Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Bearcat chat, a podcast for everything
- 0:04Scottsbluff School. Welcome everyone to the third
- 0:15episode of the Bearcat chat, the podcast about everything
- 0:19Scottsbluff schools, I'm Melissa price and it's December, we are
- 0:25getting ready to have winter break, the holidays are coming
- 0:29up, and I think at this time of year, this is a time where a lot
- 0:34of people think or focused a lot on giving.
- 0:38So this episode, we've decided Added to really showcase some of
- 0:45the organization's who without their help.
- 0:47We wouldn't be able to do some of the great work that we do for
- 0:51our students every day. So with me right now is Beth
- 0:55Moore. Hi Bev.
- 0:56Hi Melissa. How are you good?
- 0:59That is the director of the Scottsville Public Schools
- 1:02foundation and the foundation does so much for us really at
- 1:07all at all levels of our school but I don't know.
- 1:11If a lot of people really understand what the foundation
- 1:15does or how it works so Beth can you maybe start off by telling
- 1:19us a little bit about what the foundation is, what your mission
- 1:23is and tell us about the work that you do.
- 1:26Yeah, I'd love to Melissa. So the Scottsville Public
- 1:30Schools, Foundation was actually formed in 1988 by some great
- 1:36business partners who, who wanted to just Ridge Community
- 1:42funds for projects in the schools that we're just not in
- 1:47the budget and they're in the nationally at that time.
- 1:51There was a big push for school foundations because people saw
- 1:54that shortfall in school budgets.
- 1:57And so this was formed and we've been around for a lot of years.
- 2:01We are a 501 c 3, nonprofit organization that is separate
- 2:08from the district but Our mission is to support, District
- 2:13driven initiatives and teachers and students at all levels.
- 2:19Okay. Well, I think you brought some
- 2:21really good points the first being that if you really want to
- 2:25look at this, like from a community taxpayer perspective,
- 2:29the work of the foundation helps to alleviate some of that.
- 2:33Local tax burden, right? Yeah, it really does there's
- 2:37just always a shortfall and not just hearing Gospel of but
- 2:41really Across the Nation in school funding and and this is
- 2:47one way that our community can pull together and support
- 2:50education, right? And I think it can.
- 2:53What it really comes down to is not just, we may be able to fund
- 2:58through our normal funding formula through our local tech
- 3:01support. The things that we, the minimum
- 3:04things that we need to do to provide an education, but I
- 3:06really think that it's about providing some of those extra as
- 3:10and the things that really allow us to provide a really
- 3:14high-quality education. Exactly.
- 3:17And so that just that's that's exactly our mission.
- 3:21Our mission is to raise the funds for support and
- 3:24Improvement of educational programs and really enhance.
- 3:28What is already being taught, teachers can just go a little
- 3:31bit deeper with classroom grants well okay so tell me this how
- 3:36directly does the foundation because I think you have to look
- 3:39at it through The lens of students, as well as Bruce staff
- 3:43and that sort of work that how does the foundation Provide
- 3:46support directly to students. The Mets.
- 3:50I think the main reason the main source of support is our
- 3:55classroom grants. This is a this is a program that
- 3:58really affects students at every school and at every level
- 4:02teachers who want to go deeper who have an idea for a program
- 4:07or teaching unit that is outside of the budget and is innovative.
- 4:13They can apply for a classroom Grant twice a year and and they
- 4:17are funded that way through the foundation.
- 4:19Yeah, that really gives. I think those teachers that
- 4:22opportunity to get really creative and really innovate
- 4:24some things and it kind of creates these pilot projects
- 4:29where if if it works well in a couple of places then that gives
- 4:34us the opportunities that District you look at those
- 4:37things and see if we can Implement that on a little bit
- 4:40of a larger scale. Yeah, yeah that's happened quite
- 4:43a few times with with a few classroom grants they have been
- 4:47been put into the District budget.
- 4:49So, the foundation also supports students by the way of
- 4:53scholarships, so tell me a little bit about that.
- 4:55You know, we have a pretty robust scholarship program,
- 4:59we're adding for this year, our newest scholarship that I'm
- 5:03really excited about is the para to teacher scholarship.
