- 0:16SPEAKER_03: There it is, it's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show we normally do where we taste and we rank some beer.
- 0:24SPEAKER_03: Phil sitting here in the seat tonight.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: I've got Brett Ross and Damon here with me.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: And how are we feeling tonight, fellas?
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Hey, we're doing it for this one.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Feeling like a dragon's left wing.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Not the right one, just the left.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: How's that feel?
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: No strong.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Leathery.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Leathery.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: That's what I was thinking.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: As I scooch a few inches away from David.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: Well, we are uh gonna taste some beer tonight.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: What are we uh drinking?
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: This is the Light Shine Hell Hellas uh from Wivy Brewing Company out of Longmont, Colorado.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Longmont checking in.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, buddy.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: I think we got a follower in Longmont.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: We do, Clint.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: This is for you.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: So you better get some of this beer.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Uh so let's talk about this beer a little bit.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Um, initial impressions, I guess.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: Everybody try try Sid.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: What do we think?
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: That's that's pretty good.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: That's a nice refreshing beer.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Nice light.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: I'm curious as it warms up in my glass if it mellows out a little bit because it does feel a little sharp at the end on my palate.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I don't know if that's just the how Hellas Hellas's hell how Hellasi are.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Uh but I I agree.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I like it as well.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: You know, it only takes us a couple of minutes to go off the rails.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: It's fine.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: It's fine, it's fine.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Uh so speaking of Hellas style-wise, uh, we had to check into this a little bit, right?
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: So what do we determine a Hellas is, for anyone that might not know?
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I got that.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Uh Damon, what were your first thoughts?
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Hold on, he's drinking over there.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Give him a break.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: He's still ruminating the question.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: My first thought was that it was uh probably a local name of a style that developed somewhere locally.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: And that was accurate, right?
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so a Hellis, uh, which is Hell in German, if you didn't know that, is a German pale lager beer uh that is chiefly found in southern Germany around Munich.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Uh and it was actually brewed as a response to the Czech Pilsner in the late 19th century.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: So Pilsner's like people are probably most American Pilsner is a very popular style of beer in America.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: Um go figure.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, light, crisp, clean.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: People refer to them as refreshing.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: This is certainly all of those things, it seems.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Those boxes.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't mind having an orange wedge or something to to put in this.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: I would agree with that too.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Almost um I it's not a wheat taste, but it has that.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: I want that.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: I want that citrus.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: I feel like it needs the citrus.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Lemon, that's what I'm doing for.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think what what I I'm just curious, like what what does that bring to the party for you?
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Like, is it just a little bit of sweetness?
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Is it just something else?
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: What it what is it?
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Uh I think part of it uh for and this is not a knock against this beer.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Um part of it for me is yeah, just a little bit something else going on in the beer.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Um I think for me too, it would bring a little brightness maybe to it, almost lift it just a little bit.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: It's good, but I yeah, I don't know.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: It just breaks breaks like the m monotone, again, not trying to be critical, just the the monotone flavor that's there kind of thing.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: I d uh I don't know.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I would monotone, but yeah, I don't know if I would I think it this one has a fuller mouthfeel than like an American pilsner though.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Like there's yeah, there's more to it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: It doesn't feel as thin.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: I would agree with that.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Um this according to the can, this beer won the grand gold uh medal at the Frankfurt International Trophy in 2018.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: Oh congratulations.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: So it's won some awards, so I take back everything I said about being monotone.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: If that means I mean I mean some styles are supposed to be monotone.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: If that's the word one flavor.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Let's say just let's just change that to one flavor.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Monotone seems overly negative.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: It has a single flavor profile throughout yes, thank you.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: That is exactly as it was designed to be, because it's won an award for it.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: There's a certain sort of uh uh purity and simplicity.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Perfect sometimes.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys for translating my ass holishness tonight.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Guess who's not getting beer when they go to Colorado?
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Especially from the brewery of the year at the Great American Beer Festival in 2023.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Uh for breweries that produce 5,000 to 15,000 barrels a year.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: And that is an informative can.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: What else is on that?
