- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome aboard to see Yukon Football Coaches show Mike, Chris Pino,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Jim Moore. We get together on Tuesdays recap what's happened
- 0:07Speaker 1: over the last weekend, but something different coach this week.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Nothing happened as far as games for Yukon to play.
- 0:14Speaker 1: You get the bye week one of two, and I
- 0:16Speaker 1: know football fans of Yukon, you know, want to know
- 0:19Speaker 1: what's going on that week. How do you handle it?
- 0:22Speaker 1: How do you keep guys sharp? How important is resting
- 0:25Speaker 1: players when you get to this point in the season.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I think it's it's trying to find the right formula
- 0:34Speaker 2: of work to stay sharp and you know, give them
- 0:38Speaker 2: a chance to rest and heal up. So what we
- 0:40Speaker 2: did is we worked three days Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Some
- 0:45Speaker 2: of the older guys that have you know, had a
- 0:47Speaker 2: lot of snaps that maybe beat up a little bit,
- 0:50Speaker 2: you know, guys like Jilani and Dal and Val and
- 0:54Speaker 2: Chase and you know, some of those guys, you give
- 0:57Speaker 2: them a little rest, but you work, you know, and
- 1:00Speaker 2: our guys they like to work hard and they have
- 1:04Speaker 2: really good practice. We cut out our afternoon meetings, give
- 1:06Speaker 2: them a little bit more time to concentrate on school
- 1:10Speaker 2: or you know, catch up on some of the other
- 1:12Speaker 2: things that they need to do that kind of fall
- 1:13Speaker 2: behind a little bit during the season. So every year
- 1:17Speaker 2: it's a little bit different. This year, I thought it
- 1:19Speaker 2: was really productive. I think that by came at a
- 1:21Speaker 2: really good time for us, and we need to you know,
- 1:24Speaker 2: get some guys healthy and you know see where some
- 1:29Speaker 2: other guys were in terms of their healing process. So
- 1:32Speaker 2: it was very productive for us.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and the other thing too, in my mind for
- 1:37Speaker 1: football is staying fresh. You had six games, you won
- 1:42Speaker 1: four of them, You're on this home stand. You pull
- 1:46Speaker 1: one out of the hat the other day against Temple,
- 1:48Speaker 1: so you got a lot of emotional ups And do
- 1:51Speaker 1: you do you find I mean, you've done the sixteen
- 1:54Speaker 1: game NFL schedule. That's a long that's a long schedule.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Do you find it that players needed to be, you know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: refreshed mentally when you're played this game six or seven
- 2:04Speaker 1: or eight weekends in a row.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You know, I kind of vacillate on that because I think, yes,
- 2:10Speaker 2: they do, but then you don't want to lose that
- 2:14Speaker 2: edge that you that you've kind of developed. But I
- 2:18Speaker 2: think Mike that having a buye after your sixth game
- 2:22Speaker 2: is perfect. You know, it gave us a chance to
- 2:27Speaker 2: get six good games in develop that endurance we want.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Like I said, we worked hard for three days, give
- 2:32Speaker 2: them a break, and they've come back to their credit,
- 2:35Speaker 2: the player's credit, you know, with a really good mindset,
- 2:39Speaker 2: good energy, and by the time kickoff comes around, you
- 2:43Speaker 2: know we should be back in the flow. You always
- 2:46Speaker 2: worry about a little bit of just kind of getting
- 2:48Speaker 2: out of rhythm maybe, but I haven't felt that this week,
- 2:51Speaker 2: So I'm hopeful that we come out and play well
- 2:54Speaker 2: on Saturday.
- 2:56Speaker 1: You mentioned in your press conference Tuesday morning about self
- 2:59Speaker 1: EVALUEA That's always interesting to me because where do you
- 3:02Speaker 1: start with that. I mean, do you just start going
- 3:05Speaker 1: over every piece of video you have of the recent game,
- 3:08Speaker 1: or how when you use that term, what are you
- 3:11Speaker 1: actually saying?