- 5:07This is just a way to pour the foundation to help the district
- 5:13and trying to build that teacher pipeline, is this is a problem
- 5:17nationally that we are feeling. Here in Scottsbluff as well and
- 5:22to use our own Paris and to support their education, as they
- 5:28go on to get their teaching. Certificate is a really good
- 5:31thing. It feels like just a win-win for
- 5:33everyone. Yeah.
- 5:35And I don't think that people would necessarily think he'd
- 5:39always think of the schools or maybe even think of our
- 5:42foundation when they think about Workforce Development in the
- 5:46community, that that's exactly what this project is.
- 5:49And I think it's really something that we can get
- 5:52excited about. We have so many fabulous pair
- 5:55has in our district and to be able to provide them the support
- 5:59and me and financial help potentially to be able to
- 6:04further their education. Should they so choose?
- 6:07I think it's just really a unique opportunity that people
- 6:13aren't going to find anywhere else.
- 6:14Yeah. Very, very excited about this
- 6:16program are Paris. As are just a vital piece of the
- 6:23teacher education experience at Scott's Bluff.
- 6:26And to support them in that way. Is just, it's an honor really.
- 6:32And if you do provide student related, scholarships as well,
- 6:36yet, we have a, we have 12 students, scholarships, I really
- 6:43exciting when that you may hear more about this year as a new
- 6:46one, called the marrying dressing or golden rules.
- 6:50And this is for a female student, it's a four-year
- 6:55scholarship and it's just a great opportunity.
- 6:57A couple other. The new ones are a diesel tech
- 7:00scholarship. So this is for students, going
- 7:03into diesel tech a trade school. And then, the other new one is
- 7:10the Woodshed Woodshed culinary arts scholarship so we're really
- 7:16looking for scholarships that would align with each other.
- 7:19Career Academy. And support our seniors as they
- 7:24continue their education. Well, that's great and for
- 7:28families out there that may have a senior or maybe just an upper
- 7:32high school or in general, how can they access information or
- 7:36apply for these scholarships great questions.
- 7:38So if you go onto our website spps, foundation.com, there's a
- 7:43scholarship tab that you can click on and you can see by now
- 7:47all the information on how to apply dates to apply.
- 7:52And any other related information there.
- 7:55And that information is also made available to the
- 7:58counselor's office and on the counseling overall scholarship
- 8:03list, right? Yep.
- 8:04Yep. Okay.
- 8:06Well, changing gears a little bit.
- 8:10Those are really some great opportunities, but there's a lot
- 8:14that is very individualized about those opportunities, but
- 8:17the foundation also does work that supports student learning
- 8:21on a loan. A bit of a different scale,
- 8:23maybe a little more pull back. Tell me about some of those kind
- 8:26of projects that one of the biggest ones I that I can think
- 8:30of right now is the playground project we have like rounds now.
- 8:36So we just unveiled two playgrounds, what Roosevelt and
- 8:40one at Longfellow. And without the foundation, we
- 8:43wouldn't have been able to fund those or at least maybe not
- 8:46quite as quickly as we did. So, tell us a little bit about
- 8:49that. Yeah, this was the playground.
- 8:52Checked was really exciting. This was a fun project to take
- 8:56on, I think that so many community members, understood
- 9:00the importance of the playground in just in the students
- 9:04day-to-day lives. It's important to get out there
- 9:06and get the Wiggles out and get some energy out.
- 9:09So they can come in and really focus on learning when they're
- 9:12in the classroom. And like you said, we have
- 9:17Roosevelt and and Longfellow playgrounds installed and next
- 9:20summer the the Last three will be insult, stalled Westmore,
- 9:24Lincoln Heights and Lake minute are super excited about that.
- 9:30Westmore's will have some Ada accessibility features and I
- 9:34feel like it's it's just time for that to happen for that
- 9:38school and we've just had a ton of community support.
- 9:42We will in the spring. You can look forward to a Color
- 9:45Run for the elementary students that we're going to just make
- 9:49one last push to raise funds to Get that fully funded and I
- 9:55guess I'll take this time right now to mention, we always need
- 9:58volunteers. So if you would like to be part
- 10:01of this playground project by volunteering at the elementary
- 10:05school Color Run in the spring, you can always contact me by the
- 10:09website or call the high school, that's where my office is, but
- 10:14yeah it's a great great project. That really is exciting.
