- 0:04Speaker 1: And we're back to the Craigway Show.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Have a message for Craig, share it by using the
- 0:09talkback feature on the Ihearts Radio app here. On Thursday afternoon,
- 0:19Game number three of the American League Championship Series is underway,
- 0:23Yankees batting in the top half of the first with
- 0:28two down and to a board, and Cleveland trying to
- 0:34get through that first thing. Remember, the Yankees are up
- 0:36two games to none, so when today they would have
- 0:39a stranglehold on the series and pretty much put it
- 0:42out of reach, all but put it out of reach,
- 0:45and they would have four chances to close it out
- 0:48too in Cleveland and two in New York if that happened.
- 0:51The Dodger trying to get a commanding edge on the
- 0:54Mets and the National League Championship Series. It's just a
- 0:57two to one series league for LA. They'll play this
- 1:00evening in New York with the Mets trying to get
- 1:02even at two games apiece before Game five tomorrow, and
- 1:05then if the Mets win tonight or tomorrow, it would
- 1:08send the series back to Los Angeles for a sixth
- 1:12game on Friday, and then if it turns out that
- 1:17they need a or the six game, excuse me, would
- 1:21be on Sunday. The game five, it would be tomorrow Friday.
- 1:26A sixth game would be Sunday. In a seventh game
- 1:28that necessary would be Monday. Jass Chisholm strikes out to
- 1:31end the top of heirs, so it is scoreless. Going
- 1:34to the bottle off. Somebody on the text line when
- 1:36we mentioned Tony Bennett retiring, So Tony Bennet retired, who's next,
- 1:39Frank Sinatra?
- 1:43Speaker 1: Not that Tony Bennett.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Neither that Tony Bennett nor Frank Sinatra are with us
- 1:47any longer. It's the Tony Bennett of the basketball coaching variety,
- 1:54all right, speaking to the coaches, trying to hear some
- 1:56more from long Orne at football coach Steve Sarkishan. As
- 2:00has been chronicled, it was not a real fast start
- 2:04for the long Worns last Saturday in the win against Oklahoma,
- 2:07scoreless first quarter, first time they've been scoreless this year,
- 2:09first time they trailed in a game this season. They
- 2:12were down three to nothing after a turnover and two
- 2:15punts in the first quarter before they really kicked it
- 2:17into the high gear. But sark was asked after examining
- 2:23that slow start against Oklahoma. How can his team get
- 2:27off to a fast start this Saturday against Georgia.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I'd say, first of all, looking back on it now,
- 2:34I'm glad that that happened. You know, I think that
- 2:37that was good for us offensively to have to have
- 2:39some of that adversity early on in the game. I
- 2:42learned a lot about the maturity of the offensive football
- 2:45team and the leadership on of that group. And so
- 2:48with all that being said, I would sure love for
- 2:51that not to happen again.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I wouldn't want.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Three, you know, three you know, three three play drives
- 2:56and thirteen yards in a quarter. So the goal is
- 3:00to put together some good openers. The goal is to
- 3:04make sure that our players understand the openers and know
- 3:06the adjustments to those things. The goal is to put
- 3:10our guys in really good positions on third down and
- 3:12to feel comfortable with the stuff to extend drives and
- 3:15then ultimately, you know, call your best stuff in the
- 3:18red area that that gives you a chance to get
- 3:19in the end zone. So but I think all that
- 3:21goes back to confidence and belief in what we're doing.
- 3:24And you know, like I said, I've got a ton
- 3:25of belief in our staff and the game plan they
- 3:27put together. I've got a ton of belief in our players,
- 3:30and these guys have earned it, and, like I said,
- 3:33looking forward to to them going out and competing and
- 3:35playing at a high level Saturday night.
- 3:37Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:39Speaker 2: The next came and I mentioned this earlier about Michael
- 3:43Kern having the injured ankle, the punter, he's still held
- 3:45on placements. But Ian Ratliffe started and punted for Texas,
- 3:51and Sark was asked about his evaluation of Ratliffe as
- 3:54well as the status of Kerrent.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I thought he did a heck of a job first
- 3:57time out. You know, we didn't protect very good on
- 4:00his first punt, but I thought he did a heck
- 4:02of a job after that. I thought Michael looked really
- 4:05good today. I thought both he and Ian both punted
- 4:07the ball well today. So we're fortunate that Ian actually
- 4:10got some experience and feel good about, you know, kind
- 4:14of where where Michael's at as well.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Okay, so if Current can't go, the Ratliff would be
- 4:19ready to go. We here here's.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Another one of those terms, like like somebody had call
- 4:25a text in on the text line and asked about
- 4:29good on good and that's a football phraseology. Another one
- 4:33is call sheet. The call sheet is what the coaches
- 4:38use when they're calling out an offense or a defense
- 4:40in sending, you know, putting in a play, especially on
- 4:44the offensive side of the call sheet. And sometimes the
- 4:47first ten to fifteen plays might be scripted out, and
- 4:49other times fewer than that, and sometimes not at all.
