- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Barry Ridolts, introducing you to a new podcast focused
- 0:04Speaker 1: entirely on cars. Every week, Matt Miller and Hannah Elliott
- 0:08Speaker 1: get together to talk about auto industry news, the cars
- 0:12Speaker 1: they're driving and reviewing, and anything else happening in the
- 0:15Speaker 1: worlds of automobiles. As a big car guy myself, you'll
- 0:19Speaker 1: hear me join them on an occasional episode now and then,
- 0:22Speaker 1: without further ado, let me introduce you to the latest
- 0:25Speaker 1: episode of Hot Pursuit.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I'm Matt Miller, I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is Hot Pursuit.
- 0:40Speaker 3: All right, we have a fantastic podcast for you today.
- 0:43Speaker 3: We're going to touch on Formula one, give you the
- 0:45Speaker 3: update on the.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Ferraris we were talking about last week.
- 0:48Speaker 3: But we also have a special guest, recurring guest, Barry Ridolts.
- 0:51Speaker 3: He is the host of Masters in Business, probably our
- 0:55Speaker 3: most popular podcast on the Bloomberg platform, and he has
- 0:59Speaker 3: a new podcast called At the Money.
- 1:01Speaker 1: At the Money ATM plus.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Obviously the founder of Ritholts Wealth Management, and he's a
- 1:05Speaker 3: contributor to Bloomberg a lot. So, Hannah, we're going to
- 1:08Speaker 3: talk about Formula one because you're preparing to go to
- 1:10Speaker 3: Las Vegas. We're also going to talk about hybrids. I
- 1:13Speaker 3: think they're the way forward. You think it's a band aid.
- 1:16Speaker 3: There's a lot more sort of econo boxes and grocery
- 1:20Speaker 3: getters that I think are really cool though in this space.
- 1:23Speaker 4: And then we're going to get to Audi's.
- 1:24Speaker 3: You just recently drove the SQ eight E Tron, that's correct,
- 1:29Speaker 3: and Barry has an R eight. The first car I
- 1:32Speaker 3: bought was an Audie and a for a Vant.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Those have become very collectible now and mine was a
- 1:38Speaker 1: two point five TDI which I loved with so stick shift, yes, obviously, yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 1: those have become desirable.
- 1:44Speaker 3: All right, Let's kick it off though with Formula one,
- 1:46Speaker 3: because I guess what you're getting ready.
- 1:49Speaker 4: To head out to Sin City and what do you expect.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's going to be very interesting because when Formula one
- 1:57Speaker 2: in Liberty Media, which owns Formula one, entered into this
- 2:01Speaker 2: deal with the city of Las Vegas to host the race,
- 2:03Speaker 2: it seemed like a home run, like a match made
- 2:05Speaker 2: in heaven. I mean, it's Vegas, which of course is
- 2:08Speaker 2: sort of the party center of the world right now
- 2:11Speaker 2: and has a bunch of great professional sports team. We've
- 2:14Speaker 2: got hockey we've got NFL. We're gonna get some baseball.
- 2:17Speaker 4: The Bolagio win Resorts, the Sphere.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Oh, let's not forget the Sphere. There's so much there.
- 2:22Speaker 2: And the food's great, you know all.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Of this stuff.
- 2:24Speaker 2: There's Jean George restaurants. But the thing is, and you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: Formula one's been doing great in the US, but in
- 2:31Speaker 2: the past month or so, it's been really weird because
- 2:35Speaker 2: ticket prices have been dropping, both ticket prices for general
- 2:39Speaker 2: entry into the Grand Prix hotel room rates have been dropping,
- 2:45Speaker 2: and it's kind of creating this feeling that maybe Vegas
- 2:49Speaker 2: bit off more than it can chew. It's possible organizers
- 2:54Speaker 2: sort of got a little bit too greedy with how
- 2:56Speaker 2: they price things, and people are just not having it.