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: That's a lot jammed on here.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Well done.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Uh the official description from Wibby Brewing is this light golden Bavarian influence lager will keep you on Wibby Brewing's patio 30 minutes after you're meant to be home from work.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: And then it just goes on to say that the Light Shine Hellas most notably won the Grand Gold Best in show at the 2018 Frankfurt International Trophy.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: This is a great summer beer.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Like oh yeah, for sure.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Have one of these after you've been outside when it's really hot.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Come inside to have one of these.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: It's also one too where I don't think I would just probably stop at one.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: Like it was pretty good.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: I'd drink another.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: I agree with that.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: It's like it's not uh, I guess we haven't even talked ABV, but it doesn't like knock it out of the park.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: 5.5%.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Pretty doable.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Uh low on IBUs.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: 22.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: 22.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And of course that golden color.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: It is a beautiful beer.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a bit and it's clear as well.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Like there's there's no haze in it or yeah, not like weed at all.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Wheat at all.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: I bet people like it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: I bet they sell a lot of it.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: I would guess so.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: They've won some awards.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Uh describe the can a little bit.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: I think I don't think we hit on that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: We talked about all the words, but how's it look?
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: It's primarily yellow and black, uh, with uh mountains, and then like a I would say it's like a setting setting sun, but I think the sun is just behind the word light shine.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: It's not necessarily setting.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: And then their logo is like a W.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: The middle part of the W is a mountain, and then they have mountains in reverse above it.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Their logo looks like the Wonder Woman insignia.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: That star makes it look like that for sure.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: And like the light shine logo, it looks like what was my initial thought when I saw the yeah, yeah.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: I'm like, oh, is there honey in there?
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: No.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: Can't remember.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: That looks to me like like one of the old Mountain Dew logos, or like that sun something I can't put my finger on.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Bear with me for a second.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: My American marketing.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Have you heard the song Afternoon Delight before?
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: That's when that's when the skyrockets fly around.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: When I hear that song, this is the font that pops into my mind.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: It feels very 70sy to me.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: And there's nothing wrong with afternoon delight.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Everybody loves afternoon delight, right?
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: This beer could be your afternoon delight.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: It could absolutely be your afternoon delight.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Maybe that was intentional marketing right there.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Take your poison.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: Gonna grab my honey gun holder tuck, gonna have some afternoon before we totally lose this trade.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: We should maybe uh center this back into our world of uh Dungeons and Dragons a little bit here.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: And where might we find such a beer as this?
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: And what would you call it?
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: So I am gonna go way to the south in Ormouth, uh, which is kind of in the rolling open fields in southern Faroon.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: And we are headed to the Golden Sheaf.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Nice little tavern out on the prairie.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And they are serving the South Winds Gold.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: That is evocative.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Dipping into the thesaurus tonight.
- 8:39unknown: Okay.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Well, some of us.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: It was what why are you looking at me when you say that?
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying now's your opponent's your opportunity.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, fine.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Uh for me, we're gonna go out uh far east of Baldur's Gate, uh, even past El Torel to Hardbuckler, to the Golden Griffin Inn, where you will find the dragon's ire.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Uh and the legend says that the original brewmaster uh owed a debt to a silver dragon, and then to order to appease his debt, he had to brew him a beer, and this is what he came up with.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Can you take out a loan from a silver dragon?
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Can I meet this dragon?
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: You need some money?
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I want to go visit and like be a guest.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: How much beer does this dragon have?
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I want to know how much beer he had to brew to appease the dragon.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: He's still paying off his life.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: 15,000 barrels.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Can we do a one-shot to this dragon?
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Let's absolutely do that.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: What was the beer name?
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: I didn't dragon.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: The dragon's eye.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: See, I used a big word, a big little word.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: I say it's like what, three letters?
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: It's three letters, but it's a big word, man.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: It's small but motive.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Well, you uh let's see.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: Brett went That's what she said.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: South.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Uh Ross went east.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Ross went east.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: He said.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know if I'm necessarily going a direction, but my I'm in a mountain town.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, ooh, okay.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Uh uh I'm high up in the slopes.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: It's very sort of like the can.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, very sort of clean, crisp beer made me think of like a crisp mountain morning, right?
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: Uh and so at the Pinewood Tavern, uh, every year there's a there's a festival.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Folks get they get together and it's a race to the top of the mountain.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: And before the adventurers take off, they all have a pint of this ale known simply as House Lager One.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: First beer they ever made, and they've had it at every festival uh since the dawn of time.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Speaking of festivals on top of mountains, have you heard of the Cooper's Hill cheese rolling competition?
