- 1:08Speaker 2: thing since the Coffin Nails banner. As Evan McPherson's game
- 1:13Speaker 2: winning field goal is flying toward the goalpost. On Saturday,
- 1:16Speaker 2: fans in the end zone unfurled a banner right between
- 1:20Speaker 2: the uprights that said coffin nails a nod to what
- 1:24Speaker 2: Dave Lapham and I usually say after the play that
- 1:27Speaker 2: clinches of Bengals win. It was much appreciated and more
- 1:31Speaker 2: proof that Bengals fans are the best and have made
- 1:35Speaker 2: the Jungle one of the loudest and toughest environments for
- 1:39Speaker 2: visiting teams in the NFL. Now time for radio replays
- 1:44Speaker 2: from an incredible come from behind win over Minnesota. With
- 1:49Speaker 2: four games left in the regular season, nearly forty percent
- 1:53Speaker 2: of the AFC has a record of seven and six
- 1:57Speaker 2: six out of sixteen teams, the Bengals are one of them,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and chances are only two of those six will make
- 2:06Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That makes today's.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Home game against the Minnesota Vikings critical and it is
- 2:13Speaker 2: time for the pig skin to fly. Here in the Jungle.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Browning throwing it deep for Jamar Chase. He's got it
- 2:22Speaker 2: as he makes an arms extended catch before going out
- 2:26Speaker 2: of bounds at the twenty yard line.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I'll tell you what that's an unbelievable throw because Jake
- 2:32Speaker 3: Browning got blown up.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Robbins with his right knee on the field turf. He
- 2:36Speaker 2: catches the long snap, puts the ball down. The kick
- 2:39Speaker 2: is knocked through by Evan McPherson, and the Bengals score
- 2:44Speaker 2: on their opening possession.
- 2:45Speaker 1: To take a three to nothing lead.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Trips out to the left, Hockinson out to the right,
- 2:50Speaker 2: Mullins looking throwing, intercepted at the goal line.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Mike Hilton running it back.
- 2:56Speaker 2: He stumbles and goes down at the seventy yard line.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Have the Bengals get a red zone takeaway? Three receivers left,
- 3:05Speaker 2: one out to the right. Mullins has the ball, He's
- 3:08Speaker 2: looking left. Here comes the rush. Mullets sacked by beaj Hill.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The ball comes out.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Have the Bengals recover with twenty seconds left in the half.
- 3:20Speaker 3: He came up with the ball.
- 3:22Speaker 2: They were all about two takeaways in the red zone
- 3:25Speaker 2: in the second quarter.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Unreal.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Everybody's standing up here in the jungle. Third down and
- 3:32Speaker 2: nine from the Cincinnati thirty eight. Nick Mullens clapping his hands.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Cincinnati sends five Bullins in trouble pros caught by Annison.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Nobody left to tackle him. He will streak down the
- 3:45Speaker 2: field and go into the end zone for a thirty
- 3:48Speaker 2: eight yard touchdown.
- 3:50Speaker 3: DJ Turner went for the deflection. He left his feet.
- 3:55Speaker 3: He went to make a play on the football, and
- 3:57Speaker 3: when he could not make a play on the football,
- 4:00Speaker 3: it was over.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Browning back to throw his pass for Higgins in the
- 4:04Speaker 2: end zone. Touchdown Bengals. A perfect throw from Jake Browning
- 4:12Speaker 2: and an over the shoulder catch for t Higgins for
- 4:15Speaker 2: the Bengals touchdown.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Don't mess around. First down in the red zone, go
- 4:20Speaker 3: for the gusto.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Browning drops back to throw four come after him. Browning
- 4:25Speaker 2: fires down the fields, caught by Chase. He's got a
- 4:29Speaker 2: first down at the nineteen a Minnesota shake. Browning putting
- 4:36Speaker 2: it right on the money for Jamar Chase. Browning's going
- 4:40Speaker 2: to be in the shotgun. Joe Mixon to his right.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Everybody bunched in tight. They handed to Mixon. He gets hit,
- 4:46Speaker 2: tries to go in a double effort and does. The
- 4:50Speaker 2: second effort gets the Bengals a touchdown as Joe Mixon
- 4:55Speaker 2: spikes the ball triumphantly after taking it in. He got
- 4:59Speaker 2: hit by Ivan Pace in between the one and the
- 5:02Speaker 2: two bounced off him, kept fighting and got in.
- 5:06Speaker 3: He was not gonna be denied.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Mullins sends another receiver in motion he will look to throw. Mullins,
- 5:13Speaker 2: standing now rolling to the right, being chased toward the sideline,
- 5:16Speaker 2: throws it into the end zone, caught by Addison for
- 5:19Speaker 2: the touchdown, and the Vikings have the lead with three
- 5:25Speaker 2: forty eight to go.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Forty eight seconds left in regulation.
- 5:28Speaker 2: On second and ten, Browning, scrambling right in trouble, throws
- 5:32Speaker 2: it off his back foot toward the end zone. T
- 5:35Speaker 2: Higgins wins a jump ball for the football, hits a touchdown,
- 5:41Speaker 2: an incredible catch by T. Higgins, and the Bengals have
- 5:45Speaker 2: scored with thirty nine seconds to go.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I can't believe what T Higgins just did.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Unreal. I mean Jake Browning to put it in the
- 5:54Speaker 3: area and then Higgins catches it at the one and
- 5:57Speaker 3: just throws it back without losing control of it. He
- 6:01Speaker 3: just swoops his arm over his head and the ball
- 6:04Speaker 3: crosses the goal line and the Bengals get a tying touchdown.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Can the Bengals stop Minnesota on fourth down in about
- 6:11Speaker 2: two inches in over time, which at the forty one
- 6:15Speaker 2: yard line.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Wouldn't you love to have DJ Reader in there for this.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Now Mullins will be under center, Chandler lined up behind him.
- 6:22Speaker 2: The Vikings try the bush. The Bengals appear to have
- 6:25Speaker 2: stopped in Cincinnati. Got a great search up front.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Head.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Looks like the Vikings lost yardage going for the touch push.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Let's see about the spot. It all comes down to
- 6:37Speaker 2: the spot.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Man, I'll tell you they got off the ball faster
- 6:41Speaker 3: than the offensive lineman did. I mean they get off
- 6:44Speaker 3: That defensive charge was unbelievable, I thought, man, is that
- 6:49Speaker 3: on side?
- 6:50Speaker 4: And it was?
- 6:51Speaker 2: The Bengals will take over at their own forty two
- 6:54Speaker 2: yard line on incredible job by the defense.
- 6:59Speaker 3: That's the first time all year Minnesota has been stopped
- 7:03Speaker 3: on fourth and one, and it was fourth in a
- 7:06Speaker 3: nature two.
- 7:07Speaker 1: The Vikings showing pressure.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Here comes the Blants, Browning looking scrambling to the right,
- 7:12Speaker 2: Browning throwing down field. It is Cod Tyler Boyd still
- 7:16Speaker 2: on his feet. He's at the twenty. He will be
- 7:19Speaker 2: brought down inside the fifteen. He's tackled at the thirteen.
- 7:24Speaker 2: An incredible throw in a narrow window by Jake Browning.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Tyler Boyd made the catch. Stayed on his feet. The
- 7:33Speaker 2: Bengals convert on third down and nine, and now they
- 7:37Speaker 2: are well within the field goal range of Evan McPherson.
- 7:41Speaker 2: This will be from twenty nine yards away from straightaway,
- 7:45Speaker 2: shorter than an extra point. Looking for the seventh walk
- 7:49Speaker 2: off field goal of his NFL career and his second
- 7:52Speaker 2: in a span of three weeks. Robbin's ready to hold
- 7:56Speaker 2: the snap, the placement, the right footed kick. Oh, it
- 7:59Speaker 2: is good, and the Bengals are still alive in the
- 8:05Speaker 2: playoff hut as they rally from a fourteen point deficit
- 8:10Speaker 2: in the fourth corner and beat them Minnesota Vikings in
- 8:14Speaker 2: over time twenty seven to twenty four. Now let's hear
- 8:20Speaker 2: from head coach Zach Taylor, who spent a few minutes
- 8:23Speaker 2: with Lap after the game.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Man, I've been saying it in the locker room the
- 8:28Speaker 3: whole time here, as the legendary Jim Volvano said, don't
- 8:32Speaker 3: give up, don't ever give up. I mean, that's this
- 8:35Speaker 3: football team. Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 5: I love these guys. You know, they just find a
- 8:39Speaker 5: way to overcome the adversity. There's a lot of diversity
- 8:42Speaker 5: in that game. I never panicked down fourteen points. Things
- 8:46Speaker 5: weren't going great. We weren't in great rhythm on offense
- 8:48Speaker 5: at first, and then on defense eventually, and then everybody
- 8:51Speaker 5: just came together and found a way to get it done.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Just to tick off, you know, I mean, just to
- 8:55Speaker 3: you know, there were plays to be made and take
- 8:58Speaker 3: advantage of and just couldn't quite make them in the
- 9:00Speaker 3: first half. But to come from behind twenty one points
- 9:03Speaker 3: scored in the fourth quarter against that defensive football team,
- 9:06Speaker 3: that's pretty remarkable.
- 9:07Speaker 5: I'm just proud of our guys, proud of the coaches
- 9:10Speaker 5: for the play that they prepare. That starts with Brian Callahan.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I thought he did a great job this week steering
- 9:15Speaker 5: that ship and guys believing in it. And again, just
- 9:18Speaker 5: sometimes it takes some time. You're playing a good defense.
- 9:19Speaker 3: It's tough.
- 9:20Speaker 5: It's an orthodox defense, and so it's not gonna be
- 9:23Speaker 5: perfect the whole game, and just got to hang in
- 9:24Speaker 5: there and find your moments, and our guys did.
- 9:26Speaker 3: What does it take to go against defense like that?
- 9:29Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, patients, you know it's not going to
- 9:31Speaker 3: always go the way you think, But I mean, what's
- 9:34Speaker 3: the biggest thing to attack in the defense like that?
- 9:36Speaker 3: That's so unorthodox?
- 9:37Speaker 5: I think just patients and try to stay one step ahead.
- 9:41Speaker 5: They throw a lot at you, so it can be
- 9:42Speaker 5: difficult to do. It starts with the quarterback not being
- 9:46Speaker 5: overwhelmed by all the different looks you can get, and
- 9:49Speaker 5: Jake did not. He was not overwhelmed. He did a
- 9:51Speaker 5: great job managing it. The guys around him did a
- 9:53Speaker 5: great job managing it. And I'll us to be successful.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Through for over three hundred yards, I think hit at
- 9:57Speaker 3: least eleven different receivers. I mean, he's he's tripping the
- 10:01Speaker 3: ball very very well, isn't he. He's done a great job.
- 10:03Speaker 5: You know, he blongs in this league and he's proven
- 10:05Speaker 5: that every week and he's proven it to this locker
- 10:08Speaker 5: room for a long time now. That's why he's gotten
- 10:09Speaker 5: the opportunity he has, and I'm really proud of him.
