything, desperately trying to
- 16:07Speaker 3: find something of her handwriting so that we can use
- 16:11Speaker 3: that too. She wants to possibly create another tattoo from that.
- 16:15Speaker 3: But yeah, it being able to actually have that digitized
- 16:18Speaker 3: and stored and saved is that's amazing.
- 16:21Speaker 1: That is cool. Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 4: So and it'll do like it does just more than
- 16:25Speaker 4: four by six I think it can. Only it only
- 16:27Speaker 4: has a specific like thickness it can do like it
- 16:31Speaker 4: can barely do postcards. But it'll do postcards. So front
- 16:35Speaker 4: and backs of postcards, because my grandparents sent and received
- 16:38Speaker 4: a lot of postcards from my family growing up. They
- 16:40Speaker 4: have a ton of postcards that I scan and skate
- 16:42Speaker 4: saved the front and the backs of all the postcards.
- 16:44Speaker 4: So it's just was a really cool process, right the
- 16:48Speaker 4: one caveat I will say, if you're doing a lot
- 16:49Speaker 4: of pictures in a short amount of time, you have
- 16:52Speaker 4: to open it and clean the scanning surface.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Did you have did you have some jams.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Is some jams, and then if you have to take
- 17:02Speaker 4: photos out of albums, they're in plastic sleeves. That plastic
- 17:07Speaker 4: leaves a residue on the surface of the film. Also,
- 17:11Speaker 4: the emulsion from the film is sticky, right that it's
- 17:14Speaker 4: so as you scan, if you don't open it up
- 17:17Speaker 4: and take some I p A and scrub it across.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Not beer, just I scroll alcohol.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I was like, really, what kind of what kind of beer?
- 17:25Speaker 3: I was gonna say, would you you don't want to
- 17:27Speaker 3: use a hazy for that?
- 17:28Speaker 2: Right?
- 17:30Speaker 1: An amber.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Because it's got two elements in there, up front and
- 17:36Speaker 4: the back. And one of the albums that I had
- 17:40Speaker 4: taken apart was you had stuck them on in the
- 17:44Speaker 4: album with the adhesive like they came like that from
- 17:46Speaker 4: the store. But at one point I had pulled all
- 17:49Speaker 4: that off, so as it was going through, it was
- 17:52Speaker 4: rubbing that adhesive across there, and it was I ended
- 17:54Speaker 4: up looking at the pictures and most of them had
- 17:56Speaker 4: streaks because it was rolling through and then just rubbing
- 18:01Speaker 4: off on the glass.
- 18:02Speaker 1: So how often would you do that? I did?
- 18:05Speaker 4: I started doing it after every batch, so I would
- 18:07Speaker 4: do like sixty to eighty photos and then I would
- 18:09Speaker 4: clean it because then you get debris, You get oil
- 18:13Speaker 4: from your fring, oil from the fingertips. Oil. You know,
- 18:15Speaker 4: it just got gummed up like it. So I just
- 18:18Speaker 4: took hundred percent cotton lint free pad, ninety nine percent
- 18:22Speaker 4: alcohol scrupscub, scrub, done, grinston repeat.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So wow, how much time would you say this saved?
- 18:29Speaker 1: Saved you?
- 18:30Speaker 4: Oh? Days?
- 18:33Speaker 1: Weeks?
- 18:33Speaker 4: I mean it. I scanned so many photos and this
- 18:39Speaker 4: also because I had some free time I wanted. Okay,
- 18:43Speaker 4: So now I had these files. I had all these
- 18:45Speaker 4: folders with the different years, the different days, and they
- 18:47Speaker 4: were all just in one big directory. So that I
- 18:50Speaker 4: was like, well, I kind of want it sorted by year.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Now what do I have to do? I have to
- 18:54Speaker 4: go and look at every every year that I've got.
- 18:56Speaker 4: So well, I've been using Chatgypt and Amazon que to
- 19:02Speaker 4: write Python scripts for me. So all I did was
- 19:06Speaker 4: I downloaded Visual Studio coder. Right, that's what it's called
- 19:09Speaker 4: m H type downloaded. The Amazon Q extension said, please
- 19:14Speaker 4: write me a Python three script that will take this directory.
- 19:19Speaker 4: If it has a four digit year in it, please
- 19:21Speaker 4: put that in a new directory with all the other folders.
- 19:24Speaker 4: That have the same year. Please go send put clicked
- 19:28Speaker 4: on the directory, told it this directory. Boom, they're all
- 19:31Speaker 4: on a new folder. Okay, Now I want you to
- 19:33Speaker 4: sort the originals and the edited once because it says,
- 19:36Speaker 4: you know, file one A, file one B. Please separate
- 19:39Speaker 4: those into two separate directories, one called edited, one called originals.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Go send, boom, done all.
- 19:44Speaker 1: In Wow, in minutes.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I mean I've created I've never coded a Python in
- 19:49Speaker 4: my life.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Maybe maybe maybe a little bit.
- 19:52Speaker 4: So if you're interested in doing like stuff like that,
- 19:55Speaker 4: like very simple like just file batch file naming. It
- 20:01Speaker 4: took me a day to get all that organized using
- 20:07Speaker 4: so and Amazon q will help you install the lip,
- 20:11Speaker 4: the libs, the directories, the you know, I don't know.
- 20:15Speaker 4: So if you're curious about just doing a little bit
- 20:17Speaker 4: of Python coding, or if you have a little bit
- 20:19Speaker 4: of Python coding experience, Amazon q it's free to use.
- 20:22Speaker 4: With the visual I can't it's visual studio vs.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Code.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Yeah vs code.
- 20:26Speaker 1: That's it, so all right, But you had it, you
- 20:29Speaker 1: had a choice of going with the epsin Fast Photo
- 20:32Speaker 1: six eighty, which I you know, I showed showed on
- 20:35Speaker 1: television and loved it. It's the one you see in
- 20:37Speaker 1: the ads with Shaquille O'Neil and his mom, which I
- 20:39Speaker 1: think are pretty cool talking about preserving memories, or the
- 20:43Speaker 1: Visionaire because I remember you you sent me an email
- 20:45Speaker 1: saying Visionari it's about a hundred bucks cheaper. Did you
- 20:49Speaker 1: did you compare the specs and just look at it
- 20:52Speaker 1: because epstin just seemed to offer a little more when
- 20:54Speaker 1: it came to the software and what it was able
- 20:55Speaker 1: to do.
- 20:56Speaker 4: You know, I just I've had such good experience with
- 20:59Speaker 4: ebsin Skinner over the years, with with the with the
- 21:02Speaker 4: V six hundred that I have, plus some EPs and
- 21:05Speaker 4: scanners I've had in the past, and they're they're kind
- 21:07Speaker 4: of up there in the terms of like the best
- 21:09Speaker 4: of the best, in in scanning quality and in just hardware.
