Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Mike Hosking: Delivery and confidence - that's what we want from governments
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: I think we got enough out of Nicola Willis on
- 0:07Speaker 1: the program Friday to know that today Cabinet's going to
- 0:09Speaker 1: sign off this money for FARMAK to solve the cancer problem.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The big out working of this is I hope they've
- 0:14Speaker 1: learned their lesson. This government has a couple of problems.
- 0:17Speaker 1: The biggest one is the mess they inherited. Of course,
- 0:19Speaker 1: a mess we are going to spend at least the
- 0:20Speaker 1: next year, and having spent the past year deep in
- 0:22Speaker 1: it as well. Two years of economic misery is a
- 0:25Speaker 1: lot to ask of an electorate, and it's a lot
- 0:27Speaker 1: to expect of a government to try and rectify. Even
- 0:30Speaker 1: on a good day with plenty of intent and hard work,
- 0:32Speaker 1: voters get grumpy with who ever's in charge, no matter
- 0:35Speaker 1: what it was, whether it was actually their fault or not.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So given that problem number two self inflicted wounds, the
- 0:41Speaker 1: cancer promise was mad. It was mad because governments don't
- 0:44Speaker 1: pick drugs. That's what far makers for. If you don't
- 0:47Speaker 1: like farmac, fine change it, but don't keep the same system.
- 0:49Speaker 1: While trying to jerry mandarin, they also put out a
- 0:51Speaker 1: list of thirteen drugs, some of which aren't even fit
- 0:54Speaker 1: for purpose anymore. And then having made the mistake of
- 0:56Speaker 1: making the promise. Problem three failure to deliver, I mean
- 1:01Speaker 1: failure to deliver? Did they learn nothing from labor? And
- 1:05Speaker 1: then last week's scrutiny week Shane Retty says one thing,
- 1:07Speaker 1: they'll deliver the thirteen. Nikola Willa says they will deliver some.
- 1:12Speaker 1: David Cymore says he can't make a comment of far makers, independent,
- 1:14Speaker 1: three people, three messages, mixed messaging is that problem number four?
- 1:18Speaker 1: I think it could be mixed messaging. So this week
- 1:20Speaker 1: an answer and seemingly an elegant one. More money. The
- 1:23Speaker 1: money gets spent on stuff that's needed, not automatically the thirteen.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It's spent by far Mak and it might well mean
- 1:29Speaker 1: some spending on other drugs as well. So sorted, but
- 1:31Speaker 1: big lesson, big lesson. It never had to be this way.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And if all they're doing this week is handing out money,
- 1:38Speaker 1: why didn't they do it in the budget when they
- 1:40Speaker 1: had the chance. Delivery and confidence that's what we want
- 1:43Speaker 1: from governments. If this is a one off, they'll get
- 1:45Speaker 1: away with it. If it's a habit. Their toast for
