- 0:20All right, everybody, you're listening to Eagles postgame analysis here at the Philadelphia
- 0:24Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the
- 0:29world, over ten and a half years strong. Again, Week sixteen of
- 0:33this Philadelphia Eagles two thousand and twenty three twenty twenty four season is now in
- 0:38the books. They beat the New York Giants by a score of thirty three
- 0:41to twenty five at the Link in Philadelphia. This Eagles team is now eleven
- 0:46and four on the season, first place in the NFC East. As we
- 0:51are recording this, I am Jeff Warren. I'm here with my good buddy
- 0:55Matt Rogers from the honorable mentioned podcast. You can listen on Apple Podcasts.
- 0:59That's where I listen to other podcasting platforms as well, at Politidope on threads.
- 1:06That's where I'm at as well. Yes, mister Jeff Warren, I'm
- 1:08on threads as well. The podcast is again the honorable mentioned podcast where you
- 1:14can hear Matt and all this great guests. So Matt, buddy, thanks
- 1:18so much for filling in for the guys. And my gosh, this Eagles
- 1:19team, they were trying to lose this game. Weren't they, buddy.
- 1:23Uh, you know, I think overall, I really enjoyed. You know,
- 1:27I didn't expect to be saying this. I really have enjoyed watching Matt
- 1:32Patricia call this defense. It's just when when the chips are at a certain
- 1:37point and I again, these are all words I can't believe I'm saying.
- 1:41But like you know, I wish he would bring out the Jim Schwartz just
- 1:45pick a fence defense. Yes, just back the guys up. I mean,
- 1:49there was no reason that they should have allowed. Oh my gosh,
- 1:53whoever read blanket Ship gave up that deep shot at the end of the game
- 1:57too. There was no good reason for that. And that's same kind of
- 2:00thing that we had last last week. It was there was Darius Slayton,
- 2:05that wasn't it. I know Slayton got one deep shot in this game.
- 2:08Okay, it was absurd. Yes, whoever, don't I don't know what
- 2:15we're doing. And in Blankenship, the technique on that was just awful.
- 2:20It was terrible. I mean, he just he took a bad angle on
- 2:23it and everything. So he asked me how I'm doing the birds one?
- 2:27Yes, Tom doing? Yes. I came on I came on the honorable
- 2:30mentioned podcast with you this past week and I said, you know what,
- 2:36I'm not one hundred sure that this Eagles team is going to pull out a
- 2:39victory. And I said that thinking, I don't know if they really have
- 2:44been able to clean up everything that they've been able to clean up. And
- 2:46I want to preface everything that I'm going to be saying in this podcast with
- 2:51the fact that this New York Giants team is not a good football team.
- 2:54And we all know that, folks. They are terrible. They have a
- 2:59ton of injury on both sides of the ball, and they are just not
- 3:02a good football team. But this Eagles team kept this Giants team in the
- 3:09game. You had two different quarterbacks playing for the New York Giants. Tommy
- 3:14DeVito. After sixteen pass attempts, he went nine of sixteen for fifty five
- 3:19yards. He was benched. Tyrod Taylor came in kind of took things over
- 3:23a little bit. I guess you would say some better stats seven of sixteen
- 3:27for one hundred and thirty three yards, eight point three yards per attempt to
- 3:30touch down, an interception, and a rating of sixty eight. But you
- 3:35know, at the end of the day, the Eagles were just kind of
- 3:38making some decisions that were just questionable. And again, this is an Eagles
- 3:42team that needs to clean up things on both the offensive and defensive sides of
- 3:46the ball, Matt and this game was by no means a gimme when we
- 3:50look like we look at these next two weeks, these next two weeks don't
- 3:53seem to be gimme games either, even though we feel like it should be
- 3:57here. You know, a number of points in the game, again,
- 4:00they were just trying to beat themselves offensively and defensively. It's amazing. I
- 4:09will say that I've been I was encouraged that when the Chips were down that
- 4:14Brian Johnson and Nick Sirianni didn't try to get cute. They just pounded the
- 4:18damn ball. Yes, just at the end, I think everybody can just
- 4:23get past it because they got to win. If it went the other way,
- 4:28and even Jalen throws a touchdown, I think you would have had a
- 4:30lot of people with a lot more heartburn because it just feels like from the
- 4:36top down. And we heard about this, and we talked about this earlier
- 4:40in the week. Jeff on the honorable mention podcast. We're talking about from
- 4:44the top down, from Lorie to Roseman to the coaches, and you know
- 4:48you had Doug Peterson who had to deal with that from top down saying,
- 4:53hey, we know that the fan base wants to run the ball, and
- 4:57sometimes it makes the most sense to run the ball, but we I reholistically
- 5:00want to be a team that throws the football well. Yes, and we
- 5:03are a team that throws the football well, but when it comes down to
- 5:08it, you've got to sault away the clock and they did that today.