- 10:11Speaker 3: The touchdown run that Joe Mixon had was jaw dropping
- 10:15Speaker 3: to me. I'm like, dude, that's I mean, you talk
- 10:18Speaker 3: about second third effort.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Huge fourth down, got to get in. You know, that's
- 10:22Speaker 5: a game changing play right there. And he did it
- 10:24Speaker 5: very similar last week and he did again this week.
- 10:27Speaker 3: So they were five for five on fourth and one
- 10:29Speaker 3: coming into the football game. Fourth and one. You score
- 10:32Speaker 3: a touchdown fourth and two inches, they lose three inches.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I mean that ended up being a big deciding factor
- 10:38Speaker 3: in the football game. Fourth down in a scoch Yeah.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I saw our guys get a tremendous push on that
- 10:42Speaker 5: fourth down, you know, at the end of the game
- 10:43Speaker 5: to get him stopped, and it looked like he bobbled
- 10:45Speaker 5: a snap because of it. And so again, it was
- 10:48Speaker 5: very similar to when we beat Minnesota a couple of
- 10:49Speaker 5: years ago. Got a defensive stop at the same field
- 10:51Speaker 5: in overtime, gave the offense the ball, hit one big play,
- 10:54Speaker 5: and then Evan seals it for us.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Same score. Okay, I think it was yeah score. I'm
- 11:00Speaker 3: pretty sure, man, I'll tell you so. I know. I know.
- 11:03Speaker 3: It's one week at a time. Can you celebrate for
- 11:06Speaker 3: a while. Can you go home and celebrate this game
- 11:08Speaker 3: for a while. You're going right to Pittsburgh.
- 11:09Speaker 4: I can go home and relax.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not.
- 11:11Speaker 5: We're done with football for today. We'll pick up tomorrow morning,
- 11:14Speaker 5: you know. And it's a normal seven day week for once.
- 11:16Speaker 5: We haven't had a seven day week and since last year.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I think you know what you've done keeping this football
- 11:23Speaker 3: team fresh down the stretch is paying off once again.
- 11:27Speaker 3: But coach Man, what was the deal with the injury? Gods?
- 11:30Speaker 3: I mean, they took some took some shots at us today.
- 11:32Speaker 1: That's the way it works.
- 11:33Speaker 5: You know, sometimes it's gonna happen like that and we're
- 11:35Speaker 5: gonna have to have other guys step up, and you know,
- 11:37Speaker 5: it is tough to see, you know, a key player,
- 11:39Speaker 5: especially like DJ Reader go down and hopefully hopefully it
- 11:42Speaker 5: doesn't get us elsewhere.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Appreciate your time, A full week of preparation for the
- 11:47Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers. They're in trouble. Appreciate you. Thank you.
- 11:51Speaker 2: The Bengals have leap fraud the Steelers and climb to
- 11:54Speaker 2: the number six playoff seed in the AFC seven teams
- 11:59Speaker 2: get in. Cincinnati is currently at two and a half
- 12:02Speaker 2: point favorite for Saturday's game in Pittsburgh. Now time for
- 12:07Speaker 2: the radio guy's recap lap. That was an amazing, memorable game.
- 12:13Speaker 2: So many key plays that the Bengals absolutely had to
- 12:16Speaker 2: make and made to get out of here with an
- 12:19Speaker 2: overtime win.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Yeah, in the first half they had things, opportunity knocked
- 12:24Speaker 3: and they didn't answer. They didn't make the plays in
- 12:27Speaker 3: the second half, particularly.
- 12:28Speaker 2: The fourth quarter.
- 12:29Speaker 3: They made every play they could possibly make, and some
- 12:33Speaker 3: of them were acrobatic, phenomenal, just crazy plays to make,
- 12:37Speaker 3: and they made every single one of them. And you
- 12:39Speaker 3: score twenty one points in the fourth quarter against Brian
- 12:42Speaker 3: Flor's defense the way they're playing, that's mind boggling stuff,
- 12:46Speaker 3: it really is.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Jake Browning was incredible in the second half. He threw
- 12:50Speaker 2: for nearly three hundred yards in the second half, I believe,
- 12:54Speaker 2: and obviously made so many plays where he had to
- 12:57Speaker 2: extend the play, avoid the rush, find somebody open downfield,
- 13:01Speaker 2: and deliver the ball.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I mean, the gold star on the forehead play of
- 13:07Speaker 3: what you're describing was the one that Tyler Boyd to
- 13:10Speaker 3: basically set the game winning field goal up. Tyler Boyd's
- 13:13Speaker 3: on the left side of the formation outside the numbers.
- 13:16Speaker 3: When the play starts and Jake gets out of pocket,
- 13:18Speaker 3: he has to create an extent and Tyler Boyd scrambled
- 13:20Speaker 3: drill and Jake Browning on the run throws right between
- 13:25Speaker 3: two defenders into the arms of Tyler Boyd for a
- 13:28Speaker 3: huge play. That's hard to do. That's hard to be
- 13:32Speaker 3: that accurate with that kind of touch and timing on
- 13:35Speaker 3: the run like that, and he I think he's always
- 13:37Speaker 3: been a pretty good thrower of the football on the run.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Do we know how T.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Higgins held the ball, swirled it behind his back, held
- 13:47Speaker 2: onto the ball and got it over to the pylon
- 13:49Speaker 2: on that one touchdown?
- 13:50Speaker 3: When you think about it, think of all the things
- 13:53Speaker 3: that had to go through his mind in just instance,
- 13:56Speaker 3: you know, I mean just a milliseconds to be aware,
- 14:01Speaker 3: catch it, I'm in bounds, Stay in bounds and take
- 14:04Speaker 3: that ball and just you know, make the arc over
- 14:07Speaker 3: my head to break the plane inside the pylon. I mean,
- 14:11Speaker 3: that's that's just uh, that's football awareness, football savvy. H
- 14:17Speaker 3: And he's he's such a gifted athlete. I mean his size,
- 14:20Speaker 3: speed ratio, is ability to run routes, contested catch, strong hands.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I mean he checks a ton of boxes. There's no question.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Do we know who deserves credit for the fourth down?
- 14:32Speaker 2: Stop? You o? T?
- 14:34Speaker 3: I mean BJ Hill? I think he. I think he
- 14:37Speaker 3: was low, Zach Carter was hot. They both came off
- 14:39Speaker 3: the ball like a banchie. I mean the interior that
- 14:42Speaker 3: defensive line just did a heck of a job. And
- 14:44Speaker 3: I was kidding bj Hill after the game, I said,
- 14:47Speaker 3: what about linebacker. Man, the hands you have, you got
- 14:49Speaker 3: two interceptions. There's defensive backs in the league that have
- 14:51Speaker 3: played a lot of snaps that don't have one man
- 14:53Speaker 3: they're all they're all waiting for their first interceptions of
- 14:57Speaker 3: the season, and you're racking them up. He said, what
- 15:00Speaker 3: ever takes? I mean, he said, I told you I
- 15:02Speaker 3: was an athlete. He is. I mean, he's he's a
- 15:04Speaker 3: good athlete.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Eight and six, three to go. They're obviously very much
- 15:09Speaker 2: alive in the playoff race, but with lots of work
- 15:11Speaker 2: still to do.
- 15:12Speaker 3: No doubt, lots of work to do. They get a
- 15:15Speaker 3: chance now to sit back and watch the Pittsburgh Steelers,
- 15:19Speaker 3: you know, in their in their contest, so you can
- 15:22Speaker 3: get a jump on preparation, you know, for that football game,
- 15:25Speaker 3: but you know, not not studying it like you would
- 15:29Speaker 3: you know, on a normal work day. But it's never easy.
- 15:34Speaker 3: I can tell you for a fact, going to Pittsburgh
- 15:35Speaker 3: and playing the Steelers is never an easy task, no
- 15:39Speaker 3: matter what the stakes, what the circumstances. But they've proven
- 15:42Speaker 3: themselves to be human. I mean, the last the last
- 15:44Speaker 3: two home games to lose. The teams that they lost
- 15:47Speaker 3: to very very Unsteeler like I mean, Mike Tomlin must
- 15:50Speaker 3: be beside himself.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It's kind of interesting to watch Jake Browning in this
- 15:54Speaker 2: game because he couldn't do some of the things that
- 15:57Speaker 2: have worked so well the last couple of weeks. They
- 15:59Speaker 2: didn't get a hunt plus rushing yards. They didn't get
- 16:01Speaker 2: a ton of big playsoff screen passes. He kind of
- 16:04Speaker 2: had to be Burrow like and find open receivers under
- 16:08Speaker 2: pressure and deliver good throws.
- 16:10Speaker 3: He did. I mean he had to. He had to
- 16:12Speaker 3: put his nose to the grindstone, you know, in terms
- 16:14Speaker 3: of you know, he had to create an extent when
- 16:19Speaker 3: he could throw on time. He had to throw on
- 16:21Speaker 3: time and hit spots. And he did. He hit tight spots.
- 16:24Speaker 3: He played an outstanding football game. This guy is legit.
- 16:28Speaker 3: I mean, there is no doubt, you know, Zach started laughing.
- 16:31Speaker 3: He goes, you know, honestly, he goes, Jake Brownie did
- 16:33Speaker 3: a phenomenal job. He said, you know, really, you can't
- 16:36Speaker 3: ask for much more when we were talking after the game. So,
- 16:39Speaker 3: I mean, he is. He's basically turned his career down
- 16:46Speaker 3: a totally different path. There is no question about it.
- 16:49Speaker 3: And couldn't couldn't happen to a better guy and a
- 16:52Speaker 3: guy that's you know, works his tail off to get
- 16:55Speaker 3: that opportunity.
- 16:56Speaker 2: The win came with a hefty price. We saw DJ
- 16:58Speaker 2: Reader leave the locker room on crush, which is with
- 17:00Speaker 2: a big bulky brace on his right knee, the heart
- 17:03Speaker 2: and soul of the defensive line, one of the team
- 17:05Speaker 2: leaders on this team. And that's a very significant loss.
- 17:10Speaker 3: No question it is. I mean, ask when he's asking
- 17:12Speaker 3: Zach about that, he said, we don't have any final
- 17:15Speaker 3: determinations yet, but that one does not look good. I mean,
- 17:18Speaker 3: you know, he's realistic about it. I mean, he realizes
- 17:20Speaker 3: that the DJ season is probably over. Dj Ivy he's
- 17:24Speaker 3: not optimistic about either with his knee injury. And then,
- 17:27Speaker 3: of course the reaction that dj Ivy had. Whenever I
- 17:30Speaker 3: see grown men, tough guys, you know, in tears, it's
- 17:34Speaker 3: telling you that something bad happened that's jeopardizing their opportunity
- 17:38Speaker 3: ability to play. So those two injuries were you know,
- 17:42Speaker 3: obviously massive.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Saturday Number one was successful. Bring on the Steelers next
- 17:47Speaker 2: Saturday in Pittsburgh.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Bring on the Steelers and Joe Mixon that touchdown run
- 17:51Speaker 3: my man. Talk about inspirational. That was a gutsy run
- 17:57Speaker 3: run like that in Pittsburgh, Joe.

