- 0:00Speaker 1: Moto GP finally heads down Under to the circuit that
- 0:05Speaker 1: is tougher than a kangaroo's kick, and we are so
- 0:08Speaker 1: excited for the Australian Grand Prix. But I'm your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Bernita Vanmullin and joining me is the Blowke brings the
- 0:14Speaker 1: thunder down Under to Moto GP. Matt Clayton, Matt, are
- 0:18Speaker 1: you excited that Moto GP's finally in Australia?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Is this not the best week of the year? In Nita,
- 0:24Speaker 2: We can't wait for this.
- 0:25Speaker 3: You know.
- 0:25Speaker 2: We're now, what's six days out from the main event
- 0:28Speaker 2: of Philip Island. It's always an absolute privilege to watch
- 0:31Speaker 2: the world's best riders on the world's best machinery at
- 0:34Speaker 2: one of the greatest racetracks on Earth. Massively looking forward
- 0:37Speaker 2: to it, and even better, we've got a super live
- 0:39Speaker 2: Championship on our hands as well, So it just adds
- 0:41Speaker 2: to the recipe, doesn't it.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I think this year I'm so excited and it's hard
- 0:46Speaker 1: to not talk about Mark Marquez honored you Caddy at
- 0:49Speaker 1: Philip Island, and I feel like, let's just start the
- 0:51Speaker 1: pod there because it's a circuit we know that he loves,
- 0:55Speaker 1: we know he's coming to terms and gelling so well.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Now with his GP twenty.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Three, how do you think he's going to go this weekend?
- 1:02Speaker 4: Obviously is the.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Master of mixed conditions, which is common at Philip Island.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Could we see Mark Marquees on the podium if not
- 1:09Speaker 1: win on Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Look, I mean if it was any other track, I
- 1:14Speaker 2: would probably say no, simply because we've seen the advantage
- 1:18Speaker 2: that the GP twenty four has over the GP twenty
- 1:21Speaker 2: three at this time of this time of the year.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But you cannot discount Marquees a at this track and b
- 1:28Speaker 2: on anti clockwise tracks full stop. And we've talked about
- 1:31Speaker 2: it this year that he's so good on in these
- 1:33Speaker 2: circuits that predominantly go left. And you know he won
- 1:36Speaker 2: at Aragon, which was the big drought breaking win, but
- 1:39Speaker 2: if you go back before that, I mean at the
- 1:40Speaker 2: Saxon Ring he managed to finish on the podium after
- 1:43Speaker 2: qualifying thirteenth and spacially himself around in practice and then
- 1:46Speaker 2: he actually let the race at the circuit of the
- 1:48Speaker 2: America's in round three before he fell off. And that
- 1:50Speaker 2: was so early at his time at Ducati that you
- 1:52Speaker 2: could probably give him a pass there. But his record
- 1:55Speaker 2: on anti clockwise tracks, I think means that he has
- 1:58Speaker 2: to be considered a chance of a win this weekend,
- 2:01Speaker 2: simply because the two guys that are leading the championship
- 2:03Speaker 2: in Banyai and Martine in that reverse order, obviously one
- 2:07Speaker 2: and two in the championship, neither of them have ever
- 2:09Speaker 2: won at Philip Island, And I think you put that
- 2:12Speaker 2: Marquees record at Philip Island, his record on anti clockwise
- 2:16Speaker 2: tracks and the fact that neither of those two front
- 2:18Speaker 2: runners in the championship have ever won in any category
- 2:21Speaker 2: at this racetrack. If there's a race that Marquees can
- 2:24Speaker 2: win before the end of the year, I think it's
- 2:26Speaker 2: this one. But Renida, I dove into the stats of
- 2:30Speaker 2: Mark on anti clockwise tracks last week for a piece
- 2:32Speaker 2: for Fox Sports, because I just thought, we know what
- 2:36Speaker 2: the itess tell us, but what does what does a
- 2:38Speaker 2: number tell us? It's crazy. Marquez has won thirty three
- 2:44Speaker 2: percent of all these Premier class starts, twenty three percent
- 2:47Speaker 2: on all clockwise tracks, fifty nine percent on all the
- 2:51Speaker 2: anti clockwise tracks. So talking circuit of the America's Saxon Ring, Aragon,
- 2:56Speaker 2: Philip Island, and Valencia they're the five on the calendar
- 2:58Speaker 2: that predominantly go left. He's I wouldn't say he's unbeatable,
- 3:01Speaker 2: but he's close to And so you add that into
- 3:04Speaker 2: this championship fight and the fact that these other guys
- 3:06Speaker 2: don't have a great record at this track. I think
- 3:07Speaker 2: he I wouldn't say he's the favorite, but I would
- 3:09Speaker 2: not be shocked in the slightest if he won a
- 3:11Speaker 2: third Grand Prix this Sunday.
- 3:13Speaker 1: God, could you imagine that, like does the comeback and
- 3:16Speaker 1: especially here at Philip ioland, like you said, the best
- 3:19Speaker 1: week of the year, on the best tracks in the calendar,
- 3:21Speaker 1: that would be amazing. But we know this season it's
- 3:24Speaker 1: been such a du Caddy dominance, so it's hard to
- 3:26Speaker 1: not count that Peco and Jorge are going to be there,
- 3:29Speaker 1: and maybe even Bascianini because of how the Philip Bland
- 3:33Speaker 1: Soca is with the surface and how much it does
- 3:36Speaker 1: chew tire is thinking back last year when Jge Martin
- 3:38Speaker 1: made that tire blunder right and he went from was
- 3:41Speaker 1: he leading the Grand Prix and then just fell down
- 3:43Speaker 1: the field.
- 3:44Speaker 2: He was leading the race with eight quarters to go
- 3:47Speaker 2: and finished fifth, didn't even finish all the podium. So yeah,
- 3:50Speaker 2: it was one of those crazy races where he took
- 3:52Speaker 2: a tire gamble and looked like an absolute genius for
- 3:54Speaker 2: about ninety eight point five percent of the race. But
- 3:57Speaker 2: you mentioned Bascianini there. I mean, yeah, that higher shredding
- 4:00Speaker 2: factor of Philip Island is definitely something that plays into
- 4:03Speaker 2: his favor because we know how good years late in races.
- 4:06Speaker 3: But the weird thing.
- 4:07Speaker 2: For me with the Banyai and Martin thing I said
- 4:09Speaker 2: before that neither of them has won there. It's not
- 4:12Speaker 2: like either of them are slow, and it's not you know,
- 4:14Speaker 2: I'm saying that I'm not writing them off because they're
- 4:16Speaker 2: no good there. It's interesting Banyaya sort of came to
- 4:20Speaker 2: the four as a force in Motor GP, predominantly through
- 4:23Speaker 2: those couple of years that we didn't have races here
- 4:25Speaker 2: because of COVID.
