- 0:14[SPEAKER_01]: Those mafia, what's going on?
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome into your Tuesday, September second.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, John's getting down.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: I love it Tuesday, September second version of first and five.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: I am Dave Myers and that is John Helmkamp.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: We are here to break down bills and ravens as you saw in the title of the thumbnail.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: John, how was your long holiday weekend, man?
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: You got some cows football and huh?
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, man.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was good.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: For those that know me, they know that I'm a massive college football nut nerd.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, draft is my baby.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: So finally, getting to see some of the top prospects and next year's draft on the field and how they perform is exciting.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: Man, lots of takeaways.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Arch Manning, still one-on-one of feet of players.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: That was a dud against Ohio State.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, man.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: I was so excited just to have
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: football and like highlights on the timeline all weekend and you know we're back into the rhythm we're here.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah I mean now we have football all day on the weekend so we have college Saturday and NFL and Sunday and then obviously NFL Monday too.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: So today we're gonna talk about a few different topics obviously the bulk and the mutant potatoes of the conversations gonna be the bill's ravens.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna I don't want to just have
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: an hour and a half long show about what the bills need to do on offense, what the bills need to do on defense, how do they stop this guy, how do they do that.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: I want to just cut into the meat and potatoes.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: Slice things down have a nice, you know, organic shorter conversation about, you know, what John thinks about the game, how I feel about the game, things like that.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get into that though, a familiar face, once again, three times a charm, a former Buffalo Bill is back in Gabe Davis, signed to the practice squad.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: This one took a little bit longer than I think a lot of people anticipated when he was here for his second visit, which was, I believe that was the beginning of last week.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of stuff was coming out that people were
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: concerned what that meant for guys like terrible shivers and things like that, the overall health of the wide receiver room.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: But obviously, as you see what Brandon Bean's done here, he's put Gabe Davis on the practice squad.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: The Jacksonville Jaguars are paying him, I believe, north of eleven million dollars to play for the Buffalo Bills this year.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: So that's kind of cool.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so John, to you, what does this mean?
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: Because obviously we had Jordan Phillips was the first domino.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: Then we had Jordan players the second domino.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: Now we have Gabe Davis.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: Are the bills building the NFL's greatest practice squad?
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: or his joke.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: How do you feel about Gabe Dave?
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: And we could talk about Jordan Poir and Jordan Phil's in a little bit, because we didn't really get to talk about that last week.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: So, what's your thoughts on Gabe Davis?
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: Is this something where he's practice squad going to be all year?
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: Is there a possibility to him to get down the fifty-three?
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: What's your thoughts?
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: No, I think that he's going to have a chance to make the fifty-three.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be debates at some point this season.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe sooner than later about whether or not it's he or Tyrell shivers that should be up.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's going to be a conversation that happens.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: Listen.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: two years ago in Buffalo was a seven hundred and forty six yards seven touchdown season before that eight hundred and thirty six and seven like he was basically good for seven touchdowns a year as a deep threat and no it wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination and a lot of bills fans wanted to move on from him as being the number two or number three option but now you're talking about him as the number six or number seven and another team is paying him and he has familiarity with the team and like there's
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there's anything to hate about this.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: I love that he's back in the building.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think that it says so much about Buffalo as a culture and as a community and as a team that you keep having these guys that leave Buffalo and they're just like, I just want to go back to Buffalo.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to go back and play for the bills and as a wider receiver wanting to play with Josh Allen is probably a pretty good thing.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: I get it from Gabe's perspective.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: I get it from the bills.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: Bring him back to the practice squad.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see how he does, how he recovers from the injury.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: If he looks like he's back to a hundred percent speed, if he looks like he's a potential difference maker that you rotate in when you need some some deep shots, then why not?
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: I do think that the debate is going to be there between he and Tyrell Shavers probably sooner and later, maybe in a few weeks.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I put on on Twitter earlier today.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: I was like,
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: Having Gabe Davis be your number two and number three is one thing.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: But having Gabe Davis be an option for four, five, or six is completely different.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the expectations aren't there, right?
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: The contract is not there.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: So the familiarity with Josh Allen is there.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, if somebody gets injured, obviously Curtis Samuel has been dinged up two seasons in a row.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: Key on Coleman had that injury last year.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: He looks to be okay.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Cleo Shakir got banged up at the Red and Blue Scrimmage.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: She's supposedly ready to go for a week one, but if there's something that he can't go, then maybe you want to elevate Gabe to be the sixth receiver.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: Throughout the season, this is a really nice insurance policy to have.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think that there's still some play left in Gabe Davis.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like what happened in Jacksonville.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: He had the injury.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: He was never really
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: thrown into that offensive system.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like they overspent to get them.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: The bills were never going to pay that.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I see a comment from Roy Collins coming in here.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: How healthy is Gabe Davis?
