- 0:00We are in Effigy. This is Joey. We've got Jess over here,
- 0:04Joey's vocals, jets, guitar and to buy us some bass. Drumber is
- 0:09currently working in the kitchen. Good that should be thanks for joining us to
- 0:16say, guys, good to catch up in Effigy. Have a fair bit
- 0:19going on in the near future, but we'll start with Lighthouse Rocks where you
- 0:23weren't the right to play after winning the Triple and Battle the Bands in Bunderberg
- 0:27recently. So congratulations on that. Yeah, thank you man. Yeah,
- 0:32yeah, it's been auto Man. We get to open for Living end of
- 0:35a massive, massive living end feeling. Who isn't iconic Australian band? Yeah,
- 0:45tell us a bit about that. Guy's like, I love your music
- 0:48and a lot of a lot of people do, but it's very rare for
- 0:50someone of your style to win a Battle of the Bands for a radio station
- 0:54like Triple M. So tell us a bit about it. Roy chopped us
- 0:57as the shop everybody else. Don't worry. We're usually just going to things.
- 1:02We usually just goes into those things because they're a heap of fun.
- 1:04It exposes us to no pun intended, exposes us to a different crowd of
- 1:11people. Yeah, it sort of opens us up to the like the more
- 1:15the more stable local base of music fans. But yeah, no, we
- 1:21we no, we didn't expect to win it. And if you go back
- 1:23and watch that video, we were just just as stunned as everybody else was.
- 1:27I didn't even when they said our name, Mike didn't even hear it.
- 1:32I'm just standing there and they're going, come forward, come forward,
- 1:36and I'm like, but what for what did we win? We check with
- 1:40j like did they just saying it? And I'm just like, I don't
- 1:44think so. Bro should be honest though, Chris, like after last year,
- 1:49we went in this year because we wanted the pre tickets to see the
- 1:53living end, because you get free tickets for going. So we're like,
- 1:57no, we're going to go on. But we just just I had just
- 2:00to do what we always do. We didn't change it and go We didn't
- 2:05make it for a different crowd. We just went out there and did our
- 2:08thing. And we're kind of lucky lately because we're getting a huge ground swirling
- 2:15of support from locals up here and Bunny. It's strange for us where it
- 2:19used to be in the underdogs, so it's really nice to have that local
- 2:24support. Good ideas. Man and Light House Rocks will be held in Bunderberg
- 2:30on October forty eight, featuring The Living End, Screaming Jets, baby animals
- 2:32and more like. I was going to ask you most looking forward to playing
- 2:36with it, but he's have already answered that with the Living End, Yeah,
- 2:39and Screaming Jets, So I want to want to catch up with Screaming
- 2:43Jets. They're amazing to shine your atage, They're a bit mate. I
- 2:50used to go and interview living In back in the Nomity, so best to
- 2:53both worlds. Yeah, I've sworn of myself. I'm going to get a
- 2:57foot with Chris Chaney's Grudge guitar. That's that's my goal. He can play
- 3:00that motherfucker like. He's a very good he's unbelievable, one of those unvalued
- 3:09and appreciated fucking streaders in Australia. I was second that notion. I second
- 3:15that. So it's probably the biggest show yet for in effigy guys. Like
- 3:19he's starting to get nervous, Oh bro, I never get nervous in my
- 3:28first in my first seven four a in the live music. I was in
- 3:30a rap metal band years ago when I was like seventeen years old and the
- 3:32crowd was so hostile they were throwing bottles at us. And from that point,
- 3:38man like, honestly, like nothing scares me, dude, I'll go
- 3:42out and play to anyone anywhere. And look when you're playing with the rest
- 3:47of the guys in an effigy and that he kind of don't get nervous going
- 3:52on stage. He kind of just you get excited. It's and you know,
- 3:57you're going to just go out there and do what we do. We've
- 4:00been playing a lot like then, we just kind of go out there and
- 4:03just focus. It's just have much. Yeah, as much as it's going
- 4:09to be a fun thing for you guys playing on it, like is there
- 4:12a more serious sight too, Like he's going to be watching what the other
- 4:15bands do and how they prepare and how they gay, Like is it a
- 4:17bit of a learning experience too or is it just fun? Definitely play I
- 4:24don't anyway, Yeah, definitely. I don't think we ever play a gig
- 4:29where we don't try to take away something like to learn, like we see
- 4:32something something better, we know how to we're gonna We're gonna find jack that
- 4:38that process, like, that's that's the only reason why we've we've always sort
- 4:42of we started off as a scrub band and we were just playing a nobody
- 4:46basically like most bands start out, and we just we stopped giving a funk
- 4:49about that pretty early on in the game. So we we always just try
- 4:54to learn and always try to be better. And even though we're back having
- 4:59fun for us, we're also about professionalism. We always make sure we turn
- 5:02up on time. We'll always make sure we're there and if we can learn
- 5:08any way of honing that professionalism from other two bigger touring bands, will certainly
- 5:15be taking notes, don't you worry. Yeah, just one tip boy,
- 5:17you guys, just in case you're sort of unaware the festivals like there's just
- 5:23make sure you're watching your set time, like if they give you twenty minutes,
- 5:26don't go over bro, Like that's a big thing. These festivals,
- 5:29like the bigger shows do like I know that, like things like Big Day
- 5:31Out and Ship they actually find bands going over time, so that that would
- 5:35be the biggest tip point. Don't don't go over like finished Actually funny to
- 5:40bring that up, Yeah, that's funny to bring that up. Will be
- 5:45first, we did a very babble of the bands when we're all organizing it,
- 5:49standing out coming a C and the Organ Boston in Bedford Dead. You
- 5:56know, at big festivals no one needs a ship. Why you go over
- 6:00time, but they will get the ships if you do get over go over
- 6:02time and that, Like again, I learned from that and I've paid really
- 6:06close attention to that, and I've always been really focused on that in terms
- 6:11of being really really clear on our set times and getting the fuck out of
- 6:15everyone else's way. I didn't think i'd have to tell you that, boy
- 6:18to just sort I'd let you know just in case. Yeah, we're always
- 6:23happy to get some tips, don't you worry brout it. I'm four of
- 6:27them. They're usually all bullshit, but I've got a couple of good ones.