- 10:19I know I certainly I got to get right on the playground at
- 10:22Roosevelt the day the very first day that the first group, The
- 10:25kindergarteners hit that playground and it was really
- 10:29something to see so I know those will be used for years.
- 10:32Um another place where I feel like the foundation, really
- 10:36supports our learning is with career academies.
- 10:41Through The Years, there have been a whole lot of different
- 10:43ways of the foundation of supported Career Academy.
- 10:46So too. Little bit about that right now,
- 10:49the main way where we are supporting the Career Academy is
- 10:54through our CTE breakfast in the spring, we're actually moving
- 10:59it. We're not going to have it.
- 11:00This spring, we're moving it to the fall but this is a
- 11:04student-led breakfast at the high school, the career
- 11:07academies. Put that on, you'll find out
- 11:11what's happening in each Career Academy.
- 11:13Their service organization And it's a fundraiser, so you get
- 11:18breakfast. You get to hear all the exciting
- 11:20things that are happening and you can donate to your Career
- 11:25Academy of choice or for just everyone, but we use those funds
- 11:30to support them in their state and National competitions.
- 11:34Yeah. And I just think that that's
- 11:37been really important and I think that those competitions
- 11:40are really a way for the students to kind of be able to
- 11:43quantify and show, you know, the work that they've put in.
- 11:46Over, you know, especially those that go on and specialized at
- 11:50that, that specialized Academy level and do those internships
- 11:55and really dig deep into those careers.
- 11:57And I know there's also been a lot of a monetary and Equipment
- 12:02support that the foundation has provided through the years.
- 12:06The greenhouse for the Ag Department, was funded by the
- 12:09foundation and we, I think the high school is just found that,
- 12:14you know, a lot of the equipment or the things that we For this
- 12:17kind of specialized learning is just very costly.
- 12:20So yes, it's been good for us to be able to have an organization
- 12:25that we can lean on to, to not have to settle for less than
- 12:32what our students need. Yeah, II feel strongly that
- 12:36Scottsbluff Public Schools really lead in the Panhandle.
- 12:40They have been in leader. They continue to be a leader and
- 12:43we want to be part of that, we want to support the district.
- 12:46And give our students the best possible educational
- 12:50experiences, there are so foundations.
- 12:55Real purpose is, it's a fundraising organization.
- 12:59So let's talk a little bit about giving you know, it's that time
- 13:04of year. The fiscal, you know, the tax
- 13:07year is about getting ready to end for individuals, a lot of
- 13:12organizations. So what are ways that the parent
- 13:17Our parents or community members can support the foundation.
- 13:21You know, there's many ways if you want to support we obviously
- 13:25love a financial donation and that's easy to do.
- 13:29You can do that online. You can, you can mail in a
- 13:33check. These funds are They really go
- 13:39directly to the students and to the teachers, another way you
- 13:44can do that is by volunteering. We, I'm always looking for Vault
- 13:51there we need volunteers, our CTE breakfast, we need
- 13:53volunteers at special events. We also do planned giving.
- 13:58So if, if you have a life insurance policy that can be
- 14:04given to us, think of us when you are doing your estate plan.
- 14:09But we also just have an annual giving, I have an annual
- 14:14campaign campaign, we can't do the work without our
- 14:18communities. For this really is our students
- 14:22and our educational facilities. They it is a measure of our
- 14:28community and how and you can I really do believe, you cannot
- 14:32have a great Community without Great Schools.
- 14:36So we rely on you, your vital to us, but filling our mission, and
- 14:42that's absolutely right without the support of our community.
- 14:46And whether that's through Tear hours or whether that's
- 14:50financial support. We just would not be able to
- 14:53provide the opportunities to all of our students the way that we
- 14:58currently do. So if I wanted to make a gift to
- 15:02the foundation, what area would you recommend?
- 15:06Or where do you think that the greatest need is currently or
- 15:10what projects? Need funded?
- 15:12The most great question. So right now, we're really
- 15:16trying to build up that para to teacher Dollar ship fund.
- 15:21That's probably our greatest read net need right now.
