- 0:00Music. And welcome back to the Boundary
- 0:47Corner Podcast along with my partners Brian Siegel and
- 0:50Jonathan Talley. I am Curtis Wilson in this
- 0:53episode is brought to you by Doctor Jeremy Counts down at the
- 0:57Main Street Pharmacy in Blacksburg.
- 1:00Your friendly neighborhood pharmacy, 301 S Main St.
- 1:04Blacksburg, VA Boys. It's tough for me to say because
- 1:11we've been working on this one for a while to have.
- 1:14This episode? Yeah, for a bit, man.
- 1:17For at least since last spring. In some ways, last spring.
- 1:22In some ways, last spring. But.
- 1:26I don't want to waste any time because we got a lot of
- 1:29questions to ask him. He is a busy young man, an all
- 1:32academic young man. Shout out Kyron making that
- 1:36list, man, but bring him on. I guess tonight your quarterback
- 1:42one Virginia Tech Okies. Kyron.
- 1:43Drones. Kyron, how are you this evening?
- 1:45I'm good. How about y'all?
- 1:49Doing good, man. Doing good.
- 1:50He won. There it is.
- 1:55You funny, Tyler. You, Tyler said it.
- 1:57Tyler said it. He did say it, man.
- 1:58He ain't even lie. Well, Kyra, man, you got to be a
- 2:00you got to be a bad man to to even get number one.
- 2:04Do y'all understand what kind of bullseye puts on you when you
- 2:07get that number one? They ain't talking about what
- 2:10you had in the depth chart when you wear that number one.
- 2:13Hey, you're the dude. That's you the man.
- 2:15So I'm just saying. Go ahead, Curtis.
- 2:18Go ahead, Curtis. Well Kyron, you are the man
- 2:20right now and man, we've got a lot of stuff we want to ask.
- 2:23And again, we appreciate you taking your time.
- 2:28I'm going to throw some up here real quick.
- 2:29That's right, QB one in the house with us and let's just
- 2:33start straight out how winter workouts going for you so far.
- 2:37And we saw yesterday y'all started Hunger Games.
- 2:42How's that going for you as well?
- 2:44Winter workout's been fine before hunger drill started.
- 2:47It was just lifting and running. So that's been like just the
- 2:52normal lifting and running. And then hunger drill started
- 2:54Tuesdays every Tuesday and Thursday.
- 2:55So we back at it tomorrow. But the first day it was, it was
- 2:59good. It wasn't up to coach
- 3:01prostanders, but it was good. It's just a bunch of
- 3:03competition. One on ones, you trying to get a
- 3:06win every time you go it's they tally up the win.
- 3:09So you know, you get the bragging rights every time when
- 3:12you see that. So it's just a good day.
- 3:14Good morning. The competition.
- 3:16You know, having been a coach at one point, there's no way coach
- 3:20is going to let day one be a good day.
- 3:22He he going to have to give you something to grow on him.
- 3:26Yeah, he wasn't really happy on day one, so you got to make that
- 3:29Day 2 the better. That's awesome.
- 3:32That's awesome. Yeah.
- 3:33I mean. Go ahead.
- 3:35How cold do we get in that Beamer barn?
- 3:38Hey, it it it's different. Is we still waiting on the
- 3:41heater? Hopefully we get that by spring
- 3:44ball, so we ain't got to deal with that, but it's way coated
- 3:48in the indoor than it is outside, I can tell.
- 3:50You. Yeah, I hurt.
- 3:51No, no, wait a minute. The coaches aren't sneaking on.
- 3:53Y'all the heaters aren't ready to go.
- 3:55They just ain't cranking them up to give y'all a little harder
- 3:58time in there, are they? I I don't think anybody wouldn't
- 4:01just be coding that. I like hearing that.
- 4:07Yeah, you got you got to have something to to fight, right?
- 4:10They got to make it cold. So you got something to fight.
- 4:12All right, let's let's flip into some football real quick.
- 4:16You know, season started last year, you know, started in the
- 4:21fall. You were #2 on the depth chart.
- 4:22But you kept working, kept your confidence up, got an
- 4:24opportunity. What did you do personally to
- 4:28kind of keep that confidence high during the season when you
- 4:30weren't named the start of this start 2023?
- 4:35I just believed in myself. Basically all I can do.
- 4:39I started sometimes I went to one of our little therapists to
- 4:44like get myself going through just the fall camp.
- 4:47But that was before the decision happened.
- 4:49And I just believed in myself knowing that all I got to do is
- 4:53work hard and my time is going to come and I just believe in
- 4:55God's journey for me. And I knew my time was going to
- 4:59come at some point in the season.
- 5:00I didn't know when it was going to come, but I know when my
- 5:02number was called, I wasn't going to look back.
- 5:04And that's right. That's what happened.
- 5:07Yeah, just know that everybody on this podcast had you at QB 1
- 5:12coming out of spring and and stayed that path the whole way
- 5:15man. So I'm I'm I'm glad you stuck
- 5:17with it and when you got your chance to shine you did big
- 5:20things. I.
- 5:21Appreciate you. Now, another thing I'll say real
- 5:24quick. Go ahead.
- 5:25We were all three in the house when you did get that
- 5:28opportunity at the end of the Purdue game, man.
- 5:31And the way you zip the ball and tally go away.
- 5:35I know you're going. I know you want to talk about
- 5:36that run. Yeah, no man.
- 5:38I mean it. Shoot, he did it.
- 5:39He know what it is. I mean we sitting in there we
- 5:41don't went through a monsoon you know we don't been fighting the
- 5:44elements as well as y'all that snuck down to the sideline.
- 5:49I'm. I think I could have reached out
- 5:50and touch y'all I'm like you know I was put up at the top
- 5:53when it started. So when we get in now I'm like,
- 5:55hey, they got to give my boy a chance Just give them a chance
- 5:58just give them an opportunity. And then I have been hearing all
- 6:01of the, you know, that's the whole another time he ain't
- 6:03ready, he can't throw this and that.
- 6:06You get in, you complete the pass to to the tight end across
- 6:10the middle. Oh, he can throw a little bit.
- 6:13Then you get the run where you break free again.
- 6:16Offense had been moving. You break free, hit the
- 6:19sidelines, he said. No, I don't want to go out of
- 6:22bounds. We got a cornerback.
- 6:24We got a cornerback up here. Let me go ahead and see.
- 6:27Let me go ahead and see how tough he is.
- 6:30Lord just showed him how. How'd that make you feel?
- 6:32I was. It was.
- 6:33It was a good feeling, but I was definitely trying to get out of
- 6:36bounds. He said he was in the way.
- 6:41I was springing straight towards out of bounds though.
- 6:42He just got me last minute, so I had to do something like when I
- 6:46run, I don't want to ever get delivered to hit.
- 6:49So if I know I'm going to get hit, I'm going to deliver it
- 6:51first. Yeah, yeah, I understand.
- 6:53What we loved about that is fans, man.
- 6:55And watching you and being in the, you know, being in the
- 6:57stadium and even feeling it, you know, it wasn't just that you
- 7:01know, you delivered the hit. It was the mentality that we've
- 7:03been missing on this team for a while.
- 7:06It was you know we've been the we've been the nail for a long
- 7:08time and I ain't going to say a long time, but it's been some
- 7:11years before we had that attitude of we can go out and we
- 7:14can deliver those hits. And you know, it wasn't just
- 7:17what you did physically when you, you know what I'm saying,
- 7:20you came with the impact. It was, I think it was Tucker
- 7:23Holloway on the sideline with you like you got up and you kind
- 7:26of start going about your business and you can see him
- 7:28gain some confidence as well. So you know just that mentality
- 7:31man was cool to watch play out. But I mean it kind of take us to
- 7:35our next question watching you do stuff like that and you know
- 7:39even in the spring game when we were in the house they doing
- 7:43this two hand touch thing. You know, you know you get
- 7:46somebody to break free and come and tap you on the back and I'm
- 7:49like that ain't going to take him down.
- 7:51So I guess the question would be like how how many times was you
- 7:55begging them to take that non contact off so they can really
- 7:58see what you can do in practice you?
- 8:00Guys, Coach Pry, ask them all the time.
- 8:03The defense asked me. They they don't want me live
- 8:06because I be talking trash knowing like when I'm working
- 8:09like that's not going to be a tackle and they swear it is.
- 8:12But I hate the two hand touch because sometimes Pride caught a
- 8:15whistle too fast just because you get too close to me.
- 8:18But yeah, I don't like it at all.
- 8:20Sometimes I wish I was just live like before I was QV one right
- 8:24now like everybody know what it is.
- 8:25So if you think you made that tackle, then you made that
- 8:28tackle, but. Protect that man now.
- 8:30We Hey, you want two jerkers now?
- 8:32We needed. We needed you out of it at
- 8:34first, but you want two of them. Everybody knows what it is now.
- 8:37It doesn't matter anymore. Guy, I just love the mentality.
- 8:42As soon as they touch you, I'm sure it's immediately, you know,
- 8:45that ain't a tackle. You know that's not a tackle.
- 8:47You know, I'm not down right here.
- 8:49Come on now. Do you ever just take the ball
- 8:51and move it up like 8 yards and be like coach?
- 8:52He might have brought me down here.
- 8:55He didn't bring me back back here.
- 8:57I'd be tied where I argue with Pride, but most of the time he
- 9:00argue with Pride coach Marr. But most of the time they agree
- 9:02with me, like sometimes they agree, like he know that's not a
- 9:05tackle, but. Like we know.
- 9:07It is what it is. It is.
- 9:09It is all. Right, let's do this, man.
- 9:11What a what a finish to the season.
- 9:14Y'all. Blow the doors off the
- 9:15Cavaliers, Get the Commonwealth Cup, keep it home.
- 9:19Go up to Annapolis where I attended to the Military Bowl.
- 9:23Great performance there in a monsoon of and a monsoon up
- 9:28there. But then between that game and
- 9:32the bowl game, we start seeing the Twitter messages, guys
- 9:35coming back, you know, Jennings coming back, you know your
- 9:39running backs coming back, more wide receivers coming back.
- 9:43And you know we start seeing this and it's like they're
- 9:48taking the step, guys are staying, guys aren't leaving.
- 9:52And what does that say not only about those players, but the
- 9:55coaching staff? And then we won't know.
- 9:58You know, how much of A role did you have in that process?
- 10:01You know how many conversations with, you know, guys like Ollie
- 10:05Jennings, guys like Jay Lane and saying, you know, look what we
- 10:09did, you know, starting here to the end of the season.
- 10:16For them guys to come back at first is to start off with the
- 10:19guys they just know. It's like a brotherhood coming
- 10:22back and they know like we have a chance to be special.
- 10:25Like, like you said, our whole offense came back.
- 10:27So we have a chance to be special to coaches.
- 10:30That mean just they really love our, they really love the
- 10:33coaches. I love the coaches.
- 10:35Everybody love Coach Pride. He like the coolest coach we can
- 10:37meet. But that just says a lot about
- 10:40him and what he the mentality that he brings to the team and
- 10:43what he's trying to build. But my impact with Ali and the
- 10:48rest of the guys, like, I'm real close with the people I
- 10:50transferred with just because we, like, got a group chat and
- 10:52all. But Ali, like, I'm the closer
- 10:54with him because, like, that's basically my roommate.
- 10:56Like we live by ourselves, but we live right next door to each
- 10:59other. But Ali just telling him to come
- 11:03back knowing like he got hurt in the second game.
- 11:04And I know he came to Virginia Tech for a reason.
- 11:07He could have went to the league, but he wanted to prove
- 11:10that he could do it on the biggest stage.
- 11:11And then Jay Lane, Quan Bayshaw, just them coming back, just to
- 11:17be able to do the same thing, do it again.
- 11:20And then like the playoffs, get into 12 teams.
- 11:23You make that playoff, The more you win, the more coaches going
- 11:26to look at you, Coaches look at you.
- 11:28That's a better opportunity for you to get to the league, get to
- 11:30where you want to be. So we get that going.
- 11:33We do. We do.
- 11:33We know we're capable of get to winning games, get to be in that
- 11:36offense that we want to be in there and it's just better looks
- 11:39for everybody. That's I love hearing that.
- 11:44That's awesome. That's that's awesome to hear.
- 11:47Love hearing you kind of stepping up with a leadership
- 11:49role from that perspective and getting guys on board and
- 11:53saying, all right, we got some unfinished business and the
- 11:55better, the better we come back and do it next year, the more
- 11:58that that kind of raises everybody's ship for for the
- 12:00future. Right.
- 12:02Yeah, it's basically a win, win situation for everybody.
- 12:05Virginia Tech win games, you get seen, you get to the goal, you
- 12:08want to be in the league and that's where everybody want to
- 12:10go in college football. So it's a win win situation.
- 12:13Yeah. All right.
- 12:14Poor Tally. Hold on, Tally, real quick.
- 12:17But before before Tally asked this question, we just got to
- 12:20let you know we see them out there hollering at you.
- 12:24I think that's your mom. I know that's your dad right
- 12:26there. So they are they are watching
- 12:29you live tonight. Got to do that.
