- 0:15SPEAKER_00: All right, everybody.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Welcome back for another episode of BR at the movies podcast.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: I'm Barry.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And I'm Robin.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: So this week it was my choice of film.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: I have decided that it is time to finally scratch this one off the list.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: It has lived on the list for too long.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: If we are going to watch the 2013 film.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Wow, it's that old.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I remember when it was in the theater.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: We're gonna be watching the movie Her.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And I've never seen it.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Never seen it.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: So this film uh stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, uh, and then there's a couple other people, um Gabe Gomez, Chris Pratt.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Um so there's uh oh uh Bill Hayter.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so that that's it's definitely got uh a good a good uh big cast.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Oh Olivia Wilde, she's got a she's got a little bit in it.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Uh written and directed by Spike Jones.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: I did not know that.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So yeah, so it's um it it's one it's kind of it's a film that it when it came out it was relevant, and as the years have gone on, it has become more relevant.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, oh good.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, because I thought you were gonna just say the opposite.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Oh no, no, no.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: No, this is one where it's like if this was made today, you would be like, yeah, that sounds about right.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Um, so I don't, you know, I'm not gonna give away too much.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: I know you already know a little kind of you know, yeah.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: But it's um there we have so we were just talking about before where it's like sometimes we pick films and then there are some scenes in it that are sometimes hard to watch because I'm sitting here watching a film with my mother.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Um, this one there's a couple that are that are like that.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And so we'll we'll make it through those.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Um, but this one it it's really I think it's I think it's a really important film.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I think that it um it really kind of defines um where we're kind of headed as a society.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Um and like this was so the the movie when it it's set in the what you know the near future.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: So it's one of those where it's like it's in the future, but it's not like so far that it's like you know, crazy flying cars and whatnot and stuff where you look and it goes like, yeah, I could I could see us like almost we're almost there.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And like I said, as the years have gone by, we're closer to this than ever.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Ah, interesting.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And so yeah, so it's so it's really, really interesting.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, I'm I'm I'm really interested to see like what your take is on it.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I I mean I've obviously heard about it, and for some reason I just haven't pulled the trigger.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: I'm not a huge walking phil Phoenix is Oh, Walking Phoenix, yeah.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: I'm not a big fan.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Uh but I do know he is a very serious actor and he takes it very seriously, so it doesn't mess around.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: I figured that.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: He it it's kind of and I did see, you know, I've seen I've seen a joker or whatever.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And I did see the whole thing in that.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: He was he was very good, but yeah, he's very he he does kind of go very yes, it is like usually pretty intense.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Um where he kind of where he kind of pushes it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And a lot of times that's that's relevant for what character he's playing.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I think it's oh i it's too much.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Like he like it the character really didn't require that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: But he goes there.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But he goes there, yeah.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Um this one uh he does.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: I would say that he he does have like the more intense kind of like moments and stuff.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but he also has some lighter moments in this one.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of it has a has a little bit of a balance to it.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: I'm waiting for him to make a goofy comedy.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, just like that's ever gonna happen.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'd have to look.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he's ever done one, but I'd have to look at I don't think so.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You're like slapstick, like Adam Sandler style.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Total, yeah.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: It's like, what are we doing?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: This is I mean, it's like watching Christopher Walken do a you know, even to do a just a nice guy is just like jarring.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Right, right, right.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: So anyway, you're like, I kind of you know, Christopher Walken and him kind of got the same intensity to me.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: You yeah, I could see that a little bit, a little bit.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: They should make a spoo film where it's like they're just like they're intense, but it's like just over the top, like just like way wrong for whatever they're doing.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, it's like yeah, I don't know, they're like uh like elementary school bus drivers and they're like very intense, very focused on what they're doing.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't know, something something totally weird.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I wonder if they Christopher Walken probably go for it because he has done a little bit of variety, but I don't I mean, maybe Joaquin Phoenix isn't interested in stuff like that.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: I I gotta feel uh well, I mean, I always compare Joaquin to his brother, and you know, because we all miss River.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: And uh Mike, I think River would probably be more up for doing stuff like that than it would have been.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, even yeah, he he had a little bit of a range, even though he passed when he was so young.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he he was having a little bit of range, looked like he was having fun.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: I I don't see the fun in Joaquin.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so stick, maybe stick to the serious stuff.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: That's okay.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: You got you got the face for it.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: He's got the face.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: He's got the face for it.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: But all right, well, we are gonna go ahead and dive in and watch her, and then we will come back a little bit to talk about it.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: All right, we will be back in a little while.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: All right, everybody, welcome back.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: We just got done watching her, and since this was your first time watching, I'll let you go and take us away for this one.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Um, I I did like it.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: I guess I kept thinking this must have been blowing people's minds in 2013 when it came out.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: As they were probably going, what?