- 15:25We see that as being a very important need in the district
- 15:31and we want to support that and then classroom grants.
- 15:35I'm always asking for funds for that.
- 15:38That's just, that's a way to impact the most students is
- 15:42through those classroom grants and I can give.
- 15:46So if I just want to make a general, Analyze donation.
- 15:50That goes to greatest need. That is a possibility to write.
- 15:53I don't have to specify or earmark.
- 15:56My gift in any way know that you're right.
- 15:59You could say greatest need and that will go where it is needed,
- 16:02most? Yes, hey.
- 16:04And then one final question if I make a gift, it's
- 16:08tax-deductible, right? Yes.
- 16:10All these funds are tax deductible.
- 16:13I will you'll get a letter to show when you do your taxes.
- 16:17And yeah, we just appreciate it. Much, okay, well let's begin to
- 16:20the end of the year. If anyone's looking for a little
- 16:24bit of a tax deduction, this is a great way to be able to
- 16:28achieve that for yourself but also provides so much for our
- 16:32students at the same time so bad that I feel like a like I
- 16:36learned some things but this conversation and you know,
- 16:39hopefully our listeners learn some things that they didn't
- 16:42know about what the foundation does in giving.
- 16:44But there's one last final thing that I want to talk about before
- 16:47we finish. Because I don't think you give
- 16:50yourself enough credit one other thing that you do that I think
- 16:54is so vital is you provide so much in the area of Staff
- 16:58recognition? Yeah, we that's just such an
- 17:01exciting thing. Our excellence in education
- 17:04awards are given out three times a year and this is for any staff
- 17:08member who just goes above and beyond and it's just such is
- 17:15really one of my favorite days of the year to hand those out
- 17:18there. Always Very surprised, I think
- 17:22probably every staff member deserves this, but when if you
- 17:27want to nominate someone in anyone can nominate anyone on
- 17:30our, on our website, it's just very meaningful for that person
- 17:35to be recognized because they are working so hard and just one
- 17:42thing probably should. Everybody knows what is your
- 17:45website the website is spps? Foundation.com, yes, and you're
- 17:52on social media as well. Yes, please follow us on on
- 17:55Facebook and Instagram, Instagram, at spps, foundation,
- 18:01and yeah. Stay up to up to speed on
- 18:04everything that's happening. All right.
- 18:07Well, the other nice thing that is for people to see if they
- 18:13follow me on social media is you do a lot of different things,
- 18:17featuring alumni and those are really Well, I think those are
- 18:20really enjoyable, so I would recommend people, if you're not
- 18:23following them, go out and give it a follow.
- 18:26If you lived in this area, if you grew up and went to high
- 18:29school here, you might see your friends, your classmates someone
- 18:32on there that, you know, and that's been a whole lot of fun
- 18:35to see. Yeah.
- 18:36Yeah. That's I love.
- 18:38Bearcats are the best. Yeah.
- 18:40And it's really, you know, it's really awesome for people to see
- 18:43those stories. I know, I certainly learned some
- 18:46things that I didn't know before.
- 18:47So, You for coming? Yeah, thank you.
- 18:51Have this conversation. Thanks for having me Melissa
- 18:54continuing along with our December giving season episode.
- 18:59I have another guest here today from the Scottsbluff booster
- 19:02club. I have the President Joe
- 19:04weinman. Hi Joe.
- 19:06Hi. Thanks for having me.
- 19:07We're glad to have you. This is a great opportunity.
- 19:11I think a lot, what was? Every school district or every
- 19:15high school that's out, there has a booster club, but I don't
- 19:18know if All of our parents or all of our students know what
- 19:22the booster club does. Can you tell me a little bit
- 19:24about what the booster club does?
- 19:26Sure the overall goal for the booster club is really just to
- 19:30support all of the activities at the school level.
- 19:34We support all NSA activities. A lot of people typically think
- 19:38that's just Athletics. We go much more beyond that as
- 19:42well. We help with speech.
- 19:43Play production journalism, cheer, drill team show choir.
- 19:48So it's a A wide variety of activities that the student body
- 19:51is engaged in, okay. And to clarify that a little
- 19:55bit, which I think it's great that you support all the things
- 19:58beyond the NSA sports, but when you say support, you mean a few
- 20:02different things and one of them is financial support, right?