- 12:32Your your dad's been following us for a while, man.
- 12:34So we we appreciate that Tally. Floor is yours, my friend.
- 12:37Kevin My God, this drones how y'all doing.
- 12:40But yeah, man, so I know they're getting a little technical,
- 12:43asking you some some questions about the team and stuff, and I
- 12:46love that, man. I love the mentality that you
- 12:48that you have being a leader. But I got to, you know, I got to
- 12:51ask the the, the, the fun questions.
- 12:54I think I was the first person. I don't like patting myself on
- 12:56the back too much, but whenever we was watching the game and
- 13:00after the game, I'm like that's the play of the season.
- 13:02When I see you, you make the long touchdown pass against Pitt
- 13:07and it may be like the first one of the game and you running down
- 13:10the field the whole way. I'm talking about all three
- 13:14levels, lineman, linebackers, DVS and you saying something.
- 13:21You ain't got to tell me exactly what you're saying.
- 13:23But I'm just asking kind of what should we go to when something
- 13:27like that happened and we doing a little trash talking like what
- 13:29what, what we need to say Because I'm trying to, you know,
- 13:31I'm going to go back and play a little bit of touch football.
- 13:34So I want to know what I need to say on the field.
- 13:37I ain't going to lie, that's always been me like in the game,
- 13:39just I've always the game just always brings talking out of me.
- 13:43I don't really don't be knowing what I'd be saying.
- 13:45But I know what I said to the D line in that time just because
- 13:49something happened before the game where like he followed me
- 13:52on Instagram before the game and basically just liked some
- 13:55pictures and I just told him to ever do that again.
- 13:58Just like I don't know what you're doing it for because I'm
- 14:00not scared. Like, yeah, it might be whatever
- 14:03start it was, but you ain't going to scare me just by
- 14:05following me. But just being in the game, like
- 14:09people say I might be quiet, which I am kind of quiet off the
- 14:13field, but during the game I I know I've been talking the most
- 14:17out of everybody on any team I've been on.
- 14:20So the game that's. Crazy.
- 14:23That's crazy. But I like it.
- 14:25So this this ain't even on script.
- 14:26I'm going to ask you something, too, to see.
- 14:28I'm an old guy now, so I'm 38. So when I was playing football
- 14:33back in the early 2000s and 2003, like I listen to a lot of
- 14:38Texas music, but it was like screw music.
- 14:41Slim Thug, you know, Mike Jones, Swisher, House TomTom, Fat
- 14:46Bastard, all of them. What kind of music?
- 14:49Like if I want to, if I want to hear some good Texas music right
- 14:51now, who I need to listen to right now.
- 14:58Right now, I'll probably say this dude called Big Ex to plug
- 15:02he out of Dallas. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:04I know who big now ain't that old Kyra, man.
- 15:06I I mean, I got oh. Really.
- 15:08This is like that many Texas people.
- 15:10It's just a big ex to plug. He definitely one of them, but
- 15:12growing up. Yeah.
- 15:13All the screw. Like that's all my dad listened
- 15:15to growing up. So that's his.
- 15:18That's his go to. Bug.
- 15:20Bug. Right now for sure.
- 15:22That's what's up. That's what's up.
- 15:27So we're going to pivot it back to football here a little bit.
- 15:31You know, we we've already mentioned we talked to your pops
- 15:33over the holidays, talked about the relationship forward with
- 15:36Coach Bowen. You know, right when the
- 15:39transfer portal opened last year, how did that relationship
- 15:43play into your role committing to Virginia Tech, and how have
- 15:47you kind of taken over as a leader based on that offense and
- 15:50your relationship with Bowen? The relationship started like
- 15:55basically when he hit me up in the portal and then first day
- 15:58the portal opened, he flew to Waco, had lunch with me and then
- 16:03I was just like, it was a good moment for like a coach to do
- 16:07that. Like the first day of Portal
- 16:08open and that was his main priority.
- 16:10Like he wanted to see me. And then ever since I had lunch
- 16:13with him, it was just like an instant connection.
- 16:15He asked all the right questions, I asked him all the
- 16:17right questions and he gave me straight up answers.
- 16:19That's not, that's all I want from a coach.
- 16:21Just being my second time doing the recruiting process.
- 16:24Like I already know like what what coaches be saying just to
- 16:28get you there. So I didn't want to hear that.
- 16:31And then just what when he told me what he wanted me to do and
- 16:34his offense, like he his vision for me, it just grew me.
- 16:37Like it grew up on me. Like where I wanted to come
- 16:40visit Virginia Tech and then on a visit like, I knew that
- 16:43solidified, especially when they played inner Sandman and they
- 16:47showed me the video because I ain't never seen nothing like
- 16:49that coming from Baylor. Like the atmosphere don't get
- 16:52like that. And I just love playing there.
- 16:55And in my leadership role, I just knew I had to grow.
- 16:58I knew I was a good like leader, like lead by example.
- 17:02I knew I had to grow vocally. So it's just been gradually
- 17:05growing ever since then, especially when I first got my
- 17:09first starting and every week my leadership it grew and then now
- 17:13it's just it's at its peak right now.
- 17:15But I still got a ways to go. All right, I'm going to, I'm
- 17:18going to ask. I'm going to pivot a little bit
- 17:19way. I'm going to ask a fun question,
- 17:21Tally. All right, let's go back.
- 17:23Let's go back. Game one.
- 17:25ODU you you've seen the entrance.
- 17:27You've heard them play it the first time walking from Merriman
- 17:32as you walking behind the North End zone around through the
- 17:35tunnel. What's that feeling like?
- 17:38Because when y'all walking back there, the chance back and
- 17:40forth, the place is starting to rock.
- 17:42What's that feeling like? And then maybe go to the pit
- 17:45game, because when you did first start and you were that QB 1
- 17:48stepping out, what's that feeling like in that tunnel?
- 17:52Yeah, the ODU game, it was cool. But it's like a different
- 17:55feeling when you know like you going out there to start.
- 17:57So like, I know warming up in the game, the the Pit game, I
- 18:02know warming up. Like, I was just waiting to see
- 18:04that Jumbotron where they announced like who QB One is,
- 18:07and then my face pop up and then I smile when that happened and
- 18:11then going back out the tunnel hearing that inner Sandman.
- 18:14When you know you the starter. It's a different feeling.
- 18:17Like, I wouldn't say, I would say it's loud, but like, I kind
- 18:22of like zone everything out. Like I run out, just look at all
- 18:26the stands, like every game is sold out and you can tell like
- 18:29there's no seat empty in there. But it's a crazy feeling.
- 18:32It's a great atmosphere and I enjoy the fans and I'm glad they
- 18:35show out every weekend. Let me ask this since we're
- 18:38doing fun questions. Now I'm going to get one in
- 18:40here. You, you mentioned the
- 18:42atmosphere at Baylor. What?
- 18:44What? What's more crazy, a home
- 18:47playoff game at Shadow Creek or a home game at Baylor?
- 18:51Because I know, I know. I know how crazy they get about
- 18:53high school football down there in Texas.
- 18:56Playoff game at Shadow Creek with it was it was crazy.
- 19:00Yeah, I can imagine it was different.
- 19:02Especially like we went to State and everybody travel to the
- 19:06state game. It's basically a home game.
- 19:08So it's it's special. Texas high school football is
- 19:12special. Yeah, no, we don't watch the
- 19:15What is We don't watch the What's My Friday Night Lights.
- 19:19Yeah, them folks crazy down now. If you're a little bit older,
- 19:23you watch Varsity Blues too so. And I will throw this in for the
- 19:29record too. Kyrie, you ain't got to say
- 19:31much. I'll say it for you, everybody
- 19:33was watching that damn camera when they because we, hey these
- 19:37hokey fans was on edge and when they was like QB one Kyron
- 19:40drones, somebody had took a video of it and that place went
- 19:44crazy. I'm talking crazy.
- 19:46No, hey, no disrespect to nobody else but motherfuckers was
- 19:50sitting on the edge of their seats like who they what they
- 19:53fit to say, you know what I'm saying?
- 19:55We need to know what they fit to say.
- 19:56When they heard that? When they heard Kyron drones.
- 19:58Hey, we was ready to rock then. I was at home.
- 20:02I already knew what it was. I felt good.
- 20:05Yeah, I've seen the video. My teammates be getting on me,
- 20:08telling me when they my video, my name popped up my chance
- 20:12almost be as loud as Coach Pride.
- 20:14So that's good. You deserve it.
- 20:16You work for it. I appreciate the fans for just
- 20:19being there, congratulating me for that.
- 20:23Yeah, we we appreciate you giving us the, the feeling that
- 20:27we get back when you know these guys in here were you know
- 20:3117/18/1920 that the feeling of those teams that we had back
- 20:35then like watching you out there, it's that very same
- 20:38feeling. So we appreciate that about you.
- 20:40You took us back. Man, you you really did what
- 20:44Y'all did. The back half of the season took
- 20:46these guys back. I'm 40, bronze 39, tally's 38.
- 20:50So you do the math. Victoria Tyrod Brian Randall I
- 20:55mean you I'm sure you see those names all the time in in in the
- 20:58sound of that it you took us back last year and.
- 21:01I mean, you know. We went to games like when we
- 21:05were younger. I mean, we were wild, we were
- 21:06crazy, we did stupid stuff. I mean, let's let's you know
- 21:10there's things we've done, but but when you have that feeling
- 21:12and the brain comes back, it's like this is the way it was,
- 21:15this is the way it was, this is the way it should be.
- 21:18And to see you guys, you leading the way with that crew there is
- 21:22great. Brian Shelton is our 4th host.
- 21:26He is on unfortunately on a trip to right now and he cannot join
- 21:30us. But he got with Brian yesterday
- 21:32and he's got a little question about the offense he wants to
- 21:34ask you about. So let's bring that up for
- 21:37Kyron. So Sheldon get his question
- 21:38answered. So, Kyron.
- 21:41Obviously the RPO is a huge element of Tyler Bowen's
- 21:43offense. I wanted to ask how do you feel
- 21:46you progress in terms of being able to make those those reads
- 21:50on the read option, the RPO just making those pre and post snap
- 21:54reads to sort of execute the offense?
- 21:55How much do you feel like you progressed throughout the course
- 21:57of the season with those? I feel like RPOS really came
- 22:02easy to me, just because that's kind of like the same offense I
- 22:05ran in high school. So RPOS has been nothing.
- 22:09It's just knowing like who to read and you can't be wrong,
- 22:13like you got to, you got to always be right.
- 22:16If the person you read and take the runaway, you got a pass and
- 22:19they take, if you doing reads where either I run or they run
- 22:23or the running back runs, it's you can't be wrong during the
- 22:25RPO. So that's why it's so hard to
- 22:27defend just learning from and then Coach Bowen's perspective,
- 22:32the way he teaches it, just him being gone from going to the
- 22:36league, doing it at Penn State, he always brings different
- 22:38elements, different styles of learning and teaching.
- 22:42And then just getting it from him is just it expands your
- 22:47knowledge on not just going based off just one person, just
- 22:50seeing like the whole defense, the whole shell unfold and then
- 22:53just knowing where to go with the football let.
- 22:55Me piggyback off that a little bit real quick.
- 22:57Because one of the things that happened at the kind of
- 22:59beginning of last offseason is that, you know, you came in, you
- 23:03were, you were in winter workouts and all of a sudden,
- 23:06you know Coach Bowen slides into the quarterback.
- 23:09Coach. You know, when when all the
- 23:12shuffling was made with the coaches, what was that like for
- 23:14you? And was that kind of seamless
- 23:16because you know Coach Bowen was your guy to begin with.
- 23:19He he was kind of that that that big reason why you committed to
- 23:22begin with. So what was that like for you?
- 23:25I. Was I was glad that happened?
- 23:28Not. I was glad that coach left and
- 23:31went to Cincinnati. That's a big thing for him.
- 23:33But I was glad top coach Bowen made that move to be the OC.
- 23:37And then from being the OC to the quarterback coach to just, I
- 23:41feel like that's how it should be where the OC is the
- 23:44quarterback coach because he wants to you to like understand
- 23:47the offense, how he sees it. So it's basically like he wants
- 23:50you to be another coach on the field.
- 23:52So just him doing that, I feel like that's what really brought
- 23:55this offense together, just him being in the room and then just
- 23:59us getting that perspective where he sees the offense going
- 24:02and as just us understanding from him.
- 24:06What's, what's? What's Tyler, What's Coach Bowen
- 24:08like? Like, what's his, what's like
- 24:10the sense of humor? Is he dry?
- 24:12Is he just outlandish? Is he, You know, is he quiet?
- 24:16I mean, because he's an offensive lineman, because we
- 24:18see the pictures, like when we see the pictures of him out on
- 24:21recruiting trips, most of the time he's he's head and
- 24:25shoulders above everybody else. So when we're like when they're
- 24:27recruiting offensive lineman, is an offensive lineman as big as
- 24:30he is, it's like, oh, that's a big kid.