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: But now it's like, yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's we're not that far off.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: So I mean, was it well received?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, do you think?
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: It I mean, as far as like all the critics and stuff that I can I can see that I've seen online and stuff, I mean, it it has been like critically uh well received.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, let's see, for the IMDB rating is 8.0 out of 10.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's got a pretty high, yeah, pretty high IMDB score.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, I just I think you it's it the people that really uh appreciated it back, especially back then, had to be pretty open-minded.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's you know, because otherwise you're going, he's a freak.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: And this doesn't happen.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Well, and but I think like, you know, at the time it's like, okay, we're making this science fiction kind of film.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: And then it's like, I guess, yeah, and and it and it does pedic I I do how like like how they show it.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: It is it is obviously in the future a little bit.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: But um but not that but yeah, like you said, not crazy in the future.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: It's not like we're farming.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: No, and they're just moving around in the future, you know, kind of thing.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: But um, but yeah, it but no, I I I thought it was really good at the premise of it, you know, excellent that someone like thought to write this.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know?
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I mean Spike Jones did a great job with this.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, he wrote it, directed it, you know, so it's yeah, it's definitely definitely his.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: You know, that's what I thought too.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It's like as I as doing the rewatch, because obviously it's been a while since I've watched it, I was just like, you know what, I actually really do enjoy his performance one.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And I like because he he does get to show different sides of his his personality a little bit.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a little bit of a range, a little bit of lightness, but then darkness a little bit too.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: I liked it that um at the end, I I was really I I was thinking, he's not gonna kill himself now, is he?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: He's gonna jump off that building.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: So has that vibe.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: You know, it really does.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: And you're just like, all right, okay, it's like the his relationship is done.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: He wrote this like long letter to his ex-wife, yeah, of saying how he'll always love her and all this stuff.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: And it's just like one of those like, oh my, it's like, don't end the film that way, don't do it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: And so that's great.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: They didn't.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: They didn't, yeah, exactly.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and um, yeah, I th I thought it was really, really interestingly put together.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And strangely enough, so realistic.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Because it is just, I mean, if you want to just you know peel it down, it's just it's about relationships.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: That's exactly it.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter if you're you know in the same room or not, or you know, in the same space.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: And then I I was thinking like, okay, what would be the difference it's like if it was a long distance relationship?
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: And it's like this is the literally be the same thing, where it's like you're communicating on the phone, you're show you're exchanging videos and pictures, and you're in you know, doing FaceTime stuff.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: And it's like that's it's exactly what people do it all the time.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know, and sometimes it lasts and sometimes it doesn't, you know, it runs its course, whatever.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so yeah, it was very realistic, but I I just think it's so interesting to come up with this storyline.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Um and and you gotta think like because Joaquin Phoenix, he has to carry the entire film.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: He does.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: He he's in like 99.9% of the shots.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I think there's like maybe no, actually, the ones I'm thinking of, he's there, just it's on the other person.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: So but yeah, it's yeah, it's uh it's yeah, he's he's he is it.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it was uh a pretty big deal for him to take this on, I'm sure.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's because it's an emotional ride.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's all about emotions, all about feelings, and it's all about connections, the connection, right?
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: You know, and and how you connect and how you disconnect and maybe reconnect and yeah, and and or maybe just let go, you know, kind of thing.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, it's pretty it was it was it was really interesting.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: It really is, and it is very up to date, even though this is 13 years old.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: 13 years old and has become more relevant now than it probably was when it came out.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: It really, it's it's it's really it's really kind of cool.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm um I'm I am I'm really impressed with that.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Good, good.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: What I I really like the way that Spike Jones does this is that he does the memories, right?
