- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to No Dribble, the podcast where we
- 0:09Speaker 1: talk about netball, but we talk about so much more.
- 0:12Speaker 1: My name's Carol and Swindle. I'm very lonely this week.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Catherine is in the Middle East of her own volition,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and she will be returning home in a week. It
- 0:21Speaker 1: looks like she's doing a lot of things for her
- 0:23Speaker 1: own volition there that she's just loving, certainly frequenting the
- 0:27Speaker 1: cocktail bars. Of course I am joined, not in the
- 0:30Speaker 1: same room, but virtually by It's Alice.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yay, welcome.
- 0:35Speaker 3: How I am I look, I'm not in Dubai at
- 0:38Speaker 3: the cocktail bar doing a visit to Abu Dhabi. I
- 0:41Speaker 3: think that was the last thing I saw on Catherine's instagram,
- 0:43Speaker 3: so no, I am on the Northern River though, and
- 0:46Speaker 3: I have been waiting, so my fingernails are filthy. I'm
- 0:48Speaker 3: sorry about that. And I actually changed my shirt before
- 0:52Speaker 3: I came on, so that's a big concession to this podcast.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I had to put makeup on this morning because I
- 0:58Speaker 1: turned fifty six on the weekend, and at my CrossFit gym,
- 1:01Speaker 1: you have to do fifty six of something, and because
- 1:03Speaker 1: I've got a bung knee, I can't do burpie. So
- 1:05Speaker 1: I had to do fifty six handstand push ups, which
- 1:08Speaker 1: I was very happy. But I've got these blood vessels
- 1:11Speaker 1: broken on my face now looks like it looks like
- 1:15Speaker 1: Pete and I have had an argument, and but anyway
- 1:17Speaker 1: we haven't. But I've put some makeup on for that.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Happy birthday for the weak, thank.
- 1:21Speaker 1: You, thank you. Yes it was a very nice one.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm getting good at them now though.
- 1:25Speaker 3: What birthdays? Or handstand push ups? So did you just
- 1:29Speaker 3: like getting a handstand with your head down and your
- 1:31Speaker 3: legs up and do fifty six push ups? Want?
- 1:33Speaker 1: So I do do to an ab mat because that
- 1:35Speaker 1: is the master's standard now, but it was still I'm
- 1:38Speaker 1: pretty pleased with that.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Shall she go?
- 1:40Speaker 1: But we do have a guest. We have a guest.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I have a surprise for you, Liz. This is so exciting.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Well the guest was your biceps?
- 1:47Speaker 2: No, well.
- 1:50Speaker 1: No, I've actually got someone else to coverlog So yes,
- 1:53Speaker 1: we have it. We have a very special guest here today. Now,
- 1:57Speaker 1: as is standard when we have a special guest, I
- 2:00Speaker 1: ask one of my co hosts to guess who our
- 2:03Speaker 1: special guest is. You have a blindfold on. Stop picking
- 2:07Speaker 1: at it with your mud caked fingernails. Okay, our special
- 2:12Speaker 1: guest is dating Elizabeth Hurley and is the father of
- 2:16Speaker 1: Miley Cyrus and would like to take his horse to
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Old Town Road with little Nazin. I think you
- 2:25Speaker 1: know too.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, is it Richard Gear.
- 2:28Speaker 1: It's not Richard Gear? All right, No, you're going to
- 2:32Speaker 1: be so excited because it is not Billy ray Cyrus.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I just did my little bit of research just when
- 2:36Speaker 1: I didn't know this Elizabeth Hurley thing. Like Elizabeth Early
- 2:40Speaker 1: and Billy ray Cyrus, I know, I just learnt about
- 2:43Speaker 1: that this morning.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So does that mean there's only like two degrees of
- 2:46Speaker 3: separation between Like Elizabeth Hurley is the person who links
- 2:50Speaker 3: Billy ray Cyrus and Shaye Warn. I didn't see that coming.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But she also went out with Hugh Grant, Hugh Grant,
- 2:56Speaker 1: Billy ray Cyris.
- 2:57Speaker 2: So true, Yeah, she.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Doesn't have a tie.
- 3:00Speaker 1: But our guest is sitting very quietly.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Sorry, sorry, I know you want to keep talking about
- 3:04Speaker 3: who our guest is, but this is fascinating because yes,
- 3:07Speaker 3: I have a type, I.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Have a tie.
- 3:09Speaker 1: How would you be trying to set Elizabeth Hurley up
- 3:12Speaker 1: with someone you got back to you your warning, Billy
- 3:17Speaker 1: ray Cyrus here grat there's going to be more. I
- 3:20Speaker 1: think we'll take that as an action to try to
- 3:22Speaker 1: investigate who else Elizabeth Hurley has started. But our guest
- 3:26Speaker 1: today is not Billy ray Cyris. I'm delighted to report
- 3:30Speaker 1: our guest played professionally in It wasn't Supernetball then it
- 3:36Speaker 1: was a I don't know, you would tell me what
- 3:38Speaker 1: the comp is with the CBA.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yes, couple getting ten.
- 3:43Speaker 1: From the team that I am the only one who
- 3:45Speaker 1: has ever paid any money to be a member of.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So that narrows it down to one of two clubs
- 3:50Speaker 1: that I'm a member of, as you know, played for
- 3:52Speaker 1: them from nineteen ninety nine to two thousand and four.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I'm looking at the guests to tell me if I
- 3:57Speaker 1: get anything prep one premierships in two thousand and one
- 3:59Speaker 1: and two and four. Our special guest has been a
- 4:03Speaker 1: professional coach since twenty seventeen. Was the announcement started with
- 4:06Speaker 1: twenty eighteen as their first year as a professional coach,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and then went on and just coached them to a
- 4:12Speaker 1: premiership win the following year, thank you very much, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: then two years after that as well, So twenty nineteen
- 4:17Speaker 1: and twenty twenty one. Come on, you know who this is.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Our special guest is a supreme mid quarter, so doesn't
- 4:25Speaker 1: just hang around waiting for the ball to make your
- 4:27Speaker 1: way down, actually gets out there and does the work.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Our special guests lived in Sydney. Our special guest is
- 4:33Speaker 1: the current coach of the sun Corps supernetball team, the
- 4:36Speaker 1: New South Wales swift Our special guest is your very
- 4:39Speaker 1: dear friend, Brian y Acor.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Kay, if you're going to admit a guest, I was
- 4:43Speaker 3: going to say, our special guest is my hairdressers missus.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Hi home right, Hi, thanks for having me. This is exciting.
- 4:52Speaker 3: It's so exciting. Gosh, what a step up from Catherine. No,
- 4:56Speaker 3: don't even tell her I said that.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yay. I'm not in Dubai. I'm not eating a garden.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I'm I'm back at work today, Day one, back.
- 5:03Speaker 5: In swifties Land, which is a bit scary because I
- 5:06Speaker 5: realize how much work.
- 5:07Speaker 4: That I have to do now that I've had some
- 5:09Speaker 4: time off.
- 5:10Speaker 3: What did you do in your time off?
- 5:11Speaker 4: I didn't go away.
- 5:12Speaker 5: I just became the mummy again, back at home, cleaning
- 5:16Speaker 5: the house, taking drop offs, being the uber driver, just
- 5:20Speaker 5: being at home, which was actually really nice.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You've got four boys.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Oh nice? Now your twins Charlie and m Are they
- 5:30Speaker 3: seventeen this birthday or next day?
- 5:32Speaker 5: This Monday, This coming Monday, they'll be seventeen. Sebastian just
- 5:37Speaker 5: turned twenty yesterday and Carolyn.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yes, I've got four boys, so their birthdays within a
- 5:42Speaker 4: week of each other.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yes, but the twins their birthdays at day after Evelyn's birthday,
- 5:46Speaker 3: which is how I know their birthday. So they will
- 5:49Speaker 3: get their peas, will they No, they.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Will have to wait a little bit.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Having twins doing it, having to do one hundred and
- 5:55Speaker 5: twenty hours is been a of a struggle with both
- 5:58Speaker 5: of them. So one's a bit more confident than the other,
- 6:02Speaker 5: so I have to narrow that confidence back down and
- 6:04Speaker 5: tell him is not that good a driver, Charlie, even
- 6:06Speaker 5: though he thinks.