- 4:25Speaker 3: But you look at his.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Last three Grand Prix and if you believe in fate
- 4:29Speaker 2: and you believe in numbers, I think you should know
- 4:30Speaker 2: he should put your money here. He was fourth in
- 4:32Speaker 2: twenty nineteen, he was third in twenty twenty two, he
- 4:35Speaker 2: was second in twenty twenty three. So it's a bit
- 4:37Speaker 2: of a pattern. There if you're looking for something in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the numerology. But the thing for me with Martine is
- 4:42Speaker 2: that for the past two visits we've had here with
- 4:45Speaker 2: Motor GP, he's clearly been the fastest guy, Like he's
- 4:47Speaker 2: absolutely slaughtered the circuit record two years in a row
- 4:50Speaker 2: in qualifying but hasn't even finished off the podium both years.
- 4:53Speaker 2: So one year was that fairly chaotic twenty twenty two
- 4:56Speaker 2: race which Alex Rinns won for Suzuki, and he was
- 4:59Speaker 2: back in about seven by the end, but that felt
- 5:02Speaker 2: like a win that he squandered last year because he's
- 5:05Speaker 2: clearly the fastest guy. He led for the majority of
- 5:07Speaker 2: the race, but took a bit of a tire gamble
- 5:10Speaker 2: that in retrospect was so nearly the right thing to do.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So I'm not saying that neither of these guys are
- 5:17Speaker 2: slow at Philip Island, but until you've done it, if
- 5:19Speaker 2: you know what I mean, like, you need to prove
- 5:20Speaker 2: it to me before I'm going to back you to
- 5:22Speaker 2: actually win something, because you know, yeah, the speed's there,
- 5:25Speaker 2: but it's all about what happens at the end of
- 5:26Speaker 2: twenty seven laps, not at the end of one.
- 5:28Speaker 1: So we know, do Cadi is they're going to be
- 5:30Speaker 1: dominant this weekend. That's been the theme currently for the
- 5:33Speaker 1: whole season. But let's touch on the katms. Pedro or
- 5:37Speaker 1: Costa seems like he's on a strong run at the moment. Yes,
- 5:40Speaker 1: he's making some rookie mistakes, which we do expect from him,
- 5:44Speaker 1: but it's his first time Philip Island automotive GP bike.
- 5:46Speaker 4: How do you think he's going to go?
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting like they come straight from Motigi last
- 5:51Speaker 2: time out, which I don't think you could fight as
- 5:53Speaker 2: that's more different in terms of characteristics than Philip Island
- 5:56Speaker 2: because Mategi's all long straights into hairpins, big breaking zones.
- 6:00Speaker 2: That KTM is very very good at breaking a straight line.
- 6:02Speaker 2: That's one of its really strong characteristics, you could say, so,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I don't think it'd be from a lack of trying,
- 6:09Speaker 2: but I would be surprised if KTM are as strong
- 6:13Speaker 2: relative to the Ducades as they were at Motigi. Now
- 6:16Speaker 2: what that does to a Costa who's obviously never ridden
- 6:18Speaker 2: a motor GP bike at Philip Island, and particularly Brad Binder,
- 6:22Speaker 2: Binda's awesome at Philip Island. He's been really good all
- 6:25Speaker 2: the way through Motto three Moto two, so I would
- 6:27Speaker 2: expect him to go well there because he likes to track,
- 6:30Speaker 2: but I'm not sure that track really fits into the
- 6:33Speaker 2: characteristics of the strongest parts of the KTM. And of
- 6:36Speaker 2: course we're going to go to Maverick Vidale's quarter here Roniti,
- 6:39Speaker 2: because you know I love to visit this every single
- 6:41Speaker 2: week we have this podcast. This is a track that
- 6:43Speaker 2: should suit a Prillier if you're looking for another manufacturer
- 6:47Speaker 2: to come in and maybe spoil the party for Ducati
- 6:51Speaker 2: and Vignalis has been very good at Philip Island, and
- 6:53Speaker 2: he's also been very anonymous, which is kind of a
- 6:56Speaker 2: snapshot of Maverick's motor GP career, isn't it, because he
- 6:58Speaker 2: could either be very very good or sometimes you go,
- 7:01Speaker 2: oh yeah, Maverick Vinalez was in the Grand Prix because
- 7:03Speaker 2: I didn't actually notice him for the last forty five minutes.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So if I was expecting one of those two bikes
- 7:08Speaker 2: to maybe show a little bit better at Philip Island,
- 7:10Speaker 2: I don't think a cost is going to be lacking
- 7:13Speaker 2: effort because he never does. But I think the Aprilliant
- 7:16Speaker 2: might have more of a chance to emerge from that
- 7:18Speaker 2: mid pack to challenge back into the podium, perhaps top five,
- 7:23Speaker 2: but if it's going to be any of them, it
- 7:25Speaker 2: will be Maverick. And with Maverick it's like you can
- 7:27Speaker 2: just shrug your shoulders and say, on his day he
- 7:29Speaker 2: could be on the podium, and when it's not his day,
- 7:31Speaker 2: he might be tenth.
- 7:32Speaker 3: But who would know?
- 7:34Speaker 1: Now you did skip past our Aussie Jack Miller, and
- 7:36Speaker 1: I feel like we need to talk about him Home
- 7:38Speaker 1: Grand Prix last time on the last year, so on
- 7:41Speaker 1: the KTM at this circuit, but we know he's coming
- 7:43Speaker 1: back next year on the Yamaha Prahmaha love to save
- 7:46Speaker 1: your playing home there's shot. Sorry, Jack Miller, we know,
- 7:51Speaker 1: so excuse me. We know he's got a corner named
- 7:54Speaker 1: after him here Home Grand Prix.
- 7:57Speaker 4: There's that added pressure.
- 7:58Speaker 1: When we spoke to him last week, he said to
- 8:00Speaker 1: his friends and family, this could be my last time here.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Do you think for an Aussie writer coming home Philip
- 8:06Speaker 1: Island that pressure to perform can hinder his impact here.
- 8:12Speaker 2: It's funny, isn't it, Like Home grownd Prixs do different
- 8:14Speaker 2: things to different people. There's some guys who just get
- 8:16Speaker 2: waghed down with all of the extra promotional all stuff
- 8:19Speaker 2: and the TV stuff and the fact that you know,
- 8:21Speaker 2: there is a lot of expectation and it's all coming
- 8:23Speaker 2: from a good place from the crowd because they want
- 8:26Speaker 2: to see you do well, because there's the Aussie flags
- 8:28Speaker 2: and the Miller signage and we see it every year.
