- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20Happy Monday. I have so many stories for you
- 0:24guys today. But First off, I just wanted to
- 0:26remind you guys that this is my last week until I am going away
- 0:30for like 2 1/2 weeks. The podcast will be off and I
- 0:34have decided not to do AQ and A this Friday.
- 0:37Unfortunately, I just honestly don't have time and it's my last
- 0:40few days with my family here in Canada.
- 0:42So I just kind of want to like be able to make the most of it.
- 0:46And I wanted to thank everyone for being so supportive of our
- 0:48Carded sponsorship last week. If you guys haven't downloaded
- 0:52Carded and you're looking for an app that is all about like
- 0:55curating your outfits, your aesthetics, your vibe, keeping
- 0:58everything that you have on like a shopping wish list in one
- 1:01place, kind of divided into like Pinterest desk boards,
- 1:04definitely check out Carded. I will put the link down below.
- 1:08Thank you again for Carded for working with us over these last
- 1:11couple of weeks. This episode is actually not
- 1:13sponsored, but I'm just like obsessed with their app.
- 1:15Please download the app with our link down below instead of just
- 1:17downloading it from the App Store so they know that we sent
- 1:19you. OK, let's get into the stories
- 1:21because I have a few of them for you guys.
- 1:23So the first one, of course, Chapel Roan has addressed the
- 1:26backlash over calling out her fans invasive behavior.
- 1:30So Chapel Roan is back after calling out her fans for
- 1:33invading her privacy in public spaces since she skyrocketed to
- 1:37fame. So last week, Chapel posted two
- 1:39Tik toks about how uncomfortable it makes her when fans approach
- 1:42her in public, ask for photos or cross certain boundaries with
- 1:46her. And as we know, this is not the
- 1:48first time that she has spoken about this.
- 1:50She has been very vocal about how she doesn't really like
- 1:52being approached in public. So her videos they were met with
- 1:57kind of mixed reception from fans.
- 2:00On one hand, people were calling her entitled and saying that she
- 2:03knew what she signed up for in pursuing fame.
- 2:07On the other hand, it brought up really meaningful discussion
- 2:10about that fan celebrity dynamic and kind of the entitlement that
- 2:14fans feel to have non-stop access to their favorite artist
- 2:17just because they like resonate with their music.
- 2:20Overall, though, I would say it there did seem to be some
- 2:23confusion about who she was specifically speaking about in
- 2:27those videos. That was obviously because she
- 2:29was quite like emotional and it seemed like those videos were
- 2:32really off the cuff. But it was unclear if she was
- 2:34basically saying like, don't ever come up to me in public to
- 2:37like every single fan or if she was more speaking specifically
- 2:41to super fans who are going way beyond just, you know, like
- 2:44saying hi and asking for a photo.
- 2:46So anyways, now Chapel has clarified what she meant in
- 2:50those Tik Toks. She posted a carousel on
- 2:52Instagram and it was these tech slides and followed up by an
- 2:55Instagram story. So I'll read some of it.
- 2:57It is quite long but I'll read the gist of it.
- 3:00So she said for the past 10 years I've been going non-stop
- 3:03to build my project and it's come to the point that I need to
- 3:05draw lines and set boundaries. I want to be an artist for a
- 3:08very very long time. I've been in too many non
- 3:10consensual physical and social interactions and I just need to
- 3:13lay it out and remind you women don't owe you shit.
- 3:17She talks about how when she's on stage, when she's in drag,
- 3:20when she is like in her work persona Chapel, she's at work.
- 3:25She says in any other circumstance, I am not in work
- 3:27mode, I am clocked out. I don't agree with the notion
- 3:29that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time or attention to
- 3:32people I do not know, do not trust or who creep me out just
- 3:35because they're expressing admiration.
- 3:37And then she talks a lot about being touched.
- 3:39So clearly that is like, I think one of the catalysts for her
- 3:44videos in general was that she experienced either an individual
- 3:48like moment where she was being touched by a super fan and it
- 3:51was so creepy to her that she like came on TikTok and talked
- 3:54about it. Or this has happened multiple
- 3:56times where she like keeps getting touched by super fans.