- 24:32But what's he like? Yeah he a real big dude but
- 24:36cause boring funny. He he he he'll he not quiet at
- 24:40all he wild with what he say. He say a lot of out out of
- 24:44pocket stuff just out of pocket and just he'll say anything
- 24:49anywhere and out of just you wouldn't expect the stuff he
- 24:52says but he a funny dude and he real fun to be around and that's
- 24:57how I wouldn't want any other coach like that.
- 24:59I don't want to. I don't want to be with any
- 25:01boring coach that don't talk, don't really interact with his
- 25:05players. But he tried to interact with
- 25:07everybody he sees and that's just a big thing.
- 25:09Just for him just to be a coach that really, like, loves his
- 25:13players, interact with his players and then just be that
- 25:16funny coach that always just make somebody laugh every day.
- 25:21That's what's up. That's what's up.
- 25:23So to clarify I can say it, Kyron probably can't.
- 25:26When I was playing, when I was playing ball, we had a coach
- 25:29that he would start like individual drill with some kind
- 25:32of outlandish question. He would say something like for
- 25:36a billion dollars, would you go to Neverland and and sleep in
- 25:38the same bed as Michael Jackson? Like, you know, just stuff like
- 25:42that. And I'm like, how much a bill?
- 25:47Shoot. Hey.
- 25:48I believe I can fight Mike off if I need to, but I'm going for
- 25:51that bill. But anyway, Kyra, we going to
- 25:53go, we going to kind of go to something different besides
- 25:56football, you know, Like I said, we met your pops.
- 25:59I didn't know your mom until, you know, she started tuning in
- 26:03and I kind of met her through your through your pops.
- 26:05I think she was hopping on, hopping on the podcast in the
- 26:08back. And we learned a little bit
- 26:10about your family and how athletic they are, man.
- 26:13You got a brother that was down at Florida State, a sister
- 26:16that's running track. We know your pops are still
- 26:18coaching, and I didn't know your mom ran track as well, right?
- 26:21Yeah. She ran track, but her main
- 26:24thing was softball. Softball.
- 26:25OK, so we we got another letter. So if I had to, if I had $100
- 26:30and we had to, we had a the family reunion, the cookout out
- 26:35of out of everybody in your family, who's the most athletic?
- 26:39Oh man, he said it too quick. He said.
- 26:45No question. Kevin, you got to get it, man.
- 26:48He said it too quick. He didn't get nobody, no room to
- 26:50live. He he didn't even hype anybody
- 26:53else up like, hey, you can he does this well.
- 26:55She does this well, but it's still big my mom got.
- 26:59Stories of how she was I got to see it my dad got to say stories
- 27:04I got to see it D lineman. So I really don't like I can't
- 27:10say he more athletic than me my brother O lineman.
- 27:13I don't. I can't say he more athletic
- 27:15than so you. Got everybody?
- 27:17What about your sister? She running, right?
- 27:19Nah, she threw. So oh, OK.
- 27:23So throwing. Is not really.
- 27:24I mean, it's just throwing oh. OK, hold on, hold on.
- 27:28Hold on. OK, before, before you answer
- 27:30this question, let me just go ahead because Mama's out here.
- 27:34She says she's next. Does Mama.
- 27:37Win the silver medal of the Drones Family Olympics or is it
- 27:40somebody else? Remember, she's.
- 27:42I'm gonna. I'm gonna put it back up here so
- 27:43you can see. I want you.
- 27:44Don't ask when. You go back home, I'm.
- 27:45I'm gonna go. It's a trap.
- 27:49She might. She might be.
- 27:51There she might. We'll tell.
- 27:53You that you smart man. By the way, just if you're
- 27:56wondering, Missus drones played the hot corner and in the hole
- 28:00there shortstop. Nice.
- 28:01That's. What's?
- 28:03Up there we. Go there we.
- 28:05Go what up? Can I ask question sister?
- 28:07Does she throw shot foot or hammer or disk?
- 28:10She throw shot. In disk got this OK.
- 28:12Yeah, I'm. Surprised.
- 28:14They're watching right now. She, she playing right now.
- 28:16She got a basketball game right now.
- 28:20Yeah, I don't know. You so you you the more you got
- 28:22one eye on the. Game one eye on the but the
- 28:24more. You talking, you giving us so
- 28:25much stuff than everybody else doing Kyra?
- 28:27I don't know, man, because she playing basketball and throwing,
- 28:30she might give you buckets. I was on.
- 28:34Varsity basketball Before I was on varsity football.
- 28:36OK, my bad, OK. Kelly said.
- 28:40I will take a seat, then hang on, hold on, Wait A. 2nd just so
- 28:43you know. Yep, they at the game watching
- 28:46and they watching you all here with us and we love that's.
- 28:49Love right there, Jerome's family.
- 28:50Out in Texas, Brian, I know we get near the end.
- 28:53We know Kyron, we know you've got, we know you got to be up
- 28:57early tomorrow. So we got just a couple more fun
- 28:59questions to ask here before we drop it.
- 29:02Yeah, I mean, we got. To go to any time we get a
- 29:05player, we get a coach on here, we got to know what's your go to
- 29:07food spot in the bird. Go to a lot of people say.
- 29:13I would say PKS, PKS. Yeah, we go.
- 29:17We go to PKS a lot and it's either like PKS or Kabuki you
- 29:22you own. Them cheetah wings, yeah.
- 29:24They own them good. I just told my dad said next
- 29:28time he open, you got to try. He never had it before.
- 29:30But yeah, that was good right there.
- 29:32And then Kevin? Tripping.
- 29:33I thought all black folks had lemon pepper wings with mile on
- 29:36it. I don't think he.
- 29:38Know what That's what cheetah wings are.
- 29:39He just heard. Cheetah wings, he just heard.
- 29:41Yeah, Coach Cheetah. Coach Cheetah just threw his
- 29:43name on something but we going to let him have that there.
- 29:45We will let him call that Cheetah wings.
- 29:47But hey, that's that's a that's a staple right there.
- 29:50Yeah. It definitely is.
- 29:52A staple. So Kyron, just real quick before
- 29:54you before we let you get out of here, what time do you have to
- 29:57get up in the morning? Because obviously, I mean, are
- 29:59you living off campus, we assume, Yeah, it's like. 8
- 30:04minutes away. All right, what time?
- 30:05You got to be up in the morning to get I get up at. 4:45.
- 30:11I haven't seen. That in a minute my dog wants to
- 30:14be up at. 445 man, kudos to you man.
- 30:17Tuesdays and Thursday. Though I get about 4:45.
- 30:19OK, Tuesday. Thursday.
- 30:21Cigla. Tally, I've got anything else
- 30:23before we wrap it up with this young man.
- 30:25I'm just going. To say I appreciate the time,
- 30:27man, it's been, it's been a pleasure and looking forward to
- 30:29seeing what you guys have for us, you know, come spring and
- 30:32fall this year. Yeah, it was fun.
- 30:33I. Appreciate y'all having me
- 30:35definitely. Man, we appreciate you coming
- 30:36through again, man. Big appreciation for you talking
- 30:39to me about my son, your attention to detail, man,
- 30:42Everything that you're doing with the team on and off the
- 30:45field, us as fans, it's it's wonderful to see.
- 30:49And I mean the grades, all of that.
- 30:52Keep doing it, man. Just keep doing what you're
- 30:54doing. That's I appreciate it.
- 30:57Yes, Sir. You have a good night.
- 30:59I appreciate. Having you, man, take care of
- 31:00yourself. I know Brian will see you in
- 31:03spring. Tally might see you in spring.
- 31:04I'm trying to see you in the spring.
- 31:05So you take care of yourself. Keep doing what you're doing.
- 31:08Keep your head up. Because man, your future is so
- 31:12bright ahead. And we, we, we appreciate you
- 31:14taking 30 minutes out of your day because we know you were a
- 31:17busy young man. Yeah, that's all I love.
- 31:19I appreciate all of you. Thank you, Sir.
- 31:21Appreciate you. Thank.
- 31:23You man. Awesome.
- 31:29Boys, that's pretty good, man. Sure, we can hit it right there.
- 31:31That's a good night. We all cut it.
- 31:35Here we're going to all get up at 4:45 and we going to go.
- 31:38I'm going to sit outside and and call Brian and see if he's
- 31:41working out. He's doing all the game.
- 31:45Listen, the dog wakes me up about 4:45 at least three days a
- 31:48week. So I'm doing it and I try to
- 31:50trudge back to bed. But I mean, y'all he He chatted
- 31:54with us a few minutes beforehand, and he did ask
- 31:56directly about Tally Sun. If y'all don't get Tally Sun
- 31:59guys like I mean. He is an.
- 32:02Outstanding young man. You can tell it.
- 32:03You can tell it by how he speaks.
- 32:07He very thorough, very thoughtful.
- 32:10He's funny. He's funny.
- 32:12I mean, he's one of those you feel like you could just sit and
- 32:15talk with him at a bar or at the field about anything.
- 32:19And a lot of guys aren't like that.
- 32:21And you can tell he's very genuine.
- 32:23Young man. Miss Miss Drones.
- 32:26Mr. Drones. I know y'all are out there
- 32:28watching tonight. Y'all raised a very good young
- 32:30man in his shows in every way. Boys, awesome young man.
- 32:36We got a lot. More to unload?
- 32:39Yeah, we do. We got a lot to.
- 32:40Unload in this. So let's hit it up because
- 32:44basketball season's going on and well Saturday the Hokies had one
- 32:50of those games that make you want to throw things and
- 32:54Sheldon's not with us. But we asked Sheldon some
- 32:56questions and Sheldon had some things he want to broke down.
- 32:59Brian and him got together for a few minutes yesterday And Brian,
- 33:02let's kick it off because we did talk about that loss or Shelton
- 33:05did talk about that loss and where we stand.
- 33:07So let's hit that up first about.
- 33:10Do we even have a? Chance to make the tournament.
- 33:13Here we go. So after the.
- 33:15Loss to Miami Without winning the ACC Tournament, what are the
- 33:19chances the Hokies get into March Madness this year?
- 33:23Unfortunately, the chances are not looking great right now.
- 33:26So we have There's a stats website called Bart Torvick that
- 33:30does NCAA tournament simulators. So you run a bunch of
- 33:34simulations and it spits out a percentage chance to make the
- 33:36tournament. Right now the Hokies have a
- 33:3823.3% chance to make the tournament as I last checked it,
- 33:43and that includes 4% chance for an automatic bid if they win, if
- 33:46they win the ACC tournament and a 19% chance for an at large
- 33:49bid. So I think for me you're looking
- 33:51more at that at large bid because I think it's it's, you
- 33:53know, pretty unlikely that you'd win the ACC, you know, a second
- 33:55time in three years. But you know, bottom line, A1 in
- 33:59five chance right now for the Hokies.
- 34:01They certainly have the work cut out for them in this final
- 34:02stretch. I mean.
- 34:09I think before it was something what 3334% chance before we lost
- 34:15that game and that game was frustrating Saturday, that game
- 34:19was frustrating Saturday afternoon to watch because I
- 34:23went to a birthday party. We're up 9, I'm keeping we still
- 34:26up 9, and me and one of the the dads there just get chatting
- 34:29about something else and I ain't paying attention to my phone
- 34:31talk 10 minutes, I go look back at the phone and they got four.
- 34:34It's like. This team is.
- 34:40I mean it. It's it's frustrating to watch.
- 34:43I know Sheldon had probably a little bit more to say on that
- 34:45Miami game, too. So we can run that, Let him
- 34:48finish that thing out. Yeah, let's finish.
- 34:50It out and with that. Loss to Miami, it looks like
- 34:52that percentage dropped pretty sharply.
- 34:54I think they, if I remember correctly seeing something about
- 34:57right at 5050 ahead of that game.
- 35:00So it seems like that was a kind of a a, a winner stay home type
- 35:04situation. For the Hokies, it was, yes.
- 35:07And again, it depends on the model you look at.
- 35:08Some of them were a little bit more bullish.
- 35:10Some of them were not so rosy on Hokies chances.
- 35:12I mean I saw some at 33% before the Miami game.
- 35:15But Needless to say, I mean that was a rogue game against a quad
- 35:18one team and the fact that the Hokies LED slip play was pretty
- 35:22pretty, you know, pretty devastating.
- 35:24I mean that that game had a huge delta in terms of you know, what
- 35:27it would have done for them had they had they won the game
- 35:29versus you know, them losing it in terms of their their
- 35:31probability to make the tournament so big missed
- 35:33opportunity for sure. That says it all.
- 35:38Man, I mean you know when you when you when you look at the
- 35:41the chances there that was a game that.
- 35:44For all intents and. Purposes was kind of a must win
- 35:46if the Hokies wanted to get into the tournament without having to
- 35:49run the table in the ACC Tournament.
- 35:52Yeah, I. Mean.
- 35:55It's frustrating. Frustrating to talk about and
- 35:57watch and think about when you start digging into it a little
- 36:01bit and looking at the game. I mean, handling pressure is
- 36:05usually tough when you play the teams that are physical, it's
- 36:09pressuring you coming down the floor.