- 3:00Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 3:00Speaker 3: So if I decided, you know what, I am gonna
- 3:03Speaker 3: go see Formula on this weekend and skip the birth
- 3:06Speaker 3: of my second daughter, you think I could get tickets.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You'd have no problem getting tickets. Now, I will say,
- 3:13Speaker 2: you might pay like six or seven hundred dollars a
- 3:15Speaker 2: night for a hotel room at like the Venetian, but
- 3:18Speaker 2: that's pretty typical and it's actually far less than you
- 3:22Speaker 2: would have paid had you tried to get a room
- 3:25Speaker 2: a month ago or two months ago. So this is
- 3:28Speaker 2: an expensive sport and an expensive city, but compared to
- 3:32Speaker 2: what prices were listed at a month or two months ago,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you're gonna get a deal. And there's plenty of tickets
- 3:37Speaker 2: to go around. There are plenty of flights from La
- 3:40Speaker 2: to Vegas.
- 3:41Speaker 4: So Barry, would you when you go?
- 3:42Speaker 1: You know, the problem with Formula one is you know,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you're in a corner, you're watching the cars go by.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's not I know, it's very visceral and very exciting
- 3:53Speaker 1: feeling moments.
- 3:54Speaker 4: That's the best part.
- 3:55Speaker 1: But then you're there for another four hours and it's
- 3:57Speaker 1: a sport that's so great on television. It's very comfortable.
- 4:01Speaker 1: You really can see stuff. Everyone should go do it once.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I don't know if I need to do this in Vegas.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And the thing I'm wondering about how much of this
- 4:10Speaker 1: is specific to Las Vegas and how much of this
- 4:14Speaker 1: is just Hey, the economy is moving along, inflation is
- 4:18Speaker 1: coming down, but we're starting to slow down. When you
- 4:22Speaker 1: look at what's going on with auction prices of used cars.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Nine to eleven's ferraris whatever or even watches everything seems
- 4:30Speaker 1: that had round up in twenty and twenty one and
- 4:32Speaker 1: twenty two. It's all softening. I wonder if this is
- 4:36Speaker 1: a broader macro concern.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I think that's a really interesting point. And we talked
- 4:41Speaker 2: about this Ferrari last week, this Ferrari two to fifty
- 4:46Speaker 2: gto that was going to go on sale. And to
- 4:48Speaker 2: your point, Barry, yes, it's sold this week for almost
- 4:51Speaker 2: fifty two million dollars, but that was actually far less
- 4:56Speaker 2: than arms Sotheby's had hoped to get for the car,
- 4:59Speaker 2: and they were saying, you know, in excess of sixty million.
- 5:02Speaker 2: The hammer price on that before I was actually forty seven. So, yes,
- 5:06Speaker 2: this is a very expensive car, but relative to where
- 5:09Speaker 2: it was supposed to be quote unquote, it's really down.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And to your point, very I think this Yolo economy
- 5:16Speaker 2: is over.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Yeah, we saw this week Bloomberg put out a story
- 5:20Speaker 3: prices for Rolex and Pateech Philippe watches. You know, the
- 5:25Speaker 3: ultra luxury super high end watches on the Bloomberg subdial
- 5:29Speaker 3: index have come crashing down. They were off one point
- 5:33Speaker 3: eight percent last month to the lowest level since twenty
- 5:36Speaker 3: twenty one. Do you think that's the problem with F
- 5:38Speaker 3: one or is the sport to boring? The engines aren't
- 5:41Speaker 3: big enough, No one passes.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Here's a problem, Max Verstappan, that's a problem. He wins
- 5:46Speaker 2: all the time, He's already clinched the title. He's won
- 5:50Speaker 2: like seventeen of last twenty races. It's pretty predictable at
- 5:54Speaker 2: this point. Even second place is pretty predictable. And the
- 5:56Speaker 2: other thing to Barry's point about the TV view, this
- 6:00Speaker 2: race starts at ten pm Pacific time, which means you're
- 6:04Speaker 2: gonna have to be a diehard.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Fan whoa watch it. It really is one in the
- 6:07Speaker 4: morning East Coast time.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I did not many people who are going to be
- 6:12Speaker 2: up at one am in New York.
- 6:14Speaker 5: I don't think to watch this race.