- 8:31Speaker 2: It's funny with Jack, like pressure is a burden for some.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I think Jack actually really revels on the support and
- 8:37Speaker 2: we quite often see him go better at this racetrack
- 8:41Speaker 2: relative to where he is and the rest of the season,
- 8:43Speaker 2: because I think he takes it as a real privilege
- 8:46Speaker 2: and just as a boost of energy. And it does
- 8:48Speaker 2: different things to different people. It benefits him, I think.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And you know, we've seen him make some unbelievable starts
- 8:54Speaker 2: at this race track the last few years, and it's
- 8:56Speaker 2: not because he's got more local home knowledge than some
- 8:59Speaker 2: of these guys, because you know, Philip Island is one
- 9:01Speaker 2: of those tracks that nobody really has a huge experience
- 9:04Speaker 2: advantage over anybody else because it's used so infrequently and
- 9:07Speaker 2: it's so far from Europe. But Jack's a guy who
- 9:10Speaker 2: lifts at home, so he's coming in off a reasonably
- 9:14Speaker 2: good MOTEGI I thought he's particularly strong early in the
- 9:18Speaker 2: Grand Prix in Japan, and it wouldn't surprise me at
- 9:21Speaker 2: all if he has a better weekend perhaps than we
- 9:23Speaker 2: are expecting at Philip Island, because I think the home
- 9:26Speaker 2: support and the crowd and having a corner named after you,
- 9:30Speaker 2: like you said, all of that that goes on. He
- 9:32Speaker 2: loves racing here, and he's a lot more relaxed. He's
- 9:35Speaker 2: got a lot of family around, and he spreads himself
- 9:37Speaker 2: pretty thin because he's trying to be all things to
- 9:39Speaker 2: all people. But I think this is one of those
- 9:41Speaker 2: race tracks where he gets a massive boost. So look,
- 9:43Speaker 2: we know it's not been a great season, but I
- 9:46Speaker 2: think he will be more prominent than perhaps we're thinking
- 9:48Speaker 2: this weekend, simply because he loves racing at home and
- 9:51Speaker 2: at this track.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Now we've got to touch on the Japanese manufacturers, Yamaha
- 9:56Speaker 1: first than Honda.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Fabio Kodorro seems like he was on a strong run.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Obviously, you mentioned earlier in the pod Mategi startstop circuit
- 10:04Speaker 1: that just just does not suit the Yamahas at all.
- 10:08Speaker 1: But Philip Land in the past, Fabria has done really
- 10:11Speaker 1: well here. Do you think that consistency that he's had
- 10:13Speaker 1: in this second half of the season, he can continue.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I reckon they'll be pretty police to see the
- 10:18Speaker 2: back of Motigi that was pretty miserable for him and
- 10:20Speaker 2: Alex Rins and obviously Remy Gardner was there as a
- 10:22Speaker 2: wildcard and they were pretty much propping up the back
- 10:25Speaker 2: end of the time sheets and Quatra ran out of
- 10:28Speaker 2: fuel again for the second the second time in three races,
- 10:31Speaker 2: so they'll want to make sure there's a bit more
- 10:32Speaker 2: in the in the Yamaha on Sunday. But I think
- 10:35Speaker 2: this track will suit that bike more perhaps than Motigui did,
- 10:39Speaker 2: And we saw a couple of rounds ago he was
- 10:41Speaker 2: strong in Indonesia, strong at Messano, so I think they'll
- 10:45Speaker 2: be more prominent than they perhaps were at Motigi. But
- 10:48Speaker 2: you're still thinking on a really good day, it's Fabio
- 10:52Speaker 2: in Q two, maybe on the third row or something
- 10:54Speaker 2: like that, you can see him. You know, he will
- 10:57Speaker 2: outperform the limitations of that bike. I think we've seen
- 11:00Speaker 2: that over the course of the year. It just depends
- 11:03Speaker 2: on what that bike's ceiling is at this track. So
- 11:06Speaker 2: you know, could you see something like a top seven
- 11:09Speaker 2: eight finish for Fabia on a really good day. Yeah,
- 11:11Speaker 2: of course, a lot of it depends on the decade situation,
- 11:14Speaker 2: but I think he is the guy who will lift
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yamaha if anyone does. Alex Rins. We know that his
- 11:21Speaker 2: previous race winner here and incredibly incredibly impressive back in
- 11:24Speaker 2: twenty twenty two, but we know that he's physically pretty
- 11:27Speaker 2: compromised at the moment, and you know, the season's kind
- 11:30Speaker 2: of tailing off for him and he's just got that
- 11:31Speaker 2: one top ten for the season. So I would be
- 11:33Speaker 2: surprised if it's him that steps forward from Yamaha, but
- 11:36Speaker 2: it wouldn't surprise me if quashareros in Q two and
- 11:39Speaker 2: maybe punching above his weight, you could say.
- 11:41Speaker 3: On that bike.
- 11:42Speaker 1: One thing I love about Philip Parland is the weather
- 11:45Speaker 1: because it is so unpredictable that you don't know what's
- 11:48Speaker 1: going to happen. And last year we had all that
- 11:50Speaker 1: crazy rain and everything like that. But we don't want
- 11:53Speaker 1: to know about last.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Year, right, it was crazy, they canceled the race.
- 11:57Speaker 3: It was it was crazy, but we.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Know it can rain quite often.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Then I think what is awesome about that is it
- 12:03Speaker 1: does bring the field back together. So if it happens
- 12:06Speaker 1: on a Saturday when we have qualifying, we might have
- 12:08Speaker 1: an unknown front three rows.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Again, you know, yeah, absolutely, And look, I mean Philip
- 12:13Speaker 2: Island weather forecast, you can take them with a pinch
- 12:15Speaker 2: of salt, because it could change three times before we
- 12:17Speaker 2: finish this podcast around there, but there is going to
- 12:20Speaker 2: be some rain around because it's Philip Island and there's
- 12:22Speaker 2: going to be some rain around. I hate to rub
- 12:24Speaker 2: it in, but Saturday and Sunday in Melbourne at least
- 12:27Speaker 2: last weekend was beautifully sunny and absolutely fantastic, so we
- 12:30Speaker 2: probably should have had a grad Prix.
- 12:31Speaker 4: But it's going to rain the next weekend.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Well that's almost to give and you have to pack
- 12:35Speaker 2: your entire wardrobe when you go down there because you'll
- 12:38Speaker 2: probably be wearing some of it at least at some point.
- 12:40Speaker 2: But yeah, you're right. I mean, if there's some rain
- 12:42Speaker 2: early in the weekend, the last forecast I looked at,
- 12:44Speaker 2: it looks like Sunday is going to be decent, but Friday,
- 12:47Speaker 2: Saturday could be a little sketchy. So a little rain on,
- 12:50Speaker 2: a little rain on Saturday morning for qualifying could certainly
- 12:53Speaker 2: make things interesting for the rest of the weekend. But
- 12:55Speaker 2: I was going to talk about that, because I don't
- 12:57Speaker 2: know about you, but one thing I'm super looking forward
- 12:59Speaker 2: to this weekend, and it's a weird thing to say.
