- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Have a great day, everybody.
- 1:02SPEAKER_07: Great intro, Martine.
- 1:04SPEAKER_07: Thank you so much for doing that.
- 1:06SPEAKER_07: Now, what Martine didn't say in the intro is that she just, after leaving that for us, went through some shoulder surgery.
- 1:18SPEAKER_07: I can't say that fast.
- 1:20SPEAKER_07: Uh, a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:21SPEAKER_07: So I hope, we all hope that she's on the road to recovery and be back to training soon.
- 1:27SPEAKER_07: Thanks for the intro, Martine.
- 1:29SPEAKER_07: Hello, my friends.
- 1:30SPEAKER_07: Welcome to episode 251 of the Rise and Run podcast.

- 1:43SPEAKER_07: With John.
- 1:44SPEAKER_07: Hey, how are you doing?
- 1:45SPEAKER_07: And with Alicia.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Hello.
- 1:47SPEAKER_07: Jack, I'm glad to say that Jack finally made it back to Orlando.
- 1:50SPEAKER_07: Jack had an exciting trip returning from Ohio to Orlando.
- 1:56SPEAKER_05: She almost had a sleepover at your house.
- 1:58SPEAKER_07: Almost, yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_07: She had to land here in Tampa because the weather, the thunderstorms were so bad in Orlando.
- 2:04SPEAKER_07: And in fact, I might as well say it right now.
- 2:07SPEAKER_07: If I sound a little bit different, it's because I had to come inside because those thunderstorms came over here.
- 2:13SPEAKER_07: But I think we're okay.
- 2:15SPEAKER_07: Wonderful episode this week, friends.
- 2:19SPEAKER_07: John Hughes, if you don't know who John Hughes is, he is one of the people uh involved in Track Shack.
- 2:28SPEAKER_07: And as you will learn, he is the probably the primary reason that there is a Run Disney.
- 2:36SPEAKER_07: We had a wonderful conversation with John.
- 2:39SPEAKER_07: In fact, he hung with us so long that we're going to break it into two parts.
- 2:43SPEAKER_07: We'll play part one of our interview with John Hughes and the history of Run Disney this week and part two next week.
- 2:51SPEAKER_07: In the Race Report spotlight, our friend Matt was in Rochester, New York running part of the 585 series of races, the eight kilometer run.

- 3:55SPEAKER_05: And you know, I know we're in the throngs of summer.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: It's hot all over the country.
- 4:02SPEAKER_05: But you know what's really important right now in terms of Walt Disney World is making sure that you get your holiday plan squared away.
- 4:10SPEAKER_05: So if you're interested in attending a uh much cooler Mickey's Very Merry Christmas party or hopping over to Hollywood Studios for Jollywood nights, uh, if you are a uh Walt Disney World resort guest, uh you have early access to those tickets now.

- 4:39SPEAKER_05: Uh get in touch with an agent and they can get you set up for all of your party ticket needs.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: And you know, this is you know, now that Ty run Disney into this a little bit, I I was curious if any of you guys are gonna take advantage of apparently there's going to be a Jollywood nights right before Marathon weekend.
- 5:00SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: That they they've now extended it into uh a couple of dates into January.
- 5:05SPEAKER_05: So I'll be interested to see if uh any runners come down super, super early for marathon weekend and uh and take advantage of that.
- 5:12SPEAKER_05: But yeah, so if you do visit magicboundtravel.com.
- 5:17SPEAKER_07: I recommend it.
- 5:17SPEAKER_07: Jollywood nights is fun.
- 5:18SPEAKER_07: Uh Becky and I went, I don't know if it was last year or the year before, but it's it's uh it's a nice activity.
- 5:25SPEAKER_07: I've never been to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas.
- 5:28SPEAKER_07: I probably need to do that.
- 5:30SPEAKER_07: But I'll tell you what I have done that I love that is a Christmas tradition for us is the processional Epcot.
- 5:37SPEAKER_07: Candlelight processional, yes.
- 5:39SPEAKER_07: Oh, that's wonderful.
- 5:40SPEAKER_07: That's that's a wonderful, very moving and it's become part of Christmas for us.
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: So maybe that's how Disney will uh will announce like Christmas in July.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: We'll get all the narrators for candlelight or something like that.
- 5:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah, maybe.
- 5:53SPEAKER_07: Maybe.
- 5:53SPEAKER_07: But a lot of good things going on.
- 5:55SPEAKER_07: So get your reservations.
- 5:56SPEAKER_07: MagicBoundTravel.com is the website.
- 5:59SPEAKER_07: Check them out.
- 6:01SPEAKER_07: Let's look at the training schedule.
- 6:03SPEAKER_07: Training for wine and dine.
- 6:05SPEAKER_07: I said it last week that the next time we got together, we'd be in double digits.
- 6:09SPEAKER_07: And indeed, my friends, 14 weeks, 98 days till expo day for wine and dine race weekend.
- 6:19SPEAKER_07: Training week number four, five miles is your long run.
- 6:23SPEAKER_07: Gosh, I've talked about it many times.
- 6:26SPEAKER_07: I'll talk about it again.
- 6:27SPEAKER_07: I envy those of you who are going to do this for your first time.
- 6:30SPEAKER_07: I remember how excited I was getting ready for that first wine and dine.
- 6:35SPEAKER_07: So we've got that coming up.
- 6:36SPEAKER_07: Then, of course, marathon weekend is now 25 weeks away, or 25 weeks away from 5k day.
- 6:45SPEAKER_07: That's 174 days.
- 6:47SPEAKER_07: We're in training week three.
- 6:49SPEAKER_07: And whether you're doing the marathon or the goofy or dopey challenge right now, this week, you're still building, so your long run is three miles.
- 6:58SPEAKER_07: Looking at other races in the Rise and Run family, Burden Hand is less than two months away, 57 days.
- 7:07SPEAKER_07: Uh, we got some news today.
- 7:09SPEAKER_07: Last year, if you were with us, you know, we had a nice dinner at Shady Maples.
- 7:13SPEAKER_07: Uh well, Greg, so here's the thing.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so here's the thing.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: I made contact with the restaurant over the weekend, and I was like, oh, I'm ahead of the game because I looked at when I submitted the request last year and where there was no issues whatsoever.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: And uh apparently they are booked out for group reservations for the entire day.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: That's remote and flabbergasted for how massive of a restaurant that is.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: So I I've been chatting with Bob and John uh over the past couple of days.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: We are looking into alternatives.
- 7:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, we think we might have found one, but at the same time, if worse comes to worse, we can still go to Shady Maple.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: We just wouldn't be able to do it as a group.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: Everyone would just pay individually and try to sit as close to one another as possible.
- 8:07SPEAKER_05: So the three of us are gonna chat.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: We're gonna make an executive decision on that, hopefully within the next week.
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: And um, hopefully very soon we will have updated information for you.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: But just so you know, there is a chance we might not end up at Shady Maple.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: So I just I I don't want to try to disappoint anybody, so I we just want to be fully transparent with that.
- 8:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'd say it's not looking good, but that doesn't mean we can't find a good place.
- 8:30SPEAKER_07: Central Pennsylvania is the land of the smorgasboard.
- 8:34SPEAKER_07: Yes, it is.
- 8:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah, which the rest of the country has buffets, but there's smorgasboards in central Pennsylvania.
- 8:43SPEAKER_07: We'll find someplace, we'll do something.
- 8:44SPEAKER_07: It's just a great weekend.
- 8:46SPEAKER_07: If nothing else, we have that fabulous uh Saturday afternoon barbecue to look forward to.
- 8:54SPEAKER_07: So that's what's going on with Burden Hand.
- 8:56SPEAKER_07: I registered for the Donna Half Marathon first weekend in February this year.
- 9:03SPEAKER_07: The day was the first day you could register.
- 9:06SPEAKER_07: I have c I did not when I registered, I did not create a rise and run team, but I've been in contact right away with the folks at the Donna weekend, and they assured me that they would make a rise and run team for us.
- 9:19SPEAKER_07: I checked before we started recording.
- 9:20SPEAKER_07: I haven't heard officially for them yet that that's available, but I will follow up on social media and then I'll let you know next week what's going on.
- 9:29SPEAKER_07: Uh, I hope that we do get a team there, and I hope we get big numbers in that.
- 9:34SPEAKER_07: I know that a lot of their teams are fundraisers.
- 9:36SPEAKER_07: I know a lot of you are a little fundraiser weary either from running your own or from uh contributing to others, but this is a wonderful cause that comes up early in February.
- 9:49SPEAKER_07: So we can talk about that a little more after we have the team organized.
- 9:53SPEAKER_07: And since Greg I brought up the topic of fundraisers, do you want to share our news on our fundraisers?
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: So uh I was greatly inspired the other day while I was cutting my grass of uh a fundraising idea to help benefit the hosts here, and that is if you don't know, uh John is running the marathon and marathon weekend on behalf of uh Special Forces.
- 10:21SPEAKER_05: Bob, you are running the Springtime Surprise Challenge on behalf of Multiple Sclerosis.
- 10:27SPEAKER_05: Yes, multiple sclerosis, and then I am running the 10K at springtime on behalf of Give Kids the World.
- 10:35SPEAKER_05: And I was like, you know, what is something that we could do that you know to help equally benefit everyone?
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: And uh we're happy to announce that we are gonna be hosting a rise and run virtual trivia night.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: We we feel like the the the first ever trivia contest that we did on the podcast cruise back in April was such a smashing success, and everyone had a lot of fun with that that we're gonna open it up to the masses.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: We do not have a registration link as of yet, but John and I will be working on that in the next couple of days.
- 11:09SPEAKER_05: But mark your calendars.
- 11:11SPEAKER_05: We are gonna be hosting this on Sunday, August 23rd at 8 p.m.
- 11:18SPEAKER_05: Eastern, and we'll do this whole thing on Zoom.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's gonna be a$10 entry fee uh per person, and all of those uh entry fees are going to go towards and then will be equally split between Bob, John, and I in terms of our various uh charity bibs.
- 11:36SPEAKER_05: We promise we haven't figured it out yet, but there will be fabulous prizes for our winners.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: So if you're interested in getting involved in some rise and run trivia, we look forward to uh seeing you online uh in the end of August.
- 11:50SPEAKER_07: Autograph picture of John sitting behind his drum kit as the growing size.
- 11:54SPEAKER_07: Yes, there you go.
- 11:56SPEAKER_07: It it sounds like fun.
- 11:58SPEAKER_07: So it's a combination of fun and donating to some wonderful charity causes.
- 12:04SPEAKER_07: All right, friends.
- 12:06SPEAKER_07: Training continues.
- 12:07SPEAKER_07: We talk about consistency in training.
- 12:09SPEAKER_07: Let's talk about training updates.
- 12:11SPEAKER_07: What do you got, my friends?
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: A few weeks ago, I had something going on.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I ended up going to the doctor because I had been dizzy for about two weeks.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Um, she thinks that I had either a virus in my ear or just things were kind of off.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: But it has now subsided and I'm back to training.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: But within that time period, I tried to give myself grace.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: I was really frustrated because besides being dizzy, I was like, I want to get out there.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: I'm not injured.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Um, I couldn't do anything.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: And my motto for myself this last week and a half has been don't let life get in the way.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: And this is for me personally.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not necessarily saying this to everybody because I know everybody's life is different.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: But what that meant for me was giving myself ranges on miles.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Um and maybe it meant getting a half hour less of sleep, but still getting in because I knew it was gonna make me feel better.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: So I've been consistently training again, doing my strength training.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and I've been feeling really, really good about things.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: But it is still hot.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: So I gotta be mindful of that.
- 13:18SPEAKER_07: So if it's hot where you are.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:22SPEAKER_07: It's hot everywhere.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: It's hot everywhere.
- 13:24SPEAKER_11: Oh, it's hot everywhere right now, yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_11: Staying consistent with my training.
- 13:28SPEAKER_11: This this is uh this cycle, getting a lot more trying to get I'm still trying to get the two weekly uh runs in and the long run on the weekend.
- 13:36SPEAKER_11: Uh next week might be a little tougher because I will be on vacation, but we'll still try to get those uh shore miles in, which are really fun.
- 13:45SPEAKER_11: Good.
- 13:45SPEAKER_05: Uh just watch out for the tram car, okay?
- 13:48SPEAKER_11: I bet it's it's not out, yeah.
- 13:50SPEAKER_11: It's not out early in the morning.
- 13:52SPEAKER_11: So no, it's not.
