- 0:04Speaker 1: All right, so here I am at the mall. I
- 0:06Speaker 1: told the guys, you know, we were going to have
- 0:08Speaker 1: our Suncoast reunion here. We'd meet up and talk about
- 0:11Speaker 1: the old store. What the hell is that horrible music? What? What?
- 0:18Speaker 2: What the hell is this? Hey, guys, hey, what the
- 0:22Speaker 2: fuck is this? Why are these jeans $ 90? These look
- 0:27Speaker 2: like regular jeans.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Ah, screw this. Let's just go to your house, Patrick.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Due to the fact that our previous employer, the mall-based
- 0:38Speaker 3: video store, was replaced by an overpriced clothing store, this
- 0:41Speaker 3: series of episodes is dedicated to the memory of the
- 0:44Speaker 3: fallen video store. Specifically the one in our cheesy mall
- 0:50Speaker 3: and all the weirdos that used to shop there. And
- 0:53Speaker 3: the fact that the store sort of dug its own
- 0:55Speaker 3: grave along the way. Anyway, rest in peace, Suncoast.
- 1:11Speaker 4: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 1:13Speaker 4: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 1:17Speaker 4: and parental discretion is advised.
- 1:20Speaker 5: It's showtime, folks.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Enjoy the show. Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million
- 1:39Speaker 4: kilowatts of power.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Are either one of these any good?
- 2:12Speaker 6: I don't watch movies.
- 2:18Speaker 5: I love the smell inside the Hollister.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Do you?
- 2:25Speaker 5: It's what teenage pheromones smell like.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I thought it smells like the inside of a $ 14 magazine.
- 2:32Speaker 1: magazines i can't afford anymore they all smell like the
- 2:35Speaker 1: inside of hollister and i can't hear you know.
- 2:39Speaker 6: I can honestly say i've never been inside hollister i
- 2:42Speaker 6: went in to look at it because i wanted to
- 2:43Speaker 6: see what because i mean that's the sad part is
- 2:45Speaker 6: i get in there and i still see it like
- 2:47Speaker 6: the layout of our i mean it's totally stripped and
- 2:50Speaker 6: new crap thrown up there and like stupid posters of shirtless.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Dudes, but it was, yeah, it was weird.
- 2:56Speaker 6: Spring break floor set. You remember where the microfiche is?
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I still tried to look stuff up there and
- 3:01Speaker 1: they were like, sir, get out from behind the counter. Like,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but I gotta look for this copy.
- 3:07Speaker 5: I gotta get a special order.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Would you like an Entertainment Weekly subscription? How can I
- 3:11Speaker 1: get nude yoga if I don't special order it?
- 3:13Speaker 6: Just a Dishnet station.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 1: See, I have to say, though, we made Netflix happen.
- 3:19Speaker 5: We did make it happen.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Think about that. We also probably put ourselves out of
- 3:22Speaker 1: business along the way. But, like, we are the reason
- 3:25Speaker 1: it all came together.
- 3:26Speaker 6: In retrospect, yeah, Netflix was a big deal. And we
- 3:30Speaker 6: were kind of the first people doing that.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I don't know anybody that was. I mean, you would
- 3:33Speaker 1: see the stupid things show up in magazines. They had
- 3:35Speaker 1: their little cards in those $ 14 magazines. But, like, I
- 3:38Speaker 1: don't ever remember anybody, like, talking about it except for us.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Right.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Or, like.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Five or six years like and then slowly like everybody
- 3:47Speaker 1: was like oh yeah i've got netflix but i remember
- 3:49Speaker 1: in the beginning like people didn't know what you were
- 3:50Speaker 1: talking about i hated the mail mail in movies what.
- 3:53Speaker 6: Are you an idiot it was gonna take weeks for
- 3:56Speaker 6: these movies you know you.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Have to go to a store and pay 39 for
- 4:00Speaker 5: a new release or you know across the street to
- 4:03Speaker 5: your house same parent company and get it for half
- 4:06Speaker 5: price but you know But they will leave their bastard
- 4:09Speaker 5: child soon.
- 4:11Speaker 1: But now you just have to pay $ 90 for a
- 4:13Speaker 1: pair of jeans. $ 90 a pair of jeans.
- 4:17Speaker 6: It's so dark in there.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I know, that's part of their marketing, I think.
- 4:22Speaker 6: I wouldn't mind taking a peek at what kind of
- 4:24Speaker 6: pants they have.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I can't see.
- 4:26Speaker 6: It's like a little, like I say, like a spring
- 4:28Speaker 6: break haunted house or something. It's very strange and spooky
- 4:32Speaker 6: in there.
- 4:32Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. And I think that's got to
- 4:35Speaker 1: be the marketing is like if we blind them so
- 4:38Speaker 1: they can't see the bad clothing and then we deafen
- 4:41Speaker 1: them with this horrible like disco track going on. Like
- 4:44Speaker 1: they'll be so, yeah, they'll be so like out of
- 4:47Speaker 1: the loop and they'll be so discombobulated. They'll just be like,
- 4:50Speaker 1: they'll stumble up to the register with a stack of
- 4:52Speaker 1: like $ 400 worth of clothes and And we'll just run
- 4:55Speaker 1: their card through. Like, I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
- 4:57Speaker 6: It's ironic that they want it so dark, considering, like,
- 5:02Speaker 6: their methods of hiring. That they want these very pretty,
- 5:07Speaker 6: very attractive, you know, employees, and then they put them
- 5:10Speaker 6: in the dark.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of mean.
- 5:13Speaker 6: The spotlight's on the clothes, and it's... You know, you
- 5:16Speaker 6: go out of your way to have, you know, very
- 5:18Speaker 6: attractive people, and then you have them hiding in dark corners.
- 5:21Speaker 5: You know what Suncoast didn't have? Very attractive people.
- 5:24Speaker 1: What are you talking about? This studly crew we've got here?
- 5:27Speaker 5: We were ugly, and the lights were on us.
- 5:29Speaker 6: We had our cliche walking sex employee.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Hey, hey, don't talk about yourself like that.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Come on.
- 5:36Speaker 7: No, no, no.
- 5:36Speaker 1: That's uncalled for. Or John, whatever.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Man, that boy brought the girls to the yard. That
- 5:43Speaker 6: is for sure. seriously like we needed like a wolf
- 5:48Speaker 6: ball bat or something it's like every couple hours you
- 5:51Speaker 6: would look at him and there would be two or
- 5:53Speaker 6: three girls that just would not leave him alone like
- 5:58Speaker 6: even if he went waited on a customer they would
- 5:59Speaker 6: just sit there and wait for him to come back.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Sweat for us to drink.
- 6:04Speaker 1: If only we could have sold that we'd still be
- 6:06Speaker 1: around no.
- 6:07Speaker 6: Doubt gotta take him reservations on his sweat.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Oh, wow. So we're midway into these stories. I guess
- 6:15Speaker 1: we should say hello. What's up? Welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I am Brian. And as you heard from the cheesy
- 6:23Speaker 1: intro there, we're doing something a little different this week.
- 6:27Speaker 1: We're having our, you know, our movie geek reunion.
- 6:32Speaker 5: I'll go with reunion.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Reunion we're going to go with. I'd say family reunion.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We're kind of family at this point.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Has it been 13 years?
- 6:40Speaker 1: You do the math. I don't want to, really.
- 6:42Speaker 6: I remember being there for 9-11. That's how I really
- 6:45Speaker 6: track it. I remember working that morning because everyone, since
- 6:48Speaker 6: we had TV, everyone in the mall came to our
- 6:52Speaker 6: place to have us turn on the news. So it
- 6:54Speaker 6: had to be 2000. That's a long damn time ago.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Let's not think about that part. So, yeah, to introduce
- 7:03Speaker 1: you guys, that would be David that was just talking there.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Hello.
- 7:08Speaker 1: If we want to do backstory, the store that we
- 7:14Speaker 1: worked at together wasn't the first time I met you
- 7:16Speaker 1: because you were at the other store I worked at. And, hell,
- 7:19Speaker 1: you were still like a teenager at that point. And
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'm like, this kid has the best Laserdisc collection I've
- 7:25Speaker 1: ever seen. You would come in and special order Laserdisc
- 7:29Speaker 1: to the point that I didn't know your name.
- 7:31Speaker 6: I'm that kid that spent $ 120 on that Akira special
- 7:36Speaker 6: edition from Japan and was giddy about it. You couldn't
- 7:39Speaker 6: convince 120 Akira on Laserdisc.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Only downhill since then until Leo remakes it.
- 7:47Speaker 1: You couldn't convince kids now.
- 7:51Speaker 6: I love Japan. I love your appropriate pronunciations, but I
- 7:56Speaker 6: can't wrap my head around that.
- 7:57Speaker 5: You grew up with Kaneda.
- 7:58Speaker 6: That's the way it should be. Yeah, I need Kaneda
- 8:00Speaker 6: just so I don't think of, oh, Canada, every time.
- 8:02Speaker 6: And he's even wearing red. That's what made it worse.
- 8:04Speaker 6: Instead of the pill on his back, I just imagined
- 8:06Speaker 6: the maple leaf. It's like, oh, come on, please. Can
- 8:10Speaker 6: we just fledge this one a little? Just say Kaneda, please.
- 8:15Speaker 2: No, no.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think you can convince kids now. Like,
- 8:19Speaker 1: think of it now. Like, they're lucky to spend money
- 8:21Speaker 1: on a Blu-ray, period. Like, when you can just watch
- 8:24Speaker 1: everything on Netflix or just download it from God knows where. So,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I'm like... It's called thepiratebay.com.
- 8:30Speaker 5: Thepiratebay.com.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Unless they send me money, I'm not plugging them at all. So,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I don't... Yeah, I don't think you can convince kids. Like,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I don't think they could wrap their head around the
- 8:40Speaker 1: fact that not only did you pay money for a movie.
- 8:42Speaker 6: I think we're still out. I think if Avatar The
- 8:45Speaker 6: Last Stairbender would get released, hey, I'm that kid. That
- 8:49Speaker 6: cartoon was good. It was, actually. If they would release
- 8:52Speaker 6: it on Blu-ray, I would drop $ 100. I would drop $ 100.
- 8:55Speaker 1: See, box sets I can see. Like, box sets, I mean,
- 8:58Speaker 1: people were still doing that all the way up through, like,
- 9:00Speaker 1: they were shelling out money for The Sopranos right and left.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So it's like, I can still see people doing box sets. But, like,
- 9:06Speaker 1: to think about one movie for well over $ 100, because
- 9:10Speaker 1: I can't. came pretty close.
- 9:13Speaker 6: I know I spent a good $ 79. 99 on one or
- 9:16Speaker 6: two at least, so I don't know.
- 9:18Speaker 1: If I got to the... Did he see Akira?
- 9:20Speaker 5: Is he, like, missing out on what Akira actually is?
- 9:23Speaker 5: I mean, we're talking Tokyo 3 here.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think you could convince people
- 9:27Speaker 1: the world that we once lived in. Only old people
- 9:30Speaker 1: listening now are just like, yeah, I remember those times.
- 9:33Speaker 6: Man, I'm not trying to tell us, but I think we...
- 9:36Speaker 6: I think we saw the future a little bit there.
- 9:39Speaker 6: I mean, I remember people making fun of it for
- 9:41Speaker 6: the size. I mean, because, come on.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Which one?
- 9:42Speaker 4: LaserDisc?
- 9:43Speaker 1: LaserDisc is a big DVD.
- 9:44Speaker 6: You know, it's the same thing. When that transition happens,
- 9:47Speaker 6: a digital format, man, I was all about it. I
- 9:50Speaker 6: was like, you don't understand. Like, this quality is not
- 9:52Speaker 6: going to decrease.
- 9:54Speaker 1: We can take a food break if you'd like. We've
- 9:58Speaker 1: gotten sidetracked on food.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Folks, it's intermission time. So how about taking a break?
- 10:03Speaker 4: Get out and stretch a little and relax before the
- 10:06Speaker 4: show begins again. And why not make it refreshment time, too?
- 10:11Speaker 4: We have lots of tasty, delicious treats waiting for you
- 10:14Speaker 4: at the refreshment center. There's hot popcorn, so golden good
- 10:18Speaker 4: and fresh out of the popper. And all kinds of
- 10:21Speaker 4: refreshing ice-cold soft drinks. Sizzling hot dogs just bursting with
- 10:25Speaker 4: juicy goodness. Ice cream so smooth and delicious, you'll hanker
- 10:30Speaker 4: for more. Plus, all the most popular candy bars and
- 10:34Speaker 4: many other favorite treats. So why not visit the refreshment
- 10:37Speaker 4: center now?