- 13:02Speaker 2: We take Motor GP sprints for granted so much now
- 13:05Speaker 2: because they've been at every round since the beginning of
- 13:07Speaker 2: twenty twenty three, so we've had thirty six sprints. We're
- 13:09Speaker 2: pretty familiar with the format. Of course, we've never had
- 13:12Speaker 2: one in Australia because last year's sprint got pusponed to
- 13:15Speaker 2: Sunday and then eventually canceled because of the weather and
- 13:17Speaker 2: the Grand Prix was held on Saturday, so we've got
- 13:20Speaker 2: this thing that's now, you know, sort of old news
- 13:22Speaker 2: as far as Moto GP goes in terms of having
- 13:23Speaker 2: a sprint, We've never had one here. So that's going
- 13:26Speaker 2: to be a nice little curve ball for the weekend,
- 13:27Speaker 2: isn't it.
- 13:28Speaker 4: That's going to be very exciting to see.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Just thinking back to last year, we were both there obviously,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and we're going to be on the ground this weekend,
- 13:34Speaker 1: so guys, we're going to try and bring you as
- 13:36Speaker 1: much behind the scenes as we can on the Fox
- 13:38Speaker 1: Sports socials and on the website. But thinking back to
- 13:42Speaker 1: last year, I have to talk about Joel Kelso, because
- 13:45Speaker 1: he got on the podium in Moto III, and obviously
- 13:50Speaker 1: we know he's been so strong this year, constantly in
- 13:54Speaker 1: that top ten, qualifying on the front row a few times.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Do you think that Joel could possibly get back on
- 13:59Speaker 1: that podium this say.
- 14:01Speaker 2: I reckon Joel's clothes are still drying out from last
- 14:03Speaker 2: year because given how wet that Moto three race was
- 14:06Speaker 2: when he finished on the podium there, so look twelve
- 14:08Speaker 2: months on, it's it's the place of his only Motor
- 14:11Speaker 2: three podium today and what a place to do it.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It was an absolutely amazing ride. He's actually had a
- 14:16Speaker 2: really good year, but hasn't had that one headline result
- 14:20Speaker 2: for me. And like you said, he's constantly up in
- 14:22Speaker 2: that top group in qualifying, we see him constantly attached
- 14:26Speaker 2: to the front group and these races, but perhaps a
- 14:29Speaker 2: function of the machinery that he's on, he's always sort
- 14:31Speaker 2: of tethered to the back of the group, so he's
- 14:32Speaker 2: never cast a drift. But the number of races he's
- 14:35Speaker 2: had this year where he's been two seconds off a podium,
- 14:37Speaker 2: you know, less than a second off a podium in
- 14:39Speaker 2: a couple of races, So He is a bit like Jack,
- 14:43Speaker 2: I think, in that he really revels in having a
- 14:45Speaker 2: home race. He embraces all of it. And you know, yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 2: you don't get a lot of sleep, and there's every
- 14:50Speaker 2: relative under the sun hitting you up for tickets and
- 14:52Speaker 2: all that sort of stuff. But I actually think he
- 14:54Speaker 2: really enjoys it. And you know, you forget, these Ausies
- 14:57Speaker 2: are so far from home most of the time, so
- 15:00Speaker 2: the chance for everyone to come to their backyard for once,
- 15:03Speaker 2: it must be super cool for these guys because they
- 15:05Speaker 2: get to they get to host, you know, and it's
- 15:08Speaker 2: also one of the world's great racetracks, so you have
- 15:09Speaker 2: all these guys telling them what an amazing racetrack it is.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And I think he just gets a lift. And he
- 15:14Speaker 2: said to me last year, he said, you're riding around
- 15:17Speaker 2: on a lap after a session, you see a Kelso flag,
- 15:20Speaker 2: you see someone wearing you merch and it's one of
- 15:22Speaker 2: those like, man, I've come so far to get here,
- 15:24Speaker 2: how cool is this? And he said, you just want
- 15:26Speaker 2: to make these people happy, and you want to make
- 15:28Speaker 2: them proud to sort of fly the Aussie flag at
- 15:30Speaker 2: their home Grand Prix. So I have no doubt that
- 15:33Speaker 2: he'll be absolutely pushing for the front and it wouldn't
- 15:36Speaker 2: take much. Like he's been super close a couple of
- 15:38Speaker 2: times this year. And imagine if your first two Motor
- 15:41Speaker 2: three podiums in the World Championship, we're both at home.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I think he'd be lobbying for more races at Philippilo.
- 15:45Speaker 3: That'd be good.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Imagine if we could have two or three Australian Grand
- 15:48Speaker 1: Prix that would be brilliant sign it.
- 15:51Speaker 4: We'd love that. Now.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I'm fresh from the bat Thos one thousand with the supercars,
- 15:56Speaker 1: but our Moto three rookie Jacob Rulstone, was on the
- 15:59Speaker 1: ground on the weekends.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I was speaking about Ossie's at the home race.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I was talking to him and he is so excited
- 16:04Speaker 1: for his first Grand Prix. He wouldn't tell me too much,
- 16:07Speaker 1: but he said that he's collaborating with someone. So I'm
- 16:10Speaker 1: guessing an Australian writer for a special one off helmet.
- 16:14Speaker 1: So let's talk about Jacob. I know, I'm very excited
- 16:17Speaker 1: to see. Let's touch on Jacob because it seems like
- 16:19Speaker 1: after the summer break he's not had the best run.
- 16:22Speaker 1: But when I was there, I was talking to him.
- 16:24Speaker 1: He goes after Mantegi. I've had this week off, he said,
- 16:28Speaker 1: he's feeling his confidence coming back. How do you think
- 16:31Speaker 1: he's going to go with his first home Grand Prix?
- 16:34Speaker 2: Well, what's funny, it's the first time he's actually been
- 16:36Speaker 2: to the Australian Grand Prix. He's never been there is
- 16:38Speaker 2: a spectator which is hilarious. So you know, I might
- 16:41Speaker 2: have to ask him on the weekend what you're already
- 16:42Speaker 2: coming to, Philip Pilot, if you could be on the
- 16:44Speaker 2: other side of the fence. It's not the side of
- 16:45Speaker 2: the fence that you and I have to sit on.
