- 0:00Speaker 1: Now joining me on the line is Labour's Member for
- 0:03Speaker 1: Solomon Luke Gosling.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Luke, Morning Katie Luke. It's said
- 0:07Speaker 2: to be an interesting day. I would suspect.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I know that we asked the Federal Health Minister about
- 0:13Speaker 1: this a short time ago. We know the Northern territories
- 0:16Speaker 1: obviously moved to a no vax, no traveling to the
- 0:19Speaker 1: Northern Territory policy. The Prime Minister has previously said people
- 0:23Speaker 1: shouldn't be discriminated against based on their vaccination status. And
- 0:27Speaker 1: we know that Pauline Hanson is claiming that she's going
- 0:30Speaker 1: to cause havoc unless Scott Morrison backs her legislation making
- 0:35Speaker 1: it unlawful to discriminate against unvaccinated assies. The Health Minister
- 0:39Speaker 1: said that no, they would not be supporting this legislation.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But Luke, what's it going to mean for this last
- 0:45Speaker 1: or for this week of parliament.
- 0:48Speaker 3: You hit the nail on the head, Codie. It's pretty
- 0:52Speaker 3: willing down here. Obviously, as an election gets closer, the
- 0:58Speaker 3: government seeking to make friends with Pauline Hansen. But what
- 1:05Speaker 3: they should be doing is making sure that, for example,
- 1:09Speaker 3: that we had the debate today that's now been thrown
- 1:11Speaker 3: off the agenda into whether the territory shoot or the
- 1:15Speaker 3: two territories should have the same rights as everyone else
- 1:18Speaker 3: in the country. But as far as those other matters,
- 1:21Speaker 3: I spoke with Greek Hunt on the way down the
- 1:24Speaker 3: federal Health Minister on the way down here, and obviously
- 1:27Speaker 3: said we needed to do more when it comes to
- 1:30Speaker 3: giving people are in the communities the opportunity to get
- 1:34Speaker 3: vaccinated to protect themselves and their families. But also we
- 1:37Speaker 3: needed better communications out there in the communities because there
- 1:41Speaker 3: has been a lot of misinformation and we need to
- 1:45Speaker 3: give people as much information as possible on which debate
- 1:48Speaker 3: their decision about whether they get a vaccine or not.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And just quickly I'll cover off on the Prime minister's
- 1:54Speaker 3: words because he is speaking on both sides of his
- 1:59Speaker 3: mouth at the moment in that he bought in no pay,
- 2:03Speaker 3: which basically meant that there was no childcare subsidy if
- 2:06Speaker 3: your kid was going to go to childcare but didn't
- 2:08Speaker 3: have the required vaccines. I mean, he brought that in
- 2:12Speaker 3: and explained the reasons why that was necessary, but to
- 2:16Speaker 3: chase some votes by basically trying to say that now
- 2:20Speaker 3: he isn't in favor of taking necessarily necessary precautions to
- 2:26Speaker 3: protect people in the community just shows a distinct lack
- 2:30Speaker 3: of leadership on his part.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So what do you reckon needs to happen here, Luke, Well, what.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Needs to happen is the territories and the states need
- 2:40Speaker 3: to be backed by the federal government in what they're
- 2:42Speaker 3: trying to achieve to keep people safe. No one's being
- 2:46Speaker 3: forced to take the vaccine. But what needs to happen
- 2:49Speaker 3: in terms of the territories and their rights is that
- 2:54Speaker 3: we should be able to make our own laws the
- 2:56Speaker 3: same as everyone else. But what's happened is they haven't
- 2:58Speaker 3: backed Sam Marn's bill on territory rights and that is
- 3:04Speaker 3: a crying shame because and they just clearly have no
- 3:08Speaker 3: intention of giving us the same rights as people in
- 3:10Speaker 3: the States. And I've got a petition here from coda NT,
- 3:14Speaker 3: the Council of the Aging NT, has been signed by
- 3:17Speaker 3: thousands of Territorians who say, look, this is about us
- 3:21Speaker 3: not being second class citizens and having the same rights
- 3:24Speaker 3: as everyone else. So leave it up to territorians whether
- 3:28Speaker 3: we want to legislate around voluntary euthanasia as one example,
- 3:33Speaker 3: but give us the same rights as other Australian citizens
- 3:36Speaker 3: to make our own laws. The Morrison government has said no.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Does this mean obviously we know that Sam McMahon had
- 3:44Speaker 1: been pushing obviously for this bill to happen or for
- 3:49Speaker 1: it to be brought forward. Does this mean now because
- 3:52Speaker 1: of the One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson, we'll hijacking. I
- 3:55Speaker 1: guess some would say legislation priorities, that it's not going
- 3:59Speaker 1: to happen now before Christmas, and then when could it
- 4:02Speaker 1: really happen.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Sam McMahon confirmed to me last night when we flew
- 4:08Speaker 3: down from Darwin that it wouldn't be happening this year.
- 4:12Speaker 3: That's the reality of it. But what she probably can't say,
- 4:18Speaker 3: But what is the truth is that the current Morrison
- 4:22Speaker 3: government does not want a debate or any legislation change
- 4:26Speaker 3: that removes the Andrews Bill because whilst Andrews Bill is there,
- 4:30Speaker 3: they have, the current Morrison government, they have the power
- 4:35Speaker 3: to make laws over the territory and to stop us
- 4:39Speaker 3: from making laws for ourselves, and that's wrong and they
- 4:43Speaker 3: should as a priority then in the new year allow
- 4:48Speaker 3: that debate to occur about territorians and their rights, because
- 4:51Speaker 3: we do deserve the same rights as everyone else in
- 4:54Speaker 3: this country.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Well, Luke Olsling, I know it's always an interesting time
- 4:58Speaker 1: when Parliament sits for it is going to be interesting today,
- 5:02Speaker 1: I reckon, given what the Senator Pauline Hanson's obviously putting forward,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and to see who crosses the floor or what happens.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Keep us up to date, mate, let us know.
- 5:11Speaker 2: What goes on.
- 5:14Speaker 3: I'll do my best.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you, Thanks Luke