- 5:12So I am encouraged by that. Yeah, we want to talk about things
- 5:15that were encouraged about this Eagles team here, Matt. Something that I am
- 5:19encouraged about, and like I know, a lot of Eagles Nation is probably
- 5:23going to be like, oh my gosh, we almost lost to the New
- 5:25York Giants, one of the worst teams in the NFL. But I think
- 5:28it's important to highlight some of the positive things as well. And one thing
- 5:31that I really want to highlight, and I think it's important as this team
- 5:35is moving forward and they're trying to clean up those things, especially from an
- 5:40offensive standpoint, is that we saw a bit of explosiveness coming from the Eagles
- 5:45offense in this game. I mean they got Devonte Smith matched up solo.
- 5:48I believe he was in the slot in the second quarter on that awesome touchdown.
- 5:54The offense really had been lacking explosive plays, especially over the past three
- 5:59to four games, but they got a few explosive plays in this game.
- 6:02Again, that thirty six yard touchdown catch from Jalen Hurts to Davonte Smith.
- 6:08The exploded the explosive plays that we have been missing we kind of got to
- 6:12see tonight. It was good that we got to see it against the New
- 6:14York Giants team again that is terrible, however we saw it. Hopefully that
- 6:17can keep some momentum going with this offense. Well, and the New York
- 6:24Jets are also a terrible football team and they did not get explosive plays against
- 6:28them. And yeah, the Giants, you know, there's that's too that
- 6:31you know, with the Eagles lost to the Jets weeks ago. Yeah,
- 6:35yeah, yes, So I'm saying, you know, we've seen this team
- 6:41play other terrible football teams and offense futter right, and so it's good.
- 6:46It's good at the at the end of the day that when this offense needed
- 6:51a third down play they were able to connect on it. Now, I
- 6:55don't exactly know what the goal was on the who Leo Jones screen pass.
- 7:01Yes, but cool, we won, so I guess we'll just keep moving
- 7:05exactly, We'll keep moving forward to look something else that I want. I
- 7:11wanted to. I really want to get into Jalen Hurts here with you too,
- 7:13because I think there was a tale of different Jalen Hurts that we saw
- 7:17within this game. I mean, let's first talk about that bad snap by
- 7:20Jason Kelcey at the end of the first quarter. Jalen Hurts was actually able
- 7:25to kind of see the field, see where Grant Calcatara was. It was
- 7:28able to complete an amazing pass off a broken play. What an amazing play.
- 7:32But then we moved to the the the third quarter where Hurts has that
- 7:39just that it was just it was not that as great of a throw.
- 7:42Dallas Goddard slides, It's an interception. It's a pick six at the end.
- 7:46And I felt like so many times throughout this game too, when Hurts
- 7:51is getting pressured outside the pocket, he just can't seem to make an actual
- 7:56passing play, just having to get rid of the ball. I'm happy he's
- 7:58getting rid of the ball instead of turning it over. However, there is
- 8:01an inconsistency and I said, like I said, like a tale of different
- 8:05Jalen Hurts throughout this game here seeming like he's still kind of trying to find
- 8:11himself in a way. Yes, given these past few weeks. But what
- 8:13are your thoughts here? I think I think one, uh, you know,
- 8:20and this isn't an excuse. I'm not coming on here after a loss
- 8:22or whatever, a bad performance and making excuses. I think the reality is
- 8:28when the season is over, hopefully you know, the Eagles are going to
- 8:31Las Vegas for the Super Bowl and we'll be talking about it after Jalen is
- 8:35hoisting the Lombardi and the Super Bowl MVP. But the reality is we'll find
- 8:39out at the end of this year just how hurt Jalen Hurts has been all
- 8:43season. So that's one thing he is injured. Two, I think that
- 8:48there's something to which you were just getting out a second ago, is that
- 8:52Jalen isn't trusting yet what he's seeing with the offense. It's it's especially because
- 9:00the Eagles never play their guys in the preseason. The first time that they're
- 9:05seeing anything live is week one, and I think that I think that there's
- 9:11something to be said that, you know Jalen. Even though Brian Johnson and
- 9:16Jalen Hurts are comfortable with each other, they know each other personally. I
- 9:20don't think that the offense that's being called for Jalen, he's not right now.