- 16:46Speaker 2: But of all the riders, all the Aussies that we've got,
- 16:51Speaker 2: he's the guy that needed that week off more than
- 16:53Speaker 2: anybody else because you know, you have a bit of
- 16:55Speaker 2: a bar resolved, and then instead of getting a chance
- 16:58Speaker 2: to all right, deep breath, reset away, take stock, it's
- 17:01Speaker 2: like I'm on a plane and then two days later, oh,
- 17:03Speaker 2: free practice has started again. And you know the snowball
- 17:06Speaker 2: of this type of the season because you've got six
- 17:08Speaker 2: races in seven race weekends. Momentums are hard thing to shift.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So if you've got good positive momentum, great, just keep
- 17:14Speaker 2: riding the wave. When you've had a bit of a
- 17:17Speaker 2: crappy result somewhere and you try to dig yourself out
- 17:20Speaker 2: of that. Being away from home, you don't get to
- 17:22Speaker 2: go back to the you know, go back to a
- 17:24Speaker 2: team facility or just your European base, and you're living
- 17:27Speaker 2: in a hotel.
- 17:27Speaker 3: All that sort of stuff. It throws you off.
- 17:29Speaker 2: And I reckon that three weekends in a row. He
- 17:32Speaker 2: needed a weekend off, the fact that he could spend
- 17:33Speaker 2: it in Australia and talking to you, going to Bathurst.
- 17:36Speaker 3: All this sort of thing.
- 17:37Speaker 2: I think that's probably pretty helpful to, you know, get
- 17:39Speaker 2: a bit of a reset and relax himself. But I
- 17:42Speaker 2: dare say half of wooll of Gong will be at
- 17:44Speaker 2: Philip Isilo this weekend because I think he's going to
- 17:46Speaker 2: be another guy who's going to have a lot of
- 17:47Speaker 2: people there supporting him.
- 17:49Speaker 3: And you know he was.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I think he's sort of blissfully ignorant as to how
- 17:55Speaker 2: big this is going to be, because I think he's
- 17:56Speaker 2: always a bit a bit inquiring, like, oh, you know, I'm
- 17:58Speaker 2: supposed it'll be pretty good, and it's like wait until
- 18:00Speaker 2: you get down there mate, and you see the amount
- 18:02Speaker 2: of flags and people cheering you on down there. It'd
- 18:04Speaker 2: be fantastic for him, And at a time where you
- 18:08Speaker 2: know he's taken a couple of rockets from her poncereal
- 18:11Speaker 2: over the last few weeks. I think Jacob needs an
- 18:13Speaker 2: arm randy shoulder at the moment, just to make you
- 18:15Speaker 2: feel a bit happier with life. He's a young kid
- 18:17Speaker 2: who's had a bit of a struggle with the last
- 18:19Speaker 2: few rounds. So having a track full of Australians cheering
- 18:22Speaker 2: your name and cheering you on, that's got to be
- 18:24Speaker 2: pretty good medicine, isn't it.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Oh definitely, you think that it'd help. And when I
- 18:28Speaker 1: did talk to him, he is so excited. You could
- 18:30Speaker 1: just see the grin from ear to ear and his
- 18:32Speaker 1: eyes laid.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Up and you can just tell that this means the
- 18:35Speaker 4: world to him.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But also Sena Aegeus' is his the first Australian Grand
- 18:39Speaker 1: Prix as well, and he hasn't ridden here for so
- 18:42Speaker 1: long because he's another one who took off to Europe.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Now we know Senna's also had.
- 18:46Speaker 1: A little bit of a rough patch, but he seems
- 18:48Speaker 1: to be like ebbing and flowing a bit more of
- 18:50Speaker 1: a roller coaster is his.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Season this year.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I reckon there's a bit of an asterisk with
- 18:55Speaker 2: a couple of his last he's last two results had
- 18:58Speaker 2: the accent on the first lap at Indonnee, so we
- 19:00Speaker 2: never really got a chance to see what was going
- 19:01Speaker 2: to happen there. And then the Moto two race at
- 19:04Speaker 2: Motigi because it was started and they did half a
- 19:06Speaker 2: lap and it was red flag that it was a
- 19:07Speaker 2: bit of a tire lottery. You can just you know,
- 19:09Speaker 2: shrug your shoulders and write that one down to Some
- 19:12Speaker 2: people played it right and some people didn't, and he
- 19:14Speaker 2: was in the majority of the people that didn't play
- 19:16Speaker 2: it right with that tire choice there. But yeah, look,
- 19:19Speaker 2: another first for an Australian this weekend at Philipilo. It's
- 19:22Speaker 2: a bit of a recurring theme for this podcast. But
- 19:25Speaker 2: you know, you forget how young center still is, the
- 19:26Speaker 2: fact that he's in Moto two, but you know, him
- 19:28Speaker 2: and Jacob Rolston have basically mirrored each other and spent
- 19:31Speaker 2: a lot of time in Europe together. They're entirely different categories.
- 19:33Speaker 2: So you know, another guy who has been fishing around
- 19:37Speaker 2: in Q two for a fair part of this year,
- 19:40Speaker 2: and I think that'll be almost like a bare minimum
- 19:42Speaker 2: goal for hit him this weekend, it's like, get into
- 19:44Speaker 2: Q two, see what you can do, because we know
- 19:46Speaker 2: with Moto two that you know, if you can qualify
- 19:48Speaker 2: in those first three to four rows. He's looked really
- 19:51Speaker 2: accomplished when he's been up with those front running guys.
- 19:54Speaker 2: But sometimes if you're starting, you know, twentieth twenty second,
- 19:57Speaker 2: you're back in the jungle there. The first lap of
- 20:00Speaker 2: photo too, you almost want to hide by on the
- 20:01Speaker 2: couch because it's pretty feral back there. Because the machinery
- 20:04Speaker 2: is so similar and so competitive, there's always some really
- 20:07Speaker 2: good guys out of position in that category. So you know,
- 20:11Speaker 2: step number one for him, get a decent qualifying, have
- 20:14Speaker 2: a good Saturday afternoon, and then Sunday, look, let's see.
- 20:17Speaker 2: But again another person who'll have a fair few family
- 20:21Speaker 2: and friends coming down from Sydney that will be there.
- 20:24Speaker 2: So yeah, it'd be nice for these four Ossie guys.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I mean Jack's used to it, of course, but it'd
- 20:28Speaker 2: be nice for these four Ossie guys to have heaps
- 20:30Speaker 2: of local support because this is such a special weekend
- 20:32Speaker 2: for everybody.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I was just thinking when you were talking then going,
- 20:37Speaker 1: we've had so many great Australian writers over the years,
- 20:40Speaker 1: Mick Dolan, Wayne Gardner, Casey Stoner, obviously Chris. We've had
- 20:45Speaker 1: so many World champions and just these big names who
- 20:48Speaker 1: have made such an impact in motorcycle racing. And then
- 20:51Speaker 1: we have Jacob and Joel and Sanna who are making
- 20:53Speaker 1: their way through and it's their first Grand Prix or
- 20:55Speaker 1: obviously for the two and not for Joel but he's
- 20:58Speaker 1: trying to get.