- 10:38Speaker 7: Neo Tokyo is about to explode. Streamline Pictures presents a
- 11:01Speaker 7: state-of-the-art adventure, Akira.
- 11:21Speaker 8: Dave, I do not get superheroes.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Oh my god, I don't get you. What don't you get?
- 11:26Speaker 9: Towerbot here. Well, the meatbags were going to say that
- 11:31Speaker 9: if you're a geek and like podcasts, then you could
- 11:33Speaker 9: try Tower of Technobabble at www.toweroftechnobabble.com. Then this started. Well,
- 11:42Speaker 9: it's up to you. I'm gonna get my taser and
- 11:45Speaker 9: put a stop to this. Towerbot out. Okay, monkeys, it's
- 11:51Speaker 9: nap time.
- 11:58Speaker 5: We've all got quirks.
- 11:59Speaker 10: I've got them.
- 11:59Speaker 1: You've got them, Dave.
- 12:00Speaker 5: That's what makes this character so, so compelling.
- 12:03Speaker 6: Thumbs up from me.
- 12:04Speaker 10: Same here.
- 12:09Speaker 9: This is Dean Cameron, also known as Chainsaw, and you're
- 12:12Speaker 9: listening to Moving Up Down.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Moving Up Down.
- 12:20Speaker 10: I'm Chainsaw.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I'm Dave.
- 12:22Speaker 5: We'll see you at the movies.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Scorpion and.
- 12:32Speaker 8: Selena, please.
- 12:32Speaker 7: Melina.
- 12:33Speaker 9: Sadly, I don't because my video game knowledge is lacking.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Which was my favorite part about selling games for years there.
- 12:52Speaker 6: I'm like, I don't play this shit.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, that's a great game. At least movies,
- 12:57Speaker 1: I can make shit up.
- 12:58Speaker 6: Games, I'm just like, I don't know, really. Man, I
- 13:01Speaker 6: was trained at GameStop. Trained to say it's the greatest
- 13:04Speaker 6: game on the planet. Straight up said to you, he's like,
- 13:07Speaker 6: if you've never played a game, it does not matter.
- 13:10Speaker 6: You go, this game is so good. I can't put
- 13:14Speaker 6: it down. Dude, when I get out of work.
- 13:16Speaker 1: See, that's how it's changed.
- 13:19Speaker 6: 2004 rugby, can't put it down.
- 13:20Speaker 1: That's how it's changed.
- 13:21Speaker 6: Cannot put it down, dude. Me and my bros, rugby
- 13:23Speaker 6: all night long. Oh, my God.
- 13:25Speaker 1: See, that's why, like, that's probably why I got out
- 13:28Speaker 1: of it, although I fucking probably ended up back there
- 13:30Speaker 1: before I know it. But I was just like, I
- 13:32Speaker 1: couldn't fucking deal with that, like, bullshit that you have
- 13:35Speaker 1: to do to be like, you've got to be Joe's salesman.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't make enough money to stand
- 13:39Speaker 1: here and bullshit people all day long. Like, I'm just
- 13:42Speaker 1: here to ring people up. That was my job. Register monkey,
- 13:45Speaker 1: you know? I'm like, that's really all we were there
- 13:47Speaker 1: to do. I'll put shit away, I'll ring people up,
- 13:49Speaker 1: but I'm not here to, like, sell.
- 13:51Speaker 6: They put so much weight on under associates. It's like,
- 13:55Speaker 6: you know, you have all these people that are in
- 13:56Speaker 6: control of what you carry and how much it's going
- 13:59Speaker 6: to cost, you know, and all the things that really matter.
- 14:02Speaker 6: Yet they put so much grind on the associates to
- 14:05Speaker 6: make it happen. It's like, dude, I'm the lowest on
- 14:07Speaker 6: the totem pole. I'm on the bottom. And you're grinding
- 14:10Speaker 6: on me to be the one that makes so much
- 14:13Speaker 6: money for you.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, that's what I was.
- 14:15Speaker 6: And like, even in the last days of Suncoast, that's
- 14:16Speaker 6: what killed me is I'm like, you guys are making
- 14:19Speaker 6: the worst decisions in the world up here.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And then you put all the responsibility on us.
- 14:24Speaker 6: Like.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Okay, we're going to buy on to six different companies
- 14:28Speaker 1: that we're going to be involved with. And then I
- 14:30Speaker 1: want you to pitch these six things to every motherfucker
- 14:33Speaker 1: in line.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Let's go do this real quick. Special orders. Reservations.
- 14:37Speaker 7: Come on.
- 14:38Speaker 1: We're back on track here.
- 14:39Speaker 6: Entertainment Weekly.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 14:41Speaker 6: Selling batteries.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Dish.
- 14:43Speaker 5: Batteries.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Oh, I forgot about the batteries.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Battery contest.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Had to sell a storage unit.
- 14:47Speaker 6: Had to sell a disc doctor.
- 14:49Speaker 5: A disc doctor.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Blank tape. Remember blank tape? We had, like, contests on
- 14:54Speaker 1: blank tape.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Oh, my gosh.
- 14:57Speaker 5: And I was dumb enough to buy one, and it
- 14:59Speaker 5: ruined my copy of Tomb Raider.
- 15:01Speaker 1: It doesn't do anything.
- 15:02Speaker 5: Not Mummy Raider. Tomb Raider. Mummy Raider, I wouldn't chance.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Of course.
- 15:07Speaker 6: I want to say that there was nine things. I
- 15:08Speaker 6: want to say, you know, because, again, having to fill
- 15:10Speaker 6: out that paperwork every night.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Dishnet, Netflix.
- 15:13Speaker 6: Special orders, reserves. Entertainment Weekly, Batteries, Storage, Dish, Netflix. We're
- 15:20Speaker 6: at seven. Did I miss anything? Probably. It was too much.
- 15:27Speaker 6: And considering that every single one had its own ratio,
- 15:30Speaker 6: everyone was like, You know, one in three sales, one
- 15:33Speaker 6: in seven sales, one in five sales.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And you're expected to push all of them.
- 15:36Speaker 6: Right. I'm like, by number two, the person is annoyed
- 15:40Speaker 6: and they're not going to come back anymore.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So you're just shooting yourself in the foot.
- 15:43Speaker 6: There was one time the DM was in the store.
- 15:46Speaker 6: And this was like end days kind of stuff when,
- 15:48Speaker 6: you know.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 6: We're getting grinded on.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I remember that.
- 15:52Speaker 6: And it was an amusing meeting with her in general.
- 15:55Speaker 6: But it got to where she essentially was like doing
- 15:58Speaker 6: a thing. She's like, okay, I'm going to sit back
- 15:59Speaker 6: and watch you do customer service.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 16:01Speaker 6: And so me being the ass I can be, I'm like, cool.
- 16:04Speaker 6: I'm going to give you textbook customer service right here.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Watch how this goes.
- 16:08Speaker 6: And so customer comes in. Hey, welcome to Suncoast. You know,
- 16:12Speaker 6: are you curious about Dish Network? You know, hey, if
- 16:15Speaker 6: you need anything, let me know. My name's David.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Especially if you need an Entertainment Weekly subscription.
- 16:19Speaker 6: So I let her do her thing. At some point,
- 16:21Speaker 6: I approach her, mention batteries. She's like, okay, thank you, cool.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Have a lot of vibrators at home, do we?
- 16:26Speaker 6: I approach her, you know, ask her if she's, you know,
- 16:28Speaker 6: finding things she needs. You know, I can special order
- 16:30Speaker 6: if not. She says, okay, cool. At some point, I
- 16:33Speaker 6: approach again. Hey, you know, we got storage units, too,
- 16:35Speaker 6: if you need that. Now she's starting to get a
- 16:37Speaker 6: little annoyed.
- 16:37Speaker 1: She's like, I'm good.
- 16:38Speaker 6: I'm cool. It is. So I back up a little.
- 16:40Speaker 6: At this point, I kind of take a halfway. I'm like,
- 16:43Speaker 6: she's already sick of me.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Yeah, she's getting pissed.
- 16:46Speaker 6: But you're doing your job. I'm like, okay, cool. Then
- 16:48Speaker 6: we'll finish this. Here comes the finale. She comes to
- 16:51Speaker 6: the register.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Finishing move.
- 16:53Speaker 6: She's got her one or two movies. And I'm like, hey.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Down, down, over, side, beat.
- 16:58Speaker 6: So what can I special order for you? What didn't
- 17:00Speaker 6: you find today that I can get for you? She's like, no,
- 17:02Speaker 6: I'm good. Cool, well, you know, we got some movies
- 17:04Speaker 6: coming out. We got the new season of Sopranos coming out.
- 17:06Speaker 6: You know, can I go ahead and reserve.
- 17:08Speaker 1: A copy for you?
- 17:08Speaker 5: And if the disc is scratched, you could have a
- 17:10Speaker 5: disc doctor.
- 17:10Speaker 6: This is all I need, these two movies.
- 17:13Speaker 11: Cool.
- 17:14Speaker 6: So have you heard of Entertainment Weekly? Because I can
- 17:16Speaker 6: get you three free months. Could you please just ring
- 17:19Speaker 6: me up?
- 17:20Speaker 1: Fucking ring me up.
- 17:22Speaker 6: So are you sure you don't need any batteries for
- 17:23Speaker 6: your remotes or anything? Because I mean, can you please
- 17:26Speaker 6: just ring me up? So did you understand how the
- 17:31Speaker 6: Ditch Network program works? Because I could talk you through
- 17:34Speaker 6: that if you didn't understand it. Ring me up. So
- 17:39Speaker 6: I have my manager and my DM standing right there
- 17:42Speaker 6: looking embarrassed as hell.
- 17:43Speaker 1: They should.
- 17:44Speaker 6: And she angrily finishes the transaction and walks out. And
- 17:48Speaker 6: I turn and look at her and I was like,
- 17:49Speaker 6: That was your textbook customer service. She is not coming back.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And I don't blame her. That's ridiculous. I wouldn't want
- 17:57Speaker 1: to come back to any place that did that to
- 17:59Speaker 1: me either.
- 18:00Speaker 6: I would go back all the time.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Yeah, but you're on crack. And possibly drunk right now.
- 18:06Speaker 5: And that's true.
- 18:09Speaker 1: So we didn't finish our little intro. But yeah, years later,
- 18:13Speaker 1: I remember after I veered away from Suncoast and unfortunately
- 18:18Speaker 1: came back, I walk in the other store and I'll
- 18:21Speaker 1: be damned if that weird kid that used to special
- 18:24Speaker 1: or laser this wouldn't stand behind the counter.
- 18:26Speaker 6: I was like, mother fuck, look, there he is. I
- 18:28Speaker 6: guess it's all come full circle because I had that
- 18:32Speaker 6: same response.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I remember that first time I saw they were opening
- 18:36Speaker 1: it up because the one in Jeff had already been
- 18:37Speaker 1: there and I was like, why isn't there one over here?
- 18:39Speaker 6: That sucks.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I worked across the street anyway and I go in
- 18:43Speaker 1: and it's like, coming soon.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Suncoast.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I was just like, the answer to all my problems,
- 18:48Speaker 1: which by the way, it wasn't. But I was just like,
- 18:51Speaker 1: that's it. And then they were dragging their feet. I
- 18:55Speaker 1: was going to be there. There's no doubt about it.
- 18:58Speaker 1: I'm going to be there. That guy that was running
- 19:01Speaker 1: the store, I'm like, dude, what the hell is your problem?
- 19:04Speaker 1: So I bugged the hell out of that manager, which,
- 19:06Speaker 1: by the way, was our other guest uncle. And that's
- 19:10Speaker 1: how you got involved. Howard was the initial manager there.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I pestered the hell out of him until he was like, look,
- 19:17Speaker 1: I'm going to give this guy a job so he'll
- 19:18Speaker 1: quit calling me and asking about it because he won't
- 19:20Speaker 1: leave me the fuck alone. So he was probably sick
- 19:23Speaker 1: of me quite a bit at that point, but he
- 19:25Speaker 1: put up with me for years. He has a lot
- 19:27Speaker 1: of love to give. He does, actually. Howard's pretty awesome.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And then, I don't know, 70 years later, whenever it was,
- 19:34Speaker 1: you came wandering in. And actually, didn't he bring you
- 19:37Speaker 1: in one day and was like, hey, look, it's Patrick.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Give him a job. And we were like... Do we
- 19:42Speaker 1: have to? Look at this motherfucker.