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well, you're self scouting, and I mean it's constant. It
- 3:16Speaker 2: happens every week, but not to the depth that it's
- 3:18Speaker 2: able to happen during the bye. I mean every week
- 3:21Speaker 2: you're self scouting yourself. You're deciding or you're evaluating if
- 3:26Speaker 2: you have tendencies that an opponent can grab onto or
- 3:29Speaker 2: what's working well what's not working well. But a lot
- 3:32Speaker 2: of the things that you do going forward is based
- 3:34Speaker 2: upon game plan, and when you have a bye week,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you can really go back and take a detailed look
- 3:37Speaker 2: at the things that you're doing well and the things
- 3:39Speaker 2: that you're not doing well, and how can you improve
- 3:42Speaker 2: those things or are there things that you're not doing
- 3:44Speaker 2: that can benefit the players that you have in your system.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So just having the time as a staff to take
- 3:50Speaker 2: a look at that and really dig into it. And
- 3:52Speaker 2: then in practice, because you're not preparing for a game
- 3:56Speaker 2: per se, the areas that you need to improve on,
- 4:00Speaker 2: really take time and detail things out and spend a
- 4:04Speaker 2: good amount of your practice time on the things that
- 4:07Speaker 2: you need to improve on.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You kind of been running the ball very well in
- 4:11Speaker 1: the first five games, dominant in some of those games,
- 4:16Speaker 1: had trouble running the ball against Temple, and you know,
- 4:20Speaker 1: the casual fan goes, well, they're one and four, they
- 4:22Speaker 1: can't be very good. But Temple's pretty darn good and
- 4:25Speaker 1: they did an excellent job on the defensive front. I thought,
- 4:28Speaker 1: why did you see or how did you view why
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yukon didn't run the ball that well this past game
- 4:34Speaker 1: against Temple? Whereas they've been, you know, putting two hundred
- 4:37Speaker 1: yards up there in the previous games.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Well, I said it last two weeks ago. Immediately, do
- 4:44Speaker 2: not be fooled by their record or their statistics. Temple
- 4:47Speaker 2: is a really good football team. They have some really
- 4:48Speaker 2: good football players. I think they're very good on defense.
- 4:56Speaker 2: You know, I'm not going to say that they're as
- 4:57Speaker 2: good as a Duke or a Maryland are awake, but
- 5:01Speaker 2: they're pretty damn good. So I knew it was going
- 5:06Speaker 2: to be a struggle, but we just didn't. We didn't
- 5:09Speaker 2: play up to our standard up front. They did some
- 5:13Speaker 2: things defensively in terms of their coverage component that allowed
- 5:17Speaker 2: them to bring an extra gup in the box. We
- 5:18Speaker 2: didn't always have good aiming points with our front guys.
- 5:22Speaker 2: We could have block better on the perimeter. Backs could
- 5:25Speaker 2: have been a little bit more patient and found the whole. So,
- 5:30Speaker 2: you know, it's a lot of times it's just you know,
- 5:32Speaker 2: that attention to the tiniest details that make the biggest
- 5:35Speaker 2: difference in the run game and everyone working together and
- 5:38Speaker 2: the timing of it, and you know, a broken tackle here,
- 5:41Speaker 2: broken tackle there, A great block here, great block there.
- 5:44Speaker 2: All of a sudden, you know, you're making the plays,
- 5:46Speaker 2: but it gave us a chance to look at how
- 5:49Speaker 2: people are trying to defend us in the run game.
- 5:51Speaker 2: This past week did and the devensive coordinator for Temple
- 5:54Speaker 2: is a good friend of mine and was able to
- 5:56Speaker 2: spend some time talking to him about what they thought.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And so getting those ideas from your opponents really help
- 6:01Speaker 2: you as you move forward.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Yeah, the bottom line is you win the game. But
- 6:05Speaker 1: I thought that one of the best things that happened
- 6:06Speaker 1: is you won the game without your bread and butter.
- 6:09Speaker 1: You didn't really run it that well ninety nine yards
- 6:11Speaker 1: on the ground. Did you think that that was a
- 6:14Speaker 1: positive in the sense that you figured out a way
- 6:17Speaker 1: to win a football game without your best stuff? I
- 6:21Speaker 1: guess yeah.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I mean winning any football game is a positive when
- 6:27Speaker 2: you when you don't play your best or you're not
- 6:31Speaker 2: playing at your best at what you do best, and
- 6:33Speaker 2: you still find a way to win it. You know it.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I think number one, it builds confidence, but number two,
- 6:40Speaker 2: it also emphasizes the need for us to be better
- 6:44Speaker 2: in areas and never take anything for granted. And I'm
- 6:47Speaker 2: not saying that we do take it for granted, because
- 6:49Speaker 2: we don't our guys work incredibly hard and they're they're
- 6:51Speaker 2: very diligent about their studying and you know their mindset.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But I think it, yeah, I think it gives a
- 6:58Speaker 2: team confidence. But you can't let it happen over and
- 7:02Speaker 2: over again, right because he's gonna come out on the
- 7:06Speaker 2: right side. So you have to approach the improvements that
- 7:09Speaker 2: you're gonna make. You need to make with great urgency,
- 7:12Speaker 2: and that's what we've done.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, the great escape is always good when it comes
- 7:16Speaker 1: out with a victory, that's for sure. Jim Moore with
- 7:18Speaker 1: us back in the moment. We'll talk about Temple a
- 7:20Speaker 1: little bit more before we start digging into wake Forest
- 7:23Speaker 1: and other topics. This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show
- 7:26Speaker 1: on Lear Field
