- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo, I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Hey, Luc, episode two hundred and one. Can you believe we're still going? Lucas: I know. And it's all because of listeners like you. Shout-out to everyone who's been practicing with us since episode one. Luna: Speaking of practicing, last time we talked about ordering soda, and I totally used that at the café. So refreshing. Lucas: See, that's what we love to hear. Today we're going to do something a little different. We're going to talk about hobbies, but not the ones we did before. Luna: Oh, we did hobbies a while back, right? Reading and writing. Lucas: Exactly. So today we're going to focus on two fun ones: singing and dancing. Luna: Oh, I love both. I mean, I'm not great, but I love them. Lucas: Perfect. So let's start with the verb 'to sing'. In Swahili, to sing is 'kuimba'. And to say 'I sing' or 'I am singing', you say 'Ninaimba'. Luna: Ninaimba. Lucas: Good. 'Ninaimba'. Let's try it in a sentence. If someone asks 'Unapenda kuimba?' which means 'Do you like to sing?', you can answer 'Ninapenda kuimba'. Luna: So 'Unapenda kuimba?' is the question, and I say 'Ninapenda kuimba'. Lucas: That's it. Let's practice that question and answer together. Luna, ask me. Luna: Unapenda kuimba? Lucas: Ninapenda kuimba. Great. Now let's do the same for dancing. The verb is 'kucheza', to dance. So 'I dance' or 'I am dancing' is 'Ninacheza'. Luna: Ninacheza. Lucas: Good. And to ask 'Do you like to dance?' you say 'Unapenda kucheza?' Luna: Unapenda kucheza? Lucas: And if you love dancing, you say 'Ninapenda kucheza'. Luna: Ninapenda kucheza. Lucas: Let's do a little scene. Pretend we're at a party. Luna, you ask me if I like to dance. Luna: Unapenda kucheza? Lucas: Ninapenda kucheza. But I'm not so good. Luna: Oh, I doubt that. But okay. What about singing? Unapenda kuimba? Lucas: Ninapenda kuimba. But only in the shower. Luna: Ah, that's the best place. Lucas: Now let's switch it. Luna, you tell me about yourself. I'll ask you. Lucas: Luna, unapenda kuimba? Luna: Ninapenda kuimba. And also, ninapenda kucheza. Lucas: Wow, you're a star. Let's put it all together with our earlier hobby phrases. Remember 'Ninasoma'? Luna: Yes, that's 'I read'. Lucas: So now you can say 'Ninasoma, ninaimba, ninacheza'. Luna: Ninasoma, ninaimba, ninacheza. I'm a woman of many talents. Lucas: You are. And remember, these phrases are super useful when you're meeting new people. You can ask them 'Unapenda kuimba?' or 'Unapenda kucheza?'. Luna: So let's practice one more time. I'll ask you, Lucas: Unapenda kucheza? Lucas: Ninapenda kucheza. And I'll ask you: Unapenda kuimba? Luna: Ninapenda kuimba. Oh, this is fun. I could do this all day. Lucas: And that's the beauty. You can talk about your hobbies anywhere. At a party, at work, with new friends. It's a great conversation starter. Luna: Totally. And you know, this is such a small lesson but it makes a real difference. It's kind of like how a small monthly donation can make a real difference for a show like this. Lucas: That's a good point. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Swahili, and you've got a couple of dollars to spare, it genuinely helps us keep making these episodes ad-free. You can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, even a small amount goes a long way. We appreciate every one of you. Lucas: Now, let's get back to our hobbies. How would you say 'I like to dance and sing'? Luna: Ninapenda kucheza na kuimba. Lucas: Perfect. 'Na' means 'and'. So you can combine them. Ninapenda kucheza na kuimba. Luna: Ninapenda kucheza na kuimba. I love that. Lucas: So today we learned how to say 'I sing', 'I dance', 'Do you like to sing?', 'Do you like to dance?', and how to answer. Make sure to practice these in front of a mirror or with a friend. Luna: And don't forget to have fun with it. Even if you're not the best singer or dancer, Swahili is for everyone. Lucas: That's right. Thanks for joining us on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. We'll see you next time for another tiny lesson. Keep practicing! Luna: Kwaheri!
