- 1:02SPEAKER_02: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the founder of Type A skincare or deodorant rather, Alison Moss.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the show, Alison.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: I'm so excited you're here.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: And it is skincare.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Deodorant deodorant goes on your skin.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: So it's all skincare.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: No, I figured I was like, you know what?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: But type the deodorant is really the stuff that I'm I really love your deodorant.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: It's just so good.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: And you know, obviously everything else is amazing as well.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: But I want to get started and I want to ask you really about your journey and how you got involved in skincare and where it all began for you.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, um I I actually feel in I've been involved in skincare and interested in skincare for a long time.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, growing up in Southern California, I I probably was an early adopter of putting sunscreen on my face every day because that's what you did out here when I was a teenager.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: And then it followed through to, you know, my early career um in marketing.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: And I was lucky to kind of fall into the beauty industry.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: And I worked in um with Lauder and L'Oreal for uh a good chunk of time in New York and um you know saw firsthand and just got immersed in beauty and in all the categories, but I particularly fell in love with skincare just because it's there's something nourishing about skincare.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: It's nourishing for your skin, but it's also like very feel-good in um in a different way than cosmetics or fragrance.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's very personal and you're doing something for yourself.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: And I always loved that.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, I worked with, I've been fortunate to work over, you know, my my 20 years in beauty with um a number of amazing um brands, but especially, you know, thinking about skincare, Jurlik, and beauty counter and some some brands with some really amazing products.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: And um, and that's always really fun.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: And it all motivated me to say, hey, we can take care of the skin on our body as well as we take care of the skin on our face and also deliver some other awesome and needed uh performance benefits that I felt were lacking in the market.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, I took that leap of faith and thought of a different way to approach deodorant and went after it and brought it to market um three years ago now.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Wow, I love that.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: And I really love that you what you said is um, you know, skincare is very different.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: And you know, I can definitely resonate with that because for me, like I was, you know, obviously when we're in college and we're like trying on all these different things and trying to get that perfect everyday natural look that makes our skin look beautiful and you know, all that stuff, like it really led me down this path of like, wait a minute, you know, if your skin's not healthy, nothing you put on top of it is going to be looking good.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: So I completely agree.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And I think, you know, that ritualistic part of you know, you're using products that are good for you.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: You're you know that whatever you're putting on the largest organ of your body, like it's it's safe.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: It's you know, um, you've taken the time to do your homework to figure out what's best for you.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: That's I mean, all of that is it's a process and it's it's a beautiful thing.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: And I think it really kind of, you know, I almost call it meditative because it it really kind of sucks you in in the best way.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I I I love that you said that.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: And I love that you have so much experience and you've really come from this angle of just, you know, I you you wanted to create something that was meaningful.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: And that's really what I I, you know, I look for that in all the founders that I support in terms of as a consumer, you know, and I know that goes a really, really long way for um people when you know when you're shopping for brands and stuff.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: So I want to actually ask you, because obviously I, you know, I started off the episode and I mentioned the deodorant because it is so amazing, like it is really revolutionary.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: You know, I was that girl that always used um, you know, one specific brand and it was one of those brands that had that clinical strength formula, you know, and it was like it always bothered me because I was like, what does it mean when they say clinical strength?
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: You know, it was like always in the back of my head.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: How many chemicals am I putting on my body for that?
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, exactly.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I was like, what am I really doing to my skin?