- 6:07Speaker 3: So, can I guess that that's Charlie Charlie.
- 6:11Speaker 5: So there's been a lot of moments in especially the
- 6:14Speaker 5: last month, because I'm pushing them to get in that car.
- 6:16Speaker 5: So I cannot wait for them to get their license.
- 6:18Speaker 5: It will change my world, it'll change.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Starts world my husband. It'll be amazing.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And then it's just zave to drive around.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Then those big boys will be driving to soccer training,
- 6:30Speaker 5: baseball training, friends, parties, get away.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Sommy Spratt, you said you've got to work, and you
- 6:38Speaker 3: realize there was like a lot of work to do.
- 6:40Speaker 3: What do you have to do.
- 6:41Speaker 5: So we've got a new strength and conditioning trainer, Samsey.
- 6:45Speaker 5: He's just joined today, so it's a whole new world
- 6:49Speaker 5: to him in terms of planning the netball season.
- 6:51Speaker 4: So people won't.
- 6:53Speaker 5: Know, but in the netball world we actually have to
- 6:55Speaker 5: give as soon as the draw comes out. For some
- 6:57Speaker 5: corps Super Netball, your team is supposed to have their
- 6:59Speaker 5: schedule for the next twelve months, so scheduling every training session,
- 7:04Speaker 5: every day off begins today. So they've got their first
- 7:07Speaker 5: couple next two months. The Swiss have got their training schedule.
- 7:11Speaker 5: But from today onwards, it's all about planning, planning, planning,
- 7:15Speaker 5: finding preseason games that will play, when we give them
- 7:19Speaker 5: their days off, when they're in the gym, all that
- 7:22Speaker 5: sort of stuff. So yeah, a lot of a lot
- 7:25Speaker 5: of planning that people, but we don't realize that goes
- 7:27Speaker 5: into the everyday life of the netball world.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Last year, this year, I don't even know it's last
- 7:33Speaker 1: last netball year. You did a spectacular job getting some
- 7:37Speaker 1: preseason games in New South Wales with New Zealand, and
- 7:42Speaker 1: that's interesting Briani. Obviously there's a lot that you can't
- 7:45Speaker 1: talk about there, but that's another layer of stress that
- 7:48Speaker 1: you are managing at the moment, and I guess that's
- 7:51Speaker 1: a is that an hour by hour type thing you've
- 7:54Speaker 1: got your eye on that or how do you how
- 7:56Speaker 1: do you fit this in?
- 7:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I think behind the scenes, there's it's been going
- 8:00Speaker 5: on for a little while with Noline Tarua and the
- 8:04Speaker 5: Silver Firm, so I have had a lot to do
- 8:06Speaker 5: with it in the last few months. So I can't
- 8:08Speaker 5: say a lot, but I think the good thing is
- 8:11Speaker 5: Noles is super excited to be able to get back
- 8:13Speaker 5: into that space of coaching and obviously their Seal fans
- 8:16Speaker 5: did well last night. They've played South Africa and done
- 8:18Speaker 5: a really good job. So navigating that has been a
- 8:21Speaker 5: bit challenging, very challenging obviously, but a lot of people
- 8:24Speaker 5: don't know that I was still coaching with them as
- 8:26Speaker 5: a specialist role. So obviously the focus has been about
- 8:29Speaker 5: Noles in the media and you know it is a
- 8:31Speaker 5: big deal that the Dame has been stood down, but
- 8:35Speaker 5: hopefully she'll be back in that space soon, and yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 5: she'll be back on deck.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Bro. There's been a bit don't we to say anything
- 8:41Speaker 3: or ask you to say anything that you can't, But
- 8:44Speaker 3: there's been a bit like you look at some of
- 8:46Speaker 3: the comments and I do try to not read the comments,
- 8:48Speaker 3: but some of the comments around well, why would Noline
- 8:52Speaker 3: want to go back once? If this gets resolved and
- 8:57Speaker 3: Netboard New Zealand ask coached, will she want to Yeah?
- 9:01Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 9:02Speaker 5: I think the core of Knowles is about player first,
- 9:04Speaker 5: and I think that for her, she's been behind the
- 9:08Speaker 5: scenes obviously for the past since Conslation Cup last year,
- 9:11Speaker 5: she's been planning the next two years of two years
- 9:15Speaker 5: of what that looks like leading into a World Cup,
- 9:16Speaker 5: Cometh Games and Common Cups. So she wants to get
- 9:19Speaker 5: back out there. She is a person that doesn't sit
- 9:23Speaker 5: in the crap sits there. She wants to look forward
- 9:25Speaker 5: and move on. And you know her, she's all about
- 9:29Speaker 5: that gut feel around a player and what that looks
- 9:32Speaker 5: like with the silver fan. She'll always put that silver
- 9:34Speaker 5: fan first. So no matter what's gone on, I feel
- 9:37Speaker 5: like once she is hopefully back in there, that you
- 9:41Speaker 5: know good things will come out of it. Out of
- 9:43Speaker 5: challenging situations, good things always do. You always learn something
- 9:46Speaker 5: about everybody. And I think that's the mantra that she
- 9:50Speaker 5: takes in terms of bringing the feedback. Let's work together,
- 9:54Speaker 5: and I think, you know, the netball world need New
- 9:57Speaker 5: Zealand to be amazing and great, so I think that's
- 10:00Speaker 5: where she wants it to be moving forward.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Well, they did put out a pretty good performance last night.
- 10:05Speaker 3: They beat South Africa the silver Ferns seventy seven fifty
- 10:08Speaker 3: one in that first test in Auckland. Did you catch
- 10:12Speaker 3: any of it?
- 10:12Speaker 4: I watched bits and pieces of it.
- 10:14Speaker 5: You know, they've been training hard behind the scenes, which
- 10:16Speaker 5: is what it's about, right being that professional athlete and
- 10:19Speaker 5: knowing that you've got a job to do for your country.
- 10:21Speaker 5: So I don't think. I think it was always going
- 10:22Speaker 5: to bring them together internally to say, you know, we'll
- 10:25Speaker 5: show the world that we're great nepples. And that's their
- 10:27Speaker 5: job is to get out there and do first and
- 10:30Speaker 5: foremost be a great netple out there, and I think
- 10:32Speaker 5: they did a really good job.
- 10:33Speaker 1: All I'm interested in is how did Grace go.
- 10:35Speaker 4: She was good. I didn't see her volume.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I didn't see the final stats, but she was strong,
- 10:40Speaker 1: she was good, excellent. We talked a lot about this
- 10:44Speaker 1: last week and this, and this isn't something I'm really
- 10:47Speaker 1: going to ask you to comment on specifically about New Zealand,
- 10:49Speaker 1: but like this psychological safety and try and create an
- 10:52Speaker 1: environment for young people who are in a high performance
- 10:56Speaker 1: environment where it is necessarily competitive and they are required
- 11:00Speaker 1: to have the mental strength to deal with a competitive environment.
- 11:04Speaker 1: And what a balance that is for coaches and coaching staff.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I saw you after the semi final where the Vixen's
- 11:14Speaker 1: beat the Swifts last year, and you stood there with
- 11:17Speaker 1: your arm around Grace for quite an extended period of time.
- 11:21Speaker 1: She was obviously very upset of blaming herself. And this
- 11:24Speaker 1: is you know, we are dealing with young people here.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It's an incredibly difficult balance that you have to play
- 11:30Speaker 1: there in exacting those standards from them, but also playing
- 11:33Speaker 1: that sort of pastoral care role and encouraging them and
- 11:37Speaker 1: creating a space where they feel they can take risks
- 11:39Speaker 1: and fail because if you're not willing to risk failure,
- 11:42Speaker 1: then you'll never find greatness and stuff. And it's like
- 11:45Speaker 1: that's a I think a fascinating thing for the sport,
- 11:49Speaker 1: for every sport actually to have to face.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Now from a high performance perspective, I think I don't
- 11:54Speaker 5: really want to go near the psychological fear and safety thing.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I don't even know what that's about like, to be honest,
- 11:59Speaker 4: I feel.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Like any head coach's role is to get the best
- 12:03Speaker 5: out of a player, to set up an environment that
- 12:06Speaker 5: it is competitive, and Lizzie Yuill a test to this.
- 12:08Speaker 5: You're playing the best of the best in the world
- 12:10Speaker 5: and your training sessions or the accountability to turn up
- 12:14Speaker 5: being prepared is on an athlete.
- 12:17Speaker 4: The accountability on as.
- 12:18Speaker 5: A coach to have the team strategy right and to
- 12:23Speaker 5: be able to create an environment where you know, GG
- 12:26Speaker 5: after that game that we were just talking about, was
- 12:28Speaker 5: absolutely devastated that she'd missed that shot or didn't take
- 12:30Speaker 5: the shot. Players know when they have stuffed up, they
- 12:34Speaker 5: don't need to be told in their face that you
- 12:36Speaker 5: didn't shoot that goal.
- 12:36Speaker 4: You didn't you know. I think GG will.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Remember how we responded as a performance scene for the
- 12:42Speaker 5: rest of her life or what that meant moving forward.
- 12:44Speaker 5: So in that change room after that game, you know,
- 12:47Speaker 5: she came over to me and said, I need to
- 12:49Speaker 5: talk to you. Can I talk about that shot? So
- 12:52Speaker 5: I was like, of course you can. Like that moment
- 12:54Speaker 5: didn't define her, It didn't define that game. There was
- 12:57Speaker 5: probably seven minutes before that that the train was coming
- 13:00Speaker 5: and we couldn't push it back. So, you know, I
- 13:03Speaker 5: feel like any coach has that. You know, you work
- 13:06Speaker 5: together like the whole time and if you don't, the
- 13:10Speaker 5: whole world can see it. And I feel like, you know,
- 13:13Speaker 5: it's a fine line to say what that psychological safety is?
- 13:16Speaker 4: What does that even mean? I don't know. I feel
- 13:19Speaker 4: like in.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Every environment this might sound a bit contradictive, but there
- 13:24Speaker 5: is a level of fear going into a high performance team.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Because you don't want to stuff up.
- 13:28Speaker 5: You want to do your best every single time, and
- 13:31Speaker 5: there will be confrontation in terms of did you do
- 13:33Speaker 5: your job?
- 13:34Speaker 4: I always say did I do my job?
- 13:36Speaker 5: As a coach? Did I make the right change? Like
- 13:38Speaker 5: I always say, it's easy from the cheap seats. I
- 13:40Speaker 5: come home and my boys will certainly tell me that
- 13:42Speaker 5: I've made the wrong changes.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Well what did you do that for? I'm like, I
- 13:47Speaker 4: don't know. Don't ask me that now, let me have
- 13:49Speaker 4: time to think about it.
- 13:50Speaker 5: But you know from my perspective, and I can only
- 13:53Speaker 5: speak from my perspective as a coach. There is that
- 13:56Speaker 5: fine line between setting the record straight around how you
- 13:59Speaker 5: should have played a game to the reality that they're
- 14:01Speaker 5: a human, They've got feelings and if everyone out there listening,
- 14:05Speaker 5: they do get on social media and see all those comments.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Even though you tell them not to go near it,
- 14:09Speaker 4: they certainly get on there. But it's a crazy world.
- 14:13Speaker 5: But I feel like any high performing team or coach
- 14:16Speaker 5: will say there is tension all the time in a
- 14:20Speaker 5: high performance team, right.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I mean, we obviously played together back in the day
- 14:25Speaker 3: and Julie Fitzgerald was our coach, and then after we
- 14:29Speaker 3: finished playing, you had a couple of different jobs, but
- 14:32Speaker 3: you always had this idea of coaching, so you came
- 14:35Speaker 3: through the junior ranks. You coach the New South Wales
- 14:38Speaker 3: under seventeens or nineteens.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Or seventeens nineteens.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so you sort of did that apprenticeship.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Yeap.
- 14:45Speaker 3: When you look back now to how our team operated
- 14:49Speaker 3: in the early two thousands to the way your team
- 14:51Speaker 3: operates now, has coaching changed. Is there something fundamentally different
- 14:55Speaker 3: or is it still the same and it's just the
- 14:57Speaker 3: bits around the outside are different.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I don't feel like there's that much that has changed.
- 15:03Speaker 5: What I do feel like is how the coach interacts
- 15:06Speaker 5: with this generation in terms of the expectation, is a
- 15:09Speaker 5: little bit different. We didn't have the social media, we
- 15:11Speaker 5: didn't have the constant commentary around our games.
- 15:14Speaker 4: We could go.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Home, we went to work.
- 15:15Speaker 5: We had other people to interact with, and you know
- 15:20Speaker 5: that's really important here at the Swifts. A lot of
- 15:21Speaker 5: them still have their jobs, like Sarah Cloud occupational therapists,
- 15:25Speaker 5: Maddie Turner's a speech therapist, so they go off into
- 15:27Speaker 5: their own worlds.
- 15:28Speaker 4: And still have that balance.
- 15:29Speaker 5: But I feel like this generation of players don't have
- 15:32Speaker 5: to work the majority of them, So I feel like
- 15:34Speaker 5: the team environment, Lizzie, the stuff that we did hasn't
- 15:37Speaker 5: really changed that much, But how you interact and how
- 15:40Speaker 5: you know, you sit down and set the expectations maybe
- 15:43Speaker 5: a little bit different. Because we're here every day. I
- 15:46Speaker 5: think in preseason they get one day off. I feel
- 15:49Speaker 5: like we didn't didn't train that hart, Lizzie. Do we
- 15:53Speaker 5: like we every day?
- 15:56Speaker 3: We did mix up training hard and playing hard and
- 16:01Speaker 3: having fun. I think much more so than what the
- 16:05Speaker 3: like I think, I look at the way that the
- 16:07Speaker 3: players are now, and they're so professional, and they're so
- 16:11Speaker 3: they're so much better than we ever were. I mean,
- 16:15Speaker 3: we thought we were professional, but you're right, we also
- 16:17Speaker 3: had jobs, and so netball was what you did with
- 16:19Speaker 3: your mates, and even though we were sort of high performance,
- 16:21Speaker 3: there was still a bit of fun. These players now, like,
- 16:24Speaker 3: they're amazing. There's so much more professional than we were.
- 16:27Speaker 4: I go to tell stories about what, oh we used
- 16:30Speaker 4: to now, I.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Go, oh, I can't say that right, and I just changed.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Oh we used to like, yeah, recover the next day.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Very different recovery. Yes, I imagine aren't packing their bags
- 16:47Speaker 3: when they go to the game to play in Perth
- 16:49Speaker 3: and then going straight from the game to the nightclub
- 16:50Speaker 3: and getting their manager to pick them up from the
- 16:52Speaker 3: nightclub and drive them to the airport, for example. I
- 16:55Speaker 3: would wager that's not happening anymore with spray.
- 16:58Speaker 4: No or someone.
- 16:59Speaker 5: I remember certain player in our team being locked out
- 17:02Speaker 5: because the doors were closed, but we had to get
- 17:03Speaker 5: to the airport because I was still coming back from
- 17:05Speaker 5: going out.
- 17:06Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, that's so true, But you got to
- 17:10Speaker 4: back it up.
- 17:10Speaker 5: By doing well, right, and I feel like we won
- 17:13Speaker 5: a few games.
- 17:14Speaker 3: You know, yeah we did.