- 9:24Basically, you know, put the VR headset on or put a blindfold
- 9:30on and say, God, it's going to be here. Smith's here,
- 9:35a J's here, He's going. He's kind of trending back in that direction
- 9:39of needing to see it then throw it. Sdiken last year had Jalen really
- 9:46able to just you know, the read is now and the ball's coming out
- 9:50and it's going here. Now, there are some plays where you're seeing that
- 9:54more so from Jalen, and hopefully in future weeks we will see more of
- 9:56it. But I do I do think that Jalen is not quite comfortable yet
- 10:01with what he's seeing. I think that makes sense. I think it makes
- 10:05sense from at least the initial eye test in this game. Look, folks,
- 10:11this was a rebound game that needed to happen for this Philadelphia Eagles team
- 10:15that has lost three and especially last week's heartbreaker against the Seattle Seahawks. They
- 10:20needed this game to get back, and we talked about sports psychology, you
- 10:24know, the mental aspect of this game of football, especially toward the latter
- 10:28part of the season. They needed this game and they needed some of these
- 10:31stats too. I think when they look at whether it's they're on their screens,
- 10:35whether or not they're looking on paper and studying film and looking at some
- 10:41of these stats. They needed to see that they had twenty eight first downs
- 10:43to the Giants fourteen first downs. Total plays in this game, the Eagles
- 10:48had seventy four to the Giants fifty nine total yards per play. Eagles had
- 10:54six point three yards per play to the Giants four point nine yards per play.
- 11:00In terms of like total yards in this game, four hundred and sixty
- 11:03five total yards by this Eagles team against a floundering Giants team that is terrible.
- 11:09Again by two hundred and ninety two yards. That's what the Giants put
- 11:13up on this Eagles defense. And I think third down is really important for
- 11:16this Philadelphia Eagles team. They went eight of fifteen third down efficiency was really
- 11:20important. They were perfect on fourth down. They were two for two.
- 11:24The Giants were just terrible throughout the game, and I think from a stat
- 11:28sheet perspective, we can actually look at it, and I hope these players
- 11:31look at it and it gives them from a sports psychology perspective, Matt,
- 11:35you know, a different type of path for them to think how their fortunes
- 11:39can be moving forward with the Cardinals and again playing the Giants the last game
- 11:43of the season. I do think the stats are kind of important this week
- 11:46here, man. I. Yeah, I And also for the for the
- 11:54casual fan or the fan who watched, you know, half of the game
- 11:58but was stepping out to talk cigarette or whatever with their friends. You know,
- 12:03you're watching the score, and the score doesn't tell how much the Eagles
- 12:07dominated this game, right, I mean you have the the Ola Media Zechias
- 12:13forced fumble. Uh good God, We'll get there. Yes, sweet Jesus,
- 12:22that's one of those that that that's one of those. It's a it's
- 12:26a momentum killer, and it gave the other team points. And so if
- 12:30they can clean those things up, even in spite of the horrible coverage,
- 12:35uh in the slot from from Red Blanket Chip on that one play that totally
- 12:39gets torched in the situation where you know they have to score. I just
- 12:43don't understand these the r dbs right now. There's just a misunderstanding of downing
- 12:50distance. There are certain times, like like last week with Smith and Jigbu,
- 12:56the one catch you cannot allow him to hit is the one for the
- 13:01touchdown running right past you, Bradbury, I mean, give up whatever.
- 13:05They have to move the ball. And here the same thing happened again.
- 13:09A guy lining up in the slot and gets matched up one on one.
- 13:15Okay, give it up, give up the shorter things. I feel like
- 13:20this is like one of those staple things within the organization is that we try
- 13:26to go for a big plays on offense and we don't give up the big
- 13:28plays. I don't know what's happening here. In the last couple weeks in
- 13:33the fourth quarter went on obvious shot plays from the other team. Yeah,
- 13:39this is this is something for Maddy p to get into them and make them
- 13:43realize you were playing Kyrod Taylor this week exactly exactly. This is not Brock
- 13:50exactly. This is not Brad Purdy at all. And I'll tell you right
- 13:54now, I'm glad you mentioned I'm glad you mentioned James Bradberry. You and
- 13:58I've talked about him a number of times throughout the course of this season,
- 14:01and that throw from Tyrod Taylor to Darren Waller, I believe it was a
- 14:05twenty yarder and Brad Barry was just cooked on the play. Again consistently,
- 14:11It's like, my gosh, I mean, something is going to need to
- 14:16happen with him, maybe like maybe like Hurts quite frankly, maybe he is
- 14:22injured in some ways, having a nagging injury that we just don't know about.
- 14:26And that is me trying to make an excuse for him at this point.