- 6:16Speaker 1: You can always watch it the next day on the replay.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I mean, I'm a huge fan of Moto GP, as
- 6:21Speaker 3: you know, because it's a far better sport. I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 3: there's a lot of passing, there's a lot more strategy,
- 6:26Speaker 3: you have tons of different winners, and I just have
- 6:30Speaker 3: a subscription to MotoGP dot com and then I watch
- 6:32Speaker 3: it after the race is over because it was inevitably
- 6:34Speaker 3: in Indonesia, and then it doesn't come on until you know,
- 6:37Speaker 3: like eight in the morning on a Sunday.
- 6:39Speaker 4: I'm not up at that point.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I think it could be a bunch of different factors
- 6:43Speaker 3: from an economy that's slowing down to max for staff
- 6:46Speaker 3: and winning every time. But are we still going to
- 6:48Speaker 3: see like is Brad Pitt gonna go? Is like Puff
- 6:51Speaker 3: Daddy gonna go? You know? Are all the celebrities gonna
- 6:53Speaker 3: be there and having like fifteen thousand dollars dinners?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yes?
- 6:57Speaker 5: I think so, maybe more interesting.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Than Brad Pitt. David Beckham will be there. I don't
- 7:02Speaker 2: know if you've seen the latest.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Beckham nothing more. Yeah, I thought it was so good.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean I'm a big Victoria Beckham fan after that.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But yeah, Shack will be there, There will be celebrities there.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It's going to be fun no matter what. How can
- 7:18Speaker 2: you not have fun in Las Vegas? And I will
- 7:20Speaker 2: say organizers are saying that they're expecting record revenue regardless
- 7:25Speaker 2: of anything. They're on track to quote unquote sell out
- 7:29Speaker 2: of tickets. This is what they're telling us. So it's
- 7:31Speaker 2: still going to be great. It's going to be great fun.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Anyone who's going should really pack their coats though it's
- 7:37Speaker 2: going to be pretty.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Cold in Las Vegas.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Ten o'clock in the desert in November is cold, true desert.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. If you go to Vegas and you can't
- 7:45Speaker 4: have fun, you're not doing it.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Do you like Vegas? Berry?
- 7:48Speaker 1: No, I can't stand it.
- 7:49Speaker 3: But I mean for a couple nights with ye if
- 7:52Speaker 3: I have.
- 7:52Speaker 1: To this great restaurants, is great shows, but not my
- 7:56Speaker 1: first choice of destination. When they finally nuke that part
- 8:01Speaker 1: of Nevada, you know, in the whole area is just
- 8:03Speaker 1: silicon glass, It'll be fine.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I went to Lamborghini driving school there.
- 8:08Speaker 1: That's a different story. Was you know you can you
- 8:11Speaker 1: can rent a World War two spitfire and go up
- 8:14Speaker 1: with a pilot.
- 8:15Speaker 4: That's worth doing.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And Vegas is the only place that I'll let you
- 8:18Speaker 1: sign off and say sure, I'll take my life in
- 8:20Speaker 1: my hands in a.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Eighty year old World War two plane. Let's go.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I'd like, you can't do that anywhere in the desert, right, Vegas?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Sign up?
- 8:27Speaker 5: Vegas? That all counts as Vegas. Though, Yeah, I guess
- 8:30Speaker 5: this is a lot more than just the strip.
- 8:32Speaker 4: I mean totally agree.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Driving out to the Hoover Dams really cool, and I
- 8:35Speaker 2: do think sort of dusty hotels where Elvis played and
- 8:39Speaker 2: Sinatra are really cool.
- 8:41Speaker 5: There's amazing off roading out there. All of that.
- 8:45Speaker 2: To me, it counts as a quote unquote Vegas when
- 8:48Speaker 2: I go, oh, there's fabulous shopping to.
- 8:51Speaker 4: A right change.
- 8:52Speaker 3: I don't go to casinos at all. I don't hang
- 8:55Speaker 3: out on the strip. I don't gamble.
- 8:56Speaker 1: That's the part of Vegas. I hate everything around that
- 8:59Speaker 1: is really interesting.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Yeah, you want to wake up married to somebody you
- 9:03Speaker 3: have no idea her last name.
- 9:05Speaker 4: You know, apologies to my wife.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Your pregnant wife. You're very pregnant.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Let's move on to well and her favorite car is
- 9:11Speaker 3: the Volvo XC ninety T eight, which is a hybrid.
