- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Wednesday, it's the 3rd
- 0:15of December and you have tapped on play so that you and I can
- 0:20pause in the midst of the madness of this Wednesday and we
- 0:24can come before the living God of the universe to have him
- 0:29speak into our hearts and our lives.
- 0:32Well blow me down. Is that not the most amazing
- 0:35privilege you ever did hear of? Yes it is and today we are going
- 0:39to read a story that you have been hearing since, well if you
- 0:42attended Sunday School you would have been hearing it since you
- 0:45were a wee Tucker listening to your Sunday School teacher.
- 0:48This is the story of Nebuchadnezzar's dream and
- 0:52Daniel interpreting it for him. I bet yesterday when you heard
- 0:56that God gave Daniel the ability to interpret visions and dreams,
- 0:59he thought of all of the superpowers.
- 1:02Why that one? Surely there'd be something more
- 1:04useful. No, not a chance.
- 1:07Because in that time in history, dreams and visions were really
- 1:13upheld as a profound communication from something
- 1:17beyond. And so they were always looking
- 1:19to understand what they meant. And that is what we will read
- 1:22today. Holy Spirit, open us to hear
- 1:25your truth as we read Daniel Chapter 2.
- 1:41One night during the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had
- 1:45such disturbing dreams that he couldn't sleep.
- 1:48He called in his magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and
- 1:51astrologers, and he demanded that they tell him what he had
- 1:55dreamed. As they stood before the king,
- 1:58he said, I have had a dream that deeply troubles me, and I must
- 2:02know what it means. Then the astrologers answered
- 2:06the king in Aramaic. Long live the king.
- 2:09Tell us a dream, and we will tell you what it means.
- 2:12But the king said to the astrologers, I am serious about
- 2:16this. If you don't tell me what my
- 2:18dream was and what it means, you will be torn limb from limb and
- 2:24your houses will be turned into heaps of rubble.
- 2:27But if you tell me what I dreamed and what my dream means,
- 2:31I will give you many wonderful gifts and honours.
- 2:35Just tell me the dream and what it means, they said again.
- 2:39Please, your Majesty, tell us the dream and we will tell you
- 2:43what it means, the king replied. I know what you were doing.
- 2:48You're stalling for time because you know I am serious when I say
- 2:53if you don't tell me the dream, you are doomed.
- 2:57So you have conspired to tell me lies, hoping I will change my
- 3:01mind. But tell me the dream, and then
- 3:04I'll know that you can tell me what it means, the astrologers
- 3:08replied to the King. No one on earth can tell the
- 3:12King his dream, and no king, however great and powerful, has
- 3:16ever asked such a thing of any magician, enchanter, or
- 3:20astrologer. The King's demand is impossible.
- 3:25No one except the gods can tell you your dream, and they do not
- 3:28live here among people. The king was furious when he
- 3:33heard this, and he ordered that all the wise men of Babylon be
- 3:37executed. And because of the King's
- 3:40decree, men were sent to find and kill Daniel and his friends.
- 3:45When Arioch, the commander of the King's guard, came to kill
- 3:48them, Daniel handled the situation with wisdom and
- 3:51discretion. He asked Arioch why has the king
- 3:56issued such a harsh decree. So Arioch told him what had
- 3:59happened. Daniel went at once to see the
- 4:02king and requested more time to tell the king what the dream
- 4:06meant. Then Daniel went home and told
- 4:08his friends Hananiah, Michelle, and Azariah what had happened.
- 4:13He urged them to ask the God of heaven to show them his mercy by
- 4:18telling them the secret so they would not be executed along with
- 4:22the other wise men of Babylon. That night, the secret was
- 4:27revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of
- 4:31heaven. He said, praise the name of God
- 4:35forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power.
- 4:40He controls the course of world events.
- 4:43He removes kings and sets up other kings.
- 4:46He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars.
- 4:51He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies
- 4:56hidden in darkness, though he is surrounded by light.
- 4:59I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors, for you have given
- 5:04me wisdom and strength, and you have told me what we asked of
- 5:08you, and revealed to us what the king demanded.
- 5:12Then Daniel went to see Arioch, whom the king had ordered to
- 5:15execute the wise men of Babylon. Daniel said to him, Don't kill
- 5:20the wise men, take me to the king, and I will tell him the
- 5:24meaning of his dream. Arioch quickly took Daniel to
- 5:27the king and said, I have found one of the captors from Judah
- 5:31who will tell the king the meaning of his dream.
- 5:35The king said to Daniel, also known as Beltashazzar, Is this
- 5:40true? Can you tell me what my dream
- 5:42was and what it means? Daniel replied.