- 20:05Yes. Each activity can put in a
- 20:09financial request donation. For the booster club to
- 20:12consider, we've donated uniforms before we've helped with
- 20:17basketball hoops, different things like that.
- 20:19Districts that whatever funds they need then we look at and
- 20:22see how we can help support them.
- 20:24Yeah and I think we're at a time right now where everything is
- 20:27expensive but we have really fabulous activities will Sports
- 20:32a non-sports at Scottsville high school and its really great that
- 20:37we're able to have a mechanism to provide our students who
- 20:41participate in activities with the things that they need.
- 20:45Yes, I think the activities provided at the High cool level
- 20:49definitely help with students becoming more well-rounded.
- 20:53Okay? And so the booster club, you are
- 20:56your volunteer organization, right?
- 20:58Yes, it's a volunteer organization.
- 21:00Anyone can join and participate in the organization, we meet
- 21:05once a month. It's the third Thursday at 7.
- 21:08A.m. at the Scottsbluff High School and anyone is welcome to
- 21:11attend. And that's where we conduct our
- 21:13meetings review, financials and donations and things like that,
- 21:18okay? So, if you don't have to have a
- 21:22student in high school in order to participate or be a member,
- 21:26right? Nope.
- 21:27You can have a kid in the elementary school level.
- 21:30We will take any help that we can get as much appreciated.
- 21:33Oh, well, that's probably good for me because my have all
- 21:35graduated and left me but yeah, good to know how if I want to
- 21:41support the booster club has talked a little bit about how
- 21:44you're funded if I want to support the booster club is an
- 21:47individual. How can I do?
- 21:49That as an individual, I would highly recommend, we have
- 21:51membership opportunities and those levels range from just a
- 21:55twenty five dollar donation to five hundred dollars and above
- 21:59currently right now you can just drop a check off at the high
- 22:02school and and notate that to the booster club and it will get
- 22:04to us. And then that just shows your
- 22:07support, we will be recognizing those membership levels on our
- 22:11score boards throughout basketball games, football games
- 22:14and things like that. So, if you want to make a
- 22:16financial donation, you can do that.
- 22:18We're looking to If we streamline that in the near
- 22:21future so that maybe you can just go through some type of
- 22:24website to make a payment. We trying to make that process
- 22:26easy, but that's one simple way as an individual to donate,
- 22:30okay? And what if I, what if I have a
- 22:32business or what if I were going to local employer, that would
- 22:37like to get more involved in sponsoring or supporting
- 22:40activities? Sure, what I would recommend is
- 22:43we have a scoreboard opportunity for advertisements for really at
- 22:48our kind of Bleah. Higher level.
- 22:50There's two different levels. There's an anchor sponsor, and
- 22:53Premier sponsor. They come with different types
- 22:55of membership packages. It's a five-year agreement.
- 22:58You probably have seen several of our sponsors.
- 23:01If you've attended a basketball game, a football game at the
- 23:04softball fields and that has been a huge support for us.
- 23:07We've really tried to streamline that about five, six years ago
- 23:11to stop having to ask for date Nations every single year and
- 23:14just have one large donation. And then we allocate that money
- 23:17over the years Well, that's really great.
- 23:20The first thing I can't believe, you know this, but the
- 23:24scoreboards were funded entirely by the booster club.
- 23:28The scoreboards are fantastic, you know, for those of you out
- 23:31there, if you haven't been to a game in the last few years, we
- 23:34have brand-new scoreboards at football fields at softball
- 23:39fields, and in the main gym. And, you know, they're really
- 23:43great. And it's also provided some
- 23:45student opportunity because we have our Communications Arts,
- 23:49And Technology Academy, the high school, that does a lot of the
- 23:54creative work and a lot of the production were to create Those
- 23:59ads and kind of make those things possible.
- 24:01So I guess, you know, we should be saying thank you because
- 24:04we're very fortunate to have those.
- 24:06Those are a really great opportunity.
- 24:08Yes. It's been really fun to work
- 24:09with them and to see their creative outlet and what they
- 24:12can do and partner with us. And it's been a great experience
- 24:15for us. Okay.
- 24:17And I know there's another thing.