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: And you know, as a woman of color, one of the biggest problems we have is that underarm discoloration.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like almost like a hyperpigmentation.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: And I can honestly tell you, ever since I've switched over to type A deodorant, I've actually noticed a decrease in that, as well as it's like no irritation, even when I'm like after you shave, like I noticed like my skin does not at all react the way it used to when I was uh buying those, you know, drugstore over-the-counter kind of uh products.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: So I really want you to dive into the deodorant and tell us all about that and the journey of formulating it.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely happy to.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: And I mean, thank you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: First, I guess first of all, I had an idea for a product that I thought would function better and work differently and better for a lot of people when it came to deodorant.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: And that was what started that was that was that that was the the idea that that became type A.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, it it really means a lot to me that if I'm gonna do this and I'm gonna put everything in it.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I love my job working in marketing in general and beauty.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, if I'm gonna go for it, I want it to be on the back of um, you know, something that's meaningfully different and and needed in the market.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: So I'm just glad you recognize that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: So thank you.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, absolutely.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: And I believe as a consumer too, like I, you know, I just don't want another label um over a basic formula.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: I want something that, you know, that really delivers and that um, you know, that that maybe is a is a is different than what's come before it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Um so you know, talking about the formula and the and and how we got and how we got to where we are, you know, my it was all I've been steeped in so much product development and product marketing knowledge over my career.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: And it was really that I can never take my product hat off and I overanalyze everything I use in my life.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Um, and I was um on a journey of having tried, you know, dozens of natural deodorants, and I was disappointed by um the performance and the user experiences um and and had this idea for a different approach that again I thought would work better for a lot of people.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: And that's really what that that started the journey.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: I partnered with a freelance chemist in my network, and we ultimately did it the original idea is really what became type A.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: And we did two things.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: We have a patent on our formula um now, which is pretty um it's not very common in beauty.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, it's helped me it just validates.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Um it it's I was you know excited that we got it, went after it, but also um, you know, wasn't wasn't sure where we were gonna go just because knowing the industry, but um, I think it really speaks to it's a totally different approach.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: But basically, there's sort of two things that type A does differently.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: One, um, it mimics a time release effect for the odor protection.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: So it releases the odor protectors little by little over time.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: And that allows it to hold up to workouts and stress sweat.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: It's sweat, we call it sweat activated.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: It's on the front of the pack, but that was the best way we could think of to describe how it worked.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Every time the formula comes in contact with moisture, in this case sweat under your arms, it's triggered to release just a little bit of the odor protector.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: So that's that's one piece of how it's different.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: And then on the other side, you know, it was really important to me to build in as much wetness protection as possible because I think if you're more comfortable, you're gonna want to stick with the product.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: So it needs to protect against odor, it's a deodorant, yes, and it's not an antiperspirant, and we don't claim that, and we're not stopping you from sweating.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: But isn't there a way to make you comfort?
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Like, this is what was my thinking at the time.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Like, isn't there a way to be comfortable?
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Like, does it have to be one or the other?
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: No sweat, no wetness protection or bone dry.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: And so we built two different mechanisms for absorbing sweat into the formula, and it keeps you fresher and than than anything else out there.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think it's it's also part of, you know, it all plays into the odor protection too, because if you're absorbing the sweat, then less odor is occurring.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, that's uh that's a little bit on the technical side, but um it's I think what has really clicked with a lot of people in making the switch and then really try, and then the other piece for me was, you know, and this again came a lot from my professional hat, kind of always thinking about the product user experience.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: You know, we want to take all the boxes, we make it easy to use, and we think about how do we nourish the skin and how do we make sure it's non-irritating and it glides on smooth and it dries instantly and it it does it, it feels good.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, if we can really make it no trade-off, then why not make a switch and stick with it?
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: Um and absolutely no, you know, and that's that's the thing is like I I want to actually ask you because I know that you've done so much, uh, you know, there's just so much background that's gone into this product because I mean, obviously, you know, results speak for themselves, right?
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: So it's like I wanted to like genuinely ask you um during our interview was like, you know, what are some of the things that you found um when you were formulating that are, you know, I guess the most beneficial for when we start sweating?
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Like what is it that we need?
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Like what are some of the ingredients that are really um, I guess what you said, um they're released, they're time sensitive and they're really um helping with mopping up the sweat.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: So can you go into that a little bit?