- 18:16Speaker 2: Kettering Health is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Finally,
- 18:21Speaker 2: it's time for this week's fun facts conversation. Normally this
- 18:25Speaker 2: segment is no more than fifteen minutes long. This week
- 18:29Speaker 2: I spent thirty eight minutes with a Bengals coach with
- 18:34Speaker 2: a remarkable story to tell. Time for some fun facts
- 18:38Speaker 2: with Tight Ends coach James Casey. Born and raised in Texas,
- 18:41Speaker 2: not far from fort Worth. Were you a city kid
- 18:44Speaker 2: or a country kid?
- 18:45Speaker 4: Country kid?
- 18:46Speaker 6: I'm from Azle, Texas outside of Fort Worth, and like
- 18:49Speaker 6: you know, being from Texas and everybody thinks DFW Dallas
- 18:53Speaker 6: Footworth area.
- 18:54Speaker 4: But for it's way different than use It's not. It's
- 18:57Speaker 4: more rural. It was a decent sized city. But I'm
- 19:00Speaker 4: definitely a country guy.
- 19:01Speaker 6: I got I bought some land in Texas, so when
- 19:03Speaker 6: I got opportunities my a little bit of free time.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Like I like getting out in the country.
- 19:06Speaker 2: What do you miss when you're away the.
- 19:09Speaker 6: I miss just the people, the hospitality, Like it is different,
- 19:12Speaker 6: Like you know, you know, everybody knows people from Texas
- 19:15Speaker 6: and how prideful they are of their state and and
- 19:18Speaker 6: it's it's it's valid. I mean, there's it's you grow
- 19:21Speaker 6: up there and you have pride in your state and
- 19:23Speaker 6: and just used to that southern hospitality. And I mean
- 19:26Speaker 6: Cincinnati has been awesome, Like Cincinnati's kind of it reminds
- 19:28Speaker 6: me of a little bit of Texas. So I'm really
- 19:30Speaker 6: glad I get the coach here in a great city
- 19:33Speaker 6: like this, Like the people here are are similar, like
- 19:36Speaker 6: just you know, down to earth people that are you know,
- 19:39Speaker 6: I'm used to, like, you know, the old school like
- 19:42Speaker 6: opening doors for people, saying, you know, please, thank you,
- 19:45Speaker 6: you're welcome, yes, ma'am, no, ma'am, yes, sir.
- 19:48Speaker 4: I guess that's kind of like the Texas stuff.
- 19:50Speaker 6: And I'm trying to raise my kids like that too,
- 19:52Speaker 6: and they I mean, it's it's strange, but sometimes that
- 19:54Speaker 6: you know, people are not used to that, and you know,
- 19:56Speaker 6: they almost feel like they're mocking them or something. It's like, no,
- 19:59Speaker 6: I'm just I'm just trying to be polite and I'm
- 20:01Speaker 6: trying to be There's the reason why they're called the
- 20:03Speaker 6: magic words, because it you know, you treat people nice,
- 20:06Speaker 6: treat respect, you're not mocking them. Like over time, I
- 20:08Speaker 6: think they understand that, you know, we're not trying to
- 20:11Speaker 6: you know, I say yes sir a lot and people say,
- 20:13Speaker 6: don't call me sir, like they're mad at me.
- 20:15Speaker 4: I know they're just kind of playing around by.
- 20:16Speaker 6: I'm just trying to be respectful, you know, I'm not
- 20:18Speaker 6: trying to be you know, be I'm not trying to
- 20:20Speaker 6: be mean or you don't make money or anything.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Just that's just how I am.
- 20:23Speaker 2: So James, this segment is called fun Facts, but it's
- 20:26Speaker 2: really your life story in ten to fifteen minutes, and
- 20:29Speaker 2: your life story includes heartbreak and a devastating loss. Your
- 20:34Speaker 2: mom passed away in a fire when you were sixteen
- 20:37Speaker 2: years old. I can't imagine the fear, I can't imagine
- 20:40Speaker 2: the trauma. How did you get through it?
- 20:43Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 20:43Speaker 6: I mean I never talked about it just because it's
- 20:45Speaker 6: bad emotionally, bad feelings and bad memories. But you know,
- 20:49Speaker 6: it's also if I do get a chance to speak
- 20:51Speaker 6: to kids or something, because you know, everybody deals with tragedies,
- 20:54Speaker 6: and some bigger than others, and you know, losing your
- 20:57Speaker 6: mom is a pretty big one. And in a trailer.
- 21:00Speaker 6: You know, I didn't grow up any money. I grew
- 21:01Speaker 6: up really poor and in Asil And I was at
- 21:05Speaker 6: school one day and they came and got me and
- 21:07Speaker 6: said my trailer burned down and my mom was inside.
- 21:09Speaker 6: So I mean I lost everything. So it was, uh,
- 21:12Speaker 6: you know, devastating.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Of course I didn't have.
- 21:14Speaker 6: The only I had was like backpack that I was,
- 21:17Speaker 6: that I was wearing, the clothes I was wearing that day,
- 21:18Speaker 6: and then my mom was gone. But so I mean
- 21:21Speaker 6: I was, of course, you know, devastated. The biggest thing
- 21:26Speaker 6: that got me over it was you know, it took
- 21:28Speaker 6: you know, like maybe like a week week later, just
- 21:31Speaker 6: you know, feeling sorry for myself, you know, kind of
- 21:34Speaker 6: down to the dumps, which happens.
- 21:35Speaker 4: To a lot of people.
- 21:36Speaker 6: You know, you deal with something like that, and a
- 21:37Speaker 6: lot of people, you know, turned to drugs or they
- 21:39Speaker 6: just turned just giving up and not caring. But eventually
- 21:42Speaker 6: came I had like a kind of like epiphany or
- 21:44Speaker 6: like awareness to say, like, well, my mom would not
- 21:47Speaker 6: have wanted me to just feel sorry for myself and
- 21:49Speaker 6: be moping around and and you know, making bad grades
- 21:52Speaker 6: in school and not trying in sports. So I just said,
- 21:55Speaker 6: you know, she would have wanted me to you know,
- 21:57Speaker 6: that happened. It's it's it's there's nothing can change about it.
- 22:00Speaker 6: So the only thing I could do is, you know,
- 22:02Speaker 6: try to make the best of whatever I can do
- 22:03Speaker 6: and make her proud. So you know, I really just said,
- 22:06Speaker 6: you know what, she would want me to do great
- 22:08Speaker 6: things and be good. And so after that happened, I
- 22:10Speaker 6: really picked it up even more so like my work ethic,
- 22:12Speaker 6: my my school, my sports, I just try to be
- 22:16Speaker 6: wanted to try to be the best just to just
- 22:18Speaker 6: because that's how I feel like you should do things
- 22:20Speaker 6: like try to maximize everything, all your potentials, and it's
- 22:23Speaker 6: like you don't want to let people down.
- 22:25Speaker 4: And so once.
- 22:26Speaker 6: I've realized that, and I had a ton of support
- 22:29Speaker 6: from the city, like azel text, like I had, I
- 22:31Speaker 6: had people buying me clothes, you know, I had there
- 22:33Speaker 6: was a guy that got me a truck, like you know,
- 22:36Speaker 6: I ended up having nicer things afterwards, I mean, a
- 22:39Speaker 6: terrible situation, but I had a lot of people around
- 22:41Speaker 6: me the helping me. And you know, my wife, you know,
- 22:44Speaker 6: I'm married high school sweethearts. We've been married in seventeen years,
- 22:47Speaker 6: so she came along ride for that. And like anything
- 22:51Speaker 6: in life, you need a lot of people helping you,
- 22:53Speaker 6: no matter how hard you work.
- 22:54Speaker 4: And I had a lot of people around me helping me.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Did you learn about the inherent goodness of people through that?
- 23:00Speaker 4: I did. Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 6: I learned about how how you know, we were speaking
- 23:04Speaker 6: of texts earlier, just how people there are, like genuinely
- 23:07Speaker 6: good people out there that are they don't want anything
- 23:09Speaker 6: in return, They're just they just want to help, especially
- 23:11Speaker 6: when you're young, you know.
- 23:12Speaker 4: But I also learned that.
- 23:14Speaker 6: You have to show you have to show some initiative
- 23:17Speaker 6: and some addition ambition first for people to help you.
- 23:21Speaker 6: You know, if I would have been a kid that
- 23:22Speaker 6: wasn't making I was making terrible grades, or I wasn't
- 23:25Speaker 6: trying hard in sports, I don't think I would.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Have had as much help. But everybody in the community,
- 23:29Speaker 4: like knew that I was.
- 23:30Speaker 6: You know, I made straight a's in school before that,
- 23:32Speaker 6: and I was I was good in sports.
- 23:34Speaker 4: I worked hard, I was tough.
- 23:35Speaker 6: So I think all the people that knew me and
- 23:38Speaker 6: knew my situation, they knew I was a kid that
- 23:40Speaker 6: like wanted to do well, and they knew I wasn't
- 23:43Speaker 6: like normal kids stuff. But I wasn't. I wasn't a
- 23:47Speaker 6: kid that was like, you know, trying to be disrespectful
- 23:49Speaker 6: all the time. So I think because because how I
- 23:52Speaker 6: was beforehand, that they knew I was like work.
- 23:55Speaker 4: I was a hard worker.
- 23:55Speaker 6: I did things. I tried to do things the right way.
- 23:57Speaker 6: So then I had a whole bunch of help because
- 23:59Speaker 6: of that. And then and they didn't want anything to
- 24:01Speaker 6: return there. You know, I had people that would, you know,
- 24:04Speaker 6: give me stuff and I didn't even know where.
- 24:05Speaker 4: It was coming from, and.
- 24:07Speaker 6: And not still just you know, if I wouldn't have
- 24:09Speaker 6: all that help, like who knows what I could have done.
- 24:11Speaker 6: You know, there's a lot of people in those same
- 24:14Speaker 6: circumstances where it goes you know, probably the majority of
- 24:16Speaker 6: people in those same circumstances where it goes downhill.
- 24:18Speaker 4: In her life.
- 24:19Speaker 6: But because I had all those people helping me it,
- 24:21Speaker 6: you know, I just used it as motivation.
- 24:24Speaker 4: I still do to this day.
- 24:25Speaker 6: Just trying to never want to let people down and
- 24:27Speaker 6: trying to achieve is you know, do the best I
- 24:29Speaker 6: can and achieve great things.
- 24:31Speaker 2: We're visiting the tight Ends coach James Casey. You were
- 24:34Speaker 2: a hard throwing pitcher as a kid. You got drafted
- 24:36Speaker 2: by the White Sox right out of high school and
- 24:38Speaker 2: spent four years in pro baseball, playing in places like Bristol,
- 24:42Speaker 2: Virginia and Great Falls, Montana. How would you describe the experience.
- 24:46Speaker 6: It was an unbelievable, valuable experience for me, like coming
- 24:48Speaker 6: out of high school in Azel, you know, dealing with
- 24:51Speaker 6: the story you just heard about my mom and having
- 24:53Speaker 6: even before that happened, and you know, I lived in
- 24:55Speaker 6: like really bad trailer. We had roaches, like we just
- 24:57Speaker 6: we didn't have a lot of money. So I grew
- 24:58Speaker 6: up real poor. And then I got drafted in baseball
- 25:01Speaker 6: in the seventh round. So I'm thinking I'm going to
- 25:03Speaker 6: the big leagues. I'm going to be an All Star.