- 4:53But Sark was asked about his process of building a
- 4:57call sheet for a game.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I love putting a call sheet to together.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I think, you know, it's a it's a blank canvas
- 5:03for us. And we start on Sunday and we start
- 5:05going as a staff pass game run game run, game, pass,
- 5:10game screens, specials, and we do the bulk of our
- 5:14We do the bulk of our base game planning on
- 5:16Monday and Tuesday, and that thing starts filling up, and
- 5:19then we start working ourselves into third down and red
- 5:22area and backed up in two minutes, and then we
- 5:25start talking about musk calls through as practice goes, and
- 5:28the stuff we really like, and then we start formulating
- 5:30our openers. And then I get a chance to visit
- 5:33with the quarterbacks, you know, Friday night, and then depending
- 5:36on when kickoff is that sometimes I like to stay
- 5:39up Saturday nights kind of Friday night's kind of late
- 5:42working on it. There's other days I'll kind of pause
- 5:46in the middle of it and get up early in
- 5:47the morning and have a cup of coffee and just
- 5:49start formulating my thoughts and I just keep trying to
- 5:53play the game forward and what would it look like
- 5:56if this situation or that situation, and ensuring certain plays
- 6:00getting enough touches so that they can find their rhythm.
- 6:02So all that's just kind of the I guess, the
- 6:07playing the chess match before you actually sit down at
- 6:11the table. But that's that's the fun part for me,
- 6:14Like I love that aspect.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Of it all.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Now, this is obviously quite the environment this week here
- 6:21in Austin. You have this game number one against number
- 6:24five in the country. There's the F one race going on.
- 6:28You have ESPN's College Game Day here on Saturday morning.
- 6:32ESPN itself will send it two crews to anchor Sports
- 6:35Center throughout the weekend here in Austin, beginning tomorrow with
- 6:42I believe it's Kevin and Gandhi and El Duncan who
- 6:45are going to be anchoring on campus, and then there'll
- 6:48be a crew out at CODA, including I think Nicole
- 6:52Brisko will be out there one of the anchors for
- 6:54Sports Center over the weekend.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So there's a lot going into this.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Sark was asked by our colleague Roger Wallace about the
- 7:03impact that a crowd can have and he cited UH
- 7:06Tennessee breaking a record for sound and noise against Georgia
- 7:13last year, and he and Roger asked that of Sark
- 7:17about how big a factor would a crowd be that
- 7:20could be that noisy this time around.
- 7:22Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I didn't know that stat Tennessee against Georgia broke the record. Okay,
- 7:28you know, I think I think for us it's a
- 7:30it's a huge component. You know. I think in my
- 7:33time here through four years, d k R has has
- 7:36created an environment that has become intimidating, that has become loud.
- 7:41Our students do a fantastic job, but I think in
- 7:44this game especially.
- 7:45Speaker 1: We need more than our students.
- 7:47Speaker 3: We need everybody, uh in this ballgame, it should be
- 7:50a rocket environment. We need to make it as difficult
- 7:53as we can on Georgia. And I think our fans
- 7:57can do that. I know, I've I've heard it really
- 8:00loud before, and most notably I remember heart hearing it
- 8:03really loud against Alabama in twenty twenty two. I heard
- 8:06it really loud at the end of that Kansas State
- 8:08game last year. My goal is that it's that loud
- 8:11for four quarters Saturday night, and then my goal is
- 8:14when I sit in my press conference after the game,
- 8:16you tell me Roger that we broke that record that
- 8:18Tennessee said against Georgia last year.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, be a nice That'd be a nice goal to
- 8:23try to set to try to see if he could
- 8:25do something off that.
- 8:26Speaker 1: A couple more things from Sark.