- 14:30I am trying my hardest to make an excuse and I don't think that's
- 14:33the case. But really we're seeing him continuing to get cooked. So I
- 14:39wanted to bounce something off of you, you know, before we go to
- 14:41our break and before we get into our grades. Matt wanted to get into
- 14:46the frustrating nature of AJ Brown every now and then that we see when that
- 14:52connection between he and Jalen Hurts is not there. We saw it yet again
- 14:56in this game. I mean AJ Brown was targeted eleven times. He came
- 15:00down with six balls for eighty yards average. Thirteen point three point yards of
- 15:03the thirteen point three yards per reception, So in terms of getting that volume,
- 15:09it didn't necessarily happen early in the game. A lot of those targets
- 15:13came during the second half. But I'm wondering what has happened with this chemistry.
- 15:20I can't from an eye test, I can't necessarily seem to see what
- 15:24has happened because it doesn't seem like AJ Brown is double teamed on every single
- 15:28play out there where Jalen Hurts is kind of staying away from him, or
- 15:31you know, Jalen Hurts every now and again is throwing the worm burners,
- 15:35you know, the kind of Donadan McNab used to throw. Like he's throwing
- 15:39those worm burners to AJ Brown and Jay's frustrated visibly. What is your thought
- 15:45on what has happened in terms of their chemistry as we're here, like week
- 15:50sixteen of this season. I do got so one that is more in his
- 15:56defense and another one that is not so much in his defense. Number one,
- 16:03I think he's just flat out dropping passes. I mean he is flat
- 16:07The ball is hitting AJ Brown in stride in his hands, He's not coming
- 16:12down with it. You can't make excuses for it. That guy is supposed
- 16:17to be a superstar, Jamar Chase, Stefan Diggs. You know, justin
- 16:21Jefferson, you put him in that conversation and I don't you know, even
- 16:25with all these drop passes, he has to be in that conversation. But
- 16:29also I think that the scheme that what they're doing to try to get him
- 16:34the ball. There are times when they're lining up and I know exactly what
- 16:41how they're going to try to get aj Brown the ball. They run a
- 16:44three yard in and then try to have the slot guy curl out, and
- 16:49so the other teams are watching that. There was one of those today that
- 16:52almost got picked off, and it's because basically earlier in the season, you
- 16:59know, other team teams weren't feed in on yeah, he's gonna run this
- 17:03in. He's gonna run a slant. It's a lot of inbreaking stuff to
- 17:07Aj Brown, and linebackers and safeties are just sniffing it out. We've got
- 17:11they've got to be better about. You know, there's a there's too much
- 17:15pride going on. And we talked about this on Honorable Mentions. People should
- 17:18go and listen to that because it's it's still pressing information. You know,
- 17:22there's too much hero ball. There's too much. Yes, we're just better
- 17:26than you and we're gonna get our guy the ball and there's nothing you can
- 17:30do about it. Okay, you guys can do that, But that doesn't
- 17:34have to be every single time. Why can't we set aj Brown up with
- 17:37a layup? Why does he have to go and dunk on three people every
- 17:41time he puts the ball through the path. Yeah, exactly, exactly,
- 17:45make very good points. Yeah, folks, go back and listen to the
- 17:48Honorable Mention podcast in that feed from this past week, especially my appearance.
- 17:55You know, there was a lot of great conversations specifically about that. So
- 18:00as we're kind of closing up the first half of this this postgame show here,
- 18:03Matt, do you have anything else in terms of themes that you want
- 18:07to discuss with this before we get to our grading by unit and then the
- 18:11coaches. Yeah, just a heads up. I would expect if I'm the
- 18:17Eagles fan, I'd be expecting to bring my number twenty nine jerseys out.
- 18:21I expect to see Avonte Maddis back on the field. They need them,
- 18:25they need him. Bradley Roby not getting it done out there, folks,
- 18:27not getting it done even against the New York Giants. Very good, Matt,
- 18:30very good. All right, folks again, talking to Matt Rogers from
- 18:33the Honorable mentioned podcast over on threads at Politidope. What's the Honorable Mention thread
- 18:41on our thread that they handle on threads there, Matt, It's Honorable Mention
- 18:47Underscore podcast. There you go. All right, folks, we are going
- 18:49to take a quick break. We will be back in just a bit.
- 18:52We're going to get into our grades. Stick with us, all right,
- 18:56We are back and again talking to Matt Rodgers from the honor Mention Podcast.
- 19:00I listen on Apple Podcasts and they're on every other podcast streaming platform as well.
- 19:06And Matt, let's get into these grades here, buddy. The quarterback
- 19:10position. I am going to be giving Jalen Hurts this week a very up
- 19:12and down game from him. I'm going to be giving him a B minus.
- 19:17He went twenty four to thirty eight. Yeah, same great, twenty
- 19:21four to thirty eight, three hundred and one yards, seven point nine yards
- 19:23per attempt, one touchdown, one interception. He had a rating of eighty
- 19:27five point five B minus. I think it's fair for this game. Again,
- 19:30I said it was up and down for him. We both saw this.
