- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcast.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Handing out flowers to Anaheim Ducks already out of the gate.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I love that on NHL Unscripted. Special guest Matt Boleski.
- 0:27Speaker 2: He was terrific.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Plus beef with Bettman and players who are popping. Knies out.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Got to give some love to Matthew Knies here. in
- 0:34Speaker 1: the early going, and an awkward moment for Detroit. I'm
- 0:38Speaker 1: back from getting pegged, a space that, well, no one
- 0:41Speaker 1: really wants to be in, but if you're going to
- 0:42Speaker 1: go to.
- 0:42Speaker 3: You've used that before?
- 0:43Speaker 1: Well, episode 101. Not everyone's listened to every episode, J.D.,
- 0:46Speaker 1: so it might be new to you.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Wait, we did 100 episodes?
- 0:50Speaker 1: That's right. Last week was our milestone 100th episode. How
- 0:53Speaker 1: did you celebrate?
- 0:55Speaker 3: I got belligerently drunk, fell down, yelled at some homeless people.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 1:01Speaker 3: That's a hundred episodes.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Can I just say you look fantastic right now, Adnan.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Oh, thanks a lot, J.D.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Sorry, Sal. I'll get you one of these days.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Well, if I may return the compliment, not to you,
- 1:16Speaker 1: but to your wife, the best content going right now
- 1:19Speaker 1: on social media is Jillian.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
- 1:22Speaker 1: She is out of control. Now, J.D. has said before
- 1:24Speaker 1: that she's big into Halloween. And I would say most
- 1:27Speaker 1: of what I've met along the years like Halloween. They
- 1:29Speaker 1: like dressing up. sexy costumes, Catwoman, et cetera. Jill is
- 1:32Speaker 1: killing it. I mean, this is unbelievable. I just saw
- 1:34Speaker 1: Jessica Rabbit post it today. She did. And yesterday, she
- 1:38Speaker 1: got you a Star Wars costume. Tell me all about
- 1:40Speaker 1: that one.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Maz Katan.
- 1:42Speaker 4: That was my favorite so far.
- 1:44Speaker 3: It's so good. It's so funny to see what people
- 1:47Speaker 3: latch on to. And I was like, when she was
- 1:51Speaker 3: proposing this idea, you know, because she's been doing, trying
- 1:55Speaker 3: to do an audition for SNL and she sends in
- 1:57Speaker 3: tapes and stuff like that. She likes characters and, Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 3: And I was like, you just got to put stuff
- 2:02Speaker 3: on Instagram. And she's, I'm like, you love Halloween. She's like,
- 2:05Speaker 3: I love it. She's like, what if I do a
- 2:06Speaker 3: 31 days? And I was like, fuck, I was like,
- 2:09Speaker 3: go for it. So there's some crazy ones coming in.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I've been just absolutely abused. And yeah, yesterday she was like,
- 2:17Speaker 3: yesterday she's like, I have one coming up. There's like a,
- 2:21Speaker 3: there's a bunch that I'm not in it.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 3: She's like, there's a few that I'm not in it.
- 2:25Speaker 3: And she's like, do I still post it? I'm like,
- 2:28Speaker 3: what do you mean? She's like, you've been stealing my thunder.
- 2:30Speaker 3: And I'm like, no, I'm like, it's you. It's not me.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 3: That's like, it's like, it's you. So she's, she's got
- 2:37Speaker 3: some really good ones coming up. Um, the Jessica rabbit
- 2:41Speaker 3: one was good. I was hard as a rock, which
- 2:43Speaker 3: is nice.
- 2:44Speaker 1: She goes, you have no idea how hard it is
- 2:45Speaker 1: to look like a woman like this. And JD is like,
- 2:47Speaker 1: tell me about it.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Yeah. The dynamic is unbelievable. I can't remember. You were
- 2:54Speaker 4: laying on the couch in the other one, and right
- 2:56Speaker 4: at the end, you're like, you're turning me on a
- 2:58Speaker 4: little bit right now. I was just dying laughing. The
- 3:02Speaker 4: dynamic's unbelievable.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Make no mistake about the Demers-Muller relationship. We ride the
- 3:08Speaker 3: roller coaster.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 4: You two are made for each other.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It is definitely spicy.
- 3:14Speaker 3: She's a psycho, and so am I.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 3:18Speaker 4: No question about it.
- 3:19Speaker 1: As far as hockey is concerned, yeah, back from the peg.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Hell of a win, J.D. The Jets over the Avalanche.
- 3:24Speaker 1: The Avalanche had scored 14 goals in their first two games.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Stuart Skinner, Mr. Skin, as Tal has called him, played fantastic.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And as I was saying to Chris Pronger and Blake Bolden,
- 3:33Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you agree with this, this is
- 3:35Speaker 1: good news for the Jets in many ways.
- 3:36Speaker 4: One.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Now there's no rush to trade Hellebuck. You don't want
- 3:39Speaker 1: to play? Fine, we'll suspend you. You're not getting paid
- 3:41Speaker 1: right now by the team anyways. Skinner's playing well. We'll
- 3:43Speaker 1: trade you when somebody gives us an offer that we want,
- 3:46Speaker 1: whether it might be Buffalo, whether it might be San Jose,
- 3:49Speaker 1: whether it might be Utah. So I'm thrilled right now
- 3:51Speaker 1: for the Jets, baby. They missed the playoffs last year,
- 3:53Speaker 1: playing good hockey. Nice win against the Avalanches last night.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I love this. Stuart Skinner is saving the Winnipeg Jets franchise.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Who would have thought in 2026 that Stu Skinner would
- 4:06Speaker 3: be on his redemption tour in Winnipeg. And all the
- 4:10Speaker 3: Edmonton Oilers fans are like, where was this Stuart Skinner?
- 4:14Speaker 3: He looks light. He looks nimble. He's playing great. This
- 4:19Speaker 3: team is playing great in front of him. And I think, listen,
- 4:22Speaker 3: make no mistake, I think this situation is different than
- 4:25Speaker 3: the Larkin one. I think guys are pissed off at Hellebuck.
- 4:28Speaker 3: And I think there's an internal, like, fuck him. We're
- 4:32Speaker 3: going to win without him. Because, like, he's not even around.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I don't even think he's around the rink. So, to me,
- 4:37Speaker 3: I'm like, these guys are playing some great hockey. They
- 4:40Speaker 3: don't have a bad, you know. I'm surprised because, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 3: when we did our predictions, I think we thought that
- 4:48Speaker 3: they'd be missing the playoffs.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You said bubble team.
- 4:51Speaker 3: They're a bubble team, but, like. Viggo Bjork is the
- 4:55Speaker 3: two say they needed. He's second line setter.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Isaac Rosen, Lambert, these young guys are playing really good.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And then Kyle Connor's off to it hot. I think
- 5:02Speaker 3: he's shooting the puck more than I've ever seen him
- 5:04Speaker 3: shoot it. He's already got five goals, but you know,
- 5:07Speaker 3: they look really solid and I think they're playing a
- 5:09Speaker 3: great brand of hockey and Stuart Skinner has been there. Listen,
- 5:12Speaker 3: at the end of the day, you know, they got,
- 5:14Speaker 3: they got shelled by Colorado, but Skinner has been unbelievable.
- 5:18Speaker 3: So this is, Like, Nate, this is, for me, this
- 5:21Speaker 3: is best-case scenario for shovel day off, no?
- 5:24Speaker 4: Oh, he's laughing right now. And I think he's, like
- 5:28Speaker 4: you said, A.V., there is no rush to trade Hellebuck
- 5:31Speaker 4: right now. If you're sitting in this position and you're
- 5:33Speaker 4: winning hockey games with Stuart Skinner and Stevenson, who they
- 5:38Speaker 4: got off waivers, correct? Yes, yes.
- 5:40Speaker 3: What a story that is.
- 5:41Speaker 4: I mean, that's unbelievable. The thing that worries me too, though, is,
- 5:45Speaker 4: Josh Morrissey got hurt, right? He did.
- 5:47Speaker 1: They won that game 5-D in the third quarter, which
- 5:49Speaker 1: I was stunned by.
- 5:50Speaker 4: So that's something to look at. But you know another
- 5:53Speaker 4: bright spot of this team I have to talk about
- 5:55Speaker 4: is this Tyrell Bauer. Great. We got this kid.
- 5:58Speaker 2: What an animal.
- 5:59Speaker 4: It's unbelievable.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Morrissey out.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Bauer in.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Bauer in. And I think.
- 6:06Speaker 4: We're going to have a little bit of a test
- 6:08Speaker 4: for Matthew Olivier this year. I think this Bauer kid
- 6:11Speaker 4: is the real deal.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Bauer, two games, two fights.
- 6:16Speaker 4: There's a lot of bright spots. There's a lot of
- 6:17Speaker 4: bright spots in this team, though. But at the same time,
- 6:21Speaker 4: I just don't know, J.D., if they can sustain it
- 6:23Speaker 4: before you get near a point. That's my worry. This
- 6:27Speaker 4: hot start, I don't know if this doesn't stay like this,
- 6:29Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 6:30Speaker 3: No, listen, do I think they're going to? keep clipping
- 6:33Speaker 3: at this. I mean, Shifley hasn't even really got going
- 6:35Speaker 3: yet either.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Yet to score.
- 6:37Speaker 3: How about that pass last night? What an assist on
- 6:39Speaker 3: that Connor goal. Last game was insane. That pass was
- 6:43Speaker 3: so filthy. Johnny Appleseed dropping dimes like Tom Brady. Like
- 6:48Speaker 3: the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Whoever the quarterback is, I don't know.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I wish I should have had that. That would have
- 6:55Speaker 3: been good TV.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Do you think maybe Hellebuck looks at this Or yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 3: I think he's done. There's no way he goes back there,
- 7:04Speaker 3: but now they can be patient. They can wait. They
- 7:06Speaker 3: can take their time. They can wait for the right deal.
- 7:09Speaker 3: But to your point, yeah, I don't know if they
- 7:11Speaker 3: have enough. And Josh Morrissey's that's the big one. That's
- 7:15Speaker 3: the case. Cause, and just, let's be honest. I don't
- 7:19Speaker 3: know if I agree with you on the Tyrell Bauer
- 7:22Speaker 3: and Matt, Matthew Olivier, like you coming for the King. Like,
- 7:26Speaker 3: you best not miss.
- 7:27Speaker 4: There it is.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Like, Kastelik and Kolsar are tough.
- 7:31Speaker 2: True.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Tough customers. But Olivier's... I.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Mean, I want to see it. He hasn't missed in
- 7:36Speaker 4: the minors in three years. He's been down there fighting everybody.
- 7:40Speaker 4: And you know how it is down in the jungle.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Yeah, the jungle's the jungle. But, I mean, he... Matthew
- 7:45Speaker 3: Olivier would beat the snot out of Kastelik and Kolsar, no?
- 7:49Speaker 4: True, true, true.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Kastelik maybe could hang in there. Yeah, I guess you're right.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Bauer did the same, so... He knocked out Colesar. I mean,
- 7:57Speaker 3: that was a knockout.
- 7:58Speaker 4: And he gave it to a cast that looked pretty good, too.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Why did they play each other? Do we got a schedule?
- 8:02Speaker 4: We got to look at that because that's going to
- 8:03Speaker 4: be a fight for sure.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I might watch that fully naked on the couch covered
- 8:09Speaker 3: in honey.
- 8:09Speaker 1: That's like UFC at the White House. You guys are
- 8:11Speaker 1: fired up for that instead of getting excited for this
- 8:13Speaker 1: hockey fight. The last time with Hellebuck, I asked Scott
- 8:16Speaker 1: O'Neill about it. I said, how do you react to
- 8:18Speaker 1: that as the coach? He said, well, it was simmering
- 8:20Speaker 1: for a while. It wasn't like it was news to me.
- 8:22Speaker 1: In August, officially, when Chevy said, hey, He's not coming.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I said, all right. And you treat it like the
- 8:27Speaker 1: way a player would be if he's injured. Like he's
- 8:29Speaker 1: not here. He's not available.