- 8:28Speaker 2: One is for the second time this season, he'll have
- 8:33a player going up against his former school. Remember when
- 8:36Texas played UTSA and there was alt of the conversation
- 8:38about Trey Moore, who transferred it from UTSA. Same story here,
- 8:43but slightly different wrinkle to it. Bill Norton, the long
- 8:46worn senior defensive tackle transfer him from Arizona, actually began his.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Career at Georgia.
- 8:53Speaker 2: In fact, Kirbie Spartan had really complimentary things to say
- 8:55about Bill Norton in his news conference earlier this week,
- 8:59how he had really emerged as a special teams player
- 9:01and was in the rotation along the defensive front. He
- 9:04transferred to Arizona and then of course came along with
- 9:06Johnny Nansien to Texas.
- 9:08Speaker 1: So Sark was asked.
- 9:09Speaker 2: About, Uh, did he have any kind of conversation with
- 9:13Bill Norton by going up against his old team like
- 9:15he did with Tray Moore before they played UTSA.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Bill's a little bit a little bit
- 9:22more of a unique situation and the fact that you know,
- 9:24when he left Georgia, Uh, he went to Arizona and
- 9:27then left Arizona has come here, which I think now
- 9:30is becoming more of the norm, right guys kind of
- 9:32going to a couple of different schools. I know, he's
- 9:35got a ton of respect for that program. You know,
- 9:38they recruited him. They had obviously a great defensive lineman
- 9:41when he was there, and and he's done a really
- 9:43nice job for us. You know, he's a big man inside.
- 9:46I think he's really grown into our style of play
- 9:49and it's been you know, I think that's why our
- 9:51run defenses has really started to step itself up, just
- 9:55because of that middle can get difficult to run on,
- 9:58and that allows guys like an name Leonga and David Benda, Uh,
- 10:02kind of to fly around because he's taken up multiple blockers.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Okay, and then one more from Sark and this is
- 10:12about getting his team ready to play a Georgia team
- 10:16that played Alabama in that epic game a couple of
- 10:18weeks ago, and he was asked what were his thoughts
- 10:22about Georgia his takeaway about Georgia from their loss to Alabama.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it was a little bit of an
- 10:30anomaly early on. It was kind of an avalanche early
- 10:33in the game. You know, there was a lot of
- 10:35a lot of turnovers, a lot of third and long
- 10:38type situations. Georgia was in that that forced, you know,
- 10:41had him behind the sticks into Alabama's credit. They kind
- 10:44of jumped on them, you know, and they were using
- 10:46milrose legs and so on and so forth. The one
- 10:48thing I gathered I took from the game is, you know,
- 10:50Georgia's got the heart of a champion, and the way
- 10:52they fought back in that second half, the way they competed.
- 10:56I was super impressed, and I was impressed watching it live.
- 11:00I got a chance to watch the second half of
- 11:02that game. I was impressed watching the tape now and
- 11:05I don't know if it was necessarily straight adjustments. I mean,
- 11:08they obviously had to just start kind of throwing the
- 11:10ball to get back into the game. But more importantly,
- 11:13I just felt like it was the heart of a
- 11:15champion that showed up, and that's something for us to
- 11:19hold on to going into Saturday night. Regardless of how
- 11:22this game goes, it's going to be a four quarter game.
- 11:25Speaker 1: All right.
- 11:25Speaker 2: So there it is the thoughts from Long Wornon's head
- 11:28coach Steve Sarkeshan.
- 11:30Speaker 1: From today's media Zoom Now.
- 11:32Speaker 2: A reminder will bring you Long Worn Weekly with Coach
- 11:36Star tonight at seven o'clock. That's the program we recorded
- 11:39last night and we will We always recorded on Wednesday.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Nights at Pluckers, and.
- 11:48Speaker 2: We recorded at Pluckers and then on Wednesday nights from
- 11:52six to seven and then it airs from seven o'clock
- 11:56to eight o'clock on Thursday night. So it'll be on
- 11:58tonight at seven o'clock. Yankees and Guardians are still scoreless.
- 12:03Each team stranded two runners in the first inning. Yankees
- 12:06had runners at first and second, Guardians had runners at
- 12:09second and third, and both teams stranded two runners in
- 12:12the first inning. So they're one in the books. In
- 12:15Game three in the ALCS, Yankees lead that series two
- 12:18games tone, no score going to the top of the
- 12:20second there at Progressive Field. Up next, we'll hear from
- 12:24long worn men's basketball coach Rodney Terry.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Will continue on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone