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Like in the middle of conversation, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Like just and it's no no sound to him, just no context, all of a sudden just like these images are just popping in, and you don't really need the context, you can fill it in yourself.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: No, and it's not jarring.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: I've I think I've watched movies where it's a little jarring when they do that, yeah, yeah, and sometimes a little over-distracting.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but this this almost just kind of made sense.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: This is it's like you're in someone's head and this is what they're feeling, and this is what they're remembering, you know.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Because the emotions are tied to the experiences that they've had, and so when they're having these emotions of like, oh, you know, he's going through this stuff with his ex-wife, so obviously he's gonna be remembering everything that happened with his ex-wife, you know, the good and the bad and everything that kind of gives you the the full all-around picture of their relationship in these little snapshot moments.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And yeah, so and I I really think I really, really like the way that he did that.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: I thought it was done really well.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: I I do too.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and there was there was kind of a softness to it all um in the filming.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: So it was it was very it was very gentle, just kind of taking you along on this, you know, very gentle ride.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Right, exactly.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Um not but not uninteresting, it was very interesting.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: But I think even at the time when he's making this and he's gonna have people believe it, uh this is happening, these feelings are happening.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: And and I think he did a very nice job of just kind of leading people through it.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Not gonna not gonna force you, just gonna, you know, it's it's gonna be easy.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Come on, you can do this, you can come along on this, you can you can believe this.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, because it would be exactly the same kind of feelings and emotions you'd be having if it were two actors that were sharing the screen together.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Now it's two actors that are sharing dialogue together, right?
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Because it is Scarlett Johansson and more keen Phoenix, you know, that they're they're the two that are are sharing that, but you know, he's the only one that you get to see.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: But I feel but I feel like it would be it would be exactly the same, you know, because you could almost reshoot this entire film with an with her there, yeah, and nothing about the film changes.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: And it's like I really don't know.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: But then it wouldn't be as interesting.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: This way it means and it was kind of interesting, like how some people thought it was odd to have a girlfriend, you know, that was an AI.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Um, but um other people just totally accepted it.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: It's like, no, just bring her along.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: She's with us.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Right, you know, yeah.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: And it's just like yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And some pe some people were intrigued and some people thought it was yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Some people were almost repulsed by it.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like oh, like oh, you can't have a real Yeah, you can't connect with people anymore.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: So you gotta go to a computer.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then other people is like, no, this is a real person.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is this is something someone very real.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I just I thought that that part was kind of kind of interesting.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: I I liked the um the future I would I would call futuristic um look of this world um that he created.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Because like we've said before, like it's it's not that far off of where we're at now.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Um so like even stuff like his scanner thing, when he's like he's doing that, it's like there's no explanation for it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: There's no, you know, you you're just like, oh, that's just a part of the world.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: That's just what you do.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: This is the end of your workday and this is what you're doing.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I I do like that.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: And I I like how um he he is imagining it in whatever future.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: You know, everybody everything's kind of clean.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: And you know, that is very true.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: And um Yeah, because there's not like dirt, there's not graffiti and stuff everywhere.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: There's not it's not run down.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Poor poor Los Angeles got the smog and it never goes away.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: That's not too far off either.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, come on.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And they were even showing like, you know, like more uh, you know, e you know, electronic vehicles and stuff that they were they were using around, which you know, at the time, you know, it was yeah, we had some e-vehicles, but now we've got a ton.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, so it's like, yeah, we've kind of caught up to that that part of it a little bit more.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, it's it's it was really good.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: It really, it really was.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: And I don't know, maybe he had advisors of some sort to help him kind of imagine this new, you know, in the future, perhaps, like where things might be.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Well, and because I think we've I think cinematically we've kind of learned our lessons from like back to the future.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, poor back to the future.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like it breaks your heart.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like that, but when you look at it, it's like, oh, that's the 1980s in the future.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Cause it's so the eight, it's still the eighties, just in the futuristic setting.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: So it's like it kind of has that it has that disconnect of like, yeah, obviously we didn't go that with that route with everything.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Um, but this it's like, I feel like it it's generally like, you know, we could go there.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Um because I do like it.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: It's not because some people think in the future that we're not gonna do anything.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: It's like no, he's got a little key and he's getting his mail.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, there's there's you know, you're taking the elevator up, we're gonna, you know, right.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: It's um he's uh he's at his keyboard and he, you know, he's at his computer and he's talking to it right and it's doing the tasks, the tasks and stuff for him.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which we have the technology now, we can do that now.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: And it's like so it's like yeah, yeah, so it's just total reality.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: And and I I do like it because yeah, it's it's not I guess well, I'm not gonna compare this to Back to the Future, but Back to the Future was more it it their future was more like a cartoon.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: This is is feels real and grounded.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, and exactly and it's like yeah, we can do that.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, we can do that.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Um there is one thing that I have to point out.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, what are you pointing out?