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's sort of there's two aspects to this sweat, um, sweat absorption or moisture absorption.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Um one was incorporating natural humectants that that are this is what they do, they attract moisture and and they and they suck it up and they can they can hold you know uh a significant amount of moisture.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: And then the moisture evaporates and over time they can continue to function and continue to serve it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: So we we you know glycerin and aloe in the formula and they both serve that purpose.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: And you know, we really looked at like you know a lot of calibration and and the right concentrations and how much do we really need to um you to do the job.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: And then on the other side, there's the um approach of having starches suspended in an oil, usually or an ester.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: A lot of those oils in natural deodorants can be very heavy, they can they can be staining, they can be heavy on the skin, or they end up um you know creating kind of a like a you have a lot of uh kind of a thick layer on the skin.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: And so lots of those other pieces of like the experience that we were trying to tackle.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: So we found the lightest weight oils nesters we could find that were very quick drying and very sheer, um, and that also had some skin nourishing properties, and then we packed them with starches that can help with absorption.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And so then we married those two together, and that's the piece that really hasn't been done.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: And so we got two different approaches working um, you know, together to uh deliver better wetness absorption.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: And you know what wanted to point this out so badly to you when I first uh, you know, when we first uh, you know, decided to talk was that there was a product that came out in the market.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: And I was like, you know, as my my scientist brain like kind of kicked on when I had seen this.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: It was a product that was saying, you know, it was also deodorant, and it was saying that the reason we have, you know, like the odor and stuff in our, you know, when we sweat, whatever is because of bacteria.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, and I remember thinking to myself, well, no, it's what you're you know, it's what's there as almost like the medium in which the bacteria are growing, because obviously we have normal flora on our skin, right?
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: So it's like they were like marketing it in a way where it was like confusing people and it was like making people think that I don't want bacteria in my underarms.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: And I was like, you know, obviously like my scientist brain was like, oh my god, no, no, no, no, no, this is bad, this is bad, you know.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Because so, like I really like your approach because I think that there's a lot of um confusion, you know, around what causes odor and what leads to that feeling of just, you know, oh God, I need to be refreshed or, you know, whatnot.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: So I I think that um, you know, for example, when I noticed, you know, when I first tried the product, I noticed you use uh charcoal in it and spirul uh spirulina.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: And I really would love for you to talk about those two ingredients specifically because I I want to know what the charcoal really does, you know, in terms of just um you know sweat and underarm uh you know hygiene.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Um, so to touch on the bacteria piece for a second, uh it's it it's interesting.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: There's there's a lot of information out there.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: The internet is a is a great facilitator for putting a lot of information about every topic possible, right?
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: It's a scary place, honestly, Allison.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: The internet is a scary place.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I don't disagree with that.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but it you know, there is some truth.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Um odor is caused, so the your body odor is a factor of your sweat comes out odorless, and when it comes into contact with your skin, your microbiome, um, depending on what strains of bacteria you have as a person, which is off you know, somewhat you know, your genetic, you know, disposition and somewhat what you use in all of your environmental exposures, um, that's gonna determine your stink.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: So it is true that the sweat comes in contact with certain strains of bacteria that live in your microbiome, and that's what causes the odor.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: But there's but it's not the whole story.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: And you know, there is also, to your point, um, you know, we don't just want to go killing off our microbiome uh to eliminate the odor.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: You know, what are the other negative, um, what what other what does that do to our skin?
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And also it's only certain strains of bacteria, and that's what and sebum plays a role in facilitating in odor as well and how oily your skin is.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and certainly hormones play a role as well.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, men's odor is different than women's, and some of that might be bacterial, some of that might be hormonal.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Um, there's probably still a lot more we we need to really understand.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: And there's, I think there is some research being done.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, just to it it to your point, it's it is partial, it's true, but it's also a very murky picture.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And it's um, you know, in our minds, uh, you know, trying to zap you trying to trying to kill off your microbiome under your arms is one, a losing battle because bacteria grows back real fast.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: So that's why the odor comes back real quick.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and also, you know, maybe it's it's not the the best approach um, you know, for the health of your skin.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: And at the end of the day, we're you said at the beginning, we're a skincare company.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Um, we we care about your skin, we want to nourish your skin.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: We want to we don't want your skin to be darkened.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: I was I'm so excited to hear that in your experience.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Um, you try to create, you know, a formula that nourishes and creates a healthy skin as well as delivers on the odor and witness protection.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: So I just wanted to speak to that.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, no, I I I I just want to also, you know, insert this little piece here is that you've created, I love how you've created the line because you know you've got the deodorant, which is there to, you know, handle or like the odor and the sweat and the you know the over secretions and stuff, but then you've got this amazing soap line, which is really, you know, the foundation is this uh this idea of putting, you know, probiotics in there so that you are really replenishing your normal, you know, microflora on your skin.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: You're really kind of uh promoting this idea of just natural your skin is naturally made to protect itself and it's naturally uh designed to have this protective mechanism.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: So you've got this, you know, this probiotic aspect in there with the with the soap and the cleansing aspect.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: So I just really, really enjoy looking at how like you know, it's almost like sometimes it's funny because when you when I look at skin care lines, I can almost like kind of see a little bit into the brain of the founder, you know what I mean?