- 25:05Speaker 6: And I was. I was talented. I mean I had
- 25:07Speaker 6: the potential to, but I didn't have the mindset. You know,
- 25:10Speaker 6: I was eighteen years old and never even really been
- 25:12Speaker 6: out of the city. And then I go play minor
- 25:14Speaker 6: League Baseball, and I'm traveling around on buses and the
- 25:17Speaker 6: minor leaguers don't make any money whatsoever. I had a
- 25:19Speaker 6: little bit of a signing bonus, but you know, I
- 25:21Speaker 6: thought I was rich at that time. But I think
- 25:23Speaker 6: my signing bonus was one hundred and twenty thousand, which
- 25:26Speaker 6: to me, it was like, I'm rich, you know, but
- 25:28Speaker 6: you know, big picture wise, that's not that's not going
- 25:30Speaker 6: to sustain me for my whole life. But I learned,
- 25:33Speaker 6: like it was a great experience getting to meet a
- 25:36Speaker 6: lot of different people. Being a professional athlete eighteen years old,
- 25:39Speaker 6: I learned a lot of valuable lessons. And then once
- 25:41Speaker 6: I got fired in baseball because I couldn't throw strikes
- 25:44Speaker 6: and I just I didn't have like any training as
- 25:46Speaker 6: a kid, so that was my only training.
- 25:48Speaker 4: It was professional.
- 25:49Speaker 6: And I've heard the two worst players, and I would
- 25:51Speaker 6: believe in the two worst players you can coach or
- 25:53Speaker 6: that are the players that don't do anything you say,
- 25:55Speaker 6: and then the player that does everything you say, like exactly.
- 25:58Speaker 4: I was. I was the kid that did everything they said.
- 26:00Speaker 6: Exactly, which you know, sometimes you know, coaches are great sometimes,
- 26:05Speaker 6: but sometimes coaches say some things that are more like,
- 26:07Speaker 6: you know, maybe it doesn't fit you as well, and
- 26:09Speaker 6: you got to you know, be respectful, but say you
- 26:11Speaker 6: know that that's not gonna work for me that well,
- 26:13Speaker 6: like I need to, I need to stick with some
- 26:15Speaker 6: of the stuff that got me here. So when I
- 26:18Speaker 6: when I got fired from baseball, and that's probably be
- 26:21Speaker 6: the next question, but I really took a lot of
- 26:22Speaker 6: valuable lessons about you know, like not and I was
- 26:25Speaker 6: worried about what everybody else was doing. Like so once
- 26:27Speaker 6: I let once that happened, I was like, I'm not
- 26:28Speaker 6: worried about what anybody else is doing.
- 26:30Speaker 4: And I'm not.
- 26:32Speaker 6: I'm not, you know, I'm rooting for everybody. There's more
- 26:35Speaker 6: than enough to go around for everybody, because when you're
- 26:37Speaker 6: in baseball, it's so individual. I caught myself like, you know,
- 26:41Speaker 6: want you know, like if somebody's out there pitching, I
- 26:43Speaker 6: was like, if they were doing well, I was like, man,
- 26:45Speaker 6: if he's doing well, he's gonna get called up.
- 26:47Speaker 4: And I'm not, which is a terrible mindset.
- 26:49Speaker 3: You know.
- 26:49Speaker 6: I should have been rooting for that guy and trying
- 26:51Speaker 6: to like learn learn things as much as I could
- 26:54Speaker 6: and and just not taking a lot of craft from people,
- 26:57Speaker 6: not being disrespectful, but also like being confident, you know,
- 27:00Speaker 6: Like I just learned how to be confident and make
- 27:03Speaker 6: sure I had no regrets on anything else I did.
- 27:04Speaker 6: So after I got fired in baseball, it's like I've
- 27:06Speaker 6: not had any regrets. Nobody's out working me. I'm always
- 27:09Speaker 6: going to be the guy that works hard on everybody else.
- 27:11Speaker 6: And because I'm if if like it's NFL coaching, if
- 27:14Speaker 6: it didn't work out, I'm still gonna hold my head
- 27:17Speaker 6: up because I know I'm doing everything I possibly can
- 27:19Speaker 6: to be a great coach and to help the tight
- 27:21Speaker 6: ends as much as I can.
- 27:23Speaker 2: You use the term fired as opposed to cut or released.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Is there a reason?
- 27:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't like to, you know, I'm pretty like
- 27:32Speaker 6: blunt with things like I don't like to sugarcoat things
- 27:34Speaker 6: like I mean, it's just my own personal thing, like
- 27:38Speaker 6: like when I was playing the NFL, Like I didn't
- 27:41Speaker 6: retire from the NFL. I got fired and then nobody
- 27:43Speaker 6: else hire me, Like I don't. I'm not trying to
- 27:46Speaker 6: like make myself feel better of anything. It's like, you know,
- 27:48Speaker 6: that's just part of life, you got, you know, and
- 27:50Speaker 6: it just like keeps me motivated. Because you don't want
- 27:52Speaker 6: to get fired. And I've been fired multiple times, been
- 27:55Speaker 6: fireding baseball and even even playing it. Playing football, I
- 27:59Speaker 6: got fired a couple of times, and then coaching, I've
- 28:01Speaker 6: already been you know, a couple of spots. And I
- 28:04Speaker 6: just don't, you know, like I know some people say
- 28:06Speaker 6: that they got released or and it's you know, it's
- 28:08Speaker 6: just semantics. But I just want to make you know.
- 28:11Speaker 6: I don't know why it is. But she's like, I
- 28:12Speaker 6: just don't want to.
- 28:12Speaker 4: I want to. I'm trying. I always how to be.
- 28:14Speaker 6: Humble and and I think sometimes just being open about
- 28:18Speaker 6: what really is happening, I think it helps other people
- 28:21Speaker 6: sometimes be more like you know, sometimes bad things happen
- 28:24Speaker 6: and you move on and make the best of it.
- 28:27Speaker 2: So after four years of minor league baseball, when you
- 28:29Speaker 2: realize you're not going to the big leagues, what were
- 28:32Speaker 2: your options in your own mind?
- 28:34Speaker 6: I mean, I had my my I got married at
- 28:37Speaker 6: twenty one to my high school sweetheart and we've been
- 28:40Speaker 6: married seventeen years, be eighteen years in December, and so
- 28:44Speaker 6: I got so we got married, and then two weeks
- 28:46Speaker 6: later I got fired in baseball.
- 28:47Speaker 4: So I'm like, oh, man, like, you know, hopefully she
- 28:50Speaker 4: doesn't leave me.
- 28:51Speaker 6: She she didn't likely, but my mindset was, I know,
- 28:53Speaker 6: I knew I was going to go to college.
- 28:55Speaker 4: That's why I was.
- 28:56Speaker 6: I was willing to get you know, I got drafted
- 28:59Speaker 6: high school, so I was willing to go play minor
- 29:00Speaker 6: league Baseball's because I knew, worst case scenario, I get fired,
- 29:04Speaker 6: I'm still going to go to college and graduate and
- 29:06Speaker 6: get a degree, and you know, you go into the
- 29:09Speaker 6: workforce and you know, make money and have a job,
- 29:11Speaker 6: have a career. I knew I was gonna do that.
- 29:12Speaker 6: I knew I was just enough to do that. So
- 29:15Speaker 6: after I got done with baseball, I was like, well,
- 29:18Speaker 6: I know I'm gonna go to college, and I know
- 29:20Speaker 6: I'm like an athletic guy. I've always worked out hard
- 29:22Speaker 6: and I've always been in good shape. I was a
- 29:24Speaker 6: good high school football player. I just got hurt my
- 29:27Speaker 6: senior year. I had two surgeries my senior on my
- 29:30Speaker 6: knee during the season, and I still played the last game.
- 29:33Speaker 6: That's why I tell the tit ends a lot of times,
- 29:35Speaker 6: like just to like it's about toughness, lesson and I
- 29:39Speaker 6: and I saw guys that played that I played with
- 29:40Speaker 6: in high school that went on to play college football,
- 29:42Speaker 6: and I was like, well, if I know I'm gonna
- 29:44Speaker 6: go to college, I have all my eligibility left, so
- 29:46Speaker 6: why not play football like I'm I was just you know,
- 29:49Speaker 6: we were talking before about just self efficacy, just a
- 29:52Speaker 6: lot of belief in myself that, you know, and just
- 29:54Speaker 6: watching watching when I was playing minorleagu baseball, just watching
- 29:58Speaker 6: college football and be like I I could do that
- 29:59Speaker 6: if I if I if baseball didn't work out. So
- 30:01Speaker 6: I was like, okay, I'm gonna I want to I'm
- 30:03Speaker 6: going to go to college, so you know I'm gonna
- 30:05Speaker 6: play football too.
- 30:06Speaker 4: So and nobody was contacted me. Obviously.
- 30:09Speaker 6: It's been you know, I've been in high school like
- 30:10Speaker 6: four years and I didn't really have any film. But
- 30:13Speaker 6: another adage like you know, you you know, you gotta
- 30:16Speaker 6: you always need help regardless what you're doing, and it
- 30:18Speaker 6: doesn't hurt to ask, you know. So the only way
- 30:20Speaker 6: you can get information out to college is like just
- 30:22Speaker 6: to send them things to go talk to them and
- 30:24Speaker 6: call them. And so I filled out like every questionnaire
- 30:27Speaker 6: from any college in Texas and out of state. I
- 30:30Speaker 6: sent like these this envelope full of my information and
- 30:34Speaker 6: and just silly stuff like I took a picture my
- 30:36Speaker 6: wife took a picture of myself in my tights, and
- 30:41Speaker 6: I thought it was douchey, but but I saw I
- 30:43Speaker 6: was just watching TV and I saw in the combine
- 30:45Speaker 6: they do it.
- 30:45Speaker 4: So I was like, well, and I knew I was
- 30:47Speaker 4: like as a baseball player.
- 30:48Speaker 6: So a lot of these college coaches are probably gonna
- 30:50Speaker 6: think I'm, you know, out of shape person or like
- 30:53Speaker 6: real skinny guys. So like I need a showing I'm
- 30:55Speaker 6: in good shape. And that's really what got me the opportunity. Long,
- 30:58Speaker 6: long story, but so I I just send that information
- 31:00Speaker 6: everywhere because I was going to go to college and
- 31:02Speaker 6: I was gonna see, well, if I'm gonna go, maybe
- 31:04Speaker 6: I can get a I didn't even know how scholarships work,
- 31:06Speaker 6: but I was like, maybe I can get a ten
- 31:07Speaker 6: percent scholarship or something.
- 31:09Speaker 4: I didn't even.