- 17:15Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, yeah, you did. You did well?
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yes, I did very well. But you know, people talk
- 17:21Speaker 3: to me now about what an amazing coach Brian is
- 17:24Speaker 3: and I'm like, what you people don't understand is should
- 17:28Speaker 3: he said, She looks like but it doesn't melt in
- 17:31Speaker 3: her mouth. But I was always the one that got
- 17:33Speaker 3: in trouble that you started. You started it and then
- 17:36Speaker 3: would have this really sweet smile on your face and
- 17:38Speaker 3: I would go on with it, and I would be
- 17:40Speaker 3: the one to get in trouble.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Well, well you should have gone on with it, Elizabeth.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Yeah, no, your limited it.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I don't care who started it. I'm finishing it. Something
- 18:05Speaker 1: big that did happen. And we've been waiting for an
- 18:07Speaker 1: announcement on an ownership change on one of the teams.
- 18:10Speaker 1: But I was a bit surprised that we've had an
- 18:12Speaker 1: announcement about an ownership change of another one I didn't
- 18:15Speaker 1: see coming.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yes, so's Melbourne Storm no longer own Sunshine Coast Lightning.
- 18:21Speaker 3: So the ownership now of Sunshine Coast Lightning sits with
- 18:24Speaker 3: Global Sport Management and they'll become the new license holder
- 18:28Speaker 3: from the first of October. So Global Sports Management owned
- 18:33Speaker 3: a couple of teams, so they own the Newcastle Jets.
- 18:36Speaker 3: They also own the Ottawa Blackjacks, which is a basketball
- 18:39Speaker 3: team in Canada. Justin Pasco. One of the owners lives
- 18:43Speaker 3: up on the Sunshine Coast and was really keen to
- 18:45Speaker 3: sort of get involved a in netball and b to
- 18:50Speaker 3: have a franchise near where he lives. So yeah, sort
- 18:53Speaker 3: of exciting times for Lightning in terms of just a
- 18:58Speaker 3: bit of a rejuvenation of the ownership, and that just
- 19:00Speaker 3: seems storm step back from ownership.
- 19:03Speaker 1: It's just exciting when someone says I want this and
- 19:05Speaker 1: I'm in, and you think, well, great, they're going to
- 19:07Speaker 1: do something good. I will at this moment do my
- 19:10Speaker 1: weekly read from Foolish Words, the most stupid words ever spoken.
- 19:14Speaker 1: And my advice to the new ownership of the Sunshine
- 19:16Speaker 1: Coast Lightning comes from Samuel Goldwyn from the movie Business
- 19:20Speaker 1: Metro Goldwen May and he said, don't improve it.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Into a flop.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So that would be I think good advice for the
- 19:27Speaker 1: new owners at the Sunshine Coast Lightning.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Don't improve it into a flop. And I look and
- 19:32Speaker 3: I think that's a really good market up there. They've
- 19:34Speaker 3: got significant support. You can't get a ticket to a
- 19:37Speaker 3: game for love nor money. Great corporate support. They've got
- 19:42Speaker 3: that partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast. So
- 19:46Speaker 3: I'm really excited to see sort of what the next
- 19:48Speaker 3: iteration is for Lightning and what Global Sports Management do
- 19:52Speaker 3: with it.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I'm trying to organize my social life for next year.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I love getting the draw out nice and early, and
- 19:58Speaker 1: I've got a group of girlfriends and we we went
- 20:00Speaker 1: to Melbourne and this year it's like where will we
- 20:03Speaker 1: go for our weekend away? And it's like, well, we'll
- 20:05Speaker 1: go wherever I want to go to a Super Netball game.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And I was looking at Noosart but it's like, well,
- 20:10Speaker 1: we probably can't get tickets for the Sunshine Case, so
- 20:12Speaker 1: let's you know, let's not go there. So maybe Adelaide,
- 20:16Speaker 1: maybe Melbourne again.
- 20:17Speaker 3: I mean, I'm still working really hard to try and
- 20:19Speaker 3: get the Grand Final to I don't know, like Bali
- 20:22Speaker 3: or Hayman Island or something like that.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Hamilton Island is what I asked.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Sorry my mistakes, Bridy, where would you like it to be?
- 20:30Speaker 4: Maybe Hawaii or something like that.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Guys contractually obliged to say Sydney, No, not really didn't
- 20:40Speaker 3: they years ago used to be like a like a
- 20:43Speaker 3: participation event in Hawaii. Wasn't there Hawaiian Netball Carnival?
- 20:47Speaker 4: Yeah, something like that. I remember that. Did you go that?
- 20:51Speaker 3: Used to go to it and I was like, how
- 20:52Speaker 3: do I get a gig to that? But by the
- 20:54Speaker 3: time I had a big enough profile, it was like
- 20:55Speaker 3: beach netball, wasn't it? Wasn't there a beach netball tournament?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Oh?
- 20:59Speaker 3: No? That was that was on the Gold Coast.
- 21:01Speaker 4: That was netfest?
- 21:04Speaker 2: Was that on sand?
- 21:05Speaker 3: Beach netball would commonly be on sand?
- 21:07Speaker 4: Yes?
- 21:09Speaker 2: Wow?
- 21:10Speaker 1: How do you deal with stepping?
- 21:12Speaker 4: There's no stepping?
- 21:13Speaker 3: There's no stepping? You know, well, you don't step because
- 21:15Speaker 3: it's too hard. I played beach netball and it was
- 21:17Speaker 3: really hard. Your feet's sinking. It's actually hard to get
- 21:20Speaker 3: got to stop.
- 21:32Speaker 1: We will come back to some more netball talk. But Liz,
- 21:35Speaker 1: speaking of high performance, you had a weekend of excellence.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I believe I.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Did have a weekend. Actually, I've had a week of excellence.
- 21:42Speaker 3: So you will remember we talked about the team that
- 21:46Speaker 3: I coach winning the Grand Final last Saturday, and I
- 21:49Speaker 3: must say my week has continued on in the same vey.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I had to go to Sydney for some meetings on Wednesday,
- 21:57Speaker 3: and I wore white pants all day, no stains.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Nice work.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Can I tell you what an achievement that is? Because
- 22:05Speaker 3: I am a grot so I often do see Catherine
- 22:08Speaker 3: get into commentary with her white suit, and I always
- 22:10Speaker 3: send her a message and go, oh, that's brave, because
- 22:13Speaker 3: when you're sitting on the sideline, there's coffee, there's tea.
- 22:15Speaker 1: There's follies, and sometimes there's players colliding with the table
- 22:19Speaker 1: that she's sitting at trying to do the commentary right.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Exactly right. I think white suit is just like saying
- 22:24Speaker 3: to the universe, come at me with all your filth. Right.
- 22:27Speaker 3: So anyway, Catherine seems to go okay, But this is
- 22:30Speaker 3: a woman who when you're at her house, she vacuums
- 22:33Speaker 3: after what you're still there.
- 22:35Speaker 5: I was just saying, your feet lift up off the
- 22:37Speaker 5: table because she's got the vacuum cleaner out, are you.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Still exactly right? Whereas I vacuum sometime in the month
- 22:42Speaker 3: after my guest sleeve right, So that's actually, let's be clear,
- 22:47Speaker 3: I don't vacuum. I have I pay someone to vacuum,
- 22:49Speaker 3: so you.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Should get a robot vacuum cleaner. It's the greatest guy. Yeah,
- 22:55Speaker 1: although I swear to God, this thing is learned, like
- 22:57Speaker 1: it will come and find us wherever we are in
- 22:59Speaker 1: the house. When it's on, it's like you're not a
- 23:02Speaker 1: sentient being. You don't need company. It's like a small
- 23:04Speaker 1: dog that it's like, what the hell are you doing
- 23:06Speaker 1: in here?
- 23:06Speaker 2: And go over there?
- 23:07Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 23:08Speaker 2: I love it that.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Yeah, so look that was that was quite the achievement.