- 13:53SPEAKER_07: Boardwalk's a great place to run.
- 13:54SPEAKER_11: It's a great craze.
- 13:55SPEAKER_11: It's it's actually uh you could get a good, I think the m I think the boardwalk's two and a half, three miles long.
- 14:02SPEAKER_11: So you can go get almost six miles on it if you really uh really really do it.
- 14:08SPEAKER_11: But uh I'm going out there training daily.
- 14:12SPEAKER_11: Uh ran Saturday, got a my my long run in because I'm not gonna be able to do it this week because I'll be in a car.
- 14:17SPEAKER_11: Slowed down because of the heat.
- 14:19SPEAKER_11: Came home and tried to cool down and relax, and I think I'm doing good.
- 14:24SPEAKER_11: Miles are feeling good and strong, and uh my pace is getting back a little faster than I, which is good.
- 14:33SPEAKER_07: Consistently building steady.
- 14:36SPEAKER_11: Slow, slow's the way to go.
- 14:38SPEAKER_07: Especially in the season.
- 14:40SPEAKER_11: And that, I mean, you don't real I mean you don't realize how slow running helps you get faster.
- 14:47SPEAKER_11: It's it's it's a very weird yeah thing.
- 14:51SPEAKER_07: Yeah, even among the elites.
- 14:52SPEAKER_07: Uh and it's also fun, and we'll talk about it in the fall.
- 14:56SPEAKER_07: That first couple cool days you go out there and you feel like you're super charged.
- 15:00SPEAKER_07: Or you got that right.
- 15:02SPEAKER_07: But you got that's a little ways off, yeah.
- 15:04SPEAKER_07: Greg, what's new with you?
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: Uh over the weekend, I had 14 on the training schedule, and uh I talked about this when it was either Alicia or or Jack had asked the question about things that we were gonna try that were new to us, you know, in terms of this training cycle and such.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: And I talked about that idea of instead of doing out and back, kind of doing things as quarters and then stopping at my car.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: So I was like, okay, I'm gonna practice what you know I said here on the podcast.
- 15:34SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, the very long trail that is near my house, I drove to like the central point of it.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: And instead of bringing my hydration vest with me, I switched up to my handheld water bottle.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: And then I was like, okay, you know, when I went a quarter of the way and then came back, I can stop at the car, refill, and then and then go on.
- 15:59SPEAKER_05: And in theory, that worked, but at the same time, I also learned something from it as well, too.
- 16:08SPEAKER_05: And that was okay, you know, with the fact that I was doing 14, I'm like, I'm doing three and a half mile segments.
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: And the issue that I ran into is that I was out of liquid by about mile five of doing, you know, seven.
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: So I was like, okay, in theory, this is kind of working, but at the same time, though, now I know if I want to only use my handheld, I can't make these legs longer than a 5k.
- 16:40SPEAKER_05: I need to like, you know, know that I can max out in terms of a mini out and back of five miles.
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: So I got back to my car and the the heat really crept up on me a lot faster than I was expecting.
- 16:53SPEAKER_05: I was proud of myself.
- 16:54SPEAKER_05: I started at eight o'clock in the morning, which I know for a lot of you is really, really late, but for me, that's a win.
- 17:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, because again, I am a night owl through and through.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: So, but when I got to the car, I I wasn't ready to quit.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: But at the same time, and I I feel like this is just gonna become a now phrase that is part of the Rise and Run Lexicon, I didn't want to pull a Tony.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: So what I did is I I stopped.
- 17:23SPEAKER_05: I had I brought myself like a little cooler bag, filled it up with Gatorades and water.
- 17:29SPEAKER_05: I dumped ice on it.
- 17:30SPEAKER_05: You know, I took one of those water bottles of water, I dumped it over my head, poured it on my wrist as well, too, because I know that really does help in terms of uh you know cooling down your body temperature.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: You refilled the handheld with Gatorade, had a small snack, and um, and then I decided, you know what?
- 17:47SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go the other direction for three miles because I was like, I want to get double digits outside.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: Then I called it, went home, changed out my clothes, and then I did the last four on the treadmill.
- 18:01SPEAKER_07: Good.
- 18:02SPEAKER_05: Paces were were solid across the board.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: I was very happy with that.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: In theory, when I looked at the weather conditions, I probably should have slowed down even more than I already did.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: But I just again, I was just feeling too good and I was happy with what I was seeing on my watch, which is why I kind of like let that thought go out the door a little bit.
- 18:22SPEAKER_05: But you know, overall I was really happy.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: But the last thing I just wanted to say too is one of the other things that I did in terms of trying to stay cool for those last three miles is I built up my mental confidence and I took off my shirt and I did those last three miles in a position that you know in the past has made me fit feel uncomfortable.
- 18:45SPEAKER_05: And all that to say that, and I know I've said this on uh on the podcast in the past, that you should love your body and that if this is a way that will keep you cool, gentlemen, take the shirt off.
- 18:59SPEAKER_05: Ladies, if you know, have the confidence to run in that sports bra, love yourself both inside and outside.
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: And again, it just it's another tool to help you, you know, cool down and don't have preconceived notions of what others think about you.
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: Do what is best for you and be confident in your own body.
- 19:16SPEAKER_07: Well, good for you, my friend.
- 19:17SPEAKER_07: I'm glad things are going well.
- 19:18SPEAKER_07: I haven't run without a shirt on in 30 years.
- 19:22SPEAKER_07: I'm probably not going to start.
- 19:23SPEAKER_05: Well, Bob, I'm gonna encourage you to do that if you feel comfortable doing it.
- 19:26SPEAKER_07: I'm probably not gonna start now, but that's okay.
- 19:28SPEAKER_07: I got a couple quick stories.
- 19:30SPEAKER_07: Well, yeah, I don't know.
- 19:31SPEAKER_07: That's an oxymoron with me.
- 19:33SPEAKER_07: Uh went out this morning.
- 19:35SPEAKER_07: It's Florida, it's hot.
- 19:38SPEAKER_07: I the first couple of intervals, my legs felt really tired.
- 19:44SPEAKER_07: And I did the old, let's go a mile, see how it feels.
- 19:49SPEAKER_07: And uh so I got there.
- 19:51SPEAKER_07: Okay, you know that you know that trick.
- 19:53SPEAKER_07: Just say to yourself, I'm just gonna go a mile.
- 19:55SPEAKER_07: And I got there and I kept going.
- 19:58SPEAKER_07: And in fact, I got to the point where I normally turn around on my normal 30 to 45 minute Tuesday, Thursday.
- 20:04SPEAKER_07: And I decided to go an extra quarter mile, which added an extra half mile to my total distance.
- 20:09SPEAKER_07: So, you know, mentally I I use that trick a lot.
- 20:15SPEAKER_07: I say to myself, I'm just gonna see if I can get one mile or ten minutes, and if I need to, I'll turn around.
- 20:20SPEAKER_07: But it usually ends up working out right.
- 20:23SPEAKER_07: Now, this weekend, and this is classic, I shared with you that I'm a little behind where I need to be in training.
- 20:33SPEAKER_07: And by the way, some friends have asked online, they go, uh, we say that the long run this weekend is four miles, and then we talk about running six or eight or something.
- 20:43SPEAKER_07: We're on different schedules.
- 20:44SPEAKER_07: We have customized training schedules, we have different races, and so we have four people, different people giving us different schedules.
- 20:50SPEAKER_07: The number that we give you is off of the Jeff Galloway plan that's in the Run Disney website.
- 20:59SPEAKER_07: So I'm trying to creep up to ten miles, and my plan was to drive to this area that has a lovely six-mile out and back with a loop at one end.
- 21:11SPEAKER_07: So you go out, two three, you turn around, you come back.
- 21:14SPEAKER_07: And I park my car there.
- 21:17SPEAKER_07: It's and that place is two and a half miles from the house.
- 21:23SPEAKER_07: And I figured, okay, if I get this six in, if I feel good, I can add another mile each way and make eight.
- 21:30SPEAKER_07: But as I'm heading out, I get to about a mile, mile and a half.
- 21:34SPEAKER_07: I'm listening to a podcast on my shocks, and it stops.
- 21:38SPEAKER_07: Which happens sometimes.
- 21:41SPEAKER_07: Maybe something else is coming in over your phone.
- 21:43SPEAKER_07: I waited for my next walk break and I got my phone out, and it was dead.
- 21:49SPEAKER_07: My phone battery was at zero, it was dead.
- 21:53SPEAKER_07: Now the problem with this is my phone is the key to my car now.
- 21:58SPEAKER_07: I have an electric car.
- 22:00SPEAKER_07: And that's the key.
- 22:01SPEAKER_07: Now, there is a backup.
- 22:03SPEAKER_07: It looks like a credit card.
- 22:05SPEAKER_07: And I had it with me securely locked in my car.
- 22:11unknown: Oh no.
- 22:13SPEAKER_07: So uh uh uh now I'm at a crossroads.
- 22:17SPEAKER_07: You know how it is with a mobile phone.
- 22:19SPEAKER_07: When the battery dies and it shuts off, sometimes you can get it to restart.
- 22:23SPEAKER_07: Sometimes there's a percent in there or so.
- 22:26SPEAKER_07: And I thought, all right, I got two options.
- 22:28SPEAKER_07: I can finish the six miles, get back to the car, and see if I can start it.
- 22:32SPEAKER_07: But if I can't, now I've done six miles and I'm two and a half miles from the house.
- 22:37SPEAKER_07: That means I got to go back two and a half miles to the house.
- 22:39SPEAKER_07: That's eight and a half, and then I got to get back to the car.
- 22:42SPEAKER_07: So I'm looking at 11.
- 22:44SPEAKER_07: Or on this loop at the end of the trail, there's an exit back to the main road.
- 22:52SPEAKER_07: If I take it and come back to my house, I'll get back to my house at about five miles.
- 22:58SPEAKER_07: So I opted to do that.
- 23:01SPEAKER_07: I got Becky's phone because she also has access to the vehicle.
- 23:07SPEAKER_07: And I walked back to where the car was.
- 23:10SPEAKER_07: It worked out.
- 23:11SPEAKER_07: I got there, the car started.
- 23:12SPEAKER_07: And I walked at a pretty I haven't tried walking at a decent pace for a while.
- 23:15SPEAKER_07: Uh my buddy Troy has uh uh motivated me to give it a shot.
- 23:22SPEAKER_07: Walking at a good pace takes practice, and I'm okay.
- 23:27SPEAKER_07: I'm in I got down into the high 13s, but uh to get lower than that, it it takes practice, cadence drills and things.
- 23:35SPEAKER_07: So however, what did I end up with?
- 23:37SPEAKER_07: I ended up with a little over seven miles, and I and that's because I couldn't find my keys.
- 23:43SPEAKER_07: Oh, and and as the topper to all this, I lost my wedding ring.
- 23:48SPEAKER_07: What?
- 23:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I lost it on the course.
- 23:50SPEAKER_07: I what happens is I know that my fingers are going to swell.
- 23:55SPEAKER_07: So and I I never remember to take it off early.
- 24:00SPEAKER_07: So I take it off in the first half mile or so and I put it in my pocket.
- 24:05SPEAKER_07: And when I went into I'm sure that what happened when I pulled out uh my run gum, I'm sure my ring came with it.
- 24:12SPEAKER_07: And 49 years I had that ring.
- 24:16SPEAKER_07: It's gone now.
- 24:17SPEAKER_07: Oh gosh, I'm sorry.
- 24:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 24:18SPEAKER_07: I I it's I'm sad about it.
- 24:20SPEAKER_07: It's you know, Becky hasn't left me because the ring is gone or anything like that.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: But I'm I'm sad about it because that's who knows, maybe it'll run on the trail and it will miraculously be there.
- 24:30SPEAKER_07: I went back and looked.
- 24:31SPEAKER_07: I had an idea where it must have happened, but golly, it's it's it is a trail, it's it's a paved trail through a wooded area.
- 24:40SPEAKER_07: So and it's a ring, so it could roll anywhere.
- 24:43SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 24:44SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 24:45SPEAKER_07: So anyway, those are my training update stories for the week.
- 24:51SPEAKER_07: Uh tune in again next week.
- 24:52SPEAKER_07: Hopefully, the training update stories from me won't be as good.
- 24:56SPEAKER_08: Caution runners, change of topic ahead.
- 25:00SPEAKER_07: Hey, there's no uh no what Alicia do this week, so I just want to take just a minute or two and talk about something totally unrelated to running, totally unrelated to run Disney.
- 25:11SPEAKER_07: And that's how much I've enjoyed watching the World Cup over the last couple of weeks.
- 25:16SPEAKER_07: I I hope you guys have had fun with it too.
- 25:19SPEAKER_07: A couple things that I've really enjoyed.
- 25:21SPEAKER_07: The American team did well.
- 25:22SPEAKER_07: Now, unfortunately, they saved their worst game for last.
- 25:26SPEAKER_07: Not that they would have beaten Belgium anyway, Belgium's the better club, but that was probably their worst game.
- 25:32SPEAKER_07: But I'll tell you, I saw the enthusiasm level for the sport that I've never seen in this country.
- 25:39SPEAKER_07: And you know, I've been involved with soccer slash football for many years.
- 25:45SPEAKER_07: Becky and I went to a local brewery for the last two games that the U.S.
- 25:51SPEAKER_07: played in the knockout rounds.
- 25:52SPEAKER_07: And if you weren't there early, you didn't get a seat.
- 25:55SPEAKER_07: That place was packed, people were excited.
- 25:58SPEAKER_07: The run was a lot of fun.
- 26:01SPEAKER_07: The other thing I've enjoyed is because we have friends who listen from all over the world.
- 26:08SPEAKER_07: I've been texting, I looked down the list of countries where we have had episodes downloaded, and the first 12 countries, I think 10 of them had teams in the World Cup.
- 26:20SPEAKER_07: And it was neat.
- 26:21SPEAKER_07: So I know our friends are out there enjoying this.
- 26:24SPEAKER_07: I watched today, we don't have many friends, we don't have many downloads from France or Spain.
- 26:31SPEAKER_07: So I watched that game today.
- 26:33SPEAKER_07: But tomorrow's game, England and Argentina.
- 26:36SPEAKER_07: I'm excited for it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_07: And we've got friends in both places.
- 26:40SPEAKER_07: Now, by the time this podcast is out, you will know who won.
- 26:44SPEAKER_07: We haven't obviously the game hasn't been played yet.
- 26:47SPEAKER_07: But it's it's just been fun.
- 26:48SPEAKER_07: And I've also enjoyed watching the reactions of visitors to the United States and what a great time they've had while they've been over here.
- 26:57SPEAKER_07: And I've enjoyed watching the reaction of the cities that hosted games and how much fun they had enjoying the visitors that were here.
- 27:06SPEAKER_07: So I'll be sorry to see it, and uh we'll try again in four years.
- 27:10SPEAKER_07: I'm not sure where the next one is.
- 27:12SPEAKER_07: I know it's already been assigned, but I'm not sure about it.
- 27:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think they announced it, I think it's Spain, Portugal, and and someplace else.
- 27:19SPEAKER_05: But it's another one of those triple nation type situations.
- 27:22SPEAKER_07: Really, yeah.
- 27:23SPEAKER_07: Now that's interesting.
- 27:24SPEAKER_07: Spain, Portugal, of course, I understand that.
- 27:25SPEAKER_07: That makes sense.
- 27:26SPEAKER_07: I don't know what the third nation would be.
- 27:28SPEAKER_11: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
- 27:30SPEAKER_07: Morocco.
- 27:30SPEAKER_07: It could be Morocco.
- 27:31SPEAKER_07: Okay, it is Morocco.
- 27:32SPEAKER_11: And 34 is going to be Saudi Arabia.
- 27:34SPEAKER_11: So I I I kind of knew that France had had their work cut out for them when they kept staying all day on the news.
- 27:41SPEAKER_11: Well, it's kind of great that France is playing on Bastille Day.
- 27:45SPEAKER_11: And it's going to be.
- 27:53SPEAKER_07: I guess.
- 27:54SPEAKER_07: I guess.
- 27:55SPEAKER_07: Well, that Spanish team played a mighty darn well today.
- 27:57SPEAKER_07: Yeah, they did.
- 27:58SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 27:59SPEAKER_07: I just hope that the game tomorrow, which is yesterday, is a good game.
- 28:03SPEAKER_07: Whatever it is, I've been texting with our friends in England and Argentina after their respective matches, and good luck to both of them.
- 28:11SPEAKER_07: I know they can't both win, but good luck to both of them.
- 28:14SPEAKER_08: Caution runners, the topic is about to change right now.
- 28:19SPEAKER_07: Friends, when we talk about the origin of this podcast, we usually leave out an important step.
- 28:25SPEAKER_07: Well, at least up till now, anyway.
- 28:28SPEAKER_07: We haven't considered when we talk about the start of Rise and Run.
- 28:33SPEAKER_07: We haven't considered that if there was no Run Disney, there'd be no Rise and Run family.
- 28:39SPEAKER_07: This week, we're going to remedy that.
- 28:42SPEAKER_07: Our guest, John Hughes, was a prime motivating force behind the creation of the races that we all love so much.
- 28:50SPEAKER_07: He wasn't just the first race director of the Walt Disney World Marathon.
- 28:55SPEAKER_07: He was one of the visionaries who actually convinced Disney that a marathon belonged at Walt Disney World.
- 29:02SPEAKER_07: Through Track Shack in Orlando, he helped design, launch, and grow the event that ultimately became Run Disney.
- 29:10SPEAKER_07: And we are really excited to have him with us tonight.
- 29:14SPEAKER_07: John, welcome to the podcast.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: Oh, thank you.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: Thanks, Pop.
- 29:18SPEAKER_07: It's fun to have you here.
- 29:19SPEAKER_07: We're we're looking forward to the next couple minutes with you.
- 29:23SPEAKER_07: I'm sure we're going to learn some things too.
- 29:26SPEAKER_07: Now, before we get into the Run Disney aspect, let's just talk talk a little bit background about you, John.
- 29:34SPEAKER_07: How did you first discover running?
- 29:36SPEAKER_07: How did you get started as a runner?
- 29:38SPEAKER_06: I always loved sports.
- 29:39SPEAKER_06: Um those uh folks that know me know I am not uh of a basketball, football build by any means.
- 29:48SPEAKER_06: Um I I definitely have a runner's build, which I didn't know though.
- 29:52SPEAKER_06: I I uh you know, kind of like you know how big dogs think that they're really small and so I thought I could play those other sports, but by when I got to high school, you know, reality and the the cruelness of life uh showed me that was not the case.
- 30:08SPEAKER_06: I really wanted to participate though, and uh um I was doing work, actually helping to work out a track meet in high school, and I saw um this man, this young high school runner run the mile, and it was just amazing.
- 30:22SPEAKER_06: And he and he was from our school and he won.
- 30:24SPEAKER_06: And I was so inspired by that.
- 30:26SPEAKER_06: I'm like, oh God, that looks so great.
- 30:27SPEAKER_06: So I decided to run home that night.
- 30:30SPEAKER_06: And unfortunately, on my way home, I was running and I smacked and went down on the ground.
- 30:35SPEAKER_06: Uh, there was this brown pole in the middle of the field, and it was dark, and I ran right into the pole.
- 30:41SPEAKER_06: So uh I thought that was gonna be a very short-lived running career.
- 30:45SPEAKER_06: Um no, I I uh I just did enjoy it, and uh, so very long story, but I'll just make it short.
- 30:52SPEAKER_06: I I ended up uh late that next summer joining the cross-country team at our school, and that is they say the rest is history.
- 30:59SPEAKER_06: Um I started running there, fell in love with it, ran high school, ran college, and um, and then actually running became my career and the industry I got into.
- 31:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 31:10SPEAKER_07: So what point did you realize that that was gonna happen, that it was gonna be more than just a hobby?
- 31:14SPEAKER_06: When I came back from college, um got in my third year, um I had been working at athletic stores, um, one of which was kind of kind of semi-running store for the time we're talking in the mid-70s now.
- 31:30SPEAKER_06: So it was 77, and um three gentlemen had started a uh a store uh called Track Jack, and uh I came into that um in December of 77, shortly after they opened.
- 31:43SPEAKER_06: Anyways, I thought this is great.
- 31:45SPEAKER_06: This is I was going to school for business.
- 31:47SPEAKER_06: I love running, um, and I really truly do love the sport.
- 31:50SPEAKER_06: I mean, and um so I combined the two and became a partner the next year in 78.
- 31:57SPEAKER_06: And uh then uh when my wife Betsy and I got married in '83, we we bought out the partners, and that's a very brief history of how the whole business side started, but that what that's what started Track Shacking from uh the late 70s into 83.
- 32:10SPEAKER_07: One thing I've learned in in doing a little research is that Betsy's been a huge part of all of this, hasn't she?
- 32:15SPEAKER_07: The the Track Shack, the race directing, everything.
- 32:17SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, none of this would have happened without Betsy.
- 32:19SPEAKER_06: Um Betsy and I have been partners all that time, and uh so from everything from the store to the events to Disney, yes.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: John, thank you so much for giving us that backstory.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: But you know, I'm just out of curiosity here.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: What inspired you to join that initial track shack team?
- 32:38SPEAKER_06: Oh, the uh the track with the three gentlemen that started the store?
- 32:42SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 32:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, well, uh oh yeah.
- 32:44SPEAKER_06: So quick background on that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_06: I um I had worked for one of the three, the one that was really the instigator to he got these two partners to go with him.
- 32:51SPEAKER_06: Is and he I had worked with him at a store at the time called Athletic Attic.
- 32:57SPEAKER_06: Um that was the kind of quase running and sports store um out of uh Gainesville.
- 33:04SPEAKER_06: And uh Jimmy Carnes and two other people had started that.
- 33:06SPEAKER_06: It became a quite a actually it became quite a large franchise um throughout the U.S.
- 33:12SPEAKER_06: at one time, particularly Southeast.
- 33:14SPEAKER_06: Anyhow, so when I came back from school, I needed to work some and I started working for my former boss, Dana.
- 33:21SPEAKER_06: Um, and then it was actually um just a strange set of events that I ended up buying his share, his third out, uh, the next year.
- 33:32SPEAKER_06: And uh so that's that's how I got in working with Dana, and then then now I was myself and the the two partners that he brought in as we continue to to do to uh build track track.
- 33:44SPEAKER_07: So now you're you already described to us you're part of the uh I was under the impression you were one of the initial founders, but I know that's not true.
- 33:52SPEAKER_07: You you got in a couple months later.
- 33:54SPEAKER_07: Now you're in the one-third partnership, and then eventually, and you told us this already that you bought it out and you and Betsy ran it.
- 34:01SPEAKER_07: But before Run Disney, you were also into race directing in Central Florida.
- 34:06SPEAKER_07: I mean you were yeah.
- 34:07SPEAKER_07: I mean track tracks.
- 34:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I know for sure.
- 34:09SPEAKER_06: That the store was the first thing, yeah, late, you know, late 77 and then 78.
- 34:15SPEAKER_06: Um, when I became partner, I realized um if anybody knows, in fact, I actually asked AI this, so it's it's you know it's true.
- 34:24SPEAKER_06: So but I was curious because in my mind there were only literally a handful of running stores in the 70s, uh late, you know, mid to late 70s.
- 34:33SPEAKER_06: So I asked AI, and I swear to you, this is the answer I said.
- 34:36SPEAKER_06: It said, there were a handful of running stores in the and I said, Well, that's exactly what I said.
- 34:43SPEAKER_06: So um it was very unusual and not uh easy by any means to try to be opening a running store in the 70s.
- 34:52SPEAKER_06: And so um I and I may say this several times just because it's it's the truth from back then in the 70s, mid-70s when I was running to now, is I I love running so much, I've always wanted to share that.
- 35:06SPEAKER_06: And uh, and that's been a compelling really uh reason for everything I do and Betsy does and and our family and our team is we we love that uh we love to share running for so many reasons.
- 35:19SPEAKER_06: But um anyhow, so I realized though if we were going to exist, we couldn't just open a door and to have people come in.
- 35:27SPEAKER_06: There weren't enough runners and there had to be reasons.
- 35:30SPEAKER_06: So we started putting, I decided we had to put a race on.
- 35:34SPEAKER_06: Um, I told the two partners, here's our marketing plan.
- 35:37SPEAKER_06: We're gonna put some events on and encourage people to run, which we wanted to do anyways, but obviously if they run, then hopefully they'll come to the store and buy things.
- 35:45SPEAKER_06: So the there was no event company then.
- 35:48SPEAKER_06: It was just an outreach of the store to put on events, get people to run, and so forth.
- 35:54SPEAKER_06: So it was fulfilling, and it did start to fulfill those goals, made no money.