- 19:43Speaker 5: I didn't really understand what they were doing.
- 19:45Speaker 1: You were like, what's a movie? And the next thing
- 19:47Speaker 1: you know, you're working there. I'm just like, motherfucker. So,
- 19:53Speaker 1: so yeah, that's how we've all come together in this
- 19:56Speaker 1: little group. It's, I mean, and they're all sectioned off
- 19:58Speaker 1: because if you've been listening to the show, we've done these,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I mean, Greg's been on the show most of the
- 20:03Speaker 1: run of it. He was there with me at Clarksville.
- 20:06Speaker 1: He's been there with me, you know, for years. uh
- 20:09Speaker 1: ben that we've had as a guest from tower technobabble
- 20:12Speaker 1: worked with me at that same store the other dave
- 20:15Speaker 1: not this dave uh we can do it like spice
- 20:18Speaker 1: girl style dave c not dave l dave c was
- 20:23Speaker 1: uh was one that was there when howard was there
- 20:26Speaker 1: so he was there and opened the store with him
- 20:27Speaker 1: and he's been he's been on many a time and
- 20:30Speaker 1: and we'll be back if i have my way but Yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 1: so there's little pockets of employees that work together.
- 20:36Speaker 6: And technically, we were like the last run. We were
- 20:38Speaker 6: there when that store closed.
- 20:40Speaker 5: We were the one who hid the DVDs in the
- 20:42Speaker 5: walls and ran them out the day before.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I don't know anything about that. If the company was
- 20:47Speaker 1: still around, they'd be pissed. I paid for it all,
- 20:51Speaker 1: thank you very much.
- 20:51Speaker 5: I paid for most of it.
- 20:52Speaker 1: There was a discount involved but you know i was
- 20:55Speaker 1: entitled to my discount i'd worked there for years it.
- 20:57Speaker 6: Was petty though wasn't it wasn't it like 20 or
- 20:59Speaker 6: something oh i.
- 21:00Speaker 5: Think we're talking about they hide them in the walls
- 21:02Speaker 5: until it's 90 because that's the discount that's.
- 21:05Speaker 1: The discount i was that's how i got.
- 21:07Speaker 5: My evil dead action figure set.
- 21:08Speaker 6: Nice what was the weird promo that would happen it
- 21:12Speaker 6: was like a refurbish thing that would happen every now
- 21:15Speaker 6: and then where we'd get all these dvds in that
- 21:17Speaker 6: i think were essentially like returns.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I think that was towards the end too.
- 21:21Speaker 6: That they would be like yeah you know these are
- 21:23Speaker 6: actually okay because i remember like getting a chunk of
- 21:26Speaker 6: akira kurosawa criterion stuff.
- 21:28Speaker 5: Yeah but dirt cheap cheap.
- 21:30Speaker 12: Like you know we didn't used to get that i
- 21:32Speaker 12: think that was something yeah i think that was a
- 21:34Speaker 12: weird deal they started making at the end there because
- 21:36Speaker 12: yeah actually now that i think about it i have
- 21:38Speaker 12: a criterion brazil but it's like missing the first disc
- 21:44Speaker 12: It's missing the regular movie.
- 21:46Speaker 1: But you get, like, the two that you pay, like,
- 21:48Speaker 1: $ 100 for, like the special edition and the other cut
- 21:51Speaker 1: and the, like, all the, yeah. So I was just like, well,
- 21:54Speaker 1: you can just buy, yeah, you can buy a regular
- 21:56Speaker 1: version of the movie for, like, $ 15, and then I've
- 21:59Speaker 1: got this Criterion extras for, like, $ 7. 99 or whatever it was.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I was just like, yeah, I think I'll do that.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I don't even love Brazil, but I'm like, for that,
- 22:06Speaker 1: I'll take the Criterion version.
- 22:08Speaker 6: Shit.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Well, before we totally, I mean, if we're going to
- 22:11Speaker 1: get knee-deep into our... Our days back at the coast,
- 22:15Speaker 1: if you will. Let's do it official-like.
- 22:19Speaker 5: There's a props department. I feel like the value.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Of this is... Alright, here we go.
- 22:25Speaker 5: Shit just got so real. Shit just got so real.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Fuck yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 1: We're set now.
- 22:31Speaker 6: Shit.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Wow.
- 22:34Speaker 6: I have my.
- 22:35Speaker 1: West Coast vest on.
- 22:36Speaker 5: I think it's been dry cleaned.
- 22:37Speaker 1: You guys are jealous?
- 22:39Speaker 10: I know.
- 22:40Speaker 5: It looks pressed.
- 22:40Speaker 6: He's very proud of it.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I've dusted off the four inches of dust that was
- 22:44Speaker 1: on top of it before I brought it here.
- 22:45Speaker 5: You know the Nazis had pieces of flair they made
- 22:47Speaker 5: the Jews wear.
- 22:48Speaker 6: You know, you turn that inside out and it works
- 22:50Speaker 6: out for your Han Solo outfit.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I already have a Han Solo.
- 22:53Speaker 6: But I went with the Empire version. The Empire outfit's better,
- 22:58Speaker 6: if you ask me.
- 22:58Speaker 2: It is.
- 22:59Speaker 5: But far worse.
- 23:00Speaker 1: It's the brown pants.
- 23:02Speaker 6: Blue jacket.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Nice.
- 23:04Speaker 8: Sadly, I do.
- 23:05Speaker 1: The carbonite outfit.
- 23:06Speaker 8: I do have carbonite.
- 23:06Speaker 6: That looks like his Snuggie. It was Han Solo's Snuggie.
- 23:10Speaker 6: It's kind of cold around here. I'm going to bring
- 23:12Speaker 6: my Snuggie.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Can you guys encase me in carbonite? It's a little
- 23:16Speaker 1: chilly in here.
- 23:17Speaker 6: I mean, it is coming up in the air.
- 23:18Speaker 1: It's chilly.
- 23:18Speaker 6: It's windy. I'm going to bring a Snuggie.
- 23:20Speaker 5: 1,000 years frozen in carbonite.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Okay, so we've got the vest on. It's professional now.
- 23:29Speaker 1: So we're ready to roll. Do we want to... Dart,
- 23:33Speaker 1: I feel like, I mean, we've done this segment before.
- 23:35Speaker 1: It has been a while, but I guess it's time
- 23:38Speaker 1: for the Movie Fan Freak Show. Greetings, carnival robes, step
- 23:46Speaker 1: right up and meet the freaks. This segment I specifically
- 23:51Speaker 1: started because I, like from day one, I don't think
- 23:56Speaker 1: I'd ever experienced people quite like I did when I
- 23:59Speaker 1: worked there. I mean, there's a lot of weirdos in
- 24:02Speaker 1: the world, don't get me wrong, but there's a very
- 24:05Speaker 1: specific breed that is drawn to movies in particular. Maybe
- 24:09Speaker 1: just all forms of media. I don't know if there's
- 24:12Speaker 1: different ones that come in the music stores. Maybe that
- 24:15Speaker 1: has its own little version.
- 24:18Speaker 6: Honestly, I've done food, I've done video games, I've done music,
- 24:22Speaker 6: and I've done movies, and they all have a very
- 24:25Speaker 6: weird niche percent of these customers that are just... Bizarre. Like,
- 24:31Speaker 6: just surreal. Like, the kind of stuff you might see in, like,
- 24:35Speaker 6: you know, some silly comedy. You know, someone being, like,
- 24:38Speaker 6: over the top. And you're just like, those people don't
- 24:39Speaker 6: really exist.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Or kind of lynchy and Sometimes you're like, these people
- 24:45Speaker 1: are so damn quirky.
- 24:47Speaker 6: The Klingons were legit.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:49Speaker 6: Oh, the Klingon sisters. The Klingons.
- 24:51Speaker 1: So, yeah, I figure we're going to roll into these characters.
- 24:55Speaker 5: I think we should make some type of a top
- 24:56Speaker 5: ten countdown. All right.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Do you have them ranked or do you want to generalize?
- 25:01Speaker 5: I kind of think we should probably go generalized, but
- 25:03Speaker 5: I have a ranking system in my mind.
- 25:05Speaker 6: We have to go over all of them first and
- 25:07Speaker 6: then decide the ranking.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I don't even know if I can name ten.
- 25:10Speaker 5: I'm going to pitch out number ten.
- 25:11Speaker 6: We're going to have to remind each other. I'm going
- 25:12Speaker 6: to pitch out number ten.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 25:14Speaker 5: He started well before my time, back in the days
- 25:18Speaker 5: of the Howard. But I do remember a special, special
- 25:21Speaker 5: occasion with him. He was more than a man. In fact,
- 25:25Speaker 5: he was a mountain man.
- 25:27Speaker 1: See, I've told the beginning version of this a long
- 25:31Speaker 1: time ago. Actually, we have mountain man artwork. I had
- 25:35Speaker 1: it commissioned by our... Semi-resident artist.
- 25:39Speaker 5: That's the sound of shit just getting real.
- 25:42Speaker 1: I don't know if I have it on here. I
- 25:43Speaker 1: know I have it. I have a version of The
- 25:47Speaker 1: Mountain Man.
- 25:47Speaker 5: I only have one story of Mountain Man.
- 25:49Speaker 1: All right. I've told my version, but yeah, I wanted
- 25:52Speaker 1: to bring other people in.
- 25:53Speaker 5: It might be the same story.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And it was like many, many years ago. So half
- 25:57Speaker 1: those people are probably moved on and don't listen to
- 25:59Speaker 1: us anymore. So go to town.
- 26:00Speaker 5: I grew up basically hearing Legends of the Mountain Man,
- 26:03Speaker 5: not unlike the Legends of Sasquatch, how he would every
- 26:06Speaker 5: once in a while on Tuesday come down from the
- 26:08Speaker 5: mountain to buy his new releases. That somehow he got
- 26:12Speaker 5: government funding for because he would come in with an
- 26:14Speaker 5: entertainment check.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Yeah, why don't I get this, by the way?
- 26:17Speaker 5: I need an entertainment check. I feel like it can
- 26:18Speaker 5: go much further with us than it would with him anyways.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Oh, shit.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I have it on here. One day. Hold on. You're
- 26:24Speaker 1: not going to want to wait. You're going to want
- 26:26Speaker 1: to see it right now. I want to see it. Luckily,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I've got the old system here, and I happen to
- 26:31Speaker 1: have brought it. So let me load it up here,
- 26:34Speaker 1: and I'll turn it around for you. Shit is about
- 26:37Speaker 1: to get real.
- 26:39Speaker 6: I'm not sure if I had this guy. I remember
- 26:42Speaker 6: a big, burly, hairy guy, but I don't know if we're.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Talking about the same guy.
- 26:45Speaker 3: He was skinny, though.
- 26:46Speaker 1: He was like super skinny.
- 26:47Speaker 5: He was a little emaciated. Lots of hair, lots of jackets.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And the Russian fur cap that was going on.
- 26:55Speaker 5: The cap was the money. Okay.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Here is the mountain man.
- 27:00Speaker 5: I love that this was commissioned. That is so accurate.
- 27:06Speaker 1: He even got the axe.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, he had his own hatchet that he attached
- 27:10Speaker 1: to it.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Oh, that is so accurate.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 27:15Speaker 6: Wow.
- 27:18Speaker 5: So I only had one interaction with said mountain man,
- 27:21Speaker 5: and it's when he came in to the store on
- 27:23Speaker 5: a Tuesday to get his new release, probably of Lara
- 27:26Speaker 5: Croft Tomb Raider.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Who wouldn't?
- 27:28Speaker 5: The Cradle of Life.
- 27:30Speaker 3: She is.
- 27:31Speaker 5: And I don't know if anybody else remembers, but Our
- 27:33Speaker 5: movies were $ 19. 99 and sales tax made that $ 21. 19. Right.
- 27:37Speaker 1: That's a bargain.
- 27:38Speaker 5: And he always paid in cash.
- 27:41Speaker 1: As you do in the mountains.
- 27:42Speaker 5: He handed up $ 21. 15.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Or furs.
- 27:44Speaker 5: $ 21.