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, when he was in Buffalo for his second visit, McDermott touched on his visit in his presser and said that he did meet with medical.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm assuming that the bills would not have signed under the practice squad if he did not pass the physical.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: He had, I believe it was a knee injury last year, and Tom Amoscus.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, tournament is so he's a couple of months removed from being fully recovered from that from all accounts.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: So I think this this is something that we don't need to over react to it as as a bill's fan base.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: We don't need to just be like, oh, we're just going to keep bringing in these old guys.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they're bringing in a guy who has familiarity with Josh Allen.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: So that's going to help no matter what.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: And if the bill gets to the postseason and they need a fifth receiver, that's healthy.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe games put on the practice squad all year and he's healthy and he's good to go and the postseason.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see, but again, I wouldn't over react to it.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: If Gabe Davis is fighting for a roster spot, that's fine.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: He's not the number two, three target anymore.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: So, all right, that's it.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: Move on.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to give you the, the real pressing question first.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: Did the bills do enough on the defensive line to stop Derek Henry?
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: Week one.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's a loaded question because week one is always like a crap shoot.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's a bunch.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: Some teams we've seen come out play really well week one and that's kind of a determining factor for how their season's going to go.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: A couple years ago, I remember when the bills lost the Steelers on an opening day and then they looked horrible and then they played really well the rest of the way.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: So what's your thoughts here?
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: Um, that is a loaded loaded question because.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: Well, okay, just to answer your question, I'm going to say no.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason why is that Brandon Bean's vision for a defensive line is not a bunch of run stuffers.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's not how he's building this team.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the way that this roster is constructed.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the way that he's drafting defensive line.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: He's drafting gap guys, speed guys, disruptor guys, which are super valuable.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: Don't keep it wrong.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: We've talked about it already.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: Last week, and you're probably going to hear me say it all season long.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: I wish that they
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: would lean into getting the prototype of a big one team, but that's just not the way that they're building their defense align.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: So can they stop Derek Henry?
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they can't.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: They've proven that through scheme and healthy linebacker play, you can slow Derek Henry downish, which is about all any NFL team can ask.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: The way that the Baltimore Ravens have their team constructed, their offensive line, the combination of Henry and Lamar, it's downright filthy.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, expecting any team to come out and straight up stop that is brutal.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: You're just trying to hang in or score fast enough on offense.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: where they have to maybe go away from the ground and pound that they want to do a little bit sooner than they feel comfortable doing.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: I honestly think that Josh Allen is the best defense for Derek Henry in this game.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: So no, they haven't addressed the defense of line in the way that is specifically going to slow down Derek Henry.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: But we've seen them be able to do it.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: We also saw Derek Henry get one yard shy of two hundred against some last year with like a ninety yarder or whatever he had in that one game early in the season.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: They got to contain them early.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that's what this comes down to.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: You cannot get punched in the mouth right out of the gate by Derek.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: And if that happens, it's going to be a long game.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: If you can get off the field early, if Josh Allen can put points on the board, then I like what we're at.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, to me, you know, I think it's going to be interesting because I feel like you couldn't have asked for a worse opponent for a week one trying to do what you did this offseason and completely revamp your defensive line.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: Not it I'm not even talking about losing Dwayne Carter for the season so I mean we'll get into that here in a minute But I feel like like you said and we talked last time we talked I talked about how the bills got I feel like they got quicker and they got the guys that just want to win their one on ones or win when their battles up front and get after the quarterback Well, that doesn't help when you have a run controlled offense like the Baltimore Ravens so I will say though though it's nice
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's the worst to have as an opening game, but it's also, I'd rather play them in week one than in week sixteen or seventeen because the bills will have time to bounce back and figure some things out.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't want this game, you know, week sixteen and they're they're fighting for the number one seed.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: I want this game on the bills are fully healthy.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: I want this game when when the bills offense is fully healthy.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: And they might not have seen any film on new Joe Brady right now.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: So their defense is going to have the same problems.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the bills is minus the dare canary issue trying to stop Josh Allen in the offense.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: So let's talk about the bills roster because Dwight Carter obviously, they have not placed him on the IR.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: We were just talking in our group chat earlier.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: They have not placed him on the IR.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: He's actually on the depth chart that the bills released today.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: No, not even to tackle with me.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so I don't know if they're waiting to bring somebody up.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: I will assume it's going to be Jordan Phillips.