Latest / Lisa & Russell / Ben O'Shea- Resident Evil - He's Just A Guy With An Eski
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Rate the flick with Ben O'Shea. We're off to the movies.
- 0:08Speaker 1: In a very mixed bag of late. Yeah, something for everybody. Yes.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I tell you what, I was like the Thompson twins
- 0:14Speaker 1: in the cinema last night saying, hold me down to
- 0:16Speaker 1: the person next to me watching Resident Evil. It's pretty scary.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It's pretty scary. Lots of jump scares. So, now, if
- 0:24Speaker 1: people saw Weapons, the horror movie that came out last year,
- 0:28Speaker 1: it really... blew up the box office, and the supporting actress,
- 0:33Speaker 1: Amy Madigan, won the Oscar. I was going to say
- 0:34Speaker 1: that had Oscar nominations. She won an Oscar. She won
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for a horror film,
- 0:40Speaker 1: which tells you that Weapons was a sort of elevated horror.
- 0:43Speaker 1: The sort that you see now from Jordan Peele and
- 0:46Speaker 1: Ari Aster and some of these other sort of new
- 0:48Speaker 1: Hollywood players, these young directors who are really making a
- 0:50Speaker 1: name for themselves. And we saw Back Rooms, Obsession. These
- 0:53Speaker 1: films are doing very well in Hollywood. Things are changing.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Widow's Bay just cleaned up at the Emmys in the
- 0:57Speaker 1: comedy section and it's horror. Exactly. And so the director
- 1:01Speaker 1: of Weapons, Zach Kreger, he was so successful. He was
- 1:04Speaker 1: kind of anointed as, okay, you're the next big thing
- 1:06Speaker 1: in Hollywood. And so when that happens to a young director,
- 1:09Speaker 1: eventually you get given– you know, big studio intellectual property.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So you get one of these franchises. It could be
- 1:16Speaker 1: a Marvel movie. It could be a horror franchise. That's
- 1:19Speaker 1: how it usually goes. And so he got attached to
- 1:22Speaker 1: the Resident Evil franchise, which people who've watched these movies
- 1:26Speaker 1: might go, oh, geez, is that really a good thing?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Because there's been seven previous Resident Evil movies. They have
- 1:31Speaker 1: all been terrible. Starring Mila Jovovich. Yeah. And directed by
- 1:36Speaker 1: Paul W.S. Anderson. Based on an iconic Japanese horror video
- 1:41Speaker 1: game of the same name. They're nothing like the video game.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And the movies are just really unwatchable almost, to be
- 1:47Speaker 1: honest with you. And Zach Greger agrees. He didn't watch
- 1:51Speaker 1: any of them. Can you believe? So he's directing the
- 1:53Speaker 1: eighth film in the franchise, has not watched a single
- 1:56Speaker 1: one of them. That may be wise. It's a good tactic.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I think it's a good tactic. But he's a big
- 2:00Speaker 1: fan of the computer game. And so he's kind of.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He's grabbed one of his actors from Weapons, Austin Abrams,
- 2:08Speaker 1: cast him as this medical courier. So you heard in
- 2:10Speaker 1: that little clip before, he's bringing like a little esky
- 2:13Speaker 1: full of organs into a hospital and he gets sent
- 2:17Speaker 1: on another job to a hospital in sort of up
- 2:19Speaker 1: in the mountains, sort of in the middle of a snowstorm.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Unbeknownst to him, there is a sort of a bioweapon
- 2:27Speaker 1: leak from a laboratory that which is turning people into zombies.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But it's such a slow burn sort of movie where
- 2:35Speaker 1: you don't see, it's not like one of those zombie
- 2:37Speaker 1: movies where there's just like hordes and hordes of zombies everywhere.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It's really just this one bloke versus a couple of
- 2:43Speaker 1: zombies every now and then. And it just ratchets up
- 2:46Speaker 1: the tension and the fear factor. Honestly, as you said, Lisa,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you watched it and you said you thought it was
- 2:52Speaker 1: a comedy. It is funny. At first. I mean, the
- 2:55Speaker 1: trailer does exactly what you just said. It slowly ratchets
- 2:58Speaker 1: up what's happening until you think, oh, okay. Yeah, that's
- 3:01Speaker 1: pretty accurate. But throughout, from start to finish, it's actually
- 3:04Speaker 1: very funny. It's a funny, funny movie. Until it's not. Exactly.
- 3:09Speaker 1: That's where the scare comes. There's jump scares. It lulls
- 3:13Speaker 1: you into a false sense of security. And then bang.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Is it possible for zombies not to be funny? They're
- 3:19Speaker 1: pretty funny creatures. They're pretty funny. They're sort of stumbling around,
- 3:23Speaker 1: bumping into things. And you just sort of knock them
- 3:25Speaker 1: on the head and down they go. But this dude,
- 3:29Speaker 1: who's the lead actor... He's a bumbling buffoon. So he's
- 3:33Speaker 1: not one of those people in a zombie film who
- 3:35Speaker 1: all of a sudden somehow becomes like an action hero
- 3:38Speaker 1: capable of saving the world. This is not the guy
- 3:41Speaker 1: you want to save the world. He is just a real...
- 3:44Speaker 1: Just a guy with an esky. He's a guy... He
- 3:47Speaker 1: carries the esky the whole... I'll tell you what, if
- 3:48Speaker 1: you wanted someone to go down to Dan Murphy's and
- 3:50Speaker 1: come back with a six-pack, he's the guy. Guaranteed. He
- 3:53Speaker 1: didn't let it out of his sight the whole movie.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And so, but it is funny. There's really no one
- 3:57Speaker 1: else in the movie apart from him and the zombies.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But it's, look, it's very enjoyable. This is a really
- 4:03Speaker 1: good film. Okay. Really good. School holidays are coming up.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Is it a school holiday kind of film? Or is
- 4:10Speaker 1: it one more for older kids? If you have kids
- 4:12Speaker 1: that are like 14, 15, 16, they will love it.
- 4:15Speaker 1: This is certainly up their alley. This is up their alley. Yep. Okay.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So how many kidneys in an esky are you giving it?
- 4:23Speaker 1: You're not going to believe this. I'm going to give
- 4:24Speaker 1: it four. Oh. Really? Yeah, this is one of the
- 4:27Speaker 1: most fun films you'll see all year. That is surprising. Okay.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I'm pleasantly surprised. The director. I'm scared. The guy is
- 4:34Speaker 1: likeable in it. And this director is a genius. All right.
- 4:37Speaker 1: There you go. Thanks, Ben. Thank you, Ben. Thanks, guys.
- 4:40Speaker 1: 17 past 8.
