- 0:00Speaker 1: Put her down here and she's like killing all of
- 0:01Speaker 1: them because she's the best athlete on the team. And
- 0:03Speaker 1: next thing you know, she's our starting center.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh gino, we're talking at.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Her foot wasn't on the line in the Olympics, France
- 0:12Speaker 1: would have won the gold medal and the US was
- 0:15Speaker 1: in deep doo doo losing the gold medal.
- 0:17Speaker 3: She made a shot at the buzzer, but her foot
- 0:19Speaker 3: was on the line. She played for France.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We're talking about Gabby Williams.
- 0:22Speaker 4: By the way, Gabby, we're talking about players that made
- 0:24Speaker 4: massive jumps freshman a sophomore year.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, unbelieve athlete.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Probably the two best athletes to ever play here on
- 0:32Speaker 4: Maya and Gabby pure athletic.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah. Man, we've had some good ones. Yeah, we've had
- 0:39Speaker 3: some good ones.
- 0:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:40Speaker 4: So last Friday, every week lear Field through College Sports Now,
- 0:45Speaker 4: which is their podcast channel, and my son Rob does
- 0:49Speaker 4: a podcast with Megan Gower who went to Yukon for
- 0:52Speaker 4: her hoop stats.
- 0:54Speaker 2: They get very exotic with stats.
- 0:56Speaker 4: They do a podcast and like the last five or
- 0:58Speaker 4: six weeks, they've picked for various programs across the country,
- 1:03Speaker 4: a starting five and a sub well then you get
- 1:06Speaker 4: to Yukon. Well, you can't just pick a starting five
- 1:08Speaker 4: and a sub. You've got to go ten deep each side.
- 1:11Speaker 4: So they do it. They did a draft. Megan got
- 1:14Speaker 4: the first pick, Rob gets the next two, and so
- 1:16Speaker 4: on and so forth. Now there are some names that
- 1:18Speaker 4: won't be on this list. You're going to scratch. Might
- 1:20Speaker 4: scratch youright because some of them are just popular picks. Yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 4: Megan's team, Sue Swin, Stewie which was the first pick, Fie, Rebecca,
- 1:29Speaker 4: those are the starters, Carrie Bascom, clean I Musquet, Lewis,
- 1:32Speaker 4: Carol Walters, Gabby and Nika. There are some sentimental value
- 1:36Speaker 4: to some of the draft picks. Those are her ten
- 1:40Speaker 4: Rob's teams. Rob's team, now he picked second and third,
- 1:42Speaker 4: so he had De and Maya. He picked Page, Nakeisha
- 1:46Speaker 4: and Tina as his starting five.
- 1:48Speaker 3: That's a good team.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And then you've got anyway he picks it.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Now, he picks Sarah Strong because Sarah Strong, Genrizzotti, Steph
- 1:59Speaker 4: and Renee. That's a pretty good ten there. Now Sarah
- 2:04Speaker 4: Strong and Sarah Strong on that list. Now, mind you,
- 2:06Speaker 4: there's no Shay, there's no Mariah, there's no Morgan talk no,
- 2:09Speaker 4: Tamika Williams, No, As Jones, and those would be obvious
- 2:12Speaker 4: picks too. It's fun to do, but there's so many
- 2:16Speaker 4: good players that you have, and there's always going to
- 2:19Speaker 4: be an argument, why isn't this player on list?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Why isn't that player on the list.
- 2:22Speaker 4: It just proves that how ridiculously good you've been over
- 2:25Speaker 4: the last thirty years.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I know, I know it's hard, you know, because.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Everybody has their favorites, right, everybody has their favorite players,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and I.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Have my favorite players. I mean, I think we all do.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I just read a story today that, contrary to popular opinion,
- 2:47Speaker 1: when parents say, well, it's like asking me who my
- 2:50Speaker 1: favorite child is, contrary to public popular opinion, it's been
- 2:53Speaker 1: proven that parents do have their favorite child.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I've got one because I only got one.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Well, okay, all right, so this idea like, don't ask
- 3:01Speaker 1: me to pick up on my kids, because, like you know, now,
- 3:04Speaker 1: they do they have.
- 3:05Speaker 3: A favorite child. All right.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So coaches the same way. I have my favorite players.
- 3:10Speaker 1: They're not all necessarily the absolute best players, but they're
- 3:14Speaker 1: my favorite players that I've coached or that I really
- 3:18Speaker 1: really appreciated, like who they were as people, the impact
- 3:23Speaker 1: they left on me. You know, the team and everything.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So I'm sure everybody has that, and.
- 3:30Speaker 3: That's why it's hard.
- 3:32Speaker 1: On most universities, you can pick seven guys like that
- 3:35Speaker 1: over the course of their program's history.