- 31:09Speaker 6: Realize it was like full scholarships until I got the
- 31:12Speaker 6: scholarship and I went to I went to junior colleges, Tarleton,
- 31:17Speaker 6: I went to everywhere, and no one was They were like, yeah,
- 31:19Speaker 6: we'd love for you to walk on, which is understandable
- 31:22Speaker 6: because I hadn't played in four years and I really
- 31:24Speaker 6: and I was on like a triple option offense. But long,
- 31:27Speaker 6: long story, but Rice took a chance on me and
- 31:29Speaker 6: gave me a scholarship to play defense, and I was
- 31:32Speaker 6: I jumped on it like right away and I didn't
- 31:34Speaker 6: and realizing it was a full scholarship and Rice's unbelievable university.
- 31:38Speaker 2: And so on.
- 31:40Speaker 6: You know, Once that happened, my life kind of really
- 31:42Speaker 6: like took a one eighty right there.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Like I was like, okay, I.
- 31:44Speaker 6: Got an opportunity, and I was like, I am, this
- 31:46Speaker 6: is not going to pass me by. And I was
- 31:48Speaker 6: like a mad man in college, like in a good way,
- 31:51Speaker 6: but I was.
- 31:51Speaker 4: I was.
- 31:52Speaker 6: All I did was football in school, like just NonStop,
- 31:55Speaker 6: and I worked out and it led to like successful
- 31:58Speaker 6: the field, and then I got opportunity to play.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Then did your teammates even really get to know you
- 32:03Speaker 2: considering how focused you were?
- 32:04Speaker 4: No?
- 32:05Speaker 6: No, I mean justin Hill, our running best coach was
- 32:09Speaker 6: the same year as me in college, and you know, now,
- 32:12Speaker 6: you know, we've known each other since college and we've
- 32:14Speaker 6: talked and we stayed in connections. But I was, I
- 32:18Speaker 6: didn't go out with the team at all. I didn't
- 32:20Speaker 6: go at any parties. I didn't, but I was also
- 32:23Speaker 6: you know, I was I wasn't like being a jerk
- 32:25Speaker 6: to anybody, and I was just doing my job and
- 32:28Speaker 6: trying to help any wherever I could. And I just
- 32:30Speaker 6: so focused on just winning. I wanted to win, you know,
- 32:32Speaker 6: and I wanted to be the best I could possibly be.
- 32:35Speaker 6: That I think and credits, I mean, unbelievable just experience
- 32:39Speaker 6: at Rice, because everybody there, they didn't treat I was
- 32:42Speaker 6: day one, I was oldest on the team, and I
- 32:44Speaker 6: was the only married gall on the team, like the
- 32:46Speaker 6: first day I got on campus on football, on the
- 32:49Speaker 6: football team, and they just they didn't treat me any differently.
- 32:52Speaker 6: And I was twenty three, I think my freshman year married,
- 32:55Speaker 6: you know, like I'm not.
- 32:56Speaker 4: I'm just I wasn't. I was kind of and with what.
- 32:59Speaker 6: Happened to my mom with getting fired in baseball. So
- 33:02Speaker 6: I was a mature twenty three year old, like I
- 33:04Speaker 6: was they you know, I was kind of almost acting
- 33:07Speaker 6: like I am now a little bit.
- 33:08Speaker 4: I was more as a thirty nine year old.
- 33:10Speaker 6: You know, you get mature as you get older and
- 33:11Speaker 6: you kind of start understanding what's important. So I was
- 33:13Speaker 6: a mature person like I was basically a professional football
- 33:16Speaker 6: player playing in college, and but they were they were
- 33:19Speaker 6: They respected me, they didn't treat men differently, and and
- 33:22Speaker 6: you know, even though I didn't hang out with them
- 33:24Speaker 6: off the field, they still they still knew I cared,
- 33:26Speaker 6: and they knew I was working hard and I was
- 33:27Speaker 6: trying to help whatever way I could, and and I
- 33:30Speaker 6: eventually started doing well on the field. So then then
- 33:32Speaker 6: doing great on the field makes everything better. So then
- 33:35Speaker 6: they all just accepted me. And it was and I
- 33:37Speaker 6: still stand, you know, contact with a lot of those players.
- 33:39Speaker 6: And then I played with at Rice and it was
- 33:42Speaker 6: a you know, it really just an amazing experience. I
- 33:44Speaker 6: went in the Hall of Fame at Rice this last
- 33:47Speaker 6: this offseason or really before he played the forty nine ers,
- 33:49Speaker 6: and I was one of the most memorable experiences I've had,
- 33:53Speaker 6: getting around my former teammates and coaches and and just
- 33:57Speaker 6: thinking back to it, because you know, it's hard to
- 34:00Speaker 6: reminisce in life sometimes because you're just focused on the
- 34:03Speaker 6: next step. But when something like that happens, getting into
- 34:06Speaker 6: the Hall of Fame of your college, you kind of
- 34:07Speaker 6: you can't help, but like thinking back, and it really
- 34:09Speaker 6: just like just unbelievable memories of getting going from baseball
- 34:14Speaker 6: to college football. I only played there two years, my
- 34:16Speaker 6: true freshman, true sophomore year, and just what I was
- 34:20Speaker 6: able to accomplish in those two years is really it's
- 34:23Speaker 6: just amazing it. But it wouldn't happen if I didn't have,
- 34:26Speaker 6: like everything, a lot of great people around me. I
- 34:28Speaker 6: had a lot, like a lot of great help, a
- 34:29Speaker 6: lot of great teachers, coaches, you know, teammates that were
- 34:34Speaker 6: at Rice and at Azel and at you know, everywhere,
- 34:36Speaker 6: And I've just had great people around me and great
- 34:38Speaker 6: coaches around me to help me, and I've kind of
- 34:40Speaker 6: just been really blessed to be in great situations.
- 34:43Speaker 2: You got moved from defense to offense at Rice and
- 34:46Speaker 2: had two tremendous seasons your final year one hundred and
- 34:48Speaker 2: eleven catches for more than thirteen hundred yards, fifty seven
- 34:52Speaker 2: rushes for two hundred and forty one more. You're listed
- 34:55Speaker 2: as a tight end. But how would you describe your
- 34:57Speaker 2: position at Rice?
- 34:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I was.
- 35:00Speaker 6: I mean, it's a long story about how I kind
- 35:02Speaker 6: of got in those situations. But I started off as
- 35:04Speaker 6: a linebacker and then the second day they moved me
- 35:07Speaker 6: to a defensive end. So I played defensive end the
- 35:09Speaker 6: whole spring, and because I got there in the spring
- 35:12Speaker 6: and I was probably gonna be the starting defensive end,
- 35:14Speaker 6: but I kept staying after practice each spring practice and
- 35:17Speaker 6: like playing catch to show the coaches that I could
- 35:19Speaker 6: throw really well. Because when I was trying to recruit
- 35:21Speaker 6: myself to college, I was I was trying to be
- 35:23Speaker 6: a quarterback, because you know, obviously I drafted in baseball.
- 35:26Speaker 6: It's a picittuer like I could throw the ball. I
- 35:27Speaker 6: could throw the ball well, and and I just kept
- 35:30Speaker 6: kind of showing them like I was. I wasn't being disrespectful.
- 35:32Speaker 6: I was like, hey, I think I was just being honest,
- 35:34Speaker 6: like I'm not I can play defense, and I think
- 35:37Speaker 6: I would have been a really good defensive player. But
- 35:39Speaker 6: I was like, I think I could help this team
- 35:40Speaker 6: better if I w on offense, Like if that's what
- 35:42Speaker 6: I've done my whole life.
- 35:42Speaker 4: I've always been you know, even.
- 35:44Speaker 6: When I was a little kid, I was like the
- 35:45Speaker 6: running back or and so I was trying to show
- 35:49Speaker 6: them that I think I could help on offense, and
- 35:51Speaker 6: they eventually moved me to quarterback. So I went from
- 35:54Speaker 6: defensive end all spring, and then after spring they moved
- 35:58Speaker 6: me to the quarterback position during the some so the
- 36:00Speaker 6: whole team was like, what are you were just playing defense, Sven,
- 36:02Speaker 6: now you're the quarterback.
- 36:03Speaker 4: Like it's just you know, it never happens like that.
- 36:06Speaker 6: But and because the way that happened too, I just
- 36:08Speaker 6: kept showing them I could throw being respectful. And then
- 36:12Speaker 6: they would have seven on seven tournaments during the or
- 36:14Speaker 6: games during the summer, and they'd be working on their
- 36:17Speaker 6: stuff and I'd always just go out with the offense
- 36:19Speaker 6: and just kind of just stand there and watch and
- 36:21Speaker 6: try to learn. And a couple of times the running
- 36:23Speaker 6: back didn't show up so he had school or something,
- 36:26Speaker 6: so they would just put.
- 36:27Speaker 4: Me in there.
- 36:27Speaker 6: And even though it's a defensive end, I'd play some
- 36:29Speaker 6: running back for our offense during seven on seven stuff,
- 36:32Speaker 6: and I just kind of got around those guys and
- 36:34Speaker 6: just almost still doing defensive men stuff. And then eventually
- 36:37Speaker 6: the coaching staff, you know, gave me an opportunity to
- 36:38Speaker 6: do so when we came back from fall camp, I
- 36:40Speaker 6: moved to quarterback. And then we had some receivers get
- 36:42Speaker 6: hurt in training camp, so the backup quarterbacks are the
- 36:45Speaker 6: only ones that knew all the offense, you know, like
- 36:47Speaker 6: halfway through training camp, so they're like, hey, we need
- 36:49Speaker 6: you guys to go out there and.
- 36:50Speaker 4: Do some receiver stuff.
- 36:52Speaker 6: So then I showed up at practice doing receiver stuff
- 36:54Speaker 6: and the team was like, now you're doing receivers.
- 36:56Speaker 4: You have a defense simended quarterback to receiver.
- 36:58Speaker 6: And I did a really good job at receiver and
- 37:00Speaker 6: the receivers coach started liking what I was doing, so
- 37:03Speaker 6: then he you know, I was kind of like bouncing
- 37:04Speaker 6: back and forth from positions. And I still stayed in
- 37:06Speaker 6: the quarterback room the whole time there, and I would
- 37:09Speaker 6: learn the quarterback stuff. But we had a great quarterback,
- 37:11Speaker 6: Chase Clement, who I mean his senior year he threw
- 37:13Speaker 6: forty four touchdowns seven interceptions, and he was really good,
- 37:18Speaker 6: so that, you know, they didn't need me at quarterbacks
- 37:19Speaker 6: how good he was. But they started getting me more
- 37:21Speaker 6: involved at at receiver, and then I started doing wildcat
- 37:25Speaker 6: quarterback stuff. And then they just kind of started evolving
- 37:28Speaker 6: where I started doing all kinds of stuff like and
- 37:30Speaker 6: they I mean, credit to them. That's the advantages of
- 37:33Speaker 6: being in a place like rights. They gave me a
- 37:35Speaker 6: lot of opportunities to do a bunch of different stuff.
- 37:37Speaker 6: And the main reason why, I think because I was
- 37:40Speaker 6: willing to do it, and mainly is because of the
- 37:42Speaker 6: baseball didn't work out. So I was like, this is
- 37:43Speaker 6: not I don't care what I gotta do. I returned
- 37:46Speaker 6: punts just because I was like, I can do this.
- 37:48Speaker 6: But we had a guy, you know, that wasn't doing
- 37:51Speaker 6: a great job pumper turning. I just started going back there.