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: That I didn't well c of course when I'm when you're watching the first time, yeah, you know, you're not pointing, you're not looking, you're not seeing all the all the little extra details and stuff because you're just watching it.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: This one I I noticed something and I thought it was odd at first, and then I was like, oh, let's see if that's a trend that continues.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Oh there's no belts.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: The entire film.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: There's no belts.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: There's no belts.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: There is no belts.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Nobody only a man would notice them.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Nobody, I I have every pair of pants or shorts, whatever I'm wearing, I wear a belt.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Every single one.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: So that's what a man would wear.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Well, because women don't.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Women don't always wear a belt.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: But you have the option to.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: We can, but it's more decorative.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, of course.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, it'd be more dedicated.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: So it's a man thing, but I I I see it.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: But it was like they're wearing their pants, but they were like almost like too high.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: And they were like, oh my god, and I was like, but if he had a belt, you wouldn't have to wear it so high.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: It's like now he wore that orange shirt an awful lot.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: It was, it was like his like go-to shirt.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: And I was just like, I mean, it was a good shirt.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: I liked it.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: But I was thinking it's like I'm thinking like my clothes of stuff like that.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: For I'm like, okay, like I got a I got a lot of shirts.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: I only rotate through about like seven or eight of them.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: You know, and it's like those are just the ones I wear.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And it's like so, and then that's that's you know part of his rotation and stuff.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: And then but it's true, yeah.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: But uh I'm sorry, I think only a man would notice the belt.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: No belts.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Well, so then there's the one thing I didn't I did notice the first time, but now I'm gonna bring it up now, is that so he's he's got his phone, right?
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Right, which has the camera in it, and that's how Samantha sees the world and everything.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: But his pocket is too big.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: So he's got a little safety pin there to hold it up.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's never brought up.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: No, it's never said, and it's like now, granted, I don't know if it was like cutting room stuff or it's like you know Yeah, but you and you never see him put it in there, but then you know, and then all of a sudden, oh yeah, yeah.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: His pocket is too long, so he wants to pop it up that way the camera part can be up higher so she can see.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: And it's like it's one of those little details of stuff.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah, so maybe in the future it's not gonna be all high-tech.
- 20:02unknown: Right.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: There might be some safety pins and no safety pins and nobody's around.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Safety pins and no belts.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Safety pins and no belts.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: It's streamlining things.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, we're just keeping it easy.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Just that's gonna be we're not going crazy with it, you know.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: We'll call that the title of the future: safety pins and no belts.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: But uh yeah, it's it's one of those, and like I said, it's like they could have shot it and then figure out like, okay, we don't really need this, and then we'll just move on, you know, something.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: But it's so funny where it's just like I did and it and it almost made me a little sad because he kind of hit this on the head with me.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: So when Joaquin's character is walking around, everybody else is talking to somebody else.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah, and it is like everybody's on their phone and not we're not looking at each other, we're not talking to each other, we're talking to s we're thinking and talking about something.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: There's and it's very little close to that.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Um, which uh it seems a little sad, but then it's like, well, but if it makes you happy, yeah, if it if it's soothing to you, whatever, right?
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, I should tell you I had one lady, uh an older lady, I would I just left work and I had my earbuds in.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: I was listening to the news or something.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, and she reamed me for not saying good afternoon to her.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Because in her day, that's what they did, and she was just on me about this.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: And I'm a grown person.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Hello, I'm I'm I wasn't that far from her age.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Maybe she had a little dementia.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know what's going on with this woman.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: But she was like getting on me.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: But I totally do that.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: I put in my earbuds, and I'm just I you know, I'm not really I'm I'm paying attention to what's around me.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Right, right, because I'm walking, but you know, I'm not.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: I'm not really you know I I acknowledge people though.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah you know I give them a little head bob or whatever, a little wave, whatever, you know.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: But oh no, she got all over me on that.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Uh because in her day, oh yeah, you know, she just got really angry about that.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: And it's like, you know, I hope you never do that to anybody.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: And what really later on, you know, how you have something happen and you want it, you don't have the good comeback.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Right, right, right.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I later on I thought about good comeback, and I said, you know, that's what because she was saying that's how she was taught.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: And I said, you know what my parents taught me?