- 36:10It's tough. We're turning it over.
- 36:13We're living in, dying by the three, you know, and we just
- 36:16don't have enough guys that can create their own shot in
- 36:20basketball. That's the name of the game, you
- 36:22know? That's what kind of worried me
- 36:23before the season when you have smaller guards, no disrespect to
- 36:29Medula and and Couture and any of those guys that's playing,
- 36:34but you know, you play against some bigger guards that some of
- 36:37the ACC has to offer and just getting physical on you and it's
- 36:41hard to create your shot. That's why when you, when you
- 36:44get some of these guys that have left, like, you know, Rodney
- 36:48Rice and Buchanan and Darius Maddux, some of these, you know,
- 36:53bigger guards like it, it's frustrating because those guys
- 36:56you feel like could help in those situations where you where
- 37:00you need somebody that can create a shot or even just shoot
- 37:03over somebody because they're taller.
- 37:05So that's what it feels like kind of watching it to me.
- 37:09Yeah. And.
- 37:09Now Sheldon went in, You and Brian.
- 37:11Brian, you and Sheldon went in a little deeper because I I want
- 37:15to know because as I'm watching the game and sometimes y'all
- 37:18know as well as I do, we get pulled away times whether it be
- 37:22a kids hoops game or birthday parties or hey run to the store
- 37:26need to get something and you're trying to follow it on your
- 37:28phone. Can I ask Sheldon?
- 37:30I wanted Sheldon to talk about what metric do we need to watch?
- 37:33Because when I do get pulled away to go to a birthday party
- 37:36on Saturday when we playing at 2:00.
- 37:38What? What's?
- 37:39What data point do I need to watch them?
- 37:41I see it going a certain direction.
- 37:42What is it? So let's let's hear what he's
- 37:44found out through his research. Yeah, and this Hokies.
- 37:47Team has kind of been a little, a little up and down.
- 37:50They've had some games where they've looked looked better.
- 37:52They've had some games where they just can't really put out
- 37:54all the pieces together. Is there a metric that's kind of
- 37:58proving to be most predictive for a Hokies win or a Hokies
- 38:01loss? Well, I mean.
- 38:03Generally speaking in basketball, obviously shooting
- 38:05is the name of the game, right. So you got to hit a, you got to
- 38:08hit a good field goal percentage if you want to win.
- 38:10And you know you can look at effective field goal percentage,
- 38:12which is obviously a very big predictor of who wins the game.
- 38:14I mean that's probably the single biggest predictor on a
- 38:16night by night basis. But I thought that looking at
- 38:19turnover percentage, turnovers in general for the Hokies have
- 38:21been sort of a bugaboo this year and that seems to me to be the
- 38:25biggest predictor of whether or not they win the game.
- 38:28So when Tech has a a turnover percentage lower than 17%, they
- 38:33are 10 and three and what it is over 17% there are three and
- 38:37six. So to me that kind of speaks to
- 38:39their issues. If they limit the turnovers to,
- 38:42you know, say 1213 less than that, that's about, you know,
- 38:45that translates to about 17% and a 70 possession game.
- 38:49That's probably the ideal spot. But they just, they just haven't
- 38:51been really taking care of the ball in these past few weeks in
- 38:54ACC play and that's really been the biggest thing hurting them.
- 38:57They're like in a crunch. Time of of the Miami game and
- 38:59you have kind of three or four possessions back-to-back where
- 39:02there's turnovers and you go from a nine point lead to a, you
- 39:05know, three or four point deficit pretty quick.
- 39:08That's really been the thing that's been been killing,
- 39:10killing them, you say? Right.
- 39:12And The funny thing is they've actually shot the lights out of
- 39:14the ball. You know, if if you look at
- 39:16their shooting sets and ACC play, I mean, they're pretty
- 39:18much the best in the conference. But the problem is, you know,
- 39:20they're turning the ball over and they're not getting
- 39:22offensive rebounds. So those two things, you know,
- 39:24they're they're losing that. They're losing out in those
- 39:27extra possessions. And so you know you can shoot
- 39:29the ball as well as you can, but if you're not, if you're not
- 39:32getting those extra possessions and the other team is, it's not,
- 39:35it's not going to go well for you.
- 39:40Name of the game? Turnovers.
- 39:42But it's. Wild.
- 39:44But it's wild, though. Could you all imagine what this
- 39:46team would be like if they weren't the best shooting team
- 39:48in the ACC? You imagine that.
- 39:52What, like, nine wins, maybe? Yeah.
- 39:54Conversely, if you know they didn't turn the ball over at
- 39:56such a rate, you know where would they be as well as they're
- 39:59shooting. So it's like you know if you if
- 40:02you if you have one other guy out there that can handle the
- 40:05ball a little bit more. Lean on them at times when you
- 40:09know you're getting that pressure.
- 40:11A guy like Padula does not have to kind of be a ball stopping
- 40:16point guard at times when the scoring just isn't quite coming
- 40:20as as as at the rate that we need to because we're not
- 40:22getting those X possessions with offensive rebounds, we're losing
- 40:25X possessions with them getting offensive rebounds.
- 40:30Yep. So we hit one last piece here
- 40:32with Shell because we kind of wanted to know who's the pivot
- 40:35player, who's the player? So we now we now we know, right,
- 40:40if we start looking at a 70 possession game, if we're aiming
- 40:43towards trying to do the math here, what, 141415 turnovers in
- 40:48a 70 possession game, we ain't going to win the game.
- 40:52But we taught and wanted Sheldon to say who's the player that
- 40:56effectively if they have a game, we have a chance to win.
- 40:59So he hit that up too, All right.
- 41:02Let's switch it over to this. Is there a player on this team
- 41:06that's kind of that pivot type player where if they play kind
- 41:08of above their average, it's more than likely gonna lead to a
- 41:11Hokies win? Or if they're below that
- 41:12average, go ahead and put AL on the board.
- 41:16Yeah. So for this question, I
- 41:17initially thought about Sean Padula, just because he's been
- 41:19such a high usage guy for the Hokies.
- 41:21I mean if you look at the statistics, there are very few
- 41:25teams in the country that are more reliant on their point
- 41:28guard than the Hokies are and Pedulas had to, you know, bear a
- 41:31really huge load this season. But with that being said,
- 41:33looking at the stats, I actually think Glenn Kidd is a his.
- 41:37His performance in the games is a much bigger indicator of
- 41:40whether or not the Hokies win or lose.
- 41:41So just looking at you know his his offensive rating here I mean
- 41:44he was really good against my against Miami in that game a few
- 41:47weeks ago you know going a for a from the field and he's always
- 41:50had a good field goal percentage.
- 41:52But you know typically you know the the more effective he is and
- 41:54and the more shots he takes during a game because he's such
- 41:57a good shooter and he takes shots at that fit his game.
- 42:00You know that's that's going to help focus win when he's not off
- 42:03or excuse me when I shouldn't say he's off and he's not
- 42:06hitting shots that's a big that's a really bad sign because
- 42:09I think you know he's he's been the presence down low obviously
- 42:13and we we when you're not getting production from from
- 42:15that five spot in the Mike Young offense and obviously Malaysia
- 42:18potee he's not offensive really isn't quite his game.
- 42:20That's going to be a problem because now you know you don't
- 42:23have the spacing and you got to you know force yourself to shoot
- 42:26threes and that hurts you all around.
- 42:27So I think Len Kidd is probably the biggest, you know, guy where
- 42:31you say as as he goes, so go the Hokies.
- 42:35All right, so he's kind of The X Factor with with for this team
- 42:40and it makes sense. Because if you all remember what
- 42:42the early part of ACC play, he struggled.
- 42:45And as did Virginia. Tech struggling out of the gate
- 42:48with that back in January, you know, like the loss at Florida
- 42:53State, I don't think he had a good game there.
- 42:55Definitely the Wake Forest game. I know he struggled down there
- 42:58and it's, you know, I mean, you look at what's left on the
- 43:03schedule for this team right now.
- 43:05I mean they got a they got Notre Dame this weekend.
- 43:09If they don't beat Notre Dame, that 20% is going to go to like
- 43:125 because you cannot have that bad a loss.
- 43:15Then you got Florida State and North Carolina.
- 43:19Virginia. Pitt.
- 43:20Syracuse. Wake Forest, Louisville.
- 43:23Notre Dame. There's like.
- 43:25A. They can't.
- 43:27Lose any of the bad ones. They can't lose either Notre
- 43:29Dames or Louisville's. It's.
- 43:31Almost like they got to just run, right?
- 43:33Yeah. For.
- 43:34Real. You got to just run if.
- 43:35You want if you want to. If you want at large, you got to
- 43:37run table. Yep.
- 43:40Pretty much. Yeah, I.
- 43:41Mean. It's grim.
- 43:43It's grim to think about. It's grim to do right now, man.
- 43:45Like you got to win it. You got to win the ACC, or like
- 43:48you said, pretty much got to run the table.
- 43:50They have a better. Chance of running the table than
- 43:52they do winning the ACC, yes. But do.
- 43:56You know why? It's grim.
- 43:57It's because you look and you see there's some talent on this
- 43:59team, right? Like you see, like Tal, you
- 44:01mentioned it. It is literally one player way.
- 44:04If they had, if Rodney Rice was still here or one of those guys
- 44:09who transferred, they could get their own shot occasionally.
- 44:14I'm not saying like a top 15 team, but I think definitely a
- 44:17top 35 team and easily in and that's where it's getting
- 44:21frustrating where people leave. You know what, you got the kid
- 44:24that went to Mason's playing good Bamasil.
- 44:27Bamasil's been all over the place.
- 44:28I don't know if he's a good boy because.
- 44:31I had kids. Made a cross country journey of
- 44:33a college career. But you mentioned Buchanan early
- 44:36and you made them Maddox and you know, and even somebody like
- 44:39Naheem Allen that that played a pivotal role in Uconn's
- 44:42championship last year. He didn't score all the points,
- 44:44but he was still a pivotal role so.
- 44:47I don't know. I don't.
- 44:49Know and I I think the problem. We're looking at is that you
- 44:52know? From a.
- 44:54Offensive mind perspective and just from an overall coaching
- 44:56perspective, I think Mike Young is doing a damn good job.
- 44:59I think the problem is that we have had a problem bringing in
- 45:04and retaining good talent. And at some?
- 45:08Point you know the guys that he brought in when he first got
- 45:11here, they jailed really quick in that first year when it
- 45:14didn't matter what the number on the left hand side of the the
- 45:17win loss was was going to be. You know, everybody knew that
- 45:20that was going to be a struggle bust of a season to a point but
- 45:23they jailed, you know year two and three.
- 45:27You know, you see some action right, with with those guys
- 45:31gelling maturing, getting into the back half of their career
- 45:34and now we're starting to see with all that attrition and kind
- 45:37of that churn of the roster that we're seeing every year, you're
- 45:41not getting that cohesive team that we've seen before.
- 45:46And I think you know, the right situation is kind of a microcosm
- 45:50of that. Bigger picture is that you know
- 45:53if if you had one guy like that they could give you those
- 45:56minutes that can handle the ball in those key moments that could
- 45:59take a three but also get his own shot.
- 46:01If you had something like that, you know this team might be, you
- 46:05know, 3-4 five wins better and really on the on the inside
- 46:09instead of having to scratch and claw just to even have a chance.
- 46:13I don't know. My Co host just said Microcosm,
- 46:17I think is the word that he used.
- 46:19I don't know what the fuck that means, but I do know Mike Young,
- 46:25you better go out and you better get some people who can dunk on
- 46:27folks. You better go out and you better
- 46:30get some people who can jump hide in the other team because
- 46:32we just shooting threes and it ain't happened.
- 46:35It ain't going to get us what we need to be tally, Tally.
- 46:39You've been nice to Mike Young the year you've been with us and
- 46:42you said you give him a little grace.
- 46:43But I I think the grace is slowly falling off.
- 46:46I. Told y'all.
- 46:47I mean, him winning the ACC was. Like so I guess it was.
- 46:51Big because I I didn't expect it.
- 46:53You know, when he first got here, I was on him pretty heavy
- 46:56and you know, I said well, I got to give him some time and I got
- 46:59to. But you know again, when you got
- 47:03a coach like Mike Young, you know you got to have some people
- 47:06around you that can recruit and we start getting people in and
- 47:09then those coaches start leaving and we start getting players in
- 47:12because basketball is much different than football in a lot
- 47:15of ways. When we talking, recruiting when
- 47:17we're talking. Retaining.
- 47:19People, I mean you can really go out and get one player in in
- 47:25basketball and the whole team changes like it it it 11 player
- 47:32can make that team a deep run NCAA team, you know?
- 47:40But if. You can't.
- 47:41If you are not getting those people or if they're not getting
- 47:44chances or you're not, you know, able to retain them, shit you,
- 47:48you're not going, you're not going to go deep, you know,
- 47:51because I was a, hey man, I don't care about the regular
- 47:52season, I don't care about this. We got to get to the tournament.