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: It's like, okay, uh, okay, so there's that balance, you know, she balanced it.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, you've got you've got the deodorant, but then look at her her bar soaps, you know, they're very like um like promoting the idea of bacteria and promoting the idea of healthy bacteria.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: So I I want to really kind of focus on that.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: And I want to focus on this balance that you've created in a line because that's very rare to see that in a skincare line.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, no, use them together, most balanced skin.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Um, that there was some thought about that.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Um, I just love that you picked up on that.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I think, you know, we wanted the bar soap in and of itself to be an amazing soap, to have a great cleansing experience that didn't strip skin.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Because I think, you know, I love the idea of a bar soap, but so many of the bar soaps, in addition to liquid soaps and body washes, are, you know, they're they're still surfactant-based.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: They um they they don't they don't nourish the skin's barrier function, they strip skin.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Um, and then they create this dryness and the irritation, and you have to put more moisturizer on.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: And um it's this, you know, it's the vicious cycle.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: So I just, you know, there to me, there weren't um there wasn't a truly skin nourishing um, there wasn't uh formulas out there when it came to soap.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: And I thought we could do it and and do it really, really well and complement the deodorant and you know, both stand alone really well.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: They also work really well together.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: But I love talking about a skin microbiome and a really healthy microbiome.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: And to your point, you know, the probiotics um do, and plus plus the rose hip and the cuckoo and oil, they really do reinforce and strengthen the skin's barrier so it does a better job of trapping moisture and high and staying hydrated, doing what it's supposed to do.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Um and you know, that combined with a non-stripping cleanse, you get super clean skin that is more hydrated.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: And we've had, you know, some user studies where we saw people reported two times more hydrated skin than the bar soap or body wash they were previously using.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: And that um was super exciting to see because it was sort of what we were hearing, but nice to put numbers to it.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you know, I think that it's very important um what you said because I I I I agree because there's a lot of body washes out there that are like super lathery, and you know, you know what I'm talking about.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Like you instantly put water on it and it's like a freaking bubble bath all of a sudden.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: And that's like lather is all it's practical to be.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's like, you know, I think to myself, I'm like, you know, that must have a lot of surfactant in it, and it's really not a good thing to have that much stripping um in terms of like the the chemicals and and what you know, and this just for the listeners out there, you know, because I'm sure you know way more than I do about this, is just that you know, when you're when your bar soap or your uh body wash is lathering that much, you need to pause for a second and think about why.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Because the lather is coming from somewhere, right?
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: It's like it the chemicals, right?
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: So it's like you you really have to wonder like what's in this and why is it so like flimmy, you know.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: What one of the things we were really excited about was we were able to create a pretty rich lather um with our bar soap that so you have that experience because you also, you know, you want to sort of see where it's going, you want to know you've got enough on.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Um and we know that like especially the American consumer likes a lathery experience, but also yes, non-stripping, non-surfactant based.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: And when you see just oodles and oodles of of lather, it doesn't actually mean that it's cleansing more and it might be stripping more.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, there's um there's a lot to learn about soap, but it's it it's it's it's uh it's been a really great journey to be able to extend the line to the rest of the body.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: I actually use our bar soap as my face wash.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: I have been doing that for two months.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it's been wonderful because it's gentle.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: And I think if you um I I use kind of a um an exfoliant twice twice a week, and so that gets kind of in there for the um the grit and the grime, but um on a daily basis, it's but my skin has been you know really balanced over the last couple of months.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: So I've been really happy.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's formulated for for all over body and hands, and um it's it's it I think it's important to to think about skin health head to toe.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: No, I completely agree.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: And I think, you know, I my biggest question to you is, you know, I'm not gonna lie, my I grew up watching my father use bar soap, you know, uh from when I was very little in India.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was like, you know, back then it was just whatever you could get, right?