- 20:59Speaker 4: To the podium there and Jack as well. What an
- 21:02Speaker 4: incredible experience for these.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Guys well, and also to like you get to write
- 21:06Speaker 2: on a track where you're riding down Gardener straight into
- 21:09Speaker 2: dow and Corner into Stone accorder into Miller Corner. You've
- 21:13Speaker 2: got all these names that these younger guys have seen
- 21:15Speaker 2: over the years on the TV and they've read about them,
- 21:18Speaker 2: and you know, it's thirty years since Mick Dowan's first
- 21:21Speaker 2: World championship. This year we're going to be celebrating that
- 21:23Speaker 2: at Philip Island over the course of the weekend. This
- 21:25Speaker 2: is like a piece of history. These younger guys are
- 21:27Speaker 2: now living and that's the cool part about it. You know,
- 21:29Speaker 2: they get to sort of tread on the in the
- 21:31Speaker 2: footsteps of their predecessors. They know the legacy and the history,
- 21:34Speaker 2: they know the reverence this track's held within. So the
- 21:37Speaker 2: fact they get to participate like you. If that doesn't
- 21:39Speaker 2: get you out of bed a little bit faster the boarding,
- 21:41Speaker 2: then you're probably at the wrong business, I think.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I think for those who are listening at home and
- 21:45Speaker 1: want to tune in to watch Amotor GP race, you've
- 21:48Speaker 1: got to watch the Australian Grand Prix because just the history,
- 21:52Speaker 1: the vibrancy and for Aussi's there, it doesn't.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Get much better than that.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Fantastic.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But I was going to say to our listeners, if
- 21:59Speaker 1: you're wondering why we didn't mention Honda earlier, that's because
- 22:04Speaker 1: you caught up with Joan Zako recently, Matt, so tell
- 22:07Speaker 1: us how was your chat with Zarco.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Look, it's always great to catch up with John because
- 22:12Speaker 2: he's such a thoughtful interview. He's never just going to
- 22:15Speaker 2: go through the motions. He always gives massive thought to
- 22:17Speaker 2: what he says. And there's just a point of difference
- 22:19Speaker 2: with him because he's been around, he seen and lifted all.
- 22:22Speaker 3: He's had such.
- 22:23Speaker 2: A bizarre Moto GP career in so many respects. But
- 22:27Speaker 2: you know the fact that last year's Australian Grand Prix
- 22:29Speaker 2: was so strange. It was held on a Saturday and
- 22:31Speaker 2: they had no time to prepare. If there was ever
- 22:34Speaker 2: going to be a race that snapped this winning drought
- 22:37Speaker 2: that he'd had after all these years in MotoGP for
- 22:40Speaker 2: something is suitably radom as Philippolo was last year. It
- 22:42Speaker 2: was almost in the stars that he was going to
- 22:44Speaker 2: win that race, and the fact that he didn't even
- 22:46Speaker 2: lead it for one lap. He managed to take the
- 22:48Speaker 2: lead on the last lap and then scurry away. It
- 22:51Speaker 2: took him one hundred and twenty races and finishing second
- 22:55Speaker 2: eleven times before he finally got on the top step
- 22:57Speaker 2: of the podium. So it's a fantastic story of perseverance.
- 23:00Speaker 2: But get into that interview now, Anita. But what I
- 23:03Speaker 2: did ask him at the beginning was, Honda has been
- 23:06Speaker 2: on a bit of an up search lately, and you
- 23:07Speaker 2: know they're coming from a really, really low base, but
- 23:10Speaker 2: there's been some signs of life for them lately. It
- 23:12Speaker 2: had a particularly good weekend at Indonesia. I spoke to
- 23:15Speaker 2: him at Motegue and I asked him about how Honda's
- 23:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty four has taken shape, and then of course
- 23:19Speaker 2: we got into Phillip Island after that to I wanted
- 23:25Speaker 2: to talk to you before you came to Australia because
- 23:27Speaker 2: I'm sure you'll be having many conversations about Australia, but
- 23:32Speaker 2: I wanted to start off by asking you a little
- 23:35Speaker 2: bit about the last few rounds because it seems that,
- 23:39Speaker 2: you know, slowly been a little bit more competitive, The
- 23:42Speaker 2: bike seems to be working a little better, and you
- 23:45Speaker 2: seem to be having some better results. Do you think
- 23:46Speaker 2: this is a better part of your season now?
- 23:50Speaker 5: Sure, it's a better part of the season because we've
- 23:54Speaker 5: got some progress in this one and the rezards were
- 24:02Speaker 5: better on the last race in Indonesia, so that was
- 24:06Speaker 5: so nice toy to have the top ten. And I
- 24:09Speaker 5: would say from the summer I tried to get some
- 24:14Speaker 5: improvements al so on the ridings tie. I tried to
- 24:19Speaker 5: think about improving the riding since the beginning of the year.
- 24:24Speaker 5: But it seems I've been able to do it better
- 24:29Speaker 5: after the summer and now that we have also things
- 24:34Speaker 5: on the bick working better than an opportunity came in
- 24:38Speaker 5: Indonesia and was happy to to take it.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Where do you think that the bike is improving from
- 24:46Speaker 2: the start of the season, and then where do you
- 24:48Speaker 2: think the biggest area is that needs to go Because
- 24:51Speaker 2: you can obviously you can start to see the back
- 24:54Speaker 2: of the midfield now and get into the points in
- 24:57Speaker 2: the last.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Couple of rounds.
- 24:59Speaker 2: What do you think is the bigest thing that needs
- 25:00Speaker 2: to change to make that next step.
- 25:04Speaker 6: We did a step in the fast corner, and we
- 25:07Speaker 6: get much better turning in the fast corner thanks to
- 25:11Speaker 6: the new fairing, So we finally did a step on
- 25:15Speaker 6: the aerodynamic side, but we have a.
- 25:20Speaker 5: Lack of acceleration.
- 25:22Speaker 6: We cannot have a strong acceleration because the bike is
- 25:27Speaker 6: doing too much reading and.
- 25:28Speaker 5: That's the weak pont out of the bike.
- 25:31Speaker 6: But this I still don't know how they're going to
- 25:35Speaker 6: fix it.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Well, it's it's good that things are moving in the
- 25:39Speaker 2: correct direction for you. But as I mentioned at the start,
- 25:42Speaker 2: the main thing I wanted to ask you about is
- 25:46Speaker 2: obviously a race coming up in a couple of weeks
- 25:49Speaker 2: time where you know you'll be arriving at Philip Island
- 25:52Speaker 2: for the first time in Motor GP as the defending.