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: I mean heading into this game.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, maybe that's not the long term solution, but I think on six days notice or seven days notice.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think Jordan Phillips is that guy.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: This is why you brought him in.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: In case we need you, uh, your familiar with the scheme, we just need you to play this game in the rotation.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: So what's your thoughts about Dwayne Carter being out because I think we touched on him a little bit like we were concerned if he was going to even make the roster last time we talked a couple weeks ago.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: So what's your thoughts on him being on the IR and then what the bill should do to kind of fill his shoes on the, the fifty three.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think that it's got to be a fill-ups that comes up, especially because of the role that he plays, especially because of the opponent.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Regarding doing Carter, it breaks my heart for the kid, had an up and down rookie season and now he's going to miss his second season with an Achilles injury.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's a long road back.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: from that and from the, you know, adversities in the first two seasons in order to become a different maker for the team going forward.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: So I do worry a little bit about his future with Buffalo and that sucks.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, we just got to hope for the best in terms of his recovery and see if he can get right for next year and
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: make a difference.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, dude, spend your recovery eating, I guess.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: Get to get to three, get to three, get to three, twenty, and we'll be good.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I feel feel horrible for him.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think that it's got to be Philips, I guess, the call up in this spot, so that you have kind of a date Juan Jones Philips rotation in the middle, potentially as you're kind of bigger one-tech type defense attack.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that's got to be the way to go.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's, you know, I think we were all talking about Dwayne Carter as is a roster bubble guy, just because of the lack of reps that he got last year.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't play a ton, obviously being a rookie.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, like you said, it just kind of stinks for him.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: And like I think there was a lot of already added pressure on him as after what Brandon being did in the office is an end in the draft.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, okay, like you're gonna be pushed more than you were pushed last year to contribute and now this happened.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, hopefully the guy gets the guy can recover and hopefully this isn't the end for him and Buffalo, but we'll obviously we'll see what happens there.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: So, want to talk about your brawl peppers?
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: He seems to be what everyone else is.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: He seems to be the hot topic and I put out a short a couple days ago and it was basically about it was it was a clip from a show that me and a team did this past weekend where it's like it makes too much sense right and I the way I approached it was the Brandon caudrington angle.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: because Brandon Carrington does not really give you anything other than kick returns in pot returns.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: If he's good at it, fine.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: But Gibralp peppers can do pot returns and he can absolutely add help in that safety room when needed.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to say if one needed at some point this year.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: So what's what's your overall thoughts on that?
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: I obviously don't know what kind of money he's looking for.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't looked at see what he
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: If he still owed something from the Patriots, I haven't pulled that up here recently, but what's your thought under real peppers?
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a perfect fit.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: He even tweeted out that he's played for so many different defensive coordinators and head coaches.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: He won't play.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: He can play in any system.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: So what's what's your thoughts?
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think that
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, take PFF grades for what they are, but I saw that PFF posted a couple of days ago that peppers has a ninety point one PFF grade over the last two seasons fourth amongst all safeties.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: And listen, like I said, PFF grades taken with a giant grain of salt, but
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: Pepper is a starting safety.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like a good one.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like he should be not only on the bills roster, but I would prefer him starting at safety right now over Cole Bishop from what we've seen at a Cole Bishop.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: Let Bishop continue to develop.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: Get peppers in there at start and obviously that takes a little bit of ramp up time and getting him in and learning the playbook and learning the scheme and stuff like that.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: But I would feel much better with peppers back there as a starting safety on this team than I would coal Bishop right now.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: I still like Bishop long term.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: I still like his athleticism and his instincts.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: But it just feels like he's still kind of learning the play speed of the NFL.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think that his lack of reps and training camp each the last two years really set him back in terms of his potential development.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: So give him a chance to learn and put another like really talented veteran in the room to learn from, you know, this is a team captain type defense of player with a ton of versatility and experience and like you said, pot returns as well like sure whatever you need to do.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: But he, it's got to be contract like that's the only thing that I can think of right now and the only reason why I think that he's not on the team right now is because they're not lined up in terms of what the finances look like.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's also not a Carolina product and hasn't played for Brandon being he's not thirty eight years old so far.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: He's not a bull candidate.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: But he should be I think it would just be absolute upgrade signing like like a gift this late in the process you don't expect this to fall.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: And you have to think too that there's probably a ton of teams that are just like chomping at the bit to try to get him on the roster.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_01]: My thing, and you sort of touched on the PFF grade, if you look at his run defense PFF grade, isn't that what we just talked about, the run defense?