- 47:55We got to win a game in the tournament, you know, things
- 47:57like that is what I was saying. So I gave them a little bit of a
- 48:00pass. And then looking at this season,
- 48:02it's been, it's been kind of, you know, getting back to it and
- 48:05I've been kind of quiet, but it's a it's starting to creep
- 48:08back up, man. Basketball is a different beast,
- 48:10man. We got to get some, we got to
- 48:12get some athletic players. Not saying the guys on the team
- 48:14aren't athletic, but we're getting a lot of shooters.
- 48:18We're getting a lot of, you know, three and D guys.
- 48:21No, man, you got to get some fucking animals.
- 48:24You got to get some people who are certified bucket getters.
- 48:29That's what we need and and if we.
- 48:31Had just been able to, I mean I know that's a different
- 48:33situation but we talked, we've already talked about Rodney
- 48:36Rice. If you get Rodney Rice and
- 48:37you're able to you know get somebody like Basili back on
- 48:40this team and that that's a that's a true you know top four,
- 48:46top three ACC team compared to like you know we're we're kind
- 48:51of in that bottom half of the top ten right now and and you
- 48:55know scratching scratching to go further back.
- 48:58Even to think. About, Yeah, even to think about
- 49:00like Basili, like he came in, you know, had a good year and
- 49:04then he's never heard of again. Like he said, oh fuck it, I'm
- 49:07going to Italy or wherever he went.
- 49:08You know what I'm saying? Like, I don't know the money
- 49:11situations or you know how they handle it, what Nil looks like
- 49:15in in in basketball. But they got to change some
- 49:18things if they want to start making, making these runs
- 49:20because the old school game of any sport is gone.
- 49:24Yeah, you just can't play the game like that.
- 49:26You can't coach the game like that.
- 49:28It's much different. So again, I'm still giving Mike
- 49:32Young a little grace because of what he's done, but it's getting
- 49:36shot, It's getting real shot and.
- 49:39Especially now. Football's doing good.
- 49:41You want everybody do good, like everybody's do good.
- 49:43I will say this. Though I will say this on tape,
- 49:45I'll fucking sacrifice basketball all day tomorrow.
- 49:50If we can goddamn have a good football team, Give me a good
- 49:54football team every year. I ain't saying shit about
- 49:56basketball. I didn't let me get one of them
- 49:58baseball jerseys because baseball been killed.
- 50:00Them fucking baseball jerseys is nice.
- 50:02So give me a baseball jersey. Give me jerseys.
- 50:05A good football. Team.
- 50:06Shit, we good. There we go.
- 50:08But I say I don't care about y'all basketball.
- 50:09Y'all got to do better too. He loves you.
- 50:12Yeah. Different child.
- 50:15Different child. All right, let's roll over this,
- 50:17boys. Let's get back to football for a
- 50:18little while the rest of the way.
- 50:20Believe it or not, y'all know what today was.
- 50:23What's the day? What's?
- 50:24The best. Don't nobody even care.
- 50:26About it no more, nobody don't care anymore.
- 50:28About it because everything happened December, I remember.
- 50:30Forgot all about. It 10 years ago.
- 50:32I used to take off half a day to watch what was going on real.
- 50:36That's a little. Joke.
- 50:37You just take. Off.
- 50:38Had a had a computer up had a TV on ESP on your phone.
- 50:42Now you trying to watch. You trying to watch the the,
- 50:45the, the, the, the Texas or the the facts come in.
- 50:50I don't even care no more. We're doing this in December.
- 50:53Yeah, it's all December. Now they should move back to
- 50:56February though. That's my opinion.
- 50:57But let's let's talk about a few things that happened.
- 50:59The 1st that happened is we got a preferred walk on offer.
- 51:02Usually that ain't a big deal, is it not?
- 51:05Usually. Not usually, but.
- 51:07Then we got the name. His name is Lamar, goes by LJ
- 51:11Booker. He is a six, 290 LB wide
- 51:14receiver right here in the RVA, down at Collegiate, about 3
- 51:17miles from my house here. He is a.
- 51:20Top 30 player in Virginia. He's a top 1000 player.
- 51:24His composite is dead on the air at 87.
- 51:29He's got offers, Duke, Rutgers. He had some interest from Penn
- 51:33State. He had some interest from
- 51:35Maryland, North Carolina. Y'all, can we talk?
- 51:39Real quick, I I, I hate throwing the old regime under the bus,
- 51:43but you know how many people we gave scholarships to outside of
- 51:46the top 1000? A lot.
- 51:48Everybody. And we got a.
- 51:51Preferred Walk on inside the Top, 1000.
- 51:55Yeah. Crazy walk on.
- 51:58It's crazy. He could have went.
- 52:00To a number of schools and got on a scholarship and and and you
- 52:04we said it a few weeks ago somebody said it.
- 52:07You talk about winning the state of Virginia.
- 52:10This is how you do it right here.
- 52:13Not even a. Joke about it.
- 52:16So I know. Glad to have him.
- 52:19I guess he'll be joining in the spring.
- 52:20But while to see LJ Booker, I don't think Brian had a chance
- 52:25to get some tape on him because we've both been busy at work.
- 52:28But maybe try to look at it something here, just because I
- 52:31always. I always refer to Chris.
- 52:33Chris is in the in the comments and of course y'all know, you
- 52:37know, that's Brody's dad, Keelan Adams dad.
- 52:41Chris said he can play, which I've seen a little tape on him
- 52:43because we were recruiting him during the season.
- 52:46And if Chris says he can play him being there in Virginia and
- 52:49he's watching wide receivers and he watches a lot of tape, I'll
- 52:52take his word for it. We.
- 52:54Know we know he's watching wide receiver tape.
- 52:58By the way, Robbie going to throw a joke on here at you
- 53:01Tally say you need to get a wrestling singlet but.
- 53:04You know what actually we going to do a little talking on some
- 53:07wrestling, man. I got, I got somebody we're
- 53:09going to bring on. We're going to do a little
- 53:10talking on some wrestling because I don't know about
- 53:11wrestling, but I want to know and I want us to win.
- 53:14If we can get some wins in wrestling, I'll take it.
- 53:16So we going to save that for another time, but we going to
- 53:19talk a little wrestling. That's a teaser.
- 53:21That's a teaser about a month from now.
- 53:23Pay attention. Pay.
- 53:24Attention. All right, so let's go real
- 53:26quick. Where did we end up as a class?
- 53:28So I mean the numbers don't look great 45 and 57.
- 53:32Can I go on a tangent? Right, quick, before you even
- 53:34talk numbers. Go on, let me say this right
- 53:36quick. Hold on.
- 53:38I want to put my glasses on. Oh, man.
- 53:40That's why. I talk he getting serious here
- 53:41we're. Going to have Mateo on here a
- 53:44little bit later on, right? Oh yeah, not a month.
- 53:47Yeah, we love you, Mateo. A little less than a month.
- 53:49From now, we love you, Mateo. But close your ears.
- 53:52That fucking ranking system man has got to go.
- 53:55It's on my fucking nerves. It's nothing, but they lie it.
- 53:59It's I I went to a basketball game the other day and we got a
- 54:04kid that was here in school, went to the high school my son
- 54:08will go to and his dad, he he he plays down at UAB now.
- 54:12He's a sophomore at UAB and he probably was the best kid.
- 54:17He was probably the best kid in Huntsville when he graduated 2
- 54:20years ago. But he definitely was, you know,
- 54:22one of the top players in in Alabama and the ranking systems
- 54:27man is just so screwed up. And he talked to me, he gave me
- 54:31like maybe a 30 minute rundown of how you get your kid ranked
- 54:36the highest and it's all bullshit.
- 54:38It's just going to the right camp and kissing the right ass
- 54:43and fucking rubbing the right feet, man.
- 54:45If a kid can play, fucking let him play.
- 54:48That is so much bull crap to take somebody star or you know,
- 54:53oh he he, he he ain't as tall as this guy.
- 54:55He ain't as big as this or his competition.
- 54:57Like if he's if you setting records and you playing in
- 55:01decent competition. You know what I'm saying?
- 55:03And I understand you got to do some camps, but it's all about
- 55:06just gaining us more money and more subscriptions and more of
- 55:10this instead of actually watching what these kids do.
- 55:13And again we say it all the time.
- 55:16Somebody commits somewhere, they messing with some rankings
- 55:20either way it goes. You commit to Alabama, you're
- 55:2390, you commit to Virginia Tech, What are you Brian?
- 55:26What number are you 87? 80. 8687, they're gonna move
- 55:30this up a little bit. I mean, dude, it it's just
- 55:33ridiculous, man, when you start thinking about how they do these
- 55:36rankings. And we'll come back to it maybe
- 55:39next week because we got some stuff in the works and we want
- 55:43to let it play out. Yeah, we do.
- 55:44But if some of these kids, I'm like, how does he have no
- 55:47ranking? How does he have that ranking?
- 55:49He's better than this guy. He beat this guy or he locked it
- 55:53anyway. Curtis, go ahead.
- 55:55We got. You know we we've been talking
- 55:58about that for a while now and I mean Robbie, we had him on one
- 56:02time. We talked to him about all the
- 56:03camps and you know when when he was doing evaluations at the
- 56:07camps and things like that. And you know he backed up a lot
- 56:10of what you just said in a lot of ways.
- 56:14So it it's funny circling back like that.
- 56:23Oh, that was good, Jim. That was good, so.
- 56:25So where we are? As far as like nationally goes,
- 56:29if you look at just the the raw number data, we didn't do good
- 56:3245 and 57, like 10th in the ACC. But that ain't the important
- 56:38part right now because the important part is where we rank
- 56:43both nationally and in the ACC. When it comes to the average of
- 56:47the player, we only took sixteen players.
- 56:50There are not a lot of teams in the country that took that
- 56:54little of a player this year. Most of them are 20.
- 56:57To 22, that's that's that's your average 20.
- 56:59Two, we're we're way down at 16. So you start looking at the
- 57:02actual average is where it gets key.
- 57:05Y'all know we rank average player wise because we got some
- 57:07players that got some balls because I think tally had some
- 57:10influence somehow on 2. Players.
- 57:12Got. Build up to four stars, guys.
- 57:17Next thing we know. We don't talking.
- 57:18Next thing we know four guys get bumped up.
- 57:20Y'all, we are 28th in the country as far as average player
- 57:24goes, 4th in the ACC over the 88, which that's Bronze magic
- 57:29number he's told y'all for the last four years.
- 57:31He's been preaching that for years, though.
- 57:34He's been preaching that for years.
- 57:36So you know, you sit. Here, and you wonder and and
- 57:39y'all know we got Sheldon. Sheldon's got all sorts of
- 57:42things. He looks at things that interest
- 57:44him and pique him. But I wanted to know, all right,
- 57:48where are the playoff teams at? Like, where are their rankings?
- 57:50Don't think Sheldon got the rankings, like the number
- 57:53average. But he did get some interesting
- 57:56information both on the teams that played for the national
- 57:58title and then a run of the new year six teams, excluding G5 S
- 58:02Brian press that because this is about 5 minutes.
- 58:06Everybody hold with us. We'll come back because this is
- 58:10some good, this is some good stuff right here to.
- 58:15Some of the ranks for the teams that are making the playoffs
- 58:17consistently that are making those New Year's 6 bowls.
- 58:19So let's focus first on Washington and Michigan.
- 58:24Sheldon, I know you've kind of crunched the numbers there.
- 58:26What are the average player rankings per 247 and kind of
- 58:29what is that telling you? Sure.
- 58:31So I went back the last four years and took the average
- 58:34player ranking for each team's class in a season.
- 58:39And so for Michigan, it averaged out to about 15th.
- 58:42That's typically where they've been and and that's not far off
- 58:44from their composite ranking. Also for Washington, it was 26.
- 58:48So it's sort of a tale of two different teams.
- 58:50I think for Michigan, you know, one of the things that I've
- 58:53noticed over the past four or five years is that recruiting
- 58:55rankings aren't quite as predictive of success as they
- 58:58used to be. And the biggest reason in my
- 59:00opinion is a combination of of course the the COVID year, so
- 59:03the fifth year from COVID and how it impacted high school
- 59:06evaluations as well as players coming up using that extra year
- 59:10and the transfer portal because guys are just moving all over
- 59:13the place and you don't have time to develop guys like you
- 59:15like you used to. So so you know because of that,
- 59:19I think what we've seen over the past couple years is that a lot
- 59:21of teams like Michigan, TCU, Washington who maybe don't have
- 59:25elite recruiting rankings find themselves playing for a
- 59:27national title. You know, I think Michigan and
- 59:29and and John Harbor staff has done a great job of developing
- 59:32players and and hitting on those evaluations for Washington.
- 59:35I think they were a team that was you know not to not to take
- 59:38away from their from their overall offensive defense.
- 59:40But I think they were a team that was very reliant on Michael
- 59:42Pennix at quarterback. And we look at some of the
- 59:45advanced metrics, they weren't quite as high on the Huskies
- 59:47this year just because they won a ton of close games and
- 59:49generally speaking winning close games at that rate is not
- 59:51sustainable. But the bottom line is, you know
- 59:55these are two great examples of where good player development
- 1:00:00will get you. So you know, I think, I think
- 1:00:03looking at Michigan and Washington, it is.
