Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Sonny Gray Has Mild Hamstring Strain
Transcript
- 0:00What's up everybody? Charlie Marlow here with a quick
- 0:02Sunny Gray update got my transition lenses on once again,
- 0:06Tony Larussa style. John Mosalak met with the media
- 0:10down in Jupiter, FL and announced that Sunny Gray has a
- 0:13mild tear in his right hamstring and said that Gray being ready
- 0:17for Opening Day would be challenging.
- 0:20Remember, Sunny Gray was penciled in to be the Cardinals
- 0:24Opening Day starter. I think it's safe to say that
- 0:26it's probably not going to happen.
- 0:29So this news, not terrible, not great, kind of in the middle.
- 0:34I would say it's mild, so sunny, Gray, probably not ready for
- 0:39opening day. Let's just say OK, could he,
- 0:43could he be shut down for a couple weeks?
- 0:45Today is March 5th. Does he start throwing again in
- 0:49a couple weeks around March 20th?
- 0:51I'm just speculating. Does he need a a full month or
- 0:55so to get ready and ramped back up?
- 0:57Could he miss a couple weeks? Could he miss a month?
- 1:00I don't know. Not great news, not terrible
- 1:03news. Kind of in the middle.
- 1:05We talked about it this morning. I was on Hot Take Central on 590
- 1:09The Fan KFNS when the news broke of John Mozalak saying it was a
- 1:14mild tear. Mild strain, which is a tear to
- 1:18be fair for Sonny Gray on that right hamstring.
- 1:20Listen in myself, Jimmy the Cat Haze, Cam Jansen and Cole
- 1:24Bartimus on Hot Take Central talking about Sonny Gray.
- 1:28I want answers. I want the truth.
- 1:31You can't handle the truth about Sonny Gray's right hamstring.
- 1:34Tightness. Tightness.
- 1:36Here it is from Derrick Gould. Oh no.
- 1:38What's up, Jimmy? Take it.
- 1:40For what it's worth, this is from Derrick Gould's Twitter.
- 1:44Oh no. Sonny Gray has a mild hamstring
- 1:46strain. Permazeloc getting him ready for
- 1:50opening day is now in question and challenging.
- 1:54You can't handle the truth. Got some time.
- 1:59You know, sunny, Gray, mild hamstring strain, permaze lock.
- 2:04Getting him ready for Opening Day is now in question and
- 2:08challenging. And challenging.
- 2:10We have to. You have to reset.
- 2:11I mean, he's going to be shut down for a while, then you got
- 2:14to build back up. Build back up, stretch out.
- 2:17Damn dude, that's a buzzkill. That is a buzzkill.
- 2:20You know, Damn. That's no good.
- 2:22It's no good. I guess it's in the middle,
- 2:24though. It's mild.
- 2:25Yeah. It's not nothing.
- 2:27It's not a season ender, but it's mild.
- 2:31Yeah, interesting. So who's going to be the Opening
- 2:34Day starter now? Lance Lynn.
- 2:36Mild. Lance Lynn, he's going to start
- 2:39this week like he hadn't thrown a lot.
- 2:41So I think whoever they have a lot of number ones.
- 2:45Sure. So they they they have to see
- 2:48who's trending in the best direction.
- 2:50This ain't good. It's not good because last year
- 2:53in my opinion, things started to snowball with the starting
- 2:58rotation not being good, then attacks the bullpen, then
- 3:02everything want to rise, so they have time.
- 3:05Hopefully it's not anything beyond Opening Day and hopefully
- 3:09they can patchwork it. And it's important to know we've
- 3:12all been through this a lot, so everybody knows we're not
- 3:15doctors. But a strain is a tear.
- 3:19It's a mild tear. You ever You ever torn your
- 3:22hamstring? Nope.
- 3:24I never pulled my groin. I never my legs.
- 3:26My knees have been fine, ankles fine.
- 3:29It's hurt my hand, my chest and my shoulders.
- 3:34So what do they do? Do they do anything?
- 3:36Do you wait it out a little bit? What do you think?
- 3:39Wait it out. What can you do?
- 3:41What do you? I don't think well.
- 3:43I mean depth wise to be honest this, which is why I thought
- 3:47they were a starter short. You got Libertor and Zach
- 3:51Thompson as the first two pieces.
- 3:53I don't know in which order. I would lean towards Zach
- 3:57Thompson because I think Libertor might be better suited
- 4:00for the bullpen. So he moves Zach Thompson and
- 4:03see what he can do. I don't think they're going to
- 4:05go out and jump on one of these free agents that are still out
- 4:10there. I think it's fair to say he's
- 4:12not going to be the Opening Day starter and he'll most likely
- 4:15start the year on the aisle. I think that's fair to say,
- 4:18don't you? Think that's where I got out of
- 4:19that if I were betting, yeah. Damn, man.
- 4:23If Sonny Grace hurt too long term, I think John Tudor is
- 4:26still alive. I'm sure that leg is healed by
- 4:28now. This is a buzzkill, man.
- 4:31Yeah, I know. This is 8.