- 5:46There are no wise men, enchanters, magicians, or
- 5:50fortune tellers who can reveal the King's secret, but there is
- 5:54a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has shown King
- 5:58Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the future.
- 6:01Now I will tell you your dream and the visions you saw as you
- 6:06lay on your bed while Your Majesty was sleeping.
- 6:10You dreamed about coming events. He who reveals secrets has shown
- 6:15you what is going to happen. And it is not because I am wiser
- 6:19than anyone else that I know the secret of your dream, but
- 6:22because God wants you to understand what was in your
- 6:25heart. In your vision, Your Majesty,
- 6:29you saw standing before you a huge, shining the statue of a
- 6:33man. It was a frightening sight.
- 6:36The head of the statue was made of fine gold.
- 6:39Its chest and arms were silver, its belly and thighs were
- 6:43bronze. Its legs were iron, and its feet
- 6:47were a combination of iron and baked clay.
- 6:50As you watched, a rock was cut from a mountain, but not by
- 6:54human hands. It struck the feet of iron and
- 6:58clay, smashing them to bits. The whole statue was crushed
- 7:02into small pieces of iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold.
- 7:07Then the wind blew them away without a trace, like chaff on a
- 7:11threshing floor. But the rock that knocked the
- 7:14statue down became a great mountain that covered the whole
- 7:18earth. That was the dream.
- 7:22Now we will tell the King what it means.
- 7:25Your Majesty, you are the greatest of kings.
- 7:29The God of Heaven has given you sovereignty, power, strength and
- 7:33honour. He has made you the ruler over
- 7:36all the inhabited world and has put even the wild animals and
- 7:40birds under your control. You are the head of gold.
- 7:45But after your Kingdom comes to an end, another Kingdom inferior
- 7:50to yours will rise to take your place after that Kingdom has
- 7:55fallen. Yet 1/3 Kingdom represented by
- 7:57bronze will rise to rule the world.
- 8:01Following that Kingdom, there will be a fourth one as strong
- 8:04as iron. That Kingdom will smash and
- 8:07crush all previous empires, just as iron smashes and crushes
- 8:11everything. It strikes the feet and toes you
- 8:15saw for a combination of iron and baked clay, showing that
- 8:19this Kingdom will be divided like iron mixed with clay.
- 8:23It will have some of the strength of iron, but while some
- 8:27parts of it will be as strong as iron, other parts will be as
- 8:30weak as clay. This mixture of iron and clay
- 8:34also shows that these kingdoms will try to strengthen
- 8:37themselves by forming alliances with each other through
- 8:40intermarriage, but they will not hold together, just as iron and
- 8:45clay do not mix During the reigns of those kings, the God
- 8:50of Heaven will set up a Kingdom that will never be destroyed or
- 8:54conquered. It will crush all these kingdoms
- 8:57into nothingness, and it will stand forever.
- 9:01That is the meaning of the rock cut from the mountain, though
- 9:05not by human hands that crushes to pieces the statue of iron,
- 9:10bronze, clay, silver and gold. The great God was showing the
- 9:16king what will happen in the future.
- 9:18The dream is true and it's meaning is certain.
- 9:23Then King Nebuchadnezzar threw himself down before Daniel and
- 9:27worshipped him, and he commanded his people to offer sacrifices
- 9:32and burned sweet incense before him.
- 9:34The king said to Daniel, Truly your God is the greatest of
- 9:39gods, the Lord over kings, a revealer of mysteries, for you
- 9:45have been able to reveal this secret.
- 9:48Then the king appointed Daniel to a high position and gave him
- 9:52many valuable gifts. He made Daniel ruler over the
- 9:56whole province of Babylon, as well as chief over all his wise
- 10:01men. At Daniel's request, the king
- 10:05appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to be in charge of all
- 10:09the affairs of the province of Babylon while Daniel remained in
- 10:13the King's court. My God, you are mighty, and the
- 10:28sweep of your hands covers not just the world, but it covers
- 10:33generations to come and generations past.
- 10:37Here we see the truth laid out before you as though it were so
- 10:42simple that you can see generations and generations into
- 10:46the future and reveal them in this way, in this vision.
- 10:51And Lord, through the midst of all of your great power and
- 10:54knowledge of all things, you hold us as your chosen
- 11:00possession, as your treasure, and you love us, and you invite
- 11:06us into your family, and you call us your children and you
- 11:11our Father, oh our Heavenly Father, we're so grateful for
- 11:16this love and that you would save us by sending your most
- 11:21precious Son to save us. So here we are, your redeemed
- 11:27and loved people who are in awe of you and all that you are and
- 11:33have done for us. So we pray all of this in that
- 11:36loving and saving name of Jesus, your greatest gift, Amen.