- 27:44Speaker 6: 15.
- 27:45Speaker 5: And he searched his pocket. He knew he was off
- 27:48Speaker 5: a little bit. And he became really kind of like
- 27:51Speaker 5: emotionally disheveled at the fact that he wasn't going to
- 27:54Speaker 5: have exact change. And, you know, I was young. I
- 27:57Speaker 5: was like, you know, if you have a buck, it's
- 27:59Speaker 5: fine and I can give you change. Or, you know,
- 28:01Speaker 5: it's four cents and I'm 15.
- 28:03Speaker 6: I don't give a shit.
- 28:06Speaker 1: That still holds true.
- 28:07Speaker 10: By the way.
- 28:08Speaker 5: And it's like, I know you're coming next Tuesday. You
- 28:10Speaker 5: can bring it then if you feel inclined. And he
- 28:13Speaker 5: told me to wait and he reached into his shirt,
- 28:16Speaker 5: which was unbuttoned a little bit, and... pulled out a
- 28:19Speaker 5: necklace that at first I thought was an amulet, but
- 28:21Speaker 5: it was some kind of Canadian currency with a hole
- 28:24Speaker 5: punched in it and then the leather strap that he
- 28:26Speaker 5: then ripped off and proceeded to pay with.
- 28:29Speaker 6: He gave you his necklace?
- 28:31Speaker 5: He gave the necklace, which I'm still not sure how
- 28:34Speaker 5: to use that. There wasn't one of the little, you know,
- 28:36Speaker 5: predestined little coin slots for it, like quarters Canadian Rocky
- 28:40Speaker 5: Mountain fur coin. But I'd like to start with Mountain Man.
- 28:46Speaker 1: That seems like a good place to start.
- 28:48Speaker 5: A true hero, if you will.
- 28:50Speaker 6: I don't think I had this guy.
- 28:52Speaker 1: He was early on, so that's why, yeah. Like I said, I.
- 28:54Speaker 6: Was there for the Deanna days.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Like, I don't know if.
- 28:58Speaker 6: Was Meltman still around?
- 28:59Speaker 1: I don't think so. I think he was gone by...
- 29:01Speaker 1: That's why I don't know if... You may just be
- 29:03Speaker 1: retelling this legend. I may just be retelling it. Because
- 29:05Speaker 1: I thought that was a Dave C story.
- 29:07Speaker 5: It might be a Dave C story. This is how
- 29:10Speaker 5: Suncoast works.
- 29:11Speaker 1: It kind of is.
- 29:12Speaker 6: It's built on bullshit.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And there's a mythology to it. You have to understand the.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Did he use his hatchet to open his new DVDs?
- 29:21Speaker 5: No, he bought that thing with the little razor blade
- 29:24Speaker 5: in it, that little DVD.
- 29:25Speaker 1: It's the one that we were supposed to add on
- 29:27Speaker 1: to our pitch.
- 29:28Speaker 7: Oh, wow.
- 29:29Speaker 6: He had a box cutter out of a piece of
- 29:32Speaker 6: slate and some driftwood and some vines, and it was
- 29:36Speaker 6: for opening his new releases.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Now, he did have this. it was a dual action
- 29:41Speaker 1: it was a hatchet that i'm sure he's killed many
- 29:44Speaker 1: things people whatever with but in the in the handle
- 29:47Speaker 1: of it it was also a pipe yeah that was
- 29:49Speaker 1: pretty badass He was allowed in the mall with those? See,
- 29:52Speaker 1: that's what I'm saying. This was a long time ago.
- 29:55Speaker 1: This was well pre-9-11.
- 29:57Speaker 6: This was when St.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Matthew's was the wild, wild west.
- 29:59Speaker 1: It kind of was.
- 30:03Speaker 5: This is when I would be able to jump in
- 30:05Speaker 5: that fountain down at the food court with no repercussions.
- 30:08Speaker 1: And you did.
- 30:08Speaker 6: I ripped off his necklace to pay for the rest
- 30:11Speaker 6: of his DVD.
- 30:13Speaker 5: I think that that's the sign of a man, actually.
- 30:16Speaker 6: It's just something like, I feel like, Like he's going
- 30:19Speaker 6: to come back for it later or something. Almost like
- 30:21Speaker 6: it was like, you hold this.
- 30:22Speaker 5: You hold this.
- 30:23Speaker 1: This is like his collateral. In 30 years, I will
- 30:27Speaker 1: be back.
- 30:27Speaker 6: It was like Indiana Jones giving you the hat and
- 30:29Speaker 6: be like, I'm going to be back for this. I'm
- 30:31Speaker 6: going to be good on his four cents. You hold
- 30:33Speaker 6: onto this hat. You know I'm coming back for this.
- 30:35Speaker 5: That garage door is going to be closing one day
- 30:37Speaker 5: and bam, there I am.
- 30:38Speaker 1: He'll be back for his necklace.
- 30:40Speaker 6: And before the break.
- 30:41Speaker 5: I just think that maybe this is something that Angelina
- 30:44Speaker 5: Jolie should hear in know that somebody cared about her
- 30:46Speaker 5: Cradle of Life film so much, they pay with their
- 30:49Speaker 5: own jewelry.
- 30:50Speaker 6: Or at least the last ten minutes.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Who's the next one, Brian?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Again, I had lost track of quite a few. I
- 30:58Speaker 1: don't know which ones you want to save as the
- 30:59Speaker 1: big grand finale here.
- 31:01Speaker 6: I want to kind of go, since you're talking about
- 31:03Speaker 6: specific change, do you guys remember The Argentinian? Go on.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Don't know that I do. I think we found our
- 31:11Speaker 1: next one.
- 31:12Speaker 6: I called her Dargentine. I want to say we all
- 31:13Speaker 6: called her Dargentine. The little Hispanic old lady.
- 31:17Speaker 4: Yes.
- 31:18Speaker 6: The little Hispanic old lady that we're pretty sure was
- 31:20Speaker 6: somehow bootlegging for her, like, parole son. I think I
- 31:24Speaker 6: do remember this. Gangster son.
- 31:27Speaker 1: I do remember.
- 31:27Speaker 6: She would come in every new release day.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Tuesday.
- 31:31Speaker 6: It could be summer and she'd have some massive puffer
- 31:34Speaker 6: jacket on trying to make her not look so emaciated.
- 31:37Speaker 6: And would pull out some list of movies on some
- 31:41Speaker 6: scraggly piece of paper that her son probably filled out
- 31:44Speaker 6: for her.
- 31:45Speaker 5: And swaddled out of his anus.
- 31:47Speaker 6: There's some reason she was not into these movies. It
- 31:51Speaker 6: was clear these were not for her. And would make you...
- 31:54Speaker 6: She would get every new release.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I really like some of those. Playmate of the Apes
- 32:00Speaker 1: is classy.
- 32:04Speaker 5: And.
- 32:05Speaker 6: You had to ring each one up individually, which killed us.
- 32:11Speaker 10: Nice.
- 32:11Speaker 6: Killed us because of all those things we had to
- 32:14Speaker 6: sell and all those beverages.
- 32:16Speaker 1: And it broke it down as to how many items per.
- 32:20Speaker 6: I mean, there was always like a breakdown of like
- 32:22Speaker 6: units per sale was supposed to be.
- 32:24Speaker 5: But I had the Argentinian.
- 32:25Speaker 1: And like, yeah, you needed like a handicap or something.
- 32:28Speaker 1: You'd be like, it's not my fault.
- 32:29Speaker 6: She'd pull that baggie out full of change. Full of change.
- 32:34Speaker 6: And would just reiterate over and over and over, I
- 32:37Speaker 6: need you to ring this up separately, please, with every
- 32:40Speaker 6: single one. As you're doing it, I need this one separately, please.
- 32:44Speaker 6: And would pay with the change out his baggie, exact
- 32:47Speaker 6: change for every single one. And needed the receipt for
- 32:49Speaker 6: every single one. And every time would act like you
- 32:51Speaker 6: scammed her somewhere. Would just evaluate that receipt. Oh, no,
- 32:55Speaker 6: I can't, I can't. I do remember this, because I
- 32:59Speaker 6: do remember her pouring over the receipt, and it's like,
- 33:01Speaker 6: it's got one thing on it.
- 33:02Speaker 1: How long do you have to look at it?
- 33:03Speaker 6: And it paid with exact change.
- 33:06Speaker 1: How did we scam you?
- 33:07Speaker 6: And most of the time, sometimes she would, depending on
- 33:11Speaker 6: how heavy that new release day was, sometimes it would
- 33:13Speaker 6: be like five, six, seven movies. But she had to
- 33:16Speaker 6: be on the bus.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 33:17Speaker 6: She had a bus schedule, and she would freak out
- 33:21Speaker 6: if you weren't ringing her up fast enough. I remember
- 33:24Speaker 6: I forced her one time, like it was towards the end.
- 33:26Speaker 6: I think I'd already put in my notice. I made
- 33:29Speaker 6: her pay for all them on one ticket. And I
- 33:31Speaker 6: think she almost had an anxiety attack. Like I explained
- 33:35Speaker 6: to her that I could, that the receipt is itemized,
- 33:38Speaker 6: you know, whoever it is that might be concerned with
- 33:40Speaker 6: these totals, you can see it all right there. Like
- 33:42Speaker 6: I just essentially refused. I just kept scanning them. ignoring
- 33:45Speaker 6: her and i swear she got the twitches.
- 33:48Speaker 1: What a panic attack was kicking in i.
- 33:50Speaker 6: Think someone someone back at home might have might have
- 33:52Speaker 6: hit on her a little bit for letting that.
- 33:55Speaker 1: That's wonderful to hear yeah i do remember it is
- 34:01Speaker 1: one of those things i think it must have been
- 34:03Speaker 1: right at that timing because i think you did always
- 34:06Speaker 1: get scheduled on that new release day because you i
- 34:09Speaker 1: mean yeah we always kind of in you know depending
- 34:11Speaker 1: on your position you would end up at that same
- 34:13Speaker 1: schedule every week and I think that's what it was.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I think you got stuck with her every damn time.
- 34:17Speaker 6: Poor baby.
- 34:19Speaker 5: So that brings us to the end of our second customer,
- 34:21Speaker 5: which I think is an opportune time to do what
- 34:24Speaker 5: I'd like to call a little employee spotlight. Let's play
- 34:28Speaker 5: a little Russian roulette with this. Would you all like
- 34:30Speaker 5: to go seasonal hire or long-time employee?
- 34:33Speaker 6: Let's say long-time employee because long time is going to be.
- 34:37Speaker 5: Really good.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:38Speaker 5: Really good.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I'm letting you guys go with these. I've tried to
- 34:41Speaker 1: block out most of the ones that aren't here.
- 34:43Speaker 5: Seasonal employee, which I mentioned earlier. I had something I
- 34:47Speaker 5: wanted to say, and I just can't wait. I'm going
- 34:49Speaker 5: to start this one off. It's a two for one,
- 34:53Speaker 5: but I'm only going to highlight one of them. We,
- 34:55Speaker 5: at one point, hired two men, and they were obviously...
- 35:01Speaker 5: present for the destruction of sodom and gomorrah one of
- 35:05Speaker 5: them was a little bit taller a little bit thicker
- 35:07Speaker 5: and one of them was a little bit littler a
- 35:09Speaker 5: little bit skinnier and i'm gonna i'm gonna highlight our
- 35:13Speaker 5: little cub for us i don't know if you remember
- 35:16Speaker 5: him he had a shaved head with two little antenna
- 35:19Speaker 5: sticking out and his stage name was.
- 35:25Speaker 6: Does this bring i believe so he was the very
- 35:28Speaker 6: final run wasn't he i do remember him because wasn't
- 35:32Speaker 6: this also the one that was kind of a little
- 35:34Speaker 6: bit g a little g little g which.
- 35:37Speaker 1: You didn't i was like that's the first time i
- 35:39Speaker 1: think i'd seen a gg yeah i was like i've
- 35:42Speaker 1: never seen somebody work together the g like rap persona
- 35:47Speaker 1: with very openly kind of obviously gay i was just
- 35:51Speaker 1: like this is An odd combination. I've seen a lot
- 35:55Speaker 1: of different variations on this before, but never quite his.
- 35:58Speaker 6: MC Juxtaposed.