- 4:00And you know, she talks about how like that's not okay and
- 4:03like do not touch her. And she says do not call her by
- 4:06her given name, Kaylee. And I think that's a pretty good
- 4:10response. I think without having to like,
- 4:13directly address the backlash and like the the questions
- 4:17around her TikTok, she was able to convey like it's not the
- 4:20people who come up to her when she is, you know, at a show, for
- 4:24example, and she's dressed in drag and she is Chapel Roan and
- 4:28she is working. And they're really respectful
- 4:30and they go up to her and they say, I love your music.
- 4:32Can I please have a selfie? And that's that, you know,
- 4:35that's those aren't the fans that she was talking about in
- 4:38those Tik Toks. However, I still stand by my
- 4:41initial thing that I said last week, which is like, there is
- 4:44clearly something going on with the music industry and labels
- 4:50and talent managers and like their lack of support around
- 4:54these emerging artists, especially in the social media
- 4:56age. And I think maybe this is a bit
- 4:58far fetched, but it makes me question if, you know, because
- 5:03these artists are capitalizing on this authenticity and getting
- 5:06so popular because they are so authentic and raw and open in
- 5:10their music or how they show up on social media and that's
- 5:13what's helping, you know, really grow their fanbase.
- 5:17I have to wonder if there is something more sinister going on
- 5:21when it comes to how the labels are like, not supporting these
- 5:26artists because they want them to remain authentic because then
- 5:30they're not changing. And therefore they don't seem as
- 5:33like PR trained. They don't see media trained.
- 5:36And that's going to, you know, resonate more with their
- 5:39audiences. And so therefore, we see these
- 5:41instances like what happened with Chapel, where she doesn't
- 5:43have the proper things in place to like, clearly to keep her
- 5:46safe and make her feel OK on this journey.
- 5:50How many artists have had overnight, you know, explosions
- 5:53like this? There have been a lot.
- 5:55You know, it's not like this is the first time this has ever
- 5:58happened. There's just, it would be
- 6:00overwhelming in general. But I think there is like,
- 6:03there's something missing here, you know, like she is missing
- 6:07some type of support that her team is not giving her.
- 6:12And therefore she has like, come to the Internet to try and like,
- 6:15set those boundaries for herself as opposed to the people who are
- 6:19behind the Chapel run machine, the Chapel run brand, like
- 6:23helping her establish those in a realistic way.
- 6:27You know, when you think about the fact that she's saying she's
- 6:29being touched, I'm trying to think of any other celebrity who
- 6:33is that famous who was consistently being touched by
- 6:37fans. I just don't think that's
- 6:39happening. Like that's fucked up.
- 6:42And that's like, of course, like the fan behavior is like a whole
- 6:46other side of the story. And we've done a lot of deep
- 6:47dives and like conversations, had a lot of conversations on
- 6:50this podcast about like stand them and super fans and the
- 6:54entitlement of fandoms. So this is not like what I'm
- 6:57talking about here is not necessarily related to the fans
- 6:59because we've had lots of those discussions and there's so much
- 7:02going on and so much wrong with fandom culture.
- 7:05What I'm talking about here is like, aside from the fans who
- 7:08like they just should not be touching her, why is there
- 7:11nothing in place that's preventing them from touching
- 7:14her? I don't know what's going on.
- 7:16Hopefully this was a wake up call to her team, to the
- 7:20industry, if that is any part of their strategy where they're
- 7:23like, let's keep them authentic. And we saw that with Renee Rapp,
- 7:25right? Like we, we do keep seeing this
- 7:27where it's like these kind of like artists who come out of
- 7:30almost like Internet fandom and they're not as polished and
- 7:34people like that. And therefore it feels like
- 7:37these teams behind them are forgoing typical like PR in
- 7:41media training and also forgoing the standard procedures of like
- 7:45helping keeping them safe. I don't know, helping, keeping
- 7:48them whatever, you know what I mean?
- 7:51I don't know, I feel like there's something going on here
- 7:53that people are consistently able to touch Chapel Roan like
- 7:57that's that's not OK. OK, the next story that I have
- 8:00for you guys is that Aspen Ovard has confirmed her divorce months
- 8:05after secretly filing. So YouTube.
- 8:08Aspen Ovard has shocked fans by very casually addressing her
- 8:12divorce in a new TikTok video. In a TikTok video posted on
- 8:15August 22nd, Aspen used the demure trend to confirm that she
- 8:20is divorcing her long time partner Parker Ferris.