- 9:16Speaker 3: You know, you can go twenty miles or more on
- 9:19Speaker 3: the battery alone, and so for doing things around town,
- 9:22Speaker 3: dropping kids off at school, going to the grocery store
- 9:24Speaker 3: no problem, and then you can go on longer trips
- 9:26Speaker 3: because it has a gas engine that kicks in. It's
- 9:28Speaker 3: beautiful design. I have to agree with her on.
- 9:31Speaker 1: That, especially that interior.
- 9:32Speaker 3: And Barry, you sent me and Hannah an email this
- 9:35Speaker 3: morning about a Toyota Camry that's only going to be
- 9:38Speaker 3: so right.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Right, they're giving up the gas. Only listen. The crazy
- 9:43Speaker 1: thing about Toyota is they have this massive lead in
- 9:46Speaker 1: hybrid technology, and you were waiting for what they're going
- 9:50Speaker 1: to do next. Then you know they kind of let
- 9:52Speaker 1: Tesla eat their lunch. But what Toyota is telling us
- 9:56Speaker 1: is the immediate future, the next decade is going to
- 10:00Speaker 1: be hybrid.
- 10:01Speaker 3: And obviously Tesla doesn't have any hybrid vehicles.
- 10:04Speaker 4: They're fully electric.
- 10:05Speaker 3: That annoys me because I can never find a place
- 10:08Speaker 3: to charge and I like to have a little Moto vibes. Hannah,
- 10:13Speaker 3: you don't think that hybrids are the way forward though.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I am not a fan of hybrids, just because I
- 10:18Speaker 2: tend to be a purist. I want to go all in,
- 10:21Speaker 2: all or nothing, and I love the of course, the
- 10:25Speaker 2: quick performance of electric vehicles, and I love my own.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Personal internal combustion cars.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So hybrids have always seemed to me to just be
- 10:33Speaker 2: like halfway but nowhere anywhere.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Who cares?
- 10:37Speaker 2: If you know, Toyota was making a Prius because also
- 10:40Speaker 2: BMW was making the I eight, and.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Well, I love the I eight, dude.
- 10:44Speaker 3: The I eight and the I three to me were
- 10:47Speaker 3: when I first understood why it's cool to have a
- 10:50Speaker 3: range extender motor right because they were fully electric vehicles,
- 10:54Speaker 3: but they just had a little I think it was
- 10:56Speaker 3: a one three three cylinder as like a utility pack.
- 11:00Speaker 3: It's like bringing along a backpack. It's like being a prepper.
- 11:03Speaker 3: You know, you always have an option if you need it.
- 11:06Speaker 1: My wife's Panama Hybrid. We drove to Connecticut this weekend.
- 11:11Speaker 1: We got nearly forty miles a gallon on the way there.
- 11:15Speaker 1: We exhausted most of the electric for that range, but
- 11:18Speaker 1: when you drop your right foot, you still have over
- 11:21Speaker 1: five hundred horse power, and that car really goes when
- 11:24Speaker 1: you wanted to go. So to me, it's the best
- 11:27Speaker 1: of both worlds. Almost forty miles a gallon on one
- 11:30Speaker 1: hundred mile trip into the woods in Connecticut, and somewhat
- 11:34Speaker 1: less on the way home without any electric.
- 11:36Speaker 3: You know, I always say there's no replacement for displacement,
- 11:39Speaker 3: but I think batteries might be that replacement. I'm driving
- 11:43Speaker 3: right now a Kia Sorrento PHV. And aside from all
- 11:48Speaker 3: the other stuff that's impressive about it, and there's a
- 11:50Speaker 3: ton of stuff, it's got a locking center diff it's
- 11:52Speaker 3: got this really cool technology where when you put your
- 11:54Speaker 3: turn signal on in your center display, you can see
- 11:57Speaker 3: your blind spot, and in.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Fact, all of the Hyundai Kias do that. You signal
- 12:02Speaker 1: right and it shows up in your tyme, and you
- 12:04Speaker 1: signal left and it shows up in your left dial.