- 8:30Speaker 4: We move on.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And they're suspending him. They're saving on the cap right now.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I mean, as long as it's going like this, it's
- 8:36Speaker 1: good news right now for Chevy and the Jets. But
- 8:38Speaker 1: eventually they will have to deal and figure things out.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Ovi and Al. Alexander Ovechkin, the big news on Monday,
- 8:43Speaker 1: announcing that this indeed is going to be his final season,
- 8:45Speaker 1: like a true pro. He announces it to his teammates first.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I like the timing, Nate, early in the season. It
- 8:50Speaker 1: reminds me of Mario Rivera with the New York Yankees.
- 8:53Speaker 1: He announced it early. Some might argue it's selfish, but
- 8:56Speaker 1: I think it's nice. You deserve the victory lap, buddy.
- 8:58Speaker 1: You're the greatest goal scorer of all time. To each
- 9:00Speaker 1: arena you go, you know, it'll be the last time
- 9:02Speaker 1: he goes to face the Bruins. The last time he
- 9:04Speaker 1: faces the Flyers. The last time he faces the Kings.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And then each team can give him a gift, a
- 9:07Speaker 1: little pregame ceremony. I got no issue with that. If
- 9:09Speaker 1: you scored 929 goals, I think you're afforded your victory lap.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I think it's a nice way for the fans as well.
- 9:15Speaker 1: There's nothing worse just in life. Imagine you miss a
- 9:17Speaker 1: buddy or an ex or whatever it is. Like, oh,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I'm never going to say goodbye. And this chance, everyone
- 9:21Speaker 1: is going to say goodbye to Ovechkin properly. The Capitals
- 9:23Speaker 1: are a really good team. And I think it makes sense, Nate,
- 9:26Speaker 1: that he's announcing it now and we'll get to enjoy
- 9:28Speaker 1: him for one more year.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I think there's a lot of, there's a few
- 9:32Speaker 4: reasons behind it. I think I do like that he
- 9:35Speaker 4: announces it now rather than waiting until the end of
- 9:37Speaker 4: the season. He's got to answer all the questions. But
- 9:39Speaker 4: I think part of it is, you know, you look
- 9:42Speaker 4: at their roster, you look how deep it is up front.
- 9:45Speaker 4: And I mean, I don't know, in the first few
- 9:47Speaker 4: games that he's played under 15 minutes, I think, right?
- 9:50Speaker 4: And that's been a, I think that was kind of
- 9:54Speaker 4: expected with how deep their forwards are and what they have.
- 9:58Speaker 4: And maybe he's like, you know I don't want to
- 10:01Speaker 4: do this for another year and you know basically not
- 10:03Speaker 4: play and he's already at the end of his career
- 10:05Speaker 4: anyways and their team is so good that I mean
- 10:10Speaker 4: if he plays less it doesn't matter they might get
- 10:13Speaker 4: 10-15 more wins this season because they're that deep so
- 10:16Speaker 4: I mean this is it was sad though like I'm
- 10:18Speaker 4: like you know hearing this I'm like this sucks like
- 10:21Speaker 4: hearing Ovi's you know one more year and I don't know.
- 10:24Speaker 4: He's just done so much for this league, him and Sid.
- 10:28Speaker 4: But just the last 20 years, you just think of Ovi.
- 10:35Speaker 4: I don't know what to make of it just because
- 10:36Speaker 4: I'm such a big fan.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And nobody likes it when you limp to the finish line, JD.
- 10:41Speaker 1: He only had two shifts in the third last night.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I know he wants power play minutes. I don't know
- 10:45Speaker 1: what else he's playing.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Yeah, listen, he's not even on the second power play unit.
- 10:49Speaker 3: It's the first time they've started to pull him off.
- 10:51Speaker 3: But that That's a credit to him. I think he
- 10:53Speaker 3: understands that, and he knows that. And I personally think
- 10:57Speaker 3: he was done last year, and maybe Carberry's like, we're
- 11:01Speaker 3: going to put a team to maybe make one more
- 11:03Speaker 3: run if you want to stay. And they maybe called him.
- 11:06Speaker 3: You know, Leonis just called him and probably was like, listen,
- 11:10Speaker 3: this is what we got.
- 11:11Speaker 2: We need you.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It's not going to be the same, though. It's not
- 11:14Speaker 3: going to be the same. You're not going to get
- 11:16Speaker 3: what you've been getting. And I watched that game last night.
- 11:19Speaker 3: He had some chances. That line of Tuck. Wilson, and
- 11:23Speaker 3: Dubois were fucking so good right now. And I actually
- 11:27Speaker 3: really watched them last game, and I'm like, they need
- 11:29Speaker 3: a D-man. I'm a little worried about their D-core.
- 11:33Speaker 2: One.
- 11:34Speaker 3: They need one. Rasmus Sandin's on the IR. I don't
- 11:36Speaker 3: know how long he's out, but they need somebody. And,
- 11:40Speaker 3: you know, I don't love the Protis line with Jordan Cairo.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Cairo looks like he is uninterested to be on that line.
- 11:49Speaker 3: So I think that needs to get moved. Ryan Leonard's
- 11:51Speaker 3: on the fourth. So they're still working it out. But
- 11:53Speaker 3: for Ovi, I mean, the NHL's not stupid. They give four,
- 11:58Speaker 3: you know, the four games against Pitt. The last one's,
- 12:00Speaker 3: I think, two, three games before the end of the season.
- 12:03Speaker 3: I mean, just a great rivalry, both of them. Faces
- 12:06Speaker 3: of the game. I mean, they really grew the franchise.
- 12:08Speaker 3: They grew all the franchises. They grew the league post-lockout, pre-lockout.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I mean, they came in around the same time. And
- 12:15Speaker 3: what they've done for this league, I mean, it's like what,
- 12:19Speaker 3: and now Celebrini's doing. There's always a guy to carry
- 12:21Speaker 3: the mantle, and these guys have done it so well
- 12:24Speaker 3: and so honorably for so long.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Yeah, Nate? Question for all you guys. Do you think
- 12:29Speaker 4: that they're... I was thinking about this. Do you think
- 12:31Speaker 4: he ends up getting healthy scratched more than a few
- 12:34Speaker 4: times this season? Because you look at their roster, you
- 12:37Speaker 4: just name these guys.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Back-to-back.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Back-to-back, maybe. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 1: But that's tough in terms of pride and negotiating that.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but.
- 12:45Speaker 3: I'll go right to Leo.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 3: You talk about we we got to talk on first
- 12:50Speaker 3: shift uh uh tarik el-bashir nice and he was um
- 12:55Speaker 3: he's been their insider and talked to a few guys
- 12:58Speaker 3: and he was like oh he's like good with whatever
- 13:01Speaker 3: right now like that's the way he's matured in his
- 13:03Speaker 3: leadership and understanding like hey he's not the guy anymore
- 13:08Speaker 3: and there needs to be guys i think he just
- 13:10Speaker 3: wants to go on this one last ride and And
- 13:13Speaker 3: I like it. You know, I think– I didn't mind
- 13:15Speaker 3: that Kopitar did it last year too. I know some–
- 13:17Speaker 3: it's weird. People were, like, a little pissed off that
- 13:19Speaker 3: Kopitar did it last year. But Ovi, they were, like,
- 13:22Speaker 3: happy with it. But, you know, I like– I don't
- 13:25Speaker 3: mind it. You announce it. You kind of just get
- 13:28Speaker 3: it out of the way. You don't have that– you know,
- 13:30Speaker 3: you don't have it hanging there all season long. And,
- 13:32Speaker 3: I mean, talk about the impact he's had on that organization. Like,
- 13:36Speaker 3: Carberry was, like, tearing up when he was telling him
- 13:39Speaker 3: to come speak. I don't know if you guys saw
- 13:40Speaker 3: that video.
- 13:40Speaker 4: I was like, holy shit. Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Like, what a guy. Like, Carberry's like, Ovi, you want
- 13:45Speaker 3: to speak? I was like, how long have you known
- 13:47Speaker 3: this guy?
- 13:49Speaker 2: Two years?
- 13:50Speaker 3: Like, crazy.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Some people think it's selfish by announcing because you're making
- 13:53Speaker 1: it bigger than the team. But I'm like, no, you're not.
- 13:55Speaker 4: I'm with you.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I'm like, it's getting rid of the distraction. Because if
- 13:57Speaker 1: you don't know if he's going to be back, will
- 13:59Speaker 1: he or won't he, I'm not sure. If you just say, yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I'm not going back, then that's it. So wherever he goes,
- 14:03Speaker 1: the first media question is, okay, it's your last time playing, blah, blah, blah.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And then people move on. So I'm with you, GD.
- 14:07Speaker 1: If you're just selfish, I think it's actually just better
- 14:09Speaker 1: to get out of the way. Bauer, Olivia, you guys
- 14:11Speaker 1: can get your popcorn ready January 28th. And Blue Bombers
- 14:14Speaker 1: quarterback is Zach Calero. So I do remember playing with
- 14:17Speaker 1: the Hamilton Tiger Cats. We'll get a jersey for JD.
- 14:19Speaker 4: All right.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Zach Calero, call me.
- 14:23Speaker 1: We thought we were done with the Dylan Larkin saga,
- 14:25Speaker 1: but we were wrong. And take some notes here, Connor Hellebuck.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Once you see you're not going to show up, you
- 14:29Speaker 1: suspend it. I don't think Helly can walk it back. Instead, Larkin,
- 14:32Speaker 1: he gets the Bronx cheer. He is booed by the
- 14:35Speaker 1: HockeyTown people, but then guess what? I'll score a goal,
- 14:37Speaker 1: assist on Victor Arvidsson's game winner, finish second on the
- 14:40Speaker 1: wings over 20 minutes of ice time, was involved with
- 14:42Speaker 1: his teammates in a line brawl in the second period,
- 14:45Speaker 1: and he gets named first star. J.D., this is how
- 14:48Speaker 1: you handle it. You say, I don't want to be here,
- 14:50Speaker 1: but as long as I'm here, I'm going to play
- 14:51Speaker 1: my ass off.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I mean, all the credit in the world goes to
- 14:59Speaker 3: Dylan Larkin there. Honestly, like you can't, that's a man's game.
- 15:03Speaker 3: He played, he played a captain's game. He's, he was
- 15:06Speaker 3: stripped of it. He came in, I mean, to be
- 15:08Speaker 3: able to compartmentalize the booze and the hate that he's
- 15:11Speaker 3: received from Detroit. And rightfully so the way he's handled,
- 15:15Speaker 3: this has been fucking horrendous, but for him to, for
- 15:19Speaker 3: him to like come, but everybody, like the whole thing
- 15:22Speaker 3: has been handled poorly by all parties. But, for him
- 15:26Speaker 3: to come in and be like, you know what? I'm
- 15:27Speaker 3: going to get booed. I'm going to go out and play.
- 15:29Speaker 3: He played a great hockey, but 20 minutes. And I
- 15:33Speaker 3: listened to Todd McClellan, McClellan talk after the game and
- 15:36Speaker 3: was like, listen, he's like, kudos to him. He came
- 15:39Speaker 3: in and he wore it. He took it on the
- 15:41Speaker 3: chin from the, the fan base. And it was like,
- 15:44Speaker 3: he didn't even know what to do when he scored. Like,
- 15:46Speaker 3: he's like, do I celebrate? Do I, what's going on
- 15:48Speaker 3: the fan? And he flipped the fan base. So I
- 15:51Speaker 3: think now to me, like, he's given some closure to
- 15:55Speaker 3: the fan base. And I think it's maybe a little
- 15:58Speaker 3: bit better and a little bit less bitter that he
- 16:01Speaker 3: came in and was like, Hey, I'm still here. I still,
- 16:03Speaker 3: you know, love this city. I'm a Michigan boy. I,
- 16:06Speaker 3: I want to, you know, I love the red wings,
- 16:08Speaker 3: but it just is what it is. It just, it's time.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Maybe there's a little bit less of a sour taste
- 16:12Speaker 3: and maybe he now gets traded more easily because teams
- 16:16Speaker 3: are like, this guy's a player. Like he comes in
- 16:18Speaker 3: and I mean, he showed his character like it, like that.
- 16:21Speaker 3: That's a huge part. I wasn't sure what he had
- 16:23Speaker 3: in there, Dylan Larkin, cause they've, you know, choked in
- 16:27Speaker 3: getting into the playoffs the last five years since he's
- 16:29Speaker 3: been there as the captain. So I'm like, I don't
- 16:30Speaker 3: know what he had inside. I mean, he proved it, man.