- 6:32So also, as part of the prize for winning that Battle of the
- 6:35Band's you also get to play a song on air for Triple M. So
- 6:40tell us about some tomorrow. I believe this has becoming our Friday, so
- 6:43we'll say this morning, but tell us about it. Well, we working
- 6:46and play it live. But I put a drill through my finger today at
- 6:51work and it's pretty much look that on a halt. So we're just going
- 6:57to play something from our spotify which is we're a bit a big demo about
- 7:01but Sore gig this weekend with I'll Be Happy but literally, Jill been completely
- 7:10my finger on the bone. That's where you work in Dangerous. So yeah,
- 7:15so that put a bit of a kibosh on it. Unfortunately, the
- 7:20metal gods have spoken, they don't want your want radio. We're still we're
- 7:27still going to do the interview. Oh look, but at least now,
- 7:32like yeah, see, we're going to have to go in and do an
- 7:36acoustic number because they couldn't fit it. So at least now they'll get to
- 7:40hear what we're actually like when they play a song my need good. And
- 7:50also part of that prize is a three song recording session to go with it.
- 7:55So what's the plans with that? Oh man, we're still, in
- 8:00true in effigy fashion, we have we're still on the pot with that one.
- 8:03We're still working out fighting which songs are going to make those three songs,
- 8:09But we'll get there, man. Again, in true and effigy fashion,
- 8:11we'll fucking work it out, right, in them in the midnight hour.
- 8:13Yeah, and then the suspense is real for everybody. What are you
- 8:20going to do with that? You're gonna release those three either as singles or
- 8:22as a small pay are you going to put them towards an album in the
- 8:24future? Right, Well, we'll probably this one. Look, it comes
- 8:33down to how it turns out. If we're quite happy with the recordings and
- 8:39we want to present it, we'll probably end up either bringing out as a
- 8:45few singles. We're talking to a few people about hopefully doings of video clips
- 8:50in the future, so if we can do a bit of thunk around a
- 8:56couple of these songs, we'll probably just release it one at a time as
- 9:01singles. But really, when it comes down to releasing EPs and albums,
- 9:07we're just happy just to be keep flicking songs out. We're going to hopefully
- 9:11go in and do some recording tune anyway, So this is just kind of
- 9:16being that process up. But we've kind of made the decision a little while
- 9:20ago just to kind of drip feed until we've got enough to maybe print vinyl
- 9:26or something. But I think the day and age with digital stuff, we'll
- 9:30just be able to get it out there having visuals with it, like to
- 9:33be able to do visuals. We've got local people that do some amazing stuff
- 9:37and they want to work with us and we can do that in the future.
- 9:41That'll just take what we do that step further cool. Speaking of recordings,
- 9:48you've also recently released a live album called Live at the OBT. Like,
- 9:52what the fuck's a OBT, right, that's the Bundeberg, that's the
- 9:56Bunderberg home of alternative music. That's the pub on Key Street and anyone that
- 10:03doesn't fucking know needs to go there that The venue has been absolutely awesome for
- 10:07live music here and Bundy. They've really really helped us out. They've helped
- 10:11everybody involved with the East Coast Alternative. They back us one hundred percent.