- 21:13Speaker 4: So I just pulled the trigger on with the absence,
- 21:15Speaker 4: I didn't know enough about Visioneer. It's not a product
- 21:17Speaker 4: i'd heard of before. I'm sure it would have worked fine,
- 21:22Speaker 4: but this did everything I needed it too. I bought
- 21:24Speaker 4: it on B and H. I have a great reputation
- 21:26Speaker 4: with B and H personally and professionally, so that was
- 21:29Speaker 4: super easy.
- 21:31Speaker 1: What are you gonna do now when you scanned all
- 21:33Speaker 1: these photos. You finished the project, will you then tell
- 21:38Speaker 1: your friends, Hey, you have photos you need scanned.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Well, I mean, so this was just my grandparents stuff, right,
- 21:43Speaker 4: So now I've got my parents are going to be
- 21:46Speaker 4: bringing all my child like my parents and my childhood
- 21:50Speaker 4: stuff in and I'm going to scan all that in too.
- 21:52Speaker 4: So then my aunt and my uncle and Caitlin's parents
- 21:55Speaker 4: and like they've over the years. Over the years, it
- 22:00Speaker 4: hasn't just been my grandparents collection, right, I've digitized stuff
- 22:04Speaker 4: for Kale's family. I've digitized stuff for other friends' families,
- 22:07Speaker 4: friends collections. Somebody says, hey, I've found these random thirty
- 22:11Speaker 4: five millimeter scans in my basement. Can you scan these
- 22:13Speaker 4: for me? Sure, it takes me twenty minutes, whatever, But
- 22:16Speaker 4: I like the what the best part about this experience
- 22:20Speaker 4: for me, and I've said this before, is the tactile
- 22:23Speaker 4: feeling of looking and remembering memories from my childhood or
- 22:28Speaker 4: from my family. Yew, some of them have passed, right,
- 22:30Speaker 4: So seeing these pictures like, oh, it's my grandpa, it's great.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Like here, I've got this picture of my grandparents right
- 22:34Speaker 4: here that I scanned it. It was just happened to be
- 22:36Speaker 4: sitting on my desk.
- 22:37Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 22:37Speaker 4: This is awesome for me because I this is a
- 22:39Speaker 4: physical picture. I can feel this right. Somebody in my
- 22:43Speaker 4: family took this picture and it represents me and my
- 22:46Speaker 4: family and you know, my loved ones. So that's been
- 22:50Speaker 4: the best part of this whole process, is just filtering
- 22:52Speaker 4: through and organizing the photos and looking at this, going okay,
- 22:55Speaker 4: these are of my uncles from the eighties. I wasn't
- 22:58Speaker 4: born wow, right, but it's like he these are memories
- 23:01Speaker 4: for him. So now I just I periodically. I've saved
- 23:05Speaker 4: the one some of the best ones in a folder
- 23:07Speaker 4: and I'll periodically just send them to those family members
- 23:10Speaker 4: in text messages.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I've mailed them, right.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Like, I'm just surprising people with little life moments like that.
- 23:19Speaker 4: You'd be surprised how often that comes up, going hey
- 23:24Speaker 4: I love that picture, by the way, or hey, you
- 23:26Speaker 4: know it made me cry that you sent a picture
- 23:28Speaker 4: of Papa saying my name on my birthday back when
- 23:31Speaker 4: I was two years old and he passed away ten
- 23:33Speaker 4: years ago.
- 23:34Speaker 1: It's also kind of special too, because I mean digital
- 23:37Speaker 1: is nice, and yeah, you could you could scan it
- 23:39Speaker 1: send a digital You could also have you got a
- 23:41Speaker 1: good printer, you could also print it and that way
- 23:44Speaker 1: people would actually have a physical copy of that picture.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I will say that this, this scanner does not
- 23:50Speaker 4: like glossy printed photos, like if you took an inkjet
- 23:55Speaker 4: and printed it on photo paper, you know, you get
- 23:57Speaker 4: that really thick paper, the really glossy, almost yeah stocky
- 24:00Speaker 4: type stuff. This hated it because my grandparents had some
- 24:03Speaker 4: of that and you could tell it would make squeaking
- 24:05Speaker 4: noises when it pulled the paper through. It definitely did
- 24:07Speaker 4: not like that. So yeah, no, it's just it's been
- 24:09Speaker 4: a great experience, and some of the feedback that I've
- 24:12Speaker 4: gotten from other family members has been that, you know,
- 24:15Speaker 4: not everybody would take the time to do this. This
- 24:18Speaker 4: was a very labor intensive thing that I did, and
- 24:20Speaker 4: a lot of it took place during COVID, so I
- 24:22Speaker 4: had a lot of extra time to do it. But
- 24:24Speaker 4: it's just not a lot of people would do that.
- 24:27Speaker 1: It's a very fulfilling family project, which is what it's
- 24:30Speaker 1: and episod has made it a little easier for you,
- 24:32Speaker 1: which is part.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Yeah, this was like, this saved the end of this
- 24:36Speaker 4: project because I was never going to get that done
- 24:38Speaker 4: because I I'm not joking like it. It was a
- 24:41Speaker 4: it was a pain in the rear end to flip
- 24:44Speaker 4: that scanner down to do four at a time, five
- 24:46Speaker 4: to six minutes, eight minutes to yeah, four pictures and
- 24:49Speaker 4: this was cranking out sixty a minute.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Wow. We'll put the video up on our blog. Listeners
- 24:56Speaker 1: can take a look at that as well to see
- 24:58Speaker 1: just how fast this is. But once and it's the
- 25:00Speaker 1: Epstom Fast Fast Photo six eighty W which is available now.
- 25:05Speaker 1: It came out probably about seven or eight months ago,
- 25:08Speaker 1: and all.
- 25:08Speaker 4: The software is free, so just downloaded from Resin's website.
- 25:11Speaker 4: It was I was going in minutes.
- 25:13Speaker 1: There you go. All right, we're gonna take quick break,
- 25:15Speaker 1: come back. We have listened to questions. I've got a
- 25:17Speaker 1: question for you, guys. Maybe you can help me with
- 25:19Speaker 1: something that I've decided to jump into the Windows eleven
- 25:23Speaker 1: fold and I'll tell you why that's coming up with
- 25:25Speaker 1: tech talk Radio. I'm Eddie Taylor, I'm Sean to Weird,
- 25:29Speaker 1: I'm Matt Jones, and I'm justin. Let me find us
- 25:31Speaker 1: on the web at tech talk radio dot com. We'll
- 25:33Speaker 1: be right back and now back to tech talk Radio.
