Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Tesla Teases New EV , Roadster or $25K Model?
Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome. Back to the Elon Musk podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss. The Critical.
- 0:07Crossroads, the Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company and
- 0:12Neurolink. I'm your host, Will Walden.
- 0:17Tesla dropped a six second teaser clip over the weekend and
- 0:20the Internet went wild. The footage uploaded to the
- 0:24website and all their social channels, including X, showed
- 0:28only a glimpse of an EV silhouette whipping past the
- 0:32screen. But that was enough to stir
- 0:34speculation around what Tesla plans to reveal on Tuesday.
- 0:39This finally the long promise Roadster?
- 0:42Or is Tesla preparing to unveil a lower cost mass market EV?
- 0:50What is happening here? The teaser showed a wide stance,
- 0:53sweeping headlights and a low slung shape that recalled the
- 0:57original 2017 Roadster prototype.
- 1:01That prototype, which was launched into space on a Falcon
- 1:05Heavy, hasn't been updated in the public since.
- 1:08Nobody knows what's going on with it really.
- 1:10We just know that it's possibly coming, coming sometime down the
- 1:13line. M KB HD cancelled one of his.
- 1:18So didn't know when it's going to happen.
- 1:19So he's just like, you know, I don't need to save that.
- 1:23A Tesla originally claimed it would enter production in 2020,
- 1:27then push it back 2022, and then later said it could arrive in
- 1:312023 and 2024. So we have no idea.
- 1:34And at last year's shareholder meeting, Elon suggested a 2024
- 1:38production target once again, adding that engineering had
- 1:41finally been completed. But since then, Tesla has been
- 1:45silent. Elon has been silent.
- 1:48Now, Elon has repeatedly claimed the new Roadster will be the
- 1:51fastest production car in the world ever, boasting a sub two
- 1:55second zero to 60 time at a top speed over 250 mph.
- 2:00He also teased something very interesting, an optional SpaceX
- 2:04rocket booster thruster in a range of 620 miles.
- 2:09That would be insane. 620 miles is wild, but even among Tesla
- 2:15fans, you know, we don't really believe him sometimes. 620 miles
- 2:20sounds like a wild thing, and for a Roadster that can go zero
- 2:24to 60 in under 2 seconds, you go 250 mph.
- 2:29How do they combine all those things?
- 2:31That's a huge amount of range for EV, and if Tesla's Tuesday
- 2:38teaser points to the Roadster, Tesla will need to show more
- 2:42than a few flashy specs to rebuild confidence in the
- 2:44project. It's going to be really
- 2:45expensive and if you haven't already reserved one, now might
- 2:50be the time, you know? Another possible possible reveal
- 2:55was the Model 2, which is an affordable EV that tests the
- 2:59first hinted at in his battery Day presentation in 2020.
- 3:03That car, which some call the $25,000 Tesla, there's no like
- 3:09nobody knows what the price is actually going to be.
- 3:12It's been promised as a breakthrough product that would
- 3:15dramatically expand the company's market reach and
- 3:18internally, Tesla has referred to this car as part of its next
- 3:22generation platform, designed to cut production costs by 50%
- 3:26through a redesigned chassis and fully automated assembly lines.
- 3:31Nobody's seen that yet. Nothing's been reported about
- 3:35that yet, so it's possible, but we don't know.
- 3:37Tesla confirmed earlier this year that it moved next Gen.
- 3:40vehicle development of Texas and started building out production
- 3:43capabilities near Gigafactory. It's around Austin.
- 3:48Musk has said this platform could eventually support
- 3:50multiple vehicle types, including a compact car and also
- 3:54robo taxi. The company scrap plans for a
- 3:56dedicated robo taxi in favor of merging it into this new
- 3:59platform, which aims to simplify design, reduce parts and speed
- 4:03up manufacturing. Now the Reuters have reported
- 4:08earlier this year and they pointed out early 2025 is the
- 4:12initial production window for Tesla's next Gen. vehicle, which
- 4:16matches recent hiring pushes and facility upgrades in Austin.
- 4:20If Tuesday's event introduces a lower cost EV, Tesla could
- 4:24preempt competition from BYD and other Chinese manufacturers that
- 4:29have already launched sub 30,000 EVs in global markets.
- 4:35There's huge economic pressure right now.
- 4:38Tesla reported shrinking margins early this year, driven by price
- 4:42cuts and increased competition. Investors have been pressing for
- 4:45volume growth without sacrificing profitability.
- 4:49A mass market model could answer that demand if Tesla could hit
- 4:52the promise price point while protecting margins through lower
- 4:56costs. And right now you can get a used
- 5:02Tesla for around 20 ish some places but it's an older model.