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, we got some Ravens fans in your awesome salute.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see you Sunday night.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, you can help this roster.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: Fine, safety room, boom, pot returns, boom, help in the run, boom, play in the box, boom, whatever, all that stuff.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a no-brainer, but again, I feel like there's a lot of teams vying for his services.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think a Gallagher real peppers.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: stays a free agent very long.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: Again, it's probably just financials at this point.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: And as we all know, the bills are at the very, very bottom of the NFL and salary cap right now.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: I have a question for you.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: So in the past couple weeks, the bills have made some some transactions, nothing major.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: And their salary cap has kind of fluctuated up and down a little bit.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that they're waiting to release the news that they did a restructure on anybody?
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: Because I can't foresee who they could have done in the small, or amount of cap that was freed up.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: Because to me, the biggest one is D.N.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: Dawkins.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think it frees up nine million.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_01]: north of nine million dollars.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: So you would have saw the bills go from like one or two million to like ten or eleven million.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: So what's your thoughts?
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: You think that's come in or maybe they've already done it.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: They're just waiting to let us know and it's just trying to get finalized and stuff with that.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like what's your thoughts on that?
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: The bills should day because they're going to have to sign somebody at some point up to the practice squad or they're going to have to sign players throughout the season.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: Brandon Bean wants money for the trade deadline every year.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_01]: So what's your thoughts on that?
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think it would make a lot of sense for them to have done Dion Dockens.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like he said, free up about nine mills is a good chunk of change.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what peppers is looking for, but if you went to Dion Dockens and you're like, hey, look, we want to go bring in some veteran help into the safety room.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see Dockens saying no to helping out the team.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: You have a lot of the right attitudes on the roster that have been willing to do restructures that have been willing to convert things into roster bonuses and signing bonuses and stuff like that.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like you would be willing to do the same.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: And that's just all opinion.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: I have no like.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: Intel on that or anything along those lines.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it would make sense to them to do with Carter not having gone to IR yet because we were over a holiday weekend.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: There was no roster transactions yesterday.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like there's like a backlog of moves that need to be kind of made and released now by the bills and it wouldn't be surprising if that was in there.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, okay, we've put, you know, doing Carter on season ending IR, we've restructured.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: this salary cap.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: We've moved this person from the practice squad of the fifty three.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: We've signed your real purpose to the practice squad.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like it feels like there's a backlog that gets to catch up right now.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: And it wouldn't be surprising to me if that Dawkins' restructure was a part of it.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: And if they're really heavily invested in pursuing peppers, and I don't know, man, play the revenge angle.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: Go stick it to the pads and pick off Drake Met.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like, come on, join our team and
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: interesting comment from Roy Collins here with Dawkins being thirty one is smart to restructure his contract you want to take that one or you want me to go on that one
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm fun with it because one, he's still playing at such a high level.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: And two, you really clearly have a four to five years Super Bowl window.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the way that Dean has gone about this right now.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: And listen, as long as you have Josh Allen, you always have a Super Bowl window.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: But the way that he's gone about all of the contract extensions this off season, they've all been in that four to five year range.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's picked his core.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: He's identified.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: These are the guys.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: This is the core of
- 20:09[SPEAKER_00]: what we're doing and what we're building around.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: So with Dawkins, he's thirty-one, but he still has a ton of athleticism.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: I have no concerns about him slowing down at any point, super soon.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: So it would not really concern me to see Dawkins play out that kind of four-year window, or maybe it's free with an option, or whatever it might look like in terms of the exact contract thing.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that Dawkins is very much
- 20:37[SPEAKER_00]: position to kind of, he's going to start taking a decline at some point, but he still looks like he's got a couple more seasons before there might be a slight decline in play coming from would be my initial take on.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like he's been getting better each season or entering what's this year nine.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like he's
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: being recognized more.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like you're seeing a lot more things from Dawkins that we didn't see four or five years ago.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like he's like you said he's a pillar in a cornerstone of this team.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think doing that would just submit that fact that he's going to be here until he doesn't he's not able to play anymore.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's it's not a guy where
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: If you restructure him you have to worry about it if he if he's going to be on the team in a couple years he's going to be here as long as he's able to play football at left tackle I just feel like he's a cornerstone left tackle for the bills and he's like you said I feel like last year might have been his best season yet and that was your that was your eight so what we'll see what happens I feel like a restructure would help especially if you get to a point in the season.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: Every season's different with the bills.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: Every season seems to have trials and tribulations here and there.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully not this year.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: But you just look at couple seasons ago.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't even know if the bills were going to make the playoffs when they were six and six.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_01]: So if something, God for seeing, not going to what hopefully doesn't happen like that were there at a point where they need to get some players at the trade deadline, they're going to need salary captain to do that.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see what happens with Brendan being.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_01]: For the bill's defense to be successful, who needs to step up and why?