- 37:53Speaker 6: I started catching the punt, and eventually they just let
- 37:55Speaker 6: me do in games. So I started being the pumper turner.
- 37:57Speaker 6: I was a holder on field goal. I was like
- 37:59Speaker 6: backup punter, backup snapper. I played, you know, wildcat, quarterback
- 38:03Speaker 6: of punch. I played a little bit of tight end.
- 38:05Speaker 6: I really didn't even do tight end much. But I
- 38:08Speaker 6: played receiver. You know, I just played everywhere just because
- 38:11Speaker 6: I wanted to win so bad. I wanted to make
- 38:13Speaker 6: sure this opportunity was not gonna pass me by. And
- 38:16Speaker 6: and I wasn't afraid, and I wasn't scared. I wasn't
- 38:19Speaker 6: I believed in myself. I believed I could help, and
- 38:21Speaker 6: so any opportunity I jumped at it, no matter what
- 38:23Speaker 6: it was. And eventually they started put me in the games,
- 38:26Speaker 6: and then I started doing great job in the game
- 38:28Speaker 6: and it just kind of took off from there.
- 38:31Speaker 2: You turned pro after two years at Rice and were
- 38:33Speaker 2: drafted in the fifth round by the Houston Texans. After
- 38:36Speaker 2: all you had been through. What was it like to
- 38:39Speaker 2: get that phone call?
- 38:40Speaker 6: I mean, I was pissed at the time, because I
- 38:43Speaker 6: was very confident that. I mean, I had one hundred
- 38:45Speaker 6: and eleven catches and like thirteen or yards, and I
- 38:47Speaker 6: had like you know, you know, I carried the ball
- 38:49Speaker 6: as a runner and you know, in the wildcat quarterback
- 38:52Speaker 6: and I played running back to a little bit. So
- 38:54Speaker 6: like I feel like I had like an amazing year
- 38:56Speaker 6: in college football. I was only that true sophomore, and
- 38:59Speaker 6: I looked a right, I'm watching around college football and
- 39:01Speaker 6: I'm you know, everybody does when you go into the draft,
- 39:04Speaker 6: you know, you go to the combine, You're looking to
- 39:05Speaker 6: see who all the other tight ends are, and I'm like,
- 39:08Speaker 6: I'm very confident that I'm better than a lot of
- 39:10Speaker 6: those guys. But the draft comes and I'm getting, you know,
- 39:13Speaker 6: I don't know where I have, which number of tight
- 39:16Speaker 6: end I was drafted, But the Texans drafted a tight
- 39:19Speaker 6: end in the fourth round that same year. And once
- 39:22Speaker 6: they did that, I was like, this is unbelievable. It's like,
- 39:24Speaker 6: what else do I got to do?
- 39:25Speaker 1: You know?
- 39:25Speaker 6: Like I did everything. I knew everything a new quarterback,
- 39:29Speaker 6: I knew running back, a new receiver. I played every position,
- 39:31Speaker 6: I played punt returns like that. Obviously I'm showing that
- 39:34Speaker 6: I'm a good player and I'm a value I can
- 39:36Speaker 6: do something for your NFL team. But I didn't get draft,
- 39:39Speaker 6: you know, and I see now as NFL coach because
- 39:41Speaker 6: I really didn't get to play tight end in college,
- 39:43Speaker 6: so I didn't really show them that. And I couldn't
- 39:45Speaker 6: play any All Star games because I was underclassman, so
- 39:48Speaker 6: they had a lot of questions on me if I
- 39:49Speaker 6: could block or not. So I was and then they
- 39:52Speaker 6: the Texans drafted a guy and I lived like a
- 39:55Speaker 6: mile from the stadium at the time because I was
- 39:57Speaker 6: going to college at Rice, right next to the right
- 40:00Speaker 6: run in Houston.
- 40:01Speaker 4: So I was mad.
- 40:02Speaker 6: I was like, man, what is going on? But so
- 40:04Speaker 6: they drafted got a fourth round. Then they drafted me
- 40:05Speaker 6: in the fifth round. So then I was like, okay,
- 40:08Speaker 6: I got drafted. I was mad because I'll believe to
- 40:11Speaker 6: myself but I was still extremely grateful just to you know,
- 40:13Speaker 6: like I got drafted in baseball and then football, so
- 40:16Speaker 6: I was, you know, it's like I'm entitled or anything.
- 40:18Speaker 6: I was just you know, mad at that I you know,
- 40:21Speaker 6: I wasn't valued as much as what you know, I
- 40:23Speaker 6: thought I was.
- 40:24Speaker 4: But day one, you know, I couldn't. I enjoyed it
- 40:26Speaker 4: for like a day.
- 40:27Speaker 6: But then I was like, I'm a fifth round pick
- 40:29Speaker 6: and they drafted their fourth round tight end. It's like
- 40:30Speaker 6: for me to make this team is going to be
- 40:32Speaker 6: really difficult. And being an older you know guy, I
- 40:35Speaker 6: was like, I understand, like getting drafted doesn't me anything.
- 40:38Speaker 6: You know, you got to get on the fifty three
- 40:39Speaker 6: minute roster. I'm not a first round pick.
- 40:40Speaker 4: I'm not. I got to make the team.
- 40:42Speaker 6: So I was just dead set on and I never
- 40:45Speaker 6: even played tight end really, so I had to show
- 40:46Speaker 6: that I could play tight end. So I had to learn,
- 40:49Speaker 6: you know, like I didn't really I never even got
- 40:50Speaker 6: a three point stances in college. I had to learn
- 40:52Speaker 6: how to get into three point stands. I had to
- 40:53Speaker 6: learn how to block.
- 40:54Speaker 4: I had to show that I was tough because I
- 40:55Speaker 4: was a pass catcher in college. I didn't block a lot.
- 40:58Speaker 6: And that's what I'm really most proud of about NFL wise,
- 41:01Speaker 6: is that I came in as a you know, I
- 41:03Speaker 6: caught one hundred eleven passes.
- 41:04Speaker 4: I'm a pass catcher guy.
- 41:05Speaker 6: But then you know, after my career Kep, you know,
- 41:08Speaker 6: after the first couple of years, then I was more.
- 41:09Speaker 6: I transitioned more like a blocker guy. I played fullback,
- 41:12Speaker 6: played special teams. So I completely changed my game because
- 41:15Speaker 6: I learned early on in training camp that first, you know,
- 41:19Speaker 6: that first week, you know, like they're not They're not
- 41:22Speaker 6: throwing me the ball, Like I'm not catching the ball.
- 41:24Speaker 6: Here we got Andre Johnson, we got we know, we
- 41:26Speaker 6: got all these really good players, Like I'm not going
- 41:29Speaker 6: to catch the ball. So I'm like, I need to
- 41:30Speaker 6: find ways to make myself valuable. So I was like,
- 41:34Speaker 6: I gotta be special teams was number one. I's like,
- 41:36Speaker 6: I got to be show that I'm tough and I
- 41:37Speaker 6: can play special teams. And then I got I got
- 41:39Speaker 6: to show I can play full back, I could be tough,
- 41:40Speaker 6: I can do a lot of different things so I
- 41:42Speaker 6: can make the team. And kind of like Drew does
- 41:45Speaker 6: for us a little bit, like he does all kinds
- 41:47Speaker 6: of stuff. He just shows that he's valuable and helps
- 41:48Speaker 6: the team out in a lot of ways that are
- 41:50Speaker 6: like that. People don't realize, but in the football team,
- 41:53Speaker 6: the coaches and the players, they realize how important those
- 41:55Speaker 6: things are. And I mean, it was amazing that I
- 41:59Speaker 6: got you know, I was. I did enjoy it, you know,
- 42:00Speaker 6: I was like this unbelievable. I got drafted in football.
- 42:03Speaker 6: And my wife didn't even know I was good at football,
- 42:05Speaker 6: you know, like going into Rice. She she we started
- 42:08Speaker 6: dating as a junior, and you know, I kind of
- 42:11Speaker 6: got hurt. I didn't really play a lot of football
- 42:12Speaker 6: and I didn't really even get recruited in college, which
- 42:15Speaker 6: is I don't know how I didn't. I don't know
- 42:17Speaker 6: what these what those recruiters are doing. But so and
- 42:19Speaker 6: then when I told her when I got fired in baseball,
- 42:21Speaker 6: I told her I was gonna play college football. She
- 42:23Speaker 6: you know, she was great with it, but I'm sure
- 42:24Speaker 6: in her mind she was like, Okay, well I hope this.
- 42:27Speaker 6: And then all of a sudden, I'm great and I
- 42:28Speaker 6: go to the NFL and she's like, I'm like, I
- 42:30Speaker 6: see howney, you need to believe me.
- 42:31Speaker 4: Sometimes I am pretty good.
- 42:34Speaker 2: So you lasted seven years in the NFL with Houston,
- 42:37Speaker 2: Philly and Denver. What did you love most about being
- 42:41Speaker 2: an NFL player?
- 42:42Speaker 6: The you know the reason why I'm coaching. I love
- 42:46Speaker 6: the I love everything about football. I mean it is
- 42:49Speaker 6: to me, it's like one of the greatest things on
- 42:51Speaker 6: earth is that you get all these different people together
- 42:55Speaker 6: and it's a true team sport where everybody, you know,
- 42:57Speaker 6: on offense, we get eleven guys out there, All eleven
- 43:00Speaker 6: those guys got to do their job and got to
- 43:01Speaker 6: be If one guy doesn't do it right, that could
- 43:04Speaker 6: completely kill the play. And there's so much strategy that
- 43:07Speaker 6: goes into it that, you know, I wish some of
- 43:09Speaker 6: the fans and people could see how much goes into
- 43:13Speaker 6: like the past protection stuff, how much goes into the
- 43:14Speaker 6: run game stuff, and the different you know angles the
- 43:17Speaker 6: defensive ends are playing, and how the linebackers play and
- 43:20Speaker 6: special teams.
- 43:21Speaker 4: What kind of return are they doing? Like who's going
- 43:22Speaker 4: to be blocking me? What kind of guy is that?
- 43:24Speaker 1: Is?
- 43:24Speaker 2: He?
- 43:24Speaker 4: Big? Big guys? He quick?
- 43:26Speaker 6: Like there's just so much strategy involved and there and
- 43:28Speaker 6: it's like you can you get you get it, you
- 43:31Speaker 6: can get out what you put in in football, if
- 43:33Speaker 6: you're tough and you're physical, and you have technique and
- 43:36Speaker 6: you and you know what you're doing, you play hard
- 43:39Speaker 6: and you can make yourself a good player.
- 43:41Speaker 4: And it's it's a lot of like correlations to life.
- 43:43Speaker 6: You know, there's a lot you can everybody's got to
- 43:46Speaker 6: work together and you can you get out what you
- 43:48Speaker 6: put in. So I just love the entire game of football.