- 4:34Eight for yourself. They were, though.
- 4:35You know what everybody said? Get 2 front end starters, they
- 4:40got one and if the one guy gets hurt, you got zero right now.
- 4:45For now. Now hopefully Sonny Gray is only
- 4:48on the IL for a couple weeks, but it ain't good, Cam.
- 4:52It ain't good. It ain't good.
- 4:54It ain't good. Oh God.
- 4:58It's a buzzkiller I think you nailed it's a buzzkiller.
- 5:00We don't know the long term ramifications, but right now it
- 5:04certainly takes the air out of the balloon.
- 5:06So the other day in our very popular podcast Low Hanging
- 5:10Fruit, we were talking about Brendan and I I was already
- 5:13looking ahead to the trade deadline and I said, look, just
- 5:17most teams, if you're in the hunt, if you're trying to get
- 5:20that 85 wins, you might be around 500.
- 5:23You are most likely going to add a starter and probably 1
- 5:27reliever. And Brennan said, well who's it
- 5:28going to be? And I said I have no idea, but
- 5:32I'm telling you, we all know this.
- 5:33You don't have to be an expert to know dude, 162 games.
- 5:38You just don't have all 5 starters all throw 3233 starts.
- 5:42And we looked this up, I think it was 2015 was the last time
- 5:46the Cardinals basically were healthy in the rotation and that
- 5:49would have been I think it was a a way, no injury year.
- 5:52Sort of been like Waka Carlos Martinez.
- 5:55We can look this up, but the point is, you don't have to say
- 5:57it's going to be sunny Gray or it's going to be Kyle Gibson.
- 5:59But you can almost every year predict one of your starters is
- 6:04going to get hurt at some point and probably for a significant
- 6:07period of time. And what sucks is, look, when it
- 6:10happens before the season even starts, now somebody else is
- 6:15probably going to get hurt, right?
- 6:17Your whole staff is 35 years old.
- 6:20Somebody else is also probably going to get hurt.
- 6:23That's why you always need depth.
- 6:26Sonny Gray was the one guy who really couldn't get hurt.
- 6:30Now, I'm not saying it's the end of the world, but it seems like
- 6:32he's not going to be there from day one.
- 6:34He's your only guy on paper that you're like.
- 6:36I like starting him in a playoff series.
- 6:38I've I've said all along, like you can say we got 7 starters,
- 6:42you're probably at some point going to need nine.
- 6:45I mean, it usually happens early too.
- 6:47There's always someone, always someone who goes down at spring
- 6:51training, whether it's something that puts him on the shelf for a
- 6:54couple of weeks or possibly more serious than the first couple of
- 6:58weeks. Another one goes, the next thing
- 6:59you know, you're scrambling. So depth in the rotation is
- 7:03really important. They think they have it with
- 7:06Libretor and Thompson, I'm a Thompson guy.
- 7:09I think he'll be a good starter, but I certainly didn't want to
- 7:12see it at this point where you break that emergency glass now.
- 7:16Also, something else to remember, if anybody listening,
- 7:20go and look at the schedule. Look at what happened last year.
- 7:23Cardinals had an atrocious start.
- 7:25I do think it's important for this team to have a strong
- 7:27start, not just the four that you open up with the Dodgers.
- 7:31The schedule's really tough for about the 1st, I believe what,
- 7:3416 games before they play the A's and.
- 7:36And let's just let's just hope Sonny Gray is only out for a
- 7:40couple weeks. That's still probably this
- 7:42really tough stretch to begin the season.
- 7:45Where it could flip pretty quick like this Cardinals team needs
- 7:50to have a nice strong start. And now you probably think it's
- 7:54fair to say won't have Sonny Gray for that first stretch.
- 7:57It's tough, man. I think it's like I would assume
- 8:00the guy they'd like to be the starter in place of Gray is
- 8:04Michaelis. But we will see because right
- 8:07now you, you don't have a number one, and I think you got to just
- 8:11look who's pitching well and formulate the opening rotation
- 8:15that way, right? I mean, I don't think there's
- 8:18one guy you say this guy has to be the new Opening Day starter
- 8:24you see who's pitching well. Are there some guys are ahead of
- 8:27other guys right now in terms of being ready?
- 8:30Are there any veteran one year pitchers hanging out there?
- 8:33I know there are a lot of big name guys, but I'm talking
- 8:36about. I'm talking about the Brandon
- 8:38Crawford version of a starting pitcher.
- 8:40Rich Hill. See.
- 8:42Honestly, somebody like that. I wouldn't laugh at that right
- 8:45now. A Rich Hill type just to get
- 8:48you, OK, but do you want Rich Hill or somebody that's Rich
- 8:52Hill or Zach Thompson, but you're saying Zach Thompson as
- 8:56an as a A1 of your five to start the season like we're now
- 9:01depending on Zach? Thompson I take Thompson over
- 9:03Hill. I I don't mind the veteran guy
- 9:06that you can just discard. You could discard him after
- 9:09three four starts if he's not good, like a rich Hill type.