- 35:58SPEAKER_06: In fact, if anything, lost money on putting events on.
- 36:01SPEAKER_06: Again, it was just to uh help promote the sport.
- 36:04SPEAKER_06: And that went on for a couple of years.
- 36:06SPEAKER_06: We added more races to it.
- 36:09SPEAKER_06: And then probably about three years into doing that, we I think I finally realized we could break even.
- 36:17SPEAKER_06: And then after that, realized wow, there's actually two businesses here, which we didn't separate for several more years, but realized that uh, you know, there there really was something to putting on the events uh as well as the retail.
- 36:31SPEAKER_07: So some of those races you started in the late 70s in central Florida, they're still going on, aren't they?
- 36:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we're really pleased with that.
- 36:38SPEAKER_06: We have several that are going to be turning 49.50 uh this year.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: Track Shack turns the store, turns 50 um a year from this August.
- 36:48SPEAKER_06: So yeah, it's really exciting.
- 36:49SPEAKER_06: Our OUC half marathon, uh the in December, it will be 50 this coming December, and uh we're really looking forward to that.
- 36:56SPEAKER_07: Well, that's that's really grown, hasn't it?
- 36:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, oh yeah, it's great.
- 37:00SPEAKER_06: It's great.
- 37:00SPEAKER_06: In fact, Dez is going to be participating this year, so we're quite excited.
- 37:04SPEAKER_07: Oh yeah?
- 37:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 37:06SPEAKER_07: I I need to get over there, John.
- 37:07SPEAKER_07: Oh, you're welcome.
- 37:08SPEAKER_07: Anytime.
- 37:09SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'd be happy to.
- 37:11SPEAKER_07: So I mean, as a as a race director, and your background in race directing is is tremendous.
- 37:15SPEAKER_07: The fact that one time you're named National Race Director of the Year, what makes a great race?
- 37:20SPEAKER_06: There are a lot of components.
- 37:22SPEAKER_06: I I think well, I start with at least the basics.
- 37:25SPEAKER_06: I I I'm very much ingrained in the operations because at the very beginning, if you don't have first a great location, staging area, and course, and you don't set it up properly and have all the that you know logistical and mechanical side taken care of, if that's not down there, then then you're not gonna have a good race.
- 37:47SPEAKER_06: Um so we worked really hard on the operations part.
- 37:50SPEAKER_06: Um I Betsy and I had two great partners have for a long time.
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, one was Tom Ward, who was one of the best operations people in the business, Natalie Casey with marketing and PR.
- 38:02SPEAKER_06: And um so but you've you've got to have the foundation.
- 38:06SPEAKER_06: And so once you do that, then you add the the cool stuff, right?
- 38:11SPEAKER_06: And to me, you want a race to have its own identity, it gets its own energy, if you will, um, and theme sometimes.
- 38:20SPEAKER_06: Obviously, when we talk theme, we we usually get into Run Disney.
- 38:23SPEAKER_06: But um, but even other events, it there's it can be whether it's a downtown event, whether it's one that's more, you know, goes into some neighborhoods that are just very scenic.
- 38:36SPEAKER_06: Like we have Winter Park is a suburb of Orlando, which is beautiful.
- 38:40SPEAKER_06: Um, brick streets, you know, almost, you know, you think of you know, just these beautiful houses and picket fence almost right in the beautiful brick streets.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: And we have that.
- 38:49SPEAKER_06: And so, but each one takes on an identity, but then you can add to that.
- 38:52SPEAKER_06: Like we might have it where it's uh um we'll have a it's kind of like mine and dine is has done this now, but before that we had a park avenue 5k where we would have restaurants come out and we'd have sampling and so forth.
- 39:05SPEAKER_06: And again, this is nothing new now, but it was new back then to you know, come out and come to a race and you know have uh have a little sampling of some of the of the areas restaurants and whatnot.
- 39:17SPEAKER_07: Come to a race and leave heavier than when you started.
- 39:19SPEAKER_06: Oh, uh believe me.
- 39:20SPEAKER_06: And one of our sponsors one year uh for several years, we put on the Outback 12K.
- 39:25SPEAKER_06: Oh, golly.
- 39:26SPEAKER_06: Outback put on the full meal afterwards, talking everything.
- 39:30SPEAKER_06: It was it was amazing.
- 39:33SPEAKER_06: And yes, I do wonder sometimes.
- 39:35SPEAKER_06: Uh there's a marathon in in Ireland, you probably know the Dublin, and it's I I'd like to I want to weigh people at the beginning and then at the end because I swear to it's a nine hour limit, and I you know they hit the pubs all along the way.
- 39:47SPEAKER_06: I truly believe some people end up weighing more than when they you know at the finish.
- 39:52SPEAKER_07: How many pints, how many pints of Guinness can you put down in a marathon?
- 39:56SPEAKER_07: Yeah, good stuff.
- 39:57SPEAKER_05: Well, gosh, now I I want to split the G on a pint of Guinness and have a bloomin' onion all at the same time.
- 40:03SPEAKER_05: So, John, you know, thank you so much for that.
- 40:05SPEAKER_05: But you know, one of the main reasons why we wanted to have you on Rise and Run is obviously, you know, you are an instrumental factor in bringing the Run Disney story to all of our lives.
- 40:19SPEAKER_05: And you know, let's talk origin here.
- 40:22SPEAKER_05: When did Disney first approach you, or how did that conversation start to create the product that we all enjoy today?
- 40:32SPEAKER_06: So if you really want to go origin, the real origin, as I told you, we were starting to put events on um late 70s, and then into the course from there on forward and into the 80s, we really started making it, it was very serious, and we were adding more and more.
- 40:46SPEAKER_06: Um, and we created a running series in Central Florida.
- 40:50SPEAKER_06: And so uh one of my partners had some ties to Disney.
- 40:55SPEAKER_06: Um, and uh in fact his wife was a was an ambassador and at one time, and so um actually presented the idea in the 80s uh to Disney.
- 41:09SPEAKER_06: Um, but you know, everything's timing, right?
- 41:12SPEAKER_06: And what's going on and and so forth, and it it didn't go anywhere.
- 41:16SPEAKER_06: Well, fast forward, there's this guy you might have heard of, his name's Michael Eisner.
- 41:21SPEAKER_06: Heard of him and uh he uh didn't always do things, you know, the the the norm.
- 41:28SPEAKER_06: He he thought out of the box, everybody knows that.
- 41:31SPEAKER_06: And and um he shook up a lot of things, including the marketing side, and he wanted to do other things um at Disney.
- 41:41SPEAKER_06: And so what ended up happening is uh one of the marketing folks uh came and um just we were talking and they said, Hey, you know, if you ever have any ideas, you know, we're just open to stuff, just whatever you think.
- 41:57SPEAKER_06: And it's kind of like, okay, let's dust off this book.
- 42:00SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 42:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 42:01SPEAKER_06: Um, so yeah, we have some ideas.
- 42:03SPEAKER_06: So we made the presentation.
- 42:05SPEAKER_06: Um, and um, and they uh and again, I could get into a lot of detail, but it took um almost two years.
- 42:14SPEAKER_06: That was in '92.
- 42:16SPEAKER_06: And it took almost two years, um, and I can't tell you how many meetings, um, until one of the senior VPs greenlighted it, uh, gave it the green light.
- 42:26SPEAKER_06: And uh, and if we I'll be honest, that and this is a true story.
- 42:29SPEAKER_06: I was with the two marketing people, and um, and after this last meeting, I'd gone to so many, and I'd always say, So what what what?
- 42:38SPEAKER_06: They go, no, no.
- 42:39SPEAKER_06: And so after this one, I'm like, okay, well, so what do we do next?
- 42:42SPEAKER_06: And they're like, because they were kind of a little, they were kind of like smiling, almost a little giddy.
- 42:45SPEAKER_06: I go, so what do we do next?
- 42:47SPEAKER_06: What's going on?
- 42:47SPEAKER_06: I go, you you didn't get that?
- 42:48SPEAKER_06: I go, no, what?
- 42:50SPEAKER_06: Like, it's done.
- 42:51SPEAKER_06: We're in.
- 42:52SPEAKER_06: I'm like, you it's like, I'm like, I can't believe it.
- 42:54SPEAKER_06: It's like, geez, finally.
- 42:56SPEAKER_06: So yeah, we got the green light, and but but that was just the beginning.
- 43:00SPEAKER_06: There were a lot of challenges once we got the green light.
- 43:04SPEAKER_06: Such as well, you know, in any b in any company, but particularly large companies, um, and even our small company, you know, you have marketing and you have operations, right?
- 43:14SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 43:15SPEAKER_06: They don't always mesh, shall we say?
- 43:19SPEAKER_06: Um, and operations was not necessarily totally keen on it happening, um, for a number of reasons.
- 43:29SPEAKER_06: And um, I mean, there's a lot of reasons.
- 43:32SPEAKER_06: I mean, yeah, I can think of that.
- 43:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 43:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 43:34SPEAKER_06: Caught the the course itself, where's it gonna go?
- 43:36SPEAKER_06: The roadways.
- 43:37SPEAKER_06: We're talking about, you know, going through three at that time, three parts.
- 43:41SPEAKER_06: Um, and you're talking about um, well, actually, but yeah, it didn't matter.
- 43:46SPEAKER_06: But um, and then what are you gonna do as far as cast members coming in?
- 43:51SPEAKER_06: What are you gonna do as far as they guess?
- 43:52SPEAKER_06: And it was, you know, it's not like, hey, let's just shut the roads and we're good.
- 43:57SPEAKER_06: Um, and even though some of my counterparts thought, oh, you're Got it easy because you're at Disney.
- 44:01SPEAKER_06: You don't have to shut down, you know, you don't have to deal with the police, all that.
- 44:04SPEAKER_06: No, no, no, no.
- 44:05SPEAKER_06: It was probably more difficult because we had to worry about backstage.
- 44:08SPEAKER_06: We had to worry about, like I say, both staff, you know, cast members as well as as runners.
- 44:14SPEAKER_06: But Disney, they they did a great job.
- 44:16SPEAKER_06: They worked with again.
- 44:17SPEAKER_06: Um the challenges that were from the operations, I understood them being an operations person.
- 44:23SPEAKER_06: And ultimately, although it took probably two years of uh once we had the green light, I mean, again, we we we did the race within a year of that, but but it took two years after that for me to really work with particularly a head ops guy, and we actually ended up being great friends, but it was it took a while, uh, because but we spoke the same language.
- 44:45SPEAKER_06: And so um, but I I I knew where he was was coming from.
- 44:49SPEAKER_06: I knew where their operations team, their their you know, reservations were.
- 44:53SPEAKER_06: And I will tell you that part of that, because of that, the course was not what we had wanted the first couple years.
- 45:01SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 45:01SPEAKER_06: But eventually that that that's that did start to change.
- 45:05SPEAKER_06: But there uh we did have to run a part of the course that was kind of infamous for the first uh probably three years.
- 45:12SPEAKER_06: Um, I don't know if you ever heard about it, but it was Bear Island Road.
- 45:15SPEAKER_06: And uh it actually went by the uh water treatment center.
- 45:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 45:20SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah, not not a not a park.
- 45:23SPEAKER_06: That particular one was not a park.
- 45:24SPEAKER_06: That was so um um, but it it it again, it all ended up working out, but um it was challenging at first.
- 45:33SPEAKER_06: And so, yeah, you just learned to, you know, to to work things out and it did.
- 45:39SPEAKER_06: It uh um, but it but again, it it wasn't easy, but it was great once we got that once we got the green light and we were able to make things happen.
- 45:49unknown: All right.
- 45:49SPEAKER_05: So, John, I want to follow up with something that you just said and you know, in terms of, you know, I know you're talking about Bear Road and our our favorite sewage treatment plant that you know there's not enough smellalizers in the world that can help mask that.
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: But you you made a comment about you know there was certain things that you wanted to do with that original course that you weren't able to do.
- 46:09SPEAKER_05: What was the grand vision in your head like?
- 46:11SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously touching you know as much of the parks as possible, but but what was the vision in your head that you wanted to give to the runners to experience?
- 46:21SPEAKER_06: Well, I guess number one was not to go by the sewage treatment plant.
- 46:28SPEAKER_06: But but understand, and again, this is where you you we compromise, right?
- 46:32SPEAKER_06: Because you have to remember too, so Animal Kingdom wasn't there.
- 46:36SPEAKER_06: So I had, and again, I don't want to get into the technical logistical side of it.