- 16:33Speaker 3: It's good for him. Good, good, good, solid thing from him, Nate.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I don't know what you think, but to me, I
- 16:37Speaker 3: was like, you know what? Good job.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Great work. No, he, he, he gained a lot of
- 16:42Speaker 4: respect from me after, after that game, I think just
- 16:44Speaker 4: because I was thinking about, I mean, he like, like
- 16:46Speaker 4: you said, he's from Michigan. I mean, he's through and
- 16:48Speaker 4: through Michigan all the way through college, everything. And Wings fan,
- 16:53Speaker 4: ends up being a captain.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Fuck, Nate wanted to put him in a fucking armbar
- 16:56Speaker 3: in a triangle.
- 16:57Speaker 4: I did, man. I grew up a Wings fan, so
- 17:00Speaker 4: that would have hit me a little bit. I was like, fuck, man,
- 17:03Speaker 4: you're the captain of the Detroit Red Wings. You're right, though.
- 17:06Speaker 4: It's been handled so poorly from the ownership, management, everybody.
- 17:11Speaker 4: It's just been an absolute debacle. But I think for
- 17:15Speaker 4: him to, like you said, and I even was thinking
- 17:18Speaker 4: about him being injured, too. You know you're alone. You
- 17:21Speaker 4: know you're away from the team. You're isolated. And he
- 17:25Speaker 4: still manages to go out there, like you said, and
- 17:27Speaker 4: compartmentalize and show up. And he's probably getting chirped, too.
- 17:31Speaker 4: I mean, we know he is from Nick Cousins. You
- 17:32Speaker 4: saw that. Because he was giving it to him. Like,
- 17:36Speaker 4: that was ruthless.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Because he's such a rat, too.
- 17:39Speaker 4: He's such a rat.
- 17:39Speaker 3: He's such a rat.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Such a rat. I mean, it was impressive. I was
- 17:44Speaker 4: really impressed by his performance with everything that's going on.
- 17:47Speaker 4: And like you said, he had to man up. And
- 17:50Speaker 4: he did, man. He did.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Any chance he stays, Nate?
- 17:53Speaker 2: No.
- 17:54Speaker 4: I don't think there's any way. I think even from
- 17:59Speaker 4: his interview after the game, he made it sound like
- 18:02Speaker 4: this is going to play itself out. I'm going to
- 18:04Speaker 4: play as hard as I can and eventually I'm going
- 18:06Speaker 4: to get moved.
- 18:08Speaker 3: But it's like, can they? They're not giving Horkoff anything
- 18:13Speaker 3: to do anything long term. He's got to go through
- 18:15Speaker 3: three rungs of approval. What are they doing management now?
- 18:19Speaker 3: I think Larks, like, put the ball firmly in their court, like, hey, hey, bitches. Like,
- 18:25Speaker 3: come on.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Like, I'm worth something, you know?
- 18:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:28Speaker 3: So, we'll see.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Early season overreactions, JD. I want you to pick one
- 18:33Speaker 1: of these that stands out to you, whichever one you
- 18:34Speaker 1: feel the most passionate about. Four and one Rangers. Oilers
- 18:37Speaker 1: allowing 16 goals in four games, but they're also three
- 18:40Speaker 1: on one. The 2-0-1 Wild. We already mentioned the 3-0-1 Jets.
- 18:44Speaker 1: That's fine. Or maybe the 3-1 Mammoth for our by
- 18:48Speaker 1: Jordan Schmaltz because Nick Schmaltz is off to an incredible start.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Which one do you got?
- 18:54Speaker 3: Listen, as much as I want to– I had– I'm
- 18:57Speaker 3: not surprised with Utah.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I had them– we had them– I had them picked
- 19:02Speaker 3: making a run. I had the Rangers. Cannot be the Rangers. 4-1. Like,
- 19:07Speaker 3: the Oilers have– the last two games, they have looked
- 19:10Speaker 3: really good– even with all their injuries. The more on
- 19:13Speaker 3: the oiler side, I'd talk about Bouchard's on fire, but
- 19:16Speaker 3: let's talk about the Rangers. Honestly, the New York Rangers
- 19:20Speaker 3: have come in and surprised everybody.
- 19:22Speaker 2: They are.
- 19:22Speaker 3: It's not like they're fluky wins. They're playing some good
- 19:25Speaker 3: hockey and they're getting Shesty's on fire to start the season,
- 19:29Speaker 3: scoring goals, making us have an assist, you know, just
- 19:34Speaker 3: studly their decors, more solid. The pickups have fit really
- 19:38Speaker 3: well with Dursley, Albert Smiths has come in and been
- 19:42Speaker 3: a stalwart right away, which is amazing. That's what you
- 19:45Speaker 3: want from a top 10 pick. And then up front, like,
- 19:48Speaker 3: I mean, Nate, talk about what the every will Cooley,
- 19:51Speaker 3: I think, and talk about him going down to the
- 19:53Speaker 3: third line. was the best thing for his career and
- 19:56Speaker 3: for this team he's not a first line guy i
- 19:58Speaker 3: don't and i don't think he wants to be so
- 20:00Speaker 3: like they all have the role everybody's slotted and that
- 20:04Speaker 3: second line of jt miller and dora feyev and uh
- 20:08Speaker 3: and cartier they have a fuck some really good chemistry
- 20:11Speaker 3: so I just, like, what are you seeing from the
- 20:13Speaker 3: forward group? But this team, to me, is, like, they
- 20:15Speaker 3: look great early on, surprisingly.
- 20:18Speaker 4: No, I think what you said, how they're slotted now,
- 20:20Speaker 4: especially a guy like Will Cooley. Like, this guy had
- 20:22Speaker 4: over what? He's had over 600 hits in the last
- 20:24Speaker 4: two seasons.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Why does he want to be on the first line?
- 20:26Speaker 4: Yeah, he's a third-line guy, and he's big, and, you know,
- 20:29Speaker 4: he's fought a couple times this year already. And I
- 20:32Speaker 4: like how Mike Sullivan has roles created for these guys. Like,
- 20:36Speaker 4: he's having these guys... kill penalties, be the, be the
- 20:39Speaker 4: first guys that, you know, jump on the boards to kill,
- 20:41Speaker 4: kill penalties. I think that's been big. And, um, you
- 20:44Speaker 4: said it too. I, I, I think that second D
- 20:46Speaker 4: pair with Pedersen and Jersey has like stabilized big time,
- 20:49Speaker 4: their whole D4. They didn't have that. No, they didn't
- 20:52Speaker 4: have that at all. And then you have, I mean,
- 20:55Speaker 4: I think Albert Smith is on your last pair, right?
- 20:57Speaker 4: And he's 18 years old. And I mean, he's, this
- 21:00Speaker 4: guy's like, it's going to be a player, but it's, it's,
- 21:04Speaker 4: I don't know. It, They can score. Their power play
- 21:08Speaker 4: looks good. I mean, it's– I don't know. I have
- 21:11Speaker 4: the Jets for my team just because I just think
- 21:13Speaker 4: with Morrissey and they just seem thin. That's the team
- 21:17Speaker 4: for me that's surprising. But, man, the Rangers are– they
- 21:21Speaker 4: look good. They look really good.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Tal, you have a thought on the Oilers?
- 21:25Speaker 6: I mean, I just think they're playing with such FU
- 21:29Speaker 6: energy right now.
- 21:30Speaker 7: I think we all pissed off the Oilers, all of us.
- 21:33Speaker 7: With our comment.
- 21:34Speaker 3: What's that?
- 21:34Speaker 7: You don't like our team? You don't like our coach?
- 21:37Speaker 7: You don't like our signings? You don't like our goaltending? Well,
- 21:39Speaker 7: check this out. We're just going to roll. Hold on.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah. I think that's good, Tal. Like, honestly. But, I mean,
- 21:47Speaker 3: they got Devin Levi, who's pitched. He gave up one
- 21:51Speaker 3: and then two last game against Anaheim. I thought he
- 21:53Speaker 3: was great last night. Because that game could have got
- 21:56Speaker 3: out of hand early. And I just thought he outplayed Dostal.
- 22:00Speaker 3: And then, or sorry, outplayed Villejuso. And then they got
- 22:03Speaker 3: Freddie Anderson that's still coming back. No Nugent Hopkins, no Hyman.
- 22:07Speaker 3: My call was that Edmonton was going to run away
- 22:09Speaker 3: with the Pacific. It's looking early like it's going to
- 22:13Speaker 3: be them in Vegas, but they look unbelievable. Leon looks insane.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Vasily Podkolzin has been nothing short of, you know, again,
- 22:25Speaker 3: it's like people say like, oh, it's so easy to
- 22:28Speaker 3: play with those guys. I'm like, no, it's not because
- 22:30Speaker 3: there's a revolving door of guys that play there. And
- 22:33Speaker 3: if you can stick with him, I mean, Pac-12s might
- 22:34Speaker 3: get 30 this year on that line.
- 22:37Speaker 1: That would be nice. I want to go next to
- 22:39Speaker 1: a topic which is always near and dear to J.D.
- 22:42Speaker 1: 's heart because he's so pro-Barkov. So I feel like
- 22:44Speaker 1: this was painful for my man Demers, a rough week
- 22:46Speaker 1: for the Panthers. So Alexander Barkov expected to be a
- 22:49Speaker 1: 6-8 long-term injury reserve, went in awkwardly battling for a puck,
- 22:54Speaker 1: overtime loss to your Sharks last Thursday. Good news was
- 22:57Speaker 1: that Brad Marsham returned to the lineup, even scored a goal.
- 23:00Speaker 1: But the next game, Tuesday night in L.A., Martian helped
- 23:02Speaker 1: out the guys' ugly lower body injury. Panthers 2-0-2. I
- 23:06Speaker 1: think all collectively we thought the Panthers would be back,
- 23:08Speaker 1: Stanley Cup contender. How concerning this early, J.D., injuries to
- 23:11Speaker 1: both those guys?
- 23:14Speaker 3: It hurts for Florida again. Same shades of last year.
- 23:18Speaker 3: You know, they just– two big pieces right away. That
- 23:20Speaker 3: Martian one didn't look good. And, you know, Barkey at
- 23:23Speaker 3: least kind of got up. Martian looked like it was–
- 23:26Speaker 3: I don't know if– I mean, I'll be interested to
- 23:29Speaker 3: see at his age, how effective he can be after
- 23:32Speaker 3: coming off of a, another bad one. So yeah, it's,
- 23:37Speaker 3: it's tough. They're going to, they have a lot, they
- 23:39Speaker 3: got a lot of depth, but Markstrom.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Has been good.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Their decors guy, this might open the door for Dylan Larkin.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Now this might do it. If I'm, if I'm Zito,
- 23:49Speaker 3: I'm looking. So, but now they're, you know, the blood's
- 23:51Speaker 3: in the water. So teams are going to probably be
- 23:53Speaker 3: trying to get their pound of flesh, but, Yeah, it's interesting.
- 23:58Speaker 3: It's tough. I hate seeing Barkey go down again eight weeks.
- 24:00Speaker 3: At least he staves off surgery, but again, it's two months.
- 24:04Speaker 3: It's a lot of hockey. We're going to be in
- 24:06Speaker 3: a different world in two months, so we'll see what
- 24:08Speaker 3: 30 games away from him playing. They could be chasing
- 24:13Speaker 3: it again.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Yeah, they could be.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I was going to say, Nate, Marchant week to week
- 24:18Speaker 1: according to Pierre Lebrun. So two months of no Barcock
- 24:21Speaker 1: and Marchant could be a couple of weeks.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's... The thing that I was like,
- 24:27Speaker 4: the silver lining when I was watching when they're playing
- 24:29Speaker 4: the Kings is Matthew Kachuk has this ability. I was
- 24:33Speaker 4: telling Boiler and Rupert that yesterday. Like, he has this
- 24:35Speaker 4: ability to change the game, whether it's a hit, fight, goal,
- 24:39Speaker 4: you know, doing his thing in front of the net.