- 24:19That you guys also offer I was I was running the wrestling dual
- 24:24the other day and I was in the low scoring and I heard Mr.
- 24:28Hawksworth on the microphone he the school stores open.
- 24:31If you want to go, you know, it's close to Christmas.
- 24:33If you want to go by your Bearcat spirit wear and I was
- 24:35jealous because I couldn't just leave the scoring table and, you
- 24:39know, go pick myself up a pole over.
- 24:41So, tell me about the spirit where, yes, it's a great
- 24:44opportunity to show school spirit and purchase stuff.
- 24:48We open the School store. Quite as much as we can, we've
- 24:51been at football games, we actually sold out of.
- 24:53Almost all of our merchandise. I think by the second football
- 24:56game home game of the year and it's just been a great
- 25:00fundraiser, and also just a great way to support.
- 25:03We got a new line coming in. We've got some I think Puma
- 25:06where some different things coming in.
- 25:08Hopefully, our vendors come through, but we put a lot of
- 25:11announcements on our Facebook page to let people know when the
- 25:13school store will be open. We're also partnering with Deca
- 25:17who will be helping us with regular school store.
- 25:19H, that's wonderful. So people kind of like in an
- 25:22idea of what kind of inventory you have, Facebook is may be the
- 25:27place to go for that. Yes, anytime we get new
- 25:29merchandise, and we like to put that on our Facebook page, to
- 25:32kind of let people know. And people can place orders
- 25:34right there as well. And then we'll set up a time to
- 25:38get that distributed. Yep.
- 25:39And for those of you who don't follow that that Scottsbluff
- 25:42booster club on Facebook. So go out and give that a
- 25:44follow. You can see all the great new
- 25:47gear that comes in. And I think the best part of
- 25:50this is that not only do, can you get your spirit wear?
- 25:54But the proceeds of it go right back to our activities.
- 25:57Yes, it's a great thing. So with I also am I want to get
- 26:03involved with the booster club but maybe I don't have a lot in
- 26:07the means in the way of donating our volunteer or are there other
- 26:12ways I can get involved. Yes.
- 26:14We definitely need lots of volunteers.
- 26:16You can attend our monthly meetings and participate in some
- 26:19You're making processes but one of our big fundraisers.
- 26:22Every year is our putt for the Paw Golf Tournament.
- 26:24And we need a lot of volunteers to make that tournament a
- 26:27success. So if that's something or you
- 26:29have more time in the summer and can help with either beforehand
- 26:33on the planning stages or even just that day helping with, you
- 26:36know, at the scoreboard or whatever we were doing that is
- 26:40much appreciated. You can always contact us and
- 26:43let us know what you'd like to help with and we can make sure
- 26:46that we get in contact with you so that I believe that ball
- 26:49tournament that's about the third week in July correct.
- 26:53We've changed a few dates. But yeah, that's that's when
- 26:55been working for us primarily. So we hope to secure that same
- 26:59date every year. Yeah, that's a really great
- 27:00summer. You know, opportunity, it's not
- 27:03quite busy for back-to-school time yet, that, you know, and
- 27:06another way that people can support is by golfing by being a
- 27:10participant in the tournament as well.
- 27:13Yeah. So it's a great time to enjoy
- 27:15some golf and support the booster club.
- 27:17At the same time. We've had a good turnout, the
- 27:19Several years and hope that Trend continues.
- 27:22Well, that's great. It's really exciting to see all
- 27:26of the different sorts of ways that the booster club supports
- 27:30activities in our schools and also provides, you know, way for
- 27:35ways, for fans, for parents, for people even, you know, alumni to
- 27:40be able to get engaged. So, I'm really glad that you had
- 27:43the opportunity to join this today.
- 27:46If someone wants to make a donation, And to the booster
- 27:50club, what's the best way to do? So at this time at this time, I
- 27:52would recommend either mailing it to the Scottsbluff High
- 27:55School, or dropping a check off. That would go to the activities
- 27:58office, correct? Yes.
- 27:59Okay, well, there you have it, folks.
- 28:02This will conclude our giving season episode, and we hope
- 28:07everyone has a wonderful winter break.
- 28:09And we will see you back next month.
- 28:12Thanks for having me. Thank you.
