- hv160.mp3 Hello. Hello. Hello there. I am the guest star for today. How are you doing today, Andrew? Benjamin Canyon. Andrew, you look so youthful, but it's actually Benjamin, starring on the show, starring the hemispheric views. It's to have you out of here, Dad. Oh right. Okay. I've been I've been evicted from my own show. Um Benjamin, you actually you you got a topic right off the bat, don't you? What we're gonna talk about? I was hoping to talk about you two you guys probably don't know anything about it. Uh just like stuff there like like comics and Lego. Kinda like you guys do with like MacBooks and stuff. You should enlighten us. Yeah. You should tell us all about Liberalism. I I just need to think about something with neoliberalism. Um The foundation of neoliberalism is in fact Lego. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh I why would I not know that? Like Alright, so you're here for comics and Lego. Tell us. What do you love about it? Why are you here? I have recently just yesterday got this new um Lego set. Mm. It is a Spider Man one and it has Oscorp in it. Watch Spider Man one, Toby Maguire. Then you'll learn about And what is it about Spider Man, Benji? That uh captures your imagination. Why Spider Man over all the uh other heroes? Well, I do like other superheroes, but Spider Man's also a very interesting one. And he was like one of the first superheroes I'd learned about. One of my favesourit, that's for sure. Interesting. And how are you with spiders in general? Excuse me? How are you with spiders in general? Away from Spider Man, are you okay with spiders? You know the eight legged card? Uh no, but actually at s at school today there was like a a huge wolf spider on the ceiling. Like outside of the classroom. Terrifying. What did you do? At school. Did you did you deal with it in true Spider-Man style? Uh yeah, I like webbed it up and then I like threw out into nature where it belongs. And then I swung away to fight crime. That's the that's excellent. So you were in fact a hero in your own right. You removed the spider in a thoughtful considerate in a way. Beautiful. I love it. Anyway, let's you get back to Spider Man now that we've addressed the wolf spiders. Harry on Um I don't know much more to say, but uh I guess I just like. Well I recently got this new comic. I o I've already finished it. It's like it's ultimate Spider Man so it's set in a different universe. It's not the main one. Hm. And it's like Peter Parker, but he's like an adult and he's like So it's like Like a lot harder for him to be Spider-Man since he's a lot older and less skilled. Like Andrew. That's beautiful. So it's Spider-Man with some realism thrown in. Some parental duties. Yeah, that that's hard. Yeah. That sounds like a true challenge for a hero. Does Ultimate Spider-Man ever sit on the ground with his legs crossed and then his hips hurt? I'm still paying for that. Yeah, Benji, does um Ultimate Spider-Man keep spreadsheets? And uh you know. Oh yeah, he he has a lot of um spreadsheets and then he like complaints about yeah. I I see it a lot. It's at least ninety percent of the yeah. That checks out. Now I have a question for you, Benji. I I think you it's great that you're on the show and uh people who are listening, you know, it's great to bring your fandom or your interests to the podcast. Can you tell me, what has it been like to grow up as the son of a podcaster such as Andrew Kenyon? Is it is it challenging, is it fun? Do you sometimes think what on earth is my dad doing? It's fun and sometimes what on earth is my dad doing? We feel the same exact way, to be honest, so we're right there with you. Do you promote the show in your primary school? Um Sometimes. Sometimes. There's a little thing called there's a little thing called one prime plus. Okay, you want to get the kids on God. I don't think they'll figure out how to do that. I pr I probably couldn't Well you want to get the kids' parents on that, actually. Just due to legal legal Yes. And um change of topic here, but there was one more thing that I um told my wonderful father here to write down. Um it was how cool I am. Oh yeah. We love that confidence. I don't even think he needed to write that down. That was just already in the notes. That's every every show. That's top of the run sheet every time. Do you feel that you've increased the coolness of this very podcast by featuring in it? Yes. Definitely. Why would I not? I think that's fair. I mean I just wanted to give you the opportunity to say it, Benji, you know. Wow. Thank you for adding extra percentage points to our cool radius. And on that on that note, can we kick this guy out? 'Cause he's uh stealing my thunder. Uh uh. I'm the star. I'm the star then. Well look if you've listened to There is some history, yes. So I d I treat I treat my family the same way I treat all our listeners. Benji, it's been wonderful, but it's time for you to go. Get out of here. What an egalitarian. Benji, thank you so much. Absolutely disgraceful. It's been awesome to have you on the show and uh Thank you, Bengie. You're an official guest stuff. I said disgraceful. Benji's uh section there was brought to you by uh Strong Zero from Suntory. Nine percent. Really good. Is that beer? I don't know what it is, but it's delicious. It's like a lemon sour. Why would you have centauri, Jason? What they go down like water. You need to sell us? I am currently what is known and referred to as the cream filling, meaning on one side