- 24:41Speaker 4: He did that against the Kings. And another guy is Brady. Like,
- 24:44Speaker 4: Brady's been quiet, right? Like, they're going to need him
- 24:47Speaker 4: to get going. Like, that's another one. He sucked. He sucked. Yeah,
- 24:51Speaker 4: he's not been good. And they're going to need these guys.
- 24:54Speaker 4: You know, I mean, this is why they have this depth. And,
- 24:57Speaker 4: I mean, no one's feeling sorry for you with these injuries, right,
- 25:00Speaker 4: especially in that division. So I think the silver lining, too,
- 25:04Speaker 4: is Barkov. Like, that was, like, great news because you're just–
- 25:08Speaker 4: we were all kind of holding our breath.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Like, is this going to be a whole season thing again?
- 25:12Speaker 4: Yeah. So that was actually good news in a way.
- 25:14Speaker 4: So the Marchand one also, it's just– Yeah, the Panthers,
- 25:20Speaker 4: they've been going through it the last couple seasons now.
- 25:22Speaker 1: See if they can overcome those injuries. When we come back, though,
- 25:25Speaker 1: we'll turn to our special guest. Matt Boleski will join us,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and then we'll come back with a little bit of
- 25:30Speaker 1: players popping on the other side of NHL Unscripted. Don't
- 25:33Speaker 1: go anywhere. We'll be right back.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Our next guest was drafted in the fourth round by
- 25:50Speaker 3: the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 2006 NHL draft. He
- 25:53Speaker 3: went on to record 76 goals and 158 points in
- 25:56Speaker 3: 477 career NHL games with the Ducks, Bruins, and Rangers.
- 26:00Speaker 3: He also buried me 10 times in my career. It's
- 26:03Speaker 3: Matt Boleski. Matt, what's up, my man?
- 26:06Speaker 2: Hey, how's it going, guys? Thanks for having me.
- 26:08Speaker 3: It's great to have you, man.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Honestly.
- 26:11Speaker 3: you know, we'll get to your background, everything you got
- 26:14Speaker 3: going on behind you and your collector, but just talk
- 26:17Speaker 3: about a little bit, you know, have you been watching
- 26:18Speaker 3: any of the games so far this season? You know,
- 26:20Speaker 3: who are you following and what sticks out to you
- 26:23Speaker 3: so far this year?
- 26:24Speaker 5: I haven't actually got too many games due to my
- 26:27Speaker 5: son's playing hockey. So I'm in the rink pretty much
- 26:29Speaker 5: every night, but I haven't keeping up with it now.
- 26:32Speaker 5: I think I had someone asked me the other day,
- 26:35Speaker 5: and I think Montreal is kind of my horse this year.
- 26:37Speaker 2: They, they seem pretty exciting.
- 26:39Speaker 3: So, Well, Nate's happy, but, you know, piggybacking off that,
- 26:44Speaker 3: talk about being a hockey dad. Is it different from,
- 26:48Speaker 3: you know, do you remember? Does it bring you back
- 26:49Speaker 3: to when you were playing minor hockey, and how's it been?
- 26:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been fun, man. Like, seeing the joy and, like,
- 26:57Speaker 5: how much the kid likes it. Like, he really loves
- 26:59Speaker 5: playing hockey, and he stays out and picks up pucks.
- 27:02Speaker 2: I'm like, good.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Got that rookie stuff in him, so I'm doing something right,
- 27:07Speaker 5: you know?
- 27:07Speaker 2: So, yeah. It's fun. It's crazy.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Everyone knows youth hockey is a whole new world now.
- 27:13Speaker 5: It's four times a week, not that one time. But,
- 27:16Speaker 5: you know, if he's loving it, then away he goes.
- 27:19Speaker 4: What position do you think he's going to play, Matty?
- 27:24Speaker 2: He's playing left wing. Oh, they're six, right?
- 27:26Speaker 5: So he just chases that puck around. But he likes
- 27:29Speaker 5: to take slap shots. So he said D, and then
- 27:31Speaker 5: he realized he had to play defense, I think.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So I don't know. He'll probably be a forward. We'll see.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Yeah, they'll probably be running guys just like you did. So, Matty,
- 27:42Speaker 4: you had a great run the year after you were drafted.
- 27:44Speaker 4: First team to draft you, Anaheim, obviously. They win the
- 27:46Speaker 4: Stanley Cup, and then Belleville Bulls, you have a great season,
- 27:50Speaker 4: make it to the Memorial Cup. Unfortunately, you guys couldn't
- 27:53Speaker 4: get past Kitchener in the OHL Finals and the M-Cup Semis,
- 27:55Speaker 4: but what are some of your favorite memories from those
- 27:58Speaker 4: moments and that year?
- 28:01Speaker 2: And that year is a great year.
- 28:03Speaker 5: You know how it is when you're on a winning team.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Those are the ones that really last. And we still
- 28:08Speaker 5: do a golf trip, me and a couple guys from
- 28:10Speaker 5: that team. We've been doing that for 10-plus years every summer.
- 28:13Speaker 2: So, you know, actually, like, losing to Kitchener in seven,
- 28:16Speaker 2: we were down 3-0.
- 28:16Speaker 5: And then the comeback to go to game seven is
- 28:19Speaker 5: probably what I really remember. Like, the team rally together
- 28:22Speaker 5: was awesome. Unfortunately, couldn't close it out. But, you know,
- 28:26Speaker 5: those are relationships and stuff that last forever.
- 28:29Speaker 3: I mean, mention to the fans listening about the men cup,
- 28:33Speaker 3: you know, if we have some American or Canadian fans,
- 28:35Speaker 3: but just how the impact and how, you know, being
- 28:40Speaker 3: in that tournament and just the run-up in junior, like
- 28:43Speaker 3: the culmination of just how amazing that just the competitiveness
- 28:47Speaker 3: of all that is. Yeah.
- 28:49Speaker 5: Like it's what it's 60 teams or yeah, 60 teams
- 28:53Speaker 5: plus that, that fight for it.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And it, It is.
- 28:56Speaker 5: It's a quick kind of whirlwind when you're in it,
- 28:58Speaker 5: of course, like hockey is. But, you know, being able
- 29:02Speaker 5: to be in the Memorial Cup, looking back on pictures,
- 29:05Speaker 5: it's just what you dream of when you're watching it. So, like,
- 29:09Speaker 5: the Stanley Cup, it goes Memorial Cup and Stanley Cup, right?
- 29:12Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, it's crazy. I got traded the year
- 29:16Speaker 3: of my Mem Cup year, so I missed it. But
- 29:18Speaker 3: it was in Moncton. But you spent three seasons with
- 29:21Speaker 3: the Belleville Bulls, and I wanted to ask, you know,
- 29:26Speaker 3: A lot of it was alongside P.K. Subban. Now, I
- 29:29Speaker 3: know P.K. Subban can be polarizing at times, but talk
- 29:33Speaker 3: a little bit about what it's like playing with a
- 29:35Speaker 3: young P.K. and a young up-and-coming P.K. Has he changed
- 29:39Speaker 3: at all?
- 29:42Speaker 2: I think so. I don't know. He still talks a lot.
- 29:44Speaker 5: But he, uh, he, no PK, like the energy, you
- 29:47Speaker 5: see this guy, he, the energy he brings to life
- 29:50Speaker 5: is pretty awesome. Like he, he brought the same thing.
- 29:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:53Speaker 2: He had to harness it a little.
- 29:54Speaker 5: I was, I was the captain had to kind of
- 29:56Speaker 5: control him a little bit at times, but, uh, you know,
- 29:59Speaker 5: we still, I think I talked to him a little
- 30:01Speaker 5: bit last week. Like he, He's done so well with
- 30:04Speaker 5: his platform, with the charity stuff, his hospital stuff.
- 30:08Speaker 2: He's really good, and I think he's meant for TV.
- 30:11Speaker 5: The guy's outfits, he's just always constantly putting on a show,
- 30:15Speaker 5: but it's fun to watch.
- 30:17Speaker 4: That last outfit, I don't know if you guys saw
- 30:19Speaker 4: it the other night, the V-neck long sleeve with the
- 30:24Speaker 4: flared out. Hey, you've got.
- 30:26Speaker 3: To have a story.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 30:28Speaker 3: He looked like a pirate or he looked like he
- 30:30Speaker 3: was wearing a doily or something. But I, listen, high
- 30:33Speaker 3: fashion is high fashion. I wear like, you know, I
- 30:36Speaker 3: wear whatever the shirt is, is, is probably bargained Goodwill
- 30:40Speaker 3: at this point. But, uh, what you mentioned, like having
- 30:43Speaker 3: a rain in and harness PK, was there ever a
- 30:45Speaker 3: moment where you had to kind of grab him by
- 30:47Speaker 3: the scruff and you being the captain, like, dude, like relax.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Any good stories come to mind?
- 30:53Speaker 5: Yeah, we, we definitely, we actually had an altercation in
- 30:56Speaker 5: the dressing room.
- 30:57Speaker 2: No. Like that.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Okay.
- 30:59Speaker 5: When he was young and I was just young kids
- 31:02Speaker 5: kind of going at it, you know how it is
- 31:04Speaker 5: in the junior room. It kind of, it can get
- 31:06Speaker 5: a little wild and, and he was a confident kid,
- 31:09Speaker 5: which he, you know, that's kind of.
- 31:11Speaker 2: What made him what he was.
- 31:12Speaker 5: Like he would say what he thought and sometimes say
- 31:15Speaker 5: too much, but you know, he.
- 31:17Speaker 2: He worked hard. He's a great player.
- 31:19Speaker 5: And, uh, you know, I was, I'm happy to watch,
- 31:23Speaker 5: like watch him now. The confidence is not outlandish.
- 31:26Speaker 2: It's earned, right? So it's, it's good to see.
- 31:30Speaker 4: You know, after the junior career, you get, you get
- 31:32Speaker 4: called up to the Ducks. You're 20 years old and
- 31:35Speaker 4: there's Timu Solani and Chris Pronger, Getzey, Pears, Scotty Niemeyer, Jaguar,
- 31:41Speaker 4: and then Randy Carlisle's head coach. What was it like
- 31:44Speaker 4: for you? Like, was there, was it a, like, what
- 31:47Speaker 4: was the feelings and were there any stories you have
- 31:49Speaker 4: that just jumped out right away?
- 31:51Speaker 5: Yeah, well, my first game, first game ever, I got
- 31:55Speaker 5: called up. I was in Iowa, and I got called
- 31:57Speaker 5: up after pregame skate. So I flew from Iowa to Anaheim.
- 32:01Speaker 5: It's not a direct flight for sure.
- 32:03Speaker 3: That's not?
- 32:04Speaker 2: No.
- 32:05Speaker 3: Not at all.
- 32:07Speaker 5: Ate some pizza in the airport in between flights, then
- 32:11Speaker 5: got picked up in a cop cruiser, bag in the back,
- 32:14Speaker 5: lights on, got there after warm-up. So everyone's like coming off.
- 32:18Speaker 5: I'm starting to get dressed like eating a banana. They're
- 32:20Speaker 5: just looking at me like Pronger walks in. Neidermart walks
- 32:23Speaker 5: in like this kid's playing tonight. And, you know, I
- 32:26Speaker 5: probably never felt better on the ice in the game.
- 32:29Speaker 5: You don't need warm up. Just straight to it. But,
- 32:32Speaker 5: you know, I think it was really cool coming in.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Like it's all the guys that watched.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Right.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Like I caught that air of.
- 32:41Speaker 5: All those players and then getting out to play with them,
- 32:43Speaker 5: like lined up against Joe Sackick, the Danny.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Heat, you know, like just what an era. Yeah. It's like,
- 32:50Speaker 2: that's my favorite era of hockey.
- 32:51Speaker 5: Obviously I watched it religiously, but, uh, being able to
- 32:55Speaker 5: get that and kind of transfer into playing against McDavid is, uh,
- 32:59Speaker 5: you know, it was pretty cool.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Who was a mentor for you when you were up
- 33:02Speaker 3: there with, with the ducks. And I know you kind
- 33:04Speaker 3: of went up and down a little bit, but you know, and, and,
- 33:07Speaker 3: such as the way it works when you're kind of
- 33:09Speaker 3: really fighting for a job and you've got to do
- 33:11Speaker 3: those things and be that kind of role player. But, like,
- 33:14Speaker 3: for you, who's a mentor that you talk to a
- 33:17Speaker 3: lot and that helped you in those early years?