- 8:24You see how I don't talk about my divorce online?
- 8:26Very demure, very mindful. You see how I considered my
- 8:30children and how it would affect them to have their family's
- 8:32personal information shared all over the Internet.
- 8:35Very smart, very good mom. You see how those magazines and
- 8:39websites wrote articles sharing personal information that I
- 8:42hadn't shared yet when I had just given birth to a premature
- 8:45baby who was in the NICU? Very trashy.
- 8:48Very. Tacky.
- 8:49On April 1st, court filings were obtained by People magazine that
- 8:53showed Aspen had filed for divorce.
- 8:55That same day, Aspen announced the birth of the couples third
- 8:58daughter. Aspen then paused the divorce
- 9:00proceedings in court. But obviously it now seems like
- 9:04they are going ahead again. Aspen also recently announced
- 9:07last month that she is moving to California.
- 9:08So there is definitely like a lot of first like next chapters
- 9:12for her. And for some background context,
- 9:14if you have no idea who Aspen is, she's like an oog YouTube.
- 9:18And that's why people are freaking out because they've
- 9:19been on this journey with her and Parker for like a decade,
- 9:22right? So Aspen and her husband, Parker
- 9:24Ferris married in 2015. Aspen was 19 and Parker was 20.
- 9:29All right, the next story that I have for you guys is I'm going
- 9:32to break down the like most recent Mormon mom talk drama
- 9:36that is happening on TikTok. So the Secret Lives of Mormon
- 9:39Wives is already causing so much drama online and it hasn't even
- 9:43aired. So the show will follow a cast
- 9:45of LDS mommy TikTok stars who were involved in that viral
- 9:49swinging scandal a couple of years ago.
- 9:51Now some other prominent LDS mommy vloggers have started
- 9:55discussing the show and their take on it, and that has caused
- 9:58a lot of drama online. Miranda Mcwhorter, who was
- 10:01involved in the swinging scandal as well, went on weekly Trash
- 10:05podcast this week, and she claimed that she and her friend
- 10:08Camille Monday were offered Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,
- 10:11but they declined. Did you get?
- 10:13Approached by secret lies and Mormon wives at all.
- 10:15You did. Yeah.
- 10:16So Camille and I had multiple interviews or calls with them.
- 10:21Yeah. And it just never like her.
- 10:24And I agreed. It like just like pit in our
- 10:27stomach every time. And I'm not saying that that's
- 10:30like that. It was that that's the thing for
- 10:33our lives. Yeah.
- 10:34For our lives. Like it just didn't feel right
- 10:37at all. Are you already got exploited on
- 10:40the Internet without my consent? You think I'm going to?
- 10:42Ask that so then this clip was starting to go viral and then
- 10:45Taylor Frankie, who also, of course, was involved in the
- 10:48swinging scandal. We know and is the show's
- 10:52central cast member. She posted a TikTok shading what
- 10:56Miranda said. She wrote them quote, we got
- 10:59offered the show and declined how it actually went.
- 11:01Quote, we'll do the show if Taylor isn't on it.
- 11:04So she's basically claiming that Miranda and Camille like didn't
- 11:07want to do the show if Taylor was on it.
- 11:09Then Miranda clapped back with receipts, sharing screenshots of
- 11:12text messages between her, Camille and their manager.
- 11:15Their manager says final thoughts on mom talk show is
- 11:17that we're passing, right? Camille says for me, yes, I'm
- 11:20passing. Miranda said do they even know
- 11:22if Taylor is on the show or not yet?
- 11:24Manager says we won't know until the actual court date, which is
- 11:27in May. Camille says yeah, she pushed it
- 11:29out. Manager says, OK, so pass.
- 11:32And then Miranda says, yeah, I wish I could make a decision
- 11:35after I knew what the verdict was going to be with her, but
- 11:37either way, it's probably not good for me.
- 11:40That is, I guess, supposed to show that they did not really
- 11:43consider Taylor as much as like she is claiming that they did
- 11:47and their decision not to go on it.
- 11:49All right. And the last story that I have
- 11:50for you guys, this is an update. Sophia Lacourt is really leaning
- 11:55into her villain era with an unhinged video response and also
- 12:00her own remix of Ken's viral sound.