- 23:12Speaker 2: White pants. Nice.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Nice. And then I got home and my husband said
- 23:19Speaker 3: that the washing machine's not working. Now I don't have
- 23:22Speaker 3: I'm no good mechanically anything mechanical. I've got no idea.
- 23:25Speaker 3: But he was like the washing machine stopped, and then
- 23:28Speaker 3: he went outside and was like being a farmer for
- 23:31Speaker 3: the whole day and I needed to washing. So I
- 23:34Speaker 3: fixed the washing machine. Nice?
- 23:38Speaker 2: Why did that?
- 23:38Speaker 1: The day we went to Europe it broke and it's
- 23:40Speaker 1: a front loader, so you know it fills with water
- 23:42Speaker 1: and so you can't break in it. Then, and so
- 23:45Speaker 1: I got on YouTube looked at a video workout how
- 23:48Speaker 1: did it? The problem is, though I had to twist
- 23:50Speaker 1: the drain thing and I bug at attendance. So I'm
- 23:53Speaker 1: now six months of wrist pain, but I still every
- 23:55Speaker 1: time the wrist hurts, I think, yeah, but I fixed
- 23:57Speaker 1: the washing machine. God, it's a strong sense of achieving, man,
- 24:00Speaker 1: isn't it?
- 24:01Speaker 3: Isn't it? It felt felt good. I think we might
- 24:03Speaker 3: have had the same problem. I had to twist it off.
- 24:05Speaker 3: But what I didn't understand or didn't think about, was
- 24:07Speaker 3: when you twist this drain thing off in a front loader,
- 24:10Speaker 3: the water comes out, and.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Then I mocked the floor.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Yeah, everything else around it has been drenched. But anyway,
- 24:19Speaker 3: so it was quite a big high performance week for me,
- 24:21Speaker 3: and I feel like I don't feel like the people
- 24:24Speaker 3: around me. I my family really celebrated it enough, so
- 24:27Speaker 3: I thought I'd bring it here and just you know,
- 24:29Speaker 3: just celebrate it.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Well, we're proud of you, Lizzie.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Well done, Lizzie.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I'm sorry Cat's not here for this momentous announcement.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Well, she would probably pour scorn on me because she
- 24:39Speaker 3: wears white all the time and doesn't get it dirty.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I see if I does on Instagram, She's like, she's
- 24:43Speaker 3: all white.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I had a moderate performance weekend, but I did go
- 24:48Speaker 1: to indoor summer netball on Saturday morning, and I sat
- 24:52Speaker 1: and I chatted through the whole game, which was great.
- 24:55Speaker 1: But interestingly, oh and while I've got you here, Brianie,
- 24:58Speaker 1: I'm going to ask you for some advice. So you
- 25:01Speaker 1: may have heard that my little under twelve team did
- 25:04Speaker 1: not thrive this year. We came home with one draw
- 25:07Speaker 1: in the final game, which was honestly like winning a
- 25:10Speaker 1: World cup, is how it felt. I did cry.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I was very exciting.
- 25:13Speaker 1: But I had four of those girls playing in the
- 25:16Speaker 1: team on the weekend in this indoor comp and we're
- 25:19Speaker 1: playing with the team. The rest of the team are
- 25:21Speaker 1: girls who are much better than mine. They're all the
- 25:23Speaker 1: reps and development plays. But my four got in there
- 25:26Speaker 1: held their own. Yeah, it's great, And this is what
- 25:29Speaker 1: puzzled me all through the season. It's like my team
- 25:33Speaker 1: weren't hopeless. They just didn't come together as a team.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And you know, when you've got an hour a week,
- 25:40Speaker 1: which I extended to an hour and a half a week,
- 25:42Speaker 1: you know their skills were right.
- 25:44Speaker 2: We were doing that.
- 25:44Speaker 1: But it's like, when you've got a team who aren't
- 25:47Speaker 1: doing what they need to do in the moment, what
- 25:50Speaker 1: can you do as a coach, like, what's your You know,
- 25:53Speaker 1: swearing didn't work. Apparently you just.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Wish for the best sometimes, you know, I've had a
- 25:59Speaker 5: couple of those seasons where all the training is perfect.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Sometimes I've started a game and I've looked at my
- 26:05Speaker 5: assistant coach going. People in this stadium are going to
- 26:07Speaker 5: think that we have not trained once, and I really
- 26:12Speaker 5: want to hold up a sign and say, look, we've
- 26:14Speaker 5: been working hard.
- 26:15Speaker 3: It's would you like a sign that says not my fault?
- 26:18Speaker 3: When the two.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Might just hold it up without even smiling to the
- 26:25Speaker 5: crowd that they could, they just slowly hold it up,
- 26:29Speaker 5: put it down. Because there are moments where, probably in
- 26:33Speaker 5: the semi final this year, that I did want the
- 26:35Speaker 5: ground to open a meter.
- 26:37Speaker 1: You know, maybe those big foam fingers that they have
- 26:40Speaker 1: at stadiums, maybe you could get another one made with
- 26:43Speaker 1: a different finger. I can just use that for the audience, for.
- 26:49Speaker 2: My team or for the audi crowd.
- 26:50Speaker 1: It's just back off, we're doing our best.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Right When you in that semi final, I know we
- 26:56Speaker 3: were supposed to have sort of closed off talking about netball,
- 26:59Speaker 3: but you know you mentioned it as in that last
- 27:02Speaker 3: quarter as like could you did you just feel like
- 27:06Speaker 3: it was almost inevitable as the Vixen's came back, or
- 27:08Speaker 3: you really like, oh, look they're coming back, We're okay.
- 27:11Speaker 4: My gut was like, oh, this is not going to
- 27:15Speaker 4: end well.
- 27:16Speaker 5: We've got half the Diamonds team that have just started
- 27:19Speaker 5: to decided just to click into gear.
- 27:22Speaker 4: I was like, with the I don't know about this.
- 27:26Speaker 4: That's exactly how I felt.
- 27:27Speaker 5: I was like, come on, come on, it's just one goal.
- 27:31Speaker 5: Surely we can hold this out. That's what I was thinking.
- 27:35Speaker 5: But I thought Vixen's I was like, look at the
- 27:37Speaker 5: team you have, like full credit, you're an amazing.
- 27:40Speaker 1: You must have been so proud after the girls the
- 27:42Speaker 1: week before, like that that what they had suffered the
- 27:45Speaker 1: week before with the fever, to be able to come
- 27:47Speaker 1: back and put that on on court, like you must
- 27:51Speaker 1: have just been bursting with bride.
- 27:53Speaker 2: It was.
- 27:54Speaker 1: It was a shame. I think it looked to me
- 27:57Speaker 1: like the right outcome for that game. At the Vixen's,
- 27:59Speaker 1: I think deserve to win it, and clearly we saw
- 28:01Speaker 1: what they went on and did. But I was just
- 28:03Speaker 1: so happy for the Swifts that they came back and
- 28:05Speaker 1: it's like, you girls, you had a rough week last week,
- 28:08Speaker 1: but you've put that behind you. You must have just
- 28:11Speaker 1: been bursting with pride at that.
- 28:13Speaker 5: I feel like getting beaten by walls at thirty five
- 28:15Speaker 5: whatever it was, that is tough. And to turn back
- 28:18Speaker 5: up on Monday and go, what are we going to do?
- 28:20Speaker 5: You know, same same but different in terms of we
- 28:22Speaker 5: know we're great netballers, we can play this game. How
- 28:25Speaker 5: do you get them back into a space of we're
- 28:28Speaker 5: doing this? This is that's gone, this is moving forward.
- 28:33Speaker 5: And you know, I am super proud because you know,
- 28:35Speaker 5: three quarters that game we're ten up to come back
- 28:37Speaker 5: from against world's best, and I think what it's done
- 28:41Speaker 5: is giving me real confidence for next season to go
- 28:45Speaker 5: we finished off like this. I think you know I
- 28:48Speaker 5: said it a thousand times. People forget that grace WEEKI
- 28:51Speaker 5: is twenty three. You know, world's best shooters are not
- 28:54Speaker 5: the world's best when they are twenty three.