- 25:55Speaker 3: You know, race winner.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Take us back there to October last year, but because
- 26:00Speaker 2: I mean we obviously we all know that you waited
- 26:02Speaker 2: for so long and there were so many podiums and
- 26:05Speaker 2: then you win a race. It was so strange because
- 26:09Speaker 2: it was Saturday, you know, not even a Sunday Grand Prix.
- 26:12Speaker 2: And I think you took the lead. There was maybe
- 26:15Speaker 2: like eight corners left on the last lap, and then
- 26:17Speaker 2: you win the race. And after the race you almost
- 26:21Speaker 2: seemed like you were happy, but you were sort of relieved,
- 26:24Speaker 2: and I think you looked a bit, you know, like stunned,
- 26:27Speaker 2: like what actually happened? Like take us back to that race,
- 26:30Speaker 2: because it was a crazy race, wasn't it.
- 26:34Speaker 6: I was for sure one of the best memory I
- 26:38Speaker 6: think we live clearly because because everyone was askinny, I'm
- 26:44Speaker 6: going to be the first victory, and when heard that
- 26:46Speaker 6: on the time, you get tired of it, and and yes,
- 26:54Speaker 6: I almost I could not like a scream of joy
- 26:58Speaker 6: explode because it was us well weight down and like
- 27:04Speaker 6: wait that is away from the shooder and that was
- 27:08Speaker 6: that was cool. And but the good thing was I
- 27:14Speaker 6: think because it was on Saturday or so, it helped
- 27:16Speaker 6: me to to have less time to think, so go
- 27:20Speaker 6: straight to the target.
- 27:22Speaker 3: So what you said we need more Saturday races. That's
- 27:25Speaker 3: what That's what it sounds like.
- 27:26Speaker 2: But where that was such a strange race because we
- 27:29Speaker 2: know that Jory had used that soft retire and he
- 27:32Speaker 2: made the really big gap. But I'm wondering for you,
- 27:35Speaker 2: like when did you think it was possible to win?
- 27:37Speaker 2: Because he started coming back towards you guys with maybe
- 27:40Speaker 2: like three or four laps to go, and you're probably thinking, okay,
- 27:43Speaker 2: you know there could be a chance here.
- 27:46Speaker 6: When I saw him going away, then I was thinking
- 27:49Speaker 6: focus to say, okay, do the best to finish the
- 27:52Speaker 6: comments and uh yeah, I don't remember exactly flaps to
- 27:58Speaker 6: the end, but when I saw was there, okay, it
- 28:02Speaker 6: should something should happen in the last lap. And so
- 28:07Speaker 6: try to be in circomposition before the last lap because
- 28:10Speaker 6: it will be the time that you were you can
- 28:12Speaker 6: overtake jog.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Did you rewatch the race afterwards to try and understand
- 28:19Speaker 2: what had happened because you said before like it happened
- 28:21Speaker 2: so fast and then you win the race and it's
- 28:23Speaker 2: only Saturday and there's a lot to process, Like did
- 28:27Speaker 2: you need to go back afterwards and understand the race
- 28:29Speaker 2: and to actually maybe enjoy it a little bit.
- 28:31Speaker 6: More, no, because I knew I remember all the race, well,
- 28:39Speaker 6: what's happened on the bike and then when you watch
- 28:42Speaker 6: it again, yes, you see that it was kind of
- 28:47Speaker 6: big fight at the beginning of the racer from the start,
- 28:50Speaker 6: then a few of the texts with Mark that was
- 28:55Speaker 6: kind of intense. But once I got this space of
- 29:00Speaker 6: this over text, it was a control try to control
- 29:03Speaker 6: the race as most as possible because we knew that
- 29:06Speaker 6: the retire will re drop, and so I've been controlling
- 29:11Speaker 6: then some lap two, O, lap three until lap twenty
- 29:17Speaker 6: five because I think twenty seven laps. Yeah in Philippagnan, yes,
- 29:22Speaker 6: and she lap twenty five was just controlling.
- 29:27Speaker 2: One of the things I thought was really cool was
- 29:30Speaker 2: on the slowdown lap, a lot of your rivals and
- 29:34Speaker 2: the guys that you've raced against for years, like they
- 29:36Speaker 2: made They were super happy for you, and you know,
- 29:39Speaker 2: obviously you'd waited for so long. Everyone knows your story,
- 29:42Speaker 2: and I thought the interactions you had with some of
- 29:45Speaker 2: the other rivals coming back in on the slowdown lap
- 29:47Speaker 2: was super nice. Like for you, was that like a
- 29:51Speaker 2: It's obviously a respect thing, but I think for you
- 29:53Speaker 2: that must have been really nice for you to know
- 29:55Speaker 2: that they were happy for you.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Yeah, that was very nice. Surprised how many riders were
- 30:05Speaker 6: happy for me, So I took it. It's a very
- 30:10Speaker 6: positive enactually to take, and that was nice. They were
- 30:17Speaker 6: They all knew that I'm I'm a fast rider and
- 30:25Speaker 6: I could have win maybe other races, but things they
- 30:29Speaker 6: were not enough matching and I was doing mistakes, so
- 30:32Speaker 6: they were Yeah, they were happ Yeah I did it.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it was it was nice to say that.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Were you a little bit worried about the back flip
- 30:39Speaker 2: because it had been been a few years since you've
- 30:41Speaker 2: done a backflip and you're thinking, oh, now I've won
- 30:44Speaker 2: this race, I have to do this backflip and everyone's
- 30:46Speaker 2: going to be watching.
- 30:47Speaker 3: So there's a bit of pressure on the back flip, right.
- 30:50Speaker 6: A little bit, yes, but then the most difficulties down.
- 30:54Speaker 6: So you said, at least you just do it and
- 30:57Speaker 6: you will see how how we'll land my feet or not.
- 31:01Speaker 6: But at least there's the jump.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, you got the landing right. Hey, Before I let
- 31:08Speaker 2: you go, because it would be remissive me not to
- 31:10Speaker 2: ask you. This one of the big stories that's happened
- 31:12Speaker 2: with Moto GP In the last week or two, is
- 31:15Speaker 2: that your former Motor two boss Aki Io is coming
- 31:18Speaker 2: into MotoGP with KTM And it kind of feels like
- 31:21Speaker 2: Aki's been talked about coming in for so long and
- 31:24Speaker 2: now finally it's going to be happening. You obviously had
- 31:28Speaker 2: some great success with Aki, So what are the you know,
- 31:31Speaker 2: what qualities does he bring to a Moto GP team,
- 31:34Speaker 2: because it seems to me that he's been a guy
- 31:36Speaker 2: who's been ready to do this for a long time.
- 31:40Speaker 2: What do you see him bringing to to MotoGP as
- 31:42Speaker 2: a team manager.
- 31:45Speaker 5: I think it's very linked to.