- 12:03So Sophia Lacourt is really riding out her viral TikTok
- 12:06moment and going like full villain.
- 12:08Over the weekend, she made a response to all the hate that
- 12:11she's been receiving over the Hallie Cage Reed drama.
- 12:14And in the video, she just really shows like how she's
- 12:19approaching the situation, I think from like a professional
- 12:22standpoint. So I said last week that I think
- 12:25it's obvious that she's like playing the villain that people
- 12:28want her to be in this scenario. I think for her, she's using
- 12:32this moment to like, help launch her acting career.
- 12:35We know she's been an aspiring actress for a long time.
- 12:38So in this video, she basically starts off crying and she's
- 12:42saying, like the hate is too much.
- 12:44And then literally, she just like, flips on a dime.
- 12:47And she's basically like ha, joking, like Psych.
- 12:50I never thought that I would be one of the girls that sets up
- 12:54her camera and cries on the Internet, but I genuinely feel
- 13:01like so many people are just coming on here and bullying me
- 13:06for fun. Like I saw a video today and
- 13:15it's a it's just a video of a girl saying that she wanted to
- 13:20beat me up and then had so many legs.
- 13:27Like I'm scared. Like thank God I'm OK.
- 13:35OK, if you guys actually think that I would come on here and
- 13:39cry, you have the wrong bitch. I have to like get out of
- 13:44character now because you guys make me do too much.
- 13:47Like congratulations, you make a video saying that you want to
- 13:49assault me. Like, do you want a medal, you
- 13:52freak? OK, then she made a remix of
- 13:55Ken's sound that is going viral about her.
- 13:58I never feel the need. To speak on drama, but I
- 14:00actually hate that little ginger bitch.
- 14:02I hate her, I hate her. And everyone is like, I can't
- 14:07believe you made the remix. Like, you're not supposed to
- 14:10make the remix of, like, the sound about you.
- 14:13Like, someone else has to make this.
- 14:15But I mean, honestly, it's popping off.
- 14:17And I think what's so interesting about this strategy
- 14:19is that it literally is working. People are starting to come
- 14:22around to Sophia because people just can't believe how unhinged
- 14:26this is. Like I don't think it's
- 14:27necessarily making her more likable, but people are kind of
- 14:30like, OK, well, this is like entertaining and kind of funny
- 14:33that she's like leaning in so hard and that she seems so
- 14:36unbothered by all of this. And it's so confusing because
- 14:40literally the whole Internet, like everyone on TikTok was
- 14:44dragging her. And for it to not have impacted
- 14:48her, I mean, that feels impossible, right?
- 14:50But she's come, she's playing it up as if it has not impacted her
- 14:54at all. And I think it reminds me of
- 14:56Tricia Paytas. Like I always say this about
- 14:57Tricia Paytas, is that like, you can't tell, especially in her
- 15:00earlier days, you can't tell what's real and what's a bit for
- 15:05the Internet. And that's what makes following
- 15:07her so fascinating. And I think that's what Sophia
- 15:10is doing here. Like you watching her content,
- 15:13you're just confused, Is this real?
- 15:16Is this all for clout? Is this a bit like, how does she
- 15:19actually feel about this situation?
- 15:21And I think we'll never know. But for now, she is like letting
- 15:24herself be the villain in this love triangle.
- 15:28And like I said, it actually is working for her and in her
- 15:31favor, at least in the public eye.
- 15:32All right, guys, well, that's it for today.
- 15:35Oh, I mean, of course, Sabrina Carpenter's Short and Sweet came
- 15:38out. I still, I'm like, not sure how
- 15:41I feel about it. I love taste.
- 15:42I think everyone loves taste but I don't have a strong opinion
- 15:47one way or another yet. I feel like it kind of surprised
- 15:50me how much it was not a departure from like what I I
- 15:54just I expected it to all be more like taste and espresso
- 15:58like very hyper bubble gum pop. I found a lot of the songs
- 16:01reminded me of like her previous work, which is obviously fine,
- 16:04but anyways, I don't have like strong opinions on it yet so I
- 16:07don't really want to talk about it right now.
- 16:09But that is it for today. Thank you so much for listening
- 16:14to Mini scroll. Please rate review and
- 16:15subscribe. I love you guys and I will talk
- 16:18to you tomorrow. Bye.