- 1:00:05It is sort of a case of, you know, just because you're not
- 1:00:08you don't recruit in the top 10 or top 15 doesn't necessarily
- 1:00:11mean you can't play for a natural title because these
- 1:00:13those two teams absolutely earned it and they they did a
- 1:00:16great job of developing players. So in the case of.
- 1:00:19Washington Kind of a combination of being a really good
- 1:00:22development program and hitting the hitting it at the park with
- 1:00:25the most important player on the field.
- 1:00:28Yes, and. I think.
- 1:00:28That's the one thing that makes evaluating recruiting rankings
- 1:00:31difficult is because the the quarterback position as we all
- 1:00:34know has such an outsize influence in the game.
- 1:00:37So it really, I think it's less a case of maybe, you know,
- 1:00:40getting you know, 85 scholarship guys out of nowhere and more so
- 1:00:44just you know, you you you recruit 3 stars, you got to
- 1:00:47develop them, but you have to hit on that right quarterback.
- 1:00:49If you don't have the quarterback who can who can make
- 1:00:51all those throws, make all those plays, you know you're not,
- 1:00:53you're not going to be at that level.
- 1:00:54That's just a reality. And and obviously, you know,
- 1:00:56Washington benefited usually from having a a stud arm like
- 1:00:59Michael Pennix. Yeah, it seems like for.
- 1:01:03Michigan, it seems more like that they were recruiting kind
- 1:01:05of in that higher average range that you see with some of the
- 1:01:09other blue chip programs. But they have a hit rate that's
- 1:01:13kind of out of the park. They're doing doing well
- 1:01:15developmentally, but if they're bringing in four and five star
- 1:01:18caliber players you're you're seeing those players get on the
- 1:01:21field quickly and and make an impact pretty quick.
- 1:01:24Yes, exactly. And I think honestly, if you ask
- 1:01:27Michigan fans, they might say that, you know, the the star
- 1:01:30rankings were not an accurate reflection of how talented they
- 1:01:32were. And I think you can make a
- 1:01:33pretty good argument for that just based on, you know, they're
- 1:01:35playing on the field. But I think Michigan is sort of
- 1:01:38a team like Clemson. Those, those title teams under
- 1:01:40Dabo, Dabo, Sweeney, where they're sort of on that, on that
- 1:01:44cusp of where typically you expect national title teams to
- 1:01:46be kind of on that lower edge where you sort of need to get
- 1:01:48into that, you know, cool kids club so to speak.
- 1:01:51But you know, bottom line Michigan, they've just done a
- 1:01:54great job of evaluating high school prospects and and
- 1:01:57bringing them up. And you know, I was listening to
- 1:01:59to Joel Class Podcast that day, he was talking about the
- 1:02:01importance of their strength coach as well.
- 1:02:03So all those factors kind of lead into Michigan's success and
- 1:02:05I think there was, there was certainly nothing fluky about
- 1:02:07it. Very good, very good.
- 1:02:11And now let's let's take a look a little broader here.
- 1:02:13Let's look at average player rankings for kind of those New
- 1:02:15Year's Six teams over kind of the last three or five years.
- 1:02:19Are are those kind of landing in that 10 to 15 range of the the
- 1:02:26Michigan's or are they lower end with with the Washington's or
- 1:02:30the TCU's or are most of those kind of landing in that top
- 1:02:33eight spot where you see those perennial powerhouses from the
- 1:02:36blue blood programs. So.
- 1:02:38It's a little bit closer to being blue blood.
- 1:02:40For this analysis, I decided to exclude group of five teams just
- 1:02:45because it kind of, you know, messes with the numbers a little
- 1:02:47bit. And obviously group of five
- 1:02:48teams are entitled to one of those spots in the new Year 6.
- 1:02:50But that doesn't necessarily mean they are, you know, always
- 1:02:53as talented as as those Power Five teams.
- 1:02:55So when I average out the player rankings for those teams that
- 1:02:57made the new Year 6 bowls, I went back over the last five
- 1:02:59years and the average ranking was around 17th.
- 1:03:02And I was pretty consistent across different metrics, which
- 1:03:05you can look at, but 17th is pretty much the standard.
- 1:03:08And you know, obviously there's going to be some outliers like
- 1:03:11you know UVA in 2019 when they went to the Orange Bowl, they
- 1:03:16won the Coastal Division, but they were a five loss team.
- 1:03:19So obviously that can throw rich into things because you know
- 1:03:22there are certain conferences where you're guaranteed those
- 1:03:24ball tie insurance. And so if you may be luck into
- 1:03:26playing in a bad division or you win a bunch of close games, you
- 1:03:30can find yourself in one of those spots even if you weren't,
- 1:03:32you know, necessarily a quote UN quote one of the most talented
- 1:03:35teams you can sort of find yourself in there.
- 1:03:37But generally speaking, yes, I would say that you want to be in
- 1:03:40that top 15 to 20 range is ideal for making those New York 6
- 1:03:43balls. Because you know, the reality is
- 1:03:44you got to win, you know, 10-11 games in a powerpuff conference
- 1:03:48to get there and that's that's a lot more difficult than people,
- 1:03:51people realize. Yeah.
- 1:03:54And so you're saying about 17 is kind of the average there across
- 1:03:58all those teams. You know looking at it that that
- 1:04:03kind of trends with kind of what we expected I think because like
- 1:04:06as you said, you've got those teams that are on the lower end
- 1:04:10that have those four or five losses that you know they're
- 1:04:13playing in that game. But when we look at the College
- 1:04:16Football Playoff, with the exception of kind of
- 1:04:19Washington's or ATCU here or there, you kind of get the usual
- 1:04:23suspects every year and that that's going to definitely trend
- 1:04:26in the favor of the blue bloods for sure.
- 1:04:30Yeah. And one thing I would stress is
- 1:04:31that I think people sometimes conflate talent at the very top
- 1:04:35with sort of being applicable to all the other teams.
- 1:04:38For instance, obviously teams like Alabama, Georgia, you know,
- 1:04:43Florida State, Clemson, whoever, they recruit very well every
- 1:04:46single year and they're able to, you know, replace those players
- 1:04:49because they recruit so well and sustain success for teams in the
- 1:04:52middle or even in that upper tier.
- 1:04:54I would say once you get outside the top ten it becomes much more
- 1:04:57of a question of you know can you evaluate guys, I don't think
- 1:05:00there's any necessarily a specific barometer for for team
- 1:05:04success in that sense once you sort of get into that more
- 1:05:06middle tier range. But clearly you know recruiting
- 1:05:10the top ten, top 12 level is going to help you a lot.
- 1:05:12And I think for you know for an average program like Virginia
- 1:05:15Tech, you know it's a question of you know can we recruit maybe
- 1:05:18in that 25 to 30 range and with good player development we can
- 1:05:23sort of be in you know that that sort of which might say standard
- 1:05:27deviation of you know just being right on that outside edge of of
- 1:05:30where you would expect a new year six team to be based on
- 1:05:32recruiting rankings. And I think it's you know it's
- 1:05:36it's a case study and just how how numbers can sometimes be
- 1:05:39flawed. But generally speaking when you
- 1:05:40average it out, generally you know the the recruiting ranks
- 1:05:43are going to win out in the end and and that that you know 17 to
- 1:05:4620 range is ideal for for most teams there.
- 1:05:49Yeah, and that. Would you know you talk about
- 1:05:51the Hokies there if you pull in, you know you you bump your
- 1:05:54recruiting up a little bit as we're starting to see those
- 1:05:58trends come into play and you get the right player at the
- 1:06:03right position when we're talking about a quarterback.
- 1:06:05And you get a right combination of that development that that's
- 1:06:09when you kind of get into that conversation.
- 1:06:11And I I think you know collectively here we're, we're
- 1:06:14hoping that you know maybe that right combination is is going to
- 1:06:18hit out for us this year heading into 2024 with the returning
- 1:06:23talent that we have. I know we've been looking out
- 1:06:26there and we've seen the percentage of returning talent
- 1:06:30for the Hokies is number one in the nation right now.
- 1:06:32So that that bodes well I feel like for having that continuity,
- 1:06:37having the development that you're talking about and
- 1:06:39hopefully having the the right pieces at the key positions to
- 1:06:42kind of put us over the top. Yep.
- 1:06:44And the biggest thing is, you know, it's important sometimes
- 1:06:47not to get too, too caught up in the in the star rankings.
- 1:06:50The biggest indicator of how good a team is going to be in
- 1:06:53one year is how good they were the previous season.
- 1:06:55If you look at Tech, they had a great end of last season, they
- 1:06:58won seven games. But you know, you look at their,
- 1:07:01their results against conference teams, I mean they just blew the
- 1:07:04competition out of the water. And I think that that bodes very
- 1:07:06well for you know how they're going to be next season with a
- 1:07:08pretty similar strength of schedule overall.
- 1:07:10And you combine that of course with the returning production,
- 1:07:12number one in the country according to Bill Connolly of
- 1:07:14ESPNI. Think it's going to be, it's
- 1:07:16going to, it's going to set up for really good teams.
- 1:07:17So in this case, I don't think that, you know Tech fans should
- 1:07:20get too caught up in the recruiting rankings.
- 1:07:22I think we, we saw the body of work from the team last year.
- 1:07:25We see how many players are returning and those two factors
- 1:07:27are the most important ultimately, in determining how
- 1:07:29successful they'll be next season.
- 1:07:33Good stuff. There from Shelton all the way
- 1:07:35across but I but I threw this number out because it's the one
- 1:07:38that when when I listened to it earlier today Brian called me at
- 1:07:4017. The average team they got in the
- 1:07:43new year six is 17 we're. Going.
- 1:07:46To 12 teams in the playoff, right?
- 1:07:50That's why I asked about the New Year 6, because you look at the
- 1:07:52New Year 6 normally you're going to have the best 12 teams are in
- 1:07:56those games, 17. We're 28 and you can say what
- 1:08:01you want as far as talent index goes, what this staff has done
- 1:08:05in the portal both this year and last year, what they've done in
- 1:08:10recruiting the last few years. It's.
- 1:08:13Trending that way. It's trending that way to that
- 1:08:1617 number. And like Kyron said, Kyron said
- 1:08:19it just a little while ago here, it's a 12 team playoff.
- 1:08:22This year it's a 12 team playoff.
- 1:08:25I love the. Players are talking about it,
- 1:08:27too. They understand the stakes and
- 1:08:29the changes and how that impacts their visibility in this whole
- 1:08:33thing, because it's what we've been talking about.
- 1:08:36Getting a seat at the table matters.
- 1:08:38Getting a seat at the table is going to help teams like
- 1:08:40Virginia Tech keep guys at Virginia Tech for longer,
- 1:08:44especially when you can get the nil pot, at least in a
- 1:08:47competitive range against some of those bigger schools that are
- 1:08:50trying to lure them away. So that's where we need to make
- 1:08:54our hay, 'cause you you talk about 17, so you're talking
- 1:08:57about a plus minus margin of of error there, you know, five one
- 1:09:01way, 5 the other. If if you're, you know, just
- 1:09:04going off recruiting rankings, getting in the top 25, top 22
- 1:09:08puts you right there in that fucking conversation.
- 1:09:14And then you also go with go with mean, go with average if
- 1:09:18the number one team, there's going to be a team that's
- 1:09:20sitting down there in the 30s. That, as I know what, Sheldon
- 1:09:24said, find the right combination of player development and
- 1:09:27quarterback. There's going to be a team
- 1:09:29that's in the 30s rankings that's going to make a run,
- 1:09:32that's going to get in the playoffs.
- 1:09:36Agreed. Let's hope it's US.
- 1:09:38One more quick thing before we go to break, you know, and this
- 1:09:41again goes to the competition piece.
- 1:09:44We've had nine guys into the portal.
- 1:09:46Y'all noticed. None of them have went to FCS
- 1:09:49schools. None of them have went to a
- 1:09:51lower level of football yet. True.
- 1:09:55For the beat. Why are you stepping?
- 1:09:56Down. Three went to P Fives, Baquan
- 1:10:00Wright Canteen and Dwayne Lofton went to Oklahoma State.
- 1:10:05Three team went to P5P4. Now three stayed at the G5
- 1:10:09level. We said it a few.
- 1:10:12Years ago, about talent, you tally.
- 1:10:15You said it here about this time last year.
- 1:10:19You've got to. Have.
- 1:10:20Talent. You've got to have talent now
- 1:10:23when I see who's left. We brought in some really.
- 1:10:26Good guys. But we let some guys, we had
- 1:10:29some good players leave that could have been role players
- 1:10:32that would have us follow this team.
- 1:10:33Yeah, and. And you know, when we look at
- 1:10:35the guys that left, the guys that left, that landed in P5
- 1:10:38were guys that were either starters or in the rotation
- 1:10:42enough to get, Yep. Heavy.