- 12:07Speaker 1: That should be a standard technology across the whole.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Industry and any luxury automotive.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Okay, well, but for Akia, I think it's really cool.
- 12:14Speaker 4: I mean, for.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Akia, it's got torque vectoring, all wheel drive. That's not
- 12:18Speaker 3: something you expect when you're buying a Korean car. But
- 12:21Speaker 3: I thought the engine was more substantial than it was
- 12:24Speaker 3: when I first started driving it.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I hadn't read the specs.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I popped open the hood and I saw it's got
- 12:29Speaker 3: a one point six leader in line four. Like that's
- 12:33Speaker 3: a tiny little motor, but it still has two hundred
- 12:36Speaker 3: and sixty horse power two hundred and sixty pound feet
- 12:38Speaker 3: of torque for you know, fifty thousand dollars for the
- 12:41Speaker 3: fully loaded, like most luxurious addition, that's pretty peppy.
- 12:45Speaker 1: It's a lot of truck for the money. And look
- 12:48Speaker 1: the way every one of these new manufacturers that are
- 12:51Speaker 1: trying to gain traction or expand their footprint find an
- 12:55Speaker 1: audience is by offering a lot of value for the money.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Think back to the way did this forty years ago,
- 13:02Speaker 1: or the way Toyota did it sixty years ago.
- 13:04Speaker 3: So, Hannah, do you ever drive like a Kia? Because
- 13:07Speaker 3: I always think, you know, you're the one who's constantly
- 13:10Speaker 3: in a culin in, But do you ever drive like
- 13:12Speaker 3: a Korean car?
- 13:13Speaker 5: This is true.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Typically no, I will openly say we do not cover
- 13:17Speaker 2: typically Kia at Bloomberg Pursuits. However, I did recently drive
- 13:22Speaker 2: the Kia EV nine, which is their big electric.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Suv I want to try.
- 13:27Speaker 5: I really really liked it.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I was surprised at how beautiful and well thought out
- 13:32Speaker 2: it was. I actually really would love to go visit
- 13:36Speaker 2: the factory in South Korea. I'm going to try to
- 13:38Speaker 2: do that next year because Kia is really making a
- 13:41Speaker 2: play to elevate themselves so that they could potentially have
- 13:45Speaker 2: shoppers cross shopping between like Volvo or a land Rover
- 13:49Speaker 2: into Kia or even Audi. And I don't think that's
- 13:54Speaker 2: out of the question based on what I've seen. We
- 13:57Speaker 2: joke about it, like, typically I wouldn't cover it, but
- 14:00Speaker 2: the limited amount of Kiya products that I have seen
- 14:03Speaker 2: and driven I actually am pretty impressed by And let's
- 14:07Speaker 2: not forget this is a company that also makes Genesis.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Is about to bring that up. Kia is owned by Hondi.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Genesis is their version of Lexus versus Tyota doing.
- 14:16Speaker 5: They know what they're doing.
- 14:17Speaker 2: One question, though, do you read the new Kia logo
- 14:20Speaker 2: as nine inch nails?
- 14:21Speaker 4: I love. I love the way it reminds me of
- 14:24Speaker 4: nine inch nails. That's hilarious. I'm on board with that.
- 14:26Speaker 3: And I, by the way, I think that the new
- 14:28Speaker 3: logo really helped them transition their brand a little bit
- 14:32Speaker 3: from being kind of a bargain basement, you know, Korean econobox,
- 14:37Speaker 3: to being something that.
- 14:39Speaker 4: People really would cross shop with. A Range Rover.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I mean, the tail you ride is a beautiful car.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I don't love the powertrain, but the logo I think
- 14:47Speaker 3: helps a lot. It looks really cool.
- 14:50Speaker 5: I agree.
- 14:51Speaker 2: I'm with you about it's an attitude of beautiful hospitality.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And I know that sounds like a PR line, but
- 14:58Speaker 2: it actually is true that some of their vehicles really
- 15:00Speaker 2: have this beautiful sense of a welcome environment.
- 15:03Speaker 3: We should throw in a V eight once in a while.
- 15:05Speaker 3: They need to make a big halo car.
- 15:07Speaker 1: There are no more V eights coming out, and they're
- 15:09Speaker 1: certainly coming out of Asia.