- 31:48Speaker 6: The race. Is more into the racing mood, the race
- 31:55Speaker 6: mood than like maybe the business side if any you know,
- 32:00Speaker 6: he's controlling also everything well. But next year I think
- 32:05Speaker 6: with Acosta coming to the factory team, he will disturble
- 32:11Speaker 6: a little bit, maybe the the balance that was like
- 32:17Speaker 6: Brad and Jack, they are so good balance and it
- 32:20Speaker 6: can disturble bit that and I think a Ki will
- 32:23Speaker 6: be able to to keep him in the right way
- 32:26Speaker 6: and I think they can become very strong. But then
- 32:29Speaker 6: he knows very well Brad, so it will help brotherso
- 32:33Speaker 6: I think to think also in the right way and
- 32:39Speaker 6: I think he will be able to make the two
- 32:41Speaker 6: ideas very strong and very focused, like not fighting between them,
- 32:45Speaker 6: but I think against the others, against the others.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Well, Johanna, I don't have anything else for you for now,
- 32:52Speaker 2: but I hope that when you get here in two weeks,
- 32:55Speaker 2: when you drive into Phillip Island for the first time,
- 32:58Speaker 2: that you just, you know, look around and think and
- 33:02Speaker 2: smile and remember the good days because it's always going
- 33:05Speaker 2: to be a special place for you. And yeah, there
- 33:07Speaker 2: must be nothing like coming back to a track where
- 33:09Speaker 2: you've won, you know, and had that massive success last year.
- 33:12Speaker 2: So thank you for the time this afternoon, and we'll
- 33:16Speaker 2: we'll see you in a couple of weeks.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I wouldn't.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Be a thanks Jean, appreciate it. Thank you. Welcome.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Wait wait waite, Okay, Matt, awesome interview, But I have
- 33:28Speaker 1: a one question for you. Are we going to see
- 33:30Speaker 1: another Zarko backflip at Philip Island this year?
- 33:33Speaker 3: That was so funny in the interview.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I said to him, like, well, you're a little bit worried,
- 33:37Speaker 2: but it had been basically I think it was seven
- 33:40Speaker 2: years or something since you'd tried the backflip and the
- 33:42Speaker 2: way that he should have shrugged and said, well, I
- 33:44Speaker 2: did the hard bit. I won the race, so I
- 33:46Speaker 2: figured I'd better see if I can do the backflip.
- 33:48Speaker 2: But if the backflip goes wrong, then so be it.
- 33:50Speaker 2: But I think I'd worked it out. It was like
- 33:51Speaker 2: two thy five hundred days since he'd done a backflip,
- 33:54Speaker 2: so he's like, oh boy, I hope I can still
- 33:55Speaker 2: do this. But the course thing of the interview for me,
- 33:58Speaker 2: and I remember noticing this at the time, how happy
- 34:02Speaker 2: his peers were for him. And you could really see
- 34:05Speaker 2: that on the slowdown lap back to the pits, like
- 34:07Speaker 2: every single rider, even somethod he's probably had some beef
- 34:10Speaker 2: with over the years, stopped alongside him and gave him
- 34:13Speaker 2: a pad on the back or a thumbs up, and
- 34:15Speaker 2: everyone was pumped up for him because they knew the
- 34:19Speaker 2: weight of this history. It's like, it's one hundred and
- 34:21Speaker 2: twenty starts. You haven't won a Grand Prix, you'd been
- 34:23Speaker 2: on the podium nineteen times, you'd never been on the
- 34:26Speaker 2: top step. So that was kind of cool because you know,
- 34:28Speaker 2: at the end of the day, these guys are rivals.
- 34:30Speaker 2: But I think everyone respects what everyone else is doing
- 34:32Speaker 2: here because they know the risks and involved in the
- 34:35Speaker 2: talent that it requires. So it was nice to see
- 34:37Speaker 2: everyone happy for him. And I'm sure you know he's
- 34:40Speaker 2: an emotional guy, Johann So I'm sure when he drives
- 34:43Speaker 2: into Philip Island for the first time on Thursday, he'll
- 34:45Speaker 2: look around and go, yeah, this is a pretty cool
- 34:47Speaker 2: feeling because he's never come back to a race track
- 34:49Speaker 2: as a Motor GP defending winner before.
- 34:51Speaker 3: This is the first time.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I was standing on the infield going up to the Hayeshez.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I was opposite where he did the backflip in front
- 34:58Speaker 1: of all of the fans.
- 35:00Speaker 4: The crowd was roaring.
- 35:02Speaker 1: It was one of the most incredible things I've seen.
- 35:05Speaker 1: And you see people win races. You know, we've seen
- 35:07Speaker 1: Pecko's in jo Hey, we've seen Mark do it. But
- 35:10Speaker 1: you could just see, like you said, the writers were there,
- 35:12Speaker 1: but the crowd were getting behind him. And that's one
- 35:15Speaker 1: thing I love about Ozzie's who support Moto GP and
- 35:18Speaker 1: our sport, is they are so happy for the winner.
- 35:21Speaker 4: They're so happy to.
- 35:22Speaker 1: See the guys out there racing, but also just congratulate them.
- 35:25Speaker 4: For the work that they've done well.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Happy and knowledgeable is the thing I always come back
- 35:30Speaker 2: to because I think it's a crowd down there of
- 35:31Speaker 2: people that really know what they're watching. So no one
- 35:35Speaker 2: had to explain to them that this was a great
- 35:37Speaker 2: story and a story of perseverance. And finally this guy
- 35:40Speaker 2: getting the monkey off his back. Everyone knew that, and
- 35:43Speaker 2: I think they celebrated accordingly. And so for him to
- 35:46Speaker 2: win at that racetrack and know that a knowledgeable crowd
- 35:49Speaker 2: understood the gravity of that, I thought that was super cool.
- 35:52Speaker 2: It's just a perfect way to wrap up a very
- 35:54Speaker 2: very strange weekend at Phillip Island.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Last year, it was a very strange weekend and fingers
- 35:58Speaker 1: crossed it is good whether I don't know about you, Matt,
- 36:00Speaker 1: but I have heard this.
- 36:03Speaker 4: I'm trying to think of the word.
- 36:05Speaker 1: But if you hold your breath over the bridge as
- 36:07Speaker 1: you get onto the island, it can help with good luck.
- 36:10Speaker 4: For good weather.
- 36:11Speaker 3: So okay, I'll remember that.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Yes, everybody who's listening, if you can just hold your
- 36:15Speaker 1: breath as you drive over the bridge, that's gonna help
- 36:17Speaker 1: us have good weather this weekend at Philip Island. So
- 36:20Speaker 1: fingers crossed, but we're going to be joining you fresh
- 36:23Speaker 1: from the Australian Grand Prix and of course over the
- 36:25Speaker 1: entire weekend.