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: That's what they maybe they have that at the top of this.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: They push the cheese up the hill.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Cheese down.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: That's how the cheese gets up.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So they get up there, have a couple pints, and then roll the cheese down and chase after it.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: I would pay to see that.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, that would be so much fun.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Road trip.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: We're gonna need an airplane.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, might take a flight, but okay.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Um well I uh don't I didn't pick a direction where I'm gonna put this beer specifically.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: In the middle.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Uh but it's gonna be in a small village, uh, probably the only tavern in town.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: Um it's Abe's alehouse, is where they're gonna serve this, and he tends to the flock as they travel through on their way on their journeys, and he's serving Angel Tears is what he's named this beer.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: I don't have any other story, but he just serves the wandering travelers on their way in his small village.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Um in the other realm of DD Nerdum, uh challenge rating score.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: So for those that are maybe first-time listeners or just those who need a refresher, uh, we rate these on a challenge rating of one to twenty.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: Uh kind of following the challenge rating that lives in Dungeons and Dragons, challenge rating one.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: Um we usually call cremail.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: Well, I don't know.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: I feel like we sometimes change our rules on the case.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: Easy drinking beer.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: An easy drink of beer all the way up to a CR20, uh, something like a double IPA, uh, something that not your typical beer drinker might be interested in.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: So uh, where are we putting this one?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go first so I can not get screened by Damon.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm gonna go a solid one on this one.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Like, this is a great intro to craft brewing beer.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Like, if you are coming from any sort of American mass-produced beer, this is a great one to go to.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: What was that?
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: What was that, Rob?
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: I'm taking it all in.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: I'm taking it all in.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Uh actually, I agree with all the things that you said.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, I would not put it at a one though.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: I I would do more of like a six.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: I think I think just the the bitterness in it would still turn some people off.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: It's still a little too far away from from a cores or a bud or something like that.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: But in terms of some of the other things that we've had, it's certainly low on the scale.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: So higher than a one, but uh six is where I'd put it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's tough to um because it is uh relatively straightforward in terms of flavor profile.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: Like um, I was thinking that so like sometimes if you put the the orange or the citrus or something on top of it, then in that in like in people's minds, that makes it more approachable for them in some ways.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: Um, but and so but then but you can also have the reverse effect of it as well of like I really just wanted a beer.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: I really didn't want anything else in it.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think that this tastes like a beer.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'm gonna go low as well.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say I'm gonna say two.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: This is I don't I don't think this is a challenging beer at all.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: And to Damon's point, too, right?
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: So we've definitely tried some beers that don't taste like beer, right?
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: So this one, if if you like beer.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Beers to you, pickle beers.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: Hey, don't knock the pickle beers.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Uh if you like beer and maybe you don't like heavy beers, yeah.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: This is like the perfect beer for you.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: It's also a great beer to drink, as we mentioned in the summer.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: This would be perfect coming in off mow after mowing the lawn.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: I can knock back a few of these.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: Um I'm thinking I feel like I've never rated a beer one.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: It just feels wrong, but sure, why not?
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: One.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: Oh we'll just do it.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, go for it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Gotta break the seal at some point.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: So Phil's already said he wants another one.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Yay.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: I'm definitely a yay as well.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: I'd take another one.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Yay here.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: I already dipped back into one of the other cans.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Damon.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: How is this question phrased again?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Yay or nay?
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: I love forced binaries.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Let's go for it.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Straightforward.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, yay, then, in that case.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: Almost like a would you drink it again?
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Basically.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Yay or nay.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: It's in our three-letter segment.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Three-letter words like that.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Higher.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Higher, higher.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Yay and nay.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Three three-letter words.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Four.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: No.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Four letters.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: Good try though.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: You broke the rule.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: So close.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Fail.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Also four letters.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: You can do this forever.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Well, that's I got a good job.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: Oh, you press whatever thing you get.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: This has been the Light Shine Hellas from Wibby Brewing out of Longmont, Colorado.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: To see more about Wibby Brewing's beers, you can find them at Wibby Brewing.com.