- 46:41SPEAKER_06: I I had no at a certain point I had no outlet.
- 46:44SPEAKER_06: I had to, and I needed 26 miles, right?
- 46:47SPEAKER_06: So there were there are lim there were limitations.
- 46:50SPEAKER_06: My preference would have been to do a lot more, you know, on World Drive, you know, north and south, and um, and pick up that mileage.
- 46:59SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, we just had to deal with the reality of the situation.
- 47:03SPEAKER_06: And um, so that would have been my preference.
- 47:08SPEAKER_06: Um, and I oh, I do want to tell you though, it's interesting because um uh, and uh we can get into more of this later, both on whether it's a local, you know, non-Disney or Disney event.
- 47:20SPEAKER_06: But um I I mentioned even from the beginning, get all your foundation right, do everything correct, the course and everything is so important.
- 47:27SPEAKER_06: Um course is huge, of course, of course, but um and our course, the first couple, really several years, um, a great, great guy, uh Don Gework, he was a Disney animator at the time.
- 47:44SPEAKER_06: And Don was an avid runner, we we knew him, and and he helped Tom and I design those first few courses, which was really cool because of course he had such great, you know, experience and background working and running out at Disney himself.
- 47:59SPEAKER_06: So um, and he was very creative, obviously.
- 48:03SPEAKER_06: And so Don really helped us uh to you know get the best course we could.
- 48:08SPEAKER_06: Uh again, I guess it was uh outside of limitations the first few years.
- 48:13SPEAKER_06: But so I I just always thought that was really neat.
- 48:15SPEAKER_06: We kind of had an insider, if you will, with Don and Don to this day, he's a perfect, by the way.
- 48:20SPEAKER_07: Oh wow, wow, and he's still going.
- 48:22SPEAKER_07: That's great.
- 48:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 48:24SPEAKER_07: That's great.
- 48:25SPEAKER_07: Let's talk about that first one.
- 48:26SPEAKER_07: How did that field get set for that first marathon?
- 48:30SPEAKER_07: So, as far as just the the particip number of participants.
- 48:33SPEAKER_07: Well, number of participants, and you had some well-known participants in that one also.
- 48:38SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 48:39SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we've had celebrity runners, particularly, were uh abundant, and and what a lot of people don't know necessarily um is that um like every race in that era, this was a serious road race.
- 48:51SPEAKER_06: No, serious and fun, but but it was absolutely as serious and and definitely more much more serious then than it is now in the sense of competitive runners, because we actually had a prize purse.
- 49:04SPEAKER_06: We had a prize purse the first excuse me, two years, and um we had um Leonor Lenoit Svetsev uh Switzer from Russia and Judith Judith Nagy from Hungary were our winners, and um they got prize money.
- 49:24SPEAKER_06: Um, so we had some very, very uh excellent top runners out there, and but then we also had Joan Samuelson, we'd have uh Burrough Salazar, um Jeff Galloway, obviously, right?
- 49:39SPEAKER_06: Big time, and um Frank Shorter.
- 49:43SPEAKER_06: Shorter, yeah, pretty much you name Bill Rogers.
- 49:46SPEAKER_06: We had them all.
- 49:47SPEAKER_06: They're all the all the legends from the past.
- 49:49SPEAKER_06: Um they weren't in the past then, but but the legends that uh that uh have now are now legends, um, we pretty much had everybody come through there.
- 49:59SPEAKER_11: Big deal.
- 50:00SPEAKER_06: That's cool.
- 50:01SPEAKER_11: How many runners did you expect in this first race?
- 50:05SPEAKER_06: Can I tell you a funny story about that?
- 50:07SPEAKER_11: Oh please, please.
- 50:10SPEAKER_06: So um I had tapped Fred Lebow, and for again, people that have been in the running uh for decades like myself, uh Fred is the person that that created the New York City Marathon.
- 50:23SPEAKER_06: He's the one that took it from four laps around Central Park to the five boroughs of New York.
- 50:28SPEAKER_06: Visionary, amazing guy.
- 50:30SPEAKER_06: Um and um so I asked Fred to be our honorary chairman.
- 50:36SPEAKER_06: Well, that was all great.
- 50:38SPEAKER_06: Um, Fred was going actually through some physical challenges at the time.
- 50:44SPEAKER_06: Um, and um I I say that only because, well, he just was, but uh, all that to say, um, he loved Disney, he loved the idea, so he was happy to be our honorary chairman.
- 50:55SPEAKER_06: But we were working with one of the senior VPs, and um, I had been telling them that I expected, you know, hopefully around 4,000 or so, and maybe more, maybe five.
- 51:07SPEAKER_06: And um so, so this guy asked Fred while we're doing all the planning and we're kind of not getting into it, asked him his expert advice and how many people do you think we're gonna get, you know, at the start line?
- 51:21SPEAKER_06: And he goes, Well, you know, hopefully a thousand, you know, maybe a little less.
- 51:26SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, my heart stops because I know with this senior VP, I mean, I've kind of sold him on the whole few thousand, and he's looking at me, you know, like daggers in his eyes, and I'm just like, oh my God.
- 51:38SPEAKER_06: So I expected more.
- 51:39SPEAKER_06: Um, I'm not sure where Fred's mind was on that, but I will tell you this the reality of the situation was um we had hoped for that 5,000, and when we opened it up um in um basically January Feb of of uh uh 93, yeah.
- 52:03SPEAKER_06: Um anyways, by August of 93, we hit 8,400 and we shut it down.
- 52:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 52:15SPEAKER_06: We were scared to death.
- 52:16SPEAKER_06: We didn't know what to do, right?
- 52:19SPEAKER_06: And if I had left that open, um we would have been the largest first-time marathon ever.
- 52:27SPEAKER_06: It was the second only to LA.
- 52:29SPEAKER_06: LA had gotten around 9,000.
- 52:32SPEAKER_06: Um, we shut it down.
- 52:35SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, we could have obviously easily surpassed LA.
- 52:39SPEAKER_06: Um, but uh I that was a whole new world for all of us, myself, Betsy, team, and yeah, wow, what do you do with 8,000 people?
- 52:50SPEAKER_06: I mean, that was huge back then.
- 52:52SPEAKER_11: Huge.
- 52:53SPEAKER_11: Yeah, so I guess you had to uh revamp what you thought your start line area and everything was gonna be with that many people.
- 53:00SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 53:01SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 53:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and and the course, because remember, we have pinch points, and we we do to this day, as you know, the growth and all, particularly when you go backstage and and we work with with Disney and in Destroy Engineering and all, and we work really hard, and that's why we do the pulsing and everything else, to try to make it uh you know, smooth and you know, hopefully is not as you know, try to uh keep it less crowded as best we can.
- 53:26SPEAKER_06: But um, but demand of course is strong.
- 53:29SPEAKER_06: But so yeah, um 8400, that was that was wild.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: That must have been really a cool experience to have it start so popular and then see that consistency stay there.
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: John, I'm wondering, besides the number of runners, what was the biggest surprise that first race morning um for the marathon?
- 53:50SPEAKER_06: It was kind of two things, but kind of the first real surprise came because we had worked out again, logistics and all.
- 53:56SPEAKER_06: I really felt good.
- 53:57SPEAKER_06: We we had it down, we had we were all ready to go.
- 54:00SPEAKER_06: And I guess hadn't really um maybe collaborated as much or met as often with entertainment.
- 54:09SPEAKER_06: And remember, Disney does entertainment better than anybody, right?
- 54:12SPEAKER_06: I mean, they're the best in the world, and that's that's the whole other reason for people coming here, right?
- 54:17SPEAKER_06: And um I'll never forget we had a way that we were bringing the runners out, and Betsy and I and Tom and Ollie figured out, and and uh I guess again, we hadn't reviewed the plan with entertainment, and suddenly there's like these big stilt walkers and just monstrous things that that coming are coming out that I didn't even know were gonna be there, and they're about to collide with my runners.
- 54:44SPEAKER_06: Oh, geez, and I'm like, okay, time out.
- 54:50SPEAKER_06: Um, well, and so I found the head of entertainment.
- 54:52SPEAKER_06: I'm like, you guys gotta stop because we gotta get, I gotta go.
- 54:56SPEAKER_06: We got I mean, I gotta get the runners.
- 54:57SPEAKER_06: They they have to go over here.
- 54:58SPEAKER_06: That's then you can do whatever you want, I don't care.
- 55:01SPEAKER_06: But so that was a big surprise that morning.
- 55:04SPEAKER_06: I'll bet it was and I think the other big surprise, and I don't know if it would be a surprise, but I have to tell you, it was incredibly exciting and actually overwhelming to know that at that moment when we had everything set and we were getting ready to go, the we basically everything, all the parks, they stopped, right?
- 55:25SPEAKER_06: I mean, and I was like, wow, that's this is like pretty darn cool.
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is fine.
- 55:34SPEAKER_06: So it's like, and everybody, I don't mean to say it this way, but they were waiting for me to start the race, you know, and I'm like, dang, guess better, better do this.
- 55:45SPEAKER_06: So uh no, it was very, very exciting, and we were thrilled.
- 55:48SPEAKER_06: And and logistically, again, uh it went really well the first year.
- 55:52SPEAKER_06: So no, luckily, no surprises there, just at the start.
- 55:55SPEAKER_11: Those first races, uh, like as we all know now, we we go up, we get her, bib has her timing chip on it.
- 56:02SPEAKER_11: Was there a timing?
- 56:03SPEAKER_11: There wasn't timing chips back then, was there?
- 56:05SPEAKER_03: No.
- 56:06SPEAKER_11: It was this stopwatch, uh gun time ready to go, right?
- 56:11SPEAKER_06: No, well, at that point, um we had advanced a little beyond that, and we were into um tags.
- 56:20SPEAKER_06: You wore a tag on your bib, and we would pull the bib off, and I mean the bib off.
- 56:26SPEAKER_06: We pulled the tag off as you came in and we would put it on a skewer.
- 56:30SPEAKER_06: Oh, right.
- 56:31SPEAKER_06: And um it got, let me tell you, we got to where we we'd run multiple shoots.
- 56:35SPEAKER_06: It got it was very, a very intricate program, and and you had to learn it.
- 56:40SPEAKER_06: I mean, it was but that's how we did it with the larger races, particularly, is we would put the we would put your tag on a on a skewer and keep those in order.
- 56:50SPEAKER_06: And all and we had your information on those tags.
- 56:53SPEAKER_06: And then those tags, we have a bunch of folks inputting that information into your trash heady or whatever you're going to wait back in time, whatever your computer of choice might have been, whatever you could get at the time.
- 57:08SPEAKER_06: Um, and so that then advanced, John, from um inputting to really sophisticated.
- 57:16SPEAKER_06: We got a barcode on the tag.
- 57:18SPEAKER_06: Now we were cooking because now you put those tags in there, and all you had to do is think, think, think, think, think and read them in.
- 57:25SPEAKER_06: But even that had challenges because if you people didn't put it right, they'd mix them, they'd flip them.
- 57:30SPEAKER_06: My IT, my computer guy, who wrote all the all the code for this, he actually created a program because it would happen so many times that a whole stash would a stash would get flipped.
- 57:40SPEAKER_06: He had a program that would reflip it.
- 57:43SPEAKER_06: Oh, he was lying.
- 57:44SPEAKER_06: I mean, he was he was great, he was way ahead of it.
- 57:46SPEAKER_06: Sharp, huh?
- 57:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 57:47SPEAKER_06: But anyway, so that's that's so we went to barcode, and then yeah, and then the holy grail came, and that was the chip which first you wore on your shoe, and then we kept begging them to get it to make it to so that it would be on the on the bib, and then eventually that did happen.
- 58:01SPEAKER_06: And I could give you an hour-long story on how all that evolved too, but that's not what we're here for tonight.
- 58:06SPEAKER_07: That's okay.
- 58:06SPEAKER_07: That's okay.
- 58:07SPEAKER_07: We were enjoying it.
- 58:07SPEAKER_07: And and you kids know what a trash 80 is?
- 58:10unknown: I didn't know.
- 58:11SPEAKER_07: T-S80.
- 58:12SPEAKER_07: They don't know what a trash 80 is, but I know what it is.
- 58:14SPEAKER_11: I'm John probably does, yeah.
- 58:16SPEAKER_11: Come on, I'm I'm older than that.
- 58:18SPEAKER_11: 264, Tieris 80.
- 58:20SPEAKER_11: Yep, all those things.