- 9:13Can't you just discard Zach Thompson to the bullpen?
- 9:17And then who do you replace him with then?
- 9:19Returns. OK, that phrasing specifically
- 9:24saying that it's in question whether or not he's going to
- 9:27make opening day makes it sound like even if he doesn't, he's
- 9:30not going to miss that much time.
- 9:32Wait, miss A few starts. I've heard I've heard this
- 9:34before. Yeah, you guys have the
- 9:36experience. I have a Hadley drop in here
- 9:38somewhere about the Cardinals always lying about the injured
- 9:40list. So you guys have more experience
- 9:42to put with this than I do I? Wouldn't say lying, I would say.
- 9:46Miscalculating. I would just say saying too
- 9:48much. I I think with injuries, the
- 9:50less you say the better. Well, to be honest with you, the
- 9:52Cards have admitted that they've done that.
- 9:55They've sort of promised timetables that haven't
- 9:57happened, and they realize it because MO has said we're
- 10:00hesitant to do timetables because it hasn't served them
- 10:03well in the past. So I don't know what this
- 10:06timetable is now, except it's not ideal.
- 10:09I'm not trying to say it's worse than they're portraying, and if
- 10:14it is short term, I'd be fine with Zach Thompson.
- 10:16He's being stretched out to be a starter anyway.
- 10:19If it's something more serious than that, I don't know.
- 10:22I would. I'd get on the phone right now
- 10:24and I'd say, hey Monty, hey Monty.
- 10:26What's it? Going to take you were great
- 10:28with us. We should have, we should have
- 10:30offered you early, should have given you the bag.
- 10:32What say you give us a one year thing and just really show what
- 10:36you're made of again? If the Cardinals say a player is
- 10:39going to be out for 10 days, he'll be back in a month.
- 10:41How about this? Yeah, but they give good gift
- 10:43cards. Yeah, they do.
- 10:44They disappear. First thing on Google, I put
- 10:46mild hamstring tear, pitcher timeline, Low grade hamstring
- 10:50injuries can heal within several days to one to two weeks, which
- 10:53will then see them return to sports activities.
- 10:56Larger injuries can take between two and six weeks for players to
- 10:59return to sport. When I hear this, I think of one
- 11:02guy. You put down the guitar and you
- 11:05pick up the baseball and you say Wayno.
- 11:07Give us another. One, we need five starts out of
- 11:10you take off that country hat and put on that birds on the bat
- 11:16and you can still. You can sing the national
- 11:17anthem. You can sing at the NASCAR race.
- 11:19Yes, hopefully Sonny Gray's back right there.
- 11:22NASCAR race is what early June Wayno gives you.
- 11:25Seven starts April May, then he retires again.
- 11:30He sings the NASCAR race. He's a hero.
- 11:32Yes, yeah, I would say OK, except I already saw that 400
- 11:36times as soon as the hamstring popped up.
- 11:39Oh, you saw it on and they? Were tweeting at.
- 11:42Me, it was hockey, Bob. Was that in the mix of his?
- 11:45He started John Scrolls. No, because when I tweeted out,
- 11:49I tweeted at the Votto thing on YouTube, which drops at 1:00.
- 11:53He, I all of a sudden can he pitch?
- 11:55Can he pitch? And then it was, you know.
- 11:58Question. This is a hypothetical.
- 12:00We're just having fun. Now, if the Cardinals now, maybe
- 12:04Wayno calls the Cardinals first. If the Cardinals called up Wayno
- 12:07right now and said we need you for eight starts, wouldn't Wayno
- 12:10do it 'cause he could he'd have redemption.
- 12:14What if he was good for two months?
- 12:16I bet you he wouldn't. Oh no, he would 1000%.
- 12:20All right, Jim, if the Cardinals called Wayno right now and said
- 12:26go down to spring training, build back up, we need eight
- 12:28starts, he would 1000% do it. I would agree, except for he
- 12:33pitched through a lot of stuff and if he's if, if the arm is
- 12:36terrible now. PRP.
- 12:38And it hurt to even throw with his kid.
- 12:40He wouldn't. Side arm.
- 12:43Just get lit up again. Throw left-handed.
- 12:44Just another season like that. Bobble heads.
- 12:48Yeah, I don't know, man. He's got.
- 12:50Another career going. On as long as he's not pitching
- 12:52on April 20th. Like the game you're going to.
- 12:56No, because Cam will be at his concert with Zac Brown Band at
- 12:59Chaffetz. Are you?
- 12:59Going. Yeah, we'll.
- 13:01See with Kate. I am going on a vacation in May.
- 13:05I do know that's 100%. Jeff Witt's always telling us
- 13:08that he's got tickets for us on the Cardinal game.
- 13:09Go for a day game right after the show.
- 13:11Head down there. Us for Go Say Hey to Jimmy, Get
- 13:16Maddie to go. Car service.
- 13:19Car service. Oh dude, that's my favorite
- 13:21Cardinal games for. Sure.
- 13:22Yeah, let's do that. 100%.