- 5:09So when do you want a better newer model that has all the new
- 5:14bells and whistles? But for 25 extra $5000?
- 5:17Yes. But you can also just get the
- 5:22new stuff. You'd also save up a little bit
- 5:24longer and get a, you know, a Model 3 or Model Y or something.
- 5:29It's up to you. It depends on how much money you
- 5:32have and what you're willing to sacrifice to get one of these
- 5:34things. But a $25,000 model or sub
- 5:37$25,000 model would be incredible for Tesla.
- 5:42Everybody would want one. Like why would you buy a Honda
- 5:47if you could have a Tesla? Some people love Honda's.
- 5:50Don't get me wrong, I'm a Honda believer.
- 5:52I'd love them. I love Subarus too.
- 5:55I like Tesla's, I think they're great.
- 5:57But I don't have enough money right now to buy a Tesla.
- 6:00Does anybody want to give me money to buy a Tesla?
- 6:04I didn't think so. So I'm not going to buy a Tesla
- 6:06right now. I think it would be great if
- 6:09they had a $25,000 Tesla and it was a good car.
- 6:14It's going to be great, I'm sure.
- 6:15So the next time I look into vehicles, of course I would look
- 6:20into a Tesla. It's $25,000.
- 6:23That's pretty decent price for a vehicle.
- 6:27I'm looking at $40,000 cars, 50,000 dollars, $60,000 cars and
- 6:31I'm like man, that would be great to have.
- 6:33But I don't have $60,000 to spend on a car.
- 6:35It's a huge investment. If I could buy a $25,000 car and
- 6:40then invest the rest of the money into my retirement, that
- 6:43would be great. Or into my kid when he goes to
- 6:46school, you know, when he goes off to college, when he's 18 and
- 6:49he wants to start his own business, I'll have money set
- 6:51aside for him. Instead of buying a $60,000 car,
- 6:54about the $25,000 car, put the other money into his account.
- 6:58I mean, people think like that, right?
- 7:00You want to buy a house, but you also need a car.
- 7:03You're not going to buy the $60,000 car.
- 7:04You're going to save that money and buy that house and buy the
- 7:07$25,000 car. This is how it works.
- 7:10If you don't have the money for both things, there's also timing
- 7:14for the teaser. Tesla rarely promotes an event
- 7:17without a clear message. If this teaser happened, it's
- 7:21like literally days before the event.
- 7:24They know what's up, they have confidence in what's coming.
- 7:30That was sort of like the cyber trucks original reveal where
- 7:33Tesla dropped vague clips to fuel speculation before a full
- 7:37unveiling. Stock price went wild during
- 7:40those things, then after the reveal went even Wilder.
- 7:44If Tesla reveals a new Roadster, there's going to be questions
- 7:49about priority. When will this thing actual
- 7:51launch? Launching a high end performance
- 7:53car during a period of sliding demand and rising EV inventories
- 7:57seems kind of misaligned right now.
- 8:00Market conditions are down, the economy's weird, But a reveal of
- 8:05the mass market EV would show Tesla finally shifting toward
- 8:08accessible models that could drive global growth.
- 8:12And of course, they are a publicly traded company.
- 8:15They have to think about growth before anything.
- 8:18Get those shareholders their money back.
- 8:20Let's make some money. Some fans have suggested both
- 8:23cars could appear on Tuesday. What if there's a Roadster and a
- 8:26sub $25,000 car, the Model 2? That would be insane.
- 8:29It would be unusual. They usually do one launch and
- 8:36that's enough people go wild for that.
- 8:38But think about if they do a roadster and the new next Gen.
- 8:43compact model same day. I'm not a financial advisor in
- 8:49any way, but if you think this is going to happen, right now
- 8:53might be a really great time to buy some Tesla stock because
- 8:58you're going to make a real quick buck off both of these
- 9:01things. If they happen in the same day,
- 9:03stocks going to go wild. Tesla's also used product
- 9:08unveilings to manage investor expectations and shift the
- 9:11narrative around its stock. 2024 has been sluggish.
- 9:17They need a catalyst to keep it growing and keep it going.
- 9:20A new lower cost vehicle platform with confirmed
- 9:22production plans could reset the story heading into 2026.
- 9:28Going forward, 2025 was an OK year for Tesla, but they want to
- 9:32keep growing as fast as possible.
- 9:34And of course, they're doing AI and robotics now rather than
- 9:39just vehicles. So they have those other arms of
- 9:43the business that they're working on and those pump the
- 9:47stock up a little bit, make people some money.
- 9:50If they reveal 2 vehicles in the same day, who baby, it's going
- 9:54to go crazy. We don't know what's going to
- 9:58happen. We're going to see what Tesla
- 10:00plans to prioritize over the next two years.
