- 0:01Speaker 1: Elena would. Good morning Elena Wood from Nightingale. Goal Setting,
- 0:08Speaker 1: goal setting.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I know, I know, why are you grumpy about goal setting?
- 0:14Speaker 3: Bill? Well, I have to have the gold up up.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I set a goal for myself to set goals, and
- 0:22Speaker 1: I just didn't work.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I don't.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Oh, this is so valid. And you know, I think
- 0:29Speaker 2: a lot of times we kind of know the things
- 0:32Speaker 2: that we should be doing right, like we should be
- 0:34Speaker 2: getting more sleep and drinking more water and moving our body,
- 0:39Speaker 2: and there's just this gap between knowing and doing right.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Sometimes the Grand Canyon is that.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And I've been there, trust me, I've been to the
- 0:50Speaker 1: Grand Canyon too. As a matter of fact, I've been
- 0:52Speaker 1: to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Wow.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Well, what so setting goals, where do you begin?
- 1:01Speaker 2: So, you know a lot of times we kind of
- 1:03Speaker 2: have this ambivalence or kind of resistance to change, and
- 1:08Speaker 2: this is one of the reasons that it makes it
- 1:10Speaker 2: kind of hard to get going on those goals. And
- 1:15Speaker 2: I just I want to let you know that this
- 1:17Speaker 2: is normal and natural to have have these feelings. Ok, yeah, yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 2: it's part of this just means that the goal is
- 1:29Speaker 2: important to you. If you are feeling worried about making change.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It means that it matters, and so kind of lean
- 1:37Speaker 2: into that, celebrate that, and then take those next steps.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well word you then what.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Then? What?
- 1:46Speaker 2: So a lot of changs. We set goals that are
- 1:48Speaker 2: kind of too much all at once. You know, tomorrow
- 1:51Speaker 2: I'm gonna help for ten hours and I'm only going
- 1:54Speaker 2: to eat broccoli and I'm going to sleep for eight hours.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And you know it's it's too much. So start small.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Take exactly, I'm going to do eat an elephant.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I am going to do a push up, yeah, this afternoon, if.
- 2:12Speaker 3: That's one more than you did yesterday. I haven't done
- 2:15Speaker 3: a push up in ten years exactly.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah. And you can even start against the wall. Start
- 2:21Speaker 2: on your couch or your bench, so you're not going
- 2:24Speaker 2: straight to the floor.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't like to start against the wall because I've
- 2:28Speaker 1: been yelled. I've been hearing them yell get.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Up against the wall. Oh no, too many times, so
- 2:34Speaker 3: I don't do that different.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Wall, yes, yes, totally different.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So but so just start small. One day a week,
- 2:44Speaker 3: add a vegetable.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm going to add a vegetable to my exercise one
- 2:51Speaker 1: day a week.
- 2:52Speaker 2: As you do your push up, you take a bite
- 2:54Speaker 2: of that broccoli, exactly, press yourself back up.
- 2:57Speaker 3: There you go, All right, Now where do we go?
- 3:00Speaker 1: Now?
- 3:00Speaker 2: We just go to those basics. You know a lot
- 3:03Speaker 2: of times we think, Okay, I've got to do the
- 3:06Speaker 2: ice bath, I've got to do the inner minute fasting,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and not that there's anything wrong with these, but scaling
- 3:15Speaker 2: back and again just keeping it simple, starting with those basics.
- 3:19Speaker 2: What are the things we know we need to do?
- 3:21Speaker 2: Probably drink more water, get more sleep, eat more than
- 3:25Speaker 2: it's just it's change. Is not as flashy and sexy
- 3:31Speaker 2: as we often think it needs to be, just those small,
- 3:34Speaker 2: simple things.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, years ago I trained for a marathon and I
- 3:40Speaker 1: realized that it's a it's a very difficult thing to
- 3:44Speaker 1: do on your own because you're you're so you're prone
- 3:48Speaker 1: to injury. You know, you do you know, you don't know.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Sometimes you do too much and you don't realize.
- 3:54Speaker 3: You're doing it.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, I think.
- 3:57Speaker 1: It's amazing that people do it without having a trainer.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So maybe that's something to help you get to your goals,
- 4:02Speaker 1: to say, maybe it's some higher a train.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, working with a coach, a trainer, even
- 4:10Speaker 2: just having a good friend who has the same or
- 4:13Speaker 2: similar goals can really be helpful and can help keep
- 4:17Speaker 2: you a little more motivated early on a Tuesday morning
- 4:20Speaker 2: when you don't feel like doing anything, right.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, Yeah, And that's what I had a friend
- 4:26Speaker 1: he had run a marathon before, so I trained with
- 4:29Speaker 1: him and kind of and and we did it, and
- 4:31Speaker 1: I went and ran the Saint George Marathon and then
- 4:34Speaker 1: never ran another race in my life.
- 4:38Speaker 2: You know, that's okay. If the goal was to do
- 4:40Speaker 2: the one thing.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I did it one thing, one time. Let's see what
- 4:45Speaker 3: else do we need to focus.
- 4:46Speaker 2: On hereh Just remember you don't have to be perfect.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Oh thank god.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yeah, every day and every way I get better and better.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it doesn't The situation doesn't have to
- 5:04Speaker 2: be perfect. You don't have to be perfect. Just start
- 5:07Speaker 2: exactly where you are, exactly with the resources that you have.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And just know that the healthiest, happiest people, they have
- 5:15Speaker 2: a lot of balance in their lives. So you know,
- 5:18Speaker 2: some days they eat chicken and broccoli and they have
- 5:22Speaker 2: a slice of cake, and some days they work out
- 5:25Speaker 2: really hard and other days they rest. So just know
- 5:29Speaker 2: that it doesn't have to be one hundred percent effort
- 5:31Speaker 2: one hundred percent of the time, and that's not even possible.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Don't even try.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Don't even try. Have a beer and watch TV, and
- 5:42Speaker 3: then the.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Next day go on your walk and drink your water.
- 5:44Speaker 1: There you go, there you go. Can people find these
- 5:49Speaker 1: tips somewhere handy? I think you know you more like it?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, absolutely so. You can learn more about Nightingale's
- 5:58Speaker 2: amazing programs as well as this by visiting nightingalees dot edu.
