- [warm] This is NewsCard Daily for Friday July 10, 2026 ... the biggest stories from Australia and around the world in just minutes. — — [serious] We begin in Canberra where the federal government’s new financial year changes are now hitting hip pockets across the country. From today, the minimum wage rises to around $26 an hour... lifting pay for more than 2 million workers. Superannuation must now be paid at the same time as wages... tightening cash flow for businesses but aiming to stop unpaid super rorts. Paid parental leave expands to 26 weeks... giving new parents more time at home with their baby. And a series of tax tweaks begins... including small immediate cuts for many taxpayers and a new instant deduction for work-related expenses. For households... it’s a mix of modest relief and ongoing cost‑of‑living pressure... as rents, groceries and fuel remain high. — — [serious] In Sydney... foreign policy and security are in sharp focus after new tension in the Pacific. Australia and the Solomon Islands pledge to deepen ties... and publicly criticise China’s recent ballistic missile test from a nuclear-powered submarine in the Pacific. The test... fired into international waters... alarms defence experts who warn it sharpens strategic rivalry in our region. For Australia... this is about keeping sea lanes secure and deterring coercion close to home. For Pacific neighbours... it raises fears of being caught in the middle of great‑power competition. Expect stronger security cooperation... and more debate over how Australia balances its China relationship with regional stability. — — [serious] In Western Australia... disturbing allegations continue to reverberate through diplomatic circles. The Australian Federal Police confirms it is investigating claims that Israeli forces raped and tortured four Australian female activists detained in May while trying to deliver aid to Gaza. The women were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla... seized in international waters. Israel’s embassy strongly denies the accusations... calling them false. Canberra is under pressure to defend citizens abroad while managing a sensitive relationship with Israel. For Australians... this case cuts to core questions about human rights... accountability in conflict zones... and how far our government will go to protect activists working in dangerous settings. — — [curious] Now to our region... where Australia is stepping up its Pacific partnership with Vanuatu. The two countries sign what’s called the Nakamal Agreement in Canberra... a wide‑ranging deal on security, economic development, climate resilience and infrastructure protection. Australia remains Vanuatu’s primary policing and security partner... a move aimed at countering growing strategic competition in the Pacific. For Australians... this shapes our backyard — from disaster response and cyber security to who builds and controls key ports and cables. It also signals that Canberra is prepared to invest more to keep Pacific nations close... amid concern about other powers expanding their footprint. — — [serious] In Melbourne... attention turns to sport and soft power. The Opals... Australia’s women’s basketball team... host China in a high‑profile two-game series at John Cain Arena. It’s a rare chance for local fans to see two global heavyweights on home soil... and a key warm‑up for the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany later this year. Beyond the scoreboard... it’s another example of Australia using sport to engage with major partners... even as political and security tensions with China simmer in the background. For many families... it’s simply great basketball. For policymakers... it’s also diplomacy in sneakers. — — [urgent] Meanwhile overseas in the United States... Middle East tensions are back on a knife‑edge. Washington scrambles after a breakdown in the fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran-linked forces... following weeks of clashes tied to the wider Iran war that has driven up global fuel prices. Any further escalation risks fresh shocks to oil markets... which Australians feel at the bowser despite a temporary cut in fuel excise earlier this year. It also complicates U.S. diplomacy and allied efforts to contain the conflict. For Australia... the stakes are real — higher fuel costs... shipping risks... and potential pressure to contribute more to regional security operations. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