- 25:38Speaker 1: All right, So when it comes to Windows eleven, which
- 25:41Speaker 1: is in October, that will be the end of life
- 25:44Speaker 1: for Windows ten, as they say it now. Don't let
- 25:47Speaker 1: that scare you. You need a lot of people talking
- 25:49Speaker 1: about that, this end of life and right away you're
- 25:52Speaker 1: gonna think, oh my gosh, my computer is gonna just
- 25:54Speaker 1: stop working. It's not gonna do anything. That's not the case.
- 25:59Speaker 1: It means you're not gonna get the security updates. We've
- 26:01Speaker 1: seen this before. Microsoft is saying you could pay for updates.
- 26:05Speaker 1: They might make that available. If there is an update
- 26:09Speaker 1: that is I mean going to be really needed, they
- 26:13Speaker 1: may still put one out. They did that before with XP.
- 26:15Speaker 1: They did that with Windows seven, when they said that
- 26:18Speaker 1: was in the end of life, they put one out.
- 26:20Speaker 1: But as we continue to go down this road with
- 26:23Speaker 1: Windows eleven, those that do have it have done updates
- 26:26Speaker 1: and have been nothing but disappointed. Updates that have gotten
- 26:31Speaker 1: rid of certain features like WordPad. Of course, you're very
- 26:34Speaker 1: easy to bring back, but they at rid of it.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Why I have no clue. I don't know. Is it
- 26:39Speaker 1: so that people would go ahead and start using their
- 26:42Speaker 1: office suite. The other problem that I found is networking,
- 26:48Speaker 1: and some have tried to find a work around to that,
- 26:51Speaker 1: and I just discovered it the other day what the
- 26:53Speaker 1: real problem was. So I have a studio that is
- 26:56Speaker 1: separate that I'm in right now from an office, and
- 26:59Speaker 1: in the office is where I do all my editing.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I'll have people coming and record in the studio, or
- 27:04Speaker 1: we'll record the show. I'll go into the office, where
- 27:06Speaker 1: it's a little more comfortable, and I'll do my editing
- 27:08Speaker 1: in there. And it used to be I saved it
- 27:11Speaker 1: on a shared folder and I would go in the
- 27:13Speaker 1: other room and I could pull that folder across and
- 27:16Speaker 1: do the editing I needed. As soon as I installed
- 27:19Speaker 1: one of the twenty four to EH two, I think
- 27:20Speaker 1: it was I couldn't do that anymore. Couldn't access the
- 27:24Speaker 1: other computers, couldn't find them, couldn't see them. It was
- 27:27Speaker 1: just it was so frustrating. And I know there's probably
- 27:31Speaker 1: a quick workaround and easy work around, but it was
- 27:34Speaker 1: working for me. So the other day I went to
- 27:37Speaker 1: update Gloria's computer in her office and I left it on,
- 27:42Speaker 1: and when I sat down on my computer, all of
- 27:44Speaker 1: a sudden, her computer was showing up on my list
- 27:47Speaker 1: of network computers. Her computer's Windows eleven, so that's what
- 27:51Speaker 1: it is. It only working with Windows eleven based computers.
- 27:55Speaker 1: It'll show my laptop and it'll show that and that's it,
- 27:57Speaker 1: and I could connect to it. So I decided, all
- 28:00Speaker 1: right for the studio, just for the sake of making
- 28:03Speaker 1: it easier, I'm going to go ahead and bite the bullet.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I've got an I three in here. Now. That is
- 28:07Speaker 1: an older I three processor that you know it's it's
- 28:13Speaker 1: it's not the newest. I can't upgrade it. There's not
- 28:15Speaker 1: TPM two point zero in it. It's an old motherboard.
- 28:19Speaker 1: So I decided to go ahead. I had a seven
- 28:21Speaker 1: Z seven ninety for Asus that I said, okay, I
- 28:23Speaker 1: might as well go ahead and update it, and so
- 28:26Speaker 1: I have that board there. I went ahead and I
- 28:29Speaker 1: ordered an I five twelve four to end from Intel.
- 28:33Speaker 1: They were only one hundred and eleven bucks, right, I thought,
- 28:36Speaker 1: that's not a bad price. Bought the memory and a
- 28:41Speaker 1: sound card, and that's going to be used just for
- 28:44Speaker 1: our recordings. But one of the things I noticed, and
- 28:47Speaker 1: I have a big old fan, I didn't really want
- 28:51Speaker 1: to use that big old fan for it because it's
- 28:53Speaker 1: not a powerhouse system. It's just recording audio. But the
- 28:56Speaker 1: process sorrey I bought even came with the Intel fan,
- 29:00Speaker 1: and you know some of us have bought processors that
- 29:03Speaker 1: come with the fan. But I noticed on the bottom
- 29:06Speaker 1: of the fan you get three strips of heat sync
- 29:10Speaker 1: or you know, past thermal paste. But I'm thinking is
- 29:15Speaker 1: that enough? So I wanted to ask you, guys, should
- 29:19Speaker 1: I put more thermal paste on the processor and not
- 29:23Speaker 1: rely on the three strips well that you get on
- 29:25Speaker 1: the fan. First off, you need to scrape that off
- 29:29Speaker 1: and get better thermal paste. All right, all right, you
- 29:33Speaker 1: think metal, I can remember what is it? Is it
- 29:35Speaker 1: liquid thermal or what is it? Yeah? I think it is.
- 29:37Speaker 1: It comes at a little white bottle. Well, they are
- 29:40Speaker 1: all kinds of different ones now, but it's basically it's
- 29:42Speaker 1: basically liquid metal. That's what you want. That stuff. It's
- 29:47Speaker 1: not gonna work. Now. I had all work, but it's
- 29:50Speaker 1: not gonna be great. Every time I've done a build,
- 29:53Speaker 1: I scrape off that carefully. You don't want to use
- 29:56Speaker 1: like a metal scraper, right, you know, you can use
- 29:58Speaker 1: a razorblade, but you gotta be careful about the the
- 30:00Speaker 1: angle that you scrape it off of because you don't
- 30:02Speaker 1: want to scratch the actual heat sink, but scrape it off,
- 30:06Speaker 1: get it cleaned off, use some alcohol to get the
- 30:08Speaker 1: residue off, and then put fresh like liquid metal thermal
- 30:12Speaker 1: paste on it. It's gonna be much better. I actually
- 30:15Speaker 1: have a it's almost like I want to say, a
- 30:17Speaker 1: degreaser for thermal paste. It's made just for that for
- 30:20Speaker 1: removing thermal paste from processors. So I could probably use
- 30:24Speaker 1: that on here as well. Put it on you can.
- 30:26Speaker 3: You can use that on there. Justin's on Team liquid Metal.