- 28:57Speaker 4: So all those little things.
- 28:59Speaker 5: I was really proud, the fact that, you know, heartbreaking, heartbreaking,
- 29:03Speaker 5: but you know, you learn a lot from those sort
- 29:05Speaker 5: of losses and moving forward.
- 29:07Speaker 3: So do you guys, when when you get the team back,
- 29:09Speaker 3: do you sit down and look at that game or
- 29:11Speaker 3: is it done and dusted. Have you dealt with it?
- 29:13Speaker 3: And going like what do you do about to sort
- 29:15Speaker 3: of underline it and move on?
- 29:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel like maybe the leadership group and us
- 29:21Speaker 5: as coaches will look at that and go, what are
- 29:22Speaker 5: key moments or key thoughts that we can take moving
- 29:25Speaker 5: into next season because a lot goes on right from
- 29:28Speaker 5: July we finish until we play until March.
- 29:31Speaker 4: I'll be like, you're going to take us back to
- 29:32Speaker 4: that game in July like that we certainly.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Moved on and wanting to know, you know, like today
- 29:40Speaker 5: I'm sitting here thinking.
- 29:41Speaker 4: Like refreshed, I'm excited. What can we do?
- 29:44Speaker 5: And that's what I need to take into when they
- 29:45Speaker 5: come back in you know, November, December, January, because it's
- 29:48Speaker 5: all scattered, right because players, different players come.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Back at different times.
- 29:52Speaker 5: I don't think I have my full team together until
- 29:55Speaker 5: beginning of feb is when not really mid mid gen,
- 29:59Speaker 5: depending on what Helen does with her the Roses.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Because what's first game sight the fourteenth of March or
- 30:05Speaker 1: something isn't Wow.
- 30:06Speaker 4: I think we probably have six weeks together as a
- 30:08Speaker 4: full full teen.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Wow.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Yeah. We do talk about a long off season, but
- 30:14Speaker 3: so much of that off season is taken up with internationals,
- 30:19Speaker 3: and then they.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Have a forced break, right, they have to they have
- 30:22Speaker 4: to have.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Time away, So you've got to factor that in that
- 30:26Speaker 5: some players need their break and their break will be
- 30:28Speaker 5: in November December, so.
- 30:30Speaker 3: It's yeah, right. And then some players like the girls
- 30:33Speaker 3: who aren't playing internationals, have they already had their break
- 30:36Speaker 3: and they're back now.
- 30:38Speaker 5: No, they'll be back mid October for the Swifties, which
- 30:41Speaker 5: is not that far away, right, But we won't touch
- 30:43Speaker 5: a netbule until November. It'll be in the gym, conditioning
- 30:47Speaker 5: and in the gym. And then we try, like when
- 30:50Speaker 5: we think about we're talking about it today, try and
- 30:52Speaker 5: keep them fresh. They don't want to be coming to
- 30:54Speaker 5: Netball Central every day from now until March, so just
- 30:58Speaker 5: mixing up our venues or go and train all that.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Sort of thing.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I saw a lot of them were out at associations
- 31:05Speaker 1: on the weekend, grand final presentations and things. That's great.
- 31:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I love that going back and connecting with the
- 31:12Speaker 5: grassroots and remembering why you play.
- 31:14Speaker 3: And that's one of the things that like that ball
- 31:19Speaker 3: has that you know, some other competitions don't write. There
- 31:22Speaker 3: is there's a straight line from the grassroots through the
- 31:24Speaker 3: super netball and the into the diamonds. But it's interesting
- 31:27Speaker 3: to talk about, you know what the plays on court
- 31:30Speaker 3: straight away because it's a long sort of preseason. I'm
- 31:33Speaker 3: just wondering maybe if you can reflect on, you know,
- 31:37Speaker 3: some of the coaches who influenced you. And there's two
- 31:41Speaker 3: that really stand out to me. One is the great
- 31:44Speaker 3: Carol Sykes, you know, who was your underage coach and
- 31:48Speaker 3: I used to play back in the days we were
- 31:51Speaker 3: played state league. I played for Kareinga and we used
- 31:53Speaker 3: to our our enemies were ram Week and Carol was
- 31:56Speaker 3: the coach and my husband used to go along and
- 31:58Speaker 3: not watch the game. I used to watch her because
- 32:00Speaker 3: she was so entertaining on the sideline right, And so
- 32:06Speaker 3: I reflect on her and then Mark Corbett, who sadly
- 32:09Speaker 3: passed away recently, and the thing and I never got
- 32:12Speaker 3: coached by Carol, but so I saw her from a distance.
- 32:16Speaker 3: But I was coached by Mark and she had a
- 32:18Speaker 3: team in the new South Wales team that was like
- 32:22Speaker 3: I came in at the tail end of there was
- 32:25Speaker 3: a bit of a dynasty and I think we won
- 32:27Speaker 3: like ten national titles in a Royals that's the Golden Boot.
- 32:31Speaker 3: The Golden Boot. Yeah, so back in the day, in
- 32:34Speaker 3: the late eighties and sort of through to the mid
- 32:37Speaker 3: nineties or actually in the early eighties, it was sponsored
- 32:40Speaker 3: the whole it was sponsored by Dunlop and we used
- 32:43Speaker 3: to play for the Golden Boot. It was a trophy
- 32:46Speaker 3: that was I mean, I don't think it was pure gold.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Might have been I don't know, well, I might have
- 32:51Speaker 3: been a shoe sprayed with gold paper.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Here Lizzie, actually Wales, it's here somewhere.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, you're mission today is to take a photo,
- 33:00Speaker 3: said it to Caroline so she can put it up
- 33:01Speaker 3: on the Facebook page. So that'd be great. But Corby
- 33:05Speaker 3: used to get like so that team was just full
- 33:08Speaker 3: of like umbell ever players like Nick Cuzak, Carrissa dalwood Is,
- 33:12Speaker 3: Chris Tom's, Keiley Devy So Kenny, Sharon Finn and Unbelieving
- 33:17Speaker 3: wore News South Wales team Katrina Wag. Everyone came in
- 33:20Speaker 3: together and by the time we got to nationals everyone
- 33:24Speaker 3: had played like state league internationals and so she would
- 33:27Speaker 3: often like my first year in we did no netball training.
- 33:31Speaker 3: We just went and trained with Johnny Lewis. Remember the
- 33:33Speaker 3: boxing trainer. We just did a month of boxing training
- 33:37Speaker 3: and then a few netball drills at the end, and
- 33:39Speaker 3: then the next time I came in, she had us
- 33:41Speaker 3: doing this sword fighting like she would just always do
- 33:46Speaker 3: things out of the box. So now that you're we're
- 33:48Speaker 3: in a different era, right, a professional area, do you
- 33:50Speaker 3: still look for stuff like that? Do you still channel
- 33:52Speaker 3: Corby or Psyche and and just go, you know, what
- 33:56Speaker 3: would Carol do? What would Corby do?
- 33:58Speaker 4: So Carol for me was all about feel and passion
- 34:03Speaker 4: for the WARRITI and she was all about the basics.
- 34:06Speaker 5: So her she I don't think she was strategic, strategic,
- 34:09Speaker 5: but very much aligne along the lines of I remember
- 34:12Speaker 5: playing for her and I think they changed the rule.
- 34:14Speaker 4: About your foot on the line or being back off
- 34:16Speaker 4: the line, and she's.
- 34:17Speaker 5: Like, if any of you get a call about your
- 34:19Speaker 5: foot on the line or you break stuff, you you'll
- 34:22Speaker 5: be off. And I think I broke on the first
- 34:24Speaker 5: center path and I could see her fist.