- 15:10Speaker 4: For mass production.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I just think they need to make a halo car
- 15:13Speaker 3: so that people can then feel okay buying the lower
- 15:16Speaker 3: end models.
- 15:18Speaker 1: That is so old school marketing. That's just not how
- 15:21Speaker 1: it's done. We're gonna give you a lot of car
- 15:23Speaker 1: or truck for the money. Yes, it's only a V six.
- 15:27Speaker 4: But you can tow.
- 15:28Speaker 1: You could stick six people in the car, you could
- 15:30Speaker 1: load it up with luggage, and it's not going to
- 15:32Speaker 1: cloas you an arm and a leg. That's the value
- 15:34Speaker 1: proposition for these cars versus the cars that we really
- 15:40Speaker 1: have grown up loving, the BMW's, the Mercedes, the much
- 15:43Speaker 1: bigger and more expensive cars.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Okay, I'm just saying like, if Audi had never made
- 15:46Speaker 3: the quatro and one races with it, if they had
- 15:50Speaker 3: never made the R eight that everybody drools over in
- 15:53Speaker 3: fifty shades of Gray, I don't know that we'd be buying,
- 15:56Speaker 3: you know, the.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Q three either.
- 15:59Speaker 3: And by the way, speaking of that, both of you
- 16:02Speaker 3: have a connection to Audi, because Hannah, you are test
- 16:05Speaker 3: driving some version of their e Tron bar. You of
- 16:09Speaker 3: course have the RA. But Hannah, first, tell us about
- 16:11Speaker 3: the ev that you drove.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Okay, so yesterday I drove the s Q eight e Tron,
- 16:18Speaker 2: which is basically it's sort of a higher performance version
- 16:22Speaker 2: of the Q eight, which is a five passenger suv.
- 16:25Speaker 2: It's all electric, starts at about ninety thousand dollars.
- 16:29Speaker 5: And it was beautiful.
- 16:30Speaker 2: The You know, Audi has been a little bit behind
- 16:33Speaker 2: when it comes to offering electric vehicles, and they're making
- 16:36Speaker 2: they're trying to make up for lost time, and so
- 16:38Speaker 2: anything with E Tron at the end is there electric offering.
- 16:42Speaker 2: The SQ eight, despite its confusing name, was really nice.
- 16:46Speaker 2: It was beautifully appointed inside, it was as quiet, actually
- 16:51Speaker 2: proven by Audi, as quiet as an a sedan, Really
- 16:55Speaker 2: nice balanced. It's heavy, it's like a six thousand pound suv,
- 16:59Speaker 2: so you do feel that a bit.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Some people like it heavy. Don't forget if you have.
- 17:04Speaker 5: To make a turn, there's no judgment.
- 17:06Speaker 2: I like it.
- 17:06Speaker 4: I like a big heavy cruiser.
- 17:08Speaker 5: We love that.
- 17:09Speaker 2: We love that, and this did feel really nicely insulated
- 17:13Speaker 2: and solid. And I actually have a friend who's been
- 17:16Speaker 2: looking for an electric suv, and I instantly message her
- 17:18Speaker 2: and said, I think you're really gonna love it.
- 17:20Speaker 1: A good looking truck.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I drove also the Q eight Etron, not the S version,
- 17:25Speaker 3: but I'll say that I was disappointed that they use
- 17:27Speaker 3: the Q eight Moniker because I think the Q eight
- 17:30Speaker 3: is one of the best designs Audi has come out
- 17:33Speaker 3: with in.
- 17:34Speaker 4: At least a decade.
- 17:35Speaker 3: It's a head turner whenever I see a real Q
- 17:38Speaker 3: eight on the road, and the e Tron version is
- 17:40Speaker 3: not a real Q eight, it doesn't look as cool.
- 17:43Speaker 3: It's more invisible, like you can easily overlook the Etron version,
- 17:47Speaker 3: whereas the full fat gas Q eight it's so hulking
- 17:51Speaker 3: and muscular that you can't overlook it. But it is
- 17:55Speaker 3: definitely solid. That's the word I would use for it,
- 17:58Speaker 3: Like it is a product that you feel like it's
- 18:00Speaker 3: over engineered and is not going to break down.