- 43:51Speaker 6: So I that's why I got into coaching. I just
- 43:53Speaker 6: loved everything about it, like just the locker room, the teammates,
- 43:57Speaker 6: like doing doing you know, you do a really good
- 43:59Speaker 6: job on a play and everybody's congratulating you because you
- 44:02Speaker 6: help the team do something good, Like you're helping you know,
- 44:04Speaker 6: you're like Zach talks about a lot, You're you're being
- 44:06Speaker 6: a part of something that's bigger than just you. You're
- 44:09Speaker 6: fighting adversity together. You're you're tight knit. You go on
- 44:12Speaker 6: the road, you know, there's fifty three of us and
- 44:14Speaker 6: there's you know, maybe seventy thousand of them, and it's
- 44:17Speaker 6: just you against all you against that entire city basically,
- 44:20Speaker 6: like just the feeling of that and then being at
- 44:22Speaker 6: home and all the fas you know, your home home crowd,
- 44:24Speaker 6: everybody's coming. They they you just appreciation of you know,
- 44:29Speaker 6: people can do whatever they want to, you know, throughout
- 44:31Speaker 6: the day. And then on Sunday, a lot of people
- 44:32Speaker 6: in Cincinnati choose to come to our stadium and watch
- 44:35Speaker 6: us play. They take that out of their day. So
- 44:38Speaker 6: it's like, you know the fact that they chose to
- 44:40Speaker 6: come here and watch us play, and and just it
- 44:43Speaker 6: just it's a special feeling and and you know, for them,
- 44:47Speaker 6: for everybody that comes, like, you know, we put work.
- 44:49Speaker 6: We work hard on what we do, Like we're studying.
- 44:52Speaker 6: We're the tight ends, especially that they got to know
- 44:54Speaker 6: so much stuff. And we're trying to you know, put
- 44:57Speaker 6: on a show. And we're trying to win. We're trying
- 44:58Speaker 6: to win for the city, we're trying to win for
- 45:00Speaker 6: each other. We're trying to you know, just anything. We're
- 45:02Speaker 6: trying to be successful. You want to win anything. You're competitive,
- 45:05Speaker 6: and football is the most competitive NFL for sure, it's
- 45:07Speaker 6: the most competitive thing out there. So I love being competitive.
- 45:10Speaker 6: I'm trying to win and I want to try to
- 45:12Speaker 6: maximize everything, you know, maximize everything within my human you know, potential.
- 45:17Speaker 6: And no better way to test yourself than NFL football
- 45:20Speaker 6: just like your job, you know, like it's it's the
- 45:21Speaker 6: best of the best. And if you you know, if
- 45:24Speaker 6: you think you're good, well you got to you got
- 45:26Speaker 6: to see how good you are, you know, going against
- 45:28Speaker 6: the NFL guys.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Before we started doing this, I gave you a quick
- 45:32Speaker 2: explanation for what we're going to do, and you say, yeah,
- 45:34Speaker 2: that's fine.
- 45:34Speaker 4: But I got to talk about my guys.
- 45:36Speaker 2: What is it about you and your relationship with your
- 45:38Speaker 2: tight end group there?
- 45:40Speaker 6: I mean I love that I that I'm I mean,
- 45:43Speaker 6: I played tight end, but the fact that I get
- 45:45Speaker 6: to coach tight ends in the NFL, it's like it's
- 45:47Speaker 6: it's I wish, I wish like fans and I wish,
- 45:50Speaker 6: you know, everybody could kind of see how these guys are,
- 45:52Speaker 6: like how how smart they are, how driven they are,
- 45:55Speaker 6: how how much work they put in, how unselfish they are.
- 45:59Speaker 6: Just they're good people, you know, and you have you
- 46:01Speaker 6: have to be to be a tight end in the NFL.
- 46:03Speaker 4: You got to be you got to be really really smart.
- 46:06Speaker 6: Like there's so much stuff they got to know on
- 46:08Speaker 6: each play, and they got to know everything. They got
- 46:10Speaker 6: to know all the routes, all the run game blocking,
- 46:12Speaker 6: all the pass protection stuff. You've got to be tough
- 46:15Speaker 6: because you're always going against guys that are you know,
- 46:17Speaker 6: you're going against Miles Garrett and TJ.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Watt.
- 46:19Speaker 6: You're going to get all these guys and you've got
- 46:20Speaker 6: to be really tough. So you got and you got
- 46:22Speaker 6: to be versatile. You got to do all these different things,
- 46:24Speaker 6: and you got to be unselfish because you don't get
- 46:25Speaker 6: a lot of credit for anything. And I talked to
- 46:28Speaker 6: him all the time about it's like, you know, you can't.
- 46:30Speaker 6: You can't be a type of guy that like needs,
- 46:32Speaker 6: you know, credit. You know, you just need to do
- 46:34Speaker 6: your job because you want to do your job because
- 46:37Speaker 6: you want to win. You're a competitive person. The coaches understand,
- 46:40Speaker 6: your teammates understand. But you don't need appreciation from any
- 46:43Speaker 6: kind of media or any kind of fans because like,
- 46:46Speaker 6: you're not doing it for that. You're doing it because
- 46:48Speaker 6: you want to win, because you want to be good
- 46:49Speaker 6: at what you do and you want to help us,
- 46:51Speaker 6: you know, be great.
- 46:52Speaker 4: And my guys are unbelievable.
- 46:53Speaker 6: I mean, all five of my guys in my room
- 46:55Speaker 6: or they're extremely intelligent, they're extremely tough, they care, they're
- 46:59Speaker 6: good people like you don't you don't see you know,
- 47:01Speaker 6: hopefully you haven't seen hardly anything from from these tight ends,
- 47:04Speaker 6: where like they seem like.
- 47:05Speaker 4: They're bad people at all.
- 47:06Speaker 6: They're unbelievable people and they they're like, you know, I'm
- 47:11Speaker 6: selfish as a tight end coach, but I think tight
- 47:13Speaker 6: ends are like some of the top notch people in
- 47:15Speaker 6: the world because as far as men go, because they
- 47:17Speaker 6: got to be you gotta be un selfish, you got
- 47:19Speaker 6: to be driven, you gotta be tough. Like if you're
- 47:22Speaker 6: a business and you're a CEO of a business, you know,
- 47:24Speaker 6: I would recommend if you need somebody to hire, like
- 47:28Speaker 6: I would look at tight ends first because they're gonna
- 47:31Speaker 6: do a good job. Like all my guys here, any
- 47:33Speaker 6: if they wanted to do anything else in life, whatever
- 47:35Speaker 6: they want to do, if if that, if that's what
- 47:37Speaker 6: they want to do, they they're going to be successful
- 47:38Speaker 6: at it just because they're they're they're that type of people.
- 47:41Speaker 6: And they and and we we got to do so
- 47:43Speaker 6: many different things. And there's four of those guys out
- 47:44Speaker 6: there right now playing and they all get opportunities and
- 47:46Speaker 6: they all do all different things. And and I'm involved
- 47:50Speaker 6: in everything as far having to coach those guys. But
- 47:53Speaker 6: I can't say enough about how just good at people
- 47:55Speaker 6: they are and how hard they work. And like you know,
- 47:56Speaker 6: true sample all the stuff he does in the pass
- 47:58Speaker 6: protection and run game and Er Smith, you know, being
- 48:01Speaker 6: unselfish and you know, being a versatile guy.
- 48:03Speaker 4: They could do all different things.
- 48:05Speaker 6: And Tannered like coming in from you know, probably nobody
- 48:08Speaker 6: knew who he was. And now he's making some catches
- 48:10Speaker 6: and and he works his tail off. And Mitchell Wilcox,
- 48:13Speaker 6: undrafted guy, he's play special teams. He blocks hard, he
- 48:16Speaker 6: played you know, you watch him on film, you know,
- 48:18Speaker 6: watch him after the snap like he is going after people.
- 48:21Speaker 4: He's a tough, tough guy.
- 48:23Speaker 6: And then Zach Zach Gentry, the newer guy we got
- 48:25Speaker 6: from the Steelers. Like he's just on Price Coote right now,
- 48:29Speaker 6: but you don't ever see him, know he's None of
- 48:30Speaker 6: these guys get any poopoo face. And I feeling sorry
- 48:33Speaker 6: for themselves. They just showed her up to work every day,
- 48:35Speaker 6: the same guy. And they they they don't give me
- 48:38Speaker 6: a lot of crap. They know I care too though
- 48:40Speaker 6: that they know I'm not trying to, you know, just
- 48:43Speaker 6: mf them. For no reason, like I'm I'm trying to
- 48:45Speaker 6: help him and that you know, we're working together. So
- 48:47Speaker 6: I mean, they're unbelievable people. So hopefully if the fans
- 48:50Speaker 6: out there get a chance they ever see him, you know,
- 48:52Speaker 6: they would love to talk to you, and media too,
- 48:55Speaker 6: they would love to talk to you, but they don't
- 48:57Speaker 6: need that, you know, So don't talk to him too much.
- 48:58Speaker 6: Don't get him feeling good, film too good about themselves.
- 49:01Speaker 6: They're great people and it's I'm I love each say
- 49:04Speaker 6: coming to work because of the guys that I'm coaching.
- 49:06Speaker 2: A few wild card topics to wrap things up with
- 49:09Speaker 2: James Casey, who is your all time favorite athlete in
- 49:13Speaker 2: any sport? And why No One Ryan?
- 49:17Speaker 6: Just his grit, his longevity, like and he's you know,
- 49:20Speaker 6: he's the same type of guy he wasn't about you know,
- 49:22Speaker 6: you don't you didn't see No One Ryan like really
- 49:25Speaker 6: you know, being a humble guy. He wasn't just trying
- 49:28Speaker 6: to self promote himself. And that's another thing about my
- 49:30Speaker 6: tight ends too, is like they don't you don't see
- 49:31Speaker 6: these guys like trying to overly self promote themselves too
- 49:34Speaker 6: much and they're just about their business.
- 49:36Speaker 4: And they're but knowing Ryan.
- 49:38Speaker 6: Was just I mean growing up in Fort Worth area
- 49:41Speaker 6: and when he was playing for the Rangers, like being
- 49:43Speaker 6: able to like see him and you know that and
- 49:46Speaker 6: I was a baseball player, like and when he when
- 49:49Speaker 6: he beat up ron Ventura, like you can't beat that,
- 49:52Speaker 6: Like he's he's he's like the pinnacle for me as
- 49:55Speaker 6: far as like my guy, I mean, I love all
- 49:57Speaker 6: I just watched Barry Sanders' documentary, Like I love that
- 50:01Speaker 6: guy too, just unselfish guy like didn't want credit, didn't
- 50:05Speaker 6: he like was turning down like chances to like break records,
- 50:08Speaker 6: just because he didn't want all the attention. He didn't
- 50:10Speaker 6: want it to be about him. He was just about football,
- 50:12Speaker 6: Like you don't. You don't hear anything about him off
- 50:14Speaker 6: the field, the kind of things Like guys like that
- 50:16Speaker 6: are the guys that I love.
- 50:17Speaker 4: The guys that were great athletes, but they're not like
- 50:20Speaker 4: it's not about them.
- 50:22Speaker 6: They just they love they they're great because they love
- 50:24Speaker 6: the actually they love the sport. They love competing, they
- 50:26Speaker 6: love like winning, they love being a part of something
- 50:28Speaker 6: bigger than themselves. Like those are the guys I love,
- 50:31Speaker 6: Like I love watching those guys and just hearing, hearing
- 50:34Speaker 6: when when those guys speak, those are the guys I
- 50:36Speaker 6: really want to listen to.
