Transcript
- 0:00A lesson in control of impulses was described by Homer in The
- 0:04Odyssey. The protagonist, Odysseus, is on
- 0:08his ship trying to return home after the Trojan War.
- 0:13He approaches an area that was home to the Sirens, whose
- 0:16alluring voices would lure sailors to their death.
- 0:20As the ships crashed among the rocks, he wanted to experience
- 0:24the call of the Sirens without succumbing to their force.
- 0:29He had his crew stuff their ears with wax and then had himself
- 0:33tied firmly to the mast so that he could not do anything to
- 0:37steer the ship towards them. He successfully experienced the
- 0:42magnetic force of the Siren's call while saving his ship and
- 0:47crew from destruction. We can learn several things from
- 0:52this. First, that survival sometimes
- 0:55requires the ability to tune out the forces that try to get us to
- 1:00act. Second, even a mental knowledge
- 1:03in advance of the doom awaiting any response is insufficient to
- 1:09prevent an individual from reacting and responding to
- 1:12certain forces, thus necessitating restraints that
- 1:16prevent the response from manifesting.
- 1:20Third, some forces are so powerful that they are
- 1:24difficult, if not virtually impossible, to resist.
- 1:30This tale illustrates the difficulty the seeker faces when
- 1:34he confronts the inducements and enjoyments that the vital nature
- 1:38seeks and tries to control them. The mother advises us that
- 1:44development of the strength to resist these calls is something
- 1:47that can occur, but it takes time and continued effort as one
- 1:53slowly builds up the inner strength of resistance through
- 1:57repeated practice in exercising restraint.
- 2:02The 1st and most important step is to not give in to the impulse
- 2:07one way or the other, similar to the steps Odysseus had to take
- 2:12to successfully resist the lure. The shift to the witness
- 2:17consciousness of the nature is an enormous aid in accomplishing
- 2:21this, as the individual creates some amount of distance between
- 2:25his conscious awareness and the actions of the nature, thus
- 2:30making it somewhat easier to detach oneself from the
- 2:33enjoyments and allures that the vital nature seeks and desires.
- 2:39The mother writes. Quote.
- 2:42It happens only when you have decided, Well, this time I am
- 2:47going to try not to do it and I shall not do it.
- 2:50I shall apply all my strength and I shall not do it.
- 2:55Even if you have just a little success, it is much not a big
- 3:00success, but just a small success, a very partial success.
- 3:06You do not carry out what you yearn to do, but the yearning,
- 3:11the desire, the passion is still there, and that produces worlds
- 3:16within but outside. You resist.
- 3:20I shall not do it, I shall not move.
- 3:24Even if I have to bind myself hand and foot, I shall not do
- 3:29it. It is a partial success, but it
- 3:33is a great victory because due to this, next time you will be
- 3:38able to do a little more. That is to say, instead of
- 3:42holding all the violent passions within yourself, you can begin
- 3:46calming them a little, and you will calm them slowly at first,
- 3:51with difficulty. They will remain long, they will
- 3:55come back, they will trouble you, vex you, produce in you a
- 4:00great disgust, all that. But if you resist well and say
- 4:06no, I shall carry out nothing, whatever the cost, I shall not
- 4:11carry out anything. I will stay like a rock.
- 4:15Then little by little, little by little, that thins out, thins
- 4:21out, and you begin to learn the second attitude.
- 4:26Now I want my consciousness to be above those things.
- 4:30There will steep still be many battles, but if my consciousness
- 4:33stands above that, little by little there will come a time
- 4:38when this will return no longer. And then there is a time when
- 4:44you feel that you are absolutely free, you do not even perceive
- 4:49it, and then that is all. It may take a long time, it may
- 4:55come soon. That depends on the strength of
- 4:58character, on the sincerity of the aspiration.
- 5:02But even for people who have just a little sincerity, if they
- 5:07subject themselves to this process, they succeed.
- 5:11It takes time. They succeed in the first item,
- 5:15in not expressing. All forces upon earth tend
- 5:19towards expressing themselves. These forces come with the
- 5:23object of manifesting themselves, and if you place a
- 5:26barrier and refuse expression, they may try to beat against the
- 5:31barrier for a time, but in the end they will tire themselves
- 5:35out and not being manifested, they will withdraw and leave you
- 5:40quiet. So you must never say I shall
- 5:45first purify my thought, purify my body, purify my vital, and
- 5:51then later I shall purify my action.
- 5:55That is the normal order, but it never succeeds.
- 5:58The effective order is to begin from the outside.
- 6:03The very first thing is that I do not do it, and afterwards I
- 6:08desire it no longer. And next I close my doors
- 6:12completely to all impulses. They no longer exist for me.
- 6:17I am now outside all that. This is the true order, the
- 6:22order that is effective first not to do it, and then you will
- 6:28no longer desire, and after that it will go out of your
- 6:32consciousness completely. End Quote.
