The DiCecco Daily: Should Eagles Play Nakobe Dean On Dreaded Metlife Stadium Turf? · Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast

Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody? Welcome into this edition of
• 0:12
  Speaker 1: The check Odaily.
• 0:13
Speaker 2: It's Andrew Decheko with a Wednesday edition, which means that
• 0:17
Speaker 2: Thursday night football is on the horizon, and both the
• 0:21
Speaker 2: Eagles and the Giants release their final injury reports of
• 0:25
  Speaker 2: the week.
• 0:26
Speaker 1: We'll start with the Eagles.
• 0:28
Speaker 2: They've ruled out tight end Grant Calkatara with the oblique
• 0:31
Speaker 2: and guard Landon Dickerson with the ankle. Those were expected,
• 0:35
Speaker 2: but defensive tackle Jalen Carter with the heel, and linebacker
• 0:40
Speaker 2: to Kobe Dean are listed as questionable.
• 0:43
  Speaker 1: Now.
• 0:44
Speaker 2: Jalen Carter is a new addition to the injury report,
• 0:48
Speaker 2: and he's been dealing with the shoulder this season and
• 0:52
Speaker 2: now he has the heel that's a new one, and
• 0:55
Speaker 2: he was a limited participant on Wednesday. We'll have to
• 0:59
Speaker 2: wait and see how that all plays out and whether
• 1:02
Speaker 2: or not he's able to go. But it's also even
• 1:04
Speaker 2: if he does, it's something to keep an eye on
• 1:06
Speaker 2: because you can see the shoulder injury sort of plaguing
• 1:10
Speaker 2: his ability in game. Usually you see that ability to
• 1:14
Speaker 2: take over games, and he seems to be laboring through
• 1:17
Speaker 2: that and finding ways to I guess as a workaround
• 1:21
Speaker 2: to compensate for that, and Nacoby Dean listed is questionable.
• 1:27
Speaker 1: The Eagles still have fifty two players.
• 1:28
Speaker 2: Remaining on their fifty three. They had that open spot
• 1:31
Speaker 2: that they carried through last weekend. So it's conceivable that
• 1:35
Speaker 2: Nakobe Dean makes his season debut Thursday night against the
• 1:39
Speaker 2: Giants at MetLife Stadium, and it's certainly leaning that way.
• 1:42
Speaker 2: Vic Vangio left the door open for that and he
• 1:46
Speaker 2: said there's a possibility, but you know, it's hard to
• 1:50
Speaker 2: fathom the Eagles going into another game with fifty two players.
• 1:55
Speaker 2: Now it's just one player, but it seems like they
• 1:58
Speaker 2: were reserving that spot for Nacobyan.
• 2:00
Speaker 1: So the role that I.
• 2:02
Speaker 2: Could expect, or that I kind of envisioned for Nacoby initially,
• 2:06
Speaker 2: I guess would be on special teams where he's a
• 2:09
Speaker 2: good special teams player. He played that in twenty twenty
• 2:13
Speaker 2: two very effectively, and I'm not so sure how much
• 2:17
Speaker 2: he would factor in defensively. That MetLife Stadium turf, we
• 2:21
Speaker 2: should mention is sort of the equalizer in a bad way.
• 2:26
Speaker 1: There's been a lot of gruesome.
• 2:28
Speaker 2: Injuries over the years, sustained by players Malik Neighbors, the
• 2:32
Speaker 2: Giants wide receiver most recently. So having someone returning from
• 2:37
Speaker 2: a pretty significant knee injury and putting him out there
• 2:40
Speaker 2: on that turf is something that I would be concerned about.
• 2:44
Speaker 2: But Nikobe brings so much juice, so much energy and
• 2:48
Speaker 2: leadership to whatever unit he's on. He's a positive, positive figure,
• 2:55
Speaker 2: a locker room pillar, and when you look back to
• 2:58
Speaker 2: last season, my opinion, he was unequivocally the heartbeat of
• 3:02
Speaker 2: that defense. A lot of the mentality and their approach
• 3:07
Speaker 2: stemmed from his mindset and what he envisioned it at
• 3:10
Speaker 2: that defense being so good addition, that will be a
• 3:15
Speaker 2: good addition if he's activated for Thursday night, no Grant
• 3:20
Speaker 2: kaal Katara and last week, I mean he left the
• 3:23
Speaker 2: game with the oblique injury, but they put Kylon Granson
• 3:27
Speaker 2: out there and Kylin grantson. Don't look now, but if
• 3:29
Speaker 2: you look at his stats, he's you can make a
• 3:32
Speaker 2: case for his name appearing on the Pro BOWLBO As
• 3:36
Speaker 2: a special teamer, he leads the Eagles by a wide
• 3:39
Speaker 2: margin in special teams tackles and he's been effective in
• 3:42
Speaker 2: that area. But as an inline blocker, he leaves a
• 3:45
Speaker 2: lot to be desired, so does Grant cal Kata. So
• 3:47
Speaker 2: for me, I'm looking at this and wondering, will we
• 3:51
Speaker 2: see more Cam Latu as.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: More of an inline blocker. He hasn't factored that much
• 3:57
Speaker 1: as a tight end.