- 36:00Speaker 5: He was amazing, and it was from his other friend,
- 36:03Speaker 5: who we later found out that they hated each other,
- 36:05Speaker 5: because they were, of course, ex-lovers.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Which happens.
- 36:09Speaker 5: That our little friend had a blossoming pornography career.
- 36:13Speaker 1: I do remember hearing that.
- 36:14Speaker 5: Oh, and it gets so much better, because we sold,
- 36:17Speaker 5: or no, we didn't. He showed it to me on
- 36:18Speaker 5: the internet, the DVD version, And it was a fairly
- 36:22Speaker 5: intense gangbang in which men would line up next to
- 36:26Speaker 5: a pool single file and ravage him and his little body.
- 36:30Speaker 5: And the highlight being that he would say things such as, oh,
- 36:33Speaker 5: I won't get bleeped while I know. He would say
- 36:35Speaker 5: things such as, hey, daddy, fuck me in my fart hole.
- 36:39Speaker 5: Which was absolutely amazing.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Hot.
- 36:44Speaker 5: So we're going to bury that little pearl. I'm going
- 36:48Speaker 5: to fast forward a few years. At this time, I'm
- 36:49Speaker 5: 15 years old when I meet.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Judy.
- 36:53Speaker 5: And now I'm 28. I live in Louisville, and I
- 36:57Speaker 5: opened a, we'll just say, alternative medical clinic, which takes
- 37:02Speaker 5: me to meet all types of interesting people and interesting situations.
- 37:05Speaker 4: I'm sure.
- 37:06Speaker 5: One of them being an alternative healing festival that I attended.
- 37:11Speaker 5: I would say that I got absolutely no clientele from it,
- 37:13Speaker 5: but what I did find out was that our stay
- 37:16Speaker 5: classy little friend is now a psychic medium.
- 37:20Speaker 1: That, I guess, doesn't surprise me.
- 37:22Speaker 5: Different haircut. Lots more clothes that are professional.
- 37:25Speaker 6: Wouldn't antennas help, though?
- 37:27Speaker 1: No, yeah. Exactly.
- 37:30Speaker 5: But yeah, he came up to me and I was like,
- 37:32Speaker 5: fuck me and my fart hole. Where did he come from?
- 37:37Speaker 5: And that has been a Suncoast Employee Spotlight. On to
- 37:40Speaker 5: number eight.
- 37:42Speaker 6: Wow. There's still so many. I feel like we're all
- 37:48Speaker 6: just kind of like playing poker a little. We're all
- 37:51Speaker 6: kind of sitting on our cards like, which card?
- 37:53Speaker 1: Big Mama.
- 37:54Speaker 6: Oh, I remember Big Mama. Yeah, that was one of
- 37:57Speaker 6: those ones.
- 37:58Speaker 5: I got a picture of Big Mama paying with her
- 38:00Speaker 5: cleavage money.
- 38:00Speaker 11: Nice.
- 38:00Speaker 6: I was going to say, man, I took many dollar
- 38:04Speaker 6: bills soaked with boob sweat. Many dollars. Man, she just...
- 38:09Speaker 6: reach in there and pull out anything and change oh
- 38:14Speaker 6: no doubt i think like lefty had changed righty had
- 38:17Speaker 6: the bills like i'm pretty sure one of them jingled
- 38:20Speaker 6: a little We have the photos here.
- 38:24Speaker 5: I was so blatant with the flash and everything.
- 38:26Speaker 1: See, let's, okay, yeah, we have to clue you guys in,
- 38:29Speaker 1: because for many years at the Old Sun Coast, these
- 38:32Speaker 1: just were a legend, and we would just, we would
- 38:34Speaker 1: pass these on. And things like the Mountain Man, I
- 38:36Speaker 1: had to commission a version so that we would have
- 38:39Speaker 1: a visual. Like, I had to go and, like, I
- 38:42Speaker 1: gave her a description. I'm like, no, really, here's... this
- 38:45Speaker 1: i named i wrote down this like detailed description of
- 38:48Speaker 1: everything she had to get in there he's got to
- 38:51Speaker 1: be wearing this giant fur hat and so yeah i
- 38:54Speaker 1: did i described all that and that that's how we
- 38:56Speaker 1: got that awesome artwork which i guess we'll have to
- 38:57Speaker 1: post on the facebook page now so you better be
- 39:00Speaker 1: our friend on facebook but um yeah then a generation
- 39:04Speaker 1: or two later in the in the run of employees
- 39:07Speaker 1: a certain mr patrick comes along who decided to take
- 39:11Speaker 1: it up a notch if you will and um He
- 39:14Speaker 1: invested in a little camera. I believe they were digital
- 39:17Speaker 1: at that point, right? It was the first era of digital.
- 39:19Speaker 5: Sony CyberShot 3.2 megapixel.
- 39:21Speaker 1: See, I got one of those later. I got one
- 39:24Speaker 1: of those. And um decided to just blatantly start taking
- 39:27Speaker 1: photos of people.
- 39:28Speaker 5: Not ask them not ask them not turn the flash
- 39:31Speaker 5: on i think during.
- 39:32Speaker 6: That end game last year or two like we we
- 39:36Speaker 6: kind of knew the end was coming and we're like
- 39:38Speaker 6: man wait we need proof of this from when we
- 39:40Speaker 6: go we we need to be able to document this
- 39:43Speaker 6: we need you know have images for these stories because
- 39:45Speaker 6: people aren't going to believe you you can tell these
- 39:47Speaker 6: stories all you want there's some things people they need
- 39:50Speaker 6: to see it to.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Believe it they kind of do number seven any votes
- 39:56Speaker 1: do we want to yeah did we cover big mama
- 39:58Speaker 1: you really we got sidetracked on the photo but just
- 40:00Speaker 1: the money pain was the bulk of her yeah.
- 40:02Speaker 6: I think super nice you know super sweet kind of
- 40:05Speaker 6: like great mcdonald's employee outfit She was McDonald's. Because we
- 40:09Speaker 6: had that McDonald's right.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Across the street there.
- 40:11Speaker 6: We'll save.
- 40:12Speaker 1: We'll save. That's towards the top of the list. That's
- 40:14Speaker 1: number two or one. That's two or one.
- 40:15Speaker 6: I know that we're saving him. I've got three, two,
- 40:17Speaker 6: one in my mind.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Okay, so I've got one that's a low-rent version.
- 40:21Speaker 6: He needs to be at the bottom of the list
- 40:23Speaker 6: because he was not that big a deal.
- 40:25Speaker 1: He really wasn't even like a big story, more or less.
- 40:28Speaker 1: He just... He's one of those guys you would run to...
- 40:31Speaker 1: He doesn't even need to be a movie store kind
- 40:34Speaker 1: of geek. He's just one of these people that would
- 40:36Speaker 1: turn up at any... job you ever worked this kind
- 40:40Speaker 1: of guy would be there i'll spin around the photos
- 40:43Speaker 1: and let you guys uh exactly coffee.
- 40:46Speaker 6: Guy oh my god yeah coffee guy that motherfucker.
- 40:50Speaker 5: But you know i didn't like him i didn't like
- 40:53Speaker 5: him either one day oh god one day one day
- 40:56Speaker 5: he comes in and he's like hey if you could
- 40:59Speaker 5: uh if you could buy a home entertainment system what
- 41:02Speaker 5: would you buy And I was young, so I was
- 41:05Speaker 5: always on the internet, pricing stuff on BestBuy.com. And I
- 41:09Speaker 5: was like, man, they've got this sweet, sweet Bose system
- 41:13Speaker 5: over there. They have a 65-inch not flat panel TV.
- 41:18Speaker 1: They made flat panel?
- 41:20Speaker 5: No, not yet.
- 41:20Speaker 1: I know. I was looking into the future.
- 41:23Speaker 5: Beautiful. And it's only like $ 7, 000 back then for all
- 41:27Speaker 5: of this stuff. And he's like, oh, okay, I'll be back.
- 41:30Speaker 1: I do remember this.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Comes back with the... receipt and he's like hey little
- 41:35Speaker 5: jealous fat kid what the fuck check out this receipt
- 41:40Speaker 5: I got why don't you pick out some movies that
- 41:42Speaker 5: you would like to watch and I'll buy those too
- 41:45Speaker 5: and I'll really make you feel like a true piece of.
- 41:47Speaker 6: Shit if it makes you feel better I pushed him
- 41:50Speaker 6: on super bit I pushed him on super bit I
- 41:56Speaker 6: told him it was the future I told him, because
- 41:58Speaker 6: didn't Lucas have something to do with that?
- 42:00Speaker 1: Probably. We should take a little break here and explain
- 42:03Speaker 1: to the kids what Superbit is, because no one knows.
- 42:06Speaker 5: LaserDisc and DVD.
- 42:07Speaker 1: It failed, man. Which version was it?
- 42:10Speaker 5: It was the 8-track of DVD.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Because it wasn't, like... They'd already gone with DVD.
- 42:15Speaker 5: It was DVD.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Because there was already, like, the DVD DivX War. So
- 42:20Speaker 1: that happened. DivX... DVD won. Well, they got.
- 42:23Speaker 5: They got the idea in them that DVD is going
- 42:25Speaker 5: to be revolutionary because we'll have special features on there.
- 42:28Speaker 5: But then they realized that special features took up room
- 42:31Speaker 5: on the disc. And so why don't we pump up
- 42:33Speaker 5: the audio and video four more megabytes and sell it
- 42:38Speaker 5: for $ 12 more?
- 42:39Speaker 1: Because didn't those come with no special features? No special features. Yeah,
- 42:42Speaker 1: the Superbit was.
- 42:43Speaker 6: More expensive, had no special features. It had the best
- 42:47Speaker 6: possible picture.
- 42:49Speaker 1: In theory. But again, I was always at home watching
- 42:51Speaker 1: it on my crappy, like, 48-year-old TV. Like, I wouldn't
- 42:54Speaker 1: have known the difference if it was Superbit or not.
- 42:57Speaker 5: I will make an argument.
- 42:58Speaker 6: Most TVs still hooked up by RF.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Mine might be right now.
- 43:04Speaker 5: I own every version of Luc Besson's Fifth Element.
- 43:08Speaker 1: As well you should.
- 43:09Speaker 5: And Superbit is actually my favorite, even compared to Blu-ray.
- 43:13Speaker 5: I like the Superbit version more.
- 43:15Speaker 6: So yeah, that guy's got some Superbit movies.
- 43:18Speaker 1: He's got every one of those.
- 43:19Speaker 6: Awesome entertainment system. Because, yeah, man, he came in, it
- 43:22Speaker 6: got to the point where he would come in and
- 43:24Speaker 6: be like, did you get any new movies on Superbit?
- 43:26Speaker 6: I know that's the best quality out there.
- 43:28Speaker 1: And I'm like, uh, thank God. Sure.
- 43:31Speaker 5: I got my coffee.
- 43:32Speaker 6: What can I, yeah, he would always come in toting
- 43:34Speaker 6: his coffee.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Just waiting for my movies.
- 43:36Speaker 6: Just killing you with his breath.
- 43:37Speaker 1: This was the era before everywhere in the world had
- 43:40Speaker 1: coffee shops, or at least certainly in our part of
- 43:42Speaker 1: the country, I'm sure.
- 43:43Speaker 6: Green Tree Mall still doesn't.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm like, that mall had gotten one, and
- 43:48Speaker 1: it's funny that that's where it crept in almost first. Like,
- 43:51Speaker 1: there was one or two little places in the trendy
- 43:53Speaker 1: little areas here that had them. But it was, yeah,
- 43:56Speaker 1: it was pre-Starbucks, and it was the mall-based places were
- 44:00Speaker 1: the first ones in probably most of the country that
- 44:03Speaker 1: started getting coffee shops. So he would hit our coffee
- 44:07Speaker 1: shop every time and then come in toting his cup
- 44:09Speaker 1: of coffee and have stupid things to say to you.
- 44:12Speaker 5: I hope this douchebag's out there listening.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Congratulations if you are. Because you know what?
- 44:16Speaker 5: Before I got poor and went to grad school, I
- 44:20Speaker 5: had a home theater too, asshole. I had a 100-inch
- 44:23Speaker 5: projection screen. How do you like that? 9.1 Dolby Digital
- 44:28Speaker 5: DTS2 sound system.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Booyah!
- 44:30Speaker 5: Yamaha 9VX system. You know what that is? That's 920...
- 44:35Speaker 5: Little bits of electricity running through that bitch make it loud.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Now, overall, how'd that work out for you?