- 19:33He has some great plays, he had some not so great plays for
- 19:37sure, But I think B minus is a fair grade. Yeah, I
- 19:41think. And I'm grading Jalen Hurts on the scale of best player in the
- 19:45league scale. I'm not expecting him to be. You know, if Jeff
- 19:49Garcia came out there today and did what Jalen Hurts did, and we would
- 19:53say it as an a game. But we know who Jalen Hurts is.
- 19:57He's got to be better in some key situation. But the third and twenty,
- 20:02if you guys are listening, or even if you think you watched it,
- 20:04go back and go and watch that throw on third and twenty while the
- 20:08Eagles were letting the game slip away. It was Giants eighteen, Eagles twenty.
- 20:14It was third and twenty and he connects with aj Brown along the sideline
- 20:17with a frozen rope. Yep, it's a green minus. But overall that
- 20:22throw was an excellent throw. Absolutely was all right. Let's move to the
- 20:26running backs. DeAndre Swift carried the ball twenty times for ninety two yards four
- 20:30point six yards per carry. And a touchdown. He probably would have had
- 20:36over one hundred yards for sure. If it wasn't for those plays at the
- 20:38end of the game where they were trying to run the clock out, he
- 20:41would have had over five yards rushing in this game. Kenneth Gainwell ran the
- 20:45ball for six ran the ball six times for forty one yards. He averaged
- 20:49six point eight yards per carry. In Boston, Scott, the New York
- 20:55Giants Killer only got in there once for three yards. I wish you've had
- 20:59a bit of there more just to see what he could have done. But
- 21:03overall, and including Jalen Hurts, is thirty four yards rushing, one hundred
- 21:06and seventy total yards rushing for this Eagles team, two touchdowns. I'm going
- 21:11to give the running backs in general this week because I think they did their
- 21:14jobs pretty darn well. I'm going to give them an A this week.
- 21:17What do you give them? I will give them an A And I also
- 21:21got a you know, I don't think Sue Opetta is very good left guard.
- 21:27The guy who's playing in there right now. It's just not giving them
- 21:32the opportunities. I think that they're trying to cover up. And you know,
- 21:36for other teams, you know, opposing enemy territory. People listen to
- 21:40this and pass it along. It's fine because they do this as a profession.
- 21:42Suellpetta is just not that good and so so those lanes are not being
- 21:48created. I can't wait for Dickerson to get back, but I do go.
- 21:53This was an excellent, excellent game from the Andre Swift. Didn't put
- 21:57the ball on the ground, especially that touchdown there at the end that should
- 22:03have been the game sealer to make it eighteen to twenty seven. Yep,
- 22:06should have been the game sealer, but they sealed it otherwise. Got to
- 22:11give him an eight though. All right, I agree with you for sure.
- 22:14All right, let's move to the receivers, wide receivers and tight ends.
- 22:18Aj Brown again eighty yards. On the day, DeVante Smith was seventy
- 22:22nine yards after being targeted five times and coming down with four balls. Dallas
- 22:26Goddard was targeted nine times. He came down with all seven balls for a
- 22:30total of seventy one yards. You'd like to see that. And of course
- 22:33Grant cal Katara catching two balls his only two balls that he caught of the
- 22:37season, for twenty one yards. And we had some other folks getting involved
- 22:41here and there, running backs and other wide receivers down the depth chart as
- 22:45well. I'm going to give the wide receivers this week a B plus.
- 22:48It could be around an A minus, but I think B plus. In
- 22:52general. I think they did what they were expected to do. Like I
- 22:56said earlier, that chemistry between Jalen Hurts and a J. Brown bit of
- 23:02an issue. But man, the one guy who I consistently love on this
- 23:06team, Davonte Smith. He is the steady eddie guy on this team.
- 23:11When he is throwing the ball, he will catch the ball at the catch
- 23:15point. I love watching him play. I'm gonna give this. I'm gonna
- 23:18give the wide receivers a B plus this week. What do you give him,
- 23:19buddy, I'm gonna go with a minus, and I'm gonna say a
- 23:25minus. Everything you said plus Nick Sirianni and Brian Johnson kept Ques Watkins on
- 23:30the sideline, Yes, Plus the ol Man Zikias pancake block where the guy
- 23:37you know, you know got blocked on on basically, Yeah, that was
- 23:45brutal. Yes, it was. It was absolutely brutal. All Right,
- 23:48let's move to the offensive line. Uh, you know you mentioned the offensive
- 23:52line when we were grading the running backs, and like you said, Sua
- 23:55Opeta not the greatest biding stretch of the imagination. There were there there were
- 24:00a decent amount of penalties in my opinion coming from Jordan my Lotta. Lane
- 24:03Johnson was was also uh penalized. Jason Kelsey as we mentioned earlier, with
- 24:10that horrendous snap, and thankfully Jalen Hurts was able to get the team out
- 24:14of a bad situation initially and converted a first down specifically on that play.