- 30:30Speaker 3: I've been using a nock to a you know, king
- 30:33Speaker 3: of computer cooling for so long.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Came out with theirs.
- 30:36Speaker 3: They have a noc to a nt H one, which
- 30:39Speaker 3: is their version of thermal paste. Before that, I was
- 30:42Speaker 3: using cry a not but yeah, the stuff that you
- 30:46Speaker 3: have on there, like, yes, it.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Will work, right, but within a year.
- 30:54Speaker 3: You're gonna start seeing temperatures starting to spike and you're
- 30:56Speaker 3: gonna have to go do it anyways.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Right, might as well do it before I before I
- 31:00Speaker 1: connect it right.
- 31:01Speaker 3: And then and then you left out the big question,
- 31:04Speaker 3: the truly divisive question.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Do you do a pe sized dot? Do you do
- 31:09Speaker 1: the X? Do you do the box?
- 31:11Speaker 2: How do you apply your.
- 31:13Speaker 4: This question just came up in one of my discord
- 31:16Speaker 4: groups of a buddy who's rebuilding his PC, and he said, hey,
- 31:20Speaker 4: what are the recommendations for how to apply a thorough pace?
- 31:22Speaker 4: And every everybody gave a different answer. Really, I'm on
- 31:26Speaker 4: team you put a dot in the middle and you
- 31:29Speaker 4: spread it out evenly across the whole surface.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Yep, Now how do you spread it? How do you
- 31:32Speaker 1: spread it out? Though?
- 31:33Speaker 4: You usually come with a little spade that you can
- 31:35Speaker 4: a little plastic spade that you can use. But I
- 31:37Speaker 4: just put a nice even coding around it. Around the edge.
- 31:40Speaker 4: You can't see the writing on the top of the processor.
- 31:43Speaker 4: It's worked fine for every bill I've done. Yeah, I always,
- 31:46Speaker 4: But that's that's a cardinal sin for some people.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen some people think they put so much
- 31:51Speaker 1: thermal they you squeeze it and then it's coming off
- 31:53Speaker 1: the sides and everything, and what are you doing?
- 31:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's still want that no thermal.
- 32:00Speaker 3: This is one of those where like you want to
- 32:02Speaker 3: start a nerd fight in microcenter with like one sentence,
- 32:06Speaker 3: you just like there's only one right way to put
- 32:08Speaker 3: on thermal paste, and it's and just say whatever it
- 32:11Speaker 3: is and whatever you feel like saying that day and
- 32:15Speaker 3: you like mirror cats popping up, You'll see people being like,
- 32:18Speaker 3: do you say she says she used the dot? He
- 32:21Speaker 3: said no, no, no, you got to use the X. No, man,
- 32:23Speaker 3: you gotta spread it out.
- 32:25Speaker 1: No, you gotta do the box.
- 32:26Speaker 3: And then you walk away as you've sown chaos in
- 32:29Speaker 3: your wake.
- 32:29Speaker 1: All right, So Matt, so Sean says he likes the dot.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Do you have a particular method?
- 32:35Speaker 3: I do the dot, and then, like Sean, I do
- 32:39Speaker 3: like a gentle coat, but I don't.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Take it all the way to the edge.
- 32:44Speaker 3: I leave just kind of like a little border gap
- 32:46Speaker 3: just so because I know it's still gonna squish a
- 32:48Speaker 3: little bit. So I give it just like a little
- 32:51Speaker 3: bit of room to move out. And I recently had
- 32:55Speaker 3: to do that three different times when building this server
- 32:59Speaker 3: racks up because we we got Lee's all set up
- 33:02Speaker 3: and then found out that my old motherboard was dead right,
- 33:05Speaker 3: And at that point, when you have to do it
- 33:06Speaker 3: that many times in a short spin, you get.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Really good with thermal pains. Like justin what about you,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I'm kind of team dot on Team dot, I mean, yeah,
- 33:14Speaker 1: team Dot. Use a little spades, spread it around if
- 33:16Speaker 1: there's a tiny bit of it that you know doesn't
- 33:18Speaker 1: get quite covered, I'll put a tiny little bit on.
- 33:22Speaker 1: But honestly, with with when it comes to like thermal paste,
- 33:25Speaker 1: it's less is more. Yeah, yeah, now now.
- 33:28Speaker 4: Less is more because again, the same person that we
- 33:31Speaker 4: were talking about by discor group had an issue where
- 33:34Speaker 4: when he pulled tried to pull the cooler off and
- 33:36Speaker 4: pull the CPU out. Right, he had it loose, He
- 33:39Speaker 4: had it loose, but because it had baked down there
- 33:41Speaker 4: for so long, it didn't separate from the cooler. So
- 33:46Speaker 4: off the recommend the recommend No, it didn't damage anything,
- 33:48Speaker 4: but thankfully, but the recommendation is either fire up your
- 33:51Speaker 4: computer for a minute or two to let the CPU
- 33:53Speaker 4: warm up, or if it's already out, you can use
- 33:56Speaker 4: a hair dryer or a heat gun and just heat
- 33:57Speaker 4: it up a little bit and hopefully break it free.
- 33:59Speaker 4: But just just be careful when you do that because
- 34:02Speaker 4: if you are pulling on the cooler and this it
- 34:06Speaker 4: is not coming off the CPU and you're still locked
- 34:08Speaker 4: in place, you have to be careful because you could
- 34:11Speaker 4: rip it out and rip out pins or damage the socket,
- 34:15Speaker 4: the l l G A or whatever.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Right, So next big question too is going to be
- 34:20Speaker 1: what do you do with the old computer? Then? And
- 34:22Speaker 1: a lot of people gonna be maybe going that route,
- 34:24Speaker 1: going to buying a new system, building their own.
- 34:28Speaker 4: I have a nice shelf back here, I can put
- 34:30Speaker 4: all your spar computer.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yeah, if any, if any listeners are like I don't
- 34:37Speaker 3: know what to do with my computer, You've got four
- 34:39Speaker 3: guys that you're listening to who will gladly give your
- 34:42Speaker 3: wayward computers a home.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Oh.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Actually, I actually just started a project because, as you
- 34:48Speaker 3: guys know, I've been unemployed for a while. I thankfully
- 34:51Speaker 3: finally landed something. But in the meantime I started building
- 34:57Speaker 3: a really like enterprise grade home.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Lind Right.
- 35:01Speaker 3: So I took an old computer, you know.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Wiped out.
- 35:05Speaker 3: It's got like twelve terabytes of storage on there. It's
- 35:09Speaker 3: it used to be my media server. And I've got
- 35:11Speaker 3: two other ones, two smaller machines. I've installed proxmocks, which
- 35:15Speaker 3: is a virtualization platform on all of them. They all
- 35:18Speaker 3: talk to each other, and I'm just setting everything up
- 35:22Speaker 3: like I'm messing with stuff that I've never gotten to
- 35:24Speaker 3: do or play with in my professional career. I'm playing
- 35:28Speaker 3: with Kubernetes and Docker, and terraform and ansible and screaming
- 35:33Speaker 3: curse words deep into the night as it's like everything's
- 35:36Speaker 3: working except DNS isn't quite working, and I'm like, okay,
- 35:39Speaker 3: DNS is never working, so thank you.
- 35:41Speaker 2: That's that's fantastic.
- 35:43Speaker 1: That's so.
- 35:43Speaker 3: That's always Another good one for old computers is if
- 35:46Speaker 3: you just like, just google what can I do with
- 35:49Speaker 3: an old computer, and you'll have this slew of projects
- 35:52Speaker 3: come up. I mean, Justin's got a really cool home
- 35:55Speaker 3: assistant set up. That's right, that people could you know,
- 36:00Speaker 3: you you need some computer know how, but I mean,
- 36:03Speaker 3: that's that's really really cool, right, Yeah, smart homes are
- 36:07Speaker 3: really cool.
- 36:07Speaker 1: And honestly, you know, home assistant has gotten a lot
- 36:10Speaker 1: easier over the years. You know, when I started getting
- 36:13Speaker 1: into home assistant, you were still writing in Yamel code,
- 36:16Speaker 1: which now you don't have to do that anymore. Most
- 36:18Speaker 1: of the you know, ninety five percent of the stuff
- 36:20Speaker 1: you can do in home assistant is is through the
- 36:22Speaker 1: web UI. But yeah, it does it does require a
- 36:24Speaker 1: little bit of a know how. Yeah right. Well. PC
- 36:27Speaker 1: World put out a story recently too about this you know,
- 36:29Speaker 1: upcoming end of life for Windows ten and they were
- 36:32Speaker 1: offering up some alternatives. And I was reading the article
- 36:35Speaker 1: and I thought about it. Uh, and they had these
- 36:38Speaker 1: these alternates. They said, you could continue to run Windows
- 36:41Speaker 1: ten if you wanted. You could pay for upgrades to Microsoft.
- 36:44Speaker 1: No idea what they're going to charge for that. Are
- 36:46Speaker 1: they going to charge five dollars a month, you know,
- 36:49Speaker 1: or or something like that. Or you could say goodbye
- 36:52Speaker 1: to Microsoft and run Linux. The problem is you say
- 36:55Speaker 1: that to most people and they will run the other
- 36:58Speaker 1: way because they have no idea how easy Linux is
- 37:02Speaker 1: to actually employ. They think it's something that only you know,
- 37:06Speaker 1: Jimmy Neutron would end up being able to do, when
- 37:08Speaker 1: actually it's really not that difficult. Well, even in the
- 37:11Speaker 1: past like year or so, I mean now that Linux
- 37:14Speaker 1: has come out with Linux Mint and other other variations
- 37:18Speaker 1: of Linux that are almost replicas of Microsoft Windows with
- 37:24Speaker 1: no command line needed. You know, people people think Linux
- 37:27Speaker 1: and they're like, oh my god, I got to be
- 37:29Speaker 1: a hacker. I got a no command line not anymore? No,
- 37:32Speaker 1: there you still can you sin? Yeah?
- 37:35Speaker 3: I mean, if you really want to be a hacker,
- 37:37Speaker 3: you can install Collie Linux. That's that's a Linux distro
- 37:40Speaker 3: built for penetration testing. But if you're if you're an
- 37:44Speaker 3: end user, you know, John Q Public looking to dabble
- 37:49Speaker 3: in Linux.
- 37:50Speaker 2: The three most.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Accessible distros, and when I say distros for listeners, that's
- 37:56Speaker 3: short for distributions because Linux comes in so many different varieties.
- 38:01Speaker 3: But the three most accessible distros are mint, Arch and Ubuntu, U,
- 38:06Speaker 3: b U and t U. Those three are almost as
- 38:10Speaker 3: justin put it, they're almost carbon copies of Windows. It's
- 38:13Speaker 3: a very very small learning curve to get into that.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Yeah. The one I hear, just one I tried it
- 38:19Speaker 1: was wind Boon too, and I thought that was pretty cool.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's another great one.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Yeah, you might have a slight learning curve with it,
- 38:28Speaker 3: very small, but it overall they're if you're just you know,
- 38:32Speaker 3: web browsing email, maybe checking it, you know, maybe hit
- 38:35Speaker 3: up Netflix or something like that, then those distros would
- 38:38Speaker 3: easily take care of your issues. And Linux because it
- 38:41Speaker 3: it is a much lighter operating system in the way
- 38:45Speaker 3: it does things that even older computers will seem lightning
- 38:49Speaker 3: fast on any of those distributions like Windows. Windows does
- 38:53Speaker 3: this thing called a graceful shut down. It calmly asks
- 38:57Speaker 3: everything to turn off. Linux rags everything into a back
- 39:01Speaker 3: alley and puts around in it and says you're done.
- 39:06Speaker 1: That's Windows. That's a yeah, that's a beautiful way of
- 39:10Speaker 1: putting it.
- 39:10Speaker 3: Windows is like, can you please turn off? And Lennox
- 39:14Speaker 3: is like, I'm gonna have to old yell.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Are you I'm sorry? Yeah? Windows, Windows, You're like, you know,
- 39:18Speaker 1: can you please tell me? You're like, no, no, I'm not.
- 39:21Speaker 1: I'm just gonna sit here and wait and you're gonna
- 39:23Speaker 1: be waiting for me to reboot. All right, we got
- 39:26Speaker 1: to take another break. We come back with more of
- 39:28Speaker 1: tech talk Radio. You make that fake, keep making that
- 39:31Speaker 1: face justin no, no, I'm not and why.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And see I see that face way too much with
- 39:38Speaker 4: my kids right now. I don't want to.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, more of tech talk Radio the way.
- 39:42Speaker 1: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm I'm Matt Jones, and I'm no
- 39:52Speaker 1: that face that's just a golden uh. We'll be right
- 39:56Speaker 1: back now. Back to Tech talk Radio.
- 40:00Speaker 3: Listener question from Ricky in Tucson. A listen every week
- 40:04Speaker 3: and try to absorb everything I can. I decided to
- 40:07Speaker 3: go ahead and instead of buying an hPer pre built system,
- 40:10Speaker 3: to go my way and build my own. However, it's
- 40:12Speaker 3: been a wise, very nice good first off, good choice, Ricky.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I was looking at the site.