- 33:20Speaker 5: You know, there's a pretty good list of them. Like,
- 33:22Speaker 5: I had some good ones for sure. You know, I
- 33:24Speaker 5: had Tommer and Anaheim, me and him. Maybe we talked
- 33:28Speaker 5: a little too much off ice sometimes, but.
- 33:33Speaker 4: And we hung out when I was on the sauce, too, before.
- 33:37Speaker 3: Yeah, when you're talking at the bar. Hey, if you
- 33:40Speaker 3: know where a guy's going to be at the bar,
- 33:41Speaker 3: you know where he's going to be on the ice.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I was usually there.
- 33:44Speaker 5: We were side-by-side in both, yeah, for sure. Well, Corey Perry,
- 33:48Speaker 5: I played with his brother Adam, actually, my last year
- 33:51Speaker 5: in Belleville. So when I got there, they told me
- 33:54Speaker 5: to get a place. He's like, just come live with me.
- 33:56Speaker 5: So he always kind of took me under his wing. Uh,
- 34:00Speaker 5: he recently lost his mother actually, which is really sad
- 34:03Speaker 5: to hear. And, you know, looking, looking, uh, looking out
- 34:06Speaker 5: for that family, but they, uh, that guy definitely took
- 34:10Speaker 5: me under his wing. He doesn't, people see him as
- 34:12Speaker 5: a quiet guy, but, uh, you know, he's got a heart.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Of gold and took care of me really well.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Let's talk about that, Matty, because we were talking about
- 34:20Speaker 4: the worm before we, uh, before we came on and,
- 34:23Speaker 4: you know, just how much of, uh, presence he is,
- 34:28Speaker 4: you know, off the ice, you know, and you just
- 34:31Speaker 4: said it, like, before we talk about what he did
- 34:35Speaker 4: on the ice and as an opponent and how much
- 34:37Speaker 4: of a, you know, shit disturber he is, you know,
- 34:41Speaker 4: I guess you should talk about, yeah, his, you know,
- 34:44Speaker 4: who he is off the ice because as his teammate, like,
- 34:47Speaker 4: I didn't realize it until I played with him and
- 34:50Speaker 4: realized how much of an unbelievable teammate he is.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Yeah, like, Well, like I said, when I move into
- 34:58Speaker 5: his house, he never asked me for anything. He took
- 35:01Speaker 5: care of me, took care of everything, pretty much. Showed
- 35:04Speaker 5: me the ropes, drove me to practice, all of that.
- 35:07Speaker 5: But watching him at home, he'd come home, he'd rest,
- 35:12Speaker 5: he'd watch hockey, and he'd rest. The guy, all he
- 35:16Speaker 5: did was take care of himself. Yeah, we had some
- 35:19Speaker 5: fun as.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Well, but he was a true pro.
- 35:22Speaker 5: And then the way he worked, his preparation, To the
- 35:25Speaker 5: point of, like, it was exactly to the minute, I think,
- 35:28Speaker 5: almost on a daily basis, what he would do at
- 35:30Speaker 5: the rink. And that's what it takes to play, what
- 35:33Speaker 5: is it, 22 years now?
- 35:36Speaker 2: 23? I've lost track.
- 35:38Speaker 3: I've lost track on him. It's like Obi and Sid,
- 35:40Speaker 3: I'm just like, yep, there you go.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a true pro.
- 35:44Speaker 5: And then, like, as a person, he comes off, you
- 35:48Speaker 5: see him on the ice, you see him stone-faced, but
- 35:51Speaker 5: that's not.
- 35:52Speaker 2: That's not him. He's got a heart of gold, man.
- 35:54Speaker 2: He's a great guy.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Any good moments of him chirping or guys that wanted
- 36:01Speaker 3: to kill him all the time? Is anything that kind
- 36:04Speaker 3: of stood out to you? There's got to be a
- 36:06Speaker 3: moment where you're just laughing your ass off.
- 36:10Speaker 2: He would do a ton of little TV timeouts.
- 36:13Speaker 5: He's shooting water in guys' gloves when they're drying them
- 36:16Speaker 5: on the bench. He wasn't one to chirp all that much, really,
- 36:20Speaker 5: but he was always poking someone here or doing something, putting,
- 36:23Speaker 5: moving people's stuff out of the way.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Like just, it was endless. He didn't turn off. That's
- 36:29Speaker 2: for sure.
- 36:29Speaker 5: When he was, when he was doing.
- 36:31Speaker 3: It, uh, during the lockout, um, in 2012, you ended
- 36:36Speaker 3: up going to play for Coventry blaze in the, in
- 36:39Speaker 3: the EIHL. How did that come to be? How was
- 36:41Speaker 3: that experience for you?
- 36:43Speaker 5: Oh, it was awesome, man. It was pretty fun. They, uh, Well,
- 36:46Speaker 5: I was sitting at home, right? I was going into,
- 36:49Speaker 5: I think I was going into a contract year. And
- 36:51Speaker 5: once everyone kind of left, guys were signing, I'm like,
- 36:53Speaker 5: I can't. I'm not going to be able to keep
- 36:55Speaker 5: pace at home, skating by myself or with a junior team.
- 36:58Speaker 5: So my agent and I and my dad just kind
- 37:01Speaker 5: of said, like, I'll pretty much go anywhere in Europe
- 37:04Speaker 5: to play. And it just happened to work out to
- 37:06Speaker 5: be Coventry. The fans are awesome. They treat it like
- 37:10Speaker 5: a football or soccer match there. Like they're chanting the
- 37:13Speaker 5: whole time. You know, you go to the pub after,
- 37:16Speaker 5: it's just all the fans again. You just go hang
- 37:18Speaker 5: out with them.
- 37:20Speaker 2: You know, you'd get Mondays.
- 37:21Speaker 5: I think we had Monday and Tuesday off, and then
- 37:23Speaker 5: you just rode a bus for two days straight at
- 37:25Speaker 5: the end of the week. But, like, it was a
- 37:27Speaker 5: wicked experience. My wife came over. We traveled, went to Spain.
- 37:31Speaker 5: We were an hour to London on the train. You know,
- 37:34Speaker 5: it was just a different atmosphere, but it was a
- 37:38Speaker 5: lot of fun. Plus, I think I played center. I'd play, like,
- 37:40Speaker 5: 30 minutes a night when the season started. I was like, Oh,
- 37:44Speaker 5: that's perfect. I only got to do like 12 minutes
- 37:46Speaker 5: of ice time on a good night. So I'm good.
- 37:50Speaker 2: How was that?
- 37:51Speaker 3: Did anybody chirp you guys? Like, was it, how are
- 37:54Speaker 3: the guys?
- 37:54Speaker 5: Uh, they were all pretty good. Like I went over
- 37:56Speaker 5: there saying like, okay, don't fight. Like don't get hurt.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Pretty much is what I was banking on. First game,
- 38:02Speaker 5: bury a guy and fight. And like the first period,
- 38:04Speaker 5: I'm like, man, I said I wasn't going to do this, but, uh, no,
- 38:09Speaker 5: it was, uh, it was fun.
- 38:10Speaker 2: It was like, I think biz was over there in Cardiff. Um,
- 38:14Speaker 2: There was a couple other guys, so it was good.
- 38:16Speaker 2: It was a fun time.
- 38:17Speaker 4: I was just going to say, you would probably fit
- 38:19Speaker 4: in so well over there, just the culture and everything.
- 38:23Speaker 3: You and Biz?
- 38:24Speaker 2: Perfect.
- 38:24Speaker 3: The golden age of EIHL hockey.
- 38:27Speaker 2: We had a fun time.
- 38:29Speaker 5: A fight, I think almost in a handshake, there was
- 38:31Speaker 5: a brawl. I think there was brawl. A guy on
- 38:33Speaker 5: our team punched a fan. Like it was like slap shot, man.
- 38:36Speaker 5: They're like, come knocking on the door.
- 38:38Speaker 4: But like you, like you, like you'd fit in in
- 38:40Speaker 4: the culture over there too. Like it was just, I
- 38:42Speaker 4: feel like it would have been a perfect fit. Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Yeah. English ales, the cast ales are awesome. They're great.
- 38:48Speaker 2: So it was a good spot.
- 38:50Speaker 4: Matt, your, your last season, Anaheim, uh, Ilya Brizgalov came
- 38:55Speaker 4: to play for us with Bruce, the Brizzy Bear. He
- 39:00Speaker 4: only played nine games before hanging it up. I can't
- 39:03Speaker 4: really remember any good Brizzy stories. Do you have any
- 39:05Speaker 4: that you remember from that?
- 39:07Speaker 2: He's just comic relief at all times.
- 39:09Speaker 5: I don't know if he was joking or serious, but
- 39:12Speaker 5: everything that came out of his mouth, he'd just be
- 39:15Speaker 5: almost a head shaker. But when you bring up Bruce Woodrow,
- 39:20Speaker 5: Bruce was also, I love Bruce as a coach. One,
- 39:23Speaker 5: he'd played me the most. So that's usually your favorite coach, right?
- 39:27Speaker 5: But I have a story about him. One of my
- 39:30Speaker 5: first meetings with him, he calls me in the room
- 39:33Speaker 5: and I'm sitting there and he's like starts coughing he's
- 39:36Speaker 5: like get the f out of here i'm like what
- 39:40Speaker 5: like looking around what are you talking was like i
- 39:41Speaker 5: just just got a little popcorn stuck in my throat
- 39:44Speaker 5: like he was always just crushed crushing popcorn like Like,
- 39:50Speaker 5: I'm like, this is my first meeting.
- 39:51Speaker 2: He's like, sit down, sit down.
- 39:52Speaker 4: I'm like, all right, Bruce.
- 39:53Speaker 5: But he's, that and him taking baths is one he
- 39:57Speaker 5: tried to forget, but.
- 39:58Speaker 2: He'd always be talking about.
- 40:02Speaker 4: I forgot about that.
- 40:03Speaker 2: That's right.
- 40:04Speaker 4: That's right.
- 40:05Speaker 3: He'd tell you in a meeting, I got to take
- 40:08Speaker 3: a bath?
- 40:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 40:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:10Speaker 5: I think he, the one time he blamed it on
- 40:13Speaker 5: a salad.
- 40:14Speaker 2: He's like, I'm perp and fart and like that. Man,
- 40:17Speaker 2: I got to go take a bath. We're just like Bruce.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Come on, buddy. Come on. I love Bruce, man. He's awesome.
- 40:25Speaker 3: He's honestly the best. And we had Patty Maroon on.
- 40:28Speaker 3: And you played with Patty, too. And Patty was just
- 40:32Speaker 3: telling us about his pregame meal, what he would make
- 40:35Speaker 3: out of a buffet line.
- 40:37Speaker 2: It's amazing, man. It was awesome.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Like, what is it?
- 40:41Speaker 3: Like, he kind of, it's like he gave us a
- 40:43Speaker 3: little bit, but it's, we keep, every time we get
- 40:45Speaker 3: somebody on, we ask him, like, do you remember it?
- 40:47Speaker 3: Everybody makes the same face.
- 40:48Speaker 5: Like, I was, they were always on me about, like,
- 40:52Speaker 5: I'd be riding bikes after games for an hour because
- 40:55Speaker 5: they want me to lose body fat. So whatever, like,
- 40:58Speaker 5: I was seeing Bruce get, I, like, I'd have to
- 41:00Speaker 5: stay away in the line pretty much.
- 41:02Speaker 2: I'm going the other way.
- 41:04Speaker 4: I remember.
- 41:04Speaker 2: It would just be, it would be a mount. Like,
- 41:08Speaker 2: it was just impressive.
- 41:10Speaker 4: You know, he put steak, steak on the bottom, and
- 41:14Speaker 4: then pasta, like pasta bolognese.
- 41:16Speaker 2: On top of that. I didn't even know there was
- 41:18Speaker 2: a steak under that.
- 41:19Speaker 4: Yeah, he doubled up.
- 41:20Speaker 3: There's a hunk of beef under that?
- 41:22Speaker 4: On top of it.
- 41:22Speaker 2: There's a hunk of beef.