- 24:21I'm actually gonna give the offensive line this week a B minus based on based
- 24:25on some negative stuff we saw. What do you give him? I got
- 24:30it? And I'm you know, on the same row, I'm going a
- 24:32little further though, I'm going to see plus. Okay, I am starting
- 24:36to be I am starting And you know, there's a saying one of the
- 24:41people that I look up to in this in this industry is Shannon Sharp,
- 24:44and he has a great saying that I that I believe is truth. Don't
- 24:48accept anything in a win that you wouldn't have a loss. And what I
- 24:51will say say that to say, Jordan Mylotta's performance has been has been it's
- 25:00getting worse. Uh you see that, you see some of the holding calls
- 25:03because his technique is all off. He's kind of short arming stuff and not
- 25:08really you know, sprinting to get to the space and then cleaning the guys
- 25:12up. It's Jordan Mallott has got to clean it up now. I'm not
- 25:15going to be one of these people who call in a W I P and
- 25:18yell about the fact that they're doing a CD or whatever. And that's the
- 25:23reason. No, he's got to improve his technique. He's got to come
- 25:26into work with his lunch Paale. He's got to get better. He's too
- 25:30good for some of the stuff we're seeing from him, and so he's dragging
- 25:33the grade down. Opeta's dragging the grade down. Imagine if Jalen actually fumbles
- 25:40that snap that he gets to Calcatara, you know we're having maybe a totally
- 25:44different conversation. I gotta I gotta say C C plus today in this team,
- 25:49this offensive line, really that's the unit that has to take over the
- 25:53most over these next two games. We need them to show that they're that
- 25:59unit that we came on here and raved about week after week after week last
- 26:03year. Yes, absolutely, we need to see more from them, for
- 26:07sure. And on the flip side of things here, moving over the defense,
- 26:10we need to see more, in my opinion, from this defensive line,
- 26:14a defensive line that generated one sack in this game. There were six
- 26:19quarterback hits, four tackles for a loss, and I'm not seeing the pressure
- 26:26necessarily from Jalen Carter, from Milton Williams. Fletcher Cox had a really nice
- 26:32game. I gotta give him a lot of credit, and I just haven't
- 26:37necessary Jordan Davis. He had a decent game as well, but man,
- 26:41Josh Sweat has just not been produced. Absolutely, Holy cats. I was
- 26:45gonna say the same thing, Yeah, yeah, I mean Hassan Reddick,
- 26:49I mean he got four of the quarterback hits, like he's almost getting there.
- 26:55He's almost there. But I'm getting kind of tired of the almost.
- 27:00I want to see these sack numbers increasing over the course of these next couple
- 27:03of weeks as this team is going to be heading into the playoffs. So
- 27:07I'm actually going to be giving the defensive line a C plus this week.
- 27:10Where do you give him? Matt same and I am worried, you know,
- 27:15I'm glad you we're on the same page. I'm worried about Jordan Malatto
- 27:18on the offensive line, and I'm worried about Josh Sweat yep. I put
- 27:22up a I put up a quick little segment, and the listeners of Honorable
- 27:26Mention know that. Every now and then I do a little promo hype video
- 27:30where we cut up a part of the conversation and we had Adam Rosenberg and
- 27:36Dan Nubion and we were talking about how Josh Sweat has the guy at the
- 27:41Eagles game calling him sweaty J. And I even heard Sirianni calling him sweaty
- 27:45J. This was before the forty nine Ers game, and we were like,
- 27:48hey, you know, can we make some more plays before you have
- 27:52people calling you sweaty J. Yeah. He has now gone several weeks and
- 27:57is not He's not one of these impact players. I thought for a while
- 28:02that Montez Sweat, who's now a member of the Bears, he was the
- 28:07second best Sweat in the league pass rusher. I gotta say Montes is better
- 28:11than Josh right now. Josh is just not jumping off the screen. If
- 28:15I didn't know who he was and I was just watching number ninety four,
- 28:18I'm like Okay, he's a fine defensive end. That's not who Joshwtt was
- 28:23last year. Joshwett was an impact player, a difference maker. He has
- 28:27not been making a difference over the last several weeks. Very good, very
- 28:30good. Couldn't have said it better myself. Let's move to the linebacker position.