You have Andrew as the cookie. And then you have Martin on the other side as the other half of the cookie. And me, SmackDab in the middle. I'm in between time zones for you guys, which is weird. So we're doing this at eight PM my time, which is like only what an hour or something away from either of you? That's crazy. It is weird. I would say that's a first, but I think we've done this before. Yeah, and I feel like you've finally fulfilled your your role, your destiny as the cream filling of the sho Words that makes love. As soon as it's a Kingston. Yeah, I was gonna Kingston. I was gonna go with like a spoons metaphor, but I was having trouble. Like I think Andrew would be like the bigger spoon on the outside, and then like I would be next, and then probably Martin, I think, but like I think the cookie cream filling works better than spoons. And look, spoons get complicated because there are controversial thoughts about spoons. I love a good soup spoon, for example, when consuming soup, but no one because they think oh it's all too much hassle. But it allows you to push away to gather said soup and not get it all over the place. Yes. You must push away. Uh proper proper etiquette is that you scoop away from it oneself. Correct. Yeah. But see already I knew when I went with spoons that just the pure physics of the spoons not fitting together was already an issue, but I already know every one of us is gonna pick a different spoon, it's gonna be a different shape, the hand like they're not gonna stack well. So let's just stick with the cookie reference and and and move on. That's what I thought. Well, welcome cream filling. Yeah, as long as it's not a Monte Carlo. Thank you. I love Monte Carlos. Get out. No, they suck. We've been through this. I know we've been through this. Welcome, welcome cream filling. You are the cream filling of uh Check back on episode three or four, probably to hear about cooking. Nothing if not consistent. We've been talking about Tim Tam since the first one. This is crazy. It's it is crazy that you're you're here. Thank you guys for accommodating my hec Schedule. It's night time wherever like I never record this show in the night time. Instead of like any my beverages are wine. Like this is great. This is how normal people podcast right now. Yeah. In the night. Yeah, this is how I do it every time. I've still got my sparkling lime. cooler It looks like I'm drinking palm olive regardless of the time. And Japan's serving you well, Jason, you're having fun? Oh, I could not. There are not words to describe how incredibly happy I am uh here. I guess those would be words to describe it, in fact. So there you go. Which helps for a podcast, so thank you. Good to be in a well functioning society, democracy doing its thing. Oh every day is just wonderful. Birds chirping when I wake up. It's the dream. Is your house really tiny? Like the little bit of this room that we can see behind you, is that the entire house? No. So last time we were here we were in a very, very, very tiny house. This time we were in a much I won't I wouldn't say it's like a large house, but it is uh square meters of it, but it's much larger than our show notes? You're gonna put the square meters in the show notes when you work that out? Do the Apple measure up? Yeah, I'll put a floor I'll put a floor plan in there for everybody just so they can kind of understand how how things are laid out. Address, you know, GPS coordinates. Yeah. Yeah. I will fully dox myself while you notice he said square meterage. He's really embracing the Japanese way. There's no f footage. Yeah. He is the cream filling. It's a three L DK it. It is I would say probably I don't know. I'm I'll measure it. I'll get the square meters for you. I'll I'll report back. When you're in the location, you have to speak the language. In the world. Sure, I'm always in the same spot. Doesn't I? Martin's always in the same spot. But you but you travel. I think the real test would be if Jason actually crossed the equator, I think some sort of vortex or breakage of the space-time continuum would occur. It's the equator. That's the problem. He's still in the northern hemisphere. I don't know if it would work. I don't know. It would probably really go seriously sideway. It would be a hemispheric view, in which case we'd have to drop the S, then all the links would break and the whole world would collapse. It would just be a desire. Everything would have to change. We'd go down to one color and it would just be like what's that? They're just a big big blue box. That's no no it goes down to one color and we can't decide if it's orange or yellow and then the earth explodes. That's how it works. Oh boy. Okay, well let's let's try to keep the continuum. You know, in order. Mail Mailbox. From the listeners. From the listeners, it's the mailbox from the listeners. Let's hear what they have to say. Let's hear what they want to know. Let's hear right now. Wow. That was much longer. Yeah, I was thinking it'd be like a short jump. jingle, but that was that was a full on three minute track. That was more like l listener mile, actually. That went forever. Oh, jeez. Uh we've got two listener males actually. Uh we've got And many more male listeners from what I hear. Yeah, I kinda they're out of order here a little bit. They're a little out of order, but we can we could knock these out here. Um we got one listener male. Uh somebody wrote in there they knew we were uh let me bring up the mail here, they were listening to I forgot we were talking about was it one fifty eight and We were talking about handy, I think, something like that. And they wrote in to let us know about a kind of I don't want to say similar app, but in the same realm, I guess you could say called caption snap. So it's a menu bar app that does live captions from I guess Team, Zoom, uh Meet, a bunch of different places. And it just sort of keeps it as like a local markdown file so it's not recording the video and doing whole thing. It's just kind of doing it on your computer, which I thought was pretty cool. I have not really used it because I don't do those kinds of calls anymore in my life. So I haven't really been able to try it. But I think I put in the notes like in my past work life, this would have been incredible to have a whole meeting recorded as markdown and just like dumped into my notes. That'd be so cool. Yeah, I've never personally felt the need for it through work. Um maybe just because there are so kind of get in the groove of yep yep take the note of this or the mental note of that and move on with what you need. But what I would love to use this for or would have loved to have had this a long time ago, so thanks for writing in, would have been like research supervisor stuff university because a lot of that's very maybe conversational is the wrong word, but you are discussing ideas at length and then it kind of unfurls and wow, you know, I it would have been very helpful to have it for a lot of those things, so something good to look at. Definitely. Yeah, I yeah. Internal meetings like at work, def no, I don't care. I don't need to record those. This would be more for uh like customer interviews, like you're saying, where it's you want to be in the conversation and not be constantly trying to write crap down and be like, wait, what'd you say? Oh, I totally missed no, just let it let the machine do the thing. So that that would have been very cool. But just want to give it a mention that the it it's a very cool tool that um you don't need a bunch of stuff going on. It doesn't need to be going into the cloud. Like it's just a low. recording that gives you a nice markdown file. And we should say as well, like the listener who wrote in, am I correct in saying looking at our listener mail here, is it Weasley? Is that who wrote in? I was gonna go with Wiz. I believe so. Yeah, it comes Yeah, Wiz. Wiz, otherwise known as Weasley. So thank you for writing in Wiz. We uh we appreciate the recommendation. And it is Wes's app, if I'm correct, right? I believe so, yes, that is correct. We love the effort. We love that you bothered to reach out to us. So thanks for the listener mail, Wiz. Yeah, that's super cool. I love getting email like that. It's always reassuring to know that somebody is listening. Andrew actually were like you see you see download numbers, you see like all the graphs and all that crap, whatever, who cares? But when I open my email in the morning and I see that somebody said, Oh, I was listening to blah blah blah and such and such, it's like oh,, right. People do actually listen to this on a on a daily basis. That's pretty cool. Um second listener mail is actually via Mastodon. So it's listener at reply. I guess. We we obviously covered the fact that I'm uh traveling right now and I had mentioned the Unify travel router and how frickin' awesome it is. In kind of an annoying way. The arey impossible to get. So by me saying how cool they are, that's kind of annoying because people can't get them. But tell us on the next show what you know, tell us more. So I just wanted to do a quick micro review of the Unifyel Trav Router. So Unify, Ubiquity all the network crap that I've gone on and on about. We don't need to recover that. But with the travel router, what it does it's this little like it's probably the size of maybe like a deck of cards, but maybe even a little thinner. And it's got a little screen on the front, two Ethernet ports, and two USB C ports. And what it does is I basically get to where I am now, so get to this house. I plug that thing into the Ethernet of the internet at this house And it has cloned. My SSID from home, so my Wi-Fi. And so everything I bring with me just thinks that it's at home and automatically connects and does a teleport tunnel back to my house. And everything just is as if I never left home. It's so frickin' awesome. And the second thing you can do with it, which is kind of a little tricky hack thing, so you get on an airplane, you join the Wi-Fi on one device. Oh, that'll be fifty nine ninety nine a minute oh but I want to go on the Other device? Oh, that's another 59.99 a minute. Not with this, you join the Wi-Fi from that device. Everybody else just connects now to your device and it's one connection. You can connect to any Wi-Fi hotspot anywhere and have everything just connect to your device and then it does all the tunneling to the actual internet connection. So super cool little device. It's very small. It's USB powered. And I, if you have a unified network, absolutely get it. So it's actually creating a VPN tunnel back to your home network. traffic is coming from your home network so you you're secure as well. Totally, yeah. It's called they call it teleport. So you can do it from your computer as well, but this thing just then allows you know your Nintendo Switch, your laptop, your phone, your you could bring an IoT device with you and it would just be like, yep, I'm on your