- 44:40Speaker 6: Yeah, just a little.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Just so I don't feel so bad about myself.
- 44:44Speaker 5: It worked out pretty poorly, and now my best friend
- 44:46Speaker 5: owns it, and I don't get to go over and
- 44:47Speaker 5: watch it anymore.
- 44:48Speaker 1: What a bastard.
- 44:49Speaker 5: He does do 8-bit Nintendo on it, though. That's pretty sweet.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Nice.
- 44:52Speaker 6: Good stuff.
- 44:53Speaker 1: So, okay, do you remember.
- 44:55Speaker 6: Because the only reason I kind of remembered him as, like,
- 44:58Speaker 6: a specific story was the.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Do you remember the Practical Magic story? Because I thought
- 45:04Speaker 1: it was you. Like, I remembered it from hearing it.
- 45:06Speaker 5: Are we talking Sandra Bullock practical magic?
- 45:08Speaker 1: No, no, Nicole Kidman.
- 45:10Speaker 5: Sorry, Nicole Kidman.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Is Sandra Bullock in there, too? I know it was
- 45:13Speaker 1: Nicole Kidman, yeah. Okay. Do you remember?
- 45:16Speaker 6: See, I'm trying to remember. I remember the details now,
- 45:18Speaker 6: but basically. Did he think this was the bound version
- 45:20Speaker 6: of this movie?
- 45:22Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, I'd watch that.
- 45:24Speaker 6: It was one of those things he would always come in,
- 45:26Speaker 6: and he had, like, a weird thing of, like, he
- 45:29Speaker 6: would be obsessed with the music. In movies, which I
- 45:32Speaker 6: can't say anything about since I just started a spinoff
- 45:34Speaker 6: show about that. But he would come in and he'd
- 45:38Speaker 6: be like, he would go into specific songs. And he
- 45:42Speaker 6: came in, I'm pretty sure you were behind the counter, Dave.
- 45:45Speaker 6: And he'd be like, have you seen Practical Magic?
- 45:48Speaker 1: And he was selling you on why you should watch
- 45:51Speaker 1: Practical Magic. And then he started talking about the song.
- 45:54Speaker 1: And at some point, they played the Lime and the
- 45:56Speaker 1: Coconut song. And, like, he starts, like, singing it to
- 45:59Speaker 1: you or something, and you're like, oh, like the one
- 46:01Speaker 1: in Reservoir Dogs? Not a clue. Not a clue.
- 46:04Speaker 5: Real music or real movie, not a clue.
- 46:07Speaker 1: I don't know. Is any of this triggering? I just remember, like,
- 46:11Speaker 1: you were like Reservoir Dogs, you know. Most people, you know,
- 46:15Speaker 1: movie geeks would reference it from that.
- 46:16Speaker 5: You've got to be careful bringing up memories like this.
- 46:19Speaker 5: You'll put him into a depression. He's depressed a lot
- 46:22Speaker 5: of this.
- 46:24Speaker 1: I don't blame him.
- 46:25Speaker 6: It's funny because, you know, he started telling that story, and, like,
- 46:28Speaker 6: Part of me is like, this sounds familiar, and it's
- 46:31Speaker 6: just interesting hearing you tell it, like, with the response
- 46:34Speaker 6: that I would have done. It's like, as soon as
- 46:35Speaker 6: you said lime and coconut, it's like, oh, I would
- 46:37Speaker 6: have said reservoir dogs, I'm sure. Like, that would have been,
- 46:40Speaker 6: maybe that really did happen, or maybe you're just, you know,
- 46:43Speaker 6: kind of know where I would have went with that.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Tapped into your brain.
- 46:46Speaker 6: I do remember being annoyed with him. He was one
- 46:51Speaker 6: of those kind of people, one, wouldn't let you finish.
- 46:55Speaker 6: You know, you would start telling them something when talk over, oh,
- 46:57Speaker 6: I know, I know, you know, this, this, this. Like, dude,
- 46:59Speaker 6: I was only halfway into that sentence. I didn't even
- 47:01Speaker 6: actually get to the point yet. You don't know.
- 47:04Speaker 1: You don't know a damn thing.
- 47:06Speaker 6: But was very, you know, all about, like, what's the best?
- 47:09Speaker 1: What's the best?
- 47:09Speaker 6: Which is why I was all like, oh, super bit,
- 47:11Speaker 6: super bit, super bit. You got to get super bit.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Kind of special reason. Would you like some batteries? Oh,
- 47:16Speaker 1: my gosh.
- 47:18Speaker 6: Best dish network ever. You can tell he was compensating
- 47:21Speaker 6: for something. Like, everything had to be the best.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Well, and in actuality, like when I think about it,
- 47:27Speaker 1: then and now in particular, I'm just like, dude was
- 47:30Speaker 1: probably just old and lonely. Like, again, he's wandering the
- 47:33Speaker 1: mall in the middle of the day, in the middle
- 47:35Speaker 1: of the week. You know, it's like he obviously had
- 47:38Speaker 1: nothing else going on. Like, he always was by himself.
- 47:41Speaker 1: You know, I'm just like... I guess.
- 47:44Speaker 6: That was how he killed time.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Maybe he had some sort of settlement and never had
- 47:47Speaker 1: to work again and had money to burn. That was
- 47:50Speaker 1: his whole life.
- 47:51Speaker 5: The alarm doesn't go off.
- 47:51Speaker 6: Because he didn't look old enough to be retired.
- 47:53Speaker 1: No. He was maybe mid-50s. But he didn't look like
- 47:57Speaker 1: he was retired.
- 47:57Speaker 5: He was probably the inventor of disc doctor.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Let's go see if they're pushing my shit.
- 48:03Speaker 5: It's got to be the best. Because if you get
- 48:05Speaker 5: a scratch on that disc.
- 48:07Speaker 1: This will scratch it up more. Diss Doctor.
- 48:10Speaker 5: Don't go in reverse. Don't go in reverse.
- 48:12Speaker 1: This show is not brought to you by Diss Doctor.
- 48:14Speaker 6: Do you remember having to listen to that? Remember it
- 48:15Speaker 6: had its own little station with the TV and it
- 48:18Speaker 6: had the video that played looping and you had to.
- 48:19Speaker 5: Listen to it. We should do this show again with
- 48:21Speaker 5: hypnosis to see how we really feel.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure we've laid it out there. So yeah,
- 48:26Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 48:27Speaker 6: It was one of those like, but that stupid practical
- 48:29Speaker 6: magic story stuck with me because it is one of
- 48:31Speaker 6: those I would see the after effects because every time
- 48:34Speaker 6: after that he would come in and I think he
- 48:36Speaker 6: would do it to you and then he started doing
- 48:38Speaker 6: it to me.
- 48:39Speaker 1: He would go in and it would be like cold,
- 48:40Speaker 1: like he'd never done this before. And he would be like,
- 48:43Speaker 1: Have you seen Practical Magic? Like he would start overselling
- 48:46Speaker 1: you that again. And I'm just like, dude, you told
- 48:49Speaker 1: me this like a week and a half ago. What
- 48:51Speaker 1: are you doing? But it would like never click. Like
- 48:54Speaker 1: I was a new person. I'm like, there's only like
- 48:56Speaker 1: three of us that are here during the day. You
- 48:58Speaker 1: know it was me. And Dave started too. So shut up.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Like it's just one of those he would loop back
- 49:04Speaker 1: in every time and he would start that same little pitch.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Like I needed to go see Practical Magic. I'm okay.
- 49:10Speaker 6: He prepped his script in the morning before he went
- 49:13Speaker 6: into the mall. And if he loses his place, he
- 49:15Speaker 6: has to start over at the beginning.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Maybe he owns stock in whatever company made Practical Magic.
- 49:22Speaker 1: That's how he made his money. He was out pushing
- 49:24Speaker 1: it on everybody he ran into.
- 49:26Speaker 5: So now I have a question.
- 49:28Speaker 8: All right.
- 49:28Speaker 5: About policy and what became of Suncoast. Maybe we could
- 49:33Speaker 5: call this product spotlight. Because I remember that before there
- 49:38Speaker 5: was a Hot Topic... Suncoast is where you got all
- 49:42Speaker 5: of your Nightmare Before Christmas swag.
- 49:45Speaker 8: Yes, yes.
- 49:46Speaker 6: And I think.
- 49:47Speaker 1: I have some that I bought.
- 49:48Speaker 5: I think Hot Topic owes us a thank you. Because
- 49:51Speaker 5: we kind of invented their entire store.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Kind of. Yeah. I mean, that's the thing. Before I
- 49:57Speaker 1: was even working there, I would always go in. Because, again,
- 50:00Speaker 1: usually I'd be too broke to buy movies. But if
- 50:02Speaker 1: I had to pick, I knew that the movies would
- 50:05Speaker 1: be there. As long as they were in print, that
- 50:07Speaker 1: stuff was always there. But the dorky t-shirts... Which obviously
- 50:11Speaker 1: leads to my recent side project of cataloging all my
- 50:16Speaker 1: old dorky shirts. You have a problem. Yeah, I do
- 50:18Speaker 1: have a problem.
- 50:19Speaker 6: That's a problem.
- 50:19Speaker 1: But the t-shirts and posters and stuff like that, we
- 50:22Speaker 1: would get them in that first run and that was it.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Like you would only get, especially like new movies and
- 50:27Speaker 1: stuff like that, you would get one run... You'd be
- 50:29Speaker 1: lucky if you ever saw him again.
- 50:30Speaker 5: You want your die-cast bust of Morpheus from Matrix reloaded.
- 50:33Speaker 1: You better get it.
- 50:35Speaker 5: You get it that time or it's never there again.
- 50:36Speaker 1: You better get it when it shows up.
- 50:38Speaker 6: The time when, well, what ended up being one of
- 50:40Speaker 6: the now dozen special editions for Army of Darkness and
- 50:44Speaker 6: Evil Dead, but, like, that first time that... The phone
- 50:48Speaker 6: book version of that. And I just remember thinking, oh
- 50:51Speaker 6: my gosh, this is going to be the greatest version
- 50:53Speaker 6: of this movie ever. And then cut to five other
- 50:55Speaker 6: versions since then.
- 50:57Speaker 8: Take your pick.
- 50:57Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, I remember just eyeballing that thing.
- 51:00Speaker 5: Yeah, that thing was legit.
- 51:01Speaker 1: But for me, that was kind of the difference for
- 51:04Speaker 1: that store.
- 51:05Speaker 6: It's like you could go to any lame blockbuster and
- 51:08Speaker 6: get movies, but that.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Was the only place. And again, being the geek that
- 51:13Speaker 1: I was, the stuff was... was like way more, you know,
- 51:16Speaker 1: it was hard to come by because there was no
- 51:18Speaker 1: internet back then. You couldn't just randomly order, you know,
- 51:21Speaker 1: whatever shirt you wanted with whatever movie image you wanted.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Like you had to come across it physically or you
- 51:27Speaker 1: didn't have it, you know? So it's like.
- 51:28Speaker 5: It's icing on the proverbial cupcake.
- 51:31Speaker 1: So I don't know. The fact that like that store
- 51:35Speaker 1: actually got in product with, you know, dorky movie stuff
- 51:39Speaker 1: slapped on it was like a huge deal for me.
- 51:41Speaker 1: So it's funny that now.
- 51:43Speaker 6: Not only can you get anything you want on the internet,
- 51:45Speaker 6: but there are mall-based stores, specifically Hot Topic, that just
- 51:49Speaker 6: like that became kind of their thing.
- 51:51Speaker 5: I think somebody was high and inside our store, which
- 51:54Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, this would be a fucking great idea.
- 51:55Speaker 5: You could sell fishnets to 13-year-old girls.
- 51:59Speaker 1: That is awesome. What are you talking about?
- 52:00Speaker 5: That is a great business plan. Why didn't we think
- 52:02Speaker 5: of that? You know who probably owns it?
- 52:03Speaker 6: I have no idea about Hot Topic.
- 52:05Speaker 5: Employee Spotlight.
- 52:06Speaker 6: You do know that I've worked at Hot Topic for
- 52:08Speaker 6: eight years.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Oh, I know.
- 52:09Speaker 1: I believe in you. That's kind of why I was,
- 52:11Speaker 1: that's kind of why I was.
- 52:12Speaker 6: I didn't know if he knew though. I was like,
- 52:14Speaker 6: you know, I literally just left that job two weeks ago.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:17Speaker 6: I was there for eight years.
