Transcript
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Life is a process of revision.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: For new writers, one of the most surprising elements of the craft is how much editing and revision it takes to produce good work.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Until you get into writing as a serious hobby or a career, it may seem like writing should just come out clean and ready to publish as soon as you do it.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: But experienced writers know this is not the case at all.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Effective writing doesn't happen by accident.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: First, you create a rough draft, then a solid first draft, then a second, third, and final draft.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Now these drafts can vary depending on the project, of course.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: As writers, we spend a lot of time thinking about how to revise and change our writing, but we rarely reflect on how our writing changes us.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: John Irving said, half my life is an act of revision.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: He was talking about the actual act of revision, but there's a deeper truth here.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: The time we spend in editing doesn't just revise our writing, it also revises us.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: As we grow and develop in our craft, we change.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: We grow.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: We become a new and hopefully better version of ourselves.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: This is scary and a little bit intimidating, but it's important to stay open to change.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: If we don't change, neither does our writing.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Like a bottle of fine wine, we should become better and more nuanced as we get older.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I want to take just a second and let you know about our daily writer membership community.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: You know, one of the very best ways to develop better habits and impact more people's lives with your writing is to spend time around other successful writers.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: For years, I searched for the kind of writing community that I would want to join.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Well, I could never find what I wanted, so I created one.