- 18:10Speaker 4: What do you think Bury about Audis.
- 18:12Speaker 3: I mean, you have obviously the Halo car, but what
- 18:14Speaker 3: do you think about the brand and the other vehicles.
- 18:17Speaker 4: You know, it's full time all wheel.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Drive, and if you're in the part of the country
- 18:22Speaker 1: where you're very much dealing with weather or you're off road,
- 18:26Speaker 1: they're great for that. They're notoriously expensive to repair, they're
- 18:32Speaker 1: not the lowest cost maintenance. Comparatively, you buy a Honda Toyota,
- 18:38Speaker 1: you put gas and occasionally oil into it, you're good
- 18:41Speaker 1: for a bajillion miles. Some the German cars tend to
- 18:45Speaker 1: be a little more finicky my experience with oudi's and BMW's,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you have to build a little bit of a repair buffer,
- 18:53Speaker 1: especially if you're looking for a thirty thousand mile car
- 18:56Speaker 1: like I know you're hunting for. They're not terrible, it's
- 19:00Speaker 1: not you know, you speak to people with you know,
- 19:03Speaker 1: British cars or even some of the older Ferraris and
- 19:06Speaker 1: you're writing big checks to your mechanic. But they're great cars.
- 19:09Speaker 1: They're well designed, they hold up well, and I know
- 19:12Speaker 1: lots of people who have Q five's with you know,
- 19:15Speaker 1: two hundred thousand miles on them.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Well, I think I have to say just a little bit.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I think that German engineering has a pretty good track
- 19:24Speaker 2: record for sure my ability, and it's a little unfair
- 19:27Speaker 2: to compare them to British and Italian engineering agreed.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I never had a problem. I had an Audi for
- 19:32Speaker 3: a long time, never had a problem with it.
- 19:34Speaker 4: If you have a repair, it'll cost me a long time.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Never had a problem with my.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Sl was bulletproof until you had to replace the coils.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You had to do something, and it's not an inexpensive repair.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I just brace yourself.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I'm sensing that Barry will always choose the practical option,
- 19:52Speaker 2: the very solid practical.
- 19:55Speaker 5: You know, you don't like THERA.
- 19:57Speaker 1: It's totally practical, like the six convertible manual, the most practical.
- 20:02Speaker 4: No, I don't think so, dude.
- 20:04Speaker 3: He has a C two and he bought a nine
- 20:06Speaker 3: to eleven that he sent to be converted into an EV.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 1: So in the middle of that, that's a fun project.
- 20:10Speaker 1: These are not cheap cars there, but they are if
- 20:13Speaker 1: you're buying them twenty five years old. That's why I
- 20:17Speaker 1: say you have to have a reasonable repair.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Do you have to set aside a budget?
- 20:22Speaker 3: So I, by the way, I wanted as longtime listeners
- 20:26Speaker 3: will know, I really wanted to get BMW seven sixty
- 20:30Speaker 3: to replace my wife's Volvo, and she has basically said
- 20:34Speaker 3: no way, Jose, but she is willing to get an
- 20:37Speaker 3: X five and so I want them fifty with the
- 20:40Speaker 3: twin turbo V eight and the ZF transmission. I was
- 20:44Speaker 3: looking at Savage Geese on YouTube and they have a
- 20:47Speaker 3: review of it, and they were like, listen, if something
- 20:48Speaker 3: goes wrong with any of the air suspenders on each corner,
- 20:52Speaker 3: eighteen hundred dollars.
- 20:53Speaker 1: That happened with my brother, and it was much more
- 20:55Speaker 1: than that his seventh six.
- 20:56Speaker 3: If something goes wrong with the transmission, you know you're
- 20:59Speaker 3: looking at five thousand dollars repair. If something goes wrong
- 21:02Speaker 3: with the engine, obviously rebuild, but they're not cheap to fix.
- 21:06Speaker 3: So if you're buying a used one, the guy from
- 21:09Speaker 3: Savage Geese said, set aside ten thousand dollars.