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: And it was always confusing to me because everything he used was very stripping and it always just left that real rubbery feeling on.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Your skin, you know, and I and I always just tell my dad, I'm like, Dad, I'm not using a bar soap.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: And to this day, he uses a bar soap.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: And so when I gave him yours, he was like very like because he's one of those people that's just like, uh, what works works for me.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: I've been using it for years.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna change.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: And you will not believe you're the first person that's gotten him to change his bar soap.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: He is now a strike a bar soap user.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: I'm telling you.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: I'm telling, and I'm actually gonna get a testimonial from him because I really when I when I saw him use it and really like it, I was like, okay, dad, you know, this brand really is something because my dad, he just wasn't, you know, he's one of those people, very old school, very like sticky.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Send his ways, yeah, yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: So, and I want to actually ask you, why did you go with the bar soap route instead of like a um like a gel or something like that?
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: What was the reasoning for that?
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, it I think it had to do with um eco and sustainability.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: And, you know, we we are exploring um compliments to the bar soap for people who just don't want to go to the bar.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: And we know that like we want to guide people, we want to guide toward something that might be more um sustainable and an amazing product experience.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, we want to meet people where they are, and so um it was the first step toward a larger body care line, and it just you know was sort of tangible, and we all were excited about the idea of doing a better soap.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: Um, we think there's a lot of basic soap out there, but we thought it could be done better and not dissimilar to the deodorant.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, went after it first and yeah, and then and then more to come.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: You know, I would love to see this.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is like my um personal request to you.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: I would really because I'm I'm not gonna lie, I'm one of those more of a bath wash kind of person in general.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: I think I've it's just conditioned into me.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: I would love to see you take this bar soap and make it almost like you know how shea butter comes in a jar and all the scrubs and stuff come in a jar.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: It would be so cool to see the same exact formula, just like broken up in a way and it's in a jar.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: So you can still use it and you can put it on a loofah and you can just still use it the same way, but it's not a soap soap, you know, like a like bar.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: That would be really cool.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: All right, I'm taking that back.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: It's actually my my seven-year-old daughter is is is sometimes so ahead of her, ahead of her time, I guess, or or her age.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but she had an idea that was somewhat similar.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and so now I'm hearing it from two places.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: So now I gotta do it.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: So we'll do that one.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: You gotta do it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: And I'll be your first, you know, first customer, I swear, because it's such a good formula and it really does work and it leaves your skin very nourished, very soft, um, you know, definitely clean, obviously.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: But it's it's just a really, really nice uh formulation and a really nice product.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: But I want to move on because I know you also have hand creams, and I love your hand creams because I am, I'm not joking, I swear I'm a hand cream connoisseur because I from working in the medical field, like your hands get so dry.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: And especially like when we're like scrubbing in and we're constantly washing and you know, sanitizing and all that, like hand cream for me is like the most, I think my one must-have skincare product.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: So, like I really love your hand cream, especially because the my favorite uh scent is the clean uh crisp uh citron uh scent because it's just so clean and yeah, it's just so refreshing.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: But um I really like it because it absorbs so quickly and it's it's genuinely like extremely moisturizing.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: So, what were some of the things you were thinking about when you were um creating this, like the the hand cream?