- 58:22SPEAKER_08: Caution runners, change of topic ahead.
- 58:27SPEAKER_07: I don't know about you guys, but I probably had too much fun during that interview.
- 58:31SPEAKER_07: Of course, the we'll play the rest of it next week.
- 58:34SPEAKER_07: Uh John's a great guy, and it was uh it was delightful talking with him, and I learned a lot about Disney, run Disney, that I just didn't know.
- 58:44SPEAKER_07: Between researching in order to chat with John and the stories that he told us, I thought it was just great.
- 58:53SPEAKER_07: So I'm looking forward to hearing part two.
- 58:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think the thing I appreciated about this interview so much was that you know, I I decided not to comment on it because you know I wanted the focus to be on John, but you know, when he talked about you know only a handful of running stores back in the 70s, you know.
- 59:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's another person that opened up a running store in the 70s when there was only a handful, and that was you know Jeff Galloway.
- 59:16SPEAKER_05: And obviously that was you know monumentous for his career, and obviously uh the same for John and the fact that those two ended up crossing paths and working together for some.
- 59:26SPEAKER_05: Oh, they truly did.
- 59:27SPEAKER_05: It's very it's very serendipitous.
- 59:29SPEAKER_05: So it was really great to hear all those wonderful stories.
- 59:32SPEAKER_07: Yeah, there were two things that that uh John said.
- 59:35SPEAKER_07: That was one, of course, Jeff was very proud of the fact that Fidipides was the first running specialty store in the country, the one in Tallahassee.
- 59:42SPEAKER_07: And the other one was John's story about I just was too small, and uh, and I'm thinking Jeff kind of fits into that.
- 59:51SPEAKER_07: And I remember Jim Ryan.
- 59:53SPEAKER_07: Remember when Jim Ryan talked to us?
- 59:54SPEAKER_07: Jim, how'd you get involved in running?
- 59:55SPEAKER_07: He goes, Well, I wanted to play baseball and I wanted to play football, but I wasn't any good at it.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_07: And I ended up uh finding out that I was good at running.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_07: So I thought both of those were interesting.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_07: So yeah, uh, I'll be curious to hear what John has to say next week.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_07: All right, friends, announcements.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_07: I meant to say this last week.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_07: Uh Weston Galloway wrote to me, and he has updated our customized training plan discount.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_07: So that information that is pinned to the featured section of our Facebook group page should be current and should be updated.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_07: So if you're interested in that, that's available.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_07: Our next Zoom is not tonight, but next Thursday, 23rd of July.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_07: Hope to see you there.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_07: Always a fun time.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_07: I look forward to those on Thursday nights.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_07: Highlight of my week, spending it with my friends.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_07: And of course, upcoming episodes.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_07: We also already mentioned that next week we'll have part two of our interview with John Hughes.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_07: And now please stand clear of the door.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_07: It's time for a race report.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_07: The race report, sponsored by our good friend Tom Stokes of Stoked Metabolic Training.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_07: Stokes.fit slash rise and run coaching is the place to go to learn more.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_07: Or you could just hang around for the next couple of minutes while we talk to Tom because he's here visiting with us tonight.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_07: Hiya, Tom, how you doing?
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_10: I'm doing fantastic as always.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_10: Happy to be here.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_07: It's great.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_07: It's good to see you, my friend.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_07: Good to see you guys.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Tom, you just wrapped up the summer challenge.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_07: Right?
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_07: Just ended uh just ended Friday, I think.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_07: Had your last weigh in on Sunday.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_10: Sunday, Sunday was weigh in.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah, had a had a meeting to let everybody know the results and all that.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_07: So how did it go for you this time?
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_07: Well, first of all, let's start with this one.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_07: How many challenges have you run now?
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_10: Oh, we're we're a five probably five or six challenges at this time.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_07: Well man, okay.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_10: Maybe four or five.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_10: I lose track, but everyone, everyone's a little bit different and and brings brings new challenges for me.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_10: So it was fun.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_10: This was a good one.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_07: In in my opinion, and I don't take enough advantage of them, Tom.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_07: I think you do a wonderful job.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_07: The times that I get to join you on your Zoom calls, you're always prepared and you always have something ready to present to us.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_07: Almost always.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_10: And I get to do what I love every day.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_07: Really worthwhile.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_07: So how did this one go?
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_10: This one went fantastic.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_10: I mean, it was a it was an they're they're always a blast, but uh I think you know, I I generally do too.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_10: I do the New Year Challenge and the Summer Challenge.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_10: And summer's a little summer's always a little more risky, you know.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_10: It's it's six weeks in the in the middle of the summer.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_10: Um, one of the hardest times for people to to get healthier.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_10: You know, you got you got 4th of July, you got cookouts, you got vacation, kids are home from school.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_10: Um, there may or may not be a cooler full of beer sitting around at most times during the summer.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_10: But this one, everybody came to work.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_10: I mean, I think it was one of the the highest, you know, people come in and and and they sometimes fall off along the way, or a lot of people don't submit final weigh-ins.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_10: Maybe maybe weight loss wasn't their goal.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_10: We had 82 people submit weigh-ins by Sunday.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_10: I was missus wanted to kill me.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_10: I was on the laptop until nine o'clock on Sunday.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_10: Had to watch House of the Dragon.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_07: So overall, these things are growing.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_07: Have they grown over time?
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_10: They they grow they've grown a little bit.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_10: You know, I had a lot of um word of mouth this time where friend, hey, my friend's been with you for a while and said I should give this a try.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_10: Which which was tells me we're doing something right if people are sending their friends.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_07: Oh, that's always good.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_07: That's that's the best kind of endorsement, is word of mouth.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_10: And they say you're working for their friends, you know, that yeah, whether it's being injury free or or losing the weight that they want to lose, it's you you see it happening with somebody else, you're gonna call.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_10: I just couldn't believe 87 87 total weigh-ins if I'm not missing.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_10: 82.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_10: 82 total weigh-ins.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_10: Wow, that is crazy.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_10: I mean the the the craziest out of those, the craziest number to me, and I don't know why this is crazy, because it's just it's just a number.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_10: But it was uh, I don't know, symbolic, you know, like it was we 365 total pounds lost from people in six weeks.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_10: In six weeks, which is that's it's a year, it's a pound a day for the year.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_10: So I'm I I feel like we we did a good job as a team there.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_10: So it was a lot of fun.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_10: You guys did your part too.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_10: Let's talk John working out every day.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_10: I'm putting more work outs on John's calendar and in another window right now.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_10: He doesn't even know we're gonna keep we're gonna keep him from falling off.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_10: Now I'm trying.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_10: We're gonna try to get Bob back on.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_07: Oh, Bob will get back, I promise.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_07: I've i I'll talk with you offline, but I promise.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_07: I have things going on in the life here, and I am I'm ready.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_07: I'm definitely ready to get back.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_01: All right, Tom.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_01: So this was a great challenge.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Um, I was a part of it um for part of it.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: Can you tell us how um overall results went and uh who the winners were of this one?
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_10: This was actually hard.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_10: So I I always have the gram, the the big winner, right?
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_10: When I do these challenges, and that's a it's it's been based on the same thing since day one percentage of body weight loss, which you know why not pounds?
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_10: Well 270 pound persons got got more that they can lose than a 150 pound person.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_10: So we go with that percentage, but then I also like to keep it fun, keep people engaged along the way.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_10: So we did we did points along the way, and I didn't realize how addicted to points.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_10: People can be.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_10: Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_10: Um, there were there were there were some point hawks in in the mix, and you earn points for for tracking your nutrition daily and hitting the numbers, getting a workout in, hitting a personal best, and then just habits that you know, habits I view along the ways as being super helpful on somebody on a health and fitness journey.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_10: Could be simple.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_10: Drinking your water.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_10: Fairly, fairly simple, but people forget to do it.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_10: Could be hard.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_10: Digital detox was one of the weeks.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_10: So putting the phone down is tricky for people, but it helps you get better sleep, which again, all overall, the bigger picture.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_10: I woke up Monday, man, and that part's automated.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_10: My my my app tells me who won that that point game, and I woke up to a five-way tie.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_10: And that that five-way tie, a gentleman named Bob Moran, Heather Madsen, who actually came in second place on the last challenge, uh, Jenny Bonsby, Jenny Brooke, and Todd Gupton.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_10: Five people just hit every every note.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_10: So I had to pull a tiebreaker, tiebreaker out of the sky, and we went back to the body weight loss.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_10: Wasn't this uh body weight percentage loss?
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_10: And Todd Gumped, Todd Gupton won that points challenge.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_10: And if you you ever you ever see Todd out there?
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_10: Todd is my spirit animal, man.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_10: He's he he's running around in a lightning queen tutu.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_10: Like he's got you, he had the consistency, had the showmanship.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_10: Like he's he's just a good time.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_10: Go meet him if you haven't seen him at a race and give him some points there.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_10: And then yeah, this this was another one that was crazy for me.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_10: So I always look, um, you know, is it somebody I'm I open every every time I do a challenge?
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_10: Anybody I'm already working for, you guys, the doors wide open.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_10: I come on in.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_10: I want my people to be in the game.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_10: You know, they love them, they love the challenge.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_10: So I took a look and I said, All right, it's some somebody I already work with.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_10: Took first place.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_10: I want a rookie out there.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_10: So rookie had to be somebody I was not currently working with or working with in the last year.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_10: When I first started all this, I met a wonderful woman and she did incredible.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_10: She did incredible.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_10: It was before I was doing challenges, she lost 7.25% of her body weight.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_10: 15.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_10: I got my I got my notes, 15.6 pounds.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_03: Good for it.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_10: She actually had the most weight loss of anybody.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_10: And her name is Tiffany Embry.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_10: She she's part of another Run Disney crew that they all dress matching costumes, they always look amazing.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_10: Tiffany, I hope you you told your crew because you earned this one.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_10: So Tiffany was like one of the very first people when I went virtual when I was online that I started working with.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_10: And then life got in the way, which life gets in the way for I think everybody, every once in a while.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_10: And we stayed in communication, checked in on each other, saw our races, but I it had to be two, maybe three years since we worked together.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_10: And she reached out, she's like, I'm just I'm not not where I want to be anymore.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_10: I want to get back, I want to get back after it.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_10: So I said, jump in and challenge, see if it's the right fit.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_10: I'd say it's the right fit.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_10: 15.6 pounds, 7.25% of her body weight loss.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_10: I'm so happy she's on her way back to yours.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_10: Like, so proud of her.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_10: And then, you know, it's the grand winner, because I can't just do newcomer.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_10: I had the big one.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_10: That's uh somebody, she was actually in the crew and she joined, she joined over the prior challenge, and along that way, she was running, she got injured, and she stayed in it, but she didn't she didn't have much success.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_10: But she's like, I want to keep going once I once I recover from this injury.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_10: These two Tiffany came in at 7.25% lost.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_10: Tasha Mills, 7.73.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_10: So 0.48% was was the was the is the margin.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_10: That's like I don't know, that that's a bathroom break right there.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_10: Like, but you know, I think those those are the fun wins, those are the number wins.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_10: For me, it's when I get that message, like yeah, I feel I feel better.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_10: I took some time off my race or you know, off my my mile.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_10: I'm I'm sleeping better.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_10: I got more energy for my kids.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_10: Like, that's so I don't want to say everybody's a winner, but everybody's a winner that that's stuck through it.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_07: We get a lot of positive feedback when I talk to people about the program that you're doing, Tom.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_07: So I think you're doing something right.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_07: Keep it up.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_05: All right, Tom.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_05: We're wrapping up this challenge here in the summer.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_05: But what's next on the horizon?
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_10: You know, everybody asks that, right?
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_10: When the challenge ends, and the next one, the next big one's not scheduled till uh till the new year.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_10: I like to get, you know, I gotta focus on uh focus a little on me.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_10: I got New York coming up personally, New York Marathon.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_10: I'll see you out there.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_10: Um, and I got um, you know, a little little oh yeah, we'll register for a perfect season again, so I'll see everybody out there.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_10: But based on based on the response, I think I lasted about 20 minutes until we do another challenge because everybody's everybody's been asking.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_10: So I'll take a deep breath.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_10: I'll take a deep breath for a couple weeks and then reassess the calendar and make sure it doesn't hit doesn't hit right while uh I'm in the the depths of New York training.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_10: Well maybe maybe maybe a shorter one, and then you know, we've got we've got the group coaching, we've got one-on-one as well.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_07: Right, right.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_07: Talk about that for a minute, Tom.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_07: You still got the two programs that you got going?
