- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Wednesday, it's the 3rd of
- 0:16September and I hope you're going well.
- 0:18Thank you for tapping on play and inviting me into your day.
- 0:22No matter what you are up to, no matter where you are.
- 0:25I am not in my normal place in the world.
- 0:28I am in the northern part of the state with all my homies at a
- 0:32ministry leaders conference, which is all very exciting and
- 0:36interesting and fantastic. So wherever you are, no matter
- 0:40what's going on in your life, whether you're at home or
- 0:42whether you're far away, whether you're in your normal routine or
- 0:45whether everything's all jangled up for whatever reason, you have
- 0:49stopped for a moment and invited me in so that we together can
- 0:53continue this story of God moving and growing His church in
- 0:58the world. So let us do just that, friends.
- 1:01Let's continue on the story reading Acts chapter 13.
- 1:16Among the prophets and teachers of the church at Antioch of
- 1:19Syria were Barnabas, Simeon called the black man, Lucius
- 1:24from Cyrene, Manaean the childhood companion of King
- 1:28Herod, Antipus and Saul. One day, as these men were
- 1:32worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
- 1:36Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work for which I've
- 1:40called them. So after more fasting and
- 1:43prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their
- 1:47way. So Barnabas and Saul were sent
- 1:50out by the Holy Spirit. They went down to the seaport of
- 1:54Seleucia and then sailed for the island of Cyprus.
- 1:58There, in the town of Salamis, they went to the Jewish
- 2:01synagogues and preached the word of God.
- 2:04John Mark went with them as their assistant.
- 2:07Afterward they travelled from town to town across the entire
- 2:11island, until finally they reached Paphos, where they met a
- 2:15Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet named Bar Jesus.
- 2:19He had attached himself to the governor Sergius Paulus, who was
- 2:23an intelligent man. The governor invited Barnabas
- 2:26and Saul to visit him, for he wanted to hear the word of God.
- 2:30But Ellamus the sorcerer, as his name means in Greek, interfered
- 2:34and urged the governor to pay no attention to what Barnabas and
- 2:37Saul said. He was trying to keep the
- 2:39governor from believing. Saul, also known as Paul, was
- 2:44filled with the Holy Spirit and he looked the sorcerer in the
- 2:48eye. Then he said, You son of the
- 2:51devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud and enemy of
- 2:56all that is good, will you never stop perverting the true ways of
- 3:01the Lord? Watch now, for the Lord has laid
- 3:04his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind.
- 3:09You will not see the sunlight for some time.
- 3:12Instantly mist and darkness came over the man's eyes, and he
- 3:17began groping around, begging for someone to take his hand and
- 3:20lead him. When the governor saw what had
- 3:22happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the
- 3:27teaching about the Lord. Paul and his companions left
- 3:31Paphos by ship for Pamphylia, landing at the port town of
- 3:35Perga. There John Mark left them and
- 3:38returned to Jerusalem, but Paul and Barnabas travelled inland to
- 3:42Antioch of Presidia. On the Sabbath they went to the
- 3:45synagogue for the services. After the usual readings from
- 3:49the book of Moses and the Prophets, those in charge of the
- 3:51service sent them this message. Brothers, if you have any word
- 3:56of encouragement for the people, come and give it.
- 3:59So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started
- 4:03speaking. Men of Israel, he said, And you,
- 4:07God fearing Gentiles, listen to me.
- 4:11The God of this nation of Israel chose our ancestors and made
- 4:16them multiply and grow strong during their stay in Egypt.
- 4:20Then, with a powerful army, he led them out of slavery.
- 4:23He put up with them through 40 years of wandering in the
- 4:26wilderness. Then he destroyed seven nations
- 4:29in Canaan and gave their land to Israel as an inheritance.
- 4:33All this took about 450 years. After that God gave them judges
- 4:39to rule until the time of Samuel the prophet.
- 4:42Then the people begged for a king, and God gave them Saul son
- 4:46of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for 40
- 4:50years. But God removed Saul and
- 4:53replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, I have
- 4:58found David's son of Jesse, a man after my own heart.
- 5:02He will do everything I want him to do.
- 5:06But it is one of King David's descendants, Jesus, who is God's
- 5:10promised Saviour of Israel. Before he came, John the Baptist
- 5:15preached that all the people of Israel needed to repent of their
- 5:18sins and turn to God to be baptised.