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so um I had a very specific um thought in mind, and you know, and it I want to say it was uh somewhat of a happy accident that it came together.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And when it did, I said, this is it, we need to launch it.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Um and it was also in the it was in 2020, and you know, our hands were dry.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Our hands still should be dry because we should all have, you know, upgraded our hygiene routines, but um less dry if you're using type A hand cream, but but no, it was um I I I had a very specific hand cream that I had used and adored, and I felt was fasting class, isn't really widely available here.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: I don't want to, I I just you know, just being respectful of the other brand, don't want to mention them.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: But um all the things I loved in that hand cream, I said if we are to bring out a hand cream, and desperately my hands could use one right now, um, it has to take all these boxes.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: And a lot of what you said, it was um, you know, non-greasy and absorbing instantly, but still really rich.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, for me, hand cream needs to be um not a very thin lotion experience, but more of a rich, um, you know, thicker cream experience, but also that um has that, you know, that quick absorption and and non-greasy piece.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: Um and it's yeah, not slick, like no slick.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: You can't have slick on it because you know, honestly, like when I'm seeing patients, I don't want my stethoscope slipping out of my hands.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: And that's you know, let's be real.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: A million percent.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, we're not cooking here, we're not cooking.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: It's it's not cooking oils.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: And I love love natural oils, but yeah, we we were um we were thrilled when um we sort of knew her were tinkering with this on the side and actually working on the bar soap.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, I I I distinctly remember receiving I think the first or second submission for the hand cream.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I think we're launching a hand cream.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: This is really good.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: And you know, thank you.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: Um I'm so glad you love it.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: And and I think it's it's a good, you know, it's it's a second, to be completely honest.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Um, it was really launched for our direct-to-consumer business.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: It's um, you know, when we're thinking about brand strategy, um, you know, this is experiential for our most loyal customers and something that we that lives on our website and that that you know we believe in is a fantastic product, but also um is really there to kind of you know create the you know to be the best of the brand for um the the people who um we're you know directly in contact with.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: Um so we sort of do have different strategies for different products when it comes to you know distribution and and how we're gonna product out there and sort of what we're known for.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I'll also I just want to mention like um I know that like for me, like you know, um I'm very particular about like dry feet.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: I don't know what it is, I think it's like a personal like peeve of mine or something.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Like I cannot stand dry feet.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: And so I like um I always test my hand creams to see like how strong they are by testing them on my on my feet and my heels, and it works really well for as a book cream too for everyone listening out there.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: All right, headline.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: I think that I think we need to talk.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: I think that's our next blog article right there.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: So no, for real, like seriously, like I could I I'm honestly telling you, and I like I I I've used it for my feet, I've used it for my hands, I've used it on my body, like I've you know, like if there's like a dry patch, especially on your your elbows, you know, and it was elbows, it's great on elbows so well.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Elbow cream, yeah, yes.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Oh, I love it.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: It's just a versatile, it's a versatile product, and I really, really love it.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: And I think, you know, I I just I can tell, you know, one thing is like for me with skincare is like it's so intertwined with self-care that I can really tell when a founder's like done their homework and they've really um put their heart into it, you know, and it really shows your products because every single one has a purpose and it does not have your brand doesn't have these redundancies that a lot of skincare brands I see, like you know, they'll have like 15 different like products and they're essentially doing the same thing, you know.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: And it's like I I really enjoy seeing brands that are not doing that.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: So I, you know, I my I guess my naturally my next question is really like, what are you looking to get into next for type A?
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Like what's the next big project if you can tell us a little bit?
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Um, well, that's that's a great question.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Um, I am not sure we're ready to spill the beans just yet.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Um I did sort of hint at, you know, for those who don't use bar soap, um, we're we are looking at how do we create the same great experience, um, but in that, you know, in that liquid form, but in a way that's more sustainable.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: And um we we are, you know, looking at bringing something out to extend body cleansing, if you will, and then and body care.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: Um and it's really about head to toe.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: So I think that's probably as much as I could say, but you actually asked earlier, and this this kind of ties into it about the charcoal and the spirulina.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, finding ingredients that nourish skin, um, that is that finding ingredients that nourish skin um and that you know, and that provide uh I'd say multifaceted skin benefits is important and something we're weaving through the line.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: So spirulina is a great example of that.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, spirulina is really rich in chlorophyll, it has great, it fights free radicals, it has great anti-inflammatory properties, it actually does help with odor protection, which is why combined with the charcoal and activated charcoal does also you really it does boost um you know odor, odor fighting.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: And so those two combined, we put them into the formula in our extra strength or supercharged version as we like to call it.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: And um, and those are our top two selling skews.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: But you know, definitely taking the chart, wheat, the charcoal and spirulina, um, and and other key ingredients that um are really rich for the skin and offer several different amazing benefits um will be sort of part of how we um develop our body care line.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: I really love that.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, I actually want to shift gears a little bit because there's a lot of really cool things just about the brand itself that I think are really worth highlighting.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Like I know you guys are certified by the B Corp, and um I really want to talk about that, and I want to talk about your um decision to go in that direction.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Also, the non-toxic component, I think it's a huge um, you know, it's it's a huge eye catcher for me because I recently did that clean beauty panel and we talked a lot about um toxicity in products and you know, just really what constitutes and what um you know what goes behind a truly non-toxic product.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: So I'd love to hear your your journey with both of those aspects of um having those intertwined in your brand and you know as part as part of your ethos and you know what you're putting out there.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: Well, I'll start with the B Corp piece.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: You know, from the beginning, I had spent some time with another incredible brand that has really been, you know, that has paved the way for clean beauty, and that's Beauty Counter.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, I I they were a B Corp, they were certified B Corp.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: And I think that experience of um, you know, working with a brand that had taken their commitment to the values to the highest level, getting certified is not an easy process.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Um, but through the process, I think it actually helped us do more of what we want to do.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Um but having seen that, you know, it was a model for me to say, you know, very from the very beginning or as close to it as possible, um, I want to go after that B Corp certification and see if we can't get it and see if that can't help us um live our values to the fullest extent that we can right now as a small brand, and then we continue to grow into it.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: And so that's what we did.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: And so a B Corp certification for everyone that doesn't know is you know, when um they basically, it's a kind of a point ranking system where you, you know, if you achieve a certain number of points, you can get certified.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: And and it's across a number of different um sort of you know, subsets or or themes, um, serving stakeholders in different ways.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: So how do you treat your employees?