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_10: One-on-one, and that that's that's me holding your hand every step of the way where we we meet weekly, we work work through the problems, whatever it is.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_10: If you're if you're missing workouts, if you're binging on ice cream late at night, or if if you're just exhausted from life and you're just trying to find a way to navigate through and stay consistent on your fitness journey, that's what that one-on-one looks like.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_10: And then we got the accelerate group coaching, which man, that took on a life of its own.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_10: I know Alicia's in that chat.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_10: And Alicia, can you keep up?
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_01: No, if I walk away from my phone for even like 30 minutes, there's a hundred plus messages.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_10: It's the same 10 people, it's this people.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_10: They know I love them, so I'm glad to say that.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_10: But you know, if you're looking for for community, I think outside of the Rise and Run community, it's probably one of the best out there.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_10: Um, they have a good time, but they work their butts off.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_10: I mean, it shows Todd, he's in that group.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_10: He took away the point.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_10: Everybody that tied on the points is is part of that crew.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_10: So it's it's if you want to be surrounded by people that that want to do what do the work and and lift each other up, that is, I can't describe them in a better way.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_10: They lift each other up every day, they lift me up on days when it's hard.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_10: So I gotta thank every single person in that group just for, you know, I think they look to me to be their rock, and I don't know how if they realize sometimes how important they are at being my rock when I'm having those long days of weigh-ins coming in till nine o'clock on deadline day, and I'm trying to do the math.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_10: You know, they're they're that's that's my my family, yeah, my non-blood family.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_07: No, I understand.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_10: We they get the workouts, they get the workouts and they get the nutrition side of things too.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_10: It's just less hands-on, less one-on-one.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_07: No, we're with you 100% on that.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_07: In fact, it the community has overlapped a great deal, and the names that you have mentioned are almost well, they're familiar to me because I've either seen them on yours or they're part of the Rise and Run podcast group.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_07: I know a lot of these folks.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_10: It always shocks me when I ask, and they say I don't know what is that?
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_10: What is what is what is Rise and Run?
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_10: And then 25 episodes later, you know, a week later, they're like, How did I not know about this?
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_07: Well, we appreciate the plug.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_10: That's great.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_07: And so the uh accelerate program and the one-on-one coaching fence friends can find that at the website I mentioned earlier, right?
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_07: Stokest.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_07: Yes, sir.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_10: Stokestops, just revamp the whole website if you just yep, Stokestoff Fit slash Rise and Run Coaching.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Tom, thanks for joining us.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_07: We appreciate me, all your efforts.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_07: And we're happy and proud to have you as part of this Rise and Run family.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_07: Tom, thanks a lot.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_10: I love it here.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_07: So thanks for joining us, Tom.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_07: We enjoyed it as always.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_07: Now let's get into the race report.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_07: We start on Wednesday this week, the day after we recorded last week's episode in Rochester, New York.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_07: They ran the Summer in the City 8K, part of the Run 585 Summer Series, race two of three in that series.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_07: Our friend Matt ran this one.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_07: Matt joins us tonight for the race report spotlight.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_07: Hiya, Matt.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_07: Welcome.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_09: Hi, thank you.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_07: Glad to see you here, buddy.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_09: Happy to be here.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: All right, Matt.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: So one of the first things we always like to hear from our friends is how you got started running.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_09: Like many other people that I hear on the race report, I used to hate running.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_09: It was not my my thing at all.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_09: Um, but I am a big Pixar fan, I'm a big Toy Story fan.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_09: And so when the Toy Story 10 Miler was announced for Springtime Surprise in 2023, I was very interested in it.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_09: Run Disney's kind of been on the bucket list, but it was always a 5k because I knew those were safe for walking, no balloon ladies, all that.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_09: Um but when I heard about the 10 miler for Toy Story, I wanted to do that, so I started training.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_09: Uh ended up signing up for the challenge because we were gonna do the 5k and the 10 miler, and it just seemed to make sense to throw the 10k in there too.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_09: Why not?
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_11: Yeah, easy registration pass us.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_09: For sure.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_09: Uh and that was gonna be it.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_09: And of course, it was not it.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_09: Uh the princess half marathon the following year seemed doable because it's you know a 5k more than the 10 miler.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_09: And since then I've done marathon 2025 and Dopey in 2026, and we're signed up for more.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_11: So this race is part of the run 585 series.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_11: Can you explain that 585 series?
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_11: I kind of know what it's about because that's probably that's probably the area code of Rochester.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_09: It sure is.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_09: Yep, so it's the area code of Rochester 585.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_09: Uh, they do a 5K in June, an 8K in July, and another 5K in August.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_09: That's cool.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_09: Um, all three races are on the uh Genesee River Trail, so it's a pretty nice uh paved trail, and they are in the evenings on Wednesdays, and they uh finish off with a baked potato at the finish line.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_07: That's nice.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_07: Oh, awesome.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_07: Yeah, hey Matt, do they still brew Genesee cream ale up there?
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_09: They sure do.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_07: Oh, that's a good beer.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_07: I haven't had it for years.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's pretty popular.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_09: There's a brewery right on the river, and been there a couple times for dinner and some beers.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, nice.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_01: So, Matt, being an 8K, have you done an 8K before or was this a new distance?
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_09: Uh the only other time I've done the 8K was two years ago when I did the same challenge.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_09: So it it's it is kind of a weird distance, but it makes sense with the the 585.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_07: Absolutely.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_07: It does.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_07: And it's it's it's right around five miles, right?
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_09: Yeah, just just over five miles, five point one, I think.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_07: Um, any anything specific about the course that you remember?
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_07: I mean, what was the crowd like?
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_09: And uh the crowd was decent.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_09: Uh a couple couple hundred people, I think 300 finishers, uh, which is pretty typical for these events.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_09: Um, it was no, it was very warm in that day, uh, like most of the country.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_09: We had uh temperatures in the the mid-80s, which you know is pretty warm for up here.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_09: It's a nice course.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_09: They've done a good job with the the river trail.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_09: Uh starts at a park and ends in in the same park.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_09: It was an out and back this year.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_09: They had to modify the course a little bit for some construction, but shaded for about half of it.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_07: Matt, what what else you got coming up?
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_09: We've got well, I've got the 5k next month there.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_07: Oh, right, the 585.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_09: And then we're gonna my wife and I are signed up for the Detroit International Half Marathon in October.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_07: Ooh, I I've heard good things about that one.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_07: Does that one go through the tunnel or just the marathon?
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_09: Nope, that one does too.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah, neat.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_09: Neat off your passport.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_07: Oh, neat.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_09: And then uh we're going right from there down to Wine and Dine weekend.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_09: We're doing uh all three races for Wine and Dine, and we're signed up for Dopey again.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_09: Oh, good for you.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_09: We look forward to seeing you there.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_11: So for this 585 series, is there a special medal at the end or anything special at the end of it?
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_11: One other question.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_11: What's the deal with the potato?
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_09: Uh I don't know what the deal with the potato is.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_09: That's the easier question.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_09: It's uh one of the local barbecue places, just uh has a table of baked potatoes with all of the fix-ins, sour cream, cheese, bacon, barbecue chicken.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_09: Um, and it's just their thing, I guess.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_09: They're each race has its own finisher metal.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_09: There's no challenge medal, but there is a challenge gift.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_09: Uh it changes year to year.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_09: The last time I did it two years ago, it was a towel.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_09: Uh, this year it's a backpack, so it's a pretty sizable backpack with the logos for the individual races.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_09: And this year each of the medals have magnets, so you can line them up.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_07: Oh, neat.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_07: Well, Matt, thanks for taking the time.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_07: Sounds like a fun run.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_07: It really does.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_07: Middle of the summer, something to do in the evening.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_09: Yeah, not too bad.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_07: Glad you joined us to tell us about it, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_07: See you soon.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_07: Thanks.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_07: Okay, let's continue on Thursday in Corolla, North Carolina, where Rachel and her family did the Lighthouse 5K.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_07: Rachel with her husband and two children.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_07: Really proud of the boys.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_07: This was their very first 5K.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_07: The youngest did it sitting in his stroller and yelling support to everybody as they took turns pushing them.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_07: But her oldest, Lincoln, or Link, I'm but her oldest Link was one of the youngest people to finish the 5K.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_07: Congratulations, Link.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_07: Congrats on finishing that 5K.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_07: And since it's your first one, that's a PR.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_07: Meanwhile, at a local running club in Lowell, and I guess it's Lowell, Massachusetts.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_07: I'm not sure if there's a Lowell somewhere else, I don't know, but Audrey didn't tell me.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_07: Audrey was so proud because she had an officially timed mile on a track from a run club, besting her old mile PR by a minute and 16 seconds.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_07: Now, not a real race report, but an event that was important to Audrey, and we wanted to highlight that and congratulate her.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_07: Now, starting on Friday, there's a big one, and this one is to me has always been almost unfathomable hard to believe.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_07: The Hard Rock 100.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_07: Coach Twiggs did this one for the 18th time.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_07: He had, I think this is wonderful, he had a wonderful crew, a strong team to support him.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_07: His daughter was their crew chief.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_07: That's a hard job.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_07: Being a crew chief on a run like this, you've got to be dedicated and paying attention to what your runner needs.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_07: She did a wonderful job of that.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_07: Chris's two sons were able to help him as pacers in part of the race.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_07: So golly, I know he's proud of all of that.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_07: Uh he talked about how important it was that his daughter took care of his hydration, his nutrition.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_07: Parts of the course, parts of this incredibly grueling course were they called it hazy.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_07: Well, it was smoky due to fires in the area.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_07: Even at the 14,000 foot mark.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_07: Good grief.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_07: It's hard enough breathing at the 14,000 foot mark without a bunch of smoke getting into your lungs.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_07: Nonetheless, that's just more craziness.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_07: Now Chris struggled early in this race.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_07: You know how I talked about running the first mile and see if it yeah, he's talking about the first 30 miles.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_07: But he got stronger on the second day.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_07: After that sun comes up that second day, sometimes that's like a real boost of energy.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_07: Did well the course was very slippery.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_07: The dry air tended to make the course slippery.
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_07: And even with good trail shoes, he fell a couple of times.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_07: Hit his shoulder one time pretty hard.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_07: And he as he described it, got a uh what did he call it?
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_07: He didn't say a piece of rock.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_05: He got uh he got something in his knee.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_07: Yeah, he got something embedded in his knee.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_07: Sounded awful.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_07: I mean, to the point where he he had to dig it out himself.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_07: Uh got great hate help at the aid station.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_07: Finished feeling great.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_07: Finished feeling great.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_07: Even though he's got a bloody knee and a sore shoulder.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_07: That's that's great feeling for uh somebody finish the Hard Rock 100.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_07: But his podcast is called uh it's called Hard Talk, I believe.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_07: No matter how many times you've done something, you're never sure you're gonna finish it.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_07: So finishing it feels great.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_07: Congratulations to Coach Twiggs on finishing that amazing event on the Hard Rock 100.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_07: All right, let's move on to Saturday, where David was in Charlottesville, Virginia for the Boarshead Turn and Burn Five Mile Trail Race.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_07: This is part three of four of the Charlottesville Area Trail Runners Summer Race series.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_07: Race goes through some walking trails and golf courses on the country club grounds, then it enters the woods for a steep ascent on some beautiful trails, 800 feet of elevation over five miles.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_07: David, I agree that's pretty steep.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_07: Unfortunately, you came in right behind the Hard Rock 100.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_07: So but that is pretty steep.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_07: So congratulations for that.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_07: It was warm, made for a slow day.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_07: That's smart.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_07: Wonderful breakfast at the end, and the chance to run with friends made it a great way to start the weekend.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_07: Good job, David.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_07: In Barling, Arkansas, the 11th annual Brett Morrison Memorial, No Runners Forgotten, Chicken Run 8K.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_07: Several runners there.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_07: Ryan said, Well, Ryan's post you need to read on Facebook.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_07: In summary, Ryan says the attempts were about 80.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_07: He thought he was pacing a female friend to a master's win in her division, which in fact she got.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_07: But as he's running up a big hill, thinking that the person behind him is the woman he's pacing, he turns around to find that he's pacing some bearded guy in compression shorts.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_07: Not exactly who he was expecting to see.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_07: So he settled in working on his own pace.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_07: Uh, started reeling in other male masters runners, and just before the finish line, he lost his lunch.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_07: Bottom line, he still finished and PR'd by one second.