home network. Like, let's go. You don't have to sit there and type in Wi-Fi on every single thing you bring with you. So very cool device, highly recommended. It's like seventy US dollars. It's super cheap for what it does. And there you go. There's my review. It's incredible. I feel like that's a device that was made specifically for you to mention on this podcast, Jason. Oh, it's so cool. It's just freaking awesome. I just did a random like search for it. And uh yeah, seven I love that I love Jason. It's $70 US, $225.50 AUD. Well, I mean you gotta do the conversion. I think so. Yeah. Well, if they're ever in stock, Andrew, I will f I'll find one. Well, you equity network. Although actually no, I won't because because it'll be $70 for the device and then shipping to you will be $250. So it actually will be more. Uh the Eero make one. Jeez. Uh no. Rapid fire. Okay, rapid fire. I've got like five. The first one. Vicunya. What? Vicunya is a to-do manager app. app thing that you uh self-hosts, which I've been trying out very sparingly. Obviously, I'm I'm on vacation. I don't really care about anything that's tech right now. So I've been dabbling, if you will. But uh it's it's pretty cool so far. I like it. It's self-hosted, as everybody knows. I'm trying to self-host more and more and more. So Vacuna, pretty cool little thing there. Set app. Apparently they're doing weird new pricing. I haven't really looked into it, but I think you could get individual apps. I jumped off the setup train finally this year. I did the math and it didn't work out. So maybe the Did you get hurt? No, it's just soft landing. All good. Oh, good. Okay. Thank you, Nick Tan, listener of the show. He reported that there was a critical vulnerability in networking gear and I was away. I would have missed this, and I didn't miss it because Nick put it into the lovely forum for everyone to know about. So I was made aware I fixed the problem. Rewind back to the time of this podcast. Would you ever have thought that you would get real-time status updates about all kinds of critical network infrastructure from Western Australia. No. This is where I get my news from now. If it's not coming from down under, where is it coming from? Nobody knows. Nick's actually in your network now though. There's there's far worse people that could be in there. He's actually a Nick. Do you get? Nick? Oh he is. Yeah, that's true. N I C. He is actually. Yeah. That was a I got it. That was a computer joke, that one. Got it. Yep. Say I have many nicks in my network actually. Yeah. That's true. Just add another ten. Prompt. Uh prompt the app, which is a terminal app From panic, it's lovely. Uh they just reduced the crap out of the price recently for both monthly and lifetime. So they have a lifetime option, they have a yearly option, and they're like, hey, stuff's expensive. We get it. We're gonna we're gonna kick the price down. Kinda like we did with One Prime Plus.com. Um speaking of burr burrow, happy birthday to Natasha. Uh today Uh Is it the day of record? No, it was the day of recording. Oh, it's all screwed up now. No, no, no. It'll be the day after this is released. Oh, the day it comes out. The day the show comes out, sorry, is happy birthday, Natasha. So you can edit that out so all she hears is happy birthday because she's obvious. Oh yeah. There's no way she's not hearing this in her earphones, you know, on day one. It's not enough to be living with a third of the whole co hosting situation. It's like, you know what, I want even more podcast crap in my life, of course. Now happy birthday, that's it for my darling wife. And look, I'd actually booted this topic to the the next episode, but I brought it back as a rapid fire corning to immediately follow Natasha's birthday wishes just to show you how she keeps me in check. How valuable she's in my life because super rapid fire version. I've been having ergonomic issues with my right hand uh with the mouse so far to the side of the numpad. Oh the young has reached the age we have a newcomer. To the fold of wrist pain. Well, this is actually shoulder pain from also nursing children at three in the morning, but Oh, it's even worse. But anyway, uh he's falling apart at the seam. Exactly, I'm falling apart. And you know what? I went, you know what? I'm gonna take the plunge. I'm gonna go and explore the whole world of uh I I keep wanting to say Matthias because I learned German, but the Matthias, I suppose, Mini Tactile Pro. And uh I'm enjoying one in excellent, pretty much perfect condition that I got on eBay, and it's great it's certainly very loud. Oh he's extra old, he's using a clicky keyboard now. It's got the whole thing. It's a coming of men storage in his face when we've just started our show, I think. Well look, now I'm as old as you two apparently. The whole illusion's fallen apart. But anyway, the Natasha part was when she walked in and I was working from home in the afternoon and I had this set up underneath my studio display, she laughed at me and said, that thing is so loud it's ridiculous. It sounds and looks like people who are pretending. to look important while they're working. Like the clickety click, like my fingers are just jumping up and down. She's like, ooh is that. And you've just summed up every keyboard nerd on the planet. Okay, Martin, can you can you give us a bit of foley action? Let's let's hear it. Oh okay. Let me just um I'll just move the the microphone down. Here we go. Is that what you