- 10:04Whether it's going to be performance or like a production
- 10:08revolution with these sub $25,000 cars, we don't know.
- 10:15I wish I knew. There's speculation going around
- 10:19that it's both. And if it's both, good luck
- 10:24because which one are you going to choose?
- 10:25That's going to be crazy. All right, I want to say thanks
- 10:30to everybody who's been listening to the show for a
- 10:32really long time. This is just a little side note,
- 10:34but let me know in the comments what you think about these cars
- 10:37because they're going to be both are going to be amazing in their
- 10:41own ways. But I want to say thanks to
- 10:43everybody who's been listening for a long time.
- 10:45I really do appreciate you and I'm back on track.
- 10:49I've been sick for the last couple weeks and I've been
- 10:52posting older clips, things like that.
- 10:54I got a comment from somebody that said, you know, hey, I
- 10:58don't mind the older clips, but you got to tag them as like
- 11:03older clips, you know? And I was like, yeah, I got, I
- 11:07tagged it as 2024 or something with that older clip that you're
- 11:11that they were commenting on. And we had a little discussion
- 11:14in the comments. And that's why I love you guys
- 11:16to comment because I'd like to talk about things like this.
- 11:19We're community here. We're, we're not just me talking
- 11:21about these things. I want to hear what you have to
- 11:24say. I think that's important.
- 11:26That right there. I want you to be part of this.
- 11:29You're part of this community. Everybody that downloads the
- 11:31show. It's not just me, you know, I
- 11:34want you to be part of this too. So I'm not trying to sell you
- 11:39anything. Never have.
- 11:40I don't want you to buy anything.
- 11:42I, you know, I have a T-shirt shop called Starship Shirts
- 11:46where I sell SpaceX themed T-shirts.
- 11:49That's the only thing I sell. The other thing that I do is I
- 11:52put ads on the show because makes me enough money to keep
- 11:55the show going sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't.
- 11:58The bills rack up. So you know, it takes a lot of
- 12:02time to put these shows together and I've been doing it for I
- 12:06think it's around 1000 shows now.
- 12:07To be honest with you, I have no idea, but I just realized this.
- 12:10This is a little side note. I want you guys to know about
- 12:13this too. I started podcasting in 2006.
- 12:19I had a skateboard company at that time and I was like, I'm
- 12:24really tech guy, right? So I was early adopter for all
- 12:28things Real Player. If anybody remembers Real Player
- 12:31streaming media with Realplayer. I streamed some media back in
- 12:38the day. I did radio shows, online radio
- 12:41shows. Back then.
- 12:42I forgot what I called it, but my first podcast was in 2006.
- 12:47It was for my skateboard company and that company, it grew
- 12:53because I knew that people listen to my podcast, They could
- 12:56connect with the thing that we love.
- 12:59We both, we all love skateboarding.
- 13:00So they would connect and they'd leave comments because I would
- 13:04embed them on our website, on my website that I built with my
- 13:07only two hands. I coded it myself.
- 13:10It's pretty silly. Some HTML, some some PHP, maybe
- 13:14some comments somehow, I don't know, maybe I had a third party,
- 13:18I don't know to do the comments, but I was connected to the
- 13:22audience then and I think it's really important that we talk to
- 13:25each other. So if you have comments on your
- 13:27podcast platform, I know Spotify does, other podcast platforms do
- 13:32too. So if you do, please leave a
- 13:34comment. And also, you know what, I
- 13:36really need your help. This one I'm going to ask for
- 13:38you from you. If you have a second, leave a
- 13:42five star review. If you like the show, I really
- 13:46would appreciate that. That's all you need to do 5 star
- 13:48review really helps out the show a ton and I can continue growing
- 13:53the show. I want to grow the show even
- 13:55more than it already is and we have a pretty good audience
- 13:59right now, but I want to grow it to like 10 times this.
- 14:01I think that'll be great. Haven't really tried because I
- 14:03just like to do it, you know, it's been more of a hobby, but I
- 14:05would really love to focus on growth.
- 14:08So five star reviews really help.
- 14:10Any sort of interaction really helps.
- 14:12Leave a comment, any sort of good review, it's cool.
- 14:17Leave a good review and the comment in a review.
- 14:19I think helps to like 5 star review and be like I love the
- 14:21show or hey, well, you are the best guy ever or you're the best
- 14:27skateboarder ever, even though you don't skate as much anymore
- 14:29as you used to. But I love your show.
- 14:32Whatever whatever you want to say or you know, go SpaceX would
- 14:35be great too. I love SpaceX, so please help me
- 14:38out here. Five stars would be great.
- 14:41OK, that's it for today. And we're going to do the normal
- 14:43outro, which is like a if you like the show, subscribe.
- 14:48So here you go with that. Take care everybody.