- 52:18Speaker 5: Which one did you work at?
- 52:19Speaker 6: I worked at the green tree store for like five,
- 52:22Speaker 6: six years and the St. Matthews for two and then
- 52:25Speaker 6: back at the green tree for one or two. I
- 52:27Speaker 6: probably do.
- 52:27Speaker 5: I know.
- 52:28Speaker 1: No, I know.
- 52:30Speaker 5: She has a little rock band, always dresses like Betty Page.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Isn't that every girl at Hot Topic?
- 52:37Speaker 6: No, I was going to say, when you're kind of
- 52:39Speaker 6: talking about what made Suncoast niche, and what I kind
- 52:43Speaker 6: of alluded to earlier, the whole reason I got hired
- 52:45Speaker 6: at Green Tree is because I knew about anime.
- 52:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:48Speaker 6: And you cut back to 98, 99. This is when
- 52:50Speaker 6: Adult Swim was just starting.
- 52:52Speaker 5: That was information that they needed.
- 52:54Speaker 6: Just starting.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:55Speaker 6: And Dragon Ball Z in particular. And they did not
- 52:58Speaker 6: have a certain... Anyone on staff that could even tell
- 53:02Speaker 6: you the names of characters from Dragon Ball Z.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Yeah, because I was one of those people. I'm like,
- 53:05Speaker 1: I still don't know that much about it.
- 53:06Speaker 6: He literally was like... I feel bad for not remembering
- 53:09Speaker 6: my manager's name, but he literally was like, you are
- 53:12Speaker 6: our anime specialist. Yeah. Like, we need you.
- 53:15Speaker 8: And.
- 53:16Speaker 6: That was a mixed blessing, because those kids are tough
- 53:19Speaker 6: to deal with. But, yeah, I mean, that was the
- 53:23Speaker 6: only place that had anime.
- 53:25Speaker 10: Period.
- 53:25Speaker 1: It really was.
- 53:26Speaker 6: Anywhere.
- 53:27Speaker 1: It was.
- 53:27Speaker 5: If the zone existed, you might have been eaten alive.
- 53:30Speaker 6: Whether it be, you know, the VHS, you know, and
- 53:32Speaker 6: soon-to-be DVDs of it, or clothing. You know, at the time,
- 53:36Speaker 6: we had all those Hawaiian-style button-ups with, like, you know, anime.
- 53:40Speaker 6: Trigun and Dragon Ball Z all over them.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Speaking of classy.
- 53:43Speaker 6: And everyone's wearing these Terrible bright-colored glam shirts. And the
- 53:48Speaker 6: figures and stuff. But honestly, I mean, where else? At
- 53:50Speaker 6: that time, like I said, this is when Adult Swim
- 53:52Speaker 6: was first breaking and Cowboy Bebop was blowing up and
- 53:54Speaker 6: Trigon was blowing up. You know, people were having more
- 53:59Speaker 6: of reference to anime besides, you know, just Akira and
- 54:01Speaker 6: Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll. Yeah, that was Suncoast's niche.
- 54:05Speaker 6: Too bad they wanted to charge $ 32. 99 for those anime
- 54:08Speaker 6: DVDs and ran them all off.
- 54:10Speaker 1: I mean, was that... they're doing? Or I mean, how
- 54:13Speaker 1: much of that was just whatever source? Yeah, whatever source
- 54:17Speaker 1: they were getting from. I mean, I wonder how much
- 54:20Speaker 1: that was one of those things. They couldn't, but you
- 54:23Speaker 1: couldn't explain that to the kids. They're just like, I'm 12.
- 54:26Speaker 1: I don't have anything.
- 54:28Speaker 6: Most of the time, if you were lucky, you had
- 54:29Speaker 6: four episodes on there. Imagine doing that with anything.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 54:32Speaker 6: X-Files, Firefly, anything going, Here's four episodes of this show
- 54:36Speaker 6: for $ 32.
- 54:36Speaker 4: 99.
- 54:36Speaker 1: Well, they kind of did that, like, in those early days. Like,
- 54:40Speaker 1: if you remember when they would sell, like, when they
- 54:42Speaker 1: first started doing, like, those X-Files, like, I got a
- 54:45Speaker 1: couple of the LaserDisc. There were two episodes on there.
- 54:48Speaker 10: Oh, wow.
- 54:48Speaker 1: It was, like, $ 34. 99, and I was like, what a rip. But, like,
- 54:52Speaker 1: there were one or two that, like, were really good,
- 54:54Speaker 1: and I wanted a version of. So it's like, I
- 54:57Speaker 1: only got a couple of them because of that. Was
- 54:59Speaker 1: it Home?
- 54:59Speaker 6: What was the one with Ice?
- 55:00Speaker 1: Well, it was the first one.
- 55:01Speaker 6: Ice was cool because it's the thing ripoff. Like, Chris
- 55:04Speaker 6: Carter admits it's his thing ripoff. So it's like, I
- 55:06Speaker 6: remember I got that one. Home is the one everybody loves.
- 55:09Speaker 1: It's badass.
- 55:10Speaker 5: It's badass.
- 55:12Speaker 6: You know, I heard that it might have been you
- 55:14Speaker 6: that told me, because I want to say we were
- 55:16Speaker 6: talking about it so much. That was apparently loosely based
- 55:19Speaker 6: on Charlie Chaplin's autobiography.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 55:22Speaker 6: I think I'm getting the name right.
- 55:24Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 55:24Speaker 6: I thought it was Charlie Chapman. Apparently he wrote about
- 55:28Speaker 6: staying with some weird people in the South at some
- 55:31Speaker 6: point when he was in between places or staying over
- 55:34Speaker 6: someplace and something of that nature happened where there was
- 55:39Speaker 6: like a sibling or a parent figure that had some
- 55:43Speaker 6: crazy type of handicap and was on some kind of
- 55:45Speaker 6: moving board thing something to where one of the x-files
- 55:49Speaker 6: writers like read about or something was like oh my
- 55:50Speaker 6: gosh that's crazy and like incorporated it or something it's
- 55:53Speaker 6: crazy yeah i don't know i'm trying to remember other
- 55:59Speaker 6: stories and.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Stuff decide if i can not end up back at
- 56:03Speaker 1: read if it's just gonna be a couple hours a
- 56:05Speaker 1: week it's like just throw me back into something stupid
- 56:08Speaker 1: i can live with that for as long as i
- 56:09Speaker 1: have to.
- 56:10Speaker 6: Oh it's crazy Like I said, I just left Hot
- 56:12Speaker 6: Topic a couple weeks ago. What's crazy is that they
- 56:17Speaker 6: are– it was like deja vu with Suncoast. And I
- 56:19Speaker 6: told all of them that. I was like, everything that
- 56:21Speaker 6: is happening here at Hot Topic feels just like Suncoast.
- 56:25Speaker 5: Which is– In the last days.
- 56:26Speaker 1: And that's what I told all my coworkers.
- 56:28Speaker 6: I was like, this is exactly the same, which makes
- 56:32Speaker 6: me wonder how much you're telling us because it's like
- 56:34Speaker 6: they're pushing all these new kind of programs, little gimmicky things.
- 56:37Speaker 6: They're grinding on us. Like, they started, and I know
- 56:41Speaker 6: big places have this stuff.
- 56:42Speaker 1: That's what they do, yeah.
- 56:42Speaker 6: They started focusing on conversion. Conversion is something that usually
- 56:46Speaker 6: only bigger stores care about. Conversion is that they have
- 56:49Speaker 6: counters now that count how many people come in the store,
- 56:53Speaker 6: and you have to sell something to a certain percentage.
- 56:55Speaker 6: And it's like, Jesus.
- 56:57Speaker 1: I hate corporate.
- 56:58Speaker 6: We're a hangout store. People don't come in to shop.
- 57:02Speaker 6: I go in there all the time. I couldn't tell
- 57:04Speaker 6: you the last time I bought something. I just walk
- 57:06Speaker 6: in to see what the dorky shirts.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Are, and then I go back out.
- 57:09Speaker 6: I don't go there and buy stuff all that often, really,
- 57:12Speaker 6: and that's why.
- 57:13Speaker 5: Sell it for an honest price, Hot Topic. You know,
- 57:16Speaker 5: we only go in there when we have the dollar baggy.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Jeans in the back.
- 57:20Speaker 4: Right.
- 57:21Speaker 1: No, thank you.
- 57:22Speaker 5: How many Korn shirts do they honestly sell?
- 57:24Speaker 6: None.
- 57:25Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 57:25Speaker 6: They haven't carried Korn in years and years and years.
- 57:29Speaker 1: I always got mine at Gadzooks.
- 57:30Speaker 6: But how many One Direction shirts do we have?
- 57:33Speaker 1: Really? Fourteen?
- 57:35Speaker 6: Yeah, probably two dozen.
- 57:36Speaker 4: Really?
- 57:37Speaker 10: One Direction.
- 57:39Speaker 5: One Direction's down.
- 57:40Speaker 6: Bieber on and off. Heavy when he first broke, but
- 57:43Speaker 6: now it's One Direction. Tons of One Direction shirts. Gosh,
- 57:48Speaker 6: you all. I mean, it's... There's nothing niche about it anymore.
- 57:52Speaker 6: Like I said, they're grasping at straws. That's what's crazy
- 57:54Speaker 6: is that, you know, back in the day, you know,
- 57:56Speaker 6: even the logo itself used to say underneath all about
- 57:58Speaker 6: the music. And at some point they changed the logo
- 58:01Speaker 6: and they took that off because they essentially didn't want
- 58:03Speaker 6: to be.
- 58:04Speaker 1: I always felt like they were kind of like, it
- 58:06Speaker 1: was just sort of the pop culture thing.
- 58:08Speaker 6: It's just like, whatever's big right now, that's what we're
- 58:10Speaker 6: going to stop. Kind of that same thing that Suncoast
- 58:11Speaker 6: would do for one shipment. And then we're moving on
- 58:13Speaker 6: to the next thing, like, which is fine, really.
- 58:15Speaker 1: I mean, if that's what you are. That's, you know, hell,
- 58:18Speaker 1: that's the way to make money.
- 58:19Speaker 6: They jock Minecraft. They jock My Little Pony. They jock
- 58:22Speaker 6: Doctor Who. They jock, like, Disney. As I was going out,
- 58:25Speaker 6: they're carrying a ton of Disney.
- 58:27Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 58:27Speaker 1: I mean, that's got a huge market. You can't deny.
- 58:30Speaker 6: You know, that's not a... Not a music store.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Well, it never felt like a music store to me, though. Like,
- 58:36Speaker 1: it was such... It was all trend. Yeah, it's like
- 58:39Speaker 1: it was all.
- 58:39Speaker 6: Even then, like, even in the beginning, they had a
- 58:41Speaker 6: little section, but I'm like, it didn't feel like you
- 58:43Speaker 6: were at Music Land, you know? I was just like,
- 58:45Speaker 6: it felt like it was mostly a trend store, and
- 58:48Speaker 6: then they carried some, you know, CDs over there.
- 58:50Speaker 1: So, I don't know. They always billed it like it
- 58:52Speaker 1: was music, but I'm like, I always just felt like
- 58:54Speaker 1: that's more of what it was anyway. It was just like,
- 58:56Speaker 1: whatever's kind of obviously hot, it's in your fucking title. So, yeah,
- 59:00Speaker 1: I mean, I... I felt like that was kind of
- 59:03Speaker 1: what they were built to be. But that's what I
- 59:05Speaker 1: was going to ask you is like, if I'm desperate
- 59:06Speaker 1: enough to go back and work somewhere, is that going
- 59:09Speaker 1: to be equal? as bad? And, like, from what you're saying,
- 59:13Speaker 1: it's equally as bad.
- 59:14Speaker 6: It's the reason I lost. It's the reason I lost.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Yep.
- 59:16Speaker 6: Like, you know, the first six years were fine because
- 59:23Speaker 6: they were fine, frankly. Yeah.
- 59:25Speaker 1: I mean, they were doing really good when they hit
- 59:27Speaker 1: their stride. That place was probably making a hell.
- 59:31Speaker 6: Of a lot of money.
- 59:32Speaker 5: Especially Twilight.
- 59:33Speaker 6: Yeah. After Napoleon Dynamite, which was bizarre. Napoleon Dynamite came out.