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: And you can't just say defensive one, who needs to step up specifically and why?
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going, listen, it seems
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: obvious, but this is a map malano game.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: Like I need a big map malano showcase welcome back.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm healthy.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: I can fly downhill to stop the run.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: I can support in coverage against the tight ends.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: I can get, you know, just kind of wreak havoc and potentially create some some pressure on on Lamar even though that's not like the main thing.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: But just contain Lamar.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_00]: Like his athleticism and his ability to not let Lamar
- 23:00[SPEAKER_00]: break off a big play like in my opinion, he's the the linchpin of what the defense has to do in this game because as long as he can run fit and contain Lamar slightly like you're never going to contain Lamar fully, same thing like I said about Derek and we earlier, but
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: his athleticism, he's back if he's really flying around like it seems like he was all throughout training camp.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: He has the opportunity to make a massive impact on just trying to slow down what the Ravens are trying.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_01]: Not even a hundred percent met Milano in the divisional game was he had a couple effective plays and it's it's a different game against Baltimore when you have healthy met Milano to Albert and our intern Johnson.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: All three of those guys missed the regular season matchup.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Not saying that they're all going to stop their canary on every single run and it's going to be the bills that's going to shut them down.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: But to have your starting linebackers.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: against Derrick Henry is is just a win for the bills.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: And like you said, I really hope that Matt Milano even seventy five percent of what Matt Milano was is really, really good.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_01]: And heaven, him, healthy, heaven, terrible, Bernardo, healthy, and hopefully Terran Johnson's a hundred percent.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: I know he was a little dinged up during the preseason.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see there.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be one of those games that it's going to be very stressful.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like it's going to be one of those games in the Ravens Man.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's so much.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's too full because as much as we all as Bill's fans, we try to push the narrative that Josh is so much better than Lamar or he's just deserving of the MVP and all this stuff like the acknowledgement
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: of how good Lamar Jackson is has to be stated all the time and it's just the back and forth with Ravens fans is just that's I think that's what makes it like so much more stressful like I saw so much stuff last night come out because Josh Allen was number three in the top one hundred and Lamar Jackson was number two so
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: I just it's it's week one so I think a lot of people need to relax and not overreact if the bills do lose this game hopefully they won't and I feel pretty confident because it's week one now you can be a long term thinker and think okay
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: Everything the bills, you know, content creators and the media and this has been talking about the one seed and the bills of, you know, Sean McDermott and Brandon Bean have been pushing that narrative about we need the one seed we need the one seed and I get that this could be a game for potential seeding down the road, but I think we need to take a breath to take a breath if the bills lose this game.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_01]: especially if it's competitive in its close.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like if the bills come in, it's like week four from last year, then we might need to start saying, okay, they're gonna take some time to get things going here on the defensive side of the ball.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: But it's week one.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like Josh Allen has been played since last year.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't played since the chief's game in the AFC championship game.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: So there's probably gonna be a little rust on both sides of the ball.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: But that's the same thing that can be said for the Ravens, too.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I think
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like you said, I think just some controlled offense by the bills trying to keep their cannery and Lamar Jackson off the field is probably the best way to go.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then other than that, I just stay healthy, get out of this game with a win.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the biggest thing you can ask for.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: So any other thoughts on this game?
- 26:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think the only thing I want to touch on what you just said about Lamar Jackson because the
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: The conversation that goes back and forth between Bill's fans and Raven's fans just gets unnecessarily nasty and I hate it.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: So like, hey, Bill's Mafia, if you're listening, just keep it civil.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: You can think that Josh Allen is better than Lamar Jackson and listen, as Bill's fans, we wouldn't trade Josh Allen for anything.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: There's not a quarterback in the NFL that I would rather have under Senator than Josh Allen.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: You can also acknowledge the fact that Lamar Jackson is special and easily and just like Josh, who both came into the league with accuracy issues, both have worked their asses off to progress and grow and improve and they have.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: And they've both won MVP's and they're both on AFC powerhouses that are perennial contenders.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's a great
- 27:26[SPEAKER_00]: thing to be a part of such a thriving dynamic in the AFC right now.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a pain?