- 21:11Speaker 1: That's exactly right.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I'll buy yourself a more substantial extended word.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Now, now that.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Said, I've had two Series, I've had three Series. I've
- 21:18Speaker 1: had Next four bulletproof, never need repairs, absolutely spectacular cars.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But for example, I had a fuel injection issue with
- 21:29Speaker 1: them six that kept getting an idiot light. It would
- 21:33Speaker 1: reset itself, and it was a one of those quirky
- 21:36Speaker 1: little things that were hard to pin down. Ultimately it
- 21:40Speaker 1: was BMW who figured out what it was not a
- 21:42Speaker 1: cheap repair. Very well, that was my only repair I've
- 21:45Speaker 1: had on that car in ten years.
- 21:46Speaker 3: What was And I want to know from Hannah to
- 21:49Speaker 3: what was the first car you ever bought with your
- 21:51Speaker 3: own money?
- 21:52Speaker 1: A Chrysler nineteen sixty seven Chrysler three hundred cost me
- 21:56Speaker 1: one hundred bucks from my uncle. Had it for about
- 21:58Speaker 1: a month. My mom told nice, three hundred trip the
- 22:02Speaker 1: tires at any speed you're doing fifty miles an hour,
- 22:05Speaker 1: step on the gas.
- 22:06Speaker 3: And they've just come out with the last year of
- 22:09Speaker 3: the Chrysler three hundred. See with a six point four
- 22:12Speaker 3: liter Hemi in it, which I'm pretty excited.
- 22:14Speaker 1: End of the Hemi line drive.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Hannah, what was the first car you ever bought?
- 22:18Speaker 2: That was a sixty nine Buke Skylark that I paid
- 22:22Speaker 2: also one hundred dollars for.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I split it with my sister.
- 22:25Speaker 2: We bought it but a church lady who charged us
- 22:27Speaker 2: two hundred dollars and I was deeply embarrassed of it
- 22:30Speaker 2: and sold my half to my sister as quickly as
- 22:33Speaker 2: I can.
- 22:33Speaker 1: No.
- 22:34Speaker 4: Yep, but what a cool car.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Absolutely cool. She was far more advanced think in her
- 22:40Speaker 2: thinking about design and history than I was at the time.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I was so embarrassed of that car, but she loved it.
- 22:46Speaker 4: I think it's I just googled it. Look at this ferry.
- 22:49Speaker 2: What a cool car, green black interior, you know, beautiful steering.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Not the highlight of American automobile manufacturer.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I think it's awesome. I would like to have one
- 22:59Speaker 4: of those.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Tam my first car ever, because my dear late grandmother
- 23:04Speaker 3: bless her Soul, gave me ten thousand dollars when I
- 23:07Speaker 3: graduated from college and I put it on a down
- 23:10Speaker 3: payment for an auty A four Avauant in the year
- 23:14Speaker 3: two thousand. I was living in Frankfurt at the time,
- 23:17Speaker 3: so I got to drive it on the Autobahn.
- 23:19Speaker 4: It had a two.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Point five liter TDI, so it's diesel, but it had
- 23:22Speaker 3: one hundred and eighty horse power and it's pretty.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Light, so it really got moving.
- 23:26Speaker 3: I could do like two top speed twot twenty in
- 23:29Speaker 3: kilometers per hour, so that's like one hundred and thirty
- 23:32Speaker 3: miles per hour.
- 23:34Speaker 4: And I did that.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Well.
- 23:36Speaker 4: I was a little older, I was like twenty five, and.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Those diesels run forever. Also, those are three hundred thousand
- 23:42Speaker 1: mile cars.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a great, great vehicle.
- 23:45Speaker 5: What happened to that car?
- 23:46Speaker 3: Mat I had to sell it when I moved to
- 23:48Speaker 3: London a few years later because of the you know,
- 23:51Speaker 3: because the British drive on the wrong side of the road,
- 23:53Speaker 3: so it wouldn't have made sense. And also I think
- 23:55Speaker 3: I was broke after a few years and leaded the
- 23:57Speaker 3: money that does it for this episode, Barry, thank you
- 24:03Speaker 3: so much for joining us.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Real pleasure to have you.
- 24:06Speaker 3: I just want to point out that anyone who wants