- 59:37Speaker 6: It's still bizarre. But the product was. That's what was bizarre.
- 59:42Speaker 6: At the time, movie shirts were not a big deal.
- 59:45Speaker 6: That was so strange.
- 59:46Speaker 1: That's when I was wearing them.
- 59:48Speaker 6: At the time, the novelty shirts were obscure. They were
- 59:53Speaker 6: trying anime a little. But they were mostly word tees. Like,
- 59:57Speaker 6: usually the novel stuff was word teased, stupid, silly, dumb
- 1:00:00Speaker 6: phrases that were played out. You know, some invader zim,
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: some stuff like that. Then Napoleon Dynamite happened, and that's
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: what changed everything for them. Then it was like, oh
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: my gosh, what movie's coming out?
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Can we sell our shirts?
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: Yeah, then it completely changed. And man, I don't know
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: if it was a bubble effect or what, because it
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: was hot for a minute, and then next thing you know, like,
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: the owner is... stepping down and they're closing 200 and
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: something stores and all this stuff hit the fan and
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: next thing you know here's your nicki minaj shirts here's
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: your justin bieber shirts here's your you know one direction
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: shirts thank you amazon.com it just it completely shifted you
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: know they're like we're not going to carry trip pants
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: anymore we're not going to carry anything you know with
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: chains and spikes on it anymore like get us all
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: the neon colors you can um skinny denim you know
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: it was It was strange. It was very strange. But
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: they're so desperate now. You know, if you work there,
- 1:00:53Speaker 6: you can just feel the desperation of hell. They just
- 1:00:56Speaker 6: want to carry anything that can sell. And at the
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: same time, in the Suncoast reference, man, they grind on you. Like,
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: they didn't used to be in a number that... They
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: cared about numbers, but not as an individual.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 6: And now they do. Now it's like, you had an
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: APT of this. You had a UPT of this.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: That kills me.
- 1:01:13Speaker 6: You only got this many memberships. You only did this percentage.
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: You.
- 1:01:17Speaker 6: only you know and it's like.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I can't do that wow drives me crazy i don't.
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: Get commission you bring these people in minimum wage mall
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: jobs yeah you want them to fight to keep their
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: job you know it's like if you hit those numbers
- 1:01:29Speaker 6: yeah you get something extra it's yeah you get to
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: keep your lame job like it's not like the and
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: that's what all those big stores started doing that like
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: all your your like corporate run electronics your best buy
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: kind of thing started that We're not commissioned. So we're
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: going to go out of our way to make sure
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: you know we're not commissioned, but then we're going to
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: push everybody so that it seems like we're on commission
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: because they're going to be obnoxious about everything. And customers
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: think that. It's a thing. You would get people that
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: would be like, You know, now, do you need to
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: ring me up for this?
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: I'm like, no.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: And you're like, doesn't really matter. I'm not getting a
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: damn thing.
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: Yeah, you can go to the counter. I don't have
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: to be the one to ring you up. I'm like, well,
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: are you going to get your cut?
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I'm like, cut? I don't get anything.
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: I don't think you understand how capitalism works, man.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Not at the mall.
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: This is not communism. I do not get a share
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: of this.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Yeah, there were a few stores at the beginning that
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: were doing that, like the clothing stores. I know there
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: was one that I went there, and within about five minutes,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: they went.
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: I don't think so. And it was just not even me. Like,
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: they could just tell I wasn't that. Like, again, I
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: belonged at Suncoast.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Like, I was just a geek. And I went into
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: the trendy clothing store because I was hard up for work. Like,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I was there part-time, and I was trying to find
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: something else. And, like, they were just like, we were
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: both looking at each other going, this is not going
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: to work. Like, it was just very obvious, like, this
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: is not where I belong. So, yeah, it's, I don't know.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: It's weird, the demise of the retail industry.
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: Situation it's not like it was i don't think it'll
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: ever go back to the way it was and you
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: expect it anymore yeah unfortunate because like like i was
- 1:02:58Speaker 6: saying before you know gosh almost all my jobs you
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: know video games movies and music all three of them
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: because i mean you're not even gonna start on game
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: stop i don't know if you guys are still gamers
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: i'm a ridiculous gamer dude you go on any game
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: stop It's obnoxious. The moment you walk in, would you
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: bring in the trade-in today? Nothing, I'm just looking.
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: It's like going to a used car salesman.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: And, you know, it's the kind of thing where... And
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: I understand. Having been there, especially, I understand it sucks
- 1:03:27Speaker 6: when someone doesn't buy something.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I did that, too, if you remember. I was at the...
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Before it became GameStop, I was there before they all
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: melded into one big thing.
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: Yeah, was it Babbage's?
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I started at Babbage's. I ended up working at Software Etc.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: And then.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: At that point, I think I gave up right when
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: they were about to all become GameStop. They had just
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: gotten bought out by the same company and they were
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: about to form into one big company.
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: If you go in there and you buy something and
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: you don't reserve something, I mean, you feel like you
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: kicked that dude in the balls. Or you kicked that
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: girl in the taco because she is so just knows.
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: You're killing her numbers for not reserving something.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: And then they got, because I remember before I left,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: it became a very big I mean, it became such
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: a big deal that even within the system, they started
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: like finding ways to try to rework it. And then
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: they started like crucifying those people. Like I remember our,
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: and he was one of the managers for that whole area.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: And like, I still don't even know officially how much
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: was really going on and what was good, but basically
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: they accused him of, doctoring things to make it look
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: like they had more reserves than they did because that's
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: how much you got in. And it became very obvious
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: that people wouldn't reserve, but they wanted to come in
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: and buy it when it came out. They just didn't
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: want to put their money down, but they wanted to
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: be able to walk in. And it got to the
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: point where the stores would not send them, like the
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: company would not send it to your store if you
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: did not have the reserve. All you would get was
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: enough to cover your reserves. And I still don't know
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: how much of that was true, but they said that
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: he was reworking stuff and he was like, Messing with
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: it enough that it looked like they had more reserves
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: than they did so they would get extra in so
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: that we could sell them to people that walked in
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: off the street. And I'm like, that is ridiculous. All
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: he was trying to do was make your store money.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: It was the stupid paperwork end of it, the numbers
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: part of it. Whatever was being manipulated, at the end
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: of the day, you still got your money.
- 1:05:24Speaker 6: All he was trying to do.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Was make the... Again, I understand there's some sort of
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: internal issues there and they are going to get bent
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: out of shape. Whether or not it really happened, I
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: don't even know, but I know that's what they ended
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: up firing him for.
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: I apparently came in, and honestly, I'm not rehirable. I
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: actually tried to work there as a temp last Christmas,
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: and the guy tried to and started to do the paperwork,
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: and I guess my DM put me in as not
- 1:05:52Speaker 6: rehirable because I came in on the coattails of some
- 1:05:55Speaker 6: crazy shenanigans. Apparently, the DM was incredibly shady. and they
- 1:06:01Speaker 6: sent this other guy in to essentially get rid of
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: the DM and then pretty much get rid of all
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: the managers. And I have no idea what's going on.
- 1:06:07Speaker 6: I'm like this new, you know, I come in, you know,
- 1:06:10Speaker 6: it's this third key, and pretty much I'm on the
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: chopping block because, you know, I was there before this
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: new DM came in. But, yeah, I was hearing stories about,
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: I guess at the DM level, you know, they must
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: make a lot of money because, like, they would have
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: these contests with these DMs where, like, you win a car.
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: It's like whatever district gets the most, you know, reserves
- 1:06:29Speaker 6: for Halo 2, you know, you get this new car.
- 1:06:33Speaker 6: And apparently our DM in particular was just killing these contests. Just,
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: you know, was just had vacations and cars and all
- 1:06:41Speaker 6: this stuff.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Jesus.
- 1:06:42Speaker 6: Well, come to find out, like, they go to the
- 1:06:44Speaker 6: store and there's like 500 copies of Halo 2 in
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: their closet. And they're like, why do you have so
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: many copies of Halo 2? And it's because they faked
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: so many reservations. That is awesome. You know, to win
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: this contest that they're sitting on this disgusting amount of inventory.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: I mean, there is a line. There is a line
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: where it is ridiculous, and it is, like, shady what
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: you're up to, especially when they're giving you prizes and stuff. But, like,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: The way that I heard the other one is more of, like,
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: he was just trying to get in product for the stores.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: He was trying to cover his stores. Yeah, he was, like,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: he was trying to make the stores, you know, represent
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: what they're there for. That's the whole point is you're
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: supposed to be able to walk in and buy this game. And, like,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: he was trying to make That happened for his stores.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: I'm just like, he's... In a way, he's doing his job,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: but you guys have found a weird way that make
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: him jump through these hoops so that he can't do
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: his job, or if he does, he gets fired, which
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: is what happened.
- 1:07:38Speaker 6: It's a bizarre philosophy. It's kind of like what I
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: was kind of saying about, you know, how kind of grumpy...
- 1:07:43Speaker 6: How they don't even hide their, you know, their displeasure
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: when you don't, like, reserve something. They're so open about
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: kind of not being... mean, but it's passive aggressive. You know,
- 1:07:57Speaker 6: even when, you know, you don't do it and you
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: get that, usually you get at least that snide comment. Well,
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: when it's not here, you know, when it comes out,
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: you get that kind of thing where it's like, dude.
- 1:08:07Speaker 6: I don't need your passive aggressiveness. But that's so common.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: But it's the same thing. It's true.
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: It's so commonplace there.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Yeah. You realize that's true. Like, you, from the other end,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I'm just like, no, really. We're not going to have
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: it for you.
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: It's like it comes off like they're kind of being
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: snippy with you.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:19Speaker 6: But then you realize, like, oh, no, wait. That's the
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: company's mentality.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Well, and we'd done that. Like, we'd had people, like,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: we'd say, well, you know, we might not have enough
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: when it comes in. And then they would come in
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: on opening day and they'd be like, hey, where's one?
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I want a copy. And we're like, I told you to.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: I'm like.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I wasn't lying when I said we're not going to
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: get them. Like, that's how this company operates.
- 1:08:37Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: It's a weird situation. I think it's part of why
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: retail has, like, completely, like, the huge decline. Like, there
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: are no stores like that anymore. It's all, like, super
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: corporate stuff. And it's almost all, like, you look. This
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: is something I noticed once they closed our store in
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: that particular mall. And then if you go to just
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: about any mall, it's like that. Walk around. like are
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: there any products there anymore it's all clothes it's just
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: which I guess is what you go to the mall
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: for when you're a 14 year old girl but like
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: I went there to get stuff you know it's like
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: but it's all like just high-end clothing stores and that's
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: all it is.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: I just pre-ordered Star Trek Into Darkness and you know
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: who didn't try to get me to pre-order anything else? Amazon.com.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: And that's why they're still around.
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: See? I think if people ever got comfortable with buying
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: clothes on internet I think malls would go away. I
- 1:09:28Speaker 6: think clothing is just you want to try that. You've
- 1:09:31Speaker 6: got to be able to check and see if it works.
- 1:09:33Speaker 6: The hassle of returning clothing you know through mail is
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: just too much of a pain.
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: We just have these graveyards we went to to get
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: Sparrow's pizza and walk around. Yeah.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Which is all I really want to do. That would
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: be fun. I just want to hang out there and
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: have some pizza. Where's the arcades? How come there are
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: no arcades at the mall anymore?
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: Which takes us to number five.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: Which is?
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: I have no idea.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: You're just making shit up.
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: We've got to save. Well, I guess we can go
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: and get the Klingon sisters out.
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: Klingon.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I think that's the teaser. I think we need to
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: wrap this one up and we'll come back. next time
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: and give you guys that. We've actually got stuff coming
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: up in the next few weeks, so I think we're
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: just going to hold off, and then next time you
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: come back, We'll fire him with the rest of these.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: And truthfully, we are saving the big guns. There's a
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: grand finale that's coming your way.
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: If you've already fallen asleep, wake back up.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: There's going to be... I mean, we have a lot
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: on him because he's a character. Yeah, especially with the co-workers, too. Oh, yeah,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: we got some other choice co-workers. Yeah, so I think
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: we'll leave you wanting a little more or wishing you
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: hadn't listened to all this. I'm not sure which, but... Yeah,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: we'll wrap it up here and come back for another
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: episode in a few weeks out. We'll finish this thing up. Otherwise,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: that about does it. We will return next week. Same
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening. Come on, Jessica.