- 40:17Speaker 3: You guys recommended PC parts picker. But wonder do I
- 40:20Speaker 3: still need to buy a separate sound card and graphics
- 40:23Speaker 3: card or can I get them integrated? That is a
- 40:25Speaker 3: fantastic question, Ricky, And I'm going to break it into
- 40:30Speaker 3: three parts. The first one's gonna be nice and quick.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Do I still need a sound card? No, you do
- 40:36Speaker 3: not need a sound card. I have not rocked a
- 40:37Speaker 3: sound card in probably close to a dead unless you're
- 40:40Speaker 3: like an audio file or doing audio engineering.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Correct.
- 40:44Speaker 3: If you really need like high quality audio, which ninety
- 40:48Speaker 3: nine point five percent of us don't, the onboard audio
- 40:52Speaker 3: is just fine, it'll take care of you. As for
- 40:57Speaker 3: the graphics card and can I get them integrated? It
- 41:00Speaker 3: used to be that pretty much every processor came with
- 41:03Speaker 3: some form of integrated graphics. Around about four or five
- 41:08Speaker 3: years ago, chip manufacturers started chopping that feature out, And
- 41:14Speaker 3: the reason that they were chopping that out is to
- 41:16Speaker 3: get more room on the die, more cores, more power
- 41:19Speaker 3: you now need if you want to do integrated graphics,
- 41:22Speaker 3: you have to make sure that you're looking on the
- 41:25Speaker 3: details of the processor and see if it has an
- 41:29Speaker 3: integrated graphics unit. If it has one of those, you
- 41:33Speaker 3: can definitely use that. That'll power your system. That's more
- 41:35Speaker 3: than fine. AMD used to use something. They didn't call
- 41:39Speaker 3: it a CPU. They called it an APU, an accelerated
- 41:42Speaker 3: processing unit, and it came with both. I recommendation, if
- 41:46Speaker 3: you're just using this for general everyday use, surfing the web,
- 41:49Speaker 3: things like that, yeah, you can do that. I'm a
- 41:53Speaker 3: fan of the graphics card because that frees up a
- 41:57Speaker 3: lot of the thinking power to solely be done by
- 41:59Speaker 3: your CPU. It's not doing any rendering or anything like that.
- 42:03Speaker 3: So I would recommend you get a graphics card instead
- 42:06Speaker 3: of going the integrated route.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Would Ricky, Would Ricky need to go Matt all the
- 42:10Speaker 1: way to the fifty ninety or fifty.
- 42:12Speaker 3: I mean I saw that, I was no, I was
- 42:15Speaker 3: about to touch on that. If you are gaming, you
- 42:18Speaker 3: absolutely need a graphics card. If you are not a
- 42:21Speaker 3: PC gamer, you do not need to be buying the
- 42:24Speaker 3: new Nvidia fifty seventy fifty ninety or the Radion you know,
- 42:31Speaker 3: seventy nine hundred.
- 42:33Speaker 2: XTX like you don't.
- 42:34Speaker 3: You don't need to be spending you know eight nine
- 42:37Speaker 3: eight nine hundred one thousand dollars on a graphics card,
- 42:39Speaker 3: just like a a low to mid level will take
- 42:44Speaker 3: care of you, just find so to summarize all that, No,
- 42:48Speaker 3: you don't need a graphics card. Depending on what you're using,
- 42:51Speaker 3: you can go integrated. Just make sure that the processor
- 42:53Speaker 3: you buy has an integrated graphics you feature to it.
- 42:58Speaker 3: And I still would wreck amend going for a what's
- 43:02Speaker 3: called a discrete graphics card. That's that's just buying a
- 43:05Speaker 3: GPU and depending on what you're doing, tailor it to
- 43:08Speaker 3: your budget.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Right now, I'm wondering he's going through PC parts Picker.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Can't you go on to that site and actually say, well,
- 43:16Speaker 1: here's what I want processor wise, here's what I want
- 43:19Speaker 1: motherboard size, and it can pair up some of the
- 43:22Speaker 1: things like it may pair up it price range for
- 43:24Speaker 1: a graphics card on the lower end, and then of
- 43:27Speaker 1: course one on the upper end, and then of course
- 43:29Speaker 1: you have memory up Like.
- 43:30Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I like about PC part Picker is
- 43:32Speaker 4: that you have a compatible check mark, right, so whatever
- 43:36Speaker 4: you toss in, it's only going to recommend you compatible parts.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Well, this was the entire reason behind the guy that
- 43:46Speaker 1: created PC part picker was because he would build PCs
- 43:49Speaker 1: over and over again only to find that half the
- 43:52Speaker 1: parts that he bought were not compatible with each other.
- 43:55Speaker 1: So he actually quit. Well, he started the process, he
- 43:57Speaker 1: started the whole project, the PC part picker as a
- 43:59Speaker 1: side gig, but then it got to the point where
- 44:01Speaker 1: he was able to actually quit his job, as I
- 44:04Speaker 1: think it was a software engineer to do PC part
- 44:08Speaker 1: picker full time because this was becoming such a huge
- 44:12Speaker 1: issue for people that wanted to build PCs, was that
- 44:15Speaker 1: they did not know what pieces fit together.
- 44:18Speaker 3: We jokes that like building a PC as like adult
- 44:21Speaker 3: legos at this point, like you know, this slot goes,
- 44:25Speaker 3: this thing goes into this matching slot. But then we
- 44:29Speaker 3: have new technology that's come out that, while has provided benefits,
- 44:33Speaker 3: has also added in complications. You now have memory memory,
- 44:37Speaker 3: which used to just be like I need to make
- 44:39Speaker 3: sure that the memory is compatible with my motherboard for
- 44:42Speaker 3: like type in speed. Do I have a DDR four motherboard?
- 44:44Speaker 3: Do I have a DDR three motherboard? Now you need
- 44:46Speaker 3: to look and be like, oh, do I have an
- 44:48Speaker 3: Intel board? I need to buy the Intel memory feature
- 44:52Speaker 3: compatible RAM. Do I have an AMD motherboard? Then I
- 44:55Speaker 3: need to buy the AMD feature which is called Expo
- 44:58Speaker 3: compatible RAM.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Other Wise you.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Don't get that feature.
- 45:02Speaker 3: And it's just one more thing that that little compatibility
- 45:05Speaker 3: check mark is going to save your bacon. Because I'm
- 45:09Speaker 3: I'm a tech guy, but I'm not reading every single
- 45:12Speaker 3: tech blog, every single update that's coming out. And when
- 45:15Speaker 3: I was rebuilding a PC recently, I was like, what
- 45:18Speaker 3: is the a MD compatible RAM versus the Intel compatible RAM?
- 45:23Speaker 3: I felt like, mister incredible, Like math is mass?