• 3:57
  Speaker 2: He's been predominantly a fullback in special team's a By
• 4:00
Speaker 2: the way, he came close to blocking another punt against
• 4:03
Speaker 2: the Broncos if you've caught that, and he almost got
• 4:06
Speaker 2: one against the Chiefs, So he's made quite an impact.
• 4:09
Speaker 2: But I think he can give you even more offensively
• 4:11
Speaker 2: as a blocker. Knowing that you don't have the offensive
• 4:15
Speaker 2: line the level of offensive line play that they had
• 4:17
Speaker 2: last season, you have to find certain ways to spring
• 4:22
Speaker 2: someone like a say Kwon Barkley with your personnel, and
• 4:25
Speaker 2: he would be somebody that can certainly do that.
• 4:27
Speaker 3: Hey, fall is planting season. Did you know that many
• 4:29

Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans. Twenty
• 7:58
  Speaker 3: one and up.
• 8:00
Speaker 2: Land and Dickerson in this game means that seventh year
• 8:02
Speaker 2: veteran Brett Toath will get the start at left guard now.
• 8:07
Speaker 2: Brett Toath I wrote a story about him in the
• 8:09
Speaker 2: summer about what he's brought behind the scenes to the
• 8:13
Speaker 2: Eagles and how he's sort of established that staying power.
• 8:17
Speaker 2: Jeff Stoutland is a big Brett toath fan. He's consistent,
• 8:21
Speaker 2: he knows a lot of he knows every position on
• 8:24
Speaker 2: the line, and he brings sort of a stabilizing presence there.
• 8:28
Speaker 2: And he knows most importantly the fundamentals and the spastcivities
• 8:34
Speaker 2: of Jeff Stoutlin's blocking scheme. So there's a lot of
• 8:37
Speaker 2: trust and confidence that the team has in him. But
• 8:40
Speaker 2: he's going to be getting a start against a vaunted
• 8:42
Speaker 2: Giants defensive line that's headlined by defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence,
• 8:48
Speaker 2: so that could be a matt will be a matchup
• 8:50
Speaker 2: to certainly keep an eye on. The Giants don't have
• 8:53
Speaker 2: a lot on offense, but they have some pieces on
• 8:56
Speaker 2: defense and enough so that if you're not getting you know,
• 9:02
Speaker 2: I guess I don't want to even say Steller, but
• 9:05
Speaker 2: adequate play from your offensive line that could be problematic. Now,
• 9:10
Speaker 2: one thing I will be king in on is seeing
• 9:12
Speaker 2: how the Giants rush Jalen Hurts, because the Denver Broncos
• 9:17
Speaker 2: did this very well, where they rushed almost circular, surrounding
• 9:21
Speaker 2: the quarterback almost like it was a shark in the
• 9:24
Speaker 2: water versus a team like the Cowboys who got very
• 9:28
Speaker 2: north and south linear and left these running lanes open
• 9:31
Speaker 2: for Jalen Hurts. We'll see, but I have the sense
• 9:35
Speaker 2: that this could be a game where Jalen Hurts is
• 9:36
Speaker 2: able to pick up some yards with his legs. So
• 9:39
Speaker 2: that'll be certainly something that the offense would welcome as
• 9:42
Speaker 2: it looks to get going now entering Week six, where
• 9:46
Speaker 2: they still don't really have an identity on that side
• 9:49
Speaker 2: of the ball. Let's also look at the Giants and
• 9:54
Speaker 2: who won't be playing in this game for them, because
• 9:57
Speaker 2: there's a name here in particular that we'll get to
• 9:59
  Speaker 2: in a moment.