- 41:24Speaker 4: And then he would have, the best part is Bruce,
- 41:26Speaker 4: like I give Bruce a ton of respect because he
- 41:29Speaker 4: leans into it. He wears it. He wears it. And
- 41:33Speaker 4: he put, he'd literally wear it. He literally put his,
- 41:36Speaker 4: he put like a napkin in his, Always.
- 41:39Speaker 2: Always tucked in the shirt. Proper. Ready for battle.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Maybe two napkins just to cover his shirt because he'd
- 41:47Speaker 4: spill it everywhere.
- 41:48Speaker 2: But beauty.
- 41:50Speaker 4: Love Brucey.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Yeah. I love Bruce.
- 41:52Speaker 3: He's the best, man. Honestly, one of the best. But,
- 41:55Speaker 3: you know, you played with some, I mean, you played
- 41:57Speaker 3: with some great teams, man. And your 2015 team in Boston,
- 42:01Speaker 3: when you signed that nice ticket, I mean, what was
- 42:03Speaker 3: it like walking to that dressing room with, you know, Marchand, Bergeron, Chara, Tukarask,
- 42:08Speaker 3: like Krejci, what was your initial impressions of being there
- 42:13Speaker 3: on that team?
- 42:15Speaker 5: It was, well, free agency alone is a whirlwind. You
- 42:21Speaker 5: talk to teams. Do you have a lot of offers?
- 42:25Speaker 5: On the day, no, not that many. Boston was the
- 42:28Speaker 5: biggest one to start, and I'm like, all right, let's go.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Let's get this over with. I've been sitting here for
- 42:32Speaker 2: four hours. This is ridiculous. Before that, we talked to everyone.
- 42:36Speaker 2: The day before....
- 42:39Speaker 5: Two days before free agency, I went to Montreal. They
- 42:43Speaker 5: flew me and my wife down there and showed me
- 42:44Speaker 5: around town, the rank, all this, and.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Then didn't offer on free agency. So you're like, it's crazy.
- 42:50Speaker 5: The whirlwind, but getting into Boston was, you know, seeing
- 42:53Speaker 5: big Z like that guy's another whole, another piece of work,
- 42:57Speaker 5: like talk about leader and working out. Now I think
- 43:01Speaker 5: he runs marathons now or triathlons.
- 43:03Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what that guy's up
- 43:05Speaker 2: to now, but. Him and Bergie were great.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Marci and I had our pass. He actually injured me
- 43:12Speaker 5: in Team Canada tryouts, so I've been looking to get
- 43:15Speaker 5: to know him for a while.
- 43:16Speaker 2: But, no, he was great too.
- 43:19Speaker 5: So, yeah, it was awesome.
- 43:22Speaker 3: Your free agency thing, same thing with my year of
- 43:26Speaker 3: free agency. Everybody was like, dude, everybody's going to be
- 43:29Speaker 3: calling you. You're going to have offers. You're going to
- 43:30Speaker 3: have 30 offers. You're going to fucking, it's going to
- 43:32Speaker 3: be incredible. I got brought to Edmonton, and then it
- 43:35Speaker 3: was like, like that night i didn't have a phone
- 43:39Speaker 3: call and i was like oh god and then florida
- 43:42Speaker 3: offered me a big deal because they like called they're
- 43:45Speaker 3: like all right why are you still like available and
- 43:47Speaker 3: i was like oh you know we got some offers
- 43:49Speaker 3: and yeah and people were like dude how great was
- 43:51Speaker 3: i was like are you fucking kidding me i was
- 43:53Speaker 3: like i was sitting there like i'm not gonna get
- 43:55Speaker 3: a contract yeah you're.
- 43:57Speaker 4: Not a If you're not a superstar, it's not the
- 44:01Speaker 4: same process. It's not glamorous at all.
- 44:05Speaker 1: They build it up that way, though.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Yeah, they do.
- 44:08Speaker 5: You think it's going to be like confetti flying. No,
- 44:12Speaker 5: it's four hours of sitting there shaking, hoping someone signs you.
- 44:16Speaker 5: But they did, and it worked out pretty good.
- 44:20Speaker 4: It did. I remember that process, Matty. When you were
- 44:24Speaker 4: going through it, we were talking. I remember it because... Selfishly,
- 44:27Speaker 4: I wanted you to stay in Anaheim because we probably
- 44:32Speaker 4: should have won a cup that year, lose to Chicago.
- 44:35Speaker 4: But when you get to Boston, obviously completely different than
- 44:39Speaker 4: playing in Anaheim, but playing in an original six, what
- 44:43Speaker 4: was it like with the fans, the media, the pressure?
- 44:47Speaker 4: How was that to navigate? It was.
- 44:51Speaker 5: like looking back on it now, this is always something like,
- 44:54Speaker 5: I didn't really think I noticed pressure all that much
- 44:57Speaker 5: when I was playing. Like you're kind of just flying, right?
- 45:00Speaker 5: You're flying by the seat of your pants going through it. Yeah,
- 45:02Speaker 5: there was, there was some pressures definitely towards the end.
- 45:06Speaker 5: Like when I first got there though, me and Jimmy
- 45:09Speaker 5: Hayes actually signed on the same day and what a
- 45:13Speaker 5: treat that was because like his family took me in
- 45:16Speaker 5: like family.
- 45:16Speaker 2: We'd spend Christmas there. Thanksgiving we'd go. his house like
- 45:21Speaker 2: everyone around town.
- 45:22Speaker 5: If you're with jimmy you were in right so um
- 45:26Speaker 5: that was awesome that was that was great to to
- 45:28Speaker 5: be able to get to know the family and and
- 45:31Speaker 5: to be with jimmy during that time was a lot
- 45:33Speaker 5: of fun but uh you know the fans the fans
- 45:36Speaker 5: are great they they loved you they can hate you
- 45:40Speaker 5: but the passion is is 100 right so that's that's
- 45:43Speaker 5: what you asked for.
- 45:44Speaker 3: As a player Uh, you just mentioned mental health and you,
- 45:47Speaker 3: you know, you talk about Jimmy Hayes, but also you're
- 45:50Speaker 3: a big advocate for men's mental health and, and where
- 45:53Speaker 3: did that start in Boston or was it kind of something,
- 45:55Speaker 3: a culmination? Cause you said you didn't really recognize pressure
- 45:58Speaker 3: until later in your career and like post career, but
- 46:02Speaker 3: what's it like for you? Um, and when did that
- 46:05Speaker 3: kind of advocacy for mental health start?
- 46:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, um, like I said, during my career,
- 46:12Speaker 5: maybe I didn't pick up on, on parts of it. Uh,
- 46:16Speaker 5: Everything from like substance stuff, I've had issues with that,
- 46:19Speaker 5: which now I'm living a similar life to Nate and
- 46:23Speaker 5: it does definitely help. But I think dealing with pressure
- 46:28Speaker 5: as a young kid, I left home when I was,
- 46:30Speaker 5: I played when I was 14 away from home. So,
- 46:33Speaker 5: you know, it's fun and you're kind of living that
- 46:36Speaker 5: lifestyle and everything's going, but you don't really realize, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 5: at one point I had three houses and an apartment
- 46:42Speaker 5: and a kid, my daughter and wife from one city,
- 46:45Speaker 5: you're driving, you're waking up for like, it's going to
- 46:48Speaker 5: wear on you and you don't know what the next
- 46:50Speaker 5: day looks like. So I've actually, I've kind of started
- 46:53Speaker 5: trying to mentor players. And I think that's a big
- 46:55Speaker 5: space in hockey where young guys need someone to talk to.
- 46:59Speaker 5: Just be like, Hey, this might be, you might not
- 47:01Speaker 5: be noticing it, but you got to think about this.
- 47:04Speaker 5: And like, how are you feeling about this? Or when
- 47:06Speaker 5: something happens, you walk in the office, you walk out
- 47:08Speaker 5: of a coach's meeting. You don't usually even remember what
- 47:11Speaker 5: they told you. Like, The first thing they say, you're
- 47:15Speaker 5: kind of veering the headlights, right? And you come out
- 47:17Speaker 5: and then it'd be nice to have someone to kind
- 47:20Speaker 5: of recap it after and be able to bridge that gap.
- 47:23Speaker 5: I think that would help guys, one, perform and just
- 47:26Speaker 5: be able to deal with what's going on better.
- 47:30Speaker 4: You're right, Matty. When I look back, and I think
- 47:32Speaker 4: you said it best, we do kind of fly by
- 47:35Speaker 4: the seat of our pants in our career and there's
- 47:37Speaker 4: a lot of blurred moments where you're you wish you
- 47:42Speaker 4: look back and you wish, okay, I wish I would
- 47:43Speaker 4: have slowed down a little bit, like in those certain
- 47:45Speaker 4: situations or had, you know, had a conversation about it,
- 47:49Speaker 4: you know, rather than just moving on right away.
- 47:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:53Speaker 3: It's, it's exactly that. Like, you know, I, I dealt
- 47:57Speaker 3: with that, you know, pressure. I didn't understand until I
- 48:00Speaker 3: retired of how stressed I was and how I had
- 48:03Speaker 3: all these awful habits of, you know, insomnia and, and,
- 48:08Speaker 3: and substance abuse and, you know, you just kind of,
- 48:12Speaker 3: you get older in the league and you kind of
- 48:14Speaker 3: maybe slow down a little bit, but like, it's just
- 48:17Speaker 3: more cause like, Oh, my body can't handle it to
- 48:20Speaker 3: do it. Like I need to kind of, but like
- 48:21Speaker 3: when you finish, you're like, Holy shit. Like you are
- 48:25Speaker 3: just in a whirlwind. And like the one thing guys
- 48:28Speaker 3: always say is, you know, you blink and it's over.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 48:31Speaker 3: So it's like your career spans such a long time, Matt, but,
- 48:36Speaker 3: you probably look back and you're like, fuck, it felt
- 48:38Speaker 3: like yesterday. It felt like yesterday for me. But then
- 48:40Speaker 3: you're like, holy shit, all the maybe missteps or landmines
- 48:44Speaker 3: I ran into, I wish I had somebody to be like, hey,
- 48:46Speaker 3: just tug me to the right or just help me
- 48:49Speaker 3: process it in the moment.
- 48:52Speaker 5: And when you're in the moment, you actually aren't looking
- 48:54Speaker 5: for that, I think. Like when you get sent down
- 48:57Speaker 5: and you have this meeting, you're like, you're not thinking,
- 49:00Speaker 5: I wish someone and I could go talk to someone
- 49:02Speaker 5: about that. You're just usually getting on a bus or
- 49:06Speaker 5: plane or driving wherever you're going or whatever it is.
- 49:08Speaker 5: But if you had someone that, you know, reaches out like, hey,
- 49:12Speaker 5: this happened.
- 49:12Speaker 2: How are you feeling about it? You know, this is
- 49:15Speaker 2: what they actually want.
- 49:16Speaker 5: Like if you worked with a coach and this is
- 49:18Speaker 5: what the coach really wants to see and this is
- 49:20Speaker 5: how I think you do it.
- 49:22Speaker 2: I think that's, I think it's a huge spot. for
- 49:25Speaker 2: players to help develop.
- 49:27Speaker 3: It's missing.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:29Speaker 3: That's missing. I worked with a couple of guys in
- 49:31Speaker 3: the league and it's like, they'll come out of a
- 49:35Speaker 3: meeting and be like, the coach told me like, I
- 49:36Speaker 3: need to play more simple. And then I'm like, yeah,
- 49:39Speaker 3: but like, don't take it so literal. Cause then he's,
- 49:43Speaker 3: he'll go out on the ice and then it's like,
- 49:44Speaker 3: it's like the, he's literally not even looking for a play.
- 49:47Speaker 3: I'm like, they're not telling you that they're dealing with
- 49:49Speaker 3: 25 other guys. They're trying to just tell you like, Hey,
- 49:52Speaker 3: like tone it down. You can't take it as like, Oh,
- 49:55Speaker 3: I suck and I'm awful.
- 49:56Speaker 2: And I can't dump it in and get off.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:59Speaker 3: It's like if the plays are make it, but it's
- 50:01Speaker 3: to your point, it's like guys don't realize that they're
- 50:03Speaker 3: just like, you walk out of the meeting and the
- 50:04Speaker 3: only thing you took out of it was like, I suck.