- 45:27Speaker 2: RAM is RAM? Like what is going on?
- 45:30Speaker 1: Well, let's not forget too. Depending on the board that
- 45:34Speaker 1: Ricky's gonna get from PC parts Picker, he'll also have
- 45:38Speaker 1: to make a decision what does he want to do
- 45:39Speaker 1: as far as storage. Does he want to run the
- 45:43Speaker 1: M two? Does he want to run SSD or does
- 45:46Speaker 1: he want to go old school and run you know,
- 45:48Speaker 1: a spinney? They still tell him, I mean, which which
- 45:54Speaker 1: route is going to be the best for him to
- 45:57Speaker 1: go to?
- 45:58Speaker 3: I mean most motherboards now are coming with minimum to
- 46:03Speaker 3: of the M two slots, And to be honest, like
- 46:07Speaker 3: that's that's the only direction I'd be going at this point.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Like it, oh oh, I just just all right, justin
- 46:14Speaker 1: go ahead. I'm just gonna say, I just well, no,
- 46:18Speaker 1: I agree with Matt because I'm saying, if you're going
- 46:20Speaker 1: to build a brand new computer with today's technology and
- 46:23Speaker 1: still run a spinny drive, that's like you buying a
- 46:25Speaker 1: Ferrari and put an e eighty five ethanol gas into it,
- 46:29Speaker 1: you're not wrong.
- 46:30Speaker 2: He's not wrong at all wrong.
- 46:32Speaker 3: And M DOT two's run on a much much faster
- 46:38Speaker 3: interface because for drives, the the big bottleneck. You know,
- 46:42Speaker 3: you can have the fastest processor, the best graphics card,
- 46:46Speaker 3: enough ramnet choke a donkey, and if you're running on
- 46:50Speaker 3: a spinner drive that's got like then you're you're running
- 46:53Speaker 3: into a bottleneck of how fast your data can be
- 46:56Speaker 3: written and red and the fastest speed it's or on
- 47:00Speaker 3: MT two drives.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I was talking about to this is somebody the other
- 47:04Speaker 1: day and they were trying to tell me that M
- 47:06Speaker 1: two is less uh, it has less of a life
- 47:10Speaker 1: than an SSD, an actual you know SSD chip or
- 47:15Speaker 1: not chip, but drive in your computer. And I said,
- 47:18Speaker 1: where did you get that info from? They said, no, no,
- 47:21Speaker 1: we're they're seeing stories that the M two's are failing
- 47:24Speaker 1: at a higher rate than SSDs. And I thought, is
- 47:27Speaker 1: that the case. Have you guys heard anything about that.
- 47:31Speaker 2: I'm I'm brutal to my hard drives.
- 47:34Speaker 3: I'm sorry to my storage drives, and I haven't seen
- 47:36Speaker 3: anything like that.
- 47:37Speaker 4: I feel like it's got to be user error, because
- 47:40Speaker 4: I could feel like somebody just jamming it in there
- 47:43Speaker 4: and breaking it. That's going to be the number one.
- 47:45Speaker 1: We're putting it there and not putting the screw, We're putting.
- 47:48Speaker 4: It upside down, or not putting the standoff in or
- 47:50Speaker 4: something stuff like that.
- 47:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's to go back to something that Sean said
- 47:55Speaker 3: earlier about like when you're taking the CPU cooler off
- 47:58Speaker 3: and if you're like if you're starting to like really
- 48:01Speaker 3: pull on it and it's going not going anywhere.
- 48:03Speaker 2: When you are building.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Or disassembling a computer and you are having to force something,
- 48:09Speaker 3: you are not doing.
- 48:10Speaker 1: It right, I add more force. I did that. I
- 48:13Speaker 1: did that too. I did that to Glorious System when
- 48:16Speaker 1: I was building it. I could not get this thing
- 48:19Speaker 1: out of the socket, the cord that was in there,
- 48:22Speaker 1: and I was trying to get it to move it around,
- 48:23Speaker 1: and I pulled so hard I pulled it right off
- 48:25Speaker 1: the motherboard, the entire housing. So I was like, well,
- 48:29Speaker 1: that's not going to work.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Let me look, I'm going to microcenter.
- 48:32Speaker 1: Well, it didn't damage the board. I just ended up
- 48:34Speaker 1: buying a card and using that instead a plugging card,
- 48:37Speaker 1: so it cost me an extra thirty bucks. But I'll
- 48:40Speaker 1: tell you Samsung has actually just announced their new and
- 48:44Speaker 1: I don't know how you guys feel about Samsung's SSDs
- 48:47Speaker 1: or their M two's, but they've got one that they're
- 48:50Speaker 1: saying is now the world's fastest consumer drive fourteen point
- 48:55Speaker 1: eight gigabits per second. They're saying a PCIe five point
- 49:00Speaker 1: storage that will be available and it's going to sell
- 49:04Speaker 1: starting at one ninety nine ninety nine. No, I don't
- 49:07Speaker 1: know what that capacity is. And it comes with a
- 49:09Speaker 1: five year warranty, so, I mean five years is pretty good.
- 49:14Speaker 4: You just mentioned that the fourteen gig read writes. Yeah, right, okay,
- 49:18Speaker 4: so we're talking about if you want to get a
- 49:20Speaker 4: spinny drive versus an M two.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, what's the difference.
- 49:24Speaker 4: I looked up what the average like a read write
- 49:27Speaker 4: speed for a seventy two hundred rpm drive is. It's
- 49:31Speaker 4: anywhere between one hundreds two hundred megabytes per second. Oh man, Okay,
- 49:36Speaker 4: your low at your low end M two NVMe drive
- 49:42Speaker 4: is one to two and a half gigs, and this
- 49:47Speaker 4: is fourteen one thousand to two hundred one thousand to
- 49:50Speaker 4: twenty five hundred megabytes per second. So that's a literal
- 49:55Speaker 4: likely close to one hundred times or five to ten
- 49:58Speaker 4: times faster.
- 50:01Speaker 3: Just it's literally an order of magnitude in difference.
- 50:05Speaker 1: There. There you go, Yeah, you will you will see.
- 50:08Speaker 4: It feel a difference in your performance. And there's no
- 50:11Speaker 4: reason when some of them drives are still the same
- 50:16Speaker 4: price as one terabyte and VMEs.
- 50:20Speaker 3: And a Spinny drive is gonna die way before an
- 50:24Speaker 3: SSD or an envm E because it's got mechanical components.
- 50:29Speaker 3: Like we talked about Andy well shows ago where he's like,
- 50:32Speaker 3: I put in the drive and it started making a
- 50:34Speaker 3: clicking noise.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 50:36Speaker 3: All three of us were like, oh no, Like there
- 50:40Speaker 3: is a mechanical component to the Spinney drives. It's gonna
- 50:43Speaker 3: wear out. It is gonna die. It is not a
- 50:45Speaker 3: question of if. It is a question of when.