• 10:00
  Speaker 1: Not playing.
• 10:01
Speaker 2: They've ruled out three players linebacker Swayze Boseman with an ankle,
• 10:06
Speaker 2: linebacker Demetrius Flannagan fouls with a hamstring, and wide receiver
• 10:09
Speaker 2: Darius Slayton with a hamstring. You may not think of
• 10:13
Speaker 2: Darius Slayton as a game changer or much of an
• 10:17
Speaker 2: omission from the Giants roster going into Thursday night, but
• 10:22
Speaker 2: if you think back over some of the years that
• 10:24
Speaker 2: the Eagles have played the Giants, Darius Slayton's had some
• 10:26
Speaker 2: nice games and when you're an offense that's devoid of talent,
• 10:31
Speaker 2: and I should say high level talent, because every player
• 10:35
Speaker 2: in the NFL is talented, But they don't have Malik Neighbors.
• 10:39
Speaker 1: They don't have a dynamic rushing attack.
• 10:41
Speaker 2: Camp Scatibo is an interesting player from the in the
• 10:44
Speaker 2: sense that he runs the ball like Mike Alstott, where
• 10:47
Speaker 2: he sheds tackles and is really tough to bring down
• 10:49
Speaker 2: and has that personality. And Theo Johnson, the former Penn
• 10:53
Speaker 2: State tight end, has established a rapport with Jackson Dart,
• 10:56
Speaker 2: the rookie quarterback. But they don't have a lot in
• 10:59
Speaker 2: terms of wide receivers that they can get the ball
• 11:02
Speaker 2: to in critical moments like the Denver Broncos did with
• 11:04
Speaker 2: Courtland Sutton. So not having someone who can really stretch
• 11:08
Speaker 2: the field with like like a Darius Slayton Ken. They
• 11:11
Speaker 2: have Wandell Robinson, who I like, and he's more of
• 11:14
Speaker 2: an undersized type of receiver, not necessarily one that's going
• 11:18
Speaker 2: to take over games. And they have Jalen Hyatt as well,
• 11:22
Speaker 2: So I mean they're really light on numbers there and
• 11:26
Speaker 2: that's an area where if the Eagles are able to
• 11:29
Speaker 2: pressure Jackson Dart and I'm expecting Vic Vangaiel to throw
• 11:32
Speaker 2: a lot at this rookie quarterback. They should be able
• 11:35
Speaker 2: to do enough there to throw him off enough, and
• 11:39
Speaker 2: they don't have the playmakers at the receiver position to do.
• 11:44
Speaker 1: A whole lot there.
• 11:45
Speaker 2: But it really underscores the importance of the Eagles trying
• 11:49
Speaker 2: to generate some sort of pressure up front. And that's
• 11:53
Speaker 2: why the questionable designation for Jalen Carter is interesting, and
• 11:59
Speaker 2: that could also impa Vic Fangio maybe being even more
• 12:02
Speaker 2: aggressive defensively to try and rattle a rookie quarterback. This
• 12:06
Speaker 2: feels like a primary get right spot for the Philadelphia Eagles.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: They need it coming off that loss.
• 12:12
Speaker 2: It's a short week and I am expecting the offense
• 12:16
Speaker 2: to start to get rowing a little bit. And for
• 12:18
Speaker 2: the defense, the defense for the past two weeks has
• 12:21
Speaker 2: played north of seventy snaps on that unit, on that
• 12:25
Speaker 2: side of the ball, it's a tough ask. But I
• 12:28
Speaker 2: think this week, both sides of the ball and special
• 12:30
Speaker 2: teams has been pretty good. I would say, you know,
• 12:33
Speaker 2: you get two touchdowns off of that unit, and they're
• 12:36
Speaker 2: really starting to gel. The offense and the defense right now,
• 12:40
Speaker 2: I think are going to be able to compliment each
• 12:41
Speaker 2: other well, and I think a lot of it's going
• 12:43
Speaker 2: to be opponent driven, of course, but this should be
• 12:47
Speaker 2: a spot where we're talking about an Eagles win and
• 12:50
Speaker 2: looking at this offense probably in a different light.
• 12:53
Speaker 1: But for now, this has been to check O Daly.
• 12:56
Speaker 2: I'm Andrew de Checo and I will have a podcast
• 12:58
Speaker 2: for you allowing Eagles Giants on Thursday night.
• 13:02
Speaker 1: Have a good one.