- 50:07Speaker 3: I need to be simple.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Exactly, yeah.
- 50:10Speaker 3: No, I agree with you completely. Sorry, Nick, go ahead.
- 50:13Speaker 4: No, no, no. I mean, it's amazing that you're doing
- 50:15Speaker 4: that because it's, I mean, I just think about how much,
- 50:20Speaker 4: it's almost like how much of a better hockey player
- 50:22Speaker 4: you'd be, you know what I mean, within certain situations,
- 50:25Speaker 4: knowing how to navigate just something a coach tells you
- 50:28Speaker 4: where you, you know, I can think of the same thing.
- 50:31Speaker 4: How many times a coach told me something and I
- 50:33Speaker 4: just took it the wrong way and went off the
- 50:37Speaker 4: deep end with it, you know, where you're just lost
- 50:40Speaker 4: after that.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and they might not have even said that.
- 50:43Speaker 4: Yeah, they did.
- 50:44Speaker 3: They're like, what the fuck are you doing?
- 50:46Speaker 1: And you're like, I don't know. You told me.
- 50:48Speaker 2: You told me this.
- 50:49Speaker 4: Exactly, exactly, exactly.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Back ass.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:53Speaker 3: Before we let you go, we've got to ask, you know,
- 50:56Speaker 3: what's going on back there behind you? We heard you're
- 50:59Speaker 3: a collector. You've got to give the fans, you know,
- 51:02Speaker 3: a little bit of explanation of, those crates of drinks
- 51:06Speaker 3: or whatever you got going on back there what's that garage.
- 51:09Speaker 5: It looks like there's a thunderstorm rolling in right now
- 51:12Speaker 5: it's getting a little loud in here but uh yeah
- 51:14Speaker 5: so drink kilo is a new beverage company i'm actually
- 51:17Speaker 5: heading sales for them um we're a zero sugar no
- 51:21Speaker 5: additives no dyes no sucralose um kind of a new
- 51:25Speaker 5: lane of energy drink that uh another spot i think
- 51:28Speaker 5: is open for for athletes where it's something that's healthy
- 51:32Speaker 5: for you.
- 51:33Speaker 2: You can drink, you're not jittery.
- 51:35Speaker 5: And then hopefully going into that, we have a hydration
- 51:38Speaker 5: line for kids because if you have kids, you see
- 51:41Speaker 5: them drink Gatorade or all this stuff, it.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Sends them through a bit of a whirlwind.
- 51:46Speaker 5: And I think that's something that'll be good going forward
- 51:49Speaker 5: for us.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 51:53Speaker 3: Give us the collector thing over your right shoulder. What's that?
- 51:56Speaker 5: I've got a couple Harleys, a four-wheeler. When I was playing,
- 52:01Speaker 5: I'd just sit there on the bus and think of
- 52:03Speaker 5: all the stuff I wanted to do when I was done.
- 52:04Speaker 5: Now I'm trying to do it all.
- 52:08Speaker 2: The only thing is now I've got to learn to
- 52:09Speaker 2: work on them.
- 52:10Speaker 5: I'm a I'm a decently poor mechanic at this point,
- 52:13Speaker 5: but I'm getting there.
- 52:14Speaker 3: I mean, nonetheless, you're able to do some sprocket shit, right?
- 52:20Speaker 4: Sprocket.
- 52:21Speaker 2: Some sprocket shit, yeah. Definitely.
- 52:24Speaker 4: He likes his toys. He likes his toys.
- 52:25Speaker 2: I love it. Yeah, I always have. Always have, man.
- 52:29Speaker 3: Well, Matt, thanks so much, man. We appreciate it. Drink Kilo.
- 52:33Speaker 3: I mean, that's all. We're going to be on the
- 52:34Speaker 3: lookout for that.
- 52:35Speaker 5: We're available online now as of this week, so go
- 52:38Speaker 5: check it out.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 52:40Speaker 3: Send us some, and we'll all post it out, try
- 52:42Speaker 3: it out. I need an energy drink to deal with
- 52:45Speaker 3: these guys in the morning. But thanks a lot. Good
- 52:48Speaker 3: luck with everything, man, and love what you're doing.
- 52:51Speaker 2: All right, guys. Thanks a lot for having me. Take care.
- 52:54Speaker 4: Thanks, Matty.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Thanks once again to Matt Valesky. He was fantastic. Cinephile
- 53:06Speaker 1: in 60. I remember reading The Long Walk, which is
- 53:08Speaker 1: a book by Richard Bachman, which is Stephen King's pen
- 53:11Speaker 1: name way back in the day. And the premise, if
- 53:13Speaker 1: you're unaware of it, is this. People have to walk
- 53:15Speaker 1: at a certain pace. Let's call it four miles an hour. Otherwise,
- 53:18Speaker 1: they get shot in the head. Wait, what? That's a
- 53:20Speaker 1: hell of a contest, a hell of an idea for
- 53:21Speaker 1: a book. It was a hell of a read years ago.
- 53:23Speaker 1: and then I heard they made a movie about it
- 53:24Speaker 1: a year ago, so I might as well go watch
- 53:26Speaker 1: it on Max, and it was above average, better than expected,
- 53:28Speaker 1: the great Philip Cooper Hopp and son, Cooper Hopp and J.D.,
- 53:31Speaker 1: my whole thought was, how do you make this interesting
- 53:33Speaker 1: for 112 minutes, but I thought they kept the action going,
- 53:36Speaker 1: my one main thought was this, from a filmmaking perspective,
- 53:38Speaker 1: I'm like, if you're doing a movie called The Long Walk,
- 53:40Speaker 1: in which if you stop walking, you get shot, the
- 53:42Speaker 1: camera has to be moving the whole time, so I
- 53:44Speaker 1: just thought, cinematic, will this be annoying, watching a tracking
- 53:47Speaker 1: shot the entire time, but I actually thought it was
- 53:49Speaker 1: a good job of not making the camera too busy
- 53:51Speaker 1: and lots of different aspects to it, which I want
- 53:53Speaker 1: you both to weigh in on. How long do you
- 53:55Speaker 1: think you could walk? For example, today, 75 and Sonny
- 53:58Speaker 1: got off the plane from Winnipeg. I went for an
- 53:59Speaker 1: hour and a half walk.
- 54:00Speaker 3: I felt great.
- 54:01Speaker 1: But I was good. Hour and a half, I feel great.
- 54:02Speaker 1: A 60-hour walk, I'm getting shot in the head. Also,
- 54:05Speaker 1: how about the scenes when the people are walking? The
- 54:07Speaker 1: guy's going to take a piss. He's like, well, you've
- 54:08Speaker 1: got to keep walking. You don't get bathroom bakes.
- 54:11Speaker 3: No, it's a great movie. The guy has to stop.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Shits him.
- 54:14Speaker 1: One time, the guy shits his pants and then gets
- 54:16Speaker 1: shot in the head. Like, oh, my God. At that point,
- 54:18Speaker 1: can you just shoot me? Can you give me a
- 54:19Speaker 1: way to go out? Just shoot me in the head
- 54:21Speaker 1: before I had to shit my pants. That's my lasting memory.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Your thoughts, J.D., on the walk? the movie and everything
- 54:26Speaker 1: about it.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Uh, I loved it. I love the, I just, I
- 54:30Speaker 3: think that one, the, the co the co-star he's going
- 54:34Speaker 3: to be the black Panther now, right?
- 54:36Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:36Speaker 3: He's great. They announced him.
- 54:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Uh, I, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I,
- 54:41Speaker 3: I thought it's an interesting premise to your point. And,
- 54:44Speaker 3: and you kind of, you go into the movie being like, Oh,
- 54:46Speaker 3: this would be easy.
- 54:47Speaker 2: What?
- 54:47Speaker 3: Just a brisk walk and whatever. And then you're like,
- 54:49Speaker 3: Oh wait.
- 54:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Like it's, you got to like sleep standing up. Like these,
- 54:54Speaker 3: these guys aren't sleeping or they're, they're like walking and
- 54:57Speaker 3: dozing off and you're just, you know, your feet are
- 54:59Speaker 3: blistered and you're like, it's, it actually halfway through the movie,
- 55:03Speaker 3: I was starting to get like sick to my stomach
- 55:05Speaker 3: just because of like the fear of like, you're like,
- 55:10Speaker 3: once you start feeling like, cause everybody's confident at the start, right.
- 55:13Speaker 2: In the movie.
- 55:14Speaker 3: And then you realize how quickly confidence can get stripped away.
- 55:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 55:18Speaker 3: And like, as soon as like a kid would like
- 55:19Speaker 3: roll his ankle, then all of a sudden the fear
- 55:22Speaker 3: of like dying. And then these, they're all kids.
- 55:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 55:25Speaker 3: So it's like, I was starting to get like, oh,
- 55:27Speaker 3: I was like getting nauseous near the end. Like, oh
- 55:28Speaker 3: my God. But it was a good movie.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Nate, you're in as good a shape as anybody. How
- 55:33Speaker 1: long could you walk before you need to take a break?
- 55:35Speaker 3: Five hours?
- 55:36Speaker 1: Eight hours? Yeah, eight hours of Nate Thompson walking. Fuck this.
- 55:40Speaker 3: How far could you bum scoot? How far could you
- 55:43Speaker 3: bum scoot?
- 55:44Speaker 4: There's no way. There's no way. I was just on
- 55:47Speaker 4: the treadmill today. I was doing incline. I was like. 3.2.
- 55:51Speaker 4: There's no way.
- 55:52Speaker 2: There's no way.
- 55:54Speaker 3: So that's what the walk is. I think it's 3.5
- 55:55Speaker 3: they have to stay. And it's like, you get like
- 55:59Speaker 3: three warnings.
- 56:00Speaker 4: You're cooking. That's a brisk walk.
- 56:04Speaker 2: That's a pace.
- 56:06Speaker 3: You're putting a pace on.
- 56:07Speaker 4: And you gotta basically take a piss and take a
- 56:10Speaker 4: shit while you're doing that.
- 56:11Speaker 1: That was my thing. I mean, if you gotta take
- 56:12Speaker 1: a piss while walking, I'm like, well, we've all kind
- 56:14Speaker 1: of been there. Take a shit while walking, I'm gonna
- 56:16Speaker 1: go and say none of.
- 56:17Speaker 4: Us have been there. Wait.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Wait, you pissed while walking?
- 56:20Speaker 1: No, but if you're walking, you've got to quickly stop
- 56:22Speaker 1: and piss, like 30 seconds, not even, 20 seconds.
- 56:24Speaker 3: Well, you just walk backwards and you piss walking backwards.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Now, that spoke like a guy from Montreal. I mean,
- 56:29Speaker 1: that's a... Tal has definitely seen people in La Belle
- 56:35Speaker 1: Provence doing that exact move.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Rue St.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Catherine, coming to St.
- 56:38Speaker 4: Marie.
- 56:39Speaker 1: I'll just walk backwards and piss.
- 56:40Speaker 2: It's not a big deal.
- 56:41Speaker 1: I'm going to go and go get.
- 56:42Speaker 2: A couple more times.
- 56:43Speaker 6: Did we mention the screenings of the film last year
- 56:45Speaker 6: where the audience had to be on a treadmill at 3.0?
- 56:48Speaker 1: Tell that story.
- 56:49Speaker 4: Yeah, that's great.
- 56:50Speaker 6: There were theaters that had screenings of the walk last
- 56:52Speaker 6: year where you did it on a treadmill at 3
- 56:54Speaker 6: miles an hour, and if you fell off, you were
- 56:57Speaker 6: escorted out of the theater. You couldn't even sit to
- 57:00Speaker 6: watch the rest of the movie. So very curious about
- 57:02Speaker 6: that experience.
- 57:03Speaker 3: You think you can last the whole movie walking at 3?
- 57:09Speaker 1: Yeah, hour 45.
- 57:10Speaker 2: Hour 48, I think.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Yeah, hour 48. But I'd be pissed off. I'd be like,
- 57:12Speaker 1: this isn't an enjoyable experience. Why the hell am I
- 57:14Speaker 1: doing this? I'm never doing this again. I'll review it
- 57:17Speaker 1: next time because I know Nate's going to run. But
- 57:19Speaker 1: Miller Time Football, 40-minute documentary. It's on HBO Max about
- 57:23Speaker 1: when Dennis Miller was a part of Monday Night Football
- 57:25Speaker 1: for a couple of years. I'll give you guys a
- 57:27Speaker 1: week to watch.