- 50:38Speaker 2: How do you feel about procrastination?
- 50:41Speaker 6: I mean, everybody, everybody has it, but I try to
- 50:45Speaker 6: be you know, you have to be in coaching tight
- 50:48Speaker 6: ends that you have to be like on top of stuff.
- 50:49Speaker 4: But I just try to be really intentional. So I don't.
- 50:52Speaker 4: I hate procrastinating.
- 50:53Speaker 6: But I also as I've gotten older and a friend
- 50:58Speaker 6: of mine, at Rice, he gave me a valuable lessening
- 51:00Speaker 6: about outsource all your non core functions. So I'm like,
- 51:04Speaker 6: I only do like a couple of things. I do
- 51:06Speaker 6: football in my family and you know, faith, Like that's
- 51:09Speaker 6: all I do.
- 51:10Speaker 4: So I don't. I don't like waste a lot of time.
- 51:13Speaker 6: I'm when I'm driving into work, I'm listening to some
- 51:16Speaker 6: kind of audiobook or podcast I'm working out. It's I'm
- 51:19Speaker 6: always listening to something I'm trying to learn. I'm trying
- 51:21Speaker 6: to I just want to live like that. I want
- 51:23Speaker 6: to try to maximize it. I want to try to
- 51:24Speaker 6: learn as much as I can. I'm just always curious
- 51:26Speaker 6: about not just football, just everything. I want to learn
- 51:28Speaker 6: things I want to you know, how however long I
- 51:31Speaker 6: got on this earth, I want to try to learn
- 51:32Speaker 6: as much as I possibly.
- 51:33Speaker 4: Can and experience as much as I can.
- 51:36Speaker 6: And I've got two boys now that are that are
- 51:38Speaker 6: thirteen and ten, so a lot of it is I'm
- 51:40Speaker 6: trying to learn as much as I can so I
- 51:42Speaker 6: can help them when they get older, like I try.
- 51:45Speaker 6: I'm trying to like write a book to my kids,
- 51:47Speaker 6: just because I realize as a coach, I'm talking to
- 51:49Speaker 6: my players like all day every day, and I don't
- 51:51Speaker 6: even get a chance to talk to my kids as much.
- 51:53Speaker 6: So I like, well, okay, I'm going to start writing
- 51:55Speaker 6: down everything that I think is important for them, and
- 51:57Speaker 6: then when they get in high school, I'm going to
- 51:59Speaker 6: give it to them and say this is what I'm
- 52:00Speaker 6: my beliefs on, you know, like integrity, like my beliefs
- 52:04Speaker 6: on like attitude and respect, my beliefs on kindness, my
- 52:07Speaker 6: my beliefs on like have an extreme accountability on things
- 52:10Speaker 6: and how important that is, and having worthwhile goals like
- 52:13Speaker 6: you know, you can't it's hard to do something if
- 52:15Speaker 6: you're not you know, if you don't know what you
- 52:17Speaker 6: want to do, Like you got to know what you
- 52:18Speaker 6: want to do first you got to know and know
- 52:20Speaker 6: you know, and then you can put all.
- 52:21Speaker 4: Your attention towards that.
- 52:22Speaker 6: And like most things in life, like I don't like
- 52:26Speaker 6: procrastinating because it's just like I just have my mindset
- 52:28Speaker 6: on one thing and I just try to outlast everybody
- 52:31Speaker 6: and try to do it hard on nobody else and
- 52:32Speaker 6: try to outlast everybody.
- 52:33Speaker 4: And that's and.
- 52:35Speaker 6: It's hard for kids. But I'm trying to explain to
- 52:37Speaker 6: my boys, like you guys need to be thinking every
- 52:39Speaker 6: day and to the tight ends too, you be thinking
- 52:41Speaker 6: every day about what you're going to do after football,
- 52:44Speaker 6: because if you don't know what you want to do,
- 52:46Speaker 6: like you're just going to be randomly just wandering around.
- 52:48Speaker 4: Like you got to have.
- 52:49Speaker 6: You need to be exact about what you want to do,
- 52:51Speaker 6: and then the only thing that's not exact is just
- 52:54Speaker 6: say or something better.
- 52:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 52:55Speaker 6: It's like I want to like me, I want to
- 52:57Speaker 6: be a I want to coach. I want to keep
- 52:59Speaker 6: rising up. I want to hopefully be a head coach
- 53:00Speaker 6: one day.
- 53:02Speaker 4: And I'm not.
- 53:02Speaker 6: Picking like a specific place, you know, it could be anywhere.
- 53:05Speaker 6: I just want to get in the you know, reach
- 53:07Speaker 6: the highest level I can. But I know what I
- 53:09Speaker 6: want to do, so all my time is spend on
- 53:11Speaker 6: football and that's it. And then I'm trying to explain
- 53:13Speaker 6: that to my kids. And I know a long answer
- 53:16Speaker 6: you aspect procrastination, I'm not a maniact. I mean, I
- 53:19Speaker 6: procrastin out some things. But when it's like the important things,
- 53:21Speaker 6: I try to, you know, make sure I'm just try
- 53:23Speaker 6: to be really really focused and conscious of what I'm
- 53:26Speaker 6: doing and just get get those things done. But I
- 53:29Speaker 6: procrastinate all kinds of stuff that's not like the most
- 53:31Speaker 6: important things to me.
- 53:33Speaker 2: Describe the experience of watching your two boys play sports.
- 53:37Speaker 4: The best experience in the world is that.
- 53:38Speaker 6: I mean, you know, we go out here and we
- 53:41Speaker 6: played you know, money not football last last week, and
- 53:46Speaker 6: you know, it's exciting and it's you know, you're out
- 53:48Speaker 6: there on money now. You know, millions of people are watching,
- 53:50Speaker 6: you know, all these celebrities or you know, the announcers
- 53:53Speaker 6: and all this stuff. But that is nothing compared to
- 53:56Speaker 6: like going and watching a select baseball game of your
- 53:58Speaker 6: own kid. You know, you baseball game is of your
- 54:02Speaker 6: own son, is like a thousand times better than what
- 54:05Speaker 6: it would be like watching money not football. Even though
- 54:07Speaker 6: I love the tight ends. I love them, you know,
- 54:09Speaker 6: like that's that's below it, but it's still way below
- 54:12Speaker 6: it as opposed to my own kids, like there's that's
- 54:15Speaker 6: my The biggest thing I look forward to is watching
- 54:18Speaker 6: them play sports and seeing them grow. And and it's
- 54:21Speaker 6: stressful too because we know as men, you know, we're
- 54:24Speaker 6: older men now, we know all the pitfalls that can happen.
- 54:26Speaker 6: We know all the things that are going through our mind,
- 54:28Speaker 6: through our life, and the things that we, you know,
- 54:30Speaker 6: did that was dumb, Like everybody does dumb things.
- 54:32Speaker 4: We know all those things.
- 54:33Speaker 6: We know that they're going to go through that too,
- 54:35Speaker 6: and you know, I'm just hope they don't do the
- 54:38Speaker 6: really really dumb things, especially nowadays. We got we hit
- 54:42Speaker 6: like the World History jackpot because we didn't have cell
- 54:44Speaker 6: phones and we were kids. We didn't have everybody taking
- 54:47Speaker 6: pictures of everything. We didn't have social media, so we
- 54:49Speaker 6: were able to grow mature before that stuff came about.
- 54:51Speaker 6: So we know, we don't we know not to let
- 54:53Speaker 6: that ruin our lives. You know, we're not worried about
- 54:55Speaker 6: likes and who comments on our posts and stuff, but
- 54:58Speaker 6: their age, that's like their whole life. Like I'm just
- 55:02Speaker 6: to try to make sure they understand that who cares
- 55:05Speaker 6: what somebody says on social media? Like who cares what
- 55:08Speaker 6: some celebrity is doing? Like it's not important, Like it's
- 55:10Speaker 6: you know, focus on what's really important. But it's stressful,
- 55:14Speaker 6: but it's the most fun ever is watching the kids
- 55:16Speaker 6: and watching them play sports, watching you know, watching them
- 55:19Speaker 6: how they grow and develop, and like seeing their personalities,
- 55:21Speaker 6: and it's fair. I talked to about tight Ends about
- 55:24Speaker 6: of the bunch. You know, I catch myself a lot
- 55:25Speaker 6: of times talking about my own kids, just because, you know,
- 55:28Speaker 6: I thought, when you're you know, you finally become a dad,
- 55:31Speaker 6: it's like you're teaching the kids everything and I'm trying
- 55:35Speaker 6: to but they teach me a lot of stuff too.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Final question, This one's kind of deep. If you could
- 55:41Speaker 2: meet anybody in history, living or deceased, who would that
- 55:45Speaker 2: person be?
- 55:46Speaker 6: Oh easiest question ever Jesus Christ, for sure. I mean,
- 55:49Speaker 6: I just I'm thirty nine. I try to be well,
- 55:52Speaker 6: well thought out about everything, and I wasn't very religious
- 55:55Speaker 6: until recently till this last off season, where I said, Okay,
- 56:00Speaker 6: my kids are going to school and they're going to
- 56:02Speaker 6: Catholic school, and I was like I always believe in
- 56:05Speaker 6: the Creator because I'm like, no way this just came
- 56:06Speaker 6: about randomly from cells. Like everything's way too order and
- 56:10Speaker 6: too structured, and there's way too much things that makes
- 56:12Speaker 6: sense for it to just be random. So I was like,
- 56:15Speaker 6: I need to learn about this, and I didn't. My
- 56:18Speaker 6: parents never you know, took me to church. You know,
- 56:20Speaker 6: I grew up real port we did. That was not
- 56:22Speaker 6: a part of our life. And so as an adult,
- 56:24Speaker 6: as an even in high school, it's like I was
- 56:26Speaker 6: hearing some of things, like for the first time. I
- 56:28Speaker 6: finally said, Okay, I'm I'm gonna study this. And I've
- 56:31Speaker 6: read like eight books this off season about Christianity and
- 56:35Speaker 6: like the very beginning and the economical councils and like
- 56:39Speaker 6: the history history of it and how it all in
- 56:41Speaker 6: Apostolic secession, like all the different like the Great Schism
- 56:46Speaker 6: in ten fifty four, the Process Reformation, the fifteen hundreds,
- 56:49Speaker 6: when Martin Luther knowed that THESS up against the Catholic
- 56:51Speaker 6: like I studied it, like knew it, not know it,
- 56:54Speaker 6: but I studied it. And now I'm a believer, so that,
- 56:57Speaker 6: you know, I would love to just you know, talk
- 56:59Speaker 6: to talk to Jesus. You know you can probably give
- 57:00Speaker 6: me some wisdom on some things and probably calm me
- 57:03Speaker 6: down a little bit on some things too.
- 57:06Speaker 2: This has been really enjoyable. I took more of your
- 57:09Speaker 2: time than I said I would, but I really appreciate
- 57:11Speaker 2: it and best the left the rest of the year.
- 57:13Speaker 4: Thank you. Have great day.