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_07: Ryan, congratulations.
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_07: Stephanie was at this race.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_07: Shelby Allison tricked her boyfriend into doing this one.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_07: I'm not going to ask how you tricked him, Shelby Allison.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_07: That's okay.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_07: Uh she had a rough start with the race.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_07: She she tripped a little bit early, hurt her wrist, slowed down, so it became a catered training run for her, and she finished with a chicken medal at the end.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_07: And Joe did this one.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_07: The amigos were on the road, not in Fort Smith, but in Barling.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_07: Uh age group first place finished for Amigo Johnny, third place finished for Gary.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_07: Those are in the 75 to 79-year-old age group, and an age group second place finished for Joe in the 80 and above age group.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_07: Always impressed with that.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_11: And Joe's got some heavy training to start doing.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_11: He got picked for London this year.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_07: Isn't that impressive?
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_07: I mean, yeah.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_07: Now Joe's done it before, I believe.
- 1:26:13unknown: Yes.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_05: Yes, I believe he has, yeah.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_07: Yeah, he was he was a little bit younger.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_07: Well, yeah.
- 1:26:21SPEAKER_07: Good for him.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_07: In New York City, the New York Roadrunners 9-11 Memorial and Museum for Miler, Divya and Caitlin were there.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_07: Lori was in Akron, Ohio for the Akron Trail Half Marathon.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_07: Part technical trail, part crushed limestone.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_07: Tough Hills on this course.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_07: Now, again, Tough Hills, Lori was following the hard rock and used that for motivation as she ran through the hills.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_07: Neat race in uh New York, the Statue of Liberty.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_07: That's New Jersey, Bob.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_07: Is that Jersey, John?
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_07: I wasn't 100% sure.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_11: Well, she's she's an art, she's an art winner.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_07: So as I was saying, in New Jersey, the Statue of Liberty 5K, Meredith.
- 1:27:12SPEAKER_07: This is Meredith's first race report.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_07: Thanks, Meredith.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_07: Race was capped at 500 runners, took place before Liberty Island opened to the public.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_07: The 5K was seven laps around the island.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_07: Her goal time, she hit her goal time of 29 minutes.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_07: Exactly.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_07: Lessa was there also.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_07: She sent us a medal photo.
- 1:27:35SPEAKER_07: Uh Lessa will be Lessa will be back on the race report tomorrow.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_05: I would love to see the Stravas for this.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_05: If it was accurate to keep it like on the island the entire time, or if you were, you know, swimming in the Hudson at any point.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I wonder if anybody got credited for a kayak event.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_07: A couple weeks ago we had a couple months ago we had that.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_07: Can't remember who it was.
- 1:27:57SPEAKER_07: Let's go to an and I I didn't write it down, but this.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_07: Has to be Milwaukee, the 28th annual Brewers Racing Sausages 5K at American Family Field.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_07: Aaron was there.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_07: Another first race report.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_07: Thank you, Aaron.
- 1:28:12SPEAKER_07: Really fun, family friendly event, especially for baseball fans.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_07: Finish was easily the best part of the race.
- 1:28:19SPEAKER_07: They wound around the stadium, entered through the players' entrance, and then ran along the warning track.
- 1:28:24SPEAKER_07: Got their big moment on the Jumbotron thanks to the home plate camera.
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_07: The swag included a race shirt, a brat bobblehead, and a voucher for a brewers game later in the season, which she and her dad already have plans to use.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_07: That was one of the neat things when you would run when the Disney Marathon ran through ESPN.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_07: It would go through the baseball stadium there, and people were on the big screen.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_07: Also in Disneyland, when it went through the Angel Stadium, I got a chance to do that.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_07: So that's fun.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_07: Regina and Eileen, I'm pretty sure I'll explain in just a moment, were in Farmingdale, New York for the Runner's Edge women's 5K run.
- 1:29:11SPEAKER_07: Now Regina says it's a good race, good course, awesome raffles at the end.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_07: They also have watermelon, bananas, water, and ice cream.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_07: Very happy with her 33-minute finish.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_07: That's a good 5K time, Regina.
- 1:29:25SPEAKER_07: Eileen, give us a race report, but didn't tell us where it is.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_07: I did happen to notice, though, in Regina's report, Eileen said I said I was there too, so I think she was here.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_07: She beat her goal of 40 minutes today, came in at just a little over 39.
- 1:29:41SPEAKER_07: She had a first mile PR of 1207.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_07: A couple runners asking her about intervals, and she gladly told them about it.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_07: Maybe even convinced a few to try it.
- 1:29:56SPEAKER_07: Again, Eileen Jeff would be proud of you.
- 1:29:59SPEAKER_07: Let's go to Louisville, Kentucky, where Carrie did the heat wave half.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_07: This is an impromptu half.
- 1:30:05SPEAKER_07: Two and a half hour ride to the start meant a 2:30 wake-up.
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_07: Just training for Run Disney, that's all.
- 1:30:12SPEAKER_07: This is a double out and back on a flat course, and she finished first in her age group.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_07: Way to go, Carrie.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_07: Snow cones were refreshing at the finish line.
- 1:30:23SPEAKER_07: A couple of our friends, Brandy and Jennifer, were in Houston for the 10K popsicle dash.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_07: Brandy said that there was a feels-like temperature of 99 degrees at the end.
- 1:30:35SPEAKER_07: So whatever pace you're on, we'll have to do.
- 1:30:38SPEAKER_07: Amen, Brandy.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_07: Miles are always better with friends.
- 1:30:42SPEAKER_07: So I'm glad she and Jennifer got to do that one together.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_07: There was a runway event in Vienna, Ohio, a 5K on the runway.
- 1:30:51SPEAKER_07: MJ did this one for the third time.
- 1:30:56SPEAKER_07: Let's see.
- 1:30:57SPEAKER_07: Foggy, humid, but relatively cool.
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_07: Thinks maybe the course was a little shorter than the 5K, but her official time is a 5K PR, so we're going with that.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_07: Good job, MJ.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_07: Let's go to Concord, North Carolina, where Melody did the street light 5K.
- 1:31:17SPEAKER_07: She's part of a Sunday morning running group in Charlotte.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_07: And on Saturday evenings, several of them took in this race in Concord.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_07: One of her favorite parts of the evening was seeing so many friends from different run clubs along the course.
- 1:31:31SPEAKER_07: She even had a chance to introduce a few runners to Run Walk Run.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_07: Outstanding.
- 1:31:36SPEAKER_07: A big bonus was then Sunday morning when five new friends showed up at the run group in Charlotte.
- 1:31:43SPEAKER_07: That's cool.
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_07: Good job.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_07: Melody.
- 1:31:46SPEAKER_07: Let's move to Sunday.
- 1:31:48SPEAKER_07: The cool summer morning series continues in Claremont.
- 1:31:54SPEAKER_07: Race number two, this 5K.
- 1:31:57SPEAKER_07: Mary Joe said she felt like she jumped in a lake rather than round around it after the race.
- 1:32:03SPEAKER_07: Love the series, though.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_07: Great metal, great atmosphere, great post-race food.
- 1:32:08SPEAKER_07: Today they had hot dogs and watermelon.
- 1:32:11SPEAKER_07: No PR, but about two minutes faster than event number one.
- 1:32:15SPEAKER_07: Our friend Heather rolled this one, and her dad Stuart was there.
- 1:32:18SPEAKER_07: Great to see so many amazing Special Olympic athletes out there kicking butt.
- 1:32:23SPEAKER_07: Apparently they had a triathlon going on in Claremont at the same time.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_07: Now Stuart PR'd and got a second place age group finish.
- 1:32:32SPEAKER_07: Heather got first place wheels in her rolling division.
- 1:32:38SPEAKER_07: Jody was there, lots of goodies and food at the finish line, but they opted to go to the Claremont farmers market for coffee and breakfast afterward while they watched the triathlon.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_07: And Desiree enjoyed the great vibes.
- 1:32:51SPEAKER_07: She's going to be volunteering and running event number three in the cool summer mornings series.
- 1:32:59SPEAKER_07: Nice event up in Utica, New York.
- 1:33:01SPEAKER_07: Several folks there.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_07: I only got one report though.
- 1:33:03SPEAKER_07: The Boilermaker 15K, Steve and his son Justin.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_07: Justin didn't have a lot of training for this one.
- 1:33:10SPEAKER_07: Furthest he had run or raced was four miles before this 15K, which is a little over nine miles.
- 1:33:17SPEAKER_07: But Steve set him up with a short training plan that involved a good deal of walking.
- 1:33:21SPEAKER_07: That's smart.
- 1:33:21SPEAKER_07: Build the endurance.
- 1:33:23SPEAKER_07: They set out with a plan to go easy, did 30-30s, and they finished.
- 1:33:27SPEAKER_07: So Justin's first 15K, of course, was a PR.
- 1:33:32SPEAKER_07: Steve said his was also a record, the slowest 15K he's done, but he didn't care.
- 1:33:38SPEAKER_07: They set out together.
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_07: They finished together, father and son.
- 1:33:42SPEAKER_07: That's great.
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_07: Congratulations, Steve and Justin.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_07: Also at this race, Christopher was there, as were Zach and Todd.
- 1:33:51SPEAKER_07: In the UK.
- 1:33:53SPEAKER_07: Newcastle upon Tyne 10K and half marathon.
- 1:33:59SPEAKER_07: He's got his video up on roller coaster up running.
- 1:34:03SPEAKER_07: And Jamie ran the half.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_07: Also in the UK, the Blackpool Summer 10K.
- 1:34:10SPEAKER_07: Ian, it's hot again in the UK.
- 1:34:12SPEAKER_07: But what a good event they put on in this seaside town of Blackpool.
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_07: There were water stations every two and a half kilometers.
- 1:34:21SPEAKER_07: SPF lotion by the bucket at the start and finish.
- 1:34:25SPEAKER_07: And a closed road, flat course right along the famous promenade.
- 1:34:30SPEAKER_07: This is a seaside resort town.
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_07: It's got an old style amusement park there.
- 1:34:36SPEAKER_07: Kind of neat.
- 1:34:37SPEAKER_07: I looked it up online and some neat pictures there.
- 1:34:40SPEAKER_07: Ian managed to run his fastest 10K time for 10 years.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_07: A shade over 59 minutes.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_07: And congratulations on that.
- 1:34:50SPEAKER_07: We're going to call that a decade PR.
- 1:34:54SPEAKER_07: Regina's back.
- 1:34:55SPEAKER_07: We said she would be.
- 1:34:56SPEAKER_07: She did the watermelon 5K at Eisenhower Park.
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_07: I'm not sure where Eisenhower Park is.
- 1:35:02SPEAKER_07: Someday I'll remember to put all these things in the report.
- 1:35:05SPEAKER_07: Her second race of the weekend, good fun.
- 1:35:07SPEAKER_07: That was probably the most crowded of the three years that she's done this race.
- 1:35:12SPEAKER_07: A nice, easy, flat course through the park, a little slower than the day before, but nicely done, Regina.
- 1:35:20SPEAKER_07: There was a Blue Mountain Run the Vineyards 5K.
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_07: Again, it was somewhere, I'm not sure where the Blue Mountain 5K was.
- 1:35:31SPEAKER_07: Lessa gave us another metal photo after finishing that race.
- 1:35:35SPEAKER_07: That's her second race for the week.
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_07: And last night, Monday, a 5K at Comset State Park on Long Island, New York.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_07: Part of the New York State Park summer running series.
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_07: Megan did it.
- 1:35:51SPEAKER_07: Megan, I hope I didn't butcher the name of that park too badly.
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_07: Fourth year she's been doing this series.
- 1:35:57SPEAKER_07: It's been great each time.
- 1:35:59SPEAKER_07: These are Monday night runs with snacks, drinks, and a few hundred people.
- 1:36:03SPEAKER_07: Great way to spend time outside after work.
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_07: And that, my friends, is the race report for episode 251 of the Rise and Run podcast.
- 1:36:15SPEAKER_07: Friends, and if you run, you know you are our friend.
- 1:36:17SPEAKER_07: Thank you for listening.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_07: We hope you enjoyed this.
- 1:36:19SPEAKER_07: I thought the interview with John was fantastic.
- 1:36:23SPEAKER_07: Hope you had fun listening to it.
- 1:36:25SPEAKER_07: Looking forward to hearing part two next week.
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_07: Stick in there with your training.
- 1:36:31SPEAKER_07: We're really just getting started.
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_07: Have fun till we meet again.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_07: Happy running.