- 57:27Speaker 4: It's 40 minutes.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Really good watch about Dennis Miller doing Monday Night Football.
- 57:30Speaker 1: We'll get into that later. All right, players popping, JD.
- 57:33Speaker 1: I'll give you some names. Welcome back, Cotter. Paul Cotter,
- 57:36Speaker 1: four goals, six points in four games. Elias Pettersson, two goals,
- 57:40Speaker 1: six points, one monster open, I said, on Zane Parekh.
- 57:43Speaker 1: That's Tal's Flames. Matthew Nyes, Nyes out.
- 57:47Speaker 3: Flames look awful.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Two goals, four points, two games. I love the Marchenko move.
- 57:51Speaker 1: You and Nate both said, no, no, we love this move.
- 57:53Speaker 4: It's a win-win.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Nyes has been great so far. Cole Perfetti, first line
- 57:56Speaker 1: right now. With the Winnipeg Jets. He's playing with Connor,
- 57:59Speaker 1: playing with Shifley. I love Velarde. Kingston guy. Put him
- 58:01Speaker 1: on the second line.
- 58:02Speaker 4: All good.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Perfetti has finally come to fruition. Tenth overall pick back
- 58:06Speaker 1: in 2020. Jaden Schwartz. Avalanche made no major moves with
- 58:09Speaker 1: the exception of one. They brought in Jaden Schwartz. One goal,
- 58:12Speaker 1: four points, three games. You guys already talked about Bauer.
- 58:14Speaker 1: And J.D., you mentioned, says, Dirk, in one goal, one
- 58:16Speaker 1: assist in four games. Anybody you're particularly impressed with these
- 58:20Speaker 1: players popping?
- 58:22Speaker 3: In this group that you gave me?
- 58:23Speaker 1: Yeah, or I can give you one more story. Evan Bouchard,
- 58:26Speaker 1: six goals, 11 points in four games.
- 58:28Speaker 3: Well, I mean, Bouchard, I mean, just come on. Tickle
- 58:34Speaker 3: the taint. Tickle my taint, why don't you?
- 58:36Speaker 1: He had 95 points. He had 95 points, and he
- 58:38Speaker 1: wasn't a Norris finalist.
- 58:39Speaker 4: So he has to score 100 points?
- 58:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like, one more. Give him the Norris now.
- 58:41Speaker 3: Here's the thing. He has been the best defenseman in
- 58:44Speaker 3: the NHL to start the season.
- 58:46Speaker 2: I love it.
- 58:46Speaker 3: Forget about points. He has been the best defenseman in
- 58:49Speaker 3: the NHL to start the season.
- 58:51Speaker 2: It's Oilers F.U.
- 58:52Speaker 6: Mode.
- 58:53Speaker 3: What's that?
- 58:54Speaker 7: Oilers FU mode. You don't think I'm a top 3D
- 58:57Speaker 7: man in this league? Watch this. I'm going to score
- 58:59Speaker 7: 50 goals this season.
- 59:00Speaker 3: I mean, listen, they're playing some hockey. I like Paul Cotter.
- 59:04Speaker 3: You know, Pettersson, I enjoy. I mean, the Nyes one,
- 59:07Speaker 3: we'll see if he keeps it going. But that, I mean,
- 59:10Speaker 3: Matthew Nyes the start that he had that first game,
- 59:13Speaker 3: I mean, Blue Jackets history, right? So, I like that,
- 59:16Speaker 3: but I mean, yeah, Poppin, I'd say for this segment,
- 59:20Speaker 3: I'm a little confused, but yeah, I'll go with Bouchard.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Yeah, just whoever you're particularly excited about.
- 59:24Speaker 3: Nick, go ahead. Tal confused me again.
- 59:28Speaker 1: I just want to point out, a defenseman who hasn't
- 59:29Speaker 1: lived the NHL in scoring since Bobby Orr in 74-75,
- 59:31Speaker 1: so We'd love to see Evan Bouchard do that. Go ahead.
- 59:34Speaker 3: There's no way it happens.
- 59:36Speaker 1: He's going to outscore McKinnon, McDavid, Kucherov.
- 59:41Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 59:42Speaker 4: I mean, we've got to give him a little bit
- 59:44Speaker 4: of flowers. And I've always been very skeptical of Evan Bouchard,
- 59:48Speaker 4: but he's shutting me up right now. He looks unreal
- 59:51Speaker 4: out there. But for my pick... I'm going to go
- 59:55Speaker 4: Cole Perfetti, I think, just because there's been a lot
- 59:58Speaker 4: of pressure.
- 59:59Speaker 1: You're on the Jets today. I like it.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: You're a heart for the Jets.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: I am.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: I'm going to say him just because there's been a
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: lot of pressure behind him a little bit to start
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: producing and being that next wave of offense that they need,
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: and he's doing that this season. So I'll say good
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: old Cole Perfetti.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: All right, we had promised final predictions, but we're not
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: going to give our veteran trophy winner today since we're
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: already a couple weeks into the season.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: Logan Thompson.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Okay, Logan, thanks very much. We'll keep things going. Beef
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: with Bettman. It's been a while since we've had a
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: little beef with Gary Bettman of the Players Union, but
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: we've got stability. Yeah, unlike Major League Baseball, which has
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: a lockout coming soon, with regards to the NHL, the
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: veteran of 1,132 NHL games said the no-trade and no-movement
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: clauses are being used as originally intended. This is Ron Hainsey.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: which is shared with Pierre Lebrun, and called Bettman's comments
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: an attack on players' CBA-negotiated rights. So, J.D., this is
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: going back to what Bettman said, that basically the no-trade
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: and no-movement clauses are not being used as originally intended.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: And they actually will start monitoring how players use their
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: no-trade clause.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Huh?
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: How can you do that? How can you monitor a
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: guy uses his no-trade clause? I'm a little confused.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: If you're going to monitor the player, then you've got
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: to monitor the GMs that utilize that to or maybe
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: forego giving guys no-move clause. I just think that, listen,
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: it's on the GM more than anything. Stop signing them then.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Stop signing no-move clause. It's an easy fix to come
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: after the players for just taking what's given to them.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: I think I disagree with, respectfully.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: Of course.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: But to me, I just think that it's on the GMs.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: I had said this earlier in the summer. I was like,
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: The pendulum has swung so far in the favor of
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: the players and the power that the GMs are going
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: to find a way to wrestle it back. I mean,
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: they're smart guys. They're there for a reason. They'll find
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: a way. It's the way it works. There's a little
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: bit of give and take. We're kind of winning right
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: now in the sense that the cap's going up. Young
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: guys are getting their money. There's offer sheets. It's a
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: little bit of the Wild West. But if a GM
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: truly believes that they're getting screwed over by the no-move clause,
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: it's very simple. do not sign a guy to a
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: no move clause. And if he doesn't want to take
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: a deal with no move clause, well then fucking trade him.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: So figure it. It's just like one of those things.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: It's like, it is what it is. Sorry.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Players have negotiated it. They fought for it. Nate, I
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: don't understand what the issue is.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: Yeah. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: I agree with JD. I think that this is all
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: on the GMs, all on the GMs. It's simple. And it's,
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: they've created this monster. The league has to, I mean,
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: I mean, this is good though. We've, we've, The league
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: is in a really, really good place. You could say
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: what you want about the trade clauses, but this is also.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Exciting for the league.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: A little drama.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: A little drama. This is adding more attention to the
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: NHL because these guys are getting the rights that they have.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: If they want to change it, then start bullying the players.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: But it's not happening, is it?
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: They'll find a way. Like I could see those going
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: away if it's become, it becomes that big of an issue.
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: Now I do, I do take a, not a, you know,
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: I take, I don't love when players get these deals
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: and they promise that they're going to be on a team.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: And I know life changes and things changes.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: They hold the team hostage.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Like now you're holding the team hostage. Like that's where
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: it's a little bit like Connor Hellebuck situation. Like you
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: wrote a letter to them. to the fans of Winnipeg
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: saying like, we're going to win cups together. Like nice.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: I get it. And then all of a sudden you're like, Nope,
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: not playing now. There could have been other things that happened,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: but make it ended amicably some way because they did
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: pay you at some point. Same thing with Larkin. Um,
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: but Larkin's kind of came and showed up and he's,
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: he's taken it on the chin, but I'm like, don't
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: hold the team hostage. If you're going to do that.
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: It's like, it's so, cause the more you do that,
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: the more you off the, you know, GMs and ownership,
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: and then Gary, they were going to figure out a
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: way to get the power back. So that's where I stand.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Last thought for episode number 101, handing out flowers to
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: the Ducks with their 3-2 overtime win against Florida Sunday night,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: 11th straight home opener, which ties the Bruins and Canadians.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Longest set streak in NHL history. When you win your
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: home opener like that, Nate was on the Ducks in
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: 2016 when the streak started. Let's call it the Nate
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Thompson streak. You were out with a torn Achilles for
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: the record, but beginning of a historic run, Nate, you
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: knew it was coming.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: What a fucking... Way to bury the guy. Way to
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: bury the guy.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: I remember that.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: But the rallying cry was win one for Nate. So
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: that's why they did it. Way to just walk.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Away from that.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: I remember that. I got chirped from Randy Carlisle. It
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: was the first conversation I had with him since being
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: on the Ducks and him being hired. just said to me, hey,
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: came for a paycheck, huh? I just kept walking, and
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: that was it. I was like, nice to see you too, Randy.
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: What a dick.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Randy Carlisle, known for being a dick, though.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Let's be honest.
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: Yeah, well, like you with that comment.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: A little sarcastic.
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: You're known in some circles.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Okay, last thought here, Judy.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: You will send a friendly text, though.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Last thought, Judy. Three episodes left here on NHL Unscripted. Now,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: if I may be honest, we're not sure if we're
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: being renewed. We're still waiting to hear this. Can I
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: make one promise for me? Jillian's coming on, final episode.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: In costume.
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: All right?
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: That's all I ask of you and her.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: Would week three be the week of Halloween?
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Absolutely right. So we're looking at, you know, see how
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: things go. I hope we're here for a long time.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: But we have. 14th, 21st, 28th.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: So two days before Halloween, she comes on. Final episode,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: final guest. That's what I'm talking about.
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: You have to. You have to. That's a must.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: And say, hey, it's got to be a present for Adnet.
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: Is she there right now?
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: He likes Goodfellas.
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: No, she's not.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: I'm in my office.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Tell her, dress up like Karen from Goodfellas. Adnet will
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: be so happy.
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: She's on.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: They're trying to bring us on to the Never Offside podcast.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: Oh, but.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Breaking news. I can never have a
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: side podcast after.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: No, no, but, like, we're going to– Jill's going to
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: go on it.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Oh, so she might be in our competition or whatever
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: it is.
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: Okay, well.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: No, but that's fine. It's not really a competition.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: So we're just a little late to the party. That's
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: the one that's on.
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: It's not a competition.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: We're getting dog walked by him.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: But is that the one that's on the show network,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: just to be clear?
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: Yes, it's on the network. You can catch him on
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: the network and on YouTube.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: And– I just want to point out, Nate's on NHL
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Network today. I've seen you on First Shift. Loving the
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: remote shift, Jason Demers, NHL Network.
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: Not bad, eh?
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: That's the good life right now.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: But naked on the lower half. Just to exude power.
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: The fans at home have no idea.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: BDE.
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: BDE.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: You need to sign a 10-year deal. NHL Tonight, First
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Shift remote. I'll do whatever you guys want.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Sign it right now. No movement clause.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: I would do First Shift.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: I would do First Ship five days a week for
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: 200 an episode.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: For the next 20 years.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: That is just like, it's the best show.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: E.J.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Paddock just teeing you up.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: I was with.
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: Jameson Coyle, so I was with the Expresso boys from Milan.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: I love it.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: All right, this was fun. Thanks for checking out NHL Unscripted.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: We'll see you three more episodes to go. Hopefully a
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: lot longer after that. Until then, check out Jillian's Instagram.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: More fun from Halloween. And we'll keep it rolling here.
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: On the pod.