- 34:26Speaker 4: At me, like shaking stuff you, Brian. She used to
- 34:29Speaker 4: say stuff all the time. That was her like way
- 34:32Speaker 4: words to us.
- 34:33Speaker 5: When you're sixteen, we explored her because you knew exactly
- 34:36Speaker 5: where you stood with her. It was like you do
- 34:39Speaker 5: the basics or you're out of here. But at the
- 34:42Speaker 5: end of those nationals, I think she lived in Sutherland
- 34:45Speaker 5: and a group of us from the Hills District got
- 34:48Speaker 5: on We were like, we really missed you, Carol. So
- 34:51Speaker 5: we got on a bus and a train and we
- 34:53Speaker 5: went to her house after Nationals because it was so
- 34:55Speaker 5: down that we weren't going to see her. Because she
- 34:57Speaker 5: was with the seniors. She was just like loving it, lorgeous,
- 35:00Speaker 5: she was divine. And then Corby, I think, yes, we
- 35:04Speaker 5: do challenge them, you know, channel her sort of Even
- 35:06Speaker 5: today we're saying, do we go and do a judo
- 35:09Speaker 5: session because.
- 35:09Speaker 4: It's all about abs and strength and.
- 35:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I've heard so many stories about Corby just being
- 35:16Speaker 5: you know, twenty years ahead of the coaching world in
- 35:19Speaker 5: terms of how she thought, like doing dance classes for
- 35:21Speaker 5: your footwork, and you know people still.
- 35:23Speaker 4: Talk about that.
- 35:24Speaker 5: So you know, she was way ahead of her time
- 35:26Speaker 5: in terms of high performance and thinking.
- 35:28Speaker 4: And I think she should get more credit for that
- 35:30Speaker 4: in the coaching world.
- 35:31Speaker 5: I don't think people speak enough of Corby's achievements and
- 35:35Speaker 5: what she's done in sport.
- 35:36Speaker 3: I agree, and she sadly died this year just before
- 35:40Speaker 3: the state championships, and so I think her niece got
- 35:44Speaker 3: up and spoke about her in the opening ceremony, and
- 35:47Speaker 3: I was there and I was just reflecting thinking about
- 35:50Speaker 3: how she just changed. Like the great coaches are the
- 35:54Speaker 3: ones who step outside and think really differently. Joyce Brown
- 35:58Speaker 3: was like that, you know, Joyce. One summer she went
- 36:01Speaker 3: to the tennis and hand tied with a stop watch
- 36:04Speaker 3: every tennis player when they started moving with their feet
- 36:06Speaker 3: and when they stopped, and then got all of her
- 36:09Speaker 3: players and watched us and did a hand timing as
- 36:12Speaker 3: well to give us like the correlations. And then she
- 36:17Speaker 3: went away and made a heap of footwork drills based
- 36:19Speaker 3: on the data. Right. And so now as a coach,
- 36:23Speaker 3: of course, every coach wants data, and she was manually
- 36:27Speaker 3: collecting her own data across different sports. Now you just
- 36:29Speaker 3: in put it into a software package and it would
- 36:32Speaker 3: get spat out. But Joyce like she really yeah, like
- 36:36Speaker 3: she but she really sat back as she really thought
- 36:39Speaker 3: outside the square. And I do wonder, and you might
- 36:43Speaker 3: be the best place to sort of to talk about this,
- 36:47Speaker 3: but I wonder if like the drive to professionalism puts
- 36:50Speaker 3: players and coaches in boxes that you're almost you know,
- 36:53Speaker 3: to fail, right, so you don't step outside. It was
- 36:55Speaker 3: back in the day Korby had the freedom to do
- 36:57Speaker 3: that because you know, it wasn't a full time on
- 37:00Speaker 3: professional sport. She could go away and try something and
- 37:02Speaker 3: if it didn't work, well, she had a good enough
- 37:04Speaker 3: team that they'd probably sort of figure it out. So yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 3: I wonder if I wonder if we can still if
- 37:10Speaker 3: we still have the ability for that to happen.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we do.
- 37:13Speaker 5: I think like even with our you know, when someone
- 37:15Speaker 5: new comes into our environment, why do netballs just automatically
- 37:18Speaker 5: stand on the baseline, like, go stand on the baseline,
- 37:21Speaker 5: like everything's just.
- 37:22Speaker 4: So netball, Like I always joke about it, Oh.
- 37:25Speaker 5: So netball, Like if you can think something differently besides that,
- 37:29Speaker 5: let's try it, like go dot on the sidelines and
- 37:31Speaker 5: run across that way, like it's so simple.
- 37:34Speaker 4: But you have a.
- 37:35Speaker 5: Pageadley's like, oh my gosh, do I have to go
- 37:37Speaker 5: stand on that baseline again? But just thelighter netball. It's
- 37:41Speaker 5: just like this traumatic experience in the off season. But yes, Lizzie,
- 37:45Speaker 5: I think there is still space for that.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Well, Briani You're welcome to use my patented mcflurry method
- 37:53Speaker 1: if you would like to. I don't think it really works,
- 37:57Speaker 1: but you might. You might find that it works better
- 38:00Speaker 1: where you've got people who are winning games. You must
- 38:07Speaker 1: be a little bit worried about Grace.
- 38:09Speaker 2: White at the moment, though I certainly am.
- 38:11Speaker 5: For sure that was she took a big fall this morning, masterly,
- 38:16Speaker 5: so we're sort of still waiting for some news on
- 38:19Speaker 5: the early hours of the morning.
- 38:20Speaker 4: I think there now.
- 38:21Speaker 3: So so this is in relation to the World With
- 38:23Speaker 3: Cup which is underway in Gibraltar and Australia have had
- 38:28Speaker 3: two wins from their first two games, which is really exciting.
- 38:32Speaker 3: But again, the game against Singapore, I think this morning
- 38:36Speaker 3: Grace White took a nasty fall, which I think Daryl's
- 38:39Speaker 3: posted it on our Carolyn did you post I don't know.
- 38:42Speaker 3: I don't know who's Darls posted on our face.
- 38:45Speaker 1: He's way ahead of me.
- 38:47Speaker 3: But yes, so, Brian, do you look at that and go,
- 38:50Speaker 3: oh yeah, I do.
- 38:52Speaker 5: First and foremost I feel for her, just you know,
- 38:56Speaker 5: the thought that she may even not be able to
- 38:57Speaker 5: finish the tournament is big. The thought that she's had
- 39:00Speaker 5: an amazing year being part of a World Youth car
- 39:03Speaker 5: power exciting. So yeah, I think we'll just wait and
- 39:07Speaker 5: see at the moment how bad that is. But the
- 39:09Speaker 5: fall did definitely look nasty. It was in the first
- 39:11Speaker 5: quarter of the game. It's not looking great.
- 39:15Speaker 1: What's the head injury protocol here? What's the concussion process?
- 39:18Speaker 5: So normally in sun Court superfle you do a think
- 39:21Speaker 5: called a SCAP test and beginning either of your doctor
- 39:23Speaker 5: and it's basically a baseline of all testing like count
- 39:26Speaker 5: to ten, you know, say the months of the year backwards,
- 39:29Speaker 5: all that sort of stuff. So she would have come
- 39:31Speaker 5: off that court straight away with the doctors and done
- 39:33Speaker 5: that SCAT test and reviewed it. I'm not sure, depending
- 39:37Speaker 5: on probably the campaign lengths, right, so sun Court I
- 39:40Speaker 5: think would be two weeks, not quite score. What the
- 39:43Speaker 5: exact rule is in World Youth cut depending on games
- 39:46Speaker 5: and how long it goes for.
- 39:48Speaker 3: But yeah, the finals on the twenty eighth of September.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Okay, that's yeah, six days, that's not that's not even
- 39:55Speaker 1: a week.
- 39:56Speaker 5: She's got headaches, if she's feeling sick, all that sort
- 39:58Speaker 5: of stuff, so it'll be symptoms B and then the sket.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Test at the start, So do you guys do like
- 40:04Speaker 3: a like a baseline test at the start of every
- 40:07Speaker 3: season and the medical guys have access to that.