- 3:38Speaker 3: You can't do that Yukon.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And that's if you could do that at Yukon, then
- 3:44Speaker 1: you wouldn't have twelve banners. So in order to have
- 3:47Speaker 1: twelve banners, you have to have a problem picking the
- 3:50Speaker 1: top five players in Yukon history.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah, top ten, you.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Well, top five is pretty easy.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Right, according to most people. So somebody would tell you.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Sue de Maya Stewie, I probably throw Tina as my
- 4:05Speaker 4: starting five.
- 4:06Speaker 3: That's pretty good. Yeah, that's really good.
- 4:10Speaker 2: They've done. They've done all right for them.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, that team would be hard to play against.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah, not now because they're old, but back then, yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 1: back then they would be hard to play against.
- 4:20Speaker 2: That's the thing.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Yeah, Like like somebody like when when Megan picked Rebecca,
- 4:24Speaker 4: Rob said, well, she may not be the greatest player
- 4:26Speaker 4: at Ukon, but probably the most important player.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, along with.
- 4:30Speaker 2: The keisha because they got the ball rolling.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, it's and the game. You know, the
- 4:36Speaker 1: game has changed so much. You know, it's like, uh,
- 4:41Speaker 1: is Babe Bruce still the greatest baseball player of all time? Well,
- 4:45Speaker 1: he was until the last two years. Now you know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: Otani's the best player that ever lived. Well, how can
- 4:52Speaker 1: you say that? Well, because what he's doing has never
- 4:55Speaker 1: been done before. So the guys played in the past
- 5:01Speaker 1: were generational players that did things that had never been
- 5:04Speaker 1: done before. And it lasts a long time until all
- 5:07Speaker 1: of a sudden a time arrives when you can say,
- 5:12Speaker 1: no one's ever done this. You know, if Stewie hadn't
- 5:16Speaker 1: won four in a row, if she hadn't been MVP
- 5:18Speaker 1: at a Final Four four years in a row and
- 5:20Speaker 1: only did it twice, would everybody still say, Wow, Stewie's
- 5:24Speaker 1: the greatest college basketball player of all time?
- 5:27Speaker 3: Which you can say that because of what she did.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I love Stewie, but I think even Stewe would agree.
- 5:32Speaker 4: I think Mariah should have been the MVP of in
- 5:34Speaker 4: fifteen of the Final Four.
- 5:37Speaker 3: That just you know, thinking, that's what I'm saying. Everybody's
- 5:40Speaker 3: got their favorite player, Stewey.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And you know that's the way it goes. And I
- 5:44Speaker 1: was saying this earlier today, and I hope you're listening
- 5:47Speaker 1: to Stewie because and I said to her, I said,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you are the biggest con artist in the history of
- 5:53Speaker 1: like college basketball, Olympic basketball. You know, to win a
- 5:58Speaker 1: gold medal in the Olympics, you have to win pool
- 6:01Speaker 1: play and then metal play. So first you eliminate all
- 6:06Speaker 1: the other teams and then you get down to quarters,
- 6:09Speaker 1: semis finals. Well, during all the pool play, I think
- 6:15Speaker 1: Stewie was just there for the meal, money and lunch
- 6:18Speaker 1: and dinner because she didn't do.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Live radio show.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Tuck and all those other guys did all the work.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So I hope she's listening. I hope the dumb Stewart,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I hope she's listening. And then as soon as the
- 6:30Speaker 1: metal round started, Stewie just became superwoman and they wanted
- 6:35Speaker 1: to go metal. And the most valuable player of this
- 6:38Speaker 1: year's tournament, Bretty hones Stewart.
- 6:41Speaker 4: You know what that sounds like twenty thirteen because your
- 6:43Speaker 4: freshman year. That freshman year, Stewie had her ups and downs.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Morgan was the most consistent start exactly.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And I had that conversation with Stewie as we went
- 6:52Speaker 1: into postseason. I said, Stewie, we have six weekends. This
- 7:01Speaker 1: is just like USA basketball, man. There's only six games left.
- 7:05Speaker 1: That's it, six not six months now.
- 7:08Speaker 4: She didn't even play the first game in the thirteen
- 7:09Speaker 4: tournament because she was at an ankle injury, but she final.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, only six games?
- 7:14Speaker 1: Do we just like you did a USA basketball right
- 7:18Speaker 1: and you know the rest is history.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Yeah, took care of Notre Dame in twenty thirteen. That
- 7:22Speaker 4: was kind of her coming out party. I mean, she
- 7:25Speaker 4: was good in the NCAA tournament, but that Notre Dame game. Yeah,
- 7:28Speaker 4: all right, we'll come back with Gino. We're going to
- 7:29Speaker 4: get into why we're here tonight with all these wonderful people.
- 7:33Speaker 4: We're going to talk about his organization is Charity. Twenty
- 7:37Speaker 4: five years. They've raised a ton of money for the
- 7:39Speaker 4: Connecticut Children's Hospital, Yes Medical Center. Okay, all right, back
- 7:44Speaker 4: with Gino a minute on the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches
- 7:46Speaker 4: Show on Learfield.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Stay with us,