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: Do I wish that we could cakewalk through the NFC?
- 27:35[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: But it's so exciting to be in this era where you have Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen and Joe Burrow all in the AFC that are all special, special, quarterbacks in their own right.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: And you don't have to say that the other guys suck in order to compliment Josh.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: like you can acknowledge respectfully how great the others are while rooting for your guy to succeed.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: So I just want to go into week one with that kind of respect.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: And if they do beat us, hat tiptoon because they are a difficult, difficult team that have every chance of making a super more run just like the bills.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and obviously everything that you've probably seen in the social media has talked about how talented the Baltimore Ravens are roster wise.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: They're the best roster on paper and they have the best defense and this and that.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: So it's going to be fun.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_01]: Football's back.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: We have five days Sunday night football on
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: NBC.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be awesome.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that stadiums can be electric the first game of the final season at Highmark Stadium.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully they're going to, they're going to bring all the, all the bells and whistles.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get out of here, do you want to do a prediction or is it, is it too soon for that?
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: Because we're going to start doing those every week.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_00]: I will throw one out.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't given any thought at all, but I'll throw one out.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_00]: I will say,
- 29:07[SPEAKER_00]: Twenty-four, it's twenty-one bills.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's close.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's tight.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think it airs on the lower scoring side, but that they still get some touchdowns in.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm basically just giving them a fuel-goal victory because it's at home in Primetime, which Josh Allen shines at home in Primetime.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm gonna say that Buffalo gets it done by slowing down Derek Henry enough because you have your healthy linebackers and Tara and Johnson.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: and that Josh Allen.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm also, you know, I'm going to say that James Cook has two total Dutch towns.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think he gets one on the ground and one through the year.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_00]: So, twenty four twenty one, two touchdowns to James Cook, one on the ground, one through the year.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think Josh Allen breaks third-man Thomas's Russian touchdown record on Sunday?
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it's I think that's the first time that they get down if they get inside the five yard line.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think that Joe Brady's calling like three straight quarterback runs.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think this is the two touchdown rushing touchdown to maybe one, two passing touchdown games.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: This game I feel like just in my in my thoughts here, it feels like the game from a few years ago when the bills were losing it was a twenty to three and a half time.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: It was in Baltimore and then the bills had that great comeback and then they got the Tyler Bass field goal to win it.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like this might be something very similar to that where the bills are having the tough time to start the game to stop the Ravens offense.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: And then we all know the bills always make really good defensive halftime adjustments.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: And this just feels like that's one of those
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: We, like, we have a game plan.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: We, you know, Sean McDermott, Bobby Babich, have covered this stuff, like in depth for the last two months about how they're going to stop there, Kenyne.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: And then something, they just need to flip a switch on something.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_01]: And then hopefully we get a healthy Joey Boe, so which would be really nice.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully we get, you know, and saying like that stuff like that.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I feel like this is going to be a closer game, like, twenty seven, twenty four-ish.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like a Tyler Bass Fielgold does it at the end for the bills.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_01]: Or a rate of a single.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_01]: Or Ray Davis or I was going to say I was going to say we could get some massive pun in from Zach Davidson, but he didn't make the practice.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: So all right.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: John, work and they find your work, work and they find you on social media.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, they can see your Twitter handle there, but work and they find some of the stuff that you're working on.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_00]: You, you find me on socials right here at John Helmkamp talking bills and and a felt draft way too early and find me on this lovely platform and website.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_00]: I put out a couple articles last week were
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: We're already diving in on Jeff prospects.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: So follow along with that insanity.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: If you feel like just wait, when it gets to next spring, if you already want to know, twenty to thirty names, that could be targets for the bills, then start reading my stuff now.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: trust me, John's got you covered.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_01]: This guy is absolutely insane when it comes to the college, the college scouting.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: So it's, it's amazing.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's really in depth.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's awesome.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: So all right, John.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'll see you back here next week.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: And hopefully for all the bills, I'm off you watch.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: We can come back and talk about a bill's W. And then we can get ready for the jets.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: For John, I'm Dave Myers as always.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty, the Josh Allen Jesus candle.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_01]: Go bills.