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Um, what are your you know, what are your policies around diversity, inclusivity, um, and just generally, you know, doing right by the people that work for you.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: How do you treat your customers?
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: Is your product delivering you know something that's a net benefit?
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: How what are your policies around sustainability and eco impact, supply chain, and and going all the way down the supply chain to make sure that everything is ethically and sustainably sourced for a product business?
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot of facets to it.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Um and and I think going through it, we really we we uncovered, you know, going through a great example is, you know, as we were becoming a certified B Corp, um, we realized that becoming carbon neutral, which is, you know, also has its is another conversation of, you know, it's not um it's not a fix for what's happening in the environment, but it's something we should do, but it's by it's just the starting point.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: We actually also need to do better to take carbon out of the atmosphere and um all these other things.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: But becoming carbon neutral and was actually much more tangible than I thought it was.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: And so we did that in 2019 and um probably you know earlier than I would have thought we we could.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but it sort of prompted us to look into it.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: So so things like that where we could actually take a step forward.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Um so that that's the B core piece.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, from the very beginning, my career, my my career trajectory, my journey um has and my personal journey with products have both taken me to working with products that were cleaner, safer, non-toxic, and and it's murky and it's evolving and we're still learning.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, when I had an idea for how to create a you know, better performing deodorant um that that was fundamentally different formally than what was out there, I also, you know, wanted to set the highest bar for safety.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: And I say, you know, it was important to me to, you know, if we have this platform and we have a brand that we can leverage this brand to to not um you know to to do things at the highest level when it comes to ingredient screening and making sure every ingredient and the formulas are safe and effective.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, that's that's to us that's what clean means.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: And, you know, we could be one of many brands that um are rising up to offer, you know, to offer these solutions um and and hopefully, you know, much more broadly in the market so that more mainstream consumers have access to to products that are that are safer.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: And I really, you know, I I really enjoy talking to founders who've, you know, I I know there's no like standardized, I guess, system or like one uh you know entity that can really make sure that things are truly, you know, ethically done or sustainable or you know, all those buzzwords, right?
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: And so these certifications and these things that brands can go through.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: And if you really are some a founder that wants to do things right and you go the extra mile and you look for these kind of certifications, for me as a consumer, that says that you know, you've you're not just here to like market something to me.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: You're doing something that is genuine from a genuine place because you're trying to create something that's going to be long-lasting, right?
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, and that's the whole idea of being an entrepreneur is to really create something that's beneficial to not only, you know, consumers, but to society, to the environment, to, you know, like, you know, you name it.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: And I think that, you know, the these certifications, like I just want to stress, like, because a lot of people who listen in are, you know, they're either aspiring entrepreneurs or they're currently undergoing the process of finding, you know, they're they're kind of like, you know, small business.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: And and I think that it's important to highlight that if you look and you you find things that can help really kind of put a stamp on your product that that is like a third party kind of analyzing you and making sure that you know you're doing things in a way that is safe and it is the best way possible, then it really kind of puts ease in the consumer's mind.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: It it builds trust.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: And I think there's nothing more important, especially in the self-care space, than this um, you know, uh brand, consumer relationship and trust.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's the biggest thing here, right?