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Manners.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: But anyway, but still.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: So still, you know, I was in my world, and you know, and and in this movie, it is a lot of he's seen people and they're talking to somebody, yeah, they're they're interacting with somebody, right?
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: But not each other.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: They're but not each other.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: So I I have a a story for a story for you of what happened to me today.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, today.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, today.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: So I so I had to go for an uh a medical medical appointment at the VA.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: So I go park my car, I go to the elevator, because you gotta take the elevator from the garage up to the main floor of the VA.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: So I go there, and of course, elevator doors open, and I didn't realize that it's still going down instead of going up.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: And then so I gotta ride it down another floor before I go back up.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: It's like whatever.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: So I go down, and then as soon as I get to the bottom, there's somebody getting on.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: So this guy, this guy gets on.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: So we ride it back up and go all the way up to the main floor.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: And so he gets out in front of me, and then I'm walking behind him, and we both walk over to inside the building through the doors, and past the reception, following right behind him, past the reception desk.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we both turn the same direction down the main corridor, wow, and we both go to the next set of elevators that we need to take.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: We both get on the same elevator, go up to the same floor, both get off at the same time.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Not a single word was spoken between us at all.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I would have started a conversation.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: We didn't there was we hadn't had no electronic devices or anything.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: He was he was quite a bit older than me.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, but still, we didn't have a word.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: There was not a word like spoken between us.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: You didn't say anything like wow, I guess we're going the same place.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: It's a man thing.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Men don't do that.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: So that's why women do that.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: I do that.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: I I ride the elevator and I talk.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: I don't call I don't always talk, but I know a lot of people don't talk.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: You know, whatever.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: But uh it's amazing when I have like just said a little bit to someone, because I mean my building is I'm only on the fifth floor, so I'm not gonna ride for very long.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: But you know, I'll I'll comment about something and they will they are happy to engage with me.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: I have I have seen that where it's like, yeah.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Well that's you know start talking to me next time, which you know, but I so I kind of like it.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: But anyway, it was good.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: He probably would have enjoyed it if he'd said something, especially if he's an older guy.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: It was kind of funny because it was I I thought about it like as we got as we got to the second elevator, and I was gonna say I was gonna say something, and then I was just like, nah, it's alright.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: And then I was just like, nope, we didn't say didn't say anything.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: So it was kind of it was kind of a lot but and thinking about that, that's what this is about.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: This is about communicating and right how do you communicate?
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: And it is is it okay if other people communicate differently?
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, totally.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: You know, totally and uh you know yeah, so it was that was the thing.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: I so mean this guy, it's like you know, we had a shared experience and didn't say a word to each other.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: And it's like there you go.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: And it's like so but uh I don't know.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: If I think if one of you were a woman something like that, something would have been said something.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there you go.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: I even did that when I was walking down the street because I I walk kind of slowly.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Um I'm very short and short legs, and people don't walk at my pace.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: But it happened to be one time there was this one lady, and we just happened to be walking at the same pace.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: And we were walking like for half a block and we're like right next to each other.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And I commented and I said, Wow, we're just like walking at the same pace.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: And it's like, yeah.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Um, so I mean you can't say sometimes.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: Sometimes.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, sometimes.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, you don't have to.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: And I don't always either.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: I'm not the I'm I'm not the one who constantly has to bring up a conversation, but I don't know.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: I can I tend to, but that is, I mean, that was a little you have you had a relationship with that old guy.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Uh something should have been said.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, and at the end we go, well, you have a good day.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, you too.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Sorry, you missed opportunities.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Missed opportunities.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, back to the movie.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Um so what did you think of Scarlett Johansson's performance?