- 50:48Speaker 1: I'm still debating on whether I'm gonna send that drive in.
- 50:51Speaker 1: I bought the back, secondary, backup drive that they could
- 50:53Speaker 1: put it on, but seven hundred dollars. It's a great
- 50:56Speaker 1: deal that he's given me. But do I really want
- 50:58Speaker 1: the data that much?
- 51:00Speaker 4: Take it apart and use the magnets.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Ooh.
- 51:03Speaker 2: The magnets are super fun to play.
- 51:05Speaker 1: With the best. You can't get them off anything once
- 51:07Speaker 1: you put them on. Like I went on my file cabinet,
- 51:09Speaker 1: can't move it.
- 51:11Speaker 4: I take I take the magnets out, and I make
- 51:13Speaker 4: wind chimes with the platters. Oh.
- 51:16Speaker 3: There, and the wind chimes you make with the platters
- 51:19Speaker 3: because of how it reflects the light will actually attract
- 51:22Speaker 3: butterflies and honeybees.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Oh really, Well, there you go.
- 51:27Speaker 3: If you want to know why I know this, justin
- 51:29Speaker 3: you've met my wife. Does that shock you at all
- 51:31Speaker 3: that I know how to attract honeybees and butterflies?
- 51:34Speaker 1: No? It doesn't. Yeah, all right, actly, We got to
- 51:37Speaker 1: take another quick break. We come back with more of
- 51:39Speaker 1: tech Talk Radio. Remember you could drop as to the
- 51:41Speaker 1: email tech guys at tech talk radio dot com. I'm
- 51:44Speaker 1: Andy Taylor, I'm Sean de Weird, I'm Matt Jones, and
- 51:47Speaker 1: I'm Justin. Let me find us on Facebook at facebook
- 51:49Speaker 1: dot com for slash tech Talkers. We'll be right back
- 51:52Speaker 1: and now fact to tech Talk Radio.
- 51:55Speaker 3: So I was on my phone in my pixel watch because,
- 51:57Speaker 3: as we've discussed before, I live the Pixel ecosystem, and
- 52:02Speaker 3: I got to notice that. It was like, hey, Pixel
- 52:04Speaker 3: is making a change to your emergency SOS. You now
- 52:07Speaker 3: have to push this button five times and then confirm
- 52:11Speaker 3: to activate it. If I am in a car crash
- 52:14Speaker 3: bleeding out, how do you think I'm gonna be able
- 52:17Speaker 3: to click a button and then confirm it five times?
- 52:20Speaker 3: Hold on, leaking, femeral artery, give me one second.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Is there a reason why Pixel said, Uh, let's add
- 52:26Speaker 1: a couple of more of those button pushes just before
- 52:29Speaker 1: the SOS goes out.
- 52:30Speaker 3: The emergency feature is like, so the pixel phones have
- 52:33Speaker 3: like detect car crash like because it's got g sensor
- 52:37Speaker 3: in it. And I'll be like, okay, you were doing
- 52:39Speaker 3: sixty miles an hour, and then a millisecond later you
- 52:42Speaker 3: were doing zero miles an hour. And as Jeremy Clarkson said,
- 52:45Speaker 3: it's not going fast that has ever killed anyone.
- 52:48Speaker 2: It's the sudden stop that usually does it.
- 52:50Speaker 3: So your phone will detect your car crash, or the
- 52:53Speaker 3: pixel watch can detect when you have a nasty fall.
- 52:56Speaker 3: It's things where like you might be incapacitated, so we're gonna,
- 52:59Speaker 3: we're gonna SOS for you. But then you might have
- 53:02Speaker 3: some case where you're walking around at night, someone's following you,
- 53:05Speaker 3: and you want to like get the SOS feature going
- 53:07Speaker 3: notify your family. So I'm like, why did they do this?
- 53:10Speaker 3: And then I look and find out that threw a
- 53:12Speaker 3: mistake with the SOS. A gentleman's pictures of a sensitive
- 53:17Speaker 3: scantily clad nature.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Oh no, oh no.
- 53:21Speaker 3: Might have gone on a wide digital journey thanks to
- 53:25Speaker 3: the SOS.
- 53:26Speaker 1: So something happened and he didn't realize it, and it
- 53:32Speaker 1: sent out images that he probably would be very embarrassed at.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Maybe I was saying maybe because you never know what
- 53:38Speaker 1: people these days.
- 53:40Speaker 3: You don't, but I sure would have been like, imagine
- 53:44Speaker 3: getting that note because like when I when my if
- 53:47Speaker 3: my SOS triggers, my wife and my parents all get
- 53:51Speaker 3: a notification about it. Uh, imagine being on the receiving
- 53:54Speaker 3: end of that, like your husband has had a nasty
- 53:57Speaker 3: fall and send out in SOS. Oh my goodness, let
- 54:00Speaker 3: me look at Andy's naked.
- 54:05Speaker 1: What type of ball did he take?
- 54:07Speaker 3: Google? Can you can I get more details on this?
- 54:10Speaker 2: Because it is not a good.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Look, Sean. You're an Apple guy. The iPhone does the
- 54:17Speaker 1: same thing, but does it send out like a picture
- 54:20Speaker 1: or a text message.
- 54:21Speaker 4: I honestly have no idea. I've never looked into it.
- 54:24Speaker 4: I can't imagine it would.
- 54:25Speaker 1: But please please do not put us on your list
- 54:32Speaker 1: if you do that, Sean.
- 54:33Speaker 4: Oh, here the top of the list.
- 54:34Speaker 2: Of is shown.
- 54:37Speaker 3: If anything happens to you, just know that you know
- 54:39Speaker 3: thoughts and prayers.
- 54:40Speaker 2: And I wish you the best, but I don't need to.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Know, all right. So that's why you have the extra
- 54:44Speaker 1: buttons on the pixel. The emergency s O S that
- 54:47Speaker 1: you need to set up when you get your device
- 54:50Speaker 1: to who you wanted to text a case of something
- 54:53Speaker 1: happening to you, so in case you get lost somewhere,
- 54:56Speaker 1: or in case you need somebody to bring you some pants,
- 55:03Speaker 1: so s I need I don't even know where to
- 55:06Speaker 1: go for all right. That is it for this week's
- 55:10Speaker 1: tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Shonda Weird.
- 55:15Speaker 2: I'm Matt Jones. I'm gonna get banned.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Oh my god, and I'm justin let me find us
- 55:19Speaker 1: on that. We'll have a tech talk Radio dot Com.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Have yourselves a great week. We'll see you