wanted? It's beautiful. Oh he's in. He's in. Wait till the comes in some custom keycaps and switch. Is the command key in the wrong spot? Oh I don't know if I want to do that. I like it too much. No, everything is exactly as I want it, so I'm very unkeyboard note of the fact that this will probably never change. We'll see. Did you now you said you bought it on eBay? Is that because it's i is it just a better deal or is this like an old keyboard? No, no, uh uh uh look okay, this is no longer rapid fire corner, but um I think they were just a bit more expensive. Uh to do them new and you brought up a keyboard and you thought it would be like a thirty second thing? Yeahah, I did, ye. Are you aware of this show? I am. I was trying to ch bend the rules. Um No, it was just it was already in Australia. This person I think had bought it new from Amazon Japan and barely used it and said that their roommates were not big fans of it. So he had to get rid of it. Wonder why. That was just either you either the keyboard goes or you go. It was it was cheaper and it was pretty much as new. So I was like, yep, why not? I'll I'll take the plunge. Nice. Thank you. That's good fun. I love that. Amazing. He brought up a keyboard and thought he could just like sneak it in and like nobody would want to have follow-up about it. Well you you can follow up as much as you want in the future. But look. How's your shoulder pain? Uh it is well actually having brought the mouse in, it is much more comfortable. So uh I still have uh children to pick up, which is not helping. Um I love them. But the the keyboard part is less strenuous, so it it is improving. Lovely. Thank you. So yes, happy birthday, Natasha. Thank you to everyone, rapid fire corner and yeah, thank goodness for one of the person keeping me in. Martin, you reckon you're you're c you're complaining about lifting your kids around. You you saw Benji earlier. He's ten, he's gigantic. Like I'm carrying that boy around w,hew, man. It doesn't get any easier. Yeah. He should be carrying you around. You hit that you do that. Figuratively and literally. Martin slash save. Martin dot loungeriminator.net slash save. Are you guys aware of this? No. It doesn't exist. There's a map. What? Yeah, so I've got competition. Yeah, there is one that has been hidden this whole time. Martin brought up a set of headphones recently. Yeah. And And he thought, I'll talk about him. That's cool. Probably the end of that. Little did he know. He had planted the seed of Martin.com slash save. Because a certain listener, my wife, Valerie, listened to that and she hated her headphones. Yes. And she's like, oh, Martin said these headphones are good. I'm gonna go in and do extensive research on JBL. Oh dear. And she did extensive research on JBL and came to rise me from sleep with with fervor of oh my gosh, do you know about Auracast and the JBL Tour Pro 3s? And I said, What? I know I don't. What is that? And she told me all of the cool features and And cool things about these headphones. And so we went to the Yodobashi camera here in in uh which one did we go to? I think we went to the one in October. What a flex. What a flex. And checked them out. And first of all, you could just try out in your headphones there because they have little ear tips you can you can use. They clean them. You have little cleaned ear tips. You can try them out fully good to go. It's awesome. It's incredible. And they have every headphone ever made, so there you go. Anyway, we try them out. They sound incredible. They do aura cast, which if anybody doesn't know, I wouldn't blame you, because no one talks about it. It's a feature that's been in Bluetooth forever, apparently and you can both listen to the same thing from a single source effortlessly you can take the charging case and plug it into a 3.5 millimeter anything and then still use your Bluetooth headphones because then it'll work as a transmitter for. It like the feature list is incredible. Long-ish story short, we bought two pair. And we both now have GVL, what are they called? Tour Pro 3s. Because they are pound for pound the best freaking deal for features, comfort, sound quality, the things that this thing can do AirPods could only dream of Absolutely incredible. So uh Martin dot net slash save. I'm thrilled. Uh they sound like more capable than mine, but the point still stands. I paid a fraction and I'm very happy with them. Exactly. So exactly, Martin. Yeah. That's b.right Oh, yeah. We got it for a hundred bucks off as well. So they were even cheaper. So so good. Plus tax-free. Did you have a gift voucher at the airport? Like no, you didn't. Titron, T'ittron, we didn have a gif voucher at the airport. But t tax free first of all, and then the cr the the conversion from USDN was good. So overall, like I'm incredibly happy with these. And the fact that I can plug the case into the airplane, I can plug them into a switch, I can plug him into a whatever and just use my headphones. I don't have to do some weird pairing. If we both want to listen to the same airplane movie, plug it in. We both connect to this Aura Cat. It it's just another example of like the amount of stuff that is packed into these headphones at that price point really tells you like you're paying a lot of overhead with some other brands just for the sake of brand recognition which but I'm not saying they're bad it's just like the things these do the other ones just can't match so very cool headphones martin.org slash save