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Because she was Oh, I think she did an excellent job.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: I think her I think I mean Joaquin's job on this film was difficult, of course.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: But I think hers was pretty difficult too.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: She had to do a lot just with her voice.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: And it's not just like an animated feature or something.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: There's nothing else.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: It's only her.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: And so no, I think she did an excellent job because I think I bet that was really quite challenging.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: I bet it was.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: But I mean, she could uh you know, you could she could express a lot of different emotions with her voice.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: And I thought I think she did really well.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: I I like um Chris Pratt's character.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, he's such a dude.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Such a goofy.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: And but see, the problem is that he was not that far removed from Parks and Wreck when he did this.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Uh and so it wasn't much of a stress.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: And then you think about it, it's like, what is it's like his character in this, he's he's a receptionist and he's you know, he's the goofy guy.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: And it's like, okay, so quite almost literally like your Parks and Wreck guy, you know.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: It's like okay.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: But no, no, he was an I I liked I and I do enjoy his performances.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: I I've liked him ever since he was young.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: And he was on Everwood, if you ever want to watch an old television show.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: Everwood.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: He was pretty young then.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: He did a good job.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: But no, I I do like I do like his acting style, and I do like he's just got this like little twinkle in his eye or something, and or in his something in his voice that just makes you kind of like I kind of like this guy.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: But he even though his roles are kind of always like um the guy at work, the kind of buddy kind of guy.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Well, but except Guardian of the Galaxy.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Well, Guardians it's it's a thousand.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: It's different, but still, but still he he can bring out his quirkiness.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: He's got a lot of quirkiness going on.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he does it well.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: And I but I think like he's the guy where it's like it's like, yeah, he's he's the buddy, he's the friend, you know, he's the he's the that's his that's his character.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: It's actually kind of interesting that three of the three main actors uh for this have all been superheroes.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: So there you go.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it says a lot about the superhero genre.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because that means there's too much too much of it.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Technically, Joaquin wasn't a hero.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: No, he's just a super villain.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: So it's like that was kind of interesting.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: But yeah, um, it's so the only thing is though so they have their they have their phones, right?
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: And the it's we kind of always go through this metamorphosis with cell phones.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Where they get big, they get really small, they get really big again.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: And so right now we're kind of going towards the big again.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: We are, and then um eventually they're gonna go back to the small.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: So this was when the so in this film the cell phones are predicted are showing they're probably like but I do like it, it's foldable.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but they fold, yes, exactly.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: And that and that was not popular then, and that was that I don't know if it still is a thing, but that's that is well, it is, yeah.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: Your sister has a foldable one, right?
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: Right, yes.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: It's not that small, but still I mean, just that foldable part, right?
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that so that stuff is very is is um is definitely very relevant.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I I think they did fine with that because uh they didn't know what uh we don't know what's well you yeah, you don't really know what the trends are gonna be.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: But I know it's gonna be uh I mean I think we can we can calm down on the big phones.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: I found it very interesting for this film is that you don't see Joaquin Phoenix drive a car ever in the entire film.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: He rides a train, he rides the public transportation, other than that he's walking.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: He is There you go.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: This is my people.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: I'm just thinking it's like, okay, this is supposed to be take place in LA.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: The car capital of the world.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Almost not quite, but almost.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, you're like you're gonna take Maybe, maybe, maybe that will be it.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Well they got so much smog that they have to stop.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: Just you gotta just stop, get out of that freaking car and do something else.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: That's my reason.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I thought I thought I think that's an that's an interesting touch.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: But it's but it's again, but it's not he doesn't get in any car, so it's not like he doesn't get in like a shared ride, he doesn't get in a cab, he doesn't get a you know, ride from a friend.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: You don't see a friend drive a car, you don't see any you do not see anybody drive a car in the entire film.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: I found that very, very interesting.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: I thought it was and well, and you know, it's like well, maybe they're thinking it might exist, but we're not gonna go there.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, and it's not necessary, right?
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: And you know, yeah, just get the bullet train and get the get the tra public transportation.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Let's just do it that way.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Well, but then again, it's one of those like if I would see a vehicle, then it's then you're gonna pull you right out.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because then you're like, okay, how are we how are they making this futuristic vehicle?
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: What are they doing to it?
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Is it like gold wing doors that go up and stuff like that?
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Because they did well with the computer screams.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: And I like this, I like the the the screen that they're just touching and stuff that's going on.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's um but yeah, no, they I guess they decided it would have been distracting.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's just like no, let's let's just not do it.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: Just not even go there.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: It was a very good choice.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: Good choice.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's pretty interesting.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no belt society though.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I can get behind a no-belt society.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: And live in a no-belt society.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: I would be the rebel, I would have a belt.