- 28:36Shaq Leonard doing a lot here in this game. Seven tackles, five
- 28:41total solo tackles, one sack, two tackles for a lost, one quarterback
- 28:47hit. Shack Leonard really was all over the field. A couple missteps here
- 28:51and there. Ben Van summer In I believe is his name, he was
- 28:56also in there. Six total tackles. They weren't necessarily a detriment in this
- 29:03game at all. And Shack Shaq Leonard actually had a pretty good game,
- 29:07you know, based on the eye test. So I'm actually gonna give him
- 29:08a B this week. What do you give the linebacker corps? I'm gonna
- 29:15say the C C plus range. I'm seeing, Zach, I'm seeing Shaq
- 29:19Leonard just go to the totally wrong gap on some of these running plays.
- 29:23There were there was a drive there in the second quarter where where Taquon they
- 29:29were just hammering it up up the gut with Saquon every time it was because
- 29:34Shaq Leonard was was was taking the wrong gap. He was in exactly the
- 29:38wrong gaps too many times. Now, he he did splash a couple of
- 29:42plays and made some good play plays, uh, Van Samarin. Great to
- 29:48see him, you know, get some opportunities off of the Special Teams unit
- 29:52to be you know, I don't believe him saying this, but welcome,
- 29:56you know, looking forward to welcoming back Nicholas Morrow at Cunningham next week.
- 30:02So hopefully we improved. But I was pretty excited to see uh Shaq Leonard.
- 30:07And then honestly, I got to say, he's not the same guy.
- 30:12Nobody should expect that he's gonna be that guy. He clearly has lost
- 30:18a ton of agility and a ton of top end speed. Now his brain
- 30:22is still working, but he's just not able to turn and stick with these
- 30:27people the way that he could before. Yeah, all right, let's move
- 30:32to the secondary before we get to the coaches this week, read Blank and
- 30:36Ship Keeley, Ringo, James Bradberry and uh, who am I missing here?
- 30:41Who am I missing here? Roby? Right? But Bradley Roby,
- 30:45and my gosh, the other safety yes, yes, Eli Rix for sure,
- 30:51and our other safety who did Kevin Byarn, Kevin Byrn so oh oh,
- 30:56Kevin Byron. And Brown yes Brown, Sidney Brown as well. Boo.
- 31:00By the way, this secondary unit, man, they just are floundering
- 31:03from time to time. You know, this groups that I'm going to be
- 31:07giving actually a C minus two this week because look, while there were only
- 31:12one hundred and eighty eight yards receiving by this giants receiving corps in general,
- 31:21when they needed to come up really big, yes, Killey Ringo had had
- 31:26the interception at to seal the game. But when they needed to come up
- 31:30big and make some stops, they weren't doing it. They were giving up
- 31:33some chunk plays in chunk yards again, Debo Samuel or Jamar Chase out there
- 31:38today exactly, yes, And Daniel Bellinger, you know, like the what
- 31:42the heck is going on here? You know, Wandale Robinson with his three
- 31:45catches for sixteen yards. Still they were able to contain Wandell Robinson, you
- 31:51know, thank goodness for that, exactly. So I'm going to give them
- 31:55a C plus this week. The secondary, what do you give them buddy.
- 32:00Yeah, if not for Keelee Ringo, I'm very high on Keey Ringo.
- 32:05I think, I think, honestly, James Bradberry has had a good
- 32:08career. Uh, he was a he was a Pro Bowl player last season.
- 32:13I've said this, and I'll beat the drum again. James Bradbury to
- 32:17safety, let Rix and Ringo and Avonte Max in the slot. You got,
- 32:24you got Robi to play don for you. You'll have slay in a
- 32:29couple of weeks. Let's just let Bradbury get his feet wet. He cannot
- 32:34cover these fast outside receivers. He's done. He's cooked, and and and
- 32:39at the parade, let him have a Kelsey moment and say, you know,
- 32:45people said that I was cooked, and I'll and I'll stand ten toes
- 32:47down. He looks cooked. He cannot stay, uh, you know,
- 32:52step for step with these fast wide receivers. And again I did not see
- 32:57Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson or any of the those guys out there today.
- 33:00I saw him getting cooked by just guys. Yes, honestly, it's a
- 33:05problem. It's gonna be a problem perhaps in the playoffs for sure. So
- 33:08all right, let's move over the coaching Special teams here. Look, you've
- 33:12got a special teams unit in the punt the punt unit and punt return unit.
- 33:16Holy cow, fantastic, especially the returner Britton Covey with an incredible first
- 33:22punt return of the game that went for fifty four yards. He did bobble
- 33:25the ball in the second quarter, could have given it up, but he
- 33:29recovered well. He had another great play where the ball bounced. He just
- 33:32aggressively ran to that ball and made sure that he had another twelve to fifteen
- 33:37yards off of that play. Special teams gets an a plot. I'm sorry.