- 1:10:44Reps get good tape out there, right?
- 1:10:46So you had Wright Canteen. Obviously they're starters, or
- 1:10:50at least you know, 1A1B at their positions.
- 1:10:54And then you had Lofton, that he was.
- 1:11:00He. Was in that five or six man wide
- 1:11:01receiver rotation for most of the year.
- 1:11:03Had some catches so. You know guys that were getting
- 1:11:07reps on this team that were starting and rotational caliber
- 1:11:11players are being looked at by those Power Five teams as
- 1:11:16commodity. Still they're they're we're not
- 1:11:19just having to. When we look, when we look at
- 1:11:22years past, we had one or two guys that were dudes and then
- 1:11:25they got out of town because they were dudes for one reason
- 1:11:28or another, right? Whether we talk about hidden
- 1:11:30hooker or somebody else, right. But then everybody else you know
- 1:11:34ended up finding lower level G5 positions drop down to FCS and
- 1:11:40that's not knocking FCS or those players.
- 1:11:43But it it definitely speaks to the caliber of player that we
- 1:11:48were bringing in after those kind of you know handful of
- 1:11:52studs in a in a class and what we're doing now top to bottom,
- 1:11:56yeah you it's. It's kind of like the, I mean
- 1:11:58the floor has been raised. I mean we've got a, we've got a
- 1:12:03preferred walk on that. We talked about earlier that
- 1:12:06probably in 19 or 20, whatever year that was, he might have
- 1:12:10been the highest ranked guy in that class.
- 1:12:13I mean, before the Texas to Vt movement, he would have been.
- 1:12:17He would have been. He might have been.
- 1:12:18The he might have. Been the highest ranked guy in
- 1:12:20that class. So you know the floor has been
- 1:12:22raised. And it's kudos to the coaches,
- 1:12:25man. It's kudos to the coaches that
- 1:12:27can go out and sell what Virginia Tech heels so. 100
- 1:12:31percent, 100%, All right, lots. Of good stuff on the first half
- 1:12:35of this episode. We've got a few more things we
- 1:12:37want to hit on the backside, but before then we are going to hear
- 1:12:40from our partners at Main Street Pharmacy and our digital
- 1:12:43partners. I can probably.
- 1:12:46Save you a lot of money and I can take a lot better care of
- 1:12:48you. That's pretty much it.
- 1:12:50My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm a pharmacist.
- 1:12:53I own and operate Main Street Pharmacy here in downtown
- 1:12:55Blacksburg. My brother's a pharmacist.
- 1:12:57I'm a pharmacist. My uncle's a pharmacist.
- 1:12:58My dad's a pharmacist. I remember he would give me M
- 1:13:01and Ms. to count in little pill counters.
- 1:13:03This is just something I've always done and I'm just lucky
- 1:13:06that what I know so well is something that I can do and feel
- 1:13:09good about it and get back to people.
- 1:13:11Pharmacies are your. Frontline defense Pharmacy's job
- 1:13:14is to make sure you're getting optimal care for the lowest
- 1:13:17price possible. Also.
- 1:13:19We take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 1:13:21I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 1:13:23doctor, or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 1:13:25counter. If there's something that isn't
- 1:13:27commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 1:13:30in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 1:13:32that, we'll make it tailor made medications.

- 1:14:02website Dash Report. Now back to the episode.
- 1:14:06All righty. So let's hit this real quick.
- 1:14:09Tally Count already gave it away.
- 1:14:10Next month Matassas is going to join us here.
- 1:14:14I don't know if we have the date quite yet, but it's going to be
- 1:14:16sometime next month to start talking about 25.
- 1:14:19Put a good bowl on 24, but soon as that happened just a few days
- 1:14:24ago. We get our.
- 1:14:25Second commit, not our first. Because Kelton Ryan committed.
- 1:14:30I'll get to date. Sometime long time ago.
- 1:14:34But we got our first in state in local in Carter Starlet, a 6-7
- 1:14:38and a half 315 LB offensive Tackle out of Christiansburg
- 1:14:42High School. He is ranked 16th.
- 1:14:45In the state of Virginia, he is an 87 per 247.
- 1:14:51What a way to? Kick it off, kid.
- 1:14:53Right down the street that if you look at it, you saw that
- 1:14:56picture. He is one of those guy that
- 1:14:58looked a lot bigger than bowling and there ain't many of those.
- 1:15:00That happens. I have Brian, did you get a
- 1:15:03chance to look at tape tally? Did you get a chance to look at
- 1:15:05any tapes since he committed? No, I didn't.
- 1:15:08Look at no tape. I just know he's 67300 pounds.
- 1:15:12And he's. BMF.
- 1:15:14Man, and he's. That, I mean take the lay UPS.
- 1:15:17He's that. Close to the He's that close to
- 1:15:19campus or you close on that kid, especially for offensive
- 1:15:21lineman, can I can I say? Something He was getting a big
- 1:15:24push from Duke before the coaching change.
- 1:15:29Oh. OK.
- 1:15:31Big push. From Duke before the coaching
- 1:15:33change, and we know what type of lineman that they were bringing
- 1:15:37in to rebuild that program. If he was getting that type of
- 1:15:41heat from them, that's somebody you want to watch.
- 1:15:46So that that's another good way to start the class off there.
- 1:15:50And yeah, and. And and Render has definitely
- 1:15:52taken him under his wing. You've seen him posting a lot
- 1:15:54too, so get getting him out there on the lake doing all
- 1:15:59sorts of fun stuff, so he's been training with.
- 1:16:01Him too. So it ain't just been fun stuff.
- 1:16:03It ain't just fun. It's still been fun.
- 1:16:05But it probably ain't been fun. He's been working.
- 1:16:07With him, he's been working with him for a while, so I've seen
- 1:16:11some of that stuff. But you can't teach size.
- 1:16:14You know you can't teach size. You can't teach speed.
- 1:16:17For offensive lineman that is that close to campus?
- 1:16:21Yeah, I'll take it. I'll take him, yeah.
- 1:16:24Now Matay saying still 66290, Jim, that's still a big yeah.
- 1:16:28Hey, Jim. Only today Jim ain't playing,
- 1:16:30man. Yeah, Jim, you got to come down
- 1:16:32for me. You're going to have Matay mad
- 1:16:34at us. You ain't going.
- 1:16:35To be mad at us. Matay loves us.
- 1:16:36All right, so two other things. I don't know if y'all saw this.
- 1:16:39Obviously I'm going to hit the fun, the fun one first.
- 1:16:43Y'all see, Jay Ham got hired. I did.
- 1:16:46I paid. Attention.
- 1:16:47To that I know you did. I.
- 1:16:49Got the. Alert.
- 1:16:51Did he coaching, Did he coaching?
- 1:16:53He. Coached in some game.
- 1:16:55He coached in the. He was coaching for your team.
- 1:16:58Now he's coaching for my team. No, but.
- 1:17:00He's coaching for somebody. He was like, he did All Star
- 1:17:02game or something. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:04Yeah. Yeah, he did.
- 1:17:06Sorry man, shout out to Jay Ham. I'm sorry you got lumped with
- 1:17:10fuckhead clown, but you know. You know, hey.
- 1:17:17I'm glad you're out here prospering, my boy.
- 1:17:20You know what? It's it's good for him.
- 1:17:21I mean he he bare, he he burned a lot of load.
- 1:17:24He was put in a position that there's no way he could be a win
- 1:17:27and he's turning it around, man. So Brian, you have to keep us
- 1:17:30apprised of how the secondary is doing next year.
- 1:17:32Oh yeah, Andy. Yeah, and and with him being
- 1:17:36with my team, I didn't even have to watch none of like what he
- 1:17:39did because our fucking front office was a a mess.
- 1:17:44If you did anything good and your name wasn't Derrick Henry,
- 1:17:47you were definitely getting traded.
- 1:17:50If you did. Anything good?
- 1:17:52They was getting rid of you. I was like, what are we doing?
- 1:17:54We gave A.J. Brown to the to the Eagles and
- 1:17:57gave so on and so forth. So it didn't even matter what we
- 1:18:01did. You know it didn't.
- 1:18:03I mean, the defense has been solid, but I didn't.
- 1:18:07I didn't watch Jay Hamm's, you know, coaching this year.
- 1:18:11But again, it's just, I'm glad to see him, all jokes aside, see
- 1:18:15him progressing and and continuing his coaching career.
- 1:18:20Because that just goes to show you kind of like.
- 1:18:24When people talk. About, you know, coaching hires
- 1:18:28or you look at when people go home.
- 1:18:31Like if your first big job is at home, you got nowhere to go.
- 1:18:35You know, like he was kind of doomed from the beginning.
- 1:18:40For real. Like, you talk about Shane.
- 1:18:41Seriously, when people talk about Shane, that was my knock
- 1:18:44on that because of Shane's first job is Virginia Tech and he
- 1:18:49fucking flops with us already being where we were.
- 1:18:55Where does he go? You know what I'm saying?
- 1:18:57You got nowhere to go. So again, I'm.
- 1:19:00I'm. We ain't got to go to for no,
- 1:19:01not go birds. But anyway, we.
- 1:19:05You. Know that's just what I think
- 1:19:06about when it comes to the the, the coaching and oh, he's from
- 1:19:10here, he's the coach. Like sometimes you got to spread
- 1:19:12your wings somewhere else and and build your name and then go
- 1:19:16back where you started. So 100%. 100% All right, the
- 1:19:19other. Big coaching news, I'm sure.
- 1:19:21Y'all been probably somewhat following was Jeff Haffley left
- 1:19:24BC to go to Green Bay to be the defensive coordinator, which
- 1:19:29was. I mean, hey, we were in that
- 1:19:31situation last year, right? Laden the.
- 1:19:33Laden the Laden the late in the game and your head coach leaves.
- 1:19:37And right now, and I'm reading this, Bill O'Brien has
- 1:19:42interviewed with them. Jeff Monken.
- 1:19:45I swear to God they hired Jeff Monken.
- 1:19:47I'm going to hate our life. I'm glad we're not going to play
- 1:19:49in him Every run. A damn triple option.
- 1:19:52Paul, Chris the old Wisconsin head coach.
- 1:19:54Troy Calhoun, Air Force head coach and Al Al Washington from
- 1:20:01Notre Dame, who's their D line coach.
- 1:20:04I do not want Monken. Just because we dealt with Paul
- 1:20:08Johnson for all those years, I that that's the only one.
- 1:20:11The other ones I don't care about.
- 1:20:12I think they are what they are. Y'all.
- 1:20:14Got any feelings on that? I'm right with?
- 1:20:17You, any anybody but Monken is fine with me.
- 1:20:19No triple option. Monkey.
- 1:20:21Monkey 8 whoever I don't want to nobody to run.
- 1:20:24No triple option up there. Don't don't get anybody to run.
- 1:20:28No triple option that we got to play.
- 1:20:30But you know, BC is one of those jobs, man, that like that's
- 1:20:33always a gritty team and it's always a, you know, a tough game
- 1:20:37for most people to play. But it's like, I know it's got
- 1:20:40to be hard to just sustain and win there, you know what I'm
- 1:20:43saying? So I don't know.
- 1:20:46Interesting to see what they'll do.
- 1:20:48Yeah, Belichick. Belichick ain't going there.
- 1:20:53Yeah, I mean it it's it's got even harder for them I think
- 1:20:56since you know when you look at the transfer portal and then I
- 1:20:59feel like you know that really put them in a bad spot.
- 1:21:02The way recruiting shifted kind of towards late 2000s, early 20
- 1:21:07tens put them behind the 8 ball. Before that they were pretty
- 1:21:11damn competitive given their stature in in in the recruiting
- 1:21:15game, in retaining town and things like that.
- 1:21:18But once things started to shift and it became an arms race.
- 1:21:24They they've really. Fallen off?
- 1:21:25They weren't going to. Win that at all.
- 1:21:27All righty. We got one last piece to hit
- 1:21:29today because the day after we had our dream schedules that we
- 1:21:34put all of them up here. The actual final schedule was
- 1:21:38released, date set a couple times set that we know and I
- 1:21:44just wanted to talk with them about it.
- 1:21:46Tally wasn't here. Tally had things going on last
- 1:21:48week with Greg. Glad to have him back this week,
- 1:21:50but Brian, pull up that thing. And.
- 1:21:54We see it there. We kick off Vanderbilt,
- 1:21:57Nashville. Brian's going, Tally's going.
- 1:21:59I'm going to try to go. They asked me the other day,
- 1:22:02what do you think, Kurt? I'm like, I don't know what I'm
- 1:22:04doing next week. August is a long ways away.
- 1:22:09Then we got Marshall at home, ODU on the road, Rutgers at
- 1:22:12home, Miami, Stanford back-to-back on the road.
- 1:22:14B CS A Thursday night Georgia Tech at home late in October to
- 1:22:20the Carrier Dome in early November.
- 1:22:24Clemson. 11. 9/11, 9, Remember that one by week after that, the
- 1:22:31Duke game and the UVA game to wrap the season.
- 1:22:35So I'm going to pitch it to you boys.