- 40:12Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, and our medical staff are already in contact
- 40:15Speaker 5: with the Australian team as well. So there's a baselinees
- 40:19Speaker 5: on ams. It's called athlete management system that the staff
- 40:23Speaker 5: will be able to dial into and talk about her
- 40:26Speaker 5: baseline compared to her what she will be now.
- 40:29Speaker 1: So there's still two teams who haven't even arrived for
- 40:32Speaker 1: the World Cup, So Zambia and Sri Lanka are on
- 40:34Speaker 1: the verge of potentially being just disqualified from the World
- 40:37Speaker 1: Cup because they've got visa issues preventing them from getting
- 40:40Speaker 1: into the country. And it's like, Liz, what that looks
- 40:45Speaker 1: to me like a systemic problem that we need to
- 40:49Speaker 1: think about if we're looking at a two year a
- 40:51Speaker 1: World Cup every two years, it's like, you know, where
- 40:53Speaker 1: we have countries like Australia and New Zealand where we
- 40:56Speaker 1: have these sophisticated albeit small organizations, but sophisticated and funded
- 41:02Speaker 1: organizations behind our national teams. It's possible, but like, are
- 41:06Speaker 1: the countries who aren't as well funded in their netball space?
- 41:09Speaker 1: Is it realistic for them? To have a World Cup
- 41:11Speaker 1: every two years.
- 41:12Speaker 3: There's something that probably needs to be taken into account.
- 41:14Speaker 3: I know World net Will have come out and said
- 41:16Speaker 3: that they would like to have a World Cup every
- 41:18Speaker 3: two years, and I understand their reasoning behind that, because
- 41:23Speaker 3: you want to make sure you're continually creating content right
- 41:26Speaker 3: for broadcasters and sponsors and that sort of thing. But
- 41:29Speaker 3: it probably does point to the fact that I don't
- 41:30Speaker 3: know the ins and outs of this particular situation. What
- 41:33Speaker 3: I have seen a couple of times pop up is
- 41:36Speaker 3: there's been visa issues for these two teams, and I
- 41:38Speaker 3: think they have been officially ruled out of the World
- 41:41Speaker 3: Youth Cup. So it does point to the fact that,
- 41:44Speaker 3: you know, getting teams to into a major tournament is
- 41:49Speaker 3: an expensive exercise, and there are a couple of countries
- 41:52Speaker 3: who can afford to do it, and there are a
- 41:54Speaker 3: number of countries who can't afford to do it. So
- 41:55Speaker 3: that's all the thing that needs to be taken into account.
- 41:57Speaker 3: But I'm gutted for those young players who've probably done
- 41:59Speaker 3: a heat the fundraising, oh yeah, to get themselves there
- 42:02Speaker 3: and to not be able to play that would be
- 42:04Speaker 3: really sad, and it's a blow for that tournament.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Well, what a great chat.
- 42:26Speaker 1: No one agrees with shiit chat for everyone else, But
- 42:29Speaker 1: I thought it was a great chat.
- 42:32Speaker 4: I mean what I do on the weekend?
- 42:34Speaker 5: Guys really quickly, Oh please cleandcast and made you talk
- 42:40Speaker 5: about netball?
- 42:41Speaker 3: Do you have anything else you wished to tell us?
- 42:43Speaker 5: When it is the last time you did something for
- 42:44Speaker 5: the very first time in the last six months.
- 42:48Speaker 1: No, it's interesting. It doesn't happen that often, does it.
- 42:51Speaker 1: It's great when it does happen. So what did you do?
- 42:54Speaker 1: Let's guess. Let's guess, Liz, let's guess she.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Can you give us a clue?
- 42:59Speaker 2: Dancing?
- 42:59Speaker 3: It's a sport? You a new sport?
- 43:03Speaker 1: Is it a team sport or an individual sport?
- 43:06Speaker 4: Sport?
- 43:06Speaker 3: Oh?
- 43:07Speaker 1: Pickleball?
- 43:09Speaker 4: It's something that I've never done in my life. I
- 43:11Speaker 4: didn't know the rules.
- 43:13Speaker 5: I was like a child turning up to people that
- 43:15Speaker 5: have played like thirty years.
- 43:17Speaker 4: It's played on an oval like a ground gruss cricket.
- 43:21Speaker 5: You played cricket, No, not cricket. I got roped into
- 43:25Speaker 5: it and I arrived at the venue and saw another
- 43:29Speaker 5: team playing, and I thought, oh no, I'm going to
- 43:31Speaker 5: run away because it was so scary, thinking I'm going
- 43:33Speaker 5: to do something.
- 43:34Speaker 4: I didn't know what I was doing. Did you play
- 43:38Speaker 4: with the bat?
- 43:39Speaker 2: You play with the bat?
- 43:40Speaker 3: Oh? I was gonna say, if you got roped into it?
- 43:42Speaker 3: Is that a clue? Like? Was it tuger war? But softball?
- 43:48Speaker 2: Nice?
- 43:49Speaker 5: It was crazy. I was like, you want me to bat?
- 43:54Speaker 5: I'm up for batting. I haven't even held a bat.
- 43:55Speaker 5: I don't even know.
- 43:56Speaker 4: I held it like a golf club with an interlinked finger.
- 44:05Speaker 3: This fry Well.
- 44:08Speaker 5: Just a friend that had said, look, just come and try.
- 44:11Speaker 5: And she's a lawyer and she's got this way. You
- 44:14Speaker 5: can't say no to her. And I was like, okay,
- 44:15Speaker 5: well I just come and try. And by the end
- 44:18Speaker 5: of it, I had the whole team saying, so you're
- 44:20Speaker 5: coming back next week, you're registering.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I was like, wow, really are you going on?
- 44:26Speaker 4: I don't know? And actually my husband is kind of
- 44:30Speaker 4: pushing me.
- 44:30Speaker 5: So I'm doing something else besides thinking about Netbull every
- 44:35Speaker 5: day and a bit different CrossFit.
- 44:39Speaker 2: That's what you need to do coming She's not crazy.
- 44:43Speaker 3: What do you think you'll be? Like, Well, you'll be
- 44:45Speaker 3: a picture or a batswoman or a fielder.
- 44:49Speaker 5: I feel like because I am the newbie. I'll just
- 44:52Speaker 5: do whatever I'm told. I don't know if I've I've
- 44:56Speaker 5: got any choice. They said go on the infield in
- 45:00Speaker 5: the middle and do the bases like no, No, the
- 45:02Speaker 5: outfield suits me perfectly, but I didn't realize that majority
- 45:07Speaker 5: of the hits go to where I was.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Yes, and how's your arm? Are you a good thrower?
- 45:12Speaker 5: I can throw, that's one thing I can do. Okay,
- 45:14Speaker 5: it's a little bit sore. I haven't done that for
- 45:16Speaker 5: a while, but it was so scary doing something for
- 45:20Speaker 5: the first time out of your comfort zone.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Did have to chew tobacco or is that the wrong sport?
- 45:27Speaker 4: No, that you probably do, but.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Just well, briany Akle, thank you so much for joining us.
- 45:37Speaker 1: I was so excited when Kat said that you were
- 45:39Speaker 1: available to step in for her. I haven't seen you
- 45:42Speaker 1: personally in about five years, and we've still only seen
- 45:44Speaker 1: each other virtually. But it's a real, real thrill for
- 45:48Speaker 1: Resort to have you here today and to honestly get
- 45:53Speaker 1: some mid court weight in this podcast, because go the middies.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Go Circle Ship. It's come on, it's too much.
- 46:00Speaker 4: Short statue of people.
- 46:01Speaker 1: I'm Caroline Swindell, I'm Brandy.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Ekle ug lose Ellis Bye.
- 46:06Speaker 1: This has been no dribvell Have a great week everyone Bye.