- 10:16They support us a lot. It's called the Old Bundy Tavern. Yeah,
- 10:20ob Team, it's just one of the older pubs here and Bundy, and
- 10:24going knew the stuff and he worked out again now, but he hooked us
- 10:31up. We had nowhere to play in Bundy. There was no venue it's
- 10:33willing to put gigs on for any bands like us, So we just kind
- 10:37of band together and we formed East Coast Team. When we did them up
- 10:43one month, can put gigs and then yeah, no worried so and it's
- 10:48really now like we're think people from everywhere like it's it's becoming we're very proud
- 10:56of. But yeah, ob team means Old Bundy Tavern and it was ordered
- 11:00live. That's what we do with East Coast Alternative. We thought we release
- 11:05it because it's a good example of what we did. Very cool. I'm
- 11:11glad you brought up the East Coast Alternative guys, because he's a very big
- 11:16part of that, and there's a collection of musicians from Bunderberg trying to build
- 11:20the music scene there. So tell us a little bit more on that and
- 11:22what you do and how people can get hold of you. Okay, So
- 11:26the East Coast Alternative basically started out as a playlist that I've put together on
- 11:31Spotify, all the local bands that we played with that I was, I
- 11:35just fucking adore the shit out of them, bands like Rumination, East Coast
- 11:39Alternative, fucking Dirty Brew Forest like and it's sort of evolved from that because
- 11:45we as a band have played two empty rooms like the scene did not exist.
- 11:52Crown Ruckus, who is basically fronted by the boys from Exotic Position Cookies.
- 11:58They were trying really hard, but they're really really big bands growing away
- 12:01and doing nothing's really happening here. We wanted something that was ground and solid
- 12:09on live music in Bundy and developers scene. There is there's no like Sam
- 12:16from Bullman Street Massive asked me about like fees to get involved. Man,
- 12:20there's nothing like that. Like if we love you and you want to come
- 12:22and play with us, you can come and play with us. We'll throw
- 12:24you on the on the Spotify playlist, will promote you when you bring out
- 12:28new material. Because realistically, all we want to do is make Queensland music
- 12:33fucking awesome and we really really want to push it and we want people to
- 12:37listen to it and get familiar with it, sing along with it and get
- 12:39way behind it. It's not even just for in effigy. It's not just
- 12:43for us, it's for for everybody. Know, how do people get a
- 12:46hold of you guys for that bright just sit us up on a Facebook Look
- 12:50at East Coast Alternative. We've got a group and a page. The page
- 12:54is for all just anyone posting any of their experiences with the East Coast Alternative
- 13:00coming out and place some photos. The group is more for the back line
- 13:05and how you're getting time quick. We have music working myself, So yeah,
- 13:15just looks up and facing dot car. That's far good right now.
- 13:24But yeah, if you just can't alternative on base page, come and like
- 13:31I said, we're piston Fist coming up. They're just trying to create a
- 13:37space that other bands can come and play with and a professional space, and
- 13:41that's where we're trying to create fullage. We do videos, we do live,
- 13:50we recalled live, and it just allows bands, especially local bands,
- 13:54like there are some amazing musicians in this bund Bunderberg wide Bay area now through
- 14:00us doing these gigs that being able to hone their skills. There's bands like
- 14:05Reckless Are they're a local punk band and they basically started with the very first
- 14:09couple of Battle of the Bands and now they're they're they're just carving it up
- 14:15because they get to play live. They get to hone those skills on a
- 14:20live setting on a stage with other bands that come through a bit like kind
- 14:24of we're talking about what tips are we going to learn when we go to
- 14:28the fast Wool. We're kind of giving that to the local bands and for
- 14:33us we want to kind of hope that there's a lot of young people that
- 14:35are kind of catching on. So hopefully instead of thinking on we're in a
- 14:41rural area, there's something happening, maybe they might just go, we'll bug
- 14:45it. These clowns are playing music, we might do it to you.
- 14:48Yeah. And I think the fundamental thing too is that, like as an
- 14:52Australian, Australian bands, venues on the East Coast are few and far between.
- 14:56So if we can encourage other venues to to open up their doors and
- 15:01put bands on and create spaces for more bands to play because they can see
- 15:05that it's profitable. Like male heads love to fucking drink man, and like
- 15:09our bars make a lot of money over the over the bar and they're fucking
- 15:13like Old Bunny Tavern has in an effigy cocktail for eighteen dollars and like you'll
- 15:18fucking seed everyone with one in their hand, you know. Like, but
- 15:22we just we want to create the entire Queensland space of live music because the
- 15:28sparsity of space between every venue all the way up the coast is massive.
- 15:35You know, this is a huge country and it's really really hard to get
- 15:37venues behind you I mean you're down in Victoria. You can play us down
- 15:41in bob and or or down in Sydney order, but Queens, you know,
- 15:46like it's here. People want it and we want to work to give
- 15:50it to them in a professional We have a really back line. We have
- 15:54really good like I says, we record everything, we have professional level geography,
- 16:00broad rising title of s are ships. We're just trying to make everything
- 16:03better for everybody. Good on you, guys. And this Saturday night you
- 16:10played Metal United worldwide at the Sugarland Tavern with pistol fist, exotic postion,
- 16:14cookies, masters and mayhem and steroids like sounds like fun. Tell us about
- 16:18that fucking Batman and that venue is crazy. It's it's an old, closed
- 16:23down three story nightclub and it has just been beautiful. CD fucking Vine to
- 16:30her mirrors and more little little alcoves and rooms than you could poke a few
- 16:37things. Are so many nooks and crannies for cocaine and Chris, There's so
- 16:41many nooks and cranks