- 1:22:36I'm going to pitch it to Tally first because he won't hear last
- 1:22:39week to kind of defend why he had his perfect schedule the way
- 1:22:42he had it. But Tally looking at this
- 1:22:44schedule, what do you like? What games like you think that's
- 1:22:48a good spot. I like where that is and what do
- 1:22:51you like first I. Mean the start of the season is
- 1:22:54good. I definitely like that
- 1:22:56Vanderbilt game. Being the first game for me,
- 1:23:00it's two hours away, a little less than two hours away, so I
- 1:23:04can be there. But playing the SEC team, a
- 1:23:06lower level SEC team, I think it's a good, a good call for us,
- 1:23:10a good shot for us to go show what we can do.
- 1:23:12We just got to show up and do what we need to do.
- 1:23:15And then, you know, you got Marshall, ODU and Rutgers.
- 1:23:21So three teams that we played last year that we, I feel we
- 1:23:26underperformed in all of those games.
- 1:23:29So it's kind of a a revenge tour on those games.
- 1:23:33You know what I'm saying? Even though we won the ODU game,
- 1:23:35I I don't think we played to our potential.
- 1:23:38No, he didn't. So I think that first four games
- 1:23:42can give us a big boost moving up and going into the season.
- 1:23:47So I like that again. It's going to be fun to watch.
- 1:23:51All right. Brian, what?
- 1:23:52About you, what do you like? I like that we're getting those
- 1:23:56long ass Rd. trips out of the way.
- 1:23:59We're going to Miami, going to Stanford, hopefully going to
- 1:24:03beat their ass on both cases there.
- 1:24:07I like getting big Rd. trips out of the way early in the season.
- 1:24:11That way we're kind of as as we hit towards that tail end, we're
- 1:24:14sticking close to home. Got a lot of home games on the
- 1:24:16back end and the two Rd. trips aren't that bad.
- 1:24:21Nope, not at all. Two of the road trips, one of
- 1:24:24them is going to be a home game. You already know that with that
- 1:24:27Duke game. I I'm with Brian and I preached
- 1:24:30this. This was all my perfect
- 1:24:31schedule. I actually, you know, I wanted
- 1:24:34Stanford early. I wanted Stanford early.
- 1:24:36I wanted Miami. I wanted them late, but I wanted
- 1:24:38Stanford early. But getting the two longest Rd.
- 1:24:40trips out of the way is my biggest.
- 1:24:42Like I love, I like that. I love that.
- 1:24:45I also love it that we got two vibes this year effectively
- 1:24:48because after the Stanford game we don't play the next weekend
- 1:24:51and play the next Thursday. So we we we we sort of get that
- 1:24:55middle of the season. Take take a look at that after
- 1:24:57the Stanford game, we played six games and in the stretch of what
- 1:25:01how many days is that going to be?
- 1:25:02Brian Like trying to look here. So.
- 1:25:06In a. 24 In a 22 day span. We're going to play one game, 22
- 1:25:12day span. So we want to talk about y'all.
- 1:25:14Both played 6-7 games into a season.
- 1:25:16A lot of people are nicked. A lot of people are hurting.
- 1:25:19We're going to play one game in 22 days.
- 1:25:22Great point to, hey, let's get everybody healthy.
- 1:25:24Let's get these things healed up and things like that.
- 1:25:27All right, I'm going to go back to Tally again.
- 1:25:31Tally, what do you hate on this schedule?
- 1:25:34What do you throw your middle finger at and throw things at
- 1:25:36the TV? What do you hate on this
- 1:25:38schedule? Man, I guess what I hate is, you
- 1:25:42know, just even that stretch of that Georgia Tech hold on before
- 1:25:47we talk to any of that. Fucking going to Syracuse is
- 1:25:50what I definitely hate. I fucking hate that Carrier
- 1:25:52Dome. I don't care what kind of team
- 1:25:54they got. I don't give a fuck who is the
- 1:25:56quarterback. I don't care if they put a
- 1:25:58middle school team out there. I fucking hate going there and
- 1:26:01playing because it's always some bullshit that happens.
- 1:26:04It's always some dumb ass shit that happens.
- 1:26:06I fucking hate that. But we want to be a little bit
- 1:26:10more technical. That stretch of Georgia Tech,
- 1:26:14Syracuse and Clemson and even Duke, you know, group them in
- 1:26:18there as well, know they got new coaches and stuff.
- 1:26:20But that's just, that's a a lot of like, Nat ass teams that just
- 1:26:26fucking get in your ear and fuck with you, you know what I'm
- 1:26:28saying? Georgia Tech's one of those
- 1:26:30teams and Duke's one of those teams.
- 1:26:32And Syracuse, I know we don't know we got.
- 1:26:34But we got to go there and I know everybody's going to be
- 1:26:37looking forward to that Clemson game.
- 1:26:38Just all that kind of smashed in together.
- 1:26:41I don't love that Brown. Yep.
- 1:26:47I'm I'm right there with you, Tally.
- 1:26:49Really. You know I can.
- 1:26:52Say that Really. That four-game stretch between
- 1:26:54Georgia Tech and Duke with the trip to the Carrier Dome being
- 1:26:59the the bitch of it all because you know you hate making that
- 1:27:03trip and then having to turn right around and play arguably
- 1:27:08the best teaming on your schedule right after that.
- 1:27:12So that that that's kind of, that's kind of my my least
- 1:27:14favorable match up. The only thing that's kind of
- 1:27:17helping us there is that we get that as Curtis was talking about
- 1:27:20those days to kind of gear up for that run, right.
- 1:27:22So I think that's going to be a saving grace in that period.
- 1:27:27But then you know you're going to have to to go on the road at
- 1:27:31Syracuse. Never fun fucking visitor to
- 1:27:33locker room at the top of the damn stadium.
- 1:27:36All sorts of goofy shit. Like if it can happen, it will
- 1:27:39happen. It's not quite ODU.
- 1:27:40We get stuck in an elevator, but pretty much anything else is on
- 1:27:43the table. And then you got Clemson coming
- 1:27:46off of that. You know that that's going to be
- 1:27:48a big game. Everybody's circling that one
- 1:27:49all. Right, so.
- 1:27:51It is a resounding majority, super majority win.
- 1:27:57I hate playing Syracuse. Hate, hate.
- 1:27:59Everybody hates it. Nobody likes it.
- 1:28:01I hate it even doubly more that the freaking assholes down in
- 1:28:05Charlotte chose to put Clemson the game.
- 1:28:08After that the. Game.
- 1:28:10After that I'm. An orange lover.
- 1:28:12I love orange. That's too much orange.
- 1:28:14That's too much orange. We.
- 1:28:15Don't need that. Much fucking orange at one time.
- 1:28:17My second now I got a two y'all stuck with that.
- 1:28:21And even though I. Like going down to Miami and
- 1:28:23getting that out of the way early.
- 1:28:24I hate that. That is after Rutgers, and I set
- 1:28:27it back two weeks ago. I hate.
- 1:28:29That's after Rutgers and I hate. It's a short week because y'all
- 1:28:33know and I said it, I'll repeat myself again.
- 1:28:35She, I know, is going to play very physical.
- 1:28:38We're going to come. Out of that game, soar.
- 1:28:42And now we got to. Get in a flight, go down to
- 1:28:44Miami, so you know it's going to screw up the schedule and
- 1:28:47everything for that week. That's my second, but still with
- 1:28:50Syracuse. Let's look here, y'all kind of
- 1:28:54mentioned it. The hardest stretch.
- 1:28:56I think y'all are right. Even though we get a, we do get
- 1:28:59a bye week between Clemson and Duke.
- 1:29:02That stretch right there, it's like, you know, you know what?
- 1:29:05What is it Haynes King did down at Georgia Tech last year.
- 1:29:08He's a good football player. He's a good football player.
- 1:29:12Got a good coach, too. Yeah, good coach too.
- 1:29:15Carrier Dome Dean Clemson in town.
- 1:29:18Then you get a bye week and you got to go Natty Duke before the
- 1:29:21UVA game. So I agree.
- 1:29:24I think that is the hardest stretch of the season.
- 1:29:29What game I mean are? You what?
- 1:29:32What? What's y'all's opinions?
- 1:29:33On the Thursdays night games we on Thursday night.
- 1:29:40We on Thursday night, Man, Thursday night is us.
- 1:29:42We invented you. Know what I mean?
- 1:29:44We invented Thursday night. Let's go fuck somebody up on
- 1:29:47Thursday night and quit playing Who we played on Thursday night
- 1:29:50this year. Was it Sierra C?
- 1:29:51No BC, No last year. Like this past year, Syracuse,
- 1:29:54Yeah. Syracuse OK, we fucked them up.
- 1:29:57Yeah. Syracuse got fucked in the ass
- 1:29:59on Thursday night, so that's a good ass fucking night.
- 1:30:01All right, so BC get the league coach.
- 1:30:04Your coach just quit on you. No, no, Luke, no last league.
- 1:30:09Your coach doesn't quit on you. We ain't going to quit.
- 1:30:12We're going to keep pounding. Come on in here Thursday night.
- 1:30:16And it's on metaphorically. And literally, yeah, don't.
- 1:30:19Worry about that. But to go back kind of to what
- 1:30:21Curtis said when he's talking about the stretches, that kind
- 1:30:24of, you know, of course the one that I said, it's kind of the
- 1:30:28main one. But that stretch where you go
- 1:30:31Rutgers, then Miami, then Stanford all the way across the
- 1:30:35fucking country and then BC, who knows what they going to come
- 1:30:40out in. They might come out in some
- 1:30:42fucking blood socks or something.
- 1:30:44I don't know, bandanas around their Knicks.
- 1:30:46I don't know what they going to come out of here.
- 1:30:48So just that little that that is a stretch.
- 1:30:51That's not. I'm not loving that either.
- 1:30:54You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I like.
- 1:30:56The opening stretch though you said it tally.
- 1:30:58That opening stretch is really good.
- 1:31:00See where we are. I like what Chris said here.
- 1:31:04That will be a Friday night under the lights down in Miami
- 1:31:07and it like you said that that might be the coming out party
- 1:31:10because every it seems like I know people hate like we're on
- 1:31:14Friday night but usually a Friday night game you going to
- 1:31:17get 2 to 4 million dives on you maybe more but yeah but over
- 1:31:22over overall I I I'm not this isn't a terrible schedule like
- 1:31:29the flow isn't the flow is OK it's not as bad.
- 1:31:32As it could be, it's not as good as it could be.
- 1:31:34But I mean it it's it's it's definitely manageable because
- 1:31:37there's really only one team on this schedule that on paper is
- 1:31:42better than us, right, Two. Well, technically two.
- 1:31:45Technically, who's the? Who's the second one?
- 1:31:47Miami's. Technically, on paper, better
- 1:31:48than us. I disagree.
- 1:31:50The mother fuckers. Don't know how to coach them.
- 1:31:52They they decide they going to run the ball on 3rd down when
- 1:31:55all you got to do is take a knee to win.
- 1:31:56I disagree. That they are better than us on
- 1:31:58paper. OK.
- 1:31:59Yeah. Oh, no, I I understand where
- 1:32:02Curtis is coming from when he's talking about the average,
- 1:32:04probably have drinking and recruits and things like that.
- 1:32:07But I understand where Brian is coming from because we're
- 1:32:11looking at actual production and what we have going back, you
- 1:32:15know what I'm saying? So I get that.
- 1:32:17But yeah, yeah, no, no, no. I I understand both ways of like
- 1:32:21what where we're going. But like I said, kind of going
- 1:32:25back to what Curtis says, man, like just digging in and looking
- 1:32:28at that at that schedule, like Rutgers is going to be physical.
- 1:32:33That's going to be a physical game.
- 1:32:35And then to go out of that and then go to Miami, Yes.
- 1:32:39Oh man. But I I just had a, like a a
- 1:32:43flashback of US playing Rutgers this year.
- 1:32:48I think they beat us and had like 40 yards passing.
- 1:32:53It's crazy like that ain't going down in lane this year, man.
- 1:32:58No, I don't know how that game is going to go, but that game
- 1:33:00ain't going like that. And and I'll tell.
- 1:33:02You something else. Is that the the team that?
- 1:33:06Could have played. Rutgers in this spot this year
- 1:33:08is a completely different team that played them in this spot
- 1:33:10last year. Oh yeah, definitely.
- 1:33:11And we'll be talking. About and Curtis we talking
- 1:33:14about Miami in that bowl game in the Penn Straight Bowl.
- 1:33:18Rutgers beat Miami. Rutgers beat Miami.
- 1:33:20We had the same record overall. Rutgers beat Miami.
- 1:33:23They they are not. I.
- 1:33:26If you're if we're just talking recruiting rankings.
- 1:33:28If we're just talking recruiting, yeah, talent, fine.
- 1:33:30Talent, fine. But on paper they're not a
- 1:33:32better team than us. There we go.
- 1:33:34There we go. OK.
- 1:33:35All right. Boys, we didn't win.
- 1:33:38Hour and hour and 30. What else?
