SPEAKER_00: Here's what Emily texted about the No Child Left Behind.
• 0:02
SPEAKER_00: She says, No Child Left Behind was tossed and replaced with Every Student Succeeds Act.
• 0:08
SPEAKER_00: Basically, is the reason why we have measures and benchmarks for students for their grades.
• 0:12
SPEAKER_00: It's also why there's standard testing for school funding.
• 0:15
SPEAKER_01: So I had to do a little, I had to do a little check on this.
• 0:18
SPEAKER_01: Because I'm like, I I mentioned, I go, what exactly was No Child Left Behind?
• 0:23
SPEAKER_01: And I forgot about this.
• 0:24
SPEAKER_01: And now I remember it having a reading it, having just read it, I should say.
• 0:28
  SPEAKER_01: Having a reading it.
• 0:29
  SPEAKER_01: Having a reading.
• 0:31
  SPEAKER_01: This child left behind.
• 0:33
  SPEAKER_01: Pretty much.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_01: The No Child Left Behind Act.
• 0:37
SPEAKER_01: It came out in 2002 by uh President George W.
• 0:40
  SPEAKER_01: Bush.
• 0:40
  SPEAKER_01: George Happy.
• 0:41
  SPEAKER_01: George Happy Bush.
• 0:42
  SPEAKER_01: I haven't done that impression in a while.
• 0:44
  SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
• 0:45
  SPEAKER_01: Needs a little brush-up.
• 0:46
SPEAKER_01: It updated the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to hold public schools accountable for students' performance.
• 0:53
SPEAKER_01: Now, here was what the goals originally were: standardized testing, as we all know we hate.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_01: Students uh in specific grades had to take uh yearly reading and uh math tests, uh, adequate um yearly progress reports, also closing the gap.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_01: That law focused heavily on boosting scores for low-income students, uh, minority groups, special education students, English language learners, and then there were penalties.
• 1:18
SPEAKER_01: Schools that failed uh to meet these goals uh for multiple years, faced corrective actions.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_01: That means you're gonna top somebody out.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then it went on from there.
• 1:27
SPEAKER_01: The criticisms were teaching to test, which is the worst.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_01: You ask any teacher, they will tell you we hate teaching to test.
• 1:35
SPEAKER_01: Uh, I had a lot of conversations with Gavin's teacher last year about that.
• 1:38
  SPEAKER_01: He hates it.
• 1:39
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 1:40
  SPEAKER_01: Um, unrealistic goals.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_01: This was all under the no child left behind.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_01: And then the end of NCLB, that law, replaced uh December 2015 by the every student succeeds.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_01: Now, let me let me explain.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: Which is what Emily said.
• 1:53
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_01: Well, let me explain what that is.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_01: You get more state flexibility.
• 1:57
SPEAKER_01: States have more power to set their own academic goals.
• 2:01
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 2:01
  SPEAKER_01: I like that.
• 2:02
  SPEAKER_01: Testing requirements.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_01: States still uh must test students in reading math and uh annually in you know grades three through eight, uh, and once in high school, uh, plus science uh once in elementary and middle school.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_01: Okay, so they're adding to that.
• 2:18
  SPEAKER_01: Public transparency.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_01: So states must uh basically publish easy to understand uh online report cards, not your kids' report card, but how the school overall is doing.
• 2:28
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_01: Focus on uh uh um uh equity.
• 2:32
SPEAKER_01: The law claim the law aims to provide equal education opportunity and support for disadvantaged and low performing students, so a boost.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_01: Now, the main difference from no child left behind, this is the wrap-up to this: no federal mandates, broader measures, funding controls.
• 2:49
SPEAKER_01: So it I want to say it almost loosened the screws that were put down with no child left behind that changed us.
• 2:57
SPEAKER_01: It changed us from, well, we're not really learning anymore, we're learning to take a test.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_01: Now, hopefully, we can get back to a little learning side.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_00: And also knowing that not every child can test successfully, there's you know, maybe it's some anxiety with it.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_00: And when that is said, then it's like, okay, let's test them in a different way.
• 3:16
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
• 3:16
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, testing is horrible.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's do their marker this way.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_00: These students might do well this way.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's exactly be open to that.
• 3:24
  SPEAKER_01: And three, two, one.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_01: You're listening to Scott and Allie.
• 3:28
SPEAKER_01: Scott and Allie's big three.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_00: The big three with Scott and Allie.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_00: Brought to you by ENV Energy.
• 3:35
SPEAKER_00: Yes, your local family-owned EV Energy, too.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_00: They can deliver propane, fuel oil, and kerosene to your home, your farm, your business with no delivery fees or surcharges.
• 3:46
  SPEAKER_00: They're the no-fee fuel company.
• 3:48
  SPEAKER_00: With Scott and Allie.
• 3:49
  SPEAKER_00: With Scott and Allie.
• 3:51
SPEAKER_00: Now, I know that we're not gonna get this hot, but in parts of the United States, it's gonna be oppressive.
• 3:58
  SPEAKER_00: And I'm talking 110, 115.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_00: There is a severe heat wave that's going through, bringing these triple digits.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_00: A lot of like Texas, Florida, Carolinas, and they say even at nighttime, no relief.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine if your AC pooped the bed during that time?
• 4:16
SPEAKER_01: God, I went through it.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_01: Remember, I had to get a little charge up.
• 4:19
  SPEAKER_00: That's right.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_00: And the Supreme Court has again denied President Trump's appeal in E.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_00: Jean Carroll's sexual abuse and defamation case.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_00: Trump attempted to overturn a verdict requiring him to pay Carroll five million plus interest.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_00: This marks the second rejection.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_00: And Luigi Mangioni's state murder trial has been postponed indefinitely, as his lawyers argue it could be double jeopardy after he pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
• 4:48
  SPEAKER_00: I told you.
• 4:48
  SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_00: But the fact that it's getting postponed indefinitely.
• 4:52
SPEAKER_01: Oh man, I this dude's going to jail for life.
• 4:55
SPEAKER_01: So there's no, you know.
• 4:56
SPEAKER_00: Right, but I guess I would at least want some sort of date or some sort of ending.
• 5:00
  SPEAKER_00: Some closure.
• 5:01
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
• 5:02
SPEAKER_00: And there's the big three.
• 5:03
  SPEAKER_01: Uh, in a minute.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_01: Wait till you hear what this woman's using Venmo for.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_01: I strangely feel like you might have done this once before.
• 5:10
  SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you next.