- 5:21As John was finishing his ministry he asked, do you think
- 5:25I'm the Messiah? No, I am not, but he is coming
- 5:29soon and I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the
- 5:33sandals on his feet. Brothers, you sons of Abraham
- 5:38and also you God fearing Gentiles, this message of
- 5:41salvation has been sent to us. The people in Jerusalem and
- 5:46their leaders did not recognise Jesus as the one the prophet had
- 5:50spoken about. Instead they condemned him, and
- 5:54in doing this they fulfilled the prophet's words that are read
- 5:58every Sabbath. They found no legal reason to
- 6:01execute him, but they asked Pilate to have him killed
- 6:04anyway. When they had done all that the
- 6:06prophecies said about him, they took him down from the cross and
- 6:11placed him in a tomb. But God raised him from the
- 6:14dead, and over a period of many days he appeared to those who
- 6:18had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.
- 6:21They are now his witnesses to the people of Israel.
- 6:26And now we are here to bring you this good news.
- 6:29The promise was made to our ancestors, and God has now
- 6:33fulfilled it for us, their descendants, by raising Jesus.
- 6:38This is what the second Psalm says about Jesus.
- 6:41You are my son to day. I have become your father.
- 6:46For God had promised to raise him from the dead, not leaving
- 6:49him to rot in the grave. He said, I will give you the
- 6:53sacred blessings I promised to David.
- 6:56Another Psalm explains it more fully.
- 6:58You will not allow your Holy 1 to rot in the grave.
- 7:03This is not a reference to David.
- 7:05For after David had done the will of God in his own
- 7:07generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and
- 7:12his body decayed. No, it was a reference to
- 7:15someone else, someone whom God raised and whose body did not
- 7:19decay. Brothers, listen, We are here to
- 7:24proclaim that through this man Jesus, there is forgiveness for
- 7:28your sins. Everyone who believes in him is
- 7:31made right in God's sight, something the law of Moses could
- 7:34never do. Be careful, don't let the
- 7:37prophet's words apply to you, for they said, Look, you
- 7:41mockers, be amazed and die, for I am doing something in your own
- 7:47day, something you wouldn't believe even if someone told you
- 7:51about it. As Paul and Barnabas left the
- 7:54synagogue that day, the people begged them to speak about these
- 7:57things again. The next week, many Jews and
- 8:00devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, and
- 8:04the two men urged them to continue to rely on the grace of
- 8:08God. The following week, almost the
- 8:12entire city turned out to hear them preach the word of the
- 8:15Lord. But when some of the Jews saw
- 8:17the crowds, they were jealous. So they slandered Paul and
- 8:21argued against whatever he said. Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out
- 8:26boldly and declared it was necessary that we first preach
- 8:31the Word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it
- 8:35and judged yourselves unworthy eternal life, we will offer it
- 8:39to the Gentiles. For the Lord gave us this
- 8:42command when He said, I have made you a light to the Gentiles
- 8:46to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.
- 8:51When the Gentiles heard this, they were very glad and thanked
- 8:55the Lord for His message, and all who were chosen for eternal
- 8:58life became believers. So the Lord's message spread
- 9:02throughout that region. Then the Jews stirred up the
- 9:06influential religious women and the leaders of the city, and
- 9:10they incited a mob against Paul and Barnabas and ran them out of
- 9:14town. So they shook the dust from
- 9:16their feet as a sign of rejection and went to the town
- 9:20of Iconium. And the believers were filled
- 9:23with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
- 9:38Our God, as we come before you, we are so aware that your story
- 9:45of engagement with us, your people, is such a long one.
- 9:50From the very beginning of creation, you loved and were
- 9:53present with your people. And all throughout history you
- 9:58have been present with your people.
- 10:00You have built your church. You have revealed yourself time
- 10:03and time again, and here we are in this time and place, wherever
- 10:08we are, living our lives, inspired by you and your Spirit
- 10:13in US. Lord Jesus.
- 10:15Lord, continue to shape us, continue to embolden us so that
- 10:23we can truly bring about your Kingdom here around us through
- 10:26the power of your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, come, You know more
- 10:33than we do just how much our world needs you.
- 10:37Come, transform our world. Bring peace into places of
- 10:42violence, bring love into hearts that lack forgiveness, Bring
- 10:48your presence where there is emptiness, and use us in
- 10:52whatever way you see fit to bring about your ends.
- 10:56We love you and we praise you, and we pray all of these things
- 11:01in your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