- 33:42The punt return units get us an a plus from me. Now,
- 33:45the kick returns were atrocious. A holding on Eli Rex. Yeah. On
- 33:51the kick return of the first quarter, after gain Well had a decent return,
- 33:53it was brought back. That's on Elirix. And then, as you
- 33:55mentioned earlier, somehow Boston Scott and Olamadi's a chaus. They run into each
- 34:01other to start the third quarter, Boston Scott fumble that given the Giants the
- 34:06ball I think at the Eagles fourteen yard line. Braid Man, his punts
- 34:10this season have been pretty darn good. He's been averaging forty three point six
- 34:15net punt net punts that that's his average, sixth best in the NFL.
- 34:21In this particular game, he averaged fifty four yards per punt on two punts.
- 34:27Braidon Man is the punter for the Eagles in the future. I gotta
- 34:30tell you, if it wasn't if it wasn't for the kick returns being atrocious
- 34:34and some of the penalties there, Matt, they would have had an A
- 34:37plus from me. But they're actually gonna get a B plus this week.
- 34:39What do you give special teams? Yeah, I'm with you. I think
- 34:46you know going good thing that they did not you know that didn't turn into
- 34:52a fumble six, Yes, at least it was just a fumble. Yep.
- 34:57I'm really it's so frustrated that they really can't. I don't think that
- 35:02they care about kick return anymore. It's weird to say that, but I
- 35:07don't think they. So. If we don't care, why can't we just
- 35:12fair catch it? Just send the guy back there, Just a fair catchule
- 35:15to start on the twenty five every time, yes, exactause we can't do
- 35:20what we're doing. I'm holding my breath every time we're returning the kicks just
- 35:24to get to the twenty two, yes, or just to get to the
- 35:27twenty seven. It's like, look, too much stress, folkses, Let's
- 35:30just take it in twenty five, go seventy five yards every time. Cool
- 35:34Jayleen can do it. Yep, all right, Let's move to the defensive
- 35:37side of things. As we're running out of time here, Matt, I
- 35:39am going to give Matt Patricia Sean decide the defensive coaching in this game of
- 35:45B minus. I mean it could be around a C plus as well,
- 35:50just again, a lot of ups and downs throughout this game that we talked
- 35:52about on this postgame show. I'm going to give him a C plus.
- 35:55What do you give them? I give him a little higher than that.
- 36:02Ye maybe seven points or Jalen, Yeah, because seven of those are from
- 36:07from the from the defense, from the offense given up that that that pick
- 36:12six and then there. But they were put in a terrible spot by the
- 36:15special team. So you know, another few points there we could be talking
- 36:21about, you know, more so the masterpiece, uh, you know,
- 36:24keeping them into the mid to low teams. I've been actually encouraged by by
- 36:29Patricia. I'll go with a beam, but he really has to clean this
- 36:34up in late game situations when the game is over and they have to score,
- 36:37Folks, can we just play six, just play cover four? Yes,
- 36:40nobody behind us? And this is how it works, guys. Is
- 36:44nobody played Madden before? I mean, I hate to just shout out Madden
- 36:47on the sports podcast, but seriously, it teaches a lot of important lessons.
- 36:52You just don't let the guy behind you. It's a numbers game,
- 36:55it's a time just let the clock tick. They the ones with onus on
- 37:00them, They've got to get into the end zone. Absolutely, all right,
- 37:02Nick Sirianni. Brian Johnson the offensive coaching this week. I'm going to
- 37:07give him a straight up be what do you give them, buddy? I
- 37:08think to get this team up off the mat this week, I got I'll
- 37:13get I'll give them an A plus. The energy in the building, I
- 37:17think there's a lot to be said. Even if you're you're knocking out somebody
- 37:22who shouldn't even be in the ring with you. Yeah, it does take
- 37:24something if you were just getting up off the mat a couple of times.
- 37:29And I do got to say this team, this team could have been headed
- 37:32in a really bad direction. If this team was ten and five. People
- 37:37would be right in their obituary right now and they're not so cheers to them.
- 37:42Good point. I'll go ahead and i'll give them. I'll mix that.
- 37:46I'll give that a B plus. Let's say, right plus sounds good?
- 37:50All right, folks, that's going to do it for us. Here
- 37:52Week sixteen of this Eagles twenty twenty three twenty twenty four season now in the
- 37:57books. They beat the New York Giants by a score thirty three to twenty
- 37:59five. Our friend Matt Rogers, thank you so much, buddy, for
- 38:02joining us from the honorable mentioned podcast. Again. Listen on whatever podcast platform
- 38:07you're listening to us on, and you're gonna enjoy what the what Matt's talking
- 38:12about, the conversations he has. Matt, Thank you so much, buddy.
- 38:15Looking forward to talking to you down the road, my friend. All
- 38:17right, folks, that's gonna do it for us. You all take care.
- 38:21We'll catch you next time.