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: That's what makes people come back.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: That's what makes you know people want to buy your products again.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, I can't tell you how many brands I look at now where, like, you know, before I got into like skin health and skincare and really started looking at ingredients and stuff that and I look at them and I'm like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I was using that, you know?
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: And it's like it really makes you just think, like, what you know, what are you supporting?
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: And what are you really genuinely voting with your dollars or not?
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: You know, and so it's it's really um, I I really, really like seeing that.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: And especially like for me, I have a toxicology background in my research.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: And I so when I see products that are truly like non-toxic and they're you know, they're doing their best, you know, to just create solutions without causing long-term effects, like it, it's a really great thing for me as a scientist to see that.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: So I I really appreciate that about your brand.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: I love I it's so good.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: You know, I think we we want to serve, we want to serve people, we want to serve the everyday person who's overwhelmed and the everyday you know, mom who's shopping and trying to do better for herself and her family, and is like, I but I I don't even know where to start and I'm overwhelmed by the choices, or I, you know, I wanted to make chaper choices and and what can I trust?
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: Um and I can I can understand how it can be overwhelming.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: I have you know a lot of knowledge and I still am overwhelmed by product choices on a daily basis, but then also, you know, for those who have a bit more knowledge and like for you, you know, you have a background in toxicology.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, it means the world to us that we can set the highest bar and um create products that you um can use and feel good about and love.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, if we can serve everybody, then I think we've done our job.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, I want to actually ask you so with a brand right now is just uh we can shop through the website right now, or is it distributed anywhere else in any uh retail stores or anything yet, or no?
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think one of the one of the things we wanted to do was um you know reach people where they're thinking about making a switch.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: And you know, certainly that's online, but that's still largely at retail.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: And we wanted to create a brand that that you were proud of using and that you felt good about using.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, forgetting the formula and the product efficacy for a second, um, you know, we we're really excited and proud of the fact that we've created a brand that you feel good about and that you also, you know, you can be proud of.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: And it sort of spans a lot of different channels.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: So we actually are about to roll out in um anthropology doors in December.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: So we're super excited about that.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I know me too.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: It's one of my favorite stores.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: So I'm like selfishly, I'm like very happy.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: But I think also, you know, it's the customer, she's there, and I can see her, you know, going on a shopping trip and then also discovering um, you know, clean products and as a, you know, like, hey, that's you know, as a sort of an add-on.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and so it just feels like a really good fit, and we know our shopper, our our customer, um, our consumers there.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: Um, and we have a couple of other sort of more specialty partners who um where it which is different levels of access.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: So Bad Bath and Beyond, um, Credo Beauty, which means the world to us, we've been with them since day one, literally.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: And you know, they they they they stand for what we stand for, vice versa.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Like they're they're their bar is set so high.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: And so we just um adore that that continued partnership.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: And so it's sort of specialty um, you know, places to to discover the brand.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and then on the other side, you know, we want to be where you're shopping for deodorant on like the mainstream day-to-day, everyday level.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: Um, we are in Whole Foods in California, the whole state.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and and we're super excited, and that's been really successful um and also just a great fit.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: And certainly, um, you know, we we were really excited at how how well we've done there.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: Um, we're on Thrivemarket.com and you know, a handful of others, and and also um regionally, depending on where you are in the country, you may find us popping up in a few other stores.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: I love that you are really keeping, you know, I I think the stores that you mentioned and the retailers that you mentioned, I mean, it's very, very um diverse.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: And I really love first of all, let me go go back to anthropology because I remember when I uh, you know, when I first discovered them, I was obsessed, all the dresses and all the cool, you know, it was just the coolest store.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: And so um, but I love that you're you know, you're available in such a wide range of places because honestly, I think as consumers, we stumble upon some of our best products in the most random environments, right?
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: So it's like, you know, it's really nice to have a brand that is something you can trust available in places that you, you know, you're going to, and then you just, you know, maybe something will cross your mind or you'll see it and you'll start thinking, you know, it just makes people think, I think, when you like uh see a brand just pop up, right?
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: And in in a place that you're not expecting.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: Like most people go to Sephora and they're like, okay, I'm gonna get my skincare from Sephora or Alta or whatever, and there nothing wrong with that.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: That's they're great stores, you